Solve : windows freezing on startup?

Answer»

so i was installing a game, RUNNING itunes and running firefox all at the same time, and my computer wasn't happy about it, so it froze for a second. i let it do it's THING, and it kept continuing and freezing. so next chance i got, i closed firefox and itunes. this time, it froze entirely, so i had to do a hard reset. now windows won't load. it POSTs just fine, gets to the windows load screen and finishes, but then i'm just left with a black screen. i kept restarting and TRYING the last good CONFIG, but to no avail. now i'm in safe mode, and NEED some help in fixing this issue.i guess it fixed itself. ran it in safe for a little while, then re-booted and it loaded just fine.

Display rotated 90 Degrees
The Problem:-Display screen has rotated to 90 degrees clockwise.

The Resolution:-Open Control Panel>Display>Settings tab>advanced, navigate through the tabs to find a rotate display option. This option has come due to the graphic card you have installed. The option should allow you to rotate the display back to its original orientation.

Rotational adjustments can be found in advanced desktop settings. Quote from: billrich on March 22, 2009, 01:09:26 PM

Solve : WHAT CAN I DELETE? PC is soooo slow. Help!!?

Answer»

I have bad feelings about my PC lately. It is very slow. PC is from early 2004 so it's no puppy but I can not afford a new one right now.    (Single mom of toddler with dead-beat ex-husband) I have no ME money.

Anyway, when I put it on in the morning, I saw a WHITE page. Nothing else comes on screen. When I shut it off and then back on, I then see the blue Windows XP screen. (Phew!) I don't know what is going on. That happened two times. Now I refuse to shut the PC in fear of it never going back on once shut down. I AM NOT TECHNICAL AT ALL so go easy with the help please!!    Also, the fan used to get loud now and then but it seems to be always pretty loud.

I went to MY COMPUTER and see I only have 970MB of FREE SPACE. I don't know much but I believe that is very low.

MY QUESTION:    Is there anything I can delete that will make my PC run faster?  Besides in my MY PHOTOS folder which is pretty empty(25 pics), is there anther place some may be stored?? Maybe I can delete them??  The PC was purchased with ONE GB. I only use PC to surf net. No gaming, small amt of pics.  What the heck is using up all my space??

H E L P   P L E A S Ei cannot help very much , but you should post your pc stats here and your security

for an expert to see , harryIf I knew how, I would. Thanks. Maybe someone else can help please.

DeeThe fan being loud suggests two most likely reasons

1, its full of dust. Try removing the lid of blow out the dust (don't use vacuum as Static Electricity can kill the chips.

2, some bad software (think Virus or similar) is running your CPU at 100%

What are the details of the white page?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and LIST the process running in the process tab at the top of that screen

Please tell us the Make/Model of your PC (like Dell DIMENSION 4600 or what ever you'v got and even list like model number Part number serial number etc, the  we can look that up.

Try this goto Control panel-Internet options-advanced-reset, kills off most bugs at least temporarily buys you time. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

The loud fan is most likely caused by overworked CPU, which tries to squeeze some WORKING space out of 970MB of FREE SPACE.Hi Guys!!  (and Broni.....remember me?)

I copied some info. Maybe it will help you all help me. Let me know what you would like me do from here? I haven't DONE anything yet.

[attachment deleted by admin]With my experience, computers seem to just want to stop working after that many years. Not sure but are you keeping it up-to-date? I notice, newer programs demand more "performance" from the computer.

Therefore, if the computer isn't near or next to the sharpest tool in the shed a.k.a. top end model, new programs take FOREVER to load making it look like the computer is slowing up. I really don't run anything except Internet Explorer. No new programs & nothing fancy at all. I use Ebay and AOL for my e-mail. The AOL software is not even installed. I enter it from www.aol.com.

I am sure there is tons of stuff in this pc over time that I no longer use. (My ex-husband most likely downloaded al the 'extra' stuff inside this PC. He is no longer (hence the word 'ex') and I could probably delete so much stuff. Just dont know what do do or even what I have.

I listed some stuff that may help someone see what I am running. (see my last post)

ANYONE??? Please. I am scared to crash. It's just a bad time financially.

you have a lot of processes running but let broni sort that for you , harry 48

Solve : dos files being deleted?

Answer»

I have been searching and cannot come up with anything, So I thought I would post a question on here. I have made several dos batch files like C to D backup.exe and they work fine with my command lines in the batch file. I then have scheduled task set to run these and that WORKS as well ok. The problem is that some thing keeps deleting these files. I have a folder in the root of my hard drive called Utilities and have about 5 of these type batch files and they keep getting deleted. I can PUT them in there one day and a day or two later they are gone. I have gone into my antivirus software and EXCLUDED this folder and it made no difference. Does anyone have any idea why this happens?
Thanks
WayneVery strange they would be dissappearing from the root folder...
If you can post an example of one of the batch files and how exactly you are launching them we'll have a looksee...Here is the batch file I am using for my C-drive to D-drive backup:

Solve : HELP! Computer crashed & won't start ~ not even in safe mode?

Answer»

I'm writing from my husband's laptop because my DESKTOP is completely dead.

We were out of town for several days and I left my computer on and connected to the internet while we were gone.  Not smart but . . .

When we returned my desktop was running SLOW so I attempted to restart it. It locked up, I pressed/held the power button and when it restarted it attempted to run a disk check. The disk check locked up and I had to press/hold the power button again. When it restarted I got a blue screen ~ stop: C0000218 unknown hard error.

