Solve : Duo OS on my PC?

Answer»

Hi,

I have partitioned my hard drive. I installed Win2K on one partition and WinXP on the other. When I restart, I have a choice of either OS When I start Win2K, everything seen to work well, but when I try to start up with WinXP, it give me this message "Windows2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted \windows\system32\config\systemd".

I consulted the MS knowledge base, It wasn't any help. PERHAPS some of you can help.

Thank you in advance.

Richard.Hi MAC,

Thanks for the quick answer. My HD has 80G, I partitioned a third of it as C drive which is where I installed WinXP and 2 third of it as D drive which is where Win2K installled.  Do you think that's the problem?

BTW, oth OSs are Pro, not te Home version.

I guess I don't know enough partition, when I install WinXP, I just folllowed the instruction oof the XP cd to make the partition as MS knowledge base suggested,
did I do it WRONG? I don't undersxtand what this First Logical, Second Logical... mean? What do they mean?  :-?

How do I make a copy oof the boot.ini file?

Thanks again.

Richard.Hi Mac,

OK,  I will start all over again. Back to the drawing board.

I will bug you again if you don't mind.

Richard.Hey Mac,

You were right. I switched  the OS with Win2k first and XP on the second partition, now it works beautifully.

Thank you so much for the help.

Richard.   Thanks for taking the time to let EVERYONE know this resolved your issue.  Oh, btw, "What did the MS KB Article suggest you do? "

Well, it guilded me through the partition process with WinXP but it didn't mention that the OLDER OS should be in the  first partition.

Richard.

Solve : Blurry pictures and large titles?

Answer»

Kind of hard to explain: I have windows 98 SET for 800x600 and true color 32 bit.  Recently formated past december.  Changed ISP'S from Local to PeoplePc.com.

There might be a setting that I don't know about that needs attention.

Noticed also when I am on another forum that I associated with and when there is a URL Address for us to click to go to another direction I get a little RED hand like it was saying "No" and a buzz sound.  I can copy the address and pasted into the address bar and that works but I shouldn't have to do this.

I think it might have something to do with Peoplepc but I have not had any success in calling them so you know how that goes!!

I am checking out there site but no information.  It could be their blocker. And you are using what for adware/spyware/virus protection? You have to start with a clean system.I am using "spybot SEARCH and destroy and Ad-Aware SE PERSONAL and People PC has it's on blocker and virus control.

HarryThey may be protecting you from yourself.

What if you hold the mouse cursor  over the link to see what it is (look right above START next to the IE icon). Then type it in by hand and see if you can get to the same site via this other method. :DGot it all figured out!!

It was my Pop up and my Acceleration Level with People PC.  For blurry pictures I needed to slow down the acceration to level 1 and to MAKE the url's work turn off the pop up.  Thanks for the interested person above for showing interest but you made me think it through.

HarryGlad you are up and running. That is the performance hit you take for acceleration.

Solve : Links from emails in Outlook Express to the web.?

Answer»

Somehow any links that I RECEIVE in emails have stopped working. If I click on them I am taken to Internet Explorer but nothing is put in the adress field.  If the link is a full web adress then I can COPY and paste it and it will work, but more usually the link is just a "click here" type message, and then I am really  stuck!  What have I done? [smiley=huh.gif] Quote

... What have I done? [smiley=huh.gif]

That's the question that you might have to answer for us.  Did this behavior start soon after you installed new software, a Windows update, or new hardware device drivers?  If so, you may still have time to use the Windows XP or Windows ME System Restore utility to restore your computer's system files to the state they were in prior to the problem.

Let us know,
Doc
Thanks for responding so quickly Doc. I tried System Restore as soon as I read your suggestion (and had not realised how powerful it is on XP). I had  loaded some drivers for a "pre-XP" scanner and a webcam and so went back to before then , to MID November in fact. But, no luck; the link problem remains and I suspect now that I have probably had it ever since having a new hard disc and processor installed earlier in November - I had crashed my drive after corrupting XP,  apparently by running the drive pretty close to full. I am a Brit living in France and since my French is not always up to translating all the Windows commands on my French pc, my neighbour did the change-out for me.  I know I must sound like a pretty hopeless case but I would really appreciate suggestions as to what to try next.Derek:

PERHAPS the easiest fix is to do a repair installation of Windows XP:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLG%2CGGLG%3A2005-29%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=%22repair+installation%22+windows+xp+site%3Amicrosoft.com&btnG=Search

You may also do a search for support documents in the French language:

http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?gssnb=1

I lived in Europe for a few years, but never visited France.  Maybe some day i will!

Take it easy,
Doc DerekinFrance   ......Just a quick question ......... If I read you right ....... You haven't been able to open links from your E mail since you had the HD and CPU replaced back in November ....... If that correct are you sure that your outlook express is setup properly ?
One more thought ...is your Internet Explore set as your default browser or are you using something else ?

Solve : please help im new at this?

Answer»

I so upset im new at htis WHOLE thing but here's the situation.
i bought a computer for my brother and it had windows xp
then after i bought him his mine crashed so someone said just install windows xp from his computer we both have dells
so i did then  it was running like new heres the problem  it says i have to register it with product key  or it will be no longer available in 30 days can this be true?? and is so is there a way around this? i bought that pc for my brother i dont have a dime and lady at dell told me 80 do;;ars and i have to buy my own copy  please any help would be so appreciated as if i have to buy this i will be with out computer for MONTHS while i save money  it angers me as i have had this dell 9 years and then bought that one for him and they want more  money  ugfgghg   THANKS for any help
kimberly  :-?Your issues are with Microsoft, not Dell. Microsoft says you pay for one copy of WIndows and can use it on one computer. If you want it on another computer it has to be off the first computer. To enforce this, they have devised the activation scheme you are dealing with. IF trhe other computer is not being used you can call Microsoft and explain.

You can install his copy of WIndows on your computer if you use the 25 digit registration code that is on your computer. Since it is a Dell it should be affixed to the side or top of the machine. If you look at the codes, yours and his are different.

Any questions call Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/evaluation/features/activation.mspx
thank you so much your the first person to help me
so instead of giving them his  dell code if i give mine i should be all set?
as it was his software and he is still using his windows xp
thanks in advance this was REALLY worrying me i cant thank you enough
kimmyalso will it matter that i was running mellenium and not windows xp they will know  that  ? thanks  kimmyLet me clarify a little more. It's not a Dell code, it's a Windows code - 25 digits like xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx and is on a litle sticker that says Windows and the version (like XP). Windows ME and Windows XP are not the same. If he is still using his version of XP you cannot use it and it cannot be activated while still activated to him.

If there is only one running computer, you can use XP on that, if there is only one copy involved.

