Solve : XBOX 360 Wireless for Windows PC problem?

Answer»

Hello, i've searched and searched but cannot find an answer nor any decent support so far. I have just done a CLEAN install of windows 7 onto an SSD, switching my old HDD into the spare caddy after formatting it. The computer is up and running, all drivers installed to original (as running before on my old HDD). However i cannot seem to sync my MICROSOFT XBOX 360 Wireless Controller to my computer via the Reciever Dongle. I have installed the driver from the Microsoft site (win 7 64bit) however it is still not syncing or recognising it. IS there ANYTHING i can do?

I have GONE to Devices and Printers, my dongle reciever is there however is not recognised, so i troubleshoot to diagnose and it comes back saying searching online for drivers, then tells me drivers cant be found and the device is not fixed. However, i have already installed the drivers! :S

Solve : Laptop -> Sony TV = Weird Image?

Answer»

Well, I have a problem with the IMAGE on my TV when I use the HDMI output on the laptop

The image is detected and it says "-> 1920x1080 -> 60Hz"

But then the image is just centered, and it got a black border around itself

I'm unsure, but I think the laptop sends out a 1600x900 image and the TV doesn't know if it should scale up the image

But, wait a second: I have the display settings set so the PRIMARY monitor is 1600x900 and the TV (secondary) is set to 1920x1080

I don't get it, why doesn't the settings apply ?

Information:
Sony 40-inch FullHD 1080p TV
HP PAVILION DV7 Notebook, ATI HD4650 Mobile, Win7 HomeHmm...

Something wasn't quite working, but now it WORKS as I thought it would

So, ehrm, this is solved for now

Solve : Will these Crossfire??

Answer»

Hey thar.

I currently have
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102868

and im looking to crossfire. They currently have this card available.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102898&cm_re=5770-_-14-102-898-_-Product

Is there any difference between these two CARDS other than the slot (one being 2.0 and the other being 2.1)?

will the crossfire? They should. From what I've read, they don't have to be identical, but they do have to be the same MODEL with the same specs (SPEED, memory, etc.).

Here's a chart from ATI showing what cards are compatible with what and which BOARDS:

Solve : My computer is messing up. Why??

Answer»

My computers fan runs very fast and blows out cool air 20 minutes after I start it up. Its not the power supply fan, or motherboard fan. Its the one on the side of the computer. Well I cleaned it and its still doing that. Why is my computers fan running fast?

The voltage switch on the back of my computer was screwed into place, but the screws fell out and now its just hanging in there. Could that be screwing up the cooling system and MAKING the fan RUN LOUD?

ALSO my computer has shut down twice saying it may DAMAGE the inside of the computer. Then I was playing a game and it shut it down more than once. Why is that?Quote

Solve : Do i have the right settings? (Performance Wise)?

Answer»

Thanks for the reply!! But yeah your not helping. But thanks anyway.

You can overclock the graphics card too, but you really won't see a benefit on that card.
It's not a gaming card now, and no overclock you manage to get stable on it will make it a gaming card by any stretch of the imagination.ohh can you recommend me a good gaming card but in the same TIME cheap around the $80 to $100Quote from: BluerjB on July 02, 2010, 05:13:14 PM

ohh can you recommend me a good gaming card but in the same time cheap around the $80 to $100

What games are you going to play? Might want to check out Newegg. They have some good stuff there for the price you wanted, but maybe Calum can help you with the specifics hmmm i dont really know what KIND of games i mean the begraphic quality GAME im playing right now is blur/ crysisYou're playing Crysis with your current setup? Wow ...
Anyway, for that budget you can get (in order of decreasing performance) - a 4850, 9800GT, 5670, GT240, or 4670. All are capable of light to "medium" gaming. For reference, I had an 8800GT (same as the 9800GT) and Crysis was playable on high settings, 1440x900 resolution, with an E8200.
Hope this helps.ok thats works thats... I dont get how im able to play crysis with my setup... that highly unusual huh?Well, sure, I'd imagine you could probably play at very low resolution and all lowest settings ... but, that's not "playing" Crysis.ohh ok then then "playing" crysis would be on hi res... so what would it take to make my computer KEEP up with crysis?Well, playing a game that's one of the best looking games out on all low settings isn't exactly satisying, at least not for me. If you're OK with it, there's no need to upgrade.
To play Crysis with everything maxed, smoothly, isn't something that can be done as far as I know, not with today's technology.
Grabbing one of the better cards I listed, the 4850 or 9800GT, should let you play on mostly high settings.Quote from: Calum on July 04, 2010, 10:39:49 AM

it increases the REPLAY value... you beat it once on low graphics, then when you upgrade your system at some later time you revisit the game again. I did this with a lot of games.

Solve : CPU cooling fan only runs for

Answer»

This is on a self built PC with IBM 830542U mboard. I just got it 2 days ago and blew a ton of dust ect. out of the CPU heat sink, fan, PSU and everything else.
I REPLACED this CPU fan with a similar unit but no joy.
The mboard has 2 - 3 wire sockets (side-by-side) for fan but I get this same issue when the CPU fan is plugged in to either socket. I don't see another 3-wire socket near the CPU.
Is this a normal issue controlled by a CPU temp control? And how do I access this info?
What is the question? You don't like the board? You don't like the design? The fan comes on for 2 to 3 seconds. Did you want 5 seconds?
That KIND of behavior has a name, but I don't remember what it is called. But it is by design. Not by defect. It lets you know the fan is there and well.Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 10:50:06 PM

What is the question? The fan comes on for 2 to 3 seconds. Did you want 5 seconds?
Question = I don't know if this fan cycle is normal for this system - and how can I find out?
On all of my other computers, the CPU fan runs anytime the system is running. This system may be different from the others but I'm just trying to make sure. I suspect some systems have thermal monitoring circuits that can enable/disable the CPU fan as needed.
This may have this feature, and, if so, how do I find out if this is so?
Thanks,
MikeYes, you hare a point. The documentation for that IBM motherboard is hard to find. When the system comes on there are Power On Self Test routines that test components. One of these is to turn on the fan(s) momentarily. Without the documentation, it is hard to say if that feature was on that model.
Do you have speed fan?
Monitor the CPU TEMPERATURE and see if it is inside normal range. The fan should come on when the temperature gets above a certain point. To force it, you might put a blanket over the case for a bit and see if the fan comes on when the temp gets high.
This graph is from Intel and applies to many P4 CPU. It may or may not typify your system.

Notice this is in internal chassis temperature, which you could measure with an ordinarily probe or thermometer.
About 40 C the fan should run a moderate speed. A chassis temp of 40 C is about 104 F and can be hard on a system with a weak fan.
Hope this is of some help.
Check in the BIOS. There is sometimes an option for this.Quote from: quaxo on September 29, 2011, 03:13:36 AM
Check in the BIOS. There is sometimes an option for this.
Yes quaxo, and thank you! I found that setting in the BIOS. The CPU fan is running continuously now. So I would think this suggest that there is a CPU temp monitoring feature on this machine, correct? How do I access the information for CPU temps?

