Solve : Windows XP Home Edition - New User?

Answer»

Hello to Everyone,
I am a new user to XP Home Edition and am a little confused with the different accounts, and the functions each user can perform, such as WINDOWS UPDATES, PC Maintenance, and Program Installation.

I do not want anyone to be logged on as Administrator on a regular basis, but I am not sure if the computer has been DEFRAGMENTED or updated properly when performing these functions while logged into my user account.

Q. Does each user have to logon on to their account and repeat the Windows Updates and PC Maintenance/Defrag processes?

I have read some info says that you have to be logged on as the Administrator to install programs and some info says that regular User's can install most but not all programs.

I wonder if our user accounts have more rights then they should because we are all able to download and install programs from the internet.

Q. Is there a way I can see if all our accounts should be able to do this?

Q. Also, when installing new programs are they always available to each and every user's account?

I ask this because my son downloaded a program called Bear Share something or other from the internet that I believe has caused advertising pop-ups while I am browsing the internet and logged into my user account.

Q. While logged in to your own account, is there a way you can you avoid the negative effects of programs that your kids want to use?

I recently installed a virus program and spyware remover from the internet and would like these programs to scan all the files on the computer.

Q. Does each user have to logon on to their account and repeat the virus and spyware scanning processes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Seriously confused  :-?,

No. Changes to the hard drive affect the disk, not users.

I have read some info says that you have to be logged on as the Administrator to install programs and some info says that regular User's can install most but not all programs.

Correct. System administrators must be logged in to install some programs. Limited users cannot. If you aren't sure which you are, go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. If you're an admin, you can do anything on the computer. If you're limited, you're... limited.

Quote
I wonder if our user accounts have more rights then they should because we are all able to download and install programs from the internet.

Indeed, that is a danger. However, it's the Admin's job to make sure the computers don't contract a virus. If a user offends the PC by contracting a lot of viruses, the admin can change the password for a while.

Quote
Q. Is there a way I can see if all our accounts should be able to do this?

The start > control panel > user accounts shows who has admin priveleges and who doesn't.

Quote
Q. Also, when installing new programs are they always available to each and every user's account?

Some. You may be able to choose to install only for yourself, if there are multiple users. However, by default all users can ACCESS the programs you install.

I ask this because my son downloaded a program called Bear Share something or other from the internet that I believe has caused advertising pop-ups while I am browsing the internet and logged into my user account.

Make sure you have an Anti-Virus application. This Post may be of use to you.

What kind of "negative effects"?

Quote
I recently installed a virus program and spyware remover from the internet and would like these programs to scan all the files on the computer.

Without knowing which one, I can't tell you how to do it.

Quote
Q. Does each user have to logon on to their account and repeat the virus and spyware scanning processes?

No. Again, you're affecting files, not users.Hello,

Thank you for your help Dilbert, I can now rest assured and save a lot of time from repeatedly running the virus, spyware scans, etc. on each user account.

With some of the info on the internet it is confusing. I read that you had to be logged on as the Admin. to do the Windows Updates, which is why I wasn't sure if they were updated properly because I was logged into my user account, not the Admin. account.

I also read to access the Admin. account you had to press F8 at start up and go into Safe Mode. I find this confusing because with my old OS - "98 SE" you could not access the internet while in Safe Mode.

Can the XP OS access the internet in safe mode, so you can access the Updates website?

The negative effects I was referring to with some programs are ones that have advertisments/spyware attached to them that cause pop-ups and while browsing.

The virus program and spyware remover I installed from the internet are AVG Free Edition from grisoft and Adaware from lavasoft.

Less confused  :-? ,
RobbyNo, you cannot access the Internet in Safe Mode. However, your account, if it is a Computer Administrator, IS an admin account of SORTS. It's not THE admin account, but that doesn't matter.

See, on my system I am not THE admin either, but I am an admin, and can do updates:

If your account says "computer administrator", you can run updates too, or set them to do it automatically. The updates will then affect all users, since these are disk updates.

Solve : Bogus windows?

Answer»

Hello. Looking for an answer. I RECENTLY bought a new laptop off ebay because the PRICE ended pretty cheap. A new hp for 400. Anyways when I received item it had the windows c.o.a. sticker removed and had a bogus dell oem windows install on it. I know this is illegal and the seller has been non responsive as well as ebay and paypal. All they care about is that it was paid for and proof of shipping. Here is my question, if I buy a full install of xp pro , will it come with a c.o.a. sticker I can put on this laptop to show it has a valid windows system on it? If not how do I go about doing this?Yes, a new XP box will have all you need. OEM version is about as cheap as an upgrade. It depends if you have a previous version of Windows to installthe upgrade version. (It doesn't have to be loaded, just available.)

Out of curiosity, what was the eBay item number? There may be some more recourse that way, depending on how it was listed. What is the difference between oem and retail box version? Is oem the disc that comes with new systems that people sell? Is it possible to get a valid windows with a C.O.A. STICKER to install where the other sticker was ripped off? I don't know what the difference is between oem and bretail BOXED. I have only ever used a volume licensed COPY of xp to install but with that I dont have any stickers, and that is what I'm after. Both are the same in content. The licenses are a little different. The OEM version is tied to use on that machine, whereas the retail can theoretically be transferrred to a new machine (if Microsoft agreees) once it has been removed from the old one. EULA's are available at the MS site.

The sticker itself is a moot point, unless it is a cosmetic issue. There are no sticker police out there, you just need to have that COA number available as proof of licensing, and of course to install. I think both versions should have them, but check with your retailer. The OEM does.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16837102062

Full retail (no upgrade) is pricey!

