Solve : XP error?

Answer»

Hey I'm on my sisters computer which is a Windows ME
well anyways

I tried loadin my computer but it keeps coming up with "NTLDR Missing  restart press Ctrl-Alt-Del" and that keeps coming up
so I tried the Recover Console that came with my XP Restore DVD
it worked until 21% then the rest of the files couldn;t be extracted cause it says the files could't be open

so I tried to Reformat the whole computer but then it only worked until it got to 61% then it said the same thing most of the  files couldn't be open

PLEASE help
im no computer expert but i know some things If you're trying to reinstall the operating system on your sister's computer...which has Windows ME installed...you can't use your XP DVD RECOVERY software.

You'll need to use the recovery software that came with your sister's computer...or, if you don't have this software...you'll need to contact the manufacturer and order the recovery software. No no I'm not tryin to reinstall the operating system on my systers computer lol
im just using it

my computer which is a Gateway Media Center XP is the one thats not workingWhat model Gateway?  How old is it?The Model is GT5238E and I got it like in January of 2007You can try cleaning the Recovery software disc and try again.  Sometimes, you may need to delete the partition, reformat the drive in NTFS and try the installation again.

Please note:  When using the Recovery Console...you'll wipe the computer contents and reinstall everything as it came from the factory.

You can also check to see if the computer came with a Recovery partition...which is basically a Ghost of the system as it came from the factory...and try using the recovery partition to bring your computer back to its factory settings.I tired using the  Recovery partition but that didn;t help

How do I delete the Partition so I can reformat itHere's a guide you can use:  Windows XP Clean InstallSaviour, you have a very nice website but your statement:

"Please note:  When using the Recovery Console...you'll wipe the computer contents and reinstall everything as it came from the factory." ...Isn't quite correct.

Using the Recovery Console, (akin to the CMD line) you can repair or delete files, repair the MBR, fix the boot partition with FIXBOOT, etc, etc. I think you were refering to using the (ASR) Automated System Recovery w/XP and that would only work if you had created an ASR disc and that would have caused you to lose everything that had been added or installed after the CREATION of the disc. If you were using the (So called and misleading) recovery CD supplied with the Gateway system that would restore back to the factory install, and you would lose all. Also if you know how to access the Recovery Partion in Xp that too would revert your system back to the factory install.

I can't find that quote on his page- he has this:

"Please note:  When using the Recovery Partition...you'll wipe the computer contents and reinstall everything as it came from the factory."

which is correct.

EDIT: Oh, he DID say that before. oh well.
I did say "Recovery Console", but meant "recovery partition"...my bad...it's been a long day.

And thanks for the kin words about the site...much appreciated.

At any rate, kyle232...

Your Gateway model should have come with a recovery partition...if I read the manual correctly from Gateway's website, for your particular model.

Here's what you do to recover your computer to its original factory settings...

This process will wipe the contents of the drive and reinstall everything as it came from the factory...this means you'll lose anything new you've added.

Turn your computer on and press the F11 key while it's booting...it should take you to the Gateway Recovery Program so you can get your computer back to its original state.

All you have to do is follow the onscreen instructions.

Here's the link to your USER Guide...on pages 48 and 49 you'll see info about performing a system recovery.

http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8511050.pdfI did boot my computer and press F11 then the Recovery thing worked up to 21% then is said    "trouble in extracting Windows/system32/config/systemprofile/Recent/AXEL.DAV couldn't open"
then it said the same thing for wach file after that..
it would say

"Trouble in extracting (then the file PATH) couldn;t be opened"

so I tried using the Restore DVD that came with the computer but then it did the same thing it stop once it got up to the AXEL.DAVyea the link you have em for the   Windows XP CLean install
i went on it and read it, it won;t work for me cause I dont have a Windows XP Home Edition

I have a Gateway XP Media Center

so i think If i erase everything off my hardrive
it may work If i reformat it

not sure if that makes sense or not lol

Solve : email name?

Answer»

How do I take my name off the from box on emails sent? You MEAN anonymous emails?

......Why......... No, I don't want my name automatically written on every email I send.If you mean Signature, it can be turned off in your Email Settings.

However, I don't know if that helps at all because I don't know how you are sending these emails... Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 22, 2008, 10:26:03 AM

No, I don't want my name automatically written on every email I send.
Um, what's the difference?  I see anonymous blaring out here.Unless Gsk means he doesn't want the name on his/her signature.

But your assumption was my first assumption. Quote from: gsk on June 22, 2008, 10:20:50 AM
How do I take my name off the from box on emails sent?
My interpretation is he's not talking about a signature.  The From box normally shows the sending account.  My understanding is he WANTS that to be blank. If he's using OUTLOOK or OE, couldn't he just edit the account to have no name? Or is that not accepted?CHANGE his ADDRESS with his server to one that does not include his name. i.e. People I send emails to know my email address. I just don't my name on the from box on mail sent. What form box and how are you sending them?

Solve : Werid problem with input.?

Answer»

It's kinda hard to describe the problem, but I'll try.

When I hold a key down, it only work for a short time and then nothing happen.

For example: If I were to hold the left arrow button for 10 sec, it only move couple of space to the left . The cursor does not move left continuously and will stop after a second or so. It also lags my computer (like if I were to hold the key down and my MP3 is playing, the song stutters - and my computer isn't old, it's new ). This isn't limited to backspace, but all the buttons. If I were to hold the button "a" for 10 second, this is what comes up "aaaaaaaaaaaaaa" (it's the length of character i inputs differs each time). and my computer would make a beep when I let go the key.

Does ANYONE know what's wrong with my computer? :S

Sorry if this doesn't belong in this forum. Can you give us some of the specs on your computer, please?

Specifically, the CPU speed...amount of RAM INSTALLED...what operating system you're running...what programs are running while you're trying this with the keyboard, etc., etc...

