Solve : Want to reinstall XP but can't boot from CD or download Microsoft floppies?

Answer»

I need to reinstall Windows XP on my home PC as my brother rebooted it, but partitioned the hard drive incorrectly. (The hard drive is 80GB,  but I am only able to use 5GB. I don't really understand this in detail, but will explain the set-up as shown in 'Disk management'. The primary partition is C (system) and approx size 75GB. There is another extended partition for the logical drive, which is F and this is approx. 5GB. This is the boot partition.) The problem is that I cannot access the C drive and all my programs/documents etc are saved in F and obviously being only 5GB, there is not enough room. I have looked up lots of stuff on the internet, including this site on how to resolve this problem. Apparently, I should be able to reformat the partitions by going into disk management and right clicking, but this doesn't work. When I right click on either partition, the 'format' option is not available.

So I decided to reinstall Windows XP, as I thought my PC could do with a clean-up anyway, but this ain't working!! I bought my PC from MESH and have a recovery CD which I have used in the past without any problems. Normally, it just starts up automatically, but not anymore. I looked up info on changing the BIOS settings to boot from CD, but none of this works (pressing delete, escape etc). When the PC boots, there is an instruction to press any key to boot from CD, but this doesn't actually happen, no matter what I press. The advice BOOKLET I got from MESH, says to create a Startup floppy boot disk, if you can't boot from the CD, so I've done this. When I boot the PC using the disk, the startup screen does change and displays the following:
a\:
I am not a DOS expert, so have no idea what I should do at this stage - any ideas please?
Finally, having looked on this site, the only option seemed to be to boot from floppy, so i tried to download the floppy disks from the Microsoft site. It says you need 6 disks and will be instructed to enter them one at a time? I've not been able to do this - I maybe be doing something really basic wrong, but when I enter the first disk, it fills up and I get a dialogue box telling me that the disk is full and I need to retry or cancel. When I enter another disk, it starts from scratch again so I can't copy the download onto 6 disks.
Hope this all makes sense! I have tried to work through all the options and am completely stuck. I have a PC with 5GB usuable capacity, most of which is full with essential applications - I can't use Office, Itunes, download my PHOTOS or save anything! Would really appreciate any tips. Thanks.Did you try saving the file----->Here

Then creating the boot disk set with it?

See the below notation at the site.

If your download does not start after 30 seconds, click this link: Start download.

I'm sure I tried that as well and it wouldn't work, but will give it another go next week. Thanks.OK, we'll see you next week.  I have tried this again - both saving directly to disk and saving on the hard drive and copying to disk and it doesn't work. The instructions on the Microsoft site (see below) say that when you click on Download, you will be prompted to insert a floppy disk and this will continue as the program file is copied onto 6 disks. When I insert the first floppy, it fills up and I get a message to retry or cancel - I am not able to insert another disk and carry on copying. Am I doing something really stupid or is the downloadable file not working as it should?

Microsoft instructions:
Creating the Setup Disks
The download contains only one large program file. When you run the downloaded file, it extracts the files. You receive the following prompt: This program creates the Setup boot disks for Microsoft Windows XP. To create these disks, you need to provide 6 blank, FORMATTED, high-density disks.

Type the drive letter for the floppy disk drive. After you type the floppy disk drive letter, you see following prompt:
Insert one disk into drive :. This disk will become the Windows XP Setup Boot Disk. Press any key when you are ready. When you press a key, the downloaded file starts extracting and copying the files. Continue inserting blank disks as you are prompted until all six disks are created.
Use 6 new floppies and insert them into the A: drive and right clik it to format each one before attempting this...hopefully this should work. Are you using a wireless keyboard?  You may need to use a wired keyboard for Boot Up options.  My wireless KB won't do anything until Win XP boots.

You might try reformatting your drive on another computer if available. I've been using new disks and tried right-clicking and formatting them! I've spent hours trying everything more than once, cos i just don't get why it won't work! Relieved to hear it maybe the wireless keyboard. This did cross my mind when I first tried to reboot from the CD and I couldn't access the BIOS options, but I dismissed it as a 'silly' thought and so did my brother - I won't repeat what he said to me. I will see if I can get hold of a wired keyboard and try again. Thanks for all your suggestions.I finally managed to beg/borrow a wired keyboard and it worked! Plugged in the keyboard, PUT in my recovery CD and it rebooted automatically - a new clean installation of Windows XP in half an hour!
Thanks for your help. This is the first time I've used this forum and am very impressed, as I was totally stuck, so will definitely be back if I have any future problems. Im afraid I won't be of much help to anyone else!Glad to hear you are all fixed up

Solve : Problems with Crtl+Alt+Del Task manager in WinXP?

Answer»

So, it comes up with a task list, but that is it. No tabs at the TOP for processes, or even shut down, and I can't even close the WINDOW. I have to use  switch to to even minimize it. I've never heard of something like this, and I'd like to get it fixed. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I just noticed it tonight, after installing a game controller driver, although I'm not SURE that is the cause as this isn't exactly something I check all that often.

Win XP SP1, no antivirus/spy/adware.
This comes up every few weeks! You must have double clicked on the border of the Task manager and switched it to "Tiny Footprint Mode". When Task Manager is running in that mode, the tabs, menus etc are hidden. To toggle between tiny foot print mode and normal mode, double click on the border, for example the part shown in red in this image.

Thanks a lot. I feel pretty silly now. Quote from: Ninjachef on June 30, 2007, 03:52:00 PM

I feel pretty silly now.

