Solve : new hard drive w. xp installed but won't boot?

Answer»

Okay, I just got a shiny new hard DRIVE but when I FORMATTED it and installed windows xp on it it does nothing.  It I try to just BOOT up like normal it will just show the dell for a second and go to a black screen.  It will PRETEND to read the disk for hours until I shut it off.  I've created a single large partition and installed xp on it already but when I try to install xp on it it tells me that that I shouldn't install 2 operating systems on 1 drive so I assume that the first time I installed it, it installed correctly.  I've tried changing the boot order so that the hard drive boots before the CD or anything else.  I've also tried a repair and couldn't figure that out.  I've even reformatted and reinstalled xp once.  Please, what am I missing or where did I go wrong. Thanks, Boots  Did you remember to set the drive or first partition as active when you set it up ? ?

Solve : task manager disabled by administrator?

Answer»

I have a HP with Windows XP.  Whenever I hit ctrl/alt/delete to stop an errant program this is the message I get:  "task manager disabled by administrator"
I was TOLD to go to "start/run and typed in 'msconfig'.  All start up boxes are checked.
Any ideas?

Thanks... Marcusmsconfig has nothing to do with it.
When did you loose the ability to use the task manager? It might be a virus that has disabled it to prevent discovery.
But you can try the following to restore it. (Note that this fix will only work on XP pro.)

Select start and 'run...'.
type gpedit.msc and hit enter.
Now double click 'User configuration', double click 'Administrative Templates'
double click 'System', press 'Ctrl+Alt+Del options'
Now in the left window double click 'Remove Task Manager'
Set the radio button to Disabled.
You may or may not need to restart for the change to take effect. If this is your PC, that is, if the "administrator" is you, and you have not deliberately disabled Task Manager, if this restriction was enabled in your system without you doing anything or without your knowledge, then it's highly likely that a virus has blocked the usage of Task Manager in your system by enabling the DisableTaskMgr policy via the REGISTRY.

I strongly suggest that you perform a thorough checkup of your system immediately.

Try this to get Task Manager back

Click Start, Run and paste this into the box & click OK and then reboot

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

That will not cure the virus though!
I have XP Home Edition.  I'll try your fix anyways of course. Any suggestions for XP Home if the XP Pro fix does not work?  And thank you very much for your help.

MarcusThank you Contrex... Yes this is my home PC and yes the task manager was diabled without my knowledge.  I do online banking.  Should I redo my passwords? Quote from: markw47 on July 21, 2007, 05:50:22 AM

Thank you Contrex... Yes this is my home PC and yes the task manager was diabled without my knowledge.  I do online banking.  Should I redo my passwords?

Not a bad idea. I change mine every 3 MONTHS even when everything's fine.

Contrex... you are a genius!!  That worked perfectly. I now have my task manager back.

When you say I should perform a thorough check up of my computer though I am not sure what you mean.  I have Norton Anti-Virus and Webroot Spy Sweeper. I did have some problems with a virus about a month ago and kept getting some pop up warnings but Norton took care of it apparently because I don't seem to be having any problems now except for the task manager. It might be that the disabled task manager was just a residue from the virus attack. But you could try an online virus SCANNER like Panda ActiveScan and see if it finds any problems.

Uncanny... just what I was about to say.
I give Panda a try and report my findings.  Thanks again and again.   what would you suggest if in addition your task manager is being disabled, you have not desktop icons or task bar and it is not responding to any mouse clicks or key combinations?bjack2345

Solve : Backing up and installing new OS?

Answer»

I have XP pro as my operating system but do not have a disk and am having problems with it. I have a copy of XP Home and want to save the data I have but install XP Home instead. Just wondering how to do this without losing any data.
Thanks. Why not just borrow an XP Pro CD and do a Repair Install of XP  ? ?
A Home CD can't be used on a Pro install and VICE versa...I had someone fix my computer a few years ago and think it was a pirated version since i cant do any windows updates. I have an OFFICIAL home version and would like to use that instead. Then by all means backup ALL the data you need from that drive format and do a CLEAN install...
Assemble all your device Drivers prior to doing so and remember that all Windows Updates will have to be DLoaded and installed afterwards...

NOTE: If your install CD includes SP1 you should be able to just DLoad SP3 and install it...this will save the chore of doing SP2 first and save valuable time.
Make sure your protection apps are installed and updated before connecting to the web...an unprotected machine can get infected in minutes...Thanks a lot for the info what do you mean by assembling device drivers? Sorry this is my first time doing any thing this major on a comp and dont want to mess any thing up and not be able to recover.drivers for external an internal devices such as video,sound,scanner,camer,ect......  If some one has made this machine such as dell they would also have them on there site if you are UNABLE to find the disk.Use DriverMax: http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/ to back up all drivers.
It'll let you reinstall them later.you spiked my interest please tell me what are the capabilites?Did you go to the link?just did so it will only work for xp and vist dud hu?  So it basically looks at your hardware in the registry an finds new drivers for it?  ?  What is windows 2003?Finding new drivers is not the point here, since in general it's not recommended to update drivers, unless there is something wrong with them.
The whole point is:
Quote

You can also export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!
[...]
After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 minutes - sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.
ah  Yes oh  I tried to download drivermax and it keeps closing when i try to install. Are there any other good programs i can use

Solve : My laptop speakers don't turn off when I plug in my head phones....?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my laptop, for some reason, when I plug in speakers, or headphones, it doesn't turn off its own crappy speakers, which causes problems on the train, for example...

I'm definatly plugging them into the right place, and have checked all my SETTINGS, as far as I know. I got this laptop from a friend, and they seem to have installed realtek HD audio manager.  This might be the problem, but I don't really know what else to use.

Windows XP home edition
Service pack 3

Laptop make is Advent

Please ASSIST. I would be eternally grateful...When did this start?

What Operating System?

If you go to Device Manager, are there any yellow QUESTION or exclamation marks? Its ALWAYS been the case, ever since i got the laptop from my friend.

Operating system is windows xp

There are no yellow questions or exclamations in Device manager..

Thanks hopefully someone can sort it It is hardware. Contact the maker and see if this is a 'feature' or a defect.

To change it it requires a disastrously repair of the laptop.
Not a good idea.

Try different headphones.
The plug may be a millimeter undersized.
Different headphones don't work, have tried that.
You really think it must be hardware? might it not be the realtek playing some sorta silly buggers with the thing? is there something I could replace it with, just to check.
Wait a sec... Which Laptop is it? There are a few where you turn off the built in speakers with their own mechanical volume control. Look on the front edge, the side, somewhere there is a volume control, not the one you normally use. It is just for the built in speakers.  lol, nope, still not it

Thanks again for trying I don't have what you're talking about Geek-9pm.

Lugh, ask your friend about it.

Also, when you put the earphones into the computer, can you hear ANYTHING from them?

Solve : Recover data from hd through a USB enclosure w/o formatting?

Answer»

The title basically says it...I still have my old Dell Dimension L933r desktop with Windows ME as its OS, and it has not been able to boot and couldn't find a solution to it(the motherboard was going out) so i decided to see if i could salvage the data from the HD through a usb enclosure...and copy the data to my main comp's HD(specs are shown in my profile)

how can i do this without formatting it?
Connect it, and dont format it...

Unless theres a horrible problem with the drive, it should work fine, and should just display the contents of the drive as if it were in its own computer. Does the CD-Drive work? Can it boot a Live Linux? I would boot Puppy, mount the drive and the USB thing and copy the files. The last 3 data recovery jobs i did i used a USB enclosure .
I will have to SAY that if the data is important...as it usually is this is the wrong way to go.
File transfers are less reliable...the machine may or may mot recognise the device etc. etc. etc.

Do yourself a favor and use the http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/  method here...
If it's a laptop drive the procedure is the same but you will need an adapter. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 21, 2009, 03:09:57 PM

look i can't even boot into BIOS on the Dimension...and the motherboard is going out so a USB transfer is out the WINDOW...so is booting with linux.

and the Master-Slave deal wouldnt work on my NEW rig, since there isnt an extra bay..

and yes the files are important(letters, xcel SHEETS, other personal document, etc.)

but the enclosure seems to be the only way to go.