Again, Bill Gates says one copy of Windows for each computer. You can't share. Also, you don't even own it - ever. You are paying for the right to use it. Read this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/eula.mspx

oh bummer  not good news for me thank you sooo much again
kimmy
You're welcome, and good luck!W2K Rules! Yep, still does. ...NONE of the fluff......

Solve : Windows Media Player v10?

Answer»

For some reason, when I start Windows Media Player (V10) the screen that should come up seems to just go off into cyberspace. It doesn't matter if I start it by inserting a CD, clicking on it in the Programs listing or just by clicking on the icon, it does the same thing. It appears on the task bar showing me that it has loaded, but NOTHING comes up on the screen. If I click to Maximize, the listing on the task bar seems to fly off to the upper right of my screen and still nothing comes up on the screen. I tried reloading it from both the original XP (Home Edition) CD and from the SP2 CD, but no results. I also tried to restore to an earlier restore point and it SAYS nothing has changed and won't do anything. What should I do?Scan for viruses and spyware. Then if that doesn't work, UNINSTALL, reboot and reinstall it.Thanks for the quick response. I ran my Norton Antivirus and AdAware.  No viruses detected and eliminated some data miner spyware.  Otherwise appears to be clean.  Rebooted, and WMP still not working.  My next problem is how to delete the program.  My first thought was to delete it in Control Panel>Install/Remove Programs, however, WMP wasn't listed there.  I then deleted it from the Programs page (Start>Programs>...). I think all that did was remove a shortcut.  Then I tried deleting the folder through Microsoft Explorer and I get a message telling me I can't delete this program because it is being used.  Ok, so I tried just moving the folder to another "temporary" location, rebooted, and to my amazement, it had reappeared in the Programs folder again.  (Now I have the folder in 2 places and it still doesn't work.)  So I guess my next question has to be "How the heck do I uninstall this program?" :-?  HI lads,
Greetings from Ireland, anyway, i'm new. I've a question about windows media player 10. If i click a link with a movie on the page the movie wont play. Any ideas? I'm running norton 2005. An example of a link is below.

http://www.break.com/index/familyguydoc.html

I'm not advertising the site by the way, it's just an example.

Let me know what you all think

CheersStevie,

Greetings, but you have hijacked someone else's thread. The correct thing to do is to to start a new thread with your specific issue. It gets confusing to RESPOND to more than one PERSON, even if the situations seem similar.

Thanks.  Apologies, i'll do that now.

Solve : Windoes swap file is 1.6GB on my 4GB hardrive !?!??

Answer»

Hi. Recently did a complete uninstall / reinstall of my entire computer. I'm now running a Pentium II 466Mhz, with 64MB of RAM and an INTEL 810 internal graphics card, and a 4GB hard drive. Everything has worked fine for about a year but now my Virtual Memory swap file (win386.swp) has grown to be 1.6GB on the C: drive. I'm technically only using 1GB of my drive for files, and 2 GAMES (Virtua Cop 2 and Championship Manager 2001 - 2002), but after boot-up I literally only get abut 15-20 MINUTES of using my PC before it tells me it can't do any more. When I boot-up, the swap file is small and gros in those 15-20 minutes. But it was working fine last week; this is very a recent problem. I know this website said the swap file can "grow very large" but surely not to 1/4 of the drive's size in such a short time from boot-up. I also have EasyMessage, Word '97 and Winamp installed.

Can someone please help? What are you using for adware/spyware/virus REMOVAL on a regular basis? Have you tampered with the Windows memory settings? There is definitely something amiss here.....

Solve : Can't get into my system ..... Help !!?

Answer»

The system: Compac 7940 runnning Win 98 SE, 256 MB RAM, 700 Mhz, 30 G HD, Creative Labs sound card, running Vcom System Suite 5. and Comcast DSL with Linksys Router

The problem: System will boot, Win 98 boot bar will run at the bottom of the screen, all is well until prompt asks for Microsoft Net Working password .. I've always just HIT the X in the top right corner to close the box or just hit OK w/o typing any password to bypass it completely. Now if I do that I GET TOLD that I've committed an illegal act and the system will now  shut down ... the error box tells me that I've caused an Explorer page fault and gives me almost the entire alphabet of fault code. But the strange thing is that even though the screen goes black and nothing happens , I can still hear the tone that 98 gives when it opens up the desktop ..... I've gone to ctrl/alt/delete just to see if Explorer or any other program is running and all I have is a blank box. I've tried booting in the safe mode and tried using the boot disk.... no joy ...... can you help me restore Explorer    thanxSame thing happens when you hit the escape key?

Are you free of spyware/adware/virii? That is always a good  place to start because you can't fix things if the system is not clean. Has anything been added or changed in the past few days, HARDWARE or software?

If you have data on there that you need you might slave this hard drive into a working machine to save it now. If it is totally buggered for whatever reason you may need to reinstall.  Do you have a Windows CD? If it won't boot to the Win98 boot disk or to the desktop, you don't have a good way to fix things, especially easily.  Is that the original Windows install on that machine?

Solve : windows shutting down, please help?

Answer»

I have a pretty GOOD computer that is about 1.5 years old.  I have windows XP.  Everything with my computer works pretty well except for one problem.  I have hi-speed internet access and after about 30-45 minutes of using the internet my computer will suddenly shut itself off and RESTART.  It restarts fine and goes BACK to working fine, until I use the internet for another 30-45 minutes and then it shuts down again.  Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks for your help.freddiezee..... Have you checked to be sure you don't have some nasty guests?
Can you check your CPU temperature and see if perhaps it's a heat issue that causing the shutdown?

dl65  I don't think it's the fan, since the comp. only shuts down if on the net and not in any other program.  What do you mean by nasty guests? How do I take care of that?also, how do I check the CPU temp? What is the computer or motherboard make/model? There may be a utility to check the temps.

He meant scan for spyware, adware and viruses. What programs do you have in place and being used regularly for this?

Solve : Help with XP Installation (recover files )?

Answer»

Ok , here's my problems

I was using window xp (english version) then i install the xp on top of the english version (chinese version)  but after i install the xp again , i loss all my programs and files. btw, I didn;t format before i install , i just install it over the english version.

I am just curious that if window del all those programs and files for me or ? There're some files that i really need , what can i do ? If i choose the window restore option would I be able to gain those files back again ? Or is there any software on the market today will hlep me recover those files ?

If the install formatted the DRIVE, those files are GONE. You said you didn't format, but if the files are not there I expect you did.

If they were PROGRAM files, some key portions may have gotten overwritten and would require reinstallation ofo the programs from the original source, but I think you must be talking about data files.

You can try professional data recovery services - but they are expen$IVE!!

Combining language VERSIONS like this is never a good idea, but you already know that now.

Solve : Cant place any wallpaper on desktop?

