Solve : Unable to log on - Domain "computername" not available?

Answer»

Help!
I have a DELL desktop with Windows XP Home edition. All was well and everytime I switched on it started and showed me my desktop. That was until yesterday when suddenly I was faced with my user name and a password box! As I have not SET up a password I pressed return and received the following MESSAGE.
"The system cannot log you in now because the domain "computername" is not available"
I have since been able to login using the safe MODE with networking but despite repeated attempts I am unable to do so normally. Tried setting up a new user but that doesn't help. Also did the chkdsk/f to fix any errors but again no joy.
I am a novice and really could do with some help.
ThanksDoes anyone else use the computer / any new profiles other than yours / tried doing a restore to an earlier DATE then running AV & AS scans?

Alan <><  Yes I restored to two previous checkpoints but to no avail. I have also run virus software, spam software as well but without joy.
The PC is only for my personal use - no other users. It has automated updates for windows and spycatcher.
I have also tried changing the computer name but again the same message comes up indicating the new name.
JayAny more suggestions from anyone PLEASE?Check the Event Viewer and post the Event ID

MS Office has the same feature. I have to admit THOUGH, its a bad habit to get into.
The feature is called "Autocomplete" and is in at least Office 97 and up
I've not delved into AutoComplete so MUCH, although I thought it only worked if you TOLD it to do it?
I could be wrong, been a long time since I've used MS Office.

OpenOffice frequently has security updates. Especially recently.
Yes, but most of the updates ALSO include BUG fixes or improvements too.

The whole point is that its supposed to be almost exactly the same as MS Office
Well, I'm glad it's not or it'd be too depressing wen i wanna download stuff, i just type it in on google

Solve : Need help for computer's internet WinXP?

Answer»

I am having issues with my computer's INTERNET lately. In the last 3 weeks, I've managed to get it going at only 100 kb/s or less. It all happened after a random brown-out power outage thing. and since I have had issues with it. I used to get a good 4600 to 5000 kb/s average speed. All the other computers in the house have been working perfect, except mine. I have been led to believe that it is either a hardware issue with my ethernet card, or a function on my system that was changed from the power. Does anyone have any idea on what to do for this? I'm running WinXP SP2, fully upgraded, and Norton Anti-Virus 2006. I have run multiple system scans with Norton and have no viruses and such.If everyone ELSE is connecting OK then I'd try replacing the NIC.  They aren't expensive and easy to replace

Solve : Laptop keeps reloading but won't start up!!?

Answer»

Hi, Please help!

This is my Hubby's work laptop and I need to get the work on it!!
Anyways:

I have had a lot of trouble with this laptop being REAL slow etc, I took it to an 'expert' who 'tweaked' it and it was OK for about 2 weeks and now won't load up at all! it keeps loading in windows xp and won't atually load in properly, it just starts again! it has done it about 5 times now and I need some valuable work off it!!

It is a Dell laptop and mostly has stuff saved on the D drive! Please help!!
A couple of suggestions...

1. Boot into Safe MODE and get what you need off of it, reformat and reinstall windoze
2. Take it back to the "expert" if you trust him/her and have them make it right

Alan <><  If you cannot go to Safe Mode, just press (F1) or ANOTHER F, depending on your Computer, to Enter the Setup and change the Boot order, this Usually happens when there's an error with the CD Driver (Try Disabling it first).umm. this sounds erriely familar too. oh wait i have a laptop right now im working on that is doing tyhe same exact thing. i bet she won't be able to get into safe mode i bet she'll get to the menu and press safe mode and it will look like its going but wont it will just restart again. from what i can TELL from the laptop i have the system is corrupt like no other. so contact dell and have them instruct you on doing a repair install. and is how that works for you. does it have xp home or pro on it??

Solve : Deleting my history???

Answer»

Hey, I sometimes delete my history to keep my privacy (lol). But recently, I have RAN into some trouble, sometimes some of the sites STAY. I.e. When I type in the letter "g", in my adress bar, it comes up as one of my recent google searches, The one just happened to be "steam sucks". I've deleted my history, cookies, and files but I can't seem to get rid of this one search. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks. You'll need to tell us what browser you're using. But if you're using Internet Explorer or Firefox you can USE CCleaner to clean out your internet history and it will also takes care of any other clutter on your computer. If you decide to give it a try configure it according to this guide.seems complicated  and dangerous (I'm not great with computers lol)Not really and you'll only have to set it up once. After that you can REMOVE your internet history, temp files and other clutter by pressing one button.

But if you want to do manually instead you'll need to tell us what browser you're using.Microsoft internet explorer 6Haven't got IE6 installed, only got IE7 but it should be mostly the same thing. Have you deleted your browsing history in IE by selecting tools, internet options and then delete under browsing history?yupTry this then:
Select tools, internet options.
select the 'Content' tab and press the 'AutoComplete' button.
Press 'Clear Forms'.Btw. if you have the possibility of upgrading to IE 7 I would highly recommend this. Not only is it more secure but you can also clear all your browsing history (including autocomplete) from the general tab. I should huh lol.

When I try to clear forms, it lags me like a bit...Hey, it works. Thanks man  Your welcome

Solve : Windows 98se Cab files?

Answer»

I would like to extract all .cab files into one file but before doing so can anyone give a reasonably accurate guesstimate of the eventual filesize please?

ThanksWhy do you want to do this? You'll get a lot of STUFF you won't need, such as drivers for hardware you don't have. A duplicate install of 98se takes up about 365 MB, so allow 1 GB and you've got plenty.

PowerToys for Win98 has a built in cab viewer...The reason is not important and I already have a cab viewer.

Thanks for the guesstimate.I'm guessing you are building a bootable Win98 CD for someone... Quote from: PATIO on July 16, 2007, 08:19:38 PM

Go to the bottom of the class Patio, your guess couldn't be further from my purpose.

Clue: it's connected with MS Batch.exe - but I'm just experimenting - and I don't want to Copy the .cab files to HDD, I want to Extract them to the hdd.

Thanks for your INTEREST.

Solve : Problem regarding with user policies?

Answer»

I have change in administration configuration/user police/system.
now i have PROBLEM is that i donot open any file or folder.
even gpedit.msc file or even cannot open IE 6.0 or command prompt.
i m administrator.
when i double click any file it will give me an error:" This function has been cancelled due to restriction in effect on this computer. please CONTACT system administrator".

please give a solution...

Are there other Administrator-level accounts on the computer?  If so, log in as ONE of them and test the setup to see if it's just that account that's locked out, or if it's a system-wide thing.

If there's an account not locked out, edit the properties of a file and see what kind of permissions apply to Administrator.  Perhaps you accidentally DENIED him everything by default.

Solve : Hibernate- different problem?

Answer»

Everytime I use Hibernate and I awake the computer, the Case changes from regular to Capital letters.  If I hit the "Caps" key, I get small case, visa versa.

Also the browser is "wacky".  I can't OPEN any emails.  I can access my EMAIL home page, but can't do anything else.  I plan not to use Hibernate any more, will just have to keep starting up the computer everytime I WANT to use it, but am
wondering why "Hibernate" could cause such weird issues. what windows do you have?Sorry, I am useing XP, Media Editionto disable it go to control panel > power options> hibernationThanks, I know how to disable it, I was just wondering why I get the problems associated with activating the Hibernation status.  Guess it will remain one of those "computer mysteries".  ummm. im not sure maybe another member or two might have a theory Quote from: janey9 on July 19, 2007, 09:11:57 AM

So, you have to restart your computer to resolve this?

