Solve : Blocking access to computer clock settings?

Answer»

My teenage son is changing the time on the COMPUTER's clock to get round the time limits we have SET via the McAffee 'parental control' software.

Is there a way of stopping his access to the computer settings?  Welcome to the CH forums.

There's a RegEdit here to RESTRICT access to the Control Panel (if that's where the Time is being altered).

You will have to set your sons account without Admin Privileges.

You could also set the Admin Account with a password known only to parents.

Good luck.If he is SETTING it through the BIOS you will need to enter setup at boot time and enter a BIOS password...make sure to write it down and KEEP it in a safe place...if you lose it you won't be able to boot the machine.

Solve : browser windows and icons too large?

Answer»

All of a sudden when I boot up (I have Windows ME), it boots up NORMAL looking, till it gets to the TASK bars at the bottom. They are so large, also the icons on the desktop, and any window I open up is so large that I cannot get to any controls to do anything about it.

Hope I have made sense, but I need help

Thanks
cbRight click on your desktop, choose 'properties' then the 'settings' tab and see if you can increase your screen resolution (screen area).YES, in the settings tab, you can adjust kthe resolution in the PORTION "screen area".

you will see 640X480 , 800X600 etc

on increasing this  resolution your  icon size will decrease but screen size will increase

note: If you can not change this you will need your video card driver

Solve : Square Characters in Text?

Answer»

Hello.  This question may have already been POSTED in the past, but having searched for it, I found no results.

For years now I've noticed (in emails mainly) that what was originally accurate text (I'm sure), has some characters replaced with a character-sized square.  Is this due to a simple font issue?  Or perhaps some type of encoding difference between computers?  When I tried to paste an example here, the little square was gone and was replaced with a space.

I'm USING Windows XP Pro SP2.  Thanks in advance for any help.
What E-mail service are you using?

What E-mail client are you using?

Are these E-mails in HTML?
Thanks for replying.  I'm using my work email in Outlook 2003 (not using Exchange).  I have seen it several times and I don't remember whether they were all text or not, but this example was text (not HTML).  It's usually a quotation mark or an apostrophy or similar. What E-mail provider are you using?

What language is your OS?
It is my work email in this case.  The provider is Plexus Systems, but I've seen it in other email providers also throughout the years.  Language is English (US).do you have any email scanners....that maybe over reacting...do you have java??have you tried another broswer ... Quote

Can you change the Character encoding in Outlook like you can in Internet Explorer under View -> Character Encoding?

I use Mozilla Thunderbird so I can't look into Outlook.I didn't see any option for that.  The Help file also had nothing about encoding except as it pertains to security and encryption.

Oh well, not a big deal.  Just wondered if anyone knew why that happened on occasion.

Thanks.Sorry, we have no Outlook users on this forum it seems.

Solve : Help with resolving an error (xerces panic error)?

Answer»

im am using windows xp pro with SP2

the problem i have is associated with the error message xerces panic error (could not load a transcoding service)

at first, i thought it was a software problem as i encountered it first when i was installing peachtree accounting (my system was still service pack 1 at that time). installation seems fine but when it gets to 100% and running final steps, the error appears. i just press ok and then the installation finishes ok.

i then try to run the app but i again get the same error. at this point, i was thinking that it may be a conflict with one of my running processes so i disabled my anti virus.. still nothing

then i disabled my FIREWALL, still nothing
then i restarted the computer in safe mode so that it will only load the essential drivers, i still get the same error

at this time, i was thinking it must be a software problem

then the next day, i tried to run my 3600 printer assistant (hp) and then i also get the same error. this got  me SUSPICIOUS as i have been able to run this program without any problems before. i began to think that it was a windows problem not software.

so i installed service pack 2 (and RAN automatic UPDATE and  installed all updates) in the hope of fixing the problem

but after all those things i did, i still get the same error

i dont think its software related but rather something in my windows setting perhaps. i will really appreciate any help..tnxHave you disabeled certain services in Start -> Run -> services.msc?like what kind of services (im not very familiar with the services and its functions)?

as i've said, i have been able to run the printer assistant without any problems before.. and its just reccently that it wont run anymore

not really sure what caused itUnder services.msc make certain that the Print spooler is set to automatic and that it is started.

Solve : Internet connection freezes?

Answer»

Hey,

Having searched the forums I couldn't find anything that was similar to the problems I've been encountering so I thought that I'd start a new thread.