Sometimes when I attempt to restart it I get:

checking file system on C:
file system = NTFS

When I attempt to restart it in safe mode or safe mode with networking I get . . .

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\appPatch\drvmain.sdb multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ . . . (various items)

and it locks up with the dos commands above on the screen.

I attempted to start it in "debug" mode and it runs the check disk scan, says the scan has been completely successfully and needs to restart, the screen goes black, the Windows logo appears, the screen goes black again and stays black.

Everything I try ~ I just get a black screen or it locks up with DOS commands on it. What can I do to get my computer back and/or start in safe mode?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Sounds like your Boot.ini file has become corrupted.

Moving this topic to the Windows forum and closing the other one.Sounds like the hard drive MIGHT be bad. Quote from: evilfantasy on March 20, 2009, 05:24:01 PM

Sounds like your Boot.ini file has become corrupted.
Regarding the boot.ini file possibly being invalid.  I went through the process and added the installation to the boot list.

When I attempt to start my computer via boot from the CD the following occurs:

Welcome to Setup window appears.  If I hit "Enter" I get the Licensing Agreement page; I hit F8 to accept; I see

The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer.
-: Partition1 [FAT]    39 mb (31 mb free)
C: Partition2 [NTFS]   72849 mb (9100 mb free)
E: Partition3 [FAT32]    3397 mb (526 mb free)
    Unpartitioned space     8 mb

Options:  Enter=Install      D=Delete Partition             F3=Quit

I don't want to lose the INFORMATION (especially irreplaceable pictures of my son) that are currently on my hard drive.  I wouldn't mind wiping the hard drive (AGAIN) IF I could get the pictures off my hard drive.

What do I do??

Do I repair my computer via the repair mode?  When I attempt to do this I get a C:/ prompt and am not sure what to do next.

Thanks!Try this
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmYou are running low on space on that HDD.
To retrieve your pictures etc and back them up for safekeeping remove the drive and hook it up as a slave drive in a working machine with a burner...
Slave Drive Tutorial

After that i would suggest wiping all the partitions and re-sizing them ( don't know what the 39Mg one is) and do a clean install of Windows...

Solve : Deleting Files with .vbs script?

Answer»

I found this .vbs script in some old posts and have modified it for my application.  Under my main folder C:\Archive_Data I have subfolders that I would like the script to delete as well as the FILES in them.  As written the code deletes the files but leaves the empty folders.  Could "Sidewinder" or another show me what to add to accomplish this?  Thank you for your help.

Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set f = fso.GetFolder("E:\Archive_Data")           'point to your directory
Set colSubFolders = f.SubFolders

For Each objFolder in colSubFolders
   ShowFiles objFolder
Next

Sub ShowFiles(Fld)
   Set k = fso.GetFolder(Fld)
   Set s = k.SubFolders
   Set kf = k.Files

   For Each objFile In kf
         If objFile.DateCreated < date - 38 Then
            'WScript.Echo objFile & " " & objFile.DateCreated
                                fso.Deletefile(objFile)    'commented out
         End If
   Next

   For Each SubFolder In s
      ShowFiles SubFolder
   Next
End Subwell, try changing:
Code: [Select]   For Each SubFolder In s
      ShowFiles SubFolder
   Next

to:

Code: [Select]   For Each SubFolder In s
      ShowFiles SubFolder
      if Subfolder.Files.count=0 and subfolder.subfolders.count=0 then
          subfolder.deletefolder
      end if
   Next

another possible way would be to place, instead of the above:

Code: [Select]if k.files.count=0 and k.subfolders.count=0 then
    k.DeleteFolder
end if
at the end of the showfiles procedure.

I didn't test this however.

The idea is to delete the folder if it no longer contains any files or folders itself.

Here would be the fill script:

Code: [Select]Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set f = fso.GetFolder("E:\Archive_Data")           'point to your directory
Set colSubFolders = f.SubFolders

For Each objFolder in colSubFolders
   ShowFiles objFolder
Next

Sub ShowFiles(Fld)
   Set k = fso.GetFolder(Fld)
   Set s = k.SubFolders
   Set kf = k.Files

   For Each objFile In kf
         If objFile.DateCreated < date - 38 Then
            'WScript.Echo objFile & " " & objFile.DateCreated
                                fso.Deletefile(objFile)    'commented out
         End If
   Next

   For Each SubFolder In s
      ShowFiles SubFolder
   Next

    if k.files.count=0 and k.subfolders.count=0 then
        k.DeleteFolder
    end if

End Sub

Solve : Calling excel in a batch file and processing many TXT files.?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a situation I'm dealing with at work, and all I know to use for this is Excel.  If there is a better way, PLEASE fill me in.

I have a few THOUSAND CSV files in a standardized format.  There are fields that I use for calculations in Excel, and then I use those finished calculations to output a new txt file.

I have an Excel workbook with two worksheets in it.

The first worksheet is my input from the CSV and formula worksheet.  I copy/paste the text from my CSV and the formulas calculate some new numbers that appear in fields further down the row.  There is no macro, the target fields just have the formulas in them.

The second worksheet has the PERTINENT data taken from the input/formula worksheet placed into an organized linear format.  From this I copy/paste that data into a text editor so I wind up with LINES of the correct data.

It all works quite well, but even at 1 minute per CSV file input, that's a few THOUSAND minutes, and a lot of monotonous work.

Even after that I run a macro in the text editor to change my line data to block field data.  ADDING another half a minute and a few more mouse clicks to an already tedious task.