THANKS for your information. I am still going to try to get my cash back. I am worried this is a stolen machine and I dont want to be the one getting busted.I would still be interested in the eBay listing number to review, as I do a lot of business on eBay.

Solve : Installing The Os?

Answer»

Hello I am trying to install Windows XP Pro on my new pc but when I FIRST booted I forgot to plug in the keyboard. While xp was in the setup process I rebooted so it would recognize the keyboard now the computer will boot but won't let me install an os, just goes direcely to a black screen. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance. Is this a brand new build? Can you get to the BIOS? THis would show that the video is at least functional. Do you get any error messages? Is this a USB jkeyboard? How about some details of the system?Thank you for replying so quickly.

The computer is a brand new build. I can get into the BIOS just fine. I do not get any error messages.

The keyboard is not a USB plugin and seems to work fine now, that is I am using it to type, and after I rebooted I could use it to navigate the BIOS and everything. I forgot to plug it in before booting and continued with the install until it asked me to hit enter. At that point I OBVIOUSLY couldn't continue without a keyboard, and it didn't seem to recognize the keyboard no matter what I tried to do so I rebooted. Now after it boots past the BIOS the screen goes completely black.

The PC has a ASUS P5P800 SE Motherboard and a P4 650 3.4 ghz CPU. It has a Radeon 9550 256mb graphics card and 1gp pc3200 DDR duel channel memory.

Again I thank you for your willingness to help and speedy response. One thing I'm sure about - the problem is definitely *not* the keyboard. Let me ask you a couple of things. Not sure if they'll help, but...

1. Can you test the XP install CD on another machine?
2. Do you have an install disk for another OS?

Here's my thoughts: You haven't gotten the chance to hit ENTER to start yet, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say it might be a faulty disc. I'm probably wrong, but if it's attempting to boot from CD and the CD isn't working, then who knows... That's why I want these questions answered. If it works in another machine (you don't have to actually install it, just get it started and power it down regardless of success or failure, shouldn't hurt anything), then it's not the disc. On the other hand, I'm going out on a thinner limb, I'll say it's possible that the drive died right there for no reason other than being faulty.

That reminds me: With the power off, open the case, touch the metal WITH IT PLUGGED IN BUT OFF to ground the machine and prevent static electricity from causing damage, then check the cables. Make sure they're plugged in correctly. You say it's a new build - you put it together yourself, or is it a new PC with a brand name?Hello thanks for helping. I just put the cd in this machine and it came up just fine. Unfortunately I don't have another CD to try. I custom ordered it through SMK Superstore, and I didn't have to touch anything. They tested everything before sending it out apparently so it seemed to be ok before they shipped it.Well, if the CD works, it's not the CD. And if the CD-ROM works (I imagine it would) then I'm quite frankly stumped. Sadly that makes two of us... Thanks for your help though I appreciate it. Yeah the CD-Rom worked when the CD was going through the setup process before I can't imagine a reboot would mess it up.Neither can I. But I suppose stranger things have happened with computers...Yeah true... sometimes I could swear they are posessed.well I feel stupid now... I went into the bios and switched the boot order to boot up the cd rom before the hard drive and it seems to be working like a charm... thanks for your help everyone. I'll be back to try to  help other people or if I need help myself. Thanks againThe - wha - ? AAAAAUUUGH!!!!!!!Hahaha that's how I felt after I did it. A friend of mine suggested it and I said wow how could I MISS that. Thanks again for your help./me cries

This reminds me of a tech support call. This guy in Microsoft was helping a woman who said her computer just powered down for no reason. After 45 minutes, it became clear that there was a power outage. Now, this story is often exaggerated by saying the Tech Support guy told her she was "too stupid to own a computer". However, for the record, that's only what the tech support guy wanted to say but checked his tongue...

I'm not insulting your intelligence, I mean, we both missed it, but this just reminded me of that story. Oh don't WORRY I wasn't offended. I think I just over looked the obvious solution here. Yeah I have heard that story before... actually my computer help desk teacher told me it last YEAR I think. I thought the same thing.

Solve : Corrupt user profile W2K?

Answer»

Hello,

I had a corrupt USER PROFILE in W2K.  I created a NEW user profile but I didn't create a new password, only created a new user name thinking it wasn't necessary to ALSO create a password.  I never use a password with my Windows installations. Anyways, I now cannot logon to W2K at all because it asks for a password.    Is there anyway to get around this?  I currently have a dual BOOT setup with W2K/XP Home.

Thanks!

Solve : gpemdzko.exe file in Windows System Folder?

Answer»

Hello,

I am running Windows 98SE and was recently alerted by my firewall that a file/program titled gpemdzko.exe was trying to connect to the internet. This application is located in the Windows/System file and cannot be viewed unless the view is changed to show hidden files. When right clicking on the file, no version is listed or that it is from Microsoft. Also, I checked and the file/program is loading upon startup. I have NO idea what this file is and internet searches of the "gpemdzko" name have proved futile. I have been having a few slow issues with my internet connection. What I am wondering is if this gpemdzko.exe is bad news, can I delete it, or just what the heck it is! Thanks so much in advance. You're right, GOOGLE gives nothing on it.
I think you're down to 3 choices.

1, Let it access the net, not a good idea.
2, Delete the file & startup entry, but then you will never know what it was.
3, Do some scans & see what turns up, that would be my choice.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Highly recommended second Online MALWARE Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/Well, I have CA's ETrust Internet Security Suite and the Virus Scan along with the Spyware Scan did not detect the file however the firewall did. I also have the Ad-Aware SE program and it did not pick it up EITHER. It is so STRANGE...I just NOTICED you're on 98. Ewido won't work for you.
I'd run some extra scans anyway just out of curiosity, there are plenty of free ones out there, maybe A squared.
At least try the Panda one, are your own scanners fully updated?

