Solve : 2 HDD and now it won't do a warm boot?

Answer»

I added a MAXTOR HDD(I had from an old computer) to me desktop PC and now it will not do a warm boot. I can do a cold boot everytime. I tried each HDD independent from the other as a master HDD and it warm booted. But when together it fails.
Master HDD with XP on it and slave with no OS.

My question is this. Is there anything that is checked on warm boot up that is not checked on a cold boot?

I notice that only on warm boot does it show this white box with sections in it stating info about Cache, hard disks,PCI devices.
Below this is DDRAM at DIMM#: 1,
Searching for boot record from IDE-0 ..not found
Searching for boot record from CDROM ..not found
Searching for boot record from FLOPPY ..not found
Searching for boot record from SCSI ..not found

Boot Failure
reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device
press any key when ready

IDE I assume.

Are the jumpers set right on each drive?

Does the BIOS properly id each drive?

Try a new cable.

Download and run Maxtor's diagnostic software on the "old" drive.

What OS is on each of these drives ? ?Quote from: patio on August 10, 2008, 07:50:46 AM

IDE cable

Bios recongizes the 2 drives: ONE as Master and other as slave. This is correct. I can access both on windows too. Jumpers are correct.

I can cold boot and no issues are found whatsoever. It is ONLY if I hit restart (warm boot) that I get the boot failure.

I tried to find maxtor software to test HDD bit couldn't find it. Both drives are maxtor.
The thing is the HDD with XP on it will warm boot if I remove slave (older HDD). slave HDD is not in boot up sequence(no OS on it)How old is the Maxtor? There may be some incompatibility.

Use Seatools: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/.tried it already and it says device might not be pass through?
I have tested old HDD before and found it to be okay.

any ideas on what is different on a warm boot and cold boot? what files are looked at differently?

Boot.ini file is fine since cold boot works and I assume HDD is fine again since Cold boot works? Quote from: believer on August 10, 2008, 10:32:22 PM

Any idea what this means?

I don't know what is looked at differently between a cold boot and a warm boot; don't think that's the issue, though. On a cold boot I think the hard drives are initialized by the BIOS; on a warm boot, I don't know.

Any yellow marks in Device Manager?

What does Windows Disk Management show for the drive? Not sure what the no pass through means.

Interesting thought...BIOS does a cold boot but what does the warm boot...if not Bios then whatever does is the difference.. ANYONE know that answer?

No yellow marks in Device Manager and disk manager shows it fine nothing unsual.I'm GUESSING Windows.

Have you tried a new cable? If windows...could XP not like my Master HDD?

I know there are different parts to the IDE cable...does the reboot use a different portion then the cold boot?
I will try that right now...I'll post results in minute
I DON"T BELIEVE IT!!!! IT WORKED(sorry for caps). I spent sooooomany hrs trying sooo many different things. Why it worked I am not sure but that it did is GREAT!

I guess now I know why the PC I took the slave HDD from was bad..hahaha!

Just hit restart again to see the wonderfull bootup!

Thanks drmsucks !!! And thanks for being up at this time on forum!

BOD BLESS YOU MAN! Take care.

The log is clean.
You didn't answer my question, if your computer was also slow before installing AVG 8.0.

Then...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner.
I have Ccleaner for years.
I perform cleaning at least once a week.
In a way I kinda answer the question.
PC became slow over a period of time. AVG might have contributed but I didn't see any dramatic change because of AVG.BTW
I forgot to mention:
Pulling up the ADD/REMOVE programs window TAKES about 1-2 entire minutes up until it builds the prg list.
Thought I'd mention that. How does computer boot, and respond in Safe Mode?UGH
I would have to do that to check it out but I am currently running some prg's.Let me know, when you can.
It may bring some hints, since in Normal Mode, I can't see any unnecessary startups, or services running.i'm goin to restart safety mode and i let u knowOK.OK
I restarted in SAFE MODE straight no networking.
Took a while loading again but after booting
it was significantly faster in simple things like right clicking on the desktop, pulling up START menu as well as ALL PROGRAMS menu.
When I re-restarted in normal mode (current) I saw some improvement but still
if this PC is down and I'm out the door and WANT to come back really quick to check for an address in google maps or something I WILL NOT consider gettin this PC on if u understand what I mean.
To resume: FAST (or normal) in safe mode
SLOW (but not as much) back in normal mode.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again. Now I will also like to mention the following.
Although I don't have virtualy anything in startup I do have a HUGE list of prg's in QUICK START plus a small toolbar with my drives (self made) on the task bar.
Is that a possible problem?I'd like you to totally uninstall AVG, and install one of these:
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html
- Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
This is as an experiment. If things won't improve, and you like AVG better, you can always go back.I didn't see your last post, but let's try AVG thing, first.
Number of icons on your desktop, and number of Quick Launch items may have INFLUENCE on startup time, but not afterwards.I got the Avira didnt like it
Now i'm running Avast
It's about the same as before (speed wise)