The more information we have about your system, the better suited we are to helping you.

To me...it seems you have to much going on while you're using the repeat function of the keyboard...and it can't process it fast enough...that's why you get that beeping noise when you release the key.  The system is trying to catch up.

Now...if you were to close all applications and then try the same thing...you may notice a difference in the speed of the key's repeat function.

You can always change your keyboard's repeat speed and delay by going into your Control Panel/Keyboard/Speed tab....and then fool around with the delay rate and speed settings to find just what's right for you.AMD athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 4800+.
2 GB RAM
Window XP

Even if nothing is on except MS Word, this happens.

Any other information I need to give?Nice specs...

Did you read what I posted before?

I guess I missed the LAST part.

I just change the repeat rate from fast to slow, and it's working perfectly. The repeat is a bit slow, but I can live with it.  It's better then hitting the left arrow button repeatingly.

Thanks

Solve : Disk defragmenter suddenly missing.?

Answer»

Hello all:

Am a newbie here and have checked the forums to a possible answer to the problem of discovering that the disk deframenter is no longer listed among the system tools.

Windows XP service pack 3 was recently INSTALLED on 5/31/08 ( an automatic update ).  Would this have anything to do with this?  If not, how do I get the disk defragmenter back?  ( No add/remove program PROCEDURES were done either. )

Thank You.
Try going to Control Panel (category view) --> Performance and Maintenance --> Click on Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster.Try going to Start,Run, then type in the following see below.

%SystemRoot%\INF

Now right click on 'dfrg' and choose Install.hw did you go with that procedureApprentice:  The procedure that Egghead gave didn't install the defragmenter.

There's a message that says the Diskeeper failed to connect to the service.  The service may have stopped.  See the Windows Event Log for more details.

Went to the Event Log, and from the looks of that, my computer will have to be taken in and fixed.  Having moved recently, I will have to find the recovery disk.

Thanks to all for your help.So then this is not the built-in Windows Disk defragmenter, but rather Diskeeper? The service appears to have somehow been disabled. Try looking at your services (Start->Run "Services.msc") and try to find something related to Diskeeper (I couldn't tell you the exact name). If it is Disabled, Right-click, and start it. Then see if Diskeeper will run.B_C Programmer:

After your suggestion, it appears that it is the Diskeeper as was mentioned in my previous post.  Not knowing how to check that out until you came along, I had no clue as to what was really going on.  There are several disabled items there, most of which pertain to a shared computer ( which we do not have ), but there are also others that I know should not be disabled.   TRIED to right click, but the start and other areas are grayed out, which means that they won't be able to do anything.

I just wonder now if this also has anything to do with a worm called Atinney1 has anything to do with all this, or if it's the new antivirus program that I had installed via our ISP.  Parts of our former spyware ( Webroot ) also had to be removed as the computer was doing weird things.  I did use the add/remove program to remove Webroot, and evidently it STILL left things in the hard drive instead of being removed completely.  SINCE then, there have been problems of one sort or another.  To me, it seems to be one big mess.

Gotta find that disk and get this baby to a repair shop.

Thanks, B_C , for telling me where & how to look.the reason they are disabled in the right-click is because they have been disabled. you'll need to right click->properties and then change the start mode from Disabled to either manual or automatic, then you'll be able to start the service.B_C:  Question:  Do I also have to "Start" each disabled feature?  Upon looking under the Help button at the top left, I see that these may be related to Service Pak 2.  We recently had an update to Service Pak 3, and I have heard that many problems have cropped up with Service Pak 3.  My brother didn't have problems, but we sure do.
Thanks again. Quote from: wiladyreader on June 28, 2008, 09:45:00 PM

B_C:  Question:  Do I also have to "Start" each disabled feature?

If you want it to run, yes. The idea of enabling it was to allow you to start it .

If possible, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling Diskeeper. I have successfully installed/run it on my current machine running SP3. I believe when you install a Service Pack Microsoft "does you a favor" by disabling all services except for the ones it thinks you should run.

Solve : error message when starting the computer?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I'm having a little bit of bother EVERY time i boot up my computer. I am currently RUNNING windows XP and every time i start the computer i receive a message telling me that:

"updates are ready to be installed on your computer"

then it gave me the option to restart and install the updates, so that is what i did but i still got the same message so i went into the control panel and clicked on system-automatic updates and everything seemed fine only now when i boot up my computer i receive the same message as the one above and another message that says:

error loading C:\progra~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL

I've already looked through some of the other questions in the forum and came across a link to check all of my updates on the microsoft website, so i did that and everything there also seems to be o.k

I don't know if the two messages are at all related or why when i restart my computer I am still RECEIVING these messages but if you could help me out I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks
lorraineMywebs toolbar is malware. If it has been REMOVED from your computer, there are still bits of it left. Just hang tight and a Malware SPECIALIST will be along to help. You could also visit  the Virus and Malware section in this forum and read the second thread from the top. BTW, were these MS updates there were ready to be installed?Hi again,

Thank you for the speedy reply to my problem. As far as i knew they were Microsoft updates but then i checked the Microsoft site for a history of my updates and all seems to be fine - so maybe they are something else entirely but the message is not giving me any clue to what the updates are.....

"Restarting computer is required" - Computer must be restarted for updates to install, would you like to restart the computer? YES/NO

I've tried going into the control panel to switch it off but so far no joy!

Thanks againOn my XP, when updates are available there is just a small icon in the quick-launch tray and then it very seldom that you have to restart after the download. I quite sure that you have some bugs on your computer. You should follow the instructions in my earlier post and run the tests to determine what is wrong. MyWebs is Malware and somehow it was installed on your computer. Clik Here  and follow the instructions...

Solve : How can I see what programs my computer turns on when I start it on??