No need whatever to feel silly. This feature of Task Manager is mentioned ABSOLUTELY nowhere in Windows or the Task Manager help as far as I can see. If you Google for "Task manager missing tabs" there are plenty of pages about it, and plenty of queries from mystified users.

Solve : Outlook express Terminates/Script Errors/Multiple messages?

Answer»
HI, I have submitted a query before so please bear with me.

For a while now I have have the following problems:

Outlook express terminates before collecting all messages "your server has unexpectedly terminated"

There are then multiple versions of the messages that are collected, which means 20-30 at least for some.

As you try to go through deleting them the error line "An error has occured in the script in this page" it asks you WHETHER you want to still continue RUNNING scripts.

It went away for a BIT. Now its back. I don't know if its viral or not. My CA associates security package doesn't pick up anything.

Help!!

MY OS is Windows XP, PENT 4, 200GB, 1024 Ram.

Solve : HELP! I accidentally un-installed the sound drivers (?)?

Answer»

So i'm an idiot and just accidentally uninstalled what i BELIEVE are the sound drivers (it was called sound max or something to that effect?) off of my computer RUNNING windows xp. now, whenever i do anything that has sound, my computer just makes a weird beep noise. under the sound settings in the control panel, it now says there is no audio device or anything else (which there definitely is as i'm on laptop)

please tell me that i didn't just royally SCREW myself and that there is something that i can do!

thanksOption 1:
right click on My Computer and go to Manage
select the Device Manager on the left side of the Manage window
find the sound device on the right side of the Manage window and double-click on it
go to the driver tab of the sound properties window and click roll back driver

If that doesn't work try this
Option 2:
Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore
Restore to the time when you think you uninstalled the drivers.

Solve : Coputer freezes when defragging?

Answer»

I'm try to run DEFRAG on a FRIENDS computer.  She hasn't defragged in 5 YEARS!  Anyway it will freeze every so often while I am defragging.  FIRST at 8%, i restarted, then 10%, I restarted.  I get to 11% and it freezes, I restart, degrag again and it still freezes at 11%.

Toshiba Satellite, 64mb Ram, Windows 98se.  I'm thinking running defrag in safe mode would help, any other suggestions?

Thanksummm try going to disk cleanup first and removing everything in there.. and do both things in safe mode that might help.

also maybe a scan disk scan might help make sure it fixes the errors it finds automatically

maybe some ram would helpEvery time the disk contents change, defrag will start over. With that much time and no defrag, it could be a long process. Thanks guys!  Yea more Ram would def. help, just NEED to get my friend to spend the cash.  Running everything in safe mode cleared up everything.  Computer is ready to go!your welcome. come visit me in the virus section if you have any infection problems or random slowness of ur compRun defrag in safe mode. Solve : Is the computer faster with less "crap" stored on the HD??

Answer»

Just curious because i sometimes hear "my computer would be much fatser without all the music and videos and movies and pictures...." and so on, is that true or not?To a certain degree.  The main thing to worry about is available hard disk space as opposed to hard drive space.  Also, the more you have loaded, the more things run in MEMORY and use available memory.  Adding more RAM to a slow computer or simply uninstalling unused software can help too.  There's always the ol MSCINFIG too. having lots of stuff on the hard drive will slow things down if you do not defragment it regularly, and also if it is nearly full speed will suffer.

If you have moved files such as large movies or music files around, your drive is most likely fragmented. Windows stores bits and pieces of one FILE scattered out on the hard drive and when you request that file, it needs to go through the hard drive and find each piece. When you defragment your drive, it will take all the pieces of the file on the hard drive and line them up with each other. This will speed up your computer a lot because then all the pieces of the file are located right next to each other on the drive.Yeah, KEEP in mind what MULLINS said too, adding more RAM will do wonders (depending on how much you already have) also defragging your hard drive does speed it up a bit too.

I guess I didn't add anything new to this thread but that's my 2 cents worth...  1. scandisk
2. defrag puter  when it needs it*
3 install and run Ccleaner
4.  whenever you get  "past"  50%   "used space" on your hard drive,  the speed is greatly reduced.*
Allright thanx guys! now i know what to say to PEOPLE that ask me that question, and what to do if my hard drive gets filled with stuff.

Hi.  Im about to reformat my computer w/ a brand new Windows XP.  BUUUUT before I do, I want to know if there is an easy way to reload & reinstall all of my

-applications?
-documents?
-data?

To be clear: I know how to save info on my external drives, or removable media.  That is not what I want to do.  I want to know if there is a piece of software which looks at my existing C: and makes some kinda super file, which I can load and Double-click, after installing my new XP- and *presto ! its as if I never CHANGED systems!!

any input would be much appreciated  : )If I understand you correctly...you want a program that will image your CURRENT hard drive so you can restore it at a later time.

Noeton's Ghost 10 may be something you'd want to take a look at.

Simply visit www.symantec.comthanks saviour.  I figured NOrton ghost could make an image file for just this purpose, but I wonder if you, or anyone else, know anything a little.. free-er?  Here ya go:

http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml

or try this...

http://selfimage.excelcia.org/

Hope this helps...and good luck.If i understand correctly you are GOING to do a clean install of XP right ? ?

Just so you know an imaging program is going to take an image of your complete HDD as is when you create the image.
It will not re-install all your stuff into a new XP install...it will overwrite it and restore your machine to exactly where it was when you IMAGED it.

There is no program that can take all your installed programs and current data and merge them into a clean install.

But i keep HOPING.

Solve : Xp Sp2 will not boot?