Solve : Help with windows partition/ disk access?

Answer»

I just reformatted my computer. I have a windows install disc. When installing windows, it gets to the screen where I can choose a partition to install on.

The hard disk is recognized because it shows the correct size and name of everything. However when I go to create a new partition to install. I just get something about disk cannot be accessed.

I am running an old 2800+ athlon thunderbird. I believe I have a Asus A7N8x MOBO (socketA 462). ALSO if it helps, I am not running SATA, it is just straight IDE I believe.

I am lost and any help would be appreciated. I have searched before I ask my question, but I don't really know where to start.

Thanks,

DaveDave...

Can you tell us why you reformatted in the first place? What problems were you experiencing prior to coming to the decision you needed to perform a clean installation?

What version of Windows are you putting on this thing?Yeah I am putting XP on it. It had not been clean installed ever in about 5 years and performance was really sluggish and defragging was no longer helping.Have you tried the win98se floppy boot disk.I am thinking of fdisk and
format.

The below LINK is a file that will create a bootable win98se floppy disk.

http://1gighost.com/ed/ta/boot98se.exeAlso...you may want to take a look at this link: Windows XP Clean InstallCould it be a problem stemming from mobo drivers?
I have done clean installs before.

This is for a friend who wanted it reformatted and he also wanted xp.

The software is not a retail version of XP, but appears to be some kind of OEM version???Quote from: hawkeyehero on August 12, 2008, 04:46:40 PM

You have to delete the old partition first.

Follow this order:
1. Delete partition
2. create partition
3. format partition. Dont use the quick method.

Solve : Bootup error won't open Windows?

Answer»

I've been using WIN98 very successfully and have not added or removed any programs recently. Now when I TRY to boot up I receive the DOS msg: "Data error reading drive C. Abort, Retry, Fail". At the DOS PROMPT I can examine the C directory and see its contents. So the drive is working. I can go into the Windows directory and see all of its files and directories but I can't open anything from the list. How can I identify the problem? (I'm using a backup COMPUTER to send this.) Solve : convert to ntfs?

Answer»

???When I try to convert my hard drives (two sata drives in a raid 0 configuration) to ntfs I get the following message.
Convert cannot run because the volume is in USE by another process.
Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume .

My operating system, XP PRO, is on this volume.
Would you advise me to continue with this conversion or not?
What are the dangers etc.. if any.
What does the term dismount mean?
What are open handles?
Many thanks
John

Would you advise me to continue with this conversion or not?
The CONVERT command is typically safe to run, but I would still recommend a good backup just in case.

Quote from: montfort on July 28, 2008, 03:27:13 PM
What are the dangers etc.. if any.
If the process fails or you lose power in the middle of the conversion, the volume could be stuck between FAT32 and NTFS requiring data recovery, or possibly lost data.

Quote from: montfort on July 28, 2008, 03:27:13 PM
What does the term dismount mean?
When a volume is mounted, then it typically has a drive letter and it can be accessed. When it is dismounted, then it can not be accessed as a drive or path. Dismounting a volume is typically required to make sure the file system is not is use so changes can safely be made, such as a full backup, or CHKDSK, or CONVERT.

Quote from: montfort on July 28, 2008, 03:27:13 PM
What are open handles?
Open handles would basically be open files. When WINDOWS is running, it has numerous files open at any time. In ORDER for CONVERT to change the file structure from FAT32 to NTFS, it needs to be sure there are no open files (or file handles), so it can properly do its job.

