Solve : Windows XP won't reboot after XP CD repair?

Answer»

Hey guys and gals, got a question...

My MS support contact advised me to use the Operating System Cd...Microsoft Windows
XP Pro SP3 to repair my system...

Everything went well on the CD install until it rebooted...

Now I'm looking at a black screen that STATES "We apologize for the inconvinience, but
Windows did not start successfully..."

The screen with the 'Start Windows Normally, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking...etc" and the 30 sec COUNTDOWN...

And this cycles endlessly. I've tried all the options etc yet to no avail...
And the only way to shut down in manually turn off...

This has me totally puzzled...

System Info...

Computer Manu: Dell
Computer Model: Precision Work Station 360
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHZ
Motherboard: Dell OW2563
Phy Ram: 2.37 GB
OS Name: Win XP Pro SP3 (build 2600) x86

Any ideas would be appreciated...(haven't heard back from my ms contact in days)...
so I'm a little irritated...

Thanks,
Nile
Exactly HOW did you repair the system (step by step)?Ok, I did the PARALELL reinstall on windows xp...and all went well...
except for no Internet access...

Found out that these reinstalls, you end up with ie6 since I did have ie7.
So I installed ie7. no results...

Doing a little more research, I ended up in Device Manager...
All looked good except for Yellow? = other DEVICES...?ethernet controller...?muti-
media audio controller...
All three yellow
So I guess these are drivers I need.
You have any idea of how to get the right ones...I'll have to download to
another computer and slap on a cd...

Thanks
Travel to Dells site and enter your service tag #....your drivers will be listed.
Chipset drivers go 1st...That's what I did, I DECIDED to read up on 'fresh clean installs' and went ahead with it...
Thanks everyone for your help...

Solve : Can't boot up nor connect to CD rom drive!?

Answer»

Hi All

Hope you can help me!

I've an old windows XP Compaq tablet t1000 running on Transmeta Crusoe and it wouldn't boot up.  I keeping an error message that it can't start \windows\system\config\system and press R to RETRY, which just provides the same error message.

I've attached my external CD ROM player using USB and the system will automatically try to boot up from my recovery disks 1 (I've full set of windows xp tablet discs).   I get an error message saying it can't find the ATAPI IDE CD ROM driver and disables the USB drive.

I can access the c:\> on pressing esc button.   But I don't know what to do.  I've TRIED searching the internet (hence I am here) for help and find I need to edit the autoexec.bat and config.sys files but edit COMMAND is not recognised.  (My knowledge of ms dos command is very limited, mostly forgotten and gain from using P2 computers.)

What can I do to reboot my tablet?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

RebootThanks Allen.   However, I can't get the system to acknowledge my external CD ROM player - error message "Failed to load USB Storage device".  Hence, I can't to the recovery console.

Solve : Persistent or Recurring Registry Errors?

Answer»

Hello!

I am running an XP SP3 platform and routinely run AML Registry Cleaner. It removes or fixes approx. 150 - 250 Registry errors, mainly 'Invalid Paths' and 'No Association'. Now, if I run another scan within the hour, I'll get another 150 errors easily, not exactly the same.

What could be causing this? and is there a way of correcting these short of reinstalling all the installed programs?

Thanks!AML Registry Cleaner is a rogue program. will you help me to canvas for my mboard x58 super computerThanks for the replies, but I am a bit perplexed.

To reply #1 [BC_Programmer], what is MEANT exactly by a "AML Registry Cleaner is a rogue program." Does it introduce problems into the system, is it malicious, is it INEFFECTIVE, ..., etc? could you explain.

To reply #2 [4ngel of death], what is the relevance of your reply to the question asked, am I missing SOMETHING ?

Thanks again!A rouge program is a program that TELLS you that you have errors or viruses and then persuades you to PAY for the software to remove it when you don't really need it.

4ngel of death's replay is not relevant. He is just hijacking your thread.Registry tools are not recommended and here is why: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/registry-cleaners-and-system-tweaking_13.html

Solve : XP portable with no admin account?

Answer»

My wife has an Acer Travelmate C310 which has been idle for a while.  Now we want to start using it again and add some new SOFTWARE, but it SEEMS that there is no account with admin privileges.

