Solve : computer will only run in safe mode?

Answer»

This is not a quick-fix problem, and I really need an expert who can help me.  :-?
Since about last August, my computer will freeze less than five minutes after booting in normal mode. This will happen whether I use the internet, log on, etc.- there seems to be no correlation between what I'm doing and when it freezes. It started one morning when I woke up to a frozen screensaver- restarted the computer, and it froze a few minutes later... again, and again and again. I cannot recall making any changes at all to my computer before this started. I tried system restore immediately and it said no changes had been made to my computer.
Since then i've been working in safe mode with networking, which besides being a general nuisance, has put my computer at risk because I'm unable to install windows updates, etc.
For the past week or so I've been posting at the SWI forums and the only conclusion that we've really come to is that it's not a malware problem. Here's the link to the post if you'd like to review it: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=92457&st=0

Anyone who has any insight on this at all, please help? Are there any entries in your Event Log which show a problem :-?

Is your RAM usage exceptionally high :-?DLoad and run the HDD diagnostics from your HDD's site...

DLoad and run memtest...let it run for a few hours...

Other than that it might be a power supply issue which can only be tried by swapping out a new unit.I checked the Event Log ALREADY, didn't find anything unusual.

i'm only using about 2/3 of my memory.

How can I find out what my hard drive manufacturer is? My BROTHER "built" this computer from various parts so I don't know it. Quote

How do you come to that conclusion? When was the last time Windows was loaded on that machine? Do you have a Windows CD to reinstall with if necessary? Quote

Go to the control panel to 'system' then -hardware then- device manager
double click on -disk drives. That should tell you what hard drive you have.
okay, got it, thanks.
i'm running that after i reinstall my graphics driver (which someone else suggested).

Perhaps this is wrong, to check my memory I looked under capacity at properties on my c: drive?

I've tried to load windows normally several times in the past week with no luck.

I only have a windows upgrade cd, which i tried to do repairs with and got NOTHING but error messages.Reinstalling my graphics driver didn't work. and the diagnostic hdd tool found no problems.

i can't run memtest yet because i don't have a floppy to create a bootdisc on.You can run it if you burn it to a cd using the iso.Have you considered doing a reinstall after backing up your data files? THis will not fix any hardware problems, but will solve all Windows problems.....for a while.

Solve : Incomplete load at initial startup?

Answer»

Well, I'm back with this one again.  I'm running XP home (upgrade version), athlon xp 2100+, 768 megs ram, 60 gig hd with 60 gig slave.  The situation is this: when I initially start the COMPUTER not everything loads.  The NETWORK card, the scanner, Norton AV (systemworks 2006), these items don't load properly.  When I restart the computer everything loads fine.  So if I want to go online, use the scanner etc. I need to start the computer and then restart it to get everything to load.  It hasn't always been like this, unfortunately I can't pinpoint exactly when it started.  It's more of an inconvenience than anything else, but I grow weary of it, so if anyone's got any suggestions....

ThanksIs everything checked to run at startup?
Are you sure it's now just slowly loading them?  Try leaving it for a while.
When you say it doesn't load properly, what exactly do you mean?Yes everything is checked to run at startup.  I can leave it on all day, but only loads fully after a restart.  What I mean by "doesn't load properly" is
1. The scanner - when I restart, the scanner initializes, the lamp comes on and scans back and forth once.  When I first startup it doesn't do that.  The scanner connects via USB, so I might be able to assume that USB drivers are not loading.
2. Norton - when I restart there's a little red x over the icon in the system tray while the program initializes which disappears once the program is finished loading.  When I first startup it doesn't do that.
3.  The network card - only loads after a restart.  At first startup the icon never shows up in the system tray.  No network connections show in the the control panel.  No network devices show up the the DEVICE manager.

There may be more, but these are the immediately noticeable things.

Thanks
Remove all instances of Norton from startup temporarily and see what happens...

patio.  8-)When was the last time Windows was installed on this machine? What would you think about a reinstall if it comes to that?

I like the Norton idea.  I'll give that a shot.  And yeah, I suppose a reinstall would be an option, but I'd really rather avoid it if at all possible.  Thanks for the suggestions.Happy Monday everybody!  I tried disabling Norton at startup and I'm still getting the same result.  Any new ideas out there?Travel Here  for complete instructions on how to do a repair install of XP Home.

I would read it through thouroughly and print out a copy for reference.

This method will retain all your programs and data.

After this i recommend developing a backup strategy in future.

For this i suggest Acronis True Image.  Best deal on it currently is fron newegg.com ( Kudos To GX1_Man ! )

patio.  8-)And after that operation here are complete instructions on removing the Norton Virus....

DLoad and run the tool below...

Norton Removal Tool

1) Use Add Remove Programs first and un-install Norton...
2) From Windows Explorer search for any folders named Norton and Symantec and delete them...
3) DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry...
4) Open regedit and type Norton in the search bar. Delete all entries it finds. F3 takes you to the next  instance of Norton. Continue til you have reached the end of the registry...
5) Repeat the above process using Symantec INSTEAD in the search field. Delete any Symantec keys it finds...
6) Now run the Norton Removal tool you DLoaded...
7) Empty the recycle bin...
Go to My Computer and right clik the C: drive and select Properties and run disk cleanup...
9) Re-boot and run disk defrag....

There you're done !

See how easy Symantec makes it for you to dump their product ? ?

patio.   8-)

I suggest AVG Free or Avast...both free and fine products
Both you and your machine will be happier...Thanks for the suggestions.  I've already run the reinstall of XP.  Both the easy method suggested, and the more complicated method using the first repair option.  I'm actually pretty computer savvy.  I'll try uninstalling Norton (again, been there done that, but not recently on my own computer) just to see if that truly is the problem, but I'm not entirely convinced that's what's going on.   But...what the heck.  If you're gonna play...play!

