Solve : CPU starts normal, but screen blank. Can faintly see mouse move.?

Answer»

I turn on comp. and lights and fan all seem to be working correctly, but there is no picture.  If I look real hard I can see my desktop, but just barely.  COULD the screen itself be out?  If so..... I bought a new Laptop but still have all my FAMILY pictures on the old Laptop, what to do.  Can I somehow connect old comp to new comp with USB or something and how would I pull this off since I cannot see screen of old computer.  I understand very little about CPU so KINDERGARTEN explanations would be helpful.  New computer is HP with Vista and old one is Compaq with XP.  Old comp does not have output for s cable, I thought I could hook it up to my TV, but no.   Thanks, KCRemove hard drive from old computer, buy hard drive enclosure (~$20), and hook it up to your new computer.so this old computer is a laptop?? go to a friends house and with the laptop off, plug an external monitor in and then use your laptop there to wirelessly transfer photos/usb drive/crossover cable

if it is a desktop (your old one) then it definitely sounds like the monitor...I had one like this a year and a bit ago and just replaced it and havn't looked BACK since...of course the explanation for the laptop screen being so black is the back light broke and isn't lighting up the screen.

Easiest mothod it to go to a friends house with both, plug their monitor in (assuming it is VGA not many laptops have direct DVI output yet)

Solve : I borrowed this drive and need to know about power connections?

Answer»

I've borrowed an external drive--it's a Hitachi 160 usb drive that has a dc power connection on it. The drive came without a power cord, so I'm wondering what to use. on the outside of the drive it says: 5v 600mA, so I'm assuming that I'd need an adaptor with those settings, but am I correct in assuming so?The 5 volts is not negotiable, but the 600 mA current rating means that a 5 volt power supply with a rating of 750 or 1000 mA would be OK. You need to make sure that the polarity is correct as well, and that the power supply is OK for use with an external hard drive. Why don't you go back to the person who loaned it to you and ask for the power supply?

Thanks. I think he would've given that to me if he COULD've. It's a guy I hardly know and he works for a large medical facility as head of security--I'm thinking he had the extra hard drives, but not extra power hookups.

Solve : CD not playing what I put on it?

Answer»

I saved a DVD video to my computer.  This was a DVD illustrating a woodworking machine.  I burned a cd from the file saved on my computer.  I opened & played it in Windows MEDIA on my computer.  It played fine; just like the original DVD.

Now for the problem, I tried to PLAY it on a DIFFERENT office computer.  When I opened it in Media, a video of *censored* beaches somewhere in the world started playing!!!!

I then tried to play another CD in that same computer and SURE enough it opened with the *censored* beaches.

What is causing this?  Why does it play the beaches on one computer and not another one?

Thanks in advance.sounds like the other computer is infected. Since it's an office computer- I assume you have an IT technician. Inform them of the problem. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 01, 2008, 01:01:58 PM

agree...or just enjoy the *censored* beach photo's while you have them....LOL

just kidding...Thanks!  I downloaded a TOOL from www.ccleaner.com on the computer.  After it cleaned the computer up, I put the cd's back in that computer and the beach video was gone!!!

Dang! You should have made some copies of those *censored* beaches, and distribute them here.......just kidding...LOLYes, for - documentation purposes.

Solve : No BIOS! Fans go on, but no Boot.?

Answer»

Greetings,

I just got a computer from a friend for a very reasonable price. The problem was that one day his computer just stopped working. It shut off and it wouldn't start back up. I had a similar problem with my old computer (I chucked it out the WINDOW - it DECIDED to crap the bed at a really bad time). But I kept everything that was usable.

Everything is thought to work. I've got all my good parts with all of his good parts and I just don't know whats up. I think it might be something wrong with his power supply, cpu or the ram or the mobo *HOPE NOT*.

What happens is this, When I hit the power, the fans light up and start spinning.
-Fan on Power Supply Works
-Fans on Cases Work
-Fan on VIDEO Card Works
-Fan on the CPU Works

Basicaly what happens is the fans turn, but nothing comes up. The Monitor doesn't show BIOS or a boot screen or nothing. Just stays like it didn't have anything connected to it. It doesn't even sound like my hard drive is BOOTING UP. ALSO, the DVD RW & the CD RW don't have power to them.

So far, what I think might be the problem is the CMOS Battery could be old (I've Removed it & Jumped the CMOS but STILL no BIOS).  So tomorrow I'm going to go get a new battery.

