Solve : Windows Media Center 2005 Recovery Console Disks?

Answer»

Hi, I own a Gateway Laptop MX6422 with WINDOWS Media Center 2005 in it. Some days ago I received the message "Unmountable Boot Volume" (The Blue Screen). In order to REPAIR this, (I think) I need to run the Recovery Console but I don't have the Windows CD. I SEARCH for the setup FLOPPY disks in the microsoft webpage but I don't find them. So I don't know what disks should I use. The disks for XP Home or XP Professional? SP1 or SP2?.

I have been trying with the Windows XP Pro SP2 disks and doing what this page says (http://my.opera.com/hippo1023/blog/show.dml/517459) because my laptop doesn't has a floppy unit. But this doesn't seem to work.

Any help?
ThanksDid the laptop ship with a recovery CD ? ?

I would contact Gateway if not...

patio.  8-)jojojosesese...... What happened to the install/restore disks that should have come with the machine ?
Thats what you need to do the repair .
Have you contacted gateway ?

dl65  No. The problem is that I bought it in the States but I live in Peru. So i guess I don't apply for technical support.jojojosesese.........

You are going to require .... Windows Media Center 2005  ....... not Win XP Pro

I don't have any of the install/restore disks. I don't know if I could ask Gateway to ship me the disks to here ( I should call them  ). In the case they couldn't send me the disks, Is there any other solution?

Buy them OUTRIGHT, but that's pretty expensive. Asking is free.

Solve : USB drives?

Answer»

I know this is about USB drives, but I think the problem is actually with my computer, or windows.

It started with my iPod; it just stopped recognizing it one day. I tried reinstalling it, ect, but nothing worked. Now I just got a digital camera for Christmas which won't work with my computer. I know it's not the ports themselves, becauseI have a wireless keyboard/mouse, and my internet are plugged into them and they work fine.

Has anyone had this problem at all and know how to fix it?What computer or motherboard make/model/ Where are the USB ports on your system? There may not be ENOUGH power on the front ports for all of this, while the back ones have more. Strange to say, butr they are NOT all the same. Are these all USB 2.0 ports? Operating system and service pack? Other issues with the machine? How many USB device are you using in total? Details please.I hope I am giving the right information here.

MOBILE AMD Athlon(tm) XP-M, 2800+, 2.13 GHz, 192MB of RAM

Windows XP, home ed, v. 2002, SP2

Two ports on the front and 2 on the back. (Tried all of them). All 2.0 as far as I know. I only use 2 at a time, just for my mouse/keyboard and the internet.

I'm positive it's a refurbished computer, but I have had it for a year before it stopped recognizing my iPod. It is as if it doesn't want to connect with anything that it has to transfer files to and from.  I can't even pin it to something specific because I wasn't doing anything or had installed anything around the time that it stopped working.

With both my camera and my iPod, they wil show up in the tray in the right hand corner, but not as the...E? drive in My Computer.Look in Device Manager in Control Panel/System and see if any exclamation marks are present to identify any problems. I would try the iPod in the back USB and the mouse/keyboard in the front ones for this drill. What happens now? Then remove the iPod and see if JUST the camera is functional in the same USB slot. Then do the whole procedure in the other.

It is important to eliminate all of the variables except one at a time to isolate where the problem really is.

This is a laptop or desktop? What is the make and model number of the computer or motherboard?
This is a laptop or desktop? What is the make and model number of the computer or motherboard?

There are no exclamation points, and plugging them in other places doesn't work/do anything different. It is a desktop. I can't find a model or make...but I just found a booklet for my motherboard in a box and it mentions limitations with the USB ports...so... I'll type out what it says and hopefully this is my problem.

"USB 2.0 Driver Limitations: 2-1. The USB 2.0 driver only supports Windows XP and 2000. 2-2. If you connect a USB 2.0 hub to the root hub, plugging USB devices into this hub, the system might not successfully execute certain USB devices' connection because it could recogd not recognize these devices. Currently we are working on a solution...ETC."

Would that there have been a problem from the start or could it just randomly start happening?

Solve : Wierd Freeze Issue?

Answer»

I'm having a strange freeze on my machine (desktop, not laptop). It's like the system crashes, but only half-way.

This happens most often when I'm AWAY from the computer for an extended period of time. I'll come back and the power saving features have shut down the monitor and hard disks. When I move the mouse, everything comes back on. However, when I attempt to log in by clicking on my userid, the "hot" area doesn't respond to mouse click. I'm unable to use the keyboard either.

It's happened several other times as well. Occasionally, it'll happen while I'm using the machine. I was able to reproduce the issue every time while using Dreamweaver, however, I've since uninstalled and reinstalled the product and everything appears normal.

When it crashes while I'm using it, i can still move the cursor. When the cursor moves over the windows task bar, the cursor changes to allow me to widen it, however, it still doesn't respond to click. When I go over a text box, the cursor changes to a bar, but I still can't click nor does the keyboard accept input (alt-tab, windows key, nothing works).

I first noticed the problem a few days ago. Firefox had an update, and it's possible that there was a windows update, but I'm not 100% on that. I have Anti-virus installed and up to dat and no issues have been discovered. I have run Spybot Search & DESTROY with only the standard tracking cookie popping up. I'm using zone-alarm and have am behind a wireless router. GRC.org shows no port issues.

I have updated all of the device drivers for my machine from Gateway's website. I have disabled the hard-drive sleep feature and turned off hibernate mode. I have scanned the hard-disk for errors, and only get minor ones after a crash. Unfortunately, the only time I can guarantee that it'll happen is after it goes to sleep.

This is driving me absolutely freaking crazy. Anyone have any ideas?

Set the power options to always on so there are no power saving features.
Does it still happen then?
What antivirus do you have?
I don't see it listed. The power options are set to always on, i even completely shut off the screensaver. It still does it though. If i'm using it, no problem, if i leave for 20 minutes or so, crash.

