Solve : Trouble connecting to network after reformatting?

Answer»

I just reformatted my other computer running Windows XP, and now Im having trouble getting an internet connection (or any NETWORK connection really) up. I still have all my install disks, but I lack a manual and the Help stuff on my computer hasn't really helped. Before I waste my time calling tech SUPPORT (has, in 3 years, yet to succeed in helping me with anything) I was wondering if anyone could walk a computer newb through setting up a network connection after a fresh reformat?Your ISP, your type of connection,  and all of the hardware involved WOULD be some important information to have.Comcast, cable, and im behind a router on a Dell.If you are wired to the router, you can just use connection wizard.

http://www.lse.ac.uk/itservices/remote/connecting/network/wizard.htm

If you are not, then we will need more details. Did you re-install your MBoard drivers which would include drivers for the NIC ? ?ask ur ISP to come over and solve the issue

Solve : Hard Drive not being recognized??

Answer»

I can't get my XP install to complete.  As the software is downloaded and it gets to the point that it need's to start up, I get the message that Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer yet in the BIOS I see it at the boot menu.  HELP!!!!!!Im not sure why you added a poll, but:
Does the drive make and sounds when the computer is powered on?

Turn your computer off, disconnect the hard drive (IDE and power) and plug it back in [carefully] and check the connections [to the motherboard and hard drive]interesting y you put the poll

when did this start?? what hard/software upgrades/changes have you made before this happened??  what kind of hhd and mobo?? connections are you using??DLoad and run the HDD manuf. diagnostics on that drive to see if it is healthy...

This runs from a bootable CD so Windows is not neccessary.

Are you sure you have it jumpered correctly ? ?

ALSO if it is a brand new drive it MUST be formatted before Windows will recognise it. Quote from: Zylstra on April 25, 2007, 09:04:14 PM

Sorry about the poll THING, I wasn't sure how I COULD post until after I read a BIT more.  The hardrive doesn't make much noice at all considering the case I hve has 9 fans and that's all you hear.  I did try another hardrive with an operating system already on it and it did the same thing.

Solve : Error messages when opening files?

Answer»

I have searched all over for info to help me, but can't find anything, so I am open to any advice!  I have a ton of jpeg files on my EHD.  I have no problem opening them on my desktop (about 1.5 years old), but can only open random ones on my laptop.  Often when I try to open some of the files the screen freezes.  Sometimes part of the folder (containing anywhere from 1 to 200 jpgs) opens, sometimes all, but more then not they freeze up.  These are all files to use with Adobe PHOTOSHOP 7.  All of these files/folders open without problems on my desktop.  I usually get the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem..." message but sometimes I get a Dr. Watson error. I have disabled scripting and all Windows updates are current.  Here is the other info I can offer on my laptop:
HP Pavilion zv6000
Windows XP home edition
Internet explorer 6
AMD Athlon 64 Processor
1.25 GB RAM
497 MHz

I'm not great with all the computer specifics, so please let me know if more info is NEEDED!  I really NEED help with this and hope someone out there can help!
THANKS!can you give the whole dr. watson error plz do they work on any other machines other than your desktop?? have you tried putting the trouble ones onto a cd or flash drive and then trying to open them?I personally haven't tried the files on other machines, but have friends who have with no problems.

I just tried opening the files trying to get the Dr. Watson Postmortem debugger message, but never got it, just a freeze in the machine.

I have the same problem when I try to open them from a flash drive on this computer.

P.S. The fan on my computer seems to be running constantly...is that normal?

THANKS!depends... ummm try uninstalling the problem program and reinstalling itI was having trouble for a bit, uninstalled Photoshop, no problems then for bit (like 1-2 weeks) and  now problems again...

Solve : table problems?

Answer»

Word PROBLEM

In Word if I TRY to format a cell in a table we have, the style I apply applies itself to the whole document. If I click undo, it goes back but then does the style change to the cell i selected in the FIRST place.

How can I stop word changing the whole document and me having to click undo after EVERY change I make?

HELP!

Thanks
TracyExactly, how are you selecting the cell or content of a cell that you want to format?  Hi, Welcome to CH!

After changing the whole table styles,Later u can change the style of  specifice cell by editing them in which u want different style.

Quote from: soybean on April 20, 2007, 08:13:19 AM

Exactly, how are you selecting the cell or content of a cell that you want to format?

I am just highlighting the text in the cell and changing it to bold, larger text. I am not changing the cell itself, just the fonts.
But the whole document takes on the changes, not the text I highlighted. And it only does it inside a table.
The docs are merged from a database. Could this be the problem? Quote from: tracywitham on April 30, 2007, 10:13:56 AM
The docs are merged from a database. Could this be the problem?
You may be on the right track there. Try opening a new document and creating a table and ADDING text outside of the table and then changing font within the table cell(s).  Does it behave the same or not?

Solve : What should I have?

Answer»

I have just fitted a new hard drive and want to KEEP my computer running as it should.  At the moment I have AGV antivirus,AGV anti spyware and Windows Firewall.  Is there anything else that I should have?
glenaftonI'd add a hardware firewall, most routers come with one. Some ISP modems have one built-in.

I have no idea how AVG anti-spyware functions, but if it's as good as the virus scanner, you'll be fine. If you have doubts, I'd recommend Windows Defender.

And you need Mozilla Firefox (+ Noscript plugin/manual cookie control) and Mozilla Thunderbird if you want a reliable/safe browsing and RUGGED E-mail client.

Oh YEAH, don't use any P2P programs but BITTORRENT if you play on downloading stuff.

You should be fine. Read through the security FAQ sections, they should give you an idea.

Solve : auto restart problem?

Answer»

hi. my computer is a windows xp pro with SP2. When i turn on my computer it does a DISK scan for C: drive. After its finished my computer restarts automatically and the process starts over again. When i skip the disk check it loads to the Welcome sign and it just freezes. And what happened prior to this problem?

SEE my signature. sorry  my uncle gave me the  computer and said it had no problems. when i plugged  it in and turned it on it gets to the desktop and there was a rundll32.dll error and seconds later it restarted automatically. So i ran the computer in safe mode and scheduled a disk scan for C: driveSince there is no personal DATA on the PC yet, you may want to consider reinstalling Windows XP to START with a fresh installation and not having to deal with all the problems your uncle left you?

ASSUMING you have a Windows XP installation CD and working serial.

Solve : windows media player playback problems?

Answer»

Sometimes when I'm watching a video with windows media, whether with the actual player open, a video on the internet, or even in windows movie maker, the movie will play and sometimes just stop on one FRAME but the sound still plays. it happens sometimes randomly but mostly when i try to skip around to a certain part in a video.

i just recently did a clean install of windows xp home edition. can someone help me here? After you did the clean install of windows, did you install the appropriate driver for you video card or onboard video?  Does Device Manager show any problems, any yellow triangles?  Run dxdiag (Start, Run, and TYPE dxdiag in the box), and run the tests for Display and Sound.  What were the results?i ran it and everything matched. i have an ati radeon 9800 pro and it says everything is functioning correctly, also the sound is running correctly. i tried updating to windows media 11 but it still doesnt work. Were you running Win XP on this machine before the recent clean install of windows xp home edition?  If not, what OS?  Could you play video without problems then?  What are your hardware specs, other than video?  Is that ati radeon 9800 pro onboard or an add-on card?  yes i was running xp before and played with no problems. the ati radeon is an agp add on. i have an amd athlon xp 3200 processor (2.2 ghz) and 1 gb of ramWould this have anything to do with your internet connection speeds ? ? Quote from: patio on April 28, 2007, 11:04:20 AM

Would this have anything to do with your internet connection speeds ? ?
Yeah, I was just going to ask for clarification on whether this only happens with streaming media from the Internet or whether it also happens if playing from CD/DVD.

