Solve : floppy disk capacity?

can one increase the capacity of a floppy disk by two fold by using some(i dont  know)utilities provided by windows itself

Only by data compression.

If you find a WAY to OVERCLOCK a floppy drive, let us know. There may be a market for floppy disk drive coolers.A 1.44MB floppy can hold just that...1.44MB. Compacting data eliminates repeating data allowing a file to take up less space than NORMAL but you can still only get 1.44MB of data on the floppy.

Didn't some drives use 2.88MB floppies? Just ASKING...Maybe. If it's Double Density. I've heard about those.Double density is actually 720Kb (Or something in that manner) High density is 1.44MB.

Quote
...Didn't some drives use 2.88MB floppies? Just asking...

Yes.  From: COMPUTER HARDWARE
.5" Double Density - 720KB
3.5" High Density - 1.44MB
3.5" Extended Density (IBM ONLY) - 2.88MB

And some were 120MB.  I have one but no DISKS.  It reads and writes 1.44MB, also.  It's a SuperDisk LS-120.

Solve : product number or ID.?

Answer»

Hi!
I have a computer with XP Pro, and do not have a OS disk, I just recently purchase one and would like to
to install some files that I need to use.
My problem is the Product number. The product number is different from the newly purchase OS disk with the XP Pro that I have in my computer that I am using now.
I cannot use the NEW OS disk, and I get an error MESSAGE stateing that XP disk cannot be used becuse the product number does not match.
Does anyone know how I can change the product number in my computer to the new OS disk product number.  I really need HELP with this!!!
As far as I know - the product number goes in when the OS is installed.  The only true way to do it would be to re-install XP pro using the disc.  But, if you just want the files, can't you copy them into the other system?Format the drive with a win98 boot disk and re-load the WINXP pro...... itf its a full install disk ,if  its an upgrade disk then you have a problem! You might have to save all of your files to a CD or Floppy, Format the HD, and then Install Prorrnbcas...... I must have missed something .......you say you have Win XP pro installed and I assume working ........and yet you have purchased another Win XP Pro .......   I find that a bit odd unless theres something you neglected to include in your post .......

However , it is POSSIBLE to use a key recovery program to retreive your key from your pc .......

Solve : slow connection help!!!!1?

I am not really understanding your problem...

However...with my own experience with modems...

1.  If it is slow, it probably need a new driver
2.  If you are using it during a storm, get d/c and try again for a week and it won't work...you probably need a new one.

Raptor,

I think he said that he is using his Dad's computer (using the same connection he is trying) to ask us about his problem.  He said that his dad's computer has no problems connecting, but HIS does...  Allow me to verify.  I am using my dads computer to talk to you.  That proves the internet connection is good.  I could not have loaded a virus in the time I have been on.  I had Windows xp but the harddrive crashed and I didn't have a disc for xp so i bought a new harddrive and loaded windows 98.  My modem worked in xp.  But it doesn't work in windows 98 or linux(which i also have loaded now).  So i wondered if maybe there was a bad connection from me taking the computer apart several times for various things I have done to it over the years.  (I have had other problems beside this) If your modem is newer...And worked with XP...

It is probably too advanced to work with 98.  You may need a different driver.  Maybe you can try loading a Windows 98 driver?

It would help if I knew how old the modem is...If you installed it...and what brand it is.The net connection is? What are your other problems?> Quote
My modem worked in xp.  But it doesn't work in windows 98 or linux(which i also have loaded now)

If the modem works in Windows XP, but not in Linux or Windows 98, it is most likely a driver issue. Have you obtained the original drivers or are you using Windows drivers?  The pcmia modem does EXCACTLY the same thing though-connecting at VERY slow speeds, so I am thinking it is independant of the modems.  Is a loose connection a possibility?See the schematics of the mainboard to see if these connectors are related.

Are you certain there is no virus, spyware or trojan horse.. You should scan none the less.