Remote temp = 34c

I don't know what make the BIOS is in that board, but some include (somewhere) temperature readings. The alternative, which you've discovered, is using a Windows program, such as Speedfan.

It is over 101 degrees F here in Northern California. Or 38 degrees C.
My Net gear router is out in the Barn. It stopped working. It was very hot to the touch.
So I pulled it out of its case. Discovered the wireless chip has no HEAT sink. So I put the thing in my protected area in the barn, where the computers have some air conditioning.
And...
I left the router NAKED! See the tireless chip has no fins!

Should I LEAVE it this way?
NOBODY but family sees it undressed.

I am going to guess that you were just a little bored.Yes, we see the chip working tirelessly to provide you with data!

Solve : Trying to find specs for this old IBM 830542u motherboard??

Answer»

This is my friends wife's computer and I'm in the process of eliminating the MALWARE on it and to see if I can get it to run FASTER for her (I'll post the logs in the Malware section later tonight). Right now I'm trying to find out if I can add more memory (presently has (2) 256 Mb modules of DDR2).
It's pretty old, I'm thinking early 200?.
It's not a brand name PC, in a no-name ATX full tower case.
Everest Home Edition list the Mboard as IBM 830542u but I can't seem to find the specs via Google.
Thanks,

Max 2 GB of DDR-266 RAM (FIRST generation), not DDR2 RAM.Thanks for the correction Transfusion! I ACTUALLY had DDR written on a piece of paper in front of my face when I typed this post. Does 'old, worn out, tired, not-too-smart, ADD(candidate), virtually senile, or just plain stupid' account for my posting inaccurate info?
I've now been able to remove enough malware to get it to connect to the internet so I've posted malware logs in the Virus/Malware section to get further assistance from you guru's on here.
On your cue, I purchased/installed a PNY 1Gb DDR PC3200 module for it today and it's much faster ($49.99 at Staples). Gee, they are proud of that old RAM, but she needs this computer pronto - so no time for mail order.
Thanks again,

Solve : processor and ram memory?

hi my question is my processor and ram showing full memory.my processor is 1ghz and ram is 256.when i right click on my computer icon and there i check properties the system shows full memory.in fact system uses some memory for itself then it shows the other.anybody can help me what is reason?I don't understand what you want to say, if you want to SEE how your computer resources (and which processes use those resources ) are used just pressed ctrl+alt+delete (for Windows ) and you will see.

Also depending on your operating system some resources of your pc could not be recognized. (something like old hardware new operating system cause that)

Hope this helps.

Go to Start, Run, and type dxdiag in the Run box and hit Enter. When that has finished running, click the tab for Display in that report panel. How much does it show for video memory? If you add the amount shown there to the amount of RAM shown in Properties for My Computer, do the two numbers add up to 256? 256 Mg of RAM is the bare minimum at todays standards...
RAM is dirt cheap now...add more.
Travel to Crucial's site and run the online scanner that will tell you what type to buy.Quote from: kakagee on July 03, 2010, 01:05:39 AM

XP has an excellent utility, "Task Manager", that will answer most of your questions.

Right click an OPEN spot on the Task Bar at the BOTTOM of your screen and choose "Task Manager"

Add more Ram: 256 is not enough.

start, run [ msconfig ]. Only load programs you need at startup ( save RAM ). Be very careful and not shutdown essential programs

Run your antivirus and all cleanup programs. Run CCleaner. Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Run sfc /scannowDo NOT use msconfig to manage startup programs -- it is STRICTLY a diagnostic utility. You can download and use a simple utility like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to perform that function (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml)

Solve : geforce gtx 550 ti graphics card fitting problem?

Answer»

ok so i just got a new graphics card for my computer the geforce gtx 550 ti and the metal part on the end circled in this picture seems to be blocking me from putting it into the slot but when i look at other graphic cards pictures they seem to have the same little THING sticking out so I'm wondering what should i do? oh and my computer is the acer aspire m5910

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]You could try removing the bracket of the graphics card and then see if it fits.
What I mean by "Bracket"

As you can see, a bracket is screwed onto the card with the small "bolts"-you can easily remove them with pliers.
EDIT-the bracket is used to support the gfx card too-I have had no experience with large, heavy graphics cards-the PCI-E connector may snap under its weight if the tower is PLACED upright without the bracket's support. Please exercise caution.that might work but is there anything i can use to help support it besides that? You could also use pliers to bend the LOWER end of the bracket back in such a way that it does not TOUCH the case...

I guess it would be possible to build something like this:
http://www.powercolor.com/Global/News.asp?id=1037
A unique solution from powercolor to help support extremely heavy graphics card so that your beloved PCI-E connector doesn't snap mid-game.oh i figured out what the problem was i didnt remove the bracket cover i didnt think about doing it first because it doesnt have removable bracket covers i had to bend and brake it off but it works now! but thanks

Solve : HP pavilion won't boot up?

Answer»

I have an HP pavilion dv 6000 with Vista. The system will not boot up to the operating system. I know the monitor works because I can use F8 to get into the BIOS. I tried using Linux puppy but it won't boot up either. Something I NOTICED is the touch pad(mouse) gets hot. On the bottom side of the laptop in the same location is the ram.Quote from: Little Marine on September 27, 2011, 02:36:20 PM

...Something I noticed is the touch pad(mouse) gets hot. On the bottom side of the laptop in the same location is the ram.
Inspect the RAM. Something is clearly wrong. What happened to cause this? Did you spill something on the keyboard?I have a old laptop that roasts pretty well around the Ram compartment, but runs normal. In the BIOS make sure the boot oder is set up for CD-Rom first, then Hard Drive. Then try to boot off of a bootable Linux CD or the original Windows Vista CD is you have it. If it still DOESNT boot, try removing 1 of the 2 Ram sticks if it has 2, and see if you get better results. Otherwise it could be a system board issue with drive controller, although rare. To test for bad drive controller, you can try to boot off of a bootable USB thumb drive if your laptop supports USB boot!

My Pentium 3 600Mhz Dell Laptop with 384MB Ram running XP Pro is a lap-warmer, but runs stable. It runs very warm center of the laptop by the Ram compartment even though the CPU is located in the upper right corner which also runs warm with the fan blowing almost constantly for running XP Pro on a system designed for Win 98/2000.There is a battery pack recall: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=1842155&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&task=&lang=en&cc=usI tried to boot from Linux puppy already with no results. This belongs to a friend of mind. It got hot at one time because they were using on there bed on a soft surface.Your story seems to have changed from the 1st post:
1. It's not your computer, it belongs to someone else.
2. It got hot 1 time, because the air vents were blocked.

