Solve : Must I Re-Activate WinXP After HD Transfer To MB??

Answer»

I have a legitimately activated copy of WinXP Home running on a 80G IDE HD on a P-III motherboard with 1.2G CPU & 512MB. I plan to transfer my HD, PCI VIDEO Card, PCI Sound Card, and Power Supply to a P-4 motherboard with 2.2G CPU, 768mb and a new DVD burner. The P-4 will replace the P-III on my cable internet connection. Can anyone share their experiences as to how this can be done without voiding the current WinXP activation. In otherwords, because of the new motherboard, CPU and memory, will I have to (or will I be able to) re-activate WinXP, and can the re-activation be accomplished over the internet or by telephone? If the install is legit you should have no problem re-activating with the Mothership...

However there happens to be another method.

Not for the FAINT of heart...

Solve : how to change boot up options??

Answer»

hi, i know it sounds really stupid, but i was experimenting and TRYING to install a version of windows on someone elses hard drive, and then returned the hard drive to the owner. this proved unsuccessful. the reason i did this is unimportant, but the problem that has RESULTED is. when my computer was finished installing windows one their hard drive i obviously removed the hdd from the system and booted up my computer. it shows the options:
- windows xp professional edition
- windows xp home edition
and UNLESS im really quick (less than a second) it automaticall chooses XP PRO (which is the version from the foreign hdd) and quite expectadly, it fails to run.
i can vaugly remember playing with things in the past and finding an option to change that menu. i seem to remember it being in the 'repair this version of windows' option when booting the windows installation, but im not sure.

can anyone give me a definative answer?
thanks,
lukeNone here, not too smart. What exactly do you want to do?to remove the unnecessary option of starting up Windows XP Pro

Solve : Can't restart pc in normal mode from safe mode!?

Answer»

Can anyone help? I was trying to remove Trojans with spy ware doctor in safe mode as I couldn't get my anti-virus to open in safe mode, thought I would try other safe mode options to see if anti-virus would open and run (using f-secure) booted up in safe mode (command prompt) and now I have problems. My laptop keeps REBOOTING back to safe mode (command prompt). I've tried rebooting on F8 and selecting normal mode, but starts back in safe mode (command prompt)! What do I need to do? operating system is XP SP2When it boots into Safe Mode...

Try clicking Start/Run and then type msconfig in the box and click OK.

Make sure Normal Startup is selected and click Apply then OK.I'm in safe mode (command prompt) so i don't have start tab available, just command (cmd.exe)
Type exit at the C:\> prompt to exit the Command Prompt in Safe Mode.

Can you do that? If so...once you exit, reboot your PC back into Safe Mode (no command prompt)and try again.no change, exited cmd.exe. reboot in safe mode (standard) screen fills up with intoduction of drivers then on to log on admin page, once you click on that it's then back to safe mode (command propmt) :-? :-?When you started Safe Mode in Command prompt, were you successful in running Spyware Doctor?

Of course you'd have to locate the Spyware doctor executable in order to run it.Following up...

Regardless of what version of Safe Mode you use...once the computer reboots...it should do so normally.

The fact that yours does not means you may have other Windows issues.

You may want to check out the following link:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI

It is very immportant you read this page carefully if you choose to repair your installation of XP SP2.Firstly, I Knew I had 4 viruses (Trojan java class loader) and that my anti virus was detecting but not repairing or deleting, so I tried to run (f-secure) in safe mode to fix virus, but program would not open so I tried to run spyware doctor which detected 4 viruses and deleted them. at this point I’m STILL in safe mode (normal) then I tried other safe mode options from system configuration to open f-secure tried safe mode (command prompt) which after booting I realised it's a command program and wouldn't Know how to use it so I rebooted and using f8 option chose normal start up option, which is when I started having reboot problem. ajay,

Try RESTORING your computer to an earlier date by running Restore from the command prompt. You're saying it boots in Safe Mode with Command Prompt...

1) Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

2) Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

After the system restore is performed. Make sure you reboot the computer.

See if this will stop the computer from booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt. If it does...then do the following to check your system for malware:

1) If the computer boots normally after performing the above...then the first thing we want to do is turn off System Restore. You can do this by going into your Control Panel, open System Properties, select the System Restore tab, and then check the box to turn off System Restore. Click Apply and/or OK.

2) Once you have turned off System Restore, reboot your computer into Safe Mode only.

3) Run Spyware Doctor and fSecure to remove unwanted malware.

4) Reboot into Windows, normally, and turn System Restore back on.

Post your results here.thanks guys, worked it out. from command prompt i typed \dir then typed in \explorer which opened windows which let me get into system config and remove command prompt option on safe mode.

I'm putting up another problem in software section, for some advice on.

thanks again Glad to hear you worked it out...

Solve : Windows XP boots but no login...?