I'm running Norton AV.

i've ALSO completely removed everything from my start-up list. at point, the computer is running basic windows with a/v, no additional programs.

i've tried using system restore, but it won't let me roll back to an acceptable date.I would do this first.

Look in Task manager and msconfig to see if you can spot any unwanted program(s) running in the background. Some malicious programs, such as spyware, Norton etc. may be running behind your back.

Reboot the computer in Safe Mode.

Uninstall all Norton and Norton related programs. I never have a good feeling of Norton and McAFee, these two so called anti-virus program CAUSES lot of problems on my friends' computers, such as system slow down, internet blockage... I never understand why anyone would use it in the first place. I would nerver recommand it to anyone. A good anti-virus program is AVG. It's good and it's FREE.

Install and run AVG, run ad-aware and spybot again.

Install and run RegCleaner (also free for download.) BE CAREFUL USING THIS PROGRAM, MAKE SURE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTION BEFORE USING IT!!!!
This should clean up most if not all junks  in the system. Then rebbot it normal mode.

If this seems to be too much work or symtoms persists, . you might just do a system restore on a fresh reinstallation.

B.still no luck. I killed norton and ran AVG, no viruses. Spybot & adaware are clean (but i'm pretty good about avoiding spyware). I haven't run regcleaner yet, I'm starting to think it's useless.

I ran memcheck, everything's ok there.

My final options are:

1. possible usb/logitech keyboard mouse issue?
2. reinstall windows (which i despise doing)

if neither of those work then I guess I need to send it back to Gateway. That sounds like a new system that should be under warranty. Have you contacted Gateway tech support or checked the FAQ's on their site?Hmmmm, if you boot up in Safe Mode, does it run correctly? If not, it could be a hardware issue, what hardware card(s) do you have, Try to strip it down to the minimum with no cards, use a different USB kbd and mouse, boot it up in Safe Mode.

B.In Windows XP, how do you change thw programs that automatically start up when you boot up your system? Quote

Use this- http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Tequila- have you shut all that power saving crap off yet?, if not set it all to "never" and just leave the screensaver active.

Solve : Computer Novice needs helping hand?

Answer»

Hello EVERYBODY!!!

I'm new to this web site so please bear with me on this problem. My CD-Rom is included in my Gateway modem ( C&C 300 S) and it's a desktop unit. I purchased it in May 2003 and it has Windows XP on it. In the past I have used CD's to utilize game features and maybe download new programs for the computer but the CD part has been used very little. Most of my computer useage is on the net and ebay, e-mail, etc. In the past four years I have used only less than 1/3 of available space of memory so I guess that's sufficient knowhow for you experts out there to answer my question.
I purchased a CD on E-bay ( car repair manual ) and when I got it I had trouble from the start. After talking to a former mechanic, I learned that the disc might have a problem being read so I contacted the seller who in turn sent me another disc (identical to the first ONE!) and it too wouldn't run right. Then after a phone call to the seller and numerous e-mails, I decided to try the CD on a neighbor's Dell (XP,too) but it's a laptop, and behold.... it worked nicely. This where I stand. I've got a total of 3 CD's that do not play on my Gateway. If there's a problem with the CD driver please TELL me why this occurred? My bro-in-law taught computers and he too was puzzled when he tried to get the data on the screen. All I get is an error message that states that the disc is not compatable with Windows or MS-DOS. How  can that be when the disc plays on another unit? I know there's a glich in the driver but what is it? Was my computer hacked into? Or my novice usage of the thing? Space aliens? I'm the only user of this computer. Any help to solve this will be really appreciated.Have you tried to update the drivers? You might try cleaning the LASER lens with one of these: Memorex Laser Lens Cleaner for CD/DVD Players All CD Drivers are built into Windows. There is no need to "update" anything. You may want to try deleting the CDROM in Device Manager (in Control Panel/System) and then rebooting. Does this make a difference?

The CD unit may just be shot. The optics usually fail long before the mechanics. THe amound of hard drive usage doesn't figure into that. It depends on the manufacturing process, usage and luck. The cleaner may help some, but no guarantees.

HOWEVER

On a computer that does play this disc, what are the file extensions? Look in WIndows Explorer if not sure. If it is a .pdf file then it is an Adobe Acrobat file and you will need Acrobat or Foxit reader to read it. I suspect this is the problem if it is a manual.

Here is a free download of Foxit:

Solve : Password Protect a Folder??

Answer»

Hey guys I was just curious to know if there was a way to make a folder on your harddrive password protected.  For example I have a folder on my desktop with a bunch of sub folders I wanted to password protect the main folder.  I am not even sure if there is a way of doing this or not.  I really dont want to make windows login accounts I dont like those.  Any help would be great or if there is 3rd party SOFTWARE that can do this task?  Thanks

-ChrisIt would be HELPFUL to know which flavor of Windows you are running...Pretty much the same question, it might help.Sorry was on the way out the door when I posted this message.  I am on XP home.  I RIGHT clicked the folder and was looking around the properties of it but didnt see much of anything that answered my question.  It is kind of strange that microsoft hasnt implmented this feature into windows YET. It is just another way that users would lock themselves out of their own data. We get an awful lot of "I forgot my password" posts here.
This software seems to have very good reviews.  I might try it out myself if I ever have the need.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/folderlock.htmlWe've had several people here who got separated permanently from their data with Folderlock. I don't remember if that was from the software or a pebcak however.Probably pebcak, it's easy to forget passwords.
If I felt the need to encrypt things and password-protect folder, which I don't, I'd use 7-Zip.
And it'd take up less space.
Which isn't important even slightly.

