Solve : Uninstall Previous Drivers for XP?

Answer»

I know to download the new drivers but dont install, then uninstall the previous version and when i restart install the new ones. But i have a couple questions. First of all how will you be able to see whats on your computer? since the display drivers arent there how will you even be able to see to install the new ones? and Second of all what if you only have one driver installed? like when you right click and go to properties > settings and there's only one display, no option for other display's.

(Would the uninstall and install new drivers work for a desktop? an old desktop? just wondering)

Thanks if any of you know these answers! Quote from: MizzRock on September 06, 2008, 09:41:20 AM

If you uninstall the driver for your video hardware Windows will still be able to use default VGA diver.

What do you mean by "only one driver", and "other displays"?

You can do it via Device Manager. Thanks guys! you really helped me understand this. What i was talking about was when i go to settings and look under the screen's that say 1 and 2 i only have once option there, i used to have two. Im on my laptop now and when i go there it says 1. multiple monitors on nvidia geforece fx go5200 and when i click the arrow another display option shows up it says 2. default monitor on nvidia GEFORCE fx go5200, Does it matter if i have 2options there? cause i believe i had 2options on the desktop before all the WEIRD stuff started happening.I don't fully understand what you mean.

Do you mean this?
Yes i mean that.It means your computer can SUPPORT a dual monitor setup:

Solve : I have a problem with my files...?

Answer»

I don't know if this is the correct forum, but I do have a windows xp. Anyway, I keep all my music on the portable harddrive that's connected to my dad's computer (I have a laptop). Suddenly, I don't know why, the order of all the files in my folders CHANGED to alphabetical. This wouldn't matter, but now my iTunes can't locate any of the files because they aren't in the same place! How do I fix this without having to re-upload all my music onto iTunes? If in a folder you select ''view - details'' - you should have options to view all file aspects.

By name (or inverse name if you click on 'name") ..... DATE modified ... or REVERSE ...... file type .. and so on.

In win explorer go to ''tools - folder options" - MAKE a change to suit.thanks, that helped

Solve : f disking my friends laptop?

Answer»

I know that you all say to check out as much info as you can before posting.  I was looking through a lot of the old posts, but to no avail did I find anything to help me out.

So, my question is.. my friend has this DELL "Inspirion 600m"  It's his girlfriends and now were in college again so he would like to use it, but when you get into the desktop you can't do anything.  By anything I mean that it keeps popping up so much [crap] about the internal programs not working and not loading and all that... You can't even do anything from surf the web to write a essay on Word.

I just want to wipe this thing clean and reformat it.  Do I need to use any of the restore disks I got with my Dell VOSTRO and put them into the other dell .. or can I just wipe this clean THEN put in all my disks I got with MY laptop?

Either hitting F2 or F12 but there was NOTHING in there that said reformat or wipe clean.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks for listening to this 30 yr old Novice.

MikeyRestore CDs will work only with computer they were made for. You need Windows CD to format, and reinstall.

Solve : EXCEL crashing on resize command?

Answer»

Hi, all. I'm new to the site and I hope I am following the rules correctly to ask for help with my problem.

Here it is: The following message has started appearing when, in EXCEL, I try to change the % size view of the spreadsheet I am working on.

THE ERROR MESSAGE: "The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\1033dwintl.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your INSTALLATION diskette."

After several clicks on "OK" the error message disappears, EXCEL closes, and I am sent back out to my desktop as THOUGH I had never opened the FILE or the program. I can relaunch EXCEL with no problem, and do what I want, but if I try to change that % size-- BOOM! back out to the desktop! I don't know how to "...check this against [the] installation diskette.", and the error message doesn't say how to, either.

(I am running Office 2000 Premium and I have all the latest updates from the Microsoft site as WELL as a clean system thanks to Kaspersky. My "Help" files disappeared recently so I reloaded OFFICE and that had no effect on this problem.)

What's going on here?

Thank you.Probably, your copy of 1033dwintl.dll is corrupted or else you have a version which is not compatible with your version of Office.

If you have the installation disc, pop it in and see whether it offers an option to repair an existing installation (not guaranteed to work though!).  Alternatively, try googling "download 1033dwintl.dll" to find a site where you can download a new copy, and save it to your System32 folder.  (Don't pay for it - there are sites which let you download it free).I should have asked, what version of Windows are you running?  Because if you download the file, it will be the Windows XP version for sure, and if you are running Windows 95/98/Me, it won't work.I am using XP, so hopefully the download you suggested will work. I'm going to Google around for that file now. Thank you.

Solve : Cant access a website..?

Answer»

Hi there.  out of the blue, we cant access www.carmax.com from our HOME computer anymore.  The site is currently up and RUNNING, because I can access it from work.  No changes have been made to our computer, and absolutely everything else WORKS just fine.  I tried to send myself a link from another computer, and that wouldnt work either.  What the heck is going on and how do I fix it?  I routinely get my updates, do clean-ups/defrags, and check for spyware/adware.  Thanks in advance...What happens when you try to access it? What browser?Check your browser settings, and make sure it doesnt BLOCK any sites or anything.Browser is Internet explorer. When I try to access the page it says "I/E can't access webpage", then it lists I think 3 possible causes (cant connect to internet, page is down and something else), none of which apply.  Try this yet?

