Solve : Xp Pro Validation?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm having problems re validation. About a year ago I had a HD failure and sent my computer to the local computer shop. They installed a new HD and reinstalled most of my programs. Recently I got a message that my XP was not genuine and I've REALISED that the shop did not ask for my XP Pro update disk, so it is their version which is not legit. I tried to repair with my XP Disk but was informed that the copy on the computer was NEWER than on the disk and if I continued I would LOSE programs and files. I don't want to lose programs if possible as some I cannot replace.
I've tried various Key changer programs and KeyGens without success any help would be appreciated.

DaveWhy can't you use your original Windows key?I tried to install my Widows key with a program called RockXP4.exe but it won't change to my valid key.
Many thanks for your reply, hope you can help further

Dave

Why can't you use your original Windows key?

RockXP4 is a crack tool. Against CH POLICY. Some versions around on the net have trojans. The only advice the OP should get about keygens and key changers is: DON'T USE THEM.

To get valid you must reinstall XP from your licensed media. Or contact Microsoft if you really do have a genuine licensed install disk. Unless you do this, you'll have to reinstall. If you don't have the install files for the programs already installed, you'll lose them.

Took the words right out of my MOUTH, Dias. Hi Folks,
My problem has been solved, I like everyone else on here did not know that Microsoft has a Product Key Update tool, the very thing that I've been trying to get, as you know I've tried 3rd party and none worked but for your future reference the product key update tool is here and works a treat. http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/PKUInstructions.aspx

Luckily I found the tool before I embarked on the suggestions posted.

Regards,

DaveCool come back Dave..

while installing igi2 , there was a power cut or something like that ,the cpu just restarted.
after some days when i tried to install it again from the cd , i got a message " PREVIOUS INSTALLATION DETECTED PLEASE UNINSTALL FIRST" when i try to uninstall from pc but that files i can't find
what should i do ? Use REVO Uninstaller and reinstall the igi2 application again:  Revo UninstallerIf the computer just suddenly restarted whilst you were installing and now you can't find the programme it sounds a LITTLE suspitious. Have you run a scan for virus's? Where did the programme come from? Quote

Nothing suspicious about it...That was helpful Broni. Tell you what stop following everything I say and be constructive. I may not be a mastermind when it comes to computers but atleast i'm trying to help people. I take time and search the web on PEOPLES behalf I aint on some glory hunt! Give me a break please Broni.Look. There is nothing about being computer smart, or not. It's about reading the post.
Computer in question was shut down by power interruption, and the program installation wasn't completed. So, the OP is getting a message about it.
What is suspicious here? Why not tell the person that then? Not everyone is as savvy as you mate! I can only advise on my limited experience so where am I going wrong? You just took my limited knowledge showed off and made me look like a prick. I'm just trying to help mate not *censored* up peoples computers. Solve : I THINK I AM BEING ATTACKED BY VIRUS --- HELP ASAP PLEASE?

Answer»

I recently (with your help) cleared out all the programs/icons running when I start up. (The ones near the clock)  Now, I see some are back.

MS Spyware 2009  and it says : INFILTRATION ALERT  Your computer is being attacked by an internet virus. DETAILS: Attack from 18.43.138.162, port 57887  ATTACKED PORT: 43393  THREAT: Helper

There is also a RED circle with a white X inside. A message keeps popping up stating:

The mulit-colored shield says : SPYWARE ALERT

A red shield with a white X inside: WARNING! You have a security PROBLEM.

Looks like it wantes me to PAY $ for MS Antispyware 2009 to get rid of all my issues. What the heck is going on??? Help fast please.

Also, the Cyberdefender icon is now by my clock.

When I try to access the internet, I get a message: INSECURE INTERNET ACTIVITY (with the red shield w. X inside)  that asks if I want to continue unprotected? When I choose the YES link, I can access it. I am also getting booted off the internet within a very short period of time. HELP!!!!  I am not PC savy so please go easy with terms and phrases. Thanks.
See attached file.

Now The MS Antispyware 2009 Alert states the THREAT is: FreshDevises

It keeps changing. A minute ago it was something like netadvertising.net

I dont know what any of these are.

Solve : not sure what is going on PC all messed up-help please?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue. I think it might be my hard drive crapping out, but not sure.
For the past week, my PC has been giving me trouble, and I'm not sure what set it off.
When it's off, and I power it on I ALWAYS have to hard shut down and turn it on again, as it never comes on the first time.
The power light will come on, but nothing is being sent to the monitor. I hard shut down and turn it on again, and it will work.
It restarts fine.
For some reason, my anti-virus and firewall will not run. Sometimes if I go into the computer management, and restart the anti-virus service, it will start working. Sometimes it won't.
Right now my firewall is working, but most of the time it doesn't.
A COUPLE times, when I powered on, I got a pop up message saying something to the effect that there was a problem with the registry, and that some entries had to be restored with a backup, and that it was successful.
Firefox is constantly crashing.
There is something else, but I can't think of it.
I've tried a registry cleaner/error corrector, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything.
What do you think the problem is? I do not think it's a virus, as I always keep the firewall and AV software up to date and RUNNING.
Does it sound like it's the hard drive?
Thank you for any HELP.