Answer»

Hi, I really hope someone can help.
I have a Dell 2350 running Xp SP2 with 512RAM chip, DVD, CD/RW, Floppy and 2 HDD.
My original problem began with the computer shutting off after startup.  There was not any new programs or hardware installed prior to the problem that I am aware of.  I have only been able to get the desktop to show 2 times since the issue began before it shuts off. The first time the sys ran long enough for me to get to the DEVICE manager, which showed no hardware problems then it shut off, and after about a hundred more tries, I was able to get in and begin running Del system diagnostics from BIOS and it ran almost 13 hrs while executing the extended version when all of a sudden it shut off, and has not displayed anything on screen again.  Therefore I cannot get back into BIOS to check boot sequence or change it because it will not stay on more han a few minutes now or show anything on the monitor.  I have tried hitting function keys after restarting with no disks in the drives to try and get to SETUP screen, no luck...., I tried replacing the motherboard with no fix (under Dell support recommendation, when it didnt fix the issue they gave me a refund), then put orig board back in and I replaced the power SUPPLY with no difference either.  Recently I replaced the CMOS battery, that did not help.  I have ruled out hardware config by unplugging everything then restarting between adding components again.  No matter what components are plugged up, sometimes it runs a few minutes sometimes only a few seconds all without video or noiss of the drives working.  I have tried booting from the install CD, and made bootable floppy's (6) for SP2 online along with a MSDOS startup disk.  All boots reslt in nothing. I see lights flashing on the drives, mouse and keyboard, but it will do nothing else.  Grrrrrrr    Video is integrated without a slot to try another graphics card.
Also tried another monitor...still nothing.  I am suspecting a virus, and planned on using the system disk to format and reinstall, but I cannot get it to recognise anything I put in.  HELP!Seems like you've checked about everything except for the memory...

Hvae you checked it as well?Your CPU could have overheated to the point of no
return.Hopefully not.

I think you NEED to clean and reseat your CPU and heatsink.

If you do ,don't forget the new thermal paste.I've saw this before with bad RAM.  Could be or could not be.  I've seen it before with PROCESSOR issues too.

Solve : Utilizing multiple internet connections??

Answer»

Hello everyone.  I'm running my own smalltime webserver at home using Windows XP Pro.  I have 2 internet service providers currently, each one alone is too slow to run my server.  If I COULD combine the two, it may be enough.  I installed another network adapter and HOOKED it up to my other modem.  For some reason though, it's only using my first connection tosend data, and my second connection isn't being used at all.  Anyone have any idea how I can make it use both of them?A router that supports load balancing is probably what you need.

Type bold WORDS into Google for more info.
Darn, I was hoping there was software-based I could use.  I really need to stick with my CURRENT hardware, so I guess I give up.  Thanks a bunch ANYWAYS, though.Check this out

That helped!  Thanks so much, that should take care of overloads!  I'm curious.  Do you have two DSL accounts or what?  That would need 2 separate phone lines. I wonder if he has 1 cable and 1 dsl? Whatever, I am envious!

OK, the dump file is dated 13July07, 01:09PM.
The program added before this, was on 04July07 and it is 'FreePOPs'. I use it to fetch my free Hotmail inbox to Outlook Express.
The last program added is 'Hard Drive Inspector' on 22July07, that is after the blue screen error.

jawanda56Hello guys
This thread is losing interest. No response even after over 48 hours since my last post.

Any answers? Any suggestions? Please

jawanda56Here are some reasons:

    *  0xC000009A, or STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES, is caused by lack of nonpaged pool resources.
    * 0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, is typically due to bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
    * 0xC000009D, or STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED, indicates defective or loose cabling, termination, or the controller not seeing the hard disk.
    * 0xC000016A, or STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED, is also caused by bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
    * 0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR, is caused by improper termination or defective cabling on SCSI devices, or two devices attempting to use the same IRQ.

Take your pick as it could be any of them.

Resolving the Problem

Resolving a bad block problem: An I/O STATUS code of 0xC000009C or 0xC000016A normally indicates that the data could not be read from the disk due to a bad block (sector). If you can restart the system after the error, Autochk runs automatically and attempts to map the bad sector to prevent it’s further use.

If Autochk does not scan the hard disk for errors, you can manually launch the disk scanner. Run Chkdsk /f /r on the system partition. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins. If you cannot start the system due to the error, use the RECOVERY Console and run Chkdsk /r.

Warning  If your system partition is formatted with the FAT file system, the long filenames used by Windows can be damaged if Scandisk or another MS-DOS-based hard disk tool is used to verify the integrity of your hard disk from MS-DOS. Always use the version of Chkdsk that matches your Windows version.

Resolving a defective hardware problem: If the I/O status is C0000185 and the paging file is on an SCSI disk, the disk cabling and SCSI termination should be checked for problems.

Resolving a failing RAM problem: Run the hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer, ESPECIALLY the memory scanner. For details on these procedures, see the owner’s manual for your computer.

Check that all the adapter cards in the computer are properly seated. Use an ink eraser or an electrical contact treatment, available at electronics supply stores, to ensure adapter card contacts are clean.

Check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device that is causing the error. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve this error.

Make sure that the latest Windows Service Pack is installed.

If the preceding steps fail to resolve the error, take the system MOTHERBOARD to a repair facility for diagnostic testing. A crack, a scratched trace, or a defective component on the motherboard can cause this error.

Resolving a virus infection: You should check your computer for viruses using any up-to-date, commercial virus scanning software that examines the Master Boot Record of the hard disk. All Windows file systems can be infected by viruses.

As Potio is suspecting, it is a software interrupt error message.

Chkdsk shows no bad sector in the hard drives.