Quote

Chortles.Nice pics lol.  Yeah well folder lock is a big piece of crap.  I downloaded it shortly after I posted this thread and I lost a couple important files with it.  The program is definate garbage. How did you lose them?
Not another pesky pebcak I hope?I pretty much had folder lock select some html files I made to be in the password protected area so to say and when I went to view them they were missing.  It wasnt a huge deal I still had them stored on my ftp but I scraped that program after I saw that.

I have been playing with my winzip for a little bit however and I see how it lets you encrypt the idividual files within the actual zip folder.  I really just wanted to have a password prompt come up when you try to get into the main zip folder not for each individual file.  Do you know if this is possible?I'm reasonably sure there is a way, but I'm not sure because I use 7-Zip.
Have you checked the help files?
It might tell you there.why not go for total encryption and use TruCrypt? you can even make a keyfile and not have to have a password, although a keyfile is totaly irreplaceable. you could still put it on a flash drive or something.

Solve : Windows XP Pro and 250GB Western Digital HDD?

Answer»

Dear Users
Win Xp is not recognizing 250GB HDD how to make it RECOGNIZE 250GB HDD and what would be the
file system for the partition FAT32 or NTFS
(Recognizing means not showing its full size)
thanks
What do you mean by not recognizing it?
The best file system is debatable.
I'd recommend NTFS for (supposed) speed benefits over FAT32 and NEWER features, plus you can use files more than 4Gb in size with it, which you can't with FAT32.
Also, I heard Windows XP won't format VOLUMES over a certain size with FAT32, hopefully someone can clarify whether this is right or not.
However, NTFS is subject to the "RAW phenomenon".  I don't understand this, but I've seen it mentioned, hopefully someone can explain that too.Is this the only drive in the machine? Is this a new install onto that drive? What are the specifics of the machine? What Service Pack is this XP?Dear GX_MAN
it is a follows
motherboard ASUS P5N-32 SLi Premium wi-fi
processor Pentium D
ram kingstion 2GB 533X
and i was palnning to install 2 drives but even single it is not compeleting showing for parition only 137GB
and service pack is SP1
ThanksThat's your problem.
You need SP2.
Any reason why you haven't got it yet?
XP Pro, right?
Hmm . . .
Thanks
will it the be complete shown and ready for partitionWhat is that supposed to say?

Solve : occasionally slow computer?

Answer»

Greetings.

I have a second-hand Compaq Presario 7360. It CAME from a trusted source who used it for conferencing and primarily (it appeared) for games. I stripped off the toys and have turned it into something useful for a writer/editor and for desktop publishing.

It runs Microsoft Windows 98 SE with an AMD-K6 3D processor. It has 120MB RAM. With Firefox and Microsoft Word open, 60% of the system resources are free. Those are the programs I use the most. I’m using about 4 GB of the 39 available on the HD and not quite half the space on my system drive (both are FAT32).

Graphics acceleration is set at the notch above None (setting it at None created other problems, I vaguely recall). Windows is handling the virtual memory.

I run CCleaner, Spybot, and Ad-Aware daily. I have ClamWin anti-virus. I use ScanDefrag 5.4 to clean, scan, and defrag my drives. I haven’t found what VIDEO CARD I’m using, but I searched and don’t have either the ATI 3D Rage II or the 3D Rage II Plus.

I recently downloaded HDD Health to check the system, and except for frequent notices that my raw read error rate is a little up or down, it seems okay. The temperature runs between 36 and 41 C.

I’m not much of a tech guy, but I’ll try to provide any other info you need.

The problem (at last): Once or twice a week, my computer will act as though molasses is running through the circuitry. Some days I can go back and forth between Firefox and MS Word and all is well. Other days, trying to use either provides a new definition of “slow.” What’s with this thing, or what am I overlooking?

Many thanks,
BryonMost likely an updater service running in the background like microsoft update for example or antivirus is auto updating (mine seems to auto update only when im playing 3D intensive games, pain in the *censored*)

To reduce the amount of unecessary background services try this- Optimizer XP
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1087
Quote-
"Optimizer XP will help you to optimize your PC system to its best performance without any options. No experience required. Just select mode to optimize or restore your system.

Optimizer XP is a freeware optimizer program but more powerful than some shareware optimizer programs. Optimizer XP is a new generation of PC Tweak and improves many functions. "

EDIT- I finally noticed that your running win 98 not XP *slaps forehead* sorry, I should pay better attention.Frequently those machines have BackWeb running in the background, especially if it is the original OS install. Many other programs come preloaded on that vintage of Compaq and most are unnecessary. Also, a lot of debris is included with a used machine with the original OS just from using Windows. A good format and reinstall of Windows would speed things up a LOT.Also another 128mb RAM stick should help.128 RAM is the sweet spot for Windows 98. More will probably not even make a noticeable difference with normal usage.  Oh I know that but in his case it MIGHT just do the trick. Why have you set graphics acceleratin so slow? You should only do this if you have problems with maximum setting. It's not just to do with games, but other things to.Memory is like party, the more the merrier. Max it out even if you have to sell your kids!

B.Not necessarily, but an interesting THOUGHT. Windows 98 is different than XP by the way.If he spends any money on hardware upgrades to improve performance, I believe he's much more likely get more value for his money by installing a PCI video card than more RAM.  His computer only dedicates 8MB of RAM to video memory,  An inexpensive video card with 64MB of memory would be a smarter purchase than more RAM.

Solve : Computer is Stuttering?

Answer»

Hi, YESTERDAY my computer started like stuttering, meaning my mouse would move choppy whenever a program would load. for example, If i opened my browser it would get all choppy until it loads, and if im listening to music while i do something then the music will get all choppy. its the same with games,i cannot play games now because of the annoying stutters. It started yesterday when i woke up,my computer was being all weird. everything was fine the night before,i hadn't downloaded or installed anything,it was just a normal day. i went to sleep and when i woke up my sound didn't work, i tried to play a song and got a sound card error. I uninstalled my sound drivers and reinstalled then and that worked, but i have no idea why that happened in the first place. then later that day it started stuttering.

