Solve : Computer Problem is Tikin me off?

Answer»

Hello, when i turn on my computer sometimes it will run for 3-15 seconds and then restart itself. Other times it will run perfectly normal. I have checked my power supply and its fine, I also THOUGHT it was my hard drive so i replaced it but the PROBLEM is still occuring. Does anybody know what to do?

P.S. I run XP-500 mb RAM-100 gig hard drive-350 Watt Power SupplyHow did you check the PSU ? ?

Heat bad RAM and power are the 3 most common reasons for this.

F34RL355 ..... Do you get any ERROR messages ?

dl65 No, I didn't get any error messages
My ram seems to be fine(my ram has heat sync), and the power supply fan is working fine. Quote

and the power supply fan is working fine.

This is no indication at all the PSU is working properly.

Borrow another one and try it in there.

For the RAM you can DLoad and run MEMTEST...let it run a few hours.Your RAM "seems" to be fine. That's no guarantee that it is.

Patio, you beat me to the PUNCH with Memtest!

Solve : Problem with the sound on my speakers not working?

Answer»

I hope you have a Windows XP HOME Edition or the features may not look the same for you as they are for me.

The area of computers is one area that I can help nobody with.

Getting on a computer with no sound is nobody's friend. Naturally, you would want to listen to music while you are browsing and I do this all of the time. And I LIKE my music thunderously loud and open, thank you very much. I hate the silent speaker.

INFORMATION:

This is an Envision with a windows XP Home Edition operating system. My mother owns it, I just get on it. But that does not mean that I know anything about it or if anything at all (that would be a miracle). I just come on it and go whenever I please.

SPEAKERS:

The speakers are Altec Lansing, I think Altec Lansing SERIES100 Powered Audio 120I PC Multimedia Speakers. They are not the most expensive speakers in the world, but seriously, she does not have a lot of her own money (I think I might interfere and help her with that and perhaps purchase a better pair after this).

These are the very pair, here is a picture:

http://inexpensive.tally-printer.printerwarehouse.com/product_7156_detailed.html

They are black and silver in color. These speakers have a bright blue power light above the Aux In on the left SIDE. They have three knobs from left to right: Tone, Volume, and Power. And on the right side of the Power we have where the headphones plug up into the little socket there.

The little blue power light comes on just fine but when I turn the little black knobs all the way up but there is no sound. And I can't live WITHOUT my music so as you may suspect this annoys me and drives me insane.

The itty bitty sound icon on the lower right side of the screen -- I already fooled around with that. I know all about that (on this operating system it is a silver color and not a yellow color or maybe installing the Altec Lansing speakers simply made it a silver color as a theme). The sound is turned all the way up and it is not muted but there still is no sound.

So I went to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Advanced > Desktop Stereo Speakers -- I do not know really what the speaker setting should be so I set it to default. After that I went to Volume tab and turned everything all the way up and there is no mute.

Still no sound.

The speakers come together into one cord and this one cord is plugged up into the back of the computer properly, unfortunately.

There is no Multimedia Option in Control Panel on this Operating System. If there is something similar to Multimedia, it is obviously called something else (which is why I can't find it).

There are no funny noises (popping, crackling) when I turn this computer on. Everything sounds fine. Here's a few things
1) Make sure the speakers are pluged in.
2)Make sure your computer is not on mute.
3)Make sure the speakers are recieving power.
4)Go to the manufacture of your sound card's website and try redownloading your audio driver.check device manager and see if the audio card is seen there / check the BIOS and see if the sound chip (if it's built on the motherboard) in enabled

Solve : File, Send Page by Email, Link by Email?

Answer»

Uh, oh, my session had TIMED out. Anyway, I have Dell Dimension 4700. This computer was formatted, by a computer tech, about two months ago, and Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition put in. Before that I had Windows XP Professional. And before that I had the Home Edition again.

Anyway, the File, Send page or link by email would always work. Say, I had Yahoo Mail in the Tools, Internet Options, Programs, Email Section, when I would go to File, Send page or link, it would always take me right to my Yahoo mail; or if I had Hot Mail in the Email section, it would take me to my Hot Mail.

So, do not undersand why I get message boxes now. Yesterday was the first time I had tried the File, Send, since Home Edition put in.

Have to scoot to bed now, but will check sometime tomorrow to see if a reply. Thank you for your feedback. Hi Foxy.

I tried to bring up your problem on my system but just couldn't. Regardless of which mail program was shown in the E-mail section my system runs the default mail program.

For example, if Yahoo is shown in the E-mail section and Thunderbird is the default mail program my system runs Thunderbird not Yahoo.

Perhaps if you set Yahoo as the default mail program your problem will disappear.

Which program generates the "message boxes" you refer to Will repeat my message showing which ones bring up message box.

When I go to a web site and click on File, Send page by email or send link by email, I get the message box entitled ENTER Network PASSWORD, asking for user name and password. How can I get it to go right to the Hot Mail message box so I can send? In Tools, Internet Options, Programs, the Email section shows Hot Mail, so it should go right to Hot Mail.

