Solve : Replacing Hard Drive - Told motherboard will not be compatible with XP pro?

Answer»

Hey! Can anyone offer any information on the following:

Here's the deal: Bought all singing dancing powerful PC few months back, and asked that XP pro be installed as I disliked Vista so much.

My main hard drive froze and died last week, so I was planning to just buy a new one and re-install XP.

I've been told (by someone who WANTS to charge £50 for this) that it's not that simple and he would have to write some code to allow me to install XP as the motherboard wont be compatible as it would have been configured for Vista...

Is this true? If so, what is this code? Is it in the BIOS? Or am I being taken for a fool on this one?

Replies, etc., really appreciated, thanks  probably BS. there would be no "code" to write.

As an example, I recently bought a laptop- it came with vista. as an experiment I put XP, XP64, and Vista on it, in a triple-boot configuration.

XP installed and runs just fine. The only change I had to make was to set the SATA CONTROLLER to "compatible" so that the XP setup will see it as an IDE drive, meaning I didn't need SATA drivers.

If you're computer is anything like mine, or various other modern machines, chances are your paying 50 dollars for them to toggle a single setting in the BIOS, and install XP- both things you can do yourself for free.

Also, one can assume that they would need to find drivers for the machine as well- not an EASY task, but it's surely not "writing code" as they claim- rather it is a few google searches. As strange as it may sound, I was able to find and install drivers for everything in all OS's except the modem, which installed fine under XP32 and XP64 but not with Vista.

It really matters how much your TIME is worth. Sometimes doing it yourself can take hours- and sometimes you might even have to start over. Thanks for that - kinda confirms what I thought.

I'll have to read up a little on SATA & IDE's etc, and I should be on my way  Quote from: Rxprn on March 22, 2009, 09:06:04 AM

Seems to be the general opinion - I thought it sounded dodgy!

Solve : icons are cloning themselves on my desktop?

Answer»

I created a folder to moved some files to and it has started cloning itself.  The folder itself isn't cloning but the icon looks like a blank notepad with copy 450 and so on underneath it.  When I delete the icons, send them to the recycle bin and empty, the empty space on my desktop is filled up with more cloned icons with a higher copy number.  I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum.  I've never seen this before and wasn't sure what topic it would fall under.  Thank You for any help!Cristecs,

The only time I have seen such an exponential increase in icons and/or files is when the user uses the DRAG and DROP method of moving files.

Backup and start over.

Remove the files ( if you still have a copy of the files  in the original folder ) in the new folder and remove the folder.

Always use a copy procedure and not a move procedure. We can delete the original files when the copy to the new folder is correct.

Use the window copy method or the DOS copy method.

Copying files via the Task Pane
http://www.geekgirls.com/absolute_beginners_06.htm

To copy a file using the Task Pane, the PROCESS is identical to moving a file except you select the Copy This File option in the Task Pane instead of the Move This File.

For beginners, it’s often a good idea to copy files rather than move them. That way, if something goes amiss you still have the original file in its original location. Once you’re sure the new file is safely tucked away in the new location, you can always delete the original.

The process for copying and moving multiple files is the same as for copying and moving single files, except that you must select all the files you wish to copy/move. The EASIEST way to do that is to hold down the Ctrl key while clicking each file you wish to copy or move. If you accidentally select a file, you can unselect it by keeping the Ctrl key depressed while clicking it once more. Once you’ve selected all the files, you can release the Ctrl key, then click the Copy The Selected Items or Move The Selected Items task in the Task Pane.

The Dos copy is much easier and safer.

copy  c:\oldfolder\*.txt   c:\newfolder\

The above will copy all text files ending with .txt form the oldfolder to the newfolder.

Good Luck

Solve : Laptop slow to hook up with wireless connection?

Answer»

My HP laptop takes forever to hook up with my wireless connection after I click on the Internet Explorer icon. Most times it will finally hook up but sometimes will fail and I GET the "not responding" message. After hook up does occur, browser speeds are normal. I have a broadband cable ISP and I'm running Windows XP. Its just that initial hook up when I first click IE icon that takes so long. Is there something THATS turned off or on thats not supposed to be? Somebody help me Maybe you have extra programs that running that slowing you computer down when starting up. Start/AllPrograms/Startup and delete whatever in the start up menu. This will not delete anything off you computer but TAKE it out of the start up menu.

Solve : Slack Space?

Answer»

I know that every time you create a file in Windows XP or earlier that the file uses at least one cluster on your hard drive. Whatever doesn't FILL up the cluster becomes "unallocated" space in the file. That space is filled up with various RAM or other file data because the file system must top off the file and fill it completely. This "slack" data not intended for the file is there on the hard drive but is not read when you open the file for viewing. Only special software can view that data. But, lets say that once the file is created, you LATER DECIDE to burn that file to a CD or DVD. The file that burns to that CD or DVD... are you burning the ENTIRE file (including the "slack" data? I ask this to find out whether or not file recovery software would be able to view the "slack" data on the CD/DVD you just burned.    Whe you USE a burning program to burn files on a hard drive to a CD or DVD, the burning program reads the logical file from the hard drive file system. Data contained in the file slack areas is not visible to the burning application.

Solve : I AM SO CONFUSSED!?

Answer»

hi
so ive been constantly getting the blue screen errors and everything
i look at forums and they said it migt be your memory so i did memtest
within 3 seconds it said i had an error with my RAM
i looked at their site and they said it might be my memory card

does this mean  i need to get a new memory card???MAYBE you do. that sounds like faulty ram. If you have a 2nd pc to test the rams in you can double check that it's definitely faulty.Any errors at all with MemTest means a bad STICK of RAM...
Repeat it one stick at a time to find out which one is bad.

Travel to Crucial.com and RUN the online scanner to find out what you may need for a REPLACEMENT.

Solve : Needle in the haystack?

