Solve : Factory Settings.?

Answer»

If i restore my computer to factory SETTINGS will i lose windows sp2 and everything else. I dont mind LOOSING any custom settings or files and folders but i do not know if i will loose windows itself.
If i do restore to factory settings will it solve problems like BSOD on DRIVER problem so ican just start all over again with a fresh slate. :-/
WINDOWS SP2.Yes ...with a restore you will have to reinstall SP2 and all security upates and hotfixes.
This will ALSO involve re-installing whatever programs you have currently so be sure to back up any important data...
Basically the machine will be like it was new out of the box.

patio.   8-)If you have no Windows or Restore CD then you will lose everything.cheers WONT be doing that then.

Solve : 0E: 0028: 00000005 error (Desperate Plea For Help)?

Answer»

total computer novice here so please be easy on me

when trying to run Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. on my older Dell Computer yesterday (fairly recently upgraded to XP from ME) I was getting some compatibility error messages.
I tried to uninstall the program (Adaptec) but think parts of it were still left behind which later were causing errors.... Windows was stopping certain drivers from loading at startup and the computer would automatically shut down at times.
I tried doing a system restore to no avail

I finally gave up (or so I thought I did) and decided to try uninstalling XP and go back to ME
I did so but now when I insert any cd into my cd-rom drive I get the blue screen error message listed in the topic header(0E: 0028: 00000005). I cannot get out of it without ctrl/alt/delete and because of it I have no access to my cd-rom drive

I searched high and low on the net for a solution and can't find anything

Any 'simple' explaination on how I can make this error go away and be able to access my cd-rom drive?http://www.freeregistryfix.com/

http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/?ref=mg_rmThat VERSION of Easy CD will never run on XP.

So you installed XP on top of ME as opposed to formatting the drive and doing a clean install? But you want to erase everything and do an install ME? I'm not clear on this part. Quote

That version of Easy CD will never run on XP.
yes I have found documentation about that on the web now that has made it more than clear that is the fact

Quote

yes I installed the XP upgrade without deleting the previous version of ME.
since I knew there was a conflict with the program and XP and my computer kept shutting down and restarting on its own because of some conflict I uninstalled XP and reverted back to the ME OS on my machine.
My computer no longer shuts down on its own but whenever I put a cd in my cd-rom drive I get the blue screen error message when I close the drive and I have to control/alt/delete to restart and use my computer again.
Just trying to figure out how I can possibly continue to use my cd-rom drive without the error moving things to a hault.
Adaptec Easy CD leaves a ton of stuff in the registry when it is uninstalled. I suggest you run a good registry cleaner. Or remove all the crap manually if your familiar with regedit.A good format and reinstall will solve all Windows problems for a while. I would suggest backing up your data files and doing just that. Installing one operating system on top of another just brings those problems along, as well as the other issues. Quote

I have installed and run Registry Mechanic and Free Registry Fix
both free versions only fix so MANY errors
and nothing has been done to correct the problem

again, forgive my greenness
but wouldn't I need access to my cd-rom drive if I were to reinstall my original OS off of a disc?
Also I have nothing to back up my existing files onto.

If there is no simple fix and I have to spend $$ I might just be inclined to start from scratch and buy a new PC

current PC: Dell Dimensions L933r

thanx to all those who are trying to offer assistance and are being patient with mePut your Windows XP CD in, restart the machine, and press any key when it asks to do so to boot from the CD. Don't try to do it from within Windows.

I see NO need to get a new PC at this point. Quote

not sure I follow
are you asking me to reinstall XP which I just took off the machine in FAVOR of the original ME?
either way I cannot do anything with the cd drive
if I put a cd in it I get the blue screen error and the computer locks up
if I leave it in and reboot it does not start running when the computer restarts
If I have a cd in the drive and go to 'my computer' the blue screen comes on again....  none of that happens with no cd in the drive.
The error at times comes from the systems inability to recognize the disks CD File System. May be caused by using burned CDR disks 'not always compatible with all CD drives, or you may have a bad EIDE cable or the laser needs cleaning.

Have you tried going to the control panel system, hardware, device manager,
right click on the drive in question, choose uninstall, then reboot?I was advising reinstalling XP fresh. What version is this? Is it a genuine disc that says Microsoft all over it? Is the computer set to boot from CD first in the BIOS? If this is all true, put the CD in and restart the machine.WHat happens exactly? Quote

last time I got the error I just left the cd in the tray and rebooted the machine
the cd did not automatically start up
and when I went to start/run/browse/my computer to access the D: drive the computer went to the blue screen error message again once I got to 'my computer'

here is a more detailed rundown of what happens when I insert a cd into the cd-rom drive

insert cd...close drive
blue screen error  error:  0E: 0028: 00000005
press any key to continue... press space bar
black screen with hourglass (CLOCKING)
back to blue screen with new error:  0E: 016F: BFF8E64B
press any key to continue.. press space bar (press once same screen, press twice takes me to the following screen)
Explorer caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.exe at 0001: 000075a8.
click on close ... same message...click on close again...computer locks up and have to power off and restart

Solve : Cannot install any programs!?

Answer»

I cannot install any programs on Windows XP.  I tried downloading Adobe Reader and when the PROGRAM finishes downloading and I press 'RUN' - it comes up saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to close.  If I send an error report to Microsoft and click on the More Info button it says that I need to download something from this site http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html - however when I tried to do that the same thing happens - it tells me that the program has encountered and error and will not run it. I tried to install several more programs and same thing happens.  Can anyone help?XP Home or Pro? Service pack? What virus/spyware protection? WHat happened prior to this? Other problems noted? Any recent softrware or hardware changes?

See below.XP Home
Service Pack 2
Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2006
Nothing happened prior?
There have been several occurrances in Word, Excel and Internet Explorer with MENUS not opening at times.
Some SOFTWARE changes, updated Internet Explorer to latest version, deleted some programs such as Adobe (version 5) and Filemaker Pro but nothing significant.
No hardware changes. And what did you use to check for spyware? If nothing, download, install and update Spybot, then run it in safe mode.