Also wondering, onecrazyfist, why you recently did a clean install of windows.  What problems were you having that lead you to that?no its not just on the internet even watching downloaded avi files it does it. and i did a clean REINSTALL because of bad drivers from my processor.Which drivers...for which processor ? ?amdk7 drivers. but the problem is fixed. everything works FINE except for that.Have you re-installed WMP ? ?yesDLoad and install VLC media player (FREE ) and see if the condition persists...this will determine if WMP is the culprit or we should be looking at a hardware issue.

Anybody GOT a CLUE why?Diagnose HDD and RAM health. Is this a shiny CD that says Microsoft all over it ? ?

If so try Raptor's suggestions and CLEAN off the CD with a soft lint-free cloth.Yeah its a real copy of windows the disks fine i installed another system the other day. I'm pretty sure the hdd is fine i had it running on a different computer and i formatted it to see if that could be a problem but not change. how can i test the memory as i don't have another compatible system for that ram, the computer detects it fine on start up and in the bios.MemTest...free dload. Solve : XP Startup Help?

Answer»

Hey Guys new here. Looks like a great site. Sorry if this has been asked/answered before, but I did search.

I am running XP Pro SP2. I turn the comp on, all is fine, it loads the desktop and taskbar (with only the time in the sys tray). The desktop is frozen with no icons working. I drag the mouse into the taskbar and it goes to just a loading sign.

I have worked out a way to fix this by hitting Ctrl Alt Del and clicking the Processes tab, finding "explorer.exe" in the list and ending that process. I then click File, New, and start explorer again.

The comp then runs normal, but some programs will only work once after installation. For eg. I install Nero, open it, burn stuff, close it, next time i go to open Nero it doesn't work (Send error report/Don't send).

Help anyone?

Let me know if you need more info.

Cheers,

Kenny

Do you have an antivirus that is up to date? Have you had any virus's in the past on this system that may have affected the registry? I suggest printing it out before you get started and reading thru it to get familiar with the process...

If done properly it should retain your programs and data but backup what is critical just in case...I failed to mention that i've formatted my drive 100000 times now and re-installed windows. Still does it.

All my data is on a seperate hard drive so its pretty simple not having to back up and all.So you have REINSTALLED the OS? Do you have a genuine Windows XP CD?

Do you give this advice to everyone?

Anyway, kenny87, you could System Restore to before you installed SP2, and then install it again. But only do this if you can't find any other solution. There is a likey chance it being a corruption within the components of explorer.exe from what i can tell. I sorted out something similar last week for someone. However they were getting an error message and the task bar and icons were not appearing. That was an explorer issue which in this case was http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914222

I would start looking at expanding the files off the original CD at the COMMAND prompt in safemode and replacing the ones you have to be certain if it is or is not explorer related especially if you are stopping the explorer service...which should drop the desktop anyway. Why do you ask ? ?Because the last 3 topics when I saw you in them, you wrote that advice (excpet without the Service Pack CD).

OK i'll take a back seat on this one... i look forward to seeing you solve his dilemna.Yeh i'm with ya's. What do I do I think there are some malware or virus in your system, you may run some anti-virus software to scan your system. E.g Kaspersky.

Solve : Desktop randomly freezes?

Answer»

Hi guys, about yestuday my desktop just froze. (i was still able to move my cursor) however my icons cant be clicked on.. nothing was working. totally frozen besides my cursor.. I would restarted my comp and after broswing the net about 30mins it would freeze again (and again i could only move my cursor around).

I thought it might be because my comp is DUSTY and i vaccuumed it but, it still has the problem.
Im using windows xp PRO
1gig ram
amd 3400+

Maybe i need to format my comp... i dont know, would appreciate any suggestions and advice thanks !!

You vacuumed it?  Not a good move.  Never vacuum your computer.  It could cause static electricity that can fry your components.  When you want to clean out your computer, use a can of compressed air.  You can maybe get away with using one of those little keyboard vacuums, but even then, you'd have to be careful.

As for your problem...
What protection programs do you have?
Have you made any recent changes prior to this problem?
Have you tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier point?1.Well.. i used AVG anti-virus
2. and i dont REMEMBER making any changes... because i was capped which means i couldnt download anything. however i remember having an AVG update
3. Im not sure how to do a system restore.. is it possible to restore back to yesturday or the day before?

thank you for your reply CDMattIf you want to try system restore, follow these instructions:

1. Go to Control Panel (catagory view)
2. Click on Performance and Maintenance
3. At the left side under 'See Also' click on System Restore
When you're in the System Restore Menu
1. Make sure the 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' circle is ticked and click Next
2. In the small calender, click on a date like 2 days before today and click Next
3. Make sure all programs are closed and click Next again.
The computer will take slightly longer to boot but you won't loose anything like recently saved work but recently installed programs might be uninstalled.

Note to everyone else, this is from a post I posted some time ago if it seems familiarTo use System Restore, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.  Try restoring to a couple of days ago and see what happens.  Keep in mind that even if this works, it may only be a temporary fix.  But perhaps it could buy you enough time to try some things out.

Also, I should've asked...have you tried starting your computer in Safe Mode?  When the computer is starting, keep pressing F8 until you get a menu where you can select to boot in Safe Mode.  Does the problem still persist?  If not, try running a virus scan while still in Safe Mode.Using a normal home vacuum cleaner in a PC case is a very bad idea! The powerful suction can do all knds of harm. In particular, the fans on the CPU heatsink, display card and in the PSU may be very much overspeeded, causing the motor and / or bearings to be damaged or even destroyed. So check these and also watch your temperatures. Also, RAM chips and cards can be dislodged enough to cause intermittent connection problems.

The 30 minutes sure sounds like a heat related thing...

This is weird because, ive experienced my comp overheating before and all it does is restarts itself. however this problem is different.

i vaccuumed the tower after this problem started to occur so yeh... It was fustrating because when i get into something for example chatting on msn, surfing, watching something with windows media PLAYER it would STOP and the window would show like a 'Not Responding' screen you get what i mean, and my cursor will have the 'loading icon' when i put it over the window. other then that when i move the cursor to 'my computer' icons etc its normal but i cant click on nothing!i have YET to try the safemode method but i will if the system restore dosent help Ok, try restore first, then post back and tell us what happened.Ok i restored it back a full day before the problem occured and the problem still exists.

BUT i have tried safemode and to my surprise... its not freezing.. hmmm maybe a program or something causing this problem?. Btw i also realised that at the beginning to startup attitray.exe(something like that, related to my gfx card) would be 90-100% CPU usage which i Ctrl+alt+delete and end task the *censored* thing.. maybe something to do with my gfx card driver/programs mmm -shrugs-I once read that 90% of system freezes/crashes turn out to graphics card related.  I have Radeon 9100 and I never run ATItray because of the high cpu usage. You don't need it.
well i have an 9800XT raedon

what do i do with the atitray thing.. uninstall it? or untick it from msconfig?I would try booting to safemode and uninstalling the vid card. Physically remove it after powering down and do a few cold boots.
Then replace the card re-boot and re-install the drivers.

Hope you learned the vaccuum thing even if it was the hard way... Quote from: dream on April 28, 2007, 09:13:30 AM

untick it from msconfig. You can always run it later if you need to by right clickng on the desktop & choosing properties.
ok this sucks because i uninstalled my gfx card drivers and everything. and reinstall.

Solve : Some Programs Not Staying Installed?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP SP2. I've been having some odd problems with a COUPLE of programs. They won't stay installed. It's only been happening with FontHit Font Tools and Lavasoft Adaware.
When I CLICK on the shortcut in the Start menu or the Objectdock icon, it tells me that the program NEEDS to REINSTALL again. Both are installed to the program files folder on my main drive.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both, but they keep doing it.
Any IDEAS?