Answer»

My trustly Compaq Presario laptop running XP HOME Edition SP2 is acting up. WINDOWS boots, gets to the blue screen with the XP Logo but never gets past that point. No login appears. This is out of the blue, it has been working fine for years, I booted it up this morning and it is stuck. I tried booting in safe mode, the same happens. I remember this happing about 2 years ago, the way I solved it then was by REINSTALLING Windows. That is an option of course but I'd rather not go there since it will take many hours of work to get everything back in order.
I don't have boot or RECOVERY disk, I do have the 'quick restore' disks from Compaq but they reformat the HD so that is a last resort option.
I will probably take it to a support shop but if anyone has any IDEAS or suggestions I am all ears...
I believe it's all covered--->Here

Solve : Hard Disk Name is BLUE in colour?

Answer»

I had just installed a new HARD disk and install xp into that new nard disk. But the name of my old hard disk is in blue colour :: Local Disk(E:) instead of the normal black colour

i THINK it got to do with the ownership.. or something ELSE..

if got any related link that can solve this problem pls TELL meThe blue color usually signifies compression. Is your hdd selected for compression to save space :-?oh i see.... i had solve that.. thanks i thought that blue colour is due to ownership properties...Nope, that is the green color.

Green = encrypted so that only one user can view the files.
Blue = Compressed to save space.

It's a good idea with WINDOWS XP to compress just a folder and it's contents instead of compressing an entire drive. Compression saves space but slows Windows' reaction time when accessing files in a compressed drive or folder.

Solve : Puter won't allow 2 web sites open at same time...?

Answer»

Hi -
Just a little thing - but frustrating. My new XP computer will not ALLOW me to have 2 seperate web SITES open at the same time. Cntrl-N will duplicate the same site - I need 2 DIFFERENT sites open so that I can switch back & forth between them.

Example: Open Internet Explorer - then open Google - IE shuts down.

I assume this is a simple setting - but really don't have a clue

Thank you for your suggestions. When you hit Control N, and the SECOND window opens...just CHANGE the address in the second window.

When you say you open IE and then go to Google your IE shuts down? That's not two windows...only one. Sounds like something else is going on.

What version of IE are you using? Are you staying on top of Critical UPDATES from Microsoft? Are you staying on top of your malware protection?Thank you for the input Saviour.

Your Control-N then Change the Addrees in the Second Window suggestion works - but is not as straight forward as...Click 2 shortcuts - have 2 web sites open.

I guess a better example of the issue would be: Open Google - then open THIS web site - Google CLOSES......and is no longer OPEN on my desktop or toolbar. I would like to have them both open and readily avaialable on my desktop or toolbar.

I use IE6 and my puter is reasonably current with updates and the like.

Thanks again Have you tried IE repair?

http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htmThank you all for your input.
I found the answer by viewing an older conversation in the IE forum.
The answer was to go to:
IE Tools>Advanced Options>Un-check "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts"

Thanks agian - Gary H. Quote

Solve : Capslock W and E- Error noises and no input?

Answer»

I was doing some scripting in AutoHotKey, and DISCOVERED than in my script when I HELD down Capslock W and E, I got a weird BEEPING sound. I canceled out of my scripting to see what would happen normally if i pressed the three buttons. The result was the same strange repeated error beeping.

Other interesting NOTES about this problem.

1. This also happens if you hold down q and w at the same time. After some testing, it appears that these are the only TWO sets of keys

2. While capslock and E are held down, E will continue to be fired, but if you press W it will not fire, and E will temporarily stop firing. If you release W and E and press E again, it will continue to fire as normal.

So what the heck is this? It might sound weird, but I do actually do things that require me to press this button combination quite frequently. Any idea what the source of the problem is and how to solve it?

Note: You don't need to be in any program to test this out. Just hold down capslock W and E and hear it for yourself!

-JaeganDidn't happen to me.

How old is your keyboard? Some only allow two keys to be pressed simultaneously.

Solve : Search tool not starting at all (win2k)?

Answer»

For whatever the reason, in my Windows2000 installation the "Search" tool does not work at all. If I try starting it, nothing happens, no animated hour-glass, no error messages, NADA, zip, nothing.
It does not start no matter from where I try (My computer, Start- menu etc).

Me so and full of :-?Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / SERVICE packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>< :-)OS: win2000 (it says so in the subject)
Antivirus: avast!
Service pack: SP4
Don't know when it started and yes it did work just fine for years (this machine has been in use since 2000, with the same OS).
Yes, I install new software and quite frequently also remove them. But any of them should have no effect whatsoever over this, since those are just accessories, mostly something to with web site development etc.
I don't LIKE the homemade tune ups people do to the their (like, hey if you stab your registry here and here, your machine will run 0,0001% faster) machines, only thing I have done, is to manipulate the "start" button with a program called Resource Hacker. It changed the text on the button and nothing else.

Also, let it be noted that I am no way a novice with computers, I have worked in tech support and used to deal with situations like this myself, but this one I just can't understand and as I'm not able to find any advice with e.g Google.

[edit]Forgot to say that I can not find anything related to this in my eventviewer's system logs.[/edit]

[edit]And before anyone asks, it's namely the "search for files or folders" which is not responding.[/edit]Have you tried system file checker ? ?
Start/Run SFC /scannow and hit Enter.
If that produces no joy Travel Here for instructions on a non-destructive repair install...The system file check didn't occur to me, good point.

Looks like I have to dig up the installation CD to complete it properly. Uh...

