Solve : How do I copy Windows XP from drive D to drive C?

Answer»

Previously I had a problem with Windows 98.  The software told me that I had to reinstall it.  Instead of re installing 98 I installed XP.  But XP works on drive D.
Drive C STILL has Windows 98 on it which does not work properly.

I need to transfer Windows XP, which is on the D drive to the C drive.  The D drive does not have enough space and I keep getting messages of "low disk space".

I need Windows XP to operate from the drive c.  How can I do this?Fdisk the partition with 98 installed....

[glb]Flame[/glb]How do I fdisk the partition? You can format the C: partition... But I don't think it's a good idea, because C: is the "system disk" and I don't think you'll be able to use your windows (xp or 98) any more. Still, you can make a back-up of your system files that are on C: drive, on a floppy disk, format the c: drive -- in fact ERASE c: drive, recreate the c: drive but with a smaller capacity, START your computer using the floppy with the system files.... Nah, it's by far too COMPLICATED compared with a backup of important files, delete partitions and reinstall Windows.
If I were you, that's what I would do: backup important information, create a partition on which windows will have enough space (and I mean "a lot of free space" for windows xp) and reinstall windows.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308424&sd=tech

if there is nothing on the c drive.......change the drives letter from d to c......or use this>.http://www.ranish.com/part/
are you sure there are no win98 files on drive c:?There are some problems just simply moving XP for D: to C: most of your software installed on XP will become redundant because of registry settings pointing to D: drive.

It is best that you EXPORT your personal settings thru Settings & files wizard. Reisntall Windows XP onto C:

I dont recommend FDISK if you are not familiar with DOS.
XP can create / delete partitions in a lot more simple way from the XP CD during booting of CD. It is a simple selction to make during setup.I've tried to get the option of installing to the c:\ drive from the Windows XP boot disk, however when I put the disk in and the blue screen appears, only one option comes up: d:/ Windows XP Professional.

It does not bring the C:/ drive up which has Windows 98 on it.

Solve : I need help with Administration Account?

Answer» I have the XP pro operating system on my Dell Dimension 2400

On my system I had two accounts "Administration" which I have to

log into and is my "MAIN account."

I also had a guest account which I did not have to log into.

Nor did  I use it..

Sunday I created a different account for me with my first name for another job.

Then I created an account for my mom so she would not get
confused in all of my Documents

I deleted the guest account as Zonealarm would not function for
guest accounts any way and I never used it.

It was cool. I had 3 accounts:

Kirk  - new
Bev   - new account for mom
Administration -   My Main Account

(FYI Both new accounts have administration permissions)

This morning (Monday) When I booted up my pc I was only given the

option to log into the two "new" accounts. My option for Administration is

not available to me.

Also when I go to "control pane" it only lists the two new accounts

So now I cannot get to my Firefox browser where all of my important websites that

I work with are saved. They are all BOOKMARKED with saved usernames and PASSWORDS.

I know that I can get to all of my documents and such.

When I go to "MY Computer it only shows the file for "bev's documents"

and "Kirk's Documents"

I can get to Administrator Documents going to:  C:\Documents and Settings

But what I really need is my FireFox Browser for the Administrations account

How can I fix this so I can log back into my "Admin account"

or at least get my firefox bookmarks

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Kirk

Solve : Invalid Boot Diskette???

Answer»

Sigh...I know absolutely nothing about computers...But I do know that mine's really messed up

When I start my computer it says:

Invalid Boot DISKETTE
Insert BOOT diskette in drive A:

I have no idea what that means...But if I type anything, or push any button, it just keeps repeating itself...

I've been trying to figure out how to fix it, I think I might be in way over my head.  Nothing seems to make sense to me...Because I know nothing about computers.

So if anyone can HELP me or give me any tips, or let me know where I can go to get help, if this isn't the place, that'd be great.Eject the disk in A drive. There is no disk in.Go into bios & set your hard drive as first boot.Sigh...For some reason when I started it up this time...It WORKED...But It's done this before and then just gone back to the error the next time I start it up...Oh well...Thanks a lot for the help.Make a boot disk, it might come in handy later.  What's a boot disk? Why do I need one? and how do I make one?A boot diskette is a diskette that contains useful tools for both experts and novice.

You are often prompted to CREATE one during the installation of Windows 95, 98(SE). However, you can download them as well.

Solve : Help a kid out??

Answer»

I have two very old computers.  One is a desktop-- an HP Pavilion, running on windows 98.  I have the internet on the desktop, and I mainly use this one (the desktop).  But earlier this year I got a laptop from a thrift store.  It's really old.  It's a Compaq Lte 5250.  It has no CD rom drive, and is running on what seems to be an older version of windows 98.  It has no internet connection, but I made use of it by typing up poems and stories and just random things.  Some important some not.

One day, I was getting ready to save all my poems that I had typed up (but had not written on paper) on to a diskette.  Well, somehow my laptop froze up!  So, I decided to press alt ctrl DELETE.  My laptop has a weird Fn key that's in blue letters.  When you press it, it activates other blue keys on the keyboard (ex- the letter U.  When you press FN and Type 'u' you get the number four) so I'm thining maybe I pressed FN ctrl delete (wich is sysrq).  Well, whatever.  I don't know how it happend, but whenever I turn on my laptop now, all I get is a BLACK screen and grey letters that say 'insert boot disk in sysetem-- install boot disk and restart.'

There was no way of getting past that screen, so I made a disk on this machine (my desktop).  I wasn't sure if it WOULD work since it's a different company and all but hey-- windows is windows.  So, I made the boot disk and tried again.  I got past that screen finally but I can't get to my desktop.  I know this is really STUPID, but I'm only thirteen years old, and really want to get back my files.  Even if there's a way I can do it that looses my files, I'm fine with that.  I just need a second computer.

Any help would be grand.

Remember:
-It's a windows 98
-It has NO CD rom Drive.
-I'm only 13, and I'm a little slow.

Thanks so much!Just looking around the internet the Compaq Fn key is a F-unctio-n key that works in conjunction with F keys and some others.