If you just have one drive letter (your RAID 0 is all in your C: drive) then you won't be able to dismount WITHOUT rebooting. So even if you said YES to allow it to dismount, it will probably tell you that it can't dismount and ask if you want it to run at the next reboot or something like that. If you say YES and reboot your computer then (assuming you have adequate free disk space) it should convert your volume to NTFS at the reboot. Depending on the size of your drive, it can take several hours for the entire process to complete.Great
Thanks Gary
I have two other hard drives, so space is no problem.
I shall have a go at this and let you know of the outcome.
Thanks again
JohnHi Gary
I have run the file conversion and all is a ok.
Again, many thanks for your help.

Solve : Freeze when booting install disc?

Answer»

Exactly what the topic says.

I'm trying to install XP on this old machine I have lying around. Swapped some hawrdware and whatnot, new PSU and a DVD drive. Put in the Windows CD, push any button to BOOT from CD. This is what HAPPENS:

It starts loading, the usual business, just abit after it says that stuff about RAID while loading the installation all the letters disappear except the ones saying Windows XP Installation at the top and it stops doin anything.

What causes this?Could be a bad disc? only guessing on this one.Might try another hard drive if you have?Just tried with a SP1 disc, gives the same results.Did you go to boot options when loading?

When you PC is starting LOOK at the screen when the RAID logo comes on, and see if it tells you press a certain button to enter advanced boot options. Press it, and select boot from CD (presuming you have the XP CD inserted)...

Any luck? Boot options? No no I mean

I already managed to boot the XP cd, sorry if I'm not explaining myself good enoughe hehe.

It's just after this PART all the letters disappear.

Solve : After system restore, C drive and D drive appear?

Drive letter re-assignment perhaps from some malware ? ?

What does that mean? and why the rolling eyes emoticon. Any help would be appreciated.@teagues - Where do you stand now? Have you BACKED up your DATA - off the computer? Have you done anything?Quote from: drmsucks on August 11, 2008, 09:59:11 AM
@teagues - Where do you stand now? Have you backed up your data - off the computer? Have you done anything?

Yes, I have tried. I put the recovery disc back in and tried to do a full restore, without backing anything up on my hdd, just to SEE if that is what caused it. But that did not work, as both the C and D drive came back with the same properties. I have backed up what I need off the hdd, that is why I tried that.

Then, I got a program called partition magic 8. But, once I try and install it, it asks me to insert a 3.5 floppy with 1.44MB for backup purposes. I don't have a floppy drive on my computer, so I click the browse button to use another drive, which is my CD/DVD drive, and it won't allow me to use CD-r or DVD-r to back up. It just has an error message that comes up-"this CD is write protected, please use another CD or remove write protection." The problem is, I can't figure out how to remove the write protection from these Cd's. Any advice?

Also, I tried to do a system restore through the hdd, not with the recovery disc, but an error message tells me that I need at least 200mb of space to do it, and I don't have that available in the C drive.teagues...

Does your recovery software give you the option to delete/CREATE partitions prior to performing the recovery? If so...what you'll want to do is to delete the partitions currently on that drive. Then just create one...and only one partition. Format that partition, before the actual recovery. Your recovery software will partition the drive into two separate partitions...one for the operating system and the other being the recovery partition. The operating system will be installed as the C: drive and the recovery partition will be, presumably, the D: drive.

This should take care of the problem. Other than that...I'd recommend installing a cheap floppy drive...going to the hard drive manufacturer's website and using their drive software to prepare your drive for the recovery process.

If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

I'm currently at work, but will be more than happy to oblige...once I return home...around 6PM EST (USA).Saviour, I don't know if the restore disc has that option, I will try it when I get home from work. I'm pretty sure the only two options were Full Restore, or Revised Restore- which ALLOWS you to back up on the hdd.

But I am not sure, so I will let you know after I try it.

Thanks for your help.You're welcome...

Will wait for your next post...

Solve : Scanning Options ROMs on startup?