I suspect your friend has not told you everything, so you are unable to give us a complete story. All we really know is that it won't boot to the OS or from a CD. Change boot order so CD is 1st, HP calls it "Notebook Upgrade Bay".
Yes my story did change. It wasn't meant to deceive anyone. I checked the boot order. It is the cd first. It will not boot from a Vista Cd. It has two ram sticks. I pulled those one at a time. It still has the same problem. I wonder if both sticks are bad. I have a bootable cd that does a memory check. It booted from that one. I am running a memory check now. The Vista CD is likely not a bootable CD or damaged in some way. Read the label on it very carefully, some are Restore CD's which require access through the BIOS. HP has changed the way they do this a number of times. ESC gets you to a BIOS menu or you can still go direct with F10, F2, etc. The latest BIOS don't look LIKE anything familiar. I can't even remember unless I'm sitting in front of it, except for this: They call the DVD/CD the "Notebook Upgrade Bay"? Also there is no delay, so it skips the screen where this is displayed. Finally found where it can be changed to 5sec, 10sec, etc. Once it was displayed for 5 sec, I guessed what it means. BTW,, BIOS screens are graphics, not text.I finally got the computer working. It wouldn't boot from linux puppy but I was able to install Ubunta 11.04.
Thanks for all the helpQuote from: DaveLembke on September 27, 2011, 02:59:12 PM

Dell can send you an adapter (4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-E), but that will not boost the power output of your power supply. The danger comes in when overloading a power supply, they can get very hot if they don't quickly burn themselves out.Patio, I'm usually pretty leary about buying cheap PC parts because I know that usually you get what you pay for. But it was on sale and I figured I would TRY it out ANYWAY. It's lasted me a couple months now and still going strong. Hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Sometimes you get a piece of junk, but sometimes you luck out. I'm not going to say I lucked out cause I know as soon as I do it'll crap out on me, but so far so good.

Solve : New Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 Problem??

Answer»

I am very new to using non-stock PCs and upgrading, so please bare with me.

First off, here is my set up (listing as much as I can because I don't know what all you NEED/want to see):

OS: Windows 7
Motherboard: M2N68-LA (Narra6)
Chipset: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
CPU Heatsink: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2
GPU: Raedon HD5750
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-400CX 400W
HD: 500 GB SATA 3G (3.0 Gb/sec) 7200 rpm

I recently ordered the CPU, GPU, and PSU and I updated my computer. The CPU's stock heatsink was running too hot (idling around 55-60C and getting up to the 68 area during intensive use) so I decided to order an aftermarket heatsink. I checked some reviews on here and ENDED up with my affordable Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2.

Last night after installing it the heatsink got down to the area I was hoping for. My CPU was running at a great core temp of 34C at the lowest and only 50 at load. I got home from work today, however, and my computer is idling at a pretty constant 45-47C and sometimes breaking 60 again at load. I shut it down for a BIT to see if that might have helped at all. I also opened it up and the fan is spinning fine.

Originally, I was worried that I had put the fan in incorrectly, but seeing its performance last night I thought that it must have been fine. The directions showed that I should have my RAM sticks on the right (if the fan is facing north, the RAM would be on the east). If I had put it in like that, though, the fan would just be facing down and be almost pressed up against the BOTTOM of my case. Instead, I put it in the opposite way so that the fan would be facing up the way both my original stock CPU and heatsink were set up and also the way my Phenom II X4 and its heatsink were set up. I'm not sure if I need to change the direction of the fan, but I wouldn't imagine that'd be the problem seeing as the temp was really cool and in the mid 30's last night with the same direction.

If you guys have any ideas or suggestions, that'd be great. Thanks.Welcome to the forums!

Those temps seem normal for that cooler on that chip.
The fan should be oriented blowing upwards, from bottom to top, with the fan on the bottom of the cooler. You can orient it with the fan facing up, blowing down, but you'd most likely see a few C difference.
The difference between your temps last night and today is most likely due to ambient temperature.

I know when installing a RAM, you should first (of COURSE) turn the computer off and unplug it before anything else to avoid damaging the MEMORY module or the socket.

What will specifically HAPPEN to the RAM if you forgot to unplug the computer?Probably nothing. As FAR as I know the RAM modules aren't powered whilst the computer is off.

Solve : Motherboard question?

Answer»

Hello

Just some advice, please.

I recently saw a blue spark at the back of my PC tower (it all happened so QUICKLY and I just saw it in the corner of my eye).

The PC now seems dead - as if no electricity is getting to it. Does that imply that the motherboard is dead. Is there a definitive test I can use, before I have to dispose of it?

Thanks

High1No, the motherboard is OK.
The spark came from the PSU, -right?

This is agues based on experience. The PUS has a glass fuse that gives off a blue spark when it fails. How can you tell the MBoard is fine ? ? ?Definitive test would obviously be to take a working PSU and components, plug them into the motherboard, and see if it boots.

A quick google search for "blue spark on motherboard" shows that people have experienced such sparks not just in the power supply... And even if it was the power supply that fried, it could have resulted in a momentary power surge that damaged the motherboard.Quote from: Transfusion on September 27, 2011, 07:52:26 PM

Citation requested. I have never hear of that. Ever. The PSU does not create power surges.
The following is FALSE.

The power supply's job is to provide several voltages to the motherboard and hard drives. These components don't have fuses or overvoltage protection beyond a normal line fluctation. Yes, much of the MB might be fried--but I expect that only the power interfaces. This means that the processor (the most expensive component) might still be okay. The hard drives might also be okay... but it's hard to tell.
Where do they get this stuff? Do any of these people read anything? We are talking about PSUs made in recent history, not the ones used by the Rolling Stones.I have personally fried an AMD 760G chipset motherboard before(forgot brand) with a faulty 350 W PSU that caused a single resistor to start smoking and emitting sparks(I know it was that single PSU as I had tried other PSUs before.) Other appliances plugged into the same power strip were unaffected.

A power surge from the mains could have resulted in damaged components.

I read the quote from Yahoo! Answers that you posted.
The processor also has voltage pins, to begin with... and it is a sensitive piece of electronic equipment. I have fried 2 MSI SATA DVD-ROM drives before. Again, the most definitive way is to plug the components into a working PC and test.Transfusion,
Thanks for hour input. I noticed that you are basing your remarks on actual experience. Good . So was I.

Here in the USA it is very rare for the line voltage to spike unless there is a major failure in the local distribution system. Like when a drunk smashes into a pole with 2500 volt line that FALLS into a 220 volt feeder. Not very often, but that would really fry your TV, PC and digital clock.

I have looked into other forums and never found a REAL answer to this question. Most of the answers were posted by individuals who had little experience and even less knowledge.