Also, I hear that the heat gel or w/e is on the processor and connects the the heat sinc may be old & not working properly, causing the processor to shut down immediately. so I've taken off the processor and cleand the old heat goop off with a little alcohol and tomorrow I'm going to pick some up at the hardware store or Radio Shack w/e is more convenient and replace it.

But, for some reason my gut tells me its neither of these things. I just feel like I'm doomed.

Can anyone out there help me?

Off the top of my head this is what I know for specs.

  • 3 Sticks, 3200 Ram OCZ 1G Each GOLD EDITION
    1 nVidia 512MB PCI 16X Graphics Card
    Intergrated Sound

    DVD-RW
    CD-RW
    AMD - Duo Core Processors (2g x 2)
    300GB SATA hard drive.

Please, Any help will be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to have a computer at my house again.

Thanks for reading,
Cerebral AilmentTry it with only the following hooked up:

CPU and heatsink/fan.
1 stick of RAM
monitor
Keyboard and Mouse
Vid card
( If this board has onboard video use that instead of a vid card )

You can then add components ......one at a time.

Solve : External says that it needs formatted. But, I want to save the files.?

Answer»

I have a bunch of pretty important files on my external hard drive. It has worked fine for the longest time now. I let a friend of mine hold on to it to work on music (we are in a music group together). Today he called me and said that he hasn't had it plugged into his computer (running vista) since mid october, but when he did today it said that it needed to be formatted. The files on the external are VERY important to us, but I can't find a way around it. Can someone please help me?

Plug it in to your machine while the power is off.
Power up.
Right clik My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the external drive and right clik it and select Properties.

Report back with the results.
If it SAYS RAW under Properties then it was most likely unplugged without using the Safely Remove Hardware tool and your data is most likely gone...layout: simple
type: basic
file system: raw
status: healthy

so it looks like it is probably lost. is there any way at all of possibly recovering it?Wait. How much time do you want to spend?
Here is a long list of Disk Tools. Some claim they can do things you can not do with the Windows tools. Take a look, Some are free.

Solve : mysterious monitor problem?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I need to call on you for another issue. This one is a bit random butit's causing some problems.

My office computer screen no longer works. We've switched screens out but got nothing.

I'm not sure entirely what happened, but a computer "TECHNICIAN" came in and messed with some things that resulted in the issue

He obviously KNEW he did something wrong, or was completely incompetent b/c now he won't answer our calls.

My first guess is he accidentally erased a driver for our video card. My first issue is how can I go about INSTALLATION W/o my screen.

My second is, what other possible issues could be messing w/ the connection between vidcard and screen.See, if your monitor works in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, Windows loads generic video driver, regardless of video card installed. If it works OK in Safe Mode, then, most likely, you have video driver problem. You can download new one from your computer maker web site (or, if it's dedicated video card, from video card manufacturer web site).how do I boot in safe mode? When computer starts, keep tapping F8 key until MENU appears. Quote from: homebuilder on November 30, 2008, 10:06:04 PM

Solve : blank screen when desktop is powered on (not even BIOS screen)?

Answer»

Hi.

The last time I started my desktop computer (Win XP), I got a blank screen, not even the initial bios screen.  The mouse and keyboard don't work either (i.e., the lights on the keyboard and the OPTICAL mouse don't come on)

 Please note the following:
-I confirmed the monitor, keyboard and mouse work by attaching to another computer.
-I opened the chassis and ensured that there aren't any loose cards (memory, graphics), or cables (power cables, drive cables, etc.).
-I tried booting from the Win XP installation disk, but that did not work either (did not get the initial bios screen).
- I had not installed any new software, made any configuration changes or made any BIOS changes prior to this problem.

I'm inclined to BELIEVE it is a BIOS issue (b/c no initial bios screen) and not solely a hard drive issue (b/c did not boot from install disk) or solely a graphics card issue (b/c keyboard lights (e.g., caps lock) and optical mouse light do not turn on)

Any help will be appreciated!!Power supply? The fan in the chassis runs and the chassis lights come on.  Would it still be a power supply issue?  How does one test the power supply?

Thanks for your help. The best way is to borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and SWAP it into your machine...
PSU testers aren't all that reliable. As patio SAID, and to answer your question:

Still possible, because your computer may be not receiving enough juice. Quote from: patio on December 01, 2008, 07:57:07 AM

Solve : 1GB 4870 which one??