This has happened to me before though, about 3 or 4 months ago,i got the EXACT type of stuttering for no reason. I tried everything to fix it and the only thing that worked was Formatting my hardrive. I really don't want to Format again, its really annoying and TAKES too long.Since Formatting fixed it the first time it cannot be a hardware issue. so does anyone have any clue why this has happened to me and what can be done to fix it? thanks.

What other settings have you monkeyed with? It is easier to diagnose the problem if you are not changing the basic functionality of Windows.

The dentist will see you now.Anyone have the anaesthetic?
Or should we do this without? How can people help you if you don't give enough info?

Base on gussing, lack of RAM is a posibility, too big of a page file could be a problem, run spybot, ad-aware and AVG or other virus scan whether you think your computer is clean or not etc, etc...

Solve : new larger screen - smaller words?

Answer»

Just got a new flat screen monitor much larger - now how can I get the games, etc. to become larger? I went to the area that enlarges the fonts, but that doesn't seem to help games, mail etc.   I am not young - and it is difficult to read such small print!Have you tried going to the desktop properties and then clicking the "settings" tab?
from here you can adjust the amount of pixels.

good luck If this is an LCD monitor they usually prefer to run at their own native resolution. Unfortunately that means smaller icons, etc. as you are describing. That's the price of "progress". You can try making THINGS larger, but they will be less sharp appearing.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/personalize/resolution.mspxYou don't necessarily have to change the resolution, you could right click the desktop and GO to properties, click the APPEARANCE tab, click the "advanced" button, and where it says "item:" just selet the TYPE of item you want to make bigger (like the icons, click icon). You can also right click the desktop and go to properties, click the settings tab, click the "advanced" button, and where it says "DPI setting:", you can change it from normal size, to large size. Hope that helps . (phew)

Solve : File Properties tabs?

Answer»

How can I copy a file with the summary tab data located in file PROPERTIES?  Copy will tell you that the summary data will be lost on the copy file.  Also how can I add the summary tab to files properties that do not have the summary tab?  Can it also be added to folder properties (folder properties do not have summary tabs)?Specifically, what application are you talking about?  I would guess you MAY be talking about Microsoft Word.  If so, I find that copying a Word file from one folder to another does not result in loss of any data in file Properties, nor does it display any warning that the summary data will be lost.  So, we need more details from you to try to make sense of your question.Almost any file you find in a directory.  I downnload many files from the net, I usually copy part of the web page description of the file copied to the file properties, summary tab, comments that I saved on my drive.  After awhile, I got so many files and I don't know what they do.  By putting this description in the summary tab, I have a hint of what it does.  But if you then copy these file to another drive, you lose the summary tab data.  Sometimes the file properties do not contain the summary tab nor does appear in all folder properties.  My second question is, can I add the summary tab to file or folder properties? RECENTLY I came across a progam called folder size from PC World downloads.  It not only PUT folder size data in explorer but it also showed me how to change the explorer information screen in adding or deleting what is displayed.  My screen now shows the folder size and Comments (obtained from the file properties).I just make small text files with info dates etc and save them within the archive.

If you cannot open the archive then just save it as a folder with the text file included...

patio.   8-)But this method does not display the Summary tab, Comment in Explorer.  This problem has never been properly addressed by MS.  During the DOS period, there was a program called DDIR which created a DIR list file with comments.  Then a magazine download, PC Notes 1 and 2, did a similar thing for windows.  But none really interacted with Explorer.  Explorer will display over a dozen items about a file, if programed, from the data in the tabs in file properties.  By chance, I copied a few programs, grouped copy, to another disk and one of files still contained the Summary data.  This MADE me think that there must be a way to do this to all files.
Thanks for your comment.

Solve : Microsoft Outlook Express - Please Help!!?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I'm using windows XP and Microsoft OUTLOOK Express. I find it very useful for e-mail etc. However I am now using two seperate e-mail accounts with Outlook Express and all MESSAGES download into my 'Local Folders'

Can anyone please tell me how to download my e-mail into seperate folders, so I can monitor each of them on their own, rather than fish through my Local folders... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Lewis!!Bump  WELL, you can use Message Rules to direct all INCOMING mail to certain folders.  Or, you may want to set up another IDENTITY and use different Identities for the two email accounts.  In each Identity, you would only see the mail retrieved into that Identity. Thanks for that matey! But... how would I create a second identity? Thanks again!Go to File, Identities, Add New Identity ....

Solve : XP HDD rip ???

Answer»

Hello people,

I bought a computer and it came with XP in it but the vendor didnt give me a CD of XP. Is there anyway to make a BACKUP copy of XP on a CD DVD or anything ?

Thank you in advance. Some small computer shops will burn you a bootable copy for a small fee (5 bucks) provided you have a legitimate activation key.
Go back to the shop you bought the computer from and ask for a backup bootable windows installation cd.
If they tell you that you need to buy a brand new copy of windows for the 100 ODD bucks its going for these days, remind them that you paid for the operating system already as it was part of the purchase PRICE of the computer.

And if any problems with that call Microsoft directly. They are very INTERESTED in COMPANIES that install XP without all the necessary requirements.

Solve : Outlook has dropped the "to" and "from"?

Answer»

I am not sure what version of Outlook I have, but I am assuming it is 2000.

When you open it up and click on Inbox it SHOWS you, on the right, all of he emails you have in your inbox.

Something happened to mine (I clicked on something and have no idea what) where it now no longer shows you who each email is from.  You SEE in the picture I circled where the information used to show up.

I have looked all through the outlook program and cannot figure out how to make this go back to the way it was.  Does anyone have any idea how to help me fix this?

Thanks

Well I have a newer version of Outlook but we'll HOPE this works too...