If I change the Program, Email section to Yahoo Mail, INSTEAD of going to my Yahoo mail, I get a message box with the title Microsoft Exchange Setup Wizard, but it should take me to my Yahoo Mail.

Thank you, Dusty for your reply.

Now, how would I set Yahoo as the default? I have forgotten. MUST be my 72-year-old brain.

Solve : Profile Problems?

Answer»

It all started with the dreaded "NTLDR missing" problem. After repairing the problem and GETTING my pc back up, the real problems started. Is there a way that I can recover files that were in sub folders INSIDE of "My Documents"? Also, the PROFILES of other family members will not load when their accounts are accessed and all of their files in the respective "My Documents" folder appear to be missing. Can this problem be FIXED and their files recovered? One account is for a senior in COLLEGE who is really desperate to retrieve his lost info. Thanks.Try ThisThanks

How can I move those files?
or
How can I delete them and start all over and put them straight to the right folder?

Try starting in Safe Mode (Tap F8 at startup) and try moving the files whilst in safe mode.
Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum.Right click the file / at the bottom of the new screen look for 'Attributes' / uncheck the "Read" box / close the screen. If that doesn't work try Calum's suggestion.

Solve : Seagate ext HD + XP problem?

Answer»

I bought a 250GB Seagate USB 2.0 external hard drive to free up my internal HD. XP does not seem to like it. I have copied many small files to the new drive with no problem. However I just tried to copy some large VIDEO files to it WITHOUT success. The external drive has 230GB free. However when I try to copy a 12.4GB file from my system to the external HD, XP tells me there is not enough room and that I should delete files beore trying again. There is plenty of room on th external HD and XP has got it WRONG. The weird thing is that when I right CLICK on the external drive's icon and view it's properties, XP tells me there is 230GB free. How can I solve this problem? What file system is the external drive?
FAT32, which most drives come formatted as, has a file size limit.
If I were you, I'd reformat it using NTFS - right click on the drive in Windows Explorer, choose Format, then choose NTFS for the file system.
Make sure Quick Format is not checked too.
This will take a while with a large drive, my external 250Gb took around an hour or two.
Hope this helps.

Solve : East Asian language support problems with Windows XP?

Answer»

Hi all, please help !

I have just formatted and reinstalled XP and SP2. I need East Asian language support however it just won't work. I know how to set it up in control/panel regional SETTINGS, and I have done so, but it is not working. However it does all show up as being installed in there.

I have the option to show the langauge support in the taskbar ticked, but it is not showing in the taskbar or anywhere else! I was going to try UNINSTALLING East Asian langauge support and reinstalling, but that ticked box is faded out so I can't do it. Thats the only strange thing, otherwise it all looks right and is installed.

Is there anyway I can get round this and still be able to type KOREAN in webpages?

Oh well, I'v been messing round with this for about 4 hours I think. Time to go grab a beer out the fridge....

Thanks,
Paul From "How To":

# Insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 disc into your CD drive. If a window titled "Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP" opens, close it by clicking the "Exit" button.
# Navigate to the Control Panel by clicking the Start Button, then clicking "Control Panel." If you are using Classic View, you should click the Start Button, then "Settings," then "Control Panel."
# Click on "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options," then click on "Regional and Language Options." If you are using classic view, "Regional and Language Options" will be available directly from the Control Panel. A new window will open.
# Click on the tab labeled "Languages," then click the checkbox labeled "Install files for East Asian Languages." A window will pop up to warn you that you will need at least 230 MB of free disk space to install the files. (See "Related wikiHows" to learn how to check this)
# Click OK to close the POPUP.
# Click OK on the “Regional and Language Options” window to begin the installation. Be PATIENT, as it can take several minutes. Once all the files have finished copying, a popup window will tell you to reboot your computer to complete the installation.
# Before you reboot, remove the CD from your CD drive.
# Reboot your computer. Patio, thankyou for taking the time to answer my question. The problem is, that when I go in to the laungage thing where you can tick complex script langauges, or East Asian below it, The East Asian box is already ticked but is faded so I cannot alter it at all. Quote from: lastgoodbye on April 05, 2007, 08:53:21 AM

If you're using the quick launch icon on the start bar, you can right click it and click properties. On the shortcut tab, in about the middle of the screen there should be something called run. Click the down arrow and select Maximized and then click ok. Hope this helps. Nice catch Panda25.
Can a mod please move this too? Thanks Calum.
What does "Can a mod please move this too?" mean? Please elaborate.Questions aren't supposed to be ASKED in the Database; it's for solutions to common problems. This should be in Microsoft Windows, not the FAQ Solution Database. Calum is asking for this thread to be moved there by a "mod", or moderator.

I'm a moderator. Trouble is, I can't find a "Move" button. I see, Reply, Split, Remove, Modify, Print, Send, and Notify... So until the LOCAL Administrator comes along, this thread is stuck here.

Post in this thread, but expect it to be moved soon. Dilbert:
To move a topic in the FAQ Section
Go to the main post
Click "Modify"
Then click the "Additional Options" link
And select "Move"
Then Post/save
and it will ask you were to move it to

Moving it now...