I needed to reformat my computer. when I went to reinstall windows i mistakenly put in a windows xp home cd instead of the windows xp pro cd. the disk has gotten to the part where it asks for your product code which i dont have, and i do not want this installed anyway. how do i get rid of this ? when my computer restarts it is automatically going back to the set up and asking me for the product code. I NEED to remove this so I can install the correct one which is windows xp pro but cannot go anywhere but to restart the set up. can anyone help ?So just we understand your question clearly,
You want to basically reformat your drive so you can install the other Windows OS, right?

I think you just boot from the Windows Home CD and follow the instructions.
Hold on a bit and you will get a definite answer.yes, that right, but when i boot from the home cd it wants a product code to continue. and when in put the pro cd in i get an error because i already started installing the home version. i dont know how to get rid of the partially installed home version or get around it to install the pro version.I'm not sure how to format the drive in your SITUATION but I think it has something to do with FDisk.DOWNLOAD this product called SwissKnife it will enable you to format , partition and much more and its free

http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htmSee How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk.  I believe you can download it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263044.  Scroll down the page and click on the link for Download 263044usa8.exe - English now.Tried swissknife, still goes right to restarting the windows xp home setup.? soybean has your answer.  Just fdisk it do a QUICK format and get it done and over with.  maybe i am not explaining this clearly. let me try again.

the problem is not with the computer i am on now it is with my laptop.
the computer is either off, or it is restarting the windows xp home set up. there is nothing in between.
when i turn it on it immediately restarts the set up. i cant get to, or dont know how to get to ANYTHING else. there is no place to type anything in or get to anything to let me format or anything like that. the only thing i can do is hit "next" on the set up screen and then it wants the product code............then reformat the drive and reinstall the OS...........

Or you can try to access your computer in Safe Mode.Does this laptop have a floppy drive in it ? ?
If so you could dload a WinME bootdisk from bootdisk.com and use it to format the drive...you will lose all your data. When it's done simply remove the floppy  put in the correct XP CD and re-boot.

Hi everyone:  I just updated my system by installing Windows XP.  Now I cannot get my cable INTERNET connection to connect.  I turned off the cable and let it SIT and then turned it back on, but still no connection.  Do I just need to call the cable company?  Also, my screen is off to the left with a black strip on the right and top and bottom.  Not all my icons show.  How can I get a full screen or centered?  Thanks.internet connection:
Check out your device manager by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Manage. In the window that pops up, go to the Device Manager. Look through the list of devices and SEE if there are any devices with a problem. (small yellow icon will be easy to spot) My guess is you need to install a couple device drivers to get everything back to normal.

monitor:
It is probably a problem with the monitor itself. Explore the on-screen menu by USING the buttons on the monitor. There should be an option to reset or auto-adjust. That should be all it NEEDS.

Solve : Usr Accounts?

Help please............

My operating system is XP home

Solve : Copy hard disk to another hard disk?

Answer»

I have two identical computers using Windows XP Professional.

Usually, if I get a PROBLEM I can't fix, I do a clean install by pressing Alt+F10 and going through the process of reinstalling Windows XP.
The hard disk is partitioned into C: and D: (I'm assuming the Windows XP image is HIDDEN in the D:??).
Well, anyway, when I do a clean install on one of the computers it's still really slow and buggy. Maybe it's a hardware problem, or maybe the problem is with the original Windows XP image on D:?

So, my question is:
Can I make an EXACT copy of one computer and put it ontothe other one? Hopefully this would overwrite any errors?

Is that possible?

Thanks I don't think thats possible. EDIT: For some reason, prog's like Norton Ghost etc completly slipped my mind. So much for my comment heh... it is indeed possible.

When the hard drive is partitioned, like yours, into C: and D: there is no "image" on drive D... It's just free space on D (If formatted and not a raw partition... and assuming that C: is the partition you have your OS on)

When you do a clean install, are you formatting the C: partition?
sometimes it's just best to format to get a "fresh start"Thanks for the reply.
When I do a clean install, D: remains unchanged, therefore I just assumed the OS image was located there. C: is REVERTED back to it's original state.
I think the computer was set up so that a special program would perform the formatting, etc for me. Not sure about the exact details though.

EDIT: When I mention the OS image I'm talking about the image that was put on my computer instead of having Windows XP on CD. I guess it's like a recovery CD?I believe this software should do what your looking for....

Solve : Transfering Outlook Contacts to a seperate computer?

Answer»

Can anyone TELL me how I would go about copying a set of microsoft outlook contacts from my WORK mates computer and transfering them on to my own. you have to do an export.

File
import/export
export as a .wab file
transfer the file (EMAIL, disk, thumbdrive)

Do the same on your computer do a file import and then address book. This is a better explanation

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/175017In my Outlook 2003, export as a .wab file is not an option.  And, I don't think Philp is talking about an address book; he's talking about Outlook Contacts.

To export Contacts, go to File, Import and Export, Export to a file, select the type of file, select Contracts, and complete the export.  If you have Outlook on your computer, I suggest you select .pst as the format for the export.  Then, import that into your Outlook.Soybean...you're too quick on the draw for me

Solve : Cpu-Z says 994 mhz, factory 2200, :???help?

