Solve : Tower and Monitor are NOT cooperating!?

Answer»

I have a personal computer that my family uses for games, school work... The other day a little box showed up in the right hand corner saying something about not enough power for a usb connection. Then the monitor when off and I haven't been able to get it to come back on. I disconnected all of the usb cables and tried that. Nothing. I PUT the personal monitor on my business computer and the monitor works fine. It has to be something in the tower. Has this happened to anyone else? I live in a very small TOWN and trying to find someone to look at the computer is almost impossible. The tower seems to be working. When I turn it on there are no weird noises and it comes on smoothly. If anyone can offer some advice I would appreciate it. My family is now using my business computer and it's driving me nuts! Thanks, t.l.k.

Hp Pavilion
Windows Home Edition
Monitor: hp Pavilion VX74
Tower: hp Pavilion a705w
Intel
System: pj562AA
Serial: CNC4401C2XThe best thing i can suggest would be for you to remove a side PANEL and CHECK inside that all fans are running properly and that all components including the video card and RAM are seated properly...as always when working inside the tower make sure to remove all power sources and take all ESD precautions.
Check for dirt/dust while in there if it is messy use compressed air to do some housekeeping.
Has this machine been moved recently ? ?Hi, Yep, I have tried all of that. There was some dust bunnies, but they blew out quite easy. No, it hasn't been moved. It's just really odd. The monitor on button comes on green, then goes to yellow and stays there. There is not even a blip on the screen. But I've tried the monitor on another computer and it works fine. Thanks for your advise, t.l.k.If this is an add on video card it MAY have just gone bad...can you try hooking up to the onboard video instead ? ?Way past my computer expertise! I'm not a novice, but I'm nowhere near brilliant at it. I know the basics. If you could explain the steps, I'll follow them to the letter. Thanks a lot for trying to help. t.l.k.I tried putting the business monitor onto the personal computer with the same results. The on light goes green then turns yellow. Are there 2 connections on the back of that machine that look similar for the video cable hookup or just one ? ?Just one. Quote

Just one.

Oh Snap.

___

I'll attempt to be helpful now.
Try unplugging the power source, and THEN holding the power button in for a good 30 seconds or so.

Then plug the power back in, and try turning it on.

Or, borrow a video card from someone and install it.

-rockIf you try a video card, it will have to be a PCI card. That computer has no AGP slot, per HP Pavilion a705w Desktop PC - Product Specifications

Solve : WIN 98 problems reinstalling?

Answer»

Hello, I am trying to re install win 98 on an IBM Thinkpad. I have a boot up DISC and the Win 98 CD. Heres what happens. I load the disc and then install from the cd and when it goes into the actual installing of Win 98 set up this pops up.
"Your computer ALREADY has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup. You need to obtain the Windows 98 upgrade. Message SU0168"
I have just spent the last 4 hours trying to figure this out . Its my 8 year old daughters computer. And lets say that I am about to go nuts if I cant get this working :-/. Do I need to uninstall WIN 98 and then re install it again? If so and how? ANy advice would be greatly appreciated. It starts up in MS DOS. ANd to tell you the truth I really dont know what I am doing except for what the TEch at the her school showed me todo. So any thing would be greatly appreciated. THANK you for your help and advice!!!
TammieFrom the message you're receiving it sounds like you're trying to install Win98 over a copy of Win98 SE (Second Edition). It would be helpful to know why you are trying to reinstall i.e. what problems are you experiencing that makes a reinstall necessary, maybe we can help to resolve these issues without a reinstall.

If not we can point you in the right direction for a reformat and reinstall.Hello, I ACTUALLY figured out the problem just now. I didnt ERASE the win directory in the begining so it wouldnt reload it. But now its up and working. Thank you for responding to my tech problem. You all have been more helpful then the locals here who charge an arm and a leg. The see a blonde coming and start having lauging fits...

Solve : Lost windows!?

Answer»

Hi

I have had a problem with my new Acer Aspire LAPTOP and needed to reformat it. However, after DELETING the partitions and installing windows, I realised I was using the wrong cd- a version of xp professional from another computer. The license key will not work with this version and I do not have a recovery DISK. I cannot access the erecovery by pressing alt+f10, it does nothing. I assume this is because I deleted the partitions.

Please advise me on how I can fix this problem. Am I able to get a replacement recovery disk at all?

ThanksIf you have deleted the Recovery Partition, it looks like you will have to purchase a LICENSED copy of Windows.Immediately contact Acer and let them know what has HAPPENED...

Solve : Backing Up Registry?

Answer»

I have WINxp Home Edition so I don't have the Windows Backup Utility feature which I BELIEVE is included in the Pro Edition only.I have an external hardrive and periodically I would LIKE to back up my registry. What's the best way of doing this?SEE How to Use the Backup Utility to Back Up Files and FOLDERS in Windows XP Home Edition. "The Backup utility is included on the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM in the ValueAdd folder. To use Backup, you must install the utility manually."Can I do a manual backup without using the Windows Backup Utility?ACTUALLY can't you do it by going to, start->run->type "regedit", then right click the my computer drop down, then click export. It should then be saved as filename.reg. Hope that helps.

Solve : I need a firewall. Not zonealarm.?

Answer»

Zonealarm is great.. i love it.. but sadly i must part from it because vsmon.exe continues to use 100% of my CPU when uploading files.. to anywere on any browser.. if somone knows a way to fix this enlighten me. but otherwise is there anything just as good or better for free? This seems to be a common problem with more recent versions of ZoneAlarm. Are you using 6.5 or greater? One THING you can try is...

1. Reboot into Safe Mode.
2. Navigate to C:\Windows\Internet Logs
3. Delete backup.rdb and iamdb.rdb
3. Reboot into Normal Mode.

This will reset the database and hopefully HELP out some. I've heard that DISABLING Mailsafe improves things a bit, but you'll probably want to AVOID to doing that. If the above doesn't work, we'll try something else. The last stable version was 6.1.744, so you can uninstall your current version and install that version. Of course, the included uninstall.exe is crap, so you'll need to do the following (you might want to print this out)...

1. Download 6.1.744. Don't install it yet! And if you don't already have it, download and install CCleaner (don't install the Yahoo! toolbar).
2. Reboot in Safe Mode.
3. Go to Start > Programs > Zone Labs
4. Right-click on Uninstall Zone Labs Security and go to Properties.
5. Next to Target, it should say something like "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe". You'll want to add a space to the end of that and type /clean. ("C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean)
6. Run Zone Alarm and make sure the Load On Boot option is disabled. Close the program.
7. Run the uninstaller (Start > Programs > Zone Labs > Uninstall Zone Labs Security) and OK whatever security alerts come up and click Yes when prompted to delete the files.
8. Navigate to the following FOLDERS and delete them: C:\Windows\Internet Logs, C:\Windows\system32\Zonelabs, and C:\Program Files\Zone Labs. Empty your Recycle Bin.
9. Run CCleaner to clean out any extra temp files and registry entries (you'll need to go to Issues for registry stuff).
10. Reboot into Normal Mode and install 6.1.744.
11. Reboot again if necessary and cross your fingers.

Now, if that doesn't work, then it really isn't worth it and you should start looking around for another decent firewall. It's possible that malware is involved, as I've heard that Backdoor.delf can be troublesome in this issue, so you might want to update your anti-virus (I really hope you have one), reboot into Safe Mode, and do a full system scan. It's also possible that there could be another program interferring and causing this jump in memory usage. Spyware Detector is known for doing this. Anyway...I hope I've helped you in some way. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Solve : Huge format?

Answer»

This is the first time I have posted on a forum, so please forgive any lapse in etiquette.

I have a Compaq Presario 6000 with windows xp. It was running incredibly slowly, taking ten minutes to boot up with constant programme not responding messages, so I tried to get rid of some programmes I was not using. I do not use video games and so deleted Nvidia driver, thinking that programme was only used for games.

My computer now has everything at double size, icons, windows etc. Some windows will not even fit on the screen. I have tried system restore, but each time it tells me it has not worked and that no changes have been made to my computer. I have also tried all possible display settings, and nothing makes any difference.

I can't seem to find this problem on any message board. Am I alone? It is driving me insane. Can anyone out there help? I'm afraid I have very little technical knowledge.

Thank you all in advance,

TaniaGo to the Nvidia site and download the latest drivers.
Download it, but don't install it.
Then remove all trace of the old drivers.
Then reboot.
Then install the new drivers.
Then reboot again.
It should be OK now, if not then just set the display settings how you want them.
Hope this helps. This should solve your display issue but it sounds like you have bigger problems.Thank you very much for your kind reply. You're welcome (assuming you were talking to me).
Is that it sorted then?
Because I agree, as Neil said you have other problems you should try to resolve.
This is the first step though, at least your immediate problem is solved (yes? No?).Thank you again. Did try the driver thing but it did not work, so, in extreme frustration, I rebooted the ENTIRE system - slight terrifying moment when I thought all FILES were lost, but everything is still there, computer looks normal, and is now working at ten times the previous speed. Still don't really know what happened, but am just grateful that I am up and running. Only glitch is that itunes will not open, no matter how many times I download it - I see from other FORA that this is a problem lots of people are having, and am just putting it in the hands of the gods and will keep trying.