But thanks for taking your time to help though Quote from: macdad- on February 21, 2009, 05:20:40 PM

Open the case, have the drive in a plastic bag, dangling on the ribbon cable, perched on a pile of Robert Ludlum* novels. You're only doing this once.

* That is all they are good for IMHO.

Solve : Help My Coputer won't open defrag?

Wait, no, first ty the CHHKDSK and see what happens.
You will have to reboot.
Sorry ,but don't KNOW anything about computers. Can you please tell me how to do this?Restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key until menu with Safe Mode option appears.         Tried to check disk and it said can't find,so I tried BOOTING in safe mode and it still won't defrag. What does a beginner do next?Where are you accessing defrag, and chkdsk?   tried to access from control panel for the defrag, wouldn't work, then went to run and typed in chkdsk and it said can't find. Also rebooted my comp in safe mode and still not working.Even went to system tools from programs installed and tried to defrag from there, but still won't work.defrag - Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools

chkdsk - Start>Run, type in: cmd. Click OK.
At Command PROMPT, type:

When all else fails, post the "exact" message you're receiving...   Broni,I tried what you said, but received the message that the chkdsk/p/r isn't reconized as internal or external command.Evidently the defraging file is gone. What else is suggested.Even tried in search, and can't find it. Here, i searched it and found this:

First, It's called "Disk defragmenter"

Secondly, it's a shortcut to "%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc"... and you cannot run shortcuts from the command line or Run dialog, AFAIK.

As such, the real recommendation should be to run

"%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc"

EDIT: if that file doesn't exist, and your chkdsk is missing as well, try looking in
system32\dllcache of your windows folder- chkdsk.exe and defrag.exe are both present here on my PC.

For that matter- try SFC /scannow on the command line as well. remember to include the space between the slash and the command, which is likely the reason your attempt to use chkdsk also failed (no spaces) Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 17, 2009, 01:28:53 PM

Did you TRY running this at the command line? It doesn't work. I explain why, because there IS NO DEFRAG ICON or file there. It is called Disk Defragmenter, AND it's a shortcut to the Management CONSOLE Snapin. An easier method of doing so of course being to literally reference the snapin file itself, running a shortcut would require the inclusion of the LNK extension, and ADDITIONALLY the proper filename.Whatever...

Solve : Lost drivers after Gateway System Recovery?

Answer»

The other day I used the Gateway System Recovery CD to do a destructive system restore on my computer and when I was done my internet connection wouldn't work.  I did some investigating and found that several of my device drivers had gone missing.  Most of them I was able to restore using the Gateway Tech Support site but not the two I needed, the Ethernet Controller and the Network Controller.  I am lost without my internet and have no IDEA what to do next   Can anyone help me with this???  Thank you. What operating system is this?Gateway's recovery CDs include the device drivers on a CD separate from the system recovery CD.

Gateway ships their recovery software with a CD for the operating system, and others which include the drivers and other application software.

Do you have these CDs?

If not, provide us with the serial number of your Gateway (along with the operating system Zylstra requested) and we should be able to locate the drivers you need from Gateway. My OS is Windows XP.  As far as I know I don't have a separate device driver CD so my serial number is N625801013518.  When I put that into Gateway's website it says that my computer is a model #3520GZ but on the bottom of my notebook it says the model #is M250X-3401842.  Hope that helps.  Thanks again. If you reside in the USA...

Use this link to use Gateway Update to find the drivers you need automatically:  Gateway Update version 3.2.0.8Thanks but it says that the update is only for computers purchased before 08/01/2004...mine is from 2005. Do you think it's ok to try it anyway or will it mess it up?Wait just found out I can't use the update program anyway because you have to be connected to the internet for it to work. Then you'll need access to a computer that has the internet available...so you can download the drivers for your computer...from Gateway Support.Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In UPPER menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include ANYTHING under the line Debug - PCI
ok so i actually was able to get my Network Controller driver installed manually and so my wireless works now (yay!).  i tried the update program though and it didn't work...i think my computer is too new.  anyway now i'm just trying to install the Ethernet Controller driver.  i'm pretty sure i got the correct driver from the gateway website but i just can't figure out how to install it.  nothing i do is working (including following the directions in the readme document).   i'll try the Everest thing...

thanks everyone!

Post download link.http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20007&uid=224452041There is a link "How to Install":

Installation

1.  The FILES EXTRACT to the C:\Cabs\D00190-001-001 folder.

2.  From the Start menu, click or tap Control Panel.

3.  In Control Panel, click or tap Performance and Maintenance.

4.  In Performance and Maintenance, click or tap the System icon.

5.  In the System Properties dialog box, click or tap the Hardware tab, and then tap Device Manager.

6.  In Device Manager, double-click or tap Other Devices, and then double-click or tap Ethernet Controller.

7.  In the Ethernet Controller Properties dialog box, tap the Driver tab, and then click or tap update driver.

8.  In the Welcome dialog box, click or tap the Install from a list or specific location box, and then click or tap Next.

9.  Click or tap Include this location in the search, and then enter the path C:\Cabs\D00190-001-001.  Click or tap Next.

10.  Click or tap Finish.
Yeah I know, I've followed that procedure and it doesn't work.  It comes back with this message: "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software".

Interestingly I got this same error message when I followed this procedure to install the Network Controller driver that I downloaded from Gateway.  So instead I went into the C:\cabs driver folder and used the included Setup Launcher to install it.  That worked fine for that driver but if I attempt to do the same for this one it installs the Broadcom utilities but Device Manager still indicates that the Ethernet Controller driver is missing. Can you post Everest report?

Solve : upgrade fromXP to VISTA "its easy"?

Answer»

I have an XPILO computer from staples that came out of the box with xp loaded on the computer but not installed. There is a sticker on the case with the operating system KEY registered on it.  On first power up you go through all the necessary steps to INSTALL the operating system.  The operating system is XP Home Media center Edition with sp2. I have had the computer for 2 yrs and cant complain, it has worked fine for me BUT. Christmass comes along and the kids get I-Pods. Two kids, two I-Pods. Now i NEED a program called "Quicktime". When I try to install Quicktime I get the message saying insufficient rights contact your system administrator.  Well I need Quicktime to be able to connect the I-Pod to the computer. No Quicktime, no songs can be downloaded to the I-Pods.  After many tries at installing Quicktime with failure as an outcome. I FIGURES there was something done at the first installation that was causing this so the easiest thing to do is to replace the operating system with VISTA.  To keep things short it didn't work and I keep getting STOP  0X0000005C in a blue screen.  I have run Registry cleaner. And thought about updating the BIOS. (there is a disaster in the making).  Now i have to keep hitting the F keys to get to a page where I can select to revert to the previous operating system. How do I reinstall XP or get rid of VISTA to get back to where I was two weeks ago.Sorry, you went down the wrong track.
Quicklime works fine on XP.
This issue is permissions on the machine.STOP 0x0000005C or HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED error is pretty rare and is likely caused by hardware or device driver issues.
In your case, I'd back up your data, and go for XP clean install: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Scroll down to the Preferences section.  It tells you how to enable your sound for Verizon's Webmail.

Verizon's Webmail is also flash-based.  Hopefully, you have the latest plugin for your browser.

You may also want to check to see if you have sounds enabled in your browser by going to Tools/Internet Options, then clicking the Advanced tab.  Scroll down to Multimedia to see if Play sounds in web pages is ticked...if not, check it...save your settings and then let us know if this worked...or not.Good catch Steve

I have WINDOWS xp.  When I FIRST got the computer I tried to install an old scanner to it.  The scanner was too old and not compatible anymore.  So since then windows alerts me at STARTUP that the device wasn't able to install correctly.  How do I get rid of this annoying problem?Check in Add/Remove programs for the scanner software...and remove it from there and re-boot...
If it's not listed there Post back and we'll have to do some more digging. If the above doesn't work...

Solve : CHKDSK hangs....?

