Solve : Help Getting Rid of Thing On My Desktop / RESOLVED?

Answer»

I don't know what I did, but this crap showed up on the left side of my screen. As far as I know, I was only clicking the mouse at the TIME. It's the same thing that is on the left side of any FOLDER you open up. I also can't use the bottom 1/4 of my screen other than the start up bar.

It's happened before, but that was pre-reformats, but I don't know how to get rid of it. It's PROBABLY simple, but.. can someone help me out?

Update: My desktop is now a folder. Same thing as the picture above, except no icons, just white like an empty folder... wtfhax.

Here is what it looks like now :/
It MADE my desktop a folder.. but I can't access the 'File; Edit' or whatever.

I asked some people for help and they told me to uncheck all of the boxes [Active Desktop] in Display Properties/Customize/Web, but everything was already unchecked.what  you doing before this happened??SOLUTION here

Solve : windows xp administrator?

Answer»

my system was locked by administrator password. now i can't access my system.anybody know remove or change windows xp administrator password. If it is your system and if you are the administrator, HOW could you forget the password? This one comes up every coupla days. (Or is it the same guy?) "Hey, folks, I'm locked out of my house. (It really is my house, honest!). Can anyone tell me how to pick a Yale lock using just a paper clip or a credit card?"

My Lambourghini won't start...i've misplaced the keys.

Can anyone help ? ?I'm trying to break into this bank, anyone know the security code?

...Sorry, a LITTLE too subtle?

(/sarcasm)There's a guy who lived over the road from me, he seemed an OK guy, I knew he sold marijuana. He gathered that I was interested in computers, he asked if I could help him with a problem he had. I said I'd try. He produced a Sony Vaio laptop in a shopping bag, and said that "his kids" had managed to change the BIOS password... He'd tried putting it in the freezer, all KINDS of things. Oddly enough, he didn't have the AC power supply/battery charger just then, couldn't find it, he said.

I knew his kids wouldn't dare mess with something like that. I told him he would have to call Sony and quote his receipt number, because they used "256 kbit encryption" on the password. He seemed a bit disappointed, but off he went. Next thing I know, he's on the front page of the local newspaper. "Drugs Raid Uncovers Aladdin's Cave Of Stolen Goods". He had been selling crack, heroin, marijuana, cocaine, to people and sometimes accepting stolen high value goods instead of cash, plasma TVs, laptops, jewellery obtained by mugging, all sorts of stuff, and that's how he'd bought his BMW which the police CONFISCATED. He won't need it where he is now, though.

I stayed. He MOVED, to jail.
What ! ! No laptops in prison ? ?

The police had been following known junkies and thieves and noticed that his address kept showing up. They kept watch over a few days and then got a judges warrant and raided the place at 4 AM one day.

Solve : Error Message When Using .reg file?

Answer»

I'll try to be brief and thorough. I'm running Windows XP on an emachines desktop. I connect to the internet using Netzero dialup and I read my email through Outlook Express 6. I use Internet Explorer 7 when I go online.

Recently, I downloaded and installed the new McAfee Security Suite, but when I connect online, my CPU usage jumps to 100% and stays there. The culprit is something called emproxy that was included in the McAfee program. It causes an ungodly slowdown.

I contacted McAfee, and they were aware of the problem and emailed me a file to fix the registry. I had to rename the file to end in .reg and then double-click on it to merge it into the registry.

Here is the problem: when I double-click on the file, an ERROR message pops up telling me "Windows Cannot Access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Now, I am the only user of this computer (not the one I am writing this on), and I have administrator rights. I wonder if I reboot into SafeMode, will I get this process to work? Other people with the same problem on the McAfee help forum have used this file without ENCOUNTERING the error message.

Other than trying SafeMode, I would try to enter the info from the file into the registry myself using the registry editor, but I don't have enough specific information about the info to feel comfortable doing this. I have requested more info from the McAfee help forum, but they haven't responded in a couple of days.

Any advice?

Thanks, WayneDid you know that the registry has security permissions just like files and folders?

OPEN the registry to the area you want to make the change and look at the tool at the top of the window for security to make the registry write able. I bet right now it is read only because macafee wants to help you with spyware wirting to the registry.

To assign permissions to a registry key
1.
 Open Registry Editor.

2.
Click the key to which you want to assign permissions.

3.
On the Edit menu, click Permissions.

4.
Assign an access LEVEL to the selected key as follows:

• To grant the user permission to read the key contents, but not save any changes made to the file, under Permissions for name, for Read, select the Allow check box.

• To grant the user permission to open, edit, and take ownership of the selected key, under Permissions for name, for Full Control, select the Allow check box.

• To grant the user special permission in the selected key, click Advanced.

5.
If you are assigning permissions to a subkey and you want the inheritable permissions assigned to the parent key to apply to the subkey also, click Advanced and select the Inherit from parents the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box.

Caution

• Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before MAKING changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on your computer.

Notes

• To open Registry Editor, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

• You must have appropriate permissions to make changes to a registry key. To maintain security when making changes to a registry key for which you need administrative credentials, log in as a member of the Users group and run Regedit as an administrator by right-clicking the Regedit icon, clicking Run as, and clicking an account in the local Administrators group. The Regedit icon does not appear by default from the Start menu. To access the icon, open the Windows or WINNT folder on your computer.

• If you own a registry key, you can specify the users and groups that can open that key. To determine who can open your registry keys, you need to assign permissions to them. You can add or remove users or groups from those authorized to access your registry keys at any time.

• The Special Permissions check boxes indicate whether custom permissions have been set for this key, but you cannot set special permissions by clicking these check boxes. Click Advanced to set special permissions.

Nothing worked! I kept getting the same message, no matter what I did.

Here is the path to the registry change contained in the file McAfee sent me:

[HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\Redirector\NoProxyList]

Currently, there is no NoProxyList subkey under the Redirector subkey. I assume the actions of the file will create one.

So, following your advice, I opened regedit and assigned Full Control permissions to the account with my name to the Redirector subkey. When I tried to double-click the .reg file, I got the same message.

Then I rebooted to SafeMode, logged in as Administrator (not the account with my name) and tried to double-click on the file. Still, I got the same error message.

I am near the end of my patience. I have been dealing with this Netzero/McAfee problem for over five weeks and nothing seems to help.

Sorry for the little rant, but thanks very much for your attention and suggestion. If there is anyone out there who can talk me through making this change manually in registry editor, I'd be very grateful for the help.
WayneMay this helps:

Code: [Select]# open regedit
# goto HKCR\regfile\shell\open\command
# change default string value to regedit.exe "%1"
# Do this also to HKCR\regedit\shell\open\command

I would un-install McAffee...demand a refund and DLoad and install AVG free before even thinking about editing the registry just to get a protection program to run properly...

Solve : Windows XP and Failed Hard Drive?

Answer»

I have a home computer that had the HARD drive fail. It was bought 3 years ago from a large box retailer with no windows xp INSTALL disks. It has the windows product key code on the computer itself. My question is there anyway to get a copy of windows xp to work on the new hard drive I will install? Or will I have to BUY a new copy on Win xp? I do have other COMPUTERS with Win XP on them, THOUGH the others are Dells and I think they just have reinstall discs? Any help would be great. Thanks,
bhenryYou will be able to use any Official MS XP disk to reinstall as the activation is tied to the product ID on your machine.