Thanks, Tania.Rebooted the entire system?
What does that mean?Oh sorry, do not know correct terminology. Furiously pressed F10 over and over until it all reset itself, then reloaded Works etc, and now it's just as it was before, except, as I said, working much faster and not doing screen freeze, programme not responding etc. It's anyone's guess what happened then.
As long as it's working now, that's the main thing.
Sounds like you had virus problems before, do you have any malware protection now?Have Norton, and Windows defender, and something called regcure, which is a registry cleaner, and I never open attachments. Should that be enough?

That's a good start.
Have a look here for some extra protection.
I recommend Adaware and Spybot, plus a firewall.
See here too, there are links to more programs including firewalls (I recommend Sygate).
Hope this helps you out, and post back if you have more questions. You are incredibly kind to TAKE so much time over my problem. Thank you for your good advice; I shall do all those things you suggest.

I hope you have a LOVELY weekend, and thank you again. You're more than welcome, it's nice to be able to help.
Don't hesitate to post back if you have any more questions.
You have a good weekend too.

Solve : D Drive Disappeared?

Answer»

My brother's pc, running XP is missing its D Drive. We determined the problem to be related to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285910. Roxio was messing things up, disabling the D drive. So I found a program which eliminated roxio off of the computer, figuring that without it, the d drives would not be blocked. But the D drives have not come back.

What I wanted to do was reformat the computer, but without the D drive I cannot boot off of anything. Please help, I've run out of ideas. Are you saying that there is no d drive or you just cant see it? Have you tried booting from the d drive? Have you tried it in MS dos
command prompt to see if the computer can read from it? What about adding new hardware? Have you gone into SYSTEM to see if it is there? Is your cd drive detected in the bios? Have you checked to make sure everything is plugged in where it is supposed to be(i.e. the power CABLE and the ribbon are fully CONNECTED to your cd drive, and the ribbon also fully connected to the motherboard)?

8-)fffreakThe below site if you scroll down has a fix for
missing Cd-rom drive. You download the program
called 'Download Guided Help' it is 123KB.It does a
auto fix for you, just follow the instructions.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/

I've tried that fix from Microsoft, didn't work. The D drive is missing from everywhere - i cant boot off of it, it is not in the DEVICE manager, etc, etc. I have no idea how to fix this one.Is it seen in the BIOS? Let's start there.its listed as ATAPI cd rom in the bios...if that is indeed the d drive. i should also mention the e drive (burner) is also out.does that mean that ALL of your optical drives are non-functional?

Even though I press No" , always apen word in Safe Mode.
How to do please?
I hv reinstall M- Office, and even repair Windows XP Home- my pc OS.
SOS please!

Trustfully,
jmiah15...... By any chance, did you D/L any office updates just prior to this issue starting ?

Microsoft Office Safe Mode allows you to safely use an Office or Office family program that has encountered certain startup problems. When a problem is detected at startup, Office either fixes the problem or isolates it, allowing the program to start successfully.

Could you try and install office on a differant pc to see if the problem is still there ? ( one that doesn't have office on it )

Yes, I installed it in other pc and it works.
No, I didnt d/l any updates.
I have run antivirus already as well.

I am thinking to format my whole pc cos it annoy me.
But dont want to do that if u can help me solve this.

Thanks for your futhur reply.

J-miah
Do an uninstall...again . Then, try reinstalling into another directory other than the default.

Alan <>< Yes Mr. Alan,

I did as you advised me, but still doesn't work. The message I always get is:

Word failed to start correctly last time. Start Word in Safe Mode will help you correct or isolate a startup problem in order to sucessfully start the programme. Some function may be disabled in this Mode.

Do you want to start in Safe Mode.

Even though I press No" , cannot. I have to close Word after open first in Safe Mode cos my answer NO cannot close or do anything.

Help me please.Headache!!!!!
I dont want to format the PC is one issue.

Thanks a lot.

JeremiahCheck this out:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888950

Have you checked the event viewer for information?

"Hmmm ... okay, I stand corrected; I have never seen or heard that message
before. But as for fixing it, let's try a time-honored test. Search your
hard DRIVE for all files named NORMAL.DOT and delete them, then reboot the
computer and try running Word again"

If that doesn't work:

"Probably the next best thing to try is a repair install. If you pop the
Office XP CD back in, it should detect that Office is already installed and
offer to repair or reinstall. Try the repair first. Your documents won't
be touched by the reinstall or repair. "

"You could try a 'Detect and Repair' - Word\Help drop-down menu - should
'Repair' the whole Office installation and has to be worth a try. Not sure
about Office 2002 but there *may* be other options in the 'Programs' menu. "

Try some of the above. If none of those work, back up your stuff and do a clean install of the OS . I know that's what you don't want to hear but SOMETIMES that's the only way to fix a problem.

Alan <>< Quote

Search your
hard drive for all files named NORMAL.DOT and delete them, then reboot the
computer and try running Word again
Definitely try this. Your NORMAL.DOT may be what's causing this problem. Uninstalling Word does not remove the NORMAL.DOT file. Thus, if you uninstall Office and reinstall it, Word still uses the old NORMAL.DOT file as it's default template for a new document. So, find your NORMAL.DOT and delete it. The next time Word is started, it will create a new NORMAL.DOT file.I have done a repair install 3 TIMES already. And also have run detect and repair for 3 times. no result.
Normal.dot files, how to find out please?
I run search, but detect non.

need more help please.

JeremiahIt's probably in "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot" if you're using Windows XP and Windows is installed on drive C. Substitute your actual username for username.

Exactly how did you use Search? It should find the file. Did you select My Computer as a starting point or something else? Are you including sub-folders in your search?Unfortunately, I dont have username folder/files, so how, Please.

Anyway to get NORMAL.dot from run command?

I will be back in this forum only on next thursday.
I hope u all can help me sort out my problem.

Thanks everybody.

JeremiahNo, you can't get NORMAL.dot from run command.

What version of Windows do you have? When you installed Office, did you accept the default location for the install PROCEDURE to install Office?Yes, It is Windows XP Home Edition. I did use the default install place and even use
different place as I was recommanded.
Looks like noone can give me what to do next.
Anymore please?

Thanks

Hopefully your help.
You need to find Normal.dot. Period. When you use Windows Search, begin with My Computer and include system folders, subfolders and hidden files and folders. Quote

Solve : mshta.exe ???

Answer»

I'm running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

I'm trying to free up space on my computer, but EVERY time I go to Add/REMOVE Programs to delete things, I get two errors. The first one says:
"An unexpected error occured.

Class not registered

res://appwiz.cpl/listbox.htc
Line:225"

After clicking OK the program list loads, but when I click a program I get this error
"mshta.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log has been created."

Yeah I have restarted the program several times, as well as my computer. I use avast! antivirus software and I have done extensive scans. It removes one or two things but none seem to help. Any idea of what this errors mean and what I can do to stop them? Any help would be much appreciated.Gee you had me stumped so I researched and got this....File mshta.exe is a COMPONENT of the Windows operating system, It is used for interpreting scripts written in Microsoft Scripting lagnuages. also same eroor for msg block 213238419 & 213238420 & 213238423 & 21343008
The REST of the test is still running

Does ANYONE know what may have caused this to happen? Thanks for all the help
Run the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard drive maker's site.can't get past the BLUE screen to run anything except what is on a cd romThe diagnostics can go on a bootable floppy or a CDROM. This is all before Windows even loads. Thanks but according to Dell -very unhelpful - it is a CMS hard drive and according to the CMS site they don't make a hard drive with my specs. Then try using SeaTools from www.seagate.comThank you for your help. I tried everything and finally did a REPAIR install which maintained my data and brought me back up. I think I need a new hard drive and am WORKING on that next

Hi all
Having problem with PACK bell easynote laptop, had a power cut whilst INSTALLING pinnacle now the machine just boots to windows loading screen then reboots
After DISABLING the auto reboot I now have view of the blue screen of death which reads as follows.
oxooooooo7a (oxe19894d8,oxcooooo9c,oxbc6o8ooo,oxo7b778co)
I assume this probably means something to you guys.

I tried repairing windows from c.d made no difference, there where many files it could not delete or reinstall.
Tried chkdsk reported no problems.

Run the recovery console, logged on to c:windows and run fix boot no difference then run fix mbr no difference

On the logon options it says

1. e:/minint
2. c:/windows
Can anyone tell me what option 1 refers to?
Starting to think format but there are some important file on this machine so only if I have to.
Option #1 refers to the recovery partition setup by the manufacturer...do you have any documentation on that laptop on doing a repair install or have you visited their website yet ? ?Hi patio

No I don’t have the docs for this machine bought second hand a while back.
Pack bell won’t let me in to their site,
I think probably the original owner has already registered this machine and without the original password you can’t get in.
Is there a way of repairing windows from the partition without losing my files?

I have done P.Cs before but with the C.D, you don’t get the X.P C.D with this type of setup so I am a bit lost.

As a last resort I will format and reinstall but not sure how to go about this without a C.D.

I am at the moment trying to get hold of a USB caddy so I can try to recover my files via. My P.C
It's impossible to do anything without your Windows CD. Also, how does a laptop suffer from a powercut? As far as I know a lot of laptops don’t come with a C.D these days, the X.P files are stored on a separate partition on the hard drive but how you access them I don’t know.