Answer»

Like it says at the topic, CPU-Z says that my cpu frequency is 994 MHZ, but it should be 2200 mhz.
Now i bought a game, driver parallel lines and it also said that the frequency was 994 mhz when it took a look if my computer can run the game, and it should be able but something is wrong, but to the point...
Here is a pic on cpu-Z,what it says:

This is CALLED AMD PowerNow! technology.
Your CPU will reduce its speed when full power is not necessary to save power and produce less heat.
It will step BACK up to full speed when needed.
This is normal, do not worry.
If you want to turn this feature off, you can go to Control Panel - Power options, and set the power scheme to Always On.
Hope this helps.Wow, thanx man!! Yeah now it says 2200 mhz! i was already STARTING to think that the cpu was damaged or something...THANX! You're more than welcome.
Stop by any time.

There might be a link between the freeze-ups and MS VPC.  Sounds like a good excuse of a clean out (scans, reg cleaner etc..)

Good luckI scan with CCleaner  after every session and check the registry too.
I do a full- system  AVG & Spybot scan nightly.

For some reason it just kept locking up ? I am thinking one of my ram modules could be a culprit as well ?  The problem is still there but not as BAD....
I get errors in the log which suggest a tcp/ overload  ........like someone is trying to infiltrate my puter...... Grab a cup of Coffee for This One...

Good Luck with this.i will read the novel little later tonight,  I noticed    javaw.exe   in my running processes  twice  and saw a lot of wasted CPU on it. read up and saw it was something not critical ...wondering if it had anything to do with some app i installed awhile back on  firefox & iexplorer being able to "relate: to each other  not sure, but it has not locked up ....yet...   knock on wood.....   Sorry about the long winded response from the MS...

Problem is in setting up a VPN there can be so MANY small variables that take you to a dead end i thought i'd give you the meat and potatoes version first...
As it gets closer hopefully i can be of some assistance.I went through that.........  "HEADACHE"  but interesting ...
you know , i did go ahead and delete the vpn stuff and it was still over dumping or something like that then I noticed the javaw.exe thing...  still checking my error logs to understand what exactly is causing the freeze ups...  none since this morning  ps... spy terminator didnt find anything
adaware found some cookies
spybot found something interester, a trojan the file was called 14-11-17.exe but the trojan NAME i will have to find again. if you need it
AAvgspyware found some minor stuff and also downloader.obfuscated.as and that was a high alert the file name was IFFND.exe

so heres the log

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]Mike,
I see that you have HijackThis running from your desktop.  You have it in a permanent location, which is good because it makes important backups that you may end up needing.  However, to help you avoid clutter and to help ensure that the backups stay safe, I would like you to move it to a special location.
  • Double-click on My Computer to open it and navigate to C:\Program Files.
  • Right-click on the empty (white) space and go to New > Folder.
  • Name the folder something like HJT and move HijackThis into that new folder.
  • If you would still like to run HijackThis from the desktop for convenience, right-click on HijackThis and click on Create Shortcut.  This will create a shortcut to the program; move the shortcut to the desktop.

Please do a system-wide search on your computer for wmplayer.exe.  You may need to enable hidden files and folders.  Also, before you start the search, click on Advanced Search Options and then More advanced options, and make sure Search hidden files and folders is checked.  Let us know the results of your search.

I noticed that you have a lot of ActiveX controls for Internet Explorer.  I'm not sure how much these could slow down your computer, but I'm sure they're not helping.  We may want to look into this further.

Open up HijackThis and close all other windows/browsers.  CHECK the following entries...

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

O18 - PROTOCOL: AutorunsDisabled - (no CLSID) - (no file)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 64.34.113.100:80

(If you or the administrator didn't set this proxy, then it should be checked.)

O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

(If you or your system administrator did not set these restrictions on Internet Explorer and Control Panel, then check these entries.)

Go ahead and click on Fix Checked, then post back with the requested information and a brand new HijackThis log.

Also...you should definitely ditch ditch Spyware Terminator.  It's really not worth having.  You're much better off with AntiVir...or better yet, AVG.Hi

well i will do that but before i ditch spyware terminator i want to say avg spyware isnt free so then that would mean i wouldnt have any spyware programs in 30 days. tell me what i think

thanks for the help! Quote from: CBMatt on June 25, 2007, 02:01:27 PM

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 64.34.113.100:80[/b]
(If you or the administrator didn't set this proxy, then it should be checked.)

I used them at one time to do streaming media and i may want to use PROXIES latter on is. Will this disable the ABILITY to do it again later? probably not right?Actually, AVG is free.  When the trial runs out, the program is still fully functional.  It merely disables two features: active scanning and automatic updates.  It's a good idea to have the active scanner, but if you use a firewall (which you do) and perform regular scans, it shouldn't be an issue.

As for that proxy...you don't have to remove.  These can sometimes be set without a user's knowledge, but because you set it yourself, it's not a concern.  If you did remove it, it wouldn't prevent you from setting another.ok thanks sound good i did really like avg spyware. Although i didnt like the virus one which i had before avira.
i will do the hijackthis now and report back.

Solve : BIOS will not update?

Answer»

My computer is getting stuck on the Compaq splash screen. Sometimes it starts properly, sometimes I have to shut it down and START again. It may take me two times to get it working, it may take six. Thus, I reformatted my computer to SEE if this would help. Well it hasn't. Apart from this my computer is as good as new.

After consulting a HELPDESK, I discovered that I should try updating my BIOS. However, my computer won't let me. The BIOS version on my Compaq Presario V2000 is currently F.20. The latest version is F.23. When I tried installing the latest version I got a window that said "This BIOS is not for your Notebook PC." I tried installing less recent versions (F.21 and F.22), but I got the same message. I also tried installing the BIOS for a Presario V2000C, still the same message.

I tried calling Compaq, but they wouldn't help me because my warranty is expired.

Please help?

You might have the right notebook model number but it may be a different revision of the notebook with a different motherboard.