Answer»

ok so i was planning on getting the asus dark night edition but its outa stock heres neweggs 1gb 4870 selection
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201069633099%20106792627%201067940678%201068320729&name=1GB
now should i wait for it to come back in stock cause i hear they have better coolers and hand selected chips but the memory clock is 900 mhz where there are others for the same price with faster like these 2 (3600 mhz memory clock)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201069633099%20106792627%201067940678%201068320729&bop=And&CompareItemList=N82E16814161247%2CN82E16814125243
so i dont know if i should go for one with the high memory clock or not it SEEMS like a huge increase 3.6ghz to 900 mhz but there is one with a 1800 mhz memory clock but what also CONFUSES me is some sayd for the memory clock 900mhz, 3.6gbps

what one do you think i should get out of all of those? or wait for them to come in stock? thanks!! It's a 900MHz REAL clock, 3600Mhz effective because it's GDDR5.  So, they're the same speed.
I'd wait for the Dark Knight card though myself - good things are worth waiting for, IMO.here is a comparision list of 7 cards
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201069633099%20106792627%201067940678%201068320729&bop=And&CompareItemList=N82E16814161247%2CN82E16814102801%2CN82E16814125243%2CN82E16814103067%2CN82E16814131120%2CN82E16814121277%2CN82E16814121291

the powercolors memory clock says 925mhz, (3.7 gbps)
would that make a huge difference? the extra 100 mhz?
and thanks calumA small extra memory clock will affect performance slightly, but not all that much.
You can always overclock it yourself.ok ok how MUCH better is the dark night card? how much better is the COOLER and stuff?I can't measure it, I don't have one.
I just know it's better.
Try a GOOGLE, for something like "Dark Knight 4870 temps" and compare them to a stock cooler's temps.couldnt find anything o well ill get it

Solve : fans and on light come on when power cord is plugged in?

Answer»

I have a Gateway 420GR with XP. I had a noise from the PSU fan. I pulled the PSU  out to try to take the fan out. I was unable to open the PSU case, so I put it back in. Now when I plug the power cord in the fans (3)turn and the the light on the on button comes on. the orange light below the power button lights for a second or two. The trays for the cd drives open and CLOSE BUT the is no out put to the monitor. The only WAY to turn  the unit off is to UNPLUG the power cord. What's going on here. NOTHING should happen when I plug in the Ac power until I press the on button. Is the power supply malfunctioning or the hard drive DEAD or what?

Solve : Desktop boots up with distorted lines after vidcard related program BSOD?

Answer»

Hello all. Things have been running rather smoothly for my computer until my computer got a BSOD while I was in the middle of a game(TF2). SO, I just restarted it without really taking good note of what the problem was, but to what I can recall I believe it was my Nvidia display driver which was caught in an infinite loop??? So I reboot the computer to see fuzzy lines and I find out that my computer will shut to a BLANK screen before windows fully loads up.

Here are the pics of what happens when I turn my computer on

this leads into this

and then I press F8 to go to this

With a little trial and error I was able to find the different safe modes, including VGA safe mode which is what I am using on my broken computer at this moment. After I pick safe mode I get one more distorted screen

Then everything works fine  with NO MORE DISTORTED LINES after that in the safe modes.

I have tried switching to multiple different video card drivers and nothing changes. I am guessing it is a motherboard problem or a video card problem. This also doesn't seem like a virus problem  but I am not an expert.

Here are some specs:
XP service pack 2
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT
AMD Athlon 64  2.21 Ghz
1 GB ram

I use spybot, adaware, symantic, hijackthis. Thanks everyone.
Video card or motherboard. As you said.

Try another video card- if it still LOOKS like that- then it's a motherboard issue... OR a BIOS setting related to your video subsystem... Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 30, 2008, 01:13:49 PM

Have no idea how to get to BIOS when the screen looks like that snow. I would probably do more damage than good playing around there. Honestly- I'd be about 80% it's the video card. I had an old ATI card that would kind of do this- but the computer refused to boot with it, and would just beep for missing video, and display a assortment of garble. One easy thing you can try...
Power Down.
Remove all sources of power.
Take off a side panel.
Remove the VID card from it's slot and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser and/or a swab with isopropyl alcohol on it.
While the card is out clean out the inside of the machine with a can of compressed air ( available at any PC store or Wally World ).
When blowing/cleaning out fans hold the blades in place with a Q-Tip.
After cleaning double check all cable connections including power and drive cables.
Replace the vid card making sure to use the hold down screw which ACTS as the cards ground.
Leave the side panel off for now so you can check all fan operations.
Power up and see if this improves things.

Solve : Crashing laptop?

