Solve : printing from web page?

Answer»

When I print a web page it cuts off the right SIDE of the page. How do I ADD SHRINK to fit page in print preview. I have page width, whole page and two pages. What web browser are you USING? What is the resolution setting on your monitor? Does this happen with all web pages or just certain ones?

Solve : Access 2007 question?

Answer»

Hello.
I have some dropdowns in my database that I want locked.
That is to say, I only want to be able to SELECT either nothing or something from the dropdown. I don't want to be able to type text. I have changed the status of the Display Control to List Box, not Combo, but I can still type in the box. How can I 'lock' the options?
Thanks heaps! If its to select between True or False ETC, what about removing the text as active and CREATE a RADIO BUTTON instead or check box and have the text that you want to remain static listed off to the side of the button or checkbox.

If you have more than nothing -or- something then you will might also look into a list to chose from that is locked, and if more than say 4 selections perform the drop down menu.

Solve : My computer sceen goes black?

Answer»

Thanks for getting my first computer on track! Now I have a problem after a few minutes of USE the sceen is black with words ,then it counts down to restart the computer but just keeps repeating itself. I turn off the computer for a few minutes and restart and it will let me login for awile. then shuts down and starts the countdown over with no successSpecs...? Make and Model of the computer would be nice

Have you added/removed any hardware or software prior to the problem?

edit: may be a VIRUS, I've had experiences when a worm would CAUSE my computer to restart like you described..... try booting into Safe Mode with Networking, update your anti-virus defintions and run a scan......Download, Install, update, and run Malwarebytes too(it's free )

To get into safe mode with networking: shutdown your computer, turn on, tap F8 key, when Advanced Options appear, SELECT "Safe Mode With Networking"

Please do, inspect the inside of the computer. Verify that the cpu fan is spinning when turned on, and see if there is a LOT of dust. Look at the heat sink of the CPU. If there is a lot of dust, I would get yourself a can of compressed AIR, pronto!

Solve : Does brand matter for RAM??

Answer»

Getting a 1G stick replaced after 20 months with no hassle is a good thing...
Brand matters.Alright and one other thing:

I'm going to GO with the Corsair most LIKELY, but how do we figure out/where do we RUN a scan to see if our computer can run a 2700 or a 3200? I did the "CAN YOU RUN THIS?" test and THINK my computer had SLOTS for both, but are there other sites?

Thanks a lot againWhat type of ram do you have now? If you have 2700 getting 3200 would be a waste because it would set itself to 2700. And if you have 3200 and you get 2700 the 3200 will go down to 2700You can try looking up your motherboards model online and find the specs of the board. Or find the manual. Those should tell you what you can handle.

Do you know the model of the motherboard?

Solve : None of the usb ports are working?

Answer»

I am trying to help a friend out who called and said that lighting had hit his place, it did fry the printer and the computer still works but none of the usb ports are working. You can plug a usb mouse in and it will light up but not work. It's like having fire without any juice.

I read somewhere that the if the system got a shock the bios would go to restricted setttings registering all your ports useless. The article suggested going into the bios and making sure all ports are enabled then reinstall all chipset drivers.

Does this sound correct? If so which category will I FIND the ports to enable them. You can tell I have not been to bios school by now:)

Can someone please advice. He has an emachine about two years old running xp.

Thanks for any advice!Do you or your friend have a spare USB PCI port card? I would try to get a hold of one and see if the USB ports on there are working.I do and thought about taking it up there and sticking it in but in another post i read where some guy did that without any luck but it's worth a try but the problem will still exist unless you just used the card. True, but you could then use a keyboard and mouse. Then go into Computer Management under Device Manager and double check to see if the onboard USB ports show up. If they do make sure "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power." is unchecked. You can find this option under Universal Serial Bus Controllers by double click the USB ROOT Hubs. I would uncheck that option for all Hub in that section.Sorry maybe I mislead you. I can use the pc with a Ps/2 mouse and keyboard and I have went into the device manager and it says all usb ports are fine...

I open system information and there are no errors and everything seems to be fine. I have tried a system restore three or four days ago at a restore point, I tried to start in last good know configuration,

Can't find anything the signifies there is a problem. It's just weird that that one mouse and everything lites up but the motherboard is not recognizing anything.

There main concern since this was a business was using the printer to let quick books print the checks etc.

In device manager it says that the usb devices are working PROPER, got me...Did you check for the power setting check BOX i mentioned? You should uncheck those. Also try booting into the BIOS and make sure that the USB ports are enabled. I have seen a similar issue and in the BIOS they were disabled. The ports would still work, but not properly until they were enabled in the BIOS.that's where I get a little fuzzy. I know I to access the bios but in the list of categories which one will I select to enable the usbs.

Thanks for you help man. When you are booting your computer, it should display what kind of BIOS and the version you have. Can you please supply that information. Also is a custom built computer? If so what is the motherboard model? If not what kind of computer is and do you have access to the computers motherboard to get make and model from it?

Quote from: freepims on May 29, 2009, 06:06:39 PM

Thanks for you help man.
Anytime! That's why i got on this forum.

