Solve : Weird Choppy-ness?

Answer»

Alright, so this is kind of messed up, and it's stopping me from working AND playing on my laptop (Which is unfortunately my main computer)
When I'm using some APPLICATIONS (Any game, even simple web games, and some 'tools', namely Macromedia Fireworks 8, also Video in Windows Media Player, and often in Quicktime) that should work perfectly on my computer (it passes the recommended requirements), do work perfectly, but only for a few minutes, then they get extremely choppy, almost freezing up my computer. when I leave it sit for a few minutes, the program usually returns to normal, but sometimes closes down altogether. This has been happening for a few months now, but at first I blamed it on a specific game. I restored the factory defaults for my HARD drive, but the problem persists.

The system I'm using is an Acer "Aspire 3620"What happened before this started?
What MALWARE protection do you have?Everything was fine before it started happening...
As for protection, it was probably sometime between my Norton expiring and getting ZoneAlarm. It was a pretty big gap, but like I said,at the time I just thought it was one game, maybe because of too MANY objects on-screen, but it's happening even when I'm listening to music now.Did you do anything before it started?
Is this Zonealarm firewall, AV or what?
What other protection do you have?

Solve : SP2 Problems installing.?

Answer»

I checked for updates and saw I need SP2, which I thought I already had! Downloaded the update and tried to install. Then up comes a box telling me there is a problem with the trigger for the install and the Win XP I have might not be genuine! Computer came from a shop (some time back admitted) so I presume it was genuine. What can I do to install SP2 now please? Whilst shop was there for a few years, it has now closed down, so can't ask them about it. I have had the SUGGESTION that if I can find the receipt Microsoft might replace the version I have? No luck finding reciept yet. Probably chucked it once warrenty was expired!

pantherman..... Your machine has failed the WGA test , which probably means that you do in fact have pirated software .  Unless you have documented proof that your software is LEGAL , your only option now is to purchase a legal copy of Win XP Pro/SP2 and do a format and reinstall of a legal O/S.

DL65

Oh well, back to the filing cupboard looking for that receipt! Must be quite a few pirate copies out there then as the shop was selling for at least 3yrs to my knowledge. THANKS for the ADVICE though, at least I know what is happening.pantherman......  One thing I neglected to ask you was ....Do you have the cd that will have the O/S on it ?
If you do , how is it labelled ?

dl65  I did have the CD and am now busy looking for it. I made the mistake of thinking that buying from a small local shop would be okay! Maybe I should stick to the larger suppliers? When (if?) I can find it I will let you know about the label. Thanks.

Solve : Start-up problems.?

Answer»

So, I have an acer windows xp. When I go to START it up it will go to the acer screen. Then it will go to a menu that says

We apologize for the inconvience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this.

Then it gives me four options.

Safe Mode- when pressed it gives a bunch of file names then goes to windows xp's loading screen and then to
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with COMMAND prompt
Last Knowen Good Configuration
Start windows normally
when all the safe modes are pressed it gives a bunch of file names then goes to windows xp's loading screen and then to a blue screen that tells me that it is checking the c:, then it loads to 100% then it gives me the blue screen of death, then just RESTARTS itself.

When the other two are CLICKED it goes to the loading menu and then the checking of the c: drive, then the BSOD, then restarts. Anyone know what I should do?
Goyman........ When did this start?
Did it start after a recent windows update by any chance ?
How old is the ACER ?
Is it a laptop or DESKTOP ?

Solve : What is this POPUP????

Answer»

Since yesterday,I keep receiving a popup (even though I have them blocked). It starts out with  WARNING! Channel SETTING. Receiver Channel Changed. Then it goes on to tell me how to CHANGE the ID and Channel Settings. They want me to push the button on the back of the keyboard and or mouse. They go o n to say if I don't push the buttons, my keyboard and mouse will quit working in 30 seconds. (still work). The warning looks fake, even though I do have a wireless keyboard and mouse. I've called AOL, Gateway, my internet provider, Best Buy, and Geek Squad. No one can tell me what it is. It pops up every 3 seconds. I've ran all the virus scanners etc..they all say nothing was found. Can someone PLEASE tell me what this is and how to get rid of it. ThanksPinkBlazer.....  Have you tried opening the task manager to see if it shows up in there ?
Or perhaps a hijackthis scan POSTED here will show us what it it ..... But it's some sort of malware .

dl65  Does it pop up in Safe MODE?  Sounds like a virus or spyware to me.  You say "virus scanners". How about antispyware scanners?  Pop over to any of these sites & download / update the programs and run them.

Solve : MSDOS accounting program display only 25 lines?

Answer»

I have several MSDOS  .exe files that I have been using since Dos 3 to do my double entry bookkeeping and portfolio tracking, and analysis.  I prefer them to these newer Windows applications, and after almost 20 years prefer not to go to newer Windows applications.  I have been copying them from computer to computer as I acquire new machines.

Since getting a new machine with Windows XP home my display for these applications has shown up on the monitor restricted to just 25 lines.  I have selected either Window or full screen in the properties menu, but the display remains just 25 lines.   In computers using Win 3.1, 95, and 98 I get a full screen display.  I have told XP to run these apps as Win 95 apps, but this doesn't help.

Is there anything I can do in the REGISTRY or elsewhere to get more than the very irritating 25 line output? Here are the instructions for doing the same thing running Word PERFECT for DOS in a command window in XP:

Force 25-line mode for full-screen WPDOS under Windows 2000 and XP

Under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, WPDOS and other DOS programs start by default in 50-line mode when started in full-screen mode. The 50-line full-screen screen font is tiny and almost unreadable, and many standard DOS applications only fill the top half of the screen. To force WPDOS (or any other DOS program) to start in full-screen 25-line mode, perform the following steps:

First, create a WPDOS shortcut on your desktop if you do not already have one. (Help! What's a shortcut?) Modify the shortcut to use the memory settings and other options you want to use with WPDOS. (See the notes on customizing the WPDOS window elsewhere on this site.)

Next, do one or the other of the following (read both procedures before deciding which one you feel most comfortable performing):

Either (a) Create a batch file that contains the following commands (change the WP DIRECTORY to match the directory on your system):

    mode con lines=25
    c:\wp61\wp
    exit

On the line that launches WP, you can add any command-line switches that you use with WPDOS, such as /r or /dl. The batch file can also include any other commands that you want to run before WPDOS is launched. Save the batch file in your WP directory with a name like WIN2KWP.BAT. Now, return to the desktop, right-click on your WPDOS desktop shortcut, choose Properties, and go to the Program tab. In the Cmd Line field, enter the full path of your new batch file. Click OK to exit the Properties sheet. Use this shortcut to run WPDOS.

I strongly recommend that you apply to this shortcut the technique described elsewhere on this site for setting memory and other options for batch files under Windows 2000 or XP. After applying this technique so that you can modify the options of the shortcuts, apply the same memory options that you may already have applied to a WPDOS shortcut, or FOLLOW the suggestions found elsewhere on this site for customizing your WPDOS shortcut.