If the sfc does not work, I guess I will live without the search GUI and continue using command line tools... The repair install i suggested will retain all your data and installed programs...

Good Luck.Yep, I'm aware of that, but as the search seems to be the only thing gone borken, I don't know if I really WANT to go through the trouble.

But we'll see what happens with the sfc when I discover the Win2k CD, if I ever do. Don't think I have used it in 5 or 6 years...

Thanks for the advice anyhoos.

Solve : Installed new cd-rom driver and cd/dvd burner?

Solve : system restore/ other ideas??

Answer»

After INSTALLING Bitcomet (torrent) on my computer, the internet would not work the next time I turned it on. I have XP home. It is the second computer on the NETWORK, and the local connection does not work either.

I get a message saying that a network cable is unplugged, or a different message that there is limited or no connectivity. I connected a laptop to the same CABLES, and it worked fine, so it appears that the problem is just with the computer.

I tried to do a system restore back to before I downloaded any of that stuff, but I never created any restore points. From the restore wizard, I do not see any auto restore checkpoints, I guess my computer never created any.

Is there a way to restore back to the way it was about a week ago, or is there an alternative solution?dantrig,

I would like to offer you more, but try this for now, .

Seems strange that adding that program would cause such a problem. It could just be a coincidence that the problem started with the addition of Bitcomet. Tried reloading the DRIVER for your network card? Perhaps the card has given out. This just sounds too much like what my daughter's computer went through two days ago, and it turned out to be her network card. (ISP wasn't seeing her card even though the lights on the card appeared to be OK). Fortunately her ISP was willing to replace the card at no cost to her (this is why I'm convinced the card was the problem - they weren't making any money on the deal).
The problem may not be with the torrent client, it may be with what you downloaded with it. What virus and spyware protection are you using?

boyaxksi

You may want to do a google search for keyloggers. You can get All-In-One Keylogger from download.com, which is pretty handy. It even TAKES screenshots every few seconds so you can actually see what someone is doing on your machine.Keyloggers . . . ah dear me.
Be aware that they may know they are being monitored.
And a keylogger will not record everything, only the key strokes entered.
The program suggested by CBMatt seems pretty comprehensive though.
Just have a care, and don't do anything illegal.Ah, yes, please stay away from illegal use of such a program. It's actually quite easy to get caught, and nobody wants that.

Another route to TAKE could be video surveillance. My ex-girlfriend recently bought me a Creative Instant webcam (maybe $30) for Christmas, and if I want to, I can set it up so it will start recording once it detects motion. If you're out of town, it can send you an e-mail and you can get a live feed of what's being recorded. Of course, only if the PC in question is connected to the internet at the time. It won't record the person's activity, but you will at least know who, if anyone, is using your computer and at what time.thank you all guys...the program has now started logging...now let's see what they are up to..Make sure you can legally do this! I think this might be illegal in the UK with the Computer Misuse Act....

Couldn't you just set a password?

Solve : VIEWING WINDOWS EXPLORER THUMBNAILS?

Answer»

I have windows 2000. When in Windows Explorer I USED to be able to view my photos by changing the SETTING to Thumbnails. Now, I can only view older photos that are in my folders. I had to download Kodak EasyShare to be able to retrieve photos from my digital camera. Is it the EasyShare that is causing me PROBLEMS?It used to be fine, then you loaded some software and now it doesn't work? You may have answered your own question. I thought so, too. So I unloaded it & I still could not view my photos. And I could not retrieve my digital photos, so... I gave up & reinstalled it.EasyShare software is a nightmare WAITING to happen...just my opinion. Why do you say that? I liked what I was using before - Kodak Picture software. But, for some reason it quick working to retrieve my photos & I was told that they discontinued it. If I remove the EasyShare software & can find a different way to retrieve my photos from my camera, do you think I will be able to view photos in Explorer again?

Any suggestions you have will be very welcome.

Thank you!
Problem solved!!! I uninstalled the program again. I worked out a different method of RETRIEVING my photos. Everything now works as it should! I'll be sure not to download EasyShare again!

Solve : 2003 Group policy to ban internet use?

Answer»

Hi

I have been trying to find a group policy SETTING that will ban a group of users from using the internet.

I have only a LIMITED knowledge of policy settings so it would take me a very long time to find the correct one.

Thanks in advance

Dave
The way I implemented this in group policy was to DISABLE the connections page
Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Internet Control Panel/Disable the Connections page
Just to stop some of the users disabling the require proxy tick box

I then set the proxy to use an invalid IP address ie Internal network is 192.168.X.Y set it to 10.10.10.10 on PORT 1010
User Configuration/Windows Settings/Internet Explorer Maintenance/Connection-Proxy Settings

This will only stop the casual user from getting on the internet using Internet Explorer. If a user installs Firefox then they may STILL be able to surf the web.

The only other way I could recommend is to install a good firewall. I use a Linux based firewall www.smoothwall.org at home. Then configure squid to require usernames and passwords to connect to the internet.

Solve : Hi-Speed USB Problems?