Also try the online SCANNER at www.trendmicro.com

If the machine is not clean, all bets are off.

If it is, how about a system restore to a point before this happened, if it was recently. This happend to me. I think it something to do with many un/installations on the computer??
Anyway reparing Windows should fix it. Remember to have the driver disks ready.

Solve : Repairing windows?

Answer»

I have recently upgraded my mother board, processor, graphics card and RAM. I didn’t expect windows to easily accept the hardware change, and it didn’t. I booted the Windows disk and started to repair Windows XP. When the computer had rebooted and was installing drivers, the box popped up about driver was not verified (Any relevance?), I clicked yes and then the installation stopped. No hard drive of progress for 30 min and then I rebooted. I have tried this 3 times but to no avail. I could reinstall Windows XP completely but I have files, setting and applications which cannot be reinstalled. I don’t know if it is ANYTHING to do with the driver or not but help would be APPRECIATED. I am stuck for ideas as I can’t copy the files using DOS because it is formatted in NTFS.

Thanks

Computer information:
ASUS P5B Motherboard
Intel pentium D 2.88GHz processer 800MHz FSB
Sapphire Radeon X1650PRO Graphics card
40GB Master Hard drive
250GB Secondary Hard drive
DVD Drive
Cd writer drive
Kingmax 512MB RAM DDRII 800MHz FSBDriver verification can be ignored...select continue anyways.
What repair method are you using step by step...

patio.   8-)Not backing up your data beforehand was a bit foolish. Your problem could be caused by bad hardware - either it is faulty or not assembled correctly - or by Windows not liking it. When changing the motherboard, it's best so start with a clean Windows installation to certainly rule out that possibilty, but that's not so easy here. If you have another computer you can add the harddrive as slave to retrieve information.

How far into Windows can you actually get? Can you "use" your computer?I can't use Windows. It is stuck on the instalation process. I have tried installing a copy onto the second hard drive and this works fine. But I can't access my files "Access Denined". This is proably becuse I have a password on my user, although I can see the Administrators account files? My documents are on a seconed partition and these are SAFE but I need to retrive files in my application settings such as, outlook.pst and my favorites. I am using Windows XP disk to repair windows.
I am assuming that now I will have to compleatly have to reinstall windows but I just need to recover ome files.Read this to recover access denied files

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421had similar problems myself recently, changed the motherboard reinstalled xp , now i get the pc suddenly restarting itself (i get message up after it STARTS again saying the system has recovered from a serious error and had to close send error report/do not send etc i always press send and it opens an internet page always saying the same THING about the drivers but not which ones and isnt much help) this can happen 0 - 10 times a day (more if i didnt give up) and often get a message up saying internet explorer/ msn messenger/ ntl netguard (or whatever programs are runnin has encountered a problem and needs to close which happens at least 5 times a day (annoying if you are in the middle of something)
Not sure whats causing this Anyone got any ideas ?? have tried to be as descriptive as possible but can answeres be in easy english pleaseIf you change motherboards a format and clean install of Windows is best.it was a clean install of windows and has been formattedDid you re-install all your device drivers ? ?

Solve : Resetting XP Pro Password??

Answer»

I have been given a computer with XP Pro on it. I was not given the administer password (the computer was given to the person who gave it to me, She did not know it either)

I should pass along that this is an older machine that likely started with windows 98 on it, and I do not have the CD with XP pro on it, trust me I would have dumped the hard drive and done a CLEAN install by now.

No here is where I show how little I really know. I have been advised to use Google Linux pass word cracker to do this. I have and everything that I have tried has failed.

I think I am just missing something I down load and put on CD and put in the CD drive of the computer with the unknown password started it and it boots completely ignoring the CD. I have done the same with a floppy, with same result.

I do have the CD with XP Media Center that shipped with my dell laptop. I really do not want to put my Media Center on the other computer as I do not want to violate the terms of services with Microsoft.

I have thought about buying a copy of XP home to use, but do not have $100 to spend at the moment.

Here check this piece of software out, I am not exactly sure how the demo works cause I have yet to try it but its worth a shot, the full version, well lets just say its about $250.I don't know if were GETTING into the'Twilight Zone',but check the
below site.

http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htmThanks for all the help however everything I have tried has failed. The computer with the unknown password ignores any CD I put in either of the two CD ROM. And any 3.5 floppy I get the non system error.

I have gone in to the bios and checked the boot settings which is A, CDROM, C.

I even put my XP Media Center CD that was shipped with my laptop that CD was ignored as well.

I think at this point I am going to set this aside, what I will do? I don’t know.

I have thought about getting XP home (When I have the cash) just not sure as I suspect will it get ignored as well.

Again thanks for all the help.

At least with a real copy you will have Microsoft support.

Everyone needs a real Window CD sooner or later. In this case it appears to be sooner. He said he tryed his XP Media Centre CD , that got to be real ... no one would pirate that.

"down load and put on CD" ...

I'm curious -  what was it that you downloaded?    Could it have been some version of Linux that is meant to be burned to CD, for a Live CD?    It sounds like it.
Got another computer that you can put that CD in and have a look at what is on it?    Can you give us a brief, general description?

I'm wondering if it is a bootable CD,  or if it has one big whopper of an ISO file on it.

And while you are at it, on that other computer,   might as well see if it will boot that computer.   If it is a bootable CD,  that would prove it.

Sometimes a person will download the bootdisk program and copy it to
a floppy disk.
You are supposed to download the file double click on it and it makes a
3.5 floppy disk for you to use to boot with.

Yep.   Above, I'd questioned it.  I suppose he hasn't had a chance to look and answer yet.     I was wondering if he'd find a big ol' ISO file on that CD.

Solve : I need help with a Blue Screen?

Answer»

Operating System:XP Pro, SP 2

After Norton AV 2006 discovered an adware program I allowed it to attempt removal. On restart boot stopped at a Blue Screen with a Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804F0380, 0xEB32D7CO, 0X00000000) error.