Answer»

Last night for some reason, while playing a very graphically unintense game, my laptop froze up and all of these interesting little designs came across my screen. So I figured it was just a crash, although it had never happened before. So, I restarted and it happened again, with all these staticky-looking lines running down my screen. 3 more times, the same thing happened. So, I left it overnight to cool down and I'm on it now with it unplugged and in BatterySaving mode, so it doesn't use the full processor POWER. Any idea what's going on? I've run this thing on full power with much more graphically intense games and it's gotten much hotter than this before, but has never crashed. If you check my other posts, this thing get into the 90+ degrees Celsius, then again, SpeedFan shows 4 stats, HD0, Temp, Core1, Core 2. Usually, it's Temp that gets to the high temps, but I'm not sure which one matters. Thanks as USUAL. SpeedFan Core1 and 2 are at 80+C running Virus Scanner... Quote

Laptop still under warranty?

Max. temp for your processor is listed at 100C, but 80C is still hot.I'm not sure if it's still under warranty. It says 24M on the bottom of the laptop under warranty so I assume that means that it has a two year warranty (duh.) However, I bought this laptop online from a website, so I don't know whether or not it's the website warranty or the manufacturer warranty. It'd definitely be worth to check, since heat issue on laptop is not easy to deal with. Was good for a couple of days, was able to play some games with no problems. Again, today I was just surfing the web and it did the same thing. It wouldn't even start up, it would power up, but wouldn't show any graphics. So is my graphics card going? This laptop has had heat problems since I've had it, I just figured, well it's a gaming laptop, it's supposed to get hot. Just that now it seems like the heat is really damaging it.I can't advice you anything else beside what I already said.Do I contact the manufacturer or the website that I bought it from? This sucks, two weeks before finals >_ Quote

Solve : Double Monitor Problem?

Answer»

Hi All,
I am SETTING up an advertising system for my business and I have a Dell Optiplex 170L running Windows XP SP2 Pentium 4 & 2.66GHz

What I have done is bought this computer and a 22'' LCD monitor. As my computer only has 1 VGA port I bought a "Y" SPLITTER eg: http://cgi.ebay.ie/NEW-PC-MONITOR-TO-VGA-Y-SPLITTER-CABLE-ADAPTER_W0QQitemZ260319087064QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item260319087064&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

1 Also bought 20 metres of VGA cable as the monitor for displaying the ads is a good bit away from the computer.

I plug in the "Y" splitter and the computers monitors VGA cable and that's ok. However, when I plug in the 20metre VGA cable the IMAGE on the computers monitor goes all blurred (I didn't even try hooking up the 22'' monitor as it would be fairly pointless) Is this a problem with the computer, splitter or cable? Please help me.

ThanksThe only way to know is to swap components until it works.

Alan <><  Your video card has to support dual monitors.

Till yesterday, the drive could be found in "My Computer" as drive:G, when I used to put in the pen drive, but now it cannot be found.Right click My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management...does it show up there ?
If so right click it and select PROPERTIES...post back with your findings.Have you restarted the computer?

When you plug it in, EXACTLY what happens?

Have you tried different USB ports (Including the ports at the back of the computer for desktop computers) Quote from: patio on May 09, 2009, 07:00:10 AM

Do you mean the pen drive ? It MUST be around 6 months old.

Yes I restarted the computer. With the drive in the other machine burn/copy the data to save it.
Then format the pendrive in Disk Management and copy a small .txt file to it when it's done...
Now plug it in to the laptop and see if you can open the .txt file.

Solve : I need help building a PC...?

Answer»

Hi there folks!
It's me, Milesman... the beginner. Well not really a beginner. I am also an ANIMATOR so I need a fairly inexpensive PC, and yet able to complete complex tasks. So I had a realization!

Build my own PC! I have found a PERFECT KIT at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4660161&sku=B69-1065&SRCCODE=WEM1922BY&cm_mmc=Email-_-Main-_-WEM1922-_-barebone. I was WONDERING, is there some instructions out there for assembleing these machines? Or at least where to put the hard drive, fan, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, ETC... So if you could help that would be great!

Best wishes,
Miles M

AKA MilesmanHey mate, i'll be glad to help out, just tell me what you know about computers, and so far what have you done, and we will continue from there. OK, I am ordering the motherboard, the CPU, the case, the power supply, and the internal cooling fan. Came out to be cheap! I have a lot of experience working with computers, but not building them! I think it should be fun.

Thanks,

Solve : Dual monitor resolution problem?

Answer»

Hi, I have a user who just GOT a new Dell laptop. He also has a 21 in monitor. I am trying to get him setup with dual display which works. He WANTS the same display on both monitors but I cannot get the resolution to work independently on each. I have tried using nvidia control panel and the Windows display SETTINGS to adjust but when I change the resolution so it looks clear on the external monitor the laptop screen is just a blank desktop. No icons, taskbar or anything.Press the Function key on the keyboard and the key that switches your display.