In any case, buying a new PSU is a sensible thing to do. The cost of a good PSU is often less than a new motherboard. And maybe the PSU is easier to trade with a friend. In China over here are frequent complaints of voltage dropping too low and fluctuations which cause your electronic equipment to frequently reboot-especially at 5:00-8:00 PM. We usually buy power supplies which support a large range of voltages, such as 90V-270 V. HuntKey is a reputable power supply manufacturer here. I have never had any problems with their units. Voltage stabilizers/regulators are a necessity in some places. If you have a bad power supply in the wrong place at the wrong time, God help you.Hello

Many thanks to you all for your considered replies.

At least it appears that it is not a motherboard problem.

I will remove the PSU and try it in another PC (if I can find one). If that PC doesn't work, I will know it is that.

Thanks again.

High1check your input voltage on the PSU (it is located at the back of the computer) and make sure it is set to the correct voltage.

Solve : Fan LED Replace/Move?

Answer»

I'm thinking about replacing the led lights of my fan because they came faulty as in one fan had 2 blue lights and for some reason the other two are purple.. So i was wondering what kind of LED lights do i need to replace them and i want to know too if i have to buy a certain kind of wire because I'm thinking about moving them away from the center of the fan. As shown in the attached picture The LED's are positioned in the center of the fan, but there are holes DESIGNED for the LED's to be attached to on the fan frame so i would need to have wires to extend the lights to the frame..
Budget is a factor.

Patio so your telling me this forum is not going to answer this or just isnt able to?
I'll give it a try. It's not as simple or practical as it appears to you. LED's are different in electrical & mechanical characteristics and in light output (color, lumens). You would have to know specs of what's in there now before you attempt to replace it. They're probably too small to have anything written on them. Besides, before you're done, this will cost more than a new fan. Also, is it really important what color it is? It's only a fan; spend your money wisely somewhere else.

Patio's link was provided so you can EDUCATE yourself. If you just want to experiment with LED's, that's a different matter.Computer_Commando's comments ring true. My Case has Blue LEDs in it for whatever reason- if I wanted them to be red (again, for whatever reason) I couldn't just rip out the red LED from my old cases or floppy drives- different coloured LEDs almost always have different electrical requirements- often just changing a led from one colour to another requires a resistor or two (or the removal of resistors already present), and in order to know what you need to add or remove you need to know the exact specifications of both LEDs and then you have to do some sort of math to come up with what you need to add or remove.ohh ok.. So based on your guy's ANSWERS if i do replace them I'll just end up spending more money and probably mess up the fan. (I do have some soldering experience though) Just last night i replaced the clicker of my trackball mourse from another mouse. So yeah ill just look for new LED fan's. Do you guys know a certain trusty website to order nice WORKING LED fan for cheap?

Solve : Online videos won't play smoothly! (Windows XP)?

Answer»

Hi,

I am having an issue with a lot of online videos not playing smoothly for me.
Sites like youtube work perfectly fine, but others like Dailymotion do not play well at all. Most if not all NSFW sites have the same issue. This happens with both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

I have ran a few scans with no issues found, and I have uninsalled/re-installed Adobe Flash as well with no luck.

Any assistance with resolving my issue would be greatly appreciated.Did it worked before and what does it mean not playing smoothly? Could you provide a link to test.I have windows 7 and videos online, like on facebook or some of the more obscure places won't play videos, they blink in and out, I can hear the sound. Even my own video that PLAYS off line I can't see on facebook though others can. I have checked with my Kaspesky security and it isn't that, I also checked with java script and I have the most up to DATE and didn't even have any old versions, also have auto update for windows so I know it's not that, helpEddia, Welcome to the CH forums. P.S. You might want to put yours in the Windows 7 forum or the software forum.Very sorry, will do thanksA few years back I was messing with a system I had bought for 10 dollars off of an auction site. It came with a low amout of RAM, and I believe a 1.5Ghz pentium 4 processor. I had it all updated it and was able to get online just fine, but many of my online videos would lag. I decided I would upgrade the RAM from 512MB to 1.5GB - the max for the board. I noticed right away that videos PLAYED much smoother online - still not perfect, but a lot better. I would question how much RAM and processor power you have. These days, you should at least have 2GB of RAM to get all your videos and web content working nicely.Quote from: Darthgumby on December 02, 2011, 07:35:07 AM

Solve : system is booting from the wrong disk?

Answer»

Hi
I have just built a new XP 32 system, and all works fine. What I thought I WOULD do to finish off was to connect my old system DISK ´´Seagate Barracuda 7200.7´´ to my new system just to be able to access the data files, and copy them over to the new set up. I have done this before without any grief. I know that the old XP OS is still on there, but I did not think it would boot from it without me TELLING the system to do so.
I thought things were suspicious when I checked the BIOS and it only seemed to see the IDE disk, which the seagate is. The seagate is connected to the MOBO through the IDE plug.
The other two disks, including the new system disk, are connected via the SATA ports on the MOBO. When the IDE disk is not connected the system boots from the new C system disk, when the seagate IDE disk is connected the system boots from it.
I´m sure I´m missing something really obvious, but its not obvious to me.
Can anyone give me some advice as what settings to adjust so I can just access the data on the seagate disk and stop my pc from BOOTING from the wrong disk? Just ran Belarc system audit, and for some reason my printer is being detected as a hard DRIVE! Does this mean things are well wrong?
MOBO Asus P5SD2-VM

Kwisj Printer is being detected as hard drive...

First, reset your CMOS, because your BIOS is evidently wonky and is not enumerating your USB devices properly.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdp_L5IxaNI

Next, set your desired boot order.
pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htmyou might have to change the little jumper on the hard drive to set it as slave

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Hi guys
Thanx for the replies. I did remove the jumper, as according to the seagate web site instructions, removal of it told the disk to act as a slave. Also the instructions on the disk said the same. This made no difference. In the BIOS, with the seagate plugged in the only disk that was detected was the seagate!
In the end I have just copied the data over my network to the new PC, from the old one. Which was no big deal. Obviously the problem arises from the fact that the seagate is an IDE (very old), and that when, previoulsy, i plugged an old system disk into a new set up, that disk was a SATA, and as I have read, the problem that I have been experiencing wont occur if all the disks are SATA. And as its now virtually impossible to buy an IDE disk, I should not have this problem again.
Take it easy

Some BIOS have an option to change IDE compatibility mode, Enhanced mode, SATA/IDE Native mode. thanx Jason I will have a look at that

Solve : HP 932c will not print?

I have an hp932c that worked fine until a paper jam locked it up. I removed the paper from the rear and now it will not print. The machine seems to be stuck. When I open the front panel the cartridges move to the replacement position to allow you to replace the cartridges. Once the cover is closed the machine cycles as if it is going to print. Then the machine gets stuck. It sounds like there is an obstruction on the ink cartridge carriage. Also I do not think the paper feed is working. If there is an ink pond, really, send it back to HP.Hi,

Ensure that the cables are properly connected; you need to ensure that your printer is properly connected, and plugged in, and also the cable is accurately connected to the computer as well.

