Solve : ntoskrnl.exe message?

Answer»

A couple of days ago I changed my broadband network connection to be used through a Belkin 802.11G router. That is working fine however my Sygate firewall is giving me a continual notice that an ntoskrnl.exe application has been blocked from accessing the network. I haven't a clue what this is referring to and despite my trying to tell Sygate to stop bugging me with this message, it won't. Also since the installation of the router my webcam has STOPPED functioning.

I think the message is somehow linked to the router but I can't figure out how and what to do. Any ideas?
LOOK in Sygate>Applications>ntoskrnlThanks for the try. I had checked the box to allow this application but I still get the alert. I tried using the address as well in the advanced section of the sygate option list but to no avail.

I get this alert-"the application NT Kernel etc. has not been allowed to access the network every so often perhaps every 10 minutes or so. There seems to be no other apparent problem.Try Sygate>Options>Security>Reset all fingerprints.
I don't tick 'Enable dll authentication. You can get rid of it by going to TOOLS>options>CHECK hide notificaton messages.
Should be ABLE to do the trick.
Post back if you need more.

Solve : internet log ins on dell?

Answer»

i have a new dell dimension desktop with dial up internet from earthlink. it works fine except when i try to log into my msn e-mail account, or any other on line form for that matter.
with the firefox browser, the message "the conection has failed" or some variant comes up, and with internet explorer, it goes to "page not found" page. i can access my e-mail from other computers but not this one., it also refused the connection for logging in to ebay, yourmusic.com, and trying to get a from for a passport. please help.Have you tried changing the connection settings of Internet Explorer.

  • 1. Either right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and choose Properties [glb]or[/glb] open Internet Explorer, click on Options and open Internet Options.
  • 2. Continue by clicking on Connections, then click on LAN settings and uncheck everthing. [glb](Not relevant for a dial-up connection !!)[/glb]

The labels COULD be different, because I use a German Windows version !!  THANKS for the advice, but all the boxes are alreadt unchecked there. i don't no if this is a security ISSUE, a bug, or something else but it really inhibits my use of the internet, any other ideas/Have you checked for Spyware/adware/virii?I'm sure I read somewhere last week that earthlink had a big problem with spam or malware being sent out to the point that many large servers were blocking earthlink completely.
I thought it would have been fixed by now.
Can you try going through a different server as a test?
Can you try using a proxy server as a test?

EDIT:  I see you can access using other computers, is that using earthlink or another ISP?
If it's by using earthlink then forget all of the above^

Then RUN the normal scans.I am able to log into forums like this one, but not into thingslike ebay, or msn hotmail. I've tried with internet exploreer and with mozilla firefox. whenever I attempt on firefox it says"the connection has been refused by ----", so could that be that msn and ebay are blocking access by earthlink users?
I can access msn through a different computer at work that uses broadband though.

how do I set up a proxy connection, or use a differnt server.if you think that would help?http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/index_en.htmlin regards to the earthlink security thing, i am able to access log-ins on an imac running MACOS 8.6, which uses the same earthlink connection.

I downloaded that jap program, but it would not start the anonimity feature, despite my firewalls being turned off. It dousn't appear to work in terms of the current problem, ALTHOUGH it does seem to be a viable program.

Solve : Unmountable Boot Volume - Help!?

Answer»

Heya,

Getting the BSOD - Unmountable_Boot_Volume... STOP: 0x0000000ED (0x86D6SA88, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

Having searched on google, it says just repair windows XP...

Now, the tricky part...

So I place in the windows XP CD, PRESS R, then it tells me it can't FIND the hard drive?!

Having gone into the BIOS - it doesn't recognise any onboard IDE Drives but recognises by 160gb Sata (?) drive...

Any help would be greatly recieved..

Sush. The important details needed are your hardware setup and what happened PRIOR to this.Nothing NEW installed... Nothing wrong prior to turning computer off.

As for hardware setup.. Bit of a novice, what would you like to know? It's a Dell Dimesion.. SATA internal storage.. Haven't changed anything... ?Reset your NVRAM. From the F2 setup screen, TURN on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock. Then hold down Alt and hold in e until it starts to beep. It will beep 5-6 times, Then reboot and see what happens. You have 1 or 2 IDE devices? That commmand doesn't appear to work?..You have all 3 keyboard lights lit and holding down Alt + E does nothing? What MODEL Dimension?Correct, nothing happens... Dimension 9150....

Thanks for trying to help by the way.. Much appreciated

Solve : 'ulipart' & 'qwishell' files when "shutti?

Answer»

When shutting down (XP) I keep getting dialogue boxes that say 'ulikpart.exe' and 'qwishell.exe'  - DLL initiation failed.

In ORDER to shut down I have to OK these boxes many TIMES - eventually they cease to appear and Windows closes after about 3 minutes.

I have tried to find these files on my computer and on the web and they do not show up.

Any ideas - they are a REAL pain in the ..... !Can you confirm the spelling on these? It's highly unusual for an error message to turn up absolutely nothing on a Google search.

Have you checked for viruses and spyware?

Solve : Dumb Question??

Answer»

Where is Windows stored? If I install a new hard drive will another version of windows be added? I bought a computer to upgrade and sell and want it to be clean/new as possible.Windows is stored on the C: drive (local disc C:, hard disk C: etc.).
It's not just one file but all of the files that you see, apart from your own personal files and the application files from any programs installed.

If you are adding a new hard drive you have to add your OS to it.
Was it an OEM system, or a home built one?
Quote

A new hard-drive will be blank.

Which make and model of computer do you have and does it have any recovery CDS with it?