Answer»

hi all, im losing my mind with this.........i want to make sure i can get what i need before i build my first system.....
i want windows xp home edition......i see it all over for about 85 bucks but is always the oem version. I want the retail version n case my hard drive takes a dump or i want to install on 2nd pc. I also dont want to spend alot, im sure we all feel that it shouldnt be that uch money and nobody likes lining microsofts pockets.....i have found xp home retail for 88 bucks, but no service packs.....so im trying to see if i can get that and then download sp1 an 2 (i dont want sp3, as ive had a few problems with that on another system and had to delete it)....anyway i cant SEEM to find the downloads...? i see something called internet explorer sp1 download on the ms website but i dont think that is whatim looking for......does anyone know where i can d/l sp1 and sp2 for free...? Quote

.does anyone know where i can d/l sp1 and sp2 for free...?

yes

Click Start then All Programs and select Windows update. All of the service packs are there.HOLY SH!# .......
Thank you!

ps. nice dogJust so you know...with the Windows liscense....one copy =one machine.
You can't activate it on 2 machines whether it's Retail or OEM...
Someone misinformed you.
Also there is no limit to how many times you can reinstall it.
However if you make major hardware changes down the road you will have to run a Repair Install and/or re-register it with MS.If you buy/bought a recent edition of Windows XP, it probably will already have SP2 installed.  However, if you need to get/install SP2 as a separate step (for a legitimate installation of Windows - see patio's comments), you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

BTW, if I were doing a new build, I think I'd install SP3.  If any problem arises, at least you're working with a system in which you haven't accumulated user files yet.  So, nothing to lose by having to UNINSTALL SP3 or possibly starting over with the installation of Windows.I wholeheartedly agree with soybean ...

SP3 CD Order

P.S. If your XP CD only has SP1 you will be able to skip SP2 and just install SP3...another time-saver.awesome info guys, thanks.....
as far as sp3, i did think of that but if i buy xp with sp3 and have problems can i use that same disk to install xp WITHOUT sp3 or would i have to buy another disk?
also, with respect to "one copy one machine"....what if a hard drive GOES and i need to reinstall...? everything i read says you cannot do it with oem but you can with retail version? It can be done.
Hardware fails and MS understands this.
As long as you are legit you have no worries.

As far as installing without SP3 i doubt it can be excluded from an SP3 install CD ...
Why are you so concerned about SP3 ? ?
It had issues very early on but those have all been addressed.my concern is this...... about 2 months ago i wanted to clean up, update and install virus and zone alarm on WIFES pc......windows update came on and i clicked update automatically all...which i dont usually do.....after it updated with sp3 i had major performance problems that when i deleted sp3 went away...upon searching the 'net i found many similar problems to the ones i had with sp3.......   to be on the safe side i want to stay far away fom it, especially when BUILDING a brand new system that i dont want any issues with

Solve : "Unknown Disk - Error"?

Answer»

Sorry for a long post, but the problems have been mounting and I want to be clear with what's wrong...

A while ago my computer stopped functioning. After playing a game, I left and came back to find the screen black, so I hit the hard restart button, and it got to the screen with the Gateway logo but when that ended and it should have flashed to the Windows Loading screen, it just went black with a blinking white _ . I tried hard restarting several times, and each time it would go to the black screen with the white blinking _. It shows the BSOD. Even trying Safe Mode only got me a little bit farther - I could get past the gateway loading screen.

Finally I decided the best THING to do would be to reformat.

Here is where my current problem lies. The drive is plugged in properly and is brand new, so I know it's not a dud. But, when I boot up with the Windows XP Home installation CD and get to the point of selecting which drive to install Windows on, the options is: "Unknown disk (there is no disk in the drive".

Once again I tried to install Windows, and it gave me the same message (Unknown disk). I thought for a moment that maybe it was because the hard drive was bad, so that’s why I bought a new one. When the new one came in the mail, I put it in and the same problem happens.

So now I'm at an impasse - neither of my drives, one of which worked fine not too long ago and one of which is brand new, is being recognized by Windows setup, and I don't know what to do next.

I do have to apologize if I said some stupid things or if I ask some stupid questions in the future - I'm fairly LITERATE with computers and comfortable working on them, but I'm mostly self-taught through trial, error and Google. Thus, SOMETIMES I realize I've missed something really basic and I'm sort of up a creek. At this point though, I'm pretty much in over my head and very, very frustrated; I'm past being angry, I'm just deflated, tired of working on it and ready to call it quits. I need this machine up and running as soon as possible so any help is greatly appreciated.

Here are the relevant system specs
Motherboard: Motherboard UMA RS690T HDMI (FRU)
RAM: 2GB DDR2
Processor: Intel Centrino DUO Core
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1270
HDD: 250 GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive

More Specs here.
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Tempest/1014770R/1014770Rsp2.shtml

-
Thanks in advance for any help.
The new HDD was probably not formatted from the FACTORY and therefore Windows does not recognise it...
DLoad and run the disk prep utilities from the drive manuf. site...Well the same problem happens to my old hard drive. But ill try that too.

Oh, your homepage is changed to yahoo.com? If so just click Tools, then internet options then change the default homepage and click ok.Yahoo is not a program...it's a Start Page.
Change the start page to what you want.

NOTE: Yahoo uses IE as it's Browser...if you are unhappy with it use FireFox or another browser. You should just use FireFox anyway because it is better by default.

Solve : Is encrypting and self-deleting a file possible??

Answer»

I want to encrypt an IMPORTANT file and send it over the internet...but the problem is after the recipient views it I want it to self destruct or something like that for obvious security reasons. So my question is whether there is any software or method to encrypt a file and ADD some self-destruct code to it which will delete the file after a period of time...or even if there is only a way to just self-destruct the file?unless you wrap the data inside an executable....

maybe something like:
handle=shellexecute somedatfile.ext
if handle is closed then delete somedatfile.ext

but the data will still be in the mail server for example if you send it via email.

now, the problem is how to attach a file to the end of an executable??You could simply send a link to view the document which you retain on your P.C.