First try to do a memory test this can cause this same issue.  Download memtest86 and put it on a floppy disk and boot from it and let it run for at least an hour to CHECK for any memory errors.

When the computer is up and running does it blue screen at all or reboot? It sounds like the machine is TRYING to save you from turning it into a doorstop.

9 times out of 10 a BIOS flash is not the solution to a machine that has suddenly gotten laggy or is having troubles...

What other diagnostics have you performed ? ?

Solve : Ahhhh! Please help. Serious XP SP2 problem!?

Answer»

Please somebody help!

I am running SP1 for XP Pro, and have been 4 some time. AFTER installation of SP2 (which installs without error) the following things happen immediatly after installation and restart:

-The taskbar disappears.

-All network connections disappear and no new ones can be created (however connections still appear in internet explorer)

-My COMPUTER responds as if it has no soundcard (displaying error messages that all lead to that conclusion, however device manager shows that the card is present and working correctly)

-Boot time is increased drastically

-Various other small bugs appear

Installation from the internet and from CD produce the same results. I dont want to FORMAT the drive, my PC is completely error free (completely!! -as in not even the occasional freeze, a rarity for microsoft indeed) and has been for over a year.

Also, THE PROBLEM IS NOT BIOS RELATED.

I would really really appriciate some help here. Its driving me insane. Great thanks to anybody who can solve this!

(I ran into this problem a while ago and only saw it as annoying, but now I *NEED* SP2 so I can run a few new programs that require it).Do you think maybe the service pack got corrupted somehow? Have you tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it? DRAKEN ..... Several questions which require answers......
Is your XP Pro /SP1 a authentic MicroSoft issue and duly licensed to you for that machine or is it a copy?
Quote

Installation from the internet and from CD produce the same results.
When you say installation from the internet, do you mean from MicroSofts update site or from somewhere else?
The CD you are using to install SP2 ........Did you order it directly from MicroSoft ?
Assuming your XP pro SP1 is authentic and your SP2 was mailed to you from MicroSoft, why haven't you phoned them ?

We await your reply.

dl65

Yes I installed SP2 directly from microsoft, however the CD was a friends. I dont know where he got it, but it was USED AFTER the downloaded attempt. Microsoft suggest I format my PC, but i really dont want to do that. I have the most stable operating system I have ever experienced...except for SP2 problems. Any more suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Draken..... For some reason, you are avoiding answering my questions.....
So I will end my session with this .............. Follow MicroSoft's advice and format the machine and if you are able to install sp2, it will be even more stable.

dl65  I have infact answered your questions. I get the feeling that u think I have an illegal copy of windows, however this is not the case. I have followed microsoft's advice and have formatted my PC. SP2 appears to work perfectly now, however, as i feared, my system is more unstable: I have had a few freezes and non-responsive programs in the last week... Well that's life I guess. At any rate, THANKYOU for your concern.Draken,

We ask because many times we will spend 2 or 3 days assisting only to find that the real issue is a non-legit installation that cannot be properly updated etc. etc.
It is by no means meant to offend, we just as a Help Forum happen to see it frequently.
Nothing personal at all.

On to your machine.
You stated you did a fresh re-install of XP along with SP2 but are still experiencing some issues ? ?
Freezes and non responding programs can have many causes.

Post as much info about the hardware involved and also what programs you are running for protection and we'll do our best to get this sorted for you.I wonder if the factor that is common wouldn't be a driver of some kind.  Are you grabbing all of the newest drivers for your hardware?

Solve : diagonal red cross in white square?

Hi people(again),

In an effort to solve this problem I have been into Tools on the Explorer toolbar, opened Advanced and made sure that "show pictures" in the Multimedia section is ticked (no change). This problem although minor is somewhat irritating and your help would be appreciated.

The person who sent it to me was able to open it as indeed  were the people who received the email before her.

We need to know whether the other people she sent the message TO were able to see the image, not the person she received it FROM.Hi people,
It would appear that other people that she sent the picture to were also unable to open it. AND, after right clicking on the email itself and looking at the properties it shows the WHOLE email (INCLUDING red cross etc) as 15kb only. That says to me that there ain't no picture behind that red cross. Do you think that there is a problem with the "sending" computer rather than my "receiving" computer?

Over to you.

Graham.  Yes, it's their fault.
Get them to re-send it after checking through to make sure everything is there.Hi Calum,
Thanks for the advice. Job done I reckon  .

Cheers,

Graham. Also maybe suggest in future that they copy and paste images into the body of the message to ensure proper arrival.... Quote from: Graham on June 25, 2007, 01:50:52 PM

You're welcome.
patio's advice above is good too, make sure you tell the sender what's up or they'll keep doing it.If the sender isn't sure what setting to change, let us know what they're using for email.  Outlook Express, Outlook, etc.?

Solve : Problems with SP2?

Answer»

I recently got a new system (HP Pavilion a1630n)-it came with Media Center XP.  I like to run a clean ship, so I immediately reformatted it to XP Pro.  Unfortunately, while tracking down the drivers for the system, I found that my built-in audio requires SP2.  So I upgraded, and after restarting, I got BSOD right after the Windows logo.  No clue why.

Nothing was working (safe mode, etc) so I reformatted again.  This time I tried plugging in my own SOUNDCARD and only installing SP1.  I'm getting FAR less lockups on SP1, but there are still major problems (my USB ports are no longer recognized, for example).  When I asked a friend, he said this could be driver issues.

Currently I am using the drivers from here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=fi&dlc=en&product=3245027&lang=en
They're for my exact system, so I'm not sure why I'd have "driver issues."  As for hardware, I've added two of my storage hard drives, one IDE and one SATA.  However, upon removing them for testing, the problems persisted, so I'm not sure that's it either.