Which operating system are you referring to?
It's a Compaq Presario 5441. It has Windows 98 on it. I am REPLACING the hard drive before I try to sell because the current one is noisy. I was hoping that a new hard drive would have a better version of Windows. But now I understand that it won't. But will the computer work when I install the new hard drive? And will Windows 98 still come up? But I am curious as to where the c drive is. I always thought the c drive is the hard drive. As it is a Compaq it may have a hidden Restore partition, which I think is usually labelled D:

Is this the specification?

Compaq Presario 5441 - Micro tower - 1 x K6-2 450 MHz - RAM 64 MB - HD 1 x 4.3 GB - CD - Win98 - Monitor : 15" CRT Quote
... But I am curious as to where the c drive is. I always thought the c drive is the hard drive.

86:

Windows creates partitions on every hard drive when it is installed and gives each partition a drive letter.  (A) and (B) are the drive letters reserved for floppy disk drives, (C) is reserved for the first partition of the first hard drive.  (D) is often the letter given to the first optical drive (e.g., a CD or DVD drive).  Most computers have one hard drive with one partition, seen as Local Disk (C) in My Computer.  When you add another hard drive, it will be given the next available letter of the alphabet (most likely (E)).

You can only have one version of Windows 9x (e.g., Windows 98) installed on a computer.  When you add the second hard drive, Windows 98 will give it a drive letter and let you SAVE files to it (that is, if you have formatted the hard drive with FAT32).  The hard drive must be connected and jumpered properly.  If you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself, have a computer repair shop do it for you.

Once you have the second hard drive ready to use, you may have Windows 98 move the My DOCUMENTS folder to it to save space for Windows to work on the original hard drive.

Let us know if you need more help,
Doc

BTW: Windows 98 is stored in the WINDOWS folder on Local Disk (C).
The short answer is no hard drive is sold with Windows on it. You will have to buy a new (or used) copy to install, or maybe get the system restore to work (and that is a big IF).

Solve : XP will not enter standby or hibernate?

Answer»

Whenever I try to go into standby, I get the 'preparing to standby' screen, then it goes black and just stays there, totally frozen.  I have to do a HARD reset every time.  Hibernate is slightly different, that freezes on the 'preparing to hibernate' screen.

I am on XP SP2 (though it made no difference when I reverted to SP1), P4 2.8, 1 Gb RAM, 40 GB HDD, Compaq Presario 2500 series laptop.

I still get the same issue with NO devices attached to any USB ports.  I have no deeply controversial software running on my system that I didn't have months AGO when everything was peachy, not even a flashy 3D screensaver.  I have a nasty suspicion this is a BIOS issue but cannot be sure.

Any advice at all (apart from don't buy Compaq) would be greatly appreciated!Have you got any support from Compaq at all? Is this a known issue on a google search? Is there an updated BIOS for that machine? Some have ALSO had problems with BIOS updates!

Solve : help INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE?

Answer»

I maintain our computers at my workplace, which run Win2K pro. I had to replace a motherboard in a Socket 462 Athlon machine which had a bad CMOS (CMOS checksum error on boot---tried new battery, cleared CMOS, tried fresh OS install, etc., finally found a broken cap on the board, thought maybe that was it). I replaced the board with a PC chips K7 board, VIA KT266A chipset, and upgraded from PC133 (legacy on the old board) to PC266 DDR memory. On first boot, I set the Date/Time, configured the bios settings, and then tried to boot Win. I received the BSOD and a STOP error with what looks like a memory  address, and the message INACCESSIBLE_BOOT _DEVICE. I double checked the BIOS config, drive cables, jumper settings on the board and the drive (only one hard drive), tried different cables, tried a different power SUPPLY, tried to repair with the Win2K disk (recovery console and automatic), ran chkdsk on the drive, all to no avail. What is this? Is it a bad boot record? I ruled out a VIRUS (no boot problems before except CMOS checksum error on occasion). I was able to log in to the installation at a PROMPT, but I really don't know where to go from there. I ended up reformatting, and reinstalling the OS, but I'd rather know how to repair it. I've seen this before on my own Win2K machine. Any ideas? Thanks. The problem since WinME is that the OS installs themselves got better and better at picking up all drivers especially MBoard drivers.
Since none of these are universal when you swap out a MBoard normally the HDD won't boot at all as it is looking at specific drivers that were'nt designed to run on the new MBoard.
You can try this workaround designed for XP but it just might work on Win2k...
Back up your data first and ignore the directions for the new installation. As you have already made the swap just delete the items he suggests and re-boot...Windows should then search for the newer drivers for the new board and re-install them.

Good Luck but again No Guarantees.

Solve : Copy Word File to Disc?

Answer»

I want to transfer a word file to a disc which I do not want copied or printed from. Is this possible? Also, the file will have a PHOTO that I PLACED on the page from clip art.

If it is possible? If so, what kind of disc should I buy and what steps do I TAKE to do the transfer from the word file to the disc.

I have windows XP.

Thanks,

Bubba Daddy . . . computer flunkyBy default all files will have at least the read attribute if not then no-one will be able to read it.

You would need to have XP Pro and SET the security defaults so everyone only has read attributes, they would still be able to copy the file to their system but not change it. In TERMS of stopping them printing it, I don't think you could stop that unless you have some special 3rd party application. Nothing I know of available though..sorry.

Even Microsoft discs can have data copied to a hard drive without special software, it's just part of the function of reading the discs. Thanks for your response.

I understand that the file would have to be copied to their system as a "read only" file, but I do not want them to be able to make another disc of the file.

As to stopping them from printing the file, it would appear that this would not be a realistic goal of mine.

Thanks again, your input. It is appreciated. Some useful reading:

Solve : IEEE1394 (FireWire)device not detected?