Solve : External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed?

Answer»

Is there any way to keep the same drive letter (in this case, E) for my external HARD drive?  I plugged a printer into my laptop yesterday, and how my EHD has become drive F. Now none of my shortcuts or file locations work any more.  The EHD is a plug-and-play device CONNECTED via a USB port.

1) Can I change it back to E somehow?
2) Can I set it so that it will always be drive E?

I've tried removing the printer and the hard drive, then rebooting with just the hard drive.
I've tried uninstalling the hard drive via device manager, reconnecting and rebooting.  It still says F.

My next thought is to do a system restore back a couple days, but even if I do this, I'd like to know if there is a way to permanently assign drive E to this device.

Thank you!!Well, it looks like I may have solved my own problem:

START --> Control Panel  --> ADMINISTRATIVE Tools  --> Computer MANAGEMENT.

In the left pane, expand Storage, and then choose Disk Management.  Select the external hard drive and from the right-click menu, select Change Driver Letter and Paths.  Select the drive, click the Change button, and then change the letter in the drop-down box.To have it retain the drive letter even if more drives/devices are added give it a Volume Label as well in the Disk Management window...

Solve : Previous users still existing?

Answer»

So heres the dealio...
I made a USER (TEST)because it was a test...) but after i made it I did system restore to a point before I made "test", but when i go to C:\Documents and settings\ there is still a folder there for the user.

Even though i can no longer log on to it. Can i delete this folder?Did you delete test user from User accounts in Control Panel? No I did system restore to a point before i made the test, and it is not listed in the user control panelI'm pretty sure, you can delete that folder.System Restore rarely deletes any system settings...it's more designed for replacing things that have been changed.
If you WANT to Test things DLoad and install Total Uninstall and ALSO set up a NEW Hardware Profile to keep things seperate....works for me.

Solve : How Do I Use System Restore from within XP Recovery Console?

Answer»

I have a 4 or 5 year old Dell 4600 which appears to have had XP REINSTALLED on the same partition, without having first deleted the partition.  Each time the machine boots up, the user is forced to select one of two instances of Windows XP shown as being on the machine.  In addition, the display flickers constantly, and EVENTUALLY, the machine locks up, especially when trying to download a file, and when clicking on "my computer".  From within Disk Management, I see only one partition, described as Active/Primary/Healthy.   I believe the System Restore utility is available from within the XP Recovery Console, which I have used several times to try to repair an installation, but I don't recall any access to System Restore.  I have the view that, if I can GO back a month or so, maybe I can get the machine stable enough to try to do some investigating. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction to System Restore from the XP Recovery Console?Have you tried booting in safe mode?

Try and reboot in Safe Mode ( by pressing F8 repeatedly during the boot up process), in Safe Mode there is a Admin account that you should be able to change the password in.Go into your display settings and untick the following box:  "On resume, password protect"

Click Apply and/or OK and you won't be bothered with it any more.

Solve : PLEASE HELP MY ICONS AND WINDOWS ARE SUPER SIZED!?

Answer»

My Icons, windows and everything else are super sized.

I have tried all of the right click option and they didn't work. I have also tried rolling the mouse while holding the conrol button. Nothing is working. Please tell me you have another idea.

By the way I have XP if this helps.Did you try this: right-click on an empty space on the desktop>Properties>Settings tab, change screen resolution by moving SLIDER to the right. That's happened to me a lot.  Try what drmsucks said, but if everything is too BIG for you to see the screen resolution slider, as has happened to me before, try pressing tab twice in the settings tab to select it, then move the slider by pressing the right arrow key.  Also, if you turn off your computer and then restart it, windows should show a balloon after you log in that says your screen resolution is too small to display all icons.  Clicking on it should automatically adjust the screen resolution to display the desktop icons.  Just out of curiosity, what changed your screen resolution?Nice tip, typhoeus. Thanks guys! Unfortunately, it is still too big. There must be something I can do.  Did you download anything before this started happening?  Another option you can try is system RESTORE to a time before this issue happened... Quote from: Hopeandme on September 04, 2008, 10:09:16 PM

Thanks guys! Unfortunately, it is still too big. There must be something I can do.
What Screen Resolution was shown?

Take a look at this: Follow above sequence but go to the Appearance Tab>Effects, deselect the Large Icon box if checked. What program did you install or run directly before it happened.  Sometimes, something, LIKE exiting the program through task manager or alt-F4, will cause screen resolution to remain changed even after you EXIT a program.  While this probably won't work, sometimes entering the program and exiting it in the correct way will reset the resolution.  Also, when I installed updated drivers for my vid card, it caused my computer to run in low color and resolution settings until I installed the drivers again, which fixed it.  So just tell us what programs(s) could have caused it.No such luck drmsucks. It was already on normal.

Typhoeus, my son downloaded something and he is not sure what he did. We just moved and his computer isn't hooked up so he was using mine. Yikes!!

Thankyou so much for all of your help on this!

Solve : Registry Cleaners and Glary Utilities --?