The curious details are these:  The logon screen displays only one possible account, “NAME_2”  where NAME is my wife’s first and last names and this is followed by the “_2”  I am able to type in the password and bring up Windows.  When I go to User Accounts, this account is the only account listed, and it is listed as “NAME” without the “_2”, and it is a Limited Account, no admin privileges.

I have tried booting into Safe Mode, but when I do, the logon screen offers only “NAME” as an account choice, no “Administrator” account, and ALSO not “NAME_2” as appears in the standard boot up logon dialog.  However, the account “NAME” accepts the password for “NAME_2”, so I can boot up in Safe Mode just as I can in standard mode.

So the important question is, with what I have to work with, is there a WAY to create an admin account.  A secondary question is, why is the account name displayed in the standard logon dialog different from the one in the Safe Mode logon dialog and in User Accounts?

Thank you for any thoughts.

Regards,

Davidmcb
Here is the user guide in PDF.

Is it running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005? If so, you should  have made that that clear in you first post. It is not the same as XP that comes on typical laptop PCS.

Please look over the manual.

I have made my CD/DVD Drive not show up before. It was because I was using daemon tools and it somehow got rid of the data to detect it. My CD drive did even run. (as if it were broke) But i did a simple system restore and it fixed it. Im not sure why it happend. I continue to run daemon tools and everything work fine.

But how in the heck does this happen?

Allan do you know?now here is the problem i can't run a system restore because it is more than a year since it happened and i don't really think i can't go back that far Do you have the computer there with you? It's gonna be really difficult to try to trouble this one if he has to tell you, then you tell us, then we tell you, then you tell him. See what I'm saying?i don't have it right now but i will be back in atleast 30 minutes or less i'll post a message when i returni am back i got the computer up and runningOkay. First let's make absolutely sure that there isn't a system restore point. Click start then all programs then accesories then system tools then system restore. Choose restore my computer to an earlier date and see if there are any recent system restore points. okay there is some system restore pointsWell, if there is a recent one (less than a month old or so) try a restore. this cd/dvd missing thing happened more than six months ago i really don't think a system restore will be ABLE to help You say he did a disk cleanup. Do you happen to know what program he used or what he did? Does the drive open and close? Have you checked BIOS to make sure that the drive shows up there? Can you hook that computer up to the INTERNET?He said he used the disk clean that came with the computer he checked all the boxes and clicked clean up, yes it does open and close and EVE the lights go on LIKE if it was trying to read it, i still need to check the bios, and i don't think i can hook it up to the internet right now

Solve : Google as default search engine?

Answer»

To MAKE a long story short, I had to reformat my hard drive. When I finished, Microsoft updates automatically upgraded the version of Internet Explorer that was on my computer and when I went to use it I discovered that Bing was the default search engine in the upper right corner of my BROWSER instead of Google.  I've never encountered this issue before. How do I change it back to Google? I don't like Bing.
Thanks To remove bing (I know it says windows 7, but it should work for xp)

Then to install google search bar:

That's not "it". He's not asking about his home page.

To make Google as your default search engine do as following:
First go to Tools menu on your Internet Explorer, click on Manage Add-ons..., on the left pane click on Search Providers, than on the right pane you will see the name bing, go in the left down corner and click on Find more search providers... find the Google Search Suggestions and click in Add to Internet Explorer, after that close the Manage Add-ons window and Open it again, go to Search Providers, right click on Google and chose Set as default, than right click on bing and click Remove. At the end click on Close and restart your browser.
This is it.
Cheers. Quote from: dr_iton on October 16, 2010, 07:25:38 AM

Solve : Stop code?

Hello, I am having a problem with windows  XP.  When I turn on my PC I get Stop 0x000000ED(0x8239C900,0xx0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000) !!WHAT IS THIS!!. Thank you in advance for your help. What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, reinstallation of the OS, virus, error, etc)? Some windows files COULD be corrupted , after you installed a new program or delete some of them from mistake or even if you removed a program (i had this trouble with SQL SERVER 2005) , also could be the action of a virus.

What i did was to go in Safe Mode and from there choose a system restore from most recently version that worked, and everything was again ok . Ignore the above post for the time being. Hi Allan ,

Please tell me why my post should be ignored, i guess that i give a QUICK solution for his problem.

May be he even do not remember what he did last time when shut down the pc , or is just interested to be able to use the Windows again and how GOOD is the solution it does not matter , or may be never will be back in this post because already found a solution.

