Solve : Windows XP/Hardware problem?

Answer»

Hi all,

a friend SPILLED diluting juice into a Packard Bell laptop.  The machine still "works" - ie, can load WINDOWS XP but only log in as a Guest.

The problem is that the KEYBOARD is almost completely ruined.  I can't start it in Safe Mode and can't get it to change the boot sequence to force it to boot from a CD.

Any suggestions.

thanks in advance

Never give your friend laptop again...

Laptop...hmm.. Call the service.
See if you can at LEAST get your hands on the same laptop model and   have the hard drive installed to it. have your data backed up from it then ya gunna probably need a new laptop unless your local repair shop can fix it. Actually first thing to try is a USB keyboard and mouse plugged into it.Bad idea to spill stuff into laptops.

USB peripherals are your only solution it seems. Let us know how it turns out.

Solve : Firewall or Internet Options??

Answer»

hi, I am having trouble with some of the programs on my computer and am hoping that someone can help me out.  For some reason, I can't open Limewire on my computer.   When I click on the icon, it shows the hour glass for a second and then it's LIKE I never even pushed it.  I have also always used trend micro's online scan for my computer periodically.  Ever since I rebuilt my computer, I have not been able to do so.  If I go to the site, when I try and start the scan, it just crashes my internet.  I have looked to see what it is that is causing these problems (including turning off my windows firewall and lowering the restriction rate on my internet options) and can not find a solution.  Anyone ever have this problem or heard anything like it?Who can tell???  A kind description of the info you give is "sparse"!!!

Why have you not said what your pc consists of, what OS you are using, do you have a third party Firewall installed, what AV you use, which browser  etc etc???

Here is a Limewire discussion on firewalls.  Other Limewire sites may be of more help..

Good luck. stimp.......  Based on what you have said and have not said ........ It sounds like you have viruses in residence ........ I'm just a bit curious as to why you would be online with no anti virus ...... and Quote

Please advise more info on your system .......... do you have a floppy drive ?

You betcha ......its called malware ......nasties ....viruses ...trojans

dl65  Where did you obtain LimeWire? Not that virus ridden viper pit known as download.com I hope?
With the level of security that you seem to exhibit, you're probably well and truly owned by now.

At the very minimum, adequate firewall protection must be installed before even considering connecting to a public network. The pathetic XP offering doesn't count!

Before using P2P applications, it's essential that you are fully equipped to deal with any eventualities. A solid, properly implemented and maintained firewall is absolutely essential as is having effective AV, anti trojan and other anti malware solutions in place.

If you're downloading or distrubuting copyrighted etc MATERIAL, other considerations should be met as well.lol..jesus, I feel like everyone just slapped me in the face (j/k)...after I made the post my BUDDY hooked me up with a 3rd party anti virus package that he said is great, I am not at my HOUSE right now but I think it is called NOD32 or something.  We ran a full system scan and found no viruses.  After I tried to access Limewire again (which by the way, I got from download.com), I was still unable to get a result.  He had me download a Tune Up for windows and it fixed 131 problems that I had on windows.  Still, I was unable to go to some websites and/or get on Limewire.  I run windows xp pro, have a lanparty nf4 motherboard, amd athlon 64 san diego processor and my harddrive came out of a dell 6700c computer.  Excuse me if this is still not enough info for you all to help me, I am not the most computer oriented person, only started playing with these things about 8 months ago...figure eventually I will know the ins and outs but for now I am stuck asking for others help.   maybe you have to install java form http://java.sun.com/

to install limewire correctly

OK , Bye
Reinstall the problem program, what is limewire anyway, do you need it?
Trend online scan has stopped working for me too, I think it has to do with the java & activex requirements and I figured if they want to make life so hard I'd just move on to somewhere else.

Eg when I clicked download on this page , it automatically downloaded spalambsetup.svm file.
Are you sure you are doing everythign right? Which browser are you USING? I am using FireFox I am using internet explorer, When i click to download i get an html page that comes up showing all setting in text for the game, in this case GTR racing game. I have just installed firefox and it WORKS with that. Thanks but do you know why IE wouldnt do it right.right click -> save as -> (look at the bottom and select all files) -> ok then it should be saved as .svm extension hope this helps

At download now instead of left clicking the files you right click to save it to your prefer destination...

It opens as a text or web browser containing numbers that dont make sense is because those are the code of the car.. I should know I use to tweak cars in a old game called Midotwn MADNESS    CREATED a 1000mph car with no damage... its fun in the beggining but it kills all the fun later.. just make sure you save it to the right directory. Thanks alot it worked. Can you Explain more ?

Solve : Laptop mouse stuck?

Answer»

Hello again!  I am still using the Acer laptop PC as before [Aspire 5002WLMi].  My problem may be universal in the laptop world, which I hope is the case.

Now then, the touchpad is stuck in "left click mode" as I call it.  Anytime that I try to select one person on "AIM" for instance, it highlights the name instead of right-click to open their menu options.  Another example, when in a page with Java-based message boards [MSN's group boards] it wouldn't allow the Java to open the reply WINDOW (as from my experience, Java doesn't let you use the "open in a new window" option).

I've temporarily fixed the problem by TRYING to select text on this message, and so far it seems fixed.  My question is:  how did the touchpad get that way?  Is there a shortcut that I accidentally activated?  How can I avoid this from happening again? Is the Synaptics SOFTWARE installed and PROPERLY set up? I usually disable the SCROLL and click functions as I find them dangerous.

Solve : Windows XP startup problem?