Answer»

My Compaq Presario has two IEEE1394 ports (front & rear) to which I am attempting to connect an external hard drive.  My Windows 98SE system does not detect this device even though if I connect it to the USB port, it will.  Anyone have experience fixing this? MS Article 221823 directly addresses the problem, however, their instructions point to options that do not appear within my Device Manager, i.e., changing settings to SUPPORT Non-Compliant Device. Was 98 the original OS on this machine with firewire? Did it ever work?Yes, as to original operating system.  Never had occasion to use/try the 1394 ports before this INSTANCE.  The device has been tested on ANOTHER computer (Windows XP) and is detected, so I know it's not the device or the cable.Have you had a look in the bios settings (press del at start up) to SEE if the firewire is switchable in the bios

Solve : password protect folder on XP?

Answer»

Hi,

I know that the following question has been posted under the TOPIC called issue on file sharing permission by myself. However, i decided to ask from a different point of view.

I was wondering if this is feasible on XP. In a network, i have a fileserver say Comp_A, two other computers say Comp_B and Comp_C. The fileserver Comp_A has a folder that is to be shared in the network. This MEANS that anyone on either Comp_B or Comp_C can access to the folder on Comp_A. At the moment, everything works perfectly.

However, recently it comes to my attention that i do need to password-protect the folder on Comp_A so that whenever USER on either Comp_B or Comp_C trying to access the folder they would be prompted for a password to unlock the folder provided a correct password is given and thereafter they can open the folder as normal.

Is it possible to do it this way? or are there any third party software that might be able to do this? any ideas are welcome.

your help is greatly appreciated and look forward to hearing from youYou can assign accesss password to folders for users. As you know those users logged in comps B and C with appropriate rights and permissions can access that folder.

But from the COMPUTER with one user logged in, Windows XP asks for username and password of the computer which tries to connect. (in the case A asks for username and password of B/C if they have different usernames)

I haven't heard sth alike with your suggestion.

Solve : Scandisk/Defrag not working...Help!!?

Answer»

Quote

I am now starting day two of sitting at this love-hate machine trying and praying that I'll figure it out.

Two nights ago, I downloaded Spyware Doctor and ran a full scan.  Found 169 infections.

I browsed them and quarantined since most looked harmful and didn't appear to me to be operational necessities.

I haven't been able to run a scandisk since.

It says programs are writing to the drive. I have gone under Ctrl+Alt+Del and closed everything except Explorer.

I went into SAFE Mode and was unable to run it there.  In safe mode, I received a HINT, but don't know what to do with it.  It said something about a System File Error with mmmixer.dll.   Do I need to repair this? How?

When I tried to do a defrag, its response was that there were errors that needed to be repaired first.

I have emailed Spy Doc twice, with no response. So glad I spent $30 for their HELP!

Really hope someone can help me here.

OK download CCLeaner and run it over your system to remove junk files such as index.dat which can impede ScanDisk. Disconnect from the internet and uninstall Spyware Doctor AND your anti-virus program.

Re-boot into safe mode and see if ScanDisk will run.

If not run the Drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette over the drive to check for errors.

You can also run scandisk from a bootdiskette...

A:\>scandisk /all /surface , which takes about 1 hour per 10 GB of drive space.

Which operating system are you using? '98. So how old is the computer, drive, etc. ? Quote
I did a reinstall, but when I try to access it, my pc completely freezes and I have to reboot.  Also, since the last time I was in safe mode to try earlier suggestion, my screen is all messed up, the fonts are wrong, the colors are goofy and I can't restore them.  Looks like I'm still in safe mode....but not.  Not certain about a repair in the add/remove program.  I'll take a look.
Put in a call to MS for help, but they were running some UPDATE and they'll be closed by the time it's done...told to call back tomorrow.  So still hoping for a trail of hope to recover at this forum.  But am willing to pay MS for their help at this point.

Try running MemTest86 and making sure that yor RAM modules are properly seated as it sounds as if you may be suffering from general data corruption.

It might be better to pay for a new hard drive 7,200 rev/min with 8 MB drive buffer and some more RAM to bring it up to 512 MB than to waste money on MS.
And some new, 80 wire, screened IDE cables...  Thanks for all the advice....a lot of it over my head though.  My concern about wiping out Spyware Doc is that it has quarantined files that I obviously need....if I GET rid of it or clean up around it and then get rid of it, won't I lose those important files?  I would think this could be basic....my problem is getting SpyDoc to come up.  I reinstalled, but my pc freezes when I try to access that one.
Still trying to get a Tech from SpyDoc to call....Ha!  Lowsy help from them...

Solve : CHANGE WINDOWS KEY?

Good Morning everyone i am calling from Greece. At least i found a forum with MANY friends and a lot of Informations about computers.
I have a problem. I have the support in a company which they have one computer with windows xp professional.
This computer has illegal windows and the boss of the company bought a new one with license. The problem is that in the illegal windows has alot of programs (logistics) and i can not make a format
Question how can i change the key from the registry without MAKING format, because i want to update windows and i cannot
Thanks everyone who will answer to meMarine:

You should:

1. Back up any important files to a CD or to another computer on the office network.  Everything in the shared folder, for example, will be deleted.

2. Reinstall Windows XP using the legitimate CD.

3. You will then have to immediately activate Windows online (or by calling Microsoft), as you will be unable to use the computer in any mode but Safe Mode till the OS is activated.

4. Reinstall any programs that no longer WORK after the reinstallation.

Solve : Justifying text?

Answer»

I have written 37,000 words of a memoir on Microsoft Word. I have to send the disc to a printer for a self-publish book.  The text is "ragged" at the RIGHT hand edge. It needs to be "justified" so that it is straight on both left and right. I now think I know how to do this... if I was starting a new document.
But I don't  know how to convert the existing 37,000 word document in one go. I don't want to tinker unassisted in case I wipe the whole thing out - months of work.
Are there special keyboard keys to press so that I can re-format it?
Sorry to be a bore, but I can't find the solution.