Answer»

When I turn on my computer, a black window comes on saying Scanning Option ROMs and it TAKES a long time now for my computer to load. The black screen stays on for around two minutes. First with the scan options displayed and then a blank window. I have windows xp home edition. It LOOKS LIKE you may need to update BIOS.Thank you for your reply. What is BIOS and how do I update it? I don't know much about how computers operate. Quote

What is BIOS and how do I update it?
Since you don't know, and updating BIOS may be tricky, I rather avoid any advice here.
You may ask around. Maybe some family member, or a friend knows little bit more about computers.
If you'll find someone, you may post back here, and we'll go from there.Thank you. Keep us posted. Hello, I finally found out what the PROBLEM was after having it in the computer shop twice and finally bringing it home and having the computer guy come to the house as he couldn't get it to do what it was doing at the shop. It was my card reader for my camera. Whenever I turned on the computer, my computer or MOTHERBOARD or whatever was searching for the reader and thus, the scanning option ROM came up. He told me to turn on the card reader after I turn on the computer. So glad that is all it was. And thanks for all your input on this matter. Good news
Thanks for posting back.

i have a dell dimension desktop, 6 years old using windows xp, it has 512 mg of memory and a 60 gigabyte hard drive everything was fine till last night i got a blue screen and turned it off when i tried to restart it it kept TELLING me that there was no boot partition i then renistalled windows completely and it still says no boot partition the only way it runs is if i put the installation disk in and then turn it on if i turn it off i get the same message sorry for the long post but i wanted to explain my problem as much as posibbleDo you have an original Windows CD?WELL bro do dese two things and see if it works or not.....

1. With the XP CD in the drive, go to Start > Run and type "sfc /scannow" w/o quotes. This will check ALL of the required Windows files and see if they are intact and replace any that are corrupt or missing.

2. Try opening up your PC case and unplug the CD drive so that you have only the hard drive hooked up to your motherboard. If this works there could be a problem with the CD drive or something else hardware related. QUOTE from: drmsucks on August 11, 2008, 10:08:21 AM

This could have a lot to do with the problem.... We will just wait until pappyjack gets back to us to find out. After 6 years...the hard drive might have just decided to take a dump.

Do you have ANOTHER hard drive you can use? Of course...one that you're not afraid of wiping clean and reinstalling a new operating system on?

Normally...when Windows tries to boot up...and can't find the boot files it needs to do so...it could be for several reasons...corrupt or missing boot files...missing a partition...drive failure.

I'm assuming...since you've already tried to reinstall the OS on the drive in question and get the same error...there is nothing on the hard drive you want saved...correct?

Try REPLACING the drive with another...making sure you have the jumpers set correctly. Reinstall the OS on this new drive and see if you still get the same problem.Quote from: abubucker0 on August 11, 2008, 01:58:05 PM

This has nothing to do with the problem - it may be useful for the solution.i do have another hard drive i can try, and yes i have athe origial windows cd that came with the computer, also even though the computer is 6 years old the hard drive is maybe 3 years old thanksi just tried the sfc/scannow command and the the message that windows could not find that file came up Boot from your Win XP CD. Press 'R' to start the Recovery Console. When Recovery Console starts, it will ask you which Windows installation to repair; you only have one so enter '1.' Enter you admin password. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type fixmbr and enter it. Exit out of Recovery Console and try to boot from the hard drive.

If still won't boot, proceed exactly as above but type fixboot instead of fixmbr. Try to boot normally.

If still no boot, go to the website of the manufacturer of your hard drive and download and run their diagnostic software. Actually, this is a good idea even if you get a boot.

Best of luck!

Solve : deleted file from backup floppy also deleted it from hard drive and backup CD?

Answer»

I have Microsoft XP. Today, I made a backup of Word on a floppy (I know these are antiques) and a backup of Word on a CD. I went into the A Drive and deleted two files that were password protected (EVEN though it did not ask me for the password). Then, I was stupid enough to empty the Recycle Bin. When I went into the Backup CD, those two files were gone and they were also missing from the LIST of Word Documents on the hard drive. I sure did not know if I deleted them from the floppy, they WOULD also be deleted from the other drives. These were two important files and I need them. HELP!!! Anyone out there who can help me recover them? You may want to try this software program: UndeleteMyFiles

Solve : Problems with partition?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I have a 500 GB HDD, Seagate BARRACUDA, and I have 4 partions on it. 2x125 GB, 1x175 GB and 1 of the rest of the space. I have USED Paragon DISK Manager to shrink one partition down from 125 to 120 GB, and this program reported it would take like 8 h to complete. I hoped it will be much quicker, so I left it run. After like 1 h, it still reported 7 h left, and I decided to stop the process.