You need to make sure it is the same version i.e. XP Pro with SP2 or XP Home with SP2.

Activation by phone with MS you can ask them about getting a replacement CD although it may cost you $ $

Solve : Program too big to fit in memory (WinXP)?

Answer»

WinXP Pro SP2 was working all fine, and one day it simply started to pop-up "Program too big to fit in memory" messages in CMD windows when I try to open SPECIFIC programs. For example, I have an .exe on a CD. When I open it from the CD it works OK, but when I copy it to my hard disk and try to open it at a later time it just flashes the "too big to fit" message you can barely see, but I've managed after a few times, catching word by word. Then it loses its icon. When I compare the original file size and the 'corrupted' one's, I can see that the 'corrupted' one is bigger. Then I restore the original to the hard drive and it keeps getting corrupted every time.

Here are just examples of the executables that wouldn't work:
Microsoft Office applications, Windows Messenger (the one that comes with WinXP!), Outlook Express, Windows Movie Maker and almost any Windows program, but also the games I would have install would get corrupted (any game), Nero Burning ROM, Windows Live Messenger, DOWNLOADED executables, etc.
But these programs wouldn't never get corrupted:
BS Player, IrfanView, MSN Messenger 7.0, and a few more.

Ofcourse, I thought it was a Windows related problem (and I'm still not sure if it isn't), so I formated the disk and reinstalled WinXP. The problem got back. Then I thought that some of the applications I install corrupted the others. So I did the reinstall again and installed no additional programs nor drivers just to see if that was the problem. As days went by, I installed some applications and drivers I couldn't do without (modem driver, Messenger and I think nothing else). I kept my fingers crossed and thought the problem was over, when it came back. *censored*!
Then I thought I might be having a faulty Windows installation, so I tried to install WinMe and finally Win98 SE (in the year 2006! ). The older Windows had problems even with applications like Notepad, Wordpad and Paint. They didn't pop-up the message "Program too big to fit in memory" but they corrupted the .exes same way and after double-clicking an executable I'd get a dialog box saying "_______.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

When the other versions didn't change anything, I've went back to WinXP. I thought 'OK, maybe it is something with the memory' and tested it with games that have the highest memory requirements and it worked perfectly. Ofcourse, until the .exe would get corrupted.
Now I've found a temporary solution, I'm using WinXP and after every successful install I MAKE a restore point. Then I have to restore a few times a day when my files (only .exes, and not all) get corrupted! THIS IS AWFUL!

Now I'm starting to think it could be a hard disk problem or a motherboard virus (heard about those, but don't know how they tamper the system). The hard disk theory doesn't seem very likely to me 'cause I got a new hard disk 7 months ago, so I suppose that's not the problem but still have to test it.

And now, what do YOU say? I can only say I've encountered an unbelievable problem that I've never seen before at any computer, and I'm dealing with people's computers every day. I've never even heard about this kind of crap.
If I take my computer to a service center, they'll probably just format the disk and reinstall Windows including drivers, like I did. They'll see everything's OK and send me my computer back. And as soon as it's given back to me, it will be all wrong again.
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Download and run MemTest to check that RAM...also check your swapfile settings.

You can grab the diagnostics from the HDD MANUFACTURERS site to test that HDD.

Let us know.
patio.  8-)Definitely DIAGNOSE the RAM.All those executables getting corrupted would lead me to think VIRUS. It could be a BOOT sector virus, in which case you probably wouldn't get rid of it with fdisk. Using a boot disk that isn't write protected, you would be transferring the virus back and forth. Go to http://www.bitzenbytes.com/Content-Arcanum-18-1-34.html#boldscr
and have read.I'll try the HDD and RAM tests, but I'll go through the article about MB viruses later. I don't have time for that now. And as I looked at the article it seems to me it's pretty much about FDISK but I'll go deeper into it later.
Any other ideas? Not til you finish the other tests..

patio.  8-) Quote

Not til you finish the other tests..

patio.  8-)

8-) well, I tried the MemTest for Windows, it reported quite a few errors. I can't get the HDD diagnostics tool (bootable diskette) to work, but I'll still try Memtest86 (also a bootable disk) and if it reports many errors, I'll try replacing the RAM. Thanks, I'll let you know, guysHDD is all OK, I tried the diagnostics tool and the report was error-free, but both MemTest for Windows and WinDiag (bootable disk for memory testing) report errors (MemTest for Win reports about 6 errors in 30 mins and the manual says that on a computer with perfect RAM it could run for weeks without any errors). When I set the memory timing and other memory settings in BIOS to minimum, there are less memory-related (I guess) errors but still too many of them.

Does that mean I should replace the memory (buy a new one)?IF you loaded the default settings for your RAM (And not over or underclocked it) and it still reports errors, then yes, you will have to buy new RAM.

However, you might want to try a known fault-free memory stick as it could also be your motherboard giving up the ghost. Quote
Does that mean I should replace the memory (buy a new one)?

Before you go out and buy more RAM :
1. ensure you have plenty of free disk space
2. increase you virtual memory
(Right click my computer > properties > advanced > settings > advanced > change > change initial and max sizes to same, say about 2000 then you shouldn't have any more troubles.)
presuming you have a good 5Gb or free space on your HDD

of course if you do go buy more ram

Quick question, were you trying to view the sizes of multiple folders at the same time instead of one at a time?In Windows Explorer, if no file is highlighted, the size of the folder is shown below in the status bar

what i was trying to do was looking at alot of folders and trying to see which ones were empty so i could delete them (music folders)I do not currently know of a way to do that, but will let you know if I find one. Quote from: boo on June 09, 2007, 05:50:42 PM

I've GOT something which I think would delete every empty file/folder under Document and Settings (just did that so it wouldn't affect system folders/files).

Code: [Select]for /r %%i in ('dir "C:\Docume~1\*" /s /b') do (
if %~zi EQU 0 del %%i)
There is an app called Tree Size Pro which can show size of foldersor you could just select one or more folders and GO to properties... less EFFICIENT, but it works for me    Quote from: boo on June 09, 2007, 05:50:42 PM

if i give no to it ERROR 1706 cannot find the required files,& i dont have the cd rom drive of XP,please someone help"i dont have the cd rom drive of XP,please someone help"

As with all problems like this you are going to need an XP CD. You will probably need to do a repair INSTALL of XP, and from the sound of it Office as well.

An alternative would be to attempt a system restore to a known good point, prior to your installation of Yahoo Messenger.Everyone needs a real copy of Windows sooner or later. In your case it appears to be sooner.

Solve : Girlfriend's ghastly gridlock?

Answer»

My girlfriend's computer will seemingly crash and forces itself to shut down or something of that nature.

It'll happen randomly and without warning.

She's given me specs before, but I'm aware that it's an alright computer and that she's got protection (exactly what escapes me, but I believe Spybot is one of them)

In her own WORDS what keeps happening tonight:

(her SN) (12:53:39 AM): it seems as the computer completely restarts it slef, like it shuts off then trys to turn back on.
(her SN) (12:53:52 AM): but if i am not siging of AIM then that cant be the case.

She also noted that:

"well, okay, even though my computer is shutting off. AIM for some reason isnt logging me off, the minute my computer rebots it self.it took like 5minutes or so why? is my computer not completey shutting off, is it more hibernating? see i am not sure. Gr. :/"

What I thought, was maybe some important process is being interrupted, or fails in some way, causing most of her computer to shut down, but not-as important programs running (like AIM or an internet browser) continue to run until the rest of the computer shuts down.