Solve : XP Repair/Reinstall?

Answer»

Win XP Home. Full version cd.  256mb ram.  20g hdd.  Proc unknown.

Am unable to do a repair to XP.  At bootup I get a message like "We apologise for the inconvenience etc..." and the following options are available:

"Start Windows Normally" "Try Last KNOWN Good Configuration" "Safe Mode" "Safe mode with Cdrom Support" etc...

No matter which option is selected the system locks up.

Amended Bios to boot from cdrom first and got this message:
19540mb disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi (MBR)

C:     Partition unknown

Pushing Enter to install produces the following:
The partition is either too full, damaged, not formatted or formatted with an incompatible file system.  To continue installing Windows, Setup must format the partition.

C: Partition [unknown]    19540mb (19539mb free) on 19540mb disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi (MBR)

Tried booting from a W98 bootdisk and running I386\Winnt.exe from the XP cdrom and got the following:

An INTERNAL Setup error has occurred.  Could not find a place for a swapfile.  Setup cannot continue.  Press Enter to exit.

Is there any remote chance that a recovery is possible from these problems without formatting.  The drive is not partitioned.  I have replugged cables on hdd and mobo.  Not yet slaved the hdd in another pc.   The problems appear to have come up after an aborted attempt to install AdAware.  Friend cannot come up with better info and does not remember any funnies occurring.

TIA

V...Virginia:

Some possibilities: You have too many files on the hard drive to reinstall Windows, or a boot sector virus has damaged the boot sector or MBR, or the hard drive itself has SUFFERED a mechanical failure.

We need more info. to determine the cause before we may determine the cure: Has the hard drive been making any strange metallic pinging sounds or grinding noises?  Why did you try a repair installation (were you getting error messages or did the computer just fail to boot)?  Do you hear any beep tones when you first start the computer (if so, how many)?

Let us know,
Doc

Thanks pcdoc.

No report of noise from the hdd - no evidence of head-crash.  No beep code.  The on-screen messages listed in my first post were the only indication that something had gone wrong.

Vague possibility that the MBR may have been corrupted but AVG (free version), Zone Alarm (free version) were running and I'm assured they were up-to-date.  Also in use was SpyWareBlaster.  A UPS was used and a voltage/temperature monitoring prog was running (Intel Active Monitor).  The pc has had very little use, I doubt if the hdd is full to overflowing.

Today I will transfer the "bad" hdd to a known good system & try booting from it just to eliminate the possibility of a mobo error.  Will also swap a known good hdd to the "bad" system to confirm that it is the hdd giving the problems.

Appreciate your comments and look forward to any other suggestions you come up with

Thanks

V...

It may have difficulty booting just because it is hooked to COMPONENETS that were not there when installed on that hard drive. Results could be inconclusive.Disconnect all peripherals and see if it will boot then. It might be stuck on a corrupt driver.

Burn a KNOPPIX CD on a friend's computer and boot directly to it to see if your volumes are mountable.

Use a floppy with just ntldr, ntdetect.com and your version of boot.ini to boot to the hardrive.Hello Virginia, is this the friend's computer? Do you know if a lot of files may have been copied directly to the root directory C: ?

This can cause the ntldr, ntdetec.com files to be in the wrong place.

Also have you tried running the drive manufacturer's diagnostic diskette over the drive, or have you tried loading the Recovery Console? Thanks guys.

I tried the hdd swap around and couldn't boot from the suspect hdd in a known good system.  A known good hdd with XP pre-installed booted successfully in the suspect system after loading new drivers etc.  Slaved the hdd in a known good system and it was recognised in bios but I couldn't access any files.

Mac, YES the problem is in a friend's pc - further interrogation reveals she can only confirm the following: An attempt to install AdAware failed (I think she aborted it).  On next bootup she "seems to remember something about hal" but she's not sure what the message was, I presume hal.dll was missing.  Have tried disconnecting peripherals, no change.  Will d/l Knoppix and hdd diagnostic disk.  Recovery console here I come....

Find it hard to believe that something as simple as a failed software install could cause so much angst.  I thought NTFS was a most stable file system until now....

Thanks again to all...Hello again guys.

I went into the Recovery Console witht the following results.

DIR C: returned "Error While Enumerating Files" (Don't yet know what that means)
DIR D: returned a list of the cd.
DIR A: returned different results every time it was run but did return the cd disk Serial Number.  (No explanation for that)
CD and CHDIR returned "Invalid Path C:\Windows" and any other path I tried.

Also found Master Boot Record and Master File Table corrupt.  Ran Fixmbr which seemed to work but still couldn't boot from the hdd.   Interesting that an attempt to boot into Safe Mode produced the usual list of files to be run but went no further.

Anyway, I thought you'd tried to help enough, and I'd had enough, so Formatted and re-installed XP, just got the problem of Desktop screen resolution being set at the minimum and can't get the slide to move (Integrated Graphics of course).

Still no idea of what could have caused this meltdown.  Partitioning would have helped if all data was on D: but at least determined it wasn't an expensive hardware problem....

Thanks again to all.

V...Life sure ain't simple.

Having done all the necessaries like format, re-install OS, install SP.2, firewall, anti-virus and update the lot on-line I switched off for a while.  On boot up got the missing hal.dll error message & when tried to correct that the lot turned to custard again.  All of the faults in my first post reappeared so I guess the hdd really is shot!!!

A trip to the hardware suppliers is indicated.  Just thought you'd like to know the final outcome, and hey, I'm not the blonde in the family.

Thanks one & all

Solve : WinXP Home Backup Destination Other than A:?