My problem is this. My computer can not maintain its internet connection over time. Being very inexperienced with computers I may well not highlight the problem well enough, but I will do my best.

Basically whilst I'm browsing the internet with firefox I will be given the message "xxxx could not be found" or some such similar message. This prevents me from loading any new PAGES or refreshing the page I am on. HOWEVER my computer will maintain connections with video game servers and instant messaging programs for example.

Basically I think that my computer becomes unable to launch new IP connections, even if the ones I'm holding at the time are canceled.

So, I heard the problem was being caused by Microsofts Zero Configuration Connection wizard and that the PROGRAM to use to maintain the wireless network connection was available on a disk they had provided me with, it wasn't. This problem occurs with all computers on the wireless network, even though they have different network cards.

What I would like is if someone could tell me how to fix this problem or point me in the direction of a wireless netwrok connection program which will.

Any reply much appreciated,

Bromhttp://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/Troubleshooting-Wireless-Network-Connections.htmlThank you, I'll give it a read.  What has caused this problem to occur?

Have you scanned for VIRUSES, Trojan Horses and Spyware? No, I've had it since day#1 - my PC is void of all such things, I scan regularly.

I'm just looking for a different piece of software to run the configuration.  What scanners are you USING?

Solve : Retrieving "deleted" emails and IMs?

Please forgive me if this is the most ridiculous question that is posted but I am just one step above computer illiterate.

It isn't and I don't think you are ...lol

Well , in theory , when something is deleted , it really hasn't been........it is PROBABLY still residing in the pc .....unless it was deleted by a secure scrubbing app. There are services AVAILABLE to possibly recover these items , however it is expensive.
Is it possible that your Email server was set up to retain a copy ?
Unless you keep a logfile of your IM's ......I think they are gone . There may be another member who may be able to shed more light on your issue.

dl65

You can restore files using this program.

Your logs might be retrieveable, but the file used to store E-mail might be completely overwritten by now. I do not think that E-mail programs store every E-mail seperatly.i think its 30 TIMES, if you save emails over 30 times ontop of what you have deleted you wont be able to retreve them.

maby 20 times Depends entirely on the sector the computer is writing to. There's no specific number of times.Thank you so very much for your help.  I guess I just need to not be so quick to delete things in the FUTURE.  Thanks again!

Have you re-booted?Yes, I re-boot after Updating   But, this a.m. the Reminder icon was on the systray.

Answer» Im trying to make my first batch file and  trying to use it to open a csv file and delete the first 6 lines and then move to end and delete the LAST LINE.  I have been trying to figure something out the last few days but I havent been successful

here are the first 6 lines im trying to delete in the csv:

Enter value for begin_date: 01-JUN-2005
old 216:    vd_begin_dt           DATE                                 := '&Begin_Date';
new 216:    vd_begin_dt           DATE                                 := '01-JUN-2005';
Enter value for end_date: 05-SEP-2005

new 217:    vd_end_dt             DATE                                   := '05-SEP-2005';
I can give you a workaround.

Solve : Margin problems in Microsoft Word?

Answer»

In my office, I have Windows XP, and just about every time I GO to PRINT a word document I get the message that my margins are out of the printable area.  I have the option to fix.  If I choose fix, it gives me a left side margin of 2.67 inches.  If I tell it to print anyway and not to fix the margins I still get a 2.67 inch left side margin.  However, if I choose to send my document to a different printer at someone else's desk in prints fine and I get no margin ERROR message.  Any ideas?  Long time since I did this but I seem to remember that you need to check Print Setup and SEE if the margins are set there too.

Maybe take a look at the settings on the other machine.Try reinstalling the printer driver.

Solve : recording cable tv on my pc?

TV Tuner Card. TV Card.

Perhaps software will be delivered with the TV card, perhaps it won't. He will have to keep his eyes out when buying one.

Bruce also may need prior written PERMISSION from the specific cable network before he may record the broadcasts.

People aren't strangers to bootlegging anymore.  If I tape "New Yankee Workshop" while I'm gone to church, is that bootlegging? Isn't this the whole idea behind VCR's and DVD recorders? For the size and formats currently available i would say recording any video to a HDD isn't very cost effective.

Good point, S-Dave.

I was just THINKING about that notification i hear when i watch any professional sports BROADCAST about needing permission.  The law may require that such recorded shows be deleted after they are viewed.  However, i'm not a lawyer and am not the one to ask for legal advice.

Solve : Remove XP without re-installing?