... or (b) Right-click on your WPDOS shortcut, choose Properties, go to the Screen tab, and select Window (not Full screen). Click OK and LAUNCH the shortcut. Either click on the icon in the upper-left corner of the WPDOS window or press Alt-Space; this opens the "context menu" of the window. Choose Properties, and go to the Layout tab. Change the Screen Buffer Size and Window Size to a height of 25. Click OK, then select "Save properties for future window." Exit WPDOS and close the window. Right-click on the WPDOS shortcut again, choose Properties, go to the Screen tab, and select Full-screen (not Window).

Somewhat surprisingly, you may get slightly more memory for WPDOS with method (a) than with method (b).

I would think these should work for your DOS-based accounting program

Good Luck

Solve : Unable to Download?

Answer»

My computer is a Dell with Intel Pentium II processor 299 MHz, 288 MB of RAM running Microsoft Windows XP PROFESSIONAL Version 2002 Service Pack 2. I am trying to download programs to check for Virus, SpyWare and also other files from the INTERNET. Each time I try to do this I get a screen that pops up and tells me the amount of time left and the size of the file but there is never any information in here and the little bar never fills up and then finally I get a message that says the site I am trying to download from is not available. I use to be able to do these things but recently I restored my system because I was having some other trouble and now everything is messed up. I also am not able to keep any "cookies" I have to retype everything each time I go to a site.  Any ideas? That's pretty MUCH the minimum requirement for XP.

A full reinstall would fix it, but if that is not an option you may already be infected. If you go to www.trendmicro.com and try the free online scan you will get an idea about this.

Then set all IE settings to default and try again.

Solve : ME Desktop Icons?

Answer»

I am trying to help an 85 year old friend that has ME, and I know nothing about this operating system.  The problem is, she HIT a button (doesn't know which one) and all the icons on the DESKTOP are now in a 3 x 3 box that is called "Desktop".  How do I restore these icons back to the desktop?  Also, the picture she had on the desktop switched to something else.  Hers will appear while the computer is booting up, but when the reboot is finished, a different picture shows.  I also have tried doing a restore from a previous date, but the computer is running so slow, it won't do a restore.  It took four days for the computer to finally do a defrag.  Please help!!  Thank you.Does she have the Windows ME CD?  A FORMATTING of the hard drive and fresh installation of Windows would the best solution here.  If possible, backup any files she would not WANT to lose.  She does have the disk for ME installation.  But what is needed for formatting the hard drive?  This is a first for me.  Thank you so much for your quick response.I've never done the procedure for Windows ME, but I believe it's simliar to Windows 98.  If so, you need to create a boot or startup disk, on floppy disk.  You will insert it into the floppy drive and then start the computer.  This will give you the format command.

This reference should be helpful: HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS ME.  I believe you can skip the part about partitioning unless you want to CHANGE the existing partition(s) on the drive.  If not, then skip that part and go to the directions on formatting and proceed.

A note on the Startup Disk: She may already have a startup disk that came with the computer.  If not, create one by going to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and click on the Startup Disk tab.  Click on the Create Disk button.  Again, I'm referring to Win 98SE, so this may not apply to Win ME.

Is her Windows ME CD one that came with the computer?  If so, it should have the device drivers needed for sound, video, USB, modem, etc.  If it's a Microsoft CD with just Windows ME, one that perhaps did not come with the computer, you will probably need to obtain various drivers and install them after installing Win ME.

Solve : explorer.exe reboots upon opening a folder.?

Answer»

For some reason, whenever I open a normal folder (USING Ctrl+O in programs will open the mini-browser SORT of thing just fine, THOUGH) explorer.exe reboots, and, in doing so, denies me access to the folder. It displays no error messages; the taskbar/startbar just disappears and reappears, as do the desktop icons. I watched the process in the task manager, and it does indeed kill the process, and then run it again. I did that manually, I ran AVG anti-virus, Spyware Search-and-Destroy, Ad-Aware Pro, and Eusing Registry cleaner, all to no avail.

I don't remember much of my computer's specifications, and since I cannot get to my control panel, I can't tell you much. What I do know somewhat is I'm using an HP Compaq Presario Notebook, running Windows XP Home edition. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon XPRESS 200. My processor is an AMD Turion64 or something.  I *think* I have two sticks of RAM, at 512MB each, giving me a total of 1GB. I think my hard drive is SATA, and it holds ~60 GB.

I can't fit my HijackThis! log, copy+paste-wise, on here, since I have an annoying character limit. I took the liberty of attaching it here, although I had to put it in a zip file since the forum here hates me, clearly...but I digress.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated, and I thank you for your time.Awesome, the kitchen sink is all we were missing here at CH
I had a look at your log, there's nothing that seems out of place to me.
Hopefully a HJT expert will be along shortly and can confirm what's good or bad in there, as I'm not quite certain.
What happened before this problem started, or has it always been like this?
And what OS is this? Are you able to go into Device Manager? I'm wondering if there's something wrong with one of your drivers, particularly the video driver.

Gizmo73Well, thanks for the help, everyone, but I just did a system restore of two days earlier and everything's fine now.

I want to remove my name from the file because I don't want my personal details visible ... is this possible?

Solve : USB Flash Drive not recognized?

Answer»

Computer doesn't recognize flash drive in USB port.
Running WinXP Pro SP2; have multiple (6) USB ports; no problem with portable device Kingston 512mb 2.0 Flash Drive (recognized in wife's WinXP Home computer); no problem with power managment on multiple USB ports; front side USB ports are 500ma and device requires 200ma; device manager indicates all USB devices working properly (except stick, which shows exclamation point for device conflict); all troubleshooter messages indicate that this device needs no driver, but installer gives me "code 28" (driver not installed); updating driver yields "none better found"; uninstalling driver has no effect; no driver(s) included with device purchase package; no support available from Kingston website; problem occurs in all USB ports, front and REAR - device not recognized when plugged in. I succeeded in updating Intell drivers for USB ports, but this hasn't helped. I have two USB ports utilized: digital camera and a Lexmark printer.
I recall a past problem with WinXP Pro not allowing two printers to be plugged in (recognized/open) at once. Could this be a similar/same problem?
Scratching my head! :-?Try uninstalling the drivers and then plugging the drive back in so new drivers are installed.Have you tried it with all other USB devices unplugged ? ?

patio.   8-)have you tryed checking your device manager whie it is plugged in and even seeing if the computer reconises it at all, even as an unreconized device. Thanks for previous replies, mcf747, patio and calum.
I have unistalled drivers through Device Manager and rebooted with memory stick inserted while x2 other USB devices unplugged. Same drivers/controller auto reinstalled. No change.
Device Manager recognizes memory stick with exclamation mark superimposed over question mark. (As I understand, this indicates a problem with device and drivers.) Device Manager auto refreshes and sees this device when unplugged and replugged.
Additional info: Root hub driver is signed MS Windows Publisher 7/1/2001 (5.1.2600.2180) and Intel 82801EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller-24DD is signed MS Publisher 6/11/2002 (5.1.2600.0). I understand my USBs are 2.0 but if I'm mistaken and there only 1.0, wouldn't the Enhanced Host Controller compensate? Besides, I don't believe this would prevent drive letter assignment and RECOGNITION, only data transfer performance.
I did a search regarding drivers. Came up with two possibilities: 1) Reload drivers/controllers on motherboard and 2) apply possible MS Hotfix (MS article 892050). Neither of which appeals to me. Lots of work and worry for someone at my level of expertise.
Other suggestions? :-?Right click My Computer...select Manage then Disk Management...doesa it show up there ? ?
If so use the tools there to format it then power down and re-boot and see if it picks it up.

patio.   8-)Patio,
No, none of the 3 USB devices show up there (printer, digital camera cable and memory stick). x2 hard drives (C and backup f), CD & DVD drives show up.Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager....scroll to the bottom where the USD Hubs a nd roots are listed. Right click on each one and select "remove"

You will get an error message ...Ignore it.