Answer»

my windows xp always runs fine till yesterday.it seems now i cant choose any wallpaper anymore.
when i right click on desktop and take properties and go to desktop, its not possible anymore to choose a background for the desktop.everything is locked there and cant choose any option no more.
even when i go to my picturefolder and choose a photo i cant rightclick on it and set it as wallpaper, when i do that it wont do anything.can somewone help me i tried everything but noting works.Well le's star with two assumptions. You are the only user of this system and have not been monkeying around inside the case. And you have current spyware/adware/virus protection in PLACE and being used.

Can you confirm any or all of this and be specific about it as well as what happened prior to this and what you have tried to do to correct it?Hey thx for your reply so fast.....

first of all its not my comp but from family of me they asked me to fix it couse its wass full of spyware and viruses.
i installed spysweeper first to remove al te spyware and then i installed panda titanium antivirus to remove all viruses.
this comp wass al f'kt upp and CRASHED al the time.now it seems to be spy and virus free.i cleand the registry removed all useless
sofware and reinstaled all drivers,i changed almost everything exxept the OS.now its works just fine and its pretty fast again and he dont crash anymore.everything works fine now but only 1 thing doesnt work.....i cant put any wallpaper on the desktop couse everything is locked at DISPLAY properties ans cant choose any wallpaper (not even those that are from windows standart).
i know pretty much of pc's and can do almost everything on a pc but this one is a big riddle for me,its the first time i encounter this problem and really dont know what to do anymore.I wont reinstal the OS cause its HDD has only 1 partition and a lots of files that cant be erased. thx for any reply...

Specs are:

Windows XP Home Dutch edition
AMD XP 2400+ MSI KM2M Combo MOBO VIA KM266 Chipsed based.
onboard S3 Graphics ProsavageDDR.
HDD Maxtor ATA 40gb.Well unfortunately we know:

1) This was an old install of WIndows
2) It had MANY PROBLEMS, some of which appear to have been fixed
3) We are limited in solutions because cannot reinstall a good OS
4) The only apparent issue is wallpaper, but there may be more

So it may be possible to do an 'over the top" Windows reinstall if you have the CD, or live with it if you don't or the problem isn't THAT bad for you. You can't do a system restore because you would reintroduce the problems.

Unfortunately, that's the only solutions I see.  Backing up data would be a good idea before anything else is done.Thx alot m8...i wil try the ''over the top'' install and i hope that the problem then is solved.
i will reply again to let you know if it does the trick.

[smiley=thumbsup.gif]thx for the help.May the Force be with you!

you can't just copy the files DIRECTLY from within Windows to get a bootable RESTORE.

Solve : Lag and BSOD--rdbss.sys issue??

Answer»

I recently installed a very crappy network adapter (ZyXEL ZyAIR G-320 v2) and it's causing my computer to go berserk. I'm losing my connection every few hours, which follows up with incredible lag. I have to restart my computer as if it was in a hard lock. If I try to restart via the GUI, I get lagged out and a blue SCREEN that says Stop 0x0000000f4 with file rdbss.sys, etc. It's pretty strange as suddenly when I try to restart during this "lag period" I see my Windows XP look differently. Sometimes when I click on Turn Off Computer in the start menu, it shows up as a Log Off menu, with only Log Off and Switch User options. I click Log Off and I'm sent to a black screen with a small window to log in, similar to the logins for Windows 98 where there are multiple users. Also note that during this period, I cannot reconnect my internet connection.

My system stats are:

Dell DIMENSION 8250
Pentium 4 2.6 GHz, 120GB HDD, GeForce4 MX, 256MB RAM

Please help me out, thanks a bunch in advance.Tamashii........   Have you tried uninstalling the ethernet card and then reinstalling it .

Did drivers come with it or are you using the drivers in xp.

dl65  Nice system with a crappy card. SOmetimes these "el cheapos" do better with their own drivers (as they should), sometimes with whatever XP assigns to them, and sometimes never very well regardless.

You may want to disable your onboard NIC as well, at least until this is sorted out.I went ahead and uninstalled the program and unplugged the card. I also disabled the onboard NIC. I reinstalled the card by following the instructions provided (I assume that the driver is extracted from windows XP because the cd only has the program to run the service). I tried getting the driver off their site, but what is supposedly a "driver" executable, is actually the same install file found on the cd! Talk about horrendous!

The same problems are occuring, but without the blue screen. But I'm sure that I would get the BSOD again if I leave my computer on long enough (I forgot to mention that I get BSOD sometimes when I restart during the lag period, and sometimes when I just leave my computer alone for several hours; I'd wake up to check my downloads and, hey, it's a BSOD!).

I really am clueless about the situation. I'm sure that my computer would be fine and dandy without the *censored* network adapter in, but I need an internet connection (and spending money for another card does not seem like an option at the moment). I'm going to reformat my hard-drive and reinstall Windows tomorrow just to see if that will solve anything. That sounds like the way to go if you're game. Be sure and install the software for the wireless NIC and then shutting down BEFORE adding the hardware. I don't see that model even listed on their download page, so make sure what you have. Where did you get this item? And don't be shy about contacting them. You bought their product.

http://www.zyxel.co.uk/Downloads___Drivers.47.0.htmlThanks for the response. I had installed it just as you had described: software first, shut off, card in, boot up. The driver installs itself, apparently.

I will try calling ZyXEL tomorrow as a last resort. The last time I called them was awkward. The same guy who answered my phone answer my email: "Max, right? I'm answering your email right now..." That was ten minutes after I had sent the email. I got a response after I hung up the phone. I have sent two emails over this issue in the last few days and they have no responded for over a WEEK. That speaks for itself.

The lag period kicked in three times TODAY. The most recent one proved to be INTERESTING. I had a word processor up and decided to save some documents before everything blew up. I clicked on the start menu and scrolled into the Programs list (taking about two minutes to do this) and found that every program folder was "(empty)" and the .exe icons were not available (had the "unknown file type" icon in place of it). I boot up the computer again and find that my documents were missing. Has this somehow escalated to a RAM issue?Everything went smoothly with the reformat, my computer works a little faster and I've got a bunch of free hard disk space.

But the network adapter issue has not been resolved. I had SP2 in, virus-scanned, Spybot'ed, etc. None of that seem to be the cause. I'm still getting the blue RDBSS.sys error and the lag time that is a precursor to the BSOD.

Solve : Windows Me Update Problem?

Answer»

Hi...hope someone can help me with these 3 problem areas which I think are related. #1) I can go to Windows Update site and move around within it but when I ask to update it won't go past "searching for updates". . #2) When trying to open a link on Outlook email, it won't open, but if I rt click and "add to favorites" I can open it from there.  #3) When I go to Start, Search, For Files, nothing happens. In the past, this has never happened. I could not access my Discover Desktop either.  My ISP gave me Ad-aware and I ran that a few times.  My NORTON anti-virus is up-to-date. I used System Restore and I got rid of folders that I no longer use.  I have dial-up 56K. I have plenty of room on my C drive. Any help would be appreciated.   Try Spybot and the online virus scanner at trendmicro.com. Also download and run Ewido. Let's make sure that system is pest free for starts.