However, I'm not really computer-savvy. I know a little here and there, but nothing on a subject as this. Any help?

I'll have a lot more information if she can sign on soon, such as computer specs, protection she's got, etc.

Yet again, thank you very much

EDIT:

She's got:

Microsoft Windows Xp professional (5.1, Build 2600)
502RAM
902MB available
Intel(R) Pentium(4) CPU 3.00GHz

AVG Free for Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Spyware & Spybot for Anti-Spyware
no Firewalls.

I'm currently having her run HJT and sending me the log in case it is necessary, lol.

As discussed in a previous topic, it appears that some programs remain running for a short time even after her computer seemingly shuts off. My thoughts on this discovery (read what she had said about AIM)  make me think some internal and very important process is crashing/failing, causing her computer to FORCE itself to shut down.

It happens randomly, sometimes she'll be offline for a few minutes, sometimes longer. Last night I think her longest was around 59 minutes and 47 seconds.

Last week her computer allowed her to be on it for hours at a time without any struggle. Weeks before, she's had trouble, and this week seems to be no different.

Yet again, any help would be graciously accepted.ok have her take the case off and clean any dust out of the computer

look at the event log and tell us what happens right before the crash happens

To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer.
I'll be sure to have her do that once I can contact her, thank you.welcome post what she finds in the event logUmm...if the PC is rebooting, then her not getting logged out of AIM, is to do with AIM, and not her machine.

A good internal clean MIGHT help, and go easy with the hover!!!

Also, just in case, un-plug the thing before you even undo a screw.dont use a vacum.... just a can of compresed air..

try UNINSTALL aim... but i would like to see what the log says..So you think AIM might be the cause of everything?

it might be just uninstall it and see if it still does.. Will do.

About an hour or two ago she attempted to get the log saved ONTO a notepad so she could transfer the log to me, so I could attach it here, but her computer died midway and she lost it.

Upon looking for a log on Event Viewer, it requested she chose between a few things, I think IE, System, Application, and a couple others. I asked her to give me System and Application, because I thought those might be the ones we need.

Media Center was another.

I'll be seeing her in about 40 minutes though, so I'll present this to her.Right now she is with her dad (who is a truck driver) on the way to New York and then Boston, so she cannot do anything with her computer right now.

She is expected to return in 3-5 days, so I'll have more info as soon as she returns.Well, we will still be here. Be sure and bring some details with you when you get back.

dl65  I tried to do a simple system restore, windows made me use the recovery disc and reregister. Afterwards I had this problem and a lot of windows security STUFF installed. Not really sure if this is a system problem as every web page is built differently...maybe it's just more noticable now...

To adjust it in IE6 go to View / Text Size on the toolbar and you can change the default.

The only other thing that may have changed would be the graphics resolution system-wide. To adjust this right clik an empty area of the desktop and select properties...No there is a difference. I now have to use the view text sizer which I never did before. I attempted to use an avatar which I had done before and it was too gigantic, took a quarter of the page. Is there something in the REGISTRY that could have been changed. Something somewhere that adjusts sizes to fit different sites automaticly?OK, Thanks I have solved the mystery and cured my problem. I went back to system restore and deleted the web browser heading. The previous time I deleted the entire toolbar heading which included something called an IP shell and the web browser. The IP shell must be what controls size. Thanks sorry for CAUSING a headache. My stupidity but it WORKED out.No apology neccessary....stop by anytime !

LMAO!!! Thanks alot man ^_^ Wow! What in the WORLD is that good for?try pressing ctrl+shift+esc Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 01, 2007, 06:14:31 PM

Wow! What in the world is that good for?

That toggles Task Manager between full mode and Tiny Footprint mode which some people find quite handy.

From a blog I found...

Quote
an obscure “feature” in Windows that makes Task Manager’s titlebar, menus, and tabs disappear, with no apparent way to ever get them back. This is called Tiny Footprint mode, and Raymond described it as

… one of those geek features that has created more problems than it solved. Sure, the geeks get their cute little CPU meter in the corner, but for each geek that does this, there are thousands of normal USERS who accidentally go into Tiny mode and can’t figure out how to get back.

The fortunate may find Microsoft’s Knowledge Base Article describing this mode and how to get out of it. Others are not so fortunate. One of Raymond’s commenters spent three days running antivirus software trying to find the problem. Another gave up and REINSTALLED Windows from scratch!

Well, after SEEING all those complaints, I stayed far away from Tiny Footprint mode and didn’t give it a second thought.

Until one day, when I was working on a bug and I wanted to watch Acrobat’s memory allocation and GDI and USER handles. I was getting really annoyed with how much screen space the Task Manager was taking up. It’s odd that Task Manager has such a large minimum window size.

Then I remembered Raymond’s article and gave it a shot. I double-clicked in the whitespace in Task Manager’s window, and not only did the title and menu bars go away (which I didn’t care about one way or the other), but I could resize the window as small as I wanted!

Now I use this mode all the time. Task Manager is a lot more useful when it can target just the information I want instead of taking up a big chunk of my screen.

It is unfortunate that there’s no easily discoverable way to get back out of this mode, but once you know that it just takes a double-click, there’s no real problem at all.

In FACT you can double click anywhere in the border area, not just at the top like my earlier picture.

All this does is open Task Manager. So there are two key combos to open up task manager? Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 02, 2007, 11:54:08 AM

ctrl+alt+del is mapped to something else on many systems, eg login/out.

Solve : Backup, Format, Re-install XP SP2 - My first time?

Answer»

I've got to format reinstal an XP machine...for my first time, and I'm a little bit intimidated...anyone got any advice, or sites/tutorials I should have a look at first?

I'm doing it Thursday (tomorrow) night, so rapid advice is appreciated!!!

Thanks chapsHi Sid,

Don't be intimidated by this PROCESS... Once you've done it you wonder why you were worrying.

How are you going to back up your existing data? DVD, External HDD...?

Once you have backed up your data, its just a matter of setting the bios to boot from CD first and follow the instructions.

What are the specs of your system at the moment? ... And why do you have to format/re-install? back up there is some reading material for you on backing up your data, but basicly you just need to burn any important files to cds or PUT them on a flashdrive

heres how to reformat and reinstall windowsI'm not sure of the specs, it's the computer at work.

The reason for the need of a reinstall is, somehow I corrupted it and it won't accept new hardware (IE the all important printer).

I'm gonna back it up onto a slaved HDD, one of my own, then disconnect the slave, format, reinstall, then re connect the slave, and restore data.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight, or if there are any things that often cause hiccups or anything.

I'm doing it at 8:30pm so there is plenty of time to read up and make sure I know exactly what I'm doing, and what I should be doing.

The added pressure of it being a work machine is kinda daunting, but it shouldn't be a problem, especially if I back everything we need up.

Again, cheers for your insight guys.

When I can, I'll try and help too. Quote from: unlovedwarrior on May 30, 2007, 10:08:56 AM

Yeah I did, thanks.  Doesn't sound too complicated!   Got all my files ready to back-up, going to either use a slaved HDD, or my iPod via USB.  Haven't decided which yet.  The machine could do with an internal clean, so we'll see...depends how I feel later.