Answer»

hello there... am back..well, not really...still here, reading posts....

anyway, here's my problem...
yesterday my computer pops up an error when I run opera stating that
C:\documents and settings\my folder\local settings\application data\opera\profile\cache4\opr01BSZ is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the CHKDSK utility.

ok, so I did a chkdsk but it hangs on step 2 at 0%. run that on all nighter but it was still stuck at 0%.
so what I did was (unfortunately) reboot my box and did it again, and again it was stuck at step 2 0%, then again I force reboot it, then cancelled the chkdsk, then run a fix intall on opera to no avail. uninstalled it, then did a fresh install but the error pops up again everytime I run opera...

with all that done, backed up all my data then tried to run chkdsk again but it still was stuck at step 2 0%.  tried googling for that error but can't find any (but a lot of chkdsk hang errors  ). I'm running windows xp home sp 3 with 512 mb ram, 160 gb hd with about half of it free.

thanks  Try deleting the Cache4 folder.ei.... broni just suggested that too...nope, can't be DELETED because of the corrupted data (i'll try that in SAFE mode)...so what i did was uninstall opera, deleted the folder in program files then renamed the opera folder in application data to something other than opera..did a fresh install then voila!..the error pop up no longer shows..

just downloaded seatoolsforwindows as suggesetd by broni...i'll run that tonight...working

thanks!Yeah, I was going to suggest that next.

Good job. deleted the corrupted data in safe mode then run the sea tools... it's working fine now...thanks  Nice was just wondering....just been lucky here because you guys are there to help and the corrupted data was pinpointed...what if windows didn't pop up a message saying what data was corrupted? chkdsk can't find nor fix this and i'll be running around in circles  ... can you suggest some other utilities in case something LIKE this happens? thanks...Unfortunately, chkdsk, like many other Windows built-in tools is not very reliable.
I case of hard drive problem, TOOL #1 is always hard disk manufacturer test tool.
Stop by any time.     should've figured that out ....thanks broni...be around...

Solve : Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Answer»

I was WONDERING if downloading Service Pack 2 is free online? I have been having problems with my Internet Explorer, and I need to upgrade but it says I need to DOWNLOAD that to be able to upgrade. Thanks.Yes its free.  Accually get sp3.  Just google for a dlJust click Start then All Programs and select WINDOWS Update.

That's the best way to get all of the updated service pack files. When I go to download the service pack it says, the expected program was not found on this computer. I'm not sure what this means.Did you go to windows update?

Did it scan your system?Yeah and it said I'm missing files on my system, so I selected to install them and nothing was installed.Post the EXACT message, you're getting. The message from when I try to install the service pack, or when I run the Windows Update? Both, but where did you get SP2 from?I don't have SP 2 on my computer, I had to re-install Windows, and when I try to upgrade, it won't let me...here's the messages

"The expected version of the product was not found on your system"-when I try to upgrade to SP3And when I try to run Windows Update, the message "The files required to run Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your system".To install SP3, you have to have at least SP1 installed.
You may start with SP2 actually, since it gives you firewall protection.Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire PAGE is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer. It makes me terminate the program after this message comes up:

"The instruction at "0x77f53111" referenced memory at "0x0065007c". The memory could not be "written".OK. So we have some more issues here.
Let's go back. What's the computer story? What's wrong with it to start with?

Solve : Dell OptiPlex GX1P?

Answer»

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX1P I bought the computer from a high school it worked great for over a year then all of a sudden I got a pop up saying running out of memory I looked through the files for junk files and programs no longer on my computer and got rid of those. It worked for a while then  the pop up came again and now the computer will just shut itself off and reboot no matter what i'm doing. I like the computer I hope I can get this fixed any suggestions? Have you cleaned the computer? Inside the case and in the OS?

To clean in the case get some canned air and a few q-tips. Unplug everything and take the case outside. Open the case, keeping your hand on the bare metal to discharge any static. Use a q-tip to hold the cooling fans and blow the case out.

To clean the OS I use CCleaner, EasyClean, CleanUp4.5.

Use EasyCleaner only if you are comfortable working inside the OS itself, IE Windows.

You can set CleanUp4.5 in options to Thorough or check all the boxes and do a CUSTOM clean. It will tell you what you are removing and how much space you are getting back. On one computer I reclaimed 82GB of space that was full of garbage, dead files and registry keys.

CCleaner is very good for cleaning as well, it CLEANS the crap files and you can also clean the registry using the same program.

Get memtest and check out your RAM, you could have a bad RAM stick.I cleaned the inside and installed a new fan to cool it off better I haven't got the problem pop up again yet but i'm still leary to log on to it because it just shuts down when it wants to. How would I go about buying more memory and installing it? Computer specs please?

Also, can you take a screenshot of the popup?  Press ALT+PrintScreen and paste to Microsoft Word, Paint, or another such program.

Save the resulting screenshot and attach it to your next reply.Okay i'm on the Dell now I dunno how to add the pic I took so here is the info on my system.....
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Computer:
Intel Pentium III Processor
497 MHz
398 MB RAM

Is that the info you needed? Hard drive size/free space, please.Total size 19.06 GB
Free space 14.78GB
Free Space 77%You don't have much of RAM. Processor rather slow....
What kind of programs give you "out of memory" error?

As for shutting down...

1. Disable "Restart on error" feature...

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

You may see some error message. If so, post back what it SAYS.

2. Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

When I get a hand-me-down computer the first thing I do is wipe it out.

Do you have the operating system disk and/or the product key?To see about adding more ram to your system you can follow the below link and install / run the SCANNER and it should tell you how much and what kind of ram is currently in your system. Then it will tell you the max you can use and give you some prices.

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

Keep in mind that you don't have to buy the ram from crucial you can always write down the info and see if you can find it cheaper elswhere.I went to crucial cause that's what I have now is crucial 128 I wanna upgrade to 256 but they don't service this pc anymore. I found a site that has memory in stock but I don't know what to get they got a list that says memory speed PC100 or PC133 how do I know which one is mine? Here is the site

 http://www.memory-up.com/Memory/DellOptiPlex11030.html?utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=cpc&OVRAW=dell%20optiplex%20gx1p%20memory%20256&OVKEY=dell%20optiplex%20gx1p%20memory&OVMTC=advanced&OVADID=16538044511&OVKWID=127035755011

Any ideas how to find out what I need?Since it is a Dell it should have a Service Tag on it some where. If you find this you can enter it on Dell's website and should be able to get all the original details of that comp. So as long as the hardware is still original you should have all the info you need on your ram.Crucial should have been able to give you the proper RAM specs...you don't have to buy theirs but it will tell you what type to buy...

Solve : Networking Vista and XP?

Answer»

There are two desktops, wired Vista and wireless XP. The workgroups are the same, the accounts are the same, both have good internet connections, I have shared the folders I want on the Vista machine and ALLOWED everyone full access, the type of network is private, I downloaded that mapping patch on the XP machine so it can be seen in the networking window on the Vista machine, I can ping the XP from the Vista, I can ping the Vista from the XP, all access tries were done from accounts in the administrative group.

problems
1. I can only see the Vista machine sporadically from XP.
2. When I do see it I can not access it.
3. I can not see the XP from the Vista.

What did I miss or do wrong and how can I get them to see each other consistently?

Both MACHINES in the same Workgroup ? ?
This often gets overlooked...Yeah, both in the same workgroups, file and printer sharing enabled too. Best bet is to START over and re-create the Network under another Network name...In Vista, if I share a folder on C: do I have to share C:? I know sharing in XP WORKS with just sharing the folder (plus all the other STUFF).Besides "do it again", are there any other answers to this problem? And the question about sharing?

Solve : Windows XP won't shutdown?

Answer»

My notebook will not shutdwon as through the START menu. OS is XP Home, it will shutdown by holding the start up button. Any clues to overcome this? When did this start?

Try PERFORMING a System Restore to a few days before the problem started.Sometimes I have the same problem but I believe it to be CAUSED by a program that won't allow me to shut down until it closes but I don't KNOW what program it is. Here's what I do

Ctrl+Alt+Del

Select "Shut Down" Then select "Turn Off". For some REASON, this method seems to force it to shut down immediately for me. Give it a try. It's a temporary band-aid.

Solve : Recovering files after System Recovery?

Answer»

I had to do a full system recovery as described here:

"Full System Restore (with Backup) Using Gateway System Recovery Windows XP Recovery CD

This option moves all hard disk contents to the "C:\My Backup" DIRECTORY and installs a NEW copy of Windows®. This option preserves your existing data files, however all applications and settings will need to be reinstalled. This option requires a minimum 4 GB of free hard disk space for the new INSTALLATION of Windows."

Now I'm wondering how to restore the BACKED up files.  I'm able to go to the "C:\" drive and FIND the "My Backup" folder but not sure what to do next.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.Try This...