I.e. FN + F7.

(http://www.carthage.edu/ais/media/images/hands.JPG)Hi thank you for the reply. I tried that. I can get the display on both but not independent resolutions. You cannot get independent resolutions when mirroring your primary monitor. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a mirror.

To change the resolution on the second monitor, you must change it on the primary monitor too.Have a look at Professor Messers' session on video displays

Solve : Computer won't boot up or run the System Recovery disc?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an HP M9000t desktop running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. As of today, it has decided not to start up. When the power is turned on, the initial noise that usually goes away once the system loads remains. There are no lights on the keyboard, and the monitor displays a monitor status box stating that there is no input signal and promptly goes to sleep. This happens in a matter of seconds, and nothing else is displayed on the monitor screen. I tried to use the System Recovery disc, but the COMPUTER does not load it either. I can only assume that the hard drive is bad since it won't even run the recovery disc. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Can I ask what the noise is and where is it coming from?I'm assuming the noise is the fan. It's the same usual noise that would always happen once we turned on the computer which would stop once everything booted up. Now, nothing happens and the noise persists.I dont mean to ask silly questions but are there any CD/DVD's in your drive or any USB attachments when you boot up? That includes Sd cards or memory sticks?Nothing in the drives and no attachments other than the printer on USB.Try a different monitor.

When was the last time you blew the DUST out of the computer with a can of compressed air?I took care of the dust buildup very recently. It kept randomly restarting, and once I blew the dust out, that problem diminished, although it would still do that occasionally. I've read that Vista has that issue, so I've learned to live with it.I don't think your hard drive is bad, since you get no image on the screen at all. The sound you mentioned makes me SUSPECT that the power supply needs to be replaced. How familiar are you  with the hardware of computers? Power supplies can be one of the toughest components to install. When we REBOOT our computer many times our hard disk going to rough. Now you can boot with bootable cd.Thank you for your posts.  I've replaced RAM and other cards before, but not the power supply. It does have many CONNECTIONS, and I've bookmarked some specific info for my model on HP's website for replacing the power supply. I'll just have to be patient, careful and see what happens. I'll let you know the results when I'm done.Patience and being careful are the keys so you're already ahead of the game...
Most connections can only go in one way so take it a step at a time...

Let us know.Wait! Before you go pulling out the power supply, open your case and confirm that it is what is making the noise.i know this post is a few weeks old but was wondering if you had solved your problem. i ran across this post while searching for help with my own problem so i thought i'd throw in my 2 cents. if you haven't replaced the power supply and still want to, it's not as complicated as you may think. i've replaced mine twice with no problems other than the first new one i bought died on me in a few days and i had to replace it again. just pay close attention to where everything is connected to. another thing you might want to check if you haven't got it running yet is making sure the power supply is completely plugged into the motherboard. i've had this happen to me before. if you have dropped or had something bang against the computer tower, it's possible the power supply could have become even slightly dislodged from the motherboard. i can't remember for sure if my fan stopped working when that happened but i do know that nothing would come up on my screen. i at least remember that much. hope you're up and running! Before you remove the existing PS, photograph all your connections with a digital camera. Then when you put in the new one, you'll have a visual map of how it all connects.

Solve : GeForce 9500GT......or 9500M GS ????

Answer»

Hey guys...

Recently I bought a "GEFORCE 9500GT 512MB DDR3" Here is a link to the page

I installed the drivers and everything...Just to have it tell me, it not what it appears on the surface...see attached the GPU-z screenie.

I tried google...not really many results or help.

Anyone have any clue what this is?

[attachment deleted by admin]Does that little 512mb Sticker actually APPEAR on the hardware, that is in the picture in the link you have provided?

And can you do a uninstall and restart to see if windows picks it up properly the next time around?I have tried a lot of things...

I actually took the card out and inspected it, it only has 2 actual memory chips, where there should be 6-8...

So, looks like I've been duped.

I'll TRY get it replaced for a REAL 9500GT, failing that, a refund.Generally CPU-Z reports hardware very acurrately...
Sorry 'bout your luck. Quote from: patio on MAY 08, 2009, 07:11:55 AM

Sorry 'bout your luck.

yea...He promised to refund my money though, thankfully.

It is interesting to NOTE though...some smart person reflashed the BIOS of the cart to report a 9500GT with 512MB or RAM, and yet it runs a 9500m GS GPU...on a card?