Cheers for the help chaps. For backing up, I'd use the HDD.  I think it would be a bit more reliable than an iPod, but either one should be fine.  Once you've done that, all you really have to do is follow the provided steps.  It's really simple once you're actually doing it.  Let us know how it goes. I'll prob try the iPod first, as means of easyness, but if that just doesn't want to happen, I'll slave the bad boy up.

Of course, taking all nessacary anti-static precautions!  ...lol.lol i use my ipod for a back up before i had my beast computer i have now, try zipping you documents so they will be smaller.
you could also just for more back email your important stuff to yourselfThere is only about 2GB that NEEDS saving, so my iPod should be enough, I think.

But any troubles, I have that HDD I can slave...should be sorted, will let you know.k good luckDoing the backup format reinstall now:

Good thing I grabbed my HDD, the problem I'm re-installing to fix, has prevented me from using my iPod as a USB MSD, which i suppose is a good thing, because at least the time I wasted d/ling iTunes to no avail, will be recovered on the restore, SEEING as USB is limited to 11(?)mb/s and ATA/IDE is at least 66mb/s.

Lesson to all:

ALWAYS have a back-up method.

Also, good thing the DVD Burner is an IDE device, seeing as the hard-drive on it is SATA.  My back up here would've been going home and grabbing some CD's (even SLOWER method).  But instead, I've just got the DVD and the HDD sharing an IDE chain.

Also, I'm going to unplug everything that is connected, and add one device at a time, once the re-install is complete.

Sorry, I know I'm talking to myself, but it's boring here, and I suppose if this helps someone, then great!

Solve : XP Pro Boot Loop?

Answer»

I'm sure this has been posted, and fixed, here before, and I've done searches on several variations of keywords, but maybe I'm just not thinking of the right ones, so right off, I'm going to apologise for re-posting an old problem if I just didn't find what I needed.

My problem is this: One DAY, out of the blue, my Toshiba laptop got itself stuck in a boot loop. It will boot as far as the WINDOWS loading screen and then go back to the Toshiba startup screen. I've tried booting into safe mode, same thing. I have a feeling I need to boot with a boot disc, but I don't know how to MAKE one. Generally, I know just enough about computers to get me into trouble, which is why I've come for help.
I do not have the original Windows XP Pro installation disc, nor any of the recovery discs. I bought this computer from a friend and neglected (stupidly) to get any of that stuff. I know that on earlier VERSIONS of Windows you could make a boot disc from a running copy of the Windows software, I just don't know how it was done.
Any help would be appreciated, and once again I apologise if I'm rehashing something thats been gone over before.SOONER or later everyone needs a real Windows CD of their own. In your case it appears to be sooner.

Solve : Active Directory information needed?

Answer»

Hello everyone
QUESTIONS about Active Directory?? I want SPECIFIC users to have CERTAIN printers when they logon to their COMPUTERS, that way I won't have to go to each computer and configure their printers.  Any suggestions :-?

Something I have been trying to figure out in Active directory is, how can I remotely logoff a user, without physically going to their computer to log them off.

Thank you in advance for any suggestionsThe printer issue is tackled with a script.

objNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\server\printer"

The above will map a shared printer, once you've defined objNetwork.  That is done here:

Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")

So, your simple printer mapping script will look something like this:

Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
objNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\server\printer"

This is very dumbed down.  I'm not sure this is place to get into the advanced topics of scripting.

Once you have your script written and tested, create a group policy that calls the script on user LOGIN (exact procedure will depend on the version).  Apply the policy to users based on who should have access to which printers.

Rinse and repeat for each printer you need control for.  Just modify the \\server\printer portion for each printer.

Solve : dumping IE?

Answer»

Hello great and mighty computer geeks I went with patio and raptors advise and  installed firefox browser, seems much better by the way. went to microsoft site for directions on removing IE from my old 700mhz SYSTEMAX system, running windows 2k, I neglected to add the uninstall with the service pk 4 first time round so I just started over again and reinstalled win2k but to my surprize the IE wasn't listed in the control panel programs section, in fact it read no programs listed! I've started over from scratch on this system 4 times now because of system crashes and what not over the past 2yrs. I've reinstalled all my programs ie comodo firewall, adware, spybot etc. I did not install the msn messenger for it just brought up the IE, so I just installed my msn mail application. opened a gmail ACCOUNT, and started my yahoo messenger back up. I did not upgrade the IE from 5.01 so I can still connect to microsoft for updates. at this point the IE only opens when I connect  to microsoft. but I'm wondering if  its still messing around in my system without my knowledge, by the way I love this place, any thoughts on this matter, am I ok just leaving things the way they are now?Total removal of IE causes more pains than you would want...  It causes no problems if it's ignored...

See here for a short comment...

Good luck

There's no NEED to remove IE as it is an integral part of WIndows, without it, you can't connect to Windows Update. And some programs use it as well; do install the latest updates for it, though, because should you ever use it you really don't want to be caught with IE 5.01.Dusty and Raptor-thanks for the quick reply, cool article Dusty! and I did update 5.01 however I'll go ahead and upgrade to IE 6, as long as I dont install msn messenger It doesn't pop up. as ALWAYS thanks all for the good a straight advice, talk at ya later on the ole thinkpad with docking station a friend gave me. with no key to undock it of course Quote

as long as I dont install msn messenger It doesn't pop up.

What do you mean by that?what I ment by that is when I had the msn messenger, everytime I'd start it up my comodo personal firewall would start popping up with IE wanting to connect to the internet, sometimes 2 or 3 applications would want my ok to connect. If I denied any of them the msn messenger wouldn't open, which I why I didn't reinstall that messenger, don't need it anyway, I always used the yahoo messenger. Quote

Well, the firewall will recognize a change in IE's executable and regard it as a new program, but why MSN Messenger comes with IE6SP1 I do not know...

Is that a freeware firewall, Comodo? Quote

Yeah, I have been trying it for about a month myself after I had problems with Sunbelt Kerio, except with a WINDOW that pops up too much when I run Avant Browser I havent had any problems with it personally....Incidentally, Yahoo messenger runs on top of IE. It won't work if IE is removed.

Solve : Phantom F: Drive (Fixed !!!)?

Answer»

Hey all, I tried searching for this but couldn't find what I needed.

I'd installed a second hard drive F: which died on me.  I removed the hard drive but did not reconfigure the system.

I think that screwed something up.  Everytime I try to download programs onto my C: drive, my system says it can't find F: drive.

How do I delete F: from the DOS (or whatever) so I can download programs onto my computer.

The computer is a 6/7 year old Dell DIMENSION 4100 with Windows XP installed.  866MHZ

[size=18]Oct 23rd -FIXED !!![/size]I found this in windows help files...

To assign, change, or remove a drive letter
Using the Windows interface

Open Computer Management (Local).
In the console tree, click Disk Management.
Where?

