Solve : Run ftp command using bat file.?

Answer»

I write a bat file to ftp to a server & copy some files to another location using GET COMMAND. For example I want to get this file ABCddmmyy.txt. ABCD part of the file should be fix & only the ddmmyy.txt part is a variable. SAMPLE of what I want is as follows.

ftp get ABCDddmmyy.txt

My codes are as follows.

@echo off
echo Date: %Day% Time: %time%
echo. Loading ......
h:
CD testapp1

ftp -s:i:\scdev.bin

SCDEV.bin file is as follow

open ultestapp1
user
password
bye

Well...keep all your file information as a variable, as well as what command
you want.

Set c1=FIRST COMMAND
Set c2=SECOND COMMAND
...
echo %c1% > ftplogin.txt
echo %c2% >> ftplogin.txt
echo %c3% >> ftplogin.txt
echo %c4%(this would be the GET command) >> ftplogin.txt
echo %c5% >> ftplogin.txt

You have to modify it to suit your needs, but it will WORK. Quote from: Helpmeh on October 16, 2009, 04:30:12 AM

Solve : OE spell check?

Answer»

Whenever I use the spell check on Outlook Express, it OPENS up to a box trying to send me to Microsoft "Picture It". Could it have SOMETHING to do with me updating to Microsoft Office 2007? How can I REDIRECT the spell check to the proper function? Any ideas would be appreciated.I haven't used OE for a couple of years, and it may have been updated, but it didn't used to have spell check built into it. It used the spell check in Word. If you didn't have Word spell check in OE didn't work.

Instead of picture it try to redirect it to Word.Quote from: kepontrukn on October 17, 2009, 12:21:45 PM

So I got a windows xp cd that came with a dell and tried to use it to recover my computer but I did not know what the administrator password was. After 3 times the thing WOULD not let me try again so I tryed to REINSTALL it and it ENDED up in my D drive. I need to REMOVE it from my D drive because of lack of space but that is not working . How can I get my laptop back in action? Is it possible to use the windows xp program that came with a dell laptop for my hp?

Solve : Add/Remove Program?

Answer»

I have a question, hoping someone might be able to help me with. I received an old computer from my grandfather and am working on cleaning it out. It is an Compaq Presario SR 1511RX running Windows XP SP 2. I reinstalled windows because it was having some major problems then went about tearing out the DEFAULT programs using the ADD/Remove Program utility in the control panel. When I had most of the junk out, I stopped to add AVG. When I ran that installer, it told me I needed to remove Norton's from the computer. I went back to Add/Remove and the button to remove all of the programs were no longer there. http://docs.google.com/View?id=dxmz2sk_60ghk4j2hr
Any ideas as to what happened and how I can GET the utility back? ThanksHello

Solve : XP home + Media Player 11 + Administrator?

Answer»

My wife's computer is a DELL Insperon 530s with a Pentium Dual Core 1.6 GHz E2140 Processor, 250 GB SATA II Hard Drive and 2GB DDR2 SDRAM. It came with XP Home installed.

The software is up to date, and has all published updates installed. It is used in our home, and she is the Computer Administrator. She is listed as the administrator on the User ACCOUNTS screen. I have also verified that she is the administrator by following Microsoft's instructions and running "timedate.cpl". Microsoft says that if the clock opens, which it did, you are the administrator.

Among the installed updates is Media PLAYER 11, with several updates to the player.

But, Media Player 11 cannot be opened. No matter what method I use to try to open it, I always get the same warning screen that tells me "to FINISH installing Windows Media Player, restart your computer and then log on as an administrator".

I am at a loss as to what to do. My wife is the administrator, and I don't know how to log on again as the administrator to complete the player installation.

Or is there something that I am missing.

Thanks.

0708Try downloading Media Player 10 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/default.aspx. Then, you should be able to use the program or reinstall Media Player 11 if you so desire through Windows updates. If that doesn't work, you may need to restore you machine to original factory defaults since there could be some operating system corruption.Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it, then download and install a fresh copy.Download the fresh copy of windows media player 11 (genuine) and install it. If it asks you to restart and logon as administrator, here is some trick.

Restart your computer and whenever the logon screen appears press CTRL+ALT+Delete
then a logon window appears. In the USERNAME type "administrator" (without quotes) and press enter (If you don't has administrator password set at the time of installing os it will work). Now you are the administrator and you can install the software. Be sure that no administrator password is set.
Thanks to all of you for your advise. After more time than I can imagine, and running more Microsoft programs proving that my wife was the Administrator, I still could not resolve this issue.

So I took the easy way out and following Microsoft's instructions, I rolled back to Media Player 10, and blocked further updates to MP 11. MP 10 works.

Solve : How can I suddenly lose my admin rights??

Answer»

Basically I cannot access my Folder Options via the Tools TAB. All I get now is 3 options about Synchronizing and Network Drives but I USED to always be able to reach my Folder Options.

I got some help from Yahoo that said to Run "regedit" but I cannot because it says I don't have the rights to, only the Administrator. I tried hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager but it says it has been disabled by my Administrator.

Now... I'm the only one who uses this PC. I don't have multiple accounts on it, only the main one I've been using for years now that doesn't even require logging on, it just opens automatically. I haven't changed any settings lately at all. I have no *censored* idea how this came to be. Solve : I re-installed XP?

Answer»

I'm back. The DATA on my E drive was lost DUE to formatting but I was able to recover some of it using the program you advised. My next question is: Now that I have a working copy of XP on my C drive and all my data files backed up on my E drive, should I physically DISCONNECT my E drive and keep it detached until I need to add more files and/or retrieve corrupted files?
Once again, THANK you so much for your help. Not really...if you are planning on using it it should be hooked up...
Burn whatever data you SAVED from it and anything else that's left from it....format it again to make sure it's clean and put it to use.

Solve : Backing up PC?