[highlight]Edit[/highlight] A single file in your system directory with a funny looking name that starts by itself and tries to access the internet has got to be suspect. Thanks so far for the help - I ran the Panda scan and it did not pick up the particular file in question so I've obviously disabled the file from loading at startup and from connecting to the internet. I think I shall make a copy on a disc or something and just delete the file.

My next question is WRT to Panda, it picked up two spyware infections that I have not seen before with my other programs: one was in a downloaded programs folder and it claimed the other was in the registry. When I looked and searched for the two spyware infections listed - I could find neither in the registry or the downloaded folder. Any idea what's up with that/Panda?

Solve : Is it possible to install win xp twice??

Don't know why you would want to, and not sure about the activation scheme through Microsoft, but you can try.  Different user accounts seems more reasonable. What are you TRYING to accomplish?

Not without some partitioning utility UNLESS you do it when loading XP.

The reason being my sister has winme and has some files on it which she needs and currently has little hdd space(on C:\). So I'm THINKING installing winxp on a new fat 32 partition on the new hard drive she bought and making the rest of the partitions ntfs and installing xp there as well since its better than fat 32 but the filesystems aren't compatible so I can't drag from one drive to the next. I'm interested to hear if this is possible.

Wouldn't it be easier to backup the files on CDs, format the drive as an NTFS, and install XP on that drive? If there's little room on C: then installing another OS would be murder on what's left.Xp can read and write fat and ntfs partitions but what your trying to is well ott.to answer your question, yes.

I have done this (not on purpose..windows died and i couldn't repair) and it works fine. You just choose the install on boot.

But, as everyone else said..no point.

Solve : Problems logging automatically to my ISP!!?

Answer»

At this moment the Internet connection window that I get to log on to the internet through my ISP is one with no choice to make the log-in automatic. Until COUPLE of days ago, I used to get one window with a box to click to make the PROCESS automatic every time I turned my computer on. For some reason, out of the blue, the system in my computer changed that window to the one I’m getting now, which does not have the choice of automatic log-in. How can I get back to the old window or is there any other way I can make this process—logging on to the Internet—automatic once I turn my computer on? I will appreciate an answerIs this a hi-speed connection? EX. DSL

FlameYes, I have DSL connectionIt probably has to do with your ISP SOFTWARE. Have you contacted them? No, I have notYou should.  If its windoze 9x what whats your primary network login set to under control panel/networks? It should be microsoft family logon.
If it is delete all pwl files and reboot.DSL is an "always on" connection. It's not supposed to give you the connect window.

FlameNo not unless you use a dsl modem like a speedtouch 330 for EXAMPLE.

Solve : Permanent memory ??

Answer»

I have found a couple of porn shortcuts on my desktop, and porn photos in several folders. I suspect that this is the work of one of my sons, but don't know which. Every time I check, the cookies have been cleared,  the Internet Explorer history has been deleted and the "save history for_ days" has been reset to "0".

I have been told that my computer saves a permanent record of all activity that cannot be easily deleted, and have seen references to such on TV cop SHOWS.

Is this true?

If so, how do I access this history to see where my boys have been surfing? Will it SHOW me the times of use and access to each web site? (I will be able to tell which is doing what by the times.)

Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice.Get one of the photos in File Manager and check the properties. THe date and time will be of the download. You will then have your suspect(s).A key logger may help you but do you really want to know everything they do?topgun1.....  You might wish to create separate user accounts for each of your sons ( with limited access rights) you of COURSE would be the only admin........
Then your desktop wouldnt be cluttered with their (oops I forgot to remove the desktop shortcut ICONS)......... However if its a serious issue .....AS Fed has suggested a keylogger.

[edit]dl65 reminded me of the possibility that that dite may have caused a hijack. Therefore, until suspicions are confirmed/disproved, the link is REMOVED.[/edit]Topgun.   In XP The file you are looking for is:

C:\Documents_and_Settings\username\Local_Settings\History\History.IE5\Index.dat

(the underscores _ represent blanks)

The file is Hidden, System and is protected any time full Windows is running. i.e. you cannot access it if full Win is running

Winspy (aka SuperWinspy) should print the file contents in Safe Mode tho' I have never tried it. I use CrapCleaner to flag the file for deletion as part of maintenance clean-up schedules.

Anyone who has never deleted this file may be surprised how large it has grown and how far back the details go.  On my system it had grown to over 8mb before I became aware of its existence.

Good luckGX1_Man: Thank you, I will check that.

FED: Yes, I do want to know. I assume a keylogger is something that records every touch of the keyboard. That sounds like what i want. Where do I get one?

dl65: It is a serious issue to me. I don't want to seem to be giving them tacit permission to do these things by simply putting the evidence out of my sight. I wish to GATHER the evidence as proof, and confront the one who violated the rules of our home.

Dusty: AHA !! Sounds like we are getting somewhere !! If you attempt to access this in normal mode, do you get a simple text file? I have seen something like that, but that isn't what I want. What is Winspy/SuperWinspy, and where do I find it? I used to know how to boot in safe mode, but seem to have forgotten. Will you please refresh my memory?

Thank you all very much for taking the time to try to help me.

Press F9 while booting.I haven't used a key logger for some time, I think my kids are growing up.
Try this one from PAQ, I'm giving it a go now & it seems OK.
The only limitation (shareware) appears not to be able to copy the logged keystrokes but that shouldn't worry you.
Look around further down this page as well for other sneaky stuff.
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Paq-Keylogger-family-key-logger-Download-8907.htmlhackerweasel, I'm fairly certain it's F8. Topgun...