Answer»

Hi all, FIRST time post. Looking for some advice, when i start up my laptop (HP pav ze5300) it seems to be working properly until it comes to the username/icon screen, there it says the normal click on your user name to start but on the RIGHT hand side there are no icons or names to click on (just blue!). In that screen i can only click on the shut down option, ive PRESSED ctrlaltdel but since ive never had a password i cant logon through that either. Ive also tried using safemode and my last good setting to enter but it always stops at the username/icon screen. Im pretty sure this is a fairly serious problem which will probably endup with me having to reinstall windows xp but any help would be really really really appreciated as i dont want to lose all my documents.

Cheers
TomDo you have the XP disk? If so you can try running the recovery from the disk. First, can you boot to safe mode? Try while loading hit F12 or F8 and choose safe mode. While in safe mode run your system restore and set it to a date you know was good.
If that doesnt work put in your Windows XP disk and resart the computer and restart booting through CD rom.
The windows set up will start. You can now use the recovery console, but I wouldnt bother, instead go ahead and on the first screen say you are installing xp (dont worry you wont erase anything yet) when you do this it searches you hard drive for previous windows versions, it will tell you it found it.  Here is where you are giving the option to repair it or replace it. Repair it.  That should help.  But first try the safe mode and Recovery.
Make sure you have your reg key before you try the re-lay.

let me know
Cheers mate, the safe mode does load up but freezes at the same screen so i dont think i can get system restore to run at all, ive tried ctrlaltdel in safe mode as well thinking it might open task manager but no joy. Im getting my windows disc this wekend so ill let you know how i get on. Im gonna try and repair it, fingers crossed.
If all else fails and i have to relay is thre any chance my old files will be stored (i thought maybe in a "files from old computer" FOLDER somewhere in windows folder), ive heard that it will keep some but will erase "my documents". Where do i find the reg key by the way? Will it be on my windows cd package or in my hp handbook or SOMETHING? Ill have a look for that too, pretty sure ive seen it somewhere.

Thanks for the adviceThis may be of some help to you, good luck with it.
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/part1.htmThanks, ill have a look for sure. Anything even vaguely resembling a life line is pounced on immediately!Sorry for being thick, i dont know what a KNOPPIX CD is. Should i have one? Ah ok, ive just had a look at the knoppix site, ill try and dl that next week too. Sounds pretty complicated though.Once you burn the ISO file to a CD it is as complicated as loading the CD and restarting the computer. You can do that, can't you?  If that doesnt work put in your Windows XP disk and resart the computer and restart booting through CD rom.

Ive just done this and it works perfectly and seems to reload everything as you would expect. Then it restarts windows xp and sticks at exactly the same screen. Not very funny.

Im thinking now of doing the knoppix,

Solve : Xp Defrag?

Answer»

My windows xp defrag is no longer on my system, after installing and uninstalling Diskeeper.
It seems as Diskeeper uninstalled the defrag program that comes with XP. Any one KNOW where to download the files needed for XP defrag :-?So you don't see Defragment Now button under Tools tab? Or...? On the other hand Diskeeper does this for you. Probably it caused. Why you need again XP Defragmenter?if it doesn't EXIST anymore, try system restore and RESET to the date before installing diskeeperThe files for XP defrag are there but when clicking on the .msc file I get the same...
The defrag console with a browser window that says "page can not be displayed."
I've tried system restore, doesn't work. I've tried going back to different restore points before diskeeper and It says my system cannot be restored.
Any other suggestions? :-/Yes I have ran online antivirus scan, used pc-cillin, system ok.
What is sfc/scannow? How will this recover or fix XP defrag?Had the same PROBLEM.  UnInstalled Diskeeper and XP Defrag returned.  Magic maybe...j Quote

No magic...Diskeeper is for defragmentation and so doesn't like rivalry so takes away system defrag. I still confused why one need diskeeper and Win Defrag simultaneously?

That's not really this issue, is it?  Of course, one does not normally does not need two disk defrag utilities.  But, for most non-MS defrag utilities, I'm quite sure installing them would not make the Windows Defrag disappear.  Windows Disk Defragmenter would still appear in the PROGRAMS menu, but the user would simply use the other defragmenter they had installed if that was their preference.  Windows Disk Defragmenter can not be uninstalled via any normal procedure.  There's no option to uninstall it via Add or Remove Program, Add/Remove Windows Components.

Well actually this goes back to Microsoft and Windows95. When it was installed on an exiting DOS system it renamed the DOS defrag to something else, thus rendering it unusable because it was harmful to the Long File Names, among other things. I am not surprised AT ALL that Diskeeper does this, and it does not set a precedent.
Hi,

try this.

right click my computer and select manage

then where it says storage click disk defragmenter

does that help?

thanks

paulI'm not sure about Diskeeper deleting Defrag but I wouldn't think it does. It's far more likely to place severe restrictions on it somehow. It might be interesting to run FileMon and RegMon while installing/uninstalling Diskeeper.

Personally, I use O&ODefrag Pro when I eventually get around to it. I find VoptXP very good too.

Solve : I can't access my files after system recovery.?

Answer»

Hello, recently, a file on my computer named "hay.dll" was corrupted so
I couldn't even log onto my account. I did a system recovery and now
everything works and all my files were saved. The problem is, I had a
password on my old account and that account isn't on the log in screen
anymore. There's just the DEFAULT account called "compaq_owner". I tried
going to documents and settings and I found my old account in that
folder, but I can't go inside it. I get a pop up window saying "folder is
not ACCESSIBLE" because it's password protected I'm guessing.

