Solve : internet ports not working?

Answer»

Hey,

I'm having alot of problems with getting my FTP to work and also connecting to my websites webmail, phpMyAdmin, and cPanel.

When i connect to my FTP it will connect (some times) but can't load any of the directories. This is some of my FTP log.

Quote

Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (70,86,12,226,200,193)
COMMAND: LIST
Error: Transfer channel can't be opened. Reason: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
Error: Could not retrieve directory listing
Command: PWD

And when i TRY to access any of the webmail etc areas i get a timed out error in my browser. I have talked to both my host, who said nothing is wrong and they can't reproduce the error and my ISP who says that are not blocking any ports.

This started happening a month or two ago.

I have tried to add port 21 (for FTP) to my windows firewall but it still doesn't help any,.

I really haven'ta clue what to do and no one else seems to have an answer for me.

Hopefully someone here can help me out!

Gaia:

FTP uses two ports: 21 for sending commands, and 20 for sending data. Configure your firewall to allow access through both ports.

DocHave you tried accessing your ftp server with IE?hey,

Thanks for the replies.

When i am adding the FTP ports to Windows FireWall, which do i set them as? UDP or TCP?

Also, i tried accessing my /cpanel through IE and again, i cannot gain access to it.Just to Add.

My Log folder does not contain any files?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318380I have no idea what /cpanel is?
Is your computer completely free of viruses & malware?sorry, /cpanel as in www.mydomain.com/cpanel. As i previously said, it has nothing to do with my host as i can't access anyone's cpanel on any domain and everyone else can access it. (same as with my www.mydomain.com/webmail)

I ran a virus and spyware check but nothing. Quote
...

Gaia:

FTP uses both the TCP and UDP protocol on ports 20 and 21:

http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

Why not just temporarily disable the firewall to SEE if FTP will work then? If it does, then you know the firewall is the cause of the problem and you may concentrate on reconfiguring it correctly.

Doc
Hmmm maybe it's not my firewall then as that didn't do anything when i disabled it. Though what else could it be?

I just don't understand becuase sometimes i can connect to FTP and it works fine and then it will just suddenly not work.

Same with the /webmail, /cpanel, etc.

What else could be "blocking" the ports? Quote

Solve : error opening wk4?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if ANYONE might be able to help me here. i've received some files and they all have .wk4 file extensions. I believe they're produced by lotus 123.

There is an error occur when trying to open it from excel. I'm running XP Pro with LATEST windows office 2003.

The error says "cannot read record(Cell:[HARIET_V.WK4]simmons!A04)". Is it to do with the file wk4 itself or there is certain things in wk4 that excel cannot read.

Thank you in advanceAre all the relevant file converters installed? This for Office 2K3 but all installations are similar:

i have tried as you instructed me to. however, after getting to the point of choosing converters and filters - there is no run all from disk. There is only options like run from my computer, run all from my computer.

Should i go for that option "run all from my computer"?

Solve : re-installing Windows starting from a:\?

Answer»

This is not an entirely original subject. Apologies in advance. Being a new user, I posted the question originally as a response to a previous message. Here it goes.

i got this dell inspiron LAPTOP for free, so despite the 4 M hardrive and 128 RAM, i decided to clean it up and use it for basic email and word processing. i successfully completely erased the HD using driveerase pro. the good news is the product works. the bad news is, the laptop is rebooting from the startup floppy i CREATED but won't let me do ANYTHING else past that. evidently, the computer has forgotten it has a cd-rom drive, so i can't reinstall windows.

i know there have been similar QUESTIONS posted here and i have followed the advice provided in response to those posts but i still can't get out of the little A:\ except to go to C:\, and not much more.

Can anyone provide specific steps i can take to get to a point where I can reinstall the operating system?

Thank you very much and apologies for the double-posting.

Have a great day.

Download and extract this archive to a folder. It's a self extracting bootdisk image.
Run the resultant bootdisk.exe file and ensure that you have a diskette in the floppy drive. The diskette creation process will now begin.
This diskette can now be used to boot any machine with a floppy drive. It loads real mode mouse and CD drivers (The first CD device appears at V:) and several useful tools including DelPart.

An ISO image of a bootable CD that's built from this bootdisk is available here if no floppy drive is available. This is tremendously helpful. Thank you for taking the time to write. I have followed your directions and everything happens EXACTLY the way you describe and illustrate. won't be able to try it on the laptop till later tonight, but feel extremely hopeful that, given your help, this is going to WORK out fine.

Thanks again. I appreciate this enormously.

Take care.

PS: ok to bug you back with further questions?

Thanks.Bug away!
But please don't PM me on matters which can and should be dealt with on open forum.
Oh, and don't bug me about my colour scheme! Quote

Oh, and don't bug me about my colour scheme!

Solve : Can't Connect Ethernet !!?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I've recently got a BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router.
So I plugged it all in through the USB and set up this PC with the internet.
So, i then bought a Ethernet Card and some Ethernet cable for the upstairs PC i want to get online aswell. I fitted in the ethernet card and connected the ethernet wire to the router and to the card. After this i dont know what to do. The upstairs PC says "Aquireing Network Address" and gets no further. The downstairs PC has detected the Ethernet (Local Area Connection 5) but always says its unplugged :-/. Me and my friend have been trying to get my 2nd PC connected to the internet for 2 days now and have still go no further in success than day 1.
Just as a note, the light on the router that says Ethernet is light up so the router KNOWS its there, it just wont let the 2nd PC have internet

Please help me with this problem,
Shoon81The router probably has a built-in firewall. Is there a network setup CD that came with the router? Installing this on each PC may configure the router to allow the computers to connect to the Internet.

DocThanks for the reply, i used your advice but still nothing happens :-/Did your Internet service provider send you the CD and the router?

How is the router connected to the phone jack and to the two computers?

Do you have the documentation that came with the router or is there a document on the CD or in the Windows start menu with instructions on how to setup the router?

Have you tried RESTARTING both computers?

There is no need for drivers for ethernet and with this router in PARTICULAR, it's BETTER to use static IPs.
You can access the router setup by entering http://192.168.1.1 in a browser address bar. (Simply clicking the highlighted link will get you there). The user/password combo is admin/admin.
Set your browser to "Never dial a connection".
Set your NIC up as follows:
IP 192.168.1.3
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Server 192.168.1.1 (Change this later to your ISPs DNS settings)

These settings will get you up and running for now but there are some excellent tutorials and READY made "recipes" for this router available here.

Solve : teenager has switched me to a limited access accou?

I've got sum methods and maybe 1 or 2 would INVOLVE hackin', but I'll be trying it on my computer so it doesn't really matter does it ?