I say this because i think that people (users) usually looks for quick solutions and they do not look for how "good" it is. (only those how afford this may be  , usually very few of them )

Now i am going to sleep but tomorrow i will be online again (hope : ) ).

Thanks and REGARDS,

1) Your first post doesn't say anything that makes sense in the first paragraph.
2) System Restore may or may not help, but it's unlikely with this particular error code. I sincerely doubt that you recovered from an ED (unmountable boot volume) error with system restore.
3) We need an answer to the question(s) in my first post before we can provide intelligent input.Ok.

Thanks. There was a game on cd that was played on the PC. I am unable to go to F12,F2. Try a PS2 keyboard...power down before switching them out...You may have hard drive problem...

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

Solve : Windows XP error (SP3) Ram 2GB?

Answer»

I am trying to run an APPLICATION but I get the following ERROR message :

CAN'T RUN 16-BIT WINDOWS PROGRAM

INSUFFICIENT MEMORY TO RUN THIS APPLICATION.

QUIT ONE OR MORE WINDOWS APPLICATIONS AND THEN TRY AGAIN

I have tried to find a reply to this problem but I did not manage to find one.Is it only this one app with which you are having problems? Is your system displaying any other issues?Everything else is working OK. I tried to use the COMPATIBILITY button under Properties but without success. The application is supposed to work in Windows XP.

ThanksDo all 16 bit apps give you that error?
Are you running 64 bit XP?With the compatibility box checked, try right-clicking on the app's icon and then "run as administrator". It may or may not work, but it can't hurt.As JJ3000 said, if your running a 64bit OS your'll never get a 16bit application to run (they won't work together).

The file might be corrupted and memory leaking if your using WinXP 32bit, you might NEED to download another one or re-install.Thanks all for your help and advice which I will try to IMPLEMENT.  I have Windows XP32 bit. What exactly is this program?

Solve : Driver for Usb device - Nokia phone?

Answer»

I recently bought a new (used) mobile, I use my mobile to take PHOTOS and am trying to get photos taken, onto pc.

I have found that my old usb cord for old phone can plug into new phone, although the comp says it doesnt recognise the device, that there is not a driver to support it.

The cord used to work with no probs with old phone, but that was on another pc??

I tried to look for driver? currently i am scanning comp with driver detective?  My phone is a nokia 7230.
And comp is a DELL Optiplex GX620I'm guessing you're not in the US, as the US site doesn't list that model, but the European site does. Follow the link and download the Nokia Ovi Suite 2.2.

http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/nokia-ovi-suite/compatibility-and-downloadThanx for the quick reply

I am in australia, does that matter?

Interesting, the European site directed me to download Ovi, but the Australian site suggests either Ovi or the PC Suite.

http://www.nokia.com.au/support/download-software/nokia-pc-suites/compatibility-and-download

You'll have to decide which ONE has the features you need and want. I believe the PC Suite does the basic CONNECTIVITY stuff and the Ovi Suite doesn't a lot of extra stuff. I'm not familiar with either, so I can't say for sure.Im downloading ovi suite, reckons its going to take about 5 hours, prob my internet, coz its a little stormy here today.

No uploading for me today thanx il let you know how it goes

Solve : Why would I change my hosts file??

Answer»

I've seen a few REFERENCES to changing the hosts file, but what is the purpose of doing that?  Just wondering...Some info at Blocking Websites Using the Windows Hosts FileYou might want to download and use SpywareBlaster - I recommend it to everyone. There are various software apps that TRY to "phone HOME" for different reasons. If you wish to protect your privacy you can blacklist that site in your HOSTS file.

The Hosts file is a USED by Microsoft Windows as his DNS.

If you modify that file you can blocked websites or redirect websites.

Solve : Cannot run in safe mode?