Must leave you pretty stuffed if you’re H.D dies suddenly.

I was wondering when SOMEONE was going to ask me how a laptop suffers a power cut, well stupid me didn’t have the battery connected was running direct mains when the power went off.
If you are the original owner companies frequently will sell you a restore CD for a small CHARGE or free. As you are not the original owner I don't think you will be entitle to anything from Packard Bell (much like your website experience). They appear to have such a restore CD rather than a hidden partition as others use.

Everyone needs a real Windows CD sooner or later. In your case it appears to be sooner.

Solve : SMART failure predicted?

Okay so I did a chkdsk and my laptop is runing. I think i had some corupt files from removing the battery from the back. But now when i turn on my laptop i get a black screensaying...
SMART failure predicted on Hardisk O:HTS42128OH9AT00(PM)

Warning: immiatly back up your data and replace your hard drive. A failure may be IMMINENT.

But my laptop is running normally

is that a standern msg maybe that comes on after you do chkdsk off msdos?

or could my harddrive really be shot??? Quote

Warning: immiatly back up your data and replace your hard drive. A failure may be imminent.
Take that warning seriously. If you don't have your data backed up, do so immediately and be thinking new hard drive. See Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T for some good info on SMART.

I don't have a lot of experience with laptops but I'm wondering whether you used improper procedure in removing that battery, which may have caused damage. how do i back up my data??? and how much are gateway hard drives?!?!?

and could my harddrive be bad but yet my computer running perfect?? likenormally.

yes i did remove it the wrong way at frist it wouldnt start then i put the boot xp cd in it and scan disk and it SAYS it recovered alot of problems i did to it but maybe it lost alot of data?

hmm i suck at computer sorrySoybean is right--you should immediately back up your data. Thankfully, your laptop is still running, I got this message and could not get into windows to back up my data at all.
There are alot of ways to back up your files. If you have a CD or DVD BURNER, you can back up your files to a CD or DVD.
You can also get an external hard drive, which hooks up to your computer with a USB connection, and you can back your data up to that
Here is some general info about external hard drives:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-an-external-hard-drive.htm

Good luck.Backup by burning to a CD or DVD, copy or backup to an external hard drive or, for a small amount, to a flash drive.

[Edit: Ah, I didn't see lapprincess' post before I posted.]

A replacement drive does not need to be a Gateway. In fact, your current drive is probably not made by Gateway; I don't believe Gateway makes hard drives. The major hard drive makers are Western Digital, Seagate, FUJITSU, Hitachi, etc., as you can see at Notebook, / Laptop Hard Drives Deals, from newegg.com. If you LOOK elsewhere, be sure to get a 2.5 inch hard drive, since you have a laptop. DESKTOP computers use 3.5 inch hard drives.

Even though you computer may appear to be running normal, if you see that warning everytime you start, again, take it very seriously and be prepared for a total hard drive failure to occur at any time.Am I correct in my assumption that you need to take this to a repair person as you have never done this before? If you have important data that you need to retrieve and no geeky friend to help, that may be the wisest thing to do the first time. Great minds, Soybean, haha.
When my hard drive died, I had no idea who the manufacturer was, so I just replaced it with a Hitachi 60GB one (2.5" is the size you need for a laptop). Here's a similar one to what I got (made by Seagate rather than Hitachi):
http://www.meritline.com/60gb-seagate-momentus-5400-2-5400rpm-ultra-ata-100-12-5ms-8mb-cache-hard-disk-for-notebook.html

I'm not very mechanically inclined, and slightly computer illiterate when it comes to anything having to do with hardware, but with some time and effort, I managed to replace the hard drive myself. Here are some general instructions to give you an idea of the process:
http://www.cmsproducts.com/pdf/driveremoval/510141.0%20(HP(CQ)%20Universal).pdf

Of course, it could be different depending on the kind of laptop you have.
Doing it myself saved a ton of money, but if you don't want to attempt this yourself, places like Circuit City and Best Buy can to the repairs. (GX1-Man posted before I finished writing this).i have a 6 month old gateway mx6441 so it might be expensive huh?

also.. im tring to back up my computer i have some dvd-r 's laying around... that will work.

and i have alot of pictures and songs on my computer will that take alot of disks to put on? and all i really care about are my pictures, songs, my interenet explorer favorites, and some programs

will i have to make one disk my gatway stock prgrams and one disk my pics and my songs and stuff?I would hope that a 6 month old machine is covered by warranty. Try to call the store you bought it at or the manufacturer to see if they can help.forgot to mention that.... i bought it off my friend that just went to collage in france. the warrenty not good for me
Ok, DVD-Rs can hold alot of information. Whatever information you want to put on them is up to you, it will be easy to access the data on them, so it doesn't matter if you put pictures and songs together on the same disk.
I'm not exactly sure how much data one DVD-R can hold, but if you have a few of them, backing up all the pictures (these are usually pretty small files) and songs should be no problem.
:exclamation I'm not sure about backing up programs though. If you have the original software for the programs (like the disk you put in the disk drive to install it), you can just re-install the programs; but this is a question for someone smarter than me.

Solve : formatting C: with xp professional?

Answer»

I received a dell laptop from the school DEPARTMENT a while ago that they ended up letting me keep. However, since I don't have an administrator's password I can't do anything with it. I want to format the hard drive and start over, but I don't have "sufficient privileges." Contacting the administrator is out of the question seeing as they were LAID off. I also don't have the XP professional cd, but I do have the product key.

In short, how do I format the hard drive without an administrator's password? And, is there any way I can re-install windows without the original cd?try the following steps to get in as administrator :
1) from start go to run
2) type in cmd.exe
3) in the comand prompt type in net user administrator *
4) if it doesnt give you an error code (e.g access denied) it will prompt you for a new administrator password.
5) you can access the admins account by pressing ctrl alt delete at the logon screen, then once you enter change your original account type and add it to admiinistrator group.

you cannot install windows without an installation cd , also if you dont have an installation cd dont format. Quote

Pretty sure it's a windows passwordIf it is a laptop password, you are PROBABLY SOL.

Well even if I can't re-install windows I still want to be able to format the hard drive and maybe get another copy or a different OS.Please post the service tag of the machine (it is on the outside of the case) so we can advise further.

Not particularly sound advice as magnets can throw other components out of whack...

To original poster - No magnets. Bad advice.

That's a fairly new machine. They just gave that to you? Here is some info about it. Just input your service tag number:

Of course a magnet's a bad idea. But if someone isn't very computer savvy, they might not realize this.

Solve : Fire wire does not detect camcorder?

Answer»

Just purchased a Dell XPS 410 in December 2006 with fire wire.

PC does not recognize/detect camcorder (Sony TRV-140) when connected USING fire wire.

I "Googled" this PROBLEM and it seems to be a common problem with most camcorders and Microsoft XP Operating Systems.

Device Manager states firewire is working properly.

Tried to solve problems various ways:
Rebooting computer w/ camcorder connected
Used Sony's troubleshooting page advice
Emailing Sony - no response
Checked Microsoft help page
Under network connections/advanced tab, UNCHECK protect my computer

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Did you turn the camcorder on BEFORE attaching it?Yes, the camcorder was on before attaching it.

I also tried plugging the camcorder (turned on) in while rebooting.

Power down and remove the camcorder...do a cold re-boot and SHUT down again. While powered down re-connect the camera but this time leave the power off. Re-boot and see if this changes anything.I will give it a try but my guess from what I have reading on the internet the problem exists with Windows XP.have you installed the drivers for the DCR-TRV140 you can download them from here

It is obvious that I can turn it off, I simply wanted an explaination from some technical knowledge.

I went to the sight and chose the first E-HOW! my web interface froze and would not respond, and my computer has just recovered from a serious error!

I was expecting a technical answer that would give me a little insight as to how my computer works, so that when I learn half as much as you guys I will be independent of causing you all of, "chit-chat" that probably has you thinking I am a real pain !

I am not going back there !!!!!!

I'd rather sit here and wait for a chitchatter to come by or I'll take a chance and pop one of the option buttons.

Solve : windows xp need help asap?

Hey guys i am new to this!! But I need help! I have a gateway laptop. MX6441. 2005. Windows xp. And iv been using it fine for 3 months. I have norton virus and spy sweeper on it so i dont htink i have a virus. Now my laptop froze so i turned it over and unlocked it and took the battery off then i put it back on THINKING it woul drestart... because it useally does. nope not this time i get a black screen saying...
We apoligze for the inconvience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might of causes this. If your computer stopped rosponding, restarted unexpectedly or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders choose last known good confiuration to revert to the most recent settings tha tworked. then you can either rebost windows normally or safe mode or go to good last configuaration. i do them all and it restarts shows a bright blue scren VERY shortly then starts up again and goes to the same black screen

some one please help me my email is or just write back here thanks
Repeatedly tap F8 as the computer is booting to BOOT into safe mode. Then shut down and reboot normally.

If that doesn't work, pop in an XP disc and boot from that, and do a system repair.

Definitely try the first one first. I've had "system repairs" wipe personal data. It blows.