forgot to add: my OS is Windows XPEliminate malware as a problem. Run scans .......... Could also be a mechanical issue (power switch worn out).....Check CPU and memory (reseat)...swap out power supply to eliminate PS....Check the easy fixes first.mine did the same untill a hacker was removed from me but check what process are running and see if ther are any you did not put in there. The haker that got me destroyed my brand new cd hard drive and the drivers to run it and connect to anything there are a lot of things that cause thi HOWEVER i agree your switch is more than likely bad Ya, I know for sure there's no malware or viruses.
I will check the power switch and make sure nothing's loose in there.
thank you

Solve : Services reset themselves?

Answer»

I didn't find this question anywhere else. I have Windows XP Home w/ Pk 2.  I haven't got to 3, because I'm dealing with this.  I have my original discs, but GATEWAY reset my confirmation ID, since Mircosoft reset the Id when the computer was serviced. I have a Gateway EV700 with 512 Ram. Pent 4 processor & ASRock P4VM 890 motherboard.

I've reloaded everything, because I couldn't find the default settings for services for XP Home, my computer was bogged down, and regcure made things worse??? My cd doesn't recognized a disc half the time nor does it want to record  now my SOUND doesn't work.  Having no sound is a new thing. It worked when I reloaded now I only have computer noise coming through.  I've checked all with PC Doctor and all was fine, but it stated I had audio disc in when I didn't.

I got the default settings back when I reloaded on the 17th and reset them how I wanted them, but at some POINT after loading PK2 or McAfee my services changed. I can't change them and make them stay.

I've attempted several times. They don't even go back to their default settings. It's causing my computer to run more than what's needed and causing my computer to freeze, stall, have issues...etc., because there's so many things running (STARTED).  I've tried everything. I even disabled startup protection and service guard in McAfee to see if that was causing it, but when I reset them and logged back on ALL was back to the way they were before I changed them once again, so I've enabled protection. I don't need all of these running (STARTED), but I don't want them disabled either.

Is there another way to do this beside going into services and start up in msconfig?Try ;

Start>Run>services.msc

It's a more friendly and descriptive screen..

I'd also suggest doing the malware scans, just to cover all bases....seems to be more happening here than just a services issue.Black Viper's Site

The ultimate authority on Services.....
P.S. Stay away from the registry fixit apps...

Solve : accidentally terminated a process...fixable? (windows xp)?

Answer»

my cousin and i were trying to figure out why my xp didn't have any free space on drive f. we realized c and d were pretty much empty, and were trying to sort through f. he opened task manager and i accidentally terminated the process that runs my linksys wireless adapter....so now my internet doesn't work. i have tried to do network connections and it just says that windows cannot CONFIGURE the connection. i would really really appreciate it if someone COULD just tell me what i need to do to fix it, if i can.Restart the computer?it restarted itself after i terminated it, and then the internet didn't work.So the computer has been restarted? As in, Turn off and on again?

Does the wireless, wired, or both not work anymore?

What OS?yes it has.

i don't know about wired. it's not a laptop, and it's a ways away from the adapter in my house. so i've been using the wireless adapter for a long time. as far as i know, just the wireless isn't working.

xp?RESTORE the computer with earlier settings & Restart.Yeah, you can try a System Restore to a day before the problem started.

Do you know exactly what you STOPPED?

How is the wireless not working? Any errors?

Do you use the Windows Wireless Connection tool or another software for your wireless?Instead of just turning your computer on and off.  Turn it off and when you are turning it on hold the button and COUNT to 5.  Try that first.

If that doesn't work go to control panel and outinstall programs and select add hardware.  You are lucky to know what you are missing. Install the disk and locate that entry. That should fix it. Quote from: JezztT on March 29, 2009, 06:25:28 AM

Instead of just turning your computer on and off.  Turn it off and when you are turning it on hold the button and count to 5.
Hold what button down? When?

Holding the Power Button down for 5+ seconds will forcefully turn the computer off - cuts the power.

Solve : Cant get past welcome screen.?

Answer»

I recently used Spybot S&D to remove a bunch of malware. While doing that I got a message saying that the network needed to reboot because the winsock(?) was damaged,or CHANGED or something. So I clicked ok,THINKING it was the computer system itself rebooting.
Now when I reboot I enter a PASSWORD to get to the WinXP screen, no problem, then to the Welcome screen. Then the box appears with the word 'Admin' in it. It doesnt have my personal name(Dave) in that box anymore, just Admin. When I click the box it says "Loading personal settings..", the screen flickers, then it says "logging off", then "saving personal settings". All within about 1 second.
Even safe mode takes me to the welcome screen, same result. I went into setup and changed both the supervisor and the user passwords, thinking it would somehow re-add an Administrator, but no luck.As soon I I get to that Admin box, it doesn't work. I can't get to desktop let alone Control Panel!
All help greatly appreciated!! Thanks.Moved to the Microsoft Windows forum. Maybe someone will have some ideas. Do you have your XP CD?Sounds like you need to do a full system restore but you will probably need the original XP cd..No, I don't have an XP disc. I don't understand why I am not recognized as the Administrator? I can enter the setup and change things like passwords, does that mean anyone can basically do that?i got the same problem as you dave, the only soluion is to do a full system restore unless you have important documents that you need to recover by exporting them into a different harddrive. My problem was after i scanned with avg and spyboy s&d i didnt find any problems but when i found out that iexplorer.exe was causing all these POP ups i googled it and some SITE told me to delete some registry keys in windows/run something so i cant get to my desktop even in safemode.
I'm gonig to build a new computer because i had it since 2001

Solve : CPU Usage is way up.?