.dat files are not text files, I think they are binary files which need a specific program to read/interpret them and display the results on-screen.  Super Winspy is a free download from here and should run in Safe mode.

There is  more than one way to start in Safe Mode, I prefer pressing  F8 when booting and select Safe Mode from the options, logging in as Administrator.  If you Google for something like "windows XP safe mode" you'll find another method promoted by Symantec which you might prefer.

Ah, there are multiple ways. Makes sense, I suppose... hackerweasel, Dilbert : It IS F8 for safemode.

Dusty : You're right. Starting in SafeMode showed me the same file as normal mode -- wierd computer language. Where can I find Super Winspy, and will it fit on a floppy so I can download it at work, or must it be downloaded directly to my computer at home?Super Winspy is available here.... or from the url I posted in reply #10.

It's just 860kb so should fit on a 1.4mb floppy diskette easily.  Don't let your boss catch you using his facilities for private purposes 8-)Thanks, Dusty. I had to look REAL close to see tha color change on your links, but I finally did.

The download won't go to floppy, but tries to go directly to the hard drive. BUT .....the computers here stop the download completely, so I'll do it at home when the boys are out. When I get it, will I have to run it in SafeMode?

Thanks again.

Solve : All Wireless Networks Have Disappeared?

Answer»

I've got an embedded wireless on my laptop and a d-link router network.  Last night I was goofing around checking other networks in my range and suddenly couldn't reconnect to my network or any other.  I tried to reboot and the computer froze so I let the battery die while I went to bed and booted up this morning.  Well I've restarted okay but now my laptop doesn't find any wireless networks at all.  I do a refresh and it says no networks in range.  nothing... not mine or any of the neighbors.  I'm afraid the card crapped out but maybe it's just the settings?

I right clicked the network icon and then clicked "repair" on the wireless network but it didn't fix anything.  It just shows a big red X through the wireless.  When I check the card in device manager it says device working properly.  The device troubleshooter solution is to reinstall drivers which I don't want to mess with yet... I'll have to download them.  And how could the drivers get messed up anyway?

Everything was working fine until i connected to a neighbor's unsecure network... could they have sabatoged my system?  Is there a procedure I can use to check out settings and the embedded card?  The troubleshooter seems like a waste of time.  It seems the first thing they always say is reload drivers.  Could that be the problem?  Why?  I don't want to take this thing into the repair shop unless I know for sure it's broken.

System specs:  Gateway 4530GZ Intel Pentium(R) M, Intel(R)PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection, 1394 Net Adaptor

Do you have virus and Spyware protection? If you are running Windows XP, I suggest running a System Restoration. To do this, follow these steps... Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System restore. A new window will now appear. Make sure "restore my system to an earlier time" has a bullet point next to it, and click on the next button. You will now see a calendar. Click on the day of, or the day before he changed any settings. If applicable, make sure the TIME on that day is before he messed with any settings. Click on the date and time so that it is hilighted, and click on the next button. You will now see a confirmation screen. Make sure the date and time is correct, and click on the finish button. Your computer will now restart. Before it "saves your user settings" you will see a little status box. It may move rather slowly, so be patient. Once the system runs its course, the computer will restart. Login as usual, and see if your settings are back to normal. HOPE this helps

FlameThanks flame.

Well I'll put my DUNCE cap on now....  I reread the error message and it said "make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on."  I didn't have a clue what that meant.  Then I remembered that one of the function buttons on the keyboard switches wireless on/off.  DUH!!!

Fixed it in two seconds!  They really should update the device troubleshooting notes to check your keyboard!   8-)

I must have hit the button when my computer froze last night and I was trying to get it UNSTUCK.  Which brings up another question while I'm here.  When a laptop hangs up is there some quick way to reboot?  On my PC I can always just unplug it... not the preferred method, I know.  With the laptop I wait about 3 hours for the power to die... this rarely happens fortunately but when it does it's a pain.  Any WORKAROUND other than the power?

Thanks.
Glad it was fixed anyway    Come back and see us if you have any more questions

When I try to backup data, it says :searching for backup devices" it comes up with a list of destinations, but my cd-dvd drive (E in this case) does not show up in the list, so I added E:\ when I select it and hit "next" I get the FOLLOWING message "Backup file NAME could not be used". The file name comes up as E:\Backup.bkf. If I select another device such as a USB storage device it will back up. I want to use a cd or dvd but it won't let me. The cd-dvd burner will play audio and video fine so I don't think it's the cd-dvd. It may have somthing to do with the fact that it did not come up in the list to begin with. ThanksDo you have a direct writing program for the CDRW like InCD? What software are you using? You have to use something to use the CDR as a big floppy or storage device. What operating system? Has it ever worked as you envision? The OS is win XP pro. I am using xp to backup, Programs\acceseries\system tools\backup. This works when I use it to backup to my mass storage device. I don't understand the error message about the file name. I am at a loss. Thanks for the quick response.A hard drive is different than a CDR. What burning software is installed - Nero, etc., if any?OK I loaded Nero express 6 which has a backup program. all goes well until it asks for a disk I PUT in a cd-rw and it ejects it saying somthing like it is not the correct disk, put in the corect disk or configure the system to accept this type. Then it asks for a cd  cd-r  cd-rw dvd dvd-rw. I have tried all of them and the only one it will accept is a dvd. This burner was in another computer and worked fine with these same disks.

Also when I right click on that drive in "my computer" there is no option to format or erase a cd-rw disk it seems there is some compatibilty issue. I tried to find drivers for the burner, all I could find was firmware updates, one site said the MS drivers were ok to use.
More info, the burner is a nec ND 1100a.  When I try to use DVD Xcopy I get an error message "could not load drive Info"

Solve : SP-1 installation gone wrong, now XP wont start?