Answer»

How can I see what programs my computer (LIKE the list the computer has) turns on when I start it on?
Note: Could be of only the programs I installed.... I want to try to make some of them to not start when I start on my computer.Start -> Run...

Type in: msconfig
Click "OK".

"Startup" tab... should list everything.Cool, thanks.

I can stop some of the programs (that I installed) from starting up right after I turn on my computer and just turn them on when I need them. Right?usually, depends on what the program is, some are required for some hardware to work properly.Download, and install Quick Startup: http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html
Go File>Export, save report, and paste it into your next post.

We'll tell you what's safe to disable. Here's the Report:

Solve : PLEASE HELP~ Computer crash...ahh!?

Answer»

Hi!

Ok, so Wednesday morn I boot up my 3 year old HP Windows XP desktop that I have never had a problem with. Well just before the log in MENU is suppose to come up, THE BSOD came!! (Black Screen Of Death), only this black screen had a blinking horizontal (underscore) at the top left.

Oh dear, let me add that  I run my home computer/entire office out of this little thing.

So, I cold boot, retry, again...nothing.

So, I turn back on, and the blue HP screen comes up, at the bottome f10 for setup, etc etc. So, I push f10 - and start the setup. Me, not being that computer SAVVY, and not knowing what else to do, start the process of wiping out my entire computer. My smart daughter comes over, and together we realize that my computer, files, all of my programs I use for work will be wiped out! EKK...not good. Thinking on impluse we turn off the computer (cold boot). Now what? We turned back on the computer and it began to start up, this time the BSOD did not come up (yay) BUT a black screen with a windows message did. Reading something like `You have not fully completed/installed the setup. Please finish`. Our only option is to puch OK , begins to restart and then it will come to that message, push OK, begins to restart and then comes to that message. Next quick thinking solution, SAFE MODE..where is it? It isn;t there, maybe because we have half finished the set up?

Next idea...what about the 3 year warranty I purchised through Staples, stil in affect? YES! Call Staples, bring the computer in. They tell me I can fix it and to PICK it up in two days.

Come in today, guess what? I get told that my only option is to wipe out the entire computer, I will loose all my work, except they can back it up for me for an extra $$, oh ya, and this isn;t covered under warrenty! What? You mean that the only time I have to use my warrenty and it isn;t covered? The guy I talked to on Wednesday said it was covered and they nwould fix it,,, ugh

So - because of the miscommuncation, they give me back my broken computer and give me my $100 warrenty back. So I am STUCK with a broken computer and $100 bucks...I would prefer no money and a fixed computer... sigh.

So, obviously I can back up my computer, but how? I dont mind wiping out my computer if I back everything up...but is this more complicated than I can do? Any suggestions, please, thanks sooo much for taking the time to read my ammusing yet very frustrating situation! OK -- Hang in there.  Welcome to the forum!

My answer will not be complete, since I will not make recommendations of which I am not completely sure -- especially when data is on the line!  There are many experienced people here who may better guide you.

If you are unsure of instructions, don't hesitate to ask clarification.

Do you have a Recovery Disk or a copy of the Windows operating system which should've been provided when you purchased the computer? Also do you have access to another pc running XP on which you can hang your hard drive to attempt non-destructive file recovery?   Either slaved (ide drives) or with external usb connection?

It looks like you started to wipe the drive but turned if off before it could complete it. If you're lucky, some of your files may still be intact.

Also, warranty's usually only cover hardware problems not software problems, which looks to be the case here.

I suggest you try booting off the Windows CD like Aegis suggested and perform a Repair Install. If that doesn't work, I would go with Dusy and use it has a slave on another computer to retrieve the data. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 27, 2008, 03:05:36 AM

after you slave the drive and backup any neccesary files, it would prob be best to do a clean install to make sure that your windows is installed properlyFor a little more information about a repair install

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspxI unfortunalty don't have the Windows CD, my computer came with it alreaady installed and wasn;t given a copy.

I do have a laptop - would that work??Is it possible you can borrow someone else's disc?

I just remembered something! Portable Linux.
If you have a spare USB Flash Drive laying around and you can copy all the data to another machine, you can temporarily install a Portable Linux so you can boot off the USB Drive and copy your files to the drive if you are urgent to retrieve those files.

I use this one here;
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2006/09/20/all-in-one-usb-slaxzip/UPDATE:

Ok, so from a great resource, I found that pushing f8 brought me to safe mode! Yay

But there are three options:

Safe mode
Safe mode with Networking
Safe mode with command prompt

Which one, and once I do that what will happen?

Thanks for all your help guys - I really appreciate it. Choose the first "Safe Mode"

"Safe mode with Networking" is if you want to connect to the Internet or other computers.

"Safe mode with command prompt" is for the fanboys who love to type in commands at the prompt to make their computers do stuff.

"Safe Mode" will boot your computer with minimum resources.  Keyboard, mouse, CD-Roms/optical drives, and minimum video resolution, so if the video looks strange, don't worry.

Please see if your computer will boot to the first "Safe Mode" and we'll go from there.
I thought he said he started to wipe the drive....how can he still be able to get into safe mode  It's kind of a dice roll at this point.

I'm hoping the cancellation of removing files -- even if done by turning off the system -- left the system pretty much intact.

Solve : Possible Spyware & Ram Problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I think a particular program I tried was disguised malware. When I use firefox or ie, random websites open up, and so I assumed it succeeded in installing something, EVEN though symantec antivirus caught a few files and deleted them, and a quick scan revealed everything was fine.

When I go to direct links everything is quick, however a google search is really slow (doesn't finish), and I can't seem to be ABLE to load google.ca and yahoo.ca at times, but www.uwaterloo.ca loads instantly. I have a high connection speed - speedtest revelaed 6000+ kbps.