-rocktype the f and b letter key?? or is there a fb key on top of my laptop sorry im bad at computers lol!!

also i read some part of the blue screen it says unbootable driveF-Eight. There should be a line of keys near the top of the keyboard all labeled F+(some number). You should still try tapping the F8 key, but I have a feeling it won't work.

...Because of the Unbootable drive. That's not cool.

Did your computer come with any discs?i bought my laptop from my friend before she went to college in france. she never gave it to me

does unbootable drive mgiht mean i loost alot of my stuff on my harddrive?

and i pressed f8 and i got to windows advanced options menu
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Sage mode with commant prompt

Enable boot logging
Enable vga mode
Last known good config
Directory dervices restore mode (windows domain controllers only)
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failureGood!

Use the arrow keys on your keyboard (up and down) to highlight "Safe Mode" (it will probably already be highlighted). Then press Enter and hope it boots up. If it does, you can do a number of things, but clicking Start>Shutdown>Restart might be a easy beginning.

-rock

P.S.
You could also try selecting "Last Known Good Config", that might get it to boot.

p.p.s.
Chances are you won't lose data on your hard drive.i click safe mode then it goes please select the operating system to start then i highlightsed windows cp media center edition then i get says muti (0) disk (0) rdisk (partition) drivers in command promp

then iget that awful blue screen again and it turns off then restarts

Do you get this error:
Code: [Select]couldn't open disk multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR couldnt open disk multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
Regardless, it sounds like you need to get a hold of an OS disc so that you can do a repair. Ask your friend if they have it, or find someone who does. You need a Microsoft Windows XP Media Center full OS disc.

Until then, there's not a lot I can do. Keep checking this forum for help as I'm not the best help when it comes to booting. My specialty is anything wrong with your computer once it's already started. There are others here who MAY be able to help you more. Also, try selecting "Last Known Good Config" in the menu that you had before. That might work.well turns out that i turned off automatic restart and the blue msg stayed up.. this is what it said
the safe mode didnt work but i turned off automatic restart and this time the blue screen stayed up!!! it says...

A problem has been detected and windows has een shut down to prevent damage.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly INSTALLED. If this is a new installation ask your harware or softwares manufavtuer for any windows updates you might ned.

If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software . Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. Of you nreed to use Safe mode to revore or disable components, restart your computer press f3 to select advanced startup options and then select safe mode

*censored* the bad part about it i knwo no one with a xp MEDIA center disk i probably could find a reg xp disk but that wouldnt work huh?plz help Quote

P.S.
You could also try selecting "Last Known Good Config", that might get it to boot.

Have you tried this? You need to, it could work, especially if the problem stems from a windows update.

-rockokay so i got a bootable windows xp disk and its doing the scan disk now... now i am not home but i left my laptop home scanning ita taking hours so most likely it is fixing my errors because ithink i corupted some of my files. .......... now when this scan is done in mos dos thing ........ do i have to be on my coimputer when its done or is it okay i left it runing the scan and the screen should be there when i get home ( i kept my charger on it)You should be good to go as long as you left it plugged in. Screen should be there when it is done scanning. It might need your input to continue (not sure) so it might not be "done" but it should be fine regardless. Is it a Media Center disc?

Or do you just not know where they are?

I think what Woodman means is that he wants to copy all of the files without copying the folders they reside in.

I could be wrong, Woodman, but I don't think there's a way to do that without manually going into all of the folders and copying the files individually. I don't think you'll be able to do them all at once. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. So you have a collection of folders with files and you want to GET the files from them into one place? There is a trick you can do. I did this using WinRAR.. though I assume WinZIP or other tools should have similar capabilities.

  • Select the folder containing the subfolders and right click it and add it to an archive using WinRAR.
  • Select compression method to store only (unless you actually want to compress them, there is no point doing so. Store only does not compress files but is quicker).
  • If you will be sending the files to another computer without WinRAR select ZIP archive format otherwise it does not matter.
  • Now in the Files tab - this is the trick - select "Do not store paths" in the File paths options. Now click OK to create the archive. Once done, the archive will contain all of the files from the subfolders.
  • Now put this archive where you want the files to go and right click and select "Extract here". Now all of the files will be PLACED in that DIRECTORY, with no subfolders.
  • Delete the archive afterwards if you have no need for it.

HEY presto... that should do the job Well, how 'bout that...someone did prove me wrong. Very good idea, Neil.Neil - Thank you, that's an absolutely brilliant way to do what I wanted and with your instructions I got it right first time using Winzip.

If I lived anywhere near you I'd come round and buy you a pint at your local.

Cheers

WoodmanDon't worry, I'll travel to yours If it involves a pint or THREE neil and i have both been known to do road trips...Hey, quit stealing my free beer.

Solve : Automatic Log-off no longer working?

Answer»

After my first problem was fixed so quickly and easily, I thought i would try and get an answer to problem number 2. I use xp pro and have 3 users, me, my WIFE and my daughter. Up until about 3 weeks ago, if any of us was logged on and walked away without logging off, the PC would revert to the user log-on screen after a period of inactivity. The screen would go blank and when you wanted to go in again you had to logon. Now, when you WALK away the screen goes blank but the last person using the PC is still logged on. I wanna revert to the other scenario. Can you tell me if this is a Windows thing or do I need to get into the BIOS?? TIA for your helpIt is strictly a Windows thing.Ok...... so how do I fix it pls??As I see it, this issue is easily resolved by going into desktop properties. Go to the screen-saver tab and click on power settings. While in that window click the advanced tab and check the option that reads: prompt for password when computer returns from standby.
--
Desktop properties > screen-saver tab > power settings > advanced tab > check prompt for password
--
In my EXPERIENCE that reverts it to your desired setting. Those settings are already in effect...... it still COMES back to whoever is logged on, not the logon screenAnyone else have any other suggestions??

Solve : Media Player 9 won't play audio on certain mpegs?

Answer»

Hello,

I've got a strange problem with WMP 9. The other day, I downloaded some AVI files (USFL clips from thisistheusfl.com). They wouldn't play, so I downloaded some codec pack. After RESTARTING my computer, the AVI files would play, but now some of my MPEG files play without sound. I UNINSTALLED the codec pack, but the files still play with no audio. Microsoft says to DOWNLOAD WMP 11, but I'm reluctant to download a NEW version when the old one has worked fine until now. I'm running XP. Any ideas? Thanks.Download Microsoft codecs from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx

I hope they restore the damaged group in your system. Quote

Where did you download the codec pack mentioned in your original post? What protection do you have?

This was really stupid. I don't remember where I downloaded it (maybe free-codecs.com) or what it was called. I have AVG 7.5. Thanks.Free-codecs.com seems to check out with SiteAdvisor, so if that's where you got it from, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Did you download the K-Lite Codec Pack? If not, give it a try and see if it helps. If you're still having trouble, you just might have to update your PLAYER.

Solve : Windows XP only boots halfway then restarts?

Answer»

My wife's computer gets to the windows xp splash SCREEN where the loading bar is going then immediately goes back to the bios startup then gets to the splash screen again and does the same thing repeatedly. The hard drive and all other internal hardware is working fine from a visual and audible standpoint. Please help with any advice.Have you tried Safe Mode? Start pressing F8 over and over so that when the Bios screen ends you are clicking F8. If you get in choose the option for System Restore. This error may occure for various reasons, if SafeMode doesent work:
Have you expirenced any power outtages LATELY, or do you use the FAT32 file system?
What antivirus software do you have installed?Sorry for hijacking your thread, but I'm having a similar problem. There was a power outage/surge the other day and now my computer will only start up to the black screen with the blue bar running across and then won't go any further.

I can get into safe mode, and when I try and do a system restore, it goes through the process, but when I try and turn it on again, it says it wasn't able to do the system restore.

My computer has been a bit more loud lately and occasionally when I started it, Windows had to check the hard drives but always found nothing wrong with it.

Anyone know what is wrong and what I should do? Thanks so much. Why don't you just start a NEW thread rather than confusing everyone with the hijacking?Sorry about that. I didn't want to add to all of the clutter and since they are similar problems I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. Sorry again.Although the problems seem similar and the solution may be the same that is not always the case and also people are not clear who is being addressed with a response. Clutter is preferable over CONFUSION. I forget how to do this, but there is a way to disable restart on system error. That will at least allow u to read the error message, and MAYBE figure out whats wrong in particular. I think this is likely what is happening.

During startup, hit f8 (repeatedly) until you get to the screen that gives you startup options. Here, choose the option of booting with Last Known Settings that Worked. That may get you rid of the errors you are probably having

SControl Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Startup and RECOVERY ...uncheck "automatically restart system on errors"...

Solve : Booting problems-keeps restarting?

Answer»

Hey guys i accidentally pulled the plug from the socket (wall) and i get the usual 'windows could not start properly' message and the three links-safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with BIOS, last working config (or something) and start windows normally, i try enter any of these, it gets to the windows loading page then restarts and goes back to the 'windows could not start properly' menu, no matter how many times i click any of these they do the same thing over and over again.

any help would be much apreciated, thanks in advanced
When you see the boot menu with Safe Mode as ONE of the options, try choosing Last Known Good Configuration instead.Tried does the exact same thing I assume you have windows XP. Try installing the Recovery Console and using the fixboot or fixmbr commands

Further info here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654Two other things we can try:

1. Figure out why the computer won't start.

2. Do a repair installation (i.e., reinstall Windows).

To figure out what the cause might be, write down the stop error code on the blue screen that appears when you try to start Windows (it will be a code that begins with 0x and ends with EIGHT numbers or letters). Let US know what that stop error code is so one of us can look it up for you.