Window XP

I remember there used to be a backup tool in Systems TOOLS, what happened to it? Is there a way I can resurrect it? Thanks.Does this happen to be a Windows XP HOME EDITION?Well you're offline now but I would like to add this (if it is Windows Home):

Windows XP Home does not install the Backup Utility by default.
To install, look here: http://www.tunexp.com/tips/maintain_your_computer/manually_install_backup_in_windows_xp_home_edition/I had ( still do) XP home, Emachines t6528, its had the 'NT backup'tool on it, but when I bought a fresh copy of home.. It didnt have it. So i just copy'd it from the recovery CDI wouldn't rely on Windows backup...you may be severely dissappointed and at that time it's usually too late.
I use and recommend Acronis True Image but there are others such as Ghost and also some freeware choices available at majorgeeks.comQuote from: patio on October 06, 2008, 05:44:27 PM

Solve : Windows 3.11?

Answer»

I have an old Gateway 286 computer, my first. I am wanting to RESTORE it to original for nostalgic reasons but my original widows disks have been lost.

Does ANYONE have the original Microsoft Windows 3.11 operating system installation diskettes?your best bet is ebay

Mmmmmm.....Windows 3.1.......EbayYou can download a huge file and create the floppy discs
To been very nostalgic, do it on the old 5 1/4 disks!
for a download SITE, just Google it. Download a huge file from where?DOWNLOADING Windows 3.1 from anywhere would be ILLEGAL. Please don't suggest that again.

Nerdherder, your best bet would be to try eBay.Make sure you get the original Windows 3.11 and not Windows 3.11 For Workgroups because that will only run in 386 enhanced mode, and you can't (obviously!) do that on a 80286 processor. For a 286 I would run FreeDos with a copy of Gem for a GUI when I want it. FreeDos has alot more modern support for hardware, networking, etc. All DOS programs work on it, uses almost no memory with mouse support.
Gem is a GUI like windows that run does programs and a bunch of great programs made for it. It runs great on a 286 and has alot more moderm support in drivers then 3.11

Solve : Gateway with XP start up/recovery problems?

Answer»

Well first of all this is my first post and let me say I wish I would have found this site well before now. It appears as there are lots of helpful PEOPLE who are willing to donate their time to help other people and that is awesome!

Now to the problem. I have a Gateway laptop purchased in 2005. It has Windows XP with SP 2 I believe. Its had some problems due to spending most of it's life in Iraq when I was overseas. I took it to Bestbuy as I purchased a warranty and they installed a new motherboard, screen, keyboard, and a few other things. So they basically gave me a new computer.

One day it DIED and would not turn back on. I used the system recovery that is on the machine (F11) and got it back up and running. It worked fine for several months and now im back to the same problem. However now after I used the system recovery (the one where it does not erase your data) it starts and goes into disk checking then into setup. It says setup is not complete and restarts. The first time it said a windows file was corrupt and setup couldn't be completed.

It will not start in safe mode due to setup not working in safe mode.
Sorry for the long post and I appreciate any answers.First off Welcome Aboard ! !
If you can determine the manuf. of the hard drive i would suggest DLoading and running their Free diagnostics on that hard drive...
Sometimes it will be shown in Device Manager if you right clik the listed HDD and select Properties.
The diagnostics file will be used to create a bootable CD...you may have to do this on another machine.
Run the long test overnite and post back with the results.
The less you USE the drive right now the better if we want to save your data but is sounding like a drive problem so let's start there...Thanks for the response..
The computer won't get past start up when it tries to run the set up as it was recently recovered. I can get to the bios settings though. Would i be able to determine the manufacturer of the hard drive from there?
By the way when I try running from last known configuration that worked i get the message: cannot run due to the following file being corrupt
\window\system32\config\system

Another QUESTION, i don't have the original windows CD that came with the computer but I read on here that if i had one i would be able to repair the files? where could i get a windows CD? EBay? i am guessing i would NEED an authentic one with a COAYou can simply borrow a XP CD as long as the version and Service packs match to facilitate a repair....I.E. if you are running XP Pro with Service Pack2 that's the CD you will need.
XPHome will not repair XPPro and vice versa...

Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru to become familiar paying special attention to the warnings and then printing out a reference copy...
Done correctly all your Programs and Data will be intact...done incorrectly your stuff is gone but you will wind up with a clean install of XP.

In answer to your other question some BIOS's will report what manuf. the HDD is ...
Let us know.

Solve : windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt - M45 S359 won't reboot from C?

Answer»

windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set-up using the original set up CD-ROM...

this is what I get when I open my toshiba M45 S359 using windows XP...
nothing works anymore !
F8 + safe mode is INOPERATIVE, and I can't access the recovery console.
I do not have an original set up CD-ROM and no windows XP disk either. I do have a toshiba recovery and applications/drivers DVD.
here is what I did so far (following excellent advices)...
- download the Recovery Console.iso : http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
- burn it to CD with CDBurnerXP
- insert it into the Toshiba and try to boot from the CD after changing the BIOS boot order so that the CD drive is listed first

it appears that the laptop REFUSES to reboot from the CD even if I tweak the boot order.
it does reboot normally and then gives me back the windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt...
the cd boot works fine on my working destop computer.

if anybody has an helpful advice it would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to recover some important pictures files from the laptop...

thanks !

my best, francis.
Welcome to the CH forums.

The error message indicates that the XP Registry is corrupt. You will need a genuine version of the XP cd. MS kb307545 is the reference.

To recover CRITICAL files can you remove the hdd and install it on another pc?

hey im having the same exact problem and i have the same laptop as you..i have the orgininal recovery cd that came with the toshiba laptop but it still doesnt work.. i keep getting the screen that asks me to run windows in safe mode or last known working configuration etc..ive TRIED to press C like the cd says but it doesnt work..i tried to change the bios to boot cd but it doesnt work...i tried to get into MS Dos mode but it doesnt let me..basically nothing is working..im thinking about taking my laptop to a computer repair place but that would be last resort..ill keep you updated if i figure it out please let me know if you fix it as well..thanks

Please, start your own topic.i already have my own topic and had before i found this one..just wanted to let him know im in same situationOK.so here I am again...

I may access every files from it on my desktop computer except the "documents and settings" folder for which "access is denied" !!!

Solve : Boosting Sound output when recording.?

Answer»

Dear Everyone.

I'm not using a mike, I'm writing music using the built-in Windows SOUNDS. I emphasize this to show I've tried that mike +20decibels setting and it doesn't make a difference. (I wish!!)