If I shut down and hit F8 on restart and choose last known config. I don't get the blue screen, but I get it again on the next boot unless I again hit F8.
XP Pro, eh? THe least painful thing to do is a system restore to a point before this. Do you remember what it was that was removed? You may ALSO want to test your RAM with the free download at www.memtest86.com if that doesn't do it for you.Norton tried to remove Adware Comon Name.

Startup Monitor detected an *.exe program would be loaded at startup and I allowed it. On restart I got the Blue Screen just as the log on screen comes up. I wish I would have written down the name of the exe program.

I have a ghost backup and I may use it next. I don't fully understand Memtest.

Several attempts at System Restore have been unsuccessful.

I did a search for Stop: 0x0000008E on the Microsoft Knowledge Base and I didn't find any thing helpful. A search for Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804F0380, 0xEB32D7CO, 0X00000000) came up empty. Here's over 62,000 possibilities. Start at the top:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Stop%3A+0x0000008E+

If the RAM is bad, then Windows is irrelevant.  GX1_Man,

Thanks, you got more relevant HITS than I did. I'm GOING to start with this one.

Exclamation My Fix for the STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005... BSOD / REBOOT
Greetings & Salutations!

For the past two days I have worked on two machines at the shop that would just reboot on thier own, after shutting off the Automatic Restart option. That wonderful STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005... BSOD APPEARED on the screen.

(Both machines worked fine till the users "Opened a file they received through msn messenger" )

Safe Mode works fine, just reboots in Normal Mode.

From safe mode cmd prompt only I scanned with F-Prot, Ad-Aware, SpyBot & HijackThis... All things cleaned up or shutoff...
(Norton was on one of the machines but it was not working and you didn't have enough time to check anything in Normal mode.)

Rebooted and within a few minutes... STOP: 0x0000008E again... rebooted in safe mode again shut everything off in MSConfig, ran Rootkit Revealer from sysinternals which found nothing... rebooted and same BSOD again...

Searched Google for 0x0000008E errors and got the standard, "Ram problem, Driver Problem, PS Weak... Tested Ram with memtest, changed the power supply and still no go...

Another site was talking about posting minidumps for them to look at, so I looked into one of the minidumps and found:

Rustock rootkit v 1.2
Z:\NewProjects\spambot\new\driver\objfre\i386\driv er.pdb

A little more Google revealed that this Rootkit, once installed is undetectable by anything, quite the amazing little piece of code...

Symantec's info on the Rustock Rootkit

This was it the B version... I followed the directions on Symantec's site to remove it by booting into recovery console from an XP CD. (You cannot detect it in Safe Mode)

Once there I used "Disable pe386" to shut off the rootkit... I looked while in safe mode for this service and it WAS NOT there... Since it loads with kernel / driver data, it hides everything about itself...

Symantec's Cleanup Instructions...

Rebooted in Normal mode and no more BSOD, reinstalled NAV and started it scanning when I left the shop... I will run ADSSpy again and see if it finds the alternate data stream now...

I realize that this is not the only cause of 0x8e errors but this was my problem, and since there were two machines in the shop with the same problem, I can see more of these coming in for repair...

Hope this helps those who have just recently developed STOP: 0x0000008E errors.

trollI resolved a blue screen on this computer by updating the video drivers.

I'll try Troll's post on another system on my home network tomorrow.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Solve : Error about Generic Host Process?

Answer»

So, my computer gets this error about every hour or so(been half a year now I think) while I'm online. It says:

"Generic HOST Process for Win32 Serviced had ENCOUNTERED a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

...and after I do/don't send error report, it won't let me do anything online (browse the web, chat, etc.). It says I'm still online and I can't disconnect, and in order to disconnect and have my internet work again I have to restart my computer. I also wasn't sure if I should post this under Internet Explorer help  since it has to do with my internet, but it also effects my compter, so sorry if it's at the wrong place.

I'm don't KNOW a WHOLE lot about computers, especially finding out my OS and crap, but from looking at EVERYONE else's I'm assuming this is the info (let you know I'm just listing randoms, sorry if theres too much info or not enough/helpful info ):

I want to install another instance of Windows XP Pro on the D: drive so I can dual boot.  The reason is I am beta TESTING software and I want a very controlled environment to run it on.  My normal computer usage requires a large variety of software running all the time.  So I think a dual boot option would be best.

Any reason I could not do that? And if I can, how do I proceed?

BTW, I have a HOME based business with 2 computers and a 5 user business site license so I can definately, legally, install another instance of WinXP ProBlah, I am just going to go ahead and try it, wish me luck  8-)It will work.  Should be no problem at all...when XP prompts you where you want to install just point it to D:

I have run many dual boot setups and i have to say XP handles it rather well.

Just keep in mind that when you boot to the 2nd install that D: BECOMES C: and C: becomes D:...just how it handles it.

patio.  8-)It was easy, I have done many dual boots before but never win xp with win xp, always with LINUX or win 2k or something.  Just wasn't sure if the OS would let you set up dual boot with well itself.

Solve : accessing a access denied file?

Answer»

My virus reported a infected file.  The software could not delete it.  I tried doing a search for the data and got a access denied.  How can I get to this file so I can attempt to remove it?  Here is the file name:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{BOC1725E-9F04-4801-B543-907F9F6E7064}\RP50\A0021700.exe

Any help is appreciated. To remove stubborn files, use Killbox.
Killbox is a very powerful TOOL, but be careful with it.
Make sure that the file is a virus or unwanted before you delete it though, as deleting files at RANDOM can cause massive problems. As would seem to be the case here.

What virus scanner?I'd be careful about deleting that file...Virus scan was by AOL/Mcaffee Quote

I'd be careful about deleting that file...
Because it's in the System Volume Information directory?
Or for some other reason?
I wasn't too sure whether it was legit or not which is why I said make sure it is unwanted before deleting. It's either a system file or a system restore...I see.
I thought it had to be something LIKE that with it being in that folder, but I wasn't sure exactly what.
That's also why it would be in use/access denied, then.
Thanks for clearing that up.Turning system restore off & back on might clear it.