Check the power; make sure that the printer’s power is switched on, ensure that all the computer necessary computer components are also turned on.

Make sure that the hardware is properly plugged in, and also turned on. Apply troubleshooting.

A troubleshooter is a tool, which is generated automatically and which can easily fix the problems that occur with your system.

Thus, if you are coming across DIFFERENT issues related to your printer, then you can consult the troubleshooter.

You require driver applications to run your hardware devices.

Make sure that the drivers are not outdated, corrupt, or incompatible, RESULTING in disrupting the communication between the printer and the computer.

Always make sure that you are making use of the most RECENT and latest device drivers, and also that are compatible with your system requirements and specifications, as this can be extremely USEFUL in resolving printer issues.Quote from: michelsmith on September 27, 2011, 04:43:00 AM

Solve : Usable OS on CD?

Answer»

I have a Laptop with a DEAD hard drive. Is there a way to boot to a CD with a fully funtional OS and install/run any programs off a external hard drive? No funds for a hard drive right now.

Thanks
JohnWell, you could use BartPE: http://nu2.nu/pebuilder to create a bootable CD that is meant for recovery and troubleshooting use. However, with a bit of tweaking, I'm SURE you could simulate a full-fledged Windows XP, with the one caveat that you will have to save all files to an external hard drive.

You could also use a Live CD of a Linux Distro, i.e. Ubuntu.

I had an external hard drive, I opened it, and I discovered it was merely an ENCLOSURE with a SATA drive inside. If your drive is out of warranty, you might want to do so.Hey Transfusion, I tried the BartPE and it works GREAT on 2 of my computers but not to well on my Laptop. I also tried Linux Mint which also worked Great on my other computers but not on my Laptop. Conclusion? Laptop no good anymore. I think the MB is toast. But, it's works great as a door stop.

Thanks
JohnJust wanted to state that with the ability to WRAP programs and applications now, making a Live Distro of Windows thru a custom Bart-PE is possible on whatever you can squeeze into a single 700MB or 4.7GB disc.

I saw on an episode of Hak5 recently a wrapper that allows you to run stuff that normally needs to be installed locally on the C drive to a thumb drive through a wrapper that allows for it to be added to a thumb drive and executed as a single stand alone EXE. That wrapper MEANS that you dont need to have registry keys on that local machine I suppose because the wrapper gives the app all of its registry hooks if I read it correctly through virtualization.

Making a TRUE Live version of Windows is illegal, so its advised not to do so! But it looks like its possible now with that wrapper.http://www.cameyo.com/ here is link to the software that might be able to make Bart-PE more functional
OK, pardon my inexperience. What's a wrapper?

Johnhttp://searchsoa.techtarget.com/definition/wrapper
DaveLembke, that is an excellent free alternative to Xenocode Virtual Studio, now known as Spoon Studio! I love it!

Solve : CDs & DVDs won't autoplay?

Answer»

CDs & DVDs on my computer used to autoplay when you put them in. However, none of them do any more. I have applied the advice elsewhere on this website but they still don't autoplay. Anyone any idea how to get them to play automatically? The PC is an HP machine with Windows XP Professional loaded.I'm not sure if this is some of the advice you have found elsewhere, but have you tried:
Microsoft Autoplay Repair Wizard http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=2648As suggested, have run the repair wizard and it said it had carried out the repair. Have also run TweakUI, as per instructions elsewhere on this website. Have associated file types with specific programs. All to no avail - CDs run when manually started but they still don't autoplay.Try AutoPlayConfig
AutoPlayConfig - Enable / Disable Autoplay on any Windows machine
http://www.typhoonsoftware.com/autoplayconfig.htm

Also, do this:
Start > Run > Services.msc
Maximize the services Window
Scroll down to: Removable Storage
Double click on it
Change the Startup type to Automatic
Start it
Scroll down to: Shell Hardware Detection
Double click on it
Change the Startup type to Automatic
Start it
Close Services Window

Start > in the Search box> gpedit.msc
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Autoplay Policies > Turn off Autoplay.
To Enable: Change the value of Turn off Autoplay to Disabled

Test Autoplay again ! (you may need to restart first)

This may also be a program conflict
Many programs such as disc imaging programs disable the autorun feature, or have it default to their program only (ie Nero, PowerISO, MagicISO)
If you have such programs installed, then you may need to go through the programs settings, or possibly even uninstall themI went onto the typhoonsoftware website and tried clicking on both the 'Download as EXE' and the 'Download as ZIP'
links but both just gave a screen advertising download movies, rather than actually downloading AutoPlayConfig.

I carried out the instructions relating to the Services Window.

However, when I searched on "gpedit.msc", the Search facility said "Nothing found in all locations for query "gpedit.msc".

Nero is installed. However, even DVDs containing a Nero compatible film don't autoplay. I can't see any settings
in Nero to change the autoplay config. I can't uninstall it, as Nero seems to be the only way we can burn videos to disc -
the camcorder's software seems to be faulty in that respect.

One thing that is puzzling me is that some references on this and other websites say that CDs will only autoplay if there is
an autorun.inf file in the root directory of the CD. However, my music CDs don't have this - they just have .cda files, yet
they all used to autorun. Should music CDs not be able to autoplay?

If I have to manually run CDs and DVDs, it's not the end of the World - just a bit of an inconvenience which, if necessary,
I can live with.

Your help is appreciated.

gpedit.msc is not available in XP Home edition, but should be present in XP Professional.

The usual way to run it is to go to the Start Menu, then the Run box, and type gpedit.msc and then click OK.

Can you verify that this does not work, and that this is your own not a work or school computer subject to restrictions put in place by a system administrator? (because frequently gpedit is disabled in such computers)

I would then do a VIRUS check as this is one reason for sudden loss of gpedit.

Apologies, I even tried their forum, but the program gave the same redirection even for me!

You may also try this one http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/cleanhandlers_2_4.zip

By the way, you don't have any programs installed that could have caused this autorun to stop? (discussed earlier)My machine runs Windows XP Professional. gpedit did run from the 'Run' box. However, under Computer Configuration > Administrative
Templates > Windows Components, there was no 'Autoplay policies'. My computer is my own home computer.

Regarding AutoplayConfig, your new link said "Sorry, you have reached your daily download limit.", even though I haven't downloaded anything from them!

I ran cleanhandlers.exe, pressed 'Scan and FIX invalid entries' and it ran.

However, CDs still don't autoplay.

Re. Nero, please see my comment in my last post above.
I use to love Nero, but it just go too big, and gave too many startups and extra services and it was too memory CONSUMING. I realized I was just generally burning data (Music, videos etc) and not creating some wonderful CD/DVD with all these other whistles and bells, so I decided to fully uninstall it, plus run the Nero removal tool (yes they even have a Nero clean tool for this huge program) And ended up downloading another program that does everything I want and its free!
Nero clean tool (used after you uninstall Nero) http://ftp6.nero.com/tools/Nero-CleanTool.zip
ImgBurn (Free CD/DVD Burning application) http://www.imgburn.com/
Since Nero is a bought product, you may want to decide for yourself, but I've never looked back personally.