ObjectDock may very well be the culprit here...that's a Window Blinds product isn't it ? ?

Solve : Java Installation Issues?

Answer»

Well, I'm trying to install an update to java and I get a couple of errors. Im downloading from java.com and the installation won't work. These are what pop up:

"This installation package could not be opened. VERIFY that the package exists and you can access it, or CONTACT the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

"The installation of package http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jre-6u1-windows-i586-jc.xpi failed with -203"

My COMPUTER is Windows XP, and I have no idea what is wrong, please help.I believe you need to go to Java(TM) SE Runtime ENVIRONMENT 6 Update 1 and download Windows Platform - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1.  You should also un-install the previous version first.

Solve : Previously searched/typed items stay listed at bottom?

Answer»

Let's say I'm at google or something, or any search engine... Well, any place I can search for something and I type in A, anything I've ever searched starting with A shows up. of course, same for every letter of the ALPHABET. Or say I'm on MySpace or something and I'm typing something, something I've previously typed comes up as a suggestion for what I might type. I don't know, hard to explain. But deleting history doesn't work.

HELP, I'm computer retarded. To clean a lot of history-type stuff out of your system, I suggest downloading, installing, and running CCleaner.  I also suggest you choose not to install Yahoo toolbar which comes with CCleaner.  You'll have the option to unselect it soon after the CCleaner installation STARTS. I appreciate the help, manI apoligize for the double post but, I ran the program and nothing seemed to change.Make sure you have Autocomplete Form History checked before you run the cleaner.matt ftw
thanksWhen you ran CCleaner, you did first Analyze, and then you clicked on Run Cleaner, right?  Analyze identifies stuff to be REMOVED; Run Cleaner actually removes it.If you would like to completely disable the Auto complete Form History, click
Tools > Internet Options

Then click the "CONTENT" tab at the top of that window
Then click "Settings" next to "Auto Complete"
and from there, its self explanatory. (Just remember to click "Apply" or "OK' then you are done)

Solve : Graphic cards?

Answer»

I am using ATI Radeon 9550V+ and after I insert the GRAPHIC Card the screen got a little out of colour. Please help me!Read the MANUAL that came with the VIDEOCARD, but I'll save you the hard work of opening all the little booklets that probably came with it.

You're going to need videocard drivers, obtain them at ATI its website I  am using a Window Xp and a pentium four processer. But after following on what you say,my computer still went out of colour.I remember a cheesy old movie where Count Alucard turned out to be Dracula. What a surprise.

Please post the link where you got the drivers.

Some info about your other hardware could be important. You also could have gotten a bad card or this could be a pepcak.pepcak?  I believe GX1_MAN made a typo error.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PEBKAC  or PEBCAK Yes, I know what that means. I thought he made up something himself.  OK I will give you more details it is a Pentium 4 Cpu 1.80GHz and has 224MB of ram.The original manufacture of the graphic cards is SIS.Hope this will help if not, tell me in more details.
Run Everest, make a report and post it here. You may WANT to print out a report for yourself as it will tell EVERYTHING about the hardware you would ever need.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

(Raptor, yes, that was meant to be pebcak. My coffee had not been absorbed this morning at that time.)It's probably not the lack of coffee, but the coffee it SELF.. Junk food. Can anybody teach me how to use Everest to check my graphic cards Please Install the program and let it create a report...save it as a txt file and post the results here.

It may take more than one post.

Solve : RAM related?

i'm using windows xp with service pack2 and 256 ram. but sometimes appear an error memory too low...yes xp needs more than what is mini requirement.

http://www.crucial.com/

scan your computer here and it will tell you everything you need to know about what kind of ram and HOWM uch you can put in your computerCould also be a shortage of hard drive space, what is the capacity of your hard drive(s)?xp requires at least 15% free space Quote from: unlovedwarrior on April 26, 2007, 07:29:26 PM

xp requires at least 15% free space
It can run with less than that, but System Restore will not function.

ummm stillWell, a relative of mine is running XP with a 40GB HD with only (approx) 3GB free space...

Although to be fair, I've not seen a message on XP saying memory was too low before. Had it back in the day when using Windows95  It's probably asking for more virtual memory. How much do you have at the moment?

RMB My Computer -> Properties -> ADVANCED tab -> Performance section -> Settings -> Advanced tab

If you changed this to a custom number, I suggest changing it back to letting Windows handle it.. And you're going to need more disk space than 3GB in the future, that's too crowded. Dear
Try using and other ram bank for eg if ram is in ist bank replace this ram to second bank and then restart and also check from bios that memory reserved or memoy hole is off or on if on off it i also have PROBLEM like this but this cure is 80% and HDD size for xp Swap file is also true atleast without any other software INSTALLED 1 Gb should be free space and should be increased if other softwares are installed or lastly if your VGA is integrated then it will share ram of the system

Solve : a good install/boot head-scratcher w/ linux flavor?

Answer»

So, here's the background:  I have an old dell laptop that previously had win98 installed on it.  I got the crazy idea to try and install madriva free linux on it - well, the laptop's a bit too out of date to successfully run this os (for various reasons), but managed to install the lilo madriva boot menu.  Now I'd just be happy to GET win98 BACK on it.   I tried running the win98 recovery cd - it seemed to work (deleted old partions, installed new ones, etc), but when I try and boot the laptop back up, I still get the linux lilo boot menu, which gives me 2 linux options and 2 windows options.  Neither windows option will boot ("Error: 0x06").  I know I can remove lilo via msdos, but w/o windows I'm not sure how to do this (or if this is even a solution).  So what do I need to do to get win98 back on via the 'recovery' cd?

additional info:  When I remove the hard drive, put it in a usb external drive, and hook it up to my new laptop, there appears to only be a fat32 partion (no linux partition).  I've tried deleting all partitions myself and re-running the recovery cd, but no luck.  One strange bit:  if I try to boot the old laptop's hd via external usb hooked up to the new laptop, one windows boot option now runs some kind of dell diagnostic program, and if I choose the other windows boot option, it actually boots the winXP that is installed on my new laptop's internal hd (same for if I choose linux - it runs my linux that's installed on my duel boot new laptop).

ANY suggestions/insights appreciated   THANKS!

-Jeannette    you need to remove the boot loader for linuxIf you can get it to boot from the Windows CD, then get to the prompt and type in

fdisk /mbr      (note the space) and press Enter

You're fixed.i had to do that with grub error 22 a COUPLE nights AGO

recovery console

fix mbr and then fixbootThat's XP, this is Win98. It's a different animal.i know thats why i didnt tell them to do thatThanks so much guys - I didn't acutally have the win98 cd, just this "dell operating system recovery" cd - of course win98 was lurking in it.  When the automatic promt for the recovery came up I just clicked decline and voila! it defaulted me to a dos promt and I was able to run fdisk.
Thanks again!   Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back with your success.

Solve : Password recovery for Win98??

Answer»

Hello,I am new to these forums and I have a problem.

One day I was LOOKING for a used computer at a pawnshop.I asked if I could
buy it and they said I could but I wouldnt be able to access an already-made
account w/o a password, what should I do?I want to get it,I cant get anything more expensive than that, and I dont want to TAKE a dive at something that is unfixable. There's no such thing as an unaccessible account in Windows 98 because Windows 98 lacks any TYPE of decent security. What kind of PC is it and how much are they charging? the price was around 94$I didnt get what MODEL it was. From the look it seemed like a gateway. This is all from memory and not what I saw that day.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=password+recovery+for+windows+98&btnG=Search

google is your friend dont leave him hanging you didnt get any specs on it Quote from: CompBoy09 on April 27, 2007, 08:54:30 AM

94 dollar sounds like a lot of money for a metal case with 'gateway' written on it.