How much time are you allowing your machine to search for updates? With a dial-up connection, it could take a while. Look for brother Billy to end ME support soon, so consider an upgrade to XP or 98 .Happy New Year Everyone. Thank you for your help. I downloaded and ran AVG and it detected a Trojan Horse Dialer.24.AY.  My Norton AV did not pick this up!  I removed the Norton but could not remove Symantec Live as it says FILE is NEEDED for Norton AV & the Norton Utilities that I had on in 2004 even tho I removed them??   I still cannot use my Start "Search for files & folder", it doesn't even acknowledge that I click on it or the Windows Update on the Start.  Also, when I Ctrl, Alt Delete I see "IEXPLORE"...I never had that before, this is in addition to EXPLORE.  What is that???

I have not run SPYBOT as yet since I have Ad Aware which my ISP suggested I run.  I haven't had the time to keep working on the links not opening, sometimes they will after a long time. Again thanks for all your help I do appreciate it! You have a bug, follow these steps to the letter and you will be free of it.

If you still have a problem after that lot then show us a Hijackthis log.Hi all....thank you for the help. OK, Fed,  I did exactly as you directed and Spybot had 44 problems corrected; however, it did not correct the problems completely. I can go to Windows update from Start but it locks up on the searching for updates.  I still can't open a link in my email, it locks up..not responding but if I put the link in favorites I can open it.

You asked me to show you a Hijackthis log.......where do I find that?

I spoke to my ISP Tech Support today and he suggested I upgrade to XP as ME and 2K are going to lose support soon. He also suggested I upgrade my Ram to 512, right now I have 256.  But I was wondering if I could try my Recovery CD-Rom by Systemax (Tiger) as I can't afford to update at this time. Would that solve the opening of links problem? Thank you again. Quote

Solve : Can't install Windows Xp Home Edition SP2 disk?

Answer»

Hello.
I recently purchased a computer building kit online at tigerdirect.com and i put together the computer.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1710559&Sku=M450-2304%20A

I also purchased the Windows XP Home Edition Embedded with Service Pack 2.

I can't seem to install it. It locks up during installation. I've even tried a boot disk but all i got was this error.

File \ntkrnlmp.exe could not be found.
The error code is 7.
Setup cannot continue.
Press any key to continue.

So now im stuck with a computer that wont install Windows. Anyone have any IDEAS about what to do? Im stumped. Thanks.

-Hobbes2424Always suspect the hardware configuration first. Was this all pre-built or did you have tot assemble some or all of it?well i didnt actually build any of the pieces but i put together the computer..
such as i installed the CPU into the MOTHERBOARD and mounted the fan on

all that good stuff

i just recently returned the motherboard cause it was faulty and i just recieved it yesterday.

What did he faulty MB do or not do? Same symptoms?nah the video didnt display at all and no boot beep. so i sent it back and they GAVE me a new one.So you installed the MB and the CPU/heatsink?the heatsink was already installed on the motherboard but yes i installed the other thingsMore likely a build error tthan 2 bad motherboards in a row don't you think?yeah i wouldnt think that they would send me another bad one. but you never know...
what do you suggest i do? im pretty sure i installed everything correctly
i mean it just freezes during the installation of Windows. wouldnt that be a problem with something else? or could it be the RAM?Did you do a google search? Look at this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812580&Product=winxp

and this

http://www.google.com/search?q=ntkrnlmp.exe+&btnG=Search&hl=en&lr=hmm so maybe i should go into the bios and see if i can DISABLE ACPI
i'll go try that nowjust out of curiosity.. would it be possible to just temporarily put the hard drive into this computer and install windows here and then put the drive back into the new computer? Quote

That never works out well. Don't even think about that.

In the eend, if it is a hardware problem Windows will not solve it anyway.the cd is clean... but it is the OEM verison of Windows XP Home with embedded SP2. it is not an upgrade

i dont know if trying to clean the ram will help because i already tried putting in the 512 mb stick from this computer into the new one.

i'll try it anyways just to see if it helps.
thanksi just thought i'd add this:
when i get as far as where it starts copying the files the install directory of windows, it gets up to 40% and freezes at a file called tsbyuv.dll

Solve : I have a folder in MY DOCUMENTS that I can not do?

Answer»

I have a file folder in MY DOCUMENTS titled INCOMPLETE. I can not view the contents, scan the contents for viruses, nor can I move, or delete the folder. When I try I get a message that states windows EXPLORER has a problem and must shut down. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Does anyone have any ideas? What do you use for spyware/adware/virus removal on a REGULAR BASIS? You need to make sure that system is clean first.I use SPYBOT for spyware, Norton antivirus, and AVG 7.1 for virus protection. Unfortunately, when I try to scan my system it stops when it gets to this particular file and will not go any further. You do not need to run two antivirus apps and can get lots of problems from this. Disable one pronto.

You should also do your scans in safe mode for BEST results, AFTER the programs are UPDATED. Don't forget to do this.

You might try a free download of Ewido, just to make sure.

http://www.ewido.net/en/

AdAware is free and is a good supplement to Spybot  (latest version of Spybot is 1.4 by the way)

We will get you squeeky clean.  Thank you, I will try your suggestions and get back to you.

Solve : C:\Program Files\Dell folder appears on startup?

Answer»

i have tried http://windowsxp.mvps.org/dellfolder.htm but this doesnt work. is there anyone that could help me as i suspect its a registry problemYou're just going to have to give some more information to GET some help. What are you seeing? Why do you think it is WRONG?  When did this start? and etc., of course. The procedure you gave should have worked.

You can try this to accomplish the same:

- Start>RUN - then type msconfig, then press Enter

-  under the Startup Tab look for anything similar to QuickSet, quickset.exe, DELL Support or DSAgnt.exe listed under Startup Item or Command.  Uncheck any items you find.  Close and restart.

You can undo this procedure by rechecking the boxes you changed previously.  Note and WARNING:  you can disable your entire PC by changing your startup items incorrectly.

Solve : I idiotically formatted my 200GB hard drive.?

Answer»

Well I idiotically formatted my 200GB hard drive.

I don’t want to tell you a story, just the point that I accidentally formatted it, but the good thing was I stopped it at the thirteen percent of the format and shut down the computer, so I think I can salvage the rest of the data.

I KNOW I lost a lot of data.

But I’m going to use some programs to recover it.

The point of the matter is that I cannot get the 200GB hard drive to load With my 80 gig hard drive that has the windows XP operating system.

and the tools I need to recover the data.

every time I try to load the 200GB hard drive with the 80 gig with the os.