Then you CONTROL when the file is deleted or the link is cancelled.

There remains the "security hazard" that the other party can take a screen shot, just as they could if you sent a self-deleting file.

Alan
thanks for your responses...but it seems that it is pretty difficult to do what i wanted to do. so i THINK i would'nt want to risk sending this file anymore...ill find another way sooner or later. thanks once again!

Solve : new problem viewing videos on forums?

Answer»

I did attempt to do a SEARCH, but the way I'm wording it is too broad, and I am not sure how to make is more succint.  So here's my question:

I recently added a virus protection system. I am not sure if this happened right after that, or earlier. The PROBLEM is that if I am on a forum, (www.rcgroups.com for example), and there is a post with a youtube video, I used to be able to see it and click on it and watch it. Now, all I see is a blank box with a little square on the upper right hand side with a red square, green circle and blue diamond. Why is this happening?? Thank you

I would appreciate if anyone can guide me on how to fix this.

ThanksAdditional info.

On some forums there is in yellow writting, the name of the video, and if I click on it, it goes straight to youtube.   Below this is the large blank square with the little square on the upper left hand with the square, circle and triangle.

I am running xp and internet explorer, I think the latest version.

Thanks again.
Hi,
Could you please check the version of your internet explorer.

by clicking on help (on the menu bar of the internet explorer) , then select about internet explorer.
Internet explorer 7Same thing in Firefox?
What AV program was installed?NOt sure what AV is there.

I did change to IE 8, but same thing, now the only difference is the little square with the square, circle and triangle has changed.

Anyone?AV = antivirus
Same thing with Firefox?Could be a simple setting in IE7...

Go to Tools/Internet Options, Security tab, then click Custom level.  You're going to need to scroll down a bit and find Display video and animation on a web page that does not use external media player.  Is that setting enabled?  If not...try enabling it.

Could also be a problem with your flash player plug-in.

Make sure you're running the latest version from Adobe:  http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.htmlWell, thanks for the suggestions.

I did both, installed the newest flashplayer, and enabled the thing you told me to enable.

No change.

Any ideas?

If it's really a Flash problem, uninstall it first then  re-install.  Known fault.A new anti-virus has been installed.

Its alleged purpose is to deal with some sort of malware.

If this unknown (to us) antivirus encounters something it does not like,
it should respond somehow.
Its response could be an ALERT and/or quarantine/cripple the suspect.

Perhaps it does not like Youtube videos, and either as a deliberate ploy to alert you, or an accidental side-effect of "sanitizing" the video, I quote :-
"Now, all I see is a blank box with a little square on the upper right hand side with a red square, green circle and blue diamond."

I suggest contacting the antivirus company

Regards
Alan
Well, thank you for all the suggestions.

Unfortunately nothing was worked.  I erased and redownloaded shockplayer and flash player, but neither reboot worked.

I've contacted AVAST, and that seems to be the last suggestion.

Any other thoughts??Did you use this tool to uninstall Flash: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html Quote from: Broni on May 28, 2009, 07:35:10 PM

Did you use this tool to uninstall Flash: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Thank you very much.  I did use that tool as you suggested, then reloaded them.  When I went to check the forum I frequent, it gave me a prompt, and BOOM there it was.

Thanks again.You're very welcome

Solve : runonce?

Answer»

Dear computer help, When I hit my IE I keep getting this (runonce) page instead of MSN.  Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this annoyance please!  phinstrain.have you actually went trhough all the we steps in run once

it jsut sets up your search ENGINE and thins
if you go throught it will only run once (hence the name)

hope this helps

andyhi. i thought i should post this in the main section so if anyone else ahs the same problem they can see here

close ie
open the registry editor (hit windows key +R) then type in regedit and hit enter

locate the key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] in the left column

on the right side of the screen locate the subkey [RunOnceHasShown] .
click on this key and change the value from 0 to 1 .

close regedit and start ie

hope this works

andyHey darhblader

Here is the solution:

Issue: IE always goes to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx instead of your homepage

If IE always goes to the RunOnce page on startup, even after you've tried to save the first run settings, it's possible that the mechanism that IE is using to save the settings does not work for some REASON

You can prevent IE from GOING to the RunOnce page and cause it to go directly to your homepage by RUNNING this registry script.

http://www.enhanceie.com/dl/NoRunOnce.reg

1. Download this file to the Desktop or any other folder that you like.
2. Double left click the audiosvr.reg file, when asked if you want to add the information to the Registry click: Yes

NOTE: Use IE to download the registry patch.

When the user opens the command window, at what PROMPT should they expect to be, or does that MATTER?

I copied the 2 cmds. I checked to see if correct, same response

Solve : Need more free space in D drive?

Answer»

Hi
I am running Windows VESTA on an E Machines.  My D drive has 973 MB of 8.36 GB free space.  I don't know how it got so low as I never put any thing there.  I assume that some file are put there automaticly.  E Machines was no help as my computer is out of warrent.  I was able to get to the hidden files but every time I tried to delete one of them I got a message that said I might affect how other files might run.  Needless to say I left things alone.  However I need more free space to keep things running.  Thanks for any help.  BobSounds like a Recovery Partition.

How MUCH free space/used space/capacity does C drive have? Thanks for the reply.  C drive has 75.7 GB free of 103.6 GB.  I do not put anything in D drive.  What worries me is that when D drice gets full the computer will stop working and I will not know what to do.   Bob  You have enough free space on C:\ ...i'd leave D:\ alone.
Are you able to view D:\ in Windows Explorer ? ?
If so list the files that exist there....Thanks
I will try to post the files you requested but I am new and it may take some time for me to get a screen shot.  BobPatio
I thought I had the instructions to make a screen shot but I can't find them.  If you tell me how to make a screen shot I will show you the files on the D drive and you can tell me which ones I can delete and that will give me more free space.  BobPatio
I don't understand what is happening!!!  This morning D drive had 973 MB free of 8.36 GB.  Now I checked and D drive has 1.09 GB free of 8.36 GB.  I don't know of anything I did that should have affected the D drive.  Any ideas?  Thanks  BobOn they keyboard, press the PrintScreen button (http://images.google.com.hk/images?hl=en&q=printscreen&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=)

After pressing it, go to mspaint and CLICK on Edit --> Paste.