Computer Management (Local)
Storage
Disk Management

Right-click a partition, logical drive, or VOLUME, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Do ONE of the following:
To assign a drive letter, click Add, click the drive letter you want to use, and then click OK.
To modify a drive letter, click it, click Change, click the drive letter you want to use, and then click OK.
To remove a drive letter, click it, and then click Remove.
 Important

Be careful when making drive-letter assignments because many MS-DOS and Windows programs make references to a specific drive letter. For example, the path environment variable shows specific drive letters in conjunction with program names.
 Notes

To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.
A computer can use up to 26 drive letters. Drive letters A and B are reserved for floppy disk drives, but you can assign these letters to removable drives if the computer does not have a floppy disk drive. Hard disk drives in the computer receive letters C through Z, while mapped network drives are assigned drive letters in reverse order (Z through B).
You cannot change the drive letter of the system volume or boot volume.
An error message may appear when you attempt to assign a letter to a volume, CD-ROM drive, or other removable media DEVICE, possibly because it is in use by a program in the system. If this happens, close the program accessing the volume or drive, and then click the Change Drive Letter and Paths command again.
Windows 2000 and Windows XP allow the static assignment of drive letters on volumes, partitions, and CD-ROM drives. This means that you permanently assign a drive letter to a specific partition, volume, or CD-ROM drive. When you add a new hard disk to an existing computer system, it will not affect statically assigned drive letters.
You can also mount a local drive at an empty folder on an NTFS volume using a drive path instead of a drive letter.Go to the BIOS setup screen (F2 during boot) and turn off the second hard drive option. I am sure it is still set to AUTO.  I tried both of your suggestions and it still says "Invalid drive F:\ " when trying to install a program.

BTW, when I went to computer management, it only listed my C drive.  When I went to the boot menu, I disabled what appeared to be the second hard drive.

Is the problem existant within the NET BIOS or something?...like permanently attached to my system?

Any othe suggestions?  I really appreciate all your help!So this is ONLY with downloads? If so what are you using to download with? Quote

So this is ONLY with downloads? If so what are you using to download with?

Yes, I misspoke my first post in that I can download onto the C: drive, but when I open the run file, when the file (in a specific case, Adobe Acrobat Reader Update and iTunes) goes through windows installer for setup configuration, that's when I get the message of invalid drive F:\...so I don't even get the chance to specify C: as the place I want the program installed.

The issue is when I installed the second hard drive, I moved a lot of my big program files over to that drive b/c my C: was all filled up.Remove it from the Device Manager. Quote

Now I'm getting really frustrated.  You guys are being so helpful, but everything I'm trying isn't working.  I tried the idea I quoted to no avail.   hrrmmmpphh.
Try this:

1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box opens.

2. In the Open field, type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.

3. In the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:

Code: [Select]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
4. In the right pane, note the values in the Data column of each entry.
If any value contains a drive that is not correct for your computer, right-click the entry and select Modify.

5. Type the correct drive letter in the Value data field, and then click OK. For example, if one of the values is
"F:\WINDOWS\Fonts", the drive letter should be CHANGED to a valid drive on the system, such as “C:\WINDOWS\Fonts".

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each entry whose Data value contains an incorrect drive.

7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each of the following registry keys as well:

Code: [Select]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

This was the winning solution.  I found many instances of F: vs. C: within the registry keys.  After changing them to C:, I'm now able to install programs again.

thanks, you guys have been helpful.how many resource demanding programs do you have?? try after to reformat or whatever installing one at a time and SEEING if you can determine which one is slowing your machine down.

if you dont reformat then make sure you go into the programs folder in your drive and make sure all of the program folder that you uninstalled are removed then defragrament.

If you do a clean install don't install Mcafee.
Use AVG & the XP firewall to start with.

Leave Adobe out of the equation as a test too.

Do you have a lot of picture files on the computer?yeah i have a ton of picture files from my digital camera...

i wont install mcafee or any other big programs. as far as resource demanding programs go, i have itunes, photoshop, frontpage, aim, aol. those are the main ones. aim is always on but even before i open any of these programs there is slowness, like i said the windows startup sound skips, so i dont think that would matter correct?

ill post my progressu need protections so get avg free like suggestedI'm sure if you turned of enough running processes/programs you would get to a stage where your computer doesn't skip.
Then you could start turning things on until you found the problem.
DL65 is about to post, let's see what he thinks.kable......  It would appear from all the info you have provided that you must either invest in a new larger hard drive or remove perhaps 10 or more gigs ( which I believe Fed has already suggested ). I also see that you have 47 applications running ........ You should try to reduce that number. Also , with XP, it requires at least 10% free space available for the system restore feature to function properly.......

dl65  Hi DL65, ltns

i found that indexing service was on last night. i thought i had turned it off via services.msc but after checking properties on C: the checkbox there said it was enabled. i unchecked and it went through a whole process that took a long time.

i notice bit smoother response in the computer after:

taking off indexing service
deleting 15 gigs - now have 25ish free 46 used
NOT running defrag.

i am going to run a defrag now. would checking the box 'compress drive c: to save space" help me at all?it might give you a lil more free spaceI would SUGGEST against using disk compression...it makes certain apps go crazy and do wierd things to your data...

patio.  8-)i have uninstalled almost everything i can, except BROWSER, aim, frontpage, and cuteftp. other than that i have gone through control panel and got rid of everything. also deleted all my music files. i now have 45 gigs free and 25 used. still have the skipping problem. any other thoughts before i go through with the reformat? if i could solve the problem without reformatting it would be great but it seems that we won't be ABLE to figure it out.

Solve : Extract error??

Win.98se. Legit cd.

Am trying to extract a CONTENTS list from .cab files on the original cd.  Most give no problems but WIN98_56.CAB will not list althought it shows as having over 1meg content.  The Extract prog gives the message:

"WTCache.*censored*: starts in CABINET Win98_55 on disk '51'. No matching files."

WTCache.*censored* is the last file in Win98_55.cab, don't know what "disk '51'" refers to.

A similar message is produced when trying to extract Driver14.cab.

Are the files corrupt :-?  Could some kind person try extracting listings from their cd please :-?

Solve : I hear clicking ! Help plz?

Answer»

Hi there im new here wonderd if some one can help me with a problem  :-/
Now ans agian i hear clicking like as though some one is clicking the mouse im pretty sure it comes from the speakers and not from inside the pc (e.g sound or video card)
It ALMOST sounds like there is two MOUSES in my pc and some one clicks it now and agian.

Any ideas cheers Wes Sound driver and/or virus.

Google: ad aware SE
Google: Registry Mechanic

Edit: Its a constant clicking or just intermittent?Na you hear it now and agian not like click-click-click-click all the time every like 5-10-15 mins or so it just sounds like a double click :OCan you unplug the speakers & see if it stops?
Clicking can be the start of a hard drive failure, let's HOPE the NOISE is COMING from the speakers. I can only hear it when i have a sound sorce plugged in e.g headset or speakersMice ? ? ? Quote

Mice ? ? ?

lol, i think we had a topic somewhere in here where we heard a lady had a snake in her computerCan i ask you something. Does the clicking occur when you are on the internet or when you are offline.
If you hear  that it is only happens on the internet then you might want to check for spyware on your computer.. or try suing firefox as your broweser and see if that helps..

Solve : Problem With Only Booting From Disk?

Answer»

Hi there, i have a wierd problem. For some reason, ever since i formatted my computer, it only boots up when the windows XP cd is in. when i TAKE it out it gives me an error before start up, along the lines of, "ERROR READING DISK, INSERT SYSTEM DISK". How do i fix this problem, so that it boots naturally?

ThanksDid you use a real Windows CD that says Microsoft all over it? What boot order is SET in the BIOS? What happened requiring a Windows install? That and a lot more details are needed.

See below. When your computer is booting up there is a BUTTON that you can CLICK to view and edit your bios configuration. On some computers it is the Delete key, or some others n F key such as F1 F2 F3 Make your floppy set to 1ST     HD set to 2nd    CD set to 3rd    and if you can, check to search for other boot devices.  Try reatsrting and tell us what happens.