And if you move a topic to "Others" select the first "Others" on the list or it just goes back into the FAQ section somewhereAh. Thanks. Can I ask another question while we're sort of on the SUBJECT?
Why does it not show you as Moderators any more?
It just says Dilbert, then EGGHEAD, and Zylstra, then Expert - nothing to say you are a Moderator.
Any idea why?
Admin probably explained it already and I've either forgotten or missed it.
I notice he has Administrator and Mentor. The title heading "Global Moderator" or "Moderator" are not listed on these boards. (Were still mods, dont worry )

Its just not included as a feature to display that status.

Nevertheless, if you need a moderator, just click the "Report to Moderator" button. No worry. (Use when necessary)Thanks Y'all for hijacking my thread. Quote

Nah, no luck using Panda25's sugestion, but I appreciate his time and trouble. Satch.
Attached is an image showing the window Panda25 mentioned.
Right click on the shortcut used to open the browser, I am using IE as an example.
Then choose properties and open the Shortcut tab.
Choose Maximized from the DROP down list, then click Apply, then OK.
Start the browser again - does it work now?
If not, open the browser and maximize it.
Then close it through File --> Exit.
Star it again - is it maximized now?
Hope this helps, and sorry for hijacking your thread.

Solve : AHH HELP!?

Answer»

hey! okay, here's the deal. my computer has been running REALLY REALLY low on memory, so it told me to delete some stuff i dont use. somehow i think i deleted the software for microsoft word..what i use to write and view DOCUMENTS!!!! so now i cant read any documents or create any new ones!!! and i dont know what to reinstall or even specifically what i had. i am so scared because this is my brother's computer and he has a ton of important documents on here...anyways whenever i click on one, it says: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an associateion in the folder options control panel." (if you havent noticed yet, i am incredibly clueless when it comes to computers, so id appreciate patience HAHA! thanks )Is Word still on your Programs menu? Will it still open/start?

Word is NORMALLY installed as part of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and it's not free. In fact, the full version of Office 2003 Standard Edition retails for about $400.

All the documents MAY still be on the hard drive. Do you know how to view files with Windows Explorer? Can you search on *.doc?no, word is no where to be found (in the programs menu or anything) so it won't open or start.

i cant view the files on windows explorer--says the same thing. and, sorry, what's *.doc? i know, im stupid when it comes to understanding computers. thanks for your help, sorry im such a pain.

am i gonna have to buy that $400 thing?? AHHH! I must say, you really need to learn some things about managing folders and files on a computer, about uninstalling software, and about freeing up disk space before you go REMOVING such things. With your level, or lack, of knowledge, you should have sought help when you saw that "low on memory" message rather than attempt to resolve it yourself. End of sermon.

Uinstalling Word would not delete the files created with it, unless you also deleted them in a separate action. When a new file is saved in Word, the file saved under the name assigned to it, with the "extension", doc, attached to it. For example, if I saved a file called mine, it would be saved on the hard drive as mine.doc. For more info, see http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=DOC. And, for more on File Extension in general, go to http://filext.com/

Again: Do you know how to view files with Windows Explorer? Can you search on *.doc? Do you know how to do searches in Windows? Hint: right click on the Start button. You might first just look in My Documents. See anything there?

And even if Word has been removed double clicking .doc files should have them open with Wordpad...

If not it can be found under Start / Programs / Accessories.
It comes with Windows.

*censored* Kissing

An old Bubba came riding into town on a hot, dry, dusty day.

The local sheriff watched from his chair in front of the saloon as the Bubba wearily dismounted and tied his horse to the rail.

The Bubba then moved slowly to the back of his horse, lifted its TAIL, and placed a big kiss where the sun don't shine.

He dropped the horse's tail, stepped up on the walk and aimed toward the swinging doors of the saloon.

"Hold on there, Bubba," said the sheriff. "Did I just see what I think I saw?"

"Reckon you did, Sheriff. I got me some powerful chapped lips."

"And that cures them?" the Sheriff asked.

"Nope, but it keeps me from lickin em."

Solve : i need HELP usb data traveller?

Answer»

HI
I NEED HEPL WITH MY WIN XP, IT DOES RECOGNIZE usb FLASH CARDS AS A NEW HARDWARE, BUT THE FLASH CARD DOESNT APPEAR ANYWHERE ON THE W-EXPLORER. THE ONLY OPTION I HAVE IS "SAFETLY REMOVE THE DEVICE".
I HAVE HAD ALSO THE EXPERIENCE WITH OTHER PC WIN XP WHICH DIDNT DETECT ANYTHING WHEN I PUT THE FLASH.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IN ORDER TO USE FLASH CARDS ON THESE PC-S
p.s. i am sure the usb ports are connected and active
thank you Please lose the caps, it makes the post harder to read.
Have you tried using device manager to remove the drivers for the device?
What exactly is this device?
You mention "usb data traveller" in the post title, but then mention flash cards - what is it?
And how are you connecting it?it is kingston data traveler usb devise.
most of the pc, which is running with xp detect the device imediatelly when i put it in the usb port, but there are pc-s which didn't.
the case one is - happens nothing
the case two is - i got the little thing down RIGHT, where is written:"safetly remove hardware", but when i open the win explorer i don't see the device anywhere.
was i clear now? - my english is not very good OK, I get you now.
So on some computers, the device is not detected at all, and on others it appears in "SAFELY remove hardware" but not in Windows Explorer.
But on other computers it works fine.
Is that right?
If so, are there any differences between the PCs that do and don't recognize the device? Are you sure its working on some computers.

