Solve : Conflicting scan results from Crucial.com? |
Answer» Keep us posted. Quote from: patio on May 30, 2008, 07:29:53 PMWell, the memory finally arrived and I tried installing it as per Crucials' support instructions. Said I didn't need jumpers, but after a FAILURE to boot up, they took another look at the motherboard scan and decided that I needed them after all. And now, to the jumpers...QuoteHi, i wouldnt rely on there diagnostics. go here Radio Shack closed all their stores in Canada. They won't even sell to Canada, period! So much for free trade. I can not find these jumpers anywhere here. I could not find any "spares" on this machine or the old one it replaced. I'm stumped. I was hoping one of you knows of some place that does or perhaps, would arrange to sell some to me. I really want the 2 Gigs of memory I can put in this machine. I would hate to have to settle for more SDRam and its' limited memory. I can only seem to find 520 Megs. Is that its' maximum? Are there no computer stores in Canada? It doesn't have to be a Radio Shack. Any computer shop should have jumpers. http://www.stsi.biz/m055-01.htmlJJ 3000, thanks for the link. I did a 411 business search and found lots of places, but could not find any willing to part with the jumpers. They tried to steer me towards sending them my computer so they could find and REPAIR all its' faults. I tried to explain I lived near the Arctic circle and the shipping costs would pretty much brake the bank. For sure, the phone calls killed my long distance budget for the next several months. So tonight, I ordered a bunch of jumpers from that site. Again, thanks for the info. Now, if I can only figure out how to use them. I opened the computer today and it don't look as neat and pristine as the manual. It's not as hard as you think it is to attach the jumpers. Make sure you ground yourself before touching any internal components of your machine to protect against ESD. Ideally you would want a grounding wristrap and a gounding mat , but you can just touch the computer case and ground yourself to it as long as you are making contact to the metal frame. The only tool you need to attach the jumpers is a slim pair of needle nose pliers. |

Solve : CD Drive wont detect discs.? |
Answer» Yeah, I would wait until your out of options before trying to remove those keys then. To my knowledge if these keys were corrupted as this is what usually happens, it will throw a error in Device Manager to my knowledge. Listen to others and I'll see if I can FIND out what else might be the cause. I'm guessing the power is working ok and the cd's spin when inserted as usual? |

I didnt know there was such a thing as "F Lock". ANYWAY, I got Vista installed on it and all is well so far. Im not sure there is a jumper next to the HD SATA connector, but i could be wrong.... Solve : Does the OS responsible for the colour quality?? |
Answer» I upgraded my computer using the OS recovery disk. The computer came with a very poor colour quality of only 4bit and only ONE option appear which is the 4bit. How can I fix this? What information should I add when submitting a question?KNOWING none of your hardware 1.)update graphics card driver if this doesnt fix it 2.) new graphics card What information should I add when submitting a question? Try what Broni says.We need information friend. The computer used Window XP then one day I boot it then it stop and start again when it comes to the PART for me to logon. It went like that over and over for days. So I used the recovery disk and it reach to the part for logon but I hardly see anything. I check the display setting and it only has 4bits on color quality. However it wasn't like that before I used the Recovery Disk. I hope you didn't have anything valuable stored on the computer... Recovery disks have a tendency to wipe the drive and reinstall all factory settings. Which is strange- did you happen to get the graphics card changed since you purchased the computer? Because the recovery CD would install the graphics driver for the card that was originally in the computer.Nah, I haven't change the video card since purchased. Is there ANYWAY I can fix this problem? Clik on Broni's link above before we go further...we don't even know if this is a laptop or a desktop for now. |

Solve : Ext. HD drive letter is wrong =/? |
Answer» Ok last night my music suddenly stopped playing, and I found the reason was that my LAPTOP thought my external HD was plugged in twice. The usual letter for the drive is E. However it also showed G. When I physically DISCONNECTED the HD, only the G disappeared. So I thought this was weird, but it was late so I didnt really bother thinking too much, I was going to bed. This mornming I booted up, and tere it is again, only now it comes up as G, and no E is present at all. This is really inconvenient because I have ALOT of data on the external HD which is associated with 'E:/...'. Is there any way to put it back to recognising the drive as E, and is there any way I can avoid this HAPPENING again? |