Answer»

Advanced Windows Care is good.  Before using any program that does anything with your registry: backup your files, create a system restore, and read many REVIEWS of the software.I recommend using Erunt to BACK up the registry as well as System Restore.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.htmlGood call.  Have you tried the author's other program?  http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ntregopt.html Quote

YOU NEED HAVE NO FEAR OF THEM.
The statement that registry cleaners do not improve computer performance is incorrect.
The first statement is simply dangerous. An average user has no business in using registry cleaners.
In 99% cases, using registry cleaner will NOT visibly improve computer performance.
The only cases where registry is needed, are those of botched uninstalls, or computer infection.I agree with this wholeheartedly...I don't know how to reply to this without re-quoting 50% of what I wrote in my first message.

The registry operates according to rules of strict logic.  And so do registry cleaners.  The software writers have come to the astonishing conclusion that if the registry says *.dll can be run by INITIALISING *.dll, and no such file exists in any directory, then the registry entry is probably useless (gasp!).  Or if it says the song "I love you baby" is track 3 on the cd in the cd player, and the cd player is empty, then that entry can be safely deleted too (shock! horror!).

Seriously though, where problems are identified as the result of registry cleaning, most fall into two categories.

(1) Bugs in the registry cleaning program.  All software has bugs, at least in the development stages.  Refer to my original COMMENTS re use of well-tested, name-brand products.  I don't want to quote it all again.

(2) Incompetently-written applications (other than cleaners) generating registry entries of questionable legitimacy.  For obvious reasons, these are often freeware or shareware.  A professional-grade registry cleaner, having been developed to much higher standards, correctly identifies these values as toxic and deletes them, possibly causing the GUILTY program to fail.

Whatever, the golden rule of backing up is this:  ALWAYS do it, and do it often, while things are running well.  NEVER do it when things are going wrong (that's why backing up according to a fixed schedule is usually not the best option - but that's a whole different story!).   Every registry cleaner I know offers this option on a plate.Alan

Try removing the CMOS battery (on the motherboard) for about 20 minutes and then put it back in.
If that doesn't work, unplug all accessories except the keyboard and MOUSE, go into the computer again and unplug everything but replug it as soon as you unplug it.
(For example, unplug hard drive, then re-plug it. Unplug Video Card and then replug it)
Then try to boot computer.

Can any one could inform/tell me out How could I create/make my own DLLs and ActiveX files or .OCX FILE? How to link up with the projects and all possible infos.I'll be thankfull to you all. What tools are you using?

VB, C++, and C# all support these components. For a DLL, create and build a CLASS Library project. For an ActiveX control, create and build a Windows Control Library project.

Visual Studio ($$$), the Studio Express Editions (free) and SharpDevelop (free) should all allow you to create your components.

 Hi pixma31,

I can't help wondering what project you have in mind, because to build a successful DLL or ActiveX file, you need to have quite a lot of PROGRAMMING knowledge - and if you have quite a lot of programming knowledge, you wouldn't normally be writing to a forum like this to ask how it's done.  What did you have in mind? Solve : CREATING A RECOVERY POINT?

Answer»

i've got a hp notebook running xp.  it's about 5 yrs old, but a couple TIMES a year, i save my stuff, STICK in my xp cd, delete everything, and reinstall xp and all my programs.  this has worked out GREAT.  my computer keeps clean and running very well.  but i'm tired of doing the extensive PROCESS.  it's; install xp.  update to sp1.  update to sp2.  update to sp3.  update everything else!  install office and my other programs.  tweak everything the way i want it.  this is very time consuming.
is there a way, to get my computer set up just the way i want it, then make a mirror IMAGE (like on my external usb hd) of the drive.  then, next time i want to do a clean sweep, just install some other "xp boot disk" and wah lah!  back to where i want to be without all the frustration of doing it step by step.  also, idealy, i'd love to be able to do it all from my usb hd.  boot from it, install xp from it, and have it install itself back to it's "safe clean slate" point.  any ideas? You used to be able to use Symantec Ghost but I don't think it any longer supports USB drives (I may be wrong)

My advice is use AcronisGhost does support USB drives so your info is innaccurate...
However as advised i would choose Acronis over Ghost anyday...i have both.
For safety purposes you're better off burning the images to CD/DVD instead of STORING them on an external drive...after all ALL HDD's fail sooner or later.

Solve : Computer is dialing up on its own?

Answer»

I am new here and I just deleted my post.

My computer is dialing up to the internet on its own.  I just put a new hard-drive in and a new dial-up modem.  It dials up say in the morning after I started the computer.

I have to shut it off every night.  I can't put in on stand-by, because the moden when I go to control panel click on PHONE and modems the modem is not present.

I leave the computer on all day and then when I am not on-line for a while, the computer just dials-up.

I like to have the dial-up set so I didn't have to put the password in every-time.  But now I can't do that because the computer dials-up and goes on-line.

So I have it set so I have to put the password in and the computer still dials-up, but now it can't connect.  It tries THREE times every 60 seconds, and then it just SITS there and waits until I either cancel it or press re-dial.

And I tried this "Never dial a connection" It doesn't do any good. Is automatic update turned on ? ?
Or is your email prograam set to check for new mail...
These would be the first 2 PLACES to check. The automatic update is turned on. And the e-mail automatically checks for up-dates when I log on.Both of them then are trying to connect without you telling them to...
That's what they do.
If it's a problem they can both be dis-abled with no harm to your system...

Solve : Windows is Crashing (safe mode too) xp home?