To do a repair installation, you will need an actual Windows XP installation CD (but not a system restoration CD that you can make with a Dell or HP computer, for example). Here are the instructions for doing a repair installation:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

You might lose access to some files (documents, music, IMAGES, etc.) after doing a repair installation.

pcdoc4christ, There is no error code, but i will try re-install windows, thanks for all your help guys, ill be in TOUCH soon to tell you the results

As to the My Computer issue go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy...whenever i type sfc, the cmd window pops up for LESS than a second and goes away.. nothing happens. He wants you to type in the whole "sfc /scannow" in the command line, including the space. You may need to open a Command Prompt screen first and then type in sfc /scannow. That method avoids the quick disappearance. OK Start / Run type in cmd and hit Enter...
at the prompt type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...I had this happen after a loss of power - TOOK out one of my hard drives. This caused the overall system to slow down and My Computer took forever to appear.

Try looking in your BIOS (usually DEL or F2 at bootup) configuration to see if it recognizes all drives connected, if not you may want to try reconnecting the missing device or try another cable if you have one.

Might try also to boot only with the OS hard drive plugged in and then verify if My computer acts any better. If so, your system is having trouble SEEING the disconnected drive.

I have also seen specific ports fail on the motherboard (specifically after a power loss), might be worth trying each one at a time to see if problem goes away or not.

Hope that helps Quote

Yes, it´s possible that this evil can be made cause the BIOS. One time it matters to me with a little cut of electric energy. In this case, nor F2 nor DEL enable me to go into my BIOS, and the screen showed a error messaje that " don´t find NTRL" (a lot of explanation, yeah!).

I might to get my other PC and go to the big NET for information. And I read a lot of pages about NTRL, and afterwards the best solution, get out the BIOS battery, count from 0 to 10, and get in the BIOS battery, and the error and problems dissapeared.

Try this if you can´t go into the BIOS settings and if not possible or don´t know how, open your PC and get out the battery for ten seconds, put it into again and try to start and test the My PC search.

Greetings.

HARLEQUIN.
And now we have gone from bad to worse......taking out the battery is the same thing as loading defaults in the bios, except for the fact that taking out the battery resets the system time. It's ment for situations where your system doesn't even make it past the self-check stage (the beep UPON start-up, right before the bios options) so you can't even get a chance to get into the bios. A lot of the time if you can't even do that, one of your big 3 (RAM, Motherboard, Processor) is already fried. Overclocking is a terrible thing ... at least if you've got a newbie sticker beside your name like i do

P.S. Most manuals etc will recomend you take out the battery for literally hours, but really the ammount of time you need is closer to 5 to 10 seconds (I'd recommend 30 seconds to be on the idiot-proof design side). And now from bad to worse to overclocking....

pt, Harlequin and lasherz let's keep the diagnosis at a realistic level and move step by step.

JP ........ Why have you not D/L SP2 ?.......... If my memory isnt failing me you said you have a legal XP/SP1 Home cd ........
and yet you are still grasping at STRAWS trying to get SP2 ....... If you machine passes the WGA test then your good to go ...if it doesn't, go out and purchase one and most of your issues will go away .

BTW , the article you are refering people to was written in 2004 ...... Some of the things mentioned in there have changed .

dl65 dl65,
You are up on things, I will say that, I did not mean to be misleading, . . I did D/L WSP2, but I am having issues as stated,
I have found out that the updates, that have been installed are not active I have contacted both AOL and MS, and am now waiting for some feed back, I can tell you I did go to the MS D/L site and the first thing as I remember they do a search of your computer to determine what critical upgrades they will reccomend, I did that and down loaded presuming that I was going to receive the SP2 D/L, I was sure that it was down loaded.

I do know that in A/R there is a list of Security (correction), Updates for Windows XP, and updates for Windows XP, and a long list of Windows XP Hotfixes, and a single Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q819696.

I have hesitated to do another download from MS for this, and have been trying to get someone to understand this.

I searched WGA in CH Dictionary but could not find it. I'm not sure what BTW is either.

I will delete the previous reference.

Is it possible that the updates I am seeing are not part of the SP2 download and that the D/L somehow did not happen ?

Jp

Jp....... Again , if my memory serves me , I told you about the "Q819696. " back in Jan......... That doesnt mean you have SP2 installed .......

There would have been a list of all the updates for you to view and to select which ones you may not have wanted ........ was SP2 on the list ? ( If you tried to D/L it and it failed for any reason, it will show up in the update history as having failed .)

....please explain what you mean by all the updates are not active .

dl65 dl65,
I have just received an em from , asking me for a screenshot of winver, I sent it although it stated Version 5 SP1, . .I also sent him a recent Hijackthis log.

I recall the initial D/L and I know I would have chosen, not to select, as I would not really have known which to choose, I figured if they scanned my computer, what I was going to get was not going to hurt.

In any case something went wrong, it may have been that the computer disconnected, during the D/L as I have had issues with a modem selection at times, and I may have checked A/R and saw the updates and thought that they were upgraded, this is also being straightened out. apparently the on board fax, and the upgraded aol version from 7 to 9 and the printer was causing an over ride possibly a call waiting issue that causes the internet connection to close, and so I, will get compaq to detail the modem set up as I am also installing a new printer, multi function and this will take a day or two, but it is going to get fixed here pretty soon.

I do recall you mentioning the systems restore on and off I will go back and read the post, I know it is an important issue.

Thanks much.

Regards,

Jp

Solve : To Logon as an Administrator?

Answer»

I am presently installing software for a PIXMA MP180 multifunction printer.

I need to disable start-up features to prevent inter-reaction with AOL security ware and spy and malware previously installed.

When following the instructions below ;

It may be that you have another application blocking the launch of the
program. The first thing to try is rebooting your computer without your
normal startup applications running. To do this, follow the procedure
below:

1. Click Start.

2. Click Run.

3. Type MSCONFIG and click OK. The SYSTEM Configuration Utility will
appear.

4. Make a note of which startup selection your computer is set on. If
your startup selection is set to Normal, switch it to Selective Startup
by placing the radio button dot next to Selective Startup.

5. Uncheck the box next to 'Load Startup Items'.

6. Click the Apply button.

7. Click on the Services tab at the top.

8. Place a check mark next to 'Hide all Microsoft Services'.

9. Click the Disable All button.

10. Click Apply.

11. Click the Close button.

12. Windows will prompt you to restart your computer; click Restart.

I encounter a problem a message box appears with the following message;

Systems Configuration
An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to CHANGE a service, You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make specified changes.

I have been instructed by onboard MS WXP H&S the following;

To start a program as an administrator
In Windows Explorer, click the program executable file that you want to open.
PRESS and hold SHIFT, right-click the program icon, and then click Run as.
Click The following user.
In User name and Password, type the Administrator account name and password that you want to use.

I have not been able to sucessfully execute this since,

I'm not sure precisely that I am in Windows Explorer,
what I did was, I went to Systems Configuration Utility, but could not find an icon to click ?

Will appreciate your advice.

Jp

I now believe from the following that I am in Windows Explorer
but as in the last post, is the executable file the System Configuration Utility ?

In Windows Explorer, click the program executable file that you want to open.
Press and hold SHIFT, right-click the program icon, and then click Run as.
Click The following user.
In User name and Password, type the Administrator account name and password that you want to use.

JpJp ........ if you go to the control panel and then set it to display the classic view......... Does your name appear as the computer administrator ? look at the scrsht .........

dl65 dl65,
Yes, when I click on user accounts I am listed as Computer Administrator.

JpJP ...... ok ....Then you are the system admin.
Then here's what to try:

Have the installation instructions in front of you.
the instructions probably suggest disabling any anti virus applications .... So go off - line and disable all anti virus programs that you may have installed.

Now then, just follow the installation instructions exactly as they are listed .
When you have the software and the new hardware installed , you may safely turn back on all the AVs you had disabled ( turned off)
Now reboot your MACHINE and the install should be completed .......
Please do the print test to be sure it's printing ok and then test the scanner.

dl65
dl65,
O.K., I know how to disable these, the way those prvious instruction state, but as you say, disable, . .
but,
please tell me how I will find these and what procedure will I use to disable them ?

JpJp ....Disable means to turn them off ........ look down in the lower right corner of your screen ...by the clock.....do you not see it icons of your running anti virus programs ...... right click on them and turn them off .... ( it might say quit ,disable or quit )

dl65 dl65

Will Do,
I'll post results after Installation.

Thank you !

Jpdl65,
EVERYTHING seems to work fine !
I don't mind learning something new, I only wish I could remember what it was.

Thanks Much !

Solve : Computer will not get out of the BIOS screen?

Hello my computer will not get out of the black BIOS screen where it tells you the keyboard is pluged in and it will not go to the screen other when i PRESS F2 also..Its stuck...I think the hard drive is done. If it is how can i get the info off of it so i can get another hard drive and place the info on it?

And when i buy another hard drive will i have to buy windows XP again?