Solve : XP Home Install Not!!?

Answer»

Hi,
I am trying to install WIN XP Home on my computer. Without success.
The disk was purchased from a well known auction site within the UK (Where I live). I was assured it was genuine and came with the pc the seller had. It was wrapped sealed and has the holograms, so I don't think that is the problem.

The computer is:
Packard Bell I Media 3054
Serial No. 037535620383
Model Type: REF: ALT - COL 2
                           PID: 03753586

HDD 80Gb
INTEL Celeron D32S
BIOS: Award Software International INC
512 RAM

The disk I am trying to install from is:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Includes Service pack 1a.

I have installed XP Pro before on another computer without problems and went through the same procedure. Let the CD format the HDD. Then, when it starts installing files the problems started. There were a lot of files (Listed below) that it could not install. I tried six or more times hitting "Enter" for them, but only about three (not on the list) installed. So I was LEFT with no option but to hit ESC and omit the files.
On completion and restarting I got:
"File rtfs.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) at line 502S in d.\xpsp1\base\boot\sdetup\setupc"

I tried "Repair" but it WOULD not run. (How do you get it to do that? it would only let me type one LETTER  and I tried "C" for the HDD and "D" for CD, but no joy.)

I went through the reinstall three times with the same result. I am going wrong somewhere, or do I need to contact the seller for a refund please?

Files missin:
"Setup cannot copy the file"
atmfd.dll
driver.cab
dx8vb.dll
gm.dls
mswdat10.dll

Thanks for any advice. When you bought the computer, it didn't have any OS on it?

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool. One other thing that needs to be clarified...

Did you just buy the software, or the PC and the software together?

If you just bought the software...and not the PC, you'll have to remember that the software is proprietary for that computer only....and cannot be redistributed as "stand alone" software.  Software packaged with another computer is solely for that computer and is OEM software.

If this auction house sold you this software without any hardware...then they may be breaking the law.  At least, from what I understand about the law in the US...not the UK.

If you want to install Windows XP on your own computer...you may want to purchase a legal retail version of the software for installing on your own PC.

For hard drive diagnostics...Maxtor's PowerMax software should be able to be used on most brands of hard drives.  Another would be Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test. Thanks for the info. I am working though it and will report back.
I purchased the computer as a spare in case of problems with my main one. It came from a boot fair (Yeah I know, "bad idea"). On start up I found it had basic WIN XP Pro. Tried to install service pack 1a and it came up with illegal system so can't install notice. I thought the easy option was to purchase a legal disk (Genuine ones, not copies, are legal over here to resell.) and install it. Computer shop disk about £90, auction price, £30, and being terminally skint I went for the auction one. Still I have LEARNT something. I did not realise that the OS Disk was machine specific. (EXPENSIVE lesson!)
As said, I will report back after working through the info. Thanks for the advice.Dimness must be upon me. Honest I have not touched the Southern Comfort! But I am getting no where!
I tried downloading the 1st diagnostic tool, but it says "Does not support ATA" which, according to PC Wizard, mine is. (Seagate).
Powermax does not give an option (That I can see) of creating a CD, and the computer with problems does not have a F/D drive. I am going to download it on another computer and see if I can transfer it from F/D to CD?
Anything else I can try please?
I have looked carefully at the WIN Home CD packaging, but there is nothing on it to say it is for use with one brand of computer. Though it does have "OEM Product" on it which from what you have posted I guess is the problem.See if this software will work for you:  MaxBlast 5Thanks. I tried the link but on XP just got:

Error 404--Not Found
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
10.4.5 404 Not Found

The server has not found anything matching the Request-URI. No indication is given of whether the condition is temporary or permanent.

If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 403 (Forbidden) can be used instead. The 410 (Gone) status code SHOULD be used if the server knows, through some internally configurable mechanism, that an old resource is permanently unavailable and has no forwarding address.
Try Here...If that doesn't work...Try this link:  http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/maxtor_desktop/Howdy Glitch ! !Hey, bud! Thanks again for the replies. I have downloaded Patio's link and created a bootable media disk. But I am a bit confused about this. (Easy to confuse me. Just put me in a round tower and say, "Stand in the corner"!) The XP Home disk boots the system and starts to install, but will not install the files listed above. How do I use Maxtor to get it to install these files please?  Quote

(Easy to confuse me. Just put me in a round tower and say, "Stand in the corner"!)

The Maxtor app does not install anything...
It tests the Hard Drive for any problems/errors....

Just boot to it the same as starting up with the Windows CD in...Hi Patio,
I tried booting with the CD but all I got was:
"Boot from CD"
"Starting Maxtor Loader"

Then nothing for over 10min.
Tried another couple of times.

When making the disk I saw you can put in Start up parameters? I would have no idea what to do there so took the top option where that question was not involved . Should I have taken the lower option and put something in that when making the disk?

(And I thought installing XP Home was going to be as straight forward as WIN 3.1, WIN 95, WIN 98, WIN XP Pro!)

Solve : Fried Computer??

Answer»

About a month ago my computer went on the fritz. It will turn on, but will not start up. I cannot run it in safemode - the only thing i can get to is the diagnostics otherwise it just keeps RESTARTING itself. Any advise on what to do? I have left it off and unplugged for over a week, TRIED changing the power cord ( around the same time this started happening the electric has been shut on and off while the computer was on, which may have affected it) so I'm out of ideas. Is this a lost cause, is there anything i can do, or should i try BRINGING to a professional?
I'd LOVE to try to get this fixed on my own so all help is appreciated!

Also, if this computer is unfixable is there any way to get all my pictures/videos/ documents off of it and transferred to my laptop?I can't tell you how to fix it as I'm not that expertised, but I do know that you can buy a hard drive caddy that you slot your hard drive into and then you connect it via USB to your laptop.

You can get them from any major computer store.Okay cool, at least i can get the important stuff off. Thanks!Just buy the right type of enclosure, a EIDE won't work in a SATA enclosure, and vice versa.

Solve : Always on Top?

Answer»

So, I like to watch movies whilst I work. So I can pop a DVD in WMP and select "Player on Top" and put a teeny little viewing window in the upper right HAND corner of my screen... So I can watch and work.

Now, on this here interweb, more and more folks have put cool teevee shows online that I'd ALSO like to watch whilst working. Trouble is, the best I can do is splitscreening my windows.... Which WORKS, just not as efficient.

Is there a way to - and I'm presuming this would be in Reg Editor - to have a pop-up window (or any app, for that matter) always be on top?Check this program out:
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/DeskPins/deskpins.html

You may also want to check out the mini-wmp player. Right Click your TaskBar and go to Toolbars and click Windows Media Player.
Now play your movie and minimize WMP.

And thirdly, you may want to try VLC Media Player. It has a smaller interface, as WELL as a built-in 'always on top' function.Check out "Double Vision". It looks pretty nice. Works on web video and can be set transparent so you can see through it while its on top. Freeware ofcourse!

Right Click your TaskBar and go to Toolbars and click Windows Media Player.
Now play your movie and minimize WMP.
Right. That's what I do for DVD's, AVI's, etc. What I need is SIMILAR functionality for STREAMING video... Will check out the others and see what's cooking.

ETA: Double Vision looks brilliant... But I'm hoping I can see more than Chuck Todd on my screen! I was thinking more Lauren Graham....VLC will work for streaming video too. But you have to have the link to the video stream. Most sites encode the link so that you cannot view it though.Double Vision is cool, but would be way cooler if I could figure out how to get JUST the screen in the transparent window.

So... DeskPins it is!

Thanks folks!

rjbI've never used any of them but VLC. I am a freeware fanatic so I'm always up on programs

Solve : System freezes?

Hi Guys,

This problem is now happening constantly.  A few MINUTES after the system boots up it totally freezes.

No I/O

Any idea on how to solve this problem?

Thank you - as always.

can you boot into safe mode? Can you download Speedfan and we'll check your temps....is your housekeeping good...ie...dust ,etc

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.phpI LIVE in Buffalo so temp is not a problem, but you are right about the dust.

Further info - it will not reboot when frozen, it requires a shutdown first.

Also it sometimes freezes during the bootup process.  I'll spray out the insides and see what happens.