Answer»

First off:

Pentium 4, 2.4 ghz processor, 800 fsb.
1 gig of ram (2 512 sticks, corsair)
2 200 gb hard drives, maxtor
windows xp, home, sp2, (i'll explain UPDATES in a sec), real key, real disk

Alright, I had not used my computer for about three weeks, and I just hooked it up last night.  I just got internet at my new place, and so my computer was hooked up to the net for less than 3 hours.

I was sitting at the computer and had just started a video on megavideo and the computer reset.  It went straight to bios.
After that the computer would boot like normal, but the instant the splash SCREEN appears for windows the computer resets to bios again.

I tried to start in safemode. It would load all the way until the end (agp400, or w/e the file is) and then it would reset.  It was asking at the end of safemode load if i wanted to hit esc to cancel sptd.sys from loading, but I looked that up and it says that is a daemon-tools file and safe.

I know the computer was downloading updates, but I never saw a window appear to reset the computer, etc, and I don't know if any download actually occured.  Now the computer will not start in safe mode, normal mode, or with last working settings.  It's not even resetting anymore, it's just freezing at a black screen.

I know my system stats are vague, but I built the computer from scratch (a friend helped me) and that was about 5 year ago.  I don't remember what most of the stuff is any more.

Any help would be appreciated. update:

I was looking around and I think I FOUND some illuminating information.  Apparently the Daemon-Tool file is/was the problem.  I remember now that after turning the computer on YESTERDAY I did some cleanup and un-installed a few things.  Daemon was one of them.  I recall having an ERROR while it was uninstalling but it removed it from my list of programs (control panel and start menu) and the program folder was gone.

The other website suggested I go to the sys32 folder and delete the sptd.sys file, as it was interfering with start up.  I was able to get into safe-mode, normal, by hitting enter at the point where it asked to load the sptd.sys file.  I got in, deleted the file (actually, I moved it to my desktop incase i needed it or needed to restore it).  The computer crashed and reset.  Now I can't get safemode to work at all.

I would try moving the file from my desktop back to the sys32 folder, but I can't get to dos because safemode cmd prompt isn't working...

If anyone can think of a way for me to get to dos, it would help (I don't have a floppy drive).  Knoppix maybe?Hi sadpcpanda,

yes you can use Knoppix to delete this file. But usual the NTFS file system is mounted read only in linux. AFAIR from an older Knoppix live cd you can right click on the harddisk icon on the desktop and untick the "read only" option.

I hope that your hardware is not damaged.

Solve : Logging in to a secure website?

Answer»

Hello,

I am pretty computer illiterate.  In fact it was a pain in the a$$ getting this profile SET up.

Ok, here is my problem.  I work for a large bank and we are able to log to our secure website so that we may work from home.  I am going to describe this like a FIVE year old so please don't MAKE fun of me  .

We basically do a remote log in to get to the secure website's home page.  Then to access our loan processing software we hit a link where another window pops up that requires us to hit another link were another log in box pops up for us to sign in.  And there you go.

My problem is that when I get to the window that pops up requiring me to click a link where the log in box pops up nothing happens.

I called our internal tech support department and they won't help (i.e. connect in to my computer and "take over" to fix it)  me because I was not working on my bank issued laptop (I was working from my pc at home).  The tech suggested that I make sure there is no pop up BLOCKER enabled.  There isn't.  So, now I am stuck.  This lack of access happened within the last WEEK because I was able to log in before.

Any help would be appreciated. How to get into a bank's system on a non-supported PC. You could be sincere, like all the harrassed moms whose kids/cat/dog/ reset their password, with a beautifully convincing backstory. You may not. We have no way of knowing.  This is far too "iffy" (as we say in England) for you to get any help on here, even if any were possible. If the bank's IT dept will only help you if you use the work-supplied laptop, then use it. Surely you can see why it is not in anybody's interests to dilute a bank's properly setup security procedures and practices. As a responsible bank employee (if that is what you are) you should realise this, which is why I am sceptical. if I am wrong, please forgive me. But still, no help I think.

I suppose I am wording my question wrong.  I will be more general in my question.  Why is nothing happening when I hit the link that allows the log in box to pop up onto my screen?  I checked to see if the pop up blocker was enabled and it is not.  Is there something else that may be causing this?  Something that I may have overlooked?

As for my company issued laptop.  It is currently being repaired, otherwise me having this issue and posting it here would be moot.  You have not said what browser you are using. Try a different one.

Solve : Exception code e06d7363?

Answer»

I installed update service pack 3 . After the install I went to use a software program. When it tried to open I got this error message and it won't open.
The program is a Digitizer pro that uses a dongle.

Exception code e06d7363
Exception flags: 1
Exception address: 7c81eb33
Number parameters: 3
Start up address - 004011A0
offset of exp 7c41d993

I took the program out and reinstalled it but get the same error message.
I can't find any thing on this.
I also restored my computer back to the day before to get rid of the update. Still didn't work..
Help!!
Joe

SP3 might have messed something up.
Try XP repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmIt might be that SP3 has retrospectively edited the restore points.  I don't know for sure that SP3 can do that, but if you have rolled back to an earlier restore point, and you are still getting the message, it's difficult offhand to see what else might cause it.  If this is what's happened, the damage has been done, and you may have little option but to re-instal a clean version of XP SP2.