Answer»

I turned on my laptop 2 days ago and it was RUNNING REALLY slowly and I saw that the CPU usage is way up above 80% all the time.
I have had a look and it is the 'System Idle Process' that is doing it.
Why did this suddenly HAPPEN and how can I fix it?
The laptop is soooo slow it's driving me nuts.
ThanksIf your system idle process is at 80%, that is good, not bad. It means your cpu is spending 80% of the time "idle", which means "not doing anything". You should look for another CAUSE.
System Idle Process shows how much of the processor's processing power is idle. From what you have said, it seems that 80% of the processor is idle, and 20% is being USED by other process. Perhaps an AV scan is in progress?

EDIT: Beat me to it, Dias. This could also be CAUSED by hardware interrupts.  If the CPU usage is actually shown as 80+, and system idle process is 80+, there is some problem that is hidden within that process, not shown by the default task manager.
Download a free tool called Process Explorer and have a look, give us a screenshot.

Can I split a notepad into "rows and colums" on windows ?
 Help please!

Depending on exactly what your after- the standard windows "edit" control, used by notepad, implements Tab stops. by using Tab you can line up your data.

Note that you need a fixed-width font for this to work properly, but it WORKS alright with proportional fonts, as well.

There is no way in notepad to change the tab-stop locations, as you can with Word or other word processing programs, so you have to settle for a multiple of the default.

OK. I'm going to give you an example how to make a table 2x2 with columns named name & address.
First thing to do is to open notepad and write those tags below:

<html>
<table align=center border=1>
<tr><td>Name</td><td>Address</td></tr>
<tr><td>no name</td><td>no address</td></tr>
</table>
</html>

Click on File, SAVE As.. and name it as example.html and also save it on the desktop so you can find the file easier.

Cheers. Quote from: dr_iton on March 28, 2009, 02:10:17 AM

And what about the ?

Notepad is not a WYSIWYG editor, just a text editor.

Try Nvu.That was just an example because as you know an HTML document is constituted from its HEAD and BODY.

Solve : Do i need to make slipstream disk???

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm about to embark on my first build.......My one question is if i buy a new windows xp home disk does it include sata drivers yet..... or do i have to make a slipstream disk??
MOTHERBOARD..... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131345&nm_mc=KNC-YahooSSP&cm_mmc=KNC-YahooSSP-_-Motherboards+-+Intel-_-ASUS-_-13131345

HD.....  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145215You will need to either make a slipstream disk or else download the right SATA drivers for your board and put them on a floppy disk and then you can press a key when the XP INSTALL asks you if you need to use any 3rd party drivers.
I have been told that Service Pack 3 includes SATA drivers.  However, I have not tested this for myself.  Can anyone confirm whether this is true or not?The official XP SP3 release does not include SATA drivers. You may get IDE emulation from some chipsets but not SATA features such as SataII, hot-plug or NCQ.

i was told that now it doesn't matter, that sata support is built ito the motherboard......so i this true or do i still need to do the windows thing.....
The proper SATA drivers will be included on the MBoard Driver CD...wesome.....thats what i was looking for.......thanks a buncha new question on this.......to run the motherboard driver disk dont i have to have windows installed first? Remember the message that says ""Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver"? Or maybe you never installed XP before.

This page gives an outline, obviously the driver name will be different for each motherboard and driver.

That's when a slipstreamed disk becomes useful.

PROVIDED that the motherboard (unlike my Shuttle) actually has a floppy controller chip and a header to connect the data cable to, and it is enabled in the BIOS, and you have an appropriate power connector / adapter.

Or you can borrow a USB floppy drive. Again make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.

Or you can simply remove the XP CD and insert the Driver CD after hitting the F6 prompt to install the SATA drivers...

Solve : Cannot generate .avi files?

Answer»

Hey,

I have a nifty program called Celestia - a sort of 3D astronomy thing - and it has a video capture facility, but I get an error when I try to generate the avi file ("could not capture movie").  I've had other programs LIKE Animation Shop and gif to avi CONVERTERS that fail to generate avi files too.  I can play avi files no problem.  I suspect a codec issue but have installed various codec packs to no avail.

I'm running XP Pro SP3 with a 128meg Radeon 9200 vid card.

Solve : Right click any folder and windows lock?