Answer»

I am trying to use the backup utility that COMES with WinXP Home, after installing it from the VALUEADD directory from the WinXP installation CD. I want to back up all files on my WinXP hard drive (an 80 GB WD hard drive that now contains about 4-5 GB of actual data).

I want the destination to be an 80 GB partition on a WD 200 GB hard drive which is connected via a USB port. diskmgmt.msc reports all partitions on the USB drive as healthy, including the P: drive I want to be my destination.

When I run the backup utility, and select the entire C: drive as my source, the only entries in the drop-down menu for the Destination are 3 1/2" diskette and A:. When I click on the browse buttion to the right of the drop-down menu all I get is a message telling me to mount a diskette in the A: drive.

What do I do to get Backup to write to the USB drive? (And as a followup question, what would I do to Backup to write to a Toshiba SD-R1203 CD/DVD Read/Write Drive?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

.....mandyMac..

Molte grazie, Merci beaucoup, Danke schon, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Adding  the physical drives to the "Send to" list for Admin seemed to do the trick. I can't believe how difficult this was, and I REALLY appreciate your help.  Microsoft's " help" is either [a] purposely user-hostile or stupid, or both. There's a June 2005 Article (# 320820) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base entitled "How to use the Backup Utility to Back Up Files and FOLDERS in the Windows XP Home Edition".  This does not even MENTION "Send To" or offer any ideas on what to do if the backup destination you want does not appear in the destination list.

Unfortunately, when I examined the contents of the P: drive, I was dismayed to discover that what's there is one humongous 5.5 GB .BKF file.  I'm very dubious that it will turn out to be useful for anything at all.  Also, when I tried to run Backup again, the only drives that SHOW up in the destination list are A: and P:  None of the other drives I carefully added were there.

Anyhow, for today I give up!  I'm exhausted from trying to bend my mind  to match the convoluted way the little boys from Redmond reason (assuming that there actually IS some rhyome or reason to constructs such as "send to").

Like Scarlett, I'll think about all that tomorrow [g].

But thanks again for helping me make considerable progress.

Solve : Safe Mode / Scanreg?

Answer»

My sister has Windows ME.  When trying to start up the computer, it attempts to start up in Safe Mode because of  some SORT of registry error.  It SAYS to run 'scanreg' to fix it but it doesn't show the 'Start' BUTTON in the bottom left corner so I can't get to the point I need to be to run scanreg.  Any suggestions?  start up using F8 but instead of choosing safe mode, choose restart in MS-DOS mode.

This will GIVE you the COMMAND prompt to use the scanreg /restore function.

Solve : Booting issues?

One of my other computer's, when you push the power button, does not do anything.  It turns on, there is a fan running, and you can see that the power ligh is on and thats it.  No beeps from the bios or anything.  Also, my monitor doesnt detect a signal coming from the PC so it stays on stand-by.  I TRIED using the search but i couldnt find anything.  Any help on what this could even be would be great. ( and im no stranger to jarrgon either :-P).

-RyanOne or more of the COMPONENTS INCLUDING the monitor has become unseated somehow.
Power down and remove the power source completely from both the monitor and the case.
Making sure you are properly grounded check all connections...biggest and usual suspects: RAM chips, video cards, and or IDE drive cables.
While you are in there do some general housekeeping getting rid of all dust bunnies etc.

also it sometimes works again if i restart   Do you have adware/spyware/antivirus solutions in place and being used?

Tr Ewido, Spybot, Ad Aware, and AVG Free (they are all free, just google for them) to make sure your system is clean and let us know.I am not understanding LOADING "shortcuts"  Are you talking about shortcuts on the desktop?  Blank icons?
Why don't you right click on the icon and look in properties.  Find out where these programs are LOCATED and then try and see if they will open from the directory in which they are.  I hope this helped a bit.

Solve : 30 second delay opening file?

Answer»

Hello:

I really hope somebody can give me help with this problem. I am running win xp on a dell 2.66 machine with 512 mb ram. With online assistance I BELIEVE we have cleaned any current virus problem (hjt log looked good). However, I still have an annoying problem that nobody has yet been able to help me solve. The problem is that anytime I wish to save a file in the "save in" box, open a file from another location using the "look in" box or run a script from the start>run area or even bring up windows explorer (actually any box where I make an entry) I have an exact 30 second delay before any listing/result occurs. I normally turn off the computer at night and this SUDDENLY occurred one morning after I booted up. The problem does not occur when I am running in safe mode or safe mode with network support. It just has the problem in normal mode. I initially thought it could be associated with my home network in that I set up another computer the night before. I was loading Linux on one drive on this other computer (physically connected to the lan) but wasn't ( I thought) doing anything associated with the network and Windows 98 on another drive on this same other computer.

I have run Mcafee, spybot and ewido as well as Microsoft's beta. I also ran Cwshredder and cclean. The hjt log looks ok. Looking at the events log I see some warnings that I don't quite know how to interpret. But, it looks as though windows is looking for something it can’t find or it is trying to "open in" or  "save to" something it can’t find. It then gives the called for result after it times out (at 30 seconds).  Ex. one error says "Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service to connect". Another says "The device Root\Legacy - . NEIELD\0000 disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal". Please any help would be appreciated. This is very frustrating. Thank you in advance. Have a good Thanksgiving.

In Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager rite clik your Burner and uncheck Allow Windows Backup for this device...

patio.  Thank you for the note. Unfortunately I have another problem in that my device Manager window is blank and shows nothing. I'll try to fix that and get back to you. Thanks again.you could have a virus, have you Run a scan for Viruses and Spyware??

R0SSlol i really need to read peoples posts and not just the Title.

So you have already scanned,

hmmmm

Perhaps your computer just is low on RAM is there many things running in the background? Press Ctrl Alt Del then go to processes.