The message is a "first chance" error message.  Windows is saying that if you know the C++ language, and you are running a SUITABLE debugger, it will give you the first chance to deal with the error;  if not, it will deal with it in its own way.  The codes tell you where the error is, and ROUGHLY what type of error it is, but provide no information as to what specifically caused it.  The basic assumption is that the error is being caused by a program which you have written yourself and have not yet fully debugged.

If you ROLL back to SP2, and then run a registry cleaner to try and get rid of any lingering traces of SP3 in the registry, that might do some good.  Anything is worth a try.

Solve : RE BOOT XP?

Answer»

After antivirus complete crash of PC, is it possible to reinstall or reboot XP Home edition from an XP upgrade disc? ( it states on xi box that it will only install if a licensed user of 98, 98 2nd ed or millennium edition, saying nothing about an already installed XP OS)
posts suggest that it is possible to do just this, but does not specify if it is only possible with FULL version or if it is possible with upgrade disc also.

I would LIKE to put a few geek squad members in their place when they are so certain that it is not possible to repair xp with the upgrade disc, I think it is possible, The cost of the XP upgrade software lays in the BALANCE. I will not open it until I receive confirmation from one of you hope professors

I have never tried to fix XP with a upgrade CD but I loaded XP on a blank machine with the upgrade CD. You just have to have a copy of 98 handy. About half way though the install it will ask you for the CD and than tell you to put the upgrade XP disk back into the machine.

Solve : My computer problem?

Answer»

What about the fan? How did that work out?the computer becomes off not only when i use the net but also when i am not using the net .
as Broni said i will open and check soon
I am surprised that :-
1. This computer is still being used on the internet until it closes down;
2. This computer is still being used offline until it closes down;
3. That its poor little memory cells have not permanently fused so you don't even GET a BSOD.

When the computer was working it achieved 64 degrees centigrade which was only 9 degree below the maximum rating of 73.
It gets so much hotter than 64 that it shuts down - probably after greatly exceeding 73.
Semiconductor LEAKAGE increases exponentially with temperature, which increases power consumption that further increase temperature etc. - known as thermal runaway.
Electronic equipment may have a life expectancy of 5 years if you are lucky,
but the failure rate doubles for every 8 to 10 degrees C, so if it is 50 degrees hotter than it should be it is degraded by 32 to 64 - lets say 50, so I guess it might live another month !!!

If you want to further postpone dealing with what may kill your computer, how about following my advice and giving feedback upon what the CPU is busy doing.  The closest you came is an image at
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=1zx8wn5&s=4
This suggests a gross malfunction, or you misunderstood my advice.

The picture I have attached shows my system state whilst anti-virus scanning.
You can clearly see that at the top NOD32 is taking 96% of the CPU,
and System Idle Process is at the bottom with 0%
You can also see my cursor at the time of the snap shot.
The cursor is designating exactly where you need to click in order that the largest CPU burden will appear on the top row - your tinypic.com image shows the highest scorer was only the second one down.

Alan

Solve : computer will not boot just restarts?

Answer»

Hi, My question is...... My step daughters computer i removed it from her house to try and fix it for her.......WELL when i start the boot process it goes along fine, then it gets up to Windows XP screen and then goes dirtectly back to restarting the boot.... It will do this for hours........ i want to just reformat the hard drive or just buy another if it is worth it (since it isnt at my house) i didnt think you could format in dos on xp because it is not a dos based SYSTEM..... so how do i do it? i have no disk drive.... and i placed my XP disk in the rom and it didnt help......
what do i do now ? What brand of computer is it? Have you tried to boot into "SAFE Mode"? If not, while it is booting repeatedly push the "F8" key. If you're able to get to the Advanced Start Up options, First try the "Last Good Configuration". If that doesn't work and you can get back to Advanced Start Up, try to start in "Safe Mode", then use the "System Restore" utility. If the Last Good Configuration doesn't work but you can boot into Safe Mode, disable Automatic Restart on errors. Post the error message on the next failed boot.

Control Panel>System>Advanced Tab>Startup and Recovery>Settings> deselect Auto Restart. If this is the case of a stop error, wouldn't that give him the BSOD? I'm not that experienced with this type of thing. I'm pretty experienced with stop errors, but I have no clue if this is one or something worse. Quote from: Sky Ninja on August 31, 2008, 12:40:47 AM

With the system set to restart on errors, the system won't display a BSOD, or, any other error,  because it restarts before it can display. Hopefully, the OP can disable this feature and display an error message.i have tried safe mode and Windows XP recover as it boots up and all the boot up choices that were givin including the last good configuration.... but when it STARTS to load windows ..... then it turns off and does a restart and never makes it in to windows ..... and by the way it is a compaq presario sr1215cl..... which my be my problem ...hahaha If you just want to re-install Windows, download and run: http://www.dban.org/. This will completely wipe the hard drive *YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA*. Then, boot to your Windows CD, partition, format and re-install Windows.

If you want to try to resolve the problem without clearing the hard drive, post back.

Best of luck.I dont care about losing and information on this computer..... but how do i load a PROGRAM in this computer when windows will not boot up...... it starts booting up and then goes down and reboots and goes down over and over and over for hours till i just turn it off....  what do i need to do to get in to the computer to do these things that everyone is telling me to do??? When you tried to boot from the Windows CD, what happened? Did you have the CD set as the first boot device? Is this a Microsoft CD or a Recovery Disk from Compaq?