So I tried doing everything I could think of to open up that folder
(checking out the properties, going into safe mode, etc.) but I still
can't find a way. I know my password of course, I just can't find a way to
enter it so I can access the folder.

Do you know a way for me to retrieve my old files? Thanks.Does your old login name, the one which you cannot enter appear on the login screen?

FlameNope, there's only the default "compaq_owner" account on the login screen now. My old account appears in the documents and settings folder though, but like I said, it's not accessible. Man... If only I could find a way to throw my old account back onto the login screen so I can enter the password there and access it. I already tried making a new user account using the exact same name as the old "locked" account, but it just MADE a regular new account. What was weird though was after I made the new account with the same name, I looked at the login screen and it even automatically put the same icon I had on my old account

Blah, it's all confusing. MAYBE I can do something with the properties? The one circled in red is the properties I get when I'm in safe mode.

Have you tried undoing the restoration?

FlameHow do I undo the restoration and what does that exactally do? Will everything be the way it was again before that .dll file corrupted? Thanks. You need to take ownership of the folder(s)/file(s).

Don't forget about safe mode if you USE XP Home.

Solve : XP Desktop?

I have windows Xp on my machine and wondered if there is any way to LOCK the desktop icons so that they cannot be moved. I tried to do it via the registry and change it so that on restart the icons are all placed back the way i want them but that DIDNT work either. I know there is software that you can download to do this kind of thing but wondered if there is a simple way through windows or tweak manager???found a windows tweak that fixed my problem. What is it? The tweaks I've seen don't seem to last more than a couple of reboots and seem to introduce unwanted EFFECTS such as context menu garbling.its tweak 188 on this site
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm it has .dll file that goes into the system32 folder and a script that you run after the dll file is in the right place. once youve done this you can right click on the desktop once it is ARRANGED how you want it and save the settings. anytime you want to revert back to these settings from then on you simply right click on the desktop and choose restore desktop icon LAYOUT. its very effective and hasnt caused me any problems so far.

Solve : cd-rom data loading problem?

Answer»

For some reason only in windows XP. When im playing win 95/98 based games that read MUSIC TRACKS and other data off the CD while you play, on windows XP no data is read at all from the CD when I play them.  This frustrates the *&! OUT OF ME.  there must be a way to fix this problem WITHOUT having to USE win 95/98 to get the *censored* game to load music data from the CD. Can someone please help me with this problem.  THANKSOne thingyou can try is to locate the .exe file for the game you are running, rite clik it and under Properties select Compatibility Mode and select Win 98...

patio.*censored*!!!! good one, but unfortunately I already tried that im sorry.  I dont understand why it does this.  And ive even tried  copying the music track data files from the CD into the game directory on the Hard Drive, but no luck.  There must be a reason why this is happening only on WIn XP.  Ive noticed they dont make games that run music tracks on the CD anymore.  BUT AGAIN WHY!!!! anyway thanks for your reply, and attempt to fix my problem.  If any other solution comes to MIND, please please dont hesitate to post it here!!! thanksI've never tried it as a games emulator as such but I use VMware Workstation quite extensively. I'll dig out some DOS games when I've got time perhaps.
There was a purpose built DOS emulator called DOSBoxFro or similar about at one time that was supposed to have been pretty successful in achieving DOS based gaming under XP.
The problem is that XP doesn't address the hardware directly while DOS did.

If this gaming is really important to you, consider a dual boot system with a DOS partition large enough for your games, drivers and a good memory configurator etc.ok   for your info these arent dos games.  These are win 95/98 based CD-ROM games.  But thanks for the LINK.  I am going to check out this software Vmware workstation.   But before I do,  I have  A BIG QUESTION.  WILL it OR WILL IT NOT alow me to USE win   98 or 95 on My PC thats running XP..  in other words,  will it ALLOW me to have and use multiple OS's on the same machine?  if the answer is yes, then thank you.    But let me explain that I was trying to avoid having to use a software like this in the first place!!   dam it there must be a way to not have to GO through all that trouble just so that the cpu can load the cd-rom for the music tracks when i play!!!.   oh and before anyone mentions it,  i have looked and searched all over for any known issues on this subject.  And I have DOSBOX on my CPU and its for DOS GAMES ONLY.

Solve : Those Crazy Data Discs, Baby!!!?

HaroldtheGreat

Newbie

I downloaded some video files onto blank discs, and although my Microsoft XP laptop sometimes plays them, it sometimes mistakenly reads the discs as blank.  How do I fix this?  Also, when I download video files on my PC, they work fine.  But when I try to play the discs on my laptop, I often have a lot of trouble, such as:  1. After a movie plays for awhile, my computer will suddenly shut down.  2. When I try to play certain discs, the computer tells me that the ClassFactory can't perform the requested action (or something to that effect).  3. The disc's video file will play, but fast-forwarding and rewinding are a nightmare.

How do I fix all of this?  Do I need special codecs or something?  Do the files play OK on my PC because that's where they were downloaded (as opposed to the problematic play of my laptop)?

Would someone PLEASE help me?

Solve : Problems with Installing Software on Windows XP!?

Answer» HI,

When I download a software program, from the internet, it downloads fine.  Ok, but then when I try and install it, an error message pops up saying "NSIS ERROR - The INSTALLER you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.  This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download, or a virus.  You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.  It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED.) "  This, or similar error messages like this one, have appeared when I have tried to download AOL Instant Messenger, and Earthlink TotalAccess 2005 Protection Control Center.  When trying to install AIM, I re-downloaded it about 3 times and each time it said the same thing - it was corrupted or imcomplete.  This has also happened with other small programs I download.  What is wrong?!