Answer»

This is my first post, and I did a quick search and didn't see my problem, so I hope I didn't look over something that was already in here.

Okay, I have a Toshiba Satellite S-...something or other, that, up until yesterday, was RUNNING Windows XP. I bought a usb 2.0 pc mcia card, but it wouldn't install correctly because I apparently didn't have SP-1 installed.

I tried to install sp-1, and then restarted. XP loaded, and I made it to the login page, and I got an error. I forget the exact message, but it was something to the effect that it couldn't verify windows or a license I think. I clicked okay, and tried to logon, but I just got the message again.

Figuring I messed up the installation, I restarted in safe mode, and did a system restore.

Upon rebooting, I found that this didn't help.

>.> Then I tried to tell the system to use the last known good configuration. (I think that was kinda dumb now, but I was flailing. ;_;)

I restarted, and I saw the os loader screen, then a really quick blue flash, and then the screen went black, and it shut down. It stated to restart on its own, and just went in a loop. Os screen for a bit, blue flash, black, restart.

It does this when I try to start in safe mode as well.

Obviously, I can get into the bios and such, I just can't get windows to start.

I started in one mode (I don't know which one, sorry) and it said that I had Windows XP SP-1, so I guess the installation was at least partially successful.

I have the system restore discs that CAME with the laptop, and if I press 'c' during boot it gives me the option to return to the factory image, but I (stupidly) have not backed up in a while, and I would very much like to save my information.

If I could just get the really important things onto my external before reinstalling everything, I would be eternally grateful. (And if I didn't have to lose anything, well, that would be fantastic, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.)

Please, please someone help me.Alicia:

Yeah, when i installed service pack 2 for the first time, Windows XP would not let me log on till i activated Windows again, because it was 40 days past the date i originally installed Windows XP.

You can try starting the COMPUTER with the system restoration CD and doing a repair installation (that is, if this option is available on the restoration CD).  Then, you can reinstall the service pack and activate Windows if you are connected to the Internet (or call the Microsoft phone number indicated if you are not).

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

If the option to do a repair installation is not available, the only way to get to your files is to connect the hard drive to another laptop (or to a desktop computer with a laptop-to-desktop adapter) as a slave drive and copying the files you want to the other computer, so you can then copy them to a CD-R or DVD-R or other removable storage media.

DocThank you Doc!

It doesn't give me an option to restore. ;_; So it looks like I'm about to venture into new areas of computer repair.

Well, if I managed to install that cd drive, this hard drive slaving thing should be cake, right?   ...right?!

(And, while I'm fairly sure it's my fault my laptop isn't working, I'd like to take this moment to blame windows. Stupid Windows! *shakes fist*) alicia250..... Could you clarify if you meant to say SP2 and typed SP1 in error or had you never updated your laptop ?

dl65  No, I meant SP-1. I reverted to the factory image a while back, and I guess I didn't remember to reinstall the upgrades, or I didn't get around to it because my internet connection is slow and not the most stable. I didn't go for SP-2 yesterday because all I wanted to do was to get my stupid USB 2.0 working, and I heard that there were some issues with sp-2.You got some issues with this, though. Probably would be best to download SP2 and install from CD BEFORE getting on the net after your next system reinstallation, which sounds like it will be soon.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?DisplayLang=en&FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5aThanks for the advice. I'll definitely follow through with that. 266 megs?!  It's a very very good thing that I have friends with highspeed connections nearby.

Man, all of this makes a girl want to get a new os. Something a little more idiot proof XDIt's not you. I think most of us have gotten a bit baffled by how Microsoft works. By the way, I'm using SP-2 right now. I have a USB keyboard and two USB mice. I also have a USB diskette drive. All of these little "toys" work perfectly.

Finally, Windows is the easiest to learn because there is an interface for almost anything and it's, ah, relatively stable
(compared to Mac anyway). You can't get that anywhere else (though other OSs are much more stable, they are also much more difficult to figure out...)My USB peripherals were working fine, I just didn't want to wait ages for files to transfer to and from from my external. A friend mentioned I could get a card that would let me use the 2.0 speed. *sigh* I suppose if I had been more patient, I wouldn't be in this mess.

Ah well. Live and learn, right? And I'm going to get that thing working at highspeed even if it kills me now. After I get windows up and running again... o.oHmm... I've been looking around online, and I'm not quite sure. What is the best way to get my drive hooked up to a different computer? I only have other people's laptops available, so anything that requires me taking apart more than my computer is probably a no go. I suppose I could look around for one of those enclosures that will let me use my drive as an external. If there's any other way, please do tell, and if not, know any good vendors in Japan, or that will ship to Japan for less than two limbs?

Thanks again everyone!A,
Lost track of where you were in the process.  Some ideas...
- try using an external Firewire drive (assuming your Satellite model has it).  Skirt the USB issues.
- (may be too late to be useful) have you ever created an Emergency Boot Disk?  My Tosh will boot from SD Card. May be ABLE to access files on internal HD then... to move, maybe repair.
- Tosh site has good support document library.  Driver UPDATES too.   www.csd.toshiba.com

also... Retrieving files, remember 'odd' locations...   Outlook .pst,   bookmarks,  App Data paths, etc

- Accessing your HD from OPM (other people's machines).  Ethernet... hook into same router, and on your machine turn on File Sharing. Should be able to Drag and Drop whole Folders  (hook up External Drive to OPM and control copying from there). Other connections work to...  Infrared, maybe USB (host  or master may be issue)

Good luck

Solve : How to make an editable list of folder contents??