Thanks for your help but I could not follow your directions.  I am trying to learn but it is a slow process.  When I pressed the print screen button nothing happened.  When I clicked on the address a Google page with a lot of print screens came up.  Until I learn more I will just do a factory restart and that will get rid of the extra files in the "D" drive.  This thing is about to be assigned to a junk pile.  Thanks for your effort.   Bob Quote

Did you open Paint and then Paste, as advised?

Google has nothing to do with making screen print.  Why are you mentioning Google here?

What, exactly, do you mean by "factory restart"?  What makes you think there are "extra files in the 'D' drive"?  As Carbon Dudeoxide said back in reply #1, it's a Recovery partition.  So, you should do as patio said and leave D alone.

Why?    That makes no sense whatsoever.Soybean
To answer your first question:  I do not have paint.  I deleted it because I would never paint with a computer.  I can get a screen shot by using Gadwin but then I don't see any save or anything.
Second question:  Google came up when I clicked on the address that was in the instructions.  I never figured why I was put there.
Third question: I think there are extra files in D drive because it keeps getting more stuff in it and I am not putting anything in there.  Some day it is going to be full and I have no idea what is going to happen.  I have a DVD that was given to me that will put the computer back to the same way it was when it came from the factory.  If I run it the D drive will not have much in  it.  It presently has 21 items in it.  I could not give a screen shot or you would see what is there.  Out of space for further answers.  Thanks  Bob Quote

Apparently, you do not know what Paint is.  It's a simple graphic program.  And, you should be able to reinstall it, since it's part of all Windows systems.  Exactly how did you "delete" it?

Well, Gadwin most CERTAINLY has a save option.  I know because I saw it demonstrated recently at the monthly meeting of a computer user's group.

Seems pretty obvious to me that he was posting the results of a Google search on printscreen to show you numerous print screen programs that are available.

I think this is discussion will go no where until you either post a screen shot or list all the files on D, and monitor the change in contents of D over a period of days and post here the details of the change.Soybean
You are right.  you need to see a screen shot.  I don't know enough about computers to know how to give you a screen shot so lets just drop the whole deal.  Sorry I took so much of your time.  If I ever learn how to give a screen shot I'll get back.  Thanks   BobWell, these references may help with how to capture a screen print and with getting MS Paint back:

Solve : FrontPage / BlueFish alternative?

Answer»

I used to get FRONTPAGE through my dad's COLLAGE (he works there, he gets licenses for all the computers he has for Office, FrontPage, etc)

But they removed FrontPage from the list of hand-outs for faculty.

And BlueFish is Linux only. Found a compilation of it for Win, but it kept missing iconv.dll...

So is there any alternative to FrontPage/BlueFish (and if you can get BlueFish to work, thad be great)

Your commets are a bit confusing and some clarification would help.  As Archer stated, Word 2007 gives you the option to Save As an earlier version of Word.  So, that's a way to convert those Word 2007 files to a .doc file that can be opened in Word 2003 or Word XP.

Word 2007 users can set Word to use an earlier file format, i.e. .doc, as the default format instead of the Word 2007 format which is .docx.  This would be the best thing to do where files from different versions of Word need to accessible to people using different versions of Word.

Users of Office XP or Office 2003 can also install a Compatibility Pack which will allow them to open .docx files.  See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx

This might also be helpful: Use Word 2007 to open documents created in previous versions of WordI opened by file. By opening the same file in 2007 edition and than doing save as and saving in 2003 format.
Then i was able to open my file in 2003 edition.

Thanks for your good idea which i was not knowing first.

Thank you.

Solve : File missing error????

Answer»

I have just got another computer that needed fixed form someone.  It is a dell insipron E1505.  When you boot, it brings up the dell screen and everything, but the asks you to choose an operating system to boot with.  They arer both xp.  I chose the first one, and it was a clean install.  I then chose the second, and it was obviously the one most used.  It came up with this error...

\system32\hal.dll

What is this?  Can it be fixed?  If not what do i have to do?  I'm not sure I can reinstall because it is not mine, and I don't know if there is anything important on there or not.

CRAPPY DELL!!!

Intel dual core 1.8ghz

1gb ram

60gb hdd

windows xp home you could do a repair/install from an xp cd on that second instance of the OS...

Good LuckWhy are you BLAMING Dell ? ?
You have no idea what the User did to this machine which is why they asked you to fix it ...Oh I'm not blaming dell.  It's just what I call all dell's

ju8st ask computeruler!!Useless bashing...just my observation. That was unnecessary.  All I am saying is that I consider all dells to be "Crappy Dell's"No it wasn't unneccessary...you're generalisation and bashing of an entire company based on 2 bad experiences was unneccessary...

And as a Help Forum it would be bad form for US to let you just simply say Dell's suck...All I am going to say is that hating the dell company is a personal opinion. In any case, hal.dll is pretty nasty error, because it may be caused by almost countless issues: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htm Quote from: paudashlake on April 22, 2009, 06:56:27 PM

All I am going to say is that hating the dell company is a personal opinion.
You may hate them less if you understand many Dell users try to help instead of just ranting about the company.
Thee is a guide on eBay about how to use Dell Recovery CDs to restore XP to a Dell that did not come with the CD or it got lost. I have a Dell and it will let you do a repair from the Dell OEM CD, which I got on eBay. And yes, my Dell has a COA and product key. I did install dual-boot XP on it. Either install can be repaired. But first I made a backup with a suitable program, and I am sure you know what that involves.
Now  if you do your job well and the customer is happy, you can expect him to pay a fair PRICE for your expert help. And if you are a processional, you will not say anything about your personal opinion  of Dell. Or loose a customer.