I have a similar problem; actually, it seems to happen when coming out of Standby, not Hibernation.  I discovered that hitting the Shift key once or twice resolves it.  I believe Logitech's SetPoint software that I installed for my Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo is the culprit.

What keyboard and mouse do you have?  Did you install software from the keyboard and mouse manufacturer? This is a new computer (Gateway) came with mouse and keyboard and I haven't changed a thing.  I'll TRY your suggestion about the Shift Key.  It's not a big thing, but I would like to the Hibernation option so I don' t have to keep re-starting the computer.Sometimes computers just have these problems with Hibernate and Standby, usually caused by a piece of hardware or a drive not being fully compatible with these power saving modes.
I know if I resume from Standby, my PC is very slow compared to how it was BEFOREHAND, and resuming from Hibernate sometimes caused other problems, so I tend to avoid either and just shut down. Thanks for your help.  I will follow your suggestion and just shut down each time.  I wonder if they ever try useing  these operating systems or just load them and forget it. Did you try my suggestion about the Shift Key?Not  yet.  I'm at work, but will try it when I get home tonight.  I hope it works for me.

Solve : SONY VAIO Keeps Shutting Down..?

Answer»

I had my sony VAIO Laptop for about 1 to 2 years and it has been acting wierd.
It happend today.
Before that, when i start up windows and surf the net, or general applications the computer gets so got, that i cant even keep it on my lap i have to buy a docking fan station, to help to cool down. IT gets so hot that when i put a ice in a plastic bad and put it on the back of the computer it melts it. I dont know but from the DAY i got it, it has been like this. overheating. I contacted sony support and they told me that it is normal but it is not normal i brought it back to the store and trade it in and got the same one it is the same thing. ok now the problem now..

I push the pwer button, and the fans are spinning so fast that i think the motor will fly off. and then after i get into the winodws logon and open my computer in about 2 or 4 minutes it shuts down. No error nothing.
When i put the fan docking station it is ok bu after 30 minutes or so when it get so hot it shuts down i think that this MIGHT be a overheating problem, but i cleaned the fans and everything. Please this is my only hope. THANKS.  Definitely sounds like an overhearing issue, though I don't know much about laptops, especially Sonys. But I've READ a lot of threads recently regarding them and they seem to be a bit troublesome? does it have xp?Check the local shops for a price on a cleanup...unfortunately laptops aren't really built for user maintenence.
The problem with trying it yourself is this usually makes it worse.
Clearing the air VENTS is best done from the inside out...not the other way around as the gunk has nowhere to go but further inside the machine.

Solve : Disk defragment problem?

Answer»

Hi to all

When I start the computer the scandisk occur. When I start that scandisk the computer was hanged.So.next time I skip it.Now I TRYING to disk defragment but I can do this.Without E: disk defragment start. But I WANT to start it for E:

The error is
Disk Defragment has detected that chkdsk is schduled to run on the E:
Please run chkdsk /f.

The meaning of this error I don't know.

What may I do?Pls someone help me. Select Start --> run.
Type CMD and press enter.
type chkdsk e: /x /f and press enter

After its completed you should be able to defrag.

Thanks Deerpark
But can you tell me what is X.
I type only x or anything other.if so then tell me. I really don't know. The switch /X forces a dismount of the drive. In order to check a drive with chkdsk, the program needs to be the only one using the partition. So if another program is using the drive, chkdsk stops this by dismounting the partition. If you don't use /x, chkdsk will ask you if you want to dismount the drive. So /x just skips that question.

You can also type chkdsk /? to get an explanation on the various switches like /X.is e your second drive or another partition on the same drive? And remember when adding commands you need to leave a space between the forward slash and command.....

chkdsk e: /x/f
Not chkdsk e:/x/fThanks all of you to guide me.
As you said I did it.After chkdsk these are appear.

Solve : Windows NT -- Why my words are deleted everytime I boot my computer ???

Answer»

Hi,

I type some words in the following file in Windows NT to add  path
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
However, my words disappear everytime I reboot/turn on my computer and I need to re-type the words again.
Could somebody tell me how to fix this PROBLEM

Thanks very much.
What do you mean by "I type some words in the following file"
Are you modifying the contents of a file?
Renaming the file?
PLEASE explain, and tell us what you are trying to do. Hi,

I add some words inside the files. I didn't amend the content or rename the file. I just add some contents those EXISTING words.
Actually, I am trying to add "host" to a URL and it is annoying to add those words everytime i reboot my computer.
Thanks very much for your help. It's sounds like you have some protection installed that monitors and reset the hosts file. Some firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware programs will do that. What kind of protection do you have installed?

Solve : small system tray Question?

Answer»

I have a dell Inspiron B130 NOTEBOOK, with Windows XP home, 1.4 gig processor, 40 gig hard drive, 256mgs of ram. I am  running AVG free virus and spy ware and running ccleaner. Now my problem is a small one on my task-bar, my power Icon and the volume Icon have disappeared. I have right clicked on the task-bar, and then clicked properties, then customize, and made sure that the volume and power entry's say always show and then I click OK but, they are never there. Is there a way to get them back? Try this.  Go to Control Panel and double click on Sound and Audio Devices.  On the Volume tab, do you see a box for "Place volume icon in the taskbar"?  Is it checked?  If not, mark it and click Apply and OK.  Did that work?

Likewise, open Power Options in Control Panel and select the Advanced tab.  Do you see "Always show icon on the taskbar"?  Is it checked?  If not, mark it and click Apply and OK.  Did that work?Yes that seems to have solved this problem, thank you very much!
Update, after shutting down the computer last night and RESTARTING this MORNING the Icons are now MISSING again. I got the sound Icon back by using the above steps but the power Icon wont come back. Also is there a way to make this change permanent?

Solve : Something in XP slowing 3MB download speed?

Answer»

I am having a dilema and would really appreciate help.

We have been subjected to dial up until this past year when our local telephone provider put in fiber optic lines. Through the past 10 YEARS I have had EARTHLINK dial up and have now switched to DSL 3.MB speed. My problem is that something from within windows XP (home) is causing my INTERNET speed to remain at the dial up level rather than the 3.MB speed. Two other computers here at home are working just great - one with a Media Center OS and the other an XP (home) as well.

Have gone through the entire registry and removed anything and everything having to do with "earthlink" but am still having the rediculously slow speed. A "computer" friend came over and booted up with a Linux OS and the speed was just fine. We checked the network card, no problem.

Can you suggest something else to try or a different forum where I might find additional information? I have googled everything I can think of and have had no success.what OS does the problem computer have? have you TESTED it in safe mode with networking? tap F8 rapidly before windows loads..

what protections do you have?

Warning do not use safe mode instead of normal mode to surf the web because in safe mode only the basic things are start to make your computer run and your protection progrgam will not be running and thus not protecting youThis computer has Windows XP-Home, SP1 and currently running Norton. However, this problem existed while using PC-Cillin and then without any anti virus program, so it isn't the programs which are slowing things down.why don't you have SP2 its very important in protecting your computerHow are you connected ? ? Wireless or thru a router ?
How is the network connection setup ? ?
Was there any software for the DSL setup that needs to be on the problem machine ? ?The two of us are networked through a router. Haven't any idea how the network connection is set up. Could you be more specific and I will look?