Answer»
Hello all.. I would like to format a hard drive and remove XP without re-installing it on a computer I plan to sell. How do I format without having the OS installed?  thanksSonny:

No problem.

Boot your computer with the Windows XP CD (From the Windows DESKTOP: Put the CD in the optical drive, CLOSE the tray, and choose Start and Restart).

If you see a message to press a certain key to boot to the CD, do so.

When the text mode (blue display with white text) of Windows XP setup begins, you will be given the options:

* To set up Windows XP

* To create a partition

* To delete the selected partition

Choose the third option.  After the partition is deleted, choose the option to create a NEW partition and format it using FAT32 (if the new owner will install Windows 98 or Me) or NTFS (if the new owner will install Windows XP).

After the formatting, setup will ask if you want to install Windows XP on the new partition you CREATED and formatted.  Choose F3 to quit setup without installing XP.

If you don't know what operating system the new owner will install, just quit without formatting.

Regards,
Doc

Thanks Doc, I have printed your info and will begin soon. Exciting way to spend a Saturday night eh?   Quote

If you plan on selling the computer, you will want to write zeroes to the Hard Disk Drive.

What is the brand and name of the Hard Disk Drive installed?

Another idea...if i sell a machine as i do often i usually replace the hard drive and install a new one.
I've never given up one of my HDD's but your mileage may vary
With the price of HDD's as it is it's the simplest solution.

patio. Good idea patio .. altho there isn't really anything on it that I'd mind being seen, I would like to know how to do that for future reference. It's a Dell with a Maxtor 40g.If you download and install Eraser 5.1 (might be higher now) you'll see that there is a shortcut which will let you make a 'Nuke Boot Diskette'.

All you do is boot to this diskette and wipe the entire drive out.

I like to partition the empty drive just with a Primary and an Extended partition, so when the new owner comes to install s/he gets the message on partitioning. You could always install a LINUX freebie so that they get something useable. Quote

Most Hard Disk Drive manufacturers have free, but brand specific, software for download that can help you repartition, check the status of and write zeroes to the Hard Disk Drive.

Old and senile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I installed this program on my computer about 3 months ago and ran it several times. It fixed several errors, it claimed. Then my computer crashed. This was the last program I had installed on computer. I do not know if this program had anything to do with the crash. I was curious to see if anyone else was running this program and if so, had the had any problems.
ThanksIt seems like an ordinary registry cleaner. Nothing special about it. The E-mail is rather dodgy, though.Just the very NAME 'Error Nuke' tells me that it is amateurish and a program for 'geeks' or computer 'nerds'.

Try TuneUp Utilities and see what you think.

If you really want to spend money on total operating system and data protection, excluding electro-mechanical hardware failure, then I think that you should try Image for Windows and Image for DOS from TeraByte Unlimited in Vegas. They also produce BootIT NG a boot manager, which you might not need, but which comes with a Partition Resizer.

Four programs for US$60 with which you can make and restore drive images and data backups. Thanks for the advice everyone.Roscoe I tell you one thing. I also had Error Nuker and Spybot S&D always found SOMETHING about it and reported as a danger for computer. I immediately removed. So it can pretty be the cause of your crash.

Solve : deleting porn files?

Answer»

I have turned over a new leaf and stopping viewing PORN on the web. Is there a way I can remove all traces of it from my pc, so that my wife doesn't see it? Sometimes when you type in a URL, past porn sites I have visited that start with the same letters will pop up in the box below the URL line. Also, my Windows Media Player has a bunch of video porn files on it. Fortunately my wife is not very computer literate. But is there a way I can get rid of this stuff for peace of mind? (Without spending any money of course).hehe that's an interesting post  .  but ya you could go into your browser (may be a different path depending on which one you have, i use mozilla myself), click on the tools, then options, then you want to get into privacy and erase everything.  also to get all of the files out of media players the best thing that i have found is to go to downloads.com and download ccleaner, it's a freeware program.  run all three modes and it should do the trick.  good luck   Shinboe,

When I get into that privacy box, I don't see any way to erase anything. All there is a bar that moves up and down that lets you decide how you want your cookies to be handled.Would you want a pay softwear or a free softwear. I would say is better because they have things that would completley erase all traces of everything.