R0SSHello again:

There are a number of things running; but, I have about 200 mb of available memory. I am about to run Panda again to see what goes. I will get back to you. Thanks again.Ok,

Well if Panda comes back clean maby and your memory is fine I'm GUESSING that its only slow because your trying to open a big file.

Take my "My Videos" folder i have tones of episodes of scrubs in it and it takes a good 20-40 seconds to open depending on what else I'm doing.

How big is the file you are trying to open?
to give you a idea my one is 3 gigs of scrubs.

R0SSThe problem occurs in whatever I am doing - small or large file etc. Whenever I try to use the box "look in", or "save in" or when I start>run a script or even clicking on the Windows Explorer icon it hangs for exactly 30 seconds and then displays the results.  If I go to start>search>files.. and place a file name in the box to search it will hang for 30 seconds before the search button can be used. Even in IE when I put a url in the open box it will hang for 30 seconds before it activates. It is interesting that the time delay for any of the functions is exactly 30 seconds. Incidentally, I got the device manager box working; but, I see no "Allow Windows Backup for this device.." when I right click a device. Thanks for the help. If you can think of anything else it surely would be appreciated. So you have Linux and Windows 98 on the same computer?  Just on different hard drives?  You can't do that.  Linux is picky and prefers the computer to itself.  It will run but with issues.  One of those I'm guessing you're having.

Duel booting with Linux is not a good idea, especially with windows 98.  If you leave it then your delay issues most likely won't go away.  Unless I'm overlooking something here.

Just because they are on seperate hard drives doesn't fix everything, they still know each other is there.  That's what I got out of those posts.

Good luck. What a bunch of cr*p, Mystik! Windows 98 and LInux get along great. This is absolutely NOT the source of the problem. It is obvious that you have not used this SETUP, at least correctly. Shame on you!!!!

Oh my bad.  That is just what I've been told a lot before.  Sorry, I wasn't trying to be misleading, just un-informed.

Everything I could find about the IMAPI CD rom service is that it's for drag and drop cd burn cabability.  Check in your services to make sure this is not set to disabled.  Although everything I found on that error was for XP, not sure about 98.  Can't hurt to look though, afterall a burner is a burner. Quote

Ex. one error says "Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service to connect".

Without stating the obvious the problem sure seems to revolve around this.

Having a bad day are we GX1 It just burns me when people who have not actually used Linux (much or correctly) just repeat FUD they hear from someone else's brother, etc.

I appreciate Mystik owning up to having no personal experience with the situation.

I am thinking this is a driver issue of some type or some type of hook.  Systems feels like it simply will not go faster.  Normally I would blame this on power management or something but it is not the case.  I have also replaced the CPU and MotherboardThis is from your previous thread and sysinfo.

What does the bottom of your Task Manager say for CPU Usage & Memory Usage? my harddrive was going crazy thats what I would have thought but I actually ADDED another gig of ram with no change in speed.  When I run a CPU Diagnostic with no other apps running it says my CPU is running extremely slow for its SPECS and memory speed is slowWhen I am running nothing(except a few resident apps like virus scanner, etc) and I open task manager.  I am at 100% CPU resouces.  When I sort it by CPU% Taskman is on the top with like 65% of the CPUI ran ProcExplorer from System Internals which shows hidden processes and same thing Quote

Solve : NTLDR is missing - after trying to ugrade memory?

Answer»

Ok I really need help.I tried to add an xtra mem card to my sony vaio desktop, not much room inside the case to manuever the card into the slot easily, and INSTEAD of taking out the floppy drive(which I never use), I sort of pushed it through the slot(dragging it on the pins in the plug) til it was centered then pushed it in and locked the tabs.I started it and got the black "Your comp.was either not shut down properly...or you installed new hardware" screen I clicked on the restart normally option waited, the windows XP sceen flashed then went back to the black "improper shutdown" screen.I tried selecting "start in safe mode" it seemed like it tried but froze on the list of startup items screen.I tried norm.start, no good.I went back and removed the memory card  I installed and tried to restart again w/only my orig.256MB card, this time all I got was constant beeping, blank screen. I went back in again and found the memory card not plugged in fully and noticed a difference in the other plug slot, the difference was 2 small pieces of metal(silver)possibly pieces of the prongs inside the DIMM slot which may have came off from PUSHING the card through the slot,I removed those pieces, installed both memory cards and tried to restart, I got the NTLDR screen this time (I think) I ended up removing all the memory cards (I dont know if they could've gotten damaged by having the metal in the slot and turning the comp.on)and installed 1 card I know is good and tried again, same thing,I removed the hard drive and tried it in another XP mach. same thing-NTLDR is missing.I put the HD back in orig. mach.and tried again. I got a black screen SAYING something like an error... install system disk... I only have Sony sys. recovery disks 1,2,3 Application recovery disks 1,2 and Driver recovery disk,so I tried the Sys. recovery disk 1 but when I got to the option to partition drive I didn't want to completely erase my HD ( no other options)Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?Can I get into the HD to save my files before recovering? Is there any way to test the motherboard,DIMM slots and or memory cards to see if they are damaged? I was thinking about taking it to Best Buy(where I bought it in 2001) and letting the Geek Squad  check it,but,I already spent 19.95 on Sony tel.support only to be told they think I need to do a full sys. recovery(which they will walk me through)I know this is a long post,so thanks to anyone who has the patience to read it,I'd appreciate any feedback.Take your computer to the shop.Dragging it thru the slot has probably damaged contacts in the slot...be prepared to purchase a new MBoard.

patio.  I would take it to the shop where they should have a MICROSCOPE, or jewellers/electronics magnifying glass, to be able to see the fine contacts in detail and see if there is any damage and whether it can be repaired or not.