Answer»

When I right click any folder I get the 'windows as encountered a problem' message.
If I click send report or don't send I get the same result - the message disappears and my desktop locks, the only command I can use is ctr alt del to run the task manger. I can then stop the folder running from the task manager.

I have windows updates turned on and I have norton anti virus and I use the windows firewall.

The only thing I can think of that MAY have caused this error is that I have been learning visual basic 6 recently, is it possible I may of altered something.

I have system restore turned on and did resort t using it, I selected a restore point from about a month ago but when my computer restarted it said could not restore. I tried it with a few other dates with the same result.

I would be grateful for any help.

SeanTry uninstalling 'visual basic' performing a FULL system virus scan then a full malware scan but only after you uninstall 'visual' then try your system. If reloading 'Visual' creates the same problems then bingo.Visual Basic only adds a item to the "new" submenu- chances are this is a issue with a Shell extension, installed by many programs such as winzip.

here is a useful tool to examine these:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

First, try disabling all the non MS entries that are of the "context menu" type in the list, and seeing if it still crashes.

chances are, it will work fine. You can then use shellexview to re-enable the extensions, one at a time, to determine the culprit.

Hopefully this will help.Or you could do that!! Thankyou very much for your help. You have solved the problem.

I downloaded the ShellExView and followed your instructions.
The offending file was (Better file rename) which renames groups of files.
I installed (Better file rename) over a YEAR ago, I did use it recently for the first time in ages, I will now simply uninstall it as I do not use it much anyway.

Is it possible to mark this entry as Solved?

Thanks for your help

By the way, the reason system restore did not work is Norton. This is one of the several annoyances with this AV. You have to turn off protection for norton products (not the av itself). You can find this under options when you open norton.

If the need ever arises again to use system restore you will now be able to restore.I have had a look at Norton just incase I do ever need to restore and I do not have 'Options'.
I have looked throught all the settings and I do not see where I can turn off Norton products.

[attachment deleted by admin]Sorry Squeek - it's been a wile since I had to do this and couldn't remember the exact path to TAKE to disable protection for norton products.

Refer to this
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/0/c7a9848df95596b9882570c900605bf5?OpenDocument
to disable protection for your particular version. Its ok I have found how to do it in Norton help.

Under Product Security, next to Norton Product TAMPER Protection, click the status indicator to turn it Off.

Solve : How can I save the outcome results of commands in command prompt.?

Answer»

Sir, many thanks for your CORDIAL HELP. Now my question is how to save the results that COME out after hitting the key with a command ?lets use Echo as an example(NOTE: this works with every command):

Code: [Select]echo Hello > OUTPUT.txt
This will write the output of the echo command, in which case is "Hello" to the file
output.txt(it will create this file)

To ADD more information to a file, after it is created, just use this:
Code: [Select]echo Hello >> output.txt
It will add "Hello" to output.txt.

Hope this Helps

Solve : exe don't work?

Answer»

I have windows xp sp3 and when i create another account (doesn't matter with what PRIVILEGES) my exe files don't work. I downloaded some xp_exe_fix.reg but when i execute it says "error accessing the registry". What should i do? I have access to an administrator account in which exe files work and if you ask if i really need another account then the answer is YES.Anybody? Are you an admin on the machine? What other software are you running? antivirus...SPYWARE software...etc...

Be very careful with the following.  I have not tested it. Login as Administrator in safe mode.

C:\>attrib /?
Displays or changes file attributes.

    -   Clears an attribute.

C:\>attrib  -R /s  /D *.exe

I'm KIND of afraid to try it but can i get the changes back if i set a system restore point?I have no clue why billrich is suggesting UNIX commands to fix your issues here...
1) How are you creating these user accounts that won't run .exe's ? ?
2) What .exe's are these or is it with all of them ? ?
3) What type of restrictions are you placing on these User accounts ? ?
4) Have you tried creating a new User account with full priveledges and tested it ? ?I create these accounts by entering "user accounts" in control panel and i click "create a new account". None of the exe files don't work. I tried making the accounts limited and admin privileges but it still the same. Patio Clone wrote:

Bill Clone explains:

I have about 30 UNIX commands that were complied for Windows and the commands work perfectly.  The Ghost Clone recently gave me Sed  and it works perfectly.

Patio Clone's  focus on the creation of the accounts and the privileges given the new account is most likely the correct solution.

My focus with Chmod 777 was to grant everyone the privilege  of execution of  all *.exe files  is too dangerous even if it would work.

Keep up the good work Patio Clone  and let us all know when you fix the "no execution of *.exe files."

Bill Clone

You may fool with UNIX commands all you like but to post an alleged solution that you yourself didn't even test is IRRESPONSIBLE at best.

These are people's machines we are assisting on here and you need to keep that in mind...

And you can refer to yourself and others as clones all you like but i am respectfully requesting that you refrain from it in reference to me.

patio.can you open registry editor? (or does this fail due to it being an exe?)

if so try navigating to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

the (default) value should be

Code: [SELECT]"%1" %*

I can't access it cause it is exe, just as you said.
But i can access it in my admin account where the exe works.Did you try creating a new User account yet ?Yes I tried it with admin privileges and its not working

Try This Fix

If this does not work you may be seriously infected...Ok, i tried the first method and it doesn't work. In the second method, when it says navigate to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe",igo there, click .exe and i get an error message

Code: [Select]Cannot open .exe: Error while opening key
I went to my working account and the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe and everything was fine. Can anything be done?