Answer»

Here is specifically what I want to do-

I have ripped my ENTIRE CD collection to my hard DRIVE and would like to share the list of bands in my collection on some other forums.  I have Win XP and know of no way to do this.  It isn't even anything I have encountered before, but it makes me miss Windows versions with DOS compatibility.  *sigh*

At any rate, my cd collection is at E:/albums.  I want to make an editable text listing of the contents of that directory WITHOUT listing all of the subfolders.  For example, the band folders in my E:albums directory are 3 Doors Down, 10 Years, 12 STONES, AC/DC, etc.  THAT is the list I want to create as a text file and be able to edit.

Any TIPS? Code: [Select]cd e:\albums
dir > blah.txt

That should SAVE everythin in blah.txt (type it into the command prompt).
I forget if that's how you output to text files in windows but if it doesn't work you can always try:
Code: [Select]cd e:\albums
dir
And then copy/paste everything it gives you.
Thanks a bunch!

Solve : Network Router to PC via USB?

Answer»

I cannot get my PC connected to a network router USING USB SATISFACTORILY. PC is rinning Windows XP, SP2 and has OPTI PCI to USB controller installed. (No Ethernet Card) When I connect the USB cable from the PC USB to the network router (USB)(SpeedStream 6250), I have a very poor connection, so even pinging the Router has intermittent SUCCESS. This is unusable, for either configuring a home network or connection to the internet - I have not been successful in verifying either. Any ideas?

Solve : General Downloading Speeds Problem?

Answer»

Hi Guys

sorry to bother you again but im just sorting out little problems that have annoyed me for a while.

When i first got my broadband (1MBPS) i was downloading really well at speeds like 100 kb/s + but then after my computer got wiped and i installed the sp2 update, i started to realise after a few weeks that my speeds were dropping and i was only successfully downloading stuff if had loads of seeds (like more than 200), which is rare with torrents.

After this i thought i WOULD TRY p2p, have tried bearshare, limewire, ares etc but they are all really temperamental and rarely get over 10kb/s, regardless of how POPULAR the file is.

Im on windows xp, sp2 and as i say i think its to do with the installation of sp2 because it was fine when i had sp1.

Im on talk talk broadband (1mbps) with a adsl sagem [email protected] 800 e3 modem.

Any help would be appreciated cos its really frustrating, im sure you can understand.

Thanks.

p.s. Normal DOWNLOADS from websites are fine and d/l really fast.

Solve : Adminstrator Access?

Hello.  I have just bought a Dell computer from my sister in law with Windows XP.  She had her and her husband set up as users.  I changed the names of the users to mine and my husbands name and added a third for his mother.  I have installed two new programs.  I had some problems so I rebooted and now any CD I put into the drive does not register.  I think that I have access problems of some SORT, but don't know how to fix them.  When I try to log on as one of the other two users it will not let me.  I guess I am LUCKY it lets me get into this one.  I hope that is enough information for someone to help me.

Thanks

Do you have the install/restore cds that came with the pc originally ? ( just in case they are needed )

What is the tag number on the Dell MACHINE ?  ( just in case we need it )

dl65  I had installed two programs and wanted to check if they were working, but one needed to register VIA the internet and this computer isn't connected so I tried to exit the program...it wouldn't let me...so I ended up rebooting somehow.

I am sure that my sister in law has the CD's SOMEWHERE..maybe...she actually bought the computer from some place where people drop off dells that are not what they wanted...or something like that.  I have another Dell with Windows XP Media addition.  Can I use those on the other computer if all else fails.  Anyway, I rebooted again and now I can get into the other two user accounts, but the CD's are not being recognized there either.

I am not sure what you mean by tag number. Quote

I am not sure what you mean by tag number.

THe service tag is affixed to the outside of the case - 6 digits or so. It is also able to be seen in the BIOS (F2 at boot). Thanks for all your help.  I found that Windows XP has a backup system that lets you restore the system the way it was on any given day.  I restored it for a day or two before I started messing with it and it is now working fine.  Thanks again!

Solve : defective hard drive?

Answer»

A few months ago one of my friends had a defective harddrive.  At the time, I posted on here inquiring if anyone knew how to retrieve info. off the old harddrive. Someone suggested freezing the hard drive. I tried it and recovered all the data. I had to freeze it three times but it worked each time. Some of my computer tech friends were skeptical but are now believers. Thanks for the help.I think I mentioned that and I am glad that it worked! (Sometimes those urban legends work out.)  SuperDave.....  Oh yes , I REMEMBER that well ...it was back in January of this YEAR.......( if my memory serves me ) .....did you use a plastic bag or just put it in as it was ?
That trick works most of the time but , not always....... .glad to hear it worked for you .

Cheers and thanks for the update......

dl65  We wrapped in a plastic bag and stuck it in the freezer for about two weeks before trying it. After the FIRST try we were thinking about WRAPPING the drive in two gel packs to see how LONG we could keep it running.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

CHECK foe viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure if it is properly configured and terminated.

SOUNDS like a stop error.  Next time it comes up, you'll see a bunch of numbers near the beginning of the error.  Write those down and post them in here.  Also, just as Windows starts loading hit the F8 button.  When the menu pops up, see if you can load it in Safe Mode.I hope you have an  anit/virus/malware  program installed  and running in the BACKGROUND"all the time" and  also  make sure it is  updated frequently  and the upgrades installed.
Have you downloaded any  new programs or  software  lately?

ps...  get another  512 stick of ram  when  u can afford it...   your computer will run  MUCH  faster afterwards*If you don't see a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) try to stop the reboot process.