1.) Right-click anyway on that gray bar where the items went missing.
2.) Looking for something LIKE or EXACT (remembering you have an older version, it may say something different): "Customize Current View"  Left-click on it.
3.) Now you should have an option like fields.  Click it, and there you go! Move whatever you need to over and anything else you need to do there.

If these steps don't help, the first step is to do step one and see what is in that list.  Whatever you can find that says "Customize" or "Fields" or maybe it even has all of the options (I think iTunes does that where if you right click on that bar all the options of what you WANT to PLACE there pop up.)

Anyway, let me know if you need anything else!

Solve : Xp problem with new build?

Answer» HI all so I am building my first tower and everything has gone well so far. To save some money I was GOING to reuse a newer Hard drive I bought for an old computer. It had a working copy of XP on it. So I plugged it in and when I booted up my new system I got the bios page than it listed the devices and CPU and all that good stuff. Than a Windows screen appears and gives me the standard options of safe MODE, safe mode with networking, last known configuration, etc. So I have tried last known, safe mode and plain standard and all it does is reboot and start the entire process over and over again! What should I do ? Many thanks John   :-/ johnachen2...... Windows is confused , it's looking for the old configuration which of course does exist any more . Simply dig out your real MS XP cd and reformat the drive and then it will install with no problem at all.

dl65  do you think a real XP upgrade disc might work (i tried and got an error but i was trying to repair not reformat)?? I actualy LOST my full version I only have the upgrade disc.  :-/It would work but you'd need an older copy of windows as well.

Solve : UnattendednInstallation?

Answer»

How can I install a DRIVER or some other software in unattended/silent mode. I mean to avoid popups coming in Between. Also whether I can predetermine or PROGRAM which button to click in the event of multiple buttons in a popup window which comes in between the installation.I would want to be aware of EVERY OPTION or possible problem during the installing of drivers, etc. Why do you want to do it this way?I was actually involved in the installation of a server system. I was required to install several softwares with many options to set up the server. It was a HECTIC process as it involved many softwares to install with different options to select. Then I thought of preparing a batch file or some other software to automate this process. So that me or anyone ELSE in the future can prepare this server in case of breakdown with one button click. I completed the almost part. But facing the problem with popups coming in between the installation. So can you please help me.Your best bet would be to set up everything perfectly and then save the installation with an imaging program like Acronis True Image. Complete restorations are very simple, but it will take a few clicks to get there.I'm not sure this method would work if it involved different machines as the drivers would have to be close to the hardware they are seeing...

Unattended installs can be more work than the alternative.

Solve : Desktop missing after reboot?

Answer»

I am running Windows NT 4.0 and after some rather odd freezing I decided to reboot.  Now, my destop does not show up.  I know that this has something to do with the registry, however, I am not quite sure what it would be, where it would be, or how I would be able to get to it.  If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.Doesn't sound very good for the OS's general stability. May be time to format and reload. Could be a virus or some type of spyware.

I cannot recall if NT4 has a safe mode or not. The boot screen or the F8 combo may work to see if it does. Sometimes getting into safe mode and out of it gracefully can help)

I once read that holding the LEFT shift key down during login will bypass your startup folder (only the STARTMENU's startup items not the registry).

There may be an application causing the computer to act odd. Ctrl + Shift + Esc is the shortcut for the TASK manager on Win2k/XP. You can see if this is present in NT and see if a program is causing the computer to lock up.

I hope this isn't our Administroators profile. If it is just a user, you should be able to login as admin and delete the buggy user and readd it.Well, I was able to get taskmanager on screen and started a run box.  I did some digging on google and typed "winnt /ox".  Then BLAM!!!!  My desktop appeared.  Why it worked, not EVEN the net admin could tell me.  So, once I did that, I imported a back-up copy of the registry.  I rebooted and it seemed to work FINE.  I was getting these notifications from my resident spyware scanner that told me the "bootexecute" registry entry was trying to be deleted.  Of course, I denied the change and started a spyware scan and virus scan.  So far, nothing has turned up.  Other than that, everything is up and running smoothly (at least until the next reboot  Thanks for all the info and suggestions!  I really do appreciate it!

**And for a side note, safe mode is not available for NT 4.0 unless you are using a dual-boot environment.  The option will appear then and only then, but it will still take you to its normal runtime environment.  It was a good suggestion tho!

Solve : Office Shortcuts?

Answer»

Hey Hopers,

Just wondering if anyone knew a way of creating a shortcut to an MS office document that will open regardless of the version of office installed. In this case this would be either office 10 (the 2002 version) or office 11 (the 2003 version).

The "Start in" BOX currently reads "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11" (or office 10 on PC's with that version) and the "target" box also contains REFERENCES to the version of office.

I need to do this so that I can create effective LOGIN script which copies one shortcut to every users DESKTOP regardless of which office version they have.

Cheers

Solve : Lots of files in C: drive.?

Answer»

(I apologize in advance if this doesn't make a lot of sense. It's a hard problem to explain, and I'm not good with describing things that are wrong with my computer!)

I recently got an HP laptop in November. It has an AMD Turion 64 with 80 GB of hard drive, and, of course, Windows XP. Every thing was fine until there was a new update for Windows. I don't remember exactly the name of the update, but I kept having to INSTALL the update over and over again. After researching, I found that it was NORMAL and that some people had to install this update 80 times. As ANNOYING as that was, it wasn't a real problem.

However, a short time after I started these installations, I noticed odd files in my C: drive, having such names as 1d07d9201b8e13550fbb51dcc4a8 and de399ce41a434c92da688d6929c8be. When I open up the files, there's only a text document inside. As I continued to update, the files continued to grow. Now that I'm finally finished with the update, I swear I have a hundred files on my C: drive with these weird names. I'm thinking that these files have to do with the upate.

When there were only a few files, I thought I could just hide the files, since I FIGURED they were useless. But after doing so, every single program on my computer disappeared. Finally, I had to go back and "show" these files again to get all of my programs back.