So there must be some type of transferrance between a dedicated onboard to PCI-e somehow. The 256Mg cards actually only needed a flash to go to 512 Mg for quite some time...
This was a well kept Industry secret as it cost the same to crank out a gazillion 512Mg cards and throttle them back rather than having 2 different production runs...
Unfortunately because your card is actually a 128Mg this will not apply here.Yep, I even checked the GPU...it's a laptop chipset soldered to a PCI-e Board

Didn't even know this was possible...anyway, refund for me!

i know there diffrent KINDS but which one do i use cause im thinking about upgradingYou can find out what RAM you have by either looking at the chip itself, or using a program such as Everest:

after i installed it where do i go when i launch it?WAIT here are my specs

That's the site! I forgot what the link was.

According to the HP site, your computer uses 184 pin, DDR1-333 SDRAM.

If you're looking for more RAM, TAKE that information to the computer store and they'll understand.heres what i got

Solve : New Video Card problems...Money wasted??

Answer»

Okay, I just bought a PCI Ndivia 8400GS 512MB VIDEO card from bestbuy. I got it so that games like Left4Dead and World of Warcraft would play a little SMOOTHER. Boy was I wrong about this. This video card is worse than the old 1 that came with my computer. The game skips and lags a lot worse than before...I really have lost all my patience with this stupid thing... It really seems like everything else besides games is going faster and it looks better...Here are my specs.

Microsoft XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
HP Compaq Presario
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
2.19 GHz, 960MB of RAM

Model# is SR1650NX

Thanks in advance if you can help...This video card has caused me nothing but trouble so far... x.x
Not sure why that card would not perform well but i WOU;d return it and maybe spend a little more for a newer version.did you get the latest drivers?  do all the requirments match the games? The 8400GS is a low end card, and will not handle gaming well at all.
What did this card replace? It replaced a ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Series. When I checked on Systemrequirementslab.com before the new video card it said it wouldnt play Left4Dead or Sims3. Now that I PUT the new Video card in, it SAYS I pass all requirements. I have a feeling I need more RAM, since it's a 512MB card. I would think I need like 1g+ of RAM, and all I have is 960mb of RAM. I have the latest driver.I am wondering what Brand of Card that is, Best Buy is Notorious for getting the cheapies in there even if they are Gigabyte and such... Don't put too much trust in systemrequirementslab.com and other sites like that.
You may pass the minimum requirements, but not well.
I agree that video card should give slightly better performance than the onboard chip though.
Check that the onboard video is disabled to avoid conflicts.

Sorry ... that seems contradictory.  Would you mind explaining, please? There are cards that through Gigabyte, have a special code to them that are made with some parts removed, they are designed to be *Entry* level cards and not really good for any current games, and a GS is usually in that level, but depending on the brand you can get drivers that in some cases are designed to work with that and function normally.

I have run into cards like this rarely, but those people did know about the issue.
I would have to re-read the info I was givin a long time ago.
Eitherway, they may not do that anymore.I've always liked Gigabyte hardware myself, I wasn't aware they produced cards with parts removed.
"GS" is a suffix used by Nvidia to denote a lower-end card, it's not a manufacturer code.
I'll have to research this further I think.so its more like a cpu then?  It can be rated to run at differnt speeds.

Solve : Display problems only getting worse!?

Answer»

We had some bad storms come in and in the midst of shutting down my computer the electricity went out briefly. The computer came back on and the display was fine. I proceeded to got ahead and shut everything down.

The following afternoon, when I turned on my computer... the display was cloudy, had a green tint and I had no internet connection. After a few hours with my internet provider technical support, they told me that I needed a new network card and I would be better off buying a new computer. I simply used the USB cable that came with my modem to BYPASS the ethernet. Now I have an internet connection again but, my display is still bad and is steadily getting worse. Now everything is darker and has a blue tint.

I made the mistake of stopping by a repair shop and speaking to someone about getting a new video card. I was told computers aren't built these days to add onto.    I may not know much about computers but, I know better than that. Yes, my video card is part of the motherboard but I do have a PCI EXPRESS slot available. Is it my card or do I need to replace the cord or it is something else? What do I need to fix?

Try BORROWING a screen to test first, to see if it is the monitor.

Then try to borrow a known working PCI-e card, as yes, if yours is built in to the motherboard, it will ALLOW you to use another card.

generally however, this sounds to me like more of a monitor issue than a video card issue, as the colour changed, and I believe if the onboard card was that messed up, it shouldn't boot. Thanks for the reply. When I read your response I had already bought a video card, which did fix the problem. I installed it myself and it was very simple. I'm just glad I didn't take it to a repair store. This WHOLE experience has raised my curiosity, now I'm wanting to learn more about pc's. Just not sure where to begin. Anyways-- Thanks again.  Quote

I think you MIGHT be on to something, JJ 3000.....I thought it was forum policy not to help with homework... It's not forum policy to not help with homework.