I get an error “cannot load operating system”

the 80 gig will load by itself but as I said now with the 200 gig

I TRIED setting the jumpers to master and slave also cable select and I even tried setting the 80 gig on the primary IDE cable And the 200 gig On the secondary IDE cable.

*censored* I still Can’t get it to load of with my 80 gig hard drive Which has the software I need to recover the data on my 200 gig Maxtor, without getting the error

“cannot load operating system”

I think when I formatted the hard drive it Installed windows drivers and files that are conflicting with my 80 gig hard drives loading process.

It is there any programs bootable devices That I can use To force The 200 gig hard drive to load with the 80 gig which has the recovery programs and the os.
I thinbk your data is long gone. I think the MBR for that drive will be so scrambled, that even if it is still there it will be unrecoverable. What OS'es are involved?

So you changed jumper settings from where it was functioning correctly before? Or were there problems before that?

I think you have two drives competing for first boot as they are both VIEWED as primary partitions, and only one of those can be active at a time.

As always, I would suggest booting with a Linux Live CD to move the data to the healthy drive. Then we can solve the other problems.

http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=58

Let us know.  I appreciated your quick reply like I said I have tried every jumper settings possible

From master to slave cable select and setting my primary hard drive which is that 80 gig on the primary IDE cable and the 200 gig on the secondary IDE cable

and still getting the error

“ cannot load operating system”

This program that you’re recommending Inspire live 5.0

Is it an executable?

Does it installed on windows or does it create the recovery disk?

And there really isn’t much information about this program on the website

How does it work?

You burn it to CD. It is an ISO file so Nero, etc. can creat the CD. You just boot with that in your CD drive and it loads the operating system to run only from CD. It writes NO files to the hard drive (and will run fine in a machine with NO hard drive installed! It runs a little slower than what you would expect from an OS because it runs that way, but it is very dependable. It is the most Windows like of any Linux so it will be easy to navigate, etc.

Post back if any more questions, I will be around for a couple of hours.

Set the working drive to master and the funky drive to slave. Make sure all cables are plugged in correctly first.hey agine still have problums T_T by the way is Inspire live 5.0 like KNOPPIX? Quote

hey agine still have problums T_T by the way is Inspire live 5.0 like KNOPPIX?

It is another Linux distribution that runs from the CD. It that sense it is like Knoppix. If you originally set up this drive using the Maxtor MaxBlast disk (or other Maxtor tool), you may be able to repair the MBR and recover some data.  If you no longer have the floppy/CD, you can download it here: http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.8db0c3d6932ced37294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads

Also available are several freeware/shareware/commercial data recovery processes.

One is [email protected] UNDELETE, a trial version is available here (also Tucows & ZD):  http://www.active-undelete.com/

DellI appreciate everyone’s support I still have problems loading by 200GB Maxtor hard drive with my 80 gig western digital hard drive I’ve been at it for Just about a Week and am running out of resources and ideas to try.

I have checked jumper settings just about ten times and set jumper settings to every configuration possible.

I have tried connecting my 80 gig western digital hard drive to the primary IDE Cable and my 200 gig Maxtor hard drive to the secondary IDE cable hoping it would work but still get the error.

I have tried every Linux live CD possible but everyone gives me the same answer cannot detect hard drive and or well not show up in the hard disk drive area.

I have been recently noticing that the Maxtor 200 gig hard Drive overHeats when it is on for long periods of time so am Afraid if I leave it on for too long it will melt. I could literally cook an egg on it from How hot It Gets.

I am currently running windows XP Sp2 on my 80 GB hard drive and am wanting to use Easy Recovery Professional, R-Studio to recover my data and also Active UNDELETE That Dell4700 recommended ,but like I said i cannot access the hard drive.

Guys I think I lost my data for life. family pictures, family videos, massive amounts of programs, all gone ,but I Won’t give up I shall find a way to save the day.   :-/

You say that you started formattting the 200 GB drive. Is it partitioned? Could an OS be installed on a partition and the drive run on its own?

hey Mac

the hard drive was only used for storage purposes  it was not partitioned nor did it have a OS on it. I think when I Partly formatted it drivers and files somehow got installed onto it and are corrupted. I think it’s Conflicting with it being able to boot with my 80 gig western digital hard drive which has theXP pro os on it and the file I need to Recover the data.Hello agine

Recently someone told me that maybe I should unplug SATA Cable but leave the power Connector on it and power up the machine and then inserted the SATA Cable.

Solve : Add Network Printer?

I'm trying to add a printer to my laptop, which is connected WIRELESSLY to my network. The printer is set as shared on my desktop. When I click add printer, I choose the network option. Then on the next screen I choose browse for printer, then the results are just my two computer names and the workgroup name that I have set. No printers are displayed. Am I doing something wrong?ANYONE?Gee, it's only been 20 minuttes!

Click on the computer that is physically connected to the printer. What happens? Is that printer set up to be a shared item? Have you done any research on this?  Ever set this up before? Did you get material with your router? Tried google?

Start here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/getstarted/default.mspx
The Printer is setup to be shared. I haven't done any research but, I have done this before on my dad's network. Same situation. (with wireless and what not) And it worked just fine.Read through that MS article, then check out the router mannufacturer's web site. You didn't bother to MENTION what operating system or the equipment, by the way, so I can only offer generic answers.I'm running windows xp pro on both computers. The Printer is an HP PCS 1310 series. On another note, the comp that is directly hooked up to the printer is having INTERNET problems. It won't let me login into certain sites such as, Yahoo, or USBank. It says it was unable to establish a conncetion to the server... Any ideas on how to solve this?Sound like a separate issue that will need to be resolved first. How about POSTING a new thread in the Hardware Forum  or here (not both).

Can you get into Safe Mode (tap F8 at the end of POST)?

as for spyware.. I've got what they walked us through DOWNLOADING on campus.. it's Symantec Antivirus, I do believe.

sorry-- as i said, i have no idea what i'm doing! This may all be hardware. But it is a good idea to make sure your system is clean. Viruses are not the only bad things out there.

Solve : NTLDR PROB?

Answer»

Hi everyone
Would really appreciate if u could help with this prob
My computer won't boot saying "ntldr is missing" - I tried the recommended advice on this site ie/ insert the windows bootable CD and repair...but I couldn't even get to press "r" for repair b/cos it said 3 things when i entered the setup
1. file dmio.sys is corrupted
2.\i386\1_instl.nls could not be loaded; error code is 7
3.\i386\hal.dll couldnt not be loaded; error code is 4
for those reasons the windows setup couldn't continue

Does anyone know how to solve this prob??Was everything fine before this happened? If so, sounds like probably bad memory, CPU or hard drive. If you have more than 1 memory module, you can try using 1 at a TIME to see if your CD will LOAD. There are links at the top of the computer hardware forum for hard drive testing software. Saw a link somewhere on this site for free memory testing software, forget where though.