Power down. Plug in the USB stick and power up....what happens now ? ?

patio.  8-)Thanks for your reply, patio.
I tried your suggestions without improvement.
I decided to utilize MS and Kingston Tech Support as much as possible on this issue and I was able to get MS support for free because I had installed a Hotfix. After NUMEROUS hours on the phone, trying various things with current XP SP2, including uninstall and reinstall SP2, it was suggested that the next LOGICAL step would be to uninstall SP2 and do XP reinstall. I did uninstall SP2, but ran an XP repair, instead.
That apparently has done the trick! As the second Kingston Tech Rep stated, I didn't have the Win drivers installed (actually, what I think he meant was, the Kingston drivers supplied to MS, and included in SP2, were either missing or corrupted).
I would never have succeeded in figuring out which driver(s) were involved and obtaining. Kingston Techs were not forthcoming with drivers, nor was MS (of course). However, I do have to say that the techs were pleasant, as helpful and patient as anyone could hope.
Thanks again. Happy ending, for now.
sbneanderthalSo are you now able to re-install SP2 ? ?

Glad you are sorted ...Thanks for asking, patio.
Yes, everything up to speed and, so far, working well.
sbneanderthal  what fixed it?mcf747,
The best answer I can give is: running a repair of WinXP which required an uninstall of SP2 prior. (This was in lieu of doing a full reinstall of XP.)
sbneanderthal  Travel to the NLite site for complete instructions on slipstreaming SP2 and all current hotfixes into an XP CD so you won't have to do it the hard way next time...

Solve : Where can I find details about Task Manage ??

Is there a concise source of information to get details on individual entries there

as I have ALSO found out that these are pertinent to computer functions, etc.

but have searched Windows Help with no results, I have gone to the

internet and searched for example, the image NAME under processes in

Windows Task Manager, . . .hcpcsvcd.exe, and have minimal non discript

information.

JpHere's one good source of info on processes: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/.  If you don't find what you're looking for there, you'll just have to search for other sources.  hcpcsvcd.exe is not listed there and I believe this is probably an indication that it's very unusual.  And, indeed, a Google search on hcpcsvcd.exe yields very little.

Have you done a full hard drive scan for viruses recently?  No, I haven't, as I have previously accessed links from this forum, (http://www.destroyadware.com/articles/removal/), and am only aware of the process of reviewing the programs in the Task Manager, and that
certain precautions should be taken when deciding which programs are uneeded or unfriendly, . . so I'm just now starting to appraise these, the one in mention when viewing the Task Manager Processes, . . I have now checked, (hcpcsvcd.exe), and could not find it ??  I do not know what to make of that ?
Appreciate your time and effort, thank you.

patio.   8-)Hey Patio,
I'll give it a try.
Thanks Alot.
JpI have found the term usage as in the following quote;

"usage would hit 100 or other high numbers and stay that way, bouncing between the two numbers."

I checked CH Dictionary and there is no definition,, I am on a learning mission  for Windows Task Manager, . . .the above qoute, concerns usage and a bouncing scale, sorry I don't have any idea what it is, will appreciate information.
Jp....... The running object, hcpcsvcd.exe  , isn't a good thing as far as I can see .
I think it is there as the result of some nasty ..........
It might be a good idea to post a hijackthis log file for us to have a look at .

Whoa di65,

glad to !  , . . . what direct me to or define hijackthis log file ?

Jp

Thanks Dl65,

I just found hijack this and will get back to you asap.

JpYes, I have found the DOWNLOAD for HiJack this, but before I do anything I have a question.

When I posted this topic at the start, I came from my Task manager file and there it was, . . hcpcsvcd.exe, now it's not there, . . I went to search for it in my files and folders and it is not there either, does anyone have any idea where it might have disappeared to ?dl65,
Are you still there I went to Hyjack and scanned there were no bad files,
however I also down loaded Reistry Booster and found 307 files or bad paths etc.

I'm not sure why this did not show up in the HyJack Scan ?

But can I trust the register booster to leave my computer still working if I click fix?
Jp.....  Have you checked your Email , I sent you some screen shots ....

Now then , you said that you scanned with hijackthis and there were no bad files ....how did you determine that ? ( hijackthis simply logs what running ) it doesnt fix anything until you tell it to .

dl65  Jp.....  probably whats happened is you may have stopped it with the task manager ,however it may surface again ( because there is / or was a registry entry )

Registry booster isnt fully functional in the trial mode, it will only remove /fix 15 errors ..... If you want to do all of them you must pay ....... or have you already done that ?

dl65  dl65..........

I went to Process library.com ,and ran the scan, I meant to say the files were all safe, under security. so now I need to know what is broke, in that case,.. how does one do that ?

Jp

Jp ....... how about posting a new hijackthis log ....that should tell us what you want to know .

Solve : Help and Support Center page needs help?

Answer»

Help and Support Center page needs help. Opens up extremely slow now that a clean install has been done. At one point the H&S Center page would not open. System restore would not work. Defragmenter could not finish all files. Restarting the computer did help. This has been happening since a complete cleanup done to erase, zero, reformat and reinstall all programs needed for normal operation... if there ever is a normal operation. These problems occurred after MS updates and .net FRAMEWORK installed .NET 1, SP and 2 installed. All items working properly prior to updates and the .NET install. It wasn’t that bad erasing everything, zeroing , reformatting and putting WXP HE back on. That was a lot faster than fishing for much needed help that does not appear to be anywhere around without a substantial fee. Thank you for allowing the post. :-?Go to Start --> run --> type services.msc and press enter.
Check if the help and support service is set to manual or disabled, if it is set it to Automatic.  Then reboot and see how it is.
If that doesn't help, try uninstalling the .NET framework and see if it's any better - you can always reinstall it.
Hopefully that will help narrow down the problem.
Is this a genuine copy of Windows?Dell Forum sent me this... http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm

Where was he at 2 daze ago. I sure could have used this information then. Early this morning I just used my Win CD and reinstalled. The Help and Support page now snaps into position. Actually my wife’s computer is doing the same thing. So I am going to use this suggestion on it. It is an HP. I had to reinstall the Anti Virus program again but it was worth it.. I’ll let you know if it helps the HP. So far everything is running much faster which I didn’t know could happen. What I mean I didn’t know this near lightening speed happened. Runs better now than the day I got it. HOPE I don’t jinx myself and something starts acting up. Thank you everyone for the help.
That's helpful, I didn't even know you could do that.
Reinstalling Windows is a bit drastic but would solve any software related problem.
As GX1 likes to say, a reformat and reinstall solves all Windows problems, at least for a while.
Glad you're fixed up and thanks for posting back.
Hopefully that will help the HP too, let us know how it goes.IE7 renders Help and Support Center page unresponsive. After downloading and installing IE 7 the Help and Support Center page began acting up again with stalls and unresponsiveness. So I uninstalled IE7 and all is well again. Another user WARNED me the IE7 was the culprit and they were so very right. I am TAKING IE7 off of all my friends and families computers. This is so unfortunate.   Is there a way to find out what is causing the problem since IE7 was installed after a completely clean install of Windows before Any software was added? Thanks again for all the help.