There was software but we were told by the service provider that we did not need it and the tech who set the computers up said the same thing. Why would the other one work just hunky-dorey and this one not if it was a networking issue? Any clues?maybe try a different cable running from router to computer (if wired)

this is really STRANGE to me... i'll boot up and it will get to the desktop, but i can't run My Computer, or My Documents, but i can run ie or firefox no prob.... any time i try to open said programs explorer crashes and i cant do ANYTHING... plz help T.T   btw, im on Windows MEhave you done anything before this? ie. Formatting hard drive(s), or installing/uninstalling programs?actually i did, i uninstalled all of my moms old business programs, deleted ALOT out of my documents(296megs), and it started doing it after i got my internet hooked up...i don't think deleting things out of ''my documents'' would cause explorer to cease functioning, as it RUNS off vital windows files, but i'll ask anyway; what did you delete from ''my documents?''.just like old pics, txt documents, etc..... im not completely computer eliterate but this has me stumped .... and very angry, but i didnt uninstall anything vital... just started acting up last night... i think its just old and finally dying, and it is an E-Machine wich i've heard are notorious for problems at old AGE.... get Ccleaner(without yahoo toolbar) run cleaner
then run issues scan (LEFT hand menu) save when it askes you to, I recommend making a folder somewhere called Ccleaner and saving it there. then fix problems, run a couple more times to make sure. the issues scan helps clean out your registry.

then go to start run and enter " chkdsk /f" without the qoutes and notice the space bewteen k and /f. a pop up will prompt you to run at start up press y and then enter. restart your computer, LET it run then once your back on your account do a defrag.

start
programs
accessories
system tools
disk defragment

let that run then restart and check things out.

Solve : usb adaptor for null modem serial connection - com8?

Answer»

I have a laptop that doesn't have a serial port and need to connect via null MODEM serial connection to an HP B2600 cpu running Unix.  I have a Keyspan usb ADAPTOR I USED on a different laptop, which worked fine because the com port defaulted to COM3--which Tera Term Pro can handle.  On the new computer, the port defaults to com8, which cannot be handled by Tera Term Pro because it only handles up to com4.  Does anyone know a way to modify the com port numeric designation on Windows XP to be com4 or below, or know of a freeware or inexpensive serial terminal emulator that can handle a com8 designation of the com port?

Solve : Windows Xp Switch Users?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home Edition.

I use to be ABLE to switch user to another user and still leave my programs running. I can't do that anymore. I have to completely Log Off in order to get to another user. I know you can fix it by going to:

Control Panel >>User Accounts >> Under Pick A Task Click on Change The Way Users Log On or Off >> Then check Use Fast User Switching...Hit Apply Options.

When I hit Apply Options it just brings be back to the User Acounts screen and when I click on Change The Way Users Log On or Off it says that I didn't check the Fast User Switching Box.

Anyone know how to fix this? I am completely stumped. When you go Start >> Log Off, isn't Switch User there? Does it just instantly log off?

Oh. I see what you mean. Just go into the menu you've been to (change the way users...), tick the box, go apply, and on Start >> Log Off, see if you can Switch Users.

But my guess is that there's a bigger problem behind this that we don't know about. That doesn't seem to work either.

But what I have noticed is I have no XP Themes. So maybe that's part of the reason?

LIKE the bar on the bottom of the screen (IDK what it's called) with the time, start, and little icons is gray. Have you download/run/installed recently anything recently?

Try system restore to a day before this happened.
If you don't know how to do it, follow this guide. Don't worry, it wont delete any files.

Follow these steps:
1. Go to Control Panel (catagory view)
2. Click on Performance and Maintenance
3. At the left side under 'See Also' click on System Restore
When you're in the System Restore Menu
1. Make sure the 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' circle is ticked and click Next
2. In the small calender, click on a date 1 day before it started happening and click Next
3. Make sure all programs are closed and click Next again.
The computer will take slightly longer to boot but you won't loose anything like recently saved work but recently installed programs might be uninstalled. Quote from: Help and Support Center

To turn Fast User Switching on or off
You must have a computer administrator account on a computer that is a member of a workgroup or is a stand-alone computer to turn on or turn off the User Fast User Switching feature. Fast User Switching is not available on computers that are members of a NETWORK domain.

1. Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
2. Click Change the way users log on or off.
3. Do one of the following:
• To specify that a user's programs remain running when another user logs on to the computer, select the Use Fast User Switching check box.

If you select this option, programs do not shut down when another user logs on to the computer. For example, if you are typing a report and your child wants to check e-mail, you can log off using Switch User, the child can log on, check e-mail, and then log off. You can log on and return to your report without losing your place.

• To specify that programs shut down when users log off the computer, clear the Use Fast User Switching check box.

Programs automatically shut down when users log off the computer, and the computer will run faster for the next user who logs on.

When Fast User Switching is turned on, Serial Keys will not work. Serial Keys is an ACCESSIBILITY feature that provides support so that alternative input devices (such as single switch or puff and sip devices) can be used in place of the computer's standard keyboard or mouse.
Notes

• To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
• Fast User Switching cannot be turned off while multiple users are logged on to the computer.

Read through that, and see if it can help you.

Also, see if you can get a screen-shot of your scren having no XP Themes.Darkblade, you beat me to it! Malware can MESS up fast user switching, so a check is called for...

Agreed.

What protection do you have, and when was the last time you scanned for infections? My system restore for some reason was turned off? So I can't back track.

And I have a lot of different things to remove things off my computer.

Like..

Avast-AntiVirus
Lavasoft- AdAware
No Adware
Spybot-Search and Destroy
Symantec AntiVirus
SpywareBlaster
and I do the System Tools Disk Cleanup

all of these regularly.

I don't know how to take a screen shot, but when I am at the home page and I right click and click properties, under the Themes section it only says Windows Class, More Themes Online... & Browse...Is this a home PC or a work PC?  If it is a work PC, you need to make sure you are not on a Domain network. Its a home PC. I have no idea whats wrong. I know its no different, but for the process of testing:

Press the Windows Logo Key + L
Does it go to the switch user screen then?
Or a "Locked Computer" screen?
or does it logoff? It goes to a Locked Computer Screen.

Solve : Windows XP won't open expect in safe mode?

Answer»

My computer (sony vaio laptop) shut down and now will only load in safe mode.  I have tried setting it back to a previous date, that didn't work.  I have tried going to the prompt and trying several things suggested from VARIOUS website and still nothing.  I have gone to last KNOWN good configuration, nothing!  I can get to nothing on my computer but the very minimum.  I have files from I can't lose. Please help! When you're in safe mode, try disabling/uninstalling all the obvious hardware -- mice, webcam drivers, sound card, etc.  See if you can boot into WIndows regularly after that. When you try to enter Normal Startup mode, do you see any errors?
If so, what do you see?

What virus protection did you have installed?
And will Safemode with Networking work?

Possible causes:

Possible solutions:
If no Antivirus, download and install Avast Antivirus from www.avast.com
Fix any missing files
Windows Repair Install It won't open in Normal.  It just continues to restart itself.
Yes I can load safemode with networking.   I can't get online from that computer at all.  I am using my daughters RIGHT now.
I have a virus protection but I can't remember it's name.  I think it is Mc affee?

Solve : Unidentified Files?

Answer»

I've been getting some strange unidentified files on my computer.  They are annoying and take up space.  I am unaware if I can delete them.  This file folders are nothing but strange (seemingly random) numbers and letters, such as -

            d22ff5d998b52027fbd08a

The folder is marked as 'read only'.  Inside the folder are 90 files, taking 13.8 MB of space.  Inside are many dll files  and several files named locdata. (insert various numbers here).  Also, has some setup files and a folder I can't GET into called 'wcu'.

I am running windows XP.

What are these files?  Are they critical?