HoFLI did a search on the site about setting a bios back to default settings and I can see I am going to have to find out those specs on the motherboard that you referring to.

I am going back in the morning, taking a card might try it after I find out about the other. I have been in the bios on some that said hit f5 or what ever to set factory defaults but I didn't see that on this one today. I downloaded the hardware manual before I left but forgot to email it to myself, that's nothing new.

I guess I'll sleep on it and let you know what happened when I get back.

Take care and thanks again...

In the BIOS, try setting it back to "load fail-safe defaults". That usually will get rid of a problem you are having. Then one by one add any other settings you ma want.Clear CMOS
Open the computer case and look for the CMOS battery.

Take the battery out and put it back in after about ten minutes.

Make sure you are grounded before touching any internal components. Static electricity can fry the motherboard!
While you are in there, I would also, blow out the dust with a can of compressed air.If the printer was fried by lightning, then high voltages were involved, and insulation broke down.

If the printer was connected via USB to the computer I would EXPECT devastation of the hardware interface, the BIOS is the last place I would look.

If the Hardware manager reports the USB ports are O.K., that means simple tests of commands / responses are O.K. - it is unlikely to have validated every signal path through to and including the actual contacts that engage with the external world - which can withstand more electrical abuse than transistors, but were never intended for lightning strikes ! !

Regards
AlanThanks to everyone for their help. I tool a pci card and put it in the machine and it worked fine. My friend was satisfied with that so that's were I left it.

I did install CC Cleaner and on the first pass I got 1918 MB of junk so I went ahead and give it a good cleaning. I can't believe how people just let the trash keep building up. Of course there were another three programs that were screaming for updates so I took care of that.

It would probably blow our mind just to know how many machines are junked when they just need a little TLC.

Have a great weekend, what's left of it! Glad to hear that your friend was happy with the solution of using a PCI USB card.

Have a great weekend as well!

Solve : How can I view outlook files from Vista using windows XP pro?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I wonder if some one could please help me. My wifes Dell XPS laptop has just died with a power supply fault on the mother board. This will take a few weeks to fix. In the mean time i need to WORK out how I can set her up to continue to work with her e-mail, and I'm struggling, so advice is sort.

Her system is running Vista, with outlook 2007, and SINCE the laptop will no longer power up, I have removed her hard drive, and installed it onto my desk top PC (as drive D, not the boot disk) USING the SATA drive cables. My PC runs windows XP pro, and outlook 2002. I can SEE her disk, and access the files on it. I have also been able to set her up to receive and send new emails on my PC, but my question is does anyone know if and how I can import the outlook files from the hard drive of a Vista PC, into my XP pro PC, so she can VIEW her old correspondence for the next week or two while we wait for Dell to come and fix the problem. Clearly anything solution has to be able to be run form XP, not Vista. (To be honest I'm having trouble finding the files on the vista hard drive - but I know they are there somewhere)

Thank for your help.

kind regards
Jester9erI would not personally attempt to load a later version of an Outlook data store into an earlier one. Well, I might, but I would make darn sure I had a backup copy first. I don't have much hope of success, but you should find the file somewhere under the hidden "Application Data" folder or the "Local Settings" folder. These will be in your wife's User Data folder. Ensure Windows Explorer is configured to view hidden files and folders.

Let us know if you need more guidance. Thanks for the quick reply Rob.

I've managed to find the files now, and I must say I too don't hold up much hope of getting the new files to open in an older version of Outlook, but I'm ever hopeful that, given all the trouble with vista in the early days, someone has worked out how to do it. Anyway, I'll back up the files and hope someone here might be able to help.

So attached in the word document, is the screen shot of Zorana's (my wife) outlook directory. Anyone know of any free tools that might be able to down save these files (one or more, I'm not sure how many I need), to work in Outlook 2002. Or any suggestions of which files I might need to copy over?

Thanks
Dave

Solve : Outlook always asks for Password?

Answer»

Beginning last night, when I open Outlook, it asks me for the passwords for my mail accounts. I have the "remember" password box checked, but it always asks anyway.Does it accept the passwords? Don't know if you're in the UK, but BT has issues with their mail services yesterday and lots of people were having this very issue. The dialog box always pops up asking for the password when accessing the accounts (I have 4 email accounts monitored through outlook. Even when I check "remember password", it does it every time.

I am in the USSo you enter the password, click OK and can see your NEW mail OKAY? I would SUGGEST you start by recreating the email accounts. You can create a copy before deleting the old one - better for testing purposes.I went through the steps on a Microsoft site to try to fix my "corrupted" outlook FILE......and I found a temporary solution.......Outlook Express lol....works fine for now Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on May 31, 2009, 12:35:18 PM

I would suggest you start by recreating the email accounts.
Did you do this? Did you try deleting the email accounts in Outlook and then recreating them? I did that....same result......something is up with my ".pst" file, I guess, so I switched to Outlook Express and that works fine for now. I will continue to research when I have some time.