Solve : Newbie!! BlueSOD please help?

Answer»

I'm sure most of you have read loads of postings about different errors causing SOD. I have spent most of yesterday TRYING to find relevant help but I'm struggling. I've started having different stop errors and thought I may have found the problem event to post the detail on and then a new one appeared today. The first was DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with parameter 1 0x05ac0018, 2=0x00000016,3= 0x00000000, 4= 0xf6a4183f. The only event error was id:7000 from the service control manager about a parallel port driver service failing to start because it was disabled or had no enabled devices:

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 7000
Source: Service Control Manager
Version: 5.0
Symbolic Name: EVENT_SERVICE_START_FAILED
Message: The %1 service failed to start due to the following error:
%2.

Then today I had:

Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 1003
Source: System Error
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: ER_KRNLCRASH_LOG
Message: Error code %1, parameter1 %2, parameter2 %3, parameter3 %4, parameter4 %5.

Explanation
A blue screen (Stop error) was reported. The message contains details about the error. A matching event with Event ID 1001 might also appear in the event log. This matching event displays information about the specific error that occurred.

The SOD read stop error 0x000000d1 (0x00009004,0x00000002,0x000000000, 0xee65df0c)

I am not technically proficient so unfortunately you will have to treat me like a child.

So far I have downloaded a registry fix program and cleaned that up, downloaded belarc and found that I have a seagate hard drive. Then I REBOOTED with seatools and it said bad or missing command interpreter please enter a valid filename when scanning the virtual driver. I have down a memory test using the packard bell snapsys diagnostic and the message was:
[test]
[name]RAM Test[/name]
[problem]Ram error[/problem]
[/test]

What do I do now??
Please, please help
p.s It is a laptop if that makes a difference.
If that is not a Packard Bell machine www.memtest86.com has a free, bootable RAM tester. Try that.

If the RAM is OK, we can proceed from there. If not, that is the starting point.

You have done your homework well. What are the specifics of the machine? How old?

What preceeded all of this? Is it non-functional now? You said you ran a registry cleaner. Why?Thanks for the reply GX1_Man.
I have the following information which I hope will give you a better picture. Unfortunately it is a packard bell laptop so I guess no memtest then?
I realised what the problem was with seagate as I hadn't disabled the drivers for my internal cd disk drive (which gave up the ghost about 14 MONTHS after buying the machine, I now use an EXTERNAL freecom drive). This stopped the command interpreter problem.
After disabling the drivers the and rebooting the seagate ran and I did the advanced scan which came up with the following errors:
Bad sector LBA: 14084905
Bad sector LBA: 14216134
It offered to try and repair the bad sector but or now I chose no.
The system info for my computer is :
OS Name      Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version      5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer      Microsoft Corporation
System Name      BABYHATTON
System Manufacturer      Packard Bell NEC
System Model      EasyNote M5xx
System Type      X86-based PC
Processor      x86 Family 15 Model 2 STEPPING 9 GenuineIntel ~2664 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date      Insyde Software Corporation V1.06, 13/11/2003
SMBIOS Version      2.3
Windows Directory      C:\WINDOWS
System Directory      C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device      \Device\HarddiskVolume2
Locale      United Kingdom
Hardware Abstraction Layer      Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"
User Name      BABYHATTON\DAN
Time Zone      GMT Standard Time
Total Physical Memory      512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory      103.20 MB
Total Virtual Memory      2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory      1.96 GB
Page File Space      1.10 GB
Page File      C:\pagefile.sys

I don't think much of the above is relevant.
The problem started last December and as the event id 7000 kept showing up I thought it had something to do with that. The windows error reporting thought it might have something to do with a faulty or poorly written driver.
The computer is still functional it chrashed twice yesterday. I ran the registry cleaner because I am a layman and thought it might help. The machine is about three years old I think.
Hope you can help.
Thanks

Solve : Problem with opening D Drive?

Answer»

I have Windows XP. Recently I got a virus so I decided to reinstall windows. I moved everything I wanted to keep onto D drive, and deleted C drive and re-partitioned it into C Drive and F Drive. I then reinstalled windows and all my programs onto C. I didn't touch D during this whole process.

Now, whenever I click on D drive to open it. Windows displays a message saying: "Please GO to the control panel to install and configure system components." I have to right click and SELECT open from the MENU to access the drive.

I have already tried looking for autorun.inf and deleting it, but I can't FIND any file like that on D drive. How do I fix this problem? It's really annoying.Oh. And in case anyone was wondering. C, D, & F are all partitions on the same disk.Symptoms

When you double-click a drive letter (hard disk) from My Computer, you may see any of the FOLLOWING error messages:

Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components

Windows cannot find Autoplay.exe

You'll also see that Autoplay is the default context menu when you right-click the drive.
Resolution

This happens if there is a file named Autorun.inf in the drive's root directory. Right-click the drive and choose "open", look for this file Autorun.inf and delete it. Restart Windows.

If the Autorun.inf line reads the following, the first error message is displayed:

[autorun]
open=Setup.exe

C:\Windows\System32\Setup.exe is launched actually

If the Autorun.inf line reads the following, the second error message is displayed:

[autorun]
open=Filename.exe

(where the filename.exe file is missing)
More Information

The file Autorun.inf is not intended to be on the hard drive root folder. They are used in CD-ROMs (to launch CD programs automatically). What exactly did you copy to D: and what method did you use ? ?

Solve : Crazy Spyware/Virus...no clue how to get rid of it?

Answer»

I have tried multiple free and purchased spyware removing programs and virus scan programs and this virus or whatever the heck it is will not go away. Basically Its just random advertisements and popups, and sometimes its just the sound from the popupwindows. It is relly annoying having to listen to the same ad for some random company. Not sure what this is or how serious the damage COULD be but I really have no clue on what to do about this virus...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

My Computer (built by myself):
AMD 4200+ X2 2x512 cache
Barebones case which included motherboard and 240watt power supply
7900GT GeForce 265mb video card
two Hard drives 250gbSATA and 400gbPATA
Sony 16x DVD/CD RW driveDLoad and run a little ditty called Shoot the Messenger.
Post the programs you have run to get RID of the annoyances.