Can I safely delete them?

umm sry i cant help u with anything but can u tell me what dll means? They are data files a lot of program need.
Check this out

Hey Augphoto, where is this d22ff5d998b52027fbd08a file located?
What OS is this?
Have you downloaded/installed/run anything RECENTLY?Where the data files installed is what bothers me most.  I have a main (C:) drive in my tower but, they didn't install there.  They installed themselves in an external drive which houses nothing but my photos.  I do not desire anything else on this drive, as it is reserved for my photos only.

I am running XP Home Edition.

Unfortunately, I am downloading stuff all the time.  I, also, installed quite a bit lately so, it's hard to say whats been done at the time of the strange file sudden addition. Are there any Norton/Symantec programs on this machine ? ?Nope.  I hate Norton.  I use SystemSuite by V-Comm. DLL stands for Dynamically Linked Library.  Think of it as a communal program that any other program on the OS can use to it's benefit.

Windows would never store important system files on an external drive unless you actually installed Windows on that drive, which you've already said you cannot.

Are you dumping stuff directly off a digital camera onto this drive?

THey should be okay to delete, but as always, I'd backup the data if you're not sure.I know what DLLs are.

Yes, I DOWNLOAD photos directly from my camera's memory CARD to this external drive.  I place nothing else on this drive, so I don't know how the culprits got there.

I think I'll try deleting them and see what happens!  Thanks. Quote from: Augphoto on July 18, 2007, 04:40:24 AM

The explanation was for Clinton D.

I know "hidden" on a camera's flash card are usually a bunch of software for the camera itself to use, perhaps that was copied over sometime, it's happened to me before.

Solve : Nasty Windows Problem, Parts Of Page Missing?

Answer»

The easiest way for me to show you the problem is to demonstrate it. If you will be so kind as to go to continental.com you will see the words Continental Airlines printed in the upper left hand corner. Just below them is a blue bar which runs from the left side all the way over to the right. This bar has selections for various gray pull down menus. My problem is that on my computer the blue bar, and words are not VISIBLE. When I place the cursor over where the blue bar should be and move it across the page left to right the pull down gray menus do appear. So then, It is all there, but can not be seen. I this problem on other sites as well. I am using windows xp pro. Please help if you can.

I believe the blue bar is called a navigation bar. On my machine it is there but not visible. If you move your cursor over where the blue bar is supposed to be and one of the links on it then a gray pull down menu appears and is fully visible. It's driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance Don What browser are you using / tried Firefox   http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Antivirus and antispyware installed, updated and run regularly?

Alan <><  Problem is there with explorer and firefox. It is not a virus or malware.   At least I don't believe it to be. Firewall is up and all anti-virus is working as it should.Regardless of what browser you are using...have you tried the obvious first?

Like clearing your browsers' cache and then reloading the page?  I've been to the site and the page loads fine, as well as the blue navigation bar.

Another thing you might want to try...make sure javascript is enabled within your browser(s).

Go to the FOLLOWING page and look for the browser you are using and follow the directions:

http://www.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=23852Yes indeed. Been There, Done That.  Called HP (Fairly New Machine) They Don't KNOW Either. Called Microsoft They Say Call HP Or Pay $80.00. Other Computer In House Does Not Have The Problem.

Thanks for your help, Don If it's a fairly new machine i would exercise the warrant  on it.Well are you using a video CARD, or on board. It might be a lame onboard card. If you DONT want to get a replacment so soon, or just to see if the card is the problem, Go to Start>Run> type in dxdiag and go to video and turn the hardware aceleration down. It might be worst quality but it works.I also have this problem, I am using IE7. I've tried the solutions suggested, to no avail. I remember a while ago checking something which allowed web pages to load faster (I use dial-up) . Sadly I don't remeber what it was so I cannot undo it. Will follow your progress, but at least you are not alone!I wonder if the original poster also has IE7?Indeed I do have IE7 but the problem is also with firefox. So I don't think it has anything to do with the browser. Graphics adapter? Resolution? Is the problems with video ONLY with these sites. Everything else is totally normal?Every thing is normal otherwise. I am going to swap out the monitor and play with resolution settings etc. I'll let you know if I come up with anything asap. I think the bar with links is called a navigation bar. Quote from: docfletch on April 09, 2007, 10:06:16 PM

Indeed I do have IE7 but the problem is also with firefox. So I don't think it has anything to do with the browser.

What version of Firefox?

Honestly, I don't believe the problem is with your video card or the settings related to...of course, that's just me.

As far as I can tell, you're talking about one site, "Continental.com", and you're having problems with the navigation menu on the site displaying correctly.

Does it only pertain to this site...or others, as well?

What makes you think it's your video card?

If it were me, I'd be concentrating on my browsers' settings, or any malware protection software I have installed that may be preventing the browsers from running scripts.

I know you're probably pulling your hair out over this one, but instead of blaming the card...troubleshoot the browsers and malware software as far as you can.Hold on there, I never said nor implied the video card. The Firefox is the latest level (2.2 I think) . I was only using Continental as a example. Other sites do it as well. The navigation bar does not display at all. I only knew it was supposed to be there because I see on the other computer I have.
When I move the cursor over where it supposed be, then the pull down menus appear  as I move the cursor along it's length from left to right. It is not my virus stuff causing it and it is nothing to do with pop up blocker. Quote from: docfletch on April 10, 2007, 02:25:29 PM

I didn't say you did...BraZillion mentioned the video card.

I'm just stating the obvious.  Apparently the browsers have an issue with either images or script on the pages.  So, the only thing I'm suggesting is to concentrate on the browsers first, before the video card.

Solve : DirectX 9.0??

Answer»

My game is running really SLOW, i tried upgrading to dirext 9.0.

The official website said, to right click the game client. and add one of these to the target.

engine 0                               (directx 5.0)
engine 1                                 (opengl)
engine 2                                (directx 9.0)

so i added engine 2. after installing 9.0.

"C:\Program Files\Tibia\Tibia.exe" engine 2

and i get this error

Video Surface Allocation Failed. (error code 13.)
Please choose another video graphics mode.

I heard directx 9.0 would improve fps speed.
(which i need because right now its like 5 - 10 fps which if horrible)

And i got that.. any help?

Click here to get the latest DirectX.
I DOUBT a newer version of DirectX will help your FPS.what game?? has the problem also been there?? do you have the cds to reinstall the game?? if so, uninstall the game, install directx 9 RESTART the computer, then reinstall the game Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 15, 2007, 08:38:39 AM

The game is Tibia as seen in his post (the Tibia.exe, MMORPG). And do you have intergrated graphics that might be interfering with (maybe) your other graphics card.I dont know. i might just say SCREW it and buy more ram... it was acting fine until my buddy f-ed up my computer! Sorry to say but... buying more RAM wont do anything about the DirectX9 problem that your having... Can you check if you have cards connected in your PCI/AGP/PCIe slot? they are usally white or kinda Tan (The Slots, not the cards)... Quote from: Bruce_Bliss on June 15, 2007, 01:38:25 PM

Let's say you have a spankin' new computer with all the latest hardware, and you're running DX 5.  Then, and only then, will upgrading to a newer version of DX improve anything, because your current version wasn't using the card to it's full potential.  Otherwise, just like all software, the longer it's been around the more bloated it gets.

Check to be sure your graphics card can handle DX9.

Solve : weird pc?