Now that partition is screwed, it still exists, and Windows can't access it, because it says corrupted, unreadable, something like that. I tried to rebuilt the partition table for that partition using Partition Table Doctor, which was able to recover it. But (!!!), that's not all. Now the partition is visible under Windows, but it appears to be EMPTY!!!

I have scanned the "recovered" partition with File Scanvenger, which is able to recover my files, but it messes up the filenames, and the folder structure that existed, is now gone. So I won't use it. What could I do, I know my files are in there, how could I get them back?? Please HELP!!Try FreeUndelete: http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/

Solve : Hangups and Boot Problems?

Good NEWS. It's worked.

I was even able to change the HD access MODE in BIOS back to "auto" afterwards.

I am currently on my PC with all my files and programs. I figure I'll use the old HD as backup until it dies.

There are still some small bugs to work out (*censored* is SCSI/RAID and why does it keep wanting to install? Disabled in device manager UNLESS you guys think I need it.) but all problems seem miniscule compared to the other catastrophic failures and the amount of EFFORT I've spent over the past week.

Solve : xp booting?

awhile ago i installed a program that modify the xp booting picture but then i changed my mind and didnt change it but since then i get a MSG right after i start my windows with 2 options to run either xp or the new boot picture..ans also since then, i got folder system32 opening up whenever xp starts too..i need to change that back PLZ

i thought its important to post how my boot.ini file looks like so here it is..

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="OS for testing new boot screen" /fastdetect /KERNEL=NewBoot.exeWas this a gui .....this is the page where i downloaded the Boot Editor http://userxp.belchfire.net/indexbe.htmFrom the page you linked to :

Quote

How to install

Extract the zip file to a folder. That's all...

(Requires msvbvm60.dll. If you don't have it, you can find it everywhere in the net or here)

(Also requires comctl32.ocx. If you don't have it, you can find it everywhere in the net or here)

How to uninstall

 Go to Help - Uninstall

 Delete programs' folder
i did uninstall the program but the problem still exist 1. Boot.ini File. Thank you for posting contents of your "boot.ini" file and link to Boot Editor program.

The boot menu allows you to select one of two different "invocations" of your operating system. The first invocation, "Windows XP Home Edition", should start your system normally using the "Ntoskrnl.exe" core file. I wouldn't expect it to do anything strange, such as "folder system32 opening up whenever xp starts". What does this mean? Does a Windows Explorer window automatically appear with folder system32 open? If you manually select "Windows XP Home Edition" within the allowed three seconds (I'd set this to at least 30 seconds), does folder system32 still open up automatically?

The second invocation, "OS for testing new boot screen", starts your system using the "NewBoot.exe" file. Many strange things could happen here. It depends upon what "NewBoot.exe" is programmed to do. What happens if you manually select this invocation of the operating system? Is this different than the first invocation?

2. Uninstall. Did you also delete its "programs" folder. If not, leave it there for now until you verify none of your "original" system files were backed up there.

3. The author of "Boot Editor" may be the only person who knows which of your "original" system files they modified, if any. You could try to email them, but the Boot Editor link you provided indicates LAST release of the program, version 1.0.1, was in 2004.yes system32 folder still open up automatically if i select either of the both options and no i didnt delete my programs folderso am still having the same problem..so sick of it..i think ive tried everything to fix and the last thing i would like to ask about that would it at least make the boot msg go away if i remove the line "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="OS for testing new boot screen" /fastdetect /KERNEL=NewBoot.exe" from the boot.ini file?!If you do a search on your machine for NewBoot.exe can you see which folder it is in? Can you post the folder PATH here?

i did a complete search and nothing came out with that name save a copy of your boot.ini file to a safe spot just in case or even rename the one you have to something like boot.old.ini

than edit the one you have to get rid of the last line....