Paying serive: Evidence Eliminator:

Free Service: I forgot lol You can look up on google there around somewhereAs said http://www.ccleaner.com is very good but don't forget to clear your firewall logs too.
A friend told me that trick.  sorry i forgot to mention the firewall logs, the www.ccleaner.com worked just fine for me, clears all my logins and urls from the memory.  what browser are you using, if i knew that i would be able to help you betterI forgot, it also may be a good idea to go to lavasoft.com and download ad-aware se, and spybot search and destroy from downloads.com.  this will erase all of the spyware that comes from going to porn sitesI THINK you can do that manually also:

Remove cookies
TEMPORARY files
History
Search registry for "Recent files" -> here you can remove entries of media player.
Firewall logs -> New thing for me

Does anyone want to add anything on that listing.bad Boy lol

Yeh the Cc cleaner will wipe it out

R0SSRe-Partition, re-format and re-install.

Old ntuser.dat files and software files probably still contain entries where porn diallers and some .exe files are concerned so it is better to format IMO.

That way conscience is clear.Install Mozilla Firefox, install Block XXX and forget the password. It works. Trust me. Good thing I removed some of the keywords, otherwise it wouldn't even let me search for *censored* robin.

What you NEED to do is write zeroes to the entire HDD. Reformatting doesn't quite work if you truly want to remove all traces. Writing zeroes to the Hard Disk Drive causes all data to be destroyed and renders it unretrieveable by nearly any user.

You can obtain such software from the HDD manufacturer.

Solve : Problem with embedded objects?

Answer»

Whenever i copy & paste some images, excel data,ETC in a outlook/express mail, they become embedded objects.

Am i RIGHT?

The problem is that they are visible on some machines only.
The next thing i have to do is to add them as a attachment wasting some of the time.

What's the REASON and how can i overcome it.

ThanksHey guys,

Any HINT?   You can't control how people setup their email.
Mine is set to read in plain text and no attachments to be opened.Where is this setting?

I can find only one which says send in this format not recieve.Outlook Express>Tools>Options>Read.
Tick in plain text.Thanks,

Got for the express.

Do you konw the similar one for Outlook. No but I'm sure there's SOMETHING like that there. So if i get that then my problem solves.

Anybody knowing it? Quote

So if i get that then my problem solves.

No, what I'm saying is that you can't control how the other machines are optioned.
You could not send me a picture or any script, my email is set to reject such trivia.Putting it differently,

If i know the settings and there is a situation like this, i can intimate the user, look i am sending a mail like this, please change your setting for a minute.

Isn't it.Yes.Okay,

Any good links for Outlook/Express where i can find them out.You should find all you need in Outlook Options.I have already tried but ......Noticed an interesting thing:

I think its an plugin related problem.
The same mail is visible in Outlook and not in Express.
The interesting thing is that its on the same machine.

Solve : Serious Problem with system restore?

Answer»

okey, so the other day i had a problem with some spyware, i used highjak this and i couldn't delete the problem, so i went to use system restore (which i've done in the past, and has solved spyware problems) so i chose the date and the computer proceeded to logout out of windows and do its thing. i then went upstairs to brush my teeth and came down and was HORRIFIED to see a BLUE screen that read:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

then its says a bunch of other stuff like check new hardware...yada yada yada. after this it tells me to try Disable BOIS memory options such as caching or shadowing. then PROCEEDS to tell me to try to start in safe mode (to my dismay doesn't work)

Technical information:
***STOP:0x0000006B (0xC0000033, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

i tried safe mode and it did the same thing, tried booting with windows xp cd, computer ignores it even after i set my dvd rom to boot priority.

computer specs are Intel Pentuim 4 2.4 with H.T 1024 ddr ram, ATI Radeon 9550 256mb, Windows XP Proffesional. thanks in advance, cus this is really frustrating me.hi, well i've never heard of roxie or whatever the heck that is, and i didn't try upgrading windows xp. everything was ship shape untill i used system restore. the reason i used system restore is becuase i couldn't get rid of this stupid dll file, which was spyware. i looked up the error thing on the microsoft sight, it tells me to disable something called "GoBack" (i dont know what that is)
it then says this:

To disable GoBack when Windows XP Setup restarts your computer: 1. Press SPACEBAR to view the GoBack boot menu.
2. Press D (to disable goBack), press Y (yes, to confirm), and then press ENTER twice.