I use TuffTEST, a program that makes a bootable floppy that tests the memory, CPU, hard drive, and a few other things. Costs $10.00 though. There's a free version, but it's useless (very small max memory and hard drive limits). The free version might help you see if your system's in good enough shape to run the disk though. You'll FIND it if you do a web search.

I'm GUESSING it may be bad memory or CPU because your hard drive got corrupted, but it also seems your computer is corrupting the files from the boot CD.Did you boot to the cd?
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/part1.htmGood point... The advice I gave only applies if you're SURE you were booting from the CD, everything's hooked up right and the computer was working fine before. Otherwise, more likely a virus / software PROBLEM on your hard drive than a hardware problem. Never hurts to test what hardware you can as a first step to solving any problem though.http://www.memtest86.com/
this link is for a program called memtest86
scroll down and try downloading  the iso for a bootable cd-rom and id reccomend nero to burn it to cd ,, only problem is ,, youll have to do it on another pc that has a cd burner and nero ,, oh and when you use nero to burn it select the option to create or burn cd from .iso ,, i agree with royphil it does sound like a bad memory stick ,, could also be the memory bus on the motherboard tho.
if none of that makes sense take it to a proffessionalyup my computer was working fine before and i did boot the CD i went into set up to make sure it booted from the win xp cd - it's just i didnt get to repair anything as it said all the files (from my original msg) couldn't be loaded/corrupted
ill try the memory test thing and see if it works...and post if its still not working (i think it prob is a memory thing)
thnx~jjl:

Another possibility: The Windows CD may be dirty or scratched.  The i386 folder on the CD has the files needed to install Windows.  Dmio.sys is a driver or user mode component used to configure dynamic disks and volumes and perform I/O.  Of course, a bad hard drive or memory would also cause these errors, as Royphil mentioned.

Solve : possible virus/trojan/annoyance?

Answer»

For the past few weeks, Ive been having some trouble with computer.  About every 4-5 minutes, a command box with nothing in it.   In addition, a window will appear and say the following:
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Administrator\fs3fm.exe
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.  Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I can choose between 'Close' and 'Ignore'.  They both give me the same result: the box just disappears.  In addition, if I was to leave my computer idle, these boxes would pile up...I'm talking about 75-90 if I leave the computer for a while.  I have run several different types of virus scans, and all seem to MISS it.

Side note: the 'fs3fm.exe' part is not always the same.  There are other names.  Has anyone heard of this, and what is this cure? Please help! THANKS for your time.AdAware

Solve : what is pop3/smtp, I'm having trbl?

Answer»

I have windows xp on my pc. I have software that I use with my digital camera to send pictures in my email. When TRYING to send these pictures I get an error message something to the effect that message not sent pop3/smtp error. What is it and how do I fix thanks for the help...Does your REGULAR e-mail work OK? Are you on dialup or cable/DSL? Who is your ISP? What kind of software? Does it have a name? How big are these image files? More info is always helpful...ok i take it you dont use OUTLOOK express or microsoft outlook ( prolly a good thing ).
ok for one when your downloading photos from your camera to your pc dont select the option to email them. this will only confuse you. just select the option to copy or move the photos to your pc. Here once they are on your pc in a FOLDER you created for them. open your email up and create a new email message , then use the feature to attach files and attach what ever photos or files to the email you want.

Seeing you dont understand these basic internet PROTOCOLS i aint going into them too much but they are just protocols for use on the internet in the use of sending and recieving email. pop3 for sending email and smtp for recieving ,, When you configure outlook express the first time you are asked to provide these things which your ISP can provide you with. ie. the names of the pop3 and smtp servers that your ISP uses for providing email.

I hope this helps.

Solve : Booting...again...?

Answer»

Just built my new pc. and this morning windows xp pro arrived. YaY!! i thort.. I slammed it in at the "insert system disc and PRESS enter" screen and it was ticking away fine. The screen came up saying it was copying all sorts of files such as the PS2 bus drivers etc.. and then it got me to the screen saying "press enter to install windows xp pro, press "r" o repair... press f3 to quit.." So i press enter and nothig happend. Again and again nothig happened it was deffinatly frozen. I switched it off and began again. Only this time it wouldnt boot! It couldnt even be bothered to chek for boot up devices!! i was waiting for it to say "booting from HDD....failed, booting from Floppy....failed, booting from CDROM.....BINGO! but unfortunatly it never did. i checked through the bios and all is well. What the hecks going on?
Help would be much appriciated. Thanky
Ash ^^It will not boot from the HDD unless an OS is installed

Make certain all heatsinks and fans are in working ORDER and firmly seated. yubi...... Well first of all , we will make sveral assumptions ......
The first is ....... that you have assembled your new computer correctly ........
Before you " SLAMMED IT IN " and had no O/S installed .....did you get proper display from the bios ......?
The second is ...... Is your Winxp pro cd a authenic M/S original or a copy and is it bootable ....?

If the answer to both of these questions is YES .......  Then the procedure to follow would be .

Enter bios and set the pc to boot from the CD drive .......save the setting and exit .
OPEN the cd drive and carefully place the bootable original M/S cd in the tray and CLOSE it.
REBOOT the pc and Win XP Pro will begin to load .

Hope this helps

dl65  Without a POST screen you could have a hardware problem.
Re-slam it together gently, if that doesn't fix it then test your RAM.Slamming it together does not make for a happy system. Take your time, and make sure it is done right. Remeber that old adage about "do it right or do it twice" (or more).

Solve : [HELP] PHYSICAL MEMORY DUMPIN" REPEATEDLY [HELP!!]?

Answer»

I DON"T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. I got woken up at 2 in the monrin'.... to have my cousin tellin' me my comupter doesn't work... doesn't wanna start... so  i come in here.. NOTHIN" HAPPENS... it keeps rebootin' after it shows the Windows XP thing.. with the lil loadin' bar at the bottom...

Now... My computer has a recovery system INSIDE OF IT... but for some reason... it didn't wanna work, I got into it. then it reseted again... so I used the cds that I made... the recovery... re-formatted the comp.. but since then... it's been actin' wierd...

I got a Gateway, with a media center and stuff... Windows XP SP2... or somethin' like that... need more info tell me..

Now a week before the whole thing crashed it talked about physical memory bein' dumped, the screen went blue said if this was the first time reset... so I did...

It worked for awhile... till that night...

Now I'm on it right now... and I used to be able to run ... as many programs as I wanted before it started actin' slower... Now I can barely have a messanger and the browser window open... I tried to watch a movie on Windows Media Player... it skips and freezes... like if the dvd was dirty... fine I could deal with that.. if it's the lens.. but I got some music on my computer and I play that, and it does the same... now it NEVER did this before but now it is... the driver thing... I tried updatin' them... no luck... I tried re-formattin'... it moves a lil faster... but my physical memory is still low...