Now that you have a '98 bootdisk, if you get to the choice screen and chose Minimal boot you get to the A:\> prompt where you can type: dir /p , to see if there are any dir-ectories on the drive and press the spacebar to see the next screenful.

So, I don't know what you did but the first thig you could try is to restore a PREVIOUS registry:

Type: A:\>scanreg /restore , highlight a date/time before the incident and click OK.AAAH!  The boot disk doesn't work anymore!  And I ran out of blank disks!   what does holding down the f5 key on boot up do?

Solve : nsis errror?

Answer»

i am trying to install yahoo messenger but it show nsis error how can i remove this errorWhat does this message mean?

The installer has failed a self-check. This means that for some reason, the installer file has been modified from it's original form. If the install were to continue, the software install would not be complete and will be broken. To prevent further problems, the installer refused to continue.

How do I fix the problem?

There are a number of ways the installer can be modified, but we'll cover steps to fix the problem on your end. If all these steps don't work, please contact the developers or publishers of the software you are attempting to install or your normal computer support channels.

If the software was obtained from the Internet
Clear your BROWSER's cache.
Disable any download accelerators or managers and download the installer again.
Rename the installer so it is a simple one-word name with no special characters (without removing the .exe suffix)
Example: install.exe
Download the installer from another source approved by the software developer or publisher.
It might be corrupted on the server, or the connection to the server is unreliable from your location.
Update your anti-virus software (if installed) and download the installer again.
Disable your anti-virus software and download the installer again.
Download the installer using another computer and copy it to the original computer.
If you have the nVidia firewall installed, uninstall the program and download the installer again.
Scan for, and remove malware and viruses on your system.
Scan the hard drive using scandisk, chkdsk, or any other hard drive repair tool.

If the software was obtained from a CD, DVD, or other physical media:
If you are receiving this problem from an installer located on a disc or other media besides the Internet, then the problem may be due to a hardware failure or more likely the physical media being damaged. Try reading files from other parts of the media. If you are receiving read ERRORS with other files on the disc, then the problem is likely due to damaged media. You will NEED to contact the source of the physical media for a replacement.

Final Options
As a last resort, the installer can be executed even though it's corrupted. To bypass the corruption test, PASS /NCRC on the command line. To do so, go to Start->RUN, type cmd and hit Enter. A black console window should open. Drag the installer into the window, hit Space and type /NCRC. Hit Enter again and the installer should start. This is not recommended!

Solve : Windows Office Licence Key?

Answer»

At my office, I used to have a guy who dealt with EVERYTHING computer wise.
He has since left (emigrated to Australia - I can't get hold of him).
I have since expanded the office and implemented a new server and computers etc.
However my new IT guy desperately needs the old office licence codes to configure them to the server and provide a certificate of authenticity (it's a solicitors office and regulations require this).

I believe there is some way to extract them from the registry on each individual computer but i don't want to DOWNLOAD a program to do this (paranoid of viruses).
Can someone give me 'step by step' instructions on how to extract the office licence key?

Quote

Can someone give me 'step by step' instructions on how to extract the office licence key?

There aren't any, since the key stored in the registry is encrypted. I think you'll either have to get a program to retrieve it, or PURCHASE Office all over again. If you are paranoid about "downloading a program" consider a paid for program with TECH support like Keyfinder 2010. In any case, if you are paranoid about viruses, don't you have up-to-date virus protection?
Download and run it.  Does not require installation.

Well, as you can see from suggestions posted, you will have to download some software to do this.  That's shouldn't be an issue.  Belarc has probably been used by millions of computer users.  And, there are numerous reliable sources to download from.  See the license agreement for it at http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard.  The free version is only for non-commercial use.  But, they have other products for commercial users. Um, exactly what is the difference between printing offline and printing online?  By online, do you simply mean being on the Internet?  If so, then are you referring to printing a web page?  Please clarify the offline and online distinction.yes, yes this is what i was trying to say. like i said why is the printing fine on
the .net, copying directly from the printer isn't? i'm almost ready to go back
to manual.   "copying directly from the printer"?

What does this mean? Is your printer an all-in one with a copy function?

Solve : word search?

Answer»

My Internet connection will not let me do a word search.
I am using IE8, WIN XP with Qwest and MSN high speed.
It will connect and my browser shows but no word search.
HELP
jethroI ASSUME you are talking about the 'Search Providers Bar' normally located at the top-right of IE8 which you can quickly type searchs into your favourite search engine(s) rather than going to them from the ADDRESS URL bar, for example 'www.google.com'.

In IE8...

Go to Tools and select Manage Add-ons.

Then select Search providers.

There should be a list of providers, select your favourite ONE, for example 'Google' and CLICK 'Set as Default'.

If you don't see a list or your favour, click 'Find more search providers' which will open a webpage, click 'Add to Internet Explorer' on the one(s) you want and accept.

Tryied that and added Google and Yahoo, made yahoo default. still will not sow in window and still will not let me do word search in WEB search.Get Firefox.  Sorry, I don't have an answer re: IE."word search in web search"? What does this mean?

Solve : computer problems after removing virus.... please help.?

Answer»

hello, i run windows XP and recently had a piece of malware removed from my computer, after removing the virus i RESTARTED my computer.
i cannot open about 98% of web pages...  my internet is not the problem, but it isn't internet explorer either because i installed firefox to see if that fixes the problem.
and suggestions on the problem would be greatly appreciated. You're probably still infected...

Clik Here...i have tried scanning, and rescanning, and a few boot scans with my anti-virus, it doesnt find anything.
i think when it tried to stop the virus it deleted something that may have messed with my computer, and made it so i can not open web pages.Viruses can change a lot, depending on what type...

Check your HOSTS file: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc

Once you have found your HOSTS file, right-click on the HOSTS file, and then select Open. You will be asked to choose a program to use. Select Notepad, but make sure you that you do NOT turn on any option to always use the same program.