Solve : Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for ICT?

Answer»

Is there any available SOPs for use of IT equipment that is available out there? I need a model to refer to when I'm developing one for the company I work for. I've never done it before. I'll check my online Cisco course to see if I can find any for you, I hope I still remember the password..A Google search on writing an SOP yields some references that might be helpful.  Some of them pertain to specific industries, but the general approach could be APPLIED to other areas, with appropriate modification.  An example: http://www.cdc.gov/od/ohs/sympsium/symp11.htm.  Note that SOP also means Statement of Purpose.  I presume you mean Standard Operating Procedure. Is this what you're looking for?

           13.1
      Troubleshooting Basics
            13.1.3
      Gathering information

Once the problem has been identified, the next step is to gather information so a solution can be developed. Fast and EFFICIENT troubleshooting involves gathering the correct information to develop an accurate solution. Computer problems can range from simple to extremely complex. However, computer problems can become increasingly complicated if the technician does not have the correct information.

Technicians have many resources available to help them to diagnose the problem. Technicians can use digital multimeters (DMM), software-based diagnostic tools, and the end user to gain information. Technicians can visually inspect the systems, look for broken components, and LISTEN for EVIDENCE of a problem.

The end user can provide insights into how the computer was operating before the system had problems. The technician can document any changes made by the end user that might have adverse affects on the system. The end user can also describe any changes to the system, errors that were received, and system performance leading up to the problem.

The technician needs to know how to properly question the end user. The following is a list of typical questions that the technician will need to ask:

    * Can the error be described? Document the description of the problem.
    * Was an error message received? Computers are manufactured with self-diagnostic tools. If the computer fails one of the self-diagnostics tests, it will typically generate an error message.
    * Ask the end user to recall the error message or recreate it. In the case of a power-on-self-test (POST) error, ask the customer for the number of beeps heard.
    * Has the problem or error occurred before? Try to establish a timeline for the event. A timeline will help identify potential causes of the event. If the problem has happened before, document the changes that were made to the system.
    * Have there been any changes to the system? Identify recent changes to the hardware or software. Changes made in an attempt to correct previous problems can be the source of the current problem. Also, adding or removing hardware and software can create unforeseen problems with system resources.

    NOTE:

Remember to approach the end user in a respectful and polite manner. Some end users might hesitate to admit what they have done to the system. A professional approach establishes the trust required that enables the end user to discuss any changes.

    * Can the error be reproduced? Reproducing the problem will allow the end user to describe the error exactly. An onsite technician can then see and experience the problem firsthand.

CAUTION:

Do not reproduce the error if it can adversely affect the computer components. For example, do not reproduce a problem such as an arcing power supply.

After asking all the necessary questions, obtaining answers, and assessing the answers, the problem should be isolated as either hardware or software RELATED. The problem can then be isolated to a specific component or part of the system. Once this happens, the technician can then proceed with developing a solution to the problem as outlined in the next section.

Network Server Problem Solving
These are a few typical questions to ask when there is a problem with a network server:

    * When was the last time that the network server was operational?
    * What has changed since the last time the network server was operational?
    * What hardware has been recently added to the network server?
    * What software has been recently added to the network server?
    * Who first reported the problem with the network server?
    * Where is the network server logbook?
    * How is the failure of the network server affecting the operation of the corporation?

Use the senses to answer questions:

    * Is the server room too hot?
    * Is the server room above the maximum operating humidity for the equipment?
    * Is there the smell of something burning in the server room?
    * Is smoke visible in the server room?
    * Are server alarms sounding?
    * Are UPS alarms sounding?
    * Are error lights flashing on disk drives?
    * Are any of the network server components hot to the touch?
    * Are power cords disconnected from any of the components?
    * Are network cables disconnected from any of the network devices, including the servers?
    * Are all external SCSI cables properly connected?

Using the senses to answer these basic questions is an integral part of troubleshooting. Also important are hardware/software tools and utilities.

Solve : Screen Hesitation?

Answer»

I'm not sure if I am looking at a Windows problem, a driver problem or maybe even a hardware problem with this one.  The basic problem is that my screen will start hesitating at regular one second intervals.  I can still operate the computer, move the mouse, execute programs, etc but the hesitating makes it very difficult to get anything accomplished.  Everything is affected when it starts whether it is a video game, streaming video, music played from the hard drive or what have you.  I can't seem to find anything that sets it off such as a program starting up or the computer being on for a given amount of time.  Sometimes it might take three hours, other times it might take five minutes.  RESTARTING the computer corrects the problem until it starts again which can be another hour later or take just five minutes.  Going to standby mode and starting up again also works most times though I have had one or two instances where it did not.  I've tried looking at my Task Manager when the problem starts but nothing stands out.  Device manager also does not show anything malfunctioning when screen is hesitating.

I'd like to avoid wiping the hard drive if at all possible.

Actions taken:  Updated Video driver, Cleared temporary internet files, cleared cookies, defragged, rain dance, sacrificed a goat.  Okay, I'm kidding about the rain dance.

Here are the computer specs:

Gateway, Intel [email protected] 1.8Ghz, 256M Ram (Yeah, I know I need to get with the times),
Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 with Service Pack 2
Video Card: Radeon 9200
Video Driver Version: 8.231.0.0

Thanks!Do you try to kill viurs of your system?May be it's the cause to make you screen hesitating! And anther way you can reformet you system,of course ,it is the worst way you choose! You definitely need more RAM!! Try disabling any startup item that is not absolutely necessary. Run the FEWEST possible programs at any one time. Memory hungry programs causes Windows to have go back and forth to the swap file, resulting in the hesitation. The less you have running at any one time the less the swap file has to be used. Also check the services that are running and disable any that are not needed for your particular USAGE. Indexing MUST go. It can make searches a little faster but with only 256M it causes havoc with everything else.I forgot to mention that if you have a second HD (not just different partition), move the swap file it. With small amounts of RAM, it can give you a dramatic performance boost as it will ALLOW Windows to read and write to both drives sinultaneously. Quote

Solve : Video card drivers!!!?

Answer»

I can't find any video card drivers for my ATI rage 128 pro GL after some virus wiped out my XP boot loader. And I don't have any CDs; I bought it from a shop. I only have 64MB RAM and a Pentium III 800MHz. I've already looked at the ATI SUPPORT & drivers page to no success. I tried the Rage 128/128 pro driver and it says my card isn't compatible. I am using Windoze 98SE which assumes I have a 256k graphics adapter when, in reality, I have a 32MB rage 128 pro gl card!

Note: It actually says 'Standard PCI graphics adapter' which is obviously not right; it's on the AGP bus.
HELP!!!
thanks to anyone who can help! The shop should have given you the CD's when you bought it, unless it was a dodgy shop.

So you started with XP and now moved back down to Win 98? Did you do a full reformat? There's this guy around here we call the G-Man who tells us to check google.com first,  they seem to have many choices *.