SYSTEM INFORMATION:

OS:  Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Computer Model:  HP Pavilion a450n (bought in 2004)

Solve : Does anyone know the service "vclone"? help!?

Answer» HEY my problem is when im playing the game call of duty 2 it crashes every 15 mins or so (freezes) either to DESKTOP,reboot or usually requiring me to physically turn off the pc. When i check the system log there is always this error at the time of the crash - The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) FAILED to load:
VClone.  I used to have virtualclone drive installed but uninstalled it weeks ago. My question is, is there a windows service called vclone that is needed as there is roughly a dozen registry entries relating to vclone. Can i delete these entries safely to check if this is the problem? Im running windows xp with all current hardware drivers and xp sp2 and hotfixes installed. Cheers , Kim. Have you PLAYED the game since uninstalling virtual clone? I think those entries are suspect. Save a copy of the registry, edit it and see what happens.

The only other THING I know similar is this:

Solve : Mysterious Problem?

Answer»

This morning as I woke up I heard an odd CHUGGING sound coming from my family computer. The power light blinks, all the power cords are correctly plugged in. The computer will not turn on at all or off. In order for the chugging NOISE and the light to stop blinking I must un-plug the computer itself. Please help is needed immediately. The monitor and all other devices plugged into the power strip work though so I've concluded it is not because of the power strip or outlet. Was the computer left on or turned off the night before?  Did a service interruption from your electrical supplier occur during the night?  Thunderstorm overnight?  Is that "power strip" supposed to be a surge protector?  How old is it?  How much did it cost?  Have you recently noticed any signs whatsoever of ABNORMAL noise or operational problems with your computer?Does holding the power button in for five seconds turn the PC off?No the computer was not left on last night, nor have we had incliment weather or electrical service problems. I have tried holding the power button and it has no response. It is not a surge protector it is just a plain power strip. I don't primarily USE the computer but my family members do, they have not noticed any problems or abnormal sounds from it. The PC does not even turn on, it just MAKES the chugging noise and the power button flashes. I have never had trouble with the computer in the past nor has anyone who uses it.J0sh......  The odd noises ....... you need to determine where they are coming from ...... A hard drive , when failing , will often make a clunking or chugging noise........ or it may be coming from the fan .... ( possibly a bearing failing) but thats more of a whine .......
I would open the case and listen ....and try and pinpoint the source of the sound.

Solve : Re: Disk scan and Defragmenter?

Answer»

Please be more exact about your question. Such as what KIND of PC you have, what OS and what did you father work on........ Information helps. [smiley=wink.gif]if your defrag freezes try running chkdsk first. start then run then type in "chkdsk"
Have you tried running Ad-Aware or SPYBOT S & D before attempting the defrag? Spyware can cause the defrag process to freeze. Check for malwares.
Do you have enough space to run defrag? Be sure.
Try in Safe Mode. You are running scan DISK at startup don't you?

Solve : Missing windows files?

Answer»

Hi
Can anyone help me, every time I START up windows (XP) I get the the message that the PC cant find windows32/svchost.exec it still works, but i have to close error MESSAGES every time, at least 5 error messages show1) Go to Start>> Run, type in: sfc /scannow  [Enter]
Windows may require you to insert your XP CD.
2)You can also use SYSTEM RESTORE to recover your system back to date before the files were missing. To activate System Restore:
Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> System TOOLS> System Restore.There is a big difference between svchost.exec and svchost.exe, it's all in the c.

Solve : Do I Have These Settings Right??

Answer»

Ok, I was told by one of my brothers friend that these settings were incorrect when I showed him on AIM. Now I'm not SURE if he's correct or not so I took a snapshot and came here to see.

Is there anything I should change?Always a contraversial subject.
How much physical ram do you have?
Most people say to set it at 1½ times your physical ram or just let WINDOWS manage it.If enough physical memory is present, the swapfile can be disabled altogether. You can experiment with settings for the swap file, even making a partition/reserving a drive solely for it if you like.
However, in most average systems, swapfile settings, unless extreme, MAKE little overall DIFFERENCE and it's best just to leave them Windows managed (Win9x excluded) .

There are some ADJUSTMENTS that need to be made in some cases where Win9x and over 512M of physical memory is present.I'm pretty sure I have 128 MB RAM.I'm pretty sure you will be OK unless you have a problem.

Solve : your computer has been infected!?

Answer»

Did you try the automatic removal software at the site GX1_Man GAVE you?
The problem with these things is that new variants keep POPPING up & it takes the antivirus/malware people a little time to catch up.
Updating & RUNNING Ewido may fix it now when it didn't fix it a couple of DAYS ago. This is a SmitFraud infection. You need to run SmitRem.
Save it on your desktop or somewhere that you can find it. Run the archive and it will create a folder called SmitRem. Do nothing yet!
Reboot to safe mode, navigate to the SmitRem folder and double click RunThis.bat.
A series of informational screens wll follow. READ each and press a key to continue.
Now the cleanup operation will begin. Any uninstallers for rogue programs will be initiated so follow the uninstall procedure.
After any rogue programs are uninstalled, the disk cleanup wizard will begin. Allow this to run it's full course.

Once done you should be able to reboot normally and free of any Smitfraud infection. A log file will be saved to c:\smitfiles.txt.

You should still check for other infections though. These things seldom seem to be unaccompanied.

Solve : explorer.exe crashing?