Thanks
RossThe best way to retrieve the data off of that HDD is to hook it up as a slave drive in another working desktop machine preferably with a burner so you can burn what you need to CD/DVD.
While you are waiting for your new HDD DLoad and run the manuf. HDD diagnosis on that HDD.
If it passes then when you get the new drive simply use the manuf. utilities that SHIP with the new HDD to "clone " the old drive to the new one and you should be good to go...
Depending on the old drive's health as determined by the diagnostics you can decide whether to use it as a second drive for extra storage.

Since you have come close to losing your bacon this time AROUND now would be a good time to develop and STICK to a good backup strategy.

I recommend Acronis True Image which makes images of all your data and can RECOVER from the current situation in less than 20 minutes as opposed to re-installing everything all over again...

The best deal on it right now is thru newegg.com ( Kudos to GX1_Man ! )

p.s. i'd also start looking for your XP CD right now in case you need it...

Look in Explorer to see if winword.exe is still in Program Files. If it is you may need to reset file associations. If you don't see your documents then you have other serious issues.

Solve : New Motherboard + CPU = Ridiculously Sluggish?

Answer» AMD Athlon 64 4000+ CPU
Foxconn 761GXK8MB-RS motherboard
Corsair 2x512MB RAM
Sapphire RADEON X1950 XTX 512MB graphics card

Windows XP Pro with SP2 and fully updated in every respect

I bought the aforementioned motherboard as part of a double pack which also included AMD's Athlon 64 4000+ CPU. The two items of hardware were installed swiftly and correctly, replacing the two older items and a clean install of Windows XP was thusly undertaken.

The first thing I did upon the initial bootup to the desktop (which I noticed was very fast) was pop in the included motherboard CD to install the necessary drivers. The menu instructed me to install each of the supplied drivers in sequence. This I did, with the exception of not installing the SiS RAID, VGA, DirectX 9.0 and USB 2.0 drivers.

The former driver was not essential according to the included manual, so I left it out. The VGA driver failed to install due to an error message complaining that the relevant device was "not detected". DirextX 9.0c I installed manually via a burned copy of the latest installation file I made prior to the reinstall, so as to ensure I have the very latest version. I have Windows XP, therefore I opted to enable USB 2.0 support manually.

The problem is that since the installation of the drivers (I suspect the IDE chipset driver is the culprit), my computer is remarkably slow for such a high-end machine.

From switching on the power button to the desktop appearing, the overall time it takes to fully load up is just under three minutes. The WinFast splash screen at the very beginning of the startup process hangs for about twenty seconds, and the "Loading Windows XP" screen with the horizontally roving blue bar under the icon takes just under two minutes to complete its load.

Also an annoyance is the lack of speed from within Windows, once everything has loaded. Programs such as Internet Explorer and games take a while to load (about five and ten seconds, respectively). Perhaps the most irritating flaw of all is that the computer MOMENTARILY freezes for about half a second every FULL second.

This particular problem is easily witnessed when I slowly and smoothly move my mouse from one side of my desktop to another (moves, stops for a split second, moves, stops for a split second etc). The freezes are all at very regular one second intervals.

It isn't just the mouse that freezes, THOUGH - the whole computer locks up too during this process. For instance, movement in 3D games is jerky and renders the games unplayable and virus scans take about twice as long as they should due to a short half-second pause every second.

This does not happen constantly. Usually it only makes its presence known when there is at least two programs running that require substantial resources. As of typing this message, I have Comodo Personal Firewall Pro and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 running. Even at this very moment, as I scroll up to view the first PARAGRAPH of this message, there are two pauses in the scrolling action.

I have Service Pack 2 installed and also every single essential update for my copy of Windows XP. My graphics card drivers are up-to-date and they have also been installed correctly. There is no chance of them conflicting with others as my hard drive was formatted completely prior to the fresh install of Windows XP.

It seems to me that the installation of the IDE driver for my motherboard (off the supplied CD) has impacted on my computer's performance greatly. Worth noting is that my current system is slower and more sluggish than my previous one, which included an Athlon 3000+ processor and a very basic Gigabyte motherboard, along with a 128mb graphics card (my current card is superior - see top of message).

If somebody could provide me with any pointers which indicate what might be the problem here, I would be very grateful and more than willing to cooperate by trying every solution/method described in a reply.

Thanks for your time,
Jonathan Storey.Go to device manager --> IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers, and right click all of them and look in the properties sheet.
Ensure that DMA is enabled on every entry there, under Advanced Settings --> Transfer mode.
Also, enable DMA in the BIOS if it is not enabled already.
It could also be a virus - what protection do you have?
How is it in safe mode? Thanks for the reply.

All three of my controllers have DMA transfer mode enabled, and oddly enough I could not find any mention of DMA in my BIOS anywhere. I could be wrong, of course but I had a thorough search for about five minutes and could not seem to find any trace of it.

I have Avast! Antivirus Pro and Ad-aware Pro/Spybot S&D running on my system currently and all three were run the day before yesterday, immediaterly after installing my drivers. Obviously I won't dispel the possibility of a virus, although I find it very unlikely I have one.

Safe Mode behaves in the same manner as standard, although I notice the freezing is less common. It happens in Safe Mode only when programs are loading. In normal mode it occurs both when programs load and when they run. This freezing even happens when nothing is running, I have recently noticed.Sounds like it's not down to malware to me.
In the BIOS, DMA can be hard to find.
It may not even be there.
In mine, I go to settings, then select the drive and choose DMA transfer mode.
Like I say, it may not be there, don't worry about it.
Safe Mode is usually a little slow, but the fact that it freezes less in safe mode suggests it is something you've done or that loads.
Can you post a list of what runs at startup?
Go to Start --> Run --> type msconfig and press enter, then choose startup.
What is checked there?
And do you have the latest Windows updates?Calum,

Thanks for the help. I've just unexpectedly spent a fortnight in hospital, so I hope it didn't appear rude that your response to my problem was not recognised.

Anyhow, I took the machine to a local computer shop today and was told that my power supply was to blame. The problem was with the video only, as music was playing fine, and my monster graphics card could not cope under the pressure of a mere 300W PSU. I've got a new one installed and everything seems to be okay.

The only thing is... is it possible that I have damaged/degraded the overall performance of my graphics card by running it for about a month with an insufficient wattage (450 watt plus was required)?

Once again, I really appreciate the feedback. Quote

300 wats! Ouch! That is why it is important to include ALL details about a machine when seeking insight into a problem. The power supply is often neglected in an upgrade, or an "el cheapo" is used which can damage other components.

Only time will tell.

Only time will tell.

Oh God, don't say that.

I'm in a state of threatening paranoia, believing that my games are performing not quite as fast as they would with a brand new and untouched model of my graphics card.300W is very low for such a highly mentioned machine. You would be much better off with a 450+ at least. 500+ with a bulky video card (or SLI/crossfire). Not saying you need to drop everything and run to the store, but I would never rely on a powersupply included in a case. My personal favorite is Antec. But go to Newegg.com and search around, they've got some awesome reviews about all of them. Then TRY your luck in the store, since high end powersupplies are a heavy thing to ship (the quality of a powersupply can be told, in most cases, by the heavier it is the more quality). Either way you get it, I'd recomend the upgrade. Quote

That's fine, glad you got it sorted and thanks for posting back.
That graphics card needed a much better PSU, where did you get that PC from?
Your graphics card will probably not have been damaged by running it with an insufficient wattage, don't worry about it too much.

I'd say it should be OK, as long as the PSU you had was good quality.
So just keep an eye on it for the next few weeks/months, see how it's going.
If you think it's not performing as it should, Google for benchmarks of the card and compare.
lasherz - they already have a new PSU, so they don't need a new one.
Nice post anyway though.

I have to unplug everything (except power and monitor) and it will load. then I can plug it all back in and start to use it. does anyone know what the problem could be?

windows XP, service pack 2, started happening about a year ago. i use spybot and ADAWARE.

Solve : Fatal Errors everywhere - please help!?

Answer»

Finally decided to buckle down and record some of the errors I've been getting. note: these are not all of the errors I've been getting, only the ones that I've gotten within the last 2 hours of fiddling around.

My System specs, first off, are:
Processor: AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ san diego version
Motherboard: A8N32 SLI Deluxe (Wired network version)
R.A.M: Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1024 mb (dual channel 512's). Not quite sure on the timing.
Video Cards: Nvidia e-GeForce 6800GS 256mb GDDR3 Evega (X2)
Harddrive: 250gb ATA 150 (Sata 2 I believe)
Soundcard: Soundblaster Audigy 4
Power supply: 550 watt Antec dual fan, very nice
Other: Junky 40 gig HD, two fairly junky DVD burners, floppy drive etc. Using the onboard network card from the a8n32 for it's quality (one of the two onboard network ports). All other onboard devices are disabled.

The problem all started while playing Everquest. At first it was a Fatal Error from Vol_snap.sys (disabling Sound drivers didn't help) and only when I was in a loading point in the game. Also, not very frequent. As I continued to ignore it, as it wasn't all that bad, I started to get different errors from random drivers, some not even in use at the moment. All while not in load screens. Now I can boot up about one in 3 times if I'm lucky, and any game activity or downloading is out of the question without a fatal error reboot each time it's tried.
I tried it out with a few other games, like Dark messiah, Halflife 2, and did some tests on music (which has stopped working).