Hacking, (Shouldn't that read cracking?) a Windows system for an admin password, or for that matter, any other password is like using a bulldozer to clean up a spilled ashtray. If you know where to look, there are a few utilities available that will retrieve every pasword on the system WITHIN seconds. Archive etc passwords may take a little LONGER but as people have no IDEA whatsoever about the value of strong passwords, most are GAINED within a few passes.

Solve : Fiddling with My Registry?

Answer»

OK, trying to solve the problem in this thread, I had some thoughts.

I was thinking, IF I could find out specifically where Adobe Reader bangs in and out of my registry, I could set the recently-used file list to ONE, make a copy of the registry, set it to FIVE, make another copy of the registry, and then set it to NINE, and make a THIRD copy of the registry...

Then, I just compare copies, see where the values change, and then set it to ZERO... and see what happens.

So, the questions are:

  • Is there a way to narrow down WHERE a program goes in and out of the registry? I mean, I looked around and there were THOUSANDS of things that COULD be what I want!
  • Is there a way to make a copy of the Registry that I can then open in MS Word? (Because in Word, I can do a "Compare Documents")
  • Am I just flippin' nuts for even thinking such a thing?
THANKS for the help, direction, pointers, advice, etc...Just curious: Why do you want to do this in your Registry?Uninstall Adobe Reader completely
Delete all related files and folders if any remain
Reboot and run CCleaner committing to the "Issues" scan several times until no further issues are found
Download RegMon and FileMon from SysInternals
Fire up both, set them monitoring and reinstall the Adobe Reader.
Once AR is installed, turn off the monitors and export the log files.

You now have a complete file and registry activity map of the AR installation routine.Holy smokes, Backdated, that's more work than it's worth! I hope you knew that off the top of your head and didn't do a lot of research on my (now ungrateful) account...

I am presuming there's a registry tweak somewhere.

In the Adobe Reader preferences menu, you can change the Recently Used Docs list to show as few as ONE recently used doc.... But I would like to disable that feature entirely. I was thinking that there is probably something in the reg somewhere where I could, for lack of a better word, comment it out, and would be over and done with.

So I changed my Reader prefs, exported my Registry, changed 'em again, exported my Registry, and changed 'em again, and exported my Registry... (which is a 25,000 page Word document!!!)... and Find and Compare Docs didn't find any changes between any of them...

So I will just have to live with this annoyance.

(Here's part of the problem... A manager may read a bunch of resumes on the computer, and then another manager may come and read a bunch of disciplinary files... Now, they don't have "access" per se to the individual files, but I don't want folks to even SEE the names of the files others have looked at... And I SURE don't want to come in and see that folks have been reading "Countdown to Infinite Crisis" when they were supposed to be working!!! So it benefits everyone)Simple trick:
  • take one PDF file
  • rename said file to something obscure and unique (eg 'a_thousand_pounds_of_cabbages.pdf')
  • open file in Adobe Reader
  • search registry for the obscure and unique filename, and you will find the MRU registry entry
Having done all that, you can relatively easily create a VBSCRIPT to clear out the MRU list whenever you want. Thanks, that sounds like a great starting point.

I ALSO have CRAP Cleaner, and I can also always set it to "one" and make sure I load an innocuous document before leaving the work station, but I was hopin' for something automatic, for the people.

Solve : Directx problem can't reinstall it?

Answer»

I did DXDiag and it said under my display PANEL that there was an error in the registry and I should reinstall the latest version.

I downloaded 9.0c again and installed it. However when i clicked to install it just jumped straight to the "components are installed and ready for use" SCREEN. I did DXDiag again and it still says there is an error. I also tried downloading the febrary 2006 Directx thing and that hasn't fixed it either.

What do I do?
Some people say it can't be uninstalled & some say it can.
I don't know for sure and I have had no reson to try.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2935
One sure fire way is to reformat. ALRIGHT Fed! Reformat that puppy!

I have never seen it successfully uninstalled.is your video card a built in, AGP card or a PCI card, if it is an AGP or PCI card try uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling it, make sure that you still have the cd driver for the video cards, then reinstall again direct x9.0c,, try it... http://www.brothersoft.com/utilities/uninstallers/directx_happy_uninstall_40880.html

Would this be successfulHaving read the bumph on it at the vendors site (Please always try to link to the authors site rather than 3rd parties as unwanted add-ons can get attached the further along the chain it travels), all I can say is that I'm not overly impressed. The installer is CLEAN as far as malware etc goes but the online help FILE is missing or mislinked. The program has inbuilt limitations as it's a trial version which is fair enough - But, those limitations aren't referenced!
Quote

DirectX Happy Uninstall is currently distributed as SHAREWARE. This unregistered version of DirectX Happy Uninstall is almost fully functional, However, it has some limitations.
When (IF?) I ever get time, I'll try it inside a sandbox and post the results.
Fair enough, I just remembered seeing it somewhere.....never looked at it.

Solve : HELP WITH CD/DVD drive?

Answer»

I just bought a new computer,

I poped in a cd that has music and some executable files. I'm trying to copy those files into my new computer, the proble is that when i put in the cd nothing happens. Then I go to My computer click on the cd drive tht has the cd and NOTHING HAPPENS. I right click it and choose EXPLORE and NOTHING HAPPENS, I right click it and choose play AND NOTHING HAPPENS :-?

What is going on? I know it's reading the cd because I can see the name of the cd on the cd drive icon

I hope you guys can help me......

Thanks in advanceHeloc:

Make sure you are clicking on the correct drive in My Computer.

Make sure the optical drive is working (try putting a different CD in the drive to see if you can explore it).

The CD may be damaged or may be a type that your CD-ROM drive cannot read (for example, some older CD-ROM drives cannot read CDs formatted with the UDF FILE system).

DocYes I'm clicking on the right drive, if I put in a music cd the only way I can play it is by playing it from Windos media player or any other media player. The thing is that it does not let me check the contents of the cd.

When I put in the cd it gives the normal options- open to play it with a media player or open a folder to view files, so I choose Open folder to view files and nothing happens

Could it be just a bad driver even though it's a new computer? If this is a copied CD, it's likely to have been written in "sessions". To view it, you'll need a "session viewer" such as the one provided with some Roxio releases or perhaps something like BadCopy Pro.it's a cd that I made, it has mp3's, and some executable filesPop it back in the burner and open your burning software. Is there an option to "Finalise" the CD?Yes it's aleady checkedHow did you compose this CD? PLEASE give exact details if possible.
I'ts not just this cd, it's ANY cd I put in the cd drive. when you put in ANY cd you get the options that NAY computer gets. It's the little screen that says. What do you want to do? Open with WINDOWS media player open with REAL player etc etc. So I want to choose the option that says
OPEN FOLDER TO VIEW FILES WITH WINDOWS EXPLORER , so I click it and it takes me to the desk top
it's really weird. So then nothing happens, then I go to MY Computer, then I double click on the CD DVD drive(It's a single drive)that shows the name of the cd that's currently in the cd drive and nothing happens.
Normally you put in a cd in the cd drive and you can double click the cd drive icon and a folder opens up that shows you the contents of the cd, but this computer does not.