First question, how do I batch the CSV files through my Excel workbook so that Excel will take each CSV file in turn and create the desired output TXT file?

Second question, can Excel output the line data into my desired block field data at the same time?

As you can see, this would take a lot of stress out of my life.  I'm no programmer, but I know a little, very little perhaps, and I would appreciate any help.

My CVS input looks like this, except there are between 20 and 210 lines of this per file:

43115b3,0338_4792,633584.220,4789580.988

My linear output looks like this (if you ignore the word wrap) for each of the CSV lines:

0338_4792   UL   631303.260   4790848.188   UR   635865.180   4790848.188   LR   635865.180   4788313.788   LL   631303.260   4788313.788   -99

My text editor macro turns the linear data into block field data like this for each of the linear data lines:

0338_4792   UL   631303.260   4790848.188
      UR   635865.180   4790848.188
      LR   635865.180   4788313.788
      LL   631303.260   4788313.788
-99

(if your viewer doesn't show nice neat even columns and rows, well, it's supposed to)

Thanks for ANY help you can give me.

CarlHello and welcome to the forum.  I've used Excel for years but you have a rather complicated application there and I doubt I can help with it.  Someone else may have some advice.  In the mean time, I suggest you also register on http://www.excelforum.com/ and post your question there, too.

By the way, what version of Office are you using? Quote from: ke7fck on March 20, 2009, 06:17:50 PM

so you are trying to calculate a 4-column CSV file and then convert it to 14-column TXT file. and it doesn't have to be done in excel right? because in excel it takes more overhead when you load the application, import each of the csv file and then run the macro eventually.

in the 14-column txt file, if you could tell what each of the formula to obtain the VALUE, maybe someone can help you. and post a little bit more sample input data to check for pattern consistency.Maybe a database and script?

It may take you more time to write though then you might save, I don't know

Solve : Startup Chkdisk, anyone??

Answer»

Hello, I am CURRENTLY having some serious problems about STARTING my computers, it started one or two weeks ago when it bluescreened once or twice per day. I didn't quite pay attention back then since it started and I only needed it to RUN. Even though, I now am having some serious cases of bluescreening and starting problems. Everytime on startup, it makes a bluescreen of doom pop up and restart before I can see the error code, If I can get a long-enough bluescreen, sure, I'll post the error code right away, but for now, after thirty minutes of attempting to start the system, it finally switches to a primitive form of ChkDisk that tells me: "Please wait" for about two or three minutes, until windows actually starts! Showing me a black screen, my mouse and LSASS error codes telling me a DLL in system 32 is corrupt... the last error it popped me was that the DLL was nowhere to be found. Now it remains blankly on that black screen and does nothing else.

I would like to know, because I know ChkDisk can do wonders, if there is any way I could start it without going on windows.

If anyone knows where that problem comes from... I know it survived a full system formatting, thus... I really don't know where it's hidden. Even if after the formatting, it went like a charm until I begun getting errors again. I installed Registry mechanic to check my registry every one or two hours and well... It found some new registry errors every 4-5 hours. I start to beleive it is hardware-related, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. Anyway. Thanks for your help.

Currently using a Windows XP Home SP2 non-validated for fixing purpose.

This is your main problem. NEVER install garbage like this. What was the reason to install it in the first place?
Did the BSODs start right after fresh installation?Post the entire BSOD message including the gibberish...Sorry for the time it TOOK, I definately checked around everything for a way to leave the bluescreen on but... As of now, it simply doesn't pop up the BSOD anymore. I'll try reformatting the system and force it to have some... I'll post back when I finally get to it since now windows starts like if there were no problems and a black screen remains. In any case, I'll keep that info about registry mechanic (Which I suspected to be a deep sh't in first place)

I got the BSOD like four to five hours after the first fresh installation, then had to reformat it because I couldn't start it properly, then I was able to maintain it on by using registry mechanic (It actually did something good for once) and clearing registry errors as they appeared. In any case, I'll get to it at the moment and try to make a BSOD appear. You never need to check your registry this much!!  I know, CWeb, I only did so so I could find the problem while my pc not crashing on me, but the only problem is that I finally found out the problem when On the re-formatting, my pc couldn't recognize my hard disk and couldn't read the hard disk anymore -,-' I beleive it finally died on me, the poor thing.

Solve : Ripping with Windows Media Player 11?

Answer»

Windows Media Player always shows each TRACK twice in the "LIBRARY" lists when I rip cd's into it. Yet cd's are shown as "normal" in My Music folders. Any IDEAS please?Just a THOUGHT, but it may be adding tracks directly from the CD into the Library, and then again after you burn them  Look at the file extensions...it may be the Album COVER artwork.

Solve : losing internet connection?

whenever i try to close a PAGE while on the internet, everything closes and i go right back to my desktop. my computer seems to be running slower too. i have mcfee and have ran disk clean up and defragmented it. any suggestions? What browser, version?i have windows xp. i disabled the add ons that say browser helper object and that seems to have fixed the problem. now, are they useless items or will i need to enable them to use some things. here is a list of what i disabled:
       Adobe PDF link helper
       AOL toolbar launcher
       AOL search hook class
       askbar BHO
       CBrowser helper object
       gamevance
       gamevance class
       gamevance text
       google dictionary comp
       google toolbar helper
       google notifier
       java(tm) plug-in 2 SSV
       JQSIE start detector imp
       McAfee phishing filter
       msn toolbar helper
       scriptproxy
       search helper
       yahoo IE services button
       yahoo toolbar helper

my computer still seems to be a little slower while on the internet and freezes up on occasions.  should i also disable items that says browser extension?

thanks for the help You probably should disable all extra browser add-ons to free up some resources. I would ADVISE to try using a different browser and see if that HELPS. I PERSONALLY prefer Firefox. In my experience it beats Internet Explorer in pretty much every category. The only sites you might have problems with are those which use ActiveX and possibly ASP. Good luck. You still didn't answer what browser, what version?