Answer»

Hi folks.
My pc is doing weird things. I cannot connect to the Internet and some programs will not open on the first or second attempt. The Internet connection is really slow and it sometimes will try to connect when I don't want to.
I did have a message saying something about rundll32.exe error, but I only got it the once. Since then it has not appeared.
I am using Windows XP SP2 with an Athlon AM processor (whatever that means). I hope one of you can help me, because it is driving me ape and the wife swears its all my fault!!Need...more...info...gasp

antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed /

when did it start happening / did it ever WORK right / installed any new software?

Alan <><  I use AVG and Zone alarm. SP2 installed. It worked OKAY until I got a virus that I thought had been fixed a couple of weks ago. It was FINE for a bit and then this started happening. It worked right about 3 months ago but it is a bit old. I have not installed any new software for a while.
Hope that's enough for you. I would have put all that before but I am a Luddite when it comes to these things.
Many thanks
Bill
Have you run any antispyware scans?  I'm assuming you're using Zonealarm free.  That is only a firewall. You need to download and run Adaware / Sypbot / AVG Free AntiSpyware for starters.

Alan <><  The problem looks like it is with my ISP as I can access everything else apart from AOL, even though the machine is slow. I can access the Internet through IE so I will download Spybot later.billh5773....... Quote

Here's what I would suggest ...........
Download and install ...... CCleaner....... ( don't install the optional yahoo toolbar)  Get ccleaner at .... http://www.ccleaner.com/    ...... Install it, but don't run it yet.
Download and install AVG Antispyware ........ ( free version)
Get it at ..... http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
After it is installed, get the latest updates.  Don't run it yet.

If you don't already have it, D/L Spybot from .......http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
once you have it installed, get the latest updates.......... Don't run it yet.

Ok ....... now, open ccleaner and click on the cleaner icon...... ( the brush)
now click on Run ccleaner ( button is in the lower right CORNER) when it's finished running ........ click the run cleaner button again and everything that was FOUND will be removed ..... ( ccleaner will not remove anything required by your pc )

Next reboot into safe mode.........

Now run your AVG anti-virus......... if it finds anything, make note of what was found and then remove everything found.

Now while still in safe mode, run AVG Antispyware ........ and again remove anything it finds.
Now reboot back into Normal mode and report back as to how things are running.

Solve : Computer crashed... How do I access recovery CDs without Windows??

Answer»

I was on my desktop and suddenly I got a system error pop up. After pressing OK the system completely froze for a half hour. Without any other way to restart I hard rebooted the computer. Now it takes me to the DOS window where it asks me to start the computer in safe mode, safe w/ networking, safe w/ command prompt, last good configeration, start windows normally, etc... I tried all available options but I get a quick flashing blue screen upon start up and the computer quickly reboots itself. I have some important files that I don't want destroyed, If the computer is inoperable I'd like to somehow retrieve the files and see if I can load them onto one of my flash drives or external hard drive, but I don't know if it's possible.

I have an HP Pavilion that comes with an in-system HP Recovery - usually it helps a lot, but this time it won't load (gives me blue screen when I try accessing it). I also have an APPLICATION and Drive Recovery DVD and Windows XP Operating System CD. Unfortunately, though, I can't seem to load either. When I pop them into the drive the computer just ignores them and takes me to the computer safe mode screen.

How do I get the system to load the CDs without Windows? I tried going to BIOs and setting order to CD-ROM first (which I read to do on a site), but the computer hasn't changed anything. If I have to enter DOS to load the CDs then I need to first know how to enter DOS without Windows. Thanks!

Operating System: Windows XP Home
PC: HP PavilionYou are not going to need to load DOS...

When you first start your computer, does it give a key combination for a boot menu?
Usually the key is F10 or F12
Press that key while the BIOS screen is up, and select the CD-ROM drive

What is the error that you are receiving? Is it a STOP error?
Also, what antivirus did you have installed?

Possible causes:
General corruption
Disk Error (power failure)
Virus Error is a bluescreen, it reads:

STOP: 0X00000024 (OX001902F8, OXF89A46FC, OXF89A43FC, 0XF81C18E9)
ntfs.sys - Address F81c18e9 base at F815C000, DateStamp 3b5e36a9

EDIT: I had Zone Alarm Pro anti-virusI lied... you might have to use DOS
Can someone post a good NTFS COMPATIBLE DOS system? Or a way to enter it?

Your error message relates to your NTFS file system being DAMAGED. You will need to run the following command:
Chkdsk /r
I was able to access the Windows XP cd by pressing "r" during reboot. I checked the repair option and it blue screened. I'm guessing this means I'll have to use the install  option on the cd. I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking the install option is probably a destructive install (meaning it will delete all personal files). I want to try other options before I do that, though, because the files I have are pretty important. I still can't access the data recovery dvd for some reason... like Zylstra said, if anyone knows how to get into DOS it WOULD be greatly appreciated  Actually if you are looking to retrieve your data you should consider swapping that drive into an XP machine as a slave drive and see if your data is still INTACT...
If so copy and burn what you need ASAP.
Trying to repair it in the methods you have mentioned will get you further away instead of closer.Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy with classes. Anybody know any good sites that explain steps on transitioning the primary master drive of one computer into the primary slave drive of another? I'm guessing it isn't too hard (I hope), but I'd like to look through a decent guide.

Solve : Need help making a computer 'stuff-up' proof.?

Answer»

I have a spare computer running tinyxp.
I have setup the computer and put games on it (from www.gamemakergames.com).
Now im going to set it up at my grandmothers so my cousins (5 and 2) can play on it.

I want to be able to :
Stop them from accidentally moving and deleting games from the DESKTOP.
Disable right click. - Found the solution to this. (Registry tweak).
Stop them from viewing/accessing/opening any Folders (My documents, My computer ect.).
Clear out everything in the Start> all programs menu.
Make the only shutdown and log off visible in the start menu.

I think thats about it. I will edit if i think of more.

Now for the pc SPECS:
OS: TinyXP
RAM: 128 MB
Processor: Intel Celeron

The OS is probably the only one you want but i put the others just in case.

Thanks.

BTW: Whats better Celeron? or Pentium 1?For Processors:
You are going to have to give us more information on what type of processor you are looking at. Pentium 1's are ancient, and probably not a good solution. As for Celeron: They are not bad... but they arent great. Try a CoreDuo, or a Pentium 4.  (wait for other users input first)

TinyXP, is hardly a complete version of XP. I dont understand why you would want to use it. How much HDD space do you have? Perhaps you should convert back to a regular Windows XP instalation.

The best solution for your problem is most likely to set up user accounts. This will keep all desktop settings, icons, etc seperate from your account.

Click Start>Settings>User Accounts
Create an account for your cousins. You can give them individual accounts, or just set up one account for them, or use the guest account. Make sure to give them "Limited Access" accounts! This will prevent them from making changes to your user account settings.

After you do that, be sure to give your own account (the one you use now) a password.

Disabling deletion of some certain folders, right click, etc, may require commercial software... which requires money...
Giving them limited user accounts should be fine. Guest account is also suitable...
Giving yourself a password for your account assures you that they cant get into your account.

If you need further assistance, feel free to ask The reason why i said Celeron or Pentium is because the spare computer currently has a Celeron, but i i have a spare Pentium 1 processor. I really don't want to fork out money for a core duo.

I have the regular xp installation cd, but i don't want to have to go through with all the activation stuff. Thats why i put on tinyxp.

I set up all the accounts, but my cousin still easily messes things up easily. Not as in uninstalling and deleting random things. More moving and renaming by accident. (He is only 5, and this is the first year that he has been using computers).

I'm going to use Google, but would you recommend any programs to do this?

Thanks.

Edit: I have a 20GB HarddriveIf you do have a celeron in that PC already its going to be better than a Pentium 1 as celerons didn't come out until the Pentium 3 generation.