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="OS for testing new boot screen" /fastdetect /KERNEL=NewBoot.exe

than save and close it

you should a copy without the edit and than the new edited one. This way if something goes wrong you have a fall back....

when your done doing this reboot your machine. and post back what happens.
In principle I do not bet - especially not on uncertainties,
but would a system Restore undo the damage ?

Regards
Alan
actually system restore have never worked for me...maybe i dont have enough memory i dont know..will fix that later but for now deleting that line out from my boot.ini file has worked and no msgs appears on windows start up but system32 folder still opens up when logging inthis should help with the system32 folder opening up....

Solve : Win 98 - half loaded?????

Answer»

My mate brought his PC round my house yesterday. It 'was' running windows 98 but he tried to reinstall Win98 and he said it froze half way through the installation and now cant get ANYTHING to work.
It has a recovery disk with system files and a Win 98 disk. When running the installation disc it says that there is a disk compressor on the hard drive and therefore cannot run set-up, but because i cannot run windows, even in safe mode, i cannot uninstall it.

Im stuck. Can anyone relieve my stress?

Oh yeah, the PC was built by TIMEIF there is nothing on the hard drive he wants to save, I RECOMMEND doing a clean install, using fdisk to repartition and reformat the hard drive and then using the recovery software to reinstall the OS. A clean install is usually the best route, since TRYING to reinstall an OS over an existing one usually causes issues.Do i use fdisk from Start/Run or in MS-DOS, im a little unsureDOS...

Do you need the particulars?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255867Yes, please. I like it says under my picture, im a newbieCheck the link in my previous post. Thanks for the info, it worked a treat. Apparently (after reading your link and related links) the problem was that the installation CD wasn't downloading the drivers correctly. So every time the loading froze and a error message appeared it was just a case of opening the CD tray and turning the CD a quarter of a turn, closing it and pressing OK. The installation carried on everytime, i had to install a couple of drivers manually at the end but it all went well.
You learn something new everyday

Thanks againYou're welcome...I'm glad it all worked out for ya.

Solve : Help!@ Power Surge messed up windows....WILL paypal U to help?

Answer»

First off i have a 2.8ghz D CORE and 1GB ram COMPUTER with Windows XP Home. Today i had a lot of programs running and unfortunately i had a power surge that somehow screwed up my computer: I restarted it and FOUND out the speed was ridiculously slow. I couldn't even open firefox or open a chat on aim; however, i was able to open winamp and play songs? I eventually restarted it enough times that i got a check disk blue screen and it said it was repairing my index tables, whatever that is, but it didn't help!

I'm not even able to open system restore in safe mode! The program just doesn't respond. Everything just takes forever and when i look at my task manager my system CPU % isn't at 99 . It seems as if my computer doesn't want to work. I tried opening safe mode with CMD prompt but my keyboard didnt work? Something is terribly wrong!

Right now I'm doing a hardware utility test. Hopefully i can get some answers from that.

I would love for ya'll to help me on this. 10 dollars VIA paypal to the first person that helps me resolve this issue. If you are in the USA please call or text my number at 832-257-2055.We are a volunteer Forum so Paypal is not neccessary...

Does diskcheck run to completion ? ? No matter how long it takes i would leave it run OVERNIGHT if need be.

The drive has probably dropped back into PIO mode which is the slowest data transfer mode there is. This HAPPENS when there are consecutive read/write errors which can happen when power is interrupted for any reason.

Best bet is to let diskcheck run...worst case scenario the drive won't co-operate and you would need to hook it up as a slave in a known working machine to retrieve your data and then re-format and re-install the OS...Yeah disc check completes but when everything starts up it seems as if the computer is still working.... I can play music via winamp but its almost impossible to open anything else up like my computer. Does anyone know whats wrong? If you have the shiny Windows CD, pop it in and do a restore.

Alan <>< Try swapping parts. Get a known good power supply and put it in there, then try some good memory, then a video card, then cpu. If you don't have any spares, then don't do it. There's no use buying parts to swap just to find out it can't be fixed.

Solve : freezes?