When I run adaware, the CPU freezes with the following BSOD line:
0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x002F006E, 0xB38F6CF0, 0x00000000)

I also upgraded RAM today from 1GB to 2GB, so I'm running memtest to see if that could be a problem. The laptop doesn't seem to be any faster with moderate tasks - makes me wonder if something's running in the background slowing it down as well.

The laptop is a Toshiba TECRA M4(P4 2.0GHz, Geforce 6600 Tablet edition, 1Gig Ram upgraded to 2 Gigs ++ - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2474)

That's the main problem, the SECOND is how do I go into the BIOS for this laptop?

Thanks & God Bless

-SurajI had a similiar problem, with Firefox saying "Waiting for google.ca" when I search, but never actually displaying anything. IE6 worked fine, but the problem was apparently a deeply rooted trojan. I don't have an anti-virus and had to clean it out manually via the registry, recovery console, and a look in Process Explorer, and I'd rather not guide someone through such a trouble-prone procedure. Rather I think you should make a post in the Viruses and Spyware forum, as they will be able to give you instructions that are much easier to follow then I ever could.Roger - Spybot Search and Destroy found a few abnormalities. And reports errors on its trojan include file.

Can an admin please move this to the right section? Don't want to re-create the post.

Thanks for all the help!Posted it there already. This topic can be closed.Topic closed.

Solve : Why Run??

Answer»

Sir,

I have a Pentium IV with 2.54 MHz and 256 RAM.

Recently, due to reformatting, I have reinstalled WindowsXP SP 2.  But I have the following problem :

(a)  When I type some thing in any software (word, excel, pp, etc), each word takes a lot of time to appear, which is extremely irritating.

(b) When I type 'Run' command (msconfig, sysedit, ping etc), the same appears for a flash of second and then disappears making me unable to edit/change.

Why So?

Reason and Remedies please ?

Thanks and REGARDS and inadvance.

Add some more RAM...
Most definitely, but the slow keyboard response COULD be due to:
http://www.techxplore.net/2007/11/05/windows-xp-slow-keyboard-response-cause/
■accidentally turned on windows “Sticky Keys” feature
■keyboard auto-repeat delay and rate misconfiguration
■rogue process running
■virus/worm/spy bot infection
■computer overheatingMr. Patio and MR. Commando,

Firstly thank you both for the kind response.

Secondly,

I will heed to your advice to increase RAM. But my nagging doubt is - The same amount of RAM was there all along, but this problem was not there earlier (before recent formatting). I have SEVERAL times edited the msconfig, sysedit, tried ping.... etc.

No, sir, I have not turned on the sticky keys.

I will check for overheating (it is in a confined space)

I will install anti-virus once again and run it and check for virus.

And let you know later on (after success)

Meanwhile,

Once again thank you.

When I type 'Run' command (msconfig, sysedit, ping etc), the same appears for a flash of second and then disappears making me unable to edit/change.

Two ways to fix that.  One, type CMD at the run prompt and that will open a command prompt window that will stay on.

My favorite is to pin command prompt to the start menu.  It does the same thing as typing CMD at the run prompt, but it's always there and quicker to use.

Start > all programs > accessories > command prompt >right click and click on pin to start menu.
Thank you, Sirs.

I shall follow the advice given.

Solve : Computer freezes on boot up screen?

Answer»

Windows XP SP3
Not really sure of the right section to post yet, so will start here first.
I power on the computer, it goes through the boot sequence showing it has recognised the primary master (hdd), secondary master (rom) and secondary slave (cddvdw) and then it just sits there in the boot screen. No activity light is showing.
The soft boot button doesn't do ANYTHING useful as it goes back to the same point again. I keep powering off completely and restarting, and after quite a few goes it seems to get over it and goes into the Windows startup screen.
Have run anti Virus/Spyware/Malware, cleared out unwanted files, and done a disk defrag but the same problem occurs.
At a bit of a loss now as to what could be causing this. Any suggestions?
Regards As no one has replied, l assume no one has any ideas then!
Not to worry as l think l may have it sussed (and it's sort of my fault), so for future reference, if anyone is interested....
I know my INTERNAL hdd is small but the other day, up came a MESSAGE to say l'm running LOW on disk space. Did a bit of a spring clean, moved a lot of files onto my external drive, thus reclaiming back nearly 50% of space.
Did a defrag and everything now seems back to how it was before.
So l suppose the lesson l have learnt from this is that if the pc really slows down, APART from doing the obvious virus/spyware/malware/file cleaning tasks etc, ALSO check on the amount of disk space used and disk space free.
Hope this is of help.
RegardsIt's been posted here many many times but just for your memory banks Windows needs approx. 15% free space to run properly...
And the errors that start happening don't always point to this being the culprit...

Thanx for the heads up and glad yer fixed...

Solve : File Transfers?

Answer»

I've been given a new computer (new to me anyhow) which runs XP. My old computer ran WIN2K. I'm looking for suggestions on the easiest way to transfer everything on the old computer to the new one. I don't mean just moving the FILES. I mean, I think, essentially transferring the Registry, and maybe EVEN the Desktop.

I know I can just switch hard drives, but I'd prefer to upgrade to XP, if possible.

Any suggestions?1) You cannot transfer the registry nor do you WANT to try.
2) You can use the file and transfer settings wizard for the rest (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/crawford_november12.mspx)
3) All applications will have to be reinstalled on the new system. Thanks for the quick response. I really didn't think I could transfer the Registry, but it was worth asking about.
The article was most interesting (Im sure I have a null modem cable here somewhere), and I may try that.
#3 was the one I was trying to avoid. I just upraded another computer from Win98SE to Win2K, and I had to go through that, so I'm looking for a way around it this time.

Solve : Outlook in Safe Mode?