Answer»

I have a laptop that is displaying the BSOD stop error oxoooooo7e. I have gone through the repair function with Win XP Pro disc and still get the error. I cannot boot in the safe mode. I can get the DOS prompt so I ran CHKDSK /r and let it run for an hour or two and it came back with everything OK. Is there anything I can do from the DOS prompt that might help?  I have things backed up so I am guessing the next thing might be a clean reinstall but I would have to reinstall all programs and most drivers-I think- and this is not fun.
Thanks much!
1) What dos prompt? How are you getting to a dos prompt?
2) Here is how you are supposed to handle a 7E error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182Allan, Thanks for the LINK
Important information for the rest of us.
Now if he will also thank you, it will hit 600.      Nice work!I enter the recovery mode by booting with the Win XP disc-then choose to repair using the "revcoery console' then it finds my Winxp and then I enter the password then I can access the DOS prompt and run the chkdsk from there but upon rebooting, I still get the stop error.
ThanksOkay. I ASK because when you run chkdsk /r from the recovery console it NEVER reports that "everything is ok". It always says it found and repaired one or more errors.

EXACTLY when Do you get the blue screen error?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, etc)?Just posted a reply before your suggestion. I found the MS help for this error before but I cannot get to a point to use the suggestions in that link.
I was not in front of the computer when it finished chkdsk (since it took a long time)-I just assumed it fixed any errors.  This problem occured about the same time I updated the computer with lastest MS updates but it WAS working after that but very very slow so I tried the repair via booting with the XP disc and went thought the repair (NOT recovery console). It was then that I got the stop message and I have not been able to boot to WINDOWS nor to the safe mood since then. I can get the BIOS screen and the DOS prompt but still get the stop error when rebooting XP -thanks for your comments -any help will be appreciated. If I cannot get things fixed soon , I will do a clean reinstall and hope that works. Note: I have no external devices-all internal.  I do use at time a USB wireless but it was not hooked up during the rebooting.Let me see if I understand. You can boot to the XP CD. Then you choose the SECOND repair option and try to start a repair install - is that correct? If so, at what point do you get the blue screen error?

You mean OS - Win XP SP3.Reinstall. Disconnect all external drives before installing.you may want to read this link from the microsoft website as well.

There's no need to make this complicated. If an external drive is connected when the OS is INSTALLED it will be the c: drive. You need to start from scratch with no external drives connected. Quote from: Allan on October 20, 2010, 12:36:51 PM

so Parry,

1. remove the card reader

2. reinstall the OS

3. reattach the card reader back as it was before

4. use your computer as normal.

I guess it doesn't matter whether you call it EXTERNAL or INTERNAL, but the thing is, it's a removable device. I guess INTERNAL just meant it's hidden under the computer's case instead of sitting on your desk or such in plain view.

I suppose we've gone far enough on this TOPIC until Parry comes back and tells us how it went. Thanks 2x3i5x, Allan & Computer_Commando for your replies & debate.

That was one suspicion I had, but was not sure. Will try out as per your suggestions & revert. So let me get this right... you just want to change the drive letters around? No need to friggen remove / format anything!

Go to Disk Management
Ensure you have Administrator rights.
Click Start > Control Panel > 'Performance and Maintenance'.
Click Administrative Tools > Computer Management, and then click 'Disk Management' in the left pane.

Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click Change. Pick a drive letter. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change.

You can swap them around to whatever you want. Under the BIOS you can setup the boot order too if needed.Buddy, just STARTED the format.

You cannot change the system drive designation in this manner. Aside from the rude language in your post, it would be nice if you knew what you were talking about just once.

Solve : Signed ActiveX cab installer, blocked by Windows XP??

Answer»

I'm wondering if any of you know how Windows determines if an activeX is signed by a trust worthy certificate or not. This is an annoying work related question I haven't been able to figure out. We have a website that installs two different CAB FILES onto client machines, on the client machine we add our site to trusted site zone and enable download Signed ActiveX, this has worked on 99.99% of clients until this week. One client for whatever reason is blocking this file. To make sure the website developers hadn't changed ANYTHING I retested and Windows XP and 7 installs them fine as if they are signed internally and on the external site.

I'm wondering if there is some Windows XP setting that would block windows from knowing if a CAB is signed/trusted that anyone has run into? Everything on the INTERNET I have found basically says temporarily ALLOW your security to install an unsigned activex control ... it is signed so I don't want this to be the perm solution.

Solve : boting up in my.yahoo.com?