Solve : Internet Explorer 7 is crashing with 0cx0000005?

Answer»

Hi,
One of our PCs here has been running xp pro with IE7 for a month or so quite happily. Recently, however, when the user is in IE7 the PC crashes with the usual "send error report" screen.

I looked at the technical info in the error report and found the following: -

Exception Information.
Code: 0xC0000005
Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000
Address: 0x00000000435efba0

I tried unistalling and reinstalling IE7 but this changed nothing.

I then tried sfc /scannow but that alleviated the problem but did not fully cure it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.....Go into your "Internet Options." On the "Advanced" TAB, click the "Reset..." button.

This will bring IE7 back to factory default (besides the favorites.)  You'll have to reinstall all the addons, reconfigure the homepage, etc. but there's a GOOD chance it will solve your problem.Hi,
I did this thanks, and according to the user, the problem grew worse.

In desperation, I have REPLACED the PC with a rebuilt one I had in reserve.

I took the OFFENDING PC back to my desk only to find that I could not REPRODUCE the error there. I have been getting the errors frequently when I sat at the users desk on the PC.

MMMMM!!!!!!!!

NOTE If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as AdministratorThanks for all the help. It turns out that this is a problem when using igoogle.

e.g. www.google.co.uk/ig

If the user signs in to igoogle he keeps getting the problem. If he does not sign in, he doesn't get the problems.

My boss has advised him to stay out of igoogle. He could also create a new iGoogle page just as a test...I may be owing google an apology.

Another of our PCs developed the same fault and it has gone nowhere near igoogle.

The PC is an older xp PC running IE7. After the problem developed, I removed IE7 leaving IE6 (IE7 looks like an extention to IE6 rather than an independant program). IE6 was stable.

I re installed IE7 and all was well for about twenty minutes. Then the same problem occurred.

I have left the PC running IE6 and all is running well.

Use your CD installation Disk and choose the repair OPTION

Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.
Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option.
If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.
Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials.

Solve : Memory install?

Answer»

Would DDR DIMM MEMORY and SDram memory installed make a computer slow? Don't UNDERSTAND...are you saying both are installed ? ?
If so post your MBoard info...What I'm TRYING to say if you have both memory sticks ddram and sdram would they make the computer run slow? One STICK of each in the same computer same amount of ram like two 512mb, acutally 1gb. Are you saying your motherboard two pairs of memory slots, for two different types of memory?  If so, I'm sure the answer is that you can not use both types simultaneously, you must choose one or the other.

I have a system with an ECS K7S5A Pro motherboard.  It can use either PC133 SDRAM or PC2100 DDR RAM, but not both at the same time.  Thanks alot.

I THINK that the solution is, if that appears at Windows log on screen just press twice CTRL+ALT+DEL , after you see the loging page just write Administrator without a password and it will work.
If this is not going to help you... Just leave a note here and tell us more details please.
Cheers.we are not permitted to since it violates the rules.  I got yelled at before trust me.Im guessing you mean a boot password? Seeing as its against the rules it seems to discuss it, google it? Solve : getting "no profile created" notice when attempting to forward a page?

Answer» WHENEVER forwarding a page that I am VIEWING to another person, I have always just CLICKED on "page" on the command bar(upper right) and then clicked on either "send link by email" or "send page by email"  and it has always worked fine.  Recently, whenever I try to do this, I get a notice that says "No profile created-To create a profile click on MAIL icon in control panel."  I clicked on "control panel" then "user accounts" then "mail" and it does indeed show no profiles.  Can someone instruct me on how to create a profile that might fix this problem?  I would also be interested to know why this suddenly started happening.  Please forgive me if I have not explained this well.  I am certainly no computer whiz, but do know a LITTLE about it.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Solve : Dell PC Reformatting!?

Answer»

I have tried fixing this for a week by myself, but it's just not getting anywhere.

My sister has a Dell DIMENSION 3100 desktop computer that BADLY needed reformatting. I did, and then went on the official Dell website from my computeR to download the needed DRIVERS (video, ethernet, etc...). I then put the drivers on a USB key, transfered them to my sister's computer, and installed them (My sister lost the original CD that came with her computer). However, it didn't seem to have done anything! No Internet whatsoever and can't OPEN much of the stuff because we get some kind of video card driver problem error message.

If any of you could help out, it would be greatly appreciated! Revisit the Dell site and enter her SERVICE Tag #....
Those will be the correct drivers.
MBoard chipset drivers go FIRST.

Solve : windows xp clean up hard drive?

Answer»

I was given a computer that is running WINDOWS xp home edition. It shows that it is a 9 GB hard drive. At the moment it only has a little over 2 GB of free space. I need to free up more space. I have run the disk cleanup, I have run disk Defrag (even though it says some files won't defrag) I have ran the %temp% and deleted every thiing that had .tmp on it.  (This still leaves some items there because I don't know what they are) I clean out all the emails (it had over 4500 emails on it) and yet I can't get any more space on it.  I do not have an internet CONNECTION to it and don't plan on getting one. All I want it for is to edit and adjust my photos on. While my son plays games on this computer

When I click on my computer and then Hard Drive C: there are several small blue file cabinet icons. I do not know what these are.  They show that they were created in 1999. Some say Win98 and then numbered 1 - 40.