As for stooping the users from messing up the PC Do as Z says and make time limited access accounts, you can use the group Policy EDITOR if you want to set more specific restrictions but thats probably a bit advanced for your needs

Also XP wont run very well on 128 megs off ram, i would suggest you run win 2000 or win 98 instead.

in windows 2000 you can set the rights for every user on ever folder.. you can on XP as well but you need to change a few things first. they made it harder to do because off all the people who denyed there users rights to the windows and program files folders and then couldn't login to there PCs ... Okay i will stick with Celeron.

Ive got limited accounts, but unfortunately that isn't limited enough.

I really want to run xp. It seems to be working fine right now, and im not going to have much on it.

Would it be okay to remove the cd rom and floppy drives? (I have a 2yr old cousin who climbs chairs to jam computers with toys.)

ThanksUnfortunately I can not help on the software side of things in this regard, though about removing the drives I would highly discourage it - you could live without a floppy but without a CD drive your PC in the long run would be adversely affected. Unless of course if you have flash drives for storage?

May I recommend a case such as the Lian Li PC-101, which has a lockable front panel - though this particular model may be a bit expensive for the purpose it is a way that you could restrict this sort of physical damage.

Also, if the above is not appropriate then I'm sure there is a program I've heard of that can lock the CD Drive from being opened, if that would restrict the damage? If you don't want to BUY a new case:
Why don't you go and fine a cabinate, drill a hole in the back, and lock the cabinate. That way, they cant actually get to the actual computer.
Just make sure the computer doesn't get too hot if you do. With a Celeron I doubt it will, but can't be too careful I guess.. Quote from: jahuro on July 17, 2007, 04:33:58 AM

Do you know if TinyXP is based on Home or Pro?

If it's pro, go into the Control Panel under the Folder Options.  Under the View tab, at the very bottom, if you see "Use simple file sharing (recommended)," uncheck it.  This allows you to see all of the security settings allowed through the gui.

After this point, right-click an object (file or folder), go to Properties, and go to the Security tab.  In here, you'll see a list of user accounts at the top, and at the bottom you'll see permissions.  Select the account you want to restrict, and then in the permissions at the bottom, click "Deny" next to the ones you want.  For a lot of stuff, you could probably only allow read access to the file, so they can't rename it.  Be careful with this though -- some programs will need write-access to work properly, for saving settings and what-not.

Unfortunately if it's XP Home, these options won't be available to you. Quote from: beanhead07 on July 17, 2007, 08:18:23 PM

Celerons actually run quite hot and can be prone to overheating. Thats one of many reasons why they are now considered to be outdated. For example my CPU is immensely more powerful than a Celeron though it runs at nearly 1/2 the temperature. 25-35C / 50-70C

Solve : PC files may have crashed...?

Answer»

Okay, I was playing a game, and all of a sudden I went to a blue screen...then it turned off by itself.  So, I try to turn it BACK on, and it goes to a blue screen, and shuts off again! (Same with safe mode.)  I can't use a bootdisk because it ASKS for the PASSWORD which I dunno it because it wasn't my computer, and my grandpa who had the password forgot it. So booting to LINUX is not happening.

So, is there any other solution other then reformatting? It may have been some crucial windows FILE that crashed and got corrupted or something...

Suggestions?

Edit: Using Windows XP.Open up the machine and take out the CMOS battery for a couple of minutes and also jumper the CMOS "reset" pins on the mobo. This should clear the password. And where should he go from here ? ?

Solve : Bad Drive? Virus? Whats going on with my machine!?

Answer»

My computer crashed a couple weeks back, tech said due to viruses, and now I have AVG, Zone Alarm and Ad Ware.  I scan my system 3 to 4 TIMES a day.   Ad Ware crashed, computer froze.  I tryed to restart it, came back in 1 hour and it was still stuck, so I shut it down manually. (I pressed and held power button)    Now when I turn it on it tells me my windows profile may be corrupt, and that it cannot find it, then it gives me a temporary desktop, which I cannot make permanant  changes to.  My music files are gone from my program Renoise, but all programs I installed are here....Is my computer going to die?  While SEARCHING for my music I saw one of my VST files get passed, so I know it's still here!  Are my files still salvagable even though I cannot see them?  Grateful for any help!

RogerSounds very much like a problem I solved recently when a PENTIUM processor was not seated correctly with the heatsink/fan causing freeze ups and other problems. This happened soon after my friend let their supposed 'guru' fiddle with their system. Re-seated processor with thermal grease-end of problem. Not saying this is your problem but check out all your hardware thoroughly.Thankyou, will doOne more thought-you may want to do a XP Repair if all your hardware checks out ok. The XP Home Edition has that neet little 'repair' utility on the CD which leaves all your files intact and REBUILDS and repairs any Windows stuff that is out of whack.
I had to do this on my own machine recently and it works like magic. Are you familiar with the process?well I don't have any disks for the system, I bought the computer off a person....

Is there anywhere I can find it for d/l on the net?

You can but you wont find any help with that here since it's illegal.Well now, you have a problem! You will need an XP Home disc. Either upgrade or full edition. I used an upgrade to accomplish my repair.I'm not sure if a borrowed one would WORK or not but it's worth a try. Here are the instructions on how to do a "REPAIR ONLY".

Go to the following site for complete instructions on how to do the repair.

Thanyou deerpark, had a feeling.  I somehow came upon an HP version of what your talking about, but I'm sure that will be of no use...... But I do remember my fan buzzing incredibly loud the first time it crashed, since then it has been really quiet....

Solve : copying files from the desktop?

Answer»

Is there a way to copy certain files from my HARD drive to a flash drive but limit that copying to those files which have been modified SINCE 7 days previous to the system DATE?you ALREADY asked this in another thread.
If I can't do it from the desktop, I THOUGHT that it might be possible to accomplish the same thing in a DOS batch file.you need the batch file. I suggested you get Robocopy in the other thread.
Thanks. I'm all over it!

Solve : Is PC World article statement about System Restore wrong??

Answer»

Just read an article in PC World about System Restore, about how the restore points are dependant on each other. If one is corrupt it MAY MAKE them all not useable.
PC World, August 2007, page 128.

“Restore points aren’t complete backups. Each hold only the changes SINCE the previous restore point, and System Restore may need to use all the restore points on your HARD drive so as to revert to any one of them. In that case, if any one restore point is corrupted, they’re all useless.”

To begin a fresh start the article tells you to turn off System Restore for all drives then back on. This deletes all existing System Restore files and creates a new one upon which the following ones are dependant.

From Wikipedia:

“System Restore can be configured to use up to a maximum of 15% of hard drive space. Old restore points are discarded in order to keep drive usage within the specified amount.”.

The Wikipedia statement seems to contradict the article statement.

Is the PC World article just plain wrong?

It's wrong. You can free hard disk space by removing all but the most recent system restore point.
Yea, that article just didn’t make sense.

HDD space is not a problem.

Can I backup old restore points, before Windows overwrites them?

If so, where are they stored?
Most SRPs become useless after a fairly short time, as other changes are made to
the system. Very old system restore points are useless and there is no point in keeping them.

There are kept in a hidden folder called "System Volume Information" in each PARTITION on your system.

Yes, I see the folders now. Windows won’t let me do anything with them anyway.

Thanks,

Ken

Solve : HDD Experiment Went Haywire?

Answer»

I messed up my Hitachi lap TOP TravelStar HDD by restoring an image from another  lap top HDD (Fujitsu).