If someone comes with a homework question, we are not to do it for them. We can point them in the RIGHT direction, but not do it for them.

I did exactly that in Reply #7.why make this a POLL?

Solve : Upgrading to USB 2...?

Answer»

After endless pop-ups telling me that "this device can perform faster", I have decided to upgrade to USB 2.0, HOWEVER there are a few questions this noob needs to ask. Is it more involved than just swapping out the old one. Also, I've looked at cards with several ports and ones with just a COUPLE, for about the same price. Any reason for this? Is not more better? Do you have a favorite?

Mind Computer Products
Intel Celeron 1.80GHz
1 GB Ram
WinXP HOME / SP2
Mainboard ECS P4VMM2
S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR
Vinyl AC'97 Audio
AVG free, Spybot, Ad-aware, RegCure, SUPERAntiSpyware
CCleaner, HyJackthis, Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareMore is better...
This will not change your EXISTING USB ports...only the ones on the PCI card will be 2.0Agreed.

I've used a four-port USB card in a PCI SLOT on a desktop computer with no problems.

This will be a good upgrade for the computer, at a relatively low cost.especially if you dont have that many.

Solve : disc read error?

Answer»

The other night I heard my computer restart and thought nothing of it. The next morning i turned on the monitor to read "disc read error has occured. Press ctrl+alt+del..."

I'm only able to access bios which does detect the hd. I have a student xp install disc and figured I could manage it's repair/recovery, but I didn't see any option of the sort.

I wouldn't be worried except that there's a bunch of infos I'd like to retrieve and I don't have another pc i could hook my hd to and backup what's necessary. Before i consult a professional and dish out cash i don't have, was curious if ANYONE could pass some information along to help me determine the possible problem or perhaps remedy it.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. If the BIOS does not detect the drive your HARD drive may be toast...it does see it, i havent experienced anything erratic in the past months and it doesn't make any funky noises or anythingIf your system is working? you could use a external drive to transfer files ect.Sounds like a good idea, theres an option in bios to boot from a removeable device, but I'm not sure if it's possible to install an operating system on an external hd and boot from it as well? never tried it and don't know anyone who has.

If so, I can see how it'd be possible copying the dataMight want to google [acronis] Quote from: robwalker on May 10, 2009, 02:41:52 PM

Getting a PC to boot from an external with any flavor of Windows can be a real chore...
Run chkdsk /r on that drive...this will take awhile.
Re-boot afterwards and then look into Xavier's suggestion above. To RECOVER your files, i would do the following:
install a linux system (if you're not familiar with linux and you're not that good with COMPUTING, choose a larger, user-friendly distro like openSuse or Ubuntu. Otherwise, a lightweight distro is faster. i recommend Vector Linux or PCLinuxOS)

install it either on your normal HDD or on an external one (i believe PCLinuxOS fits on a usb. i know that DamnSmallLinux does anyway :p ) then recover your files by mounting your windows (ntfs) partition and copying the files; you may have to force the mount. it's at your own risk, but in my opinion theres not really a large chance it will do any damage.

if you want to try this method, look carefully on linux help websites, and ofcourse on your own distro's website. they should provide all info necessary.

if you need any further help, PM me

ps: after you've saved your data, do a low-level format with Hiren's BootCD (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd) and reinstall your system.

Solve : What's wrong with my computer??

Answer»

My son, who's really good with computers, helped me build a new computer. We bought a case with a power supply, a new mother board, and imported the processor, the RAM, and the Hard drives from the old computer. All was WELL until I shut it down and unplugged it because it was lightening. When I turned it back on, I GOT this weird screen:

"main processor" and lists details about the processor
blank line
blank line
blank line

at the bottom of the page it says:
"Press F8 to enable system configuration"
"Press F9 to select Booting Device"
"Press DEL to enter setup"

nothing happens when I press any of these. We unplugged and replugged all the connections on the board. When we turned it back on It was fine again. I left it on overnight, and when I got up in the morning, we were back to square one. He has the same case and board, but used a different power supply. His computer runs fine. We TRIED USING a brand new power supply (the one that came with his case), but it didn't help. We're stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

Start off by dis connecting >leaving the cpu>heat sink mounted securily to the cpu> heatsink fan connected to the board> video connected to the monitor>1 stick of ram> keyboard.Power the pc on to SEE if you get a display. Try going into bios.On a new Motherboard you need to verify that the jumpers are set properly. Pay attention to the CMOS battery. Even a new Motherboard could have a bad one. Or the jumper for the battery was not set to its proper state.