And possibly your OS as well.I think it's an spyware, adware and malware. Scan your PC with Anti-Spyware. Try to download this Anti-Spywares, adwares and malwares "Spybot- SEARCH and Destroy" http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1 and SmitfraudFix http://securityticker.blogspot.com/2006/05/easy-fix-for-spyware-and-virus-alert.htmlI still havent fixed the problem of random music and ads playing through the speakers its really frustrating, and at this point multiple ads will stack on top of each other and play like 2 or 3 advertisements at once. Still not sure what to do.
concericus77........ Perhaps you get let us in on ........
What operating system are you using ?
Exactly what malware scanners have you actually run ?
Have you run these scans in normal or safe mode ?
Can you take a screen shot of the pop ups your getting ?

In short , assist us to assist you .

dl65  I'm Using Windows XP Professional w/ SP2 and I have used SpywareBot, Ad-Aware Professional, McAfee Anti-Virus, and a University Software that is supposed to help with viruses. I've run all of these scans in normal mode. The MAIN things are popups, warning messages, and lots of advertisement dialogue (actuall sound coming out of my speakers that I described earlier), now there are multiple windows that ask me to install foreign lanuage software???,  and also the popup windows often have two or three scrollbars on the right side which I thought was odd. Also everytime I scan even if its like a few minutes after I have supposedly "deleted" the viruses from the previous scan it will still find more viruses, or trojans or whatever the heck they are. Hopefully this is enough information to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with?...thanks again.

concericus77......  ok ...we're getting there , but the screenshot is so SMALL that I cant read it ....... Could ypu please post one thats a large enough to read.
Also what viruses are being found that cannot be deleted ? The same question applies to the trojans ....which ones ........?

Try this ......D/L ...ewido/avg antispyware   ........ v7.5
once its installed ,
Turn off system restore ....... then reboot into safe mode ........
Run the anti virus scan and the the AVG antispyware remove anything thats found .
Reboot back into normal mode and see how things are , if they are still not right ..... D/l hijackthis and scan your machine , save the log file and post it here for us to examine.

Solve : Problems viewing video?

Answer»

Hey guys I wasn't totally sure where to post this so apologies if this is the wrong forum.

My problem is basic but I haven't found a solution after hours of going through help PAGES and troubleshooters: whenever I try to play a video file (with any application) my PC goes extremely slow until I exit the application (if I can ACTUALLY exit at all! sometimes I have to restart my computer).

I recently upgraded from a 5900XT gfx card to a 6800XT - COULD this have anything to do with it? Graphics in gaming work perfectly WELL though.

I've attached a full dxdiag report. If there's any other info you need please let me know. THANKS a lot for your help  Try updating your graphics drivers.
What are you using to play the video files, and what format are they?cpu, memory, and graph card specs plz Quote

cpu, memory, and graph card specs plz
Check the dxdiag report. onearmedbandit....... Just had a fast look at your dxdiag report ...and nothing jumped out ........
Is this issue something that has always been there ...or did it start as soon as you changed the vid card ?

Do you have this slow down with anything else ?  Music ?
Do you have the latest updates installed for XP pro ?
Which version of WMP are you using ?
Have you tried the player from VLC ?

dl65

Hey, sorry I haven't replied to any of your comments. My internet went down and I've only just got it back  :-/

dl65:
The issue didn't arise until about a week after I'd upgraded my card. I'm not experiencing any problems with other forms of media, and I've tried it on all my video applications (including VLC).

I have tried updating to the latest graphics drivers too.Do you have the latest Windows updates?
What are you using to play the files, other than VLC?
What versions?
The problem occurs with all formats of video files, correct?
And all sizes too?Latest windows updates - yes.

Other apps - WMP, winamp, creative playcentre ... not sure about the versions. Happens with all formats & sizes, yes.

Although I can watch online videos off youtube etc.

Solve : Encrypted folder won't after restore the system?

Answer»

Hello, I have a problem. I create a password for my own login. Today my computer is down and I can not back up files. So I restore my system with the option of leaving my files intact. I still remember the password, and try to find way to unlock the folder, but I can not. Any can help me out with this?Which files are you trying to open?
Are you logged on as the user you used before?I don't know but I believe after the restore, the new login is DIFFERENT. The OLD login BECOME a file in the hard drive call document and SETTINGS. The old login files is the one I want to open. Can you log in as the old user?I don't know how to login as the old user. There are only new logins on my computer right now.Have a read here:

Solve : no color?

Answer»

Hello!

First of all, thanks for your time and consideration for helping me out.

I'll get to the point then. About three months ago, color vanished from my computer. The color red, and all colors that have red in it, pink, brown, orange, etc. So I can only see blue and green and yellow TINTS.. Why? How? I don't know.. I'm not quit sure in what category this problem falls,.. is it the monitor? or the screen? or the computer? The rest of my computer works okay ( I can't say fine, theres too much wrong with it..) But anyway, this is my main problem I would like to get it fixed.

For example: If I LOOK at a PICTURE of a red rose on my computerscreen, I cannot see the color red, it's blue- tinted or black.

Thanks again, I hope you can help ( anyone!!)

SofieI assume you are USING a CRT monitor. If that's the case, it's the monitor GOS bad. there are three electron guns in the monittor-R, G and B, the red gun is either burned out or the wire to the red gun turns loose. Time for a LCD monitor.

BI would download and install the latest drivers for the video.

You may also try the monitor on another computer.Check the wires for bent pin connectors. You would need to try that monitor on another computer and another monitor on this computer to isolate where the problem really is. A simple and free diagnostic. Post back with your findings.

Solve : I did a system restore - oops! Bad idea?

Answer»

I did a system restore (dont ask me why) and now my whole computer is playing up. My windows media player wont work, my nero is playing up and now my email wont work either.  I took it to a computer repairer but it DIDNT fix anything really. I have tried redownloading windows media player but it still wont recognise my music. I have media monkey now but prefer windows media player. Have I stuffed it all up by doing a system re-install and can I fix it? I tried undoing the system restore once I realised it had stuffed all my programmes but it didn't go back to the way it was. It kept coming up with an error - something to do with ddraw.dll......I tried to downlain Direct X as I read this might have something to with it,  but it came up with "you already have this program". I hate my computer right now - and myself for messing with it in the first place! What can I do?     elliemayne..... hmmmmmmmm  , why did you do the system restore in the first place ......... we don't just get out of bed ONE morning and say ..... what a great day to do a system restore ...... LOL ...... So what issues were you having ........  Then I'm trying to see the time line here .....you did the system restore , then you took ths pc to a shop ...... and they did nothing ? ( a little odd ) ...... then you tried to or d/l  direct x ........ WHY ?

how about some answers ....lol

dl65  Ok. Well - the whole story - brother in law thinks he knows everything about computers and downloaded all this spyware crap on my computer and fiddled around with it. So I read on the net that you can do a system restore and I thought it would take my computer back to how it was before my brother in law touched it and get rid of the crap he put on it.  Then my Windows Media wouldn't work, Ares wouldn't work. I thought *censored* what have I done? So tried to undo the system restore  and when that didn't work I took it to a repairer, they charged me a $110 to look at it, siad my hard drive was about to die and replaced it still under warranty. The repair man did a re-install or something, and when I got it back Windows still doesnt work, Ares will download songs but you cant play them on Ares, and now my email wont work. It worked perfectly before brother in law touched it.elliemayne........ ok ...... How about what kind of a machine are we talking about ? I gather it's pretty new.
Do you have any idea what sort of "crap" your brother-in -law downloaded and installed ?
You now mention that you had the Hard drive replaced , was that before all these issues or after ?
Who formatted the new hard drive and installed the operating system on it ?
What operating system is installed ?
Does that O/S have all the latest updates ?
You also mention that your Email doesnt work ..... what are you using for Email ?
You mention that WMP doesnt work , which version are you using ?
You mention Nero isn't working properly , which version are you using ?
What browser are you using ?
Does it work ok ?
What else is working perfectly on your machine ?
Do you have a anti virus installed and which one are you using ?