Is there anything I can do about these files? It's really annoying to have to scroll down just to get to my program files, and I'd just rather have them off of my computer. Thanks in advance! Not that I know of. You are correct they are windows updates. I too have 1 odd named folder by "5e3f805bcd23dec4baebc457b6381e" but no more.Hotfix info for rolling back to previous versions if need be.

Goto tools/folder options/view/ CHECK "do not show hidden files or folders"
I have two folders named like that one has a txt file and the other with a hole buch of file, but the two combined only take up 50mb of space.I have one which takes up 0.25MB. They are folders, not files. Important difference.

Solve : Mouse disconnects when loading Windows?

Answer»

I am trying to fix problems by reloading windows XP Pro but every time I TRY it gets to the point of installing windows (4th step) and a pop up comes up telling me that the software of for Realtek AC97 AUDIO has not passed Windows Logo testing and asks me to click yes or no, and at this time my Microsoft mouse disconnects so I can't click anything. And there it  sits.

Setup will complete in 34 minutes. Restarting the computer takes it back to the beginning of the 4th step but every time I restart the mouse quits.

What options do I have? Will it ever make a decision on its own and continue without me clicking?

I made this computer so there is no help there.

Sandy

Update: I disconnected everything exept the mouse and got past the RealTek, now it wants the D-Link CD and I can't find that (used it two days ago)  and now even though the mouse is lit up, I can't click yes or no on that!

Update: found the CD (not in its case) and now I'm down to 19 minutes.  LOOKS like it may go this time!If it fails or stalls this time power down and gently clean that XP CD with a lint-free cloth.

You could also remove the DLink device and install it after you have XP running...

patio.  8-)I made a new partition and am trying to put windows on it. So I can move  everything to it and do a clean install on C.  So, there is no CD to clean off,  the install program is on the new partition.

Today at the 37 minute mark it says file needed - the file VIAAGP1.SYS filter drive disk is needed and even through the mouse is lit up it won't move to click ok, cancel or BROWSE.  I KEEP rebooting and it keeps doing the same thing.
In your first post towards the end you said you found the CD and it was going welll...now in this post you state you are installing from another partition and there is no CD.

You will have to provide much more and accurate info on how you are actually going about this re-install and what exactly you want to accomplish before i can continue...

Solve : VIAAGP1.SYS hangs windows upgrade installation?

Even through the MOUSE is lit up it won't move to click ok, cancel or browse.  I keep rebooting and it keeps doing the same thing.  I'm going to leave for another hour and then I guess I'll have to throw in those 5 boot DISKS and go with that even though I'll loose everything.   It will take me hours to get my mail set back up and WEEKS to get Mailwasher back to where it was.

I had this problem yesterday and got past it somehow so today I made a new partition and was trying to get get Windows on that when this occurred.

I have disconnected everything (even the network/router/modem)  except the mouse

Solve : Windows boot brings up two Windows options?

Answer»

When I boot up it asks me which Windows XP Professional I want to load.

Is there a way to get it down to one?

SandyYes.
Make sure of the one you want, and make sure it works and so on.
Then just edit boot.ini and remove the one you don't want.
Why do you have 2 XP Pro installations ANYWAY?I have no idea how I got TWO. The second one just started appearing when I boot up.  This is the same computer that fails to load the mouse when it boots up.  I have to start it 6 or 7 times before it "CATCHES".  I tried replacing it with a Microsoft mouse, but that didn't help. Now that you know what to do I would format your computer and that'll clean up your second install.  I know boot.ini and editting it will take care of it too, but a year down the road problems may start to occur.I'd try and solve your other ISSUES before this, focus on one thing at a time.

Solve : I've lost my administrator account.?

Answer»

Hi there,

I was trying to create another user ACCOUNT for a GUEST.  I had previously created another administrator account and when I was in that account my COMPUTER shut down on me.  When it restarted it was in that new account with a brand new screen and all the factory settings back.  I could not find my original documents and all my programmes that were in my administator account.  Eventually I found all I needed under the C drive in documents and settings but I cant get the actuall administrator account back.  When I go into user accounts it only lists the new account I had previously created and the very recent guest account, however, the original is not there.  I know it exists cause when I go to create another and call it 'administrator' windows tells me it already exists and that I have to create a new name.  How can I find my original 'administrator' account and get back into it again?

Thank you - DavidCreate New Username:
I'm surprised that you were allowed to create that account in the first place.  If I were you I WOULD never create an "administrator" account because if one day you  have to go into safe mode, that is the account you would want to go into.  What I would do is create a new account with a different name and then if you go under:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\
or
C:\Documents and Settings\administrator\

You should be able to find all your stuff and then copy it over to your new name.

B.) Logging out & Back in
Another thing you could do that I don't know if you've tried is go into your start menu and then log off.  Then go ahead and log off or switch user and either a screen will pop up with a list of username or a dialog box will appear for your username and PASSWORD.

IF the screen showing the usernames pops up and your name is not there then:
1.) Log back into an account; go into the User Accounts
2.) Click on: "Change how users log on and off"
3.) Uncheck the "Welcome Screen" at the top then click Apply options

Then log back out and that dialogue box I mentioned earlier should appear.  Go ahead and type in administrator for the username and if you had a password type that in too, otherwise leave it blank.

See if either of those things work...
--MikeMore information is needed, are you using the classic login prompt. I'm going to assume that it is WinXP. If you are not using the classic login prompt all you have to do is when the login screen comes up just hit "ctrl+alt+del" (once or twice I forget) Try it once and if that does not work hit it again. Then hopefully you remember the administrator password. cheers  .Hey thanks guys,

Both of what you said was helpful.  Control alt delete showed me the classic logon which I could type in Administrator, and changing it back to classic logon in user accounts also did the same thing.  It is strange though that in the new login (not classic logon) the trad administrator account is not there.

