KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck.  Usually the EXCEPTION address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem.  Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003.  This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG.  This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG.  This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled

is the firmware on your bios up to date? if not, then update it.

also dust the inside to reduce heating of internal parts.Do I really need to update my bios?  For one thing that has been happening for a few months (~last september, although it has increased in frequency in the past month).  Also, I just cleaned out my case a few weeks ago so I don't think it's a build up of dust...FLUSHING BIOS is seldomly necessary. I wouldn't even think about it.

Your log shows win32k.sys several times as being at fault.
Possible numerous causes: bad RAM, bad driver, corrupt system file itself.
I'd start with couple of things...
Are there any errors in Device Manager?
Unistalling/reinstalling video driver may be worth trying.

Also, go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Have Windows XP CD handy.

Solve : XP HOME ED STARTUP DISKS?

Answer»

Hi All, looking for a little help on trying to sort out a mate's PC:

OK, I make the 6 floppy disks, LABEL them in order,
Change the boot order in the BIOS to boot from floppy
It does so...
Comes up with the "set up is now detecting hardware etc..."
Then just before it shuts down and loops the whole process again it flashes a failure but it's not on the screen long enough to read it!

I've tried booting from the XP CD too but with no success as seem to get a keyboard and mouse lock up when it LOADS into the OS.
Keyboard works FINE when in DOS and when prompting BIOS options though?
They are both USB devices.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Flinch.Welcome to the CH forums.

I SUSPECT a hardware failure or imminent failure.  Re-seat ram, check all connections.   Run Memtest86 and the hdd manufacturer's diagnostic program available from the manufacturer's site.

Good luck.

Solve : Windows Media Center Problem?

Answer»

I have a corrupt hp windows media center computer and I have their RECOVERY cd's. I want to do a REPAIR installation like what xp pro can do, but it only allows me to erase the WHOLE hard DRIVE and I don't want to do that. Is there a way of doing just a repair installation and still keep your data on there? I was wondering if it was because they are HP's recovery cd's and not the REGULAR cd's you get from Microsoft could be the problem?    Quote

Best thing that could happen to a mac! i AGREE completely. so i just put sp3 on my WINDOWS 98. That should run WELL don't you think? If you've got 98SE, you only need SP1. Quote from: drmsucks on July 02, 2008, 06:26:28 PM
If you've got 98SE, you only need SP1.
but if you'll need to install Office 4.0 from 720K floppy discs if you want to use Luna themes, and you'll need the windows 3.1 setup floppy to use Aero.   Darn...I forgot about Aero. Ok, i've got it... I've put SP3 on a ZX Spectrum. It works AWESOMELY. Infact, i'm on this site right now with it. But it did take a long time to convert to BASIC! Sounds like this is solved, then This Thread has SPUN WAY out of control...

If the 'code' is for Win2k, you cannot use it to install XP.

The 'code' ought to work with a copy of Win2k, however. Please, anyone, CORRECT me if this is incorrect. Quote

I've ran into situations where this isnt the case.  Seems like some CD's only work with a range of keys, not all.

you can call microsoft with your info, and they can verify, or straigten out confusion.the only types of CDs that accept different Keys are the OEM (IE, full install) and Upgrade installations. In general their keys are not interchangable. Otherwise, all keys will work WITHIN the same "domain" of keys, such as a OEM install key working for any OEM cd.

However, in any case, the key will have to be for the same OS.ok no oem disk/cd guess i'm screwed unless i'm gonna buy a new os. thanksUbuntu.

Solve : Windows XP error messages?

Answer»

Hi, I have obtained a second COMPUTER with Windows XP.  Initially it worked great, I added a couple of programmes and it has slowed down and throws up error messages:

eg.  "Winlogon.exe - Application Error.  The instruction at "oxo106b5a4" referenced memory at "oxo106b5a4" The memory could not be written."  I ALSO get similar messages for Iexplore.exe.

Thinking it may be PROGRAMME confliction I have tried system restore but it will not run.  Have also tried tried Add/uninstall but the programmes will not populate.

Any advice would be APPRECIATED - I am not an advanced user.

Thanks

Solve : Booting Problem from WinXP CD?

Answer»

Recently, I boot the system from windows xp CD to reinstall the OS.

During the process, System displays "Press any key to boot from CD..."

After pressing a key, system screen displays "Setup is inspecting your COMPUTER hardware configuration..." (in Text format with no background color)

Thereafter normally screen displays Blue Screen with text that continue the setup.

But in my system, No blue screen is displayed. And system screens goes to blank and not responding.

There is no problem with XP INSTALLATION CD. That CD boots fine in other computers.

If anyone known the problem or solutions PLEASE reply. Are you using an add on video card in that machine or the onboard video ? ?Intel Chipset 845G On-board video card.Could it be a failing CD drive?  Maybe try swapping it out with a known good device. Also try swapping another monitor on that machine to rule it out as the culprit.
Is this an official Windows CD with fancy holograms all over it or something else ? ?That is Official Windows XP CD. Quote from: CBSk on May 20, 2008, 07:04:23 AM

That is Official Windows XP CD.