Also, Windows XP may be improperly configured. Using the Windows XP Firewall is a case of bad configuration, for example.I don't know much about laptops...but on a desktop, the modem has to be snug in the PCI slot, like RAM must be put in tightly.  I made the mistake of not making it (new modem) being put in tightly, and Windows wouldnt recognize it.  It took me ALMOST an hour to realize i did not install it correctly.  I would say a loose connection is a REMOTE possibility.Type ping or ipconfig /all in the command prompt.....what is the mtu set at?  What would be the ONE connector that would cause both modems to connect slowly?

Solve : Windows Media Player 10-I need help!?

Answer»

Ok here is the problem..I RECORDED some videos on my digital camera, and when put onto my "kodak easyshare program" it says them as a realone player. I want it to be set as WMP. This also applies to all my other videos! Videos i download play in realoneplayer, when i want WMP! please help...(I've tried most of the obvious things) Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types.
Or you could uninstall the real virus.  didnt work..i cant find "file types"what do you mean by "uninstall the real virus"?

you say wnidows explorer...meaning internet? Quote

1. what do you mean by "uninstall the real virus"?

2. you say wnidows explorer...meaning internet?

1. Real Player is known to contain spyware. Remove it and find an alternative Real video and AUDIO player.

2. Fed means the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Folder options
5. File types tabok..i went there...but now what?Open with .....should  have  popped  up.....wmp..... Quote
ok..i went there...but now what?

You can configure the extensions to open with the program of your choosing.i go to extensions and i CHANGED all the "realone player" icons to WMP. Then i go to play my video and the icon is still RP and it plays in RP. Now if i open with WMP, it says this and doesnt work:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."Real Player contains codecs that Windows Media Player does not. Hence the error. You may be able to obtain these codecs on the Internet.

I suggest that you look into Alternative Real Player

ok i did this. I delted realone player..And it make it quicktime..Then i deleted quicktime, and it wouldnt let me run it in anything BUT quicktime.im downloading the codecs..what do i do when it completes? They are not codecs, it is a program which contains a part of Real player. Just not the spyware part.

If you wish to add codecs to Windows Media Player, search that website to see if you can find any you need. I never work with ADDITIONAL codecs apart from AC-7 and DivX, so I can not quite help you out there.i have no more hope... Quote
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

If WMP cannot play the file, either get a program that can play the file or convert the file to something that WMP can play.

Not without reformatting.

I do not see in why you want to, as Windows XP Professional contains all the FEATURES of Home and more. You will not notice the difference. You can format the drive reinstall windows 98se then reinstall the upgrade setup.
you can install the xp home to exist as another operating system, the main problem is that it is an upgrade cd it will not upgrade back from xp pro as that is the better operating system.

Why would you want to go backwards to the Home Edition, the Pro edition is better in a lot of ways SECURITY and network  components are superior for a start.

You don't need to install '98se to install XP.

What was, or is, the original installation on your computer?

To install an XP upgrade you need to have the previous operating system CD as qualifying media and then you can do a clean install. Why do you need to go back to Home Edition? What are the problems you are experiencing with XP Professional?

Hi, i'm not sure if this is a problem with my computer or my dvd drive... :-/

What it is:

EVERYTIME i load a dvd/cd it AUTORUNS as normal if that's what it does.

Now if i select any of these most of these work, you can use a music cd or dvd film as usual and watch it perfectly.

But if you select 'open folder to view files' or go through my computer to explore the disk in the drive, ABSOLUTELY nothing happens.

Solve : Problem with ReLoading Windows.(3 questions)?

Answer»

OK. Recurring problem. Comp worked well for a week and then crashed (totally) again. Blue screen. Data dump, etc.