My computer has an Asrock motherboard with an AMD Sempron processor, 1gb RAM, an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Soundcard and about 200gig hard drive space. I output sound through a Bang and Olufsen Hi-fi system.

I use a notation program, Voyetra Music Write, to create the MIDI file. I have the volume up full when I'm writing the piece, because I want the sounds to stay soft-sounding. I have ATTACK/Velocity at a maximum of 60 per sound, Volume on each sound at roughly 100.

When I've finished the piece, I use WavePad to RECORD it as a sound file.

Now at this point the soundfile sounds great, it's just far too quiet. If I use GAIN to boost the volume in Wavepad, it loses clarity. It gets louder, it just sounds fuzzy, like you're listening through velvet. If I DON'T use gain and put the amplifier volume levels to normal, by which I MEAN the levels you'd listen to a downloaded MP3 on, it's so quiet you can hardly hear anything. Yet MP3s/CDs/DVDs sound fine on normal volume settings!

What do I use to boost the volume without getting fuzziness? And why are the sounds so quiet? I mean, 127's top volume, right? And I'm using about 100 with everything, so you'd think everything would be on nearly top volume. But it's FAR quieter than an MP3. If I put the notation package settings on 127 volume, it's STILL far, far too quiet on normal amp vol levels and that's max settings! (I know I can up velocity settings, but that wrecks the softness of the sounds).

Imagine a track created in Reason or something similar (so there's no mikes involved). HOW are they getting it to sound loud at normal volume levels without sounding fuzzy or DISTORTED? I know I'm just using the Windows sounds, but surely there's a way to make them sound loud on normal volume?

Yours hopefully

ulrichburkeAre you using the downloaded trial version of wavepad or the purchased version?

Have you tried using another sound editor?

FBI use an old version of Sound Forge - I think now it is Sony software.

This allows me not only a lot of tools but a very good volume adjustment tool - up or down and seemingly with no losses or distortions I have detected. Plus very useful graphic, parametric EQ options.

My suggestion would be to consider TRYING something like this so as to make the best of your work - and of course record thru Sound Forge in first place too - keep the work entirely within that app.Quote

very good volume adjustment tool - up or down

Solve : HELP!!! PLEASE!!!?

Answer»

I was updating my Windows XP with the service pack3 when i tried to cancel it half way through. When i hit "cancel" my computer froze so i shut it off (not properly). Now when i try to start my computer it starts to the point where the Windows XP logo comes up then it shuts down and restarts again (it does this over and over again until i shut it off). It does give me the option of starting in safe mode, or to the last good config, but either one doesn't work. I even did the F8 thing and tried all of those options, but still nothing.

If anyone out there can help me i would be sooo grateful!!
I do have my XP CD and tried putting it in but it doesn't do anything, is this a lost cause?Right click on My Computer, click Properties, select Advanced, select Startup and recovery and de-select Automatically restart and click ok, ok. The next time you restart your computer it should show you an error code. Please post all of that error here.seriously!!! MY COMPUTER WILL NOT START UP!!! WHEN I TURN IT ON IT NEVER GOES ANY FURTHER THAN THE WINDOWS LOGO THEN IT RESTARTS, NO MATTER WHAT MODE I START IT IN IT KEEPS SHUTTING DOWN AND RESTARTING, THERE IS NO WAY FOR ME TO GET TO THE "MY COMPUTER" ICON OR ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES TO GET PASSED THE WINDOWS LOGO SCREEN AT START UPStop shouting in All Caps and try the procedure above in safe mode...
It's not our fault you are having issues...your right its not "your" fault i am having issues but it is "your" fault that you come on a computer help SITE and dont help!! if you were here to help then you would read, i clearly wrote that my computer doesnt start up even when i try safe mode, making it impossible to try the earlier stated "help" blog. The sad thing here is that i just went to Office Depot yesterday and talked to one of the cashiers and they TOLD me to try something that worked perfectly and now my computer works!!! so i am GOING to repost what i was told so someone on this site can get some real help!!
-While computer is starting up hit either "delete" or "F1" to enter set up mode.
-select option for "BIOS" settings
-make sure your "CD" drive is first to boot
-restart your computer with your windows install CD
-your computer will read the CD and take you into install/set up
-follow the prompts and you have a WORKING computer again!!
***note that this only works if you have your windows installation CD***

So, even though you installed IE7, you still get an error with IE6?Well no error anymore but should you or not have both? You saw my above attachment.
I go to sys. tools, sys. information and the version says 5.1.2600

so what's the deal where is IE7This prompt came up

I am really confused. No confirmation except that prompt. The whole Internet Explorer Interface should look different.
Also, you can see what version you have under Help --> About.

Solve : Reboot Loop Win XP Pro AND Advanced Options freeze?

Answer»

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and I am trying to desperately find help. I hope this isn't a graveyard forum where PEOPLE don't post after forever...

I have Windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 8400. It was working absolutely fine for months after I replaced the HDD but somehow when it turned on today, it keeps rebooting after the DELL screen disappears. Furthermore, when PRESSING F8 to get into the "Advanced Options Menu", selecting any of the options and pressing enter causes the system to freeze.

The only thing I have changed recently was my encryption on my wireless network, from WEP to WPA2. I don't know if this would have anything to do with it but it could.

Please help!Quote

Just to be sure, how long does it freeze and where exactly does it freeze?

I suggest also try turning off your Wireless Card and see what happens when you try to boot.

One more question, do you have the Windows CD?Thank you for the reply.

Since you've shown interest I'll provide an update. I opened the computer up and took out the motherboard battery (to reset CMOS) and put it back in. The computer no longer is caught in a boot loop but will not boot into windows in any way. Safe MODE, Debug Mode, and Regular (or last known). It actually FREEZES upon selection.

Of course, I don't have the windows CD.

I'll try the wireless thing card thing next.

Solve : computer dosen't read audio device?

Answer»

Is this a custom build...or a retail machine?

Anyway...are you sure the correct DRIVER for the motherboard was installed?

Also check the BIOS settings and make sure you have it configured to recognize any plug and play devices.