Starting from about 2 hours ago:

1. While at standstill on desktop (tray loading: Steam, Google updater, AIM, AVG, Windows Firewall, and sound drivers)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
***STOP: 0x00000000A (0x000000000, 0x000000002, 0x000000001, 0x8051e106
Memory dump starts

2. Loading up Dark Messiah (processes for it had taken place, but no window yet)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
***STOP: 0x000000050 (0xf10c6c80, 0x000000000, 0x805437b2, 0x000000000)

3. Blinked an error while booting, right when windows would take over.
Got past it after that and was able to move some files around on sata drive. (operating system is on the junky harddrive).
Dark Messiah Multiplayer was unresponsive and didn't even bring up a process.
Device manager is clear of driver/device errors
Music Unresponsive, no sound output.

4. 5th try getting a song to play with windows media player 10 I got:
(unerror-marked)
***STOP: 0x00000008e (0xc-------5, 0x80620302, 0xb938dc40, 0x000000000

5. System Restore did nothing except disable my sound permanently it seems

6. Clicked on Internet explorer and after loading proxy settings it immediately flashed a fatal blue error by with no memory dump so I couldn't possibly read it.

7. Went to play another music file and got:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
***STOP: 0x00000008e (0x0c0000005, 0xbf82d787, 0xb915b7f0, 0x000000000
win32k.sys address bf82d787 base at bf800000, datestamp 41107f7a

8. Computer ran a Video Stress Test from halflife 2: the lost coast perfectly until freezing about 10 seconds through. Computer itself wasn't frozen but couldn't get out of halflife's full screen so was forced to restart again.

9. (last one) I think I was getting online
AN_ATEMPT_WAS_MADE_TO_WRITE_TO_READ-ONLY_MEMORY
STOP: 0x00000000be (0xf1eece0c, 0x1722b121, 0xb91e0c70, 0x000000a1)
ctac32k.sys address fleec0c base at flec8000, datestamp 42b34640

Alright guys, hope that's enough info to give a narrowed search on the problem. So far I've got my finger pointed at the harddrive, RAM, powersupply, motherboard, software, and windows... anything would help, never dealed with anything with fatal errors except for a RAM issue with my last computer. (hoping to not reformat my harddrive unless I have to, since windows is a bugger to convince that you had to reformat so you don't loose your copy's 'legalness').

If you need anything else feel free to post here / E-mail me at Here is what MS says about stop 0xA errors:

"Stop error 0x0000000A (Stop 0x0A) indicates that there was an attempt in kernel mode to touch pageable memory at too high a process internal request level (IRQL). Typically, this error occurs when a driver uses an incorrect memory address. Other possible causes of this error are an incompatible device driver, a GENERAL hardware problem, and incompatible software."

In other words: If you added a new hardware device, a hardware item inside the computer case is failing, or you have installed an incompatible program, that might be the cause.

You can read more about this stop error when you click on one of the links at this Web site:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=0x0000000A+site%3Amicrosoft.com&btnG=Search

The place i would start is the Everest program. Boot your computer to Safe Mode (pressing F8 during startup) and use the Add/Remove Programs applet of the Control Panel to remove it.

If you cannot get to your desktop in Safe Mode, choose the Last Known Good Configuration on the boot menu instead. If you can get to the desktop then, uninstall the Everest program. If this does not work, it might be that your hard drive, video card, motherboard, or something else is going bad and needs to be replaced.Yes, I see. However, the problem with deleting the everquest program is that System restore already set back the update. I set it back to January 28. At that time I didn't have the problem at all and since I restored to the point I haven't bothered re-updating everquest files. Also, as far as I know, Everquest has no activity or say in the system start-up, or the way it runs unless it's running at the moment. Unless you still find REASON I'd rather avoid the 3 hour download heh.

Hopefully it's not hardware. When I get access to another harddrive I'll try a clean operating system to decifer software vrs hardware. Until then more suggestions are always nice to have. Quote

...The problem all started while playing Everquest. At first it was a Fatal Error from Vol_snap.sys (disabling Sound drivers didn't help) and only when I was in a loading point in the game. ...

I did a google for vol_snap.sys and came up with nothing. That tells me you either spelled it wrong, or no one has ever had the same problem you have had and lived to tell about it , or one of the many games you downloaded has a home-grown virus or Trojan horse that is using the vol_snap.sys file in its efforts to infect your system, or steal your personal information, or take over your computer.

You can try reinstalling Windows:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

Make sure you read the info at these links carefully before you reinstall.

I'd recommend you use only games you purchase in a reputable store from now on.None of my games are downloaded, however, Everquest is a MMORPG so I get UPDATES from Sony.. but I would hope I can trust them to not infect me. Also official packs for Dark Messiah and Steam updates for Halflife 2, other then that I don't download anything non-legit from the internet. Ubisoft, Valve, Sony.. I severely doubt that's the problem.

Sony - King of the Rootkits. I would never make that assumption. Sounds like a wipe and reinstall is in order here

Alan <>< It doesn't seem that sony is the problem since the 12,000 other people playing the game haven't had trouble as far as I know. However, yah I'll most definately need a wipe. At this point it's in a boot loop and I'm on my secondary computer, which, sadly can't play any game past quake 3 heh. I get my window's disc tomarrow, along with access to some blank harddrives so hopefully that fixes it. I'm quite certain that it will.

Well thanks for the input guys. Have a feeling this will be resolved by tomarrow. Quote

The driver might be cheesy, but it is still a legitimate Windows driver:

http://www.file.net/process/volsnap.sys.html

It might be the driver has become corrupted and doing a repair installation of Windows will replace it. You would not have to reformat with a repair installation (see my link in the previous reply).

Alright, finally resolved. Problem turned out to be the RAM. Strangely when I switched out the sticks before I still got a fatal error. Turns out that the error I had gotten at that point was a minor game (video) glitch that was fixed instantly upon reseting.. my luck that it happened at that point I guess. Figured it out with a mem test (to make sure). Sure enough 55% came round in the test and got an error on every sector after that. Took the second stick out again and everything ran well again... dispite it being slow from low amount of RAM now.

Best program in the world = Ultimate boot disc. It gives you not only a bootable windows disc that's not illegal, but also allows you to run numerous system checks right off the CD, including memtest, scandisk, disc defrag, and alot more.

Going to go activate the warranty. Thanks for the input guys

Yeah it is probably the one that says OPERATING System on it. Don't WORRY, the CD will not format your hard drive unless it asks you and you click OK to allow it to do so. If for some odd reason it asks if you want to reformat or reinstall Windows, click No or Cancel.

Solve : emergency! pc not starting in safe more or normal!?

PC OPERATING system: Windows XP Professional Edition (lol not home sorry 'bout that)

My computer locked up yesterday and I had to hard boot it. When I rebooted it back up it GOT past the screen where it says windows xp professional and instead of GOING into the choose user screen all you see is a black screen with the mouse pointer. No hotkeys work and the only thing that you can do it do is a hard boot. When it boots back up it gives you the thing about safe mode, so it must not be getting past the point where it considers it to be a successful boot. When choosing "last known good configuration" it restores but it is no good still. Booting into safe mose gives you nothing more than normal mode except for things saying safe mode in the corners. Same black screen with mouse pointer. I ran a virus scan in dos from the norton antivirus 2005 disk. Nothing came up even with it set to scan all drives and the heuristics set to their highest sensitivity level. I ran a scandisk and it came up with 100kb of lost clusters which it saved to a file. It was blank except for about 5kb of junk at the end. The surface scan returned nothing. I ran a scanreg and it came out clean and saved a backup file. I'm pretty well stumped and would love any help on this. Quote

PC operating system: Windows XP home Professional Edition

What does that mean? Home or Pro? Service pack?

What was going on when it "locked up"?

Virus and spyware protection?

Have you run the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard drive maker's site?

Do you have a real XP CD if that is required?

Other recent issues with the machine?

when attempting to boot in safe mode, when you get the blank screen press ctrl alt delete. then from new task try typing in explorer.exe, if it works try doing a system restore

if you have a xp cd , you can try running the recovery console and try some of the fix commandIt is service pack 2, sorry about that. At the time of the crash I had spysweeper, sygate personal firewall and Norton antivirus 2005 running with all shields and the latest virus definitions. Pressing anything on the keyboard such as ctr;+alt+del doesn't do anythying. It just sits there. At the time of the crash I was extracting files from a windows cabinet file for use on trying to get my new laptop to run windows 98. It started to freeze up and then totally just stopped responding. I think hard-booting my pc corrupted some major system file. I do not have a windows xp disk because I got my pc off Ebay and of course they STOLE the cd. The recovery feature on my system is a peice of junk. It just gives you an option to format your hard drive. I ran all sorts of diagnostics on my hard drive and they all came up clean. Recently I had a slight problem with the power supply but I fixed that. Is there a way to ru na system restore from dos? If there is it would probably fix this.Everyone needs a real Windows CD sooner or later. In your case it appears to be sooner.

No doubt you overwrote some critical file(s) and hosed the system. The hard reboot certainly did not IMPROVE things.

You will need a Windows CD.Running system restore without a CD is possible, provided you can start in safe mode with a command prompt.