Those autorun.inf files, do startup CD's (normally), but I'm more concerned with that Windows prompt that allows you to select what to do when a disc is inserted, ie Play with your media player (I use free VLC Media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) I understand, presently for you, both these prompts are not working. You don't need the INF file to get this Windows prompt, after a CD is inserted.

Regarding that download, I clicked on 'Free Download' as a general user, waited 45 secs, and it gave the download box and downloaded fine. Please try again.
I don't get any prompts from Windows asking me what to do when a CD or DVD is inserted.

The AutoPlayConfig link still gives "Sorry you have reached your daily download limit", even
after waiting a coupld of minutes. There was no 'free download' option.

I think I'll put up with the lack of autorunning if it is caused by Nero. I'm reluctant to
get rid of it, in view of us having great difficulty in burning to DVDs prior to getting it.

Thanks for your help.

Your question doesn't make much SENSE. You have 3 very different systems. How do you expect anyone to "rate" them?

Exactly what do you want from this discussion?
Same question hereThe first one is an older SYSTEM that has probably seen better days. The second one is a good system if you are LOOKING to do your web browsing, document creation, and general everyday computer tasks that do not require a lot of power. Third one sounds like a nice modern laptop that you should use for your everyday tasks as well as taking to your school/place of work if needed.

1: I'd rate as a 1 or 2 out of 10
2: Probably a 4 out of 10
3: I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10What is the point in this?

Solve : Need advice rebuilding a HP?

I am upgrading a HP with some new hardware (for Battlefield 3) and could use some input. I have upgraded a video card, RAM and hdd before but that is it. I am planning to buy EVERYTHING from newegg and nearest computer store is an hour and a half away so I want to get this right the first time.

Here is my current system:

I think I have everything picked out correctly for the upgrade, but I just wanted some feedback from people who have done this in the past before I make the purchase. The only thing I am not sure about is the current F_PANEL connection seems to have less pins than the new board. Is that a problem?

Should I switch out one part at a time and if so what order would you recommend? Also, I will be upgrading from windows vista 32 to windows 7 64, should I do that upgrade before or after installing the new motherboard?

Thanks in advance for the advice.
I'd say you are all set-the front panel having less pins will definitely not be a problem. Thanks for taking a look.

I did think of one more question though. My monitor only GOES to 1360 x 768 so would the video card I picked be overkill. The Radeon HD 6770 is quite a bit less so would the improvement be worth the $100 difference at that resolution.Any reason for selecting a micro-ATX board ? ?Quote from: patio on September 26, 2011, 12:41:38 PM

Any reason for selecting a micro-ATX board ? ?

From what I have been reading a full size ATX will not fit in the case.HP did not show case specs on your link...My case can't fit more than 4 expansion slots so I am pretty sure it is micro. I am trying to keep the cost down as much as I can so I don't want to switch the case if I don't have to. Plus my wife is stingy on letting my buy new computers so this is a bit of a stealth upgrade. i find cases on tree lawns every Sunday nite...some are pretty nice and servicable...Quote from: lexluker on September 26, 2011, 12:59:58 PM

Where do you live? I live on the 20th floor in an apartment-there is a large trash can outside in which I once found a Tl-WN322G+ WiFi card that I still use daily, an external Samsung USB HDD 320 GB that had a faulty enclosure. The drive worked (and still works) fine, and 2 GB of SO-DIMM DDR2 RAM that turned out fine with Memtest86+. Nothing even close to computer cases.

I managed to convince my mother that open-air computers have a smaller footprint and that open-air lengthens the lifespan of the computer due to lower temperatures.

Solve : western digital external hd not responding?

Answer»

Hello everyone, I was wondering if there is any way to retrieve data I stored on my 500gb external western digital hard drive? When I went to transfer some files from my external wd hd to my cpu the wd hd started to beep and make a clicking noise. I was able to get about 30 gbs of stuff before it went kaput and still had about 200 gbs of cool stuff I dont want to lose. When I connect the wd hd to my cpu it starts to run autoplay but shows nothing when it used to go though all my files. I got a redundancy error and it asks me to format. Is there anyway to get my stuff back? It has a LOT of stuff that I would like to get back. Thank you.Data recovery service...clicking HDD = Clik of Death. If you EVER used Linux or have a friend that knows Linux, you can try connecting the HDD to that OS and pray you can recover your data. It will detect it as a storage unit which should allow you to access the entire drive and partition(s).

Other than that, I agree with patio.

Good luck!Your 500 gb external western digital hard drive is corrupted so that it prompts to format, now if you need your data then you have to go for a data recovery software, i will suggest you to use "Kernel for FAT and NTFS" hard disk data recovery software for the recovery of your stuff data and files from your hard drive. It is an efficient data recovery software which has a user friendly interface and has a unique feature that it preview the lost data in RED color in scanning of your drive, it gave you the choice to save all at once or some selective files to your location.Quote from: patio on September 06, 2011, 07:24:55 PM

...clicking HDD = Clik of Death...
Not always. I had a new notebook drive in a 3rd party external USB case, Clik of Death. Was also using an external power adapter, even when none is needed. Removed the drive from the case, installed in desktop, tested with manufacturer's diagnostics, everything OK. Reformatted, no more problems. This has happened on more than one drive, no clear reason why.Sometimes a clicking portable HD means not getting enough USB power. The flickering light will show a faint green color. I borrowed one from a friend here where his portable drive works on all PCs but not on my 7 year old PC. Makes that clicking SOUND, flickering light. Sometimes its the USB cables as when I've tried using a quality cable connector, the problem is history, atleast in my case.Quote from: jason2074 on September 09, 2011, 01:17:21 AM

You sometimes need a cable like this:
http://www.dragonsteelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3753&Itemid=38

Try using http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Testdisk - helps recover lost partitions and data caused by unplugging the drive/power supply to the drive removed when transferring data.
Most reliable USB dual/data cable so far, for me.Thank you for the info everyone. I haven't had the time to try all the suggestions given but I am starting them today. 1) Kernel had some bad reviews. 2) I don't know anyone on Linox. 3) I don't BELIEVE i have the technical knowledge to make the external hd an internal. 4) Trying testdisk atm. 5) Ordering USB 2.0 USB Extension Cable with extra Power inlet. I am hoping testdisk and or the usb extension cable will solve my problem. if NEITHER of these work perhaps ill ask some follow up questions about Linox and installing the external to my pc. Thank you again.

Solve : Win7 Install not recognizing SATA HDD?