Answer»

Everytime I plug in my PSP to the USB port it says the deivce can work FASTER if I attach it to a hi-speed USB port when I click on it says there are no Hi-speed USB ports avalible but I just bought A 4port USB 2.0 TRAVEL HUB by Gigaware & it still show That I have no hi-speed USB ports on my PC

can ANYBODY help?

I have windows XP service pack 2 on a Dell Dimension 4300

Your computer must have USB 2.0 ports. If you have the hub connected to a USB 1.1 port, the hub can work no faster than the port. Do you know the specs concerning USB ports on that computer?I believe a 4300 only has USB 1.1 onboard. WHat you need is a PCI USB card which can provide up to four USB 2.0 ports. The other device is not needed.ThanxYou're WELCOME, and stop in again if needed.

Solve : copy an .avi-file to DVD?

Answer» HI,
I have this problem:
I need space on my HD ( OS: Win XP SP 2)and want to move a film in .avi format from the PC to a DVD but when I put the DVD into the DVD reader I get a message :the space on the disk is not enough, please, put in a NEW disk. The film is 1,9 GB and the disk is 4,7 Gb. What is the problem ?
Thanks if you can help me.
Regards

BenedettoSounds like that's not an empty DVD disk...Yeah, put the disk in the drive and go to My Computer and just open the disk and see if there is anything in there. If not, click Properties on the disk and if the memory shows 0% free or something, that means the disc has been used.
You can try to erase whatever is on the disk. I know Nero BURNING Software can do that. Personally, i wouldn't get rid of a dvd disk unless i knew what was on there.
Too bad you can't format disks, that would be weird, lol Only if the dvd says RW you can erase what was on there before .Yes, it seems that the dvd is not empty. Moreover it is a dvd-R so I understand that I cannot do much more.
I will try with another DVD .
Thanks for the help and kind regards to all of you.
BenedettoNo problem...stop by anytime.

Solve : emachine system recovery?

i have an emachine w/ windows xp that was dumped. The computer went through the system recovery ok until you have to restart the computer to finish. once you restart the computer it runs through the "press 'r'" and press f11 to start recovery, after that I get the message that... NTLDR is compressed press ctrl+alt+del to restart.....
at this point we can't do anything.
anyone have any suggestions??Try--->  Here

Also,Do you have the restore disks ?

If you do a zero fill program may work like-->ActiveKilldisknope no restore disks just the system recovery disk. the computer belongs to my brother in law and the computer is now here at my house, he is only 14. I assume that they used the same recovery disk to DUMP the computer because when I went through the disk it will go through a FIVE step PROCESS including formatting the HARD drive and putting programming back in. So you THINK that the hard drive may have a problem with the hard drive.Does this e-machine have a floppy drive?

Solve : menu bar dissapears..?

Answer»

I have a problem with Windows XP.
When I log on, my start menu, taskbar etc shows, but then I get a notification saying that a .dll file is missing (I can't remember what it's called, but I know it's in Win32) and my menu bar simply dissapears, along with all desktop icons. Also pressing the Windows Start Menu button on my keyboard does nothing, and it is impossible for me to run any applications as when I minimise them I cannot re-open them. I have tried using the CTRL-ALT-DELETE to switch tasks, but it says "This has been disabled by your administrator" when I am the administrator :-S

I recently had a TROJAN virus download to my computer through Limewire, and Norton said that it had been deleted (I also used A-squared to scan for viruses which I deleted, and CC Cleaner to check for INCORRECT registry values). I have previously tried to use the System Restore to fix any of these PROBLEMS, but no matter which date I try it fails every time.

Can someone please help? This is my only pc :-/Next time it happens, write down the name of the file it says it's missing. Then search in the microsoft website to see if they have the file available for download. Or google it, and you might find the answer on a site - with step by step. But first, get the name of the missing file and post here again, EVERYONE will try to help you and give their 2 CENTS worth. Good luck!

ASlaterOkay, I just restarted and it's:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fhqlvnws.dll

thanks for helping! Are you sure you wrote it down correctly? I don't recognize that file, and I can't find any reference to it...anywhere. I have a feeling that you downloaded more than just a trojan. Maybe I'm wrong, but to be on the safe side...if you can, update your anti-virus, reboot in Safe Mode, and do a full-system scan. Also...while in Safe Mode, does the same problem still persist?

Solve : Windows could not start message?

Answer»

Hello everybody, Craig here my first post.

My PC was a bit slow so I decided to run Ewido in safe boot mode. Problem I am having is that it will not boot at all now as the following screen comes up "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows SETUP using the original Setup CD-Rom
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I stuck in the CD and nothing happens, is this because I am in safe boot? Anyone help please?

I have XP pro service pack 2

All you did was put in the CD? Did you try PUTTING in the CD and then rebooting? I believe that's what Windows wants you to do.

Try having a read here...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330181Also, you'll probably want to ENTER the BIOS and CHANGE the boot order so your computer boots from CD-ROM first.

If you don't know how to enter the BIOS, hopefully this link will help. Once you're in there, you'll want to enter the Boot Order and move CD-ROM to the top of the list. Generally, this is done with the +/- keys, but it varies from computer to computer. When in BIOS, hitting F1 will bring up a little help menu that will kinda tell you how to navigate.