Anything else that appears in your HOSTS file WITHOUT an # at the beginning, apart from the "127.0.0.1 localhost" LINE, should be viewed with SUSPICION when we are trying to diagnose the cause of "Page cannot be DISPLAYED" errors. You can temporary comment them with # at the front of the line to check. Reply back if you think there is something fishy added to your hosts.

Sometimes Internet Explorer is unable to access the Internet if software known as Layered Service Provider (LSP) has been removed incorrectly from a computer or previously infected.

Start, then Run and type CMD in the dialogue box that appears, and then click OK. Type netsh winsock reset into the DOS window that appears.

thank you, ill try that as soon as i can.I recommend you backup your important files, reformat your HDD(s), then reinstall your OS.

More could be changed than the HOSTS file. A hacker could have added a backdoor to your security so you'll be easier to infect again in the future.

Anytime your computer is infected to that extent, a clean reinstallation of your OS is generally the most effective and safest cure for the problems caused.

"Step 1: Start NOTEPAD
To stop the print spooler and its files, we will have you create and run a script file that will automatically stop the service. This sounds DIFFICULT, but it really isn't. Just follow these steps carefully.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type notepad, and then click OK. Notice that a blank Notepad document opens.
Step 2: Copy a command script to Notepad
Now we will have you copy and paste some commands to the Notepad document.
Carefully select (highlight) all the following text:
net stop spooler
del %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\*.shd
del %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\*.spl
net start spooler
Right-click the text that you selected, and then click Copy.
In Notepad, right-click in the blank document, and then click Paste.
Carefully select (highlight) all the following text:
C:\DeletePrintJobs.cmd
Right-click the text that you selected, and then click Copy.
In Notepad, click Save As on the File menu.
In the File Name box, right-click, and then click Paste.

Note Notice that this file name differs from most other file names that you might have seen. That is because this file is a command script file.
Click Save.
Step 3: Run the command script file
Now that you have created the command script file, you will run it. To run it, you will copy and paste the name of the command script file in the Run box.
Carefully select (highlight) all the following text:
C:\DeletePrintJobs.cmd
Right-click the text that you selected, and then click Copy.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, right-click, and then click Paste.
Click OK.
Notice that the Command Prompt window opens to run the command script file that you created. Notice also that this window closes automatically when the command script file has finished running. If you do not see the Command Prompt window open, check that you saved the command script file by using the correct name and that you entered the correct command script file name in the Run box.

Solve : IRQL_not_less_or _equal Blue screen?

Answer»

I got this screen today when I was running the Search function. It said windows had shut down and there was a "memory dump"
I restarted my computer and all seems OK, but I wonder why it did this. I have noticed lately that my computer just doesn't seem to have as much power as it used to. It bogs when running too many things. It's several years old, but the hard drives are not even a year old yet.
I Googled the IRQL thing and some posts are saying it could be device drivers or bad memory sticks.
  Any ideas?

Two main suspects for that error:
- overheating
- bad RAMAlso, what driver or file was mentioned?
Usually it will tell you which file caused the problem. I don't remember what it said. If it happens again I'll write it down.
Does memory just go bad over time?
When it happened, the computer had not been turned on very long so I don't think it could have been overheating. Could the problem be from all the other times it got hot in the past?

I think I will replace the memory. I see a large difference in prices. Best buy wanted 150.00 ea! I was expecting it to be about 50-75 dollars ea.  Is there that much difference in quality?
JimLet 'Crucial Memory'  do a scan and see what the memory costs.

RAM can go bad any time.

Correct Crucial isn't a must buy but,a very good site to find the right
memory.I should mention that more often. Thanks for the imput Broni.  Good morning,
Before comming here today I already reinstalled my original memory sticks. 512mb ea. To satisfy my own curiosity I am willing to put the new ones back in and test when I get time, but I'm at WORK so that has to wait. The memtest thing seems a little scary. They say to download and write it to a cd then boot from the cd?
I've never done that so I don't know what to expect.
I did get the Speed Fan and ran it. It says:
    HD.0  37c.
    HD.1  30c.
Core  49.c  ( once it was at 50.c) And a little red fire thing comming on and off.
  Thanks,
JimDon't worry, memtest won't break anything.

As for your temps, are they from when computer is idle?
What type of processor is it? Hold Windows key, and press Pause/Break key to find out. The computer was pretty much idle I guess. Should I load it down somehow?
 Temps right now are:
    HD0  39c
    HD1  34c
  Core   51c
It has  AMD Turion 64 Mobil Processor ML-40 2.2 GHz (windows key pause/break didn't work but I never took the stickers off!)

For the Memtest thing. They say to write that boot disk and leave it in the drive and shut down/boot from the disk. What stops the computer from booting up normally?
JimMax temp for your processor is listed at 95C, so you should be OK.
Quote
What stops the computer from booting up normally?
Boot sequence in BIOS. If floppy drive is listed first, this is where your computer will want to boot from, first. Thanks Broni,
When I get the chance, I'll try the Memtest, (mostly for my own education).Your patience with us nongeeks is much appreciated.

That's what counts the most Hey Broni,
Some time has passed now, I hope you remember this. I still have the "SpeedFan" and have been watching my temps. Right now the core is at 54c, but it goes way up when my machine has to work hard. I just installed an RC flight simulator by Realflight.(G4). The core was at 90c for about 10 minutes. I tilted it up to listen to the fan, and it was running, but then my computer just shut down completely.
I assume that's too hot. Does the CPU or whatever need REPLACING? Can that be done in a laptop, or is it worth it?
I haven't ever cleaned the inside but I don't think the airway is clogged up. If the fan is running and it overheats, what can I do?

Solve : Microsoft XP Wordpad?

Answer»

When I type document in Wordpad, it doesn't create letter size pages automatically, nor can I see how to make it do it.  Everything is continuous text.My Email says I have reply from you, but there is no message. Please resend. Thank you. Quote

it doesn't create letter size pages automatically
What does it create, then?In reply to your QUESTION: what does the Wordpad typing create?, there is no stopping of text at the bottom of what would be a letter size limit.  I have a five page document that just keeps on printing without separation until the end.
Granted, it will produce 5 pages on the PRINTER, but there is no way to anticipate when typing it in, where a normal page ends, or the NEXT begins.
I am guessing it is the nature of the beast, but if so, it is an UNACCOMMODATING thing to have to live with.
Please advise accordingly.  Thank you. Quote

Solve : My Compaq desktop will not finish boot after recovery setup?