Answer»

Computer is about 3 years OLD. Emachine ET1831-03. Windows 7 Home Premium. Hard drive is ST3750630AS. Motherboard after a week of searching around to find out exactly what it was -
NVIDIA® GeForce® 7050 / NVIDIA nForce® 610i motherboard GPU support FSB1333 and DDR2 667
GF7050VT-M5 motherboard is based on the NVDIA GeForce7050 and 610i chipsets. Will provide more info if needed.

Ok, to start with this PC has never been able to do windows updates since day 1. Doing windows updates froze the computer for hours upon hours causing me to force shut down. Upon doing so errors would happen and I would have to Last Known or Sys Restore to an early point in time. I eventually shut off windows automatic updates.

About 2 months ago I restarted and the computer CAME back at me with a Boot/BCD problem.
Windows failed to start. A recent Hardware or Software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert Windows installation disc and restart computer.
2. Choose language and click "Next".
3. Click "Repair your computer".

If you do not have the disc, contact your system adminstrator or computer mamnufacturer for assistance.
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: Error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

Safe mode, Last Known & Restore no longer worked. Didn't have any repair discs or install discs so I emailed the manufacturer to find some help. They had me Alt-F10 and do a complete wipe & restore. This worked! Got me to my desktop everything started to update itself, after updating it restarted to apply updates. Once again Boot/BCD. Did this Alt-F10 a few more times, over and over after restart I got Boot/BCD. Alt-F10 no longer works either.

I have aquired Windows 7 installation disc. Put it in, custom install & it tells me no drives are available & to load/install driver. I have checked BIOS & the hard drive is showing in there. I've downloaded Mobo drivers & downloaded the HD driver files trying to get it to recognize. Finally have a file it sees, hit the next button to install it & it tells me it's an unsigned driver & it won't download cause it could cause problems. I have searched forums & see that other people have had this problem with installing windows & it doesn't recognize the SATA HD. None of them I've found has helped my problem. Tried switching ACHI/RAID/IDE in BIOS. Tried installing WinXP instead to at least get an OS on the HDD so Win7 has SOMETHING to play off of. Have not tried the hard drive in another system as of yet.

So I'm now lost at what to do next. Is this hard drive junk? Am I not FINDING the right drivers? Is there other options I haven't tried? Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's been 2 months now & I'm ready to throw the thing out the window! Just wanted to update this incase anyone might have something similar happen. I gave in an bought a new hard drive and windows 7 installed fine and PC is up and running.

Solve : Replacing LCD Screen?

Answer»

Hello!

I am fairly experienced with computers and have reformatted numerous LAPTOPS and desktops, but I have never had to deal with a cracked screen before. My parents have a Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop with a 15.4" WXGA LCD Screen with a CCFL Single Bulb backlight. I am hoping to be able to fix their COMPUTER for them but am wondering about the compatibility of laptop screens.

Do I have to purchase one that is specifically made for this brand and model of computer or can I purchase any LCD with comparable specs?

THANK you for your assistance!I found a nice step-by-step video tutorial on replacing the screen:

Solve : Need help Build a New System?

Answer»

I am putting together a desktop first time & need help.

I am looking for a Motherboard with minimum of 4 PCIe x16 slots & should would work with Intel I-7 2600K Processor.

As long as all 4 slots run at minimum 8X speed is fine.

Also need suggestions for a GOOD Brand RAM + PSU & Case.

Budget is Flexible & need Reliable system.

Thankshttp://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3646#sp

the above link seems to have what you requested 4 PCIex16 2 at 16x speed and 2 at 8x, with an LGA1155 (Intel i7 2600k)

While people have different opinions on RAM, my friend purchased corsair and he RECIEVES a lifetime gaurantee.

I haven't replaced many PSU or cases so I can't comment on them.I have had a few Kingston sticks fail on me overnight, so it is not exactly the most reliable brand of RAM.
If you are looking to build a high-end system with that motherboard and processor, I would suggest some high-end RAM by Crucial Ballistix, G.Skill Ripjaws, Corsair Vengeance/XMS2, PNY XLR, Patriot Gamer 2, and Mushkin Enhanced. G.Skill Ripjaws 4GB is now selling for $29.99 on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

You probably want to ADD a graphics card too, maybe even in an SLI or CF CONFIGURATION, so I would get a 1000W PSU.
Here is a list of the brands you should and should not buy:
http://www.10stripe.com/featured/psu/brand.php
If there are reviews available online for the product, MAKE sure to read them-there is nothing like first-hand customer input.

As for the chassis, you might want to look at some of the featured ones on Anandtech:

COMPLETELY forgot about that. Didn't occur to me that a 3 year old laptop would NEED a CMOS battery. If that doesn't work, the battery socket may have been damaged in some way, and the damage is causing a short, corrupting the CMOS every time you power down.

Does it also occur if you it restart the laptop?

Solve : Capture Card?

Answer»

Im currently looking AROUND for a good capture card that i can use to capture gameplay on both my PC as WELL as XBOX. I have no clue what to look for or who makes them the best. If anyone has an idea or PREFERENCE on what i should be looking for as well as the best place(price wise) that i should be shopping at id be much obliged. As far as what i want id like something that can record in HD from my DVI computer screen as well as my either HDMI or HD "BLUE, green, red" xbox WHILE I PLAY. again any information would be much appreciated!Me too!
Looking around it is hard to GET something that really works good with high definition and a decent frame rate. Cards that go into your machine or feed off your USB port use your CPU for the grunt work. That sucks performance from your system.

The alternative is an external DVR that has its own power supply, CPU and memory. It takes the signal from your computers extra DVI port. Using composite or S-video is a real loser.
It has to be RGB or DVI to be any good.

IMHO, go for an external Digital Video Recorder if you can. I am using a Composite to VGA converter for my Original Xbox:

I guess if you paired the above device with one of these: http://www.vgacapture.com/ you could record your Xbox output on your computer.

Solve : updating bios?

Answer»

hi i just wanna ask how to UPDATE bios? You don't need to update your BIOS if there are no hardware compatibility issues with your computer. You should go to your MANUFACTURER's site-usually they will provide a BIOS FLASHING program with INSTRUCTIONS-I have accidentally bricked a motherboard while using a third party flashing tool. If you do not know the exact procedures for recovery of a bricked motherboard I suggest you do not attempt to flash your BIOS.Go to the website of your computer or motherboard manufacturer and if there is a bios update you can download it along with the instructions for installing.

Solve : Choosing a new Graphics card?

Answer»

I've had this hd 5670 1 gig for a while now and would like to get a slightly better one.
This particular graphics card has been very bothersome. Not being able to update the DRIVERS to anything later than about a year ago being the most annoying.
So I've finally hit that point where being unable to update my drivers has hindered me a bit. (Assassin's CREED Revelations missing texture bug of sorts said to have been fixed in the LATEST driver)

I'm just looking for any advice on choosing a new one. I was thinking of just getting something along the lines of the 5700-5900 series even if it only improves performance slightly.