You're hyper-active this morning Patio, did you miss us?

Solve : MS Outlook Folder SIze Question?

Answer»

Using MS Outlook 2003

I would like to be able to export the information about folder sizes that are received when you do "Properties" - "Folder Sizes..." against particular outlook folder.

The output as it stands cannot be cut & pasted, and when you have many subfolders it is very hard to use.

Ideally I would like to be able to export to excel so I can sort on the "Total Size" column & use this to remove any 0KB folders (i.e. ones I dont use anymore)

Any ideas?
Are you talking about Mail folders or what?  Yes - mail folders in Outlook.

For example I right click on "Personal Folders" inb the folder list pane in outlook and select "Properties for Personal Folders ... ". Then I click on the "Folder Size ... " button and it gives me a list of all the subfolders under "Personal Folders" and their size in KB. Its the data in this report that I want to esport to excel, word, txt ... anything I can manipulateI see no way to do that.  I suspect the capability was not programmed into Outlook because it's a rather unlikely user requirement.  Why do you want to do that? The reason I want to do it is that I now have hundreds of subfolders in my oultook "Personal Folders". For years I have been archiving off my Personal Folders PST to an offline PST every 3 months (to keep the size down), but have always mantained the same folder structure.

Now I have lots of folders that I have not used for a while and so they are empty in my current PST and in my last couple of archives - so I want to delete them to tidy up my folder structure.

I figured the simplest way to do that (rather than goign in to each folder & seeign if it is empty) was to run a folder size report & filter on all the 0KB folders to delete them

Maybe there is an alternative appraoch? You might try using Alt/Print Screen to get a screen print of the Properties panel but my system only displays 10 LINES at a time, so that might not be helpful.

Other than that, I think you'll just have to go down through the folders, selecting them one at time to view the contents.  The ones that are emply will QUICKLY be obvious.  When you find ones you want to delete, you can either right click on them and select Delete or use the Delete key. Here YA Go...

A Freebie.

patio.  8-)tombrown, if you try the utility patio mentioned, please let us know whether it worked.  I think it may not because Outlook's folders are internal to Outlook; they do not appear in Windows Explorer the way regular folders do.Thanks for the freebie.

I would need to jump through a few hoops with my IT support to allow me to install it, and looking at the web page it does seem to be for explorer folders rather than outlook mail folders - so I'm not sure.

Patio - can you clarify whetehr this will ALSO work for mail folders inside Outlook?Sorry i don't, haven't and PROBABLY never will use Outlook...i'm a TBird guy.

I'd suggest sending the IT guy to her site...he might be impressed with some of her free tools. She's been around since the DOS days and i believe she also wrote for PCMag or Window's mag at one time.

Solve : At first, this was funny...?

...now, it's not.

At first, the very idea that Windows is TRYING to protect me from itself was a humorous business. It was funny... the first time. Having encountered this about 3 times, however, it has ceased to be funny and is annoying me.

It started about the beginning of this week. It seems to be that it does this when the computer has been on a LONG time (i.e. almost every day). What the heck is Data Execution Prevention griping about, and why is is closing Windows?

WinXP SP2. What are you using for antivirus protection and when is the last time you scanned for viruses?Run the Dilbert Dilbert. What, another format and reinstall so soon?   Quote

What are you using for antivirus protection and when is the last time you scanned for viruses?

I scanned on last... Friday or Saturday, I think... the vacation kinds blends together. But it was within the last 7 days. I run:

AVG Free 7.5
SpyBot - Search and Destroy
SpywareBlaster
A2 Free

I ALSO use HijackThis every two weeks or so (I did last... whenever), and I have ZoneAlarm Free as a firewall.

Reinstall?? I haven't reinstalled Windows in... *checks* Uh... it doesn't say... about 3 months, maybe? I did it right before school started, so that'd be in LATE August... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875351Thats happened to me a few Times this week since i installed SecondLife

Solve : XP automatically logs into local admin account?

Answer»

Recently, I DISABLED the startup login screen in Windows XP PROFESSIONAL SP2 through Running "control userpasswords2" and unchecking the box that required a username and pass on startup.  It worked, but not in the way I'd expected; my next boot was directly into not my personal account, but the default "Administrator" account.  (My personal account is also SET to Administrator access.)  I tried disabling the default Administrator account, but when I rebooted, I was sent to the Welcome screen with the message "Your account has been disabled.  Please contact your administrator."

Assistance in configuring my computer to boot into my personal account by default would be greatly appreciated.Download TweakUI for XP from >here<.  Run TweakUI.  Logon->Autologon.  Enter the required details.TweakUI is not necessary. You were on the right track with "control userpasswords2".

When you first unchecked the "users must enter password" or whatever that checkbox is, and clicked OK it would have asked you for a username and password. By default, this would have been Administrator, which by default does not have a password. For this REASON it would have been really easy to simply hit OK, which would in turn boot you into the Administrator user from now on.

To fix the ISSUE, simply run the "control userpasswords2" again, and check the "users must enter a user name and password" check box again, and then apply. Then uncheck it again and hit OK. You should be prompted for a username and password. This is the username you want it to automatically login with each time, so put your personal username and password.

That should do it! That did indeed do it, thanks.

Solve : Boot up problem (Windows XP)?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Pro on another computer and I am unable to get to the bootscreen. I used to have a selection between a custom bootscreen and the windows XP one. I tried to remove the custom one and now I fear I MAY have screwed up the boot.ini or the ntoskrnl file. I have my windows XP disk and I have tried to replace the boot.ini file but I am unsure if I am doing it correctly.

Any help would be appreciated. What happens is I turn my computer on, and it RUNS up until the bootscreen should come up, then the monitor says "no signal" and it reboots straight away without the bootscreen coming up at all. After reboot It then comes up with the OPTION of running windows normally, in safe mode, last known working configuration.. all of them have the same result. I can press delete to get into setup and I can load up the Windows XP CD.

Heres what i've been trying in the recovery console etc. and what has been coming up:

-------------

bootcfg /list.