whats this about windows setup restarting my computer? i'm just really confused becuase they say to fix this you have to be in windows, but i cant get into windows no madder what i do. i have a feeling that my problem is a unique problem, becuase i dont have some program called "goback" or "roxie" on my computer. i'm all out of ideas to be honest......if you can help. please please REPLY. thanks

also, the error code they have is slightly different then mine

*** STOP: 0x0000006B (0x0000003A, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I have never installed anything to do with nortan on my computer. My computer wont work in safe mode, i have never had roxio goback on my computer nor have i had any nortan software on it eitherBut you see, i dont have goback on my computer"pass>>robins relpy>>" what do you mean by this? ok, i didn't try any upgrades or install any new hardware on my computer. and i dont know how to disable bois memory options like caching or shadowing. so, if ya tell me how, i can try that. thanksalright, how exactly do i do that? I can't boot from the cd rom and the six floppy set to boot the computer also gives me an error
i posted my specs in the original message. and when you say "data" what exactly are you looking for?
Let me guess: You spoke to Merlin and he removed all his messages.

(which i've done in the past, and has solved spyware problems)

Negativo. System restore does not help resolve any type of privacy problem. It only helps hide it from the USER by making it a bigger mess. What you should have done was disable system restore before removing spyware or viruses.

Solve : saving drivers b4 reformat?

I'm about to reformat 2 computers - a cleansweep of a win98 now to winxp, and the other with a corrupt winxp starting again. Is there a way on both of these units to copy all the installed drivers, then do the reformat, and then reload these copied drivers. How do I do this, and in what folder are they located. Thanks for your help.for some reason...I don't THINK that is POSSIBLE The WIN XP CD usually has most of the necessary drivers, or you ALREADY know that you need to copy them?If you click on the XP INFO link below you can take a compatability test at PC Pitstop which may assist you to take the RIGHT course of action. :-/  Thanks guys. both of these comps belong to a friend and I said I'd do a favour and get them running right. Installing winxp is the first step. But of course he doesn't have any of the original drivers - ie for the installed sound and graphics cards etc - not worried about printers and stuff because as you say xp has most of these. i'm just worroied that I'm going to get stuck never getting his graphics and sound working after cleansweep instal.Well there is this http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com

Check your Recycle Bin/Temporary Internet Files/ and Temp folders as these are safe to empty.

Solve : Error : 34 Message?

Answer»

A friend of mine is having some major computer trouble, heres the deal;  he just got the internet a few weeks ago, his computer got loaded up with spyware.  I went to his house today and ran all of my spyware programs, defragged his comp, gave him a firewall and installed mozilla firefox on his computer.  All of that worked when i ran it in safe mode and the computer works fine if i run it in safe mode with networking but if i try to run the computer NORMAL i get an error: 34 message and the entire computer freezes up.  If anyone can help please reply i'm extremely stumped.   Some info on WWW - Google it

Error 34 seems to apply to Real Player or Real Audio Player being behind a firewall  - is either being started at bootup?I can not tell what is coming up at start up.  The computer keeps freezing up whenever that error message COMES up.  Is there a way to view and change settings of programs that initiate at start up while in safe mode?Start in safe mode and remove Realplayer.is it possible that it could be anything besides real player that could be causing the pc to ack this way?It doesn't matter if it's causing the problem or not, remove the realplayer virus & install real alternative.what do you mean by real alternative? like a different media player, or install real player over again? It's a different program that does everything Realplayer does without the virus like 'features' of Realplayer.
Just Google "real alternative" or better still Google
+realplayer +virus  ok i just left his house and real player is not even on his computer, any other suggestions???
What antiviruses and spywares have you used.

Solve : msn 7.0 freezes when outlook express 6 freezes?

Answer»

hello,

i have been using msn 7.0 for a while now (on a windows XP home edition laptop) and it's been working just fine until recently. sometimes when i start my computer, msn wont respond. i do not GET any error message, i just see the icon in the task bar that shows me online, but the main window goes blank and just hangs.

i have noticed that when it happens, outlook express 6 will just freeze on startup and all i have is the blue square of outlook that just hangs there, no error message.

also, when outlook freezes, msn wont work so it seems to work both ways/be related.

so what i did is i ended the PROGRAM and ran it again, but it didnt fix it. i have to restart. sometimes after i restart it works fine and sometimes it freezes again forcing me to restart again.

i must say it is pretty annoying cuz now everytime i startup i worry i'll have to restart.

it started one day without any notice and i didnt do anything different. i ran spybot and nothing seems weird so im really wondering what CAUSES it.

any ideas?

THANKS, marie.scan antivirus, and run Microsoft's AnitSpyware.  UPGRADE MSN, also...i believe there is a new version.

Solve : Win ME boot problem?