Asus M2N-E : Motherboard
HD 5670 radeon 1 gig : Graphics Card
athlon ii x4 955 be : CPU
4 gigs of ram
120 gig harddrive + 2 externals (1 tb & 750 gig)
Windows XP Sp3
600 watt : PSUYou might want to consider the Radeon HD 6850, which currently has the best price/performance ratio of the high-end cards and costs $144 on Newegg. It only requires 1 PCI-E power connector and a 500W PSU.

The Radeon HD 6870s can be had for as little as $20 more than the HD 6850s:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100006662&isNodeId=1&Description=Radeon+HD+6850&x=0&y=0
HD 6850

HD 6870

FYI it is a huge leap going from the HD 5670 to the 6850:
http://www.hwcompare.com/5905/radeon-hd-5670-vs-radeon-hd-6850/Ah well that does look like a fine card. Just one last question: Any particular brand you'd suggest for the card itself? My 5670 was an xfx and seemed to run alright.
Is there a certain brand that's known to produce higher quality cards or is it more about just personal preference?

THANKS for the help didn't quite expect that much from one response.Ok I'll probably end up buying:

If the "old monitor" shows a blank display then my next question is 'what changes have you made to your graphics card setings since the old monitor performed correctly'?

Since I tried to test the problem with the old monitor as I said it went blank. Then I tested it with my old comp and it was still blank.I tried PUSHING the power button repedetly but thats when I realised its dead...It was 4 years old,17 inch SYNC master.

Your old monitor (17 in sync master) is dead, but you are having this split screen issue with your new monitor, correct?
Are you using graphics control software such as ATI Catalyst Control? (The version of ATI Catalyst Control for my Radeon X1250 is displayed in the attatchment below).

Solve : hp keyboards?

Answer»

will the back-lit keyboard from a HP envy WORK in a hp dv7t laptop ?/Well, each laptop has its own keyboard dimensions, so the ENVY keyboard probably wouldn't physically fit in. The keyboard connector to the motherboard may differ with manufacturers-I only have had keyboard EXPERIENCE with the BenQ Joybook Series-all the keyboard connectors were the same, but they were different from HP laptops. If you are courageous enough to attempt doing so without fear of voiding your WARRANTY, try.

Solve : Could too hot motherboard explain all this??

Answer»

Thank you for making this awesome forum available!

My shortcuts no longer worked, neither did the controls inside my software programs such as Firefox, Word and Outlook Express. I was using Speed Fan to run the CPU fan at 50-percent to keep the computer from being so noisy. I understand that computers can run hotter without experiencing damage. That worked well for a couple of years. When I started experiencing the onset of some of these issues, I freed up some hard drive space, checked for viruses (found one and removed it), and set Speed Fan to allow the CPU fan to run at 100-percent again. Now, it seems that my computer's capabilities are coming back as the CPU (and ultimately the MB) run cooler.

I want to TAKE a three-pronged approach to ensuring all is well now.

1. Could a too hot CPU/MB alone be the cause of all this? If not, what else should I check or do?
2. Is it possible that when the MB cools all the way back down under its threshold and STAYS there that all these problems will be permanently resolved?
3. How do I best test the MB to see that all is well, no permanent damage? Using what software tools?

I look forward to reading your responses. There are many variables that can create issues as to why a computer or it's components do not function (or not optimally). Therefore there really is not one test that will do it all.But there are tests (often available free) that can test individual hardware/software functionality. In your case because you decided to arbitrarily alter the performance of the cooling fans it is possible (but not a certainty) that there could be a cumulative effect occurring over time that has been detrimental to your computer. Understandably that seems to be the primary area of your current concern. So here is a link to a site that offers advice and a tool for testing that.

If it turns out that the tests do not indicate a problem but that you are still of the opinion that your system is not working as it used to or not as well as you desire then there are many other tests and/or hardware/software/and tuneup options that are also available to you. For other forum members to comment with greater preciseness it could be helpful to elaborate on your computer. A good start would be to do an Everest scan to determine all the hardware components of your computer. Everest free scan is available. Posting your scan results would give us more information to assess the likely performance of your computer in a variety of areas. truenorthHere is the report you requested, attached. I will try the steps at the link. My MB temp is 49-degrees Celsius with fans running at full capacity.

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]I have reviewed most of your attached report. It would appear that you are using windows xp and your computer is at least a 2006. I do not see a reference to what actual service pack on your O/S is installed. Do you have SP 3 installed. I note that you have a great deal of available ports (both internal and external) that don't seem to have anything connected to them so i don't thing any slowness or heat issue is being generated by high hardware demands. I do note that your AVG ANTI virus seems to be generating some errors when it is being accessed. How current is it? You may wish to try another free virus service such as Avira or Avast if AVG is causing issues. I note that all the references to temps are in the mid or upper 40's RANGE (i don't know if those temps are at idle or at stress). Other members may wish to comment on those temps. I assume that your computer is clean and not full of dust and that your fan ports are not obstructed.
On this question from your original post"2. Is it possible that when the MB cools all the way back down under its threshold and stays there that all these problems will be permanently resolved?" This is difficult to know as if something has suffered as a result of your reduction to the fan speeds for whatever the period was then that won't resolve itself. However i don't believe that that is currently established that any damage did occur. Do you have any memory as to what your temps were prior to your lowering the fan speeds? How is the speed of things now that you have returned the fans to 100%? I notice that you were having some program issues before that seem to have gone. Do you have slow startup issues or other slow processes that were not there from the time of before the fan speed reduction? How much resources are used by the quantity of startup programs? When you do get the results of your temp assesment let us know the results and we can go from there.truenorthThe PC is running SP 3. I am not running AVG. This is Avera AntiVir. I haven't NOTICED any issues with it. It is up to date. Temps at idle are 49-degrees Celsius for the system with the system fan doing 2,220 RPM at 100-percent, and 46-degrees Celsius for the CPU with the fan doing 3,924 RPM at 100-percent. The CPU threshold is 65-degrees Celsius, while the MB threshold is 45-degrees Celsius. The MB is still running above its threshold at about 48 to 49 degrees C. Is this all the temperature information you need?

I cleaned out the computer after a fan hiccuped and barely turned all the way on at boot up one time. The fan came on OK after that. Speed Fan has been running the CPU fan at 50-percent for a year or two. I don't recall my temps before lowering the speeds. Everything seems to be OK except that I cannot boot into BIOS setup at all and I cannot boot from the CD DVD drive at all.

With only the eight startup programs running, and other normal idle processes, the CPU runs between 0 and 46-percent and the RAM at about 900MB of the 2GB total that is available.

What do you think at this point? What are my next steps?Have you considered this may be a Windows issue ? ?Yes, I used a ps2 keyboard Android got into the bios Android changed the boot order. I am now rerunning windows setup from a reliable slipstreamed cd with xp Android most of my favorite settings. I did find in the bios that the temps are a little higher than I thought.Android is supposed to be and