Take the modules with you.

If you CLICK on the link below you'll come to an IDE/USB converter for use with USB2 which will allow your drive to be connected to another computer for data recovery. The shop will probably have one so all you need are data CDRs or data DVDs for them to burn your data to a safe place.

Keep the floppy drive it can come in VERY useful for repairs. Not least you can image from a floppy with Image for DOS which actually reads NTFS, and you can also edit the boot.ini file, and boot to the hard drive, if you have a floppy, FULL formatted by any XP computer, with just the ntldr, ntdetect.com and right boot.ini file on it.Just try discharging the power from the motherboard.

Remove power cord and then push the on botton. Obviously your pc wont start, but the power that was on the motherboard would be discharged.

Place power cable back. and try starting then. Resset BIOS settings when trying to re-insert the memory modules..

When you do get a successfull boot, try optimizing the BIOS by loading Factory settings instead of BIOS Defaults.

Solve : Driver IRQ error??

Answer»

Hi, I had a friend build me a computer while we were stationed in Korea. It has an ASUS motherboard (A7v8x-x) with a Sempron 2200: 80G Hard drive (can't recall manufacturer); LG CD-RW; and 512 M RAM. Oh, also running Nvidia 5700LE vid card. Am using Windows XP Professional OS.

I have had numerous crashes, blue screens, and even a weird boot loop where it CYCLED through the motherboard banner (BIOS utility?), DOS startup page, and the Windows XP, ad infinitum.

MS error report suggested that it was a driver error and the blue screen of death keeps showing  the following message: "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

I have DONE the following (not necessarily in response to the above message):
1) Re-formatted the hard drive and reinstalled most of my software and initiated Windows Update, 2) Uninstalled Windows Service Pack 2, 3) Boot from CD and chose the "repair" option.

In the BIOS setup utility, on the "advanced" page I noticed a red caution message regarding the RAM speed needing to be at least 333MHz, so I changed it from "auto" to "400".

The SYSTEM seems to have a great deal of trouble with "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic", but I am reluctant to assume it is the GAME as I had zero trouble with it in Korea. I have already un- and re- installed the game (retained the saved game folder).

As you can see, there are seemingly many variables involved. I am by no means a guru and am baffled by the IRQL error message above.

Any help? What USB devices have you installed, and attached to your pc whilst this happens?

Try UPDATING all drivers form the manufacturuers website.I'd give it a physical hardware check, the move from Korea may have dislodged a card or a plug.
Reset your bios ram setting back to auto.
Test the ram with memtest.
Check your supply voltage settings are correct. Thanks for the suggestions...where can I find "memtest"?www.memtest86.com

Solve : batch file help - how to test network connection?

Answer»

i want to write a batch file that tests the whether the computer is connected to the network, and then runs commands based on the result. does anyone know how such a batch file might look?Yes.
That program should:
-ping the gateway to see if it has connection (or other computer in your network); or, if your computer automatically receives ip, just check to see if your computer receives an valid IP
-launch commands/programs

I sugest you to use a programming language like python.
Maybe if you could tell us exactly what commands you want to execute, or describe a litle more your wish, than we will be more ABLE to help you.in a simple batch file, i want to be able to test if my computer is connected to the network (ie, ping the router or check the machine's ip), and if it is not on the network, disable and re-enable the network CARD. i already know how to disable and re-enable the network card from the command LINE, but i want to know how to implement the first part (an IF statment based on the network status) in the batch file, if it's possible.i've discovered a solution to my own problem.

i used an INDIRECT method of testing my network, by getting the computer to test for the existence of a file on itself but USING its network name instead of the file's local directory path. it looks something like this:

IF NOT EXIST \\compname\c\test.txt (
devcon disable PCI\devicecode
devcon enable PCI\devicecode
)You could have just made a simple batch file like this.

ipconfig /all
ping *gateway address*
ping *another computer on the network*
pause

This would tell you if you have connectivity with the gateway and beyond the gateway.  It would also allow you to verify the IP configuration of your computer.  The pause would allow you to see it before it ended so you could have time to verify it.

Solve : Help with adding new font to XP?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out here. I have a new font that has a file extension of .shx. It's for AutoCAD drawing software program. So what i would like to do is to add this font to windows font. Is there a way to get around this?

Is it possible to just change the file extension from .shx to whatever file extension for windows font?

BTW, what is the file extension for windows XP Pro?

Thank you very much in advance and look forward to HEARING from you.Copying  and Pasting those fonts to Fonts folder under Windows doesn't help you?

Windows TRUE type fonts have .ttf extension.

More are here

There are also some converters but I don't know any freeware.Does the AutoCAD program have a font folder of its own? Read the programs Help on adding fonts.

"SHX is the file extension for the Shape entities file associated with AutoCAD and with ArcView."YES, AutoCAD does have its own font folder.

Not sure, i think i agree with you that i NEED a third PARTY software to convert the .shx to .ttf.

Anyway, i have a go first and let you know if that's possible or not.

Thank you in advance Quote

Solve : Issue on File sharing permission on XP?

Answer» HI,

I have a several computers on my LAN. One of the computers is the file server. There are a shared folder that is currently shared on the network. There is no a proper permission set on that folder. This means anyone can access to it. What i'd like to do is to set a permission on that. So what i've done is that i've found some help on the internet. I followed the procedure. What i've done for a testing only is as follows

1. turned off the simple file sharing
2. set up a user and a group and put the user into the group
3. go to the shared folder called aaa -> click on sharing and security -> under sharing, select the share this folder, then permission, add the group (Full Control)-> apply and OK
-> then go to security tab, add the group (Full Control)

After having done all that, i went to the other computer that has its simple file sharing turned off as well. I went to my network places folder, and i could actually see that folder. When i clicked on the folder, it said that it isnot accessible, ... contact administrator.