Answer»

i have been having recent problems with computer with missing FILES, and instead of fixing them all one by one, im resorted to rebooting my system...
here is that problem: I lost my orginal boot disk i got with my computer (its a shop one not a custom) so i tried to make one from control panne, this didnt work due to the reason why im rebooting (missing files). So i searched for one online, downloaded one.

When i restart my computer, and it runs the boot up from the floppy, it does its stuff for a while then stops with the A;\ prompt... here i just dont know what to do.
Ive tried running the PROGRAMS directly from the flopy, using the file names, but none seem to progress me thurther.

I have my pack of master cd's ready to reboot my system, if only the floppy boot disk worked...

Im not really into this part of computing, so thats probs why this question seems a bit simple.. any way i figured i should ask for help instead of stressing my self out over it by trying to gt it to work using trial and error

any alternative sugestions are welcome ( of me fixing my computer) Quote

Type format C: to erase all data on C: partition or drive. (This is not called rebooting).
Once done, Insert CD-ROM.
type X: (Where X is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
Insert WINDOWS ME and type setup.yes sorry thats the word, reformat, not boot.. im not very good with words sorry.

will try that now then..if doesnt work..yes im using packard bell Quote
Yes sorry that's the word, reformat, not boot.

I will try that now then.

Yes I am using Packard-Bell

I use a Packard-Bell too. Good quality iXtreme from some years ago.

You appear to have lost the RED Packard-Bell bootdisk which you need to do the installing with as it has Smart-Restore on it.

You need a Packard-Bell technical services (ts) bootdisk and you should be able to find one for your computer on the Packard-Bell site.

This will give you the option to do a selective install where you can choose to install your Windows Operating System and Smart Restore only and then, when the basic unattended install is complete you can choose as to which software you want to install.

I would leave out any outdated anti-virus software and use AVG Free Home Edition instead.

Which model of Packard-Bell computer is it, and how big is the drive?

Also, and very important, how old is the drive?
Did you put your RED ts floppy in the plastic wallet containing the THREE Master CDs?

BTW. With newer Packard-Bell computers you can boot to the 1st master CD without the use of a floppy.Try this COMMAND at the A:\ prompt               scanreg/fix

1) font sizes in IE were abnormarly large to the point of running words into each other.

2) graphics on web PAGES (mostly backgrounds) did not display correctly. (i.e. msn.com came up as a white page with one photo in the middle and bizarre text all over the place).

3) when digging a little deeper I thought some of the XP level windows were also out of whack (i.e. the control panel seemed plainer than my own, although that may be her settings).

4) programs that I expected to have "prettier" interfaces were also plain (Norton Antivirus had flat grey buttons and none of the background graphics I'd seen on other computers).

Now, I ain't a computer whiz, but I did run Norton, I ran Trend Micro's free virus scan, and I downloaded and ran Adaware, all of which found no viruses (although they did clear out some spy/malware).  I also downloaded MOZILLA's Firefox which opened up the same webpages with NO problems.  However, after digging through her accessibility and font settings I still couldn't figure out why IE was coming up with garbled text and lacking graphics.  She does have Juno's e-mail and web program installed, but when using that she also had some similar format issues.

Is there some protocol level graphics goof I'm unaware of?  Would Juno's software cause any setting changes?  Would "uninstalling" IE help, and how?  Is there anything anyone can advise to track down this weird problem?

Cheers...

Oh, and as an addendum, I checked that all her XP updates were taken care of, and they were.  As well as viruse/spyware defs up to date.

cheersInstall videocard drivers.Tried reinstalling videocard drivers (Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X), but that hasn't helped it.  It only really appears in Internet Explorer or in other XP windows (for example - when opening the Windows XP troubleshooter, the font is larger than expected) - THANKS for the tip, any other ideas out there?

Cheers

Have her TRY this:

1. Right-click on the Internet Explorer menu bar and choose Customize.
2. In the Customize Toolbar dialog box, have her click the Size icon (it looks like a one capital letter A in front of another with an arrow underneath).
3. Have her click Add and Close.  IE adds the icon to the toolbar.

Check the Buttons tab of Mouse Properties after double-clicking the Mouse applet in the Control Panel.

Someone may be playing a trick on you and switched the primary and secondary mouse buttons, or TURNED on the ClickLock feature.