Now if the documentation does not provide a clear answer to the problem, consider asking the vendor for a return of merchandise allowance.just a thought is your keyboard and mouse usb ..
sometimes usb fails to work as bios doesn't support usb....

Solve : RAID 0 ...screwed up during system restore now cursor with black screen?

Answer»

I have a set of drivers I had installed for a LINE 6 guitar port USB device, after install the screen went black . I tried using system restore to go back prior to install but something stopped and now. IF I boot, I will get the Vista "microsoft corporation" bar on the bottom, then just a moveable cursor and black background. I am using STAT Western Digital DRIVES with the ASUS P4C 800 E Deluxe mobo.  RAID 0 configuration.  I am planming to get a new pair of drives and just use a SATA setup with new op system and NO RAID..Is there any way to install teh old drives and access the folders for the new drive?

Using the repair function of the install DVD for Vista says' Only those shown can be system restored but it shows nothing. ALSO says it is in limited diagnostic state. Almost as if those drives are not being seen.

Thanks  AL

3gb ram, 3.6mHz P4 CPU CD-ROM and DVD RWNot saying this will work but i would go into the bios and load default drivers then reboot.
Then go back into bios reset everything if you dont know before hand take a note of the bios setting unless
you have the manual of course, then go to boot option select your first boot as cd rom
restart and load your windows disk. follow on screen instruction for the option for repair xp /vista ?
hope this helps...

Solve : Installed internal modem, now TV tuner will not scan channels. Conflict??

Answer»

I,ve just installed a D-Link 562IS internal MODEM into a computer that had NEVER had one in it before. Since installing the modem, the TV tuner wil not pick up channelswhen I scan for them.

The tuner is a WinFast DTV2000 Hybrid PCI Tuner, the computer is Intel E67502.6Ghz Core2 Duo, MS XP Pro, ECS 512MB8600GT, Seagate 500G 32MB, 5.1.2600 Service PACK 2 Build 2600, Corsair 2G TwinX 6400C5kit, and I don't know what else is relevant.

I have tried uninstalling the modem driver and re-installing both the tuner and the modem, TV tuner still will not scan channels, however the program still plays back recorded video clips and is doing everything except scanning for channels + CAPTURING live TV. I'm wondering if the computer is conflicted? Any help would be great, thanks.

Solve : Got a dead pc on my hands?

Answer»

I have a couple of HARD drives from an OLD pc that I tried hooking up to the new pc to GET the files off of them.  I first hooked them up SUCCESSFULLY a couple of weeks ago. (one at a time).  Well today, I  had some free time so I went to swap them out again after I got what I needed off of the first one.  I have to remove the heatsink to be able to install them into the drive bay, but I've done that plenty, and took the necessary precautions regarding static.  After I plugged in and installed the second drive, I hit the power button on the tower and......nothing.  Absolutely nothing.

No lights, no movement, no beeps, no nothing. Even the power button feels different, like not as springy, is the only way I can describe it. I've scanned through some of the other dead computer threads, to see what they had to say.  So I've checked out my power supply, made sure all the connections were secure, anything I could think of.

It's an E Machine's AMD Dual Core 64, 4 gig Ram...that's all I can think of right off the top of my head.

Any help is appreciated. It sounds like your power button has become mis-alighned. Is there anyway you can get to the back of the power button? Some power buttons have a spring behind them and this can come loose and mis-seat itself. You may have to re-seat the spring. No expert on power buttons though mate just thinking of my old T.V button that did something similar. The button felt... squashy rather than a click if that makes sense.eMachines are also notorious for low-budget underpowered PSU's...
See if you can BORROW another one of the same or greater wattage to swap it in there to test.

Another thing is sometimes the BIOS will get confused when swapping more than one drive...re-check all jumpers and swap only one at a time from here out.im wondering if you have pulled of one on the f panel wires by accident..
i've had it before when i had the reset button on the wrong way and the power
button felt as though i was dead.......
not saying it is the same for you but it could be worth a shot....did you check how the paste was?So, it all worked with the first drive installed?  Is the second drive still in working order?

I had a hard drive go bad.  I put it in two different computers as a slave, and neither computer would even start.  Removed the drive, and each booted and worked just fine.Linux can fix that if there not spinning and we have various techniques to get them working.