I don't know what to unistall.  I did reduce the size of the recycle bin. I did DISABLE the hibernation. And I adjusted the system restore point. Any suggestions would helpcan you post screenshots of the small blue file cabinet icons?not sure how to do that. I will try and move it from the computer in basement and bring it up hereGo to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove any programs you no longer use.....Be sure you know what you are removing....... Don't remove any of those files, you could end up with a brick instaed of a PC......To make a screenshot.....press the PrtScr key , Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint.........Paste[quote authoro=depdan link=topic=86076.msg575216#msg575216 date=1245709060]

[/quote]

Are these in the root folder of C:\, or in- say, "C:\windows\precopy" or something to that effect?

Either way, it sounds like they are the windows 98 Cabinet files used for install of Win98. A lot of manufacturers put them on the PC when they were sent out with windows 98, so that the user wouldn't need the CD.

Looks to me, that this PC of yours started life with windows 98 and was upgraded to windows XP, leaving a few remnants of it's origins, not the least of which is the windows 98 Cabinet files.

You can safely delete the cabinet files.

When I go to my computer and then click on C: all of the cabinets are there on the screen along with other folders. Some of these folders are empty and others still have info in them. For example some folders are Windows, WUTemp, Scans, Win98, Fax, etc. There are other little blue file cabinets with 2 grey drawers marked Driver18, driver19, Net, Catalog, Win98, etc

I transfered one of the cabinets from downstairs to up here. But I can't make the screen shot work. I'm not sure how you would paste it to this post.

Is there some way to get a Windows XP disk that I could just reinstall the system and start all over again without any of that old information there?Have you considered a NEW drive ? ?
Storage is dirt cheap right now...and we could assist with doing a direct copy of your existing drive to a new one so you wouldn't miss a beat...OK, hopefully I've attached an image that shows what the file cabinet looks like. Thank you to everyone who has responded. I really do appreciate the suggestions and ideas.

[attachment deleted by admin]just wanted to pass along that after a lot of trial and error I did manage to free up some more space. It now shows that there is 3.55 gigs of free space which is more that I had to begin with. I was also finally able to get a modem put in so I can get back on the internet with that computer in the basement. At the moment the only annoying thing is when I turn it on now I get a blue screen that tells me scandisk needs to check some of the drives for errors. Is this normal?

Danyes, if it has 98 on it.  I havent messed with that stuff in a while.  I would just do fresh install if I were you but THATS up too you.  Look for music an video files, thats not a huge drive so your very limited here.

Solve : New computer, same old problem?

Answer»

The user's old computer decided to crash and she bought a new one from Dell. Optiplex 360 loaded with xp pro 500gb hd and 4gb memory. We added Office, AVG, Ad-aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, the latest FLASH and Shockwave, Itunes, Belarc advisor, AOL 9.0 and Firefox.

I got ANOTHER sos email and it appears that IE opened up multiple windows when she shut down the internet window in AOL.

So, it appears the same problem is happening on a brand new machine, with maybe 3 HOURS of internet time. I don't think it is viruses, I think there is something between IE and AOL.

My question is this, since she has Firefox loaded, can I rename IE to iexplorer.ex_ or will that mess up the computer? For update I can show her how to change the NAME back, but for daily operation Firefox should be used in my opinion.

Any thoughts on this plan?

Thanks

P4 2.8ghz 4gb ram XP Pro sp3 Quote

can I rename IE to iexplorer.ex_
Why? Simply don't touch it.
Is it IE8?in either case the file is iexplore, not iexplorer.Where are my eyeglasses? Thanks for the replies, allow me to clarify.

Ok, I got the name wrong, but the question still stands. The user does not touch IE and it is 7 not 8. When she opened up an internet window in the AOL client and then closed it IE opened up a window with multiple tabs where each tab was the page she just closed in AOL.

I want to know if renaming IE in it's folder will in some way affect operations of the computer aside from getting updates? For the updates I can show her how to reset the name, get the updates and rename IE. But if renaming IE makes the computer unbootable what other options are there? This is some mess between AOL browser, which is based on IE engine, and IE itself.
I don't even want to go there, because I never used AOL, I barely use IE, so I simply don't know what's going on here.
Maybe someone else with better knowledge will pop in here.Don't worry. I wasn't nitpicking over the name; Just making sure, since there is Explorer.exe, which is important, and iexplore, for IE. If you renamed explorer by accident, it would prevent booting, so I was just making sure there wasn't any confusion on that regard.

renaming IE will not make the PC unbootable, though. Most components that use IE rendering (for example, help files) use the DLLs and not the EXECUTABLE, (although there are exceptions).

Just try renaming it, and see what works, and what doesn't.

One other option, is to try setting the Preferred program (set program access and defaults) to Firefox for browsing (if that hasn't been done already). Thanks again.

Firefox is the default browser, but on closing IE is the one that opens up. I will rename iexplore and let you know.

Solve : computer locked in power saver mode?