Solve : Windows found 1 update?

I get the Windows update yellow shield in my tray over and over again.  When I try to install the update I get this:

Security Update for Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (KB956500)

Any error messages?

What OS?No error messages. Windows XP Home Edition.Try here:

There is no need to install this update.Hmmmm.....
Do you even have MS Powerpoint 2003?

Also, is this a GENUINE version of Windows XP?Yes I ran a search and I do have MS Powerpoint 2003.

I don't know what you mean by a genuine version of Windows XP.I'm bringing this TOPIC back because I've been still gettting the update shield and the same thing keeps happening.  The update won't download.  So I downloaded Powerpoint 2007.  First I went into add/remove programs and tried to do a repair on Powerpoint 2003 and it gave me a message that it couldn't repair it.  My question is can I safely remove 2003 now that I downloaded 2007.  I'm always afraid to remove a program thinking that it might cause more problems.

I researched further about the 2003 update and found many people have this same problem.  I also found out that the 2003 will not be available after October 2009.

Please let me know about removing 2003.  Thanks! If 2007 is running CORRECTLY and is registered then it shouild be safe to remove the earlier ver,Patio this is the free version and I didn't have to register it.  How can I tell if it's running correctly? Can you open PowerPoint slides with PowerPoint Viewer 2007?  If so, then it must be working correctly.  I'd uninstall the 2003 version and see how things go.  If you need to reinstall it, you can get it at:

Solve : Upgrading RAM in my Dell?

I THOUGHT my slowing system and speeding up fan (and freezing) might mean its time to add memory

I went to 4Allmemory.com and did their quick scan of my Dell Dimension
It said 2 slots were open for 512 MB each.
It then recommended I get 1 GB DDR2 to install.
But when I checked my Dell manual it said you should always buy 2 modules to put in
Should I cancel the order and buy 2 smaller modules or or will it still work as well if I just install the 1 GB ?So just out of intertest 'how fast can you run?' Quote from: PS STEVE on May 25, 2009, 06:24:03 PM

Solve : Re-installing XP?

Answer»

When re-installing XP my computer goes through the process down to about 34 minutes to GO. At this point it is installing devices or drivers, sorry I can't remember exactly. The computer then dies before re-starting and a message comes up telling me that re-install is resuming. Unfortunately, this process CONTINUES in a repeating cycle and I am unable to get past that point. Any suggestions please. Thanks for your time. You mean the computer just restarts itself right? I think that the drive isnt getting POWER like it should.  I had this happen before after reached that point an had to go in an disconnect and reconnect my drive. The 2 main causes of this symptom are bad copy/dirty CD and or RAM problems...
Gently clean the CD with a lint free cloth.
For the RAM DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours.
Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM.The BIOS will say if it see's the drive just look for it, if nothing else PATIO had some good input.King Pincer - That's right, it just restarts itself.

Patio - I'll try cleaning the CD. Nice if it's that simple. However, I do not understand the other SUGGESTION (RAM DLoad and run Mem Test).

I can see that I should have given more info before. Before trying to re-install XP the computer was stuck in a loop where it would not complete a boot up but would get stuck in a cycle, never completing the boot up. This was after Dad downloaded Google Chrome (is this relevant?). I was advised to run the XP install disk to repair the system. As I have no idea of the administrator password (the computer is my Dad's) I opted for a re-install. My original post tells it from there. Thanks for all the suggestions, I hope I can make use of them but I'll start with the CD clean. Cheers.

Solve : Quick question on finding something?

Answer»

I am TRYING to remember where in the computer it was to go for this setting that someone helped me on awhile back.
It was something that was causing the computer to come up with that started right before this past Christmas and I had a repairman work on it and then came up with it again right after he left, but then someone on here helped me with that, and it was some setting that was marked but I don't remember where it was though, and I want to let my brother-in-law know what exactly it was because he is thinking it is spyware or something that causing it.
The message was-
This computer is in use and has been locked. Only Amy\AmyR or an administrator can unlock this computer. Then had a place for a username and password.
Then when the repairman brought it back, it came back up with it again, but it had something a LITTLE different and I have no idea even what he did to let me back in. But it seemed to mostly have the same message and added the word Help in parenthesees (Help)
So, it said
This computer is in use and has been locked. Only Amy\AmyR (Help) or an administrator can unlock this computer.

And in the Usermame AREA Help would be in that area and then nothing for a password. It let me in, but before this ever happend, it never had any message like this come up. I told the guy too that I have no idea what it wants either, because see I use so many different websites and stuff, so I have so many different usernames and PASSWORDS.
One thing I would like to understand too is what in the world this repairman even did to my computer to allow me back in at all? This computer stuff gets so confusing at times, and I'd love to understand it better.