Total entries - 4
[1] Microsoft Windows XP Professional
[2] Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (Bootscreen)
[3] Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
[4] Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (Bootscreen)

--------------

CHKDSK /p

- The Volume appears to conatin one or more unrecoverable problems.

---------------

bootcfg /add

Identified Windows Installs: 1
Select Installation to add: I press 1
Enter load IDENTIFIER: I type Microsoft Windows XP Proffesional
Enter OS Load options: I type /fastdetect

---------------

When I go in to the Windows XP Pro Setup it gives me three options

- To set up windows on selected ITEM press enter
- To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C
- To delete selected Partition press D.

If I choose to set up windows by pressing enter it comes up with
"You have chosen to install windows XP on a partition that contains another operating system".

Solve : Windows Stops Responding?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm having a very strange problem. First time I've run into a problem of this kind. My computer works fine for a while and then Windows Explorer stops responding. It's not one of those ones with a "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." type errors, but rather, when I open My Computer, My DOCUMENTS, or any folder in general, I can't access the drives or files. Double clicking does nothing, simply highlights the files. The drop-down menus also stop responding. Sometimes they won't drop at all. The blue toolbar on the left side disappears. I've run virus and spyware checks and they came up clean. Anybody know what's happening?Windows version? Service pack? What was happening when this occurred? Other issues? Any recent software changes? Does doing a system restore help? More details? It's Windows XP SP2. It doesn't seem to affect any other programs. Firefox, IE and any program works fine. Restore hasn't helped. Quote

Solve : Choosing Sound Channel when viewing Media Files?

Answer»

I downloaded a video file (rmvb file), it has two SOUND channels in two different languages

In the past versions of WMP, I could look it up in the menu and find AUDIO channel selection or SOMETHING, and I can listen to that channel from 2 speakers

but now I can't do that anymore, I need to drag the balance to the left to listen to the channel I want to listen to... leaving the right speaker with no sound at all

Is there any chance that I can fix this PROBLEM without finding previous WMP versions?
I used RealPlayer to play it too, but to no avail, I can't find that option

Thanks

Solve : Managing startups?

Answer»

I was wondering if there is anyway to make like a startup PROFILE?  Basically I would like to be able to boot up the computer with all my security software and other tools I need running, and I would like a 2nd startup option that has only the bare minimum for when I play Vanguard.

And ideally, an easy way to switch between the two startup scenarios.

Any suggestions?Maybe two user accounts?
And then you could easily switch between the two.
Just an idea.
Or just shut everything down when you want to play games.Another way this can be managed is a new HARDWARE profile. Create a second one and at boot you will be asked which one to use. Use the second one for your gaming needs and trim whatever processes needed...

An excellent guide to a gaming profile setup was penned by Black Viper. Although not around at PRESENT the guide is HOSTED majorgeeks website.

Solve : Bit of a problem with a black screen! Help please??

Answer»

Hey all.

Bit of a problem with my other PC. When I boot, it loads Windows XP SP2 and then after the loading bar has finished it should go to the logon screen but instead it goes onto a black screen. I can't press Ctrl+Alt+Del, it does nothing. I'm not too sure what the problem is and I don't want to format it because I have many files which are important to me on it.  :-/

Anyone got an idea what to do?Are you sure the button on your monitor hasnt been turned to dark or have you tried another monitor to make sure that is not the reason?  Have you tried going into safe MODE so that you can fix the problem if there is ONE??  Have you tried restoring it back towhen it did work properly? Lots of things you can do.I can't restore because it doesn't boot windows properly.

I know it's not the monitor, because it tries to load XP and I can see the loading bar which you usually see before the WELCOME screen, after that there is a black screen. It's not the monitor.. Thanks anyway.

Still stuck though, any ideas?Safe mode means press F8 a few times before the Windows logo appears. Please try what is suggested and REPORT back. You can get to SYSTEM restore from there as well.  I've tried safe mode :-/

It has the same problem.I think it may be your video card.It also may be a ram problem.  How many beeps do you get when it first is loading? If it was video the screen at boot wouldn't show at all...

This sounds like a Windows problem...have you let it sit for awhile at the black screen to see if it recovers ? ?

patio.  8-)Patio, you're the first person to have said anything valid :p

Yeah, i've tried that already but thanks and its a good idea anyway!

Solve : Troubleshooting 3 year old Dell Dimension?

Answer»

Hi all.
My friend has a problem PC he asked me to have a look at.
It's a 3 year old Dell Dimension with XP Home (I think), not sure of the model number.
It starts to boot, and then says "Primary device not FOUND, press F1 to continue or F2 to do something else" (can't remember exactly what it said because I literally was with the PC for 1 minute).
I pressed F1, and it then gives me the SCREEN where you can choose safe MODE, LAST known good config, and so on.
I chose Safe Mode, and it blue screened, UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.
Any ideas?
I think this means the hard drive is dead, but I'm not sure.
I can get a little more info if needed, but it won't boot so don't ask me to RIGHT click or anything lol.
Thanks in advance.
Calum.Yep those error point to a problem with the HDD, But before you go out ad buy a new one check all the cables and make sure there not the fault, some times another faulty device on the same cable can case a problem so disconnect the CD ROM if its on the Same cable and try again

ill be going off line now , some one else might give you further instructionsThanks, I'll check the cables too when I get time.
That was going to be the next thing I did, but I won't be able to do it soon because it's not my PC and my friend won't know what to do, even if I tell him.

Solve : Recursing Registry settings for user Profiles??

Answer»

I'm not even sure if this is possible - i've done QUITE a bit of searching without any luck...

We've made UPDATES to a base OS that we use for all of our deployed PCs. We'd love to be able to update some of these settings to the current client base, but quite a few of the changes involved user-specific keys.  Of course, this all works great if it's a new system, as each new profile is created, they get the correct settings.