Answer»

How would I find out what programs start when I turn on my computer? Alot of the time I wait forever w/that *censored* hourglass sitting there & then my computer freezes & won't LET me do anything, have to shut it off manually. SOMETHING is running a long time. thanksGo to Start --> Run --> type msconfig and press enter.
You can see what starts with your PC there, and a lot of it will be safe to untick.
Just don't untick anything vital to system operation, or your AV or firewall etc.
If in doubt, leave it ticked.
When finished, click apply, then OK, and reboot to see the difference.
A box will come up on reboot - tick the box and press OK.

This assumes you are using XP, by the way - you didn't say.In addition to Calum's post...here is some useful info:

http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/startup.htmThanks alot for helpboth of you, it gets so confusing! I did the msconf thing but so many microsoft not sure which ones to do. Lately it freezes up on me get program not responding & nothing. Also getting a box that says runner error. Gonna look at the site you gave. By the way its win XP.on reading this post, made me think of the situation we are having here at work. We use all pc Windows XP professional. 3 computer are behaving strangely, They are all the same model one and purchased around the same time. Make IBM Netvista. Initially these machines were on Windows 2K but for about 3 years now we are using windows XP.
This is going to be a long one,I am not sure if i am posting this in the right section of the fourm whether it is a virus problem or a windows problem.
at start one of these computers started hanging up when the person was working on it. Then at that time even using ctr+Alt+Delete did not work to bring up the TASK manager to end the programme. Then we noticed the problem became more when we tried to use outlook or connect to the internet. Then windows would never start up.the Window XP screen with the little blue dots running across up but we don't see the dots moving as when windows is loading. It is just stuck and would remain like that for hours. Now two other computer as i mentioned earlier are having the same problem.
These machines are connected to the Corporate network. and are on line all the time. AV being used is Symantec Corporate edition version 9 with updates being sent via the corporate server also Windows updates come that way.
Occasionally we manage to get one of the machines started up and can do some work, but it stall in between and remains that way. The people who are using that machine are also stupid they are in such a hurry and switch off the machine manually without waiting, I am wondering if they could have corrupted the windows system by doing that. Or could their be a virus problem. I am very sure that one of the computers was well protected with the antispyware programmes like spybotS&D and Adaware, also had windows defender RUNING in the backround. But I feel these were not being updated and run routinely.
the possiblity of downloading any patches is out as these computer will lock up when connected to the NET
Any suggestions or helpfull ideas. By the way my systems adminstrator has looked at them and says that some one has installed some new hardware. But we know very well that nothing has been done as such.

cheers
The Saint.Although the topics may seem similar, they probably have very different solutions.
It's always better to start your own thread for your own problems.
Thanks.

Solve : ouch, music changed places?

Answer»

after having a blue screen caused by well-know(I guess) Cdr4-2K.sys and Cdralw2k.sys damaged drivers which were solved by some good (I hope) Microsoft advise, I got the system back again but.....my 2 Music HD's contain now 2 x 180Gb with music that is great but doesnt belong to the title of the song.....It seems that all music has changed places..!!!!! Playing Satchmo's trumpet music I get Vivaldi's music and even Frank Sinatra now sounds like Billy Joel...pure catastrophe..what now? And what happened...

I did remove the mentioned drivers and cleaned the registry and restarted again and all was well, is what I thought, until I wanted to hear some songs I knew belonged to Uncle Satchmo and well...crycrycrycry...what now?

W2K, 2048RAM, AMD Athlon 64, IE60, both WMP and VLC players(same bad crying out loud result in both), the E and F HD's with the screwed up music are WDCaviar 200Gb's 7200 rpm's...

Please help.... :-(((((((((((((((((((((((( strangely enough is the music I still have on C:\ the same I downloaded.....same artists, same music, same songlyrics....

!!!!!!!!!!!!! When putting my cursorarrow at the musicfile I get the correct title but in addition I get: Error, GetPopUpinfo.exe Not Found...!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this someting that belongs to the musicfile or a Trojan or Virus, never seen this before... Is this a Trojan or something else threatening? get it when putting the ARROW (my cursor) to a musicfile.....no name or title, just that message in the "tag".... It's a component of dBPower amp...if you have this installed try un-installing it in Add/Remove and DLoad a fresh version and reinstall it...and this solves my problem as mentioned in the now closed topic? well, it didnt give me back the music it was supposed to play....it gave back the tag, but the file name doesnt play the right music....please re-instate my other topic...