What browser do I use? Firefox... I know it takes up alot... but before it didn't matter.. Now the *censored* thing barely runs... any help?

On a side note... I had a dvd burner... and I used to back up my dvd's then all of a sudden... I was goin' to back up a copy of the movie Blow... I mean I own the original but it's FILLED WITH SCRATCHES... when I tried to burn it to a dvd.. nothin'... it don't pick up dvds no more.. it just stays green like it's readin' it... I tried blank dvd's, resetin', andd regular dvds... nothin'... it's an External DVD burner by the way...

Anyways... the DVD burner, I ain't really worried but if you got some advice for that, hit me up.... but the physical memory dump is what I'm concerned.. if it's about the physical memory FINE... I won't use firefox... but even when firefox isn't on... it still.. skips and freezes...

PLEAAAAAAASSSSSSE HELP ME...

You guys are my last hope... I went to forum to forum. and I will admit... warez forum, and so forth... asked for help and nothin'... people tell me things that I already know to do... but maybe you guys got an extra step or somethin'... if you need extra info tell me how to get it, and I'll get it for ya...

Ok thanks if you can byeCarry out each step to the letter then come back clean.

Fed if you're awake give me some help on Ccleaner

i can give you some help if you want too

perhaps it would be nice if you give us the details of your os (start=>run=>type [highlight]WINVER[/highlight])Were you regularly running any adware/spyware/virus programs? i so, what? With your computer habits and expertise you would be foolish not to. No telling what sites you and your cousin have been to, or what has been downloaded or clicked on.

Proper maintenance and safety is required with a Windows machine. Stick around and you'll learn plenty.

That's what comes up when it shows... Now I know about spywares and everythin'... I believe I had that bulletproof spyware... Uh huh, anyways... I'm runnin' everythin' like I said... everythin' seems to be runnin' better... but all the scans have brought up *censored*....You may want to TEST your RAM. Free downnload at www.memtest86.com

Run for a couple of hours on each stick, then all together.I forogt if I mentioned this.... but I'm usin' Fire fox... does that matter? I know it takes alot of stuff... but still know what i mean? and that ram tester.... you think that would be it?Well, it's free and it would rule out one factor. Sounds like it's worth it to me.... Ok ok... how about Norton Anti-Virus... Shuold I install it and run it too or is it just an overrated anti-virus?Use AVG Free. Besides free, it will not use all of your system resources to keep you safe.

You should use those other free tools that Fed posted as well. No reason not to.I did.... no doubt... but I'm just askin' is Norton really that good? or not good neough?

OooooOoo Check this, I was usin' that ewido. and I found somethin'... it was in my start up thing... it was just a blank thing.. nothin' at all.... behind it.. and it said GO to the registry and I did... and it was in my registry... it looked like a lil folder it had a blank on the name, the place and the path... think that could've been it?I personally would NEVER use Norton, and getting RID of it if you install is sometimes difficult. It tis like a virus unto itself.

You probably found one nasty, but I fear there is more at work here.

Solve : How to make a network with an internet-connection?

Answer»

Hye everbody,
So here's my problem, I purchased broadband and now my family wants to use it, so I need to make a network with an internet-connection (with windows XP)
Could someone send me a guide how to do this ? Please!! It is very urgent.

Information about the network to build :

  • Connection to internet: [glb]W-LAN[/glb]
  • Network connection: [glb]LAN[/glb]
  • Internet-connection:  [glb]broadband  [/glb]
  • Software: [glb]Windows XP  [/glb](SP2 my computer) to connect with SP1 (other computer)
Quote
Hye everbody,

  • Software: [glb]Windows XP  [/glb](SP2 my computer) to connect with SP1 (other computer)

i don't think that you can link (in windows) a sp1 to a sp2, upgrade the sp1 to sp2Here is all you ever cared to know about networks: http://www.huntel.net/kjbisanz/lan/intro.htm

Read it, memorize it, apply it. And there is a quiz at the end. Now, go forth and PACKET switch.Sorry guys this wasn't any help !!
I installed SP2 on the other computer and I still have the still problems !! Then I read through all of the other website and still didn't find any help !!!
Please send me a guide !!

This is how I did it :

  • [glb]1.[/glb]
I connected the computers with a LAN cable (doesn't matter which !!).
  • [glb]2.[/glb]
On both computer I installed the IP-Protokoll and set it on resolving the IP-Address automatically.
  • [glb]3.[/glb]
I made Windows do the work, with the network-wizard. Chose that I have the internet-connection, gave it a name e.g Internet.
  • [glb]4.[/glb]
At last I chose that the sevice isn't being done on the other computer and clicked "Finish".
    [glb]
  • (5. Restarted !)[/glb]
In the wizard, did you select 'this computer connects to the internet directly' or did you choose more then choose 'this computer connects to a home or office network' or something LIKE that, I don't remember exactly.I chose " THis computer connects to the Internet with the free internet connection of an other computer in the the network" .
(I just tranlated this, because I use a german Windows version !)Oh yeah I forgot.. The network works, but the connection to internet doesn't work for the others !! Did you connect both computers to a router via cat5 or did you hook one comouter to the router and the other computer to the first computer? A good rundown of parts would be nice. More info about your setup would be nice too.So again :

Information about the network to build :

Connection to internet: W-LAN  with router (only my computer)

Network connection: LAN

Internet-connection:  broadband

Software: Windows XP    SP2 (both computers)

Parts:
both onboard network cards !
LAN-Cable (doesn't matter which, because they all make a network !)

So you are not connecting the other computer to the router, just connecting to the other computer?Yes but the internet needs to work, but it doesn't !If your computer is hooked to the router and the router to the modem and the moden to your cable or phone line, and you are note GETTING the internet, it could be the computer not configuring with the router or the router not configuring with the modem. The manuals you should have gotten with each will tell you how to configure them.I meant that the inernet on the other computer in the network doesn't work !! I'm using the internet OTHERWISE I wouldn't be writing this !! :-/Are you connecting your other computer to your computer using a crossover cable?Jeronimo_Mc_Kinsley ....well , I dont know exactly what it is your trying to acheive, but if it was me and I wanted to connect 3 computers to the net using one internet connection .....I would do the following ..

Each computer requires a ethernet adapter .....(either wired or wireless )
1- 4 port router    ........ and again either wired or wireless

Then the connection is simple ......  incoming internet connection goes into the broadband modem ......

From the output of the modem to the imput of the router .

From the output of the 4 port router to each of the 3 computers via their ethernet adapter ( using a CAT 5 cable or wireless if the router and ethernet adapters are wireless )

It doesnt matter which operating system is installed on the various pcs .......they are all now connected to the net .

I think this is what your trying to do.

Solve : How do I delete Palm software??

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this QUESTION but...

I have a Palm Pilot Zire 31 that I downloaded some software into. Does anyone know how I can delete these files? I can't find the software anywhere when I BRING up the Palm Desktop, all I see is the usual Memos, contacts, etc.