Also, I think the Dell support site is among the better ONES I have seen.
Can we stop discussing our opinions about dells please?  I'm sorry I mentioned that in my post.  It won't happen again.

Solve : Downgrading from Windows Vista to XP possible??

Answer» http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827 <-- the computer I'm currently running.

I've thought long and hard about it, and I've DECIDED that Windows Vista is most likely the reason this computer is not running optimally. The only question is, is it possible to downgrade a computer that was built around Vista, to the lower version XP? Would I have to look up each individual driver, to make sure they'll all be compatable with the older software, or would they automatically configure?

Thanks AHEAD of time!If the computer was "built around" Vista why do you think Vista is the reason it isn't running optimally?

Has it started slowing down or having problems since you first got it? Quote from: mroilfield on April 23, 2009, 01:16:26 AM

Good point! There is not sure way to say that it would do better with XP. And yes, you can downgrade it. But it is much more trouble that most people want.It has been fairly slow and bad with CPU usage, as I think I posted here about a month ago.

Decided to restart the computer from scratch today, it seems to be running a bit better, not as much issue. Only problem I'm getting now is that every time I walk around a big city in my game, it disconnects me from the internet entirely. I'll have to figure that one out... maybe run as administrator or turn some firewalls off. Quote from: darkphobia on April 23, 2009, 11:39:36 AM

Maybe you would post a nee topic on the games area. The problem may be SPECIFIC to on-line games.  Sounds more like a game problem rather than vista problem. Strictly speaking there is NOTHING wrong with Vista. As long as you keep your updates open and use it as it should be used then... I have no real problems.[every time I walk around a big city in my game, it disconnects me from the internet entirely. [/quote]

Solve : Wi-Fi Question?

Answer»

I am about to purchase this netbook on Amazon.com.

Samsung NC10-14GB  10.2-Inch Netbook

(1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 6 Cell Battery, XP Home)

The specs are great and for what I need it for. (internet & web surfing & email while on the road mostly)

I have never had a laptop or netbook before so I am very unfamiliar with wi-fi but I will definitely use it.

This machine has: 802.11 b/g WiFi, BLUETOOTH 2.0 + EDR, 10/100 BaseTX LAN

I live in Westchester County and have Optimum Online at home. I read that Optimum recently shot up many 'cells' in my area that allow free wi-fi pick up for subscribers.  (GREAT NEWS!)

I am a wholesaler & sell on Ebay. I buy from many warehouses (out of my area) whose general merchandise changes all the time. I basically want a netbook so BEFORE I buy from my distributers, I can run back to my car, check the COMPETITION and see if I can make any profit on the item.

MY QUESTION:

Is it possible that I will be able to pick up any kind of FREE signal in other areas? (Outside of my designated FREE area without having to go inside a Starbucks or Bookstore)

THANKS!!!

Denise

Denise,
Can you gibe some location information without giving you exact location?
WI-FI can have a range of about a mile in some cases. Larger coverage requires more power, equipment and permission to cover a large area. A small business would not want to invest in equipment that would benefit people outside of their place of business. Sometimes a small community may decide to put up a Wi-Fi at the local college. Or they may choose the downtown are to draw business AWAY form the big stores outside the city limit.

So, in a word, I would say no.

There are sites that will provide maps of hot spots.
And on d Bay you can buy antennas that may extend your range.

Wow. Never heard of antennas that would extend my range. Good to know.  Must ask nest time at Best Buy.

I would mostly be in Maspeth NY 11378 & Brooklyn, NY 11237 (Both places are about 3 minutes from each other actually)

I would really appreciate you checking for FREE wi-fi in these areas for me. THANKS SO MUCH!! Your reply will determine my purchase.

DENISEI live out in California.
There in Brooklyn you can look in the Yellow Pages.
But here is a list I found on Google:
Brooklyn, NY Wifi Hotspots

I really don't know the area well at all so the list doesn't really help. (Brooklyn is large)

Is there a way I can search a radius from a zip code or specific address??

THANKS AGAIN!!Yes, here is a map of Brooklyn. wait for the map to load. then 'gap' the map with you mouse by holding down the button mad slowly poll the map down so you can see the area north of Brooklyn, near Jackson Heights area.
I have been in Brooklyn only once or twice, and I know much less that you do! Just play around with the map. Not too fast, unless you have a really fast connection. Look around. From the map you can see thee are some free spots near Broadway and 39th.  Hop this helps.

http://hotspotr.com/wifi/map?ll=40.7277237%2C-73.8948295&name=11378&zoom=12Thank you soo much.

Now can you tell me if I can more than likely pick-up the connection from right outside the location in my car?  (I am sorry. I am wi-fi retarted. LOL Never had anything with it before)  My dad is not too keen either about wi-fi but said something about maybe needing a code?? Is this so you have to come in and buy something? If yes, do these codes change daily? (That would stink to have to purchase something everytime for the 5 minutes I need connection....but I will if I have to)

THANKS AGAIN

DENISEParked on the curb withing 50 feet of a Internet Cafe you will pick up a signal good engulf for bardic surfing. Go inside and buy a cup of Coffee and the signal is much better. And yes, some places with not give the code unless you pay.
You will find out from the locals what the rules are. The map you have shows the free ones in green. They will give you the code for no charge, or may not even have a code.
Many will have some kind of code, not to make a lot of money,  but  just for their own protection for seasons you will learn about in the local area. I have no clue what is being done in Brooklyn. The use of WI FI is very widespread and each neighbor hood has to make their own rules. And this is what the FCC, apparently wants. Any effort to lay down hard laws for an issue that can be resolved locally is not worthwhile. Sorry I can not be more specific.  Bur it is wrong to deliberately interfere with the ability of others to use WIRELESS services or to violate their right to privacy. Ask locally what the rules are.I DID NOT SEE ANY CODES (OOPS.CAPS) but if I have to, I will go in and get something like coffee. I will never know the locals or area well since I go to my wholesalers (they are chinese...I am white)  and make my purchases and then leave. I live 35 minutes away and never go to brooklyn unless I have to.