Solve : {Choosing or matching the right memory upgrades}?? |

Answer» have a 98' dell dimension L400c desktop , has a 2 -memory slots , memory {help guides} POINT to using 512mb max, pc100, sdram, non-ecc, unbuffered, 100mhz, CL2-CL3? present memory: micron 256mb pc133, 133mhz, CL3, the dell pc seems to run good with newer design not recommend or should i pull this micron pc133 to PLAY it safe? The 133 is running at 100 since that is what the MBoard supports...if you are having no issues leave it.Try going to CRUCIAL website. they will scan your PC and tell you what memory they recommend. very good company. I just PURCHASED 2GB off them WORKED first time on fitting. By the way if you fit new memory it should be in matching pairs, ie 2 the same type and value.if you put in a faster ram speed it will automatically go down to the speed of the mother board. Solve : All ram not showing up?? |
Answer» I have an Athlon 2.4ghz pc running WINDOWS XP Pro with a Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 AM2 NFORCE 570 MOBO, with 2gb ram. I recently purchased (cheap!) 2gb from a friend who was tearing down his old PC and decided to install them in my system. Yeah, I know 4gb is overkill, but I have it, so why not? Anyway, I installed both chips, but my pc is only showing 3.25gb ram, instead of 4gb. Why? I know the max ram for my mobo is 4gb, so that shouldn't be a problem. Suggestions?a 32bit OS will not see more then 3.25-3.5gb's of RAM. if you want to access the FULL 4gb, you will need to purchase a 64 bit OS.Ahh, that explains it. So if I don't switch to a 64bit OS it won't cause any problems though, right?no. you will be fine, it just MEANS that little bit of RAM will not be used. |

Solve : Display, GFX issue? (Dot patterns)? |
Answer» I made a slight change in the primay IDE from auto to something else, saved it (F10), and rebooted. Questions; As far as I know, the 9550 doesn't do this. I have one on one of my computers.I heard some beeps, but it was not beeps, more like "punches" coming from the harddrive. Does that say anything? Those stopped however, after the fifth reboot, or so.Those "punches" you're hearing are more than likely your HDD powering up. That is of course, speculation on my part. OK. I'm not throwing sticks at you here. Your problem is becoming more apparent. Disconnect your Packard from electrical power---pull the plug. Open your side panel. Locate the battery on your mother board. Remove the battery. This is a quick fix for "flashing" or re-setting BIOS. RE-insert the battery and boot. Listen to the beeps, if any. Please answer my previous question: Before this problem occured and you booted, did you hear any beeps? This is important. On your mobo there is a small two wire speaker that tranmits BIOS beeps when you boot. It looks like a magnet but it's a speaker. I'm beginning to think either your battery needs replacement or you have a problem with your mobo. pink spots or pink patterns are 99% of the time is a video card dying or electronic interference. id suggest trying a new driver or moving your computer to a different room. If not you may have to buy a new video card its timr for an upgrade anyway saf-beagle Why don't you state the obvious first 'Graphics card'. Computers these days ( no offence) are made a lot easier to fix. A dumb question but you arent overclocking the card using something like ATi Tray Tools? Once I went a bit to far and just over time the card got worse and worse...eventually becoming unreadable! Another thing...you say u checked the card was in correctly...you didnt accidentally unplug the Hard drive or bump the cables? also...the "punches"..sort of like a rip cord being PULLED? this could be your hard drive's final call too. Do you have ONBOARD video you can use to rule out or prove it's the Radeon?Beagle, there were never any beeps when booting, regulary. I'm sorry, I missunderstood your question at the start. That is not uncommon Beerdude22. For a mass produced PC like yours, you would think Packard Bell would at least install the mobo loud speaker. Anyway. Back to your problem. The information you've provided up to now is pointing to your mobo itself or the battery. Your initial problem was the "dot pattern" screen, followed by HDD failure which BIOS no longer detects. Those are two devices: Video card and hard drive. AGP and IDE connections. "What are the odds?" You've checked your monitor. Thats working fine. You can post to BIOS. BIOS does not detect the hard drive hence, you cannot start windows. I read through the system specifications for your PC and it seems your Packard Bell is equiped with a "OEM" ( = original equipment manufacturer or better explained someone else built it, I put my name on it ) mobo: http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php?i=ms055a Luckily, you should be able to pick up an inexpensive 775 socket for under $25. Good LUCK and reply with your results. Alright, thanks a lot, however, I just sent on service. So we'll see what the problem is, when it arrives back. Thanks a lot for the help, accordingly. <3 |

Solve : Question about CPU FSB? |
Answer» The motherboard in my system is SY-P4VSA. The Chipset s VIA P4X266 and it supports 400MHZ FSB. I have an INTEL Pentium 4 1.8GHz 400MHz 256KB Socket 478 CPU installed now. P4VSA http://www.soyo.com/content/FAQ/47/?o_id=17 As stated above it only supports 400mhz FSB processors, but if your MB allows for you to adjust the multiplier manuallly you could ramp up the multiplier by .5x and see if you can squeeze more power out of it. Be sure you have a good heatsink that can take the heat away so you dont cook it. Also, I'd replace that P4 1.8Ghz / 256k Cache / 400 Mhz CPU with a P4 2.0Ghz / 512k Cache/ 400Mhz CPU to get double the cache if you are going to want as much power as possible. Also from my experience, I have two 533Mhz FSB CPUS and they dont like to downclock on the FSB to work at 400Mhz. So I am in the hunt in another posting here for info on the max speed 400Mhz FSB CPU EVER made, so I can get teh most power from my eMachine motherboard. Good Luck... and if you can find a 2.0Ghz / 512k Cache/ 400Mhz, I'd get it for the double L2 Cache |