Solve : sfc /scannow ????

When I run sfc /scannow ,it tells me to insert my windows xp pro cd
I do not have w xp pro I have windows xp home edition sp2

I can't get past that and have to re-boot to get it off.
I did insert my windows xp home edition cd but that didn't help anything, it still does that.
This computer is only 3 months old and was built for me by a guy who has a small business in my town.

If you MEAN you have Home Edition installed... then apparantly not. One way to find out is to look in the desktop backgrounds and look at the "Windows XP" background. If it's green you have Home, if it's blue you have Pro

Or if you mean you have the Home CD only and you are trying to use it on a Pro version... you'll need to ask that guy for the right CD.When I go to 'my computer' and then 'system information it says:
Windows xp home edition
version 2002
sp2
INTEL (R)
Pentium (R)
D cpu 2.66 GHz
2.67 GHz
o.99 GB Ram

When I called him about this he said I had the XP Home edtition and just stick the cd in and that would fix it, as I said it didn't it is the cd he gave me with the computer.

I found this info on my computer:

Page File C:\pagefile.sysTry putting the i386 file from your XP CD onto your C:\ drive and altering the registry to point to it there, you can then run sfc/scannow without inserting the CD.

Step 1

You will need to get your XP CD and locate the folder called: I386

This is a major folder and should be one of the first you see, now copy this onto your hard drive into the system root. For most of you that is GOING to be C: so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:I386

Step 2

Your computer needs to know that you now have the necessary files on your PC. This is done by editing the registry. Here's how: (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu)

By navigating to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWind owsCurrentVersionSetup

You will see various entries here on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C: Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change to the drive letter of your root drive, probably C:

Now RESTART your computer and try sfc /scannow again!
Thank you so much, I printed your instructions off and will try them.

Answer»

hi guys, i was just hoping that somebody can HELP me out with this problem please, last night i went round the girlfriends and her dad has just got a acer laptop which had norton on already installed, so i told him about the problems with norton and told him to use AVG . So i put it onto his computer and loaded it and when prompted restarted then realising i hadnt uninstalled norton! the computer rebooted and came on fine, but then i noticed that the taskbar only contained the clock and whun i put the cursor over the start tab an egg timer comes on instead of the arrow and i cant click on any desktop items, on the few times i have been able to click start and try to head to control panel it just freezes, it wont boot in safe MODE either, can anybody help with this please?
What happens when you try Safe Mode? How to remove the Norton virus:

DLoad the tool below...

Norton Removal Tool

1) Use Add Remove Programs first and un-install Norton...
2) From Windows Explorer search for any folders named Norton and Symantec and delete them...
3) DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry...
4) Open regedit and type Norton in the search bar. Delete all entries it finds. F3 takes you to the NEXT instance of Norton. Continue til you have reached the end of the registry...
5) Repeat the above process using Symantec instead in the search field. Delete any Symantec keys it finds...
6) Now run the Norton Removal tool you DLoaded...
7) Empty the recycle bin...
Go to My Computer and right clik the C: drive and select Properties and run disk cleanup...
9) Re-boot and run disk defrag....

There you're done !

See how easy Symantec makes it for you to dump their product ? ?

Solve : Downloading Issue?

Answer»

nope, rapidshare thoughWhich qualifies as one of the usual SUSPECTS in my book...

But if it is a certain file size each time i suspect your ISP is to blame with DLoad limits or some other nonsense...read your contract with them.
But what about the installetion? I get errors in installing FSX (flight simulator x) for example, aslo it chenges the file that is corrupted, once its this file next try its that file. Same for fifa07Well if it as an "ahem" version of any game this is a common error message...

You get what you pay for...No THATS the annoying part both are genuine. no I tried to install GTA san andreas and it also say its corrupt and its genuine copy too.If they are "genuine" why do they need to be DLoaded ? ?
I'm confused.you didn't understand me.

I said everyting i download is corrupt. its other stuff not the games.

the games is from genuine cd's... witch also say they were corrupt. Its bigger problem than genuine or non genuine products, dl using accelerators or rapidshare. dont you see? everything i download or install (including windows) just say its corrupt. everyting! and this cd's worked on my SYSTEM beforeTime for a format and clean install of Windows...

Solve : Incorrect Windows CD.?

Answer»

I just tried running sfc /scannow, but I APPARENTLY don't have the right CD. It ASKED me to insert Windows XP Pro CD2, so I inserted my Gateway [GM5094E] Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 OS Disc, which is the only CD that CAME with my computer (aside from the one with my monitor drivers). But it's telling me that I'm not inserting the correct CD. So...am I going to have to contact Microsoft about getting the CD I need? If so, I'm assuming that PROBABLY wouldn't be free; I doubt they're too keen on handing out OS CD's to random people who ask for them. Are there any ALTERNATIVES? This isn't imperative to me right now (I was simply running scannow for the heck of it), but it could be in the future. When you buy a PC with Windows installed the manufacturer is responsible for OS support. Contact Gateway.Alrighty, will do. Thanks.

Solve : Upgrade Problems?

Answer»

No, I am not SAYING that at all. If you have a Win98 start up disk (or a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com) you can remove it:

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/install/fdisk.htm

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+delete+ntfs+partitionOk, so it can't be magically rolled back. Is there a way to delete the NTFS Partition and reformat and go back to the Fat32? If so, can SOMEONE please give the step by step instructions on how to do this? ThanksThankyou for your help. I will check this out and LET you know how it WORKED out.

Solve : Launching Windows Search?

Answer»

I'm trying to find a way to launch a Windows SEARCH applet through a command line and to pass it search criteria. Here's a scenario I envision:

Let's say I WANT to find all the files with a filename that matches the mask *12*_g*.prt and I want to search a network drive Q: and in the folder MyFiles. Now, it appears the Windows Search is a function of explorer.exe, so I WOULD hope for a command line switch that would allow me to do something like this from a Start->RUN dialog:

explorer.exe /search:"q:\MyFiles\*12*_g*.prt"

So entering that, I would want the standard Windows Search applet to launch, search q:\myfiles for files matching the criteria *12*_g*.prt and present any files found in the typical windows search window.

Sadly, I've researched the command-line SWITCHES for explorer.exe, none appear to be something to do this.

Does anyone have a trick up their sleeve to do this?

Thanks

Solve : System crashed during shutdown?

Answer»

A weird problem:

I have done a fresh re-install of on a slightly older system (P3-900MHZ, 384MB): Windows XP-SP2 with all latest fixes; Office 2003-SP2 with fixes, Adobe 8.0, McAfee Security center.
Reason for the re-install was the switch from ME to XP; I started with fdisk (from 2 to 1 partition)

System runs great BUT crashes (hard halt) during shutdown in the last screen ("Windows is shutting down")
After that all I can do is cut the power and start which is no problem at all, no messages either.

In the event LOG I find 2 acpi errors (event 4 & 5) that occur during start-up.

No BSoD, no stop codes, no dumps.

Please advise.

(Sorry, it is rather later here and it has been a long rather hard day for me)
I do no get your response: I understand from the link that the manual is no longer available, so, how do i solve the shutdown problem?
Are you suspecting a HARDWARE problem here? Not sure how to use this thing but I will try. I need advice on why my system cannot boot to regular windows. I keep getting the same page that says, "sorry for the inconveniance but windows experienced a hardware or software problem while shutting down, please use the arrow keys to choose how you would like windows to start" or something of that nature. Then I get a list of options like, start windows normally, start in safe mode, start on the last good blah blah blah....
Anyway, here is the situation;
When this happened, I was using real player to burn some music. After completion, I shut down real player and exited all other programs then went to re-boot because I had just installed some updates from the automatic update thing. There were like 50 something updates because I had disabled it a couple months back then enabled it again. After reboot, I kept landing on the same page and couldn't even get to safe mode. I could hear the computer clicking somethng each time, like trying to either start something or turn something off. After awhile I managed to get into safe mode and ran a virus check,...nothing. then I browsed around to see if I could figure out anything....nothing.
So now I reboot trying to get back to normal windows but still end up on the same page. I am running windows XP pro and the system was running fine until I rebooted after the updates. If this makes sense to anyone, please help. thank you. 8-)After you did the clean install did the system start this behavior immediately (before you added all the ANTIVIRUS & Office stuff, along with everything else but the SP's), or after you loaded all that stuff?

I am not totally sure as I only noticed after the full installation .. actually at the moment when I thought that I was ready .. but probably after installation of Office 2003 as I remember a number of forced restarts during the updates of that package (first to SP2, then to updates)
The order of installation that I used was:
XP
SP2 for XP
McAfee
updates via Internet for all of these
Office 2003
SP2 for Office 2003
Nero
Epson printer
Adobe 8
modem driver (via driveragent.com)

In the mean time, I have de-installed Office2003 and also RESET msconfig to start all initial systems as I had changed that also.
No difference....

I found the problem: it was the modem driver.
What happened was that after I completed the install, I noticed that the modem driver was missing (PCI simple comm controller).
I hooked up to driveragent.com which suggested the Creatix V.90 HaM for which I downloaded the driver; all went smooth. But, APPARENTLY, it is not trhe correvt driver. I deinstalled and the problem went away.
Thanks for all your help.Proper drivers are important. Glad we were able to.