OK...but there were a few other questions/options here...Sylvia is on Holiday this month.OK!!!!!!!In Past, I FORGET to say that is "Fedora Linux 8 is also installed on my system".

By the help of some tests, I FOUND the final solution.

That problem occurred due to Fedora Linux 8. I don't know that is a feature or bug of Fedora Linux. Because when I delete the Linux Partitions completely, the Windows XP boots as fine from CD.

Earlier, I change my system monitor and also I delete Windows Partition(OS) completely but it does not help to me.

Note: This Solution is worked for me. And it was posted for other users.   This is why providing as much info as possible on a troubled machine is always your best bet....

Solve : SYSTEM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE 2ND HD?

Answer»

I am not sure if this is a DOS problem,Windows or Hardware
I just installed a new C drive. I have two HD 1 160g  (slave "D") and a new 200G primary(C) which I just installed.
after Installing the new drive DOS/Windows no longer recognizes the SECONDARY. It (DOS and Windows) both show only C drive. when I go to Bios or run any utility it shows both drives as drive 1 and 2. but when I load FDISK it says d drive is o and E is 1. these are my DVD\CD drives. but no SIGN of the other HD. ?   the system is:
Windows 98SE 4.10.2222a
INTEL DG845GVSR MB  with Intel Celeron  2g chip
 Custom-built machine two hd 1 MAXTOR 2O0G 1 MAXTOR 160G
Regularly run Adaware,Sbot S&D have AVG 7.5  anti virus
I have a Original WINDOWS 98SE CD Was the 160GB HD your former primary HD?  If so, did you change jumper settings on it to make it slave when you installed the new HD?  And, are jumpers on the new drive set for master or Cable Select?  Are both drives on the same data cable?  Some drives ship from the factory un-formatted....Windows will not recognise it until you format it.
Use the Utility CD that shipped with it to do this or DLoad and run the software from the drive manuf. website....

Solve : Adding entries to the Windows IME?

Answer»

When using Windows IME to INPUT Chinese characters, there are CERTAIN rare characters that are not AVAILABLE from the "dictionary" (is it what it is called?).
Is there any way we can create and add those characters into the "dictionary"?
When doing some text editing, I often run into the situation where I have to create the  characters using Photoshop then insert them as objects to the document.
But by doing so, when the document is printed out, those characters that are actually objects do not appear as natural as the neighboring characters although they are created using the same font.
Any idea? Or any other input SUGGESTION other than the IME?
Thanks.A similar situation is with the font sets.
Even some not-so-rare characters are not always available in all font sets.
How can we edit the font set to include those "missing" characters?
Thanks.
Anyone?

Solve : no matching beep pattern?

Answer»

Hello:

I did find a matching beep pattern on the beep page.

I do not know the BIOS (can not read it on any board chip).  It is either AIM, Phoenix or Award.  I did find a small square chip with "PH" on the top line.

When I push the on BUTTON, an endless beep is made at the same RAPID interval.  I counted 25 before I stopped.  I tried two more times with the same beep pattern.

When I push the on button, the power SUPPLY starts and power lights on the front of the panel DISPLAY.  Nothing displays on the monitor.

check the ram. remove and re-insert.Removing and reinstalling the ram has gotten me closer to starting the computer again.

Will make a new post for where the start up is now

Solve : problem with IE7?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out. I have run out of ideas here. The problem is with my internet EXPLORER 7, and it brings me to the start page (http://runounce.msn.com/runounce2.aspx).... i can go to different web pages but whenever i start IE 7... it brings me to that page instead of my home page (www.theage.com.au). I have cleaned up temporary internet files, cookies and history. I have also un-installed and re-installed it. None of these worked.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advanceopen IE
go to tools
go to options
set NEW homepageThank you for your reply, Samcarney

I have already set the homepage to a site (e.g. www.theage.com.au) and clicked OK. When opening it, it still GOES to http://runounce.msn.com/runounce2.aspx.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you in advancein that case...

If you open the registry editor by going to the start menu and then choosing run, then type in regedit, then you may be able to fix the problem as I did.

  • Fist, LOCATE the key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] .
  • Second, on the right side of the screen locate the subkey [RunOnceHasShown] .
  • Third, click on the subkey mentioned in step 2 and change the value from 0 to 1 .
  • FOURTH, close regedit and restart IE.

if it still doesnt work i have more advice, but try this for now.It works now.

This is what i did
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceHasShown is set to 1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceComplete is set to 1.

Thanks for your timegreat!
glad to be of assistance.

Solve : No Audio Output?

Answer»

Hello fellow COMPUTER users.  I HOPE you can help me.

I have a Dell computer, model DHP,  s/n 3GS4051.  It contains an Intel 82801AA AC'97  integrated audio controller.  The computer is running Windows XP.