Answer»

Alright, I'm having a really BIG problem with my computer.

Everytime i start it, it loads EVERYTHING then it will bring up an error "explorer.exe has encountered an error and will now close".

It makes my task bar disappear, icons, and all i can see is my background.

Maybe, 5-10Minutes later i get a Blue Screen Of Death.

Any help would be fine.

Thanks, Mike.Going to need additional details about this in order to help you with this issue.

  • What version of WINDOWS are you running?
  • Have you tried booting into safe mode to see if the error happens in there?
  • Have you ran a virus scan and spyware scan on your computer if so what programs are you running?
  • Any new software/hardware recently added that could have caused this issue?
I'm running (XP Pro)

Er, AMD Athlon.

I can't even get into safe mode...don't know why.

Also i can't run my virus software because i get the BSOD 10minutes later after startup.

The last thing i was doing on the computer was downloading a map off counter-strike (STEAM).

I already deleted steam.Do your hotkeys still work? If so, bring up programs, then try to run your virus software. I think it is F4 as the computer loads to put in safe mode.I'll go try.ok, if that doesn't work, it may be F9, I am not 100% sure.Well i got to highlight the safe mode...but it never went into it.

My computer is starting to smell like plastic.

I check the thing on them.

CPU Fan Speed - 0RPM

Solve : Missing Display Properties Tabs?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP Home SP2. When I right-click on my desktop, then click on Properties, the Display Properties dialog box opens up, but it is missing several tabs. All I can now do from this window is change Themes. I haven't added any theme packs or anything else so I'm at a loss to explain what I might have done. Any suggestions on what I can do to get the rest of the Display Properties Tabs back?  :-?gorgon..... First , I wonder how you found out you were missing those tabs? I only ask because it might shed some light on whats going on .......

If you are certain your pc is virus and trojan free , I would do this ...use your system restore and restore back to a date when the desktop properties was all there.

ONE other thing you could check is your event log .....and see if theres any indication there as to whats wrong...... Check this before you try the system restore .

dl65  I periodically use the right-click menu from my desktop to change wallpapers and other setings, so I have known about those tabs for years.

I'm pretty sure my computer is virus and trojan free, and I TRIED using system restore as far back as I could (which was to the beginning of this year...I had reset the restore points), and it didn't solve the problem.

I checked the event log, and the only things of note were some errors attributed to the Windows Security Center (it said it was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor service start/stop and to monitor third party antivirus/firewall).

If it helps or if it's at all related, about ten days ago I noticed that I had lost the right-click Send To menu when viewing files in My Documents. I used the "REGSVR32 SENDMAIL" trick from the Run command line on the Start menu to get EVERYTHING back.

I should also point out that I can use Control Panel>Appearance & Themes>Change The Desktop Background  to change wallpapers and access all the other missing tab functions. It's just odd that they're now missing from the desktop right-click menu. gorgon... ok ...so if you go into control panel and click on display all the tabs are there and ok ......
Have you been using any XP tweeking programs by any chance or have you changed the themes recently ?

dl65
Hmmm...does Windows Cleanup! count as a tweaking program? That's the last thing I installed on my computer, and I've only used it once (and YES, it was within the last two months I did it).  gorgon  ...I am not familiar with Windows cleanup ........ Is that the correct name and I'll do a bit of looking and see ...it is possible that may be the culpurit.

I navigated to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System with regedit and found the following values:

(Default)                          REG_SZ             (value not set)
NoColorChoice                 REG_DWORD       0x00000000 (0)
NoDispAppearancePage     REG_DWORD      0x00000000 (0)

NoSizeChoice                   REG_DWORD       0x00000000 (0)
NoVisualStyleChoice          REG_DWORD       0x00000000 (0)

Are these values already set to zero, or do they all need to be deleted?

BTW, thanks everyone for the help so far!I'm not sure, I checked my computer (W2K) and that registry entry 'Policies\System' is not even there.
Perhaps someone can check in XP for you.Just a thought, did you re-boot after trying the kelly's fix?

Solve : adding original recovery partition?

Answer»

A while back, I totally screwed up my computer, which was then a WINDOWS XP Home machine, and got it reformatted and put XP Professional on there. When I got it back, though, my recovery partition (the part of the hard drive with all the THINGS for recovery and STUFF) went missing. Is there anyway to make another partition with all the files put directly onto the partition without the CD or am I SOL?SOL if the partition and contents are gone. Sorry.  :-/ Quote

The alternative is to order a new drive, complete with recovery partition, from the maker of the computer.

Expen$ive, if even possible.  :-/have any idea where I can get it because I ALREADY searched through tons of search results on HP, but no cigar.Contact HP directly. You will get it nowhere else, and as I said that may not even be possible.

It would be cheaper to buy a copy of XP and a copy of Ghost or True Image to make your own I suspect.

Once it loads and you see the word safe in the 4 corners and your icons load ....go into the control panel

dl65  i went in to safe mode when the windows program starts it will only let me logon my name and my password and logs me in as a user when i go to control panel it won't let me in because it says i am logon as user onlyWhat if you log on as Administrator (with a capitol A) and leave the password field blank?

Or contact the company you got it from and see how they load the administrator account. They may have a generic password for all of their machines.  This seemed to work for another poster.
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=305What a secure operating system!   There are several standalone "password revealers" available for XP. I use one in particular which reveals all passwords that are on the system. Backdated....Would you care to share the name with us ?

dl65  Is it WISE to do so on a public forum? I'll PM the info if you like.Is it a secret? It's no secret but it can be dangerous in the wrong hands. I think for the SAKE of security this sort of thing shouldn't be broadcast on such a forum.
If I was a responsible parent who'd secured the system, I'd be more than annoyed to find that little Johnny and his mates can now SURF the *censored* sites at will because of something he'd discovered here.