Now my Hitachi HDD won't boot because somehow it's stuck with this Fujitsu DEVICE driver.

Re-partition, Re-format did NOT fix the problem.

Maybe I need to reach DEEPER and re-initializing my Hitachi back to a blank slate so that everything's pristine and WORKING again. Am I correct?

So far I couldn't find any tool that can reinitialize HDD in Hitachi site (hgst.com) or elsewhere. Anybody has any idea?

Solve : Command Prompt Issue?

Answer»

I right clicked on the command prompt one DAY, chose properties, clicked the "options" tab, and under the display options, selected "full screen" simply so that I could run the command prompt in full screen. When I got tired of full screen and decided to go back to the "window" option, the command prompt no longer ran in full screen, and ran in window mode again. The unfortunate part is that programs (such as batch files) that run using the command prompt, start up in full screen. So, if I were to open up "randomfile.bat", it would run into full screen until I use Alt+Enter. This is the same for other programs that utilize the command prompt, including installation programs. When I do properties on the command prompt, the "window" selection is still selected, and there are no options in batch file properties. This has also become an issue in other forms of scripting. The screen goes black for a second, then RETURNS to normal as if nothing ever happened when I execute certain programs.    So if you have any IDEA how to make so that the Command Prompt always runs in window form, any help is appreciated of course. I use Windows XP.Find command in Windows Explorer in the WiNNT/System32 folder...right clik it and select create SHORTCUT. Drag the newly created shortcut to the Desktop.

Delete the original one and you should be GOOD to go....Because I wasn't whether you wanted me to delete the original CMD or the original shortcut, I did both. After making a new shortcut and deleting the original shortcut... nothing changed. After making a shortcut and deleting the original target, the original came back after clicking on the shortcut of course and nothing changed. The command prompt and scripts still run in full screen. ;_;You can set the properties of each batch file to run minimized/in a window/etc.

Solve : Moving a hard drive?

Answer»

Now, im not too sure about anything really so it makes searching for an answer really hard, so ill just describe as good as possible.

I have 2 computers. 1 old, 1 new.

The run the same OS, but my old one recently screwed up and wont come on.

Im wanting to transfer all my documents, software, registry ETC. (EVERYTHING) from my old screwed up computer, to my new computer.. And Im guessing what i would need to do is just take the HDD out of one and put it in the other.. but i dont know for sure... please correct me if im WRONG. and all help is appreciated.

thanksJust hook up the HD to your new computer. Hopefully, you new computer doesn't have more than one drive. If so, you'll have to disconnect the slave drive in order to connect the old drive. I wouldn't advise you to transfer programs or anything related to the registry. This could really foul up the new OS but you should be able to get all your old files. Bonne chance.By HD do you mean the harddisk?

And why would it cause probs if its copying everything exactly as before just onto a new computer?

thanks for the replyBecause of the fact the machines have completely different drivers, components etc.

Programs need to be installed on the new machine to run properly

Travel Here for instructions on using the Files and settings Transfer Wizard...the old computer will start up.. but wont come on screen (and yes, the screen works).. pretty much all its doing is lighting up the harddrive tower...

can i just take the hdd out and put it in a new computer? Quote from: Wesf90 on July 14, 2007, 08:17:19 AM

No, not quite; do not pull the hard drive that's in the new computer out  and put the old one in.  Leave the original HD in the new computer and install the old one as a second HD.  The original HD in the new computer would be "master"; the old HD would be configured as "slave".  This means the computer will still boot from original HD in the new computer, but the old HD will be accessible to retrieve files from it.

What are you trying to do?  Are you trying to make the new computer "become" the old computer by transplanting the harddrive?   If so, then the short answer is No.  The registry stores information specific to the hardware of the computer it's on, such as sound cards, motherboards, etc.  and expects that information to be correct when WINDOWS BOOTS.  There's a chance that Windows will be able to change all the changes to the hardware, update the registry, and everything will be fine, but don't bet on it.  Also, who's to say your non-start error isn't caused by that harddrive?  Then you'd be copying the same problem to the new computer.

If you simply want access to all the data on the drive, then yeah most likely you can just plop it in.  I say most likely because I don't have all the information I need yet.  A lot of out-of-the-box computers have two IDE channels, which allows for four devices -- typically a harddrive, and a CDROM/dvdrom/etc.  I have however seen some with only one IDE channel, which means your harddrive and cd leave no room for anything else, or computers with four IDE devices connected, say, two harddrives, a cdrom, and a dvd-burner, again leaving no room for anything else.  If that's the case, you'll just need to disconnect one of the devices, and configure the harddrive to the same master/slave settings as the device you took out.  If you have more than one harddrive in the new computer, be sure to not disconnect the Master drive on the Primary IDE.  (If you don't know what's the Primary, trace the cables back to the motherboard, and it'll say either PRIMARY or SECONDARY.)

Of course, if you're using SATA, none of this is relevant.

Another alternative if you just want the data off the drive is to buy an external enclosure.  You put the drive in the enclosure and plug it into the computer via usb.
awesome... thanks guys

Solve : R is for Repair?

Answer»

Hello

Could someone give me a quick explanation of what the Windows Installation Repair does?
(You know, you insert your Windows disk, and press "R" for Repair...)

I would SUSPECT it just re-copies all the Windows files, thus deleting your driver SETTINGS, desktop settings, etc, but keeping your files (but leaving most EVERYTHING out of place with a registry reset)A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

Thanks Contrex
(Now I know what it is before I recommends it) You need to do it with no internet connection, and if the disk you are using is an original XP disk, ie non slipstreamed, you should apply SP2 (which includes SP1) before connecting to the Internet, and get all the SECURITY updates as a matter of urgency.

Solve : told my windows is counterfeit- now what??

Answer»

hi

i inadvertantly installed MS's WGA (windows genuine advantage) and was notified that "this copy of windows did not PASS genuine validation".  now WHENEVER i log on i get these dialog boxes telling me to "FIX" this now or later.  by fix, i think they mean BUY another legit copy for $140 which i cannot afford.  i have had this computer for 3 years that i got from my brother and have had no problems.

can MS MAKE me buy another copy of windows or will i be able to continue to use what i have and just be annoyed by the "threats" thanks

joanI assume you are running Windows XP SP1.

If you have the original copy of the disk w/ all relevant accompanying documents. I believe you can arrange to send the disk away to your countries' MS HQ and they will supply you a new disk & SERIAL key. FOLLOW the link that the WGA notification supplies and it will have multiple ways in which you can rectify the problem.

BUT, WGA cannot disable your system etc. All it will do is make you unable to download things such as IE7 (get FX anyway), WMP11, some updates on their site, and whatever else they feel was necessary to stop 'ungenuine' users of Windows obtaining.

Personally, I errr... will not go in to further details on my copy of Windows. Go here:

http://www.firewallleaktester.com/removewga_forbidden.htm

That will remove the pesty popups but you won't be able do any updates.

Alan <><  As I recall (though, I never had this issue myself... but I do on a virtual PC)
You should be able to call Microsoft, tell them what happened, and they should be able to fix it for you.
(You provide your serial, etc) alan

you directed me to a site to help me rid those pesky pop-ups about "ungenuine" windows but unfortunately i am pretty computer illiterate and haven't a clue what to do there.  can you explain?
thanks

joan

joani have  got a software which  removes this error.....so what is it?  if it costs money, forget it.  i'm broke. if i wasn't broke, i would buy a "real" copy of windows. My VPC just detected that it wasn't a genuine copy of Windows (Even though it is)
They killed it. I cant use it without activating. (Hey, now I know what happens!)