Reformatted Hard drive (not a quick format) twice. Used Gateway UTILITY CD to reload windows. Am now getting this error during windows set-up.
Error: setuperr.log
NetSetup: The computer name of this computer is set to the NetBios name that this computer had before the upgrade. The comp name is the first label of the full DNS name of this computer. Depending on the implementation and configuration of the DNS servers used in your infrastructure, this DNS name may not be added to the DNS database because the computer name contains the underscore character. To ensure that the DNS name on the computer can be registered in DNS, please verify that the DNS server allows host DNS names to contain the underscore character, or change the Comp name of this computer through the Network Identification tab of System Properties. Note: the default configuration of a Windows XP DNS server allows host names to contain underscore character.
********
My questions would be.
1). What upgrade. I reformatted my hard drive and went to load a clean copy of windows on top of that empty formatted drive.
2). What (and where is it located) is the System Properties referred to in the above message? Is this in the Bios or Dos prompts? If not, where is it, and what name should i change or change to so that i can just load Windows XP?
3). Also a question regarding the Bios of the comp. I had been having other problems, (lots) and one guy on here suggested that i might have recently flashed the BIOS. I did during the first REBUILD, remove the maxell bios battery for a few minutes, at the (unsuggested) suggestion!! of a Gateway or Microsoft engineer. Ithink this was in order to clear an administrator password. anyway, it worked. Was this "flashing"? Also, for GOOD measure, I just removed it again today and reformatted my hard drive prior to that. But one of the earlier messages today was saying that i might need to turn off shadowing and caching in the BIOS. Looked all through the BIOS and don't see any tabs or options where i can see or access these things in there. Would like to turn them off as i don't see why i need to CACHE anything in the BIOS???
One of the messages said wthat there might be a CMOS error or something like this??
Is a CMOS virus in the BIOS, and launching into each new XP version that i load, so that eventually my comp dies again each time? Is this possible? If so, how to combat this? Based on the rest of the above?
Would love to find these answers. Thanks.First of all, when was the last time you updated your virus definitions?

Second of all, are you absolutely sure you don't have a hardware problem?

Third, what does the message on the blue screen say-- EXACTLY as it appears?the thing is, i had a virus in my machine back in the states. then moved to europe. norton could see the virus but not disable it. I then got swis cablecom software F-Secure, which renamed all files that were virus infected. Since then i have reformatted the C drive. and reloaded everything. F-Secure anti virus is up to date as wel. so, i'm trying to figure out what the blazes caused this machine to crash again.

what kind of hardware problem do you have in mind???

because,  i think that the hard drive might be screwed, basically, in a nutshell.  but i don't wish to purchase another hard drive and then have this happen again. i want to know what the possibility of a CMOS problem is. and go from there? i.e., remove the blooody thing!
can't recall the exact message on that blue fail screen, it flashes only for a quarter of a second!! and that was before the last rebuild. now my problem is that i can't get XP to load properly. why? what do you think is happening here??
There are instructions on this site if you look around a little on how to stop the blue screen from disappear. Just in case you can't find them, here they are again:

Right Click on "My Computer" go to Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Startup & recovery--UNCHECK the autoreboot box.Make certain you are not booting of a Network device.

Solve : Hardware config files?

Hi,

where can I find the file(s) that windows accesses during startup that contain the hardware configurations?  Alternatively, how can I get a Windows XP program from an old computer configured to the hardware on my new computer? The new machine also runs WinXP. I was able to get the machine to boot up with the older XP, but the hardware config was off, so the system crashed.  Hal file >>>    what messages are displayed on SCREEN!What do you mean? I have only been able to get to the HAL file through Device Manager, and almost nothing is displayed. What program can I use to open the hal.dll file?HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/q216251/I don't have the CD or floppy disks that the article requires. I shall try it anyway.
Also, the article says it only applies to Windows 2000, I have XPSame system!I tried pressing F5 during the setup screen. The computer was nonplussed. It ignored me. I have XP MEDIA Center Edition, I assume that this makes no difference.Ok tell us the system spes of the pc you are having a problem with:Okay,

                        1GB RAM
                        WIN XP Media Ctr
                        250 GB SATA hdd
The issue arises by putting hdd from older machine into new machine and not being able to access 'My Documents' folder. Something to do with the permissions that are on the old hdd. My theory is to start the new machine with the old o/s in the hope that the permissions will then be GRANTED and I'll be able to transfer the files I want to the new machine. I have access to everything on the old hdd except those files that are in the 'Documents and Settings' folder. I am juts trying to get around the permissions. Both the new and the old computer have/had Windows XP, so it should work. When installing HOLD down the f6 key!How do I install the o/s when I have no cds or floppy disks? If I do manage to re-install XP on the old hdd, will it grant me permission to have at the files I want?