I guess I will see when I have the machine. Did not realize AMAZON.COM charges friggen TAX!!!  *censored*. Smack me with another $35 bucks. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks so much for all of your brain power. I appreciate it!!

If you have a copy of xp with its key and you have a key for another one will it work?  I done this with xp not sure if its still the same.

Yes, I presume any XP key that isn't activated will work on any XP machine. If it's a key for XP Home, you have to have a copy of XP Home.  if it's a key for XP Pro, you have to have XP Pro to install. One key...one machine.

But you'll find out soon enough if that key has been used,I was making sure that still worked or seeing if it wasnt going to look for that one key.can one disk be different then another?Yes. But his information is not SOMETHING the most users would need to know. If you buy a volume LICENSE from Microsoft, you get one CD and 25 product keys for your company. The keys will work fine for that one CD. But you should not expect them to work with another CD. Maybe they would. Maybe not.
May I ask why this question comes up? Did you buy product keys without media?
Just curious. I have not been able to use keys  and CDs of different sources. I don't know how you can tell. thats not what i ment like the files being installed that is.  If you have two dir would they be the same?  Exatly like C:my documents/bob  C;/my documents/bob  I know theres differnce between home an pro.  Is that the same with like pro like is there differnt coppies or all they the same in such like you dont get any new programs when you install a newer made copy of xp.There are only 2 things that MATTER :

A) The key must be valid.

B) The key NEEDS to match the version it's being used on...an XP Home key will not work on PRO and vice-versa...

That being said all XP CD's are the same ...at least version to version.
Unless they are OEM CD's such as HP, Toshiba etc.ah okay wait    i think that may come into play.

Solve : Disk management Drive letter woes?

Answer»

So I reinstalled windows (XP pro SP3)- and for some reason it has decided to make my optical DRIVES I and J, respectively.

So I tried changing them to E: and F:, as they used to be- but I: is the lowest available option! The only other assignments are C: and D:.

What the heck is going on here.  *sigh*

resolved. I had my bloody card reader installed and it wasn't showing up in disk management.

So really C: and D: were NOT the only drive letter assignments...One can just make his CD Drives X: and Y: and they will stay the same until there are 20 USB sticks plugged in!

(Please correct me if my math was wrong.
Don't have my ABACUS and had to count on my

I was considering that, actually. Making the CD drives some high drive letter. There's also a small TRICK to KEEP all your flash drives consistent in their lettering...give them a Volume Label...If done properly the first time you set them and assign their letter it will remain consistent no matter what's plugged in.

I have hard drives/partitions...then optical drives all assigned...skip 2 letters then all my removable storage devices.

Solve : Window XP Start?

Answer»

I got the diagnostics to run found some problems on the hard drive but even with the recove cd the computer wronge load what is my options now Sorry to say you will have to do a clean install which will wipe out all information on your hard drive. To do this you need to get into your setup screen which is usually can be done with the f2 key or whatever key you use to get into setup. Once there go to the BOOT screen un check everything EXCEPT your cd drive. Put in your original Windows xp disk in yur cd drive and press ok. Then reboot your computer. Follow the directions. Once this is done go BACK to your setup screen and recheck your c: drive first then any other drive you may have. Quote from: patio on April 20, 2009, 10:29:41 AM

Solve : Changing System Properties for Perfomance?

Answer»

These forums can seriously damage your health! You go to post a QUESTION but then see another interesting post to read, and then another, and then another..... and when you finally get round to it, an hour of your life has just flashed past!!!!  Anyway, l digress. Hope this is the right forum.
Running XP (SP3) with 1gb Ram.
C Drive - 28.6gb and F Drive 233gb both with ample space availble.
When l'm BURNING a dvd, the computer really slows down if l try and do other things as well. As stated above, it's taken me ages to get to this point! Yes, more ram is needed for sure, but can't afford it at the moment.
In System Properties, my current advanced settings for performance OPTIONS are:-
Processor Scheduling - Set for best performance of programs
Memory Usage - Set for best performance of programs
Virtual Memory - Total paging file size for all drives is 1534mb
If l go into the change virual memory function, the custom settings for the C drive is 1534mb for both initial and maximum and the F drive is blank with the no paging file button checked.
For now, is there another way to get the most use out of the 1gb l have and should these settings be changed?
Do these so called memory monitor products actually work?
Many thanks as usual

PS Good, a quick mod because no ones looked at this yet. Bu33er, there's another post earlier on about virtual space which l didn't spot, but l think that my post isn't exactly the same. Sorry if it is!Well don't be afraid to ask.
Your question is very reasonable.  Burning a CD or DVD should not reduce your performance for most things, you would think.

I think you question is not about overall performance, but about how CD Burning slows it down.  So here I what I think about that.

There are wide differences in CD Burning software and also variations in the performance of CD-Burners. You get what you pay for.

Many people like the Nero Software products, fut that does not mean they or the best. (They give there stuff to CD-Burner Drive makers, so they get wide distribution.)

My fist recommendation is get a free trial of some other CD-burning software and see if that works better. But that is only a guess.
Thanks Geek, much appreciated.
*censored*, should have mentioned it before. I think l'm using one of the best ie. ConvertXtoDVD. Beats most converters into the ground, even Nero!
However, have also tried others but they all "slow" the system which is why l was wondering whether changing the system properties may make it work faster.
Help, l need more ram!
Regards
WTCYes. more memory would help.