Answer»

I had to do a RECOVERY on my Compaq Desk Top, after doing the recovery my computer will not fully boot into Windows XP Home. It goes through the boot sequence up to displaying the Windows Home logo and then it goes no further. I have no idea what is happing, I tried a different hard drive thinking that was the problem, made no difference... Very confusing ... Can someone please give me an idea what could be the problem. I have tried everything I can think of...
hmm this sounds like what happened on my friends computer, check out the mbr( master boot record) you MIGHT have to reinstall again, if you can, try a Linux distribution to force a hard format on the disk, then reinstall xp over it, in ESSENTIALLY a, "from scratch" mode, if it doesn't take either of the distros involved then you may need a a new hard drive,  but if it does, it usually means the master boot record became corrupt some how, and as windows is lazy, sometimes it won't write a whole new boot record as it found a perfectly good one in the recovery, so, you may have to do what I suggest to make the recovery rebuild a new M.B.R. for you from scratch that reflects your current hardware state. QUOTE

I had to do a Recovery on my Compaq Desk Top
How exactly did you do this?I used the 6 recovery disk that I have for my PC...It came with the PC?
If so, that could be trouble...

Do you have the Windows CD?I don't understand why you think the recovery Cd's could be the problem... I have used them before and they worked just fine... No I do not have a windows CD... Everthing is included with the 6 recovery disk...There have been a lot of problems here with users using their recovery CD's.
If you have used them before, then it might not be a problem with that.

Is it possible you can borrow a Windows CD from a friend?were you trying to install xp service pack 3 ?My PC was working just fine then something happened? What component could have caused this to happen. If we can figure this out I should be able to get my PC up and running again... Any ideas... Solve : "me" won't connect to comcast?

Answer»

I have an old laptop with windows Me that my wife uses when I take the new laptop with me on biz trips. I recently had comcast install broadband in my home. Works fine with the newer laptop, but the old one won't connect. Comcast tech said to disconnect POWER from UNIT, wait  minute and reconnect. He said that should allow the unit to read the different laptop... didn't work. Then he had me try ipconfig, iprenew and iprelease. Each time my IP address came up all ZERO's. Comcast tech said I needed to restore ip address, but he couldn't help.
Any ideas? Please give detailed instructions. Thanks JRPWhat order did he have you do the IP Renew and Release in?
Be sure its:
ipconfig /release
then
ipconfig /all
(not the other way around)

Also, on your PREVIOUS Internet connection, did you use an Ethernet connection to your old Windows ME (Millennium Edition) laptop? Or was it a USB or DialUp connection?

Okay, when you switched to Comcast, did you install an Ethernet card into your computer?
Or was there one existing already?

Possible causes:
Ethernet card dysfunctional
Ethernet card drivers not correct

hey friend have a nice day.. Apparently you're asking us a question that was from an examination you either are...or were taking.

Please post system components, operating system and more info about when the HUM occurs. My little Shuttle XPC has an aluminium ("aluminum" for Americans) case and it sometimes makes a humming sound due to the case resonating with the hard drive or fan or something. I find that just pressing once with my hand on the top of the case stops it for DAYS on end. Or I can put something weighty like a 50 stack of DVD-Rs on top of it.

Solve : PC won't start or boot up Windows XP?

Answer»

Hi. I'm from Down Under in Oz (Australia) and am a fair 'old' novice when it comes to PC's and how they work.... as I usually rely on my Work Helpdesk to sort out any IT issues I might have but this time around the problem is with my Home PC.

My home PC is a HP Compaq Presario Model # SR1520AN (purchased in Feb 2006).
The base specs are:

# Processor: Powerful AMD Sempron 3200+ processor (1.8Ghz, 256KB [email protected] cache, 1600 MHz System Bus)
# Memory: 512MB DDR RAM, expandable up to 4.0GB with discard (I upgraded to 1 GB RAM about 12 months ago).
# Hard Drive: 80GB Hard Drive, 7200rpm SATA

It runs Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

Until about a week ago it was running fairly smoothly until my 16 year old son managed to 'freeze' a print job (or so he told me) ... and then he proceeded to hold in the power button to close it down. Since then when I try to boot it up ... it GIVES it a good try and then displays the following screen meassage on a black screen:

We apologise for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, started unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to recent to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe mode
Safe Mode with networking
Safe Mode with Command prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings

Start Windows Normally    (default highlight box on this option)

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

I have tried all the above options... but always come back with the same screen and message.

I have the Option to Press the F10 key and use the PC Recovery Tool... but I don't want to lose all my data and files ... as I haven't done a back up to my external drive for about a month.

I have tried searching the HP website and other sites for advice... but can't quite seem to find the right answer.

As it happens before this disaster I had been thinking about replacing, upsizing or adding in another HDD to my current 80 GB SATA HDD ... so as to achieve a HDD capacity of 160 GB or greater?

Now as it happens ... I suspect this might be my only option? But I've been told that my PC specs will determine what capacity HDD I can up size to? Another PC salesman told me that as my PC is a HP ... I will need to contact HP to purchase a genuine HP HDD?

The bottom line is that I would like to achieve two things if at all possible:

1.  Getting my PC working again (with or without upgrading HDD)
2.  Achieving the above... very ideally without losing my files from my current (original) HDD... as it contains photos I have taken in the past month that I have no other file copy of.

Any help or suggestions to my problem would be most appreciated ... noting the suggestions will need to be fairly 'easy to understand' as I'm a Baby Boomer!!

Also please note its just after midnight in Australia (on Tuesday 26 Aug)... so I may not be able to respond immediately to any suggestions given.

Many thanks

Another very informative and well laid out post.

Anyways, seeing as the apparent cause of this problem was the printer, I would suggest unplugging both the Printer or the Internet Cable (or wherever the printer is connected).
Then try starting up and see what happens.