Solve : Need new motherboard.... help??

Answer»

Im trying to find out which motherboard I need to get for an HP pp2200 laptop....I have no idea what Im LOOKING for or where to start.... anyone have any ideas?

thanks!

-Abby Q. <3You will find it extremely difficult to change the motherboard in any Laptop as they are highly restricted to the Manufacturer and the size Like with like but you are are onto a brick wall here sorry.

increase the RAM add EXTERNAL devices such as drives but Mobo No.arite, thank you! =DAny reason why you want a new motherboard?well, its actually for someone else, but his cat peed on his laptop, and I cleaned it for him, and when he plugs it into the wall, the blue light comes on but it wont boot up.... so instead of buying a new one (which is what I think hes gunna have to do) he wants to replace the motherboard. So, Im just trying to make sure there isnt some way of doing it at home. But I think Im just gunna tell him that hes better off buying a new laptop...

o, and while Ive got your attention how much would it cost anyway for something like that? just so I can compare that with all the cautions and a new laptop.... so, got any price ideas? No way to replace the motherboard, not easily anyway.
It'd be better to buy a new laptop.
As for the price, it depends on what you want.
Size, battery LIFE, graphics, power, storage space, what it will be used for . . . anything from about £200 to £4000 and up (I'm in the UK, so I don't know about US prices if you're over there).yep, thats what I thought, and here is definitely where Im at (states) and thank you for your help, Ill be sure to tell him that. 8-)That's OK.
It's hard being in the UK, I can advise on what's good but not how much it is or if it's a good deal.
So if you want help choosing a laptop, feel free to make a thread about it and I'll help if I am able, as will many other PEOPLE I'm sure.arite, well Ill do that if needed. thank you again! <3You're welcome.
And if you do make a thread, I'll see you there lol.

Solve : window xp doesn't support new chipset?

Answer»

hi... i have recently changed new motherboad with VIA chipset and my Previous one was with Intel chipset.my pc can't boot with new motherboard. So i tried to reinstall window xp, but my harddrive has 4 Partitions. when i boot with windows CD it just showing only c drive. Mean if i install new window i 'll lost all my 4 Partition data. Any help will really greatful.

ThanksMore info on the hardware involved...i find it hard to believe XP does not SUPPORT a VIA chipset here...it sounds more like you have buggered the hard drive somehow.my pc have intel p4 2.8 ghz,80gb harddrive,512 Ram, when i boot it load into safemode then it restart. when i treid to in stall new window it showing partition c: 76123mb and if i delete my partition i 'll lost whole harddrive which have C,D,E,F.

Thanks. and please save me Rest assured. Dr. Patio is on the case. If it is showing 76,123MG. on an 80 G HDD you have probably successfully removed/erased your 4 existing partitions...
Best bet would be to HOOK up that HDD as a slave in another machine and attempt USING a good data recovery program on it.ok if your old machine has an intel chipset and the newer motherboard has a via chipset. have you formatted and repartitioned the drive to reload windows xp.it sounds to me as if you have old driver for the intel on hard drive this is stopping the computer booting up. you may need a FRESH INSTALL.

Solve : Windows 98 Autoexec being overwritten?

Answer»

I recently reinstalled Windows 98 SE on my old HP tower. My final goal is to get the computer to boot into DOS and run a custom autoexec file. However, everytime I revise the autoexec file the computer overwrites the file to the original upon reboot. I've done this before on two other systems and can't remember having any ISSUES doing it. If anyone has any idea what could be overwriting the file I'm all ears. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -JarrettWelcome to the CH forums.

Run us through exactly what you're doing when you amend autoexec.bat

Dusty,
Thanks. Well, I boot into Win98 and run msconfig. Then I modify the autoexec file. I attempt to change the file to this:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T2
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\EAPCI
C:\EAPCI\APINIT.COM
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE

However, windows changes it back to the original file of:
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T2
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS
C:\EAPCI\APINIT.COM
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE

As you can see I'm trying to modify the sound so it works in dos with a game program. So it seems either windows is changing it back or the original audio program. I even tried to edit with sysedit and manually doing it by opening up the bat file, but no luck either way. I haven't tried to edit it in dos yet, but I doubt that will have any effect as soon as I boot back into windows it will change it right back. Like I said I'm stumped. I've done this before and was able to modify the autoexec file to my hearts content with no problems.Have you considered renaming your Autoexec.bat to Autoexec.old, then creating your new file and saving as Autoexec.bat.VMD Sound is a sSound Blaster emulator that you could try...it's an MS self extracting utility for Win NT, Win2k and XP...Buscrew, I have already tried that course of action with no luck. I even went as far as to delete all instances of the autoexec.bat file and create a whole new one. The computer still defaults back to the original two lines in the autoexec.bat file.
The only way I can get the sound to work in dos is to totally disable the autoexec.bat file from launching in msconfig. Then when I get the C:\ prompt in dos type all the lines in manually. I wouldn't mind doing that everytime, but I need the computer to boot into dos, load the sound config, and run an emulation program. Like I said something keeps restoring this file when I restart the machine. I just need to figure out what program or the like is doing it. It's driving me nuts! BTW, Thanks for the help guys. Some info on defining custom config.sys & autoexec.bat files here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=138996 scroll down, also have you tried altering the dosstart.bat file to reflect the changes you want in the autoexec.bat file.

Can't help on what's changing your file back as I've never COME accross it before, when I made changes to the autoexec.bat file i always did it through sysedit then clicked on File/Save and rebooted to the new file. Obvious question but are you saving the ammended autoexec.bat file and rebooting. Quote

VMD Sound is a sSound Blaster emulator that you could try...it's an MS self extracting utility for Win NT, Win2k and XP...
Patio, Thanks for the link on the VMD Sound. However, I have the correct dos drivers for my soundcard chipset and the sound works great when I type in all the configuration at the dos prompt. I just need to get this autoexec issue figured out.
Buscrew, Thanks for the microsoft link. I'll check it out now and see if it has any info that can help me. I haven't tried altering the dosstart.bat file yet. I actually didn't even know there was one, but I'll do some research and see it that is the SOURCE of my woes. To answer your question, YES I save the file then reboot. Changes it right back even before the next bootup. So it seems like it almost does it before shutdown to tell you the truth. This problem has me dumfounded and very interested. I've never ever come across this. I use the MS-Dos Edit utility to edit text files such as Autoexec and Config.sys and never had any problems provided I don't forget to Save the amended file. No error message about an attempt to amend a Read Only file :-?

Hmmmm...Just wanted to update on my progress. The other night I thought about the problem and figured I should just let it overwrite the file. Here is the workaround I came up with.....Since it was overwriting the first two lines in the autoexec.bat and these two lines configured my soundcard I left those in and inserted the next two lines to configure it the way I wanted it. So now my autoexec.bat looks like the one below. It worked like a charm.

SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T2
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T2
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\EAPCI
C:\EAPCI\APINIT.COM
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE

Solve : Error concerning space, but I have 15 free GBs.?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to download a file, which was labeled at 2.46 GBs, and my C drive has about 15 free GBs. Whenever I try and torrent the file, it says i don't have enough free space on the drive.

What does this mean, and how can i free up the space on the drive?More system information?

You might try the bittorrent.com help section. In particular, I'd say the help article titled: Downloading: Error message "Not enough space on disk." might be useful, depending on your OS. Here's a link. >http://support.bittorrent.com/cgi-bin/bittorrent.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=65&p_created=1164154161&p_sid=CSP3rOui&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MiZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWZyZWUgc3BhY2Ugb24gZHJpdmU*&p_li=&p_topview=1If u have many downloads started, the space may not be allocated, however your torrent application predicts that you will indeed run out of space shortly
It COULD be a good thing that the torrent file will not DLoad. sorry about the delay.

im using windows 98, so i dont think my computer uses either of the FAT file systems.

im alright with computers, i just have no idea where to start. If you are running Win98 you are using a FAT file system...to check which one right clik on C: in My Computer and select Properties...yeah, checking properties, i definitely am using the FAT32 file system, which would EXPLAIN my problems.

any ideas on what to do?FAT (also known as FAT16) has the 2 gig. limit. FAT32 does not, so that doesn't explain it.Ok, this time I tried downloading a 600MB file, and it wouldn't download, for the same reason. all that happens is I get an error in bitorrent that says there isn't enough space on the drive. and I'm POSITIVE that I'm sending them to my c: drive, which has much more than enough space.

any ideas?

Solve : Windows XP stuck on startup/only works w/Safe Mode?

Answer»

There was a power outage/surge the other day and now my computer will only start up to the black screen with the blue bar running across and then won't go any further.

I can get into safe mode, and when I try and do a system restore, it goes through the process, but when I try and turn it on again, it SAYS it wasn't able to do the system restore.

My computer has been a BIT more loud lately and occasionally when I started it, Windows had to check the HARD drives but always found nothing wrong with it.

My computer is about 3 years old, and was made by my friends and I.

ANYONE know what is wrong and what I should do? Thanks so muchDo you have a real XP CD to do a repair install?

You can also try the process of elimination.

The first thing to go is usually the modem
on a power surge.

Physically remove it from your computer and
see what happens. It's a computer that a friend built. I'm sure he has the CD laying around somewhere, but I am at college, not home, so I can't pick it up anytime soon.

Would any Windows XP cd allow me to boot up? I know there are serial number contraints usually, but since I am just using it to get some damaged files(hopefully) do you think that it would work?

Also, you might be right about the modem thing, since I can start in safe mode, but not safe mode w/networking.

On another note, since it gets stuck on the splash screen EVERYTIME, I tried the /SOS switch and all that I get is a blue screen instead of the splash screen when I try to start normally. It just says something along the lines of stats of my computer and that I have service pack 2 and 1024 mb mem.

Thanks in advance for your help, I appreciate it.If the machine is louder noticeably now i suspect that the PSU took a hit with that power surge...you should open the case with all power dis-connected and inspect all fans to ensure they are running properly.
You can borrow a known working PSU of the same wattage as your and swap it out to see if this is the case. Quote

Download the free diagnostics from the hard drive maker's site while you are at it.
I have checked in the BIOS screen and one of the fans says it isnt working, but it is spinning. I've got three and the temp of the CPU isn't even over 140.