Problem is, that the current client base OBVIOUSLY already has profiles setup for WHOEVER is using the PC. Sometimes it's just one user, sometimes multiple.  Is there some kind of script that could would enable running through HKEY_USERS and inputting updated registry settings for each profile?  We're also trying to avoid using group POLICY for this if at all possible.  Our standard PCs are HP/Compaq PCs and laptops running WindowsXP SP2 - at least 256MB memory or more. We distribute applications and settings using Altiris Notification and Deployment Servers.  Hope this is enough info...

Solve : random shutdown prompts or sent to welcome screen?

Answer»

This problem is stumping me...and driving me nuts!

Windows XP Pro SP2
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz
512 RAM
Running on an APC UPS

Randomly, one of two things happens. either:
1) I get booted out to the welcome screen with no warning (my user is still logged in, programs still running), or
2) all programs I have open are closed without warning and I get the Standby/Shutdown/Restart prompt. I can cancel the prompt (I usually get two prompts at once), but it's already too late because it has already shut all programs and I lose whatever I'm doing.

Situation 1 has been happening for some time, but we were never really sure what was causing it because multiple people use this machine. We need to leave a particular user actively logged in at all time, so we NOTICE when it's booted out...i'll explain more about this in a minute. Situation 2 has just started happening, and is much more annoying since I can't even get a full virus scan COMPLETED without it getting killed because of it. Before today I have never been in front of the machine to see these things happen, but I have now seen both happen while I was working on the machine, and one or the other seems to be OCCURING at least once an hour. It is clearly getting worse.

Now for a little background: This is an older (YET still relatively beefy) machine that we recently started using as a file server and a demo NVR (video recorder) server. We have the audio playing over a speaker system in our office that indicates when users log onto the NVR system...for this reason, the main user needs to always be ACTIVELY logged in. When still logged in, but on the welcome screen (as if switching users)...no audio. However, we use Windows Remote Desktop to get into this machine, so I tweaked it to allow multiple users to log into this machine at once (as if it were server platform) using the following instructions: http://sig9.com/articles/concurrent-remote-desktop. This way, we could leave the main user logged in all the time but still get in remotely with other users. I'm only mentioning this, in case this issue is some sort of side affect???

I've been running several virus scans and have not yet found anything, although as mentioned I have not had a full scan successfully without being kicked out. I've scanned by section, but not every file.

Someone please help!!!

Thanks in advance  :-?

What about an online scan like from www.trendmicro.com or Panda? Spyware scans could be helpful as well. Any other anomalies?I did try the TrendMicro online scan...housecall..couldn't get through it before it got shut down by the shutdown prompt.

Yesterday we were able to get through a spybot search and destroy scan, and repaired all found. It hasn't happened yet since we were successful with that. Is it really possible that spyware could be this troubling to a machine? I'm not convinced that spywhere was really the problem....Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery and untick "automatically restart on errors...save exit and re-boot. Now when you have errors you will be greeted with the BSOD which will show cryptic error messages which will help to narrow down the culprit...

Multi user machines are always tougher to diagnose because of the variables at play.

Solve : Outlook Express backup ??

Answer»

Hello,

I just got a new PC... ( was the time for it ). I NEED to move all my Outlook Express mail from the old pc to this new one.. Anyone can help? ( I know how to move folders, but I don't know how to COPY signatures, rules, settings, and contacts ) You could use a THIRD party OE backup tool such as Outlook Express Backup Wizard.  For doing it manually, here's a good reference: How to backup Outlook Express (OE) Email.  And, here's Microsoft's page on How to back up and recover Outlook Express data.

I've used a manual procedure in cases where I've needed to migrate OE from one computer to another.  The Microsoft reference is a good explanation of the manual procedure.Hello,

Thank you for the reply. I did a search on the net and found also: http://www.amicutilities.com/outlook-express-backup/ That seems to be good one, ASSUMING the awards and testimonials are genuine.  So, if you don't mind SPENDING some money for software to do this, you should a tool that makes it easy to backup OE.

Solve : log on screen help?

HI - as you have guessed im new here. Im not much on computers so please bear with me.
I have a HP LAPTOP and it was working just fine. I went into the HOSPITAL to have knee replacement surgery and when I got home I can no longer log onto the computer. a microsoft window logon screen comes on for your screen name and password, i put them in and it will not regonize any of them. I have never seen this screen before. its just a square box with the microsoft logo and says screen name and password. i know the screen names and passwords are correct. where do i go from here? :-?
thank you Was this a company laptop that you used at work, but now are using from home? If so you might have may have to authenticate against a domain server.

If this is a home computer, and no one has accessed the computer to change your password while you were gone, you might have gotten infected with a password killer virus or hack attack.

Also be sure that the CAPS LOCK key isn't on in which a password would fail due to case sensitivity. Also check the NUMBER LOCK Key, if you use numbers in your password, be sure the Number Lock key is active.

Usually these problems are due to Caps Lock or Number Lock, or if it is a company laptop that is used outside of its Domain in which an Offline Local Profile should load, or you might need to switch to a Local Profile vs the Company Domain name.

Good Luck... Davethis is a personal laptop, and I double checked the cap lock and number keypad (although there are no numbers in passwords)
I believe it has a virus---where do i go now? I can't even sign on to run a virus checkWhat version of Windows? Are you the only user? Can you log on with the Administrator account? How many user accounts are on there? Do you have a real XP CD? Can you GET into safe mode?

2 users on laptop, windows XP with a real disc, tell me how to get into safe mode, i will do that, then what do i do from there?

Solve : Default Printer Issues?

Answer»

I've started a new job and apparently everyone in the office has the same issue with default printers. No matter what anyone chooses as a default printer, when they shut off or reboot their computers, all of them reset to one particular printer as the default. This "default default" printer is "Auto HP Officejet Series 7300". While this will usually function as a printer, it's interminably slow to finally spool to the printer. What we're TRYING to choose is "HP Officejet Series 7300". They've even tried deleting the "Auto HP Officejet" from the control panel but it always returns when the computers are restarted, and it is always the default printer.