Do you happen to have the Windows XP CD?1) Follow Carbon's suggestion above.

2) If no success, power down and unplug the computer from the electric supply. Remove everything but the keyboard - yep, mouse, also! Press and hold the Power Button on the computer for 15 seconds. Connect the computer to the electric supply and power on with just the keyboard. Let the computer "countdown," if necessary. Result?

3) If no luck, let us know if you have an XP CD.

4) Quote from: carey57 on August 25, 2008, 08:42:16 AM

But I've been told that my PC specs will determine what capacity HDD I can up size to? Another PC salesman told me that as my PC is a HP ... I will need to contact HP to purchase a genuine HP HDD?
Both of these statements are wrong. You can add any size hard drive that you want made by any manufacturer that you choose. Looks like the motherboard has both SATA and IDE connectors for an additional hard drive. See which ports are available and pick a SATA or IDE hard drive of your choosing.

As an aside, if you just want more storage, you may want to consider another external drive. But, let's get you operational, first

5) In case an operating system "recovery" is in order, you may want to consider an external, USB enclosure for your current hard drive. That way you can remove the drive from your system, place it in the enclosure and connect it to another computer to recover your data. Of course, you can connect the drive internally to another computer, as well, and recover your data. In either case, you will need an enclosure or computer that will have a SATA interface for the drive. The last time I check HP/Compaq only came with a recovery CD that normal wipes the pc and restores it to the factory setting. Since I know you want to keep your data.

I believe you have two options. You could :

1. go out a buy a new hard drive install that and put the current drive in a USB enclosure or just make it your secondary drive.

2. Buy and run a copy of Spinrite from GRC which will most likely recover the drive and the information but cost as much as a new drive($80 us) and will take a few days to run.I've just  followed Carbon Dudeoxide advice and that of drmsucks' advice in #2 below i.e. powered down and removed everything but the key board... but alas to no avail. That is... the same message on the black screen reappears. I did though once again try the Last Known Good Configuration... and as before (though I didn't mention it in my first post) ... the PC brings up the Windows XP Home Edition Screen with the horizontal loading bar ... but it only lasts about 2 - 3 seconds before the monitor goes black, followed by the Compaq screen and then the message screen (and CONTINUES to loop through this order of screens until I close down the PC by holding in the Power button for about 7 seconds).

In regard to #3 ... no I do not have the original Windows XP Home Edition (SP2) CD... as I purchased the PC second HAND and it didn't come with the installation disk. On reflection probably this wasn't a smart way to buy a PC but with five kids at home I took a punt on spending less and up until about now its been a good decision.

I'm pleased with the advice in #4... as it seems I have no alternative but to follow the process set out in #5... which seems sound. Though I assume I will need to find another solution re not having the original Windows XP installation CD.

If anyone has any other alternative advice I'd also be happy to hear it?

By the way is there any chance a virus or Trojan could be the culprit to my problem? Or is it likely to be a hardware failure or software conflict issue with Windows XP?

Though I can google it ... but what exactly is a "USB enclosure" for a hard drive?

Many thanks

As was said HP/Compaq doesn't ship with an OS disc, but instead come with a recovery disc. This recovery disc doesn't have the OS on it either. It accesses a partition on the HDD where there is a copy of the default factory system resides. If you have the computer model and serial number (not sure if you even need the serial number) you can buy get a recovery disc from HP. Unfortunately the recovery disc will reinstall everything back to factory default and you will lose your files. As "CCG" said you might be able to recover your files by installing a new HDD but you'll have to also buy a new full copy of XP or? and then set the old drive up as a slave and you might be able to access the files. A USB enclosure for a HDD is an external enclosure that your HDD would install into and than you would have a USB cable to connect it to your computer. It is the same as an external HDD.Another option if you just can't live without your files is to take the computer to a Tech or Repair (that knows what they are doing) and they can try using the XP recovery console from an XP disc and they would be able to repair the Master Boot Record, Boot.ini, etc and possibly rebuild the registry and that might get you back up. Many thanks for all the advice given. As I don't want to lose my existing data I will be follwing the advice of drmsucks & joefido. Fortunately I have some younger & clueier friends ... and with the advice given ... I'm sure I'll finally get there with a bit of effort & help. So again many thanks to all that has given some input to my issue.     I guess though I'm still a littel unsure what caused the probelm in the first place... as I was my 16 y.o. son that was using our PC when this probelm emerged?  Cheers Carey - 1) A USB hard drive enclosure was explained by joefido and would be like this: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-MX-100-Aluminum-Enclosure-Drive/dp/B000XQDTRW/ref=pd_cp_hg_2?pf_rd_p=413863501&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0007LXR3E&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0JQHMR4PWNT8RBGHB8QZ. I know that you are from down under so used an Amazon link - can you guys buy from Amazon? In any event, you would need an enclosure for a 3.5" SATA drive. I'm sure that you can get one at a large electronics store. The external enclosure is not an 'answer' to the problem, but, rather, a means to save your data.

2) The problem, as you described it, is probably not virus related; probably not 16 year old son related, either! Nothing wrong with holding in the power switch if a computer 'freezes.' But, with any 'non-normal' shutdown (power failure, holding in the power switch, etc) there is a risk of file/data corruption on the hard drive.

3) You don't need to own an XP CD; can you borrow someone's disk? Be sure that it is an SP2 disk. We would use it to perform some "repair" operations.

4) If you can't get an XP SP2 disk, I would remove the hard drive and recover the data from it. Then I would re-install the hard drive into the computer and invoke the Recover operation (F10?). This will erase (delete) everything on the drive and put the machine in the software state (including XP) that it was in at the time of first purchase. Your current problem should now be gone. You will need to re-install your programs and data and update Windows. Be sure to install and update an antivirus program before you access the internet. (There are many free anti-malware programs, ask if you would like to know where to get them.)

5) For futures, you may want to check with HP on the price of recovery CD's for your system. Contrary to suggestions above, these recovery CD's will be able to restore your computer to its original state, including the operating system. In the event of a hard drive failure, you will need CD's because the 'recovery partition' (F10) on the hard drive will not be accessible.