This is exacly what happens step by step. Quote

I'ts not just this cd, it's ANY cd I put in the cd drive.

Why didn't you say this earlier??

Solve : DirectX 9.0c REFUSES to install. Can't upgra?

Answer»

Today has been adventure. Here I am after 11 straight hours of working on my crashed computer.. which spawned from this DirectX problem.

Here's the problem:

I have DirectX 9.0b, and I need to install 9.0c so I can play the game I just bought. I downloaded the 9.0c redistributable and tried to install it. First I launched the installer, accepted the EULA, and then it said it was checking for previously installed versions. After about 5 seconds it instantly goes to the next screen and says something to the effect of "Installation Complete. The components installed are ready for use." I never once see a progress bar of the new files being installed.

So I close that window, reboot (even though it didn't ask me to), and check my version again (dxdiag). Still 9.0b.

So last night when I was struggling with this, I found somewhere to try running DirectX Eradicator to completely remove DirectX. That was fine. When I removed it, 9.0c would not let me install because there were no existing versions of DirectX found on my system (because I just erased them with eradicator). So I used the Eradicator's roll-back feature to reinstall directx (which pulls the files off your windows CD). That went fine.. I'm back to 9.0b. Still can't install.

I also ran through that process yet another time, however that time I put in an older copy of Windows, which was packaged with DirectX 8.1. That went fine also. But I STILL couldn't upgrade to 9.0c.

Anyway, something happened today that caused my computer to completely crash (a windows critical update is INCOMPATIBLE with my system and causes me to BSOD during boot).. a pain in the *censored*, but that's ok. I reinstalled XP (pro sp2), and the FIRST thing I tried doing, even before installing video drivers, was I installed DirectX 9.0c.

IT STILL DIDN'T WORK! Even after a fresh format/reinstall of windows. DirectX won't install!!

I know this topic is lengthy, but I wanted to make sure I covered all the details. Can someone please help me to find out how to fix this issue? I have not received any errors from the DirectX installation. All it says is the installation is complete.

My specs:
- AMD Athlon 64 3700+
- ECS K8T890-A Motherboard
- 2 GB Dual Channel DDR400
- nVidia Geforce 6200
- Windows XP Professional with SP2
- Right now, DirectX 9.0b
- Onboard sound (REALTEK ac'97)/lan/etc.

One thing I've noticed from my MANY google searches, this SEEMS to be somehow associated with Service Pack 2. This seems to be a fairly common problem, yet I can't find any help from MS about it.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam It's also associated with several malware infections. You should always verify that the system is clean before attempting such upgrades.
What state is the system in now?
What are the full details of the BSOD?I installed 37 Microsoft critical updates. They all installed fine according to MS's website. Then when I rebooted, the windows loading screen would come up normally, and after that, I got the message:
Quote

c0000269 Illegal system DLL relocation. The system DLL kernel32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly.

The relocation occured because the DLL c:\windows\system32\gdi32.dll occupied an address range reserved for windows system DLLs.
The message would only appear for about 1/3 of a second, then the system would reboot and repeat this process. I actually had to record a video of my computer crashing and play it back and freezeframe it to see the error. To fix this problem, I ended up having to uninstall a few of the updates through the recovery console. At this point I was able to boot into safemode, but explorer.exe would crash immediately. So I had to launch system restore from the command prompt in safemode.

After I formatted and reinstalled, I tried to install DirectX 9.0c right away and it failed as usual. The next thing I did was tried running my updates again since the system was running on a fresh install. The same thing happened. BSOD.

I believe it was an undocumented bug in one of the updates. I came to the conclusion I'm never installing another windows update for as long as I live.

One of the culprits was most likely one of the following (removing these three got rid of the BSOD):
KB896424
KB890859
KB885835

Right now the system is running fine since I did system restore, but I can't install my critical updates.

EDIT:
I recently remembered that I had slipstreamed the SP2 RC1 into my copy of XP Professional (bad idea, I know) months back when the beta came out. This is why I have 9.0b instead of 9.0c. This may ALSO be why the windows updates are crashing my system, but I'm not 100% sure. And it may ALSO be related to why I cannot upgrade directx.

I have a few new non-directx questions, so I'm going to create a new topic for this. One of the updates (KB885835) has caused problems in certain systems but as far as I'm aware, it's only caused the symptoms that you have described when problems (Infection) were already present on the system. Critical updates must be installed!

Have a look here with regard to kernel32 errors but it could be related to just about anything.Just out of curiosity, what makes you so certain I have a virus? Could it not just be a hardware/driver conflict of some sort? All I've said is that this behaviour is exhibited when certain infections are present. Having said that, it may be entirely due to some other cause or causes.
I cannot be certain about anything with regards to your system as I have so little information about it. All I can offer at this moment are possible causes of the symptoms that your machine is exhibiting.
At this moment, I'm pushing hardware/driver problems to the back of the queue because it's likely that if one of these were the cause, symptoms would have been exhibited before now. I may be wrong in that assumption.

Perhaps the question that you should be asking of yourself is:
Am I absolutely certain that I don't have any infections? Quote

First time around, I didn't see this edit. It changes the whole picture!
It's CERTAINLY not a bad idea to slipstream service packs etc, but it certainly is a bad idea to slipstream BETAS!

If I were you, I would download SP2, DX9c and any necessary firewall/anti virus/anti malware protection and burn them to CD.
I would then reinstall XP from scratch with my original and genuine Windows CD.
I would then install SP2, ensure everything is OK and back everything up.
I would now install DX9c and test it further.
If all is OK, back up again.
Now I would install my firewall etc, go online and get the critical updates and test further.

Answer»

I have windows XP home Edition with SP2. When I go on the INTERNET it only works for about a minute then it freezes and when it comes back the connection is gone! I have 512mb RAM and 70gb HARD drive so i have enough space. Is there anything i can do to improve this on windows other than changing the modem speed? :-?What type of connection is this? ISP? ect. (more info please)Except where USB modems are in use, particularly Sagems, the problem is almost always caused by malware. It is a dial-up connection which averages about 49.8kbps.That speed is very good if you're in the UK.
Carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.Try broadband, there are lots of good BroadBand providers, for the little ammount of MONEY extra they charge. Its well worth it !