Can anyone please tell me where i did wrong here?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advanceAssociates,

Restirictions takes priority over Permission. So turning off simple sharing may cause that.

Why don't you try to add users or groups from Security tab of that folder?

After general sharing you can assign different permissions to your users.

Turn on simple sharing and try what I offer.

Hope this helps You need leave the 'Use simple file sharing' unticked, otherwise you wont have the Security tab function.

Just a thought but you did put your own username as a MEMBER of the group didn't you? Or log in as the user you setup?

Try adding administrator to the allowed users and see what happens.Associates:

Verify that the network connection is good.  Both computers should have the same network IP Address and the same subnet mask (in the command prompt window of both computers, type IPCONFIG /ALL).  If either has a network address that begins with 169, then that computer was unable to connect to your DHCP server.  Try to ping the network address or computer name of the other computer to see if you get any reply (for example, in the command prompt window, type PING FILESERVER, where fileserver is the name of the computer with the shared folder).

Confirm that both computers are in the same workgroup by checking the Computer Name tab of System Properties.

Double check that the folder is actually shared.  Make sure that your user name is a member of the group that has full control of the folder.  Make sure that your user name uses the same password on both computers.  Do not use any Deny NTFS permissions, just Allow NTFS permissions.

Try turning off or reconfiguring the WINDOWS XP firewalls to see if that is the cause of the problem.

Let us KNOW how it goes,
Doc

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your tips and helps. Yes, it works in a sense that i could access to the shared folder only if the simple file sharing is enabled. However, i think that doesn't provide enough security. Besides, we don't get security tab under sharing and security if we enable the simple file sharing.

However, if i disable the simple sharing, i can only access to the folder given that the everyone is not removed from the list under sharing -> permission. It won't work if i remove the everyone from the list and add only my username to the list. BTW, i logon to my computer as an admin. I even added my username to the list under security tab too. That doesn't work either.

Both computers, the fileserver and my computer, are on the same workgroup.

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to show me a step by step procedure for setting it up. I am happy to start it all over again.

Another question is that for being able to access to the folder, does windows check the user name that we enter when we log onto the computer to see if it allows to access to the folder or does it ask for password and/or username when double-clicking on the folder.

Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you Quote

What groups have access to the folder now?  The Administrators group should have full control permissions to the folder.

The computer with the folder asks for a user name and password if you are logged on to the other computer with a user name or password that is different then the one in its local security database.

You must log on to the remote system using the same user name and password you use to log on to the local system.

Well, that would take a few days.  A better solution would be for you to start over by creating a new folder to share and type EVERY step you take to set the folder up as a shared folder with NTFS permissions.  That way we may quickly see what step you are doing incorrectly and point out what you need to do to correct the error.

Best regards,

Thank you very much for your reply.

All the computers on my network are running windows XP Pro.

Honestly, i have tried so many times to use the XP's file sharing permission features but without any lucks. That's why i was looking for other alternatives.

Say, we have 3 computers, compA, compB and compC. They are all running on XP Pro.

Please let me explain in a BIT more detail(i hope you don't mind) how i set it up and do please check what i did wrong. For a trial and error purpose, i didn't touch anything on the fileserver. Instead, i tested it on compA and compB.

1. I unchecked the simple file sharing on these 3 comps in order that i can set security permission.
2. set up username and password on 3 comps ie. compA & compB. For example on compA, username: johns & it's got password, and on compB, michael is the username, and michelle on compC as username
3. On compA, i created a user by going to "computer management" -> add user "michael". There is a folder called "mydata" sitting on C:\mydata on compA. I made it shared on the network by going to "Sharing and Security" -> share this folder -> on the permission, there is everyone set with only read permission -> on the security, i add user by going to add -> change the object types to user -> i can't change the location so i use "compA" -> Advanced -> find now -> compA/michael. I did the same way for compA/michelle.
For security setting, i set michael with a full control and michelle with a limited control ie read only.

Then, after having done all that, i went to compB logging as michael and went to windows explore trying to find the folder thru network places. When i double clicked the folder, it actually let me in without asking any password. The problem was i couldn't change or save anything on the folder eventhough i set michael with full control on the security setting while everyone set with limited on the permission on compA. what's happening here? what happen to the full control i set on the security setting for michael?confused.

I hope i explained it well to you.

Thank you once again in advance and look forward to hearing from you

To remove STIMON from startup:

Click Start > Settings > Taskbar&Startmenu.
Click Start Menu Programs.
Click the Advanced button.
Double-click Programs.
Double-click StartUp.
Highlight Watch and click EDIT then Cut.

To put an icon on the desktop so the program can be run LATER:

Right-click on the desktop.
Left-click Paste.
thanks, i knew it was something goofy.  makes sense cuz i removed some old programs that were related to an old scannerok..start menu doesn't show "watch" on list however stimon is in the disabled startup items.  checked the msconfig and the startup items list the still image monitor but it is not checked as being active...

Solve : using Microsoft office twice??

Answer»

If I purchase microsoft office, will I be able to use it twice. Like for TWO different computer? How about with an operating system? The license is for ONE computer. Go to microsoft.com to read the EULA (End User License Agreement). As above advice.  Read the EULA.

Also from the Activation FAQ:http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_faq.mspx

"...Product Activation WORKS by validating that the software's product key, required as part of product installation, has not been used on more PCs than is allowed by the software's end user license agreement (EULA). In general, Windows XP can be installed on one PC and Office 2003 or Office XP can be installed on one PC and the laptop computer used by the user of the one PC. (For SPECIFICS, please see the EULA accompanying your product.)..."

DellHave you thought about using Open Office for free? I use one English version and one French version.