Please let us know

dl65

MAN! What a mess, as an IT guy myself, I don't trust any of these so called computer repairmen. Did they do a clean installation on you new HARDDRIVE? Did they TRANSFER any data from your old harddrive?
Since you already spent the money, you should take it back and ask them to do it right this time without extra charges. Unless you have other hardware issue, a new drive and a clean system reinstallation should not cause any problem, (hard to imaging anyone would screw up a system installation).

B.Spyware protection is useful, but if you did not want the programs he installed, you should have used their uninstaller programs rather than a system restore. I am a bit sceptical about the dying harddrive bit.. sounds like a cop-out answer from them.I agree with BAYERN. If you paid your money and it didn't work when you got it back you should have taken it back immediately, but now would be the next best time. Request either a refund or a working computer, which is what they charged you for.

How long has it been since this "repair"?

"  In the "Use Source" block on this error message it has the digit "1"  When I click on "OK" I get the message "The path '1' can not be found.  Verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package Tray App.msi in a folder from which you can install the product Tray App."  I have recently installed some software for a small digital camera.  I have attempted to erase and re-install this software and it has not made a difference.  I have done a reinstall on my computer and it has not helpe.  Eveytime my PC is started these error messages appear and I can not get the Tray Apps error message and the Tray Apps "Preparing to install" off of the display.  Any and all help would be appreciated.  I am not very knowledgeable about computers so you will need to keep it simple.  Thanks in advance to anyone that can assist or help.  Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.  John  :-?Are you using a printer? If so have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your
printer?Hi John ,
It sounds like some software that was recently installed didnt completely install or the install failed for some reason. It sounds like it could be the digital camera installation.
There is probably some entry in the registry that is triggering these installers to be continually in your face .
I would try the following :
Go into "My computer" , C drive , Program files ....... and see if there is any folders in there that are related to the digital camera install....... there may be several .... LOOK at the cds that came with the camera for their names.   if you find any ,see if you can manually delete them .

Then go to ..........  http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/  and download the latest version of ccleaner. .......  Its listed over on the right side.

Note do not install the yahoo toolbar it offers .
Once its installed ......... OPEN ccleaner .......... now click on the cleaner icon ( it looks like a wide paint brush .  then down in the lower right corner click on RUN CLEANER .....  when it's finished, click on run cleaner again you will see a message about things being deleted ....answer ok ......... after it runs , go back over to the upper left corner and click on the "issues" icon , then over in the right pane ..... click on "scan for issues"  it will scan and a list of issues will appear , now click "fix issues" ........ you will be prompted to backup the registry ..... answer yes ....... and then click fix all selected issues and the "ok" .....
Just so you know John , ccleaner will not remove anything that would cause problems for your machine. It is very safe and easy to use.

let us know if that gets rid of any of the messages you are seeing.

dl65  jbre1.......  Just been doing some looking and the issue with the trayapp.msi seems to be related to HP printers and cameras .
I see you have a hp priinter , by any chance is the camera HP as well?

dl65
No, the camera is a $10 digital that my wife got me for Christmas to play around with.  It's made by that famous guy China.     But you are right about the HP being the problem.  I reinstalled the software for my printer and that has seemed to solve the problem.  It appears that a Microsoft Reader (part of the HP Program - I don't know) was the problem.  I really appreciate the assist.  As I recall, last week (I think it was last week) I began to download something from HP and then cut it off in the middle of the D/L and that may have caused the problem.  Thanks again (a million) and I hope there will be something I can do for you some day (need anything made from wood?).    John in El PasoHi John ,

Well done ....... something like that can be a real nuisance .......
Glad to have been of some assistance.

dl65  Tray Apps..........Usually go with a printer error.   Geez, here I go again.  I booted (started) my PC this morning and there we are again - I have the dialog box from Microsoft.NET Framework, Windows Installer, and the Tray App in my face again.  Yesterday I cleaned out and reinstalled eveything to do with my HP Printer and I thought that solved the problem.  After I did it, I restarted the PC and everything seemed normal.  Now this morning I have the problem back.  Does anyone have a gun - I want to shoot this thing. Solve : Floppy driver not reading in Windows?

Answer»

I recently reformatted my computer.
However, after reinstalling Windows 98 SE, the floppy DRIVE no longer READ properly. It freezes the entire SYSTEM for about 5 minutes before failing.

If I boot up into dos from the CD, I can see the floppy drive correctly.
Moreover, the floppy drive is the first drive to check for booting, and is checked. The problem starts when I'm in windows, or a dos-prompt from windows.

Hopefully somebody has seen this before.
Using a IBM 2178 50UHave you went to the control panel to the device manager double click on your floppy disk CONTROLLER,then when the floppy appears..right click delete and then reboot?

Normally if that don't WORK you have a failing floppy drive,or bad connections
to the drive.

Solve : Win 2k on 32MB RAM?

I just got a copy of Windows 2000 Pro and I'm going to install it on my little brother's laptop (150MHz Pentium, 32MB RAM, 2GB HD). Will it perform horribly on these specs? I've never worked with Windows 2000 before. Thanks!

-JohnIt won't be any good.I suspected since microsoft says the minimum requirements for ram is 64MB
But hey I'll install it for the HECK of it anyway as an experiment
Thanks!
-JohnI hope you have ENOUGH hard DRIVE space.  These little experiments sure are fun...His little brother will be going to college by the time it boots up.hahaha actually it's not that bad... although it took 3 hours(!) to install it runs surprisingly smooth... it's a bit slow but i'll upgrade the ram eventually. It took me a little bit of searching to find Mwave drivers for Windows 2000 but i think it runs fine (this little machine has never been fast). Thanks!

-Johnjkpj13, here's a gift for you:

It's about 1/12 the file SIZE your file, and yet looks better.    All I ask is that you save it to your hard drive and then host it wherever you would normally host your avatar; in other words, don't just link to it from my photobucket account. Thanks soybean i was thinking about resizing it anyway.

Solve : Multiple symptoms, I'm confused?

Answer»

Admittedly, I'm a computer idiot and I wasn't quite sure which section to even post this question because I'm not sure what the PROBLEM is...