Power up the laptop, tapping the F8 key about once per second (or wait for the keyboard LEDs to flash, then tap the F8 key).  You should see the Windows Advanced Options menu.  Select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item to stop the reboot CYCLE.  Hopefully instead of rebooting it will now stop on a BSOD.  If you get BSOD, copy the "exact" error message text and numbers and post here.  This information can be used to search Microsoft Knowledge Base and/or Internet for possible causes and resolution.

You could also try booting into the normal "Safe Mode" or the "Last known good configuration" item from the Windows Advanced Options menu.If anything else fails...

To troubleshoot startup problems

1.  Restart your computer. Immediately after the screen goes blank for the first time, press the F8 key repeatedly. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If the menu does not appear, restart your computer and try again. Use the cursor keys on your keyboard (your mouse will not work) to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER. Windows XP attempts to start.

Solve : missing dll file, must reinstall windows?

Patience please, I'm new at forums. I am running Windows 98 on an older machine.
After uninstalling a program I cannot reboot. I have a message, "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows". I am missing, (at least) a file called msvcrt.dll. I do not have a Windows CD to reinstall. I do not have any backup disks.
(I know but I'm trying to resurrect this for someone else.) I do have a msvcrt.dll file on a floppy from another computer. How can I get it where its supposed to be? Will that HELP? Quote

I am missing, (at least) a file called msvcrt.dll.
How do you know? Does it say in error message? If so, please post ENTIRE error message.
What program did you uninstall? Thanks for asking. I GOT it fixed. FYI, Behind the "must reinstall, etc."error message was another error window saying COULD not find missing file msvcrt.dll. I copied that file from another computer (Win Me) and then opened the sick machine in Safe Mode and used MSDOS command prompt only to get to A: drive. Then I copied the file to C:\windows\system and REBOOTED. The programed I had removed was a preloaded communications program. Now making backup DISK!Nice job

Solve : Windows XP re-install problem....?

Answer»

Okay, big problem here (at least to me...) If somebody could help it would be greatly appreciated. So here's the story: I was having some problems with some memory loss so I DECIDED to reinstall XP (had worked in the past.) However, while reinstalling the power went off. Now the hard drive seems to have lost it's volume label (MBR, I think.) If I boot up with a boot disk and fdisk it's only shows one drive C but it's actually the boot disk 41,000 bytes.... I pulled the HD and PUT it into another computer and looked at it under computer management and it shows the primary partition as bad but the logical 2nd partition as healthy (it was partitioned as C and D.) I think I might be able to reformat with fdisk but I don't want to lose that information. I've tried all the solutions I found here fdisk /mbr, fdisk /cmbr C:, ETC, no luck. Any ideas? Also, if this turns out to be fubar - if I reformat the bad partition using another computer will it erase the data on the 2nd partition. sorry for the book and thanks in advace for your time.FDISK is a program for giving drives a partition (whether a ROOT partiton, or an extended partition)

Using FDISK will usually destroy your data (from what I have been told)

(Data = Date-ah)

If you would like to fix the master boot record, at the DOS prompt, type:
C:
A:\fdisk /mbr

If you have an operating system, such as Linux, that uses the master boot record to store its boot information, you will have to reinstall its boot loader. It will not affect Windows XP from what I understand, I have tried this on Windows 95. (Why dont you wait until someone else stops by and verifies this information)

Solve : Difference between windows exe and com?

Answer»

I have a problem.
A windows program does not start properly
under windows while it is with exe extension.
After renaming the extension to com
it works well.
I have no idea.

Try the info found here... BASICALLY looks like different compilers... same reason a .JPG can be randomly renamed to .gif - they are different formats and windows relies almost entirely on the extension to determine what to do when a FILE is selected.

http://filext.com/file-extension/com

D.
We have no idea either...since we don't know what program ...or what Windows version for that matter.A com file is the same as an executable file with a few differences.  One is the SIZE, a .com file's MAX size is 65280 bytes.  The .com can be put onto a .exe file and not affect the way a program runs because what makes an .exe an .exe is the first two bytes being set to 0x4D and 0x5D.

That being said, I don't know why your change made a difference.Nice explanation, Anodoin...

Solve : Screen says "Going to Off mode" as soon as I boot up..?

Answer»

Can someone please tell me what I can do to fix this? I asked my FRIEND and she said I probably need a new video card, but to fix that would I lose everything stored on my computer?

When I boot up my computer a BLUE square comes up saying "Off mode in 5 sec" then turns off. First try the monitor on another machine and see if it does the same thing...it may be the monitor.
Re-check all your settings in Control Panel/Power Management as WELL.Thanks, but I have an older monitor that I tried as well and it does the same thing> I can't get on to my computer to change any settings  Try booting in safemode...to do this keep tapping F8 on startup and before you see the Windows SPLASH screen. Thanks! Will do once I get off work

Solve : Cd drive not being detected by windows?

Answer»

My CD-RW and DVD-R drives are not being detected by windows, it WANTS drivers?? It started acting this way friday, neither system restore nor uninstalling the devices and restarting the computer seem to help, any ideas?Has anyone been monkeying inside the case? Are you the only one with access to the machine? Most importantly do the drives show up in the BIOS (which you get to before the Windows logo screen)? Any unusual events lately? Can you share any model numbers with us? Are both drives connected to the same cable?I don't know the model numbers, it's my home computer,so only I USE it, The cables are connected properly, and they're on one cable. I don't think dell has a traditional "BIOS" menu, do they, if so, I don't know how to get to it.F2 at boot will get you to setup, which is as close as you can get on a Dell. Are the drives both SEEN there? They should be set to "AUTO" and may even name them.

What was the exact error message you got, or how did you become aware of the problem?