I cannot get any sound out of this computer; no introductory music when Windows comes up, no operational beeps, etc., no audio from the CD player, zilch.

I have tested the speakers and they work.  They appear to be plugged into the right jack on the back of the computer (green plug into green jack).

I have also gone into Control Panel/Sounds and Audio DEVICES and checked the configuration (verified that the sound is not muted and the levels are properly SET) and followed the trouble shooting guide.  I have configured the audio controller with the Device Manager.  It identified the driver (which I did not write down) and it tells me that the sound card is in PCI Buss 0, Device 31, function 5 and that the controller is working properly.

I have tried everything that I know how to do.  I am wondering if there might be something in the system initialization process that might not be right.  Are there config files or something like that that might not be enabling the sound card?  Just a little more background:  the sound did work on this computer at one time.  When my daughter took it to a technician some time back he somehow disabled the sound.  This is why I am thinking that the problem might be in the configuration rather than a hardware or software failure.

I would appreciate any advice you could provide.  The computer is several years old now and I no longer have Dell support (whatever good that would do).  Thanks, Al go to support.dell.com

Solve : How do I reformat Windows NT Server??

Answer»

I have an OLD fileserver PC at work, and it has Windows NT Server installed on it. I have a valid copy of Windows NT Server 4.0 (newer version) that I'd like to install on that PC, but I have no clue on how to reformat Windows NT Server. Can anyone guide me on what to do? Thank you.

Also, if I MANAGE to get it to work - is there a free antivirus that works with Windows NT?

THANK YOU! - PS - quite urgent.Okay, so an old pc, that you want to run an old server os. Let me check my memory banks.....
If the OS is installed from floppy disks, pop in the first floppy and reboot the computer.
If the OS is installed from a CD, put the CD in and make sure the computer is set to boot from CD. (check BIOS)
Start the installation process and it should ASK you which HARD drive to use (and format) to install windows on.

Check AVG antivirus for a free antivirus. Not sure if it will work with NT, but it's worth a shot.

Solve : Not a password problem, but similar - is there a solution??

Answer»

Hello,

I am using an IBM Thinkpad laptop.  My problem is as follows: I turn the computer on and it starts to boot up.  I get to the Administrator dialogue box that asks for password.  I have never had a password and normally just hit Enter.  The next box comes up (as normal) that says "Preparing/APPLYING Preferences" and then suddenly it switches to "Closing Preferences" or something similar (I am currently at a Library computer so I don't exactly remember) and reverts back to the Administrator dialogue box for password.  I do not get an error dialogue box saying that "can't log you on or incorrect password" - it just goes through the aforementioned cycle.  I am really a dinosaur so am not sure what to do.  I tried booting in safe mode and diagnostics etc, but always get into that fatal cycle.  I don't thin it is a password problem as it seems to accept the "enter" command, but then loops back to the same dialogue box.  Any help would be appreciated.  If this is fatal, can the hard DRIVE be taken to an expert and data retrieved at resonable cost?
Thank youFirst of all, What Operating System?

Is there any error message? If so, we need that to help with your problem.

Also, can you try getting on in Safe Mode.

f this is fatal, can the hard drive be taken to an expert and data retrieved at resonable cost?
You could but you will have to be pretty rich to afford it...Operating system is Windows 2000.  There is no error message - as stated the administrator box seems to accept the "enter" (I never had a password) and then continues with "applying preferences" but then loops back to the administrator box.  By pressing F8 when computer is starting up, I can get to the page that gives choices of safe mode, revert to LAST known good configuration, etc. etc. - but each option I tried always brings me to the same problem.
Thank youHmmm....I don't suppose you have the Windows 2000 CD, do you?No - computer came pre-installed with Windows 2000 and did not come with a disk.  I can get to a different screen (IBM product retrieval) which seems to imply that I can reinitialize Windows2000, but at the expense of reformatting the harddrive - which I don't want to do until all other options have been exhausted.I'm not sure there is much we can do....or at least what I can do...

From what it sounds like, there is a problem with your version of Windows which is preventing it from booting up.

Anyone else have any advice?i had that same problem when my was not reading memory to boot up. if it was me,  i would,,,,,,, if you are suave disconnect maybe the battery for about 10min.
see what happends

by the way are you pressing the f4 or whatever BOOTS to safemode)key long enough,  to boot in save mode. keep your finger down longer sometimes you can get the bios to jump to save mode. if that makes sense.
by the way i meant your lithum battery not charger.Try to borrow a Windows 2000 cd from a friend. Then run a RECOVERY console..Thank you everybody.  I will have to see if any of my friends have the Windows2000 disk (at this point probably not - laugh).  I took the computer to the local repair store and they wanted $160 just to have a look. Ouch.  They suggested not doing it unless I wanted just to retrieve any data.

Thanks for all the help

Solve : IE cannot connect to the web page?