Sprayed it.  Now the system won't boot at all.  I didn't touch anything inside, just sprayed.Where you live is not so much the issue......high temperature readings would indicate overheating of the CPU..... the  layers of dust on the fans, heatsink, etc. act as an insulator and the cpus' temperature will rise......most modern motherboards or processors have a builtin shutdown so damage is avoided....this may be the cause of your problems......check all your connections, make sure you didn't accidently disconnect a cable or a HEADER connection(little wires from the front panel to the MB) ........Are you getting any lights, video, fans running......?I was kidding about the city...a little humor to lighten things up a bit.

I'll check it out...be sure the CPU fan is running, etc.The CPU fan runs, the lights go on, but there is no "BEEP" and no bootup process. Quote from: bullwinkle on July 01, 2009, 11:59:09 AM

This problem is now happening constantly.  A few minutes after the system boots up it totally freezes.

Does the computer post?
Do you mean that you log into Windows and then it freezes? What you have quoted was the situation before I blew air into the system.

Now it gives me lights and fans but no beep.  It does not post, there is no display on the monitor.Does it give you the option to go into the BIOS?No, there is no display whatsoever.  There is no signal going to the monitor.  And yes, I have checked the monitor cable.

No sound at all.Any other ideas?  Thoughts?  Should I clear CMOS for example?

Anything?Reseat  your video cards...reseat your ram......confirm that the heatsink is seated flush on the MBDone - same result.

I don't know how blowing air can do this, but I do recall that one time blowing air fixed a problem.  I guess this is a very sensitive system.

From what I know of PCs the BIOS is hardwired into the mb.  Obviously it is not being activated.  All I hear after startup is a couple of clicks and then nothing.

? is, what disconnection would not even cause the BIOS to run?   To get no speaker check whatsoever?Clicks can indicate an impending HDD failure...
DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...
Follow the info on creating a bootable CD.

Windows does not need to be functioning to do this...
Post back with the results.

PS: Run the long test...

Solve : Need help writing a script - Active Directory, OU, Groups?

Answer»

Here's the deal. My corporation creates new users through payroll with a Meta ID which automatically creates an AD account, AS/400 account, and some other things. Apparently there's currently no way to automatically asign newly created users to the "Everyone" group in AD. I was TOLD that I COULD write a script that adds all the user objects in the User OU to a specific group, then just run that script whenever I wanted. Only problem is, I have no clue how to write this script. Any help WOULD be appretiated. Are you trying to do this outside of the scope of your companies IT department? No, I have full control over our facility's OU.Well nevermind I guess.... SOMETIMES I think too much. Apparently all I needed to do was select all users, right click, and add to group...

Solve : system lagging, need help?

Answer» IM running xp, have intel core 2 quad q9400, 423 gig of free space on hard drive, 3.25 gig of ram.....when im on internet and have multiple windows open system slows down......even lows down with a couple windows open and not even on the internet but more noticable when on the web....sometimes the performance window in task manager will show anywhere from 60 - 88% across all 4 processors......
i'm not sure what is going on, does anyone have INFO?
thanksI would run malwarebytes, ad-aware, or spybot s&d to check and see if you've got any adware/spyware running in the background.

You shouldn't be having issues with the specs you've got, to be honest.

My other thought is the websites you're visiting.  If you're on a website that's running a script of some sort that's hanging, it could bring your system to a halt like that.  What browser are you using?  Also, is it usually the same site(s) that cause it to slow down so much?thanks for the REPLY....
it is all different sites...at times i can have multiple windows open, and that is the reason why i have a good processor with enough ram so i wouldnt have this problem.....i do have zone alarm running but i will try the malware programs you mentioned.........yeah, zonealarm is meant more as a firewall and less as an antivirus/spyware solution.

Try the tools I recommended and let me know how it turns out.by the way, im also running avast......
i downloaded spybot and RAN and it said i had a few infected files and a lot of tracking files....but to get rid of them i had to buy the program so i didnt do it...then i downloaed malwarebytes and it said i had nothing bad.....i will try ad-aware next
You probably don't NEED all 3.  I usually just use malwarebytes and spybot s&d (if you download the free one it won't prompt you to purchase it).i know, i dont need all...but it prompted me for payment....ran adaware and it said i just had some tracking cookies....so far no improvementactually i am running a lot better now.......thanks a bunch socrates    no problem

Solve : Host File Problems?

Answer»

Windows xp SP3, IE7, Spyware Doctor.
Not really a virus question, but more about the HOST FILE itself.
Only just recently, when l run spyware doctor, it is picking up between 700-800 infections in the host file. I checked this file and made sure all entries had the 127.0.0.1 prefix, logged on to a very trusted website, and when l looked at the host file again, there were about a dozen new entries. I'll probably do this for some of my other bookmarked websites to try and find out the culprit.
When it contains some "dodgy" entries LIKE those PICKED up by the antivirus, are they in fact dangerous to have in there?
Is the host file even an essential to have?
Comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Download HostsXpert ( http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html ) and then follow the steps below:

    * Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    * It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    * Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    * click Restore MS Hosts File and then click OK.
    * Click the X to exit the program

Restart computer.I use majorgeeks quite a lot and hey, what a nifty little program!
Did what you said and now have a nice clean hosts file.
The program makes it a lot easier to check entries.
Thanks very much for that, kpac.No problem. Safe computing. Quote from: willythecat on February 19, 2009, 03:10:01 AM

Is the host file even an essential to have?

I believe it's essential.  It's used by such spyware tools a Spybot Search & Destroy's Immunize feature to insert undesirable websites so that they are blocked. Quote from: willythecat on February 19, 2009, 03:10:01 AM

What, exactly, do you mean by "infections in the host file"?  If "all entries had the 127.0.0.1 prefix", then how are they infections?  Quote from: soybean on February 19, 2009, 07:45:18 AM
What, exactly, do you mean by "infections in the host file"?  If "all entries had the 127.0.0.1 prefix", then how are they infections?

If they block you from updating your antivirus, maybe. Or from downloading a well known anti spyware or adware app.

Malware programs often add entries to the hosts file. One reason is to divert the user to sites that the spyware author or deployer wants. Another reason is to divert certain domain lookups to localhost, to prevent the user and/or software apps from REACHING certain web sites, for example in order to obtain new, or update current, antivirus software. Such entries could well be described as "infection". This is why anti malware software apps such as Spybot Search And Destroy often use their own Hosts files.

Solve : Fast User Switching in Windows XP Home?

Answer»

I use a laptop with WIN XP Home SP3.  I am the only user.  I turned off fast user switching 2 years ago since I was the only user, however, today I thought to better secure my system I would create another account and make it the admin account.  I then made my account the limited user account.  BIG MISTAKE.  Since I turned off fast user switching I can not switch users from my limited user account to my admin account.  Now I can't sign on to the admin account to make changes to the computer.  How do I turn fast user switching back on from a limited account (I know it says you can't do it but is there anyway I can do it?)  I NEED to do this so I can switch to my new admin account to make changes.  PLEASE SOMEONE HELP.   Have you restarted the computer yet?Yes I have.  But with fast user switching off, when I press start and select log off of course I won't have the option to switch users since I turned it off 2 years ago so it just logs me off to my limited account sign on.  I know I should have turned FUS back on before I did this but I had forgotten I had turned it off, duh.  Have you completely turned the computer off and then turned it back on?Yes, I have completely shut it down and then powered back on.  Does anyone know how to turn "fast user switching back on with a limited account"?  Thanks Try starting back up and pressing the F8 key repeatedly as the computer boots. This will take you the advanced start up menu. CHOOSE Safe Mode. Now you should be able to access the admin account. Thanks JJ3000.  I finally got my fast user switching (FUS) started again.  I went to control panel, admin services, then services.  I then went to the FUS service, then advanced, then to accounts which are available to use the service.  Then I was able to sign into my admin account from there.  I appreciate your help.  Its FOLKS like you that make these forums viable.  Peace my Brother.

Solve : disk cleanup crash?