Solve : Extra IDE Card For HD? |
Answer» Okay I got this card out of a machine that I had got from my dads boss, Its a maxtor PCI IDE Card. The thing is I dont know how to set these up does it connect to the IDE connector on the BOARD or do you just connect to the card?It GOES into a PCI slot. It enables you to use more than 4 IDE drives on a machine. And the answer to your question would be yes...6. Some IDE controller cards have more than one slot so a card with 2 could support an additional 4 drives...I wondered, SORRY for wasteing your time a little new with this old card since I dont have any or USED any in my other machines. |

Solve : Best way to get more hard disk space? |
Answer» HI, I am currently running windows XP but my pc only has 20gb of memory/space (old pc). My local disk (c drive) only has 3 GB of space left. I have done disk cleanups, removed old pragrams etc but I just really need more space. I was wondering what you suggest is the best way to go. I am not very savvy when it comes to opening up the case and putting things in there. A friend suggested purchasing an external hard drive which apparantly are quite reasonable in price. Is this a good option or am I better off taking my pc to a computer store and having them increase my GB's for me? Thanks I'd bring it to a computer shop if you are doubting yourself and you have important data on it that is not backed up etc. If you want more space safely, you could enable drive compression on the hard drive and gain more space....only downside is that all data has to decompress from its compressed state so it slows the computer down to gain the storage space. Best option is to have someone migrate your data to a new larger HD, but if you dont want to spend any money and dont mind the computer slowing down, you can use drive compression which is very easy to turn on for more space.I would get an external drive or an IDE card that will allow your pc to have up to four DRIVES. Then you can just move what ever into the BLANK drive freeing your c. Also if you dont feel like attempting that you could just burn it to cds.Do you know anyone who is adept at installing components ? ? This would save you the money a shop will charge. If you buy a larger drive and have someone install it they can just use the FREE utilities from the new drive manuf. site and "clone" the old smaller drive to the new one. This is a relatively simple process that would TAKE under an hour or so... You could then format the old drive and use it for additional storage. Quote from: patio on May 11, 2008, 12:04:07 PM Do you know anyone who is adept at installing components ? ? Didn't think of that. Also a good idea thanks Pat for posting it, probably would have remembered an posted it latter. |

Solve : Overclocking a sound card to 3.5MHz?? |
Answer» Is it possible to overclock a sound card (or at least the DAC) to 3.5MHz so that it is possible to transmit composite video signals. I have an RF modulator, and an amplifier is really easy to make, so I was hoping to find a way to CREATE my own TV transmitter. I realize that only low-power is legal. The PC could do all the encoding processing (I mean, it is a computer...). The point is not performance, they make graphics cards for that, the point is proof of concept. Quote Is it possible to overclock a sound card i suppose its possible, HOWEVER i cannot assist you in this for i have NEVER heard of anyone even attempting to overclock a sound card. OK, so I guess I'll be trying something new. If I succeed I will report. If not, WELL... Quote from: homer on May 09, 2008, 09:39:26 PM QuoteIs it possible to overclock a sound card If overclocked high enough they turn into vid cards... Quote from: patio on May 10, 2008, 06:23:53 AM Quote from: homer on May 09, 2008, 09:39:26 PMQuoteIs it possible to overclock a sound card That's quite the point. However 640x480x60 = 18MHz, Composite = 3.5MHz. Easier to clock it to 3.5 than 18. Actually, It would be possible to have 3 composite output channels with a video card, and 2 with a sound card. Cuz, aren't vid cards and sound cards basically just DACs, or even a modem, but that's not nearly fast enough, or the right kind of DAC.What's a DAC? Digital to Analog Converter?Ok, from what I know on the subject (because I know people who have tried it) you can "overclock" a sound card by increasing the FSB (front side bus) speed. However, it resulted in worse quality sound. Cracking and popping a lot. I would say it is unwise and could potentially damage the card. As for overclocking the sound card itself, I've never heard of that being known or of any way to go about doing it. It's not by any means a regular practice. What would be the point? It wouldn't increase sound performace or anything. Not exactly like overclocking a CPU or VPU. For the situation you're thinking about, it might help, but like I said, I know of no way to do it.How about doing it like you would a Nintendo DS? By replacing the clocking circuit. Quote from: linuxlover on May 10, 2008, 04:03:52 PM How about doing it like you would a Nintendo DS? By replacing the clocking circuit. Now you're getting into things I don't know about. I've never tried modifying a sound card like that. It's worth some research, but be careful what you do or you might end up breaking something more important or shorting something out. What exactly is your end goal? There might be another way to get what you want with more conventional means. Quote from: quaxo on May 11, 2008, 12:32:28 AM Quote from: linuxlover on May 10, 2008, 04:03:52 PMTo make a programmable RF transmitter. There are video cards for such things, I know. It's just a personal project. I was thinking maybe I coiuld use a video card instead, because a video card runs at 18MHz native and has three channels. One for serial data (to control the amplifier) one for audio, and one for video (composite). However, how would I get it to the precise freq of 3.58xxxxxx...How about doing it like you would a Nintendo DS? By replacing the clocking circuit. |