Just WANT to make sure your usb is fine.no, i dont think so
regular machines - they all have windows xp. / i know that 98 needs a driver /
i dont know, may be there are difference between them, but how can i understand that yes, it works on my office MACHINE, but it doesnt work on some other machinesGoto Device Manager and try deleting everything under usb heading.

Then restart the machine.I'LL TRY THIS
THANK YOU

Solve : O S on c drive want to put all other files on external drive?

Answer»

Whats the best WAY to transfer all files except OS files to external hard drive and once booted, use files and programs from external drive.Simply put you can't. If you do this and go to run a program Windows won't be able to find it because it has been moved. The registry will always point to the location that the program was originally installed to.

Instead what you can do is move all photos, videos and data files to an appropiate folder on the external.
There are other things as well...create a folder called Downloads for example and point your browser to use that for the default dload location.
I have 3 DLoads, Test and Zips...the downloads automatically go to the DLoad folder.
While i am testing new APPS which i do alot they are in the Test folder until it's decided whether they are keepers or not.
Keepers eventually wind up in Zips with my other archives which is burned to CD on a regular basis.

Basically it's all about GETTING organised so you're not spending time searching both drives to find something.

As music and photos can get quite large they are a natural for another drive to store to.

But as i stated earlier this is not a good idea for system files or programs...havoc will ensue.

Hope this helps. And, if you want to try "installing" programs on an external drive, here's a good reference: Can I install programs on an external drive?. Note: The key is that, to work on an external drive, the program must be installed, not just copied, so that Windows knows where it is.

The EXCEPTION would be portable apps, designed to run from an external hard drive or flash drive. See www.portableapps.com, or www.u3.com for portable apps designed for U3 flash drives.

so any help would be greatly appreciated as i use it constantly , well each day anyhow and im lost without it thankkkks in advance

A few capital letters, less smileys and a little more punctuation would be helpful.
Also, no need to double post, I FOUND your other post in the programming section.

Do you only have the manufacturer's restore CD?
A real Windows CD would be helpful here.
As I see it, the situation is that your laptop was behaving very strangely, so you used the restore CD that came with it to restore it to factory conditions.
But now the laptop will not boot correctly, and asks you to run the restore CD again, which you have done.
I recommend you try it again, and double check the steps you take during the procedure.
The manual will probably have information on how to do this correctly, it sounds as if you cancelled the install or something went wrong during it.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. And before you do much more consider the implications of losing all your data FILES. Is your backup up-to-date or should you be looking at file recovery before proceeding much further I think it may be a little late for that if they have already run the recovery disk.
It's worth considering though, that's a good point.

Solve : File, send page by email, send link by email?

Answer»

Did not find ANSWER when I searched.

I have Windows XP Home Edition, SP2, and IE6, SP2.

If I change the Internet Options, Programs, Email section to Yahoo Mail, instead of going to my Yahoo mail, I get a message box with the title Microsoft Exchange Setup Wizard, but it should take me to my Yahoo Mail.

Anyone know how I can fix these two to WORK right? Thanks much.

Anna Ruth
Since you are using web client based e-mail it won't do this automatically...Copy and paste the links into Hotmail and it should work fine...

My computer seems to be stuck in "Stand-by Mode" and will not Wake UP. I have tried re-starting several times, but power light just flashes continuously and computer still will not wake up! Help.
By restarting, do you mean you turned the power off and did a normal START, or do you mean you've repeatedly tried to wake it up but it won't wake up? In other words, it's stuck in Standby?

If it's stuck in Standby, hold the power switch/button in for 4-6 seconds. It should completely turn off. Then, restart. If this has been or becomes a persistent PROBLEM, let us know. You'll NEED to pursue some troubleshooting steps.

Solve : computer restartsover and over?

Answer» IM having a very big problem with my compaq presario pc. i was attempting to install a CRACKED version of windows xp professional (the computer came with xp HOME) and during the standard computer RESTART, i noticed the computer restarted several times. it starts up, loads up until right before you get to the logon screen, (the logon screen doesnt SHOW up) and it restarts again, and keeps restarting continually. ive tryed booting in safe mode, ive tryed all the different options that you can try when you press F8 at startup. and when i selected the option to disable system restart at malfunction, or something like that, a blue screen came up saying there was a severe error, and it stopped itself from loading to prevent any further damage. it also wont let me do a system recovery, because the recovery files are located on a seperate hard drive on the computer, so i cant access them to run them, and since they came on a seperate hard drive, the PC came with no recovery cd's. i need help very badly, and it would be appreciated if someone could help me out. thanks for reading.Step #1:

Purchase a legal copy of the operating system.

Solve : Weird Program Problem. Possibly a virus.?

Answer»

So, this is not happening on my computer, it's happening on my sister's (which is the one I am using.)