Answer»

I've recently been unable to run Windows Disk Cleanup.  The machine shuts off after about 1 minute.  I've done an error check.  The machine otherwise runs OK.  Windows XP, Gateway laptop.  Any ideas where to turn.  LennyagThis can be caused by not enough free space...how much is on that drive ? ?
Capacity and free space ? ?40 G drive with only 1.9 G Free Quote from: lennyag on February 18, 2009, 06:39:15 AM

40 G drive with only 1.9 G Free
That may well be the cause of the problem.  Windows needs more breathing ROOM to even run TASKS such as Disk Cleanup.  Can you move some files, at least TEMPORARILY, to a flash drive or burn them to a CD/DVD and remove them from your hard drive so that you can then run Disk Cleanup?  If you can not do this, then you need to be thinking about getting a bigger hard drive.

By the way, does your Recycle Bin have files in it?  If so, emptying it might alleviate the immediate problem of not being able to run Disk Cleanup. The general rule of thumb for Windows is 15% Free Space...

For a 40G drive that equals 6G...
You shouldn't GO below that...or performance suffers.

Solve : Font size on most IE sites?

I posted this problem some time ago so hope this is not a DOUBLE post.  Not sure why it is not showing - must have done something wrong?

Problem is  I cannot GET most all IE  sites to be readable.  The Font is so small  I can't read it.

Have tried changing on IE but to no avail.  Have tried Firefox.  Somewhat better but still there are sites unreadable.

Now have started an online class and it will be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to keep up trying to read such tiny letters.  Can help?  Getting  desperate as class begins very soon.Does it seem that the letters are tiny in just the web browsers, or on your whole computer?  What is your screen res. SET at?This is my second posting  and lest it be considered double posting (could not find my original post and thought people had not seen it) will cancel this and stay with original thread.

In answer to question - no font on my PC works quite well.

Will have to check my resolution but it has never changed.

Please respond on other posting.

Solve : Windows hangs -safe mode options do not work --?

Answer»

So after (4) years with apparently too much time on my hands, I decide to update some 35-40 drivers -- thinking maybe, response time will improve.  I go to the Sony site and down load all the recommended drivers for my machine.  VGC-RA940G

Following directions, I pretty much restart after each download.  The last driver I download, I restart and to my shere surprise, the machine doesnt!  (Restart, that is.)

It hangs -- the Windows screen appears and thats it --- 5, 10, 30 minutes later its still there. So I restart, (Saying to myself, I can handle this.) I press f5 and get the safe mode screen.

I choose evey option available, and each one hangs; "Safe mode," "safe mode with networking" and "command prompt' scroll a screen of files then hangs right after the ____*.mup file.

"Last known configuration" brings me back to a hanging Windows screen as does "start windows normally."

At this point I am getting a bit panicy.  Although I have an external hard drive, none of my data is backed up. (thump on the head) I start hitting any function key that wont give me the insideous safe mode screen and f10 gives me a "restore" with a warning telling me that all my #$%^ data will go away if I continue. (I am paraphrasing, as you may have guessed.) so I quietly and promplty exit that screen.

I call Sony technical support (and begrudgingly pay my 29.99) and, what do you know, after doing eveything I just did, she announces she cant help me -- (surprise, surprise.) So after dealing with customer service. defending and demanding ...well thats a different story, back to my real problem.

I do not know what to do next short of bringing the unit down to the Geek Squad and having them extract all the data from my machine and doing a clean install myself.

I BELIEVE I have enough computer knowledge to at least get my data off the drive and on to my external.

Of course, I cant find my original Windows disk.  So I ended up purchasing the Recovery disks for 17.95 from Sony -which includes Windows.  I wont be receiving these for another 5 days.  - I refused to pay 12.00 for expedited shipping. --

I would appreciate so much if one of you computer savvy PEOPLE out there can give my some tips -- or what do they call it today? -- the down low () on how to handle this problem on my own.  I truly need to get this data back, all of it , if possible.

Thanks, B
You didn't need to buy the recovery disk. When you press F10 at boot up, you access your recovery partition, which will restore your computer back to factory settings. That's what all of that-You will loose all of your #&^$ data- was about.

You can place your hard drive in another computer in the slave position and recover all of your data. Then you can just put the drive back into your machine and press F10 at boot up to revert back to factory settings. That will format your hard drive and give you a new start.

If you have an IDE hard drive you will want to give this tutorial a look.
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/Thanks for replying JJ

I realized today when I received the recovery disks, I didnt need them. and I am delberating on whether to do this or not - remove the hard drive and hook to another computer.

The only other computer I have is a dell laptop from work.  I also have a lacie external hard drive attached to the sick computer. I went to the link you included in your reply, but I it did not give instructions for a laptop configuration, so like I said, I am a bit nervous about doing this.

The more i think about it however, it kinda sounds easy enough  -- the drive with my files on it acts like an external hard drive yet the computer I hook it to sees it as a slave and not the master??

But I would need more thorough directions. Can you direct me to another link.  I would appreciate it. I called best buy today and they want $99 for 10 gigs of backup and $159 over that.

Thanks again. Did you try to boot up with the external hard drive unplugged?

Now that you have the recovery disks you can access the recovery console. Lets try doing a recovery before you take out your hard drive.

If you haven't unplugged the external, do it now.
Boot to the CD and follow the instructions here
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmTop of the morning to you J

No I did not try to boot with the external hard drive unplugged.  I dont understand how that would help??  I only have data files on that drive.

So I read the article and I will take the plunge.  But not until later on this evening when I can devote my full attention.   I know you cant assure me of anything. (That wouldnt be fair to you.) But according to this article, I shouldnt lose any of my documents, pics, websites, etc.??

another question:  On the second page of the article,
http://webcast.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=8658-1

after the first direction, before the 'section addendum note.' there  is a colon that appears with no text underneath it.  Is this deliberate?  Or are the directions in the following section.

These are the directions I should follow to recover, correct? Not sure what type of machine would have 35 or 40 drivers...Unplugging the external will cause you computer a lot less confusion. It may even boot up with the external hard drive unplugged. Before you attempt the repair, unplug the external, and see if that lets you get into Windows. In fact, unplug all of the unnecessary devices from your computer - like your printer or any other USB devices.

These are the directions you should follow to recover:
Quote

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the SYSTEM BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.  do not choose "To repair a
Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press  R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press  R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read  Warning#2!
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.  Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

If that doesn't work, there are a few more options in the recovery console that you can try.Hey J,

Just so we understand.  I do not have my original XP CD.  I did receive the recovery CD from Sony - We already discussed that. -- I am assuming that is what your were referring to....yes?

I can borrow a Windows CD from someone if that is what I need.

Just want to make sure before I dive in.

Thanks for all your help btw.

BJ...where are you when I need you??

I am using the recovery disks that came with Sony.  The screen in front of me says: Reconfigure RAID and gives me 3 choices:

Restore C: Drive - This option deletes all files on the C: drive and retores the drive back to the original factory condition

Restore complete system- Use a set of recovery discs to return the entire computer to its original factory condition. This option deletes all files on the hard disk drive.  Use this option when the main hard disk is replaced after changing a a RAID drive array, or to remove or restore the recover dirve partitition on the main hard disk drive.

Reconfigure RAID-change or remove a RAID drive array.  This option may be need when you add or remove a hard disk from a RAID array.

No idea what to do.

I remember when I was downloading drivers a week ago, I installed an Intel® RAID Driver. Not sure why I did. I thought it was being recommended at the time, so I downloaded it.

I am exiting cause I really dont know what to do at this point.  Can we meet on a chat basis?  I see this site has a chat feature.

PS- you didnt answer my last post about the original XP CD.  I dont have it, but I can borrow someones.  Is that what I should do?

PSS-I hope you did not give up on me Quote from: MassArtMom on January 25, 2009, 06:59:33 PM

That would be the easiest route to go.
It has to be the same version eg.. home, pro, media center etc.

If you still want to do the repair the borrowed disk will have all of the files that you need.

You can place your hard drive in another computer in the slave position and recover all of your data. Then you can just put the drive back into your machine and press F10 at boot up to revert back to factory settings. That will format your hard drive and give you a new start.

If you have an IDE hard drive you will want to give this tutorial a look.
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/

If I were in your shoes that would be what I would've done. I work on computer hardware all of the time and  know my way around inside a computer case. However, you might not feel as comfortable doing this as I would.

You should start backing up all of your important data to the external drive. That will save you from having to do this in the future.

Whichever path you choose to take, post back and let us know how it worked out.