[highlight]http://www.driver-downloads.com/ati-driver.htm[/highlight]

i'm pretty sure theres a driver in there 4uCheck ATI's website, also.  Ia already checked ATIs website. They don't have anything for me there. Thanks anyways though.

about the reformatting. You're half right:
I had an NTFS partition (like everyone else)
We moved, and then it wouldn't get past the selection menu; it froze whenever i selected a menu. So I got fed up and reinstalled my old hard drive that had Windows 98SE (I have FOUR hard drives). Then I started using Windows 98SE but it kept giving me blue screens every second. I soon found it was the memory so I messed around until I found one that WORKS. I used Windows 98SE in 640x480x4 mode and collected some viruses (I don't have anti-virus). I copied all my music, documents, videos, pictures, etc... to my secondary hard ( yet another drive). Formatted my hard drive from a boot disk, reinstalled windows 98se, installed some music programs (winamp, real) got my wireless driver working, and i'm still stuck in 640x480x4 mode.

I already tried google too. And i'm not sure how to navigate driver-downloads.com (i've tried that too).

Thanks for the help though!!
by selection menu I mean the boot Menu (Safe mode, NORMAL...)
Not even a DOS prompt can be loaded. I suspect a virus infected my computer.
All the viruses are gone now though. Unless microburner has a virus.

thanks again Quote

This is just asking for trouble no matter which flavor of Windows you are running, especially with all the excellent Free options out there...

DLoad install and update the following:

AVG Free
Spybot Search and Destroy   Free
AdAware    Free
Ewido    Free
CCleaner   Free

patio.  8-)OK, I found the driver I NEED now how do I download it?
There is no hyperlink on the page. so I can't download it.

Oh and about the Anti-virus: How much resources do they take? I don't have much resources. Thanks a bunch!

Sorry if you don't like the marquee (I couldn't help it). Nevermind that, how much effort does it take to swap hardrives and reformat? Get a virus scanner now!In your post you say"I have 64 MB of ram".....Why?

Windows XP will run fine with a Pentium III 800 mhz CPU.

Your video card needs DirectX8 or higher are you using it?

Windows 98/ME Driver build 4.13.7192

Requirements
Windows 98, Windows 98 SE or Windows ME
DirectX 8.x or higher

Well it came with 160MB but it proved faulty. But I haven't tested it so that may prove to be M$ doing another Hardware scam.

As far as the AV goes:
Thanks. A lot!!

It's not the CPU thats bad, its the RAM.Thanks, I just installed AVG. Works OK.

I can't install Direct X until I have at least 256 colors which I can't get until the drivers are installed which I assume cannot be installed until Direct X is installed...
It's a never-ending loop! Guess M$ and ATI never thought of that. eh?Why can you not do that? What error message do you receive? The colour depth shouldn't make a difference to the installation.

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp - memory tester

Microsoft don't make their own brand of RAM, as far as I can tell, so simply blaming them is pointless. No they don't. But they do make DirectX. I wasn't TALKING about RAM. But thanks for the advice anyways. Maybe it was the viruses that were making my PC act funny.I'll give the rage128 pro drivers one more try...

I gave them a try and look what my computer gave me as gratitude:

Severe
This driver is not compatible with the adapter installed on your computer.

Hi,

Then it says cannot find the specific file. Make sur you specify the correct path and filename. How can I get rid of it? I followed some of the methods on the internet but none of them work.

BI really can't help you because i'm having the same problem with my jumpdrive: I can't modify anything. Well i WAS. But how I fixed may not be what you want: I erased the drive from linux. Formatting would have done the trick too though. However NEITHER is really a good idea (unless you INTENDED on formatting anyways).

Sorry I wasn't able to help.Try deleting the offending folder in SafeMode...

If that fails DLoad killbox and use it.

Re-create the disaster and write down the details...I just had this screen tonight. I had a problem with my HP 1350 PSC not OPERATING right. Did an uninstall and install and no luck. Then had an issue with a window that would not close so I reloaded xp. When loading the sata drivers, had an error that a file did not load correctly. After xp loaded got the blue screen with the same error code. Went back and loaded Xp and the Sata drivers with no errors in the sata drivers install.

You may have to reinstall your sata drivers.what do mean reinstall my sata drive? reistall in windows?

i dont have windows my drive is format...
Diagnose the Hard Disk Drive, you can do so by downloading the software appropriate for your Hard Disk Drive from the following website:

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities

This will REQUIRE you to make a bootable diskette, the diagnostic program will do so for you.

Diagnose the memory (RAM) with the following program:

Windows Memory Diagnostic

This will require you to make a bootable diskette, the diagnostic program will do so for you.On your motherboard cd you should have an option to make a floppy disk with your sata drivers. You should do this. Then when installing windows, you get an option to hit F6 for a third party driver, you should do this. Insert floppy. During the install you should get this option again. once drivers are installed windows should install normally.

more info on your system would help. But one more reasons that little OLD floppy can be QUITE useful. The best $10 accessory going. Even better than a cup holder.  It is a hard drive-related problem.  Possible causes:

* boot sector virus
* hard drive failure
* hard drive incompatibility with your version of Windows
* hard drive device driver corrupted or missing

Solve : Is an ERD or ASR possible without a Floppy or USB??

Answer» Thank you for TAKING the time to read this post & answer with your best advice!!

Here are the factors to keep in mind before responding:
1.  Floppy drives are no longer common to a computer.
2.  "Recovery Disks" are the normal from companies (Which I find very irritating!)
3.  Not everyone has a USB jump drive at their disposal.

With that said, I am trying to determine 3 things:
1.  Can an ERD or ASR be created without a Floppy Drive and without a USB jump drive?
2.  Is there a Freeware program that can help create the ERD/ASR without the Floppy/USB drive?
3.  Is there a way to automate the TASK of updating your ERD or ASR so that you will always have a current copy?
(I was thinking along the lines of COPYING the necessary files to another HD or emailing the current update to a Gmail account)

I have researched the internet but keep finding links only to using Floppy Drives or USB Jump Drives.
I also keep finding links regarding ERD Commander 2000 which is expensive & not the solution I can use for friends.

Thank you again for your valuable time & appreciated advice!!Why not just buy a copy of Acronis True Image and be done with it for about $30?Thanks GX1_Man for your advice,

The reason why is because if I'm helping a friend/relative in setting up their computer for preventing disaster I don't want them to have to buy anything if at all possible.

I have a personal copy of HDclone but I can't be passing that around nor do I want everyone to call me up every time they want to update their system.

I'm trying to discover if it there is a solution that everyone can use without having to pull more money from their finances.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.  Much appreciated GX1_Man!!!$30 is a small price to pay for software that will do the job Acronis does.  I believe that it's worth that price for the piece of mind that it can give.

Alan <><
What do you think, Alan? Was that the best $30 you have spent in a while?im going to be buying it for my experiment.I tell you GX1_Man, I can't thank you ENOUGH for your thoughtful advice about Acronis (though don't think there's any cash coming your way  ).

I now have it backing up all but my server OS's and I feel pretty good and sleep BETTER night

Solve : How do I become Administrator??

Answer»

I have Windows 2000 PROFESSIONAL, IE6, Hewlett Packard Intel PII.  I bought this pc in 4/2003 from a FRIEND who built it.  He had himself as Admin. in case I needed things fixed and I was User1.

I tried going into Start-Control Panel-Password to change it.  Now, I have to click on box comes up that states "not ABLE to log you on" and then click on ok and type in User1 every time to boot up.  The friend gave me his password, but then I get his browser and desktop!

He no longer does fixing of pc's anymore so can I delete his information?  How do I do this and make myself Administrator?  Cannot get my Maestro Keyboard to work either and cannot do alt codes since I first must uninstall PREVIOUS keyboards and drivers and there is a long list when I search from Start in Files.  How do I do this also?  Delete everything in the list?  Thanks. If you have the Administrator login capability, you can change the permissions for the user account to administrator privileges.