After not turning my system on for two weeks while I was on vacation, I come back to have several issues.  First, the soundcard is not working.  I GET messages saying that my soundcard is in use when no other programs are running.  I've run spywear programs to (spybot, adaware, registry cleaner) see if anything was running in the background, but no love.  Then my system froze a couple of times and I had to restart.  I tried a system restore to the point before when I left since it was working fine, but it was unsuccessful. When it was supposed to restart, it would not despite me leaving for an hour, the harddrive indicator light was still on and I had to manually turn the system off.  Then I noticed on startup that there is a new BEEP that was never there before, and the usual startup screen (POST? i think - the one that shows things loading and hardware that is detected) isn't there anymore before the Windows logo appears. I tried defragmenting the harddrive and doing a SCANDISK since I didn't really know what else to do and the owner's manual said to give it a shot.  Oh, and I checked the log today in safe mode and there is an entry about multiple drivers failing to load (probably why there's no sound?).  Anyway, if anyone can make sense of this, please help.  Sorry for making it so long, I just wasn't really sure what might be relevent or important.  Thanks for taking the time to help! What is the computer or motherboard make/model? How old? What version of Windows?

It's an Emachines T4510 (Yea, I know...but I've never had any problems with it in the past).  I'm running Windows XP home edition.  Also yesterday this thing wouldn't START up at all when I tried to power it on.  Then fan would start, but nothing else would happen for most of the day.  Then all of a sudden, it starts just fine today.  I really hope my hardware isn't failing and that its a software issue I can fix somehow, but I have a feeling this is probably something pretty bad.Get a replacement power supply as soon as possible before the existing one destroys the motherboard!.

E-machines put suicide bomber power supplys in their computers that fail and destroy the motherboard after a year and a half to 2 years.

No, im not kidding!, I have an E-machines T-2642, my original motherboard was murdered last year.Oh wow.  Yea, I've had this for a few years now.  Any way of knowing what kinda damage has already been done though, or if it is reversable if I do get a new power supply? If it still boots up then it hasent killed the board yet, just goto your local computer store and spend at least 50bucks on a good power supply (spend a little extra to get something of quality in the 400watt+ range) 20 dollar power supplys are the leading cause of damaged motherboards/processors/vidcards ect besides user error.

This has been an ongoing problem with Emachine computers, they put the cheapest power supplys they can find in their systems.

Have a look at these consumer complaints
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/emachine.htm
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/emachine_power.htmlYou're right, I did see a number of complaints online about the power sourse frying and killing the motherboard, so I went and bought a new one today.  But SADLY, the same problems still exist.  No sound (error message saying something else is using the soundcard) and now I'm getting a POWER SURGE ON HUB PORT message over and over again for a USB Device (But I have no USB devices connected).  This message started yesterday prior to my installation of a new power source today.  If there's anything else I can try, I'd appreciate someone letting me know.If there are physical errors... We hope the best for you. You need service - computer service.
I'm thinking now at power spikes... I hope you disconnected your computer from power plugs for the vacation. It does not matter if you were on vacation or not, but when you were it's suppossed you didn't need your computer working.

Solve : encryption software?

Answer»

Hello

I would like to download an ENCRYPTION software to protect my password when i am on wireless. Any free download or suggestions. ThanksWhat password? Your Windows password should be stored in your head.

More details would be needed to understand the real issue.Hello

I understand that when if i am LOGGED into an unsecured wireless network, anybody on that network can be watching what you're doing online

Advice to all laptop owners: to enable your laptop's encryption software that will scramble the data on your computer. Could you tell me how to do that

ThanksFrom the Robship:

A note about wireless networks

Currently, all wireless networks can be cracked.  The problem with wireless is that it's indiscriminate.  The signal is scattered, and anyone within range can pick it up.  CONTRAST that with wired networks, where you need some form of physical access in order to "enter" the network.

Once a wireless network has been detected, it is not difficult for someone with the knowhow to crack the network's encryption.  They then have access to all the resources on your network - and scarily they can do this from an unmarked van parked outside your HOUSE.  You may not even be able to detect the intrusion.

For this reason I strongly recommend that you USE maximum security if you have a wireless network.  Switch of file and print sharing, unless you're sure you need it.  If you need it, use very strong passwords.  Use software firewalls on all PCs, and it goes without saying, use reputable virus and spyware detection software and keep it up to date.

Solve : xp won't run?

Answer»

I have a recording studio in my home.  Computer based with a PowerSpec tower, AMD 64 (3.2Mhz), Cakewalk Home studio software,  MidiMan sound cards (3 for a total of 12 simultaneous tracks).  I put it together one layer at a time testing functionallity at each level and it is an awesome machine.

It's only use is studio, it's not on the net.  We used it last wednesday an it was perfect.  Sunday I went down to edit some tracks and work on a mixdown,  I pushed the power button and a DOS screen came up stating the XP would not start correctly, and offered 5 options.  Safe mode, Safe with command mode, Safe in network mode, last succesful start, or normal start of XP; none of which work.

I don't know much of XP,  on ME I would put in a start up disk and run Register fix or register repair.  But alas there is no DOS start up disk, and this tower doesn't have a 3.5 drive.

My guru friend says we should put the hard drive in a "hotbox" and dump it down to and external, then look at fix the errors, that way probably, we won't lose any files.

Time is of some importance, and I get tired of counting on friends to bail me out.

some additional facts are, I believe we hade a brown out sometime between studio session, as the modem, network hub and computers had to be re booted.  ALSO a 9V DC power adapter on a piece of gear blew a diode.  That's an unusual event.  DIODES are pretty tough.

any thoughts would be appreciatedYou can easily hook it up as a slave drive in another machine and backup your important data. There will be jumper settings on the HDD pay attention to these.

Then Travel Here and follow the instructions for a "repair" install of the APPROPIATE version of XP.

This will retain your programs and data however i would highly suggest BACKING up first.

Solve : XP explorer.exe unstable?

Answer»

I am having a major problem with explorer.exe. I have posted on this forum before, while ago, and since then realized that my explorer.exe program was acting up. On start up, i am able to log in, but from then i only get the desktop background. Opening the task manager, i find that explorer.exe is not in the running processes menu, and try to start it. Upon clicking "run", the start bar flickers into view for a 1/4 second, then disappears again. Task manager shows th the program was not running in the processes menu, yet there were no crash error message anywhere during the start up or attempted restarts. Another curious thing is that i am able to run other programs from CD or Flash drive, so i believe that the problem is only affecting explorer.exe.

I was running Windows XP home edition sp2 i believe, with an expired Norton Virus Scan Subscription and windows firewall deactivated. It is brand EMachine, model T2893. hmm, if anyone is willing to look through this and point out any problems i could try to fix, TYVM, and TY anyone who was willing to take the time to go through this.If you are not using Norton anymore I would uninstall that immediately with the directions privided on the Symantec site. You do not want or need two antiviruses running at the same time.

I would also lose Weatherbug pronto.