Let's look at something you could try.
You have backups, right?
OK. Break up teat huge drive into two partitions. Make one about 40 GB is you can.
The install Windows XPp on the new portion on that  drive. XP should automatically setup the BOOT.INI  on the first drive.

Install just you CD-Burner on the new install, nothing else.

Make some test on the new install and try burning a DVD on the new install.

I think it will perform better, but I am not sure why. I think you old install has something dragging it down. Like a real time Anti Virus scanner.

Do you already have a partition maker program?
If not, look at this free trail:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/

"ConvertXtoDVD" - are you sure it's the actual burning that takes time - converting AVI to DVD is very processor intensive...well,any video conversion for that matter.

My advice would be to convert your files to an .ISO image, which I believe is an option in that program, then burn the image once all the processing is done using this; http://www.imgburn.com/Actually burning is one of the more INTENSE processes you can run...except maybe video editing....
Schedule your burn projects for bedtime...
Burn at a lower speed ( better results )
Turn off any apps running in the tray area and shut down any scanning apps such as A/V.
Also you may want to check your HDD free space.

Done it this way for years and never had an issue...Thanks Geek, Brundle and Patio. Think l'll leave well alone for now and just run it overnight. Saves all the hassle!
Sorry Brundle, burning takes no time at all, meant to say it was the conversion part that takes hold of the system.
Ah for more ram!
Regards
WTCRAM is a real bargain right now...don't hesitate.

Sell the Dog if you have to...you can always get another Dog... Thanks patio,
Have ordered loads and loads of new ram. God it seems real quiet here now the wife has gone!!!
Regards
WTC

from me Meas,
I'll aid in which I can.  Get a book or a dummies book I sometimes find it useful for these sort of matters at times.  That isnt something we can tell you but you can try google to find an alteritive.  There is no right or wrong way just which ever is comfortable with.  Try doing some of things in class at home, go to youtube and try some of the basic stuff there.  Yes, I know google is the best way to search. but i am not get it yet.
NOw can you give some advice how to be a good learner in C programming.

As a beginer like me how i have to write code in the write way.
What should i do when i learn c program?the word is right, like I said there is no right way.  I can have

or I can have

Its still the same.  Do the basics and go from there. Is your desire to learn just for your own benefit? Or do you wish to learn skill that you can share with others and work with them?
The C language has been around for awhile. It is considered to be a 'system' language.  For doing useful APPLICATIONS that go beyond the system you need a tool the has more power and discipline to solve piratical problems in the real world.

Now if the former is you desire, the stay close to this forum. Many here view programming skills as a form of self-expression rather than a contribution to the good of society.

Let me say it another way. Few people become really good at system programming. And when one does, the excellent system programmer usually works with seven good programmers that do the piratical applications. The excellent system programmer is held in high esteem. But the seven men under him are doing the work that is most needed.

Do you understand what I mean?

ha that good, thanks,

Glad to make you laugh!

Here is some free information for you. It is very technical and has a lot of information. And they have free tutorials that go with the material, It is all from Microsoft. And as you know, Microsoft now has a commanding presence in the world of electronic information and communication. Their products are wildly used in commerce, education,  finance, hospitals, transportation and many other important areas of modern society.
The product that may be of most interest to you is the one called Visual C++, a language that builds on the foundation of C and introduces the structure and strength needed for very large projects. It will take constant study and practice, but is will worth the effort.
Or PERHAPS you would rather be more interested in doing Web Design. There is also a Microsoft product for that. For education purpose you can get a free download of any of the special versions of the Visual Studio products. Outside of the Microsoft products, there is not as much that has the poser, choice and free help you have with the Microsoft Visual Studio.
I have used Microsoft programming languages for many years and have always been happy with there products. I strongly recommend them if you wish to have a solid base of programming skills.
I do not recommend C as a starter language for anyone. It is only for people who must believe one tool is all they need to do anything. You must be versatile and adaptive to succeed. Master C++ first. It opens more doors.

Solve : After several power surges on Monday, computer does not log into Window?

Answer»

Hi Everyone

I need some help.  After SEVERAL power surges, my computer starts giving me the error, Hal.dll is missing or corrupt.  My computer WOULD not boot into any of the safemode options.  After research, I logged into the recovery console and I tried to replace the file from the installation disk by using the following command:

   expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll

This did not WORK for me.  It gave me another error "Unable to create file hal.dll"

Next I looked at my boot.ini using the command bootcfg \list

Total entries in boot list: 1
                         [1]  "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
                         OS Load Options: /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
                         OS Location: c:\Windows

It seemed okay but following the microsoft SUPPORT site I decided to rebuild my boot.

              I did bootcfg \rebuild

After several moments it prompted me to add installation to boot list.  I type "Y" and press
Next:

Enter Load Identifier:   I ENTERED  "Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
Enter OS Load options:  I entered /fastdetect

but then I typed exit and pressed enter according to the instructions and I exited from the Recovery console and the computer started to reboot. It prompted for the operating system, (It now had windows xp pro listed twice"  but the original error is still there, no change.

I went back into the recovery console .  Should I try to do fixboot or fixmbr or could someone suggest something else.

I am trying not to lose my data.  I have not backed up in a while.

thanks for your help

If it jarred the hard drive and caused a head crash it could certainly do that.
its not a virus. look at http://swatrant.blogspot.com/2005/11/windows-could-not-start-because_17.html to see the resolution i followed to get to where i am. the first 2 solutions didnt work so i had to follow the third one that loses system configuration and DRIVER installations. i believe i either damaged some hardware, or hopefully its something with the hives and i just need to get a few system files back. i guess my biggest problem is getting past the admin password now in the recovery console...sorry, character limit

... and getting the missing files without the recovery disk. dias, that sounds right. any idea on how i can recover the missing driver file? think that would even solve my problem? Quote from: Dias de VERANO on April 22, 2009, 03:47:45 PM

You'd have to really be mad to do that...lol HULK SMASH!