Solve : flash drive/sandisk?

Answer»

Hi i was directed to your forum from usbman.
i have never used a flash drive before.i have
win98 operating system.the computer is an hp
16 gig hd,256mb ram.the flash drive only shows
one part of a file on computer.it shows all files on two different
computers.i THOUGHT it was a usb problem, that is why i asked question to usbman.
they told me it is a windows problem, they said
to post on your forum.is this an operating system
problem,if so what does it need.
Thanks for any help,Edward Since you are new, i'll explain a bit. Windows 98 is an 'old' version of Microsoft Windows. Memory sticks/flash drives can work on Windows 98 with a driver that you have to install, and the driver makes the flash drive run on your computer.
TRY reinstalling the drivers for the flash drive, that might work.
It will also be helpful if you tell us information about the flash drive. What brand it is, what model, what company, how old it is, ect...Thanks for the fast reply!
The flash drive is sandisk.
it is a year old,and a 256mb.
where do i find driver for it?
do i get it from sandisk?
EdwardI took a look on Sandisk.com, found a link to a page, supposedly with a Win 98SE driver (not Win 98) but when I clicked on the link, the page that displayed said, "We’re sorry, but there is no Sandisk.com Web page that matches your entry. It is possible you typed the address incorrectly, or the page may no longer exist."  The URL for this page was http://www.sandisk.com/retail/drivers-sdcz1.asp.  This is not looking good.the san disk is 80-36-00478.
but it says windows 2000/xp.
the computer was mine,i gave it
to a family member who is using it.
i'm trying to help her out.this is her first
computer.i never used the flash drive
before.is there supposed to be a driver
disk that comes with the flash drive?
Thanks,EdwardI've never seen flash drives come with a driver disk.  With my PNY flash drives, the retail package said Win 98SE drivers could be obtained from their website.  If the manufacturer does not have a driver on their website, you're probably just not going to be able to use that flash drive with the older OS.You could also try to use the PNY driver and see if the drive is recognised...clear all the data off of it first except for a simple .txt file created in Notepad.
The drivers will either work and you will be able to open the file or they won't.

It's worth a try as the drivers even if incorrect will not harm the fflash disk.I used these when I had Windows 98, and they worked. They're generic USB Mass STORAGE drivers.
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php
I've also recommended this to a few other people and they haven't had problems with it.
Hope you can solve your problem!

That generic USB is for Win 98SE, per that web page.  But, what does he have to lose by trying it.The help from this forum is GREAT!
Thanks to all,EdwardJust one more question.will i need microsoft word or another program
to write to the flash drive?i do not have word on the computer.as i mentioned earlier this is all new to me.
Thanks for you patience,EdwardYou don't really need any program to write to the flash drive.
Actually, 'writing' on it basically means 'putting stuff on the drive'
To put stuff on the usb, you just open My Comptuter, click and open your flash drive and drag or copy and paste anything into it. Folders, text files, pictures, more or less anything can be put on a flash drive.Notepad will work just fine. Thanks for your patience, and the help.
EdwardStill have not had any LUCK with installing flash driver.its not showing
in my computer.what i found is the wal-mart 256mgb,driver at sandisk.
it is a ZIP file.so i used my new slimline hp and burned the driver on cd-r.
i also burned zip central on cd-r.when the zip cd is in it does not show anything.
like setup exe.i go to my computer and it shows the cd,but when i try to open
it shows nothing.would it be better to download on the computer that the flash  drive is being used on and install that way?please let me know.
Thank you,Edward
ps the operating system is 4.10-2222a which bis win98se i think.

What operating system are you using ?

What bug (malware) protection do you have installed on that machine?

Please let us know.

dl65

is the box the only THING that comes up? does windows load or is the rest of the screen blank if so your resolution is probably to high or your monitor has died on you do you have a diffrent (possibly newer better) monitor to TRY out on this pc?thats a message from XP telling you that the display settings are not set the best for the type of monitor you are using.

I would change the display...control pannel...display....

you MAY need to try a few of them to see which one works for you

julia3435 ..... Is this the same issue you posted about almost a month ago?

What screen resolution do you have the screen set at now ?

Solve : Odd Problems?

Answer»

I have been having problems on this computer. Last Saturday Internet Explorer and Outlook Express disappeared from my computer. I was working on a non internet programme and wanted to check for an expected email but Outlook Express and Explorer had gone. I checked for a VIRUS with AVG Free an for Ad Aware but found nothing. I tried to go into safe mode using the F8 button but I could not even get that. I then tried using the installation disc to try and access safe mode but the disc started installing without any prompts. That gave me back the Outlook Express and Explorer but the computer does odd things still. I downloaded a trial version of Stopsign and that found that the computer was infected with Win 32 HLLM.Stration.Agent software package and Webtrends Live. Will these cause me problems and if so how do I get rid of them?

glenaftonCorrection   tomylast    post.           The   typing    is allover    the    place   again.Power down and try a PS2 keyboard in that machine.

If that does no good re-boot and go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it...let it run to completion and re-boot.

Does this improve things ? ?Patio,
I tried as you suggested.   Run will not accept the command.  I get the message: Windows cannot find sfc/scannow.  Make sure you have the correct name and try again

I made  a new computer  - first problem (no video no beep) solved by changing the power SUPPLY.  I brought it home and proceeded to load Windows XP Pro  using the 6 start-up disks required before the Windows CD can be installed.

The problem is - every time it gets to start-up disk 6 windows a blue screen says it has encountered a problem and needs  to close.   So I can't load Windows

When I substitute the Windows 98 CD for the start up disks as a work-around it says "no bootable device".

I also tried my start-up disks for XP Home and got the same response - freeze on disk #6.  XP Home has service pack 2 so that should be bootable   but it is not.

I have an Intel motherboard.  Any suggestions about how I can get Windows LOADED?

SandyHave you changed the boot sequence to look at the CD/DVD drive before the floppy or hard drive? you should be able to boot from the drive to install XP form the CD.im just confused on the multiple cds... i dont remember 2000 having more than one cd but thats meThis a classic example of trying to install XP with an "ahem" version... lolIt is? My copied versions of Windows run just FINE.. RAPTOR how could you do such a thing!! LOL

Solve : "SVCHost... memory could not be written" on shut down?

Answer»

I would like to apologize in advance for the lack of information that I am able to provide you with.

first off: windows xp sp 2.  norton internet security 2007.  any other system info you need? (i know I probably missed tons)

well the problem is that on occasion, when I shut down my compuer, everything will go normally, until windows goes to the blue screen when it says "windows is shutting down"  then I GET a message that says something to the extent of SVCHost...memory could not be written click OKAY to terminate the program"

Unfortunately, this message dissapears on its own and the computer shuts down to quickly for me to record the entire message, but I tried to pick out the "best" parts for you.

Also, the message does not appear every time I shut down, but only occasionaly, and I can't think of anything that might be causing it, I basically always run the same programs (firefox, solitaire, aim, norton,-pretty basic stuff, nothing to "unusual")

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW...

can you think of anything sort of... general but specific that could be causing this (your probably gonna' say that it could be anything, right?)

is there a way to "pause" the shut down so that I can copy down the full error message?

and lastly-
is it serious?  like, if i don't find a solution, could it be something eating away at my computer for years, untill one day...

or if i ignore it, will there be no real consequences, since the message dissapears on its own, even if I don't his okay. currently, it doesn't bother me.

once again, I apologize for the vagueness, but any help at all would be appreciated. Last shall be first - it could be serious, depends on the cause.

I think you should test your Ram with Memtest86 free from here...

Comments on various forums indicate the problem could be with software, specifically Java and anti-virus but no definite conclusion.