Thanks,

It's not in any of the posts because someone in the chatroom is who helped me with it. I'm only trying to remember where it was so I can show it to my brother-in-law who is helping me and my mom with our computer problems. He was thinking was maybe a virus or spyware that caused it, but it seemed to be a setting that was wrong because that helped when I fixed something that was marked.
I have so many memory problems due to my health causes me memory problems, and I don't remember where in computer it was located. Hoping maybe someone will know.

Thanks,

are you on xp or what

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/search.aspx?=&qu=user+account+control

go to above and you my find something to help change itwhen you go out of chat everything is lost Amy - your problem can be caused by a third party screensaver which has a password lock enabled.  If you have installed a third party screensaver you could try uninstalling it.

See KB242917.

I finally found what it was, I sort of remember it was something to do with resume password. So, I tried doing a search for it on Google and it came up with answers to questions and instructions, so I went to look and see if that's what it was, and it is.

Here are the instructions so you can see what it was, and then maybe does someone know how this could have got marked?

To protect your files by using a screen saver password
Open Display in Control Panel.
On the Screen Saver tab under Screen saver, click a screen saver.
Select the On resume, password protect check box.
If Fast User Switching is turned on, select the On resume, display Welcome screen check box.

Yes, I actually have a bunch of notebooks to write things down. One thing I have written down is all the different error messages I get all the time on things and then I leave places so I can write down instructions later on about what we do and stuff to fix the problems. Only other thing is I do run into alot of problems with writing due to my disabilities, so mostly have to get others to write stuff down for me.
Oh and I was wondering, what do you think of using the feature to save remember password for sites you go to? My brother-in-law keeps saying I need to not do that, but then how on earth do you remember everything if you don't do that? It's easier for me than just writing it down which I'm sometimes afraid if I write down my passwords then I might make a mistake and write something wrong because I try and make all my passwords really long and complicated and use combos of numbers and letters. The other thing I keep trying to figure out, is there a way to print that list out of the saved passwords?

http://www.screencapturer.com/

go to above , download , and it will take a picture on the screen of the error and any answers , save them to your documents and you can read them anytime you need them , no writing

yes use the password saver , i always use the same password for all sites if i can then i wont forget it , and keep it simpleDon't I need to have a camera or one of those webcam things hooked up to the computer though for this thing? I don't have any of those on the computer.
http://www.screencapturer.com/

when you see any of these sent to you they are for you to download , go to it and down load it to your pc , it is a camera , play around with it before you use it , harryHarry it's not a camera ...it's a screenshot program...
A camera is not needed to take a screenshot.ok i know what it is , but i did not want to confuse amyr7 , it will do what he needs , it brings up a camera and takes a picture of the screen which he/she can save to file

Solve : Free registry repairs?

Answer»

Can someone explain 'free' registry downloads for me? Every site I visit goes so far, then when you get to the stage where you click to finish the repair, lo and behold you get a site where for only so many $$$$ you can complete the repair - where's the 'free'There is now software that can "repair" a registry other than a Windows Install Disk.

You can do the same thing as the repair tools with all free solutions. As follows...

CCleaner Slim
Defraggler

Also run your antivirus and that's it. The registry repair tools are just a scam to try and get your money.

Also see here > Myth #1: Registry Cleaners and here > Registry Cleaners, not recommended

Note: Always back up your registry before making any changes.
yup registry cleaner can keep your pc clean but deleting an incorrect value in the registry can make your pc unusable when one min ago it was ok.Free registry repairs = costly computer repair Quote from: Broni on May 26, 2009, 08:45:06 PM

Free registry repairs = costly computer repair

lol, your computer right now ain't broke so why do something that can make it go broke?

are you happy that you can go broke when you've just made it go broke? They are called "rogue" applications...
They use unscrupulous advertising methods...OFFER the impossible ...and then demand payment of normally $29.95 to fix issues you don't have.

NOTE: If you are getting these popups often then i'd suggest a visit to our Virus and Spyware section as chances are you're already infected.I don't care what the experts say - I run Eusing Free Registry Cleaner on a semi-frequent basis.  That said, I do run an educated eye down the list of entries it proposes to remove before letting it get on with it.  The main reason I do this is because it irritates me the way many applications leave traces of themselves about the registry even after uninstallation.  I'm under no illusion that it frees up space or makes my system run quicker, but I like the "clean and fresh" feeling it gives me.    Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on May 27, 2009, 02:15:19 AM

Looks like a good app, kpac.  Does Revo uninstall all the crud that apps add to the registry after first use, as well?HI Rob.

Yes Revo does. I've used it for a few YEARS now. Install something small just to give it a test. It's unbelievable how much junk is left behind by even the smallest applications uninstallers. Revo will even completely remove software that has a missing or broken uninstaller. It even has a portable version! http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

I don't care what the experts say......

Agreed. But if you have to ask then it is probably best you just stay away from them. Well intentioned "Registry Cleaners" can make mistakes  that prevent rebooting.

Registry Cleaners downloaded from unknown sources may have bad intentions.