My recommendation:
Follow the directions on the "Lets Activate Windows" screen.
Call the Microsoft Support Center near you, its toll-free
Give them an incredibly long number, and they will give you a new incredibly long number back

Why do this?
Get your Windows version cleaned, and marked as Genuine, and have a clean slate.

Solve : sorry im retarded sure you guys can help me - computer wont start?

Answer»

hey im really new to anything even remotely technical about the actual way my computer works behind what i can see so please be gentle with me, i think i have read some thing like my problem on here as i have tried my hardest searching for some thing to help me but didnt follow a word of it, so can some one please help me, ok my problem is i wished to upgrade my computer so bought a new mother board an processor upgrading from pentium 3 to pentium 4 processor running windows xp sp2, i try an start the computer but all i have ever managed to get is usualy to some where after bios where the computer tries to boot an just very quickly flashes up a blue screen with some writing on then restarts, i have tried making an ms-dos boot disk as a friend advised me but when i got to ms-dos didnt know what i was doing tried to read on here what to do but didnt make any sense to me does any one have any ideas of how to get my computer to actually get past bios thanks for any help you can give me by the way sorry the title is so pointless an unrelated to my problem i just dont have a clue what the problem is Sounds like your computer is BSODing, (Blue Screen Of Death). Which is Microsoft's way of saying it's stuffed, either due a hardware or software change. Seeing as you have changed the Processor I would suspect that, maybe it is not supported by the Motherboard or the BIOS requires an update.

It sounds like you have got past the BIOS and it has POSTed correctly, as it would not show you a BSOD.

If the PC worked correctly before the CPU update I'd suspect that.Assuming your hard drive already has your operating system on it,what happens if you boot with your install disk?thanks my friend did inform me today of the BSOD  i have tried booting with the install disk an even made the 6 floppy boot diskettes from windows an tried them but still go right back to the BSOD! im pretty sure the processor is supported by the mother board my friend suggested it could be due to a lack of RAM as i only have 128 mb would booting a pentium 4 to window xp require more than this? as i can get to ms dos would there be any way of well creating a back door to get into some where in order to boot it up? Quote from: coxy on July 14, 2007, 09:24:40 AM

my friend suggested it could be due to a lack of RAM as i only have 128 mb

Quote
Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

CD-ROM or DVD drive

Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

128 MB RAM is the minimum that Microsoft recommends. It's a tiny amount, and you really need much more, four to eight times as much. Otherwise your performance is GOING TO SUCK.

The RAM module may not be seated properly or it may not be compatible with the motherboard. Or your psu could be crapping out or it could be 101 different things.

thanks again for the help YEAH i know i should have a lot more RAM but instead of spending money on that was trying to get the actual thing to work first before i start worrying about proformance, i have made sure to the best of my knowledge it is compatible with the mother board an BELIEVE it to be seated correctly i was just enquiring as to wether the 128MB minimum recommended could mean that the computer wont well do what ever it wont do that im experiencing?
XP will work on 128 MB RAM. The blue screen of death will not be caused by the quantity of RAM, which is small but sufficient.

thanks atleast thats one more thing i can rule out it being, im thinking just giving up an going back to using the always working but always working slowly mother board an processor i originally got with my tiny computer about a decade ago now.You are running a P4 motherboard and CPU in a 10 year OLD case and PSU?

I hope you were exaggerating when you said a decade, because, man that's OLD hardware, and the PSU might be too feeble for one thing.

Is Tiny the brand name? The UK firm that went *censored* up?

it went *censored* up then was taken over by time which also went *censored* up, there is no case i got fed up of it so just stripped the parts out an got a 650w new PSU a when i first got the new mother board an processor as i thought that could be the reason it wasnt working Quote from: coxy on July 14, 2007, 10:24:08 AM

Are we saying we have NO CASE? do you have mother board laying there and cards are stuck in board
without anything to hold them in place. That maybe a problem by itself.this mother board is cardless as of the moment, you dont need cards for the mother board to actually run do you? i know with my old one you did as there was no screen socket in the mother board so a graphics card had to be used, an it has been sat on my desk for about 6 months with a graphics an audio card happily just sticking out of it you don't need a case. A pizza box will do or a sheet of sponge rubberyup thats what im doing soon to be tupper ware box, i have my MS-6323 ver:1 mother board with my graphics card an sound card sat here on my desk humming away NICELY, although micro star wont take credit for this board any more seems it doesnt exist in the mind of big industry ahh well

Solve : Microsoft.net Framework 1.1 problems?

Answer»

I don't know how extensively microsoft's recent problems with their updates have been discussed here, but I was unable to download the security update for Microsoft.NET Framework version 1.1, service pack 1 (KB928366).  I originally GOT some advice that recommended uninstalling 1.1 alltogether, and then re-installing 1.1, then service pack 1, and then I would be able to SUCCESSFULLY download the new security update.

Well, I uninstalled 1.1, reinstalled it, and now I not only can't download the new security update, I can't even download service pack 1.

I'm stuck, and I don't know what do to.  I'm not sure if I NEED to uninstall framework 2.0 and 3.0 in order to do this.  Any HELP at all would be appreciated.  Thank youI would just DLoad and install SP2. Then you should be able to DLoad and properly install all updates and the .net frameworks...

I have a dell laptop with a non functional Cd drive.  I have the dell restore cd which essentially justs deletes the current partition and reinstalls windows. Now the cd wont run off an external drive so i cant restore my system via that way. I was wondering if i could take the cd files and place them on a usb key so then i could run it off the usb key and not the cd?You could try it but i KNOW that lot's of OEM restore CD's require to be booted to function.
If this is the CASE your system would have to support BOOTING from USB...My system doesThen you should be good to go...backup any data you WANT saved first.Well i mean should just copy the data thats on the disc ONTO my usb key or like create an img?

It wont let me go into media player.

says i dont need any updates.Could you please TELL is what version of windows you're using? Also did anything happen that caused this error? Did you experience a crash or install anything etc.Windows 98 SE.
Well this computer has had problems since we got it. Maybe I just dont KNOW what I am doing but I have to keep restarting it in safe mode and adjusting the colors and resolution everytime i turn it on and the picture still dont look like it should. And SOMETIMES i have to restart a bunch of times just to get it going. It could be something simple but I havent really cared enough to do anything about it til now.
But yea, I experienced sort of a "crash" yesterday where everything just stopped working and i had to reinstall windows. Today i reinstalled Internet explorer 6.
I am left with 2 problems (on top of the display problems and the restarting):
1. the win media player thing
2. zoomBrowser EX wont connect/recognize my camera and I reinstalled that too

Solve : computer dosn't stop rebooting!?

Answer»

Well, dont give up just yet, hopefully someone will stop by soon with knowledge of what to do

Do you have a floppy drive?I had the same THING wrong with my Compact Pasrio 5000 and it turned out the ribbon cable in the CD ROM was bad I have to ask you if you have any Data on this PC you need to Keep, and if you do i would recommend you connect your Hard Drive to you other computer and copy all the important Files off, and Run an Anti VIRUS Scan on them just to be safe.

Then once you have all your files backed up, i would suggest you put the Drive back into its computer , and format and Reinstall windows, as this will work faster than TRYING to take apart your windows install bit by bit.

if you have any problems while installing windows i would expect you might have a faulty hard drive. As its a windows 2000 system i am guessing its QUITE old, and Hard DISKS don't last forever.

If you need any help with moveing you HDD to a new PC to back up the files ill tell you all you need to know, if somone else dosent beat me to the punch