Answer»

I'm have XP pro, Office 2003.  Outlook is starting up in safe mode after reinstalling it [recovery from backup].  I can't set up the email because I don't have the network password.  I wrote all passwords down when originally set up a couple of years ago and have kept up with automatic windows/office updates.  Does anyone know a default that I could try?  I tried the passwork recovery software on a different post without any success.  Should I just remove the whole Office and reinstall from the disc?Reinstalling office will not solve any password problem.

If you don't mind I would like to ask couple of QUESTIONS to FIND out about your situation.

Are you connecting to a LAN mail server or to your ISP's POP server ?
If you have mail server in LAN then you can CHANGE the password on server side, that's the WORK around.......and if you POP server from your ISP then just give them a call, they will reset your password.

Cheers
thank you.

Solve : Can't remember my password for Windows XP?

Answer»

I guess old age is catching up (or may have already overtaken me) but I can't remember my password. I have tried hundreds, but just keep getting kicked out. The password "clue" never comes up either. I am at a complete and total loss as to how to get into my home computer. Any suggestions?
You can try to login in safe mode and resetting it.

Other than that I don't think you will find much help here with passwords.

 ::)please read......
If you forget the password to your XP user account, you may STILL be able to get back in. The easiest way is to use a password reset disk, but if you didn't create ONE, there's still hope:
1.   Log onto the computer with the administrator account (or have someone who has the administrator password perform these steps).
2.   Click Start | Run.
3.   In the Run box, type control userpasswords2
4.   Click OK.
5.   Click the user account for which you've forgotten the password.
6.   Click Reset Password.
7.   Enter a new password, confirm it, and click OK.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind before using this procedure. With XP Pro, you'll no longer to be able to access encrypted files or encrypted email messages. With XP Home, or with Pro in a workgroup, you'll need to boot into safe mode before logging on with the administrator account.
There are few ways to get around forgotten password.

I use Winternals Admin 2005 ( http://www.kickstartnews.com/reviews/network/winternals_admin_pak_5.html ) which makes the password resetting VERY simple.

second one in using a bootable Cd with the PROPER tools, for that you can get Hiren's boot cd from the following link:
http://soft.softoogle.com/ap/hiren-s-bootcd-download-6916.shtml

After booting your system with the CD, go to :Password Tools section and you could use either one of these tools:

1- Active Password Changer 3.0.420
To Reset User Password on windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista (FAT/NTFS)

2- Offline NT/2K/XP Password Changer
utility to reset windows nt/2000/xp administrator/user password.

3- NTPWD
utility to reset windows nt/2000/xp administrator/user password.

hope this helps

Solve : cannot open graphics files?

Answer»

I am running window xp on a e-mach t4010. All of a sudden I cannot open my Paintshop pro 8 files. The only thing I have done new is update Quicktime and that SEEMS to be when this happened. I use psp to edit all my graphics files and then convert to jpeg. I reinstalled psp8 hoping that it would re associate the files, uninstalled Quicktime, did a system restore back a month, all to no avail. The strange thing is that not all my files pix were affected. Within the same folder there are jpeg images that I can open, others that I cannot, that I used the same process to create. When I open my pix, the affected files are TITLED in black while the files I can open are in blue. I also cannot view the affected pix w/ movie maker, or any other graphics program. All the available file formats in psp8 have been checked. I have done nothing with the registry as of yet. Waiting for some ideas. If file TITLE is in blue it means the file is compressed and if it's black it means it's not compressed (Windows operating system does that to save storage space).

In regards to your graphic file.....you are in right track, file association might be messed up , since you have the PSP8 installed, couldn't you right click on the file and select "open with" and the browse for PSP8 and try to open it that way..Have you tried that? one last question, your graphic file -> do they have Windows GENERIC icon or any other (that's to verify the file association)

Cheers  All files that are unreadable have psp icon. Readeable files actually have the pix as icon. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the unaffected files. Again, I edited the same way. Some are from the internet, some are scanned images, some are images I created, some are from a digital camera, some are captured from dvd. I tried the "open with" and the only programs listed are psp8 & moviemaker. Before I removed Quicktime, I tried to open w/ QT pix viewer and got an unsupported file warning. I can open images from a cd, so the affected images are all in "my pictures" They are not locked or read-only files. The only other change has been adding nikon software for a camera my wife purchased, but that was some time AGO and did not affect anything when it was installed. Nothing will RECOGNIZE these files and I've had some of them for several years. I've been doing graphics on the pc for years and I've never run into anything like this.Download and install  IrfanView and install it.
See if it will handle those files...
It sounds like the file association got messed up but this shouldn't damage the images themselves.
They may need to be renamed with the proper extension but Irfanview also has a built in tool for this.can you send me one of those unimportant damaged file see if it behaves different on my PC.

CheersThanks for sending me the file......I installed PSP 12 (or X2) and seen the same result, sorry.

CheersI tried infraview to no avail. It could not read file or convert it. I just noticed when I look at file associations in psp8, the .psp file is greyed out. Though it is checked, I cannot uncheck it, or do anything else with it. It is as if it's been disabled. When I look at file associations in windows, .psp is there. Could there be a program that has blocked that file association? Quote

When I look at file associations in windows, .psp is there
Also grayed out?no...then change it there.

Solve : Cannot Burn CD's & CD-ROMS?

Answer»

I installed Windows XP on my computer several months ago.  I had problems trying to burn CD’s and CD-ROMs.  My Burner was out of date so I went out a couple of days ago and bought a new up to date one (LiteOn, CD-RW).  The computer recognizes it as a CD-RW and I can use it to read CD-ROMs with no problem.  I used the drag and drop to put files, both word and picture, in the Drive Window and hit the "Write these files to CD" and The CD Writing Wizard starts and works like it should and then suddenly gives me a error that says "Cannot complete the CD Writing Wizard There was an error in the writing process. The disk you have attempted to write may no longer be useable." and it stops.  There is nothing in the Event Viewer to show any problems.