Thanks J. You can bet I will back up all my data from now on.  I will take my hard drive out and try and recover what I can.  I will post back and let you know how it goes. Thanks again. J

I took the computer to work and gave it to one of the tech guys...things don't look good presently in regard to saving my data I am sad to say....this makes me very anxious, to say the least.

It seems this RAID thing did more damage then either one of us first imagined.  I cant begin to tell you what it did, but my interpretation of the tech's response was that it split the data on two drives (one virtual?) and it looks as if one drive failed or at least that's what it is saying, but like I said this is my interpretation of what he said.  It may be somewhat incorrect.

We do agree that it is highly unlikely a drive failed. It is too much of a coincidence that once the RAID driver was downloaded, the computer crashed.  Hence, they are directly related.

It may be he is not experienced with this type of problem and thought with the resources at work, it would be a piece of cake RETRIEVING the data...this doesn't seem to be the case, presently.

I did find my original Windows disk, so that's good.  However, I am not sure it will help at this point. I am fearful about not retrieving my data.....there is so much!  Any suggestions I can get would be very helpful.

I think I will get my computer back and start from square one again.  Since I found my Windows disk, I will try the steps you sent me last week.  If that doesnt work I will attempt the slave suggestion everyone seems to be giving me.  Just wanted to keep you up to date...If you think of anything else, please let me know.

Slave Drive Tutorial

I would try this first if you want to retrieve your data...****Update****

Sent the drives (never realized there were 2) to DataRecoveryNewYork.com.  Just received a quote of $1800 to recover the data.  So after I freaked out, I told him to send it back.   He told me he would rework the quote and get back to me.

I am bringing it back to work.  Tech admin said they would take a look....I will let you know...

Would have been ALOT cheaper to click my link above...

Solve : Custom Built PC shuts down during Games or after a good while.?

Answer»

Hey there guys, ill get right into it. I recently bought a few pieces of hardware to build a custom computer.
The specs are:

Motherboard: EVGA Nforce 750i SLI FTW supporting socket 775.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 Bx 2.66 [email protected] 4MB cache.
Video Card: EVGA Geforce GTX 280 1gb DDR3.
Power Supply:  Apevia 680W Iceberg Power ATX 12V complaint, sli ready.
Memory: 4 sticks of Corsair XMS2 2GB ddr2 pc 8500 1066MHz. (my motherboard supports a total of 8 GB)
Harddrive: My old hardrive, MAxtor I believe of about 80 gb of space (yes pretty low).
Case: HAF 932 Cooler Master Full tower chassis.
OS: Windows XP 64x.

Haven't overclocked anything, grounded myself and made sure to be extra careful with the hardware while installing. Have new, clean case and my system boots up fine and will be on for a while. It is when I begin to play video games such as perhaps Race car GRID, CoA or WoW that my computer will randomly shutdown. Something to note, when installing, I transferred my old Hard drive from my PREVIOUS custom built PC, I did not reinstall a clean version of windows, jsut stuck with what I had. The OS booted up and I used the CD to CHANGE up a few things like the ethernet drivers, that's about it. With that in mind, WOULD anyone have any idea of why my system seems to be shutting down on me? It's pretty obvious it may be an overheating problem, but ive even tried using a huge fan I have in my room to see if it would provide efficient cooling, just wouldnt do it.

If anyone has any tips or ideas let me know, and ask any other questions if I didnt cover everything.

Edit, here's a screenshot of SpeedFan info

What are the temperatures like when you're actually playing games?

I can't clearly see your SpeedFan reading, what does System say? 96C? That is a bit hot, especially since you just seem to be at the desktop and doing nothing in particular that would cause much system strain.

Did you remember to apply thermal paste to the CPU before putting the fan on?

Also, with your case fans, make sure they're blowing the right way. The ones the in front and side should be pulling air into the case and the one(s) at the back should be blowing air out. If they aren't, unscrew them and flip them around so they do this, as it helps to circulate air better by creating a current through the case. If this is the case I'm thinking of, it should also have a fan in top (?). Not sure which way it would best serve blowing. Out?

If none of that helps, you might consider a liquid cooling system to HELP dissipate some of that heat. Again, if memory serves me right, I think that case is designed to easily have one fitted.Yea 96, and jeex, i just realized i did forget to apply thermal paste to teh cpu before putting it on. For some reason at the time I thought it already came with some lached on, but it just slipped my mind. How much should I put when I go buy some? How much area to be covered?

As for the case, My CPU is in the lower part, the side panel and front of desktop have a large fan blowing air in, the top one, and the one behind the desktop are both blowing air out. Quote from: xmorbidartx on June 21, 2009, 11:59:44 PM

Generally, put a pea-sized amount right in the center. Don't spread it out, as when you lock the CPU fan down, the pressure will cause it to flatten out more or less smooth and even.

Check in the BIOS and see what your temperatures say too, just to make sure that system reading isn't off. Will do, I dont understand why they don't give any thermal paste when buying Processors, it's 11 at night and i'd like to get that done right now but nothing's open. I hope that's the case. Aside from all this tho, is there any other possible explanations for what may be the cause?Well, I think that's definitely the cause. Thermal paste will make a huge difference in dissipating heat from the CPU. As for the motherboard temperature, got me. 96C when it's mostly just sitting there is high beyond reason. That's why I wondered if either it was a bad reading. Quote from: quaxo on June 22, 2009, 12:25:07 AM

Fair enough, ill try to get some later tomorrow. Another question, you think my CPU may have suffered any damage or durability for not having done this? It's been about 2 days that i've used it, and only a few hours really.Probably not enough to notice, if at all. I'd quit playing games until the temperature thing is resolved though.I'll look at this more later, there was talk of a transfered drive.xmorbidartx,
 Check this out:
 http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm

Are you sure that all of your standoffs are in place? Are all of your fans blowing in the right direction? Are all of your power cords connected properly?

Also, you will get a lot better performance out of your machine if you do a clean install of the operating system. Do you have the windows disk?Yea, I just bought the  As Arctic Silver 5, added about a pea size amount to the center of the CPU, placed the heatsink + fan on top and hoped it spread the material around decently, at the moment Speedfna reports my system temperature is 90C, down from 97C from yesturday, but also gotta consider I just turned it on. I'll do a clean boot of windows right now, just to say "well I tried that too" I'll be back guys, I appreciate the support.

As for the fans they are blowing the correct direction, by stnadoffs, you mean the pins that the heatsink/fan have? I actually had a bit of a difficult time placing those things together, they just wouldnt ALL go in >.<. Quote

Another question, you think my CPU may have suffered any damage or durability for not having done this? It's been about 2 days that i've used it, and only a few hours really.
Definitively no damage.  First, excessive temperature only causes timing changes so large that some internal functions don't 'time' correctly.  Therefore the CPU only crashes.

Second, Intel CPUs (even in the 80486) contained protection circuits so that a CPU without any heatsink would not be damaged.

THIRD, destructive temperatures are extremely higher than temperatures that only change timing.

Fourth, a properly machined heatsink without thermal compound should provide sufficient cooling especially in a room of 70 degree F.  The lowest thermal resistance is a contact directly between CPU and heatsink - only two media changes.   Thermal compound is less conductive - more media.  Thermal compound is only to fill those fewer air holes so that heat transfer through an insulator (from CPU to air pocket to heatsink) has less thermal resistance (CPU to thermal compound to heatsink).  That is why so little thermal compound is required and so little remains where most all heat gets transfered.

What is the degree C per watt number for that heatsink?  If the manufacturer does not provide it, well appreciate why he made a heatsink that needs thermal compound.

We use thermal compound to reduce CPU temperatures by single digit degrees.  If thermal compound results in lower CPU temperatures, then why is that heatsink surface so poorly machined.  (BTW, a perfectly flat surface is improper machining.)
I think you need better airflow in your PC.dunno if this will help but i had the same thing happen to my custom beast it only happened while gaming. it was my graphics card try changing that i dunno if that will help with the heat but might with the crashing

Solve : Icons messed up in registry?

Answer»

Currently, my Icons are messed up in the registry. It's been like this for awhile, but I gave up trying to figure it out.

Now, it's bothering me. Alot.
The icons do no show as icons, they show as a geberic windows image viewer icon. Well, thats not true. SOME icon files show up as icons, others show up as generic. Why some and not others. I don't know.

I know its messed up in atleast two places;

My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico

-and-

My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Icofile

possibly**

My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ico_auto_file

aswell.