She confronted me with the problem that on a certain pet site there was a problem. It only happens on this computer so it's not a glitch on the site. I was using firefox so I tried SWITCHING to Internet Explorer, but that wouldn't even open.

On the forum posts near the bottom of the page show up completely blank. I was GOING to do a screenshot of it and ask another person on the site, but FOUND out that Microsoft Word wouldn't open. My next resort was paint which responded with a pop up message saying that paint could not open a new file.

Most programs won't even open. None of the Microsoft stuff will open and sometimes when I open a new tab in firefox it's all black.

There are only a few THINGS installed on this computer that I didn't get approved by a computer geek. One such program is AC3filter. Could it be causing this?

I really don't know what is happening with the computer and since I'm the one who installed AC3filter (which won't let me uninstall it) I'll be in deep trouble.

Also, Half the time when you click on My Computer it comes up asking you about a share drive.

The computer CPU says lenovo and 3000 J Series. I don't know exactly what those mean, but it might help someone with diagnosing the problem.Could you please let us know what operating system is being used on this computer?

Solve : Made Open as default in File types for Folder?

Answer»

Hi,

I have make OPEN as default in File types for Folder.
As a result anything i double click in explorer opens in a new tab.

How do i make it normal, i.e. not the default one.

ThanksTo me, your post makes no sense. "Open as default" makes no sense. Of course, files normally open when double clicked. What do you expect? And, explorer does not have tabs.

Exactly how do you define "normal"?Open Explorer ...go to Tools/Folder Options and the third item down check "Open in Same WINDOW"

And i'm as confused as soybean...Okie,

Lemme explain.

Explorer:
Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types -> Search for Folder
Click Advanced
There is generally one open & explore.

I have made this open as the "Set default"

Now on even "Open each folder on same window", on double clicking a folder it opens in a new window.

How do i make it not the default one, as it was working fine before i made it default. As when you double click a folder in explorer view, the LEFT side tree view expands.

But now a new window opens.

Hope this makes sense.

Solve : Help !!?

Answer»

Okay...here's the problem.

A friend of MINE complained about some issues on her laptop. She didn't have any up to date antivirus. I installed Symantec and ran a scan. there were 98 Viruses & TROJANS that were found. I deleted them and when I rebooted there was an error box with verbiage of nrcs.exe.
Symantec's website suggested how to remove via editing the registry.
I backed up the registry and followed their instructions (Backdoor.Ranky.X)
When I rebooted, the computer would get to the WELCOME screen and when a account was selected would start to load the account, then SHUT down and save SETTINGS in a couple of seconds.

It would do this in safe mode as well for any account selected including administrator. Same thing for safe mode w/command prompt.

I was able to restore the registry to the backup, but I'm still at the point that it saves settings and goes back to the welcome screen as soon as an account is selected.

I'm perplexed, and any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Two possible causes for this behavior are as follows:
• You have a filter that applies to display only unread messages.
• You are looking at a Microsoft EXCHANGE Mailbox and you have an instance of Outlook running that has delivery set to a Personal Folders (.pst) file.

Do either of these possible causes apply to you?Yes I beleve I have a filter on that applies to display only unread messages. Sounds like my problem. How do I turn it off? thanksSaviour--thanks so much. It worked!!!You're welcome...I'm glad everything worked out for you.

Solve : getting blue screen of death, damaged DLed files?

Answer»

i recently upgraded my computer, i got a new motherboard + graphics CARD so i reformatted my hard drive. Everything works fine now except just about anything i download is corrupted or damaged, including game demos, the new update for my graphics card, any quicktime videos will stop playing and say "buffer overrun detected". "I used the"Clear Private Data" function in Firefox and I was able to download a 3MB file with out it corrupting." i tried that and it didn't work. I also get the blue SCREEN of death randomly, not very often, but twice today, when I first turned my pc on and second when i was writing this to you. I've only been able to read a tiny bit of what it says, i think I've read "memory failure" before. I had a similar problem with my old, old computer, i would get the blue screen of death and it would freeze and stuff. So I took my pc to Geek Squad and for 40-60$ they said my memory and hard drive were dead. So I'm hoping you have an answer or if i need to get a new hard drive or something. thanks

Solve : File in use, when attempting to replace ... yet services are off?

Answer»

Hello... Here is my problem and my solution which I am having some problems with in a batch file on Windows 2000 and XP platforms.

Problem that I wrote the batch to fix: Users need to run software in local Admin mode such as Pagemaker etc, and as Admins the users tend to download and INSTALL junk LIKE weather bug, Limewire, and Chat software like AIM etc since you can not designate Admin privileges for one PIECE of software and User Privileges for rest etc.

Solution: I wrote a batch that finds and replaces the EXE's for these programs on all systems on the network as a scheduled task and replaces the EXE with a same named EXE, but one that blats to the user and alerts me to an installation of unapproved softare.