Yeh, I used google, and didn't find any real solid answers.  and I guess I should of mentioned that this only started happening since I installed Norton internet security 2007, coincidence?  I think not.  I checked their website, which in the past has had many solutions to problems related to their PRODUCTS, but this time... nothing.

I guess all I REALLY want to know is if its that serious, because, it doesn't bother me if I don't find a solution, as the message goes away on its own, and I have had no other problems.   I'm really just afraid that it might lead to something worse than this...

BTW- thanks dusty! Quote from: keybowvio02 on April 26, 2007, 06:09:20 PM

In that case I don't believe you have anything to worry about as the problem is 99% software related - I left out the other 1% in case I'm wrong again.

Just chalk up yet another negative point to Norton.... and think about changing to something else.

Cheers.I'd ditch Norton 2007 and get AVG Free if you suspect it of causing problems.

Solve : question on anti-spywares?

Answer»

Hi,

I don't know if there is such anti-spyware software PROGRAM as i described below.

What it would do is it would scan for any spywares as files or docs are being transfered from external SOURCE to hard disk on the computer. Because usually, the files are successfully transfered to hard disk and then use the anti-spyware program to scan it to find out if the file is safe to be open or executed.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance

Zone Alarm Security Suite scans files as soon they are transfered to the computer, Sophus Anti Virus also scans files like this..ALTHOUGH not automatic both AVG and AVAST which are free will scan external DEVICES as well...

Solve : Need help Please! Restart has 2 error msgs!?

Answer»

I have two error messages that show up on my computer whenever I'm starting up or restarting it.  Its a recent thing too.  Let me first say I downloaded some software for ATI called ATI Catalyst Control for my graphics card and .NET Framework Version 3.0 to run the Catalyst Control program with.  I'm not sure if its related to these error messages but one of them showed up after I installed both I think.

The first error message I've been getting in the DOS part when you first startup or reboot the computer.  Its in the blank black screen right before you see the windows picture logo and the "Windows is Starting Up" message appear.  It says:

Invalid Boot.INI
Loading C:\windows\

I have no idea what this invalid message means but can someone tell me how to fix it?

The second message appears when the windows screen finished loading up and I can see the desktop.  I SAVED the picture of the erro message below.

I think this could be related to that catalyst control stuff I installed or maybe some other ATI software I installed. (ATI is strange since the cd I bought the graphics card with was outdated and I had to goto their website and download and install the latest version driver and this extra features stuff called catalyst control).

But anyway how do you remove these error messages or prevent them from popping up?? Is my computer seriously damaged?  Should I be worried?  1ST. Did you have .net #1 and #2 installed already before you put .net#3 on the machine ? ?

2nd. Copy and paste your boot .ini here and we'll have a looksee...What version of Windows are you running? Well I do not know for sure if my computer already had version 1.0 and 2.0 .NET Framework installed already.  All I did was download and install 3.0 version so maybe I did or didn't have the first 2 I don't know how to check for it.

I can't paste the boot.ini since the black screen with thoses words during restart only lasts for 1 second before the Windows loading screen shows up and I have no idea how to freeze the screen with the message and copy it.

I have Windows XP.  Oh and one final thing I just found out recently:  I got that same error message I pasted before whenever I try to open up ATI Catalyst control!  I cannot use the ATI Catalyst Control for some reason.  Please help how do I fix the ATI Catalyst Control program?  Why is it not working after I spent all that time downloading it and the 3.0 .NET framework for it??  ThanksIt's possible the ATI program was not written for your card...i would un-install it and visit the site to make sure if your hardware is compatible.

Sometimes newer drivers/updates aren't always the best...

p.s. The boot.ini file will be found in the root directory of C:.....it can be opened with Notepad by right clicking and selecting Open With.
Then you can copy and paste it...Uh oh I think my booti.ini file is either damaged or MISSING.  I get this error message when I tried to make a backup copy by clicking on the Settings Button under Startup and Recovery:

The C:\boot.ini file can not be opened.  Operating System and Timeout Settings cannot be changed.

I cannot find my Windows XP first aid cd anywhere (I think I lost it years ago) so are there any other solutions?ok to get your boot.ini file try this:

1. go to start>Run and type msconfig
2. look at the tabs at the top for BOOT.INI, click this tab

Only problem with this is that you can't copy and paste but at least you can see it.

Also in msconfig you can check many other setting of your computer you may find something unusual that is causing it.

alternatively open msconfig as stated above and got o the startup tab and uncheck any boxes which look like they relate to your ATI control center. Then try to boot you computer and see what happens.

NOTE: you will get a popup saying 'system configuration has been changed' when you restart just tick the box and click OK.

hope i helpedOk I did that but I don't see the tab for BOOT.INI

I have Tabs called: General, System.INI, WIN.INI, Services, Startup but no BOOT.INI

Oh for an update I fixed the ATI Control Center problem all it took was an uninstall but I STILL have this BOOT.INI error message. If you only have a one harddrive on your computer, your boot.ini file should look like this:

Quote

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP PROFESSIONAL" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Solve : Computer deleted most stuff!?

When i turned my computer off last, i had pictures, videos, work, music etc on my computer. When i turned my computer off and back on this morning all that had gone. My desktop background had reset. The only thing that remains is the program files. Office is asking for the cd again. I have a HP laptop. If anyone has any idea what has gone on id appreciate it a lot. I dont want to get it back to what it was and find it happens again when i turn it off.

Thank you.Are you on the right user?
Anyways...we need more info on your computer.

What OS are you using?
Did you install anything the night before?
Did your computer act weird the last time? (like slower or something)
Is your hard disk memory at almost 100%?YEAH im the only one who USES the pc. The hard drive has gone back to using a 1/3 instead of 2/3.Sorry, i accidently hit post. Please answer those questions ...Windows xp.

When i turned off last it moved all my videos and music. So itunes couldnt find it.

I thought that was strange.

Then i turned off and this time its goneIs your hard disk at almost 100% free memory and did you install anything recently?
Also, what kind of protection do you have (anti spyware/anti virus)Its at 2/3 free memeory. No i havent installed anything recently that i think could do it. Im going reinstall to factory state. Its all gone anyway. That should fix the bug that has decided to delete all my work. My heart has sunk.Have you tried doing a search for these files?  Have you had iTunes search for all music on the computer?
Can you access them in Safe Mode?
Is there a chance you MAYBE logged into a different account? If you have the original disk, you might give a try at booting up with the disk and go to the SECOND repair option and let the disk repair the system. It will not harm any existing files. close to the end you'll have to enter your key, so WRITE it down before starting. Are you the only user of this machine ? ?

Solve : Explorer Crashes all the time?

Hey everyone.  I just did a Reinstall of Windows 98 on my very old laptop
Toshiba Tecra 720CDT.  I am having this PROBLEM where whenever I try to click the start menu or view the contents of a disk or just about anything else I get the error for EXPLORER saying it has performed an illegal operation.  Can anyone help me correct this problem? Is it an illegal copy of Windows?

You may want to start by checking the RAM and the hard drive for errors.

www.memtest86.com

The appropriate drive maker's site for a free download.

What happened requiring the reinstall? Did you format the drive prior to installation?I would love to try out your advice but when I click anything explorer crashes...the only way I can think of solving this is some way through dos...and yes its legal copyThese both creat bootable diskettes (or CD's if you are floppy-less). Windows is not required. If these don't run then you have bigger problems.I just ended up formatting the whole dang thing...nothing on the harddrive anyway.  This has taken care of the problem.  I just get this annoying MESSAGE before windows loads that says it cannot locate vnetbios.vxd   It says strike any key to continue so I do and windows loads.  Hmmmm well uninstalling dial up adapters SEEMED to solve this problem...very STRANGE indeed  If you need the dial up adapters, you might try going to the manufacturer website, and downloading them from there instead of using the Windows generic drivers

Solve : New pc problem?