Mainly, I'm looking for the correct drivers or anything that will just get my system in good and working condition again.Oh, forgot to mention: I've tried numerous hardware configurations concerning the HDs, such as connecting/disconnecting the extra hard drives then reformatting again, trying with/without the extra hard drives while installing service packs, etc.

Also, the one time I got the computer to boot using SP2 without giving me the BSOD, everything worked fine--my USB slots were recognized, as was my cardreader, and sound worked well also.Have you tried XP then SP2 then the MBoard drivers then everything else ? ?Yup, I'm pretty sure I tried that.  Sorry I forgot to mention this, but right after my very first reformat + SP2, the computer ran fine for about a week before all this started.what happened before it started acting up?? any new software or hardware?? did it start after a certain update??ASIDE from what I mentioned in my last post (that it worked for two weeks after the initial SP2 install), here's how every other reformat WENT:

I typically just installed SP2, then my mobo/graphics/sound/keyboard drivers.  This usually led to a BSOD right after the next time I restarted it.

During all of the above, the extra IDE and SATA drives were plugged in, but I've tried repeating the process without them--no luck.Did you contact HP? Surely it is still un der warranty. There may be hardware issues.

Did you make a Media Center restore disc SET before wiping the drive? If so, reinstall that and see if the problems persist.

Solve : My screen is black...?

Answer»

Right now I am at the school library.

Yesterday I was at my house, and I wanted to change the resolution on my computer. I wanted to make it so I could see more on my screen. I did this and clicked "OK" and then my screen went BLACK and stayed that way.

The screen was still on, and I heard sound effects, so the only problem was that it wasn't showing what was on the desktop.

I tried pressing enter to see if I could cancel the resolution change, but it did not work. So I restarted it, and no luck. I really have no CLUE what to do, and at the MOMENT my family nor I can AFFORD to get someone in.

I have an HP, I don't have the stats with me though, sorry. We're using Windows XP.How OLD is the computer?

Can you test the monitor out on another computer to make sure that it's not the monitor thats died...Whats the full spec on your system.... im running a HP system myself ....Reboot the computer and go into safe mode.  When the computer is booting hit F8 see if you can see anything in safe mode sounds like when you were changing monitor resolutions you went out of range ofyour monitor.

Solve : Internet link?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser. My question is: My computer will not respond to links I receive in Outlook Express emails.  I click on the link but nothing happens. How do I fix?more then likely it is a security SETTING i am sure someone will pipe in with which setting it is.Try following these steps (found when I googled your problem):

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. Select the Tools->Internet Options MENU
3. Select the [Programs] tab
4. Look for a checkbox LABELLED "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it  is the default browser"
5. If this checkbox is not ticked, then this is the cause of the problem, so tick it!
6. Click OK
7. Close Internet Explorer
8. Re-open Internet Explorer
9. Close Outlook Express
10. Re-open Outlook Express

Solve : System tray?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and the Firefox browser. My question is (this may sound dumb)but how do you REMOVE programs from the system tray? I have a dell notebook and I want to free up some system resources. please help!   UNINSTALL them.  Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall them.  Now, I HOPE you're not going to uninstall important programs such as firewall and anti-virus.

I also suggest you use Task Manager to see how many processes you have running at various times and whether any of them are obviously hogging CPU resources.

Have you experienced some degradation in performance?  Are you currently using some spyware removal tools to keep your system clean?  Ever used CCleaner?  Do you ever defragment your hard drive?  No I'm not planning on removing anything of any importance. But I have Icons from programs that I have already deleted that I would like to remove. yes I defrag regularly and I use a reg.fix PROGRAM any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Well, if you've deleted a program that placed an icon in the system tray when it was installed, that should remove the icon.  Understand?

HOW did you delete those programs?  What "reg.fix program" do you use?Yes I do know that. I used the add remove programs but the Icons have remained the registry fix that I use is called reg fix from regfix.comOK, so you understand that you have an abnormal situation there, right?

You say http://www.regfix.com/.  Take a look.  Does that look like a software site?

I suggest you reinstall these programs you've "UNINSTALLED" and uninstall again.  Let's see whether this works right and, if not, see whether we can figure out why.Sorry that link is http://www.registryfix.com

Solve : slow pc!!!?

Answer»

i have new pc with due core 3ghz 80 gbhdd 512 ram win xp . by this, my computer runs SLOW , what is the  best OS for duble processor, it good to install winNT. pls help!   XP is fine for dual core.
How slow is slow in this case?
Can you give us some specific examples?
When is it slow?
Was it always slow?
What protection do you have?
Put additional RAMs so your pages will load faster.  No if's and but's.  Try to reseat your memory cards and check specs (e.i. speed and TYPE of the memory card).  If you have 512 then double it with the same specifications.  If confused, try to bring the memory cards ALONG with you when buying add'l RAMs.  You'll notice the difference after installing the cards.  God BLESS!Format it bra and check UPGRADE ur ram. Defragment the HD alsoHow much free space do you have, and how many programs (foreground and background) are you running?

Solve : Random startup problem?

Answer»

Every time I restart my computer or turn it on, I'm getting this error:

http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/4746/safdafdafui2.jpg

I have absolutely no clue how to go about in fixing it.

Any suggestions?when did this start happening?? what os do you have...

any new software or hardware installed before this started happening?? do you know what program that is?? natural color??A few days ago. I have Windows XP

There was no software installed or anything. I just turned on my computer one day and bam it was like that. Natural color is a program that has to do with my monitor which is a SamSung SyncMaster 997mb.