While XP should recognize the device...there are still other FACTORS to take into consideration here.I'm sure it's the correct driver, it's an alienware

how do I check the bios settings?Did it work fine before?
If so,it's no need to check the BIOS(or CMOS settings)
What model Alienware?don't remember the model

it did work fine beforeThen...if it was working before...and now there's no device showing up in Device Manager...

I'll have to agree with WHATWAS previously stated...possibly a failed audio chip.

Not that the motherboard is bad, however, a new sound card will solve your problem.Quote from: patio on August 19, 2008, 12:59:49 PM

You may need to buy a sound card...it looks like the onboard chip has failed.

Also this issue needs to be addressed ASAP:

Solve : Help: Weird Hard Drive Problem.?

Answer»

Hi all,

Well, the dreaded happened, one of my drives has carked it. A 160GB Samsung which has been running just fine, SMART indicators all within normal operating ranges. One morning windows didn't boot up properly, it just hung on "Windows is starting up" I forced a reboot and when I logged in my 160GB drive which I use for game/music/movie storage is there but it is unformatted and marked as RAW. When I try to open it Windows informs me it is corrupt and unreadable.

One thing to NOTE, this drive was formatted as a dynamic disk, no good reason why, I was just a noob when I set it up and didn't know what I was doing. I haven't ever got around to reformatting it into basic.

Anyway, my data is all gone, a quick scan with Easy Recovery leads me to believe I can probably get most of it back. What I really want to ask here is how on earth this happened?!? I believe the hardware is still more or less ok, if SMART is anything to go by, but a quick perusal of the event log is where things start to get ugly.

The event log shows me approximately 1000 dmio "information", "warning", and "error" messages. Should I have seen these sooner? Maybe, but they only go back 14 days and I don't obsessively check the log every week. As an aside it is very irritating that critical drive failure information like this is hidden from the user, I would have liked to be alerted by the OS personally.

Anyway, my question is what are dmio warnings/information/errors? I will copy a couple of the relevant messages in here and I would really like some help trying to understand what these mean. As far as I can tell they are "BAD" but what are they about? Do they indicate file system, software, or hardware failure? Could it be a faulty cable or controller? Could it be the motherboard? Or is it most likely just the end of the road for this drive?

Note that although the message changes from harddisk1 to harddisk2 I'm 99% sure they are the same disk, I swapped it to another SATA controller at one point.

First Error (Two Weeks Ago):
Source: dmio
Category: none
Event ID: 30
Type: information

Description:
dmio: Harddisk2 write error at block 312581807: status 0xc0000010

These errors spam a considerable amount of the log over the next 8-9 days with the same block and status numbers until we get this one:

Source: dmio
Category: none
Event ID: 30
Type: Information

Description:
dmio: Harddisk1 write error at block 6160447: status 0xc0000185

Simultaneously with this error these other two occurred:
Source: dmio
Category: disk
Event ID: 57
Type: warning

Description:
The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Source: dmio
Category: none
Event ID: 37
Type: warning

Description:
dmio: Disk Harddisk1 block 6160447 (mountpoint H:): Uncorrectable write error

These errors continue for the the remaining days, dmio warnings mixed with dmio infomation messages, until the drive fails. They are a mixture of write errors and read errors and occur at several different blocks, new ones come up occasionally.

I really do wish Windows had told me this was happening instead of silently filling the event log, oh well. Anyway, can any of you WIZARDS help me diagnose this situation?

System:
Windows XP SP2
CPU: AMD 3400+
GPU: Nvidia 6800GS
RAM: 1GB Generic
Motherboard: Albatron K8X800 Pro II V2.0
Chipset: VIA K8T800/8237
I am a gamer and so keep all my drivers constantly up to date.

EDIT: Could this problem be related to dynamic disks as this might imply? I also found this but I do not really understand it, also the message is a little different. The drive was failing and the warnings were there...
I've had drives as new as 2 weeks fail on me...the age of the drive is irrelevant...
As far as it showibg up RAW this MOSTLY only happens to external/USB drives that are powered down/unplugged prematurely...

There may be nothing wrong witht the drive itself...i'd suggest DLoading and running the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site to be sure...Yes, I think it is just stuffed really.

What I mean about the warning being hidden is that although it was in the event log many people might not look there until too late. For something like this I would have liked Windows to give me a popup window on startup or something saying "hey your drive is getting >1000 read/write errors, thought you might like to know".

Thanks for your reply anyway, time to start data recovery.Best of Luck...

Solve : XP Will not load, Volume is Dirty, CHKDSK stalls (Dell XPS 400 Desktop)?

Answer»

My Dell XPS 400 desktop PC with Windows XP (all available updates are installed), will not boot and I am out of options. After the loading screen, it goes to a BLUE screen (not BSOD, but it may be) and says the volume is dirty and automatically runs a CHKDSK. It FAILS during step 2 (verifying indexes). Here are the other things I have tried:

-Booting from CD to repair install windows XP, stalls at 25%
-Tried recovery console, chkdsk will not work there either
-Tried to boot in safe mode, did not work, now I am not even given that option.

I only want to get files off of this hard drive but am out of ideas. I have a new Dell XPS M1330 laptop with Vista. Is there a way to hook my PC hard drive to my laptop and access files, or can I purchase a new internal hard drive for the PC, install windows on it, and access my files that way, without having to load windows on my currently jacked-up hdd? I have exhausted my computing skills and am stuck. Please help. My guess would be that HDD is failing...

STOP using it immediately.
Remove it from the dead machine and hook it up as a slave drive on the working machine.
Don't try and burn your important DATA...copy it to the good machine's drive...you can always burn the data later.

Jumper diagrams will be on top of the HDD otherwise visit the drive manuf. site...

Best of Luck !That is what I figured. I just need to go purchase a new HDD. I got a reply from another post on another site that said I could boot Knoppix program (LINUX) from a CD and access the files on my hard drive, then transfer them to an external USB drive (which I have). Can you SPEAK to this?

Solve : Large font won't go away?

Answer»

Last night while PLAYING a game the game went black, I exited using crtl alt Del and all my fonts were large, tried restarting my game and it wouldn't work so I shut off my computer. Then when I tried to turn it back on it just kept showing a black screen with a flashing WAITING for text cursor though I couldn't type anything in. Finally after turning off and on several times it showed the blue screen with several options and by chance I restarted windows. Now everything is still in huge font and only half my wallpaper is showing. I tried left clicking going to display properties and apperance to make font normal but it is still huge any other ideas??Post the blue screen error message along with some info on the system; OS any new hardware/software installed recently and someone will be along shortly to assist...The blue screen didn't have an error message -I should know how to explain it better but it's the screen that pops up when first starting your computer that gives you the f10 system recovery boot menu and ne other option. My computeris a HP Pavillion m7050e and it runs on microsoft xp.oh and no new stuff installed anytime within the last couple months but my toddler SOMETIMES hits keys on the keyboard, in fact he hit some button that made my start taskbar go vertical instead of horizontal and I have no IDEA how to get that back either. Anyhow he was in bed when the font thing happened so I guess I can't blame him!!As far as the Taskbar simply left click it with the mouse and drag it to the position you want....
Larger Fonts indicate he may have also changed your video resolution...right clik an empty space on the desktop and select Properties....choose 1024 X 768 for starters...
Re-boot and see if things are as normal as they should be...
If not try a few other resolutions...TY TY TY TY-I knew it had to be something simple and you saved me a lot of trouble not taking it in over something that small!!!!You're more than Welcome...

Stop by anytime.

Solve : Help with Shortcuts?

Answer»

I would LIKE some help with shortcuts used in USB drives (ie portable).

I am trying to create a shortcut that points to a file like drive:\folder\file.exe - where the "drive" is the drive letter of the USB Drive letter assigned by Windows when it is plugged in. That is, point to a file on the USB Drive itself.
This works fine until I PLUG the USB Drive into another computer where the drive letter of the USB Drive is assigned a different letter to the original.

I don't know if this is possible using Windows Shortcuts but there is a way to do this with a batch file.I should have thought of it.
Thanks a lot.In case you want the code, here:

start "" "%cd:~0,1%:\Path\To\File.exe"Not sure if you're interested, but you COULD use Disk Management to manually set a default letter for your drive. So, if you WANTED to use the letter X, you could set your drive to that. Then whenever you plug your drive into another computer, it should AUTOMATICALLY open up as drive X.

Solve : Questions about Memory?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm using Windows XP. I installed 3 GB of ram in dual channel mode (2x512 + 2x1GB), but windows only recognizes 2.5 GB of it. I researched some and came to the conclusion that the max memory it can handle is 4GB, and other devices take some of the remaining address to handle their memory etc. (I have a 512 MB Graphics Card)

-Can this be fixed so all 3GB is used by Windows? If not, is my memory still operating in Dual Channel mode? CPU-Z correctly recognizes both memory and says it's in Dual Channel mode.

The second question is about Virtual Memory.

1. Do I really need it? In class I learned that if you do have virtual memory, the computer ships all the useless info in memory to it, and focusses on the main program/task at hand, such as a game.

2. At the same time, I realize that it can take a LONG time to access the virtual memory, and I do notice skips when I'm gaming a lot.

3. Currently virtual memory is at 2GB on all drives. If I take the virtual memory out, while it improve gaming PERFORMANCE? Since the processor doesn't need to stall to handle virtual memory?

Thanks & God Bless

-SurajRemove one of the 512 sticks....
As far as virtual memory accessing it is not actually slow....i wouldn't suggest disabling it.Quote from: patio on August 04, 2008, 02:32:40 PM

Remove one of the 512 sticks....
As far as virtual memory accessing it is not actually slow....i wouldn't suggest disabling it.

Could you explain in a little more detail? If I removed one of the 512 sticks, it wouldn't be in dual channel mode any longer. Will the 2x1GB still be in dual channel mode?

Thanks for the heads up on virtual memory - would more virtual memory improve performance?bump!

Also, is there an EASY way to upgrade to XP 64 BIT? My processor can handle it. That way I'm ASSUMING I can use more RAM - I'd like to use 4GB of DDR ram, as it is cheap right now.

Thanks & God BlessSome more info:

Is it better to set the ram to 200MHz?

Thanks & God BlessOverclocked RAM can become unstable....

What is it you want to accomplish here ? ?Quote from: patio on August 18, 2008, 09:00:54 PM
Overclocked RAM can become unstable....

What is it you want to accomplish here ? ?

None of it is overclocked. The RAM COMES at 200MHz, but I currently set it at 166MHz - the question is whether 200MHz is better - cpu-z stats say otherwise.

The main question is - is there an easy way to upgrade to XP 64 bit? My processor is a 64bit processor. That way I'm assuming I can use more RAM - I'd like to use 4GB of DDR ram, as it is cheap right now.

Right now windows only detects 2.5 GB, as can be seen in the screenshot ;p

Thanks for the help.

It's ok to not have Windows installed on the other Hard Disk.

If it is connected properly, you should be able to access it in My Computer.Another way to put it - just treat disk #2 as a repository for WHATEVER data you want - depending on size tho may well be worth patitioning into two or three logical drives to help with ORGANIZATION.

Solve : how do i clear dustbunnies and such?

Answer»

Ive got two computers on which the fan runs every so often. This is what prompted me to open the case and look inside. Lots of dust bunnies in both the desktop and laptop

On the laptop but Im assuming an accumulation of dust is making the cooling of the fan innefficient and thats why it turns on so often.

What is the best way to get all the dustbunnies out?Look here and here..

Good luckI forgot we have explanatory THREADS but - my approach is .........

I find careful USE of compressed air does the trick - use a compressor if you have one and set output pressure to something quite MODEST and fit a nozzle gun - 15 to 20 psi MAY well be enough... otherwise get a can of compressed air or nitrogen gas.

If care is used then a fine camel hair brush (like for photo lens cleaning) can also help before using air - just to losen dust accumulations.... this can certainly help on fan blades ... make sure tho best you can that what is blown out goes away and not into other areas ... best done outside really.