Answer»

Hello, I have just built my first pc and everything works ok but when i try to make the pc do a few tasks (e.g downloading and listening to music) it crashes and sometimes gives me the blue screen of death with a big error message. I get the feeling it COULD be a memory problem  and i have just tried swaping the ram about and stuff with no luck    I read i should disable the BIOS memory but cant seem to find the option.

I am using Award software with BIOS version f2 and cant seem to find any help anywhere on the internet for it.

If anyone could help me out that would be great

"Disabling the BIOS memory"

It is no wonder you can't find that option.

Did you diagnose RAM/HDD?

Did you install security software? Hi Raptor, lol im quite new to all this but got to start somwhere eh.

No i dont think i did diagnose RAM/HDD is that what im meant to do? and im not sure if i did install security software i cant remember seeing it on the motherboard disk anywhere, but ill have another check. You won't find any on your motherboard disk.

Google, download and install:

AVG Free
Adaware SE
Windows Defender

And yes, you should diagnose RAM/HDD.

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287HI, thanks Raptor for those links but i couldnt understand what they was for, i have got my pc specs together to see if they might beable to help, so here they are:

System Information
Operating system: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (5.2, Build 3790)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Sseries GA-945GM-S2

Direct X Version: Direct 9.0c

Graphics Card
NVIDIA Ge Force 7300 GS

PSU
Thermaltake Purepower 680W

Hard Drive
160gb Seagate barracuda SATA 2

I think thats about it, if you need to know anything else then please let me know. I have a Thermaltake case with 3 case fans. Thanks AGAINI also wrote what the blue screen of death says, this is what i get:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent DAMAGE to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen apears again follow these steps :

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space, if a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for updates, try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any updates, disable BIOS memory options sush as caching or shadowing, if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup time, and then select safe mode

Then it gives a big technical information code, im not sure if it would be of any use, but that's all of it. I downloaded updates from Gigabyte and when i tryed to install them i got an error message that said cannot start or run due to incompatability with 64-bit versions of windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is availiable. So im not sure if its gigabyte that im meant to contact about that, so ill try and get a phone number and ill ring them tomorow. But im sure thats not the problem. Any thought are well apriciated. Thanks

It is an easy "virus". It's just a batch file that has

:loop
shutdown -l
goto :loop

that's all, not but a few KB so its nothing that will lag system preformance. It might have been an exe that you used to add it.I like your thinking!

However, it also happens in safe mode. And I think that not even batch files are executed when safe mode is loaded as no programs in the start-up folder are loaded.

Solve : ScreenSaver properties (or lack thereof)?

Answer»

I'm using the company laptop at work with Windows XP and I have admin rights.
About 4 months back, the company decided to take away from users their ability to
change the screensaver and whilst they did that, they also set it for a non-changeable 10 minutes.

Now, the IT boys didn't use the usual registry key of "NoDispScrPage" which removes the ScreenSaver tab from the Display Properties window.
What they did was to RENDER un-useable (it's ghosted out) all the ScreenSaver property settings that you can normally change from within the Display properties.

I don't know how they did this, but it looks like maybe a complete network install of a very cutdown version of the ScreenSaver settings?

Changing the Group Policies via gpedit.msc has NO effect either.

I would dearly love to be able to change the default 10 minutes before ScreenSaver activates to a more respectable 20 mins.
Changing the registry key "ScreenSaveTimeout" to 1200 does nothing either.

Are there any experts out there who might know how the ScreenSaver properties may be made available again???if they dont want you to mess with it there must be a reason or something?? Are they 'local' admin rights to or 'network' admin rights?  Two different stories.

Alan <><  most likely local Quote from: ale52 on April 20, 2007, 09:59:52 AM

They have a standard screensaver that they want all users to have and that's fine.
They also want (and have set) the screensaver timeout to 10 mins, which is NOT fine for me.
To give an EXAMPLE, I often run PowerPoint presentations at meetings and there's nothing worse when the
screensaver interupts the presentation 10 mins into it, and because the screensaver is password protected,
which once again is fine, pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL each time the screensaver cuts in to ENABLE the entering of password
is a total pain.   Ask the Admin to turn yours off...I think asking the administrators nicely and explaining your POINT will get across better than hacking their settings, that'll just make 'm enforce the rules with more force.. Quote from: RAPTOR on April 21, 2007, 12:15:24 PM

This is true and I'll probably resort to this (even tho these IT guys don't know the meaning of being reasonable).
It was more a case of satisfying my curiousity as to how this was achieved.

Depends on which AVG product you have...AVG Free which is their virus program can be scheduled to both update and run at a set time each day.
AVG Anti-spyware also has this feature as well but the feature times out after 30 days so you have to run manual scans...the product other than that remains fully functional.

Which one did you install ??I installed the AVG anti-virus free edition. It still freezes after 2min 05 seconds and 1510 OBJECT w/no threats. Should I re-install, use another anti-virus or leave it alone? It may not be freezing...i know it looks this way when it is scanning the registry or other large directories...

Run it late at nite when you don't need the machine and let it finish.

I would also run chkdsk on that HDD just to be sure it's not a problem with the HDD.Patio, On my latest scan I ran it and left and I did have 145,000 objects scanned with 81 threats. 66 were deleated, 8 were moved to vault. So you are right it did not freeze, I just got impatient.
What is meant by" chkdsk on this HDD"?Right click on the C: drive in My Computer and select pproperties.
On the first page you will SEE DISK Cleanup...run that.
Then select Tools and run disk checking.

Solve : cpu usage 99-100%?

Answer»

Looking at the task manager, my cpu usage is 99-100% for the "system" task (not system idle).  I have already checked all the processes showing & they are all legit.  I booted in Safe mode & the cpu was correct with must being used by system idle, but WHENEVER I reboot normally it returns to 99-100% cpu usage on "system".

This is slowing everything waaay down.  Is there a way to see what of "system" is doing this?  So that I may remove it -- thanks

RoderickIt could be a program that is set to run on startup. Did you install anything on your computer recenly? and how long have you had this problem?Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software / run msconfig yet?

Alan <><  ok is your computer malware free?? if not that could be the problem. what protects do you have on your machine? what are the specs of the machine OS etc. when did you notice this prblem

have you tried editing your start up to remove prcesses you dont need? i think you need the system idle on..

start run in the run bar put msconfig press ok click the start up tab and remove any startup program that you dont need like QUICK time itunes msn messenger etc

unlovedwarriorThanks all -- sorry I posted that late last night & am at work today -- I have been running AVG anti-virus, AVG spyblock, Spybot, & Zonealarm as my firewall.

I have not downloaded anything new that I am aware of & the scans have not shown any malware.  Nothing odd in the start up, only AVG & Zonealarm are set to start on startup.  I tried DISABLING both those programs just to see if it could be either of them, but it is still 99-100% usage for system.

Yes, it used to work correctly but unfortunately I don't have a prior restore point.  I am running now in safe mode (with zonealarm on /avg doesn't work in safemode) & most idle system.

Isn't there a way to run a mode where it shows EVERY program that wants to load at startup?  Thanks again
Roderickmsconfig and selective mode try thatYou should find out which process is using the memory.
Go to your task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and hit the processes tab. This lists all the processes and their usage in relation to the CPU. find the ones that are using the most.
When idling the usage will be listed under "System Idle Process". This should be the only process listed with a value when the system is idling.

Encountered this problem once with WGATray.exe error caused from windows updates. Quote from: unlovedwarrior on April 20, 2007, 01:37:58 PM

msconfig and selective mode try that
To elaborate a bit here, use msconfig as a diagnostic tool.  Go into the list on the Startup tab and unselect items and then restart.  Now, OPEN Task Manager and check your CPU usage.