6) Best of luck and let us know how you make out!Hi drmsucks

Many, many thanks for your comprehensive advice... and in short I tried to follow your advice in Point 3... but alas as yet my PC is still not up & running.

Anyway as it currently stands  ... I went to a trusted friend that's helped me before with my PC ... as the plan was to use his Windows XP HE SP2 install disk to hopefully 'repair' the corrupted file(s) ... as per your advice ... without the need of first extracting the HDD, copy (save) the needed files, etc.

Anyway, in short, despite CHANGING the BIOS to read the CD-ROM drive first on start up; followed next by disconnecting the HDD from the motherboard ... each and every time we got the same message: "CDBOOT: Can't find NTLDR"

What we expected (hoped) to see was a message like "Press any key to boot from the CD..." and then follow it from there to hopefully repair the corrupted file(s). Please note his disk wasn't an  "original" ... though he advised me he had used it many times to good effect on his own PC).

So I'm guessing my next step is to follow your Point 4... as I know (or at least I assume) the F10 - PC Recovery Option is still an available solution to me ... as the PC will open up to a HP "PC Recovery" PAGE / screen (presumably from the partitioned area on the HDD) .. .though I haven't pressed the "continue" button for fear of auto starting a process that will wipe all of my data & files.

As I still might be a little ways off in organising the saving of my files from my existing HDD ... to get my PC going it as simple as purchasing a new SATA HDD and having it formatted & Windows XP SP2 installed? Or can I expect some other unforeseen problem in getting it going i.e. a motherboard issue or somethin else.

I apologise for my ignorance in these matters ... but as I stated in my first post a week ago I'm a real novice when it comes to PC and how they work ... but have picked up some new learning in the last week!!

Many thanks in anticipation.

Cheers
I'm sorry that your friend's efforts did not solve your problem; not unusual to have issues with a non-genuine Windows CD, however.

I think that there are now three logical courses of action, assuming that you cannot borrow a genuine XP SP2 disk:

1) Remove your existing hard drive and place it in a USB enclosure or another computer to recover data; then place it back into the your computer and do an F10 Recovery.

2) Purchase Recovery disks from HP; then you can 'Recover' onto a new hard drive.

3) Purchase Windows XP and install it onto a new hard drive.

Of course, 2) and 3) can be installed onto the old hard drive, as well.

There are no guarantees - most likely the issue is a corruption of key Windows files, but, there could be other causes. From the sequence of events that seemed to have caused the problem, I would not suspect the motherboard. But, in the event that I am wrong, and there is some hardware problem, I would choose option 1 because it is the cheapest.

Further, I would have my friend put the drive into his machine (assuming he has a SATA port; and, assuming you trust him to see your data) and recover the data onto a portable hard drive, flash drive, website or CD's. While the hard drive is in his machine, he can download the diagnostic software from the drive manufacturer's website and test the drive - potentially, the software could 'fix' the files. But, back up your data first

I know that you had contemplated the purchase of a new hard drive before this problem and that now might seem like an appropriate time to get one. I would urge you to be sure that the system is 'back to normal' before you spend the money.

Be sure to let us know what you did and how you made out. If you have any questions, please ask.

It's an issue with the drive image HP used for the operating system - even on the AMD configurations they included an Intel driver that gets 'activated' with SP3. Perhaps they used a different image on earlier drives. Before you update your mother's computer, check the HP (Compaq) website and see if you need to apply a patch prior to UPDATING. Solve : XP SP3 - current views??

Answer»

Since SP3 started I have heard mixed reports but seemingly more BAD than good.

Of course IIRC there was an issue with AMD and some other things but I'd be interested to know folk's take right now after it has been available a good while.

Anyways - please post if you will - good or bad experience (and ugly!)?  And expand on that with problems if any and what type etc.  I'd be interested to know an overall impression.  Right now I am holding off from it - too leary to risk it!

First time I have wanted to place a POLL and danged if I can see an option.
IMHO...
1. If computer is clean, and kept up to date, SP3 should install with no problem.
On the other hand...
2. SP3 is more, or less a bag of updates issued between SP2, and SP3, so if you installed all previous updates, you can live without SP3.Thx Broni - yeah, my updates are totally up to date - in fact when I downgraded from Vista to XP Pro coupla months or more ago - I went thru more updates then than you could shake a stick at!  Just to catch up.

Since ''getting up to speed" then, I have taken all updates, except SP3!In that case, I'd leave it alone.heres a question:  if my comp said that it downloaded service pack 3, but never installed it, then i canceled it, then did a system restore to a time before I did this, is it not on my computer? haha im pretty sure I dont want it Quote from: iamtonsoffun247 on September 01, 2008, 09:52:20 PM

heres a question:  if my comp said that it downloaded service pack 3, but never installed it, then i canceled it, then did a system restore to a time before I did this, is it not on my computer? haha im pretty sure I dont want it

If you simply prevented the install then it shouldn't be there anyways - without any roll back.

I'd suggest to most folks who want to stay in control - to not let updates go on full auto install - go for custom and make decisions as to what you want or not. Quote
but never installed it, then i canceled it
This part is unclear. You canceled what exactly?I am imagining updates were all downloaded but install of SP3 was negated/cancelled.

Am I right?well it showed it fully downloaded (but never actually said DONE.... the green bar was full, then was empty and the icon in my toolbar said 0% downloaded).... im bad at explaining stuff...... so at that point, i canceled. As long, as installation didn't start, you shouldn't have any traces of it.XP SP3 includes all current updates since SP2 to SP3's release dates, plus NAP and some other features INCLUDED with Vista.
IMHO, if you're fully updated and won't use NAP, no need to install it.
If you were starting from SP0, 1 or 2, you should install it simply because it's less hassle than installing all the individual updates.
I've not had any problems with SP3 at all with any of my machines. You can quickly see if what Service Pack is intalled on you Windows XP computer buy opening the control panel and double clicking the System icon.  I think the Service pack three files are downloaded 'on your computer' hard drive somewhere although it SOUNDS LIKE you cancel the installation of these files, so their not 'in your computer' untill you install them.