ThanksWell I guess you could just create a new .pst file...I will try that, but have a lot of saved emails and contacts...thanks for your help!!!

This site is great!!!You could copy everything from the old .pst to the new .pst - it's possible to have them both open in Outlook SIMULTANEOUSLY.

This special diagnostic mode of Windows enables you to fix a problem which may be caused by your network or hardware settings. Make sure these settings are correct in Control Panel, and then try starting Windows again. While in safe mode, some of your devices may not be available.

I'd wait until carbon GETS through. Change it to General in the Numbers tab.

Solve : Need help with VB script?

Answer»

Hi all, I have a question about VB script that I hope you guys can give me some help on. Here's the situation I ran into.

I am creating a program that's NEEDS to be run on both Win2k3 32-bit and 64-bit. The program works fine on the 32-bit Win2k3. But when I runs it on the 64-bit ED, it broke. What I have is a vbscript that calls and try to execute a cmd file. It contains "diskpart" and "SHUTDOWN". Those are the two commands that has PROBLEM when I run the script. It says that those two commands are not RECOGNIZED as an INTERNAL or external command, operable program or batch file. But when I just type in those commands on the command line without the .cmd file, they works just fine.

Can anyone give me some pointers in about how to get this fixed or a way around it? Thanks for the help.

Solve : Restore Points help?

Answer»

I am running WIN xp pro and wanted to know about restore points?

If I set the restore points slider to 0 % it says I will be USEING 200 MB of my hard drive for restore points. And it I st the slider to 1. % it says it will use 1122 MB of my hard drive for restore points.

So how many restor points can I have in 0. % 200 MB of my hard drive ANDHOW many can I have in 1. % 1122 MB of my hard drive??SYSTEM Restore points are located here:
C:\System VOLUME Information\_restore{6EFB3312-5B30-4CC4-B9A7-CF16443E8C25}\

Looking at my restore points, each of them are about 40 to 120mb.

In 200mb, I would think about 1 or 2 restore points can be saved.

In 1122mb, maybe about 11.How long does restore points stay in the computer for?

Like if I have it set to 0. % 200 MB it will keep 1. or 2. restore points you told me but for how long? If I make one today will it keep it untill I make onother?

And when does the computer make it's own?? Quote

If I make one today will it keep it untill I make onother?
Yep.

That's why they are called 'Restore Points'. They will stay there until you need to restore your computer to an earlier time.

Solve : Boot up issues ROM?

Answer»

I run windows XP. recently when trying to boot up the computer stops at PL-ROM-FFC:1. (There might be another letter before the PL, as I have a 18" monitor and the first letter may not be showing) This is after Analyzing network Media type, this will take several seconds. OK

Also before that is displayed there are several other PL-ROM settings.

PL-ROM-ADR: 0050 BAE7 BAA9
PL-ROM-INQ: 11
PL-ROM-PIO: EC00
Then the PL-ROM-FFC: 1

There is a flashing cursor after the 1 but I can't get it to GO ANYWHERE. I have to reboot in order to get out of the screen.

I do not recall installing any new software or down loads. I did get rid of some software that I was not using. I think I might have the original XP operating program disk, if I have to reinstall. I would hate to lose everything since I am not a computer person and would not know how to install any of my internet stuff or other software programs like Nero or photo shop.

Do you think my hard drive is finally taking a dump? Since ROM stands for READ only memory.

I think it's an 'R' that's off the edge of the screen. This is a Novell Netware issue. Go into the BIOS and set the Primary Boot Device as the Floppy, the Secondary as the CD and the Tertiary (third) device as the Hard drive. Sounds like it's set to look for another PC on a network to boot from.

Does this look like your situation?

RPL-ROM-IRQ: 5
RPL-ROM-PIO: DC00

RPL-ROM-FFC:

---- and here the numbers sloooowly go up from 1 to 200
(takes about 5 minutes or so) and then WinXP starts up
and everything works fine.

If possible, boot into Safe Mode and use the system restore utility.

Alan <>< yes but it never gets to the 1-200 count. Also how do I add in the hard drive? The last spot says Network and there is no way to add in anything no blinking cursor or choices. at the bottom there is [UP/DN] Select [Return] Boot or [ESC] cancel. Aslo how do you get to the safe mode to restore utilies from the issue I am having. I mean if I keep hitting F8 I just get to the AMIBIOS System configuration screen with the Select Frist Boot Device that has a blue screen. it has Floppy CDROM and Network to choose from and you can not add any network info. Then boot into the BIOS / set the 1st boot device as the cdrom/ reboot with the XP CD in the drive / choose the restore option.

Alan <>< Thanks Alan. I will try that when I get home. Oh by the way, I LOVE Mr. Bill.

Solve : Win XP Pro SP2 will not boot.?

Answer»

My desktop was working fine until I powered it down and went on vacation for a week. When I returned, it will not BOOT. It is set up to log on automatically as the main user (me) when it boots. It gets as far as showing me my desktop BACKGROUND, with no icons. I then SEE "loading your settings", followed by "logging off", "saving your settings". It then repeatedly cycles through "loading" and "saving" settings until I cut the power. Same THING happens when I attempt to enter Safe Mode. Any THOUGHTS on how I can get my system under control? There seems to be a lot of these...

Do you have the Windows Disc handy? You might need to perform a Repair Install.CAN you boot into the safe mode? If so when in safe mode try doing a system restore

Solve : Browser opens 1/2 size?

Answer»

Whenever I click on one of my desk top icons whether it be Google (which is my home page), or any other icons the window opens 50% size and I have to click to GET it to OPEN full size. I've tried opening it and expanding it to full size and then closing it with file / close and reopening the window but its back to the same size. I've also opened it, dragged it from the CORNERS to expand it to full size hit the X and closed it and the same thing happens next time I open it. I would really appreaciate any advice on how to fix this really annoying problem. (any idea what causes it?)

Thanks
FrustratedIf you're talking about Internet Explorer, resize as you did, and then hold CTRL key while closing. Thanks, I tried it but it didn't work. To reiterate, whenever I open a desk top icon including this site it opens to half size (a long verticle rectangle). I can open IE full size from my start tab but if I save it (IE) to my desk top and open it again voila, its half size. Still searching for an answer..How are you creating these desktop shortcuts to web pages ? ?
I'll bet you're resizing IE so you can drag the icon to the desktop...I right click on the page and hit create a shortcut which appears on my desk top. Has WORKED just perfectly for seven years until now...HELP

Right Click My Computer and go to Properties.
How much RAM does it say there? Quote from: Bones92 on July 06, 2008, 03:21:58 PM

~390M of Commit Charge (that does refer to ram doesn't it?)

Only partially - look here: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/c/commit_charge.htm

Look up the RAM on your computer the way CARBON said to do it. That number will be the actual physical RAM amount - from what you said, it ought to = 1GB.Also...

Yes.
What about that RAM thing?
Hold Windows key, and hit Pause/Break. What does it say?It says:

Quote
AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile
Technology TL-52
1.61 GHz, 480 MB of RAM
Physical Address Extension
I see two options:
- buy another 512MB of RAM
- clean reinstall (how old is your computer? EVER reinstalled Windows?)
I'd start with 20 bucks, and extra RAM.Ok, i guess i'm up for buying more RAM. I don't really want to re-install windows.

Thanks for the help.Keep us posted...512 - 480 = 32......you likely have your video borrowing 32M of RAM which threw everyone off.
If it was sold to you saying there was iG then you got ripped off or someone helped themselves to a 512M stik of RAM.

Just installed a program that DISPLAYED my internet cache. there is no option in this program to delete these files. ANYONE know how to delete internet cache in XP Pro ?It is done through whatever browser you are running...
Firefox = Tools /Options/Advanced/Network/ Clear Cache Now.

I don't use IE but it can be CLEARED from Start/Accessories/Disk Cleanup. Also for IE: Start>control Panel>Internet Options>General Tab; or, within IE: Tools>Internet Options>General Tab.

Also for FF: CTRL+SHIFT+DEL will bring up Clear Private Data screen.CCleaner?

Solve : Error 'rundll' when I try to access 'display' (not during startup)?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is a windows error or if it is being caused by a virus, but as of today, whenever I click on 'display' in control panel or try to access it by right clicking on desktop the following message appears:

rundll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll
access is denied

All I want to do is change my desktop picture's PROPERTIES, but that it is not allowing me to open the display window makes me think the problem is BIGGER than just with opening 'display.'

Please, if anyone knows what I can do to fix this or may know what the problem is, let me know.
ThanksGo Start>Run, type in:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll (<----watch for "SPACES")
Click OK.
Restart computer.Thanks--
but, it change the problem. Desktop display still wont open. I get the same message.
I even double checked the spaces. What Windows version is it?What do you mean by "it change the problem"?My MISTAKE- I meant that it didnt change the problem.
Its windows XPGo Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy. Now, the error message is showing if I try to access windows clock too, which by the way is incorrect even though I have it set to manual and not web updated.

What will happen when I run this? If I have to have a windows cd handy, is it going to reboot my computer and erase files? No. It'll only check for integrity of your computer system (Windows) files. Your programs, and data are safe.Ok, I RAN it and when it was done, nothing happened. I restarted the computer. But still the error message and the access denied. Do you use Comodo firewall?yes I doDisconnect physically from the internet (turn off modem, or router).
Exit Comodo.
See, if you can access "Display".Aha!
Yes, I can then access the display and the clock. What does this mean? Is there a setting in comodo that is keeping me from opening display? No. This is some Comodo glitch.
Do you have the newest Comodo version (open Comodo, go Miscellaneous>About)? It should be 3.0.25.378
If not, update.
If yes, download fresh Comodo copy, disconnect from the internet, uninstall Comodo, install fresh copy, reconnect.

Solve : MissingPartitionInformation(new problem with a live update manager)Read7thPost?

Answer»

Hi, I hope this is in the right section. Last night I decided to update my bios, using an auto update program made by my manufacture, after it was done updating it said to restart my computer so I did, and that is when problems started occurring, it could no longer detect my hard drive, I got my slave drive working and I tried the same thing on my master drive but it comes up with the error that it cannot recognize the partition I selected. However you can delete the partition and create one on the resulting unpartitioned space.
My MAIN questions:
1. Can I set up a bootable CD with the autoexec.bat and work the same as a bootable floppy, if so how would I go about doing that?
2. If I delete the partition will I lose my information on that hard drive?
3. If so to above, how can I save my information on my hard drive?

I believe that is everything I would like to know. If there is any information about my computer you need to know please respond back. Also please tell me any other suggestions you might have to solve this problem without risking the data.

I use Windows XP.
my answers
2) If you delete the partition..... (sorry to say) you will lose your data.

3) The only way I can thing of to save your data is to connect your hard drive to another bootable computer and transfer/copy your information to another storage device.

Or you can install an operating system on your slave and make the slave the master. Then transfer/copy your information to another storage device or onto the slave made into the master.

hope this HELPS and makes senseThese occorunces happening right after a BIOS flash are not a good sign...why did you need to flash it ? ?Well, my computer kept making beeping noises, there was no sound, and it kept crashing and restarting. I was thinking maybe if I just make sure everything is up to date it will stop crashing and all problems dissappear.

And I recently bought some data recovery software so I just used that to get my necessary data off, so I will just reformat it and make it workable again.Understand that the BIOS is totally seperate from the operating system...it controls all the functions of the motherboard itself.
This is why caution should always be exercised before a BIOS flash.
Best case scenario...it still works.
Worst case scenario...you have produced a doorstop.

Check back with the manuf. site to see if you can reverse the process if need be.Their site only either tells me to get a new bios chip, or make a bootable floppy and reflash it. Also I think my problem has always been with the motherboard. I mean I used to always get these stop? errors, well problems where I replaced the graphics driver and it still doesn't fix it. So I THOUGHT it was interaction between the motherboard and the graphics driver, before I even knew what the bios did.

All the fixes say to update things.

It seems like it still works, just I need to make a new partition and reformat I guess. Bright SIDE is I have an updated bios even though it took around 2 days to get the computer to running speed again. Right? I mean really asking a question here, my bios still has that update information so I wouldnt need to ever do this again?Whose site? ?
What flash file ? ?

All we know is you are running XP and you flashed the BIOS and now things are wonked...I went to my motherboards manufacturers (MSI) website and they have this thing called MSI live update online. It appears to search your drivers and bios and then searches for updates for them.

I dunno about it though after I got my hard drive working again I decided to use it again to install the other updates I need, and more problems occured after installing updates for a ATI system driver. I.e computer wouldn't start up. I could start it up in safe mode, so I just did that and uninstalled the program.

Anyone know of any good programs that can do a good job at finding the most current needed updates for your computer if the problem is infact with the live update manager?I think you need to start over...

Remove the CMos battery for 10 minutes with the power unplugged.
Then install XP, SP2.
Then the MBoard drivers.

Before installing anything else check the system to see if things are stable.

If so install all your protection apps.

Then try the vid card.

I'm still not convinced the BIOS is healthy after that flash.I wont need to reflash it? Removing the battery would just reset the bios right? Because before everything sorta does seem stable. I mean I downloaded everything except a system driver which caused problems when I downloaded it.

Or what does this do exactly? Trying to learn about these problems incase they ever occure again. Maybe there is a book somewhere.

But I did remove the battery and I waited 10 minutes, but last night I already reformated and downloaded drivers etc thats all though should I rereformat and reredownload the drivers again? After I removed the battery and started up the computer it started up normally and my cmos changes stayed the same.Editing both your posts and the topic just LEADS to more confusion...is the machine running properly and are you sure you are installing the proper drivers ? ?

We still have no idea about the components of this machine except it's an MSI mainboard.Sorry I edited it yesterday the 7th post thing.

I don't mean to keep it secret it's just I dunno what you wanna know.
MB: MSI RS480M2
Graphics driver: Radeon X1300

Uh I think thats all thats pretty much all I been working with in upgrading/updating it.

Right not the machine is running fine, except I think the clock is running slow, not sure if it was just the time I removed the battery for or if its loosing milliseconds. Lastly I am downloading the drivers on the manufacturers site when searching for most recent ones.I was unable to find a BIOS flash for that board at MSI's site...

But i would replace that CMOS battery.

is like this i took my friend hardisk n wanted to copy his file form his hardisk to my. i have plug his hardisk to my ONE computer but can't find his desktop n when i go to his "my documet". then"E:\Documents and Settings" his own user named "XXXX" cannot go in it said "Access is denied" and "E:\Documents and Settings\XXXX is not accessible"You must log in as an Administrator. His drive cannot be compressed nor encrypted either. The correct path to his desktop would Documents and Settings/his user NAME/Desktop...
You may have to take ownership first...
SEE Here...still would WORK i just can in to his "E:\Documents and Settings\XXX" then cannot use the share... on the file "My desktop" n "My documet". i want 2 explain that i plug his hardisk into my one computer where i CANOT get in his file We understand. You plugged the hard drive into your MACHINE and it came from another machine. This is now called a slave drive. You are opening the 2nd drive and trying to read some files.

One of 3 things can be wrong.

1. The files are encrypted.

2. The files were compressed when they were in the other machine that you took the drive from.

If all you need is a file off of there why did he not just send it to you or put it on a USB drive ? ?

OK, you pulled the hdd from your friends machine. Put it back in and dont forget to set the jumper back to master. Then follow the link in patio's post

The correct path to his desktop would Documents and Settings/his user name/Desktop...
You may have to take ownership first...
See Here...

Also this is from the bottom of the Microsoft article which patio has in his post:

To take ownership of a file, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the file that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4. In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.

The administrator or the Administrators group now owns the file. To change the permissions on the files and folders under this folder, go to step 5.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Enter the object names to select (examples) list, type the user or group account that you want to give access to the file. For example, type Administrator. My advice is add Everyone when the "Select Users or Groups" dialog box comes up. Once you return the HDD to your friends box you must remove the Everyone or else it will be an easier target for malware and malicious hackers.
7. Click OK.
8. In the Group or user names list, click the account that you want, and then select the check boxes of the permissions that you want to assign that user.
9. When you are finished assigning permissions, click OK.He's been given this info above in my first reply...
I still believe this is not the full story so let's wait and see what he comes up with first...many thx. i love it

Solve : Word and capitalisation?

Answer»

This silly little problem is driving me nuts and I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to deal with it.

I am using MS Word on XP with an MS modern keyboard and the problem is that the program does not like me using capitals in the middle of a sentence. I take great care to depress the shift key and hold it down WHILST typing...I expect the result to be a Capital letter, but it frequently isn't...I have to try two or three times to PERSUADE it that this is what I want.

I have tried changing every setting I can find, but to no avail. This is the second keyboard I have had doing it so it is not a "Key" problem. What do I have to do to persuade Word that I know when I want a capital.

Cheers...DougUsing Word 2003 here and can't duplicate the problem. Yes, Word marks a word started with a capital letter in mid-sentence as a misspelled word but it still lets me type it. It accepts the typing without me having to repeat the keystrokes, as you are having to do.

What settings were you trying, ones under Tools, Options, under Tools, AutoCorrect Options, both of those, or something else?Hi, over the past few months I have tried every setting I can find...so many I can't remember! Word settings I am using at the moment suggest corrections by underlining in red - as NORMAL - but the capitalisation "corrections" are carried out without consultation.

I am writing a novel at the moment and constantly having to go back and insert capitals where I want them is driving me insane. I should say that my understanding of computer programs is minimal.

DougWith reference to Word 2003, if I go to Tools, Options, Spelling & Grammar, and clear the box for "Check grammar as you type", Word lets me type any number of capital letters within a sentence. Of course, the DOWNSIDE to this is that Word is not checking grammar in any way.

Have tried the above setting?Hi...no I hadn't actually tried that because I do find the normal spell and grammar checkers very useful...but I am off to give it a go right now. Thank you.Just been and checked my "Word" settings..."Check grammar as you type" was already CLEARED...I think I am just going to have to accept the fact and learn to live with it.

Thanks for trying...Regards...DougI can't think of any words with a capital letter in the middle. In case your normal.dot file is possibly corrupt, you might try this procedure for fixing Word's normal.dot file. See http://www.elamb.org/howto/normal-dot.htm

Solve : Motherboard and usb problems?

Answer»

Sure can use some help here.
Using a ESC L7VMM3 V3.0C motherboard, Win xp PRO sp2
80 gig hd C: 65 gig D: 14 gig duron 1.8 .
All is well? everything works ok, problem is all the usb PORTS WILL work with a keyboard,
mouse, camera,
BUT when a jump drive or external CD/dvd drive is plugged in xp says there may be a problem.
The drive does not show up in my computer, device manager just says device not recognized under usb.
The usb ports did recognize jump drives and hd sometime back, but cant THINK of what happened.
Have tried different hd, xp pro 2008 SP3 install. all updates for xp and m/b.
The root of the problem is that xp will not add a drive letter to the devices, the 80 gig has C: & D:
E: is the cd burner, have changed E: to O: in hopes of xp using the extra letters but on good.
Out of ideas now, any suggestions or help welcome.
Thank you

Solve : a "\system32\config\system" problem?

Answer»

I've run into a bit of a problem while trying to download music ... i'm going to assume that one of the files was infected and altered my system file in the \system32\config\ FOLDER.

Basically, when my computer starts I'm told that my 'system' file in the preceeding location is corrupt or deleted.

I checked through dos, and its still there, so its probably been altered somehow.

The message I get also tells me to use a WinXP cd to repair this file. I've used the cd I have and once I'm in the 'repair console' -thingy (forgot the exact name) it takes me to dos.

I'm not very good with dos, and there aren't any commands listed in the help function that seem to be about repairing files.

So I thought I'd install another copy of windows (the one I'm using now) to see if i could copy the \system32\config\system files into the previous copy, but that didn't WORK.

Now I'm most likely going to format my laptop, but there are important files on the previous version, (which I had password-protected so I can't access them through the 'documents and settings' folder).

Is there any way I can access those files through the new windows installation or any way I can repair the old installation? i doubt it would have been able to delete it anyway. what format were the files you downloaded? this doesn't sound like a problem you can get from that. it's usually pretty hard to get any problems from the typical music format...Heh don't remember actually. I'm assuming it was a music file, because I was downloading more of them at the time. It could've been a video file as well or a pdf.

Would knowing the type of file help with the problem ?Just an after-thought, I know the sytem files are still in the windows sub-directory, I've tried going through them and comparing them with tthe new ones I installed (cleverly called windows2).

I could post them, if that would help ...well assuming the file is what caused the problem, it might help to know the format. it may just be something else that was lingering somewhere on your hard drive without you knowing. .. i was gonna ask if formatting is a problem... but you said there are important files... are there no step by step instructions when you try to repair the file? i get them...I'm using the 'Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition: Serice Pack 2' cd that came with my laptop ... not sure if that's the RIGHT one to use .. but its all I have.

And once I'm in the blue screen with the option to install windows or repair, pressing repair (or 'r') takes me to the 'recover console', once there, it asks me which windows installation to use, et voila, i'm in dos.

Is there any way to directly edit the system file throught notepad or something and save it back into the \system32\... folder ? i wouldn't recommend it... try this link

i used this once and it helped meThe recovery console is not actually "DOS". Far from it.
yes that's one point that i found rather confusing... Quote from: reaper_tbs on JUNE 10, 2007, 03:13:44 PM

yes that's one point that i found rather confusing...

Some people seem to think that there is a word pronounced "doss" which just means "command prompt", whether it is MS-DOS, W95, W98, Me, NT, Win2k, XP, XP Recovery Console, or even the Bash prompt in Linux...

lol linux DOS... that's a scary thought...Insert your XP Home CD...

Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter

Let it run til it finishes and reboot.Heh yah, its the only way i could relate 'the black screen with commands'.

And reaper_tbs that site was EXACTLY what I needed, I'd hug you to show my gratitude, but I can hold it in

Thanks again.

Solve : Recovering a overwritten MS Word document.?

Answer»

I am using Word 2000 under XP and accidentally saved a blank PAGE instead of the one page of text I had been working on.
Is there any way I can recover or GET BACK the previous page before I saved the blank page. Has it been “saved” somewhere by Windows XP” or by Word?
I did not have the "Version" feature in operation.
Any help would be appreciated.
...... jcwbl
If you didn't save the page you were working on (the one with text), there's a strong possibility...it's gone.

If you open Word...and click File from the toolbar...EXPAND the menu...you should see the most recent documents you were working on. Word has an auto save feature that usually will save a document you are working on, but it usually asks you before it does this.

If you didn't save the file you were working on, or saved a blank document with the same file name, then it was overwritten and that document is history.

It's a good idea to name the documents you are working on and save them as you go along...just in case something LIKE this happens.

Solve : IRQ not less or Equal?

Answer»

This happens whenever i TRY to boot.

The blue screen will pop up when i see the XP boot screen (loading bar)

The error message is only "IRQ not less or EQUAL"

I've also swapped all my ram and still encounter the error.

Any ideas??Two things are trying to use the same IRQ. Have you installed any new hardware or updated any drivers? Can you get into safe mode? That's the problem, i've just returned from an oversea trip and my sister used the computer..

I've asked her but she said she didn't install any other things other than games.

As for the hardware SIDE, nope, no need additions.

I can't go into safe mode also, same error. If you can't get into safe mode, there's no easy FIX. One of those programs or games needs to be uninstalled. Maybe someone else can offer a different solution, but I'd get a knoppix disc to back up my files and reload the OS.

Oh, but first, from the safe mode screen, try "last known good configuration".That didn't work either..

Maybe someone else can help? Quote

IRQ not less or equal
Two most likely causes:
- overheating
- bad RAM

What exactly did you mean by "swapping" RAM?

Turn off computer. Open the case. Clean inside, using compressed air. Turn computer on. See, if all fans are running.remove all 4 sticks of ram and putting them in one by one, trying to pin point out the faulty ram (if there was any).

So far, all 4 sticks of ram will encounter the error.Try cleaning, and checking on fans. Quote from: jamesj2001 on July 25, 2008, 07:23:54 AM
Two things are trying to use the same IRQ.

misinformation. the error is caused when a Device driver calls a system function and specifies a IRQL (interrupt request Level) that is not less then or equal to the current IRQL. Thus the error. bad RAM causes this problem by causing Driver-level structures to become corrupted, such as structures that might be used to specify the IRQL parameter.

For the record- I've had this problem occur on my old AMD K6-2, for display drivers in 3d mode. My new computer, however, RAN them fine. I can only guess that the display drivers (being newer) attempt to use features of non-existent hardware on my K6, such as SSE or something, (how it translates into the IRQL error and not the INVALID_OPCODE error I cannot guess, likely to do with Ring 0 code).