I've been having constant problems with installing software.  I get CRC errors constantly and I keep getting errors that say that files don't match their counterparts in setup's .CAB file.  My computer also erroneously restarts without any explanation.  Any help would be appreciated.Try this and let us know!!What are your system temperatures? Are your fans running properly?I just recovered from a serious error according to windows...It says it is due to a hardware issue, but all of my drivers are up to date and everything seems to be working.  Also, I've run memtest and have no idea what i'm supposed to be looking for to determine whether my memory is good/bad.

Yes, my fans are running properly-all 3 of them.  According to Temp guage my Computer is running at around 84 degrees fahrenheit.About testing memory. . .

Thanks for the help.

There's no spyware, adware, or viruses on my computer.Pull the other memory stick. put the stick you want to test in the other slot. turn on your computer. If you hear beeps, but the computer does not come on, that is an indicator that it is the RAM. Quote

Also see this excellent tool which is very easy to use and nearly automated.I'm almost positive that it was the one memory stick now...I pulled the one I'm using now that works and replaced it with the evil one and it blue screened after windows loaded.

Thanks for the help guys!Did the ram show up in the bios setup!how do i check? All I know is that with the stick I'm using now, I can install programs without errors and windows runs.
If I use the other one I blue screen...

Once again thanks for the help.  Luckily the memory is under warranty and I'll be getting another stick shortly! Are these sticks matched! if you need the bios  setupYes, the sticks match.  They were installed by Cyberpowerinc.com when I ordered the computer from them.   One appears to have gone bad though.  I'm about to run a memory diagnostic on the other one right now, just to be sure.

Solve : How to add a modem?

Answer»

i find a laptop im INTERESTED in online but it says that all i need to do is ADD a modem how would  i do that?Matt:

You will have to purchase a modem that is a PCMCIA card (also called a PC Card):

http://www.pcmcia.org/pccard.htm

http://www.pcmcia.org/faq.htm

Make sure there is a free PCMCIA slot on the laptop that will fit the card you buy.  Also, be certain you purchase a PC Card modem that is for the kind of Internet CONNECTION you want (e.g. dial-up, DSL or cable).  You may shop for one from one from a myriad of online stores, including of these places:

* Amazon.com: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-51,GGLD:en&q=pcmcia+modem+site%3Aamazon%2Ecom

P.S. Some Internet SERVICE providers provide a modem for you.  So check with your ISP before you shop.

Solve : Unwanted Photo Copies?

Answer»

I loaded about 100 DIGITAL photos from a trip onto my computer in order to edit them. EDITING done just fine. Now that I'm through and ready to delete them, copies are automatically made and I cannot delete the photos. Each time I attempt deletion (by any of several means) another copy of the photo is made. HELP!!What program are you using?

And why WOULD you delete them after editing?Which operating system are you using? Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have MS Windows XP and was using MS Picture It! to edit the photos. Have done it for thousands of pics w/o problem. I had made a CD of the photos (with sound) using DVD Photoplay and another CD w/o sound just for backup copies. The trouble began at some point after the CD preps. Unwanted copies appeared and when deletion is attempted, more copies are made. Wierd! And what software have you used to create CD's?What folders have they held in! Use search to find out!Give it the old college try. From a command prompt, navigate to the directory containing the files. Assuming that they all have save file extension (i.e .jpg):
ren *.jpg *.bad
del *.badI have seen this before, it was a virus.
Don't ask me which one, it was on a friends computer & I just ran all the scans and that fixed it.Thanks to all who responded. I haven't yet found the source of the problem, but finally managed to get rid of all the unwanted copies. The number of photo copies had reached >5,000!! I will run all of my virus scans in an effort to eradicate "it" if "it" is a virus.

Solve : Check File System On C: Message On Bootup?

Answer»

Everytime I BOOTUP, I get the "CHECKING file system on C:" message.  It states, "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency."  I have both allowed the check to proceed, and have hit a key to bypass the check.  Either way, my computer functions NORMALLY after bootup.

This problem began after I reformatted my HD and reinstalled WinXP Home, which I have done many times before.  I have and 80G master IDE HD and a 20G secondary IDE HD, with plenty of free space on both DRIVES, PIII 1.2G processor, and 512mb.  The file system is STORED on the master drive.  Ironically, when I reformatted this time, the master drive was assigned the letter "F" and the secondary drive was assigned the letter "C".  Maybe this happened because, for the most part, I allowed the reformat and reinstallation procedure to proceed without much oversight, since I have done this many times before.