Answer»

Sorry, I was reading all the topics and I got switched off to safe mode.  Actually my computer is locked in power saver mode.  How it got there I don't know.  The processor sounds just like it did before, it sounds like it is STARTING up.  The monitor screen is black, no dell start up or windows start up, no start icon to click on.   The lights are on steady green on the tower and the monitor.  I have CHECKED all the connections and the electricity.  Help, I live in a very rural area and have just been able to get back to hi speed internet 2 months ago and now am UNABLE to use it! Did you try Safe Mode? How do I get in safe mode when nothing shows up on monitor screen?I assume then, when you start the computer, there is COMPLETELY nothing on the screen, correct?
If so, try different monitor, or try THIS monitor with another computer. It is a flat screen, SOMETIMES you see the windows xp just for a second, sometimes not, I have checked all the plugs, etc.  The processor sounds the same, the lights are on.   When I push one of the little buttons on the monitor it gives the message, in power saver mode push any key or move mouse, but this doesn't work. Solve : DriveImage XML woes, need help getting back my files! Please!?

Answer»

Hi, I recently ran an image backup of my hard drive using Runtime Software's DriveImage XML (heard about it on pcworld.com).

I did this because one way or another, I damaged my Windows XP install (and maybe my disk itself... not entirely sure about that), and certain services (windows INSTALLER, system restore, some networking) just refused to start or cooperate.

Since I had my OS and personal data on one partition, I figured I'd back up the entire HDD, wipe it CLEAN, reinstall XP, then restore my back up to a separate partition, but this time, only copy over some things i need to keep (My DOCS, Music, etc.).

The problem is, when i restore my back up using DriveImage, the data is unreadable by XP. First, it gave me an 'access denied' error when i tried to open the partition i restored my backup to. On the second TRY, it tells me this partition is formatted as the RAW filesystem, and nothing can be done to it. However, when i look at the backup in progress, the window informs me in real time what files are being restored, and i see all my documents. Im sure the backup is healthy in some way, but possibly due to my failing hard drive at time of backup it is not going as smoothly as it should be.

Any help is appreciated! I really need my files back. Thanks!Try booting from a GParted CD - it might give you more information about the partition.  Might even do a better job of ACCESSING the files than XP does.Actually, I've been a fan of the Gparted CD for quite some time now. However, I'm not really familiar enough with Lunix to make any use of it other than resizing/editing partitions. One thing it did tell me was that, after to my first image backup of my HDD, there were physical errors on the disk, and before i could do anything to my main partition, i had to run chkdsk from Windows to fix the errors on the disk. After that, it worked fine and gladly resized my partitions. But, i learned that i ran teh image backup prior to fixing these errors. Is this of any significance to restoring the backup?Probably.  You can't expect the image to restore completely satisfactorily.  Try it.

Solve : DVD drive reads cds but not dvds?

my computer has a DVD CD ROM i used to be able to play DVDs but then it STOPPED working. it will still works for CDs. when i insert a DVD all it will do is MAKE the humming sound like it should but then is stops and dose nothing. when i go to my computer and open the drive it is blank as if i hadn't put anything in it. please help!!!System INFO, please.

Make/model at least.
Is it a Toshiba?my computer is an IBM t42The drive is probably dead...replace it.Might be worth a clean first.  There's a possibility that the DVDs you happen to be using require a higher power laser to read properly.  If the lens is dirty the read operation would fail.  I'd EXPECT to see a similar problem with certain CD-RWs and coloured CD-Rs.  Failing that, I'd agree with Pat.I agree, I had this happen with my playstation an had to clean the lense.  I would attempt that first.

Solve : Is quickbooks making my screen fuzzy??

Answer»

I have a office computer that we run our bookkeeping on. The monitor gets so fuzzy it gives you a headache. It is not the hardware this has been going on through 3 computers and DIFFERENT monitors different location etc. The only thing consistant is the quickbooks software. None of the other computers in the office have it and they are fine. Anyone ever here of a problem like this? Just a little more info. At first the screen is ok and it gets worst as the day goes on. It acualy looks as though the letters are shaded as if they are shifted to the left a hair kinda like a fuzzy 3d effect.... What kind of monitor are you using?  I WOULD be 99% convinced that this was not caused by Quickbooks.

Specs of monitor and base UNIT (graphics card if possible) would be helpful.Hi Rob sorry I take so long to get back. I am a a/c man and it is 100 degrees here
The current monitor is a lenova 17 in flat screen that came with a lenova computer I bought last year. The lenova computer it came with did the same thing that's why I got rid of it. Before you think it might be the monitor it did the same thing with a hp 15 in flat screen.
The board has built in video and is a gigabyte with 4 processors and 4 gig of memory.

Like I said before the confusing thing about it is it has done this through 3 computers and 2 different monitors  Do you get this kinda "ghost image" on  the desktop as well?......I had a similar case where I thought I was going to have to swap a power supply, but when the tower was moved from the floor to the desk the problem cleared......so I'm guessing the problem was with the monitor or ROUTER connection and the movement was sufficient to stop the problem....Wouldn't hurt to doublecheck connections all around.Karnac may be thinking along the right lines.  These computers you've experienced the same issue on - have they all been located in the same place?  If so, do they exhibit the same behaviour if placed elsewhere in the office?  I'm thinking magnetic interference PERHAPS (although I've not particularly heard of TFTs suffering from that - it's a CRT phenomenon).

This isn't a really old version of Quickbooks with a parallel port dongle is it?Man I have tried everything. The tower is on the floor and it is in a different part on the room that it was before. I had a ups on it but I disconected that. I built the current unit a couple of months ago and it worked fine untill we loaded the bookkeeping software on it. And it has the latest quickbooks.

- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (OPEN "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

Solve : i can play dvd's but not cd's?