Windows XP home. PC is Dell Optplex 520. Using IE8. PC internet options for home page is www.my.yahoo.com.
Have been using my e-mail [email protected] as ID. Never have had a problem opening in my yahoo.
Now yahoo does not recognize  my joycesan1 account. If I [email protected] it will accept this ID. Entering PASSWORD takes me to yahoo.com, not my.yahoo.com.

email addys removed to PREVENT SPAM.You'll have to contact Yahoo for that one...Try to manually type into the address bar http://my.yahoo.com. You should be directed there as logging to Yahoo.com logs you in to the whole Yahoo network (Mail, sports, and My Yahoo.) If this does not work, try contacting Yahoo with your problem, and they should be ABLE to assist from there.

Solve : moitor connection error message?

Answer»

My daughter's emachine is 6 years old with auto updates, it is using windows XP home media operating system. Recently when she goes to boot up the computer, the monitor will SHOW the emachine logo and then as it goes to boot up windows it gives her an error message that says there is no connection to the monitor. If you go to bot under safemode the monitor shows all COMMANDS until it starts the boot up and then gives the same error mesage. Is this a driver error and how do I update it without reloading her operating system and having to wipe her hard drive clean?Well since you can still use safemode? try this...

Bootup in Safe Mode.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > 'Command Prompt' – right click and Select Run as 'Administrator'.

Type or copy the command:
Code: [Select]SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1This forces the invisible old drivers to reveal themselves in the device manager (optional).

Type or copy the command:
Code: [Select]devmgmt.mscThis will open the device manager.

In the Device Manager, go to View – enable Show hidden devices.
From the list, right click on the inactive device you WISH to remove and select Uninstall to remove the driver (this will help clean up).

Look for any unknown devices (YELLOW question-mark).

Find under 'Display Adapters' your graphic driver and 'Monitors' the display drivers - uninstall them.

Windows will then attempt to reinstall the drivers again, reboot and see if you can now install the correct graphics driver.

Solve : Oooops! Friend does not hate me yet?

Answer»

I screwed up a friend's XP pro and when using F8 key after F8 I select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Then as follows get a list of files which after a short time screen turns into a dialog box with sign-in and password. Just go through that and a new screen comes up with several lines the last being C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>. At the sign '>' you type dir you get a list of about five lines-directories. If you type 'command' you get not recognized as a system command.
???How can I get back to a point where I can restore the system I screwed up? How do I get to restoreing or recovering his WINDOWS?
Thank-you
debo.1. Can you BOOT to windows normally?

2. If not, can you boot to windows via safe mode (either the normal or the one with networking)?

If you can, you might try the system restore if there's restore points available.Tell us the ENTIRE story. What HAPPENED?You should just be able to RESTART the computer if you're stuck in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt."  Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.  If that doesn't work, then hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, and then turn it back on.

If this is FIRST time .......................if screen APPEARS again, follow these steps.

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed Hard Drive or Hard Drive controllers. Check your Hard Drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for Hard Drive corruption and then restart your computer.

Solve : xp pro scannow CD have sp 3 now?

Answer»

Hello:
Did some research on here and found information about (running sfc/scannow) that when asked to insert my xp pro CD that I should have the up-to-date version of SP 3, my original cd is sp 2 version 2002. HELP is it okay to just put in my original xp pro CD when scannow asks me too?
See Here...
all that to run 'scannow'?I'm not sure what your asking...scannow will only run with whatever SP you have installed...it's a Windows thing not mine...
If you don't have the CURRENT SP's installed it will give you the error message you saw.
I offered a SOLUTION...don't shoot the messenger.

Best of Luck.lol i would never shoot you lol  you are much too important don't you know?
Okay, sry, from the beginning.  When I'm about to run scannow it asks for my xp CD which I have.  But the CD is sp 2.  I have updated my xp to sp3.  I haven't run it with it because i read on here i need an updated CD pro with sp3 in order to do that.  You just told me that is that case, is that correct.  AND I can't therefore run scannow                                                         tyvm for any help really and truly Those instructions are for how to create one...

You could always borrow 1 though if you find it...I saw somewhere to download just xp pro sp 3  then maybe to try it  when asked to insert my CD.  The other THOUGHT was that my download of sp3 may have damaged, etc. files.  Don't know anyone to borrow from. sryAll you needed to do was follow the guide i posted...DLoad SP3 and slipstream it into your Legit SP2 XP CD...
Grabbing an XP SP3 download is a really bad idea...