My suspicion is that, since the file system is not on C:, Windows initiates the disk check at bootup.  Whether or not that is true, how can I eliminate this disk check?I have seen a question like this before. Have a look here

Solve : Refusal To Startup?

Answer»

My home version of Windows XP absolutely refuses to start up.  For weeks now if I restarted or shut it down I would try to start it up and it would go to the "Failed to start properly" screen and ask me to choose one of three Safe Modes, Last Configuration That Worked, or Start Normally.  I could either let it do its 30 second countdown or choose manually, but either way it would go to the scrolling bar screen to make me think it was starting up, and then it would black out and restart.  It began to take 30 minutes to an hour to startup successfully, but now refuses to startup at all.  It'll take me to the selection screen (as if I used the F8 key), but no matter whether I let it countdown or choose any of the options it will freeze everything.  The only thing I am able to do is hit the 'DEL' key selection before it reaches this screen, and looking through there hasn't shown me anything that stands out as something I can tweak to fix it.  I haven't downloaded or installed anything recently (ATLEAST nothing I didn't already have and had reinstalled), and even before then I was experiencing difficulty.  My dad tells me I have a virus, yet my scan ran automatically every night and I never had any results upon checking it the next morning.  I fear more than anything losing all my files.  My father wishes to reformat, yet he has done this to me already this year after I have stored many years' worth of information on the computer.  I have finally REACHED a happy medium, and he's wanting to reformat all over again.  Losing all the things I worked hard to make up for my great previous loss will absolutely drive me into a breakdown, so if anyone can please help it would be appreciated so very much.  If you have any questions, I will try to answer them to the best of my knowledge.  Thank you. Solve : My Network Problem: Cannot Copy File?

Answer»

I have set up a Home Network for my room, because i have 2 computers that i have connected through a router.  Now i have 2 FOLDERS on each computer called, Shared MUSIC.  I used to be able to go onto one computer and take music from the other, just by going into my network and than the other computers Share Music folder.  But for some reason, now when i try to take music from the other computer, it says:

Error Copying File Or Folder
Cannot Copy (Song Name): Access Is Denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
And that the file is not currently in use.

But, neither of my drives are full.  And none of the songs i try to take or being used in any way.

Help would be HIGH appreciated, thanks in advance!

PS: I used Windows XP1) make sure your permissions haven't been changed on your xp user profile, check both comp's permissions
2) make sure that the file isn't in use by a background program or some hidden player
3) try booting the other comp in safe MODE but allow network connections, then try getting the file, if you can get it then there's some program or process holding onto that file normallyhttp://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htmLJ:

Does this happen with every file you try to copy or just some files?

Have you recently made any changes (such as changing a password or adding a new program or anything at all)?  If so, what changes were made?

What operating system is installed on each PC?

Do you get the error when you try to see the contents of a folder on the other PC or are you able to browse the folders but just cannot access the files?

I had this problem recently where I could copy files in one direction but not the other. This command may help:

NETSH winsock reset catalog

You  can run it from the command line or the Windows Run box. Run it from the machine where you have the error message.

Hope this helps.

Solve : I think I killed it. o.O;' .. Maybe??

Answer»

Hi, umm...
I was trying to remove viruses and stuff a while ago with Hijackthis, and I deleted something CALLED svchost with it.
Now, I know that svchost is important, but I didn't think that it'd be on Hijackthis.

Ever since I did that I have no absolutely no problems with any of my viruses or spyware, but there was a *serious* downside.
I now have no sound, like, at all. My device manager kind of.. doesn't show up... It just says it's blank, and my bottom panel for my start menu, quick launches, etc is stuck in Windows Classic Style because the XP things, such as the METALIC one are all.. sort of.. unavailable. (Windows Classic is the only thing on the list.)

Does anyone know how I could fix my problem, or even what I did in the first place?
It'd be appreciated if someone could e-mail me, because.. well.. I'm sort of a dunce. ~Smiles abruptly.~

Use the address [email protected]om
Thanks for your time!