Does anyone know what's going on here, and what can be done to fix it? Hardly urgent, but definitely annoying.Does your office have a DEEP Freeze Software INSTALLED, if you look at the clock on the right side of the screen on the bottom, click on the arrow that hids the unused icons. Then look for like a bear, or a safe with ice all over it, or something like that, then hold left SHIFT and double click on it, if you have that, then there is only one thing to do, talk to MANAGER to disable that. Basiacly what that does is, Any Changes to the computer will be deleted when restarted, in this case is what you have. When Changing the printers, and saving files to the desktop after restart it will all be deleted.
P.S. I may be wrong but that is what we have in our college.Nope, nothing at all like that installed on any of the computers. Nothing in the TRAY, and nothing in the installed programs.Who manages the network there? It should be a simple matter to fix this for the right person. It's an office with three people in it, so no one actually "manages" the network. None of us are idiots when it comes to computers, but none of us have any idea what's going on with this. We'll call in a pro if we need to, but in a small office, it's always better not to spend the money if you don't absolutely have to.Is it a simple workgroup or a domain server?A simple workgroup on a Linksys wired network. All of the machines have Windows XP.

Solve : Outlook contacts format question?

Answer»

The IT department of the COMPANY I work for have exported all the contacts in our global contacts folder to Excel where I tidied them up and they then re-imported them back into Excel. Unfortunately the DESIRED format for the telephone numbers does not seem to be working.

The standard format for telephone numbers is +44 (0) 20......

We would like the telephone number to look like this: +44 20.... so that it is compatible with the Directors' PDAs.

The numbers are all in this format in excel but when they have been imported the '+' sign has been lost....

To make matters worse when you OPEN the indivudual record, and open up the telephone number field it then puts another +44 infront of the number because the default country is the UK (which is correct) so the number then looks like: +44 44 20....

To complicated matters further the default country is the UK regardless of what country the address states.

My IT department says the only way to fix this is to go into each record individually and manually change the number.

There are 1000 RECORDS and I really don't have time.....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Solve : Standby mode freezes my computer?

Answer»

I am running Window XP. Standby mode has ALWAYS made my computer freeze - to the point where NOTHING works and i have to switch it off at the WALL. Therefore i never used it.

However, yesterdayand today every now and then, when i move the mouse, and the screen saver clears, i am left with the XP screen saying "preparing for standby mode" .

This is only happening on occasion and the rest of the time, the screen saver clears like normal and the screen goes back to whatever i was working on. I can not pinpoint that i'm doing anything different from when it's normal to when the "preparing for standby mode" screen appearsI can't tell you why it's happening, but I can tell you how to disable standby so you won't have the PROBLEM any more

Right-click on your desktop and choose Properties.
On the Screen Saver tab click the Power button.
Set the SYSTEM Standby option to Never.

I tend to prefer to prevent my computers from entering standby (even my laptop) because of issues similar to this in the past. I know there are known issues with standby with certain virus protection programs.

Hope this helps!thanks so so much! You've helped heaps. no problem

Solve : Lag problem with game?

Answer» FIRSTLY, I'd like to say that I did go through the previous postings and although there were people with the same subject, they had slighlty different problems [as far as I could tell]

My laptop runs everything fine and dandy, except when it comes to games like Unreal, Counterstrike, IGI etc
It starts running the games fine, but from time to time it starts to lag ... badly! [the game is being played offline INCASE you were wondering]
I couldn't figure out what the problem was, went to tasklist and made sure that only the basic programs were running. I even formatted my PC and reinstalled Windows but the problem persists.
I have a P4 1.86 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 64 MB ATI Radeon 9000 Dell laptop.

Anyone have any ideas about what the problem could be???64 MB ATI Radeon 9000 Quote

Seconded.
It's rather an old card, and low end even then.
It will struggle to even play any modern game.
Doesn't make the whole computer bad, it's an OK PC, but it's just not cut out to be a gaming machine.
Sorry. You may have other problems, Unreal should fly on your computer.

You'd think so but I feel it may be related to a pebcak, we will see, stay tuned. Pebcak . . . pebcak . . . hmm . . . *looks it up* . . . LOL!
Indeed it may be.

Will do.Pebcak huh? ... hehe, I wonder.

The windows CD I used was the one I got along with my laptop, I'm wondering if that might have something to do with it .... since the Dell chaps make the CD with certain settings that are different from DEFAULT Windows installation settings.

If anyone has any ideas beyond this then thanks a lot.
If not then thanks anyways ... this thing seems like too much pain for almost nothing now.Pain? I'm feeling no pain.
Don't worry about that pebcak thing, we're pretty lighthearted around here.
How about a hijackthis log so we can see what's running? If the CD you are using is a restore CD (rather than a real Windows CD) you may want to see if newer drivers are available.

If it is a real Windows CD did you load all of the necessary drivers?I checked for newer drivers and that did the trick.

Thanks guysGlad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting BACK.

Solve : dragging directory setting problem?

Answer»

Hello,

I use Windows XP.
Here is the problem:
Suppose I have a directory named "X" containing files y and Z, and in another
PLACE a directory of the same name "x" containing files y and w.
Then if I drag the first directory to this place, the file y and z takes place in the
second directory (as desired), but the file "w" in the second directory do not disappear (as not desired). In other words, dragging directories do not overwrite directories of the same name, but only add files.
What setting can I do to make this happen?

Thanks.
Are you saying the files of the same name are ALWAYS going to be identical in content and you always want to override the file in the directory to which you're dragging another directory?  In other words, y in directory 1 will always be the same as y in directory 2?  If so, what created the duplication in the first place?

And, since no file named "w" was in the directory to which you were dragging a directory, why would you want w to disappear?  Whatever the reason, I believe you'll have to do some manual screening.  If you really don't want w, then you NEED to manually delete it.

Solve : (Hopefully) quick Active File Recovery question?

Answer»

Hello,

I committed the cardinal "Save" instead of "Save As" SIN on one of my Excel spreadsheets and lost quite a bit of data. I tried the Control F1 trick to see if it would bring up older documents as well as searching for any backup files Window may have KEPT. Would a .bak file be found? I ALSO tried restoring my computer to the day before, but that didn't work either.