20 minutes Tops...not ready to reinstall windows and/or take a chance the streamlining won't work :p tyvm  Just can't do 'scannow'
tyThe Guide linked to is from a Microsoft MVPS...they don't give that title out to just anyone...
Other than following the guide then finding an XP CD including SP3 would be your 2nd best bet...Thank you, I'll have to live without 'scannow'.  tyvm

Have you done the second part of what patio asked you?Or hold down the CTRL key and use the mouse scroll wheel up/down...

Nothing happens when I do this on the main screen.Non of your problems are usually attributed to 'placing' something on the keyboard if you cannot solve them with what we have provided.
Can there be something else you have done?

Solve : XP install nightmare?

Answer»

My tale of WOE........
I have Dell XPS, and recently bought a new WD hd from dell, downloaded the intel raid driver again from dell, saved it to a floppy. Run setup to install xp on new hd, hit f6 install the raid driver...I then get an error that the iaStor.sys could not install error 4107 at line 2108 in  d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c

My bios does not seem to have a autodetect/raid or anything else. All I can find is SATA on/off.....
The only info I can find about the iaStor.sys file is virus related, but with a new hd that seems out.

Dell is completely useless on this matter, it seems they have their MONEY and screw our 6 year customer. I would get a new computer and throw this POS through the nearest Dell Store front window, unfortunately I am not in a financial position to do so.....

Please help!

Solve : Useing Epson Smart Panel with Microsoft Outlook?

Answer»

I want to program my Epson Smart Panel to work with Microsoft Outlook.  When I try to scan something to email the only choice I am given is Outlook Express 6.0 which I deleted when I received Microsoft Outlook.  I know I probably need to enter the path manually as I've tried the reset feature and that doesn't give me anything but a logo of Outlook Express 6 which I no longer have.  I do a search for Microsoft Outlook and only come up with the shortcuts.  How do I FIND out where Microsoft Outlook is located so I can type in the proper path or is there an easier way.  ThanksIf you removed Outlook Express, you will have to reinstall it.Thanks for trying but I don't want to use Outlook Express any longer but want to use Microsoft Outlook; the ONE that comes with Microsoft Office 2000.  Epson smart panel TELLS me I can do this but how do I get it to appear in the menu of Epson Smart Panel.  Thanks Quote

How do I find out where Microsoft Outlook is located so I can type in the proper path or is there an easier way

The Outlook EXECUTABLE is Outlook.exe. Do a search to find out where it is installed.

Stop wasting our TIME and DONATE the computer to a school.Dizzle:

Use the boot disk as M_2 instructed.

If the Windows XP setup does not start, type this at the command PROMPT:

[size=18]d:\i386\winnt.exe[/size]

This should begin the installation of Windows XP.  Let us know if it does not.

We have answered this question, and it is possible that you have created a partition that is only 32 GB.  By starting the Windows XP setup, you may delete this 32 GB partition and create the 60 GB partition that you want.

If we have misunderstood you, please let us know.

Solve : Printin options changed?

Answer»

I recently installed a new hard DRIVE.  Everything is fine, except the printing options layout is different.  Before it used to have an OPTION for double-sided printing, and it had the spaceship to HELP adjust the colour.  But that has now changed.  The spaceship doesn't even come up anymore.

It is not the drivers.  I had this problem last year, and for the life of me can't remember what it was...LOL.  But I do know it is something really simple.

I had Windows xp on both the old and new hard drive and the printer is the same.

Please help.  It's driving me quite nutty. Did you re-install the printer software, not just the drivers? No I didn't reinstall the printer software.  Unfortunately I can't find the disk.nefrett.....I'm thinking you need the printer software as Fed has suggested....so have another look for the disk or visit your PRINTERS makers website ...there may be the software there ......or as a temporary work around .......turn the page over and manually print the second side .

dl65  Is the software for the printer  still on the old hard drive!transfer it across.I tried transferring it across from the old hard drive initially, but it didn't seem to work.

But all fixed now.  I went to the HP website and they have a great program that checks what you have and recommends any updates/downloads you need.  It even install it all nicely on your system.

I have my spaceship back.  "Yay"

Thanks for all your help.  You guys rock.Any chance of a lift to ion.......

Solve : WinXP won't execute Stetup.exe from floppy disk?