I have a FRIEND that is running W2K Professional. He says he had a personal PIC as his wallpaper and know that he decided to change it and use another pic as his wallpaper the other pic/wallpaper still shows up when he clicks on CTR-ALT-DEL or when he is LOGGING off or rebooting. It seems that its stuck in the registry somewhere but I don't know where to look or what else to do to change it. Any HELP!He could try selecting 'no wallpaper' ans see if that works, then try the new one?
Make sure he's clicking 'apply' then 'ok' after he sets his choice.
He could also rename or delete his personal pic wallpaper, windows would have trouble DISPLAYING something that isn't there anymore. Thanks Fed! Clicking on NONE cleared out the registry. He's cool now.W2K Rules!.... again.  What! W2K has rules? He should try the Bluescreen screensaver from Sysinternals whilst he's at it.

Solve : Going to do a clean installation of Windows XP?

Answer»

I want to reformat and reinstall Windows XP, cause I've attempted a few repairs and two inplace upgrades and it's a bit glitchy and prone to stop errors now.

Is this guide okay? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/honeycutt_02october07.mspx

Our file system is NTFS, we have the original installation cd and can even load Windows (for the moment anyway). So I think I'm ready to go...

This guide looks ok to me, but it doesn't go well into detail or anything... I'm going to give you the link to a document I personally used to reformat... http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/7509594/Installs/750959408.shtml ... Follow all of these steps, with exception to steps 34-37. Those are extra steps that are only for Gateway users. Hope this helps!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks!  No problem! Let us know if you have any more questions, etc.!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Okay! I have a question...it's telling me that I already have a copy of Windows in that partitioned space, and it's dangerous to install two copies of Windows in one partition, so I think I need to WIPE my hard drive first or something?Wipe the hard-drive, re-partition with the XP SP2 CD and FULL format the first partition before installing. Other PARTITIONS can be made and formatted using XP's Disk Mangement.

I would run the drive MANUFACTURER's diagnostic diskette over the drive and run a test on the RAM modules as a MATTER of course. If the RAM modules need to be re-seated now is the time and then all duxst and debris can be cleaned out of the casing and all fans, etc. checked.

See link below for more info.In that guide it tells you how to format/reformat a partition. Follow those instructions and use them to reformat your old partition.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Man, I feel like I'm in over my head... Read the guide that Flame put up, step by step, it's very good. Maybe even print it out.  There are only a few major steps:

1. Set first boot device to CD-ROM
2. Insert Windows XP CD-ROM
3. Boot computer
4. Choose F6 to install, the INSTALLER will tell you a previous copy is installed. Ignore this message.
5. Repartition and reformat. Instructions are provided by Microsoft on disk.

What steps do you need help with? It's okay, just that intensive instruction page scared me off a bit. We've done everything listed above and right now its formating the new partition for us. Looks like everything's going well.

Thanks so much for the help.

If anything goes wrong, you'll hear me scream for help...Don't hesitate to scream

[glb]Flame[/glb]Okay, itty bitty problem...

It now says "WARNING: Dell's disk Monitoring System has detected that drive 0 on the Primary EIDE Controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive by calling your support desk or dell computer coorporation.

Strike F1 to continue, strike F2 to run the setup utility."

when we start it up. I need to replace my hard drive? WTH?

But it starts and all.

Do I really need to replace my hard drive?  It seems that warning would be there for a reason???

Solve : Computer Thrashing?

Answer»

I would sure appreciate some help on this one:

Windows 2K boots up in normal mode but as soon as I see my DESKTOP I hear the drive thrashing.  The cursor hangs every 10 seconds for about 4 seconds.  After about 30 seconds I get the "Specified I/O operation on Device\Harddisk0\DR0 was not completed before the time-out period expired" window. I click "continue" but files are very slow to open or fail to open when selected.

In Safe Mode, I get a similar start-up but when I hit the "continue" BUTTON on the first Expired Window, things run NORMALLY.  I ran ewido (took a while because the program kept freezing after scanning a few files after which I had to hit the "continue" button) and it came up negative for virus.  Trend Micro, Spy Bot and Ad-Ware just freeze up the system... this all in Safe Mode.

Cooling fans seem to be operating well.  Oh, I have 256 mb ram.

I would love to hear from anyone who has any ideas for me.  My computer skills are VERY average, but I'm learning.

Again, thank you.  This is a great site!!!

Bryan CrippsDo you have any p2p programs?run chdsk in safe mode/download hardrive diagnostics..check the EVENTS log in the admin tools/control panel........BC:

Something is overworking your hard drive, or your hard drive is about to die.

When you say it is "thrashing" do you mean it is making pinging noises, or is it simply making the normal noises it makes when it is working hard?