But u have both saved my *censored* - thank you.

Solve : network connection suddenly drop?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. I wonder what caused a network connection to drop.

What happen is that i have a network with 6 PCs and a server. I created a mapped drive network for all 6 PCs. TODAY, for unknown reason, i could not access to the shared folder on the server when it's been long connected since this morning. It happen in the late afternoon by the way.

The message i got is as follows
"An ERROR occurred while reconnecting z: to \\192.168.4.2. Microsoft windows Network: The local DEVICE name is already in use. This connection has not been restored."

I usually get away with it by re-starting the PC. but i just can't do that all the TIME it goes down.

Very annoying because i was in the MIDDLE of working on the file that's located in the shared folder on the server.  Now, i could not save it on the server but on the local machine.

Does anyone know why and how to fix this?

Thank you in advance

Solve : Buffer Overrun Detected?

Answer» Hey,
I need help! My computer is being retarded, for the second time this week.. Any ideas?
This is what my computer is saying, in a little box, on the desktop; I will even show you the screenshot I took of it!
--------------------------------
Buffer overrun detected!
Program: C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
A buffer overrun has been detected which has CORRUPTED the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated.
--------------------------------
Everytime I click OK is resets my Desktop screen, and then comes up again like 5 seconds later. Why is it doing this to me? I am about ready to throw it out the window. Anyways, here is the screenshot, any ideas?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y237/WickdChk/ComputerError.jpgSounds like malware posing as explorer.exe (note lower CASE exe).  Spybot S&D is REPUTED to be the removal tool for this.

Suggest RUNNING maintenance SpyBot S&D, AdAware, your AV Scan ETC..

Good luckI will try that and see. Thanks

Solve : changing boot drive in dos ??

Answer»

I have read thru "somewhat" the search engine here 1st.
Have an OLD compaq presario with wind 98se  and I cannot get the puter to boot from the cd drive it reads only from the a drive.
I finally GOT an  A prompt   and want to INSTALL my  full windows  me  cd.
It was not ACCEPTING the microcrap cd  product key from the cd i received with this puter ?
Anyone know what I should do ?
You should not need a floppy boot at all. The machine should be bootable from the CD drive. You can boot with a Win98SE floppy, format the drive and then do the install from the ME CD assuming you have the correct serial number. You must change the bootdrive in the BIOS, not DOS.

Yesterday after lunch I went to get back on my COMPUTER but it was froze, the mouse would move but I could not click on anything. Until today the PC was working fine until after lunch again. This time however I cannot get do anything in safe mode. Any suggestions, I find the help on this site very good.

Prior to  the problem the computer was working fine, I had a 30 min lunchand when I went back to open some programs the computer would not respond, just the mouse pointer would move.Maybe you should stop eating lunch!  Only kiddin' It seems that the problem could have something to do with when your computer when it goes into standby mode.  When this happened did you turn off the computer and try again?YES, I even went into safe mode and restored the computer to a prior date. I also have been noticed my hard drive is become noisey, you can hear it runniing and working. It freezes up in safe mode as well now.  NANCY I could always each lunch at my desk, and keep working on the computer. So I just formatted it...
But seeing as ur ctrl alt delete doesnt work, I have no clue.
If you got nothing important on it, easist thing to do, is format it. Quote

Guru,
Can I hook up a  new HD in the computer and transfer the data, I am using my MAC notebook because I cannot get the PC up and running it works for about 1 min then freezes.

Another HDD in the broke machine will not fix things if this is a hardware issue...it will exhibit the same symptoms as before...hook up the drive with the data you want to save into another Windows machine...not a MAC preferably with a burner and retrieve your data...

Then run the HDD diagnostics on that drive to see if it is the culprit.

Save your data first ! If it is in fact the HDD going SOUTH every time you use it you risk it failing altogether...

Solve : no icons in the network folder?

Answer»

I have a NEW first computer. There are no icons in my network folder. The onboard lan is enabled in the bios, and I have loaded the drivers from the mother board CD. I am running windows xp home edition. Doeas this mean my motherboard is faulty?? I have tried contacting the firm i bought it from but they are not replying; and they are a long way away from me. Any help would be very APPRECIATED. Daveplease be more specific and include more info on computerMy computer has a pentium duo processor on an asus motherboard. It came ready for me to use
with windows XP home already installed. Everything looked fine when I first started it up. I then went to install my Broadband modem which was to be connected to the computer, via the RJ45 or LAN as you call it. When I found I could not connect, I called the provider help line. When he took me through some check and noticed that I did not have any icons when I opened up network connections; he thought it was not installed or enebled in the bios. We carried out these checks. The bios was enabled for onboard LAN, and I installed the drivers from the Motherboard Disk. The computer was re-started and I went back to the Control Panel/Network Connections; again when this was opened the windows was blank with no Icons. He stated that the Motherboard was faulty and could not help me further.
Check device manager for the network adapter.  Is there is yellow dot with an exclaimtion point there?

Alan <><  There is nothing in the device manager nor in the network connections in the control panel;also the Network Setup Wizzard says there are no devices on the computer. taffy.... Lets start at the beginning. You purchased a new pc ....... from somebody .  I think a company or store name would be in order.
You say it has windows XP home c/w SP2 ?
Did you receive a winXP home edition cd with this machine ?
You say the machine will start up ok and loads windows XP........
Is there any other SOFTWARE with it ?
You say it has a on board Ethernet adapter , but that adapter doesnt show up in the device manager .
Do you have a PHONE number for the company you purchased it from ?
Do you have the address of this company ?

What do you mean they are not replying ? Does no one answer the phone when you call them ?