I just noticed too that a LOT of icons in my taskbar are missing like the speaker symbol for my sound, etc.what protections do you have??

have you tried uninstalling your monitor drivers and reinstalling them??I would TRY un-installing the Natural Color software using Add/Remove then re-boot and re-install it.

Check the site also to see if any hotfixes/patches have been RELEASED or if there is a newer version.Ok, well I re-installed, and the first time I restarted it was fine. Then I turned my computer off last night, and I just turned it on, and I GOT the same issue. Oh and it turned my Windows theme from Windows classic to Windows XP blue.

Should I just uninstall it? Do I really need it? I dont know what a 'monitor color calibration software thing' is, and thats what other people are telling me. :/

I can't find the site for hotfixes/patches - im not that computer savvy

Oh and I just uninstalled Norton (wasn't GOING to renew it) and installed AVG free editionbut have you contacted the software maker about this problem ?? like in their forums if they have them or threw email or phone call..

what kind of computer do you have??I just uninstalled it again - this time for the time being. Do you honestly think I need it:

http://www.samsung.com/za/products/monitors/techinfo/tech_n.asp

?

The only time I use my printer is to print out papers for class. That's it. I don't use it to print out pictures.Dump it.
DLoad and run CCleaner (free) afterwards to remove all traces.
Should you decide to do photos down the road stop back for some advice on excellent free alternatives.

Solve : Changed UPS power settings and now can't get computer to stay on?

Answer»

Feel really supid here.  I changed the powersetting on my display.  this is what i did:

opened display, clicked on screen saver then power
Clicked on UPS
chose APC then back-ups
then hit configure
and then when i saved it the computer started shuttiing down and I couldn't get it to stop.  Now the coputer will start then start shutting down.  I don't know what to do.  My start up disk doesn't work.  I get an error message when I try and use it.

My computer is a Compaq presario with 60GB hardrive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive.  The system is XP home.

Thanks for any help you can GIVE me.  You know the old story, money is tight and I don't want to have to spend it in a shop if I don't have to.  Thanks again for reading this.
Do you actually have an APC UPS?What settings did you put in the Configuration screen?  Can you start in Safe mode?  To do that, As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.  2K_dummy:  Yes I have the battery backup device.

Soybean,

I'm not sure of all the settings. I think that they were:

enable all notifications

CRITICAL alarm
minutes on the battery before critical alarm 2  (this was already set)

NEXT instuct the computer to: shut down

I'll try your suggestion and will report back once I've tried it.  thanks for your help.

CharliI tried the F8 and f10, neither work.  F1 does but it doesn't help me at all with this problem.  Thanks,  any other suggestions?DISABLE the screen saver...Can't get in to do so.  If I could get in I could change the display settings.
as soon as the windows start up and I try and click on display it gives me an error message saying the system is shutting down.

Thanks anyway.  Any other ideas???
When you pressed F8 during startup, did you get an option to start in Safe Mode?  If not, try that again.I can't get into safe mode when I press F10 or F8.  Only F1 works.  I've tried several times several different ways (ie pressing when I turn it on, pressing and holding, etc).  Sorry but that just didn't work.  It's very strange.  Thanks again.Someone on another site suggested I UNPLUG the UPS unit.  I disconnected the UPS and for some reason that allowed me to go into safe mode where I was able to change the display back to it's original settings. Thank you so much for all your help. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions.

Solve : Replaced Hard Drive - XP Takes Forever To Load?

Answer»

I just replaced the hard drive on my laptop and then installed XP.  Now it takes a good 30 minutes just to get my computer booted up.  I'm confused - and maybe there was more wrong with my laptop than the old hard drive I replaced.  Has anyone had this happen? So you replaced your laptop hard drive and it's loading slowly.
Maybe check all your connections or try reformatting and reinstalling.what hhd was in the laptop before and what kind did you replace it with??

why did you replace the orginal one??Did you install all the DRIVERS etc?
It would be a good idea to reformat and reinstall. We don't know the age, or even the make of the laptop at this point.  OK...the hard drive that was in the laptop was an IBM Travelstar 4200 RPM 40 GB.  I put in a Seagate 5400 RPM 80 GB.  My laptop is an HP ze5170.  I've reformatted the new hard drive and reinstalled the OS twice now with the same results.  I replaced the original one because it crashed.Motherboard drivers installed ? ?

Check in Control Panel /System/Hardware/Device Manager...right clik IDE controller and report back what the properties say.I will be happy to give that information once this thing actually boots up.  I've been waiting an hour now and there is a progression line that is moving VERY slowly.  It's moving.  It's just moving at a snails pace.  Update - it never booted up after several retries.  So, reformatted hard drive and reinstalled XP.  Trying again.  If I can get Windows up and running, I'll provide the Device Manager info on IDE Controller.
OK, in Device Manager, under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller" the following is listed:

ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel

When I right-click on the ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller and choose Properties, there are a lot of tabs with information.  I'm not sure what information you were looking for, however, under Device Status, it SAYS "This device is working properly."

Does it say anywhere PIO mode by any chance ? ?I don't see anything that says PIO mode.  Update your BIOS!!! Quote from: [email protected] on June 25, 2007, 04:38:03 AM

Update your BIOS!!!

To be on the safe side i would ignore this advice for now...I'm not even sure what it means to update the BIOS.  I honestly am not sure what is wrong with this thing, but the IT guy at work today said that I could have purchased a hard drive that was just bad right out of the box.  Is that LIKELY?