I got a copy of NERO with the CD-RW and installed it and it does work to some extent as far as the music files go...more of a hit or miss thing…and it locks up a lot.  But as far as the picture files and word files they are on the CD but I can’t open most of them.  NERO keeps trying to get me to buy the upgrade but as far as I can see its not worth buying..not to mention I don’t have a credit card (had problems with Identity theft so refuse to use them)….    I am about to beat this dang thing with a hammer....

I have tried CHANGING the burning speed and have gone down to 1X and it still won't work.

How can I fix this problem?  Any help will be appreciated…thanks
Gomezy3k....So you installed the new cd drive and it has all the updated drivers......It reads ok but doesnt burn properly , is that right ?   You have Nero burning software installed ....which Nero ?

Not sure which the version that came with the CD-RW but it says its the NERO OEM Suite.  I went to the NERO site and downloaded the updates(NERO 6)...at least Package 1, 2, 3 & 4 again.  Back when I first installed the CD-RW I downloaded all 6 and FOUND that the Photo part sucked.  It was the basic version and you had to buy the full version to do anything.

Anyway, I went on the Windows Message board and was told to delete NERO so I did...still didn't work so am back trying the NERO program.  At least it sorta worked.  I want to clean up this computer and put a bunch of stuff on CD-ROM and Music CD's...You may need to work with the settings for your CDROM in BIOS or in Device Manager. If the DMA option is on, try setting it to PIO 4 (or switch off DMA) instead. If it's off, try setting it to DMA 2 or switching it on. Also try switching Synchronoous data on or off.

The NERO program should work to where you can build a data CD directory (less than 700MB) on your HD, then burn it directly to your CDR or CDRW. It will also have the ability to assemble various files from all over the HD to burn to CD. The prebuilt directory has fewer problems with buffer underrun/overrun errors.

Be sure you have your mainboard ATAPI/IDE driver package installed.I've been having the same problem, till this AFTERNOON.  I tried every TECHNIQUE I found online changing dma to pio only.  It did not work.  I uninstalling the driver.  It did not work.  I used roxio and Record Now.  It was a pain.  I wasted a bunch of cd's.  What an headace.   Well I downloaded http://www.cdburnerxp.se/.  It helped alot.   It was alot easier and it told me how much space I had left.  Plus it did not time me out.  I hope this helps.

The best  burner is nero 2008 ...........

If you want to change the speed  it can be possible in nero 2008
.......
If then also you can solve your problem ..then use another burner like alchol.. clone....
etc..

Solve : Wacky Computer!?

Answer»

Hey!

I have a compaq computer (not sure what type) running windows ME. The only PROBLEM is that the stupid computer isn't running.  I have tried various things (checking wires and stuff like that) and it is really getting on my nerves!
The weird thing is that after about 10 seconds of jigleing, i plug the power cord back into the computer, and it starts, for all of 3 seconds. Then after those 3 seconds, it shuts back down. And sometimes, it turns back on 5 seconds after that!
I don't know what to do!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If you're moving the power cord and the computer comes on sometimes, sounds like you need to replace that power cord and possibly the power supply.Ty Genius but i still had the same problem. And now I can only get it to turn on for abot 2 secondsbumpWhat are you "giggling"...on the inside or OUTSIDE of the box / tried a different wall outlet / tried a different power supply / stripped the machine except for the RAM, motherboard & video card & tried BOOTING?

Alan <><  My friend said that it may be a faulty power box, could this be the problem?YES...they have a safety switch to shut them down so yours could be shutting off your computerHave you checked to see if you've GOT the voltage on the PSU right? Quote from: Spoiler on March 26, 2008, 08:53:47 AM

yes...they have a safety switch to shut them down so yours could be shutting off your computer

How could I turn this off (If I can)You can't. Its built right into the power supply to shut it down. Its really so if you have a bad power supply it won't damage anything else in your computer or cause a fire.

If this is the reason your machine is shutting off than it is time to replace the power supply.

It sounds like you have a short in your power cord. Have you tried a different one?yes... i agree with spoiler it's time for a new power supply

Solve : MINIMUM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR WINDOWS XP AND VISTA?

Answer»

PROCESSOR

MEMORY

FREE HARD DISK SPACEWelcome to the CH forums.

Please stop shouting at us - turn off Capslock.

Remember these are the bare-bones minimum requirements and you shouldn't expect good performance from them especially if gaming.  e.g. recommend at least 1gb ram for XP and 2gb for Vista, the more you can afford the better performance you'll get.

Vista        XP

Good luckwant to know the minimum requirements onlyIt says on the website Dusty posted.

Windows Vista minimum supported SYSTEM requirements

Home Basic / Home Premium / Business / Ultimate

    * 20 GB hard DRIVE with at least 15 GB of available space

If not gaming, you can lower those numbers to 512MB and 1GB, especially the 512MB for XP, in my opinion.Heck, depending on the games, 512MB on XP is sometimes enough. Won't get the best performance or quality, but they'll run well enough to enjoy. Some less demanding games will run on a Pentium 4 running XP with only 256MB RAM with a 128MB video card (World of Warcraft, RainbowSix 3, and Tron 2.0 for example) on lower settings.

For just internet and such you don't need much. My mates shop here sells a Windows XP, P4 2.8, 256MB RAM, on-board video and sound, and 17" CRT monitor for about $300. Good for budget people.I have a 512MB RAM, 1.7GHz, 128MB Vdeo Card playing Halo PC on high detail.