I'm not sure whether the best approach is to start by unselecting most items and then adding back one at a time, or start by unselecting one item, restart and check CPU usage and then, if that item was not the culprit, run msconfig again and unselect something else, and so on.

Solve : I screwed up...?

Answer»

Ok, so this is a BIT of a messed up situation. To start with I had been running Ubuntu on my Acer aspire 5610 for a couple of weeks but I decided that for my laptop windows XP would be better. I had 2 partitions on my HD: a larger one for Ubuntu and a SMALLER one with backup files. When I installed windows XP I just formated the larger one and installed XP on it but apperently it made it a logical partition instead of a primary. So when I wanted my HD with just one partition I used partition magic and deleted the backup partition, resized the other one to use the whole HD and then I had to convert the logical partition into a primary because there obviously has to be a primary partition. Well this CAUSED my computer to TELL me that it can't find an OS when it tries to boot from the HD. I tried using the windows XP cd's recovery console to fix the boot sector and mbr but when I tried to add my OS to the boot list using 'bootcfg /rebuild' it said that it could not find any OS's to add to the boot list which could be caused by a CORRUPT file system. So I tried using 'chkdsk /r' but that didn't help at all.

So basically I want to know if I can fix this somehow or at least somehow copy some of my files from my HD because I really don't want to lose my pictures and like the idiot I am I didn't back them up. Thanks. You can use a Linux Live CD to burn files to a disc (if you have a burner, across a network, to a pen drive, etc. OR remove the drive and slave it into another machine.

You could also reinstall WIndows, but that would risk your data. Best to save that first.

Ok, I restarted my computer and now some things are gone. That jingle noise I hear when I start Windows XP no longer plays. The volume control doesn't appear on the TASKBAR anymore. I can't play midis anymore. I try going to the volume control by going to the control panel>>>sounds and audio devices and the enable volume control on taskbar is checked, it won't appear. When I goto the volume control from sounds and audio devices, I don't hear the "boink" noise when I click on the master volume bar. Also, my midi devices don't seem to be there anymore.

I did not do anything to do this. I need some help, badly.Try restarting your computer again.......If that doesn't work, try System Restore to go back about 2 days.
Have you installed anything recently?
What antivirus protection do you have?

If it's only the sound that is not working, check your sound driver/sound card. How do I do system restore?

::EDIT::

Never mind, I found out.

Thanks alot, it helped out just about everything I mentioned on here.Follow these steps:
1. Go to Control Panel (catagory view)
2. Click on Performance and Maintenance
3. At the left side under 'See Also' click on System Restore
When you're in the System Restore Menu
1. Make sure the 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' circle is ticked and click Next
2. In the small calender, click on a date 2 days before today and click Next
3. Make sure all programs are closed and click Next again.
The computer will take slightly longer to boot but you won't loose anything like recently SAVED work but recently installed programs might be uninstalled.Sorry to BUST into your topic but I'm new and don't' know where to put this question ...ok my 10 year old did something to his computer (he has no Internet) it has window 98 ..it boots up but then a black SCREEN and that's it nothing so i restarted it in safe mode but now what ? Solve : Windows XP stuck in a boot loop and OS disk won't load?

Answer»

Hi all, I'm new here...  I'm having tons of trouble with a HP Pavilion zv5000 notebook.  It has 1GB of RAM, a 40GB HDD, a CD-RW drive, but no floppy disk drive.  I have up-to-date virus software, spyware, and firewall.

Now that you know the kind of machine I'm dealing with...

This all started yesterday when I "halfway" uninstalled UBUNTU on my dual-boot system with XP in order to free up some disk space because I never really used the Linux portion anyway.  The comp was accidentally shutdown before I was able to finish this task, however, and upon trying to reboot the sys, I was shot down by an Error 22 from the PART of the HDD trying to load ubuntu because files were missing in order to boot.  So, it was impossible for me to boot up in XP, because ubuntu controlled the boot order for the HDD.  So, I inserted my "real" copy of the XP OS CD so I could use its partitioner in order to rid myself completely of ubuntu.  It deleted nicely.  However, my jump for joy upon seeing the Windows XP logo upon a reboot was stepped upon when all of a sudden instead of fully loading the OS, a blue screen was flashed for about a millisecond (so I don't know what it says), the screen goes black for a few seconds, and then it tries to reload XP again.  Same thing happens.  This won't stop unless I turn off the comp by holding the power button.  It does this every time I load up the computer via the HDD.

So, I thought that something happened to my XP of course, so I tried to insert my XP OS CD again so I could try to do a repair or something...  When I tried to do that, the same old screen saying "to boot from CD press any key..."  came up, so i pressed a key.  Then a screen flashes saying it's diagnosing the HDD, and then the screen goes blank and the CD doesn't boot up like it did earlier.  So, I try booting it numerous times, and the same thing happens.  I tried the disk on another machine, and it worked fine.  I have a Ubuntu OS disk, and it booted up fine on this machine.  I was also able to access the HDD from the Ubuntu.  However, the Ubuntu disk won't allow me to transfer anything from it to an external HDD because I supposedly don't own the rights to the data I'm trying to move... haha...  I guess it's just because the OS disk is just a "trial" version, and you have to actually install it in order to do anything like that.  So... I considered reinstalling Ubuntu just so I could have access to my data and move it before anything else happens, but it doesn't recognize the partition containing XP and my data, so I decided not to do that.  I went into the BIOS on the next reboot and did the SHORT and LONG HDD Self-tests.  They both passed.

Will someone please help me out?  Even if you just have a suggestion on how to get my data off the HDD, it would be helpful... I was thinking of trying to use a USB cable or something and hook it up to another machine while it's just idling after the XP OS CD fails again or something... would I be able to access my files that way? What happens when you enter safe mode? Or use the 'last known good CONFIGURATION'?

Unless Windows loads, you will not have access to your files with an USB cable. You might be able to use a Linux liveCD and burn your files to disk or copy them to USB memory stick since you've already got experience with using Linux you'll know how that goes down. It doesn't give me the options of entering safe mode or using the 'last known good configuration.'  The XP logo comes up with the loading bar for a couple of seconds, it flashes to a blue screen for a split second, the screen goes black and it happens again. What Raptor meant was to enter the boot menu

To do this, press F8 before the Windows load screen.

Then do what Raptor saidThanks, but F8 doesn't do anything on my machine before the XP logo. I tried every other function key, and it doesn't SEEM like I can access the boot menu that way.  F10 opens the PheonixBIOS menu, F12 tries to load from a LAN connection (which I don't have), and Esc opens the Boot order menu.  None of the other ones do anything... is there another way to access the boot menu?Unfortunately, there is no other access (except a boot disk, do you have a floppy drive?)

Continually (and in press, release, press, release) press the F8 key a few seconds before the boot screen. OK cool... continually pressing F8 like that worked, but unfortunately I'm getting the same problem whether I try booting in Safe Mode or under the last good configuration.   Oh, and no... unfortunately I don't have a floppy drive. Quote from: Raptor on April 21, 2007, 04:01:27 PM

You might be able to use a Linux liveCD and burn your files to disk or copy them to USB memory stick since you've already got experience with using Linux you'll know how that goes down.

I don't have Linux INSTALLED on my comp anymore, and when I try to reinstall it, it doesn't recognize my partition that has XP on it, so I will not reinstall it because I'll be sure to lose my data.  So, I can't really use a Linux liveCD.  Also, I have a Ubuntu OS disk, but when I use it, I can only view data on my HDDs; I can't change anything.  So, I can't use a USB key either in that way.  Do you have any other ideas for accessing my data? You can download a LiveCD from nearly any Linux coders their homepage, it is not the same as an installation CD. ... EXACTLY the same problem. I've got empty NTFS partition. Boot from CD stops at the same moment. Tried to install Windows from Boot discs. Windows intalls but after first reboot doesn't start.  HELP!Thanks Raptor,

I'm currently downloading a liveCD file... it'll be done in about an hour.  Then I'll try to retrieve my files.