Of note with the SP3 .  There seems to be a problem with certain AMD HP computers. http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2008/05/15/hp-tells-consumers-to-sit-tight-and-not-install-xp-sp3

Hope this helps, Friend!
I downloaded SP3 and a lot off applications didn't work properly, I got rid straight away, nightmare! It's sitting in a Temp file somewhere....if you run CCleaner it will be gone...I have installed it on three computers - zero problems. Follow the instructions - disable AV and anti-spyware before installing.

This was not the 'fault' of SP3 or MS.

Solve : Clean install of Windows XP Home?

Answer»

I have problems in running Windows XP Home.

So, I have decided to have a "Clean" install of Windows XP Home.

Please advise.

Thank you. What advice are you looking for?I would like to have the instructions so I could print them out.

1) Make sure the cd drive is the first device in the bios boot order
2) Insert the XP CD and reboot
3) Choose the option to format before installing (if you're not in a rush, let it do a "full" format INSTEAD of a "quick" format so it can check the DRIVER for ERRORS)
4) Install the OS
5) Once the OS is INSTALLED and you are able to boot to Windows, install all drivers beginning with the Chipset driver (then video, audio, NIC if applicable)
6) Install a GOOD anti virus utility and allow it to update
7) Go to Microsoft Updates and install all updates, including the latest service pack if needed

Solve : Running installed programs after windows XP reinstall?

Answer»

I just finished reinstalling Windows XP to correct a registry issue and now I am scratching my head trying to figure out how to get the programs back on the screen when ONE clicks on All programs from the Start button.  I have all the programs backed up on an external drive and they are still there after the install they just don't show from the All programs options. Any fairly easy way to do this? When you re-install XP you need to re-install all your APPS for them to work properly...
Unless you did a Repair Install...
What steps EXACTLY did you take here ? ?

PS. The new install has no idea they were installed to the external drive even though it can see them.
Registry entries are needed to tell it that.
There was a way you could have accomplished this but unfortunately it's too late now...You got a "clean" installation of Windows XP (new install).  You need to reinstall the APPLICATIONS from their installation files (the source downloads or CD/DVDs).

Once installed, you may be able to move old APPLICATION "data" to the new installation if you can determine where they belong in the directory structure.  This would be done one application at a time.

Solve : Internet Explorer interference?

Answer»

Dell Dimension 2100/ 256 MB Ram/ O.S. Windows ME
When signing on to aol and the welcome screen opens up, periodically a blank page of Internet Explorer cascades onto the screen and continues until either the pc is turned off or the memory is exhausted. This seems more likely to happen while viewing an aol news item, poll question, ETC.
Internet Explorer is not the primary browser, AOL Explorer is.
Appreciate any help: oldcousin.I'm guessing upgrading to xp is not an option, nor is chucking AOL out the door, both my recommendation.

ME was nothing more than a profit booster for MS, its probably their worst offering ever (IMO), very thin-shelled,  the ONE version of windows that has the LEAST amount of experts on, heck i remember when it came out i went backwards to 98-or-forwards to win2k pretty quick.

AOL is not known in the industry (unless you only ask them) as having bulletproof applications. I've personally experienced endless problems with their software.
Being an AOL user, I'm guessing your stuck with their "protection" as well. Again, anything but bullet-proof.

I'd suggest going to the mighty AOL for support on this-after all, its OCCURRENCE, as you imply, is directly related to their own application launch. AOL has a long, long, long, long, long history of problems working alongside Internet explorer. If this TRULY is no longer the case, they should have a quick resolution for you.
IF they don't, please reconsider "chucking it"
How to Disable Internet Explorer

http://www.techsupportalert.com/how_to_disable_internet_explorer.htm

There are several disabling techniques but I suggest the method below as it's simple, easy to reverse and doesn't interfere with the operation of the Windows Update service. Furthermore it should work with any modern version of IE.

Step 1. From IE select Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings.

Step 2. Put a tick in the check box next to "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN ...”
Step 3. Type in "0.0.0.0" in the address box and "80" in the Port box. Don't type in the quote marks of course, just what's inside them.

Step 4. Click OK.

What you've done is SET up a dummy proxy server 0.0.0.0 that goes nowhere. With these setting IE cannot make an HTML connection to the internet and vice versa. You have simply and effectively disabled IE.

There's no magic in the 0.0.0.0 address, any dead proxy address would work just as well. I've used that particular address to keep things simple.

If you ever need to re-enable Internet Explorer start it up and select Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings from the toolbar and un-check the box "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN ...”

[Upgrading to a new operating system with the present computer is not  the best move I fear. It has done quite well for my needs for 8 years so I think a new computer with the latest  O.S. is the best route. The problem with Win ME is too MANY bells and whistles for my requirements. AOL has been acceptable except for all the trash that the user has to put up with. but they all might be the same way.

Solve : Deleted a partition--no boot--need to edit MBR??

Answer»

Hi all,

I received a used laptop about a month ago.  It came with Windows and LINUX.  I don't know how to use Linux and I was running out of disk space so I deleted the Linux partition and resized the DRIVE.

Now Windows won't load after I reboot.

It gives me:
"
GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 22
"

I downloaded 'NTFS for DOS' from bootdisk.com.  I can access C drive under DOS.  I can't use FDISK function.  It returns with 'Bad command or file name'.

I'm not sure what I'm doing but I edited boot.ini to the following setting:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" /fastdetect

I've tried what I can by searching online.  I am not very computer savvy.  Anything else I can try to get me to boot to Windows again?

Thank you for any suggestions. The GRUB loader has to be removed properly...do you have a Windows CD ? ?Yes.  I try to run the winnt.exe file in the i386 folder in the Winxp disk but it doesn't work.

It takes me to the blue setup screen and gives me the following:

Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader.

Ensure that your C: drive is formatted and the drive is not damaged.

Setup cannot continue.  Press ENTER to exit.

Chkdsk shows the disk working fine.
It was formatted to NTFS.