Thanks again. It's been a little bit, but here's the latest update.  I uninstalled Norton (completely!!) and I still have the same issue.  I could simply back everything up, wipe the hard drive and start over, but I really want to figure this one out.  It's got not only myself, but also my boss (mega super computer guru geek! stumped.  So..I'm open to suggestions again!

Thanks. Quote

When was the last time Windows was installed on this machine? What would you think about a reinstall if it comes to that?

Well it's been 18 days since we started this, so surely you would have had time to reinstall Windows and had a smoothly running machine by now had you taken that approach, but some people like the thrill of an adventure.

Sometimes the ANSWER for a Windows problem is "just because".

Hi-Guy !

Disc Problem Solved !

According to the post below, there is mention of the prefetch file,
previously in this topic, I told you that the D/L's were searched and they were in the prefetch file, . . I asked you where on my system I could find this file, you never answered me on that, . . .Is there a particular reason you didn't ?

Also Prevex is running fine and reads computer security is good no issues, do I really need the other 3 D/L's ?

1. Start/run, type msconfig, click OK. Under the startup tab, look for it or anything related to it and diasable.
2. Look in the prefetch folder and delete it or anything related.
3. Disable system restore.
4. Boot to safe mode and rerun the scans. If the problem is detected and repaired, reboot normally. Re-enable system restore if desired.
NOTE: It might be a good idea to disconnect from the internet while doing this.

O.K.

I found the file >C:\Windows\prefetch<, . . but I was instructed , when trying to open it that Windows would have to go online to open it, which I did but it was not ABLE to open it, or I could open it manually but to choose a program from a list to open it, I HATE that, how am I suppose to know what program to choose if it can't find it online where it was suppose to have originated ??

I later found out that these files sometimes WIND up here because of an efficient way of downloading and the file stored is only part of the file.

I can not figure out what good this is doing me.

Anyway, there are alot of files here, taking up space and I'm going to have to do some work to find out which one's are necessary.

The same thing goes for Windows updates, there is a long list of these in add/remove, and I am wondering, when updates come automatically from MS to replace others, what happens to the file it replaces, am I suppose to know which ones are necessary and the ones that aren't  ?

Knowing that would put my mind at ease and probably provide a better running system.

The NTUninstall files are there in case you have a problem with anupdate and need to uninstall it...
If none of your updates have caused problems they are safe to delete.

But random deleting of files is also a good way to hose Windows...

Solve : Cannot paste to Word from Yahoo e-mail text?

Answer»

For several weeks now I have been unable to Copy text on my Yahoo e-mail(control C) and then Paste it onto a WORD doc (control V).  Each time that I try, the computer goes into an operational loop of some kind. When I do Cont.-Alt-Del I get the message that "Word" is not responding.   I am running Windows XP (2002) on a 3 year old home built machine with 1Gb ram, 160 Gb hard drive, cpu is AMD ATHLON 1800+ , 1.3 Ghz.  Like I said, this started months ago and I did nothing about it.  I used notepad instead but I would like to correct it if possible.  Any ideas any one??  :-/Do you know what happened before this started?
Try right click - copy, right click - paste instead of the shortcuts, does it still happen? If you paste into Word as unformatted text, will it work?  To do this, go to Edit, Paste Special, and select Unformatted Text.I have the same problem pasting to yashoo mail, I guess because its flash or something.... What I found does work is to highlite the text click and drag it straight to yahoo mail.... I never tried it yahoo-word but this maybe some help...Soybean,   Tried it, no luck.  THERER is no paste special option on my word.
Fat_b.......  Thanks for the info but dragging it has the sae effect as trying to paste. What version of Word do you have?  Every version since Word 97, and maybe some versions preceeding Word 97 have that option.  THEY ALL HAVE IT.  When you go to Edit from your Word toobar, what options do you see there?Soybean;   TKS tks tks,  That is it.   Don't know what I was missing the first time.   It was using paste inHTML
format.  Clicking any of the others will do it.  Thank you again.
Thanks to you also fat....b,  I appreciate your efforts and helpYou should also be able to use a two step procedure of copying from Yahoo e-mail to Notepad and then copy from Notepad to Word.  Notepad does not retain any formatting, so  this has the same effect as using the Paste Special option in Word.

Also, to speed up the technique in Word, you can create a simple macro to execute the Edit/PasteSpecial/Unformatted Text sequence, add a custom button to your Word toolbar, assign the macro to that button, and then just click on the button to execute Edit/PasteSpecial/Unformatted Text.  It's one click of the mouse instead of 3 or 4.  I've added that to my Word 2003 and I wouldn't want to use Word without it.Soybean:  How do I crate that special button on the word toolbar??Let's take this step by step.  Do you know how to record a macro in Word?  Are you familiar with using Word's Help to find info on various techniques and procedures? Here's what my Word toolbar looks like:

The pencil icon circled in red in my one-click button to execute Edit/PasteSpecial/Unformatted Text.SOYBEAN  Yes, i am somewhat familiar with help files.   :-? Altho this one about macros is confusing to me.   I have tried this:  call up WORD - TOOLS - macros -word command - paste format - run.......zilch.  I am back to where i started.  :-/   I don't know what i am doing, that's for sure.   Got nee more hints?? Also how did you get the shortcut onto the word toolbar??   I appreciate you try ing to help me out here.  Don't give up on yet,  thanksThe menu commands to record a macro: Tools, Macro, Record New Macro.  Please search Word's Help on Create macro for more detailed instructions and experiment with that until you're able to record a macro.