Solution Problem: If the SERVICE is started such as AIM, the service has to be stopped via net stop, before the EXE can be replaced. Some programs even though you shut off the service, you will get an error during the file replacement stating that the file is in use by windows, but it is not a Windows System file, it is the programs EXE. With the service off, the EXE should be able to be overwritten with my EXE that the batch is programmed to REPLACE, yet I get the error of "File in use by Windows" when trying to overwrite even when services are stopped for the program.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how you can stop Windows from grabbing the programs EXE as "in use" when the service is stopped??? Would like to do this without having to run a utility on the systems manually off of another bootable device like USB thumb drive then alter etc.

Thanks,

Dave
Sounds like the service is off but the program is resident in the memory. Can you do a reboot and run a script during the reboot to replace the EXE?

Can you install the necessary software to the all users folder, then revoke admin priviledges?

Solve : Crashed HDD? Tried everything, I think. Anymore suggestions??

Answer»

Hi All,

My machine crashed unexpectedly last week with an "error loading
OS" message after the BIOS boots up. I took the HDD into work and my
computer there was able to see the second and third PARTITIONS on the drive
(used for data storage), but not the first. I paid a bunch of money for some
software that was able to find my files on the first partition and copy them
off of there. So, now I'm trying to see if I can recover the drive anyway.

I brought it home, and ran Recovery Console from XP Pro boot disks. (Recovery Console from an XP CD wouldn't work, because it couldn't find the Windows FOLDER anywhere. Therefore, it wouldn't even give me the option to start Recovery Console. For some reason, however, the boot disks didn't have that problem.)

From there, I ran:
> fixmbr
> fixboot
> copy [cddrive]:\i386\ntldr c:\
> copy [cddrive]:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
> bootcfg /rebuild

All of those commands seemed to work fine except for the bootcfg command. It wouldn't run, saying something about the disk has one or more unrecoverable problems. I tried to run chkdsk /r on it, and it says the same things.

If I try to boot to the HDD now, it says that NTLDR is missing, but NTLDR and NTDETECT are right there on the drive. I also copied a boot.ini to the root directory. If I type "dir", it shows me those three files and nothing else.

I don't know what else to do. Any ideas? I know I can reformat and reinstall Windows, but I'd really like to try to recover the system alltogether, if I can.

Thanks!
From what you are saying I would say your hard drive is toasted. Even if you were to get it started again it will die again soon. I think formatting will not work. In a nutshell, start looking for a new drive.

What about running the free diagnostics from the appropriate drive maker's site?Hi All,

It's a Western Digital drive. I ran their diagnostics software on it, and the PROGRAM didn't find any problems with it whatsoever -- even when using the DEEP scan.

Solve : Sudden Shut-Downs, CPU Usage at 100%, Frozen - No Idea How to Fix...?

Answer»

I’m going to try to be as succinct as I possibly can, as I’m at my wit’s end and I have no idea how to fix this problem/problems/issues. I work from home, so I am my own IT person and without a stable notebook, I’m in real trouble.

I have a Dell Latitude C640, Pentium 4, 200 GHz, 1gb RAM, WinXPPro.

These are the problem(s) I’ve encountered:
(Several months ago) Began with the unit seeming to run very hot and suddenly shutting down with no warning. Was under warranty at the time and Dell replaced fans, motherboards, screens. I truly don’t think it helped much, as the unit seemed to still run hot. But anyway…

(Within the last 10 days) Started shutting down without warning again. Would ALSO freeze up, to where Con/Alt/Del wouldn’t pull up Task Manager. Had to force the unit down innumerable TIMES. Finally, couldn’t even get the unit to boot up – it would shut down before ever booting up completely, even in Safe Mode. FINALLY got WindowsXP reinstalled. Got to where it could be booted up, updated Windows completely, started to reinstall my software, including Office2003, iPod, Palm, mostly just the things I use everyday, including ICQ and AIM. I’m not a gamer or anything like that. Anyway, often during downloads and updates, the computer would still suddenly shut down. Also, suddenly no audio device is recognized, as well as I am still unable to sync my Palm or my iPod, as they aren’t recognized as even being plugged into the USB port (this was no problem before these issues started). However, during this most recent turmoil, I’ve discovered that when booting up, the file svchost.exe SYSTEM is running at 90+ CPU, with Mem Usage up to the 90,000s, and the overall CPU usage is locked at 100%. I can right-click svchost.exe and choose End Process Tree, if I get Task Manager opened fast enough, which solves the immediate problem, but my taskbar would suddenly change back to some weird looking Win98 type, same with Internet Explorer and most windows I would open after the taskbar change. I did shut off Automatic Updates in Windows Security Center, but the computer is still sluggish and will freeze periodically, etc.

Here is the Task Manager (again, before turning off Automatic Updates):

I have downloaded and installed two Microsoft patches that were supposed to address the problems: WindowsXP-KB927891-v2-x86-ENU and WindowsXP-KB921883-x86-ENU. I ran a scan for a worm CALLED FixWelch. I would like to have Automatic Updates work, as I’m not the best at staying on top of these things. I never had a problem with these things, even during the first time the computer was shutting down on its own. Any help you can give me would be most appreciated, but thanks for looking anyway!

Solve : Can't Copy any more to External USB drive?