Answer»

I'm trying to install "Managing your Money Windows 1994 version" from a USB external floppy disk on my Gateway 3.4GHz system. When executing via control panel->add software or via the start->run windows everything appears to be normal. After hitting "OK" nothing executes and no ERROR messages appear. The floppy disk does nothing as if it was not there. Is there a compatibility problem between some older setup progs and the USB floppy interface? Quote

Is there a compatibility problem between some older setup progs and the USB floppy interface?
"

I doubt such a thing exists.

Have you tried other diskettes?Other disk work fine for document or picture files. I have another "HOME Office Accounting" program which does the same thing when using it's "install.com"...I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way the setup and install programs were written before USB ports. Both these applications came out during Win 3.1.Does the diskette work in a 'normal' FDD?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/appcompat.mspxThanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions...I received an email from the Andrew Tobias website instructing me to copy the files from the floppy disks to a folder on my hard drive called "mym12" and then run the setup.exe. This worked perfectly, so I must assume the setup prog is not compatible with an external USB fdd. That I attribute to Gateway who no longer supplies fdds with their new systems. If I had known that up FRONT I probably would have purchased from a DIFFERENT vendor. I still have many floppy files from over the years that I have no intension of spending time copying to another type media.
To answer some of the other responses, "I did not have another system with an interna fdd to try that solution."
I used the copy method before receiving the compatiblilty mode suggestion. If I get a chance I'll try that on a laptop I plan to purchase.
Again, many thanks to all.dolphin.....you might wish to consider installing a internal floppy in your Gateway ....I'm sure there is room for it and floppy drives are cheap.

Solve : Win ME Virus problem in C:\_Restore\Archive?

Answer»

McAfee has found adware programs contained in several FS***.CAB files in C:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVE, and unfortunately these files are write protected.  While I suspect these files are restore points created by Win ME, I'd like to delete them, or at LEAST turn off the write protection so McAfee can CLEAN them.  I've tried the ATTRIB command with no success.  Any suggestions?Disable system restore and rescan in SAFE mode.

Once the virus is removed, you can SAFELY reinitialize system restore.Dump mcfee........use anti-virus personal edition from majorgeeks.com free........do use nav or any other but what i advise also disabled system restore for good.....its not needed.....mem /disk hogger/and the virus vault of *censored*!It might not be a virus?!

i use norton...lol

I look at other computers, and its almost instantaneous. why?CPU maybe ......or background SERVICES......virus/trojans/worms.........scan for them......to make sure.....it not that.....
run a diagnostics TEST >>>http://www.active-hardware.com/english/misc/sandra.html
Raymond:

Another possibility: Your antivirus software is doing a throught job of scanning the file during the extraction.

Solve : recurring items in "startup" of MSConfig?

Answer»

I have 2 things that keep returning to the "startup" list in MSConfig: "EnsoniqMixer starter.exe" and "sp RUNDLL32 c:\windows\\se.dll,DllInstall" The first has something to do with sound and is annoying only because it TAKES up system resources. I'm not sure what the second is for, but the folder keeps changing every time I delete the dll file named.

Any suggestions?Virus, Spy/Adware Scan!!

google the se.dll file also...it says it's a hijacker.  get hijackthis and see if it works. Quote

"EnsoniqMixer starter.exe"

This seems to be legit. What type of SOUNDCARD and drivers are installed?

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more CONFIGURATION options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker. Use the Search >>for the dll......and when you find it .....right click on it.....then properties.....what does it say? This:

Here's the low down on starter.exe:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/starter/index.php

Raptor is correct; it is legit.

And here is the scoop on se.dll:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/se/index.php

Maragtas is correct; it's spyware and should be removed.

Hope that helps,
DocI already knew that Starter.exe was legit, I just don't want it running because the games I play need all the memory I can give them.

As for SE.dll, telling me to remove it doesn't help because it keeps re-creating itself in new folders every time I delete it.

What I really need to know is how to keep the damned line in MSConfig from re-forming.
Then you should use the tools I provided you with.

If your system is open to spyware, you're not using the system half as efficiently as you think you are.Download hi-jack this >>>http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html  and remove it........or create a new folder and drag and drop it in there ......then delete it and re-boot pc.
....What operating system win98? is it.Try Spyware Doctor and see if you can find all of the elements of se.dll and remove them manually.Arokthis:

My favorite spyware remover (and one i've been using for years now and am pleased with the RESULTS) is Ad-Aware.  It's available as an absolutely free for personal use download here:
