Solve : What is SQL ???

Answer»

Greetings,

I have an MSSQL icon on my TASKBAR and WONDER what it does and is it necessary?  I tried looking it up but was dazzled by the jargon and still don't know in plain english what it is for.  Can anyone enlighten me on its purpose or necessity?

Many THANKS (for now and all the excellent past help/advice I have received)

SampDatabases. You or someone has recently installed a program or component that needs the use of SQL.  For example, programs developed with current Microsoft Visual Studio tools.

There are various products with the SQL in the name. One would  expect them all to have something in common. Not exactly true.

Example, here is a very simple definition for SQL Windows
http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=SQL+Windows&i=51912,00.asp

Don't dare ask what I think of it.

Visual Studio 2005/2008 don't require SQL of any sort. threy do try to install SQL express, and they can use such things and LINQ combined with SQL to do some neat things, but they certainly don't require it.

SQL is "STRUCTURED query language" and is really a generic term. SQL is used by Oracle, Access/Jet, the windows search service, and all sorts of other things; they are not the same, but they follow the same basic syntax rules.

But this is not the point, the question here is why their machine has any form of SQL installed. In this case, MSSQL, which is Microsoft SQL Server, possibly the express edition. If Visual Studio has been installed this is possibly how it got there.

Solve : need higher version Adobe reader?

Answer»

I have Win XP and Adobe reader version 7.   I have come across a few websites that require Adobe 8 or 9.  Has anyone a problem with Adobe reader and Win xp?  I've been going through the search engines to see if there is something on this.  It is ashamed after that long download only to find out that there is a problem with either 8 or 9.

Make sure, you run "custom" install, and opt out from installing any extra toolbars.I ALSO recommend adding some additional memory.  I think you will be surprised the speed increase.  A 1 GB sick of memory is in the $40 range.

There are several places to buy memory (Circuit City, Newegg, etc), but one of the best is Crucial.  It scans your current memory and gives recommendations for upgrades.  It's not always the cheapest, but its' very reliable, especially if you are not familiar with adding memory.

I have Adobe Reader 8 installed on my Win XP system (512MB).  It works fine.

By the way, you really should update some other software on your computer, including Windows.  You're still using IE 6.  Why?  And, what about Service Pack 2 or 3 for Win XP?.  I use I 6 because the tool bar is handier and easier to use than the 7/8.  Internet Explorer should take this into consideration.  I know other users that think the same way.  It would be more beneficial;however, if I develop a streak of patience and  try it sometime.   I notice that Foxit has a tool bar.  I don't need that.  Is there one without that toolbar? Can it be removed without removing the download?

I haven't put more memory in yet.  My computer is 6 years old.  Maybe I should learn how to install the darn things.

Thanks
Hi,
I decided to use Cool pdf until I can get settled with another reader.  I have one problem.  I tried to open a pdf file and I keep getting a message that implies that my Adobe Acrobat reader is outdated. How can I get the computer to realize that I am not using A. A anymore?  Another words, how do I use a generic reader like this?

how do I use a generic reader like this?

If you run your generic reader app, in the options there may be an "Always use this program to open pdf files" setting you can select, or this should work:

Windows Explorer -> right click any .pdf file -> Open with... -> your desired reader program* -> check "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" -> OK

* In the dialog there will be a "Recommended programs" list, and under that an "Other programs" list, and if your desired reader is not on either list, you will need to click the "Browse..." button and manually navigate to the installed program folder and select the program.

Make sure, you run "custom" install, and opt out from installing any extra toolbars.

CoolPDF is not a PDF reader.  So, it's not an alternative to Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader.  CoolPDF is a PDF converter, it converts Word files and other files to PDF. But, again, it is not a PDF reader.

I have no idea why you think IE 6 has a toolbar that's easier to use.  Anyway, IE 7 and IE 8 are more secure for Internet use than IE 6.  IE 6 is way behind the times now.  You need to move on and accept a higher version.  Another very popular web browser is Firefox; you could try it.

Ditto. If I recall correctly, a toolbar - can't recall whether it was Yahoo or Google or something else - was offered but all one needed to do to not accept it was uncheck a box. Of course...Right, of course, but mentioning it seems necessary since lisashomeoffice seems to think she can't avoid that nuisance toolbar.I just downloaded & installed Foxit Reader 3.1, the latest version, and it does offer to install a "Foxit Toolbar" with extra (Foxit) functionality, but you can decline and nothing bad happens.anybody heard of or tried SUMATRA PDF viewer?

Solve : Virus updates and all that stuff?

Answer»

Hi guys,
For a while now I've had this thing niggling me about my anti virus software. The thing is I seem to be loosing faith in the established security software and I cant help feeling that all is not as it seems. And that bothers me a great deal.

Here's the thing and I really don't know so please help if you can.My Antivirus software (Norton) is CONSTANTLY letting me know that it's just had another update and it does it frequently, like sometimes three or four in an hour.If that's the case where are all these updates kept and why doesn't it affect my hard drive space because I cant FIND anything on my computer showing where all these important updates are.

Also and I've tried this how is it that if you don't have any software on board for virus prevention as in the case of say a new machine no virus problems but if you load one on and then let it expire well you seem to get a problem real quick but if you pay and update again all your problems seem to melt away.
Humm, guess I just don't trust something called the Symantec corporation, even sounds bad like one of those monster corporations from a science fiction movie.

And has anyone got any ideas or thoughts on any other packages that may be out there the reason I ask is that I was pointed towards an anti spyware program on this site that did wonders for my computer and found problems Norton didn't even know about only thing is I didn't have to pay because it was free.(Thanks again for that Patio)

All the best O.T.

Hi,
I gave up on Norton as I updated my yearly subscription and then a few months later I was informed that updates are no longer available for my version.  What a rip off.

Either your version of Norton has a corrupted file (hence not remembering the updates) or they are being blocked by a firewall.  Try disabling the firewall, then manually get the updates from Norton and then re-enable your firewall.

Most of the anti-virus programs out there that claim to scan your computer for free, tell you false infections to scare you into buying their product that will remove them.  Some of them are viruses, so when you pay to have these false infections removed, they actually INSTALL a virus!

I use AVG anti virus, it is free and so far it has not let me down.  Others you could try are;
Avast home edition.
Avira Antivir personal edition.
Bitdefender 10.

This is your 2nd nonsensecial POST today...
AVG Free is still fully supported.AVG 8.x will not be supported much longer patio. They want everyone to upgrade to ver. 9.Thanks Allan, i new i had read it on one of your other posts last week.I would think that you would always want the latest version of any av program.  You may not want to download it on the first day it's out, but within a few days it should be safe.

I remember a recent update of one of the free av programs that returned a number of false positives, but the problem was fixed within a day.

AVAST did have one FP one day that was fixed with an update another day.

The free AV's may not have all the tools that a paid AV may come with, but you can always get quality alternatives to the missing stuff  Quote

Solve : 16 bit on XP sp2?

XP Sp2 has been installed when it was installed something about 16 bit was not installed, we know find that we cannot RUN some 16 bit programs.

how can we run these programs without having to reformat and reinstall everything.

Regards
pRight click the Desktop, Go to Properties and select the Settings tab.
Change the Color Quality like in the picture below.

Does that help at all?Did you use the original windows disk that came with your computer to INSTALL XP? Was it an upgrade disk?
When was the first time you saw the error message?Carbon, I don't THINK he's talking about 16-bit colour (or "color" if you prefer).
List which programs won't run properly...
Or if you are savvy enough find the executable of the non running program and create a shortcut to it on the desktop.
Re-boot.
Now right clik the newly created shortcut and select "compatibility mode"
Re-boot and see if it runs properly.

If not post back with more details... Quote from: Dias de verano on June 17, 2008, 02:00:36 PM

Solve : Virtual OS??

Answer»

Alright, So im working on a project.
What I want to do is create a virtual os "partition".
I essentially want two computers
two monitors
two mice (INDEPENDENT)
two keyboards
all running from one tower, independently.

I WOULD just have two computers, but Id RATHER not go through all the networking needed.

Is it possible?

Two active desktops?
You should read up on virtual machines.  I've used a program made by VMWare before, but it shared all the hardware, so there was only one mouse, keyboard, etc.

http://www.vmware.com/If you are going to USE 2 of each keyboard, mouse and monitors also read up on KVM switching...

I'm not exactly sure with Windows 98, but according to Google, here is how you get there:

RIGHT CLICK My Computer, go to Properties and hit the Device Manager Tab.
http://www.modem-help.co.uk/old/help/dm.html

Can you see the CD ROM there? This is what I found. Is It one of these?
Disc drives
Display Drivers
floppy disc controller
Modem
Network adapters
Other devices
PCi Communication Device
Port(Com& Lpt)
SYSTEM Devices
Univerc Serial BUS controllersI would like for you to explain this statement "that no disk will run on screen". Are you waiting for it to autoplay? Have you tried opening My Computer and clicking on the disk drive?I had to change the modem disc, then placed the disc in my pc and waited for it to come up on monitor screen. It never would display on screen.I also tried  the other method you suggest and still nothing.Go to My Computer, right click on your disk drive, click on properties and tell us how Mb is on the disc. Right click again and click open and see what happens. Have you tried a regular audio disk to see if it would play?If you visit Dell's site and enter that Service Tag # it will tell you exactly what components are in that machine...
If that's the original CD Drive in there it has probably gone South by now.
They are fairly easy to replace. If you know someone who has done this before ask them to borrow a CD drive and show you how to install it...
This will tell you if it has failed or not.
If so get a new one. Dual layer DVD burners are about 40 bucks from newegg.com if you are in the States.

Solve : Computer cannot get pass the Windows screen?

Answer»

Hi, I'm having trouble with my computer. I have an Acer Travelmate 4500 and I've had it for 4 years now and I have never had problems with it until now.

I was watching a youtube video and it finished and I went to load another window and I suddenly got a blue SCREEN asking me to make sure things were installed correctly. It told me I needed to restart my computer, so I restarted my computer.

Upon the restart of my computer, it began to make a funny noise it has never done before. It was a little clicking noise that seemed to be coming from the left speaker. The acer window popped up then the screen that I get when I start my computer after I have put it on standby showed up and it was stuck there for a while. Finally, after it made it through that screen, it went to the Windows loading screen and then this blue screen popped up, saying something which I can never read because it GOES away just like that and restarts my computer.

Now, I've restarted it and it just keeps doing this. I called my father and he said I needed to start in Safemode. Now, once it starts up I hit f8 as quick as I can and it never registers that I'm hitting f8. F8 doesn't work for some reason.

My dad asked if I had my Windows XP disk and I told him not with me and even if I did, my dvd drive stopped working in September.

I was wondering if anyone knew why my computer has been doing this? My dad said he thinks my memory might have went bad, but I'm not sure (Since he said he has always been able to get into f8 unless the memory was shot). I cannot get my dad to LOOK at my computer due to the fact that I am in another state for the summer. Does anyone have any insight? Thank you so much! Are you tapping F8 repeatedly right after powering up ? ?
This is how it needs to be done.

Once in safemode go to Control Panel/Advanced/ Startup and Recovery and uncheck "auto restart on errors".

Re-boot

Now when you get a blue screen it will not restart...write down the entire error message and post it here...I do hit it repeatedly, but it still doesn't work. Right as I hit the power button I start hitting F8 as quickly as I can but it doesn't work. It goes right back to that screen that I get when I am powering up after it's been on standby. For what it's worth:  Acer TravelMate 4500 User Manual English

Seems like F8 key should allow access to Safe Mode (thru Windows Advanced Options Menu).

So... What works?  Can you use the F2 key during Power-On Self Test (POST) to enter CMOS SETUP utility (for system BIOS)?  Tap F2 key during power startup.Yes, F2 works fine and I can get into that screen just not when I PUSH F8.I tried to start my computer again and this time it got stuck on the Acer screen then I held down my start button and a black screen popped up and told me something about my Operating System failing or not there or something...

Solve : Windows Medial File?

Whenever I right-click on a .wmv file I get a flicker of a momentary black screen  and after a second or less it goes back to the PROPER screen.
I am using Windows XP Home Version 2002, Service Pack 3.  (come to think of it, this seemed to start after I downloaded and INSTALLED Service Pack 3).
I am running an Intel Celeron 335 CPU 2.80 GHZ 512 MB Ram

What version media player?

Does it happen only with .wmv files?

Solve : NTLDR error on Computers on a Domain within a Corporate Network?

Answer»

Hello
I wonder if anybody can help. We have a corporate network running 4 domains. Computers on one of these domains keep switching themselves off mid-use and when rebooted come up with the NTLDR missing error. When the ntldr and ntdetect files are reinstalled from the source cd's the computers work again for up to a month, before being struck down again!! we use CA eTrust which is at the latest version and has the latest file definitions and have downloaded the free trial of kaspersky v7.0.1.325, both of which find nothing on the PC's. The server they connect to is up to date and has had a full system scan, again which has found nothing.
Machines are a mixture of Win2k and WinXP, with Office2k or 2k3 installed. There is no other software installed. I have checked RECENTLY accessed files in Word, Excel etc. to see if a certain file is the root cause but there is no pattern.
This is the 3rd time this has happened in 3 months and is starting to cause major issues, so any assistance would be grateful
Is this a stand alone domain or is it a child domain? Does this domain have its own DNS server? Do you use DHCP in this domain?

How many machines are there in the domain with this problem?

Do you know if the SHUT down happens on or around the same day for the last 3 months?

hi, it is a child domain. machines on the root domain or other 3 child domains are unaffected. The domain does have its own DNS server and DHCP is used in this domain. The domain in question has approx 200 machines spread over 3 buildings. However the error only occurs in one of the buildings. We have done a full system scan on the machines, file server and domain controller and nothing has been found!!! The shutdown has happened on Tues 8th April,  Wed 7th May and Mon 16th Junethis happen at night? Or during the day?

Also do you run any jobs across the building's machines...ie. virus SWEEP...updates...etc.

How are the machines connected...cisco switch?

One more thing, are the users admins on the local workstation?

machines are SWITCHED off at night, and when turned on in the morning we have had 16 occurrances of this issue. However, we have also had 1 occurrrance of this issue during the day whilst an end user was in the middle of composing an email.
I have just taken over the management of the IT Helpdesk here, and it would appear that the W-SUS server has been taken down in the last couple of months so no updates are being deployed. It would also appear that users are not only local admins on the machines but also that a very unsecure local admin username and password is in effect!! (previous mis-management!). The machines are connected via cisco switches on site.I would start by first looking at the servers for a scheduled job or any batch programs that can be made to shut the machines down. I would setup a group policy to change the local admin account name and password.

I would suggest getting the WSUS server up and running.

Start to spot check machines for a scheduled task that may have already been setup from a power user who maybe friends with the old admin.

Setup a group policy to audit the security on the workstations for things like logins and use of admin rights.

Make sure your DNS and DHCP servers are not on the same machine.

Start to look up stream to your root domain and see what they are forcing to your child domain. Something maybe set wrong or they maybe friends with the old admin and messing with you.

As far as protecting the machines change the local security policy to allow admins only to access them remotely.

Force a password change to all users. This will clear out anyone who maybe running a job under someone else's account.

Check the servers services and see if you have any old user accounts running the service as them.

In general it sounds to me that you have someone who is making your life as the new admin crappy. I would go though everything and clean up as much of things as fast as you can to help prevent the next black out and run the audit logs on all the machines to track and maybe catch who is doing this...

Take nothing for granted and check with the building people to rule out a power outage.

Going forward I would take a few machines, if you have the hardware, and image them. Than the next time, if it happens again, you can swap out the machine and get the user running. This will look a lot better for you than having someone sitting around until you fix the machine.

Solve : Lost files on xp. Help!?

Answer»

Good day to all.

I have a custom built p.c., running Windows XP,2 GB RAM.
I had stored in my My Documents folder, lots of files, information in My Picutres, My Music, My Recieved Files etc. Each folder was filled with all my respective files in them.
Apart from that, I have MS Office, Windows live messenger downloaded, etc.
I have recently connected a wireless router,Linksys, and it is password protected.

I left home yesterday with the p.c. off, came back home to find Windows XP on, but all my documents missing, all my pictures, music, recieved files gone. Windows Live messenger was also gone.

When i clicked on Internet explorer, it gave me the start up page, like if i was using it for the first time. However some programs were still there, like Office.

Q1 - What could cause all the files to just disappear?
Q2- How, if possible, can I RECOVER them?
Click the start menu, and check to see that you are logged into the proper account.humar is pointing you to right directions......usually when a new user account is created, IE will FORCE you to select few settings. I don't think you have lost anything, you just have to look at the proper location on your computer OR login to your original account.

you can find all the user account file in the following path:

C:\Documents and Settings\youraccount\My Documents

Hope this helps

CheersHey Humar and Rookie,

Thanks for the reply. But the thing is that, i am the only user, single user, so i just use XP as is, I don't have a username and password to log into, when XP is BOOTED up.
IE and WMP when clicked on were like if i was using it for the first time. But the funny thing is that some additional programmes that were loaded were still there, eg Snagit,Regcure, Norton IS etc. But then some were not there at all, eg Windows live Messenger, and my printer driver. And then, all files from My Pictures,My Music, My Documents have disappeared, or have been wiped.

What else could be a cause/reason for this to occur just so?
Could some sort of a virus do this ?
And how else can i recover anything, if possible ?

Would appreciate any responses/any ideas/suggestions
Thanks guys
I know you said you are the only user but you could maybe be logged on as a guest.  When you click on start does it have your name at the top of the menu?  Also double check to see if there are any other users by going to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts.   Also, try searching for one of the files that you can't find.  Just think of a filename or song that you know you had on there and type it into the search window (Start > Search > All Files and Folders).  You might have ALREADY done this but this is all I can think of for now.  Good luck.

Solve : advice on error "floppy disk failure 40"?

Answer»

Hi,

I run Windows XP and recently on boot up I get the error message "floppy disk failure 40"  and then I have to press F1 to continue the boot up.

I have checked the BIOS and the Floppy Seek is Enabled and I have also put a floppy disk in the drive and read data and copied date to the floppy disk with no problem. So it WORKS but fails on the boot up sequence.

And advice would be, as always, greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
SampIn the BIOS is your floppy drive set to 1.4 meg?

Hi,

I had to find out how it was set, and YES it is set to 1.44meg.

Could it be related to the cables inside the computer?  Nothing has been moved, changed or installed for years.  Someone TOLD me that the connections could be bad but how would that happen?

If so the ribbon cable is connected upside down...

Now there is a tear-jerker memory

 Hi,

No the floppy light is not on and the interior cables have never been touched these past 5 years.  Nothing new installed either.

The weird thing is the drive works fine with a floppy, it will write and read the files, but when it boots up I get the error message and have to hit F1 to continue each time.

a mystery methinks....any help/ideas appreciated.

Thanks,
SampHave you tried disabling floppy seek in the BIOS? And/or disconnecting the floppy cables, data and power, from the drive?

Hi,

Yes, I disabled the Floppy Seek in the Bios and then it will boot normally, but when I enable the Floppy Seek again it does the same boot up error as before.  And then the drive works as it should....Weird...

I haven't tried System Restore yet, do you think that might make any difference?

Gracias in advance,

Yes, I disabled the Floppy Seek in the Bios and then it will boot normally, but when I enable the Floppy Seek again it does the same boot up error as before.
On your BIOS set-up, try using default SETTINGS, save and exit. Try checking also for any Boot sequence/priority under BIOS settings while floppy disk is enabled... If there is still no changes, remove the CMOS battery for atleast 2 minutes. Then insert again. It might just need a system reset. Go to BIOS, change time, date. Check again default settings, priority.

Solve : Mouse settings revert when I reboot?

Answer»

I have been using a Logitech "Comfort laser" wireless keyboard and mouse for years.
Recently the mouse has been acting up, so I purchased a Logitech M505 wireless mouse (original replacement parts are NOT available from Logitech!) in case it failed completely. Yesterday that happenned.
After I installed the new mouse receiver (USB, not PS2 like the original) I DISCOVERED that everytime I reboot the "swap buttons"  feature (I nust use my left hand as my right hand no longer works) has reset.

How do I get the mouse buttons to be properly left-hand oriented when I turn on my computer?

I do click "APPLY" after setting the mouse up.
I have tried both the windows mouse setup and Logitech's mouseware/Setpoint setups.
I found I actually need both because I also usr a Remote Wonder 2 from ATI and I need it's mouse click buttons to remain reversed as well.

Any thought would be appreciated,
Eric T.
Current OS running? Download Mike Lin's Startup CPL. Click on Standalone EXE Version(34 kb). After downloading(folder or desktop), extract the file and open(run) the program. Look for any "logitech files only" and uncheck. Click Apply then Exit. If it did'nt work, uninstall and install the driver or update latest driver for mouse(if any).http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml forgot I'm running Windows X

p Home Edition. I use msconfig to control what loads on startup. Logitech's Mouseware and Setpoint both run on startup. Hmmmm
It MIGHT be causing this due to SWITCHES(USB,PS2). You may want to look on your device manager on your USB Controllers first, click on update(expand, right-click) or reinstalling(reboot). Or toggle under start-up LOADING for both drivers(mouse and keyboard) by unchecking one or both then reboot. Use Start-up CPL first as suggested. If everything is still not working try, this tweak fix #30 --> http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
*Read the instruction on how to use VBS files.      I FIXED IT!!!   ;-)
I remembered what I learned when running Windows 98 SE. You do NOT need all the crud that loads at startup.
So I used msconfig and unclicked everything except what I actually use in the notification area. Such as ATIRW2, anydvd, setpoint, ETC.
wHEN i REBOOTED TO LET THE CHANGES TAKE EFFECT MY MOUSE REMAINED LEFT-HANDED.

Solve : Vitual Memory?

Answer»

Every week or so I GET a "Virtual memory too low - this will be increased etc etc"
There seems to be no affect to the running of the computer - its speed for example.
What if any is the effect of this virtual memory shortage and what should I do?
Does it mean I need to get extra memory, and if so can you recommend.
For info the capacity is 34.5, 23.8 used, 10.7 free.
Thanks in anticipation1) How much ram is installed?
2) What is virtual memory's setting (leaving it at "windows managed" should be fine)?Allan,
Thanks for reply.
In answer to your question - 512MB.
Okay. That's BARELY enough to run XP. If you are going to CONTINUE using that system you should add more ram.Allan,
Thanks once more.
What ram do you suggest.
Can ram be "plugged" into the BACK, really don't know what to do if I need to open the box.You need to install ram inside the system.

Solve : XP doesnt start in?

Answer»

normal way but shuts the PC down/restarts. Using last known good configuration same effect, but in safe modus (all 3 of them) it starts nicely. Up front I did a virus etc sweep but nothing was found....W7 on the other partition works fine...

Fixboot via recoverconsole DOESNT help. chkdsk says it finds some errors but doesnt specify and yesterday night everything was ok....well, except for the fact that I couldnt connect to windows update!!!!! Everything else WORKED fine...

AMD Athlon 3.2 Ghz, 3Gb RAM, XP, W7, IE8, Opera, AVGYou SAID chkdsk found some errors. Did you boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r ?problem now is that the restart just concentrate on xp and I do not get back my usual choice of either xp, w7 or recovery console, so what now? problem now is that the restart just concentrate on xp and I do not get back my usual choice of either xp, w7 or recovery console, so what now? My mean machine is clean, I used ESET to check...
Unticking automatic restart just gives me a bluescreen with the word STOP followed by a lot of zero's...lol...my WDG diagnostic tool says my HD is a ok.....I am so puzzled, especially when I cant get back my starting options....buhuuu
What is the EXACT blue screen error message (including those numbers with the zeros)?situation changed and without any explanation the xp started again and I could use it, but after a restart (needed to let my 2 other internal HD's be visible again) the show repeated itself....xp caused a restart, last good configuration the same and only the 3 safemodus options do work, thats why I can write this...didnt write down all the zero's after STOP on the bluescreen because the stuff started COMPLETELY unexpected...chkdsk says volume is clean and flawless(my words...lol), but now I wonder what the next restart will bring....last time the safemodus options just frooze...but again the startoptions do not appear (so no W7 and recovery console) system just starts XP and that's it

and although I have a genuine XP, I cant get in windows update either, all other sites no problem... Connected to my problem?and yeah!!!!!!!!! after unticking the automatic start in my PC properties and advanced, the blue screen appeared...lol..

STOP  0x0000007B, (0xBA4C7528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

restart gave the option sarfe mode with nettworking and that worked nicely but of course it is not a situation that will continue this way...

HMonitor says: fan ok, right speed, the 2 HD's are back again, temps around 30degr C for all, electricity powersupply great and within the limits, fan on chip and electricity housing top...so why does the bloody XP restarts my PC and why dont I get the option for W7 and recovery console? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

And one more time - boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /rand once again, the PC doesnt show either recovery console nor W7, it only shows the 3 safe modus option, whic work and normal start and last known good comfiguration which both DO NOT work... • Go to Piriform's website, and click the big button. Next, click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo LINK requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a PORTABLE version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
  • After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you DOWNLOADED the installer, SIMPLY double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
  • Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of COURSE):

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot You will see the following prompt:

Click Yes , then Copy to Clipboard

Now, right-click on any empty space in your reply box and click Paste.

Solve : Computer Keeps on Freezing?

Answer»

Hey Everyone,
I'm helping my house mate (I just moved in with him this week) ask this question because he's not too good with forums and just not too great with Internet-related things in general.  Anyway, he has Windows XP and his computer keeps on freezing at seemingly random times.  Sometimes it would freeze right at the Windows loading screen, sometimes when he's browsing through his Windows folder, sometimes when he's surfing the Internet, sometimes right after Windows loads (right when his desktop comes into view).

Three days ago I installed Service Pack 2 on his computer (before I installed SP2, he had no service pack at all) and for about two days, the computer did not freeze even once.  It usually freezes at random times - sometimes he could go on for days without it freezing, sometimes it freezes up to ten times in a row in a one-hour period.

Is there anything I can do to check out what's wrong or is there any way to fix this?  Also, any idea why this computer keeps on doing that?  It's a fairly new HP computer that he bought just about two years ago.  I scanned his computer with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, and HijackThis and everything seemed fine.

Thanks in advance,

Just right-click My Computer and open the properties box to see if the amount of RAM is reported as the full 256Mb, in case the video RAM is inclusive.

I find that 256Mb is too low and would suggest that you put in at least another 256Mb. This will make a world of difference. Whilst you are doing that just make sure that the original RAM module is PROPERLY seated by removing and replacing it as that is all too often the simple problem.

Have a read of this .pdf file and then visit the Crucial site. This is very often the CHEAPEST way to improve overall computer performance.

Many Windows XP computers made specifically for XP Professional have four RAM slots in the motherboard for 4 x 1024Mb modules.

e.g. the ACER Veriton range.
Hm, this really sounds like a problem, I'm not for sure what I would do. Alot of the suggestions already here might be a good start though.Congratulations...

Solve : CACLS Options, /T /E /G versus /T /E /P ??

Answer»

Which is best, /G or /P, or does it not matter ?

My preference is "/E /P" which results in

         BUILTIN\Administrators:F
         BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
         NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F

How is "single barrel-led" BUILTIN\Users: different from "double barrel-led" :-
BUILTIN\Administrators:
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:
NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:

What does /T do ?
CACLS /? says /T applies to "all sub-directories",
but how does that differ from
   CI - Container Inherit.
plus
   OI - Object Inherit.

I do not fully understand BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)F,
but I am overwhelmed by "/E /G" which gives
         BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)(IO)(special access:)

A standard "Guest" account/profile can be logged into without a password
My daughter has a normal User account with a password but without Admin authority.
Does CACLS consider them both equally "BUILTIN\Users:" ?

I have Admin authority (and a password)
Am I a "BUILTIN\Administrators:" ?

How do I become a "NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:" ?
Do I need to start in SAFE mode and log into my normal account ALAN ?
Or do I log into the special Administrator account via SAFE mode ?

I propose USING
CACLS "H:\Utils" /T /E /P Users:F
This I EXPECT to give full access for Guests etc.

QUESTIONS :-
If a new application is downloaded and held in a new folder under "H:\Utils\",
Will that inherit full access from the "H:\Utils" parent ?

If an existing application elsewhere in H:\ has normal NTFS restrictions,
will it retain those restrictions if I move it under "H:\Utils\",
Or will it now inherit full access from the "H:\Utils" parent ?

So I've tried tens of times to do a clean install of XP home with a legit retail disk. Sometimes in the install it won't be able to find a file on the disk, sometimes it will blue screen during installation, and sometimes it will actually install, like it did yesterday.

However, when it did successfully install, it was extremely unstable. Windows Update would simply fail to download the files, then IE would crash. Similar with Firefox, which I had to download multiple times because originally it was telling me that the install file was corrupt right after downloading.

As time went on, it became increasingly unstable, with IE constantly crashing. A system process named something along the lines of "windows genuine 32" also crashed a few times.

So, I tried another clean install, clearing the partition and reformatting using the non-fast format option.

I've tried this with a legit XP home install disk and a burned XP pro disk, with similar results. I got XP pro to install once, but it messed up SP2 install and then wouldn't boot from there. Also, XP pro was only recognizing about 123gb of my 1tb drive.

I've just tried to install XP home again, just put in the serial code and get a blue screen with the following information:

Also, my file photos used to automatically open with the fax VIEWER. For some reason it reverts to a photo program I have. How do I go about getting it to open with the Windows picture and fax viewer. KNEW how to do that about a 100 YEARS ago.

Thanks

Solve : Dell D505 won't cut on?

Answer»

Hi we just purchased a used DELL D505 used. It was on and running at the time we purchased it but we go it home and it won't even cut on.

Whenever I push the power button, lights come on and then a light that has an "a" start FLASHING and then it just cuts off.

I really don't know anything about computers so if you could maybe give me some advice or some steps to get it up and running that would be great. I mean, it worked for someone else at LEAST and hour ago. Is the seller 1. a person you can go back to? 2. A person that you trust?

Further questions:

3. Do you have a written RECEIPT for the money that you paid?

4. Is the seller a company or a private individual?

5. Are you trying to run it on battery or AC?

Solve : Macrium Refelct CD Linux??

Answer»

Ok so I made a linux rescue disk from macrium reflect and my question is do i have to make a new rescue disk for every computer because when i put it in a diff computer it would'nt boot. Is the other PC set with the CDROM as 1st boot device ? ?
It won't work unless it is...yes it is Here is the boot device list:
1st device  cdrom
2nd device floppy
3rd hdd

this is a motherboard from an HP compaq dc533 sff By the way> my old mainboard ASUS P4P 800 SE has died.
I know it boots from disk for when i inserted the windows xp SP2 cd it booted from that. Are you sure that you made the Macrium Reflect rescue disk properly? Have you ever booted from it on any computer? Have you inspected it CAREFULLY for scratches?

it booted with every other computer in  the house. even my laptop. QUOTE from: comda on November 22, 2010, 03:58:18 PM

it booted with every other computer in  the house. even my laptop.

So exactly which machine won't boot to it ? ?
the hp dc 533 sff. Not all CD players accept all makes of Media.

Verbatim works well for me.  Other brands do not fly.

Try installing Macrium to this machine and create the boot cd on it...

Not quite sure why this is happening other than what Alan suggested...

My boot CD works on all my machines. One other possibility is that Linux drivers do not support the same range of hardware as the "Vista PE" based drivers.

If you paid for Macrium Reflect then you should be able to download Vista PE from them.

Macrium Reflect does have a support forum and dedicated help.

No...but there is a Free legal version of Macrium Reflect...

I misunderstood...

Carry on!

Both Macrium Reflect Free and Macrium Reflect FULL are legal, but you pay for the FULL version

I BELIEVE it is typical of all Boot CD's from Acronis and Macrium and others,
that LINUX drivers do not work so well as "native" Windows drivers.

Install Macrium on the HP and you can create a BartPE Boot CD which takes  native drivers from the HP Windows Installation disc and you should then have drivers compatible with the HP platform.

The FULL version also allows you to download and use the Windows PE 2.0 Rescue CD with RAID support.

Differences FULL vs FREE at
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

N.B.  I have an Acer Laptop and it cannot even write to one brand of CD - it FAILS to read information to even know if it is CD or DVD,

Solve : service pack 2 wont install?

Answer»

Hi, I have dell OPTIPLEX desktop (pretty old but it does the job) however, I have downloaded WINDOWS sp 2 but at the end of the installation process  an error box appears saying " you can only install this update on build 2600"  I m running on xp pro. Any help very much appreciated.1. If you open a command prompt window and type VER and press Enter, what do you see?
2. Why aren't you installing SP3?
3. Is your installation of XP genuine and activated?

Forget SP2 - install sp3hi

i have a dell PC with the window xp product key on the side, however when i had problems i reinstalled xp with a copy that was not genuine,

Will using a dell windows xp reinstall disc ( i can buy online) solve my problems, or have i written over the genuine copy of windows forever.

any comments most appreciated.

I've merged these topics since I assume they are the same issue. Depending on how you tried to install the illegal copy, you MAY very well have to start from scratch.hi, is there a way to see if the first copy is STILL on the hard drive, ie  more than one version or somthing..........Add/Remove Programs should list all SP's and hotfixes installed... Solve : MSN question?

Answer»

Hello

I have an old version of MSN (4.7) which works OK, but wanted to download a NEWER version. I am using XP home, but I get 'installer file' problems when I try to install it.

What might be the cause of that, please?

Thanks.

High1What does the error say?

Hello Spoiler

Thanks for your post.

If I try to download MSN 2011 from the explore.live site I am asked to save/run wlsetup-web.exe. I click to save it to my C drive, and then run, but then it says C:\wlset-web.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I then try to insall 2010 (messenger.exe) from a third party site, and I get the FOLLOWING:

Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include INCOMPLETE download and damaged media.

If I then try for MSN 2009 from the windows live site that asks me to save the wlsetup-web.exe,
and the error I get then says: IE cannot download wlsetup-web.exe from wl.dlservice.microsoft.com. The
connection with the server was reset.
.

I am not sure how accurate those error messages are.

Thanks

High1I get the same problem and have not found a solution yet. Hope to hear of one soon.Messenger 2011 requires Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
Oh, right, thanks for that Rustys.

Still, I should be able to use a version later than 4!

Thanks.

High1You are welcome

Yes you may the LINK is included is

http://explore.live.com/windows-live-Messenger-XPHello Rustys,

Thanks for the link.

That refers to this file (the one I mentioned above): wlsetup-web.exe. I cannot 'run' that file because I get a MESSAGE saying: Coouldn't install programs. Use Windows Update to download the latest version of Windows Installer, and try again.

The Microsoft site tells me - looks like this is where the problem might be - that 'the following updates were not installed: Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1; and Update for Windows XP (KB898461).

So, basically that will be why I can't update Messenger.

I might take a look at that KB article

Thanks again.

High1

Yes, looks like I have Messenger 2009!

Many thanks.

The problems was I didn't have those two updates (although Windows Update is set to automatic). If you don't have those, you need to look for them on the MS site (not the easiest thing), but at least it's resolved now.

Many thanks!

Solve : Skippy/Choppy audio and video playback?

Answer»

You can disable all non-MS items. I don't see anything mouse/keyboard related.

However, my BED time is coming, so I'll check on you TOMORROW K i did all that stuff in msconfig, still got the same problem :-(Go to the start menu and click "Run..."

Type in "dxdiag" and press enter.

Click the "Sound" tab.

Under "DirectX Features", there should be a slider BAR. If the slider bar is on any other setting other than full acceleration (No acceleration, basic acceleration, standard acceleration), then move it to full (all the way to the right).

If it's already at full and you are still having this issue, move it one notch to the left (standard acceleration). See if any of that helps. Also, undo all changes, you made in "msconfig". That was for TESTING purposes only.i also noticed that the cpu usage spikes very high when the choppiness occursYAY!!!  It's fixed!  Turns out it was the wireless internet driver, so I just disabled it and everything's working fine now.  Big sigh of relief lol!  Thanks so much for ur help :-)Good news

Can anybody help me with this error message?Possible hard DRIVE issue...

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is APPROPRIATE for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the PROGRAM, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Solve : can't finish loading window xp.?

Answer»

Hi guys
        Thanks to the adm
Am trying to load window xp into my computer, its a p4,Ram 1gb,cpu 1.7,and a desktop.
the cd runs until the formatting stage and it hands there,I've tried different h/disk but the STORY is the same.
I have 3  (40gbs) but there is no progress.
If you can help me thanks in advance. Are you using an original, retail XP CD?

If so, TELL us the exact steps you are taking to install and what was on the system prior to this installation.Have you confirmed that the cables are connected to the HDD and controller securely?

Check to make sure the jumpers on the drive are set properly (Slave/Cable Select/Master).

Replace the HDD cable with a different one, put one of the drives into another system see if it works there (cannot see why 3 would go at the same time).

Do not laugh WATCHED some one forget to plug the power to a drive and then wonder why it no longer worked.

Cheic the disk make sure it is not scratched so bad the drive cannot read it or the CD drive could be going or need to be cleaned.Try deleting the old partition, then create a new one and FORMAT. Hi,

Which version of XP you are loading. Ignore the above post - we already know.

Solve : Installing OS in a mini laptop not having DVD / CD RW preinstalled in it .?

I have a  COMPAQ  MINI  LAPTOP  110C-1100DX Product No : VM146UA#ABA ; I have been using it since DEC 2009 ; of late it has started showing BLUE SCREEN ERROR , and it immediately shuts down; and  soon restarts automatically . This cycle goes on repeating almost every 5 to 10 MINUTES

Yesterday it was checked at an Authorised Service Centre. SELF  TEST  for  RAM , and  HARD  DISC  was  done  on the laptop. Results  of  both  the  tests  are  good -- there  is  no  "Fault" in these two  HARDWARES ;  I  have  now  been  advised  to reload  an OS afresh.

Being a Mini Laptop, it does not have inbuilt DVD / CD RW . However, my Desk Top does have a finely working DVD RW , and  I have a 4GB PenDrive and also an  Original  WINDOWS  xp  home  EDITION . With the help of these, can I install the OS afresh in my Laptop ?
Will some MEMBER guide me ?  Thanks for the help.  ---  Sincerely,  Dr. R. V. JOSHI. Double Post.

Solve : My computer does not open a new window when I click on a link.?

Answer»

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong with my Dell Dimension 5100? I am with Windows XP Home Edition.Recently I have been unable to OPEN links sent to me in emails.I USED to have no trouble with this- it has been just recently. I am not very well "clued up "with computers, and this is why I am seeking help. I would appreciate any advice offered.use the html and url fixes: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htmThanks Allan,
Sorry to appear IGNORANT, but could you explain what I should do once I have opened the link you sent me( I CAN open this one)?Which of the list of links do i then click on?Appreciate your help.les.Download the two fixes and run them.HI,

1.  Open IE8 with protected mode on
2.  change to protected mode off and do not restart the browser
3.  click a link that should open a NEW window, it works!

Thanks Andrekakkar,
Your reply stumped me a bit-sorry,but I'm not very computer literate. IE8 means Internet Explorer 8,yes?I have dowmloaded that, but still don't know how to get protected mode, and turn it on or off.Very sorry for this, but could you talk me through this next step? many thanks, Les.Don't worry about it. His SUGGESTION will not help. Did you run the registry fixes?Hi Allan,
I clicked on each of the fixes(html& url),and each time I then clicked open this file, then for an instant another window opens and a green bar rapidly moves across right to left, then another larger window opens headed  "html association-fix" within which there is an icon labelled "html association-fix".I click on this icon and a window opens headed  File Download Security Warning.I click in the box "Run" and another long narrow(horizontal) window opens headed Registry Editor containing a message"are you sure you want to add the information (many digits and symbols).I click in the box "yes" and a similar box appears with the message "the information in c/document(many digits and symbols) has been successfully entered into the registry.Finish. But unfortunately nothing has been achieved.Sorry for the long explanation- I wanted to tell you exactly what I did in case you could see what I did wrong. Leslie.Okay. You did it the long way around but regardless, it sounds as though the registry changes were made successfully. Is IE your default browser? And which email client do you use?Yes,I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 last night. My email server is Outlook express. But this happened before you installed IE8, correct?

If so, follow the steps in this link:     http://www.the-pc-guru.com/Hyperlinks_dont_work_in_ema.php
Yes,yours was the first reply,so i first tried your links, then when that didn't work tried Andre's solution, and downloaded Windows8.I'll try that new link you've just given me now.Thanks.Problem solved-Thanks Allan.Glad to hear it. You're welcome.

Solve : Screen brightness delay on wakeup?

Answer»

My screen brightness remains very dimm for about 15MINS after wakeup.  Where can I change the setting to 100$ brightness after wake up.
Its driving me crazy.  ThanksThere are buttons on the front or bottom front of the monitor, if its a desktop screen that is. If its a laptop look at the keyboard for the contrast up button and hold the FN key and press the contrast up key as well. What is the system you are using; if its a laptop and your on battery power it can dim the display for that. You could try looking under the power settings on the COMPUTER.Hi, I'm using a desktop PC, Windows 7.  Have tried the contrast buttons on the screen and have not found any relevant setting in the power settings on the computer to fix this (unless I am missing something).  Does it have anything to do with the S3/S4 Power on by Ps/2 KB and mouse setting in BIOS?  It takes about 15 - 20min after waking up the pc to get the brightness up to normal, when first woken up the screen is very dim, so not sure if it is a power saving setting or other. Thanks