Did this behavior begin recently?  If so, what changes have been made (such as a new program installed, new hardware added, or modifications made to the operating system settings) just prior to this happening?

Are there many programs starting when you boot the computer?  How much free space is available on the hard drive?

Let us know,
DocHey Merlin & Doc... thank you both for your reply.

OK... no P2P programs, Merlin.  I tried running chdsk in safe mode but it locked up the system.  Do I need to know the maker of my drive to download the hard drive diagnostics?  Is there an easy way to do this without a manual?  I opened the Events Log and it is a list of Warnings and Errors!!!  As I scroll down I get a window that tells me the Events Log is corrupt!!! What's all that about???

The noise is not the norrmal drive running, Doc.  It is a distinct "te-te-te-te...te-te-te-te...te-te-te-te...te-te-te-te."  It started about 20 days ago just as I hit ""Add to Favorites".  There hasn't been any changes or additions to the system.  I'm not sure how to check the number of programs start up at the boot, but I'll work on that.  There is 15.4 GB of free space.

Again, thank you for your help.  I look forward to learning more and hopfully fixing my problem.

All best,
BryanDownload hard disk diagnostics from the hard drive makers website........Hey Merlin...

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 and I believe the drive is by Western Digital.  Went to their site and ran their "Life Guard Diagnostics-DLGDIAG for Windows"  Is this want you are requesting me to do?

The Extended Test immediately started the computer thrashing and everything locked up.  I ran the Quick Test and got a window stating "Failed read test element.  Test not complete."

How can I be sure I have a Western Digital drive?

Thanx again...

Never opened up a computer before and had to go on line to find where all the little catches are!

Anyway the drive is an IBM Deskstar.  I ran the diagnostic program and it came up with Failure Code 0X-70 - Defective Device and a Technical Result Code (TRC) 7000F756.

Any of this mean anything to you?

BryanFor example... "failure code: 0x70 defective device" with a Tech result code: 70009596."

Basically there are one or more corrupted sectors on the drive.

So. Back up your important data OFF the drive FIRST!

Delete the corrupt events logs.

Follow this clean up procedure...

"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs.
(Note: Some Security updates should NOT be removed so check in add-remove programs - before - doing this task.)
Then remove the contents of:

The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder

(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."

EmpTemp & CCLeaner File Cleaner

To make your shutdown work cleanly install the... USER Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Couple of extras here for later...

TweakUI is useful to have on your system for certain repairs... Powertoys/TweakUI

ERUNT-NTREGOPT

Then run chkdsk /r and allow chkdsk to run on a re-boot.

Looks like you need to low-level format the drive, try a program like HDD Regenerator, or simply buy a new, faster, bigger, drive, with a bigger buffer, and whilst you are in there you might as well fit another 256 MB of RAMTo troubleshoot this issue, restart the computer or rescan the disk to try and return the disk to Online status. To rescan the disk, open Computer Management, and then click Disk Management. On the Action menu, click Rescan Disks Quote

Bryan:

Mac is right on--your drive is about to die.  The sound is likely the drive heads hitting the side of the drive enclosure or, worse yet, hitting the platters.  That the event log is corrupt is another sign that the drive is going bad and damaging your files.  That you have an error code after running HDD diagnostics is another sign.

As Mac said, you should save your important files to floppy disks, or a compact disc, or some other storage media. You probably don't have much time left, since this has been going on for several days.

Regards,
Doc

Hey guys...

Thanks for all your help.  It looks like I'm off to the local computer store for a replacement driver.  Always something new to learn.

All best

BryanGo for another 256 MB of RAM if you can, and re-seat the old module before fitting the new one. Quote

The IBM Deathstars had an unreasonably high failure rate, especially the 30 and 40 gig models, and if I were a betting man, I would put ALL my money on that, especially with that sound (known as the Deathstar rattle). Quickly back up all your important data and plan on getting a new hard drive soon.

There is a diagnostics program that IBM/Hitachi had for that, but if it was anywhere near death, it would complete the process immediately. (First hand experience here.)

Mark
Disk Thrashing is caused by an overloaded hard drive and/or not enough ram. Best case, leave 20 percent
free space on your drive ie. on a 100 gig drive less than
80 gig of data would probably solve the problem. Erase
or delete what is not essential 'till you reach that point
If that does'nt do it you may well have to run some
HD diagnostics...Worst case...start backing up and go
shopping for a new HD.