Solve : The old Re-Install?

Answer»

Hello Everyone !
Have an Installation issue and I'm not much help to my self any way here goes ; I am trying to re-install 98se on this old dog and my I Q is not the best but I receive an msg General Failure Reading drive A
not READY reading drive A
Invalid command.com
enter correct name of COMMAND INTERPRETER (eg,c:(COMMAND>COM)
>>
Using a windows 98se restore disk and it came with this system has worked before but ?
Was wondering what my next step should be and how do I get out of the setup without destroying everything ?
 Please let me know if ya need some info: and I will try to supply it as best I can.  You should re-install the 98se. Your computer skipped the step of reading all of the drives. If that doesn't WORK, then you might have some software troubles.Perfect Agent52;
Iam unable to do that now as I am unable to boot to my Restore CD have tried several Boot floopy's with no luck seems as though
system wants to start but then the 98 splash screen disapears allways end up at what looks like a DOS screen with the c Prompt and whenever I enter anything here it says invalid FILE or bad command such as this is a bad command (d:/> cd win98) or d:/>cd win98 ( Invalid Directory ) . don't know what to do next just waiting on some one that will try to help >Thanks Mac will give it a go as soon as possible ![timestamp=1138288395]Mac Won't be able to run this program as  i can't even use Drive A. Right now this is where I'm at my system is not recognizing any drives but A,B,C,S,R, ? Where some of these drive's are is beyond me. Have run fdisk from my restore cd from one of my CD drives today as a matter a fact the only thing that will spin on this old DOG in what I thought DOS or at least it looked like such, deleted all partitions Primary last as usual would re-boot back to fdisk enter #4 and they or the primary would still be there, so instead of re-booting the next time I returned to the begining of fdisk entered #4 and no existing partition's would show up!!! Go figure! So! Right now I'm sitting here looking at it from across the room and re-booted went to BIOS set up made the hard drive the First boot device and CD-DVD secondary and hit F10 enter and the old boy is sitting over there staring at me with it's one eye wide open saying to me the hard drive or something is stuck.a switch or something. OH WELL Back I go !!! Will return later. [timestamp=1138324222][size=12][/size][size=18][/size]Perfect Agent52
I think I have discovered my problem ! I just happened to have a copy of XP Pro in the drawer and stuck it in the old drive and she started to load and install ! I didn't finish the install of course so I must have a bad or buggie restore cd and have to decide on whether or not to finish installing XP Pro on the old Dog or go to Amazon and purchase a copy of 98se for around $70.00 buck's.
Oh YEA!  Mark this one solved !!!You can probably get a copy of 98 for less, or you can use the XP if the system has enough horsepower to run it, and it has a valid code that is not being used on another computer. You didn't state the system specs for the "old dog".

Solve : new boot drive??

Answer»

Hi,
I set up a RAID 10 array USING 4 hd's and an LSI 4 drive pci board.  I partitioned the drives into a C,D, and E drives, with the C drive being 5 gbs.  That has turned out to be too SMALL for what goes to the C drive ( restore points, temp files, etc.)  Program and data files go to the D and E drives.  I would like to hook a 30 gb HD up to the Motherboard through the IDE channel on the mb, and make that the C boot drive.  Is it POSSIBLE to change the C boot drive to the new HD and reassign the 5 gb's to drive F, and keep all the settings and info that are on the C drive now?  Can I just hook the drive up, mirror the old C and the new C, then reboot?  Will the OS look to the onboard IDE channel before the PCI board?  I am running XP Pro.  Thanks in advance.

Solve : Box with unicode characters before the welcome...?

Answer»

Hi all,

I don't know what I did to arrive with this problem, but when I log on now, before the welcome screen and log in names, I'm greeted with a TEXT box and an OK button on it.  I believe the characters on the title bar and inside the box are unicode characters.  You have to click ok, and then you can get to the users screen.  I don't know how to get rid of this.  Any ideas?

THANKS!

If you would click on the Self Help link below and TRY out the on-line scanner that could help you, and if you care to scroll down the page there are some freeware anti-virus and anti-Trojan programs which could help too.

Solve : Can't add a network place?

Answer»

yet another problem with my PC!
Recently I tried to set up a simple network with two COMPUTERS, one with an ADSL wireless MODEM (computer A) and another with a USB adapter (Computer B) . They both share an internet connection and somehow (I cant remember) i managed to set it up so that A could access B but not the other way round. Using B I tried all the network wizards, wireless setup, home network etc. but the closest I  got was with the 'Add Network Place' wizard. I typed in the location on the files I wanted to access on computer A, eg \\Computer-A-333\SharedDocs and nothing happened for a few minutes until it told me that it was an invalid address or SOMETHING, but if I type in a completely random address in, eg. \\blahblah\random then windows would NEAR enough instantly tell me that it was an invalid address.
Something is happening but isnt quite making it.
Is what im trying to do even possible?

Solve : Windows XP does not start?

Answer»

Hi All,

My friend upgrade his Norton Antivirus online. After he restarted his LAPTOP after installing Antivirus, it could not BOOT up. The system stopped with a black screen and a blinking cursor just after displaying of Compaq logo.

His laptop is Compaq Presario X1000 with Windows XP Home Edition, still with SP1 I believe.