Answer»

I have a 400 GB external Seagate USB drive, that was setup with FAT32 (When I have the chance, I'll convert it to NTFS). It won't allow me to copy any more large (3-6 GB) mpeg2 files from my desktops 2 HDs. I've only used about 120 GB on the USB drive. I deleted some files and still couldn't add any more. I did a full check disk of the USB drive with no errors. There's no file sharing or networking on any drives. I TURNED off SageTV software thinking that somehow it's locking on to the files. I rebooted the desktop. I turned off and disconnected the USB drive. Nothing. I thought there was a FAT32 HD size limit, but if there was, i should be able to add files after I delete some old ones. Any IDEAS?I believe there is a 2G limit in FAT 32...you might have to convert now or use a file splitter.

Make SURE you have backups before converting to NTFS just in case...a Fat 32 drive can go up to 2 terrabytes with a 32kb cluster size

But not with a Seagate external data transfer disk. I really would like to know why ?
your only OPTION appears to be to format the drive to NTFS
there web SUPPORT site
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SATA_Troubleshooter_-_4_GB_File_Size_Limit&vgnextoid=1b054a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

says this

4 GB File Size Limit

Hard Drive Reports “Disk is Full” During File Save and With FAT32 Partition

The FAT32 file system has a 4 GB limit for the size of file that it can accept to be saved onto it. This means that any attempt to save a file that is larger than 4 GB will be met with an error message of “Disk is full or Not enough space” even though the hard drive may have a large amount of space still available.

Windows 98 and Me accept only FAT32 partitions, but Windows 2000 and XP accept both FAT32 and NTFS partitions. NTFS partitions have no limit for file size, so NTFS may be preferable for saving a file that is larger than 4 GB.
Ahh, said the blind man. That explains it. I was able to copy the smaller files, but not the larger ones.

Solve : Computer running slow and other probs?

Answer»

I could sure use some assistance. My computer has been running extremely slow and now my Ourlook said I just received an e-mail but yet it is not showing up in any of the folders.
I am running Bit Defender, AdAware, and Spybot, but have not picked up anything. The only thing I have noticed is that a folder keep trying to get sent out, but I have BitDefender blocking it. How can I tell if there is a virus on my system? If I post the processes running, would that help? Thank you.to many cookies in your internet explorer cache, spyware, can slow down
run an update for BIT DEFENDER then you should be ABLE to run a scan which will hopefully find any virus infections, you must keep TOOLS like ad-aware , spybot s&d and of course bit defender updated regularly otherwise they will not be able to protect your computer against the new bugs which come out frequently. and they must be used often, scanning the machine at least once a week.
other free tools that work very well are
for free antivirus, antimalware, antispyware
avg antvirus

asquared anti almost everything it removes 657.505 bugs at the moment

in internet explore at the top see tools, PROPERTIES, general , then delete cookies and internet history etc, security set to medium, I have updated all the software and deleted cookies, etc.
When I ran Spybot, I checked for start-up processes and reviewed each in detail. I found one that appears to be suspicious: crypt32chain.dll
When I googled this, some people say it is a trojan. I unchecked it from the start-up processes and the computer seems to be running better. Any suggestions or comments on this?Dload and INSTALL then update AVG Anti- Spyware...

Dis-connect from the web.

Run the AVG program in safemode and let it FIX all it finds.

Re-boot and do a search for that file to see if it is gone.

Post back with a list of all your security apps...

Solve : MS Word Mail Merge HELP?

Answer»

I need HELP with MS Word Mail Merge.

I am a NOVICE in MS Word, but I've managed to create a mail merge template and linked it to the excel spreadsheet which contains the data. My problem is that when I merge the data into the document, I am getting extra BLANK lines where I don't WANT them, and some data shifts left or right of the merge field.

As I said before I am just one step above being a total illiterate when it comes to this. I did not understand the Help PROVIDED by MS word to try and figure it out since it went beyond my capability of understanding.

If ANYONE can offer a suggestion in a very simple format, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Solve : PLEASE HELP! System Restore driving me NUTS?

Answer»

Hey all. Im new here but I've had this problem ever since getting my laptop. It is a Toshiba Satellite and I've had it for about a year and a half now. Ever since I got it, system restore did not work. I've tried EVERYTHING that I've found on the internet about deleting all your restore points, CHECKING to make sure all your updates are on, and I even followed all the directions on the microsoft help page itself. I really need help now. When I try to do a system restore, it tells me "could not restore computer blah blah blah". Well thats only my first problem.

The reason I need to do a restore is this: The other day a friend sent me a program that changes your voice when using a mic. I installed it, but my mic stopped working, so I uninstalled and restarted. Well now my mic wont work at all. With the help of 3 different people I've been through ALL of my mic settings and nothing is set wrong. Nothing is muted, nothing is set to low volume, everything is checked. Its like it wiped out my mic input or something.

So, witout being able to do a system restore, how the heck do I get my microphone to work??? anybody? please help! this has been driving me crazy and I cant find any answers on the internet!!!!!First thing...your microphone..

Check your DEVICE Manager through ControlPanel/System and then click the Hardware TAB and then the Device Manager button.

Do you see any yellow exclamation points? What we're looking for is a problem with your sound card. If this is the issue, we'll need to locate a driver for it.

As far as System Restore goes, make sure it is turned on...