To enter the BIOS to change the boot order, turn on the computer and press F1 while computer is starting. (If this model is from 2001, try F10.) Look for a section in the BIOS called Boot Order or Boot Sequence or similar. Make the CD drive the first boot device. Exit and "save changes."

Please answer the questions and let us know if you were successful CHANGING the boot order. The CD that you have will determine the next step.i have already tryied that, and it starts up trying and the loading XP screen comes up then it goes off and restarts again over and over and over again..... i just want to get in the DOS and format the C: thats the point that i am at now.. like you could in the old daysTake your pick: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htmcan i download that to a cd because this computer does not have a disk drive
Do all the fans start  when you boot up, this could be a power problem??So you've decided to reinstall you operating system to get that freshie feeling of security that only a fresh installation can give you.  If you have determined that system to be FUBAR and are comfortable with the idea of losing data on those hard drives you'll be happy to learn that you will be able to format both those hard drives during the Operating System Installation process.  Just insert a boot from your Windows Installation disk, (have your key handy) and follow the on screen prompts.  You will need to delete the partitions that are there on each drive, then create a partition on each of the two drive, then format the first one to be the C drive (choosing full takes more time but more throughly formats the disks) and format the second disk at a later time with disk manager.  But you system will be completely fresh.  Install all available windows updates, then head over to [link removed - Zylstra] for a complete anti-malware defense suite for your pc and or entire home workgoup.  Good luck with the freshie OS!

The moment I download and install the SP2, the COMPUTER attempt to restart for updates to take effect and goes only to the original screen of "Microsoft XP Pro" and then completely shuts down and reboots repeating the cycle indefinitely.
Tried to reinstall the win XP a few times, still the same effect
Any ideas?

Solve : anything graphical makes XP64 crash?

Answer»

I just replaced replaced my video card for one with more memory, after the last one fried I guess.
XP boots like normal, but if I open a video file, iTunes, Geometry Wars, PHOTOSHOP etc. ,
then I get a FLASH of a BLUE screen and XP crashes and reboots.
Windows Explorer and other programs work, seems like it's the computationally intensive ones that crash
WMP works but not for video.

I also just replaced the power supply with a much larger one, so I doubt it's that.
It's really annoying and I have no idea what to do.
Improperly installed video card?
XP64?

Specs:
Video Card:    EVGA GeForce 8500 GT 512MB
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-8I945P
CPU                 Intel P4  1.6GHz
                         2GB RAM
PSU                Antec 500W

First you should MAKE sure that you system is really 64bit XP

I think the problem is you video card driver did not instatlled right,or you old driver did not remove wholly.
So , I suggest you to remove all of your old driver of you old video card ,and then reinstall the new one.

Solve : Virus Alert Clock?

Answer»

My problem is very similar to topic "Virus Alert Clock, No C: or D:, selective internet activity, no control panel."  I have followed the instructions in the post and I have created a LOG file from "ComboFix" and "HijackThis".  I have included the logs from ComboFix and Hijackthis.  I am currently at the point where you have SUPPLIED a unique file (KillAll:).  In the post you say do not use the code supplied, so I was hoping you can send me a file that I could use on my computer.

[recovering DISK space -- attachment deleted by admin]I'm moving this to the Computer Virus and SPYWARE section.

Also, I suggest posting a SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Logs.

Solve : Computer not running properly after installing Norton 360?

Answer» OK. Let's put it this way. AVG 8.0 works fine on some computers, but doesn't work on some others.
Since it doesn't work WELL on at least 99% of all computers, I GOT RID of it from all of my installations, and I don't recommend it anymore.
I can't recommend any product, which MAY NOT work OK. Quote from: Broni on September 02, 2008, 04:32:59 PM

Ok then. I'll take this into consideration in the FUTURE

Avast and Avira it is!Fair enough.I'm sure we can all agree that AVG 8 is still better then Norton...AVG seems to be headed that way...
Still AVG seems to be giving pretty good protection, while Norton's is next to none.

Solve : Windows Explorer Crashing Incessently?

Answer»

Well, here I was the other day in VLC media polayer converting a file, when it crashed. Meh, it wasn't important anyway. So, I continue my internet surfing, and away I go. The Windows Explore crashes and RESTARTS. And again. And again. In the end, I have to hit Control+Alt+Delete to hit the shut down switch on the Security OPTIONS screen. I log on again, still happening. Another restart, still going. It only affects one user account, which is no big deal,  but I cannot get my emails out of it (Outlook claims that my old PST file is locked by another process).

I have VISTA Premium with SP1 and all updates (except three optional driver updates with love from Microsoft), A Gigabyte motherboard, Core 2 Duo E4400, 1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, and Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 (also up-to-date).