Do NOT delete the Administrator account or you will be FUBAR. You can change this to meet your needs or, better yet, just leave it alone.  Make it easy on yourself.  If you have the Windows 2000 cd, reinstall after saving the stuff you want.

Alan <><  Format and reinstall? A man after my own heart!

Here is all the information on that board. Very nice except it uses RDRAM, which is expensive, so that  128 meg. you apparently have will be what you get unless you wan to spend some ca$h. Win 2000 is your best bet, as that may be enough.

Solve : multiple issues. #1 winxp startup?

Answer»

Do you have Windows Xp Home or Professional? Do you have the Service Packs 1 and 2?professional.
not sure about service pack.. how do i find out?Well the easiest way is to open my computer, right click anywhere except on a drive or the toolbar and go down to properties. It will say Your computer name, specs,Operating system and whether it has the service packsi have neither.
what r they?So when you Went to my computer etc. And you saw your specs and its says System: Windows Xp Professional Version 200* and thats all it says for system? The Service packs are updates/upgrades for windows xp I'd advise getting Service Pack 2 soon, you can GET it off the Microsoft site.i have microsoft UPDATE.
it pops a window up when new updates r available.
is that not the same thing?

im so sorry about all the dumb QUESTIONS.. but on the bright side u guys r probably getting a good laugh at me!!  No ones laughing believe me I've done some pretty stupid stuff coming to computers. I wish Someone smarter then me would say something but, i'll keep rambling on. Windows Service Pack Is 1 a SECURITY update, you're vulnerable to hackers etc. without it. 2. Upgrades, it upgrades stuff (thats all i know  )
but You definetly need the service packs lol.hey as long as u know what ur rambling about...
i really appreciate it
ok i'll check it outJust DLoad and INSTALL SP2 from the MS site...

However this is far away from your original issues...will do.

Solve : WinXP Pro Doesn't Boot?

Answer»

I cannot get WinXP Pro_SP2 to consistently boot up.
This is a sudden problem, not GRADUAL.  My (7) year old system has been working quite well when I had
shut it down for the night (2) days ago.  It suddenly wouldn't boot up the following morning.
The BIOS goes through its POST phase after which the screen goes black.  About (10) minutes
later a DOS-type message comes up to "apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not
start successfully....." and gives the various options to choose: safe mode; last known good
configuration; start windows normally, etc.  Whichever I choose, nothing happens for about another
(10) minutes after which a progress-type bar appears below the message and slowly advances
across, after which the system restarts and re-cycles again as described above.
Happily, once in a while, rather than re-cycling,  Windows ACTUALLY boots up and I am able to do
some WORK.  I now dare not to shut down the system but to keep it running.
I have a Pentium II, (384)MB RAM, and a new (80) GB HDD installed (2) months ago.  I have SP2
as a result of FIRST loading the original SP1 version and re-loading the SP2 disk on top of that.  I've run
Scandisk, jv16 on the Registry, Zone Alarm, AdAware and PrevX installed, and deleted some suspect apps.
Nothing I do seems to help. It won't even boot to Safe Mode.
I didn't have a good point at which I could perform a System Restore.  I had thought to reload
Windows.  However, if I reload the SP1 disk I get the message that it's an older version than what's
installed.  I would then have to reload the SP2 disk.  I, of course, backed up my data.
I, and my computer, certainly hope that you can help.  Thanks in advance, ohgee.Repair Install of XP

I suggest printing this out for reference beforehand.

Your programs and data will remain intact if this done properly...

patio.  8-)Patio, thanks for responding.

I haven't slipstreamed my SP2 disk with the SP1 original.  I had thought of conducting a Repair.  However, since after doing a Repair with the SP1 original, I would have to reload SP2 on top of that into the machine.  In that case, wouldn't it be simpler to just reload SP2 without going through a Repair?  Would the SP2 disk, perhaps, clear up my system by replacing damaged files?

ohgee.A repair install fixes any issues with XP...reloading SP2 MIGHT not do the trick if the issue is not related to an SP2 component.
After the repair install it's possible you might have to re-install SP2 but that doesn't take long.

Why not go ahead and create your slipstreamed CD and run the repair from that to be safe ? ?

If you need a good guide for slipstreaming let us know...Hi Patio,

You won't believe this.  I tried your suggestion on first making a slipstreamed disk.  I used Autostreamer for this.  When it came to burning the .iso file (using Nero 5.0) I got the error message that the file is too big for the CD-RW disk.  Sure enough, the .iso file is 755.438 MB.  Could this large file be the result of using my corrupted computer to make the slipstreamed file?  What's your take on this?

It looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and do your suggested Repare install using the separate disks.  I certainly would like to know what caused my beautiful (7) y.o. computer to go bananas.  I suppose I'll soon have to build another computer to get the latest bells and whistles.

Your response to the above will certainly be appreciated.............. ohgee. If you got 7 years on an original installation of Windows you got lucky!

Solve : slowness in my broadband speed?

Answer»

Hi,

Lately, i have been experiencing a delay or slowness in my broadband speed connection. I did a speedtest on the internet and the result only showed 65 kbps. I don't know what's wrong with it. My broadband speed is set for 1.5 Mbps. I was wondering if i could get some help here. Is it to do with my ISP end or is it my computer? Initially i thought it's my computer because it's got some VIRUSES or spywares lately but i have checked with my other computers and i still feel like it's the same speed i.e. SLOWER than last time. This happens since last month. I suspect that it might be due to viruses or spywares on the PC. but i have run the AV scan on it as well as the anti spyware. I have tried the scan in the safe mode and they detected nothing.

What ELSE could it be?

Thank you in advanceThere aren't any baddies out in the wild that will affect a modem's speed that i know of.
So the problem lies with your ISP or the quality of the phone lines or the modem itself...

After sorting out THINGS with your provider stop back and we'll review your protection package.

Solve : Windows XP re-installation?

Answer»

I recently tried to download AT&T's security software, however midway through the download, it appeared to have halted. So I CLICKED on cancel to cancel the download, but then computer went in to a circilar motion of shutting down and restarting with a msg that some file was called unexpectedly. Switching it to SAFE mode did not help. I got a Windows XP (I did not have the XP that came with the computer) and reinstalled it. However, the NEW installation is on a different folder, and none of the programs on the hard drive is available. No browser, no my computer, no FOLDERS on the desktop at all. Can anyone help as to how to get my computer functioning again? Thanks in advance.Re-boot into safe mode...then CHECK add/remove programs for an AT&T listing and remove it.

As to the buggered XP install i would just remove it and then if you have to run a repair install of XP

Repair Install of XPOr a full format and reinstall. That sounds even better.

on every window except yahoo messenger. Also, when getting on the internet the window does not fit correctly on my screen. This happens regardless of which browser I use.
Are you just saying that you have to do some vertical and/or horizontal scrolling when you view web pages?  If you open other windows (Explorer, WordPad, etc.), do they "fit" correctly or do they do the same thing as your browser window?

You do understand your Minimize, Maximize, and Restore buttons, right?  And, you understand you can, or should be able to, change the size of windows when neither maximized and not minimized, i.e. in between, or the Restore mode? Quote from: soybean on April 30, 2007, 01:35:54 PM