Solve : Weird phantom mess-up?

Answer»

As usual, XP SP2.

I wanted to create a new folder in another of my folders, so I could organize a few miscellaneous files. I went to New, and Create Folder, but nothing appeared. Typing a letter highlighted a file as if I hadn't selected "New Folder". So I rebooted.

Here's the best part...

I rebooted, and navigated to the folder, and about 4 or 5 New Foders were there. (I tried it several times) So I deleted all but one and went happily on my way. But I'm curious: Has this happened to anyone else? What can cause this?Hi Dilbert

It may be worth your while doing this

Go into safe mode (that way only the basic stuff will LOAD). How to start your computer in Safe Mode

Then do the following How To Clean An Infected Computer

ElaineYeah Dilbert, I have seen this KIND of weirdness before. Usually I see it with network drives though. I wonder if the folder creation process occurs separately from the Explorer process? And then the usual notification of changes doesn't occur occasionally?

Can't find anything USEFUL in the MS Knowledgebase, but then it's hard to think of particularly useful search terms in this context!

Just out of curiosity - did you try HITTING F5 when your new folders failed to appear? If not, try it next time this happens.

(And of course remember what I said about having a poltergeist in your machine...)

Solve : system32 on startup?

Answer»

I don't know if I'm in the RIGHT place here. I pretty much don't know what to do when a problem arises. I'm good at following directions though! A few weeks ago when I started my laptop up the system32 program (?) popped up and warned me not to change anything. I never opened it. Don't even know what it does. Anyway....now it comes on every time I boot up the computer. How the heck do I rectify this? I did a McAfee scan and there are no infected FILES. Please help! Thanks!

AmandaHello Amanda & welcome to the forum.

Please post the exact message displayed. Is it the System32 folder opening?
Is a SoundBlaster Audigy card installed?Yes it's the actual folder. There are no error messages COMING up...just not to remove stuff or it could damage the system. Actually that message doesn't even come up anymore. I didn't see the SoundBlaster on there. Where would I find that? I just don't want this to be a hacker problem but I don't know. Thanks for trying to help me on this! It's most certainly not the work of a "hacker".
Copy the following exactly, paste it into Notepad and save it to your desktop as sys32fix.vbs

Code: [Select]On Error Resume Next

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

X = WshShell.RegRead("HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUN\SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu")

If X <> "" Then

WshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu", "/L:ENG"

X = MsgBox("Your System32 folder should no longer open at boot.", vbOKOnly, "Done")

Else

MsgBox "No Audigy card installed; repair failed.", vbOKOnly, "Finished."

End If

Set WshShell = Nothing
Now double click the desktop\sys32fix.vbs file.I did this and McAfee gave me a warning. "Suspicious script detected" and stopped it. I have the option to let it pass but I want to make sure it isn't going to kill my computer. LOL. Sorry I'm being a PITA but if I lose my computer I lose my connection to the outside world. LOL. Just being cautious! Just give me a little piece of mind please. Again...sorry for being a PITA!McAfee is doing it's job.
The script is most certainly safe to run. It checks for an erroneous registry key. If that error exists, it fixes it. If that error doesn't exist, it exits without doing anything.Hmmmm...didn't do anything. Said it didn't exist. Thanks for easing my mind on it first! LOLOk, there are a host of other reasons for this behaviour and some are malware related.
Carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.OK I think I did it all. The Panda website though when I downloaded it froze my computer so I didn't do that ONE. I think I attached it correctly. Thanks for all your help!I've had a quick glance at your logfile and one or two infections are present. I'm quite busy at the moment so I'll post directions for removal later.
In the meantime, have a look at your Add/Remove Programs applet and if "iWon" is listed, remove it.OK will do. That used to be my homepage until it changed. Oh well. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me!Run Hijackthis and fix the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iWon Messenger Pipe] C:\Program Files\iWon\Messenger\bin\i1IMPipe.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cat]

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Fix this entry if Panda AV was once installed but has since been removed:

O23 - Service: Panda Process Protection Service (PavPrSrv) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Panda Software\PavShld\pavprsrv.exe

Reboot and delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\iWon\
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

Download and run CCleaner but check it's settings first in case there's anything that you don't want removed.Am I supposed to click on those links or fix it from hijackthis? I'm sorry. I'm not very computer literate.
Fix those entries from within Hijackthis.
Do not click on the links!!!!!

You can of course, click on the CCleaner link.Didn't do CCleaner yet....tried to delete viewpoint but it says...."cannot delete viewmgr.exe. Access denied. Make sure disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not in use." [smiley=huh.gif]Fix the links in Hijackthis, reboot and then delete the folders. That's what I did the first time....just tried again and it still gives me the same message
If all the items listed were fixed, viewmgr.exe should not be loading. If it was removed via the Add/Remove Programs applet as requested, it shouldn't even be listed anyway.
Post another logfile.got viewmgr deleted and ran CCleaner. Still want a log file? No, it should be OK now. Just ensure that you follow the instructions with regard to protection by installing and using Spybot, SpywareBlaster and Ewido etc.OK I will use those. However, it still brings up system 32 on startup. [smiley=huh.gif] I guess it isn't hurting anything. I just didn't want to see it all the time. LOLThere are a host of reasons for this occurrence but we had to ensure that it wasn't caused by malware first.
I'm a bit pushed at the moment but I'll sort out a few links for you to explore a little later. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Okie Dokie. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me with this!

Solve : Question about image downloads?

Answer»

This is PROBABLY (hopefully) an easy fix.

I am running XP on my LAPTOP, and every time I right-mouse-click to save a picture to my harddrive, instead of saving the picture and format that the site owner has (for example save as: jamesbrown.jpg) it saves as untitled.bmp.

I looked in my tools but didn't see anywhere where I could change it, as it seems to be set on some kind of default.

Anyone have any ideas?

THANKS in advance!

PS - I am running Windows XP, using INTERNET Explorer 6.0, 256 mg ram with 1.6 mHz.Delete your temporary internet files.
IE>Tools>Internet Options>General. Thanks loads! I don't know WHY it worked, or what that has to do with image downloads, but whatever -- it works!

Thanks again!

Solve : Windows appearing off-screen?

Answer»

I had two monitors on 1 PC for a while but now the other is gone and some windows still appear on the other screen that isn't there and I cant get to them. I've tried disabling the other MONITOR but it didn't work, i'm using Windows XP.Have you tried removing the second monitor via device manager?Yup it's goneHow do you know it's off screen if you can't see it? It may not be there at all!