Modern games (like within the last few years) are starting to require unbelievable amounts of computer resources *cough*Crysis*cough*. Stop playing with the poor guy!
IMHO:
XP - 512MB of RAM (good), separate video card with 128MB of RAM;  1GB of RAM (better), 128MB of RAM on-board video will work in this case
Vista - dual-core processor recommended, 2GB of RAM (no exceptions), and 256MB of RAM video card (on-board OK)
Hard drive size....depends...I wouldn't settle for anything less, then 200GBBTW...I THINK, displaying any link to some minimums listed by Micro$oft is just harmful.Absolute minimum recommendations are:

XP - 256MB RAM and 10GB hard drive.  Preferred is 20GB Hard drive.  Operational without waiting for STUFF to happen is 512MB ram and 40GB Hard drive, smooth operation = 1GB Ram and 40GB HDD plus.

Vista - 512MB Ram and 40GB Hard drive - Preferred is 1GB RAm and 60GB pluss hdd, Smooth sailing is 1.5GB ram and 60GB hdd more or less

If you are gaming, then apply video card specs as well as listed below.

If you are trying to decide to upgrade from win98 to XP or something... forget it, especially if you wish to have internet access!

This isn't necessarily true.  It just depends on the hardware specs.  Some machines running Win 98 may have 256MB or more of RAM and have plenty of hard drive space and a processor quite capable of running Win XP. Quote

Solve : Windows startup message question and help?

Answer»

When starting up my IBM Windows 98 system I get this message:  "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.  C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\ESUART.VXD"  I can continue the boot up by pressing the enter key, and the system seem to run fine.  It is just annoying because the system stops booting up everytime DUE to this message.  I've looked at the Microsoft page for this problem but nothing has corrected this so far.  Can someone offer a solution here?  Thanks in advance.Uninstall your modem, reboot, then reinstall your modem and reboot.

You may want to print this page before you start---->GoHere-For-A-GuideHmmm, looks very TECHIE.  If it doesn't solve my problem or opens a can or worms can I continue getting help?  Thanks  I do have a good Dell XPS system running here so I'm not completely in the dark.  I need the Win98 PC because a music program I use doesn't run correctly in WIN XP.You can always get help here friend. Do you use MagicSurfer56k modem to connect to the internet, or it just came with your computer, and you connect using some other ways? Thanks very much for the responses.  It's reassuring to know there is hope for what looks impossible.  I use a wireless card to connect to the internet, a Linksys card.  I was trying to free up space on my C: hard DRIVE when I thought I would uninstall the Modem that came with the PC.  I guess that's when I started getting the message I reported.  So do I need to go through the process described in the WinBook article to rectify the ISSUE?  Or is there a simpler solution?  I'll try anything.  As I stated, this is now my secondary PC.  My primary is a Dell XPS.  Nice!  Thanks Quote

Solve : Booting recovery console from floppy - would these commands work??

Answer»

Hello.

Quick question if I may - before I dive headlong into an ATTEMPTED system recovery:

I have a laptop running XP. I would like to boot Recovery Console from a USB floppy drive using the download Microsoft boot discs.

I would just like to check, and ask for your approval, of whether booting recovery console from the floppies, would the following recovery console commands to work?

Quote

Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Restart the computer from the CD-ROM drive.
Press R to start the Recovery Console when the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears.
Select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
Enter the administrator password and press Enter.
Type cd System
Press Enter
Type del ntos.exe
Press Enter
Type cd wsnpoem
Press Enter
Type del audio.dll
Press Enter
Type del video.dll
Press Enter
Type exit
Press Enter. The computer will now restart automatically.
(From this page.)

For background info, the reason for needing to run Recovery Console in this way, is because my system is infected with the ntos.exe virus, which my fully registered and up to date Zonealarm Security Suite did not recognise on entry and still doesn't identify on a full scan, and I am also in the unique and impoverished position of not having a functional CD-ROM drive in my laptop, and so am only ABLE to use a USB floppy drive!I dont know if you will be able to boot from the usb port/anyhting connected to it. newer computers have this option in bios but if your computer is more than a couple of years oldit PROB wont have it.

the other opetion is to replace the cd driveA couple? I have computers 4 and 5 years old and they have "enable legacy usb support" in the bios.

The BIOS on my machine definitely doesn't have the 'boot from external drive' option, but I certain it has the legacy usb driver support.

Is that not standard within the discovery console drivers PACKAGE?Another option would be to Clik Here  and have one of our Malware Removal Specialists have a looksee...Thanks for all the help, guys.

Solve : Computer won't boot up! PLEASE HELP !?

Answer»

Installed some drivers yesterday, the computer was working fine. I left for awhile, came back, it doesn't seem to boot up. Seems to cycle through checking drives, then nothing. Screen is black the whole time, except flashes analog then digital, back and forth. When I disconnect the display CABLE from the computer, monitor says I need to connect it, so it is getting some sort of SIGNAL from the CPU, but I don't know what.

OS is Windows XP service pack 2

Can someone please tell me if this is likely to be a video card problem, a hard drive problem, or a motherboard problem?try to boot into safe mode, and remove the drivers you installed (hold down f8 while booting). Will try it, don't know if I can do it, though, because, as I stated in my post, I can't seem to get any thing to come up on the monitor at all.

Also, if it doesn't work, any suggestions on what to do next?try another monitorYeah, I was afraid you'd say that. Can't try another monitor. The only other computer I have access to is the one I am using to post this problem, and it is a Mac laptop. I don't have any way to use another monitor, and I am unable to go get any cables that might allow me to connect the two. do you have a video card in your computer that plugs into a pci slot on the motherboard if so take that out and plug the monitor into the monitor plug which will be blue and see if that works if it does then we know it's your vid card. There is only one way to connect this monitor to the computer. It does appear to be a card that plugs into the motherboard. Do you mind explaining how removing this will help, I don't understand.sorry if I was clear on that if it's a video card that plugs into the motherboard in a pci slot it can be removed and then the monitor can be plugged into the on board video plug if the monitor works with on board video then we know it's the video card. I've uploading a pic of a motherboard for you to look at I know it's not your but it will give you a general IDEA what I'm talking about

[recovering SPACE - attachment deleted by admin]I don't see anything on the motherboard that looks like I can connect the monitor to it, just the video card.
please see attached pic also what kind of computer do you have? I don't know all the specs on this computer. It is custom built. I can tell you the motherboard is Gigabyte GA K8NSC-939, and on the front of the computer it has AMD Athlon 64.
In the pic you sent, there obviously IS an on board CRT port, but on the motherboard I have in front of me , there ISN'T, so I don't know what to do next.
okay that blows that theory out I think the only thing i can suggest is buy a new video card but before we do that what kind of drivers were you downloadin? the reason I asked is because you stated the computer was working fine until you installed those drivers rightEthernet controller drivers.okay right now i'm thinking software problem

Solve : Web page reloading error.?