CPU HEAT sink fins can also get well filled with a sorta greasy dust and those too need carefully cleaned to aid cooling air. Do everything with care!i wouldnt use the photolense brush thing for anything then fans though and the heatsink Quote from: computeruler on August 18, 2008, 07:39:30 PM

Solve : FTP Scripting?

Answer»

I wrote a UNIX SHELL SCRIPT to push text data files from UNIX server to the windows batch server.
I have learned that I have to write the script on the windows batch server and pull the files down.

My UNIX script reads the files in the directory, creates an INVENTORY file containing the file names in the source directory, then passes the file names from the from the inventory file to the ftp script to push the files to windows server, then goes back and cleans up the source directory based on the inventory file.

I need a windows script to do the same.

I am a UNIX person with LITTLE windows experience.

Note, new files are written to the UNIX source directory every two minutes, for that reason I created the inventory file. The new files are coming in before the ftp session is completed. I want to make sure I don’t push the same file twice or remove the WRONG file.

Any suggestions?

Solve : Why does font installation take so long??

Answer» HELLO. I came here because I need help. I wanted to install a new font that I made with Fontifier using my own handwriting, and I know how to install a font because I read it in the Help section of the Fonts folder. The problem is that this morning, around 9:00 AM, I was installing my new font and it was 10:30 AM, and the font still hadn't finished installing. I saved the font on my DOCUMENTS folder when I downloaded it from Fontifier because I didn't want to compromise the computer by installing it on the wrong folder. Could that be the problem??

Not sure what's going on but - how does your new HOME made font finish up? Is it a .TTF or any other type? Oh and - is this a complete font set - A thru Z and numbers?

I use a very old free prog called "The Font Thing" - mainly cos it allows for easy visuals on fonts but - also - it's a breeze installing or uninstalling fonts.

I seem to recall a useful small app from the past for font making/editing ... Fontographer ........ just throwing that in for good measure!Quote from: ChrisXPPro on August 17, 2008, 06:09:14 PM

Yes, it is a .TTF. Yes, it's a complete font set.

I use a very old free prog called "The Font Thing" - mainly cos it allows for easy visuals on fonts but - also - it's a breeze installing or uninstalling fonts.

I will try that, but as far as I know, the Fontifier is the easiest way to make a font. I have tried other programs like the FontStruct, and they're a drag because I have to deal with grids and dots and literally have to draw the font out, which, on the computer, with the mouse, it's impossible for me to do and have it come out right.

I seem to recall a useful small app from the past for font making/editing ... Fontographer ........ just throwing that in for good measure!

I will try that, too! THANK you for the help and the suggestions! I will try to install the font the way that I did it today while I take my nephew and my niece to school, and if it hasn't installed by the time I come back, then I will try those font makers you gave me.

The Font Thing - is just a font manager but - IMO does make it easier to see what you have and what to install or uninstall.

Could well be that Fontographer is using your not so popular grid of dots - long time since I used it .... but I seem to remember there are some other font app's 'out there' - and maybe even some open source such as on sourceforge.net.

Anyways yeah - try it again but it does seem very odd that installing that new font should take long at all. I wonder if the file is ''seen'' as what it is supposed be, a TTF. Good luck anyways.Quote from: ChrisXPPro on August 17, 2008, 07:37:55 PM

Solve : Is it safe to remove these files??

Answer»

(XP SP2)

Last week I trustingly ALLOWED Microsoft to install XP Service Pack 3 on my computer. Well, I should have looked before I leapt. Before you install it, check here:

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2010&SiteID=17

More PROBLEMS getting it off. Once off, Disk Defrag wouldn't work...

During all this I did System Restore, undid System Restore, redid System Restore, a nightmare.

As a result of al this I have dozens and dozens of "files have been renamed to preserve their contents", such as alg(2).exe, alrsvc(2).dll. I even have a few with (2)(2). For each such file, there is a CORRESPONDING alg.exe, alrsvc.dll.

Is it okay to delete these files?I KNOW what you're talking about.

I've had the same thing happen to me when I installed a game called Phun.

Whenever I did a System Restore, it would keep the original Phun files, but a copy of them on the desktop as well (with (2) at the end of their filename).

It just means the files with a (2) are the most recent files. File without the (2) are files the computer restored.

I think it is ok to delete them, but I would keep them in your recycling bin for a few days to make sure everything is running properly.

All those cannot be downloaded??

Ok. Any suggestions on how I can stop Windows Update from continually trying to download them? Aside from turning updates off. That was a question.

Are you saying that they cannot be installed into Windows?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 18, 2008, 07:10:55 AM
That was a question.

Are you saying that they cannot be installed into Windows?

Sorry, I missread your POST. Correct they will not install into windows. When I click to install, the dialog box comes up saying that the downloads did not install. When I click close, Windows starts downloading them again. This process just keeps repeating itself.Does this happen to be a real copy of Windows XP or a fake copy?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 18, 2008, 07:19:54 AM

I just recently had this computer built. I took the original XP-PRO disk to the builder and I asume that he used it. This was a legal Microsoft disc that I purchased.I found this here:

Solve : I disabled my usb.?

Answer» First off, let me state that I am not posting on the problem machine, this is an alternate computer.

I will let you KNOW about the history of the hardware; A few months ago my pci-e video card had blown some resistors, it has also blown the usb / ps2 ports on the back of my pc. The machine now REMAINS with 3 USB ports on front to work with, one for mouse, keyboard and one extra.

I have recently acquired a PSP, and I have not come to a conclusion why the pc would not recognize the device, I had heard a certain REASON may be a USB 2.0 / 1.1 issue and I should disable my 2.0 ports, allowing them to return to 1.1. However, this disabled all my ports.

I cannot use mouse or keyboard in windows, however, I can use bios.
I have taken the CMOS battery out for 2 mins.
I have ran a system restore with no avail.
And I also have no windows disk, only a partition, so a way to restore my ports with a format is what I'm LOOKING for.

I suspect the USB ports are underpowered....front ports are notorious for this on prebuilt machines...
You can BUY a PCI USB card that will give you up to 6 new USB ports on the rear of the machine for about 25 Bucks...

Solve : "Autorun" mistery?