Have you checked your graphics card properties? What GFX card is involved? It opens up on the bar at the BOTTOM of the screen and when I minimize it and then open it back up again it will show it going to the far right of my screen and then gone.Does your adapter have software that allows for "VIRTUAL desktop"? If so, reset the desktop characteristics there.Nope Originally, could you drag windows between the two monitors? If so, do this: right-click on the application's button on the TASK bar. Click move. Using the cursor keys move the window in the direction it would need to come in order to arrive back on your monitor.

If that doesn't work, we can try a registry tweak. That worked

But there are some things like options in Photoshop that I cant do that for because they dont have buttons on the task-bar.

Solve : ME Device Manager?

Answer»

Installed a WD800B05-RNN Ext USB HDD.

ME Plug&Play detects new hardware and installs a Driver for a USB Mass Storage Device.
Driver ID is "USBSTOR.SYS".

Ext Drive is recognized and is functional (i.e. This device is working properly. If some features of this device are NOT working . . . . . ), BUT ME Device Manager DISPLAYS a GREEN Question Mark superimposed over the USB icon.

QUESTIONS:
1. What does the GREEN Question Mark signify?
2. How do I get rid of it? WD did (and still does) not provide a special driver with this Ext HDD
(none required for Plug&Play ME).
Artyem:

Windows installed the closest driver it could find for your USB keyboard or mouse, or USB hub. The way to get rid of it is to install the latest Windows Me driver from the maker of the device.

Solve : Safely Remove Hardware... is it necessary??

Answer»

I have a couple of SATA drives and a JumpDrive that I plug in occasionally, so the safely remove hardware is always in the systray. I was just wondering if this thing actually does anything and if its harmful to just PULL the jumpdrive out without removing? what does removing it do?Always remove USB devices correctly. You are ASKING for problems if you don't!that's what i figured... i was just wondering what problems could arise. i'm not exactly sure what the problem is and why removing it fixes it. thanks.Due to the computer using "write behind", this is not recommended. "Write behind", is used to speed up the computer - INSTEAD of slowing down the system everytime you make a change, the computer will wait for "idle" time to write to a drive. You may not get updated files, or even get corrupted files. By "safely remove", the computer will force a write to the drive, and allow a COMPLETE check before it allows you to remove the drive. Just LIKE shutting down the computer properly, instead of just turning the power off.cool thanks, that's what i was curious about

Solve : Music Rythmic Speed Fluctuation with Media Player?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP HOME with Media Player 10. I have a Sound Blaster Live audio card with plenty of disk space and RAM. I also have excellent anti EVERYTHING software and scan my system OFTEN so there is no problem in that regard. When I START playing a song from my Media Player LIBRARY the song always starts out too slow and then reaches the correct rythmic speed within a couple seconds but is very annoying having every song start out that way. What could possibly cause this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
BGAre any effects in place either in MP10 or the soundcard auxilliary software?

As an aside, never believe that you won't have a problem with malware just because you run a few scans from diferent applications!

Please insert disk into drive". I have put disks in all drives (floppy and CD/DVD) but it has no effect. Virus and spyware programs are running and current.

What would cause this to occur and how can it be stopped? This a typical symptom of INFECTION by or improper removal of the W32.Netsky.D worm and it's relatives.

Hi, when I try to defrag I get this error.

"Disk DEFRAGMENTER has detected that Chkdsk is

Then when I ATTEMPT to run "Chkdsk /f" (via the cmd prompt)

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another

I am running a DELL Inspiron (9400) E1705 2Gb ram, 2.0GhZ intel duo core proc, 1 GhZ fsb
I had been gradually installing my favorite softwares and had run diskeeper 10 and noticed some

Can anyone advise me?

Have you tried going into the control panel / display and changing it to what it was ?

Be sure and notice the video adaper in Control Panel/System/Device Manager. Is what is showing correct for your machine? It's probably due to a corrupted driver.
Download and run Aida32. This will tell you what graphics card is installed and therefore, which drivers you need.Call me an old fogey, but what's with this "crappity smacked" jargon?

If Backdated's suggestion does not resolve this, when you come back could you please provide more info about EXACTLY how the resolution is smackety crapped?Go to Start/Settings/Crappity Smacked and install I tried that and my computer actually LAUGHED at me. LOL you tried it? Are you serious?!

Solve : System lockup, can't restart, can't shut down?

Answer»

For the last 2-3 months, all too often my system will lock/freeze up . . . random program(s) running, online or offline, or just idle . . . hard drive write light goes into a steady slow on-off CYCLE . . . Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work, reset button on PC doesn't work, power off button on PC doesn't work . . . only recourse is to pull the PC power plug. Reconnect in couple minutes, punch PC power button on & system starts. May or may not get warning window that Windows is checking the file system on one of my drives; if so, files (so far) get Window's ok & I'm back in business until the next time - - which may be minutes or hours or days. Running Win-XP (all current updates) on Pentium IV ; 256Mb RAM; lots of FREE disk space on all drives; defrag, virus & spyware scans are run religeously; have not added any new hardware recently.
Any hints as to what is going on will be greatly appreciated . . . I'm getting very nervous, and these constant system backups are a pain !!!

Solve : popup balloons over icons?

Answer»

How can I stop Windows from offering those annoying pop up balloons over every icon that my pointer rests over on my Task Bar and Quicklaunch?

For INSTANCE, if the pointer is over the Word icon on my Quicklaunch, then a huge bubble pops up that says, "Microsoft Office Word 2003 - Create and edit text and graphics in letters, reports, web pages or email messages by using Microsoft Office Word."

Seriously, I don't need these messages.

Thanks,

JPFI'm not sure you're really talking about "balloon tips", so this may not apply. Anyway, here's a Microsoft reference on HOW TO: Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips in Windows XP. Here' another source with the same procedure: How Do I Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips.XP-AntiSpy will fix this annoying nonsense as well as a few other loopholes and irritations.Hmmm, registry change didn't work.

:-?

JPFWhy go messing in the registry when there are standalone PROGRAMS that will do the job for you?Backdated, apparently you feel spyware is causing the popup balloons that he's talking about, since you provided a link to a spyware removal tool. But, Win XP does display those balloons under certain conditions, so what he's seeing isn't necessarily spyware. Do you agree? From my standpoint, I don't think it's Spyware, I think it's just Windows being overzealous in its attempt at user-friendliness.

The reason I chose to change the registry rather than download the antispy program is because the registry change was pretty straightforward and my Company (and our IT department) would prefer that we NOT download a lot of stuff onto our company computers.