Answer»

I have a 3 year old desktop computer with Windows XP Home Edition with SP3. I also have a GeForce 6200 graphic card INSTALLED. The problem that I am having, is that some web pages that I go to, sometimes will want to keep reloading, after I get a error bar, stating that there is a problem with the web page loading and then it wants to keep reloading several TIMES! I tried to remedy the problem, by running VARIOUS security scans, including AVG Internet Security 2011, Malwarebytes Anti Malware scans, Spybot Search & Destroy and Windows Malicious Software Remover! But, nothing seemed to remedy the problem! I am starting to think that the problem is deeper then just a security problem! I am going to try to run a registry check to see if there is any problems with my registry, but I kind of doubt it! If ANYONE has a suggestion, then I would CERTAINLY appreciate it! Thank you.

I would suggest you do not use a registry tool. They do more harm than good.

Which web browser do you use? Have you tried to clear the temp files? If you are using IE I would also suggest that you go into the tools and reset everything back you the default. If you still have the problem this would give us a place to start from.

Try to open those pages in different browsers, or reinstall those you are using right now and see if the problem still occurs after that.

PS. Sorry 4 my bad english.

I agree about the ram.

I disagree with msconfig. If you want to disable startup items use a dedicates utility such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Manager.About the RAM, depending on your current RAM configuration, buying a 1 GB stick and adding it to what ever you have got makes more sense and you will end up with over 1 GB of RAM.

Solve : color quality is stuck on 4 bit?

Answer»

Hello, for some reason my computer just turned off and when it turned back on, the display screen looks weird, when i checked the resolution, it is very low and the color quality was stuck on the 4 bit..a pop-up balloon will appear stating that the resolution and depth of my display is very low and to click it to adjust them automatically but still nothing changes..in fact, when i tried to adjust the resolution and color quality higher, the monitor will turn off and will not turn back on, the led light will turn from green to orange, it's like it is in sleep mode...badly need HELP..tried system restore to no avail, i even went to safe mode and tried disabling the startup/services from the system config but still no help...at FIRST, when starting the computer, the monitor will turn on normally and will display the normal windows startup ( with the windows logo.etc..), right after that, the led will change from green to orange from the monitor and the screen is black, however i know the system is still running..good thing right now, i was able to load windows normally right after windows startup, the only problem that remains is the color quality...if i attempt to change it to higher quality, the first problem will occur again..badly need help...thanks in advance..Reinstall video driver. The reason that you led screen changed from green to orange is that the monitor can display that resolution.

You can change the resolution screen to 1024*768 for example, and change the color quality to 32 bits.

If you screen go black and you can't see the desktop, so restart the computer, press F8 and in the menu that will display select VGA Mode
and change the resolution.

If the problem continue, reinstall video drivers.

esvom.hi guys..thanks for the reply...i tried reinstalling the video card driver and the same problem occur...tried VGA mode and safe mode even did system restore to no avail..good thing it was fix now, i just took the PCI video card from the unit and turned on the computer and it works!! my pc has a built-in video card so i think it's fine that way, anyway i will only use it for surfing the net and PLAYING music and other small APPLICATION..it seems that the video card has GONE bad coz when i tried to plug it back and attached it to the computer, the same problem occur and works when i took it out...Yeah, it looks like new video card is in order....Try this:
Start - Run - Regedit

Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ desktop \ WindowMetrics

On the right side look for the value: Shell Icon BPP

Double-clcik on it and set the value to 16
Reboot

Solve : blue screen before i can format xp pro?

Answer»

i just bought a ASUS p5g41t-mlx motherboard with a PENTIUM E5400 2.7GHz dual core processor and a hard drive, when starting up with windows xp cd in, it goes to through the initial setup and is about to restart the comp when i get a blue screen(this is before i get to make a partition)

i only have 1 ide port, i have the hard drive as master with black end plugged in(end of ide CABLE) and the dvd drive with the gray end(middle of ide cable)

this is basically my blue screen message

problem detected windows shut down to prevent comp damage
check for adequate DISK space. if a driver is identified in stop message disable it or check for updates,
TRY CHANGING video adapters

check for bios update. disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. Start in
safe mode to remove or disable components

You delete and create partitions in windows setup before it needs to restart.
How far do you get into the install before this happens?
Do you see the "welcome to setup" screen?oh, well it does the initial setup for maybe 4 to5 mins and blue screens before it gets to any options, like delete partition, create new partition, i dont remember the others that are usually thereis it ok to be running both the hard drive and dvd drive on the same ide port

Have you checked the jumpers on the drives?
Are you using onboard video?
You might also want to check your RAM. Give memtest a shot http://www.memtest.org/#downisoi tried with a video card and onboard video, can i use memtest without an OS installedYes.

Please is there anything to do when i change the booting from hard disk to CD.. And my system does'nt come up all, It only bring erro messagesYou need to provide a lot more details - not REALLY sure what you are asking. Why reason do you WANT to BOOT from your CD?
What say the error messages?

If you want to install a OS make sure that the INSTALLATION CD is ok.

If you want to enter to an alredy installed OS, try booting only from hard disk.