Answer»

Hello,
I don't know if it is a mistery or not, but my "Autorun.inf" file would not run on my Windows 98SE while it works OK on Windows XP.
Could anybody please tell me what is missing in Windows 98SE which gives me the problem, or rather, what is wrong? Is there any fix?MAYBE it isn't compatible with Windows 98?

What is this Autorun?HI,
Sorry, I just came back from a trip.

As a matter of FACT, it is an EXTREMELY simple autorun.inf file which reads as follows:

[autorun]
label=name of drive

The above file wwas then copied to the multicard reader; and it is supposed to assign the given name to this card reader drive upon its insertion.

HOWEVER, this .inf file works with Win XP but not with Win98se.I'm not completely sure but it might not work in Windows 98.

Is this a CD or another device?

Solve : Hyperlink in Frontpage problem?

Answer»

When I add a hyperlink to a thumbnail photo to open up a larger version of that photo in Frontpage, it opens the photo in Photoshop! Why? How can I get it to open inside my webpage? For some reason it'd seem the pic is being seen as wanting to be edited. Let's check out your code - post the relevant code you are using then we can check that out. It'll HELP too if you put your large version pic inside another html page and call that with your link, unless you want to also open in a new window.

All you should need is something like............

Code: [Select]<a href="largepic.htm"<img src="yourfolder/yourthumb.jpg"></a>
So clicking on thumb would take you to the new page with larger pic.How do I get this code for you? I clicked on the thumbnail and then switched to code mode and this is what was highlighted but I don't think this is what you want.

THANK you, thank you, thank you for your help!I tried connecting the thumbnail to another html page and it opened it fine. The problem is with opening a larger photo inside the thumbnail's page. It still just keeps sending it to Photoshop."How do I get this code for you? "

You should have an option to view code as well as WYSIWYG as you have demonstrated but what you posted is only the thumb image path and no hyperlink.

I suggest too - maybe just me but, do away with spaces in filenames - IMO they are a source of nuisance and trouble. STICK to lower case and replace spaces with dashes or underscores.

You want it seems to open your larger image within same page? Well - this will present problems and is probably why you are getting an edit pic option. If you want to use same page then you'll have to resort to some other methods using CSS and/or JScript to make things work this way. Seems like that might be more than you can do right now.

Much better would be to place larger image on separate page and make things easier for you. So - if I use that image code you have already from your post and link it to another page then - that I think is way to go. Like this - (I have gotten rid of spaces!)

Code: [Select]<a href="your-large-pic-page.htm"><img src="../2008-06-10-New-website/images/modest_bridesmaid/black-front-small.jpg" width="108" height="144" border="0" alt="link to large front photo"></a>Please go to this address www.eternitybridalandprom.com Click on one of the photos and a larger photo will pop up. This is what I want to do. Maybe I didn't state my intentions correctly. I just want the photo to have it's own window to pop up in within the page that they are looking at and then the customer can click on the top red X and it will close. Instead of the large photo opening up inside their own window it kicks itself into Photoshop.

This copy below I thought had the hyperlink information. The photo I want to send it to is the "black front large"

href="../2008-06-10%20New%20website/images/B2%20website%20Photos/web%20black%20front%20large.jpg">
[/url]
[/font][/glow]

If I make a link to an html page it opens to that page o.k. Is there a box I need to check to stop this Photoshop thing from happening. Or, do I have to make an html page for every photo I want to pop up in the large version? That will take forever! I swear it was working fine a couple of DAYS ago, this Photoshop opening the file up has just happened.Quote from: mrldrl on August 16, 2008, 11:27:00 PM

Or, do I have to make an html page for every photo I want to pop up in the large version? That will take forever!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe each photo requires it's own page for this technique. And, it should not take "forever", not at all. Each of those photo pages would be the same HTML except for the specific image. So, just copy the HTML code from one known working file to another, make the minor changes to display a different photo, and save the file under a unique name. Or, just take that a file that's been developed for one photo and basically save it as a template for other photos, then just open that file, make the needed changes, and save it under a unique name.

Regarding your issue about clicking on photos in FrontPage and that causing a photo EDITOR to open, try previewing your HTML file by using your web browser instead of FrontPage. To do that, open your browser, click on File, Open ..., and navigate to your HTML file. Thank you so much, I do believe it works now.
Have a nice day!

Solve : agh please help! Only PC in house wont start up because of "disk read error"?

Answer»

so this morning I attempted to start up my dell dimension 4850 (for those of you that know dell, yes it is old, yes I want to buy a new desktop but my parents don't think its required) and i get the quick little dell loading screen. Then, where I am supposed to get the windows xp loading screen I get a blank screen that simply says

Disk Read Error
Press Control + Alt + Delete to Restart

I restarted repeatedly for about 10 mins and was constantly greated with the same screen in the same fashion.

I placed the xp LOAD disk in my computer, pressed f12 on startup and selected boot from IDE disk drive. I boot the xp install disk and attempted to repair the windows folder on the c drive. It says compleate but still doesn't do anything on boot. I create a partition off the main c drive hdd and load do to that and get nothing again. I load xp to the second hdd ( which is tiny and hardly ever used if only for temp documents) and make it default boot directory, still doesn't work. I checked both hdd and they are functioning correctly.

My dad, who's pc knowledge is well out of date, wants to re format the hdd. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ME!!!!!!! I need help badly as I have ireplaceable data on the hdd ( I design houses for my architecture class using sketch up, I just finished a 2 year 20000 square foot dream home with full furnishings and all, only saved on that hdd)

So please any recomendations would be great. As I said it is the only computer in the house, I am on an Iphone which is a pain to type long passages on. And please don't look down on me for being a kid. I know alot more about computers than most people ever learn =]Quote from: Kidengland22 on August 16, 2008, 11:13:58 PM

A word of friendly advice: hold back on remarks like that, if you want to be helped (by volunteers who don't have to). If you know all that, how come you didn't do a backup? Especially since it sounds like the hard drive is failing.

Quote
I checked both hdd and they are functioning correctly.

1. How did you check that?
2. How do you know they are "functioning correctly"?

Your options are limited unless you can remove the drive and install it as a slave in another PC. Then, copy off any recoverable data & burn it to optical disk(s). Since you "know a lot more about computers than most people ever learn", then that'll be a doddle, won't it?