I'm not sure what I should export/screenshot, so please let me know what information you need and I will try to provide it.

Thanks for any help,
Image
Download TweakUI: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx (right side column), install it, at the bottom you have the option "REPAIR", chose repair icons (reboot)I don't think tweakui will recreate the proper entries in .ico and icofile... rather it deletes and rebuilds the shelliconcache.

basically- just make sure the "icofile" key is something like this:

You may be right. You're BC_Programmer I originally thought it was a problem with all icons, but they are having problems with actual ICO files showing their contents as their icon- rather he's getting the default windows icon.

chances are the DefaultIcon key in the iconfile key either doesn't exist or the value isn't valid or something.

Gotch'ya. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 08, 2009, 09:17:50 PM

partially true.

I'm going to be straight forward. I mess around in the registry. Alot.

Too much ACTUALLY.. I tried giving everything a custom icon (All the icons on my start bar are custom ^^)

Now here's the odd PART: Some Icons DO show their content, while others do not.
I am not sure what the determining factor is, but the reason it's displaying the default windows Icon is because I tried making .ICO open with windows explorer.. heh, worth a shot?

I know something is messed up.. is there anyway to tell what.. or.. Im not sure how to procede.

***I apologize for not replying sooner. I was not in a position in which I was able to access a computer.

EDIT- BC,  the icofile key matches yours.

(By the way, lovin the royal nior theme.. its a shame more people do not know about it)I've thought about it, and thought of something that might work.

First, Delete .ico, icofile, and ico_auto_file (which I don't have on my installation)... export them first to be on the safe side, then import the attached REG file(rename it to a reg, as opposed to txt, file), which essential RESETS them to the defaults.

Then, you'll need to rebuild your icon cache, using the methods described previously (tweakUI).

This is actually the possible cause for seeing some icons- the ICO files you can see are already in the shelliconcache, and the broken ones aren't.

I assume you gave up associating ICO with a program that couldn't open it anyway?

Too much actually..

I SAW this coming and it's best to come clean here to solve issues...we're not a classroom and you won't get scolded or have to stay after school...

Since you do this alot you need the right tools in case you run amuck as you have.
DLoad and install ERUNT and learn how to make proper backups of the Registry.

NOTE: This isn't meant to give you a false sense of security to the point you wind up with a machine that won't boot but it's the best backup tool for the reg.

Solve : Computer reboots during the night every night?

Answer»

For the last 2 weeks or so my computer reboots during the night. I don't see the BSOD it just reboots to my normal start screen.  When I check CCleaner I find these files:

C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP 2,046.0MB
C:\WINDOWS\MiniDump\Mini070609-01.dmp 64.00KB
C:\WINDOWS\MiniDump\Mini070709-01.dmp 64.00KB
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Logs\wbemcore.log 2.34KB
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Logs\wbemess.log 3.42KB
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Logs\wmiprov.log 1.59KB
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Logs\wbemcore.lo_ 64.07KB

I delete them and they are there the next day.

I've done a memory test and the memory passed with no faults.  I have AV and antispy SOFTWARE and run regular checks.  I haven't installed any new software/hardware recently.  I'm running Windows XP with SP3.   Apart from the reboot and the files in CCleaner the computer seems to be running fine.

Any ideas? Quote

I delete them and they are there the next day.
Don't. Those files are needed for troubleshooting.

Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
Vista users. You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.
Thanks for the reply.  Unfortunately I'm now away at work and won't be home for a week.  I'll check and post the files, if they are there, when I return. No problem You could also do this:

Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced tab -> under "Startup and Recovery" click "Settings." -> uncheck "Automatically restart."

Now you'll get an actual Blue Screen of Death.  Post what the Blue Screen says (yes, even the gibberish). How would I do that?  Would it allow me to do a print screen while in BSOD?No you can't do a print screen or anything else when the computer BSODs. The easiest way is to follow Broni's suggestion and post the dump files after a BSOD. Otherwise you'll have to use a digital camera or the low tech pen and paper approach. OK.  Back home.  Computer still doing the same, files attached.  It also will freeze now and again and the screen goes black for a second.  If you leave it the screen returns to normal and everything works.

Any ideas?

[attachment deleted by admin]Hmm, well, this would have been what  I EXPECTED; opened up and "!analyze -v" 'd it:

DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID:  GRAPHICS_DRIVER_FAULT

This would also explain your screen going black for a second issue; that is windows recovering from a serious error (eventually you get the BSOD when it is unable to).

First thing I'd try, is to update/reinstall your video card drivers.

This could also be a RAM issue, so I would recommend burning memtest86 from here to a CD and booting from it, and testing your RAM as well.

If neither of these help, it could be a hardware FAILURE with your video card. Thanks for that.

I've already run a memory test on the RAM and it came up ok.

I have a look at the video card driver and post back.

SteveOK installed the latest video card driver.  Deleted the logs.

I'll monitor and report back

ThanksProblem not fixed.  Was working away only Firefox open and the screen went black again.  Came back with the attached error message.  No memory dump files.

I've updated the video card driver - any ideas?

[attachment deleted by admin]Actually, your error was caused not by your video driver, but watchdog.sys, which is legit Windows file.
Make sure, Windows updates are current.

Solve : OS not functionally correctly ( accidentally did something T_T)?

Answer»

Ok i really really need help with this, i dunno if this is a OS problem but seems like it. I was using my computer and then i accidentally pressed the "Hibernate" button on my keyboard and so yea my computer went into hibernate mode but i pressed the button while i was loading up a game it was just CoD4. Iunno if it was it put too much pressure on my cpu or somethin which i dont think so cause it's a dual core 2.4ghz with 1.5gb ram and stuff.

But ANYWAYS, after i started back up the computer and logged back into my user and stuff, everything seemed fine at that point, but then the desktop started freezing up and i couldnt log into a game or anythin or i kinda forced logged off myself and relogged in through using the task manager and clicking "Logout user". Somehow apparently doing that messed up my computer and it restarted itself but right b4 that a blue screen flashed realquick, couldnt EVEN see what it said. After it started back up it took REALLY long to login after i entered my password and stuff for my user profile. The startup then didnt took a long time like a few minutes, finally when icons started appearing my desktop's taskbar and everything else never appeared it was just my wallpaper and icons.

Now i cant even click onthe icons to drag them around at all and when i look into the processes of my task manager, it looks like alot of the SV_ghost processes and stuff were missing. I tried doing a system restore but apparently i couldnt cause i cant even access the startup menu. My search wont work either, all that pops up is that yellow microsoft dog but like nothing else, no where to type anything. The help center wont work when i press it in my control panel, the User button in the control panel has nothin in it when i open it. Seems like alot of processes got messed up when i did that logout thing. Ive never seen this problem happen b4 so if anyone has any experience on how to fix this please share it. I cant even open up any of the outside programs that ive downloaded or even internet explorer (using another computer atm)

If you have your windows cd/dvd, I would recommend booting off of that and running chkdsk.  This will often solve problems with the OS.Good advice.
I'd also go to Control Panel/System/Advanced and turn off/uncheck "auto re-start on errors"...this will then produce the BSOD next time.
Write down the error message INCLUDING the gibberish and post it here...
The info will provide CLUES as to what is happening.
You can also do this: Start/Run type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...again have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it...
Let it run to completion...remove the CD and re-boot.also very good advice  ok i started that up and all but i dont know what to do next. Im in the command PROMPT for the system restore using the windows CD but dont know what to do next. It had me choose the C directory so i did andthen entered my admin pass but now it's at C:/Windows> what do i do next?ok i managed to do a system restore to a point a few days ago but stilldoesnt work. everything is loading slowly and many things are unusable still. and still not taskbar and alot of the functions like dragging icons and accessing programs are all still messed up At the  C:/Windows> prompt type in cd\ and press enter. Solve : Something Running??

Answer»

I'm BACK! My FRIENDS computer has something RUNNING all the time, slowing it down bad. I checked the processes, dosen't seem to be anything WRONG there. Any Ideas? Also the CD Drive keeps opening by itself. It's malware. Without a HJT log or something more concrete then heresay there isn't much more to suggest.Tell your friend to download this and run a FULL system scan. Once it found the malware, click on Remove Selected and select all the threats.