I checked the Bios and there seems no problem. Then I tried to reinstall the Windows XP from the Recovery CD but it says that the partition is not recognized by Windows XP. I know it is easy to delete the partition but my friend will hate to lose whats on his laptop.

I got into the Recovery Console, copied a new version of boot.ini with NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files but it didn't work. I would try to run Fixboot and Fixmbr but I am afraid RUNNING fixmbr may damage the partition. Would appreciate your guys can help me out here. LIKE to stop some services or something. Thanks.

Forgot to mention that I did try to change the registry files but still could not get the system boot up.

DanielNew update on the laptop.

Finally, I ran Fixboot following by fixmbr under Recovery Console. The system boot up to allow me to select the operating system to start. Well, both are Windows XP Home Edition. No matter which one I chose, it just boot up to pass displaying of Windows XP logo and then an error message says that: Autochk program not found - skiping autocheck. And then it loops back to reboot and the same thing on and on.

I did press F8 to get into Windows Advanced Options Menu but no matter which options I chose, Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt or others, the system read some files and then stop and get into a loop again to reboot.

I was hoping can get into the Command prompt to at least back up some data then delete the partition and reinstall everything but couldn't so FAR. If anyone can help would greatly appreciate. Thanks.

DanielYour options are to "slave' this hard drive into another computer with a CDRW drive and save your data, OR load a LinuxLivecD and then save your files to a CDRW or across a network or to a PenDrive.

http://knoppix.com/Thanks. I have experience with adding a second (slave) hard disk with a desktop but don't know about adding a laptop hard disk to a desktop. Also I am not clear about "Slave this hard drive into another computer with a CDRW drive". I have read your respond to other posts and your suggestion about load a LinuxLiveCD. I will try that and see if I can get it to work. Then if necessary will try slave it to a desktop. Thanks a lot. Will post the result after I tried it.

DanielIt's real easy to use a Linux Live CD. Just burn it as an ISO. Merely copying the files will not work. Nero and other burning software can do this.  It is really easy and thank you so much. Knoppix is really great. Highly recommended for backing up data from a malfunction Windows system. Again appreciate your help, GX1_man.

Imagine that, another Windows user SAVED by Linux!!!!!

Glad you are up and running, and thanks for posting back.

Solve : Adobe Reader and internet access?

Answer»

Hello,
Having recently bought a new computer I decided to DOWNLOAD ‘Adobe Reader 7’ off the internet so that I would have the ability to read PDF files.
After the download had completed I noticed that I had ALSO acquired a program called ‘Adobe Photoshop Album Starter EDITION 3’, which I did not ask for, and also my Internet Explorer had acquired an additional taskbar from ‘Yahoo’.
I also started having problems connecting to the internet that I didn’t have before. At first it was impossible to get into the internet apart from in an offline status. I eventually got access back by uninstalling the Yahoo taskbar using the uninstall programs tool in Windows and running a full system scan with my Norton anti-virus software. (The operating system is Windows XP home with SP2).
My problem now is that whenever I try to connect to the internet I get a message saying ‘Web page unavailable while offline’ and an option to connect with a connect button on the dialogue box. When I do so the internet seems to work OK. I have tried changing the homepage but I still receive the message.
My question is how do I get rid of this annoying message every time I try to connect to the internet and why has this happened in the first place? I thought such a POPULAR software download such as Adobe Reader could be trusted not to mess up a computer.
Any answers or comments will be appreciated.

Thanks,
John.
You have to be VERY careful when downloading Reader 7 or you will get all of this junk too. I would uninstall this as well as any toolbars and other programs you recognnize as new since then, reboot and see if that fixes it.  (Do this from Control Panel/Addand remove Programs. You can also do a system restore to a point before you installed all of tthis.

There are many other free pdf readers available. You might want to try them.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=pdf+readerI would uninstall Adobe Reader, then go back to a Restore Point prior to the time you installed it, if you still have such a Restore Point.  Then, I would re-download Adobe Reader and, this time, be sure to uncheck the boxes for Yahoo! Toolbar and Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.  The option to not install Yahoo! Toolbar and Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition is shown on the download site at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

I'm skeptical about your believe that installing Adobe Reader is the cause of that message your're seeing, the message saying ‘Web page unavailable while offline’.  I've installed Adobe Reader 7 on several computers, and I've never seen that happen as a result.  I'm inclined to think that's a separate issue.  Take a look at the Microsoft reference: "Web Page Unavailable While Offline" Message When You Click a Hyperlink a Second Time in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
IE>FILE>Work Offline... Untick it.

Im running winxp and using outlook 2002. been getting my emails fine for about 3-4 months then it just suddenly STOPPED working

when i test the account settings i get:

Establish NETWORK connection - Completed
Find outgoing mail server (SMTP) - Completed
Find incoming mail server (POP3) - Completed
Log onto incoming mail server (POP3) - Failed
Send test email - Failed

When i click on the errors tab it says:

the specified server was found but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct.

My incoming server (POP3) is on port 110
and Outgoing server (STMP) is on port 25

Please can any1 help on this, i can still get my mail by going to wanadoo web mail but its doing my head in :-?

rocketpantsbob....  Did this just start .....today ........It's quite possible that your service providers mail service is down ........ It does happen occassionaly.

dl65  No, it HAPPENED about 2/3 WEEKS ago, keep checking every day cos i THOUGHT it may be thatRing your ISP.Have you installed a firewall by any chance?I have norton internet security 2005, but i have been able to get my mail with this running fine until the above just happened

I've tried turning off email scanning on incoming and outgoing mail, but this has no effectSounds like your ISP changed to requiring authentication for both incoming and outgoing servers.  It is a checkbox setting in outlook.  I am not at a system where outlook is installed or I would give you specifics.  Look under TOOLS - OPTIONS and see if that checkbox is blank and check it.  Then test your settings.  Good luck.

Solve : Windows XP not loading?

Answer»

Hello, I have a HP Pavilion N5240 Notebook that is running Windows XP. When I BOOT up after windows loads I get this following error: "Explorer.EXE - Unable to locate Component" (Could not locate WININET.DLL) . My laptop was working fine before.

I can see my desktops background and that is all. I leave it on to see if anything else loads but nothing will show. There are no longer any icons not even the windows Taskbar. My screensaver comes out as well, but I can not access anything. I try to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot my notebook but it won't even let me do that.

Any help is greatly appreciated. It sounds like you may have had a virus on your computer.  There are several viruses that target the wininet.dll file.  Depending on your antivirus software, I have seen antivirus DELETE this file because it cannot repair it.  If you have your windows XP cd handy, you can put it in your computer before you start it up.  You may have to hit a key on the keyboard to get your computer to boot to the cd (usually f12).  Once you boot to the windows XP cd, there should be an OPTION to repair your windows installation.  Choose this option.  This should put the file back on your computer.

When you do get the system to boot correctly, make sure you have current virus definitions, and run a full virus scan.

If your virus scanner is expired, check out HTTP://www.avast.com.  They have a FREE virus scanner available for download, provided that it is for personal use only.

I hope this helps.

Solve : data discs?

Answer»

Would someone PLEASE help me?What kind of video files? What format? What software are you using? What operating system? What hardware? Did it ever work right? Any details at all?Mostly AVI and DIVX.  I've tried several players, and Windows Media Player CLASSIC seems to work best.  On my PC (which never has trouble), it's the regular Windows Media Player.  I burned the discs with Record Now!, and YES, my laptop has played some of them in the past.

Solve : Usernames and passwords for XP?

Answer»

I have a Windows XP computer.
I am thinking about making more user names.
If I MAKE a new user name, will I still be able to access all of the programs on the main user?
What will happen to Outlook Express and the My Documents?
Will I be able to COPY these to other user names?
Can I make all of the users Administrator users?
Depending on the answers I get, I may or may not make more users.
I will have to convince my sister first.
Q: If I make a new user name, will I still be able to access all of the programs on the main user?
A: Yes.

Q: What will happen to Outlook Express and the My Documents?
A: Unless you SETUP your E-mail account on the other user, it will be unaccessable with the new username. My Documents will still be viewable by default, but only if the new user goes into YOUR My Documents Folder. Every user gets their own. If you do not WANT anyone else to have access to your my docs folder, that can be done.

Q: Will I be able to copy these to other user names?
A: Your files? Certainly.

Q: Can I make all of the users Administrator users?
A: Certainly.

Keep in touch with us

FlameThanks!
Would there be any setups that I would have to go through again?
What are some cons of more user names?

Solve : install windowxp?

my computer has some DRIVERS MISSINGS i couldnt find them in the INTERNET to download.
and if i install WINDOW xp to my computer would it install new drivers or not?

10xSome or All of them. It depends what hardwares you use...See the link below to see the list of XP built-in drivers.
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/default.mspxAn XP installation will only install the most current drivers approved by Microsoft at the time XP was issued.  You may find that some of your drivers are available and work fine.  More esoteric (or new, or rare) hardware is less likely to be supported.

When looking for updated drivers, ALWAYS go to the manufacturer's site first, and follow the support links.missings DRIVERS

Solve : Windows suddenly freezing up?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

A couple of days ago my power supply fan started making grinding noises, VERY intermitently.  A few days ago the computer froze on me. After 10 minutes I powered it down and it restarted and operated normally.  Night before last I powered down the computer and the next morning when we started it up 1) the power supply fan was 'grinding' again and 2) the computer froze as windows was loading (before the user/password screen popped up).  It continued doing this despite power downs and reboots.  I was able to start it back up in safe mode.  I went into the event viewer and there were a bunch or errors with processes being stopped.  When inquiring on the microsoft site, they (naturally) had no information on these errors.  The CMOS reported the CPU was cool temperature WISE.   The voltages appeared to be steady though I dought it would display spikes.  The only ODD thing was that the 'system' fans RPM was varrying by as much as 100 rpm's every few seconds.

When trying to fix the problem I:
 Throughly cleaned all dust
   Same Problems
Removed the floppy DRIVE and the 2 cd-rom's from the system.
    Same Problems
Attemptd to run a Check Disk on the harddrive but it froze 1/2 way through the 4th step.

Heres the kicker.  Today it seems to be running fine.  The event viewer is not showing any errors and the PSU fan is running smoothly although the the RPM's are still varrying.

My question is:  Could all this be power supply related?  Or is likely some other problem?

My system is:
AMD Sempron CPU
Windows XP home edition

Thanks for any help guys!!!wadehart... Quote

That fan should not be making "grinding noises" ......  It's very possible it's beginning to break down...AND it could well be creating the other issues you are describing ........ PSUs aren't all that expensive........ I would be inclined to get a new one ......... and remember don't go for the cheapest one ......SELECT the wattage you want and perhaps even a higher wattage would be advisable....because if you add.... say a additional HD , optical drive or a larger vid card the higher wattage PSU will still be adequate.

dl65  You already know what the problem is. Just put in a new QUALITY power supply. Let us know how that works for you.