Or make a BartPE bootable pen drive with enough space to hold your (hopefully) recovered data.

And learn a lesson. A professional architect who lost 2 years work because they couldn't be **ssed to do backups would (a) go out of business (b) deserve to.

Then you should know that your hard drive has failed or is possibly failing. Run the hdd manufacturers diagnostic software available at the manufacturers site (see here).

Option: Install the drive on another pc as an internal slave or as an external usb mass storage device and try to backup your critical files.

Perhaps you don't have to recover files because, using your in-depth knowledge of computers and their fallibilities, you have already backed up your files

That's my lot, suggest you browse here..

Good luck.
sorry. I didnt mean to come off sounding arrogant. But I have asked other people and they just treated me like a 5 year old. I just wanted to avoid being looked down on beacause of age. Sorry

I have a cd that I ran on boot that checked the hdd. Said both were fine. The smaller secondary one is the stock 8 gig hdd. Where as the primary is a 300 gig western digital that is not even a year old. I have never had a problem with it before. The hdd it replaced worked flawlessly for 6 years before it went haywire.

I haven't backed up because I really have noting to back up to other than the hdd itself. Outside my computer I have a 2 gig USB card and this iPhone. Quote

What kind of CD is it?
Quote

CDs, and DVDs have been around for quiet a while....
it was the western digital cd that came with the hdd.

I back onto DVD every 3 or so months.

I took my pc to best buy, had GEEK squad take a look. They said it was the motherboard that was causing the problem, probably from overheating ( oops, guess I shouldn't try and play demanding games on a crap system).

Bought a new comp today, put in the hdd's and they are fine and perfectly intact ( I just have 3 instances of xp loaded on them)This makes no sense at all...

Neither does the Geek Squad's advice.

Why's that? I could see files via the xp install disks repair prompt but could open no files. The hdd's were therefor readable and functioning but the computer could make no sense of the data. Bios problem. Had to be. Anyways I now have my hdd's working as they did before. Andihavent lost any data, at least as far as I can see. Quote from: patio on August 17, 2008, 01:39:35 PM

Patio, this is the guy who knows more about computers than most people learn in a lifetime, so when the guys at Bestbuy said his PC was hosed because the BIOS had overheated, and he'd better buy a new PC, he knew at once they were right.

most people in the US learn how to create and save documents and that's it.

I already said that what I previously stated came out wrong and that I didn't mean it the way it sounded.

They didn't tell me to buy a new pc. I took the oportunity to coax my parents into getting a new one. There was probably a METHOD to update or reinstall the bios but why bother keeping an old compleate PIECE of crap for longer when the oportunity to get a brand new upgraded computer is staring me in the face. kidengland, FWIW I think you did the right thing. Just having a little fun at your expense Take it like a man. Stick around and soon you'll be dishing it out. I have talked up hardware faults to my nearest and dearest to UNLOCK funds for a new PC myself, so I shouldn't mock...

Yeah, don't worry, Dias can be nasty, at times.................................. ..just kidding

Solve : Problems with sensitive cursor after installing RAM?

Answer»

Hi everyone.
I've recently installed another gig of RAM to boost the total up to 2 gig.
Since then I'm having problems with an over sensitive cursor.
To be exact, when I click 'Back' it sometimes goes back 2 or 3 pages. This also happens when I try to click open an application like INTERNET express, it will open 2 or more pages.
Also if I try to highlight TEXT or multiple images, it will only (sometimes) pick up 1 word or image.

Have you any advice?

I am running

Can you try another mouse? (preferably a PS/2 mouse)

I SUPPOSE that is an option albeit the mouse I'm using is wirelees along with the keyboard.
Would I be able to use a wired mouse with this?Yes, try a wired mouse.

Seeing as it is a wireless mouse, do you think it may be low on power or there is another device interfering with the wireless signal?I'll change the batteries first and see.
I can't think of anything else that's interfering with it.
Failing that I'll try a new mouse. All right. You should also be able to slow down the curser by opening Mouse in Control Panel...

From what he has told us, it's not the speed, but how many times it's clicking. Your right it's not the speed, it just gives multiple clicks and won't highlight.

I've just changed over to a wired mouse and it's working great.
Don't know why the RAM caused the other to do this, unless it's just a coincidence!

THANKS for all your help, really appreciated!Ok, as long as it's working.

If possible, I would use the wireless mouse on another computer and see if the problem remains. (just so you know)
Thanks again...I'll try that!Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 17, 2008, 08:35:47 AM

Solve : Microsoft Outlook 2007?

Answer»

Does anyone know if it is possible to share a contacts list or address book if you are not using exchange? We are a small 4 computer office, and don't have the need to run our own email server. Any help WOULD be appreciated. So you want to share the contacts list with the other four COMPUTERS, yes?yes! can you help
I forgot to welcome you... So welcome to the FORUM!

Give me a minute or two....Try the Mircosoft Solution Center: http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11335

Are you using a local area network? Or how are the computers connected?Yes! we are using a local area network!
I don't think there is a way, with Outlook 2007, without using Exchage Server, or more "payed-for" software.

Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft didn't find anything free, but there are apparently a number of sites out there that OFFER a product like Exchange.

Sorry I couldn't help you, but come back tomorrow. Someone might know something I don't.

Good luck with it.
Maybe you could create a file path to ONE address book that is shared on network.

Files can be shared between PC's and accessed on a local network if done right.

This is based on outlook 03...don't have 07

Take a Personal address book file and put as shared on network. Then set this PAB on each computer aiming toward this file. so anytime a new email contact is added you are all adding to same file.

This is all theory..I have never attempted it. So attempt if you wish.

To set PAB go to outlook tools, then email accounts, add new address book, additional address book, personal address book..then aim path at the shared file. do this for all PC's. I don't know if the above suggestion will actually work, but it sounds like a good idea. You might as well give it a try.

Other than that, I really can't think of any way to share these files in a live setting without MES. You could e-mail new contacts to each other, which are easy to integrate via Outlook 2007, but it's inefficient for what you want to do.