I don't want to lose the data on the hard drive.  How do I fix this without reformatting my drive?

Thanks for any replies.

Change rdisk, then see what happens

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" /fastdetectI edited the values to 0.  It still won't boot or let me repair XP.  Chkdsk shows no bad sectors and drive is formatted NTFS.

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional " /fastdetectHook up the drive as a slave and retrieve your important data...
Slave Drive Info...

Then insert the XP CD and boot to the Recovery Console...let it finish loading.
At the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

If no joy-joy repeat the above procedure...
At the prompt type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the CD and re-boot.

Solve : Can't Delete File Type Action (Probably an Easy Fix but I'm stumped)?

Answer»

Ok. Here's my problem:

In Windows XP in Explorer go to Tools>Folder Options>File Types>Select "File Folder">Then click "Advanced"
Now you are where I am at.

What I have done is entered a new action for "File Folder" when I meant to enter the action for just "Folder". Unfortunately, I am UNABLE to remove the action I entered. There are SEVERAL actions that I am unable to remove.  How can I remove them?

The action I created is titled "Create File Listing" and I want to remove it but it does not allow me as the "remove" button is grayed out. Can SOMEONE please show me how to remove this action?

THANK you

[attachment deleted by admin]System Restore?Seems like that the answer to everything. When in doubt, reverse everything because no one knows how to do anything in the registry. But no. It takes a little more experience to fix the issue.

After finding a place with geekier people, I have since fixed the problem myself.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell] was set to "OPEN" or "FIND" and you can't change it in the actions list. So you have to edit the registry.  All I had to do was replace the Value Data with "NONE"

Problem solved.I'm sorry for not being geeky enough....Should return his joining feeThe refund check is in the mail as we speak...

Solve : XP wont log in??

Answer»

So, my laptop was plugged into my wall charging.  My dog ran by and hit the cord, which pulled the computer to the ground.  The computer powers up and goes to the XP login, but wont go anywhere past there.  What sort of hardware could be damaged.  Is it worth taking in to get fixed(warranty has EXPIRED)? Or just get a new one?

Any help would be great.
JohnThe hard drive doesn't have a needle. In fact, the platter and the head never touch. That doesn't mean the hard drive isn't damaged though.

However, seeing as the computer boots up to the Windows XP Logon SCREEN, the hard drive is most LIKELY fine.

JohnO, if you have the Windows XP CD, try performing a Repair Install:

Solve : Computer Only Restarts with Black Screen, and thats all it does.?

Answer»

Computer info: Gateway 835 GM
               Windows XP

Before I present my problem, I want to say that I am pretty much a noob here at trying to fix a computer, and the only thing I've done with a computer as far as with my expertise with computers is install a hard-drive.

So before the bigger problem came about, the computer was already infected with a Trojan , so I tried to find some solutions but with no luck- so I was stuck with the Trojan but the pc was still kind of OPERATIVE but with slow internet speed.

After more than a half a year, still operating in the same condition, it came to an end when my sister turned on the computer and it started abnormally.  All it does it goes in to a black screen with things saying

"We apologize...recent hardware/ software change might have cause this."
"Computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect you        files...start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure.."

         Then it has the options:
            Safe Mode
            Safe Mode with networking
            Safe Mode with Command Prompt

            or
Last know Good Configuration (your most recent settings that work)

            or
            start windows Normally

I tried every one of the options and each of every option I get brought back to the black screen with options.
My father took it to get it fixed but to no avail, only option is recovery/reformat which is what sister and I do not want- at all.
Is there any way to retrieve the data? or could this be a power supply problem?

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated to find the problem or have a solution.

I also wanted to note that where I live I do not have computer with internet so I'll be replying elsewhere- it could take a while to reply, so bare with me.  Thanks in advance. Quote

My father took it to get it fixed but to no avail
What kind of place was it? What happened?
Do you have Windows CD?Office DEPOT is where it got taken and they said that they werent able to fix it or recover any data with their programs. The only way to fix it is by replacing the hard-drive or do a recovery.  And the computer did not come with Windows CD, unfortunately.      Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

I canno't install Imgburn, I get an error( Error opening for writing:...) is it because the computer I am using has a problem, maybe with a virus?Try different computer.I typed in the 3 commands (H:/>ATTRIB -H C:BOOT. INI etc.) and I get a response that "the file can not be opened" for all 3 commands.

Do I proceed with the next step of deletion H:/>Del Boot.INI? and is it necessary for me to type in "H:/MiniNT>C .." to get to the basic root?Make sure, the command are IDENTICAL. For instance...
It's not:
H:/>ATTRIB -H C:BOOT. INI
but
H: ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini
Every letter, sign, and space matters.I still get same response when I have typed in ...

"Which Windows installation would you like to log onto
? 1
H:MiniNT>cd ..

H:ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini

H:ATTRIB -H C:\\BOOT.INI

H: ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini (w/ space in front)

and

H: ATTRIB -H C:\\BOOT.INI"

What could it be?It may be the infection blocking the access.
I'm afraid, there is not much more, we can do here.
I'd suggest slaving the drive in another computer to retrieve data, and formatting the drive afterwards.
Instead of slaving, hard drive enclosure can be used. What is the difference? or a better question, which option is more efficient in retrieving the data?
Hard drive enclosure is easier to use. You remove bad drive, put it into hard drive enclosure, which you connect to working computer through USB cable.I went to the store and there was a variety of hard drive enclosures, price ranging from $10 to $50 and up.  Is there a specific enclosure that I NEED?

Also, when I remove the bad drive and insert the hard drive enclosure- is the bad drive connected in any way to the hard drive enclosure?

Just unclear on the "how" part on recovering the data. All you need to know is, if your drive is IDE, or SATA type.
IDE:

SATA:

Note the different connectors.

If any doubt, buy an enclosure, which is IDE/SATA compatible (it has two sets of cables)

Inside, you connect data, and power cable:

close the enclosure, connect USB cable between the enclosure, and your computer, connect enclosure power cable to the power source, power up computer, and you're good to go.