Do you have any idea why the XP boot CD might not be working??Ah, Linux can not read NTFS partitions unless you're browsing an NTFS station that currently has Windows running on it.. OK, so much for that idea.

How about taking the HDD to a PC store and have them retrieve the information for you? Unless you have a 2.5" HDD IDE to USB converter I don't think we have much of a choice if the repair installation didn't work. A reformat is probably best. Well crap.  Oh well...  I guess I'll get this taken care of on Monday then.  Thanks for all your help! There are some Windows live CDs as well, but I don't know anything about those.

Solve : Suddenly out of space?

Answer»

Hi,

My c DRIVE has suddenly run out of space. I think it is because I downladed a new Torrent program and tried to transfer my old TORRENTS to it, but I think it has somehow doubled the space all these files are taking up. I can't use system restore because all the save points have been deleted due to running out of space. I have tried to delete any unnecessary files and programs, but this hasn't freed up much space. It definitely wasn't close to being full before today. What should I do?

I have Windows XP, by the way.

Thanks a lot for any help,
JesseUrgh...torrents......

All i know about them is if you download a torrent that is linked to a 50GB file, when you start the torrent in a program like UTorrent or something, the 50GB immediatley fills up, even if the download is not finished.

That could be your problem....Try system defrag.

In CMD, type:

defrag C: -f
(if you're using C drive; you can replace it if you use some other drive)

This starts system defrag, but you could always run it through the Start Menu.

And you could remove programs through the Start Menu as well.

Or you could just delete Torrent... until you get a bigger hard-drive

I think I know what you mean, but just to clarify...

I noticed while deleting files that some files that were part of torrents but that I hadn't ever downloaded were suddenly there and taking up space. But if I tried to play them, they wouldn't work. Is this what you mean?

If this is the case, do you have any suggestions as to what I could do? If it help, I first had BitComet and then tried to transfer everything to Azureus. I have tried to delete everything I can find related to Azureus, but some things won't delete and it hasn't freed up the space again.I tried doing defrag earlier, but I'll do it again now, just in caseTry deleting them in Safe Mode. Also, go to Control Panel and CLICK on Add and Remove Programs and try removing Azureus. See if that helps. You seem to have a lot of programs on your computer. Do you really need all of them?Torrents can be a bit risky sometimes.  What protection do you have?My friend was downloading a movie and he told me it turned out to be p()rn.
I dont trust torrents now.You really shouldn't trust any type of filesharing software.  Having it will eventually get you infected.  It's like sleeping around without SEEING who's been tested for what.I deleted all the Azureus stuff in Safe Mode, and I now have about 1.5 gig free, but I used to have between 20 and 30.

I have Norton internet Security, and I don't download an excessive amount using torrents, I don't do movies or anything too big.

I probably don't need all the programs on my computer, I'll go through and delete some. But it's never been a problem before this happened. Just out of interest, how do you know how much stuff I have on my computer? Is this the anti-file sharing committee?

BitTorrent is perfectly safe, I've been using it for ages and never got any dodgy files. It's reliability when it comes to CLEAN files is next to newsgroups and the program doesn't take up space for data it doesn't have yet ....

You do realise that World of Warcraft makes use of the BitTorrent protocol as well? Thanks a lot for everyone's help. I've gone through my computer and ruthlessly deleted stuff and now I have 15 gig free. Still not what it used to be, but I guess it's a lot better than nothing! Thanks againWhat are you getting off BitTorrent? You could use LimeWire if it's stuff like music and some moives, and they don't have viruses (unless you download things that are REALLY small e.g. 100kb for a movie is not a movie)Using Limewire is just asking for trouble...

Solve : Sound gone?

Answer»

Hello, hope somebody can help.

Today out of nowhere my sound stopped working. Im SURE it isnt the speakers because I use them for my turntables and they work FINE and my headphones dont work either in any of the ports on the COMPUTER.

Not sure why this is but did get some windows updates not long ago and got the new ersion of windows media player.

Im not so pc literate but i think im sure the dirver is realtek A'97 or something.

Anyone know what to do? I don't own a tv and the only music i can play is vinyl which is ussually good when im djing but i feel like im living in the thirtys every time i want to listen to some music now.

please help.
thank you
scottTo help you, we need to know more information.
Please tell us your OS.
Did you install anything recently?Sory it's windows XP sp2. I installed the new media player like i said but has worked alright since then, that was about 2 days ago. And 4 on demand aswell, but i uninstalled that a short while after wards but has worked ok since then.Try doing the following:
1. Go to Control Panel (classic view)
2. Open Sounds and Audio Devices
3. Click on the Audio Tab
4. Make sure the Default Device is set correctly. For me, it's Intel(r) Integrated Audio.

Post back if that helps. It shows up as Realtek AC'97 which i believe is CORRECT. so unfortuenatly that doesnt fix it.Hmmm...lets have a look at this then...
Go to Start, Run and type sndvol32 and press Enter.

Are all the volumes correct and everything?Yes they seem to be all alright.

I just called my freind and he said he had a problem like it and said about windows media player being dodgy with it. so could that be something to do with it?

hes told me to run a spyware check and restart (didnt work)Yeah i guess you could run a full system scan.
Let me get this straight first....There is absolutely no sound comming from your speakers no matter what you do? If there isn't any sound (like logging onto windows) then something might be wrong with your Sound Card or Sound Driver.

Perhaps you could do system restore to about 2 days ago but anything you've installed will be uninstalled.
System Restore doesn't delete files like recently saved documents and stuff.yep no sound at all and i think i tried a system restore but i'll have another go.

edit: yeh that hasnt worked  altho windows media player has reverted back to its a old version so it might not be thati read somewhere to ninstal my audio drivers, does anybody know if legacy audio drivers or realteck AC97 (which is listed in the same place in device manager) is my audio driver? Please post your computer or motherboard make and model and we can advise. My computer is an Aopen XC cube

http://www.5starsupport.com/faq/sound.htm#1-1

I found that site and ran through all the steps and it said since noen of them work it will probably be a soundcard problem.

Its an onboard sound card. Is it possible some conection could have come lose or something?AOpen is a manufacturer...they used hundreds of different MBoards so your info doesn't help.
DLoad and run Everest Home and it will tell us everything we need to know.
Post a log here.ok sorry, I don't have much idea about these things.

I did what you asked and got this. there was a lot more but it was really long. Hope this tell you what you needs. If not tell me what i should do or if this is not what you meant.

WOW Thanks so much.  I especially enjoy the search reference you gave me on google.

Usually it just pisses people off.  Give a man an answer, feed him for one day. Show him how to Google, make him a Knowledge Master for life.

It does amaze me, sometimes, how people POST the most elementary questions on here, until I remember that, once upon a time, I was a beginner myself. Then I found out how to search. Altavista, Google, Ask, Wikipedia.

A lot of the answers I give people on here I get by just opening Google in ANOTHER window.

What does this mean ? ?you know when you make it ask for your username and password
it wil change it FORMAT to a box like thing...

so i want the effect of it still being able to use the welcome screen
but you have to type the username and passwordI think in order to have to type your username and password at startup, you have to use that thing in windows xp where you press CTRL ALT DELETE and type the username and password and stuff.
Why do you want this? Just curious, don't have to answer if you don't want to. Just seems like entering your username is so much work...for funWell just for fun you would have to write a new splash screen with the ability to handle user logins and such...

I do not dabble in writing code so perhaps others here could assist.

Is it do able ? ?  Yes.

Fun ? ?

I don't know.