BTW, I have Windows XP if that matters.

Thanks to anyone who can provide any help. Try connecting the PDA directly to the PC without the hot-sync cradle, it may show up as a removeable device allowing you to delete the files you want removed.

If these are programs you installed, remove them using the PalmOne quick INSTALLER.Hmm...okay :-?

However, the only METHOD I have of connecting the two is to use the hotsinc cable. Also, when I go into the installer mode, I don't see any of the items I had previously installed...Does the PDA not come with a USB or IrFA connection? The PDA connects to the pc via its hot sinc cable which plugs into the back of the computer via the USB port.Yes, but some PDA's have the ability to be connected through USB or Infa-Red without a Hotsync cradle.

If this is the case, you might be able to remove programs that you COPIED on there without the use of the Palm software installer.

Sorry, i posted the above before i read your last reply.

Most events in Event Viewer have a link that you may select to access the knowledge base article at Microsoft's website.  Have you tried clicking on the link?

No there is no link and when I send the event to MS there is usually a page that pops up that says they are looking at it.
Appears to be a device driver but I have not been able to determine which one.

Good observation.  WDM = Windows Driver Model.

My best guess is ati2mtag.dll is the driver that is missing or corrupted or not compatible with Windows XP.

I'll look up the 0x000000D1 stop error and get back to you.

It was the only Windows XP related knowledge base article for the 0x000000D1 stop error in the three links of my previous reply.

If you are able to boot to the desktop in Safe MODE With Networking, try downloading and installing Service Pack 2 for Windows XP using Windows Update.
I really appreciate all your help and suggestions.
I just built this machine and I did purchase Windows XP from New Egg with SP2 onboard.
Since the driver issue seems to be ATI related I uninstalled all ATI from the machine.
On the reboots between the removals the machine booted the first time and faster...if this machine could get faster...lol
I then reinstalled the Catalyst 5.13 and did a reboot...so far all seems good.
Did not get a reboot after all was loaded as I was getting previously.

Next task is to update the chipset drivers, but I may wait a bit for that, this current issue has taken all day.

I appreciate all the help and trouble you have gone through.
Thanks for your time and I hope this is the last of this issueNo problem!  Knowledge is worthless if i can't give it away.

Take it easy, and God bless,

Solve : How to disable Windows Logon window?

I just wiped and reloaded an old Gateway 400c with Windows 98SE with the system recovery disks.

How can I get rid of (bypass, not see it, etc,) the Windows Logon box that appears at startup.

I tried the search FUNCTION here but it did not show any results.

Thanks,Thanks for the reply. I will print this off and try it after while.

I am trying to make access as easy as possible on this computer. I am giving it to my sister who just became disabled due to serious heart problems.

She is only 53.

She has never used a computer for recreation.

Thanks,Depending on the nature and SERIOUSNESS of her disability, you may want to consider some recommendations and tools provided by Microsoft and others:  http://www.microsoft.com/enable/

A good comparison of accessibility features across Windows operating systems is also given here:  http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/chartwindows.aspx

You can use these tables as more or less a checklist of options you can use for her potential DIFFICULTIES.  You can also get a free subscription to their accessibility newsletter.

I have several years experience with this type disability, so if you'd like more information or recommendations, let me know.

DellThank you for the caring replies.

I was able to get this issue lined out.

She has a lot of TIME on her hands now so I thought I could help her out with some NEW avenues for keeping her mind busy, learning and enjoyment as well.

Solve : MS CONFIG, NEED HELP!?

Answer»

HEY GUYS.
I HAVE WINDOWS XP HOME. I RECENTLY WAS PLAYING WITH THE START UP TAB IN MS CONFIG, HOPING TO ACHIEVE FASTER BOOT-UPS AND LESS CRASHES.  ALTHOUGH EVERYTHING IS RUNNING MUCH SMOOTHER SINCE, WHEN I BOOT UP, THE WINDOWS UTILITY MANAGER WINDOW POPS UP AND INSTRUCTS ME TO CHANGE BACK TO THE STANDARD START UP. AGAIN, EVERYTHING IS RUNNING FINE, CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS? I'VE CHECKED NUMEROUS FORUMS AND NO-ONE SEEMS TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM EXCEPT ME, OF COURSE. THANX FOR THE HELP, NOT A COMPUTER EXPERT.When you say "utility manager" are you referring to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Accessibility>Utility Manager?

After you remove startup items from MSCONFIG, the next time you boot up you'll get a MESSAGE saying that the startup routine has been changed. You need to put a check in the box that says "Do not alert me" at the bottom of that message.
IT WORKED. I'VE BEEN STARING SO HARD I MUST HAVE OVER=LOOKED IT.   THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

So what you're saying is that when you launch MSN Messenger, it won't connect to the Net, and when you VISIT the Hotmail website, it won't load?

Did you have MSN set to automatically connect to the Net when you launched the program? Perhaps now that setting has been changed and you NEED to manually put in your password and click "connect".

If that's not the case, try reinstalling MSN Messenger.

With Hotmail, try deleting your temporary Internet files. Also make sure that cookies are enabled.

When I try to click on My Documents, or My Computer within this browse box, or even go up one level, or select a pic which is showing on that particular browse box - everything freezes, and I have to Ctrl-alt-del (even tho the Task Manager shows everything running)

I am well aware that I can send a file attachment, and do not have a problem with it, but with TRYING to insert a pic - it freezes up every time.    I took Picasso2 off, no difference, and I'm not surprised, as I RUN Picasso2 with the other 2 pcs no problem.  As far as I know - this laptop is similarly set up to the other laptop - tho there could be something I am not aware of

Can anyone help PLEASE?

I would suspect that there's some other process running on your computer that is interfering with Outlook Express' ability to browse out to find pictures to insert. This process may or may not be malware.

First I would look in Start, All Programs, STARTUP and delete anything that you don't need to automatically run when you boot Windows XP.

Then I would install the three main anti-spyware programs and let them see if they can find and eliminate any malware on your computer:

Then update your virus scanner and do a scan to make sure that you're virus-free.

It is OK to use the PM feature to contact a member about a specific question, but don't expect a response, unless you have already established that relationship. Our expertise is dispayed in the forums.

The reasons are so you get a variety of solutions into a problem you are having. Some may have heard of a solution, others may actually have accomplished what you are trying to do and show you their method.

The other advantage of a forum is to keep the information factual. If someone tells you something misleading or blatantly false (and that could HARM your MACHINE) then others will immediately expose the errors being made and suggest other ALTERNATIVES. If you are continuing a 1:1 communication that both parties are AGREEABLE to, then of course a PM is good for that.

So remember Safe Information is what we are about (and the occasional humor of course!)  Remember we are not paid, and we post as our time and interest allows.