Alas, I still have ballons popping up over my Quicklaunch icons telling me what Excel is for when I am basically a black belt in Excel. Sigghhhhh!

:-/JPF,
You don't need no 3rd party software to disable balloon tips, assuming you R on XP pro, click start, run then type "mmc" this brings up a default console1, now click click file and add/remove snap-in, in the sanp-in click add, select GROUP policy then click add, default choice is local computer, now click finish. close the sanp-in dialog box, click OK in teh add/remove snap-in dialog box. In console1 expand the local computer policy, expand user configuration, expand administrative templates, click startmenu and taskbar, on the detailed right hand pane, double click the "Remove Balloon Tips on Start Menu Items" then select the enabled radio button the click OK and thats it done, you can perform many useful tasks in here.

HTH

CigarmanA few points need clearing up here:

The vast majority of computer problems are caused by virus, trojan or other malware infection. Therefore, when dealing remotely with users and systems that I have no knowledge of, the first step is to ensure that some form of malware isn't the CAUSE. That first step usually reveals that there is some form of infection and cleaning it usually cures the initial problems.

The more astute of you will notice that I very rarely use the term "spyware" and there's a very good reason for that! Very little spyware actually exists out there.

Just where have I said that "spyware" or any other infection is causing this the balloon notification "problem"?

If you had bothered to look at the link I posted, it has nothing to do with spyware or any other virus or malware. It is merely a very useful tool for removing some of XPs annoying quirks, inadequacies and loopholes.

I too believe in not using 3rd party tools where necessary but I am a very experienced user. The OP and the majority of other posters here don't have the benefit of that experience and rightly or wrongly are looking for a quick fix.

If I'd have known that this was a "company machine" in the first place, my initial advice, as always in those circumstances, would have been to have told you to approach sysadmin with your problems.

Any sensible sysad would prefer you to download a program that he could vet before usage than have an operator fiddling in the system registry. Your sysad does know about this does he?Guilty as charged, Your Honor. Yep, I'm guilty of jumping to the conclusion that a software tool called xp-AntiSpy was a spyware detection/removal tool. I took a quick GLANCE at the site, saw some German, which I don't know, and said I'm outta here.
German?

It's unnecessarily time consuming to type the info. in each time I email. There has to be simple INSTRUCTIONS that I just can't find. ANy help would be appriciated! Thank you!
# Open Outlook and make sure you're in the inbox
# On the Menu bar click on 'Tools' --> 'Options' --> 'Mail Format' tab
# Click 'Signature Picker' and then click 'New'.
# In the 'Enter a name for your new signature box', enter a name.
# Under 'Choose how to CREATE your signature', select 'Start from scratch', then click, NEXT.
# In the 'Signature text box', type the text you want to include in the signature (as you want it to appear).
# Click on 'Finish' --> 'OK' --> 'Apply' --> 'Ok'Thank you! However, once I open the "Tools" there is not an "Options" listed. My outlook is opened through web access. Does that make a difference? Quote

Outlook definitely has Options on the Tools menu. Exactly how do you open Outlook? "... through web access" MAKES to sense. Do you have Microsoft Office (the office suite with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and maybe Access)installed on your computer? What version of Office is it?

Solve : XP start up hangs after RAM installation?

Answer»

XP is hanging when starting up after installing new RAM for Dell Dimension 8300. I've tried going back to just the old RAM with no luck. Safe Mode works fine and has been keeping me going for now. It shows the new RAM and I've tried programs to test it and it seems to be fine. System Restore hasn't helped any either. Starting up with boot logging it appears to stop loading DRIVERS at this point:

Loaded driver agp440.sys
Did not load driver ACPI Multiprocessor PC
Did not load driver Audio Codecs

Any help with this would be great. Thanks! What RAM and where did you get it (be as specific as possible!)

REMOVE and reseat it, just for me. Is it recognized in the BIOS? If so, run memtest on it (free at www.memtest86.com) for a few hours - each stick individually and all together.

Is that the only thing you changed (or touched)? Quote

REMOVED and reseated. It is recognized in the BIOS. Ran memtest on each sets of RAM as well as all of it without any errors.

I got the RAM from DELL. I got 2 512MB DDR 400MHz non-ECC that was recommended for my system. the system already had 2 256MB sticks in it. They are installed in the right ORDER as well.

I did add a new DVD burner and Firewire card last weekend, but the computer had been working fine after that. I had also done a BIOS update, installed Nero that came with the DVD burner and Ulead Video Studio that cam with the Firewire card. This was all a few days before installing the RAM and everything was fine.

Thanks for the help so far. I appreciate it very MUCH.

O4 - Startup:ed in indy...... Your hijackthis file isn't complete ........ it is too large to fit in one post so either zip the file and add it to your post as an attachment or .......
post it in several posts . I just had a quick look at what you have posted and your machine is infected , also you do not have any sort of Anti-virus program installed and running ......so before you go ahead and post the rest of your hijackthis log file ..........
Download and install ...the FREE version of AVG ...... http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ once you have it installed, get the latests updates, then reboot your machine into SAFE mode and run a complete anti virus scan with AVG.
REMOVE anything it finds ......... then rescan with hijackthis and post the complete logfile

dl65 A cursory glance of your incomplete file reveals several infections.
Carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If POSSIBLE, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.I downloaded, updated and ran the AVG scan, and then re-ran HJT but the log file is STILL to long for one post...so here is the first part with the rest to come in a 2nd post. Tks ed :

You are still heavily infected.Ok I went through all the downloads in the "in this post" list. The F-Secures Blacklight Beta would not download for some reason and I don't think the Panda Active Scan or the A2Free worked properly, I believe EVERYTHING else worked...anyway here is a zip file of my HJT log file results. Also now I'm having trouble getting web sites to open when I click on icon shortcuts on my desk top. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
edI do not for one minute believe that the procedures that I outlined have been properly followed. However, if you wish to do things the hard way and massively increase the necessity to reinstall and lose data, so be it.

I followed your guideline exactly. However the Panda scan would not install giving me this error message: Setup has encountered a problem and will now close. I tried 6 times to install this program.

F-secures blacklight gave me the following error: F-Secures Blacklight was unable to acquire necessary privleges{SeBug privlege} I tired 3 x with the same result

I think A2Free worked but I was just not sure. It showed me the list of problems the online scan found and then had me download the trial version which as far as I can tell downloaded and installed ok but it never gave me any indication that the probems were fixed.

All other programs on your list worked fine, I've just went over 12 hours of working on this pc (glad this was my day off) and I certainly do not want to do things the hard way and massively increase the necessity to reinstall and lose data. So I'm gonna backout of this for now...get some sleep and start over tomorrow.