Registry Cleaners that are on-line and interactive would need full access to the entire computer before they can determine whether a registry key refers to an executable that does not exist (e.g was un-installed but left remainders in the registry).

I am sure that if you search the Internet HARD enough you will find sites that will "fix" your registry while on-line and do NOT demand $$$ when you "click to complete repair";
but they may have already got your credit card details and financial records, and installed backdoors so that after they have "maxed out" your existing credit cards they can come back in to pick up any future cards ! ! !

If you want an exciting life full of technical dangers and financial risks this is the way to go ! ! !

Solve : Main login screen wont let me in?

Answer»

Im new to the site and am in need of some help.  Ive asked AROUND and didnt come across the answer.  Im sorry if this problem has been covered already but when I searched for the problem here I mainly came across problems like the blue screen of death or just going to a black screen.  Well now to the problem.  First I am running Windows XP Media Edition (if that will help with the problem) and when I start the computer everything starts up fine.  When I get to the login screen I put in my PASSWORD and it begins to log me in but as soon as it logs me in and I get to see my backround, it logs me back out to the main log in screen and says saving current settings.  It logs me out before I any programs SEEM to even load.  Every TIME I try to log back in it does the same.  Please can someone help me ASAP because my teacher has allowed me some EXTRA time untill I can get my work from my computer but if I cant get it soon then I fail.  PLEASE can someone help me?  I dont have the boot disk that came with the computer because I didnt think I would need it back then so I never kept track of it.  Thank you all.Can you login to Safe Mode?

If so...create another user account with password to see if you experience the same issue. When I run it in safe mode it does the same.  The only diffrence, if it makes one at all, is when its ran in safe mode there is my account and the admins which normaly isnt there.  I also tryed the ctrl + alt and delete twice but that way also does the same. Are you the Administrator on this computer?  If so...can you login to either account (via Safe Mode) without it kicking you out?Im the admin on it yes and I tryed on both my normal account and the admin and both does the same thing.  Thank you by the way for the quick replies.Your welcome...

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it looks like you'll need to perform a repair installation of XP...unless someone else has some better news they'd like to give you.  In order to do that, though...you're going to need the recovery CD from your computer manufacturer, or a certified Windows XP cd.

Wish I could be of more help...I was afraid of that.  I appricate the help.

Solve : Default Viewer For Fax Documents?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP-SP3 and Fax Console for sending fax through modem. The problem is that I cannot view the fax I have send. When I try to do so following message comes
"Need a default VIEWER for fax documents (.tif files)."

So please help to reinstall this .tif file

In Explorer, right click any tif file and from the menu:

Open with...
Choose Program...
select Windows Picture And Fax Viewer.
Check the box for "ALWAYS use the selected program to open this type of file"
Click OK
Thanx, I use following METHOD to resolve this problem from Microsoft

To resolve this issue, reassociate .tif files with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click RUN, type MSPaint in the Open box, and then click OK.
In Microsoft Paint, click Save As on the File menu.
In the Save as type box, click TIFF (*.TIF;*.TIFF).
In the Name box, type Test.
In the shortcuts LIST on the left side of the Save As dialog box, click Desktop, and then click Save to save the Test.tif file to the Desktop.
Close Microsoft Paint.
Press and then hold the SHIFT key, and at the same time right-click the new Test.tif file on the Desktop.
In the shortcut list that appears, point to Open With, and then click Choose Program.
In the Programs list, click Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.Dias version was shorter...For speed and features, IrfanView is great for this job.

Even shorter!

Solve : OUTLOOK - unable to delete signature?

Answer»

I use MS OUTLOOK 2003 with Win XP.

I have deleted my SIGNATURE in OUTLOOK but in a strange way OUTLOOK still
use my old signature.

Have also created a new signature but same thing here.. OUTLOOK KEEPS using
my old one.

Have also tried to re-pair OUTLOOK from C-panel but it didn't help.

How can I get around this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Signature files are stored at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Signatures - three files for each sig - one each in HTML, plain text, and RTF format.

You can manually delete the files and make new ONES with Outlook, hope that helps.

Solve : Windows slow to load?

Answer»

I have my sister-in-laws desk top and it is very slow to load windows. It gets to the windows XP screen pretty fast but spends a more time then it should at the blue welcome screen and once it gets to the desk top it just shows the back ground pic for a few minutes before loading the icons. It is ALSO very noisy when starting up or when starting a new application.

I have blown out all the dust so the inside is CLEAN. I have run virus scans and spyware scans with nothing being found. Could it possibly be the hard drive DIEING and would that cause it to load slowly

do you have ccleaner and advanced  systemcare , download and run The log looks clean, but there are some Norton's leftovers.
Start with Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then...
Please, post some computer info:
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

It is also very noisy when starting up or when starting a new application.
It is either the hard drive or power supply. Open the case and try to determine where the sound is coming from.
If it is the hard drive, which is what I suspect, start backing up data asap.
Do you have an XP CD?THANKS for the responses guys.

Since the comp has had to go back home today I can't do any more on it. I don't remember how much space was on the hard drive. I think it was close to 200 gigs and about 70% was free.

I will see if I can get my nephew to run to Norton tool.

I did manage to get windows to load faster although I don't know why what I did worked.

They only had one profile and when I created another one both profiles would load really fast.

Solve : Internet Explorer stops and freezes?

Answer»

I am running on an acer notebook with windows VISTA home premium.  For some time now off and on the Internet Explorer will stop and freeze on me and it seems to be constant now.  It will look like it is working.  I will explain it shows a blue circle SWIRLING like it's doing something but it just swirls and swirls.  Back a year or so ago it did the same thing and I tried Microsoft Support and did the Reset Internet Exploere settings and it worked fine for awhile, after I performed that action but it's doing the loop like thing again.  I have recently installed Webroot Spysweeper and NORTON Internet Security but I did that last year too and had trouble then but it worked fine after awhile.  I did disk cleanup and installed ccleaner and cleaned  and some other things.  Can anyone assess this for me thank you.Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

Is Firefox OK?I don't know what you are trying to tell me.  I read that IE 8 is BETTER and faster.  Is this true?  What options do I have besides the one you just posted?  Thanks.I'm trying to tell you to run IE without add-ons, and see, if it'll work fine.
I also want you to try another browser, Firefox, to see, if it's browser problem, or something else.Ok thanks also my pc runs slow and it swirls but since I've been on the computer today it hasn't swirled as of yet.  I did try firefox earlier and it didn't work any faster.   So anyway that is a plus.  Maybe my security is missing something.  Well I don't know.  Thanks. 1.  Did you try IE with no add-ons?

2. Please, POST some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

3. Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as AdministratorHow do I run IE without add ons?Re-read my reply #1.I have an Acer Notebook 5100 series with Windows Vista Home Premium.  AMD Turion 64 X2 dual core TL-50/TL-56/TL-60/TL-62 processor or higher with 4 gb of Ram.  I have 30 percent free disk space at 10.9 gb and 22.5 gb of used disk space on the c drive. with a capacity of 33.5 gb.  I have Windows Firewall, Webroot Antivirus with Antispyware with Webroot Firewall and Norton Internet Security with it's firewall.I still need you to answer my two other questions.
Are you running Windows firewall, and Norton firewall? Not a good idea.
BTW, Norton itself may be one of your problems. No I didn't run IE without addons.  Yes I have Norton and Webroot firewalls.Look. We can go at it for a whole night.
You need to follow my suggestions, and when you're done, we'll go from there.I am running IE with no add onsand? And nothing, it's still slow loading and earlier I got an error message saying "Internet Explorer has stopped working and is restarting".  I'm guessing that didn't work.  What now?  Thank you.

Solve : Windows 2008 Software??

Answer»

I have windows dedicated server right now my first one HOSTED with Server Intellect. Even thou it is a managed server and they provide very good monitoring software I was wondering is there something else I can install in the background to make sure my individual websites are up vs just watching to see if the server is up? I am pretty confident with the server up time after 4 months but I am worried about the future if my site gets hijacked or taken down. I want to know right away that my html is down. Any ideas? You could WRITE a script that tells you, or you could pay for a service that will call you. To watch my SITES, I WROTE a script that runs on a workstations away from my server. It SENDS me a text message (via gmail) with the error code and which site is down. It also pops a message up on my screen to tell me also. You could use wget to download html or to spider whole sites and report results.

Solve : Computer will not boot, can not enter safe mode either?

Answer»

I'm working on a friend's computer so I don't know all the specs what I do know is this:
e-machines computer
1 GB RAM
100 GB HDD
Windows XP Home
I think it's a AMD Sempron processor not sure the speed.

Problem is the machine powers up then shows an "Invalid BOOT.INI" message then tries to restart and will continue this loop unless manually powered down.

I can not boot to safe mode

The BIOS can detect the HDD and other components and I don't see ANYTHING out of the ordinary

I've checked all connections and cables both internal and external and did not find anything wrong

And of course he never made a recovery disk and does not have one, nor do I have one available.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advanceI had the same problem just about 1 week ago. It turns out that the HD went bad. Can you slave the HD to another computer to check it out?I will try thatI was able to slave the HDD to a know good system, the drive seems to function and all the data seems to be there.  While I had it slaved to the other drive I was able to fix the Boot.ini file.  When I reinstalled the drive in the original system I now get a message saying the Hal.dll file is corrupt or missing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.I would start by pulling all the data off the drive.

Next go to the manufactures web SITE and get the free tool to check the drive. This will let you test it and see if its really bad.

The corrupt boot.ini and missing hal.dll are related...
See This Fix.Patio,

I TRIED the fixes in the link you supplied, no luck

I went so far as to remove the HDD from a good system that was going to be scrapped and installing it in the system that was giving me problems.  I was able to boot into safe mode but it would not boot normally.

Could there be a problem with the BIOS, mother board, power supply that would lead to such a condition?

ThanksYou can't simply TAKE a HDD from one machine and expect it to boot in another...XP makes sure of this.
Reason is it is searching for the drivers from the machine it was installed on...
As far as diagnosing what could be at fault we need more info on what led up to this dilemna...