I guess that hard DRIVES aren't mean't to handle big shocks, like advanced portable CD players are today...I'd check hard drive health first: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287I don't like the looks of that recovery method you linked to...it's incomplete at best. The other problem with that link is the fact, that OP is stuck at Recovery Console password, which can't be bypassed without booting to Windows, first.you think i will need a  fresh xp install? Not necessarily, but you need to check your hard drive, first, then you're gonna need Windows XP CD to run some checks. \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM error MEANS corrupted registry/system files.so i will need the xp disk? no way to bypass admin pass and maybe get the missing files on disk to run on startup?I see no other way... Quote from: mpkeith on April 22, 2009, 10:16:18 PM
so i will need the xp disk?

It has to be the same edition. eg... Home, professional, etc..

Solve : file is untouchable?

Answer»

I have some mp3 files which can not be moved, copied, deleted, or dragged to the  or anything else.somewhere including all media players I have.
If I R-click on any one file instead of getting the usual drop down menu I only get a few choices. Most important choice missing is "properties"
I do get the choice if I choose all of the files though. So I chose all of the files and then go to properties, it will show as checked "Read only" and "Hidden" and if I go to the advanced button it will show all choices as checked. If I uncheck them and then click on Apply and the OK nothing happens. If I then R-click again the above mentioned are all checked again.

This has happened before. And the one thing I remember in all cases is that I checked on a group (or all) files and began the process of moving them. I feel that while doing so the mouse did something wrong--like accidentally double-clicked or released one of the files or something. In any case. Some of the files became moveable and others not. The rest became untouchable. I tried a software program named "unlocker" and though this has worked wonderfully in all instances of a locked file this is not the case here.
It's as if these files don't exist, as if the are invisible in every way except to my eyes.

Of possible interest: I downloaded a software program called 'FileBoss' in the hope it would solve the problem--I didn't BUT something interesting was revealed. Though all othe MP3 files showed their proper icon, these files did not. They had the usual icon of an 'unknown' file.

Any suggestion as to how I can delete these files?can you set your explorer view to Details, and then see if there is anything interesting to see in the other COLUMNS? (filesize, for example)

It might have been that you pushed "Alt" when you tried to move the files originally, which created shortcuts. This would explain the icon if the files they are pointing to are missing.

Do they have small arrows in the lower left corner?Safemode...
What flavor of Windows ? ?
Sounds like they are orphaned files. If l'm allowed to suggest this, you could try removing the file/folder/program upon reboot using a freeware program from EMCO
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/emcomob.html
Checked it out, no malware or viruses.

Once again thanksSo did you try in safemode ? ?Thanks again to all who helped

problem has been solved. How? The problem folder in question, or rather the files in it, was a subfolder of another. I decided to change the name of the main folder. As I was doing this I THOUGHT that perhaps I would not be able to do so but the main folder did accept the change of name. I then decided to try just for fun to move the problem files from it to the main folder, and, lo and behold, they did. Suddenly the files could be moved, played deleted etc. and all I did was change the name of it's main folder. how odd.

Solve : mssing Start Menu and TaskBar and Icons?

Answer»

okay, I NEED serious help.  I ran AVG (anti virus program), Spybot, and CCleaner to correct some problems with my computer, but I was not sure what was attached to what (or how important it was), and now I have managed to ERASE my task bar and all desktop icons, and I no longer have a Start button.  I have NO clue as to how to get this back.  I need help, o Great Computer Geniuses...  PLEASE?!?!?!?System RESTORE?

Solve : Have Vista want XP?

Answer»

Hi i have a very basic question. I'm purchasing a comp from Dell. will come with Vista and i'm gettting the in-home support.

Can i downgrade to XP legally? DO i need to buy a copy of XP? am aware i can't load a dodgy copy of xp if their service engineers are gonna be looking at it? is my bet option to partition and load a genuine xp and if so how much should i expect to pay for same.

Sorry for all the questions but laptop is for my boyfriend and he's insisting to dell cover!

Would appreciate any adviceCan't you order the computer with XP instead of vista?

Are you ordering from the Dell website or getting it from a store? There is a way to put XP on after VISTA. But it is not a recommended  method.
Inside of VISTA  you can shrink the current partition and make rum for more, You can create a new partition for XP. BUT. at that point you need atoll to save the content of the SECTORS of the drive that have the funny way that vista does boot management. This is really a Linux trick. But it will do the job..
Forgot THEE link. I will  come back and edit this later.
EDIT FOUND IT:

If ordering through their website, you can ask for XP instead, at a cost of $120 more. (Last time I checked was a week or two ago.)

To be honest, in my opinion there is nothing wrong with Vista once you get SP1 installed (free download, available from Microsoft if it isn't already installed on the machine when you get it) and PROVIDED you get the hardware to run it. My home computer still uses XP because I've had no need to upgrade it, and Windows 7 will probably come out before I think I'll need to upgrade it. However, my laptop I use for work came with Vista and I've been really happy with it so far. The only thing that annoys me is User Account Control, but a few clicks disables it.

(Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn UAC on or off -> Uncheck "Use UAC" -> Click OK)

I did try Vista when it first came out, and like most operating systems when they're first released I had many problems. Windows 95 was the same, so was Windows 98 until SE, so was XP until SP1, and Windows 7 will more than LIKELY be no different. It's hard to work all the kinks out of any piece of software or an OS until it gets out to a wider audience who will put it to tests that even the developers didn't think of.Agreed- I used to dislike Vista myself until I realized that I was being a douche since I never even used it before.

My laptop has Vista Ultimate. Same as QUAXO I find UAC to be the only annoying thing- but only when I need to use the touchpad to click it. Otherwise I click it. haven't gotten around to disabling it since I reinstalled.