I had the same thing happen to me a few days ago. Windows reinstall didn't help. I disabled reboot on error so I was able to see the error. I wrote it down on a notepad. The error said the same as yours but referred to a file RT2500.sys which is my wireless card driver. I did everything to get around it and nothing, cleaning dust out, testing ram and cpu temp, nada... Finally, I removed the driver and hardware from my computer and it hasn't shown up yet.

*NOTE* My wireless card was working for 3 years +. No software or hardware changes. The card just went to crap I guess. Only thing I can suspect is a service pack update?

Oh well, I'm up to 4.5MB down using a cat-5 cable now.

Moral, look for a file name in your error. Then google the filename, that is your clue what is happening.

The first time it happened, it showed me that file. After I re-formatted the file name didn't show.

I will write a blog with more details soon, PM me for the future URL.

Regards,
The blue screen contains no error msg, just IRQ not less or equal, no file name.

Checked the fans, and removed the dusts, still encounter the error
To me, it's rather hardware caused error, but there is nothing to lose by trying Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Solve : automatic startup??

Answer»

Is there any way in Windows XP to make it automatically start up in the morning before I get to work? No, not that I'm aware of.

Oh...can't you have one of the kids or hubby turn it on for you?

Alan <>< Because the on BUTTON on your computer is linked in with the power BOX inside your p.c there is no way you can have it automatticly turn onCheck your BIOS for Advanced Power Management settings, look for Power on by Alarm.I think there is an alarm program that will turn the computer on 3 minutes before the time you set it and then a selected music file will play then the alarm goes off.
I don't know what it's called or where to find it, sorry. No program can turn on the computer from a shutdown state. It is simply not possible because no programs can be loaded when the computer is powered off, only the BIOS would be able to do that.

You can wake a computer from standby on the other hand. Note your computer will need to support standby mode. Most newer computers should support it though.

Solve : XP won't load?

Answer»

Hi all,
I was on the internet today and Trend Micro popped up a SCREEN that said suspicious changes were detected. So I clicked on manage changes. Then a screen popped up that looked like a windows screen telling me to restart computer to correct any other changes. Not the exact wording but you get the idea.
Now my computer won't get past the screen that says Windows cannot start due to a possible hard WARE or software change. this is also the screen that gives the option to start in safe mode, last known good configuration and such.
I've tried all options and it always reboots to this screen.
I can however put in my back up drive and everything runs fine.
I'm stumped. Did I allow a virus to take over my computer? I think it RARE for a virus to have such control.
Can I get into the drive while using it as a SLAVE and correct the malicious changes? I don't even know where I would look other than somewhere in the registry.
I'm running XP with 2.4GH chip 2GIGS ram.
Thanks for any help,
BThis is a common occurance and is usually just random. happened to me a couple of weeks back becasue i forgot to shut down properly

if you have your os installation disc, it usually has a repair startup or something like that on it. that should fix most problems

and yeah the slave drive will work fine if you have a working os on it. this works with a dual boot too so if you dual booting you can boot the other os and recover files like a slave drive.

however to repair the quickest way is to use your os disc

hope this helps

Solve : Is Windows Repair option available in XP Pro??

Answer»

I have undertaken many efforts to repair XP Home Edition - some successful; some not. Last week, for the first time, I wanted to try the same THING with XP Pro, but could not find any option for repair - only re installation of the O/S. Perhaps one or more of the experts who are involved in this forum could advise whether I failed to see a path to repair of XP Pro; or, CONVERSELY, confirm whether this option is available in XP Pro.

Thanks very much.Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading through it to get familiar and printing out a reference copy...
Done properly all your APPS and data will remain intact.
Done improperly and your data and apps will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP.Patio:

Thanks for the response. I haven't had time to read thru all the reference materials and ASSOCIATED links - but I gather that, depending on the circumstances, the repair option may or may not show up in either XP Home or Pro. Guess I've just always been LUCKY that it showed up in XP Home.

The reason is that, you are using PIRATED version of windowsXP and the trial version of windows has expired and you didn't register the copy of windows. Try reinstalling windows from some other CD. Solve : Outlook Personal Folders?

Some how I managed to crete an entire NEW set of Personal folders in Outook that I do not want. I can't seem to delete them. I went into Outlooks help and was unable to delete them with the instuctions given. Delete folders was not in BOLD and wouldn't let me select it. Now when I download new email they are going to that new inbox. How can I get rid of that set of folders?what I would do is close Outlook. Then FIND your original .pst folder, right click on it and open with Outlook. That should open your original file. Then if you want to transfer your e-mail from your "new pst file", go to file - open and point to the new file. It should open in the sidebar of the outlook window. Then copy & paste or drag the e-mail over to the appropriate sections of your original. If its only one account, you can also go to Outlook into tools - e-mail accounts - change and you will see a drop down for setting the file in which you want your e-mail stored.I ENDED up just doing a restore and it WORKED. Thanks for your reply though.