Answer»

I have a asus quietrack which should be able to play both dvds & cds but has stopped playing cds. when i put cds in it makes a humming sound LIKE as if its loading but then just stops.can anyone help me pls1. Try booting from your Windows XP CD (as it is a CD, not a DVD). If it proceeds to BOOT from the disc fine, exit setup and restart.

2. Try booting into safe mode. Does the drive work properly there?

3. If it doesn't boot from the CD and doesn't work properly in safe mode, the lens might be dirty. Try a lens cleaner.

If NONE of that works, you can try through the steps here:

Solve : Computer shut down.?

Answer»

My computer just shut down again, always when I'm in the middle of something.  This is the message I got.  It is a little DIFFERENT from the last.

Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

         VER_IRQL_NOT_ LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
If it appears again follow these steps:

Check hardware for proper installation.  Uninstal any hardware that was not installed properly.  (How am I suppose to know this.)  Restart in safe mode and disable BIOS memory options.
Technical INFORMATION:

I have been removing the last 2 or 3 drives, that wasn't it.  I loaded and ran
Advanced system care and Auslogic products, that did help a little.

MAY be this can help: http://www.mpfspromotions.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t64406.htmlOpen Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

Mini dump file is empty.  I did go to the forum that evgeny posted.  Someone has posted the exact same problem and error pages.  I am getting a message that a device is installed incorrectly.  I'm going to his progress on in that forum and see if it does not help me.Mini dump file is empty.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel (Start>Control Panel in Vista).
2. Double-click System.
3. Click (Advanced system settings link in Vista, then --->)the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k).

Solve : Big Problem - Cant reformat?

Answer»

Hello guys,

I have a huge issue with my other computers. First off I cannot get in VIA regular start, safe mode or anything. When I try to boot from CD to reformat it tells me it has encountered an error and shuts down. I am also unable to press "r" as it does not get that far into the setuo si u can do chkdsk /f to try and fix this.

Please offer tips on how I can get AROUND this. I have been stuck for a while and do not know what else I can do.

Regards,
DanWhat type of CD are you booting to ? ?
Forget the R option for now and SEE if Setup will run...im using the windows XP install DISK. Setup runs until it encounters that error.you can try  dban=Dariks boot and nuke. Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate UTILITY for bulk or emergency data destruction. since you cant boot xp and keep having errors with setuptry DBAN you have nothing to lose!    http://www.dban.org/download

Solve : I CAN'T CHANGE COMPUER NAME?

Answer»
I have windows XP professional sp2; recently I made a partition using EASEUS partition software and it's ok and I changed the NAME then restarted. After that window says Disk Error and asked me to put windows XP CD, I put the CD and I thought that to REPAIR the window but CONTINUE installation then I stopped it. Restarted the PC, and gave me 2 windows and F8 option. I pressed F8 and the two windows appeared and I selected my original window then pressed inter. And then selected Last Known Good Configuration and press inter and repaired my window. And I  opened the window and  copied the i386 from the CD to my program files. And I changed the name then restarted and asked me the same thing. I did the same process. And now, when I saw the computer name, STILL not changed.
                       Right now, my question is
1. Why I can't change Computer name?
 2. How can I delete the new window that I stopped recently?

                               Please guys help me

                                      Thanks
I suspect you now have Windows installed twice...
To check this open Windows Explorer and see what it lists for the WinNT folder...

Solve : New user of IE8?

Answer»

A few days ago I CONTACTED a malware PROBLEM. I used the recommended
tools and took CARE of EVERYTHING great.
Now I have just downloaded IE 8 and it seems like it takes 4 times as long for it to load as the IE7 I was using. Going from PAGE to page is slower
and some links within pages I can't click into. Everything seems to be working OK but my medium skills tell me there could be a problem because of the slow speed.
  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BucxAs far as I know IE8 still has issues.completed change back to IE7

Solve : Blu Screen, Beginning dump of physical memory?

Answer»

I use Win XP Home Edition, version 5.1.2600 Service Pack Build 2600. When using Windows my COMPUTER will crash with a blue screen, beginning dump of Physical Memory. I will turn computer off. Sometimes Windows will load again, but other times a black screen appears and says to either reboot from CD or to press Ctr\Alt\Del over and over again. When I have tried to RELOAD Windows, everything loads, but when instructed to press Enter, screen comes up that it can't lad because of disk problem. Help!!Next time it runs properly run chkdsk from Programs/Accessories/System Tools...
Let it run til it finishes which may take awhile and then re-boot.I have run the CHKDSK, but it still happens. Is there a program I can download to repair this problem or some part of Windows XP that I can use to help? I have even tried to reinstall the Windows and then did the R (repair) but it same thing.Go to Start/Run and TYPE in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy.
When it finishes REMOVE the CD and re-boot.

If this does not clear it up the machine is probably overheating and needs some housekeeping...There are times when I turn my computer on I will hear what it sounds like is the black fan located on the top right of my console. It makes a loud sound and sometimes the sound will slowly stop. If it is this fan overheating where or how can I find out if it is overheating?I would remove a side panel and see what it looks like in there...
BEST item for cleaning is a soft brush and a can of compressed air...
Use a QTip to hold fans in blace when blasting them to prevent damage.

As always when working in the case remove all power sources and take static precautions...

Solve : Certain services don't start or they terminate when I log in?