Answer»

On about the 12th or 13th of last month I suddenly couldn't open the IE web page.  I am connected to the net using Verizon wireless.  I had to take the computer to Staples where they downloaded Firefox so I could get on LINE and download IE.  After I downloaded IE7 it still wouldn't download the web page.  I have Spybot running and on occasion it will say that a registry file will be changed and I can either allow the change or deny it.  This MAY have happened right before IE became unusable.  The computer also shows several restore points, and attempts to restore to a chosen date, but then says it was not restored.  Need help. So, Staples installed Firefox on your computer, right?  Can you get online with Firefox?  Do you have IE 7 installed now?Yes, I am online with Firefox.  I downloaded a new IE 7 using Firefox, but it still will not connect to the web page. Do you have problems ACCESSING just ONE webpage/website with IE or all webpages/websites?

Delete your browser cache settings: from within IE: Tools>Internet Options>GENERAL Tab>Browsing History>Delete.

If the above doesn't work, try to reset IE - from within IE: Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset; this will de-activate all browser add-ons and clear your browser cache files. If IE works this way, add back your browser add-ons one-by-one until you get to the problematic one. Then, either don't use it or get a fresh version.

Once you are able to use IE, consider using FF anyway - it is faster than IE and many people think that it is more secure; just something to think about.

Good luck.

Solve : Hard disk lost space?

Answer»
Document and settings folder has grown to 62Gig there are 6sub folders with about 30Mb in the folder is there any way of getting the 61+Gig back into the C: drive without doing a full format of the machine.C:\Documents and Settings\

What Operating System?

This folder includes pretty much everything in short of PROGRAM Files.
For example, your Temporary Files, User Settings, Personal Files (my documents, my pictures, ect...), Your Desktop is located there and your APPLICATION Data is located in Documents and Settings.

You can free up a lot of space automatically using CCleaner.
My suggestion is going through your files (Desktop and My Documents First) and deleting what you don't need.
Then remove programs you don't use anymore.have you experimented with disk partitions lately?there is a program called treesize out there.  It shows you graphically where all your HD space is allocated in nice graphs etc.mfir: What are you trying to accomplish?
  Sorry operating system is XP

What i,m after is to claim back space from the documents and settings folder, properties for the folder says its 62.7 Gig , so i'm down to 1.2gig left in the C: drive .  All the folders in the documents and settings folder (there are about 6 folders) only total about 30mb.
so where is the other 62gig

Windows wont let some folders  be deleted , hidden folders perhaps ?.Highlight them, right click and click PropertiesOkay, you're just trying to gain space, it seems.

I would: a) run 'disk cleanup'  - Start>My Computer>right-click on C:>Properties>General Tab>Disk Cleanup; b) run CCleaner as suggested by Carbon Dudeoxide - be sure to select 'Delete Index.dat Files,' if you use IE. This file can grow out of control over time - note that you must re-boot to allow CCleaner to delete index.dat; also, be sure to select: Temporary Files, Clipboard, Memory Dumps;  c) look at My Documents and see if there are data files that you can move to an external drive or DVD or CD, e.g., music or pictures.

You are right to be concerned - with free space that small, you are bound to have your performance reduced. When you gain some free space, I would also suggest a defrag - wouldn't try it now because of the lack of free space.

Good luck.

EDIT: Go to 'Add/Remove Programs' and uninstall any programs that you no longer use.How about telling us the name of these MYSTERY folders and a description of some of the files that reside inside of them ? ?Try scanning C:/ with WinDirStat downloadable here.

It'll list all files and folders under the desired location. I think you need to change a few setting in the program to show hidden files and system folders.
If that doesn't work out try out Total Commander (downloadable here). That should actually show ALL files (undeleted of course) on your partition/drive.

Note: Total Commander is shareware, but doesn't force you to buy a license. I think the only DIFFERENCE to the purchased version is, that there is no notification window when starting the program.

Good luck !

Solve : HOW MANY WAYS CAN YOU CHANGE FILES?

Answer»

WHEN YOU boot windows and go into the control panel or made a change to how somethings happends with your mouse does that something such as file options, default options whatever is it connected to a file in windows folder and changes as you make your options
then you can go the folder through windows file
then you can go to the cmd prompt
then you can go to the regedit and change files
what is the purpose does each one have it's specific purpose but you can also change settings and such.
if you go into the windows file and make another file called autoexect.nt will that file work with the other autoexect.nt file(in theory they are there)
can you also take a window file and run it through a compiler and see the program. i know some files i can reach by clicking others you have to have something that can read them what is it?
ruby Quote

can you also take a window file and run it through a compiler and see the program
You obviously do not know the purpose of a compiler - have a look here..  What you want is a decompiler which is explained at this site.

However, if decompilers were freely available and if they really work, we'd all be reverse engineering Microsoft products.

Quote
i know some files i can reach by clicking others you have to have something that can read them what is it?
Are you thinking of binary files where you need a hex editor?