How did you pay them ?

dl65
It is a new machine purchased from Golen Computers on-line. Their only contact is via e-mail. It was recommended by PC Adisor a computer magazine here in the UK. The machine came loaded with WindowsXP Home, and they supplied a proper windows disk with serial number. Everything else on the computer runs ok; i.e. sound, graphics and microsoft works. The problem is the LAN/ethernet side. Nothing is recognised; that is why I am thinking it is a fault on the motherboard. I have e-mailed them twice about the problem, but to date have not had a reply.

Solve : ntldr is missing... (WinXP)?

Answer»

simple fix right? wrong...

took me forever to get past my administration password (which for the recovery console seems to be nothing at all for some reason). now that I finally have access, I can't copy files from my original install disk or any extra bootdisks/data disks. I only get an error message telling me "access is DENIED". And REINSTALLING my OS is NOT an option (as I have some files not yet backed up that i need to retrieve) unless i put in a new hd, but i don't know if i could (the current dual 500 GB hd configuration uses cables I've never seen before).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated...

Or if someone could help me move the the files off my hd and onto an external that would be fine as well, either way.

Btw this is XP Pro w/ Media Center (can't believe I forgot to put that...)anybody? From our archives

And Here...

Already tried both of those... If I put in a new hard drive and made a fresh install of windows to that drive, then used THIS method, would I be able to retrieve my files? It's worth a shot. That or swap it as slave into a known working machine...

But hey i never need an excuse to buy a new HDD...go with your method. Quote

Guess I'll put it to the test then, lol. To Fry's! :-? *censored*?

Okay, so I get back and for some reason can't install the extra harddrive WITHOUT using windows (figures), but now I magically have access to the files on the boot/install disc (no "Access is Denied" messages now). But after copying over both ntldr and ntdetect.com, the system still gives me the "NTLDR is missing" message. Trying to copy the files over again, it's now asking me if I want to overwrite the copy already on the system (didn't do that the other time), so I know the file is there...could it be because the one from the disc is prior to SP2 (possibly SP1, but I doubt it)?Okay, mysteriously the Windows repair function started working, so now the problem is (probably) resolved. Once I move off my unbacked files I'm gonna start fresh with a new install of the OS, lol. A good FORMAT and install solves all Windows problems for a while.

Be sure and keep your friend off of your computer.   Quote

Probably a better idea to keep me off it, lol. I've decided to not use it for any internet activities (aside from regular MS and other UPDATES) and keep online stuff on my laptop...reinstalling the OS on my laptop only takes about 18 minutes anyway.

Solve : Com. Admin. not working properly??

Answer»

I am attempting to install the updated WMP, but it will not allow me to finish the installation SAYING to log in as the Computer Administrator. The user NAME I typically use has Computer Administrator under it when I LOOKED at the User Accounts in the Control Panel. I also tried making a new account with Adm. RIGHTS but it still did not work. I also entered safe mode to attempt it, but WMP would not open in safe mode. I have tried searching for an answer but not found my situation so hopefully no one has asked this question before. Thanks for anyone that answers.  How are you trying to update it?  Are you using the internet or a cd? Is it WMP 10 and if so which one do you have? Quote

How are you trying to update it?  Are you using the internet or a cd? Is it WMP 10 and if so which one do you have?

I downloaded it off the internet and it was installed properly, I think. I updated to Version 10 and I am not sure which version I had before. I am assuming I need to be the computer administrator to "finalize" the installation??? But right now WMP won't open/play at all. Should I just delete and start over?

I called the guy at staples and he said it sounds like it didn't install all the way?Can you boot to safe mode and then do a SYSTEM restore to a point before you did this?

I agree with GX1_ManYes i did a restart tried to anyway 3x. Not in safe mode. Will this make a difference, because the other
way didn't matter.
Can't read anything have to write down the steps from one pc and then do it on the other. When u click start u can't read that. Under accessories you can't read that, once u click on something and open it
then u can read that. Soooooooooooo.
What if I put the install cd back in and do it again? :-?

Solve : Strange Windows XP Pro performance?

Answer»

I have a relatively new self MADE computer that was doing well until a few weeks ago.
When I open run and type in cmd  it tells me cmd is not a valid Win32 application.  When I enter command prompt and ask it to ping something, it tels me C:\Windows\system32\ping.com is not a valid Win32 application.

But worst of all, when I open a folder with the intent of transferring a file to another folder, or to a USB drive, both folders crash.

I have System Mechanic 6 Pro and have run it though its most stringent tests, and it tell me there is nothing wrong with my hard drive, and that I have no spyware.  I reloaded Windows and I set all my services.msc to "on".  It does the same thing in safe mode.

I would format this drive with System Mechanic  drive SCRUBBER, but I have things like Mailwasher and Outlook that I would like to  transfer to another computer, but even though they share a connection and see each other in the network neighborhood, it says is can't find the other computer when I try to use the  file and settings transfer  wizard.

I have a removable hard drive but the wizard won't find that, and it will find my 1 g USB SanDisk  but apparently that not big enough to hold Outlook, and anyway, the new Outlook on the other machine  won't import from a USB device.

I would like to move my movies, and both mail programs to another computer for saving.  Do I have to go out a buy a direct cable so I can do that?

Ironically, it downloads movies and gets email and opens web pages just fine.

Sandy in FLThis may be a long shot, but I'm guessing if you have a custom built comp you probably have an extra harddrive laying AROUND. If possible, you could probably stick a different harddrive in as the master (at least 10gb in size) and install windows xp on there as a temp main os. Make sure to set the new drive to master and previous to slave. After the xp install (should go by in under 20 mins) you should be able to use your removable harddrive to save all the settings from the original harddrive. I'm new here, but I HOPE this helps!

EDIT: as an afterthought, have you attempted to do a system restore yet?Start..Run ...type in sfc /scannow...have your XP CD handy.I have already tried sfc /scannow.  I just forgot to mention it.

I am not good at slaving hard drives, but I'll give it a try.

After reloading Windows, I have no more restore points.