I can't think of anything else to try, so I was looking into the Active File Recovery program. Is anyone familiar with the program and do you think it will give me what I need, or am I SOL? If so, which VERSION of the program would best suit my needs?

Thanks to all....the year can only get better from here, RIGHT?

If you wish to Install it instead of XP , you MUST do a clean install ....... That means formatting your hd ...... and then install the new operating system ....... or are you talking about dual booting ?

Solve : Make Primary partition Logical?

Answer»

Win 98.se - TWO hard drives.

Is it possible to change the condition of the first partition on the slave drive from Primary to Logical without data loss?

You may wish to restate your question. One, up to four, partitions can be can be "primary". The term  " does not refer to quality or even structure. It refers to  something most users do not need to think about.  If there is one primary partition, another partition can be an extended portion. The extended is divided into one or more logical partitions. I think the max is 16. You do not want to  MAKE just an extended partition without there being at least one primary. Again, the reason for this is not something the average users even needs to think about. There is no MEANINGFUL performance issue. Before doing anything to your hard drive, make a full backup on either DVD or an external Hard Drive.  Geek9pm, thank you for your interest.

I have three partitions on the master drive and two on the slave.  When MS-Dos assigns drive letters the primary partition on the master is C: then the primary partition on the slave is D:.  Following that logical partitions on the master are ASSIGNED E: and F: then the logical partition on the slave is assigned G:.  This means that partitions C: E: and F: are on the master while D: and G: are on the slave.

See the MS Kb here.

Para 4. in the above states that:
Quote

If a second physical hard disk is found, and a primary partition exists on the second physical drive, the primary MS-DOS partition on the second physical hard drive is assigned the letter D.

so I presume that if a primary partition does not exist on the slave then MS-Dos will assign drive letters to logical partitions sequentially, assigning  D: and E: to the master and F: G: to the slave.

My slave drive has a primary partition which I want to change to logical without losing files.  Is that achievable :-?

I know that there are other ways of re-assigning drive letters, such as the Letter Assigner utility, but with the ones I've tried so far the assignments are not fixed for use by other programs, such as Partition Magic which ignores the re-assignments.

Thanks again. Quote

Thank you.

It fails to boot by stalling at a SCREEN that has a horizontal band of blue/white GIBBERISH COVERING about 1/3 of the screen.

How do I test the hd?  MS-DOS debug?

I know how to remove/REPLACE the hd.  Should I?You can test the drive with free diagnostics from the appropriate drive maker's site. If unsure, use SeaTools from www.seagate.com

This RUNS before Windows loads so it removes that variable. If it fails the fitness test, then it is time to replace.

Solve : some window drop down menus are blank?

Answer»

Some window features are blank. For example, 1. add remove programs... no programs prior to yesterday come up. Things I installed yesterday do however. 2. The window in IE , tools, internet options, security, custom ...is blank.  I finally get an error message "Dr. WATSON Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close 3.I can not install ActiveX when I try to do Windows updates
4. My networks does not work.

I really want to try and trouble SHOOT this rather than reinstall Windows XP.
Thanks a lot  Sounds LIKE you have a virus infection to me.
When did this start?
What happened before it started?
What malware protection do you have?I ran spy bot, adaware and had my hijack this log checked. Everything is clean.  I really don't know when this actually started.  I can  not run House call because I can't load ActiveX.Do you have an antivirus program or firewall? No.  I ususally us House Call but I can't now because I can't load ActiveX.  The window to select a firewall doesn't work now either. This sounds like a virus infection to me then.
Having no virus protection is a recipe for disaster.
What do you mean by this?
Quote

The window to select a firewall doesn't work now either.
Which window?
And what firewall?Contorl panel, network connections, change window firewall settings does not work. I also can not download any files using IE or Firefox.  I get an message that my security level won't allow it.  I go to tools, internet options, advanced and the box is blank.  This seems to be where a lot of my problems lead back to.  I can't download ActiveX so that I can do a free virus scan.
Do you get that message with Firefox too?
Windows firewall isn't very good, I'd recommend a proper firewall.
I know you can't download anything at the minute, but bear that in mind.Yes it is the same in Firefox.  I am running an old House Call lpt. file.  I am wondering if installing iTunes would have caused all this.iTunes is annoying to some, but I don't THINK it would cause this sort of problem.
Is the error message the same in Firefox?
What exactly does it say?It just says Windows installer cannot be ACCESSED.  When I try to download the housecall file it says I need a java add on.  I click to get it and the error message is "Windows installer cannot be accessed.

When I use IE it says it needs ActiveX and then won't let me get it when I click on the information bar.  And the tools.... advance is blank.I'll admit I don't know here.
Better for me to admit defeat now rather than start guessing, eh?  Otherwise I might make some disastrous mistake.
I will say it sounds quite serious.
I think the best way is to start from scratch.
However, I'm not sure.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than myself can advise you here.
Good luck. Thanks a lot.  I appreciate your time and effort. No problem, hope you get sorted. What about your processes in the task manager's process window. Can you see anything running that seems like it shouldnt?

Solve : favorites and connecting with ie7?

Answer»

A short time back, maybe two months, I GOT prompted to upgrade my ie to 7.  It was probably when I was checking for updates on the dell or ms site.  The statements about better security seemed worthwhile so I upgraded.
Now I have a couple of issues I'm trying to resolve.

First, I have a lot of favorites in a LOT of FOLDERS.  I would like the favorites to display like EXPLORER where you can expand and collapse the list.  However the list is all expanded; i.e. all folders and subfolders are explanded, making the list very long.
Is there some option I can't find that would allow the favorites to display like explorer???
This kind of limited functionality is why I don't like ie.  I just continue to use at at home because I have to use at work.

Second, when I connect to the internet (still using dial-up), a short time after getting connected, a window pops up (Dial-up Connection) essentially PROMPTING me to connect.  But I'm still connected.  If I CLOSE that window, my connection closes.
Is there some option I don't have set properly?
My kids use this same computer, but this does not happen to them when they connect to the internet.  But that hasn't helped my find the option or cause.

Thank you.