Quote
if you go into the windows file and make another file called autoexect.nt will that file work with the other autoexect.nt file(in theory they are there)
Do you really mean autoexec.nt (note it's autoexec not autoexect).  Why would you want a second copy of the same file when you can quite simply edit the existing autoexec.nt file using a text editor such as Notepad?

okay thank you for anwsering my question concerning the compiler you are right i don't know the purpose other than if you create a program it compiles it and turns it into a working class file.

why when you build a program is it not working does a complier help you test it as you go along or is it a hassle to compile. do you do it in stages
that what i have not been able to get that far.
i have programs written a java.class, a conversion.cpp, a hello world, a few programs in c++  and a few more but i can't get their whatever going  so they are all on notepad from there what do you do.

the reason i ask these question is i have a copy of the windows program i am just playing around with just for the sake of exploring. i take everything apart,  cars (mysite), computers, whatever stands still long enough. and no i have never taken a male apart there are a few forget that but,  i want to open more of them up. for the past 6 mo. i have been dabbling in programming.  i know why more than i can do because the prompt and commands had me stuck i could not simply get a command to work. studpid me was using brackets slashes other signs as i got mad. and i thought being in med field external was external(on disk) i am making disk after disk,. i can somewhat now.  you know if you read my other post you can see i am a mess.

now for the sake of the question about windows
i have downloaded a file analyzer
i have downloaded a jdk
i have downloaded html  i can write and create with the editor
i have downloaded gnu  i can not get the variables and i believe the rhide does not work in NT i have to do more reading there are ten things
i have downloaded python i have not even tried
i have downloaded a hex editor i have not tried
i have downloaded linux i was told LINUX IS THE LANGUAGE I NEED TO LEARN. i am finding out they all have their personalities but the same rules applies.
i do too much stumbling i love that sight every programming site  i learn a lot.

anyway i wanted to learn how to USE my prompt commands and be able to manipulate myself underground and set syntax commands and such
and i wanted to be able to open files with the windows program. i have it on d drive i hope it does not sustain d drive like c

the reason i asked about the autoexec file (i knew it was wrong) i was too lazy and frazzeled that why i put in theory. because that is my problem the command prompt.  i could go underground to a file find it or not find it and set a new command  in another file with the same name i even created a COUPLE because these programming books get me mixed up using "msdos" for xp. one even told me to put the gnu path variiable in autoexe.exe.  well for two days i searched FOUND out xp boot disk does not have the commands do i put a win 98 DOS boot disk in the system32 file.  then i find out why because xp is not a dos systems now everything begins to fall in place.
for instance trying to get the gnu i had to set the path (whole new story i posted) i know more now but still can't get program to run in rhide window i am beginning to believe it doesn't. that i have to use windows prompt to program. yea or nay.  anyway i made another file.  i cannot or could not go to the windows prompt and get a command to work until someone told me how to get the c prompt by using cd\ and cls.  now i can get dir command
and all the exe commands. even notepad from the prompt so i might be a programmer.  i would like to know what program i have to have to open those windows files that when you open them with note pad it looks srammbled SPACED writing.
thank you for your time priceless

Solve : Having a serious problem with my computer?

Answer»

The computer works fine when it is not connected to an internet connection. When you plug the modem in no matter if you use USB or intranet connection, the computer will just set there and continuously reboot. We've tried 3 different modems, all are good. We've tried new connector's, they all work fine on our 2nd computer, We've had the ISP come out and check the LINES everything checks out. This has to be some sort of internal problem with my computer. Has anyone ran into this problem before if so how did you fix it........HELP.....Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <><  you might want to TRY to reintall your network card/modem drivers...or if all else fails replace the card/modemSystem is XP, AVG 7.5, Started happening about a week ago, computer worked fine up until then....no new software...Try doing a system RESTORE to a date prior to the problem starting / try samcarney's suggestion.

Alan <><  If these are PCI modems remove them and clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol and re-install them.
For the USB devices i would go to Control Panel/System/Device MANAGER and find every instance of USB roots and hubs...right click every one and select remove/uninstall. You will recieve a warning message...ignore it.
Re-boot the system and then re-plug the USB modem

Solve : Reloading Windows XP Pro?

Answer»

I am trying to reload my DELL D620 Laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2. When I get to the step were it is copying files to the Windows INSTALLATION folder, I get an error telling me that "Setup cannot copy the file: fsvga.sys. It than tells me to "Press enter to retry", "Press escape to skip the file", or press F3 to quit.  I have tried 3 different cd's and tried 2 different CD-R drives, reseated the memory stick, and reseated the hard drive.  I am now leaning towards replacing the hard drive. Any ideas on what might be causing this problem? Can you post your hardware specs?

Pull everything out of your machine that you don't need to just get the machine loaded. If you have more than one RAM chip pull one of them out leave the min you can get by with to load the machine.

Than try to load it again.

this is a wild guess, but reformatt your HDHardware Specs:
-40 GB hard drive
-1 GB RAM
-DVD R/RW Burner

The machine is running the minimum to operate. I also reformatted the hard drive.Memory problems are the usual cause of "cannot copy " messages during XP install.

Okay, I will try to replace the memory.Hi i used have the same problem but with a different file, i just pressed the escape button and it CARRIED on installing. The only reason i came up with why this was happening was the copy of XP i was using was not a legal copy. The guy who built my computer GAVE it to me Those hardware specs were pretty comprehensive...
If you haven't noticed we thrive on details here.

Solve : XP format?

If I needed to format my hard drive and I right click format on the C:// drive WOULD i need the disk to be able to re install the OS or does the format not format everything?Formatting a drive or volume REMOVES everything.
And that means you will be needing your disk to be able to re-install your OS.. Unless you have done some cloning to your disk..You cannot format your OS drive from within Windows...

Solve : Fresh xp install endless loop?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I am cornered on this problem. I need help. I had this xp pro sp2 on my computer and whenever I had problems with viruses or bad software installation, I just back-up files and fresh install because I don't have enought technical know how to tweak. But this time is different. I use the same xp cd to fresh install, format ntfs single partition 40g HDD. It goes through up to the set-up COPY files readying for xp installation and request to booth and it did, only to start to installation all over again and again. A tip from a site, I tried to booth win98 to fdisk and format but it won't find/detect the hdd. But BIOS is detecting it. All advice is welcome. Thanks in advance. Two common reasons this may be happening:
One: The hard drive has errors/bad sectors or is failing...
To test this DLoad and run the DIAGNOSTICS from the HDD manuf. website...they are FREE.
Two: The RAM you have may be having the same symptoms. Remove each STICK you have and clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol or Jack Daniels and re-insert them.
Then DLoad and run MemTest...let it run for a few hours. Any errors at all and you have a bad stick of RAM.

Solve : ScreenSaver hack help?

Do you mean the password that prompts when the screensaver goes off?
I meant when i come back and move the mouse, a password is suppose to appear to get back to my computer...but it doesn't.Try this:

Right click the Desktop, GO to Properties and then the Screen Saver Tab.
Then, check the box circled in the Picture below and press OK.

Yes i already did that step, my screensaver works properly with password protected it if executes by windows (x minutes setting).  but when i execute it manually it doesnt password protect.  I looked through my shortcut properties and didnt see anything special to do.Hmmm.....I assume you made a shortcut to the screensaver file in C:\Windows\system32?

Actually, I don't think it works like this... When it starts automatically, it's starting through the Windows Application but when you just run the screensaver file, you are just opening the file.yes i made a shortcut to system32 folder.  I will keep researching and if i figure it out I will post it here. THANKS!I found it

Password Protected Screensaver

If you leave your computer and use the screen saver to lock your screen up you will most likely find out that making shortcuts to the screen saver will not get your computer password protected and it will only be protected when the screen saver is run after idle time of X minutes.

solution1 . To over come this you can actually use the lock computer function (Windows Key + L)

solution2 . Make a shortcut the the shortcut that can be treated like the screen saver shortcuts.

* Right click an empty area of your desktop, choose New/Shortcut and enter this LINE as the command line:

* rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

* Click Next. Name the shortcut whatever you prefer and click Finish. That's it.

* If you'd like to change the icon, just right click the shortcut and go to Properties/Shortcut/Change Icon. If you want open up c:\windows\system32 and find the keys icon to go with your locking shortcut. As it is now a icon shortcut you can make a shortcut on your desktop and quick launch.

Additional . If you have the welcome screen on you can turn it off to make password entering easier and more corporate when you return to your computer. To do this change the setting back to classic login prompt.

Start > Control Panel > UserAccounts > Change the way users log on and off
> [Uncheck] Use Welcome Screen

Solve : monitor problems...?

Answer»

When I switch on the pc each morning, it takes about 10-15 mins for anything to appear on monitor, then all I GET for the next 5 mins is weird different coloured lines appearing on the screen. Plus a heck of a lot of FLICKERING. Eventually, everything goes back to normal.  This has been happening for about a week where as before it would be FULLY on WITHIN minutes. It's a packard bell a few YEARS old. What could be the problem?Do you have another display you can switch with your current one just to rule out a bad display?fiddle about with the buttons on the front of your monitor and hopefully you will see factory reset.

if this does nothing to help then it looks like the monitor is on its way out.Not necessarily - could be the video card. That's why I suggested switching displays.

Solve : Preventing GetRight from Launching?

Answer»

Only rarely is a RESUMING facility needed these days, so I want to keep GetRight only for those rare ocassions; but it can INTERFERE with downloading when there is NO need for RESUMING, so I want to keep it UNLAUNCHED until I need it. I can not find that option in its Preferences, nor does it have an entry in MSConfig; StartUp tab, that I could untick. There is probably something in Registry that might block it. Can you help me prevent GetRight from launching ?If there is no option in the program preferences download and run Mike Lin's Startup CONTROL Panel (http://www.blogsdna.com/2173/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm). Look for the Getright entry on all tabs and if you find it, uncheck it.

BTW, NEVER USE msconfig to DISABLE startup items. Use a dedicated program such as Startup Control Panel.

If you don't see an entry for it, there must be an item in the program's options that you are missing.Thank you for the advice. I can not see the RELEVANCE of the hyperlink you provided (I'm not using Windows 7) but I've downloaded both versions of Mike Lin's StartUp Control Panel - not knowing how to prefer one. HOPE it helps.Sorry, that was a typo - it was intended for another thread. But yes, just use Startup Control Panel.

I suggest downloading CCleaner and clean up Mozilla Firefox and the Registry (go over the registry a couple times).
In the cleaner, Uncheck everything except Mozilla Firefox Browser Cache and Cookies. You MAY want to visit our Virus and Spyware section and follow the instructions for posting your logs at the TOP of the page...start computer in safe mode, then run your AVG to let it completely scan.i tried running ccleaner and the comp hanged again when i tried to clean firefox under application
was goin thru temp files when the ccleaner took really long to "clean" a particular file(which was part of firefox)
i have left the comp on overnight (abt 5 HRS) it was still at the same file

guess i will try postin under virus n spyware section
thanks alot 4 e helpYou could try it in Safe Mode but it wont hurt to post in the Virus and Spyware section.

No, that wont WORK. Although, you can dual boot Windows XP and Vista if you install them on different partitions.

As for what you're asking, I don't know it's possible. I think there is something to upgrade Windows but I'm not sure,i see, i dident know that.. im guessing the reason is because vista uses ntfs2?NTFS2?? Never heard of that... I think Vista uses the same format as XP.

I meant you cannot simply install Vista over XP and keep your files.what version of windows vista are you using.... because you can only downgrade to windows xp if you have vista business.

that is what the guy in the comp store told me. it doesnt matter if you format the hard drive either Quote from: programming_pat on June 26, 2008, 04:03:41 AM

Solve : Eliminating the sign-in screen?

Answer»

I have Win XP sp2.  For no discernible reason I now have to click on as Administrator when STARTING a SESSION or returning from down time.

What caused this and how can I eliminate it?

ThanksGo into your Display Settings and select the Screensaver tab.

You'll notice a box with a tick mark:  On resume, display Welcome screen

Untick that box and save your settings...you should be good to go.Thank you very much.

I figured it would be simple.

Much appreciated.You're welcome...One last question:

Now how do you eliminate the log-on screen from the initial boot?

I still have no idea how it suddenly appeared. It's automatic after one of the Service Pack updates...I FORGET which one...

Anyway...

Did you have a PASSWORD before for your account?  Are you the Administrator or just a user?

Solve : Help with accessing websites and searches?

Answer»

Hi, this is my first time using this website and I've been looking around on websites for ages for help with my question , but none seem to have as many experts as they do here. I tend to mess with my setting s on my computer alot,  and I downloaded some harmful things in the past so that resulted in viruses and such and LONG STORY short, i had to restart windows all over again, but the same problem exists. I cannot access certain websites that have poker in their domain name and when i search for "poker" it gives me an error message like this:   Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

   Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

   What you can try:
     Diagnose Connection Problems

     More information

I THINK this is error message 401. ANYWAYS, I didn't have this problem in the past, and it WORKS fine with all the other computers. I think there is a host file error, but I don't know how to fix this. Can somebody please help me?

Im not so sure about this but I know in Internet Explorer you have the option to restrict the browser from opening a site with options set by the user. You might want to check the tools menu on your browser..

Sorry, Im using firefox thatś why I can not tell exactly where to find it in explorer.. Just hang in there.. Is this your machine or is it possible your folks have installed some blocking software ? ?
More details.I was thinking the same thing patioYes, this is my labtop and I have checked the setting for my browser. I was able to play poker before, but cannot now because of some sort of computer error.

from a  few days i have been receiving an error masg that  "task manager has been disabled by your administrator" on my XP. I have  only one user on my pc and that is the  administrator which i use , then how can the task manager be disabled.....HELPThis may help....

http://www.pchell.com/support/taskmanagerdisabled.shtml
Method # 5 will work but there must be a bug or virus on your computer. You should check out Computer virus and Spyware on this forum and have your computer checked out. OR, if you have Windows XP Professional, try this:

- Click Start
- Click Run
- Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK
In the Group Policy settings window
- Select User Configuration
- Select ADMINISTRATIVE Templates
- Select System
- Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete OPTIONS
- Double-click the Remove Task Manager option

I don't think it's MALWARE.I didn't think it was malware either or I would have pointed him the spyware forum

OP is i have gone through Carbon Dudeoxide but when i enter administrative templates it shows timer then i cant see system.I too  GUESS something is wrong.when i sign in to yahoo messenger then when i keep it minimize, it comes on screen  and then automatically status is changed.Download HijackThis:

Solve : help again :(?

Okay.... so we've hit another ISSUE.....  We're attempting to just wipe the os off.... and install a new.. or well.... going with the xp again... just starting over.  Unfortunately.... have no clue how to do that while the operating SYSTEM wont boot.... the hard drive is detected through bios but isnt in xp....  How can we wipe the os to even begin installing the new?Boot from the OS cd (change bios to boot from cdrom first) then follow the on-screen prompts.

Good luckIt wont boot from the os cd though?? Quote from: Dusty on June 30, 2008, 08:14:33 PM

Boot from the OS cd (change bios to boot from cdrom first) then follow the on-screen prompts.

Did you GO into the BIOS and set it like Dusty recommended?

Alan <><
Depending on how old the computer is...or the manufacturer and model number...sometimes the manufacturer of the PC includes a recovery PARTITION so you can restore your computer to its factory settings.

Do you KNOW if the manufacturer has provided this partition on your hard drive?  Can you supply us with the manufacturer and model number?

I'll be more than happy to look into it for you to see if this option is available on your computer...Go into BIOS setup and move over to BOOT or BOOT ORDER. You want to change your CD drive to be the first boot device. Press the plus and minus keys to move your devices up and down in the boot order. Place your XP CD in your master CD drive. Now exit BIOS and save changes.

You will see a blue screen that will guide you through setup. Make sure you follow this order:
1.Delete partitions
2. Create a partition
3. Format your partition

The first thing you want to do after an install is make sure all of your drivers loaded. To do this click start then run and type in devmgmt.msc. This will take you to device manager. If you see any yellow or red "?" or "!" there, you will need a driver for that device. To save yourself a lot of headaches, find the drivers for your machine before you do the wipe. Go to your computer manufacturers website and look to see if they have a drivers download page. Download these and save them to a disk. Now if your drivers didnt load you will have them on a handy CD.

The next thing you should do, after the wipe, is go to microsoft update and get all of the updates for your machine.

Solve : question about boot disk/cd in windows xp?

Answer»

can someone tell me whats the difference between the ms-dos boot DISK (the one you can create by right CLICK on A: drive in window) and the one that you manually put in the boot.ini, NTLDR and ntdetect.com? and btw can you create one of these on a CD? thanksWelxcome to the CH forums.

The ms-dos disk will boot to ms-dos.

The floppy/cd containing NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM will boot into NT and load WINDOWS XP from the partition/folder specified in BOOT.INI.

Here is an earlier discussion on the latter from the Hardware forum.

Good luck

Solve : Loading XP Pro over Vista?

Answer»

How do I load XP PRO on a machine that currently has Vista on it. I have heard you have to totally format the drive. How do you do that in Vista? If you want to completely remove Vista and install Windows XP, you will need the Windows XP CD.
If you have it, you will have to boot from the CD and follow the instructions.

Note, this will remove *everything* currently on the Hard Disk (including all your programs and files)So, I take it that it will load over Vista? And yes, I have a new XP Pro installation disk. I was told by SOMEONE that Vista would not let you load an older OS, like XP, over it.That's if you want to Dual Boot Windows Vista and XP. There are WAYS to do it the other way but to do that, you need to load Vista before XP.

In your case, you can use your XP CD to go over Vista.Vista will not let you install an older OS...
You will need a bootdisk to format that drive before attemptiong an install of XP
You should collect all the drivers for that machine beforehand to avoid headaches.

The bootdisks can be found at bootdisk.comOh, I thought you COULD just pop the disc in there...

Yep thats it.

Not sure if its anything to do with this new account i,ve added, one possable answer could be, i installed two additional toolbars.

just going to have a look in "servives" and "startup"Hello i managed to sort it out.
Though i don,t know how this all works , but i disabled "SearchProtection" from loading on startup, which has something to do with yahoo.
As it was up to me weather i had it loading at startup i disable it then restared the computer, and the log on screen is now visableSo problem solved?

Solve : Allow regular user to unlock screensaver locked computer?

Answer»

We have the problem that in a multiuser environment USERS either lock their computers, or have the screensaver automatically lock it, and leave the workstation.  As a result, nobody else can use that computer.  By default, only the current user or an adminstrator can unlock the computer. I would LIKE to allow select users who don't have administrator access to unlock the computer.

Is there a group policy or Windows Security setting that would allow some of my users (i.e. non administators) to unlock a workstation?

So far all I can find is a third party application ( Unlock Administrator http://www.e-motional.com/ULAdmin.htm ) This program seems to do the trick but I OBVIOUSLY would prefer to do this through GP.

Note: I don't want to LET just anyone to unlock the computer - I want to be able to select only some users.

Any suggestions? Not 100% here but can you TRY this:

Go to Gpedit.msc --> User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> CTRL + ALT + Delete Options and double click Remove Lock Computer.