-Katheryn T.Svchost.exe probably the most important .dll host and probably the most misunderstood.

Don't know what OS you are using as you didn't say, but you could try running SFC /SCANNOW from the command prompt and maybe, just maybe, it will give you back a copy of Svchost.exe

You will need your full copy of the OS cd.

Otherwise if you know of someone who is running the same OS as you, you might persuade them to dash off a copy for you.

Good luckHijackThis lists it because there is malware that can call itself svchost.exe.

Plus, HijackThis shows all running processes because it was designed to do so. (That is why they tell you to be careful when removing entries)

If you are using Windows XP, try a repair installation:

Oh, by the way, my OS is Windows XP Home Edition. Quote

1. would it be recommended that I fix this, or leave it?

2. Does that mean that my viruses can't be activated

1. If it is broke, fix it. If it isn't  broke, upgrade it.

2. No such thing unless they are quarantained by your virus scanner.I just searched my computer & found 2 instances of svchost.
C:\winnt\system32\svchost
C:\winnt\system32\dllcache\svchost
On XP the 'winnt' directory would be the 'windows' directory.
You could do a search and replace the missing one in the appropriate DIRECTORIES if you find a spare.

Solve : symantec eating memory?

Answer»

i was looking around my computer to find out there was 2.5 gb more in programs files then there should be the to find in common files then symantec shared  to find out its most in all file named virusdefs with 2.13 but seems to change every once in a while once it was 1.14 gb whats going on =/  i could relly use that  memory ..Welcome to the CH forums.

You've come across just one of the Symantec/Norton problems - it's resource HUNGRY.  Ever considered a move to different (free) anti-virus/firewall programs?  If you'd like to investigate there are instructions in the CH FAQ section here and here.

Good luck.Yes, Symantec has had that reputation for a while...at one point, LOCAL computer experts on Chicago radio had recommended running their utilities directly from the CD rather than actually installing the program.

You will find many excellent alternatives suggested by the members of this forum.Hey, yeah the other members are correct in saying that symantec is a recourse hungry app, although if you are looking for a lighter load I would have to go with NOD 32 from ESET.

It runs on one of my clients PC's, at 64 RAM / 800mhz processor ^_^

http://www.eset.comI second ESET NOD32.
I run it on my 566MHz Celeron with 256MB of RAM, and it doesn't cause performance issues at all.
I also run it on a 200MHz Pentium with 96MB of RAM, and no performance impact.
And, a 400MHz Celeron with 64MB of RAM.
It's a wonderful program. Very much worth the price.
I haven't used Norton since.. uh.. 2005?

Solve : No USB's Working?

Answer» HELLO All,

I have a Dell Opti Gx620 that once the Windows XP logo screen appears, it shuts off the USB mouse and KEYBOARD.  I have tried Safe Mode and it does the same thing, it started with a blue screen at the login but I have resolved that.  So now I am stuck with no USB and of course the machine has only USB......any ideas?Check the bios to see if the legacy stuff is turned on.

Everything is turned on in the BIOS.......Can you open Device Manager and see whether it shows your USB PORTS as working properly?  This can be DONE from the keyboard, even though it's cumbersome.I am unable to get passed the login screen because it seems that Windows is disableing the USB ports.  My keyboard and mouse are USB....I tried Safe mode and they turn off there as well.....I believe you should be able to get passed the login screen by using the tab key and arrow keys, and maybe others, on your keyboard. The keyboard is dead once the Windows XP logo appears.......Hey guys thanks for the HELP.  I did a windows repair after choosing Enter, F8 to accept the license, and once it did it's thing it is now back to normal.    Windows finally did something right!!!!!  Take Care and Peace Out!!!

Solve : lost capacity?