As for disconnecting pieces, it would be really easy for me since it is custom built and I have easy access, but I have no clue which piece is what and am not comfortabl messing with that stuff.

As for running diagnostics, I cannot access the internet from the computer, so I am unable to download them. The fact that I can't access safemode with networking makes me think there is a networking problem.

I just got a friend's copy of XP, but I can't figure out how to boot from the disc, or if that will even allow me to since it isn't my copy of XP. Anyone care to shed some light on if this will work and how to boot from my CD-Rom drive?

Thanks for all your help so far, and thanks in advance for any other help coming.

*By the way, my computer has stopped sounding like it is running louder than normal Quote

The power supply is easy to find. It is where the power cord plugs in.

Hey guys, Im back again, but this time on my real computer.

My friend somehow got it to work in regular mode and we found that I had recieved an HUGE virus.

I had installed a no-CD crack for Battlefield 2142 like an idiot and it turned out to be a hardcore trojan-sending virus.

Any clue on how I can clean this? It's replicated into tons of different names now and my virus-scanner is constantly catching and either deleting or moving them.Dload and update AVG Anti Spyware...Do Not run it yet.
DLoad Stinger.
Turn off System Restore and dis-connect your internet connection.
Re-boot into Safemode.
Run Stinger.
Run the AVG anti-spyware...let it clean whatever it finds.
When it finishes run Disk cleanup from the Accessories menu.
Re-boot.
Now DLoad install and run Hijack This and post a log in the Virus and Spyware section...Hi, I once had this problem and solved it by just pulling the plug out of the wall and plugging it back in again. Unfortunately I had already rebooted and losty all of my files before I realised this.

Good Luck!

Solve : Excel worksheet half off page???

Answer»

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem. I have excel open and it seems that the actual worksheet has been minimised (even though the main excel window is maximised) and the first two columns of the worksheet (e.g columns A & B) are off the page. Would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks, ljc. This is what I understand your problem is - Excel is maximized, but you have a small window inside Excel, which is your worksheet.
You want the worksheet maximized.
Right?
If so, the small window will have close, minimize and maximize buttons, same as the main window.
Press maximize, and it will go back to its full size.
Does that help? Thanks so much for your response. The strange thing is that there are no close, maximise or minimise buttons on the smaller worksheet window... have you ever encountered this before? So, the upper right corner of your Excel window does not show everything circled in YELLOW in the image below?:

It has the close, maximise and minimise buttons for the main excel window - but not the ones below that in the circle for just the worksheet windowHas it always been this way? If not, when did this start? What version of Excel are you using? When first open a NEW Excel workbook, do you see columns A and B?It is a saved worksheet and it hasnt always been this way. I use it on a weekly basis and last week when I opened it up I found it this way. When I open a new excel worksheet it is normal. I am using Excel 2002 (10.2614.2625) version. It has me stumped! I have tried just clicking on the TOP blue toolbar of just the worksheet hoping that it might maximise it and return it to the centre of the page and have tried swapping between full screen and normal screen view - but to no avail!! It has me stumped! How much trouble would it be to copy everything in that worksheet to a new/blank one and see whether that eliminates the problem?Does your version of Excel have the "Detect and Repair" option from the Help menu of the toolbar?

If it does...make sure you have your Office 2002 CD ready in CASE you need it.

On the toolbar, click Help and then Detect and Repair. You will have the option to restore your shortcuts when doing the repair. Click the Start button. If prompted, insert your Office 2002 CD.

If this doesn't fix the problem...can you tell me if this saved worksheet is a protected worksheet?

Another thing you may want to do, if you haven't already, is to go to the Office homepage and update your version of Office. Again, you may need your Office 2002 CD available just in case you are prompted to insert it during the updates.

Let us know, either way...Thankyou Saviour and Soybean!! I have the problem sorted! I ended up copying most of the worksheets (the ones I could access anyway!) into a new worksheet - just incase and then ran the detect and repair. It worked! Next time i opened it - I was able to move the window back into place! Thanks so much for all the input - I really appreciate it! You're welcome, ljc...

That's what we're here for...and that's what we like to hear.

Solve : Invalid Boot Loader?

Answer»

I have an 80GB HD with 3 partitions 1(2GB),2(20GB),3(58GB). 1 is FAT, 2 is WIN XP & 3 has all the files, everything worked fine. I put in a new primary HD & with the old drive as secondary, installed Linux on the primary & wrote a dual-boot loader. Although nothing should have been written to the Windows drive, something WENT wrong & damaged the MBR. When I try to boot into Windows I GET "Error loading operating system". I tried "fixmbr" from Windows Recovery Console but no luck.

I know all the files are intact because I viewed them with Read NTFS, from a floppy. Also Read NTFS is telling me there is an "Invalid boot loader" on partition 1. Would a Repair Install work & if so how can I backup or clone the drive? I want to get the 80GB working as the only drive in the machine.

Solve : Major problems with Flash Player/Media(Freezing)?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

Here is the deal. I use FireFox as my main browser, and everything is updated. I use IE at times, but FireFox for most everything. I have been running into the problem of watching any type of Youtube/DailyMedia video and having the computer LOCK up during the video. Sometimes it's 2 min. into the video, sometimes its 30 seconds, sometimes I get through the whole video. I have updated my flash players, and java player, and nothing seems to be working. I have even started to run into problems when I will be on another forum, and SOMEONE will have some sort of interactive signature, it MIGHT freeze with that.

It is really becoming a problem, and need some answers. I will try provide any info that is needed to fix the problem.

THANKS in advance. Here is some of my info.

HP Pavilion, Pentium(R) 4 CPU, 2.40 GHz
2.39GHz,512 RAMDLoad and run Memtest on that machine...let it run a few hours.
Anu errors at all mean bad RAM.Still running, at 10139.2 and no errors. What now?

Solve : Programs running to slow?

Answer»

Hi,

I work on WIn XP Pro and the programs open very slowly. Beleive me., its a real pain. I have TRIED fixing it by INCREASING the virtual MEMORY but that has not helped. I have 1GB RAM, which isin't helping of course. What to do?The most important question is what are you using for virus and spyware protection?

You should leave the virtual memory alone. Change it back to the default now. If 1 gig of RAM doesn't get it, you have other issues.Besides the 1GB of RAM, what are your other hardware specs? How FULL is your hard drive? Do you ever RUN Disk Cleanup? Ever defragment your hard drive?

Do all programs open slow? Or, are there particular programs where the problem is noticeable worse?

Solve : Lost files and folders?

Answer»

I can not find some files on my computer. I am running windows XP. I RECENTLY did some cleaning up and deleted or MOVED some old files, user accounts and other things and may have done SOMETHING by MISTAKE. I have done a search of all files and folders and still can not find and of these files. Did I possibly delete an old user account that only had access to these files? Any suggestions?Yes. It sounds like you have inadvertently deleted some files...but without lots more info i'm afraid we can't tell you how to proceed. What other info do you need?

Solve : Un-interupted file copying???

Answer»

I am working on a customers computer, and there Hard drive is bad.

I have resorted to copying every file in small groups (its about 30 gigs so its taking awhile) beacause every other file is corrupt

When i use windows if there is a file that cannot be copied it halts the ENTIRE process

Does anyone know of any fix/program that can copy without STOPPING for un-movable files?

anyone help would be great, thanks.I have also encountered similar problems and would be interested in a solution. Have you tried copying via DOS?Have you tried using a data RECOVERY program? I don't have any suggestions for a good program because I've only used one that's very limited (as far as filetypes go), but I'm sure you could find a decent one. I'd imagine it would also transfer the corrupted files. Then the owner could just go through the files and delete anything that isn't any good. Maybe it's not the best suggestion, but it's all I have. Heh.So far i have only been able to use an application inside the geeksquad tools to move the corrupt things, (and even that freezes)

I have been doing research and trying different apps but nothing gives me what i WANT really.

At this point i am willing to buy the software considering my business is taking off a little more and i get more HDD with bad data that they want back.

If anyone knows any apps. regardless if they cost anything or not please let me know

Solve : Internet Crashes Constantly?????

Answer»

My internet crashes constantly, usually when I'm running torrents. Sometimes an error will appear in EVENT viewer saying DHCP loss the lease to your Ip address and wasn't able to renew it. Lately though nothing comes up in event viewer and my connection GOES down so I am constantly disabling and enabling my connection to get it going again. Do you guys have any idea why it's doing this? Do I need NEW network CARD? Any help would be appreciated? I have hijackthis and have RUN it but i have no clue if any of the listed is harmful or not? What isp are you using? I know there are some out there that frown on torrent downloads and have actually taken steps to screw them up. Does it only happen when you are doing those downloads? If so, that could be a clue.I'm using Sasktel and I don't think they do that because this used to happen to me about 7 months ago then I don't know what I did but it went away for a month or 2 and now it started doing it again about a week ago. Here's a site that might be able to help you out:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/canbroadband

They cover dsl and broadband connections. I've used the US page for information about my isp.

Solve : ftp log in (doesn't want to log in) why??

Answer»

I want to log into the ftp account. The problem is that I can log on some other ftp accounts but that one in PARTICULAR doesn't want to log in.
Someone told me that there could be a problem with the windows XP. Can you help me fix that problem? Can you provide a little more information? What FTP program do you use? What server are you trying to access? Is it possible that you NEED a password?yes does need a pasword and I just open the ftp through Internet ExploreI recommend trying Flash FXP. Does it timeout? Are you sure you are typing in the right address, user, and password?

8-)fffreakI think a good free client is SmartFTP. Just try a few different ones and see what you like best. As for this server you're trying to access...have you been able to access it in the past? Also, have you contacted whoever runs it?

There could be a problem on your end, there could be a problem on their end, or your password might not be valid anymore. It's best to provide us with as much information as you can. And it might help if we had some information about this place you're having trouble with.I have been letting this to time out and now I was able to put the pasword but is still searching and I have a blank page. I will let to time out the page to see what happens.
I did everything was possible with this ftp account.