Thanks very much for your help!Try creating new profile: http://vistasupport.mvps.org/create_new_user_profile.htm
BTW...I suggest, you get more RAM for both boxes: Vista likes 2GB, and XP likes 512MB, or more.I created a new user account, I'm using it now. The RAM for US isn't an isue for us at the moment, (it runs fine, and the XP box will be decomissioned into a XAMPP server some time next year and about eight years old), but it's something we're planning on doing. How is the new user account then? It's fine. That's the thing I don't understand: it shouldn't be doing that in one account (on the upside, I've not killed the computer)Profiles get corrupt.I got the emails out, too. I must've been trying to import my new outlook profile into outlook. Oops.Just as an aside, in my new user account, I was trying to play back an FLV file in WMP11 (we have a codec pack installed which causes all sorts of problems for me), and Windows EXPLORER crashed. Can codecs cause Explorer to crash? Quote from: DouglasC on September 03, 2008, 02:57:26 AM

Can codecs cause Explorer to crash?

It is possible....

Error Messages?Just had a look at Problem Reports and Solutions, apparently the error was caused in OGM.DLL, which is associated with the Codec pack (I thought it was this *censored* thing - it causes problems with Movie Maker, as well). Remove it? (It's not really needed, VLC can take it's place).Rename it to OGM.old.
Renaming is always safer option.

Solve : Another XP boot issue?

Answer»

I have had some problems with XP booting. When I try to boot into XP it stops at the loading screen where my monitor shows “no signal” and goes from green to brown light. My HDD light blinks every five seconds, just like a lighthouse after that.

I have tried to have my monitor plugged into different DVI ports but that didn't work.

Check disk has found no problems and when in safe mode it will some times freeze and/or the monitor turn off, like it was booting normally.

I have Ubuntu installed in a different partition, which is what I am writing this in, and it has worked wonderfully.

I would like to fix this issue without reinstalling or formating if possible.

Before this boot issue happened I was in XP and it started to freeze up/monitor turn off like above. I thought it was a overheating issue as it is ~85 degrees F  here but my GPU has never gone over 40 degrees C and my GPUs over 65 C. I not have my case cover off with a fan BLOWING inside but so far nothing.

My PC specs:
EVGA 780i SLI mobo
Core 2 Duo E6600 3.2 GHz
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640 MB x2 SLI
3 GB of OCZ SLI-ready RAM
500 GB Hitachi HHD (boot) and 1TB Hitachi (storage/backup)
Windows XP Pro SP3 -can't boot, has problems
Ubuntu 8.04 64bit -works good, no problems

Can you get into Windows via Safe Mode?

Yes, for a little bit, longer if in command prompt mode.So no matter how you boot into Windows, the screen still 'loses signal' but not in Ubuntu?

I think I would try removing the CMOS BATTERY for about 10-20 minutes and then reinserting it.
Then try again and post back. Here's an idea you may not have though of.  After booting into safe mode, can you change the display properties to a lower resolution?   I am thinking that you resolution may be set to high and is incompatible with you monitor.  Maybe even the monitor frequency, buy make sure that you hide modes your monitor cannot display when fiddling with this.  Good luck, hope this helps! It really caused more harm than good. Now I have two gigs of RAM instead of three because my BIOS would not boot with three. It helped for a while, I was able to log in but not for long. I have done chkdsk /f and /r and nothing.

Nope, didn't work. It can't be refresh rate because I'm USING DVI so I can't change my rate.

What did you do? What happened?

It seemed to have started when I removed the CMOS battery. I still couldn't boot into XP and after a while Ubunto. I tried the Ubunto Live CD and it would not load either so I removed one of my sticks. That worked then I ran Memtest with one stick in each slot and it passed all the tests. when I tried to ADD more sticks my motherboards Post LCD showed C1 and had a long steady beep. C1 means memory presence/base memory detect. I have contacted my motherboard's manufacture dor tech suport. All right. Glad you know the problem. Now you just need some RAM.  Looks that way. I'm just glad I can do the things I need to do. Thanks everyone.

Solve : Disapearing Article?

Answer»

I TYPED in a very long article in a forum and touched the wrong thing on the key board and "ZAP" it was gone. Is there a way to retrieve it? I was so upset, I ate ice cream right out of the carton last night)
Thanks for any help you can give. I appreciate your answers

Chances are you did what I have done a few times - go to use shift for a cap letter but hit ctrl and that letter!!!  Annoying huh!

Sometimes a back button hit will get you back to your reply box and the text - if not tho I suggest two options.

1) - after a chunk of text - select and place it on clipboard.  repeat that process until the end - then even if submit fails you have your text.

2) - Even safer - keep notepad or your fave text editor HANDY and write in that then copy and paste - fill in for smilies if needed as last stage.

This approach will cut down on your ice cream consumption!!  If you use Firefox, this add-on will save you in the FUTURE: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1046press the Backspace button (only works if you have CHANGED web pages by misstake). if the web BROWSER is closed it wont work sorry.

Solve : RDP and USB Device?

Answer»

I am TRYING to route a USB device through an RDP (remote desktop) connection but am having issues with this.  The device is a Phillips SpeechMike Pro.  It is an audio (microphone/speak) device with an optical ball mouse.  When It connects to the new device the ball mouse doesn't work but the buttons for the audio does.  Any thoughts?  I am ALSO connecting from an XP Pro SP2 device to a VMWARE virtual device that is also XP Pro with SP2.  Any help or thoughts WOULD be great.

Thanks,

PS = Here is a link to the product I am having troubles with.  http://www.dictation.philips.com/index.php?id=1425Wait a sec, so you are trying to use this device on another remote computer? That is correct. Not sure if this is possible. Have you done it before?