Answer»

Hello all, I'm a novice with a big problem. I have an old IBM with max. capacity of 9.41GB. Until yesterday, I had approx. 4.5 GB unused. Now I have only 265MB available. My Os is Windows 2000 Pro, I run AVG antivirus, spybot and spy blaster. Several things happened yesterday: 1: TRIED to download AVG updates several times but received error messages; I then went to their web site and ran Vcleaner in safe mode. Then was able to down updates? 2: Tried to down a learning tool-"Excel VIEWER" for MS web site but cannot find it. 3: Comcast my ISP, has sent their "Desktop Doctor" to help their clients; which I also downloaded. As an aside, I now have a squiggly icon in my tray that reads"Protecting your email config-never protected"? 4: I share a partitioned computer; I went to my friend's side and found a message in IE that AVG had detected the virus I-Worm/Bagle and was now in the "Vault". Are any of these occurences related to my lost capacity? ThanksData downloaded causes the Hard Disk Drive's storage free space to decrease. That is rather logical.

Defragmenting and uninstalling programs you no longer require is also a good idea. When did you last run chkdsk and defrag the drive?Raptor & Mac... Problem solved...I did a scan for virus, spyware, adaware, defrag, etc...to no avail. I then went to my program files and checked the PROPERTIES for any size abnormalcy and deleted those programs not needed. Came upon a SPAMfighter program I had downloaded Wed. and the size was 3.76 GB....there was my problem. Much thanks to both of you for your input and guidance!Come back anytime. Solve : Moving Drive with Windows XP on it?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software question; I'll start here:
(please read the whole thing before replying - I've already done some research, so there's a decent chance I've already tried - or can't try - the basic suggestions)
I'm in the process of building a new PC (you may know me from such message threads as "Bad CPU/mobo/both"). Because my old PC died, I'm moving the hard drive from the old one to the new one. Everything else in the new PC is new, so Windows XP will properly see that the PC's "signature" has changed.
Here's the part that I screwed up: When I saw that the hard drive worked in the new PC, I got so excited that I tried to go into Windows XP. I know now that it was a Really Bad Idea.
I saw the bootstrap (white bar across the bottom) screen, then a blue error screen flash very quickly - I couldn't read ANYTHING on it, then the PC rebooted itself.
My bottom line question will be: How can this Windows XP (Pro w/SP2) be saved? But first, some additional info:
This is NOT an OEM copy of XP, and it's not a cloned drive. This is a legal copy of XP and a legal move of the drive.
I have the original XP installation CD (without SP2; it might be SP1).
The drive is a dual boot - I can successfully get into Win 98 (SE).
When I try now to get into XP, it tells me that the last attempt to load Windows failed (possible to due to a hardware change, which is correct), and that I should try Safe Mode. Safe mode doesn't work either - same reboot issue. Same thing with Last Known Good Configuration.
It never asks me for anything, including an activation code.
I think that's everything.
So - help!
TIA.
You can not move a Hard Disk Drive from one computer to another. Especially not if Windows XP is installed. Pre-Windows XP operating systems may be more forgiving.Try slipstreaming SP2 with your XP SP1 CD, as you have SP2 on the drive, and then try a repair installation from the RECOVERY CONSOLE on the new XP SP2 CD.

You can use AutoStreamer 1.0 (freeware) to do the slipstreaming.

Mac,
Thanks - I'll give that a try. I understand the slipstreaming part (& was about to look into BartPE for a Windows XP CD), but I'm not confident that I'll know what to do at the Recovery Console. Any additional tips/hints/specifics you can provide? I'll look into it via your MS link & web search as well, of course.
Thanks again.
MarkIf it a new motherboard  etc..........contact msoft.........As I understand it you can do a Repair install, so that your new system gets all the right drivers, but you will need to re-register it as the motherboard, etc. is different.

You'll find the Repair install option on the same MICHAEL Stevens site.

What are the specs on the old drive?

Would a new drive not be a better option? FASTER, bigger drive-cache, etc. and then slave the old drive to it to recover data, format it, and use it for storage? Quote

Oh, yeah. And I've spent considerable time ruminating on that today. And I may yet do that - I recently installed a new WD 200 gb drive on a different box, and was thrilled with its cloning capabilities. $40 for a 200 gb - definitely worth it. I think PartitionMagic can do that, too, and I've got a copy.
But I didn't want to start from scratch with this PC's settings if I could help it.
Meanwhile, the repair worked - I did a repair install from the original CD, and spent the rest of the night patching from the MS website. So far, thingsWinxp now will wonder why i have i been installed on this mobo!Msoft has covered all the angles!