Solve : Microphone Backwards?? |
Answer» Hi, dunno how this HAPPENED but when I try to use my microphone to chat with people it just plays whatever noises are coming out of my computer and nothing from the MIC. When I go into the thing to setup mic it shows the bars moving whenever a sound from the comp plays. Any idea why its doing this?Check your levels, is MIC set to low and other levels set higher in audio properties?... are you using Vent to chat etc or some other app for chatting?I am using VISTA. when I enter the sound thing under RECORDING tab it has mic, line in, cd audio, and stereo mix. when there is noises coming from the computer mic and stereo mix bars jump LIKE they are speakers and it plays the noises in the chat programs. |

Solve : hard Drive takes almost an hour to boot? |
Answer» I dont know why, but I do not get any errors, it just takes a really long time to boot. I have xp installed, when it finally does boot it works fine. The only thing I can think of is I have the hard drive on IDE channel 1 as the master instead of IDE channel 0. Would that make a difference, it really shouldn't. A little help please!!What are your system specs CPU/RAM etc... To change the drive mode in Win2K/XP travel to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/ Secondary IDE/ Properties....change the mode to UDMA if available or DMA and re-boot for the changes to take effect. 6 consecutive timeouts will force a registry change so that DMA/UDMA is locked out. In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device. A bizarre reason for very slow IDE transfers is if you try to put the ATA plug on the hard disk the wrong way around, the gap called "KEYPIN" (pin 20 on the plug) pushes pin 21 of the hard disk socket and bends it aside. (This pin is responsible for DMA requests of the hard disk.) As the disk can no longer reach the host with its requests, there is a communications problem, and Windows XP switches into PIO mode. A blessing in disguise: You can still save the data, though slower than usual. Few will succeed in repairing the disk. Just pulling the pin straight may not quite CUT it, as the connection to the printed circuit board is probably broken. Well I figured it out, thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!!. Guess what, I was fixing this hard drive for a guy and finally thought, DMA access is the pin that can get broken if you plug your IDE cable in upside down. The pin was broken, hence no dma access and it must have switched to PIO and took forever. I pulled out a pin out of my old cd rom drive and super glued the *censored* into the broken pin slot. OMG it worked. I thought it wouldn't but the drive booted right up. THANKS AGAIN!!! |

Solve : Sound Problems, Conexant and Vista.? |
Answer» Recently the sound on my laptop (HP/Compaq Presario F500, 10 months old) stopped working for no apparent reason. I hadn't installed any new hardware/software or anything else unusual which it might have been linked to and the sound has always worked without problems before. I am using Vista Home Premium (ver 6.0 build 6000) and my sound card is Conexant High Definition Audio. |

Solve : Iwill P4GB Motherboard? |
Answer» Some years ago, I used the Iwill P4GB motherboard to build my own system. I have built my own systems since the mid 1980's. sounds like you need a new cmos battery, I think possibly.Yes - I would agree - but where is the thing? The manual doesn't show it on the board.you dont need a manual to find the battery. assuming you gave the correct model number for your motherboard, the battery location is indicated in the pic below. [recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Homer, Thanks for the photo! You are absolutely right!! I don't need the manual! It is useless - in that there is no mention of the battery in any way shape or form. The Curmudgeon. Quote Thanks for the photo! your very welcome. come back if you have any other questions. |

Solve : Can two different micron memories CL2 & CL3 conflicks , problems or other troub? |
Answer» Have 2 different memory's one being {CL2} & {CL3} the other ,will the two memory's work TOGETHER or maybe CAUSE trouble or maham??SET the memory speed to the slower one, CL31. They'll work if they are each within the range of memory module parameters your motherboard chipset will support. Your system will attempt to RUN with the lowest common denominator set of memory module parameters. |