When you're done with that, let me know.   Then, we can add the custom button to the toolbar and link it to the macro.

Now were talkin!!!!  I need to stay up on this...OK, got it (i think) WORD - TOOLS - MACRO - RECORD NEW MACRO - Write in name for macro Click on KEYBOARD  then press the desired key combo ( I used Contr+1) then, using the mouse, click on EDIT - PASTE SPECIAL - UNFORMATED TEXT  - OK.   tHEN CLICK THE "stop recording" ICON.    ok ? ?   Whats nextt? ?

Solve : Unable to close network connection during shutdown?

Answer»

Hi,

I was WONDERING if anyone might be able to HELP me out. I'm unable to shut down my laptop. It's HP branded and runs on XP Pro.

What happens is that it sits or seems to be stuck on the process of "closing network connection" when trying to shut it down. It takes about 25 minutes to shut down because of this "closing network connection". I wonder if anyone might be able to tell me what may be the cause and how to fix this?

Thank you in advance
Do you have automatic updates turned on ? ?Thank you Patio for your reply.

Yes, i have the automatic updates turned on. Should i turn it off? I thought we're RECOMMENDED to turn it on all the time.

Any THOUGHTS?

Thank you in advance

You may have your web browser set to remember passwords - see if it is.
Isn't there some way to RECOVER your password?  Like the big "I forgot my password" link?
I really don't think passwords like Yahoo are stored on your PC, but I could be wrong.
And if it's that important, try not to forget the password. Quote

Exactly the point I was trying to make.
There's always a link to the same effect in case people forget, which is why I can only assume this isn't what they say it is.
Sorry if I'm being overly suspicious, but it seems a bit FISHY to me.It sure WOULD be nice to know what your all talking about, but,

Yes I can smell fish!

I also would like to see e-mail stamps issued by the Fed, but I don't get all

the Hash and Crack Stuff ?

Is that some kind of Computer pass word talk ?A hash is an encrypted password.
To crack the password is to use a special program to decrypt the hashed password so that it is readable.
Because encryption techniques constantly improve, cracking programs are often updated and are CPU-intensive.
So yes, hash and crack is computer password talk.hi Guys i still didn't find where is the MD5 Hashes and i'm sure my Yahoo Password and Admin is there and i know how to read MD5

Solve : Accidentally Deleted Windows Components...?

Answer»

I was going through my computer and deleting some un-used programs and somehow accidentally deleted some major windows components. Now i do not have the Speaker volume indicator on the bottom of my screen, and also it cannot load the same profile every TIME so i lose any saved changes to said profile...Its windows xp.
...any suggestions? To get the volume icon back on the taskbar, go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices. Under Device Volume, check the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" option. If there's an error that COMES SAYING to go to Add/Remove Programs, then you're have to just that. In Add/Remove Program, you can try to install the volume icon in Add/Remove components. Scroll through the list to SEE if you can find it. If not, you'll have to install it from the CD.

When you say you're having trouble with your profiles, do you mean hardware profiles? What exactly is wrong with them?

Gizmo73If you have a real Windows CD you can try a repair install.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

If not, you can backup your data and try a format and reinstall. If you actually deleted the components, then getting an icon back is the least of your problems, and that won't make it WORK.

Solve : my pc slows down when...?

Answer»

Hi there, need help on my pc. My pc slows down when i'm running 2 or more programs simultaneous and my media player will sound distorted (like a pirated/corrupted copy) when I open other program/s such as Word, Excel or when I copy or scan a file. How do I fix it?Start by telling us about the COMPUTER, RAM, operating system, service pack on it, virus and spyware protection, etc.

Information gets relevant responses.  Why does my Win media player (ver. 9) hang-up/distorted sound when I open other application(ex. Word, Excel)?

My PC: Windows XP;  Pentium 4 2.8GHz
RAM: 512MB

It's like there is something grounded inside. The sound distortion comes along with the BLINKING of the LED infront the CPU.

most likely you need more ram...like 1gb.  does your speakers sound fine before you start multi-tasking? Yes my speakers are functioning well. Ive tested other speaker and the result were the same. I don't think its in the RAM. I dont have any other applications installed (games, softwares, etc) that would require such. Quote

He doesn't need more RAM, 1gb-2gb of RAM are only for the extreme gamers. 512MB is enough RAM to play music. It is most likely some sort of malware, again what kind of malware protection do you have.Run both of the scans below then come back.
Ewido/AVG Online Scan
Panda ActivescanThat used to happen to me to... That only happens to me now if I have like 50 programs running... Firstly... Drop Windows Media player and go with WinAmp... It is WAY better... And the way I fixed it was I got an upgrade... I got a new stick of ram and it started working again... So ya... I know what you are talking about... Like I said get rid of Windows Media Player... Do not use Windows Products unless you have to... There are a lot of bugs in them...When you said the computer lcd blinks, it's a sign it's accessing your hard drive.

What programs were you running? What other background tasks are running? If background tasks such as scheduled virus scan, backup,  updates are running while you try to do work or play any kinds of av on your pc, you will notice the slow down.
If you don't have background tasks running, it could be the programs take up lots of ram or accessing hugh amount of data from you harddrive or both, could even be a malware causes it. There are many reasons why a computer slows down, more detail would help.

B.Thanks a lot guys.

My computer is not connected to the internet anymore, but it is used to be. I experience the problem eventhough i only run a Word and WMP at the same time.
I dont have much knowledge on computer hardware, etc. Hope these info could help.

dl65  find a program called erd commander. this is a great program for WORKING in a network environment where some knuclehead might have changed your ADMIN password too.. there are other utilities built into it as well but the locksmith is a real godsendcia commander is much better than that, but more expensive This allows you to get in with no password at all. There you go!

Computer has been on a half hour alreadyThat was quick LOL!
When it crashes what does it do or not do?
Your temps are ok.I'll be doing something and the screen just goes black.  It doesn't do anything unusual I NEVER know when it will crash.

But there are things that DO make it crash...these are:

Playing games
Watching videos online, large flash animations/videos
Sometimes when listening to music'

Basically the computer sucks overall  You can't do anything that makes it work.  And it shouldn't be overloading the processor with these little things.Try updating your video drivers. They are updated.  Everything is updated. What is the computer make and model? How about the power supply and wattage? How old is it?The computer is 5 years old, but it has been crashing since 2.

It's a V2 Premier. A brand they sell on ShopNBC.

Power Wattage..no clueThat seems a reasonable PLACE to start. And then a format and reinstal of Windows, after backing up your data, especially if that is the ORIGINAL load.

Solve : Windows Media center help!?

Answer»

I just built a new computer and I tried to install the Windows media center edition OS, everything was going fine, it loaded all the files from CD1, then it formatted the partition, which is my HDD. Then it rebooted and started windows and then the setup. Then the computer constantly rebooted and right before it reboots a window pops up saying, "A write operation was attempted to a volume after it was dismounted". I have no clue what this MEANS, but it's making my computer reboot every time it tries to run the Windows setup. Can somebody help?

Solve : bandwidth managment?

can i designate a portion of my bandwith to a specific service running? i have an xbox 360 CONNECTED to my PC via an ETHERNET cable and i have ICS running. but for some reason ive been lagging in some of my games. so is there a way i can designate a portion of my bandwith to the 360 when its running? or if there is a more solid way to fix this i am open to any suggestions. would a network bridge between my wireless adapter and my ethernet adapter be better for this? thanksWhat you want is what the local server does. You could have another service added. COSTS more, but will speed things up.   could you possibly tell me how to do that or maybe link me to SOMEWHERE to show me how?

Solve : Problems with Copy and Paste .bmp, .gif?

Answer»

I have Window's XP and am using MS Office 2003.  I need help understanding why I'm missing some ability to copy and paste .bmp and .gif file type images.  I can find and image on the web and save it; I can receive an an image by email but I can't copy and paste it to anyplace else.  It acks like a .jpg.

I don't have any problems with text just active files.  Has anyone ever had this problem before?  Thanks for your time,

Tom  Have you tried right CLICKING on the image "save picture as" and....I dont understand this "it acts as a JPEG"

bmp and .gif file type images are good for clip art, cartoons, ETC. where jpeg file type is best for photos.

Don't forget too that when copying a picture into Word for example you must change the text wrap if you like to move it around the PAGE.  The difference of a in-line graphic to a  floating graphic.

99% of the time, I will attempt to copy the active file and paste it onto a new email or in a word document.  The new piece of mail or .doc file will just be blank after I try to C&P.  Sometimes there is a empty box sillowette with that little box in the top left corner that I would hit to "DOWNLOAD image".  Nothing happens.  If and when I can get the image to duplicate, it no longer is an active moving file.  It turns into a "still" picture of the once moving .bmp or .gif type type files.  Thats what I meant by it asks like a jpeg.

Apparently Windows is allowing me to search for the files but copy and paste in MS office/Word (the default editor) or Outlook is stopping me?  There are script and Java settings I'm unsure of.  It has to be a setting from what I'm thinking.

Did I clear that up any?  I appreciate your time.

Solve : Windows XP Start Up Problem?

Answer»

I'm new to the board. I found it after googling for a solution to the problem I'm having.

I built my own PC.

Intel D865 Perl motherboard
Intel P4 2.87 gHz cpu
IDE devices
- 2 Western Digital 250 GB HDs
- Plextor DVD+-RW/CDRW drive (master)
- Sony CD drive (slave)
media card usb drive

Windows XP Professional

Something infected the boot table. i could access the HD and copy data off it (pictures). Then i formatted and reinstalled windows.

I got a clean start before i connected the DVD drive. The CD was set to master.

I shut down and connected the DVD as master and set the CD to slave.

The BIOS recognizes every device.

However, windows hangs when trying to start.

I've set the CD to master and DVD to slave. I've taken the CD out and set the DVD to master. I've tried multiple different configurations.

If the DVD device is connected windows will not start.

I thought there might have been a problem with the Plextor DVD drive so I bought a new HP DVDRW/CDRW drive. same problem.

Since the bios recognizes the devices it makes me THINK there's something wrong with windows plug-n-play.

Although it did start SUCCESSFULLY w the CD and USB drives when the DVD was not connected.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.I would suggest you connect the CD/DVD drives in the configuration you want, then do a fresh FORMAT and reinstall of Windows. This may prove to be the quickest and simplest way of overcoming the drives not being recognised.Disconnect all drives except the HDD that has XP on it...introduce one drive at a time with all power off and DOUBLE check the device in My Computer and Control Panel/Device Manager.

Did you remember to install all drivers especially the MBoard drivers on this build ? ?

patio.   8-)

p.s. This could also be something as simple as a bad IDE cable. Buy a new one for the optical drives.

Solve : Deleting an operating system off my computer?

Answer»

ok when i start up my computer i have two options to start the computer with windows 2000 or windows xp. i dont want to have to do that every time so i want to delete windows 2000 and keep windows xp but i dont know how. can someone please help me...thank you.The easiest way is to format the drive and only install XP. There are a lot of ways to screw it up by tinkering with things. Is there only one hard drive? Only one partition?there is only one hard drive and i dont know how many partitions there are cause i dont know how to check. its a dell LAPTOP also.Right click My Computer and select Manage....choose Disk MANAGEMENT and LIST everything it shows there.yes there is only one partition. ut there is two operating systems and i dont have the xp cd to use. is there any other way?Everyone NEEDS a real Windows CD sooner or later. Where did yours go?my mom says she lost it and she is the one that did this to her computer. im just trying to fix it for her. if i right click the C drive and go to format. what exactly will that do. will it erase everything like 2000 and XP?You cannot format the drive Windows is on while running Windows.

In Windows XP, you will get an error message that says Quote

Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.

Solve : Sound does not work with internet media.?

When I view any kind of streaming audio or video or flash ANIMATION or anything, I'm unable to hear the sound for it. It plays, the video shows fine, the position slider moves for music, etc, but no sound :|

I tested it in both Firefox 2.0 and Opera 9.0. Neither work. Sound plays fine from media on my computer, just not when it's coming from online. Any suggestions? What OS?
What sound card?
Have you tried using IE?Has this ever worked correctly? You may want to download codecs from here:

http://www.theorica.net/download.htm

Choose The Codecs 5.0 - 9x/ME/2000/XP (English) near the bottom. Quote

What OS?
What sound card?
Have you tried using IE?

Ah sorry, I forgot this info. I was in a rush when I made the post.

OS: Windows XP PRO (SP2)
Sound Card: C-Media CMI8738/C3DX Audio Device

I tried in IE 7 as well and it does not work.

And yes, GX1_Man, it has worked before. I think it's been like this for about a week, but I don't watch much online media so it wasn't a BIG ISSUE. I just decided it was time to stop PUTTING it off.

Thanks for that link, I'll try that out in a bit and tell you if it helped :]

EDIT: Well those codecs did not work, unfortunately.Try updating the sound card drivers.

Solve : Having problems with desktop image...?

Answer»

Ok, so I had some kind of TROJAN horse virus a while back and thankfully it was found by AVG (but not by stupid Symantec...).   Anyways, I've noticed since I had that virus I have been unable to have an image on the desktop.  If I choose to have something as an image it'll show up when I'm logging on or off and will show up when I hit ctrl-alt-delete to get to the task manager.  I can have a "pattern" for the desktop image, but that's it.  I can see the list of pictures from the My Pictures folder, but I can't scroll through them and I can't click browse either.  I have tried everything to activate Active Desktop or whatever and I'm getting nowhere.  I created another log on name on my computer and it let me have a background image just fine.  Is there anyway to fix that so I don't have to have an entirely new log on profile?  I've also noticed that DOS games no longer WORK on my computer.  My boyfriend is really good with computers and he can't figure out what the problem is for the life of him.  Also, for a while there was a red circle with an X in it that was in the part of the taskbar that's next to the clock (where all of the start up stuff is) that would say "Your computer has been infected" whenever you would hover over it, but nothing would happen when you would double click it.  I did a virus scan with Symantec (that was before I ever knew about AVG) and it would say there were no viruses detected.  My mom said she double clicked the red circle and it just started scanning the computer and it had some weird bug THING pop up.  I then did a Windows update and it disappeared shortly after that.  Any idea what that could have been?  Could that be why my desktop doesn't work properly anymore?  Please help!  I'm getting so frustrated! It would help to KNOW what OS you are using.

Solve : Windows MCE installation problem?

Answer»

I just built a new computer and I tried to install the Windows media center edition OS, everything was going fine, it loaded all the files from CD1, then it formatted the partition, which is my HDD. Then it rebooted and started windows and then the setup. It displayed the time remaining for the setup (39 min. remaining), then one of those blue screens showed up. It said, "windows had detected an error and is therefore SHUTTING down to prevent damage.."  below that had this displayed "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" I restarted the computer  a couple of times and it still gives me the blue screen message. The MCE package CAME with 3 discs and the instruction manual is CRAP w/ no details.

Can anybody help w/ this problem?

Is there any way I can do the installation all over again?

3) Me - girl at her wits end
4) Mouse - Microsoft wireless kind

Tale:
I have a frustrating problem. I upgraded to a used (new for me) PC a couple weeks ago.  I still switch between the new one and my old one.  This consists of me switching out the mouse, keyboard, monitor, internet connection so that I can still use certain programs on my old PC.

I had switched over to my old computer for a couple days and last NIGHT when I went to go plug everything back in to the new one, the mouse will not work. You can SEE things being highlighted but there is no pointer graphic which MAKES it very difficult to tell where the mouse is.  When I plug everything back into my old PC the mouse works fine.

I am not computer savvy and would greatly appreciate any insight anyone might have.  I had uninstalled my mouse from new PC and it still had the problem.  I also turned it off and restarted it numerous times.  Plugged it in and out numerous times.  And I went into my devices and everything seemed to be normal.

Cheers,

Solve : Unknown bar above Windows XP taskbar?

Answer»

Hello,

It appears that my computer all of a sudden has an unknown bar above the Windows XP taskbar.

I don't believe this bar has been there for the time I have had my computer, because I am sure I would noticed it and now for some reason it is sticking out.

However, I have ran various spy ware, ad ware, and anti virus programs, and I have found nothing.  I have tried to search for topics relating on this matter and I have found nothing.

If SOMEWHERE has an answer to this problem please let me know.  It might be nothing or it might be something the THING is I don't know.  I have enclosed a picture and it is the smaller bar running ACROSS the top of the taskbar.Any toolbar add ons or 3rd party eye candy installed ? ?No nothing to my knowledge....at least not in add / remove programs....other suggestions???Try a few other monitor resolutions...When you right click on the taskbar does the Lock the Taskbar option have a check next to it? If it doesn't click on it.Hey thank you for the suggestions!!! The task bar lock was not checked and that's what it was. Thank you all I APPRECIATE it.

Solve : Windows Reinstall error?

Answer»

It all starts off with a simple update. One afternoon I received the notification to install IE 7. I clicked the notification and the process starts. As it finishes it tells me to restart my COMPUTER. I restart it and it seems as if it is going fine. As soon as it is done loading windows my computer restarts. I watch it again and it does this in a continuous cycle.

So I though to myself, I might try the repair function on my CD. I put my XP CD in and went through with the process. Now what seems to have happened is that it installed a new Windows XP and is running extremely slow. It is telling me that I need to reactivate and it tells me this in safe mode also. Im stumped on what to do.

I would greatly appreciate any help that I can get. Im not sure what to do from this point on

Thank you very MUCH.

Robert. When you reinstalled did you delete any partitions?  Are you saying that because it is running so slow that you might have two operating systems on it? Is this not the same operating SYSTEM that was on it before?  and.....is it a legal copy?  Gee I thought I typed this somewhere else!Im not sure if i deleted any partitions or not. I dont think I did. I might have two operating systems on it, that is a good thought. It is the same OS as before. and I am pretty sure it is a legal copy. My friend did all the installtion of Windows when I got this computer. So what you are saying is after you installed IE 7 and restarted the computer it GETS to the MicroSoft Windows XP screen and then it restarts... That is what happened to me before... Well... It happened because my Tower fell of my desk (Stupid dog) and the hard drive screwed up... What you should do is REINSTALL windows and then try... If not... Call geek squadI just thought of trying system restore.  Also, MS Windows has an open forum and discussion area.

Solve : Uninstaller problems?

Answer»

Hi all.
Today, I found out that I can no longer uninstall programs.
I've tried using Windows Add/Remove programs, CCleaner, clicking "uninstall(program name) in the Start menu, and going into the program's FOLDER and choosing the uninstall program.
Whatever I try to uninstall, it doesn't load.
No errors or anything, just nothing happens.
I've tried a System Restore to a few days ago when I could definitely uninstall things, and it hasn't helped.
In addition, after using System Restore Quicktime Alternative has problems.
As soon as I open it I get a buffer overflow error.  When I press OK, Quicktime closes.

Does anyone have any ideas?I've now noticed that Quicktime Alternative only crashes when the Audio tab on the configuration options is opened.
Don't know if this is important or if the two problems are even licked. If this is XP you're running try Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.

patio.

p.s. Are you running both Quicktime and Quicktime Alternative ? I've read that this can cause problems...OK, I'll try the system file checker in a few minutes.
No, I'm not running QT and QT Alternative, but I can see how my post would lead you to think that.
Sorry for any confusion.
I did uninstall QT before installing the Alternative, but it now shows up in Add/Remove programs again, not sure why.
Please don't say uninstall it, I tried and it gave me an error message about some msi file not being found.  I used Search to look for it and it's non-existent, even if I check every option so it checks hidden and system folders too.
Thanks for the reply.
BTW, nice to see you back, Patio.OK if you got an msi error message the Windows Installer is possibly corrupt. Believe it or not the installer can affect un-installing.

Travel Here for the package from the mothership.

This may or may not fix the issue but it's worth a shot...

patio.  8-)

p.s. Thanx.I downloaded and installed that (installed the installer?).
Unfortunately it hasn't helped.
I also tried sfc /scanow.  It didn't prompt me for my Windows CD and didn't do anything but scan.
Quicktime is the only program that gives me an msi error, the others just don't do anything.
I tried reinstalling Quicktime and got the same error.
Any ideas?The plot thickens.
It SEEMS the only problems I have now, for some reason, is with installing/uninstalling Quicktime, where it gives me an error message, and with the Cyberlink software packages (DVD Solution, PowerProducer, and so on) where nothing happens other than a small flash.  No error message, no uninstallation.
I tried a sample of the other programs installed and the uninstaller worked fine, and they also reinstalled with no problems.  If it's important, I tried CCleaner, Ad-Aware and Spybot.
Strange. One more post and your up to a Grand ! !

Quicktime is a PITA...do you really need it ? ?

Unfortunately you're a bit late, I'm now at 1001, 1002 when I make this post.
I've gone a bit hyperactive with the POSTS, I've been making loads recently.
Yay, I'm a Mentor! Lol.  Not that I care about ranks or anything . . .
PITA . . . care to explain?
It's not that I need it, that's why I was using QT Alternative, but now I can't remove it or install it, and it's not there in the Start menu and I can't find it in Program Files or anything.Could it just be a leftover Quicktime entry in the Add/Remove list?
Ccleaner>Tools>Delete Entry should remove it for you.
First search your computer for 'quicktime', I bet the program is no longer there, maybe just a leftover directory or something.TweakUI for XP is also good for removing dead entries in XP...lots of other stuff to play with as well.Just an empty folder in application data.
Thanks for that, I'll delete the entry now, that's that solved.
TweakUI is awesome, already have it and use it.
Anyway, that still leaves the problem of being unable to uninstall the Cyberlink programs.
Any ideas on that one?
Edit: SPOKE too soon - CCleaner says "cannot delete MSI installer".A few years ago when I was young & silly I played with tweakui, never again. Quote

Solve : My Screenshot ??!!?

Answer»

Hey,

I am now takeing genius lessons, . .

I can now paste a screenshot on my Acrobat clipboard, . .
one Problem, . . . after I have saved the clipboard to my documents file, and delete the other the one I have saved is also deleted ?

What happened ?

Will very much appreciate an answer !!

JpJp....... I'm not certain exactly what it is your doing ....but to TAKE a screen shot, go to and open whatever it is you want the screenshot of.......press print screen key on your keyboard........... now click start/All programs/Accessories/Tools/Paint........ when paint opens, click the Edit button up top and SELECT paste ......... now the screenshot will appear in paint........ click file, then save as ......... ( give it a name) and save it to your desktop .
your done ....and you can do do whatever you want with the image you have on your desktop.

I think the problem was you saved the clipboard and as soon as you deleted the original ....... the clipboard would be deleted . ( think of the clipboard as a TEMPORARY thing )

dl65  dl65,

Amazing, . . .Thanks much !

Jpdl65,

Yep, . .  it worked and I have some interesting information for you.

I was curious and opened a test mail I mailed myself earlier with the clip board screenshot, and found that after sending you the reply to post that the reply to the post was what I found in the e-mail download containing the clipboard when I opened it, and not the previous pasted piece, ??

Now, I do not suppose that anything LIKE that is going to happen with paint, but, I would like to ask you, when previously in a post, you asked me for a screen shot, . . . the paint I have saved would have been sufficient for what you were asking, correct ?

JpThe clipboard will only hold one item at a time...so if you cut and paste for EXAMPLE whatever was on the clipboard is overwritten...

Solve : Ok, I give up!?

Answer»

:-?

I have saved numerous 'Maxine' cartoons in My Documents on my HP desktop (Windows XP Home)...however, when I click on the 'Maxine' folder and view the many cartoons, I then click on one to copy so I can paste it elsewhere (email or whatever), I'm unable to copy the cartoon or any of them.

In other words, I can not drag across the cartoon, highlight it and then copy it...it won't LET me do this.

As a 58 year old guy, I never said I was a 'whizball computer kinda guy' but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Somebody....please lend an old guy a hand.

LegManLegman-  Try doing it this way: Right click the cartoon and choose "Copy."  You will be presented with a dialog box in which you can "browse" for the location to which you want the cartoon copied.  Once you have located that spot simply LEFT click it to highlight and then hit "copy" button at lower right.  You can get to the same dialog box by a left click on the cartoon to highlight, and then choosing "Copy the SELECTED FILE" from the menu along the left side of the folder window.  Windows has several ways to copy, and the method you describe in your post  [drag along to highlight] really only works for text.  If you simply left click drag and drop the cartoon from one place to another, it is automatically copied not moved.  To move a file with drag and drop, use a right click and hold to drag.  When you drop it you will have to choose from Shortcut, copy, or move.  Hope this helps, good luck and please post back with your progress.

PS: I find this a very helpful resource: http://www.samspublishing.com/library/library.asp?b=STY_Windows_XP_24hours&rl=1If you want to send these pictures of maxine in an e-mail it would be better to send as an ATTACHMENT.

Solve : I Need Help With 'MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION' Message?

Answer»

Hi guys, I have recently been having a major PROBLEM with my MACHINE during start-up. The machine will boot-up fine if it has been turned off for a day or so but then as soon it is restarted (Sometimes need's restarting more than once for the problem to happen) I gat the blue screen of death with the 'MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION' message. I was hoping you guys could help me shead some light on the problem as you have been so helpful in the past. The best thing I think I can ask first is what are all the things that can make this message appear?

Its late now so I thought I would just ask before I go off to bed but I will get a full, in-depth description of my system up tomorrow.

Thanks, csem-it

Quick System Spec: (Please ask for any other relative INFORMATION that is needed)

My OS is Windows XP Pro
I have SP2 Installed

My System is:
Asus K8N-E Delux Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+
1536MB of 'Crucial' PC3200 RAM
128mb All in Wonder ATI graphics card.Overclocked :-?

See here.

Good luckWel, I know its not a problem with overclocking as I have never even attemted to do so. But it could be a problem with the RAM I spose as I replaced the RAM in the machine at christmas. Although wouldn't that cause the machine to fail on every start-up?

I will try putting only the old RAM BACK in when I can get hold of it.

Thank yoy Dusty. Does anyone else hae any idea's/advise?

EDIT: The machine worked flawlessly for the first two weeks aftere christmas (Putting the new RAM in)You can check the RAM with a free download from www.memtest86.com

Check each chip for about 30 minutes by itself, then all together. Post back with your findings.

Has this all happened since the change? Has ANYTHING else (hardware OR software) changed?

Yes, it has hapened only since the change but no, nothing else had changed. I will see if I can get it to boot up properly today and have a go at testing the memory.

Thanks.Re-seating the new memory may fix it too.

Solve : XP Home - IE 6.0 Parental Controls?

Answer»

I'm new and did searches on this subject line in the Windows and ID forums and didn't find anything, so I hope this is not repetitive.

I've recently set up wireless and GOT my 7-yr old's machine up on the INTERNET with XP Home.  I've gone in and set her account to "Limited", and had the IE controls very strict with a list of trusted sites and all...  but it appears that all the IE controls affect other LOGINS...  and if I give trust to, say, http://disney.go.com/ - while browsing the website it still POPS up the "enter password" to proceed box all the time.

Anyway, does anyone recommend any websites, literature, or information to assist with Internet parental controls on XP Home by logon?

Thanks.Plain and simple  If she is only 7 years old then a parent should be sitting beside her at all times if she is using the internet.  Very simple... You are able to create a list of websites that are allowed... ALSO... Do a google search (http://www.google.com) and search for Parental Controls... I know a few people that have them and use them for their kids... But I am not sure what they are called... Google is the best way to go...

Solve : access is denied message?

Answer»

I have a prob with System Volume Information folders. I understand the Sys. Vol. Info. folder in the root directory is supposed to be there, but after installing Microsoft's Baseline Security Analyzer a new Sys. Vol. Info. (SVI) folder appeared under C:\ and on my external hard DRIVE J:\.

SVI folders DETAILS--
root directory SVI folder:
Size: 49.6MB
Size on disk: 22.8MB
Contents: 44 files, 5 folders

C:\SVI folder--
Same details as root directory SVI folder

J:\SVI folder--
Size: 0 bytes
Size on disk: 0 bytes
Contents: 0 files, 0 folders

I've read VERY many of your posts concerning "Access is denied" probs and tried all the suggestions to DELETE the 2 "extra" SVI folders. So far, I've tried Killbox, MoveOnBoot, HJT (delete a file on reboot), and followed Microsoft's Article 308421 (How To Take Ownership Of A File Or Folder In Windows XP) in Safe Mode with no success whatsoever.

In Killbox nothing happens. In MoveOnBoot nothing happens. In HJT when I choose the J:\SVI folder, this message appears: J:\System Volume Information is not accessible. Access is denied.

I can delete the 2 offending SVI folders in Safe Mode using Microsoft's article, but upon rebooting into normal Windows, the 2 folders magically reappear as if I hadn't done a thing.

I realize that I can hide these folders by checking that item in Tools>Folder Options>View, but I want to be able to see those particular folders/files. This is how I noticed this prob to begin with. I'd like these 2 SVI folders GONE because I don't believe they were there before.

I'm hoping that someone can help me solve this irritation because it's about to drive me to drink (more than I already do). If anyone has any suggestions, please don't go guru on me because I know just enough about PC's to be dangerous. Thanks in advance for ANY new help.

It will be at no cost ....unless someone has been playing around and caused the issue..
There is a proper anti virus installed on this MACHINE and active ....... and some sort of firewall ....I hope .

dl65  Are you kidding me? There's nothing at all that I can do to RESOLVE this issue? That is some big BS...just to clarify, i mean the pictures aren't loading. i can still click the link and everything, but the pics for them aren't there.Unless you've done something to screw it up I'd take dl65's advice and return the computer from where you got it.  I know it's a lot of BS but if you got a lemon it's better to replace it now instead of messing around TRYING to fix it and run out the warranty.  THAT'S real BS.

Solve : What the Is In My Computer ??

Answer»

Yesterday, after running Hyjackthis, and eliminating some vagrants, Today I went on to check out some links for Wireless instructive and entered the How Stuff Works Site, which seems to be a "cake slice", with all the modern emenities, that you appreciate, that a great web page should have, when my expedition was rudly interupted by a message box from,

Microsoft Internet Explorer, . . and it reads, . . . . .

" Your CURRENT settings prohibit running Active X, As a result the page may not display correctly".

And during this advent the pages at first seemed hard to load and took some time doing so, or in one case opened and registered, "done", leaving behind a blank page.

When clicking back to the previous page, I encountered a problem with the back button arrow as it seemed to stutter a bit, etc., and not return back.

I am searching my computer for; Active X,

but have not found it on the, Local Disc C:,

However, . .  I did come across a notepad on my Local Disc C:,  reading on one page reading as follows;

This is my Web page about staplers. I think it's
pretty great so far. I'm an HTML master and
everyone should worship me.

I must have been on an insane bing if I put it there, but the frustrating

thing is, if I didn't, who did ?

Is there ever a way of finding out, if so how this magical moment took

place ?

Jp

First of all, it is normal to receive a message about ActiveX being disabled if it has, infact, been disabled on your machine.  ActiveX will not be "visible" on your machine as such because it is not a normal application.  ActiveX is a part of the Internet Explorer web browser that allows "plugins" to be used and active content to be displayed in your browser.  You can re-enable ActiveX in the internet explorer settings.  I will leave how to do that as a project for you because I BELIEVE figuring out things like re-enabling options in your browser is a good "project" that will teach you.

As for the HTML page:  If you did not write the page, there are several possibilities.  One is that you found a cached page from a webiste you had visited previously.  By saying cached here, I am referring to the temporary files that are stored on disk by the web browser to speedup loading of the most recently visited web sites.  If this is not the case then either you wrote
it (which I do not believe seeing as how you are unfamiliar with some of the
basic web browser functions) or someone else has access to the computer?
If none of these are the case, then it is very possible that you or someone
else with access to the computer downloaded and ran an application that
wrote that file to the computer as a prank.  If you have not noticed any
problems with your system (i.e. it's not running drastcially slower, Hijack This
can find no NEW problems on your system, and your anti-virus has found nothing) then there is probably nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps.  As for ActiveX, go to http://www.google.com and do a search
for ActiveX to learn more about it.  Remember, Google is our friend.Jp ....... Click on tools / Internet options / security tab then click custom level ....then scroll down and set the active X items as you want them to be or set them to medium.

dl65  Hello dl65,

I have accessed google and arrived at Internet Explorer ActiveX update

and found this;

Microsoft is releasing a software update to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

So, regarding previous reference to (SP2), ( you asked me if I had it installed, apparently you were not able to tell by seeing the results of the, Logfile of HijackThis),  I would like to know, . .
since I will download this packet from MS in the very near future,
what will be the correlation with ActiveX, there seems to be many versions of ActiveX, and it may be possible it is included with (SP2), although, maybe I should be looking further ?

In any case I have found the following on Add/Remove, and think it may be useful to show it to you as it appears to me it may be installed as I realized that at one time I had installed it but somehow either kept getting messages that the installation was not complete or I had some other doubts and may have started to uninstallit. In any case there seems to be alot of hotfixes, with the possibilities I may be not needing some of these applications.

Would you mind taking a look at this and reply your comments and suggestions, as to what I've got here ?