Solve : Windows XP won't boot... :(?

Answer»

Hi,

I have this XP Professional computer at home that doesn't want to boot. When I try to boot it always SAYS: WINDOWS can't be booted because the following file cannot be found or is damaged: \windows\system32\config\system. I really don't know what to do as I tried everything I know. If you know how to fix this, please help!   Go here   http://swatrant.blogspot.com/2005/11/windows-could-not-start-because_17.html...and here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545Thanks for your help guys, the problem was solved.  Now I have to repare ONE more computer and my job is done. system32/driver/pci.sys is missing/damaged, but I bet Microsoft Support has that solution too.  I tried to access XP's system restoration but I couldn't get there because pci.sys was missing. Also, the screen was covered in red stripes. I think we need to buy a whole new harddisk before we can even TRY to do a system restore...   If you think it is the hard drive, go to the drives manufacturer's website and download the diagnostics disk and check the hard drive.  You can always boot from the XP - CD and do a repair install.  The stripes on the MONITOR would lead me to believe the graphics card is acting up.  There's a slight problem. In order for me to do a repair install, I need to have access to XP's setup menu, which I don't because pci.sys is missing.

O yeah, this wasn't actually my pc, but my nephew's. He took the pc anyway and said it doesn't matter. My parents asked if I could keep the broken pc, but he sort of said no. Now, my parents will try to convince him through my uncle and aunt to give it to me anyway. They'll be back in 2 weeks; they're on a holiday in Morocco. The Recovery Console should load even with the missing file...
Boot with the XP CD in and hit the first R to launch the Recovery Console...
From there you should be able to copy/replace the pci.sys file to the Windows installation...

Here Ya Go...Thanks Patio, I'll try as soon as possible.

P.S.: do you MIND if I copy that quote from your signature?

Solve : Unable to Create Network Connection?

Answer»

Hi all, I am fairly new here

Although Iam faced with a rather odd problem, that I personally have never encountered before...

When I am trying to create a network CONNECTION, via my modem (56k), I go through all the usuall procedures, Network Connections, Add, Connect to Internet, Connect Manually, then I am presented with this screen:

As you can see I am UNABLE to create a connection using a "dailup" modem.

I am worried that it might be some of the security applications conflicting, causing some kind of problem with setting up the connection :/

I am 99.9% sure theyre is no malware or infections on my pc, as I am a paranoid user.

Also, the computer has no access to the internet at all.

Kind Regards, Peter.I KNOW it sounds simple but the only time I have had that problem is if the drivers are not correct for your modem or it is not installed at all.  I would try a reinstall of the device and its drivers.Check the modem in Device Manager.  Does it show up OK?

Solve : Donot knw hw to Configure Outlook Express.?

Answer»

hello
i want to use my outlook express .
i want to CONNECT it to mail portal (mail.com) so that i can receive n send mails through outlook only.
can any one plz tel me how to configure outlook express.

Thankx in Advance. What makes you think Outlook Express (OE) can be used with mail.com's mail service?  If it can, they surely would have info on their site on how to SETUP OE.  Have you searched for such info?  If they have none, then you can assume their mail will not work with OE.

I briefly visited mail.com and did not see any info on using OE.  But, I suggest you also SEARCH.  Does mail.com support pop3 or imap?
If not this isn't going to work.Looking for a Premium Account?

Solve : Help with changing words around?

Answer»

Ok here is what I want to do. (this is for a class project)

I have copied and pasted a big alphabetical LIST of 6 letter words to microsoft word.

What I need is to somehow switch all of the words into random places so that they are not in alphabetical ORDER and they all have exactly one space inbetween the words!

Also, if you have a link to a site where I could just find a list of 6 letter words that are not in alphabetical order that would serve the same PURPOSE!

Thanks!
-TedDo you know the version your using?I can gain access to any of them but the one i have is microsoft word 2003?  There a few ways to do it you can set tabs exatly one inch apart or TAB till there a inch a part tabing should give you about half an inch thought so you would have to do it twice.  how will that randomly change all the words in the list around? remember i need to do this with at least 1000 words