Thank you for your time.
edActually, looking at that list he made, it doesn't look like you'll lose too much. That stuff with the O4 prefix? That shows what loads at startup. The most you'll lose is any "run this at startup" settings, which can be easily reset if desired. The R0 and R1 serve no purpose, and can be deleted without causing problems. O2 and O3 - ditto. It's basically a bunch of stuff that your computer doesn't need.

So both of you guys, please, calm down a little. I can see why you're frustrated, but just take it easy for a few minutes. Computer problems annoy me like all get-out as well. Get some water. Catch some sleep. We're all friends here, no reason to fight. And in my opinion Panda not installing isn't the end of the world. Let's just get back to tuning up the OP's computer, OK?

Afterthought: If you're computer features a Restore program, you can make a Restore point before you fix all this. If you don't like the result, you can restore to that point. And it's not like you're gonna lose your Windows directory or important files vital to the computer - at most, if you want some toolbar back that got removed you can always just reinstall that. At absolute worst, you'll need to reinstall a couple of programs. But it's not the end of the world for you or your PC.Dilbert:

My restore point somehow got turned off prior to all the trbl so unfortunately could not go that route:
Thanks for the suggestion though.

I fixed all the HJT items you listed. After rebooting into safe mode not all the search items were found but I deleted all that were and heres my latest HJT.

Tks
edEnsure that "ShowAll Files" etc is enabled as per the previous procedure.
Ensure that System Restore is disabled and it's cache emptied as per the previous procedure.

Solve : Windows registry infected - please help!?

Answer»

Hi! I am first time in this forum and looking forward to TALKING with everyone!

For a few day now I have few messages popping up from Messenger Service, which says :

"Message from Microsoft to inform you about virus detection on date and time. Critical System Error! The windows registry appeares to be infected. Please go to www...regfixes.com to SCAN and repair the system registry."

I did download the regfix software and rand it a few times already. Doesn't work. I am still getting those messages. What does it mean? Is it just a regular pop-up, or Windows is close to failing?

Thank you.
Looking forward to your reply.

You should try restore your system to the point before you are getting these messages, systems retore does not affect or change your personal data files. System Restore automatically tracks changes to your computer at all times and at specific intervals by creating restore points before changes occur. Restore points are stored states of your computer. You can also undo a restore.

Cigarman

Shut the Messenger service off immediately!!!
It's nothing but a honey pot for spammers, scammers and freeloaders.
To do this, enter services.msc in the Start>Run box and in the console that opens, scroll down to Messenger and double click it. SET the Startup Type to Disabled and the Service Status to Stop.
Exit the console.

Do not use System Restore; disable it and reboot.

As you've been running with a major VULNERABILITY and you have infected yourself with RegFix, carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.What sources can we go to to verify that RegFix is a nasty thing. I've looked at 5 pages of a Google search on RegFix and I'm not finding negative stuff; in fact, it all seems to be positive. Mostly, I see mention of RegFix Mantra, a COMPREHENSIVE Registry Cleaner and Registry Fixing tool.

Carry out the procedure outlined by Backdated .......

Solve : Re: Viewing Video clips in email?

What Email service do you use? It's likely that the SPAM blockers don't want you to play it STREAMING. Also, embedding video clips on most Email services is difficult and requires a BIT of HTML in my EXPERIENCE.

Solve : new disk - oops?

Answer»

That disk upgrade may not have been the best of ideas.

1) I get "preparing to install" messages every time that I start any Office product and then it tells me that it didn't LOAD quite right:
"An error OCCURRED and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Please run Setup and select "Repair..." to restore this application."

2) Can't do #1. If I load a setup disk, I get a message that:
"The patch package could not be openend. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package."

3) Can't uninstall and do over: same message as #2

4) Where the *censored* are my emials going? My inbox seems to point to the correct outlook.pst, but it is not showing up in my inbox. The file shows recent modifications, but I can't see them. It's as if my email goes directly down a bottomless pit.

HELP!!!

BobMore details necessary!happily - what do you need? For instance, how "that disk upgrade" was PERFORMED, how big and what channel is "that disk" on?I installed a Seagate 300 as the D drive and ran the Seagate installation software to move everything on the 160 to the new 300 and then moved it to the C drive. Does that tell you what you need? I think most of my problems can be SOLVED if I can get rid of Office without the uninstall files. It won't even let me change the name of the Office directory and re-install. The re-install still sees the old programs, even though I can't use them any more. This whole procedure makes it easy to FUBAR a system. How about backing up data, put drives where they intend to stay and then reinstall?

Your boot.ini is probably tryng to boot from the D drive which is now C, by the way.It looks like the default to me:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="MICROSOFT Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Any other ideas?

OK, yes, that makes sense. How MANY days do you have set there? Does it make sense that you would accumulate 4,000 messages, based on the number of days you have set in OE? Can you tell whether a LOT of spam is running that message count up quite fast? With your ISP, do you have any spam filtering options that STOPS certain spam and directs to a folder other-than your online Inbox?

Solve : Standard Subject Field in Outlook?

Answer»

Can ANYONE help with creating a button to insert a standard phrase into the Subject field of an Outlook 2002 EMAIL message? For instance I want to be able to insert "INTERNET-authorised: " when I email onto the Internet instead of the company LAN.
I believe a macro, with a button linked to it, is the solution. At the moment, I can't tell you how to do that. I've never created a macro in Outlook but I see it can not be done as easily in Word and Excel; you can not simply use the Macro Recorder, you have to open the Visual Basic EDITOR and create code there. I happen to have recently obtained TWO libary references on Outlook, a book and a DVD. If I can find time to delve into this further and get an actual macro recorded, I'll post the coding for it.Yes I also tried to use the Macro recorder and it doesn't work in outlook. Thanks for trying.

Solve : Help with reinstalling Windows XP Pro?

Answer»

I have an Hp Pavilion 504n that came with Windows XP Pro pre-install. The COMPUTER has a 40GB drive that the OS is using. I want to resize the drive to CREATE some partitions. The partition in which the OS is install is taking the whole hard drive space. If I delete the partition, I know I have to reinstall windows but this is where the problem is. The problem that I have is that I don't have a key that I need in order to install the OS or the cd. I tried some tweaks on how to get the key but they didn't work. The computer has a partition of 35GB [which is C:] and another EXTRA partition of 5GB that says [HP_RECOVERY D:]. When I explore the D: drive there are no files, even when I go to the folder options to select the "show hidden files and folders". Eventhough when I double click the D: drive a pop up windows appears displaying the following message:

Rcovery Partition

Warning!