Answer»

Hi there everyone, I've had this problem seemingly after I ran this TCPFix everyone was recommending. Suddenly, when I log in, I don't have sound, (Windows Audio service isn't started), and some of the blue bars are gone. (Windows Themes is not started/or has randomly closed.) Checking the event viewer, I saw a few interesting things:

Code: [Select]The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Windows Management Instrumentation service, but this action failed with the following error:
An instance of the service is ALREADY running.

Code: [Select]The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Themes service, but this action failed with the following error:
An instance of the service is already running.
*censored*?

Code: [Select]The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Windows Management Instrumentation service, but this action failed with the following error:
An instance of the service is already running.

And that one came up again. Odd.

So if anyone has any answers to this oddity, please give them out.
P.S. SERVICES are set to automatic mode.Did you try system restore?Well, I'd rather not to, do I have to?I'm talking about system restore (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore), not recovery CD, or partition.
System restore deals with Windows files only. Your data is safe.Ok, I'll give it a go then. I'll be BACK with the results.Ok, system restore seems to have done the trick. Kaspersky is freaking out right now though, saying it's DATABASE is corrupted. Guess I'll have to reinstall it.

Thanks for your help!You're welcome

Solve : Computer start up in loop that doesn't end?

Answer»

on START up it goes in: "CHECKING FILE SYSTEM ON C:  THE TYPE OF THE FILE SYSTEM IS NTFS.  THE VOLUME IS DIRTY.  CHKDSK vERIFIES FILES, INDEXES AND RECOVERS THEN REBOOTS AND STARTS OVER again and again....

from the boot menu, I select hard DRIVE diagnostics and receive the following message:
Drive 0: Maxror 7L250S0-Fail.  Return code 7

what does that mean?  Am i completely hosed?

help meIf you can back up the data on that drive, by all means do so.

Yes, that means the drive's probably on its last leg (or totally hosed)...

Depending on how much the data is worth on that drive, you COULD take the drive to a data recovery specialist.  EXPECT to pay big $$$$, though.

Alternatively, there are some homebrew ways to get the drive spinning just long enough to get the data off of the drive.  Google around and see what you find, but use them at your own risk.I got a drive running for a few mins after putting it in the freezer. Remember to put in an sealed plastic bag.

Solve : how I determine the extension of this file??

Answer»

Hello
I have problem with a big file that I recently download. I accidentally delete file name and also its extension. Now I don’t remember what file I downloaded (because my download folder is full of FILES) and what is its extension.
I test MANY extensions like: zip, rar, bz2, tar, tar.pz2, PDF, chm, and many others.

Please someone help
Thanks
I don't understand what you are trying to do..... Searching for a deleted file?Try this site k_mohsen, the scanner recognizes quite a few different file types.
http://mark0.net/onlinetrid.aspx

If it's a large file it might take some time to upload it to the server, so have patience. There is a much easier way to identify the file extension.

The fastest way would be to START Command Prompt and drag the file into the Window. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 07, 2009, 09:36:43 AM

That didn't work for me at all.

THANK you for that link, it should come in handy.Attached a screenshot.

[attachment deleted by admin]Carbon that only works for you because Windows is hiding the extension from you, it is still there. The OP is saying he/she have deleted the file extension.
You can unhide your extensions by doing this:
- select Start | Settings | Control Panels | Folder Options
- select the View tab
- UNcheck "hide file extensions for known file types"
- Click OK to finish Quote from: pragma on July 07, 2009, 10:39:37 AM

If that's the case, your solution won't work either.

If the file extension itself has been deleted, either download the file again, check the download source or check the download logs. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 07, 2009, 10:40:38 AM

Well, it worked for me when I tested it.

Thanks pragma for clarifying what I meant, I was eating which is why I didn't reply to Carbon straight away.Yes it will... that is the whole point of that scanner. It scans the file header to determine what type of file it is, it doesn't look at the file extension at all. Why don't you try it before you make rash judgments?
Remove or rename the extension on a file and give it a spin. It doesn't always work, but it is better than nothing. Quote from: pragma on July 07, 2009, 10:45:35 AM

I'm talking about your second suggestion......My second suggestion?Carbon - at this point I must ask, did you read pragma's suggestion and post properly?  Did you read the original post properly?
From what you're saying it doesn't look like you've understood what either the OP or pragma is saying. Now that I re-read the topic:

Was that directed at me? I'm under the impression that it's advice for K_mohsen.It was.
I got the impression you didn't know Windows hides extensions.

Solve : Problem trying to reformat?

Answer»

I'm trying to reformat windows xp on my laptop. I put in the CD and boot from the CD. During windows setup i get different errors everytime. These are the errors in the order I got them...

1: STOP: c0000221  Unknown Hard error\SystemRoot\System32\ntll.dll
2: Acpi.sys is corrupted
3: Vga.sys is corrupted
4: STOP: c0000221  Unknown Hard error\SystemRoot\System32\ntll.dll

I quit trying after that. Some things i might MENTION are that before I get the error, the disk in the cd drive starts beeping and sounds like it is having a hard time STARTING up. I am wondering if maybe the CD drive is bad? I checked the disk and it's perfectly clean so i don't think it's the disk... Any thoughts???

Thank you!!Yeah...  I have some thoughts...

Why did you decide to INSTALL (reinstall?) Windows XP?

Are you using a MICROSOFT retail CD, an OEM install CD, or an OEM recovery/restore CD?

During what part of windows setup do you ENCOUNTER errors?  Or alternatively, how many minutes into the setup process are you before you error out?

Try a different bootable CD.  For example, a bootable memory test CD (www.memtest86.com).  That would test basic functionality of your CPU, memory, CD reads).