If so, I would try to make sure it's properly installed on the remote computer.Unfortunately I have not done ANYTHING like this before.  I have done it with regular USB key storage but never a device that has multiple peaces to it such as this.  I can get the audio to work but not the mouse portion of this device. It look likes a fairly complex device to use over the internet.

Just to be sure, does it even work on the other computer? (not remotely)it does work on the local device. What about on the other computer (not through remote connection, normally)Well I am connecting to a VMware Virtual device so I am not sure how I can even test it locally on that device.  The drivers are installed on it and it is prepared for it.Wait, does this even work on your own computer? It does work on the local hardware device.

Sorry for the delayed response. No problem.

What I want to know though if you can run it locally on the MACHINE you are connected to.
This way we can discount the possibility of the problem being Remote Connection.

Solve : Wipe Out!!?

Answer»

Today I installed XP SP3. After installing it asked me to reboot which I did. The computer would not reboot except in safe mode. I tried several times to GET it to reboot normally, but it wouldn't. I tried one more time and hit the F10 key while rebooting to get assistance from Compaq. It asked me to do a restore and I did. Whoops! It did restore, however it came back just like a new computer with nothing on it except the basics. Upon investigation, some PROGRAMS I had downloaded were still there, but many lost. The worst thing was I lost all my items and downloads in MY Documents, all my favorites,  as well as the other person's who also uses this computer. Is there a WAY to recover those items as there are some very important items in those files.  Probably not, except for high priced recovery services. When you hit F10, you accessed Compaq's recovery partition. By continuing your action, you returned your computer to its original state. All data lost.
Little hope, but try this: http://www.recuva.com/
Warning! It'll take a while to run it.Oh, and think about developing a backup ROUTINE!!!!!!!The only thing I could think of is to use a recovery program (which might not recover every thing or anything for that matter). but is worth a try. just search google for some free recovery tool's but watch out some of them ar only free TRIALS which let u recover someany then stop working till you buy the full copy.

but try the one that was said in a previous post ^^^^.

and good luck

Solve : Windows XP Idle Computer Issue?

Think you could direct me to which ones I need to download?

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LATITUDE%20D820&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
Assuming that these drivers are for your laptop (service tag), then I would download the chipset driver and the video driver - note that there are two video drivers, only download the one that matches the video on your computer.

Then go into Device Manager and look for ERRORS - down load those drivers.

If you have questions, post back. When at Dell's site simply enter your service tag # and it will list your correct drivers...

Also what ver. of FireFox ? ?
Older versions had a memory leak issue and it could very WELL be the culprit.
Update to the latest ver.I set it so hard disks won't shut off - I'll post and say if that works.

Also, I'm currently using the newest version of Firefox - so that shouldn't be an issue.I have one more questions, regarding this:
Quote
Everytime I leave my laptop idle for approximately one hour or more
Do you have any programs running, when you leave your computer? If so, usually, what programs.

Concerning, FF memory leaks, FF3 is better, but still not perfect.
On a top of it, some add-ons may cause memory leaks.
Check this list: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions, and see, if you have any add-ons listed as possible cause of memory leaks, installed.Usually the only programs are ..

Firefox & AIM.

And no luck on the extensions thing.Have you done this?

it just MEANS that your hard disks won't go into standby mode they will always be on. I have mine set up that way and I haven't had a problem and it won't hurt the drive either

Solve : PC 'bluescreens' if playing MPG or using Media Player - shuts off computer?

Answer»

Hi all

When I play any video file in Windows Media Player, I get an instant bluescreen and the pc shuts off and restarts...

Using XP Pro, 2 gig of memory, the vid card is a Nvidia 8500GT GeForce

I have tried to update drivers for the vid card but it tells me I have the best drivers already. The thing was working fine one day, then doing this the next.

In Device Manager, I have two devives with YELLOW !! next to them, I believe they are unrelated to this, they are the 'Other PCI Bridge Device' and "SM Bus Controller"

What are they? I thought they are USB components? I have also tried installing drivers for these without success...

thanks... What is the error message on the blue screen? You don't need all the text because it is ALWAYS the same, only the numbers that look like 0x00000000.See, if VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ will work. Quote from: Soviet Genius on September 01, 2008, 05:19:15 PM

Hi

I can't read it... it bluescreens for half a second, then shuts down... I'm about to try VLC.How is VLC fairing? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 02, 2008, 09:21:20 AM
How is VLC fairing?

No good... the same problem exactly.

Thing is, if I open a vid, and quickly stop it, I can then play it through, yet if I open a vid and let it run, it crashes... VLC or WMP.

Happens with AVI, MPG, WMV files...  very wierd. The Nvidia 8500GT vid card is only 6 months old and ran fine since installation... might need an upgrade anyway.

I would first try to reinstall the drivers for the Video Card.

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-usChad, may I suggest you have a look at your video codecs and directx settings?  Since you are a movie buff, I am guessing you may have installed a low quality video decoder codec into your system.  If you are thinking of an upgraded computer, I would WARN you to exercise caution when installing certain free decoder packages available freely today.  I'd be interested in hearing what codec packs other users of this forum have installed.  Just for you consideration....

-Good luck with this one.

Get SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php, and post your computer temps, while idle, and while you ATTEMPT to play any video.