This area of your hard disk
(or partition) contains files used
for your system recovery.

Do not delete or ALTER these files.

Any change to this partition could
prevent any recovery later

Is there any way that I could use the D: drive to reinstall windows? If not what are other possible ways to reinstall it?
Deicide764..... Did you try this little utility ? It should retreive your product key code for you .

dl65 Thanks for the nice utility dl65. Now that I have the product key, How can I reinstall the OS if I dont' have a cd since I bought the computer with the os already preinstall. If you have any idea or SUGGESTION please let me know. For now, I'm gong to try to run the computer from a start up disk and get into the dos to run the setup from the D drive to see if I can use the drive or not. I'll post back again.

Solve : Desktop icon in quick launch?

Answer»

I'm really ashamed but I cannot remember how I managed myself to put a desktop icon in the quick launch bar.

I have done that several times while installing mine's and friends' and family's PCs but I forgot totally the right procedure. Does anyone know it? Just drag the desktop icon to the Quick Launch toolbar. A shortcut will be added to the Quick Launch toolbar.Thanks.

Should I have a desktop icon in the desktop I for SURE will do what you say, but there is no such an icon, ... although I better should say that 'there WAS not' because I GOT an Windows UPDATE today and when it was installed my Pc restarted AUTOMATICALLY. What showed up afterwards was a brand new look. Most programs I had Installed were not LONGER there but there was one single item in the quick launch bar: the desktop icon. So, problem solved.IF u ever want to wickedley spread ToggleDestop Actions again,

just create a txt-file with the content

Code: [Select][Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
and save it as MyNewToggleDesktopSymbolOrAnythingElse. scf

when working with Notepad or other Win Txt Editors most likly u will have to put the name in "" to disable auto appending of the .txt extention.

regards
sinuraThat's a good tip. Thanks.Or, where it says "save as", where it says "Text files(*.txt)", there's a drop-down menu. Select All files, and save with the extension you want. Cool. Thanks. You're welcome. Please return if you have any more questions/problems with your computer.

Solve : Help menus will not open?

Answer»

In every program that I have (eg. Outlook Express, McAfee, Internet Explorer,
HP Printer) I try to open their Help menus.
I get a list of the items available but when I click on them, on the
righthand side a page comes up with the message *page not available* or

I've been able to get into these help menus before without being connected

My problems started when my son downloaded a p2p program which I have since

Solve : Excel: Deleting content of 1 sheet off another?

Answer»

I have got 2 excel sheet. Both have the same formatting and column HEADING etc. Lets call it Table1 and
Table2.

Table1 contains Tables 2 + other entries (and entries are mixed) eg:

Table 1:
Name Date Time Class
Bob 16 Jan 12.30 English
Tim 12 Mar 12.30 Maths
Dom 14 Jul 12.30 Science
Rob 18 Dec 12.30 PE
Pete 17 Jan 12.30 English
Sam 17 Feb 12.30 French

Table2 contain some of the entries in Table1 eg:

Table2:
Name Date Time Class
Bob 16 Jan 12.30 English
Dom 14 Jul 12.30 Science
Sam 17 Feb 12.30 French

I want to remove table2 entries off table1.Both the tables have thousands of entries. What is the best way of removing the content of table2 off Table1 so that Table one end up looking like this:

Desired outcome of Table1:
Name Date Time Class
Tim 12 Mar 12.30 Maths
Rob 18 Dec 12.30 PE
Pete 17 Jan 12.30 English

What is the best way of going about it? Please HELP. ThanksI would use Access to do this. I realize you may not have Access or, if you have it, you may not be familiar with it, so my suggestion may not appeal to you.

I would import the Excel tables into Access tables, then use a Query in Access to compare the two tables and produce the list you want. Then, that Query can easily be exported back to Excel. If you want more details on this, let me know.

As far as doing it in Excel, I don't know how to do that. I have some doubt that it can be done, but I'm just not sure. How many entries (row/column) you have in both tables?
It seems that the entries in Table 2 is duplicated in Table 1.
Is the data sorted in any way?

If there are not many entry and the data is not sorted, what I normally do, manually, is to put condition in a blank column and sort the data by the outcome of the condition then delete all the corresponding rows.

You know how to use VLOOKUP ?Thank you both for your help. Unfortunately, the data is not sorted and table1 has over 60000 entries and table2 has around about 5000 entries.

I tried putting a condition on the blank columns and was able to reduce some of the entries. Now I am looking into access to reduce it further.

Thanks.

Sorting in Excel is fairly easy. The Standard toolbar has two BUTTONS - Ascending and Descending - for quick sorts. More advanced options can be found under the Data menu.

Solve : Installing a program/Windows Installer?

Answer»

Okay, here's the deal. This started to happen after I installed Windows XP Professional (previously I had home edition). First, the resolution was very low, but it FIXED itself somehow. :-? Now, however, every time I start up the computer, it tries to install this "Photo Gallery," which it claims is on a disc. :-/ I don't think I have anything like that on a disc....
Stats- Windows XP Pro, Intel Celeron, 2.80GHz, 512RAM
I tried searching for the file, haven't found it, I've even messed around with the msconfig Startup and other stuff, although I still have a few other applications to try to disable. Hope you can help! If you need more info, let me KNOW!
Oh, when I cancel the installation, it gives me error 1706, if that's of any help.Let's COVER system health first. Please go to this post, follow the HijackThis link, download it to it's own folder, run a scan, save a logfile and post it here. Please zip the log and attach it if you can; otherwise, just post the text. It will take SEVERAL posts to use the second method. Here you go, I hope I don't have a virus, this is a good computer. If it is a virus, it must be a sneaky one. I frequently use Disk Cleanup, AdAware SE, clean up the Internet History, and occasionally use Norton Antivirus to scan it.I'm sorry, I don't see it. There may have been a mistake.

Under your reply, did you click "Choose" and navigate to the zip file? If not, please do that, and post again.

And don't worry, if there is a hijacker then it is removed, more easily than you think. Well, I don't know why, but it's not letting me attach it.

Solve : Diplay Reversed?

Answer»

Dear FRIENDS,
In my HOME computer, (P-IV- 2.4 GHz, Windows XP home edition, 512MB RAM, with office 2003) the MONITOR DISPLAY has gone UPSIDEDOWN as well as REVERSED! This HAPPENED while the kids accidentally pressed some keYs of the keyboard together, that is what they claim. I do not have any clue of really what had happened. COULD anyone help me in getting over this problem?
THANK you.Control+Alt + an arrow key often works.
Some cards like ATI have an icon in the lower right that will let you adjust the display as well.