What is the model number or service tag? (You can see it after pressing F2 on  screen OR it may be on the outside of the case.) Some models have lights on the motherboard if there are problems. At this point we just have to guess, but post  back with some info.  It says they're there in the setup menu, if you want my product key it's:
EDIT: Windows Product key removed by Fed.Because I can & it seemed like the right THING to do.No, we do not need or ask for product keys. Good job, Fed! The service tag is what we need - it's 6-7 letters and numbers, again on the case itself, or in the screen you get to when you press F2.

Solve : Download Problems With Windows XP?

Answer»

I'm have a really frustrating issue that's been PESTERING me for a while...When I try to download a video file from Google Video, for example, the download will begin, then a few minutes into it will stop & tell me it's completed, when it's only downloaded maybe 10% of the file.
I have lots of free space in my hard drive (40%) and every so often it will complete the download,no problems. But more often than not,it'll quit on me.
I have wireless broadband connection & I'm running Windows XP/Service Pack 2.
Help?! Where are you trying to connect from geographically? In the US or outside the US?

I often have this problem. If for some reason the download is interrupted (bad connection to vid server, bad connection to ISP, etc.) the download will report itself as finished, even when it isn't.You STATED that you are on WiFi, do you have a great SIGNAL? Try moving closer to the WiFi router to see if its any BETTER. its not the problem with windows xp i have tried download something outside from my country and certain times that thing happen.. maybe its because of the video you wanted to download...I'm in New Zealand. It doesn't seem to be a geographical problem, though.
I have a great wi-fi signal.Sometimes there'll be no problem,other times,like right now,it's a problem!
What the pop up window will typically say,for example, is "120kb of 60mb completed" and below it: "download complete".
I can't work it out.No problem DOWNLOADING even large files from Limewire and the like.
Just from applications on the web using "save target as". Can you post a sample download link?another option. try using download accelerator like free download manager. maybe that will help you with your problem. if you don't like those, that is a temp fix while you try figuring out what's wrong with your computer.

That did help for me before, but you could give it a shot and let us know how it goes :-)DLoad accelerators and managers sometimes create more issues than they solve...i would wait until we have more info and have tried some other solutions before introducing them into the mix.Downloaders won't work with what the OP is trying to do anyway. Quote

DLoad accelerators and managers sometimes create more issues than they solve.
Number of them, are loaded with all kind of malwares, and in many cases they don't deliver, what they promise to do.
Some may help with broken connections (especially with dial-up), but you have to be very careful, which one to use.

Solve : Can only get blue screen at startup--think I might have screwed something up?

Answer»

OK, so I have a fairly new build and things had been going fine until I tried messing with stuff.  I had a copy of a Dell XP Pro SP2 cd that I got from a friend and everything had been working well.  I tried using the product key from my old XP disc for activation, but it didn't accept it.  The 30 day activation thing was running out, so I figured I'd try installing from my old XP disc (I believe it was before SP2 was included on the disc).

I put the disc in the drive, clicked on "Install Windows XP", and the computer started doing its thing.  It restarted, asked for the activation key, I typed in the old one, and it started installing fine, or so I thought.  After about halfway through copying over the system files, it popped up with an error message saying it couldn't copy "rpcrt4.dll".  I took the disc out, cleaned it, RETRIED.  Still no luck, so I hit ESC to skip copying that file and continue installation.  My logic being that it'd be better to skip a file now, than abort the installation halfway through (I think I was wrong).  Throughout the installation, there were about a dozen files that didn't want to copy, and I skipped copying them over.

Now, I've come to a major roadblock.  Whenever I start up, the computer will go through the bios start, but as soon as Windows TRIES to load, I get a blue screen with the following message:  STOP: c0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to start because RPCRT4.dll not found.  I've tried booting from the CD, but I just come to the same message.  There's about half a second of the black screen where you can usually go to safe MODE or something, but it doesn't seem right.  There are 2 options at the top that say "Load XP Pro" or whatever--both say exactly the same thing, and the arrow keys don't seem to do anything to select one of the options.  I also tried hitting F8 repeatedly to try to go to recovery mode, but there didn't seem to be any response with that either.  Inevitably, whatever I've tried LEADS me right back to the blue screen and I can only reset or power down.

I have a really bad feeling I've screwed it up pretty hard...I'd like to be able to save any data on the HDD, but it's not crucial.  Right now I'm wanting to just have some solution short of buying a new HDD and trying to start from scratch.  Thanks for any help! You can legally use your friends XP CD, IF:
You legally own the license to your own copy.

What I recommend:
As long as you have a legal CD license:
(Of course you do)
Use your friends install CD, and then when you get the activation prompt, call Microsoft, an tell them the truth:
"I decided to install it on a different computer instead of the one I used to have it on"
They will help you with the rest of the process. If you get trouble, remember to clearly state you already have your own copy of XP, but you are using a different disk since yours is damaged.

They may at this point offer to send you a new copy of the same disk, with the same built in CD key. Why did you use a copy of a Dell XP CD if you had your own ? ?
The Dell CD is tied to the hardware it shipped with...according to MS it dies with that Dell no matter what happens.
You will need to format that MACHINE and do a clean install with YOUR XP CD in order for this to work.

Solve : Mouse cursor problem?

Answer»

When I'm in Internet Explorer the little "egg-timer" which denotes something is loading flashes MOMENTARILY NEXT to my cursor arrow every few seconds. This has only recently started happening and only HAPPENS in IE. I've run both Ad-Aware and Spybot checks, also a full anti VIRUS scan and they all have come BACK clear. I find it very distracting and am slightly concerned that, although seemingly innocuous it may be more serious than I think. Can anyone help?