1) Start/Control Pnel/System and then click the System Restore tab. Here you can turn System Restore on/off.

Keep us posted...Thanks for your response!

I checked both of what you said and each is as it should be :-/

Any other suggestions? You may want to scan your system for malware...

If you have any malware protection installed on your computer, update it first.

Turn System Restore off and boot into Safe Mode.

While in Safe Mode...do a complete system scan to see if anything is found. Once the scan is complete, reboot Windows, normally, and turn System Restore BACK on...and post results, please?

Thank you...That sounds like a good thought, but, my computer has been like that since I purchased it, and I scan weekly with both Norton and Adaware. I just think the problem is because someone messed up while it was being made.Maybe you could read the below links.I believe you can find
your sound drivers at the second link.

Solve : Driver Name Problem?

Answer»

Hi --

We bought an EXTERNAL hard drive, and while safely detaching a flash drive from the FRONT of the computer, I accidentally detached the hard drive. This however is not the problem. All the programs and music that's on our iTunes was stored there, and when I plugged it back in, instead of REVERTING back to E:\ it turned into G:\ and the programs and music have "disappeared" from the computer in a way.

Can someone help on how I can CHANGE the G:\ back into E:\ so everything works again and our family can avoid the heartache?

Thanks.Hi - welcome to the CH forums.

Please post your system specs, Operating System, HARDWARE setup etc.

What happens when you reboot Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, right click on the external hard drive, select Change Drive Letter and Paths, and change the drive letter. Let us know if that works.

Solve : transfer xp home?

Answer»

Hello

I would like to transfer Windows XP Home Edition SP1 from P4 computer to P111 computer and install the Windows XP Home Edition SP2 just purchased in the P4 computer. Is this alright or will it be a big hassle?
Thanks
harleyFirst thing to do: backup everything important (backup on another media, not on the same harddisk).
If it will be a hassle? It depends on the important data, applications or settings. There may be incompatibilities with the hardware, I don't know, but there may appear problems.
Question: what do you mean by "transferring xp home on another computer"?

P.S. I don't know what is a P111 computer.Viking

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not explaining my question better , but when its comes to computers i am as dumb as thet come.
I got a old computer with a Intel Pentuim 3 PROCESSER (CPU) in it , and i have a newer computer with a Intel Pentuim 4 processer (CPU) in it .
I have a retail full version Windows XP Home Edition sp1a in my newer computer and i want to put it on the old computer and activate it , then put a new Windows Home Edition sp2 on the new computer?
Shoot , help me out if you can , if you can not understand what i mean i can understand that to.
Thanks
harley
So you have an older Pentium 3 and a newer Pentium 4. I don't understand why don't you just install Service Pack 2 over the Windows XP Home (Service Pack 1) which you say it's on the Pentium 4. PAY attention, I speak only about installing Service Pack 2 over the installed Windows XP Home (with Service Pack 1 already applied to it). Why do you have to "switch" those 2 Windows XP Home Editions, when we are talking about the same product, with the sole exception of an update? You may freely install Service Pack 2 over any Windows XP products, without any additional costs.

(My assumptions, based on what you wrote:

1 computer with a Intel Pentium 3 processor; Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack ?

1 computer with a Intel Pentium 4 processor; Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1, on which you want to install = update a Service Pack 2).

If I were you, I would install Service Pack 2 on both computers. If you own Windows legally (both copies), you won't pay any additional fee. EXCEPT maybe the disc which you will use to install Service Pack. Advice: if you don't have a strong connection to internet, do not install Service Pack 2 from Microsoft site. Search for a CD with SP 2. Or do you have one already?Viking

Thanks i didnt know that they were the same. i got windows xp home upgrade on the PENT.3 now and i got windows xp home sp1a with sp2 installed on the pent.4 now. and i got one new windows xp home sp2 that hasnt been opened yet and i have a sp2 on cd-rom. So if i put the new windows xp home sp2 on the old pent.3 it will be excatly the same as the windows xp home sp1a with the sp2 that i have on my newer pent 4 computer?
thanks again
harleyYes, if you install service pack 2 you will have the same thing (Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2) on both computers.

Solve : What exacktly does it do when it install something?

Answer»

When you run a installation file.. What exacktly does it do? Does it only copy files too an map and thats it? and how can one file have so much data too makes so many diffrent files? Gha explain it all how a installation is please! You may find this helpful.there's a whole long list of things that are changed, added, ect. a couple COMMON is the registry and file assosiation... Some of wich is irreversable(realplayer reasosiates .MP3 and many others sound files) . Some (Nero like) cd authoring programs lock the cdr drive so that cd-r's can only be created in the installed program. i saw a computer that had 5 different cd authoring programs after removing all of them the cdr was still unuseable in the STANDARD windows burning... Quote from: fat_basterd21 on March 28, 2007, 10:31:49 AM

some of wich is irreversable.

Not if you know what you are doing. You can remove all traces of them in the Registry. I have Nero 6 Ultra and can use other programs, if I WISH. I've burned with WMP and with the standard Windows thing. hehu ...... Perhaps if you EXPLAINED why you asked the question, we can provide you with a more definative answer.