Have you done ALL of your scans in safe mode with system restore turned off? That is the best place to start.

try booting to safe mode
do the icons disappear in the safe mode
how to go there
reboot
tap F8 or del key on the keyboard
choose safe mode
login
if the icons appear normal
try going to start>run>msconfig
in the general tab
make it to selective startup
and in the startup tab
uncheck all
any file not working will not boot with the computer
and also go to services tab
hide all microsoft services
and uncheck other services
and then reboot
try see if it worksIf you can run a search for explorer.exe and find it in any FOLDER other than C:\Windows it is malware masquerading as the true explorer.exe

It often appears as C:\Windows\explorer\Explorer.exe. or explorer.EXE

Lots of INFO on the WWW

Good luckok dusty, since yours is the simplest, i think ill try it first. what folder should explorer.exe be in? just "C:\Windows"?Yes, just C:\Windows

Be aware that the malware version comes in several guises such as Explorer.exe, explorer.Exe, explorer.EXE etc... (note the use of upper case)  A version has been found in C:\Windows\System32.

Good luck

Solve : I screwed up bigtime?

Answer»

Brought home Husbands computer from work to replace an older computer on our home network.  New computer has XP professional.  Everything was going well, even had an internet connection through our router, but it wasn't being recognized on our network - so I started the process to get it on our network - realized it was on a domain, changed it to our home network - then the fun begins...

Required a restart - did that, then couldn't logon - password wouldn't work - couldn't get in through admin either - then I totally screwed up... (I now know I should have gotten rid of all the passwords first!!)

I stupidly decided to install XP Home SP2 from the disk from our other computer - thinking I could use uninstall, system recovery or safe mode to go back to XP Pro - in a word.. can't ..it's like it's a BRAND new computer with NOTHING else installed on it - in safe mode the only operating system listed is XP Home - can't get an internet connection - can't restore any further back than when I installed XP Home - can't uninstall Home - it's like everything that was on the computer before is totally gone - now just one QUESTION....

Am I totally screwed or will a professional be able to undo what I did???By installing an OS over your previous installation i'm afraid all your data is gone...
Sorry.

Did they do any backups at work on their machines ? ? You might want to find out.

patio.   8-)You need a copy of XP for each computer, Home or Pro doesn't make a difference. (I am assuming this computer is never going back to the office. To get the domain back would require assistance from the IT department there.)

Once you format and reinstall the new XP on there you can set up your connection from there. Everything previously loaded will be long gone. This sounds like what you have done.

You don't need a professional to make this a full time home computer. To get back any previous data could be a problem.

I'm sure they backup everything at the office - this computer was going to be home for good - had no plans on taking it back - but if I can get everything back that way - I'll take it back - so even with the amount of stupidity I displayed .... will doing this work?  - one other thing I forgot to mention - it's giving me the 30 day countdown to register - if I don't will it revert back?? (wishful thinking)Unless the new installation is on a new partition which i doubt, the OS will just time out after 30 days. It will not revert back to it's previous state.

patio.   8-)

p.s. If the workplace did backups to CD or DVD you wouldn't neccessarily have to take it back in, just ask them for backup disks for that machine and what program they use for the backups.
You might have to purchase that program...This XP Home you have just installed.. is that already installed on another computer, using the same serial key? If so, after 30 days, your computer will force you to register with Microsoft, but they will detect you are already used this XP Home on another computer and tell you off - assuming this is the case. You cannot legally install a particular copy of XP on as many computers as you like (how would they make their money?) unless you have a multi-user licence.

Did you format the computer? I think you did. If so, you cannot recover lost data without spending money on data recovery. If you don't mind the lost data, we can go ahead and begin to setup this computer to start working again. The first thing we need to do is install graphics drivers, and other drivers. The internet connection probably does not work due to lack of drivers. Ask the office if they have any CDs containing the drivers you need. Also see if they know your motherboard make and model, and the graphics card model.

Then we can progress from there.I doubt they will release a backup disk to me, they took off work related stuff when we took home the computer - the backup disk will have all that - so I'm just hoping they will use the backup disk, take off what they did the first time and maybe take off the passwords and domain also so I can't screw it up again - thanks for your help - I'm going to call the IT guy on Monday - I'm sure he will roll his eyes and tell me what a stupid thing I did!! Yup, as I said, I did a stupid thing, atleast Microsoft won't detect what I did since that computer isn't connected to the internet - I'm just going to let the IT guy take the computer back to how it was just before I took it home - safest thing to do I think - then maybe I will bring someone to my house that knows what they are doing to configure everything correctly -That sounds like an excellent plan.

I'm sure there is some geeky friend that would be glad to do it for dinner. Quote

Sign me up...i'm a SUCKER for a well cooked meal.Yeah!!  Called this morning and I'm going to pick up all the original cd's that came with the pc - INCLUDING the restore disk - so I'll be spending a bit of time downloading today - If it doesn't work I'll be pulling my hair out - no password is going on this computer ever again!!!!

Solve : DVD Writer Installation?

Answer»

I have installed a new LiteOn Model LH-18A1P186C  DVD Writer in my computer.
After INSTALLATION I can play Audio CDs , write to blank CDs but when viewing
DVDs cannot hear any sound. Any HELP appreciated

WIN XP SP2, 512Mb RAM 40G HDWhat are you using to play the DVDs?
You need some sort of codec or DVD playing program.
Are you sure the sound isn't muted or turned down?
Does this happen with all DVDs?Double-check all your settings in Control Panel/Sounds and Multimedia...All of the settings in Sounds/Audio in the control panel APPEAR to be correct, nothing is muted.

When I insert the DVD for playing, I am given the option to play the DVD with Windows Media Player.
I have never tried viewing a DVD in this manner.

Is a separate software program or codec required?

I thought it unusual that I have sound for my music CDs but not for the DVDs.

Yes, it happens on all DVDs.

ThanksYou can get just what you need here to use media player:

http://www.theorica.net/download.htm

Choose this one near the bottom of the page:

The Codecs 5.0 - 9x/ME/2000/XP (English)

You can also use VLC player, which is free here:

http://www.videolan.org/Thanks to all for your help!

The codecs download from Theorica.net did the job.
I now  have picture and sound from my DVDs.Glad you are all FIXED up and thanks for posting back.

Solve : Installing programs in Administrative Account?

Answer»

Hi everyone!

As Administrator on a computer with multiple-USER accounts, whenever I install or download new programs intended for personal use only, those same programs appear in the other users’ accounts. When the other users come to deleting the desktop icon(s) of the programs that I have installed, the desktop icon in the Administrator account is also deleted!

Is this NORMAL in Windows XP Pro SP2 or does it sound as though there is a problem with the way my Administrator and User Accounts have been set up?

Is there a way of installing or downloading programs in the Administrator Account only and that do not appear in other accounts?

I thank you for any suggestions.
When you install a program, USUALLY the icons will be in the All Users folder in Documents and Settings. So when one of your users deletes the icon, the icon will INDEED disappear off of everyones desktop. Just go to the program folder and find the programs that you need icons for and make a shortcut and move them to the desktop or to your folder in Documents and Settings/User/Desktop. Hope that Helps 8-).Thanks for the reply fffreak.

You've made for a little happier Nugz this evening!

Many Thanks