Your two posts have now been merged. to avoid confusion.Thank you Moderator....still looking for a possibility to save 380Gb with music....lots of albums but most of them do not sound like the lable promissed anymore... it might have something to do with those cdr*.sys files that caused so much bluescreens, but has disappeared now when i just restarted the system, but the music is still "gone in a way"....

Help, anybody!!!??? it's QUEER to hear Pavarotti singing Black Sabbath and Black Sabbath playing Chinese Uhru... really nobody who knows or can suggest why 380Gb music over night gets corrupt?

it's like this:

It looks like santaClaus has TAKEN all the music from the E and F HD and spread it all over these HD's....without looking where the music landed (ought to be in the correct albums and the correct titles and the correct singers) Okay, I know that your ISSUE is taking longer than you wanted it to, but I will just go ahead and tell you this:
Give it another day, if you still dont have any responses, go ahead and create a new topic. Please remember to mention in your topic that another member suggested that you repost the entire issue again to get better troubleshooting.

Please remember, you will get a lot of advice that you have already received, but go ahead and try it all again to make sure nothing is missing.

ok, will try thanks....but it is horrible, the music is splattered all over the 2 harddiscs....sometimes I have to laugh despite the situation when I hear Pavarotti sing Hindumusic......well, he should sing Nessum Dorma, but I hear Ravi Shankar... ....music on C:\ is still ok...

Have tried all kinds of Players, no differences there...copying to another PC doesnt make a difference either.....putting the HD's in another PC...nope, sane problem..

but i have discovered that some albums are undamaged, but it is quite arbitrary....most of them either refuse to load or are just far beyond all imagination what music you can expect....lol.....even Metal is now changed into New Age...

Solve : Prevent Windows from installing driver automatically?

Answer»

How do I prevent Windows from automatically detect and install driver for a hardware?
I have a Motorola SM56 modem and I'm running on XP.
When I start Windows, it will install the driver but unfortunately the driver is not working - Windows prompts that there is an error and the device will not work properly.
I downloaded some drivers from the INTERNET and wanted to try them, but every time I uninstall the driver installed by Windows, Windows will install the same driver again when I start the Windows.
Please help.
Thanks. How about uninstalling the driver, then installing the one you downloaded straight away, without rebooting? The SECOND installation will prompt that a driver has been pre-installed then abort. Perhaps some files are not deleted during UNINSTALLATION until reboot.
Try rolling back the driver, then installing your driver of choice.

Alan <>< The system could not find a backed up driver.

I think there must be an option somewhere to enable/disable Windows from auto-detect and install new hardware...Top of the Page for your driver for XP.

Uninstall the old one in add/remove hardware. Double click the DLoad to install the new one and it should finish fine.

Try it first with the modem dis-connected to see if it prompts you to plug it in as it may contain a flash file for the hardware....Alright, after a few trial & error here and there, I FINALLY got the "driver installed successfully" message...but...after reboot, I got the "found new hardware" message again......and it loops again and again....

Is there any way I can manually remove all the driver files installed and go back to a clean one?So, no solution.

I get another modem.

Case closed.

Solve : Computer Performance?

how to REMOVE norton

there you gook i removed nortan... its still running slow.

ill do anything for help at this point Do you have a Windows CD or Recovery CD from the manufacturer in case you need to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows?

If you right click on My Computer, does the System Properties panel show the correct amount of memory for your computer? Also how much free space is on that HDD ? ?

Run disk cleanup and defrag.

StyleXP is a known resource hog as well...K i ran defrag and clean up. and i booted, its better but not as good as it was before.
and no i dont have the recovery disk.
Because i bought this computer used, and it never came with the disk.

and i have 256mb of ram if thats what ur askingOh note, my cpu is going down. thats a good sign.
still LOTS of lag in my game. but i lowered memory to increase ram.
Computer running very fast. but all i care about is this game, thats the only reason i play on the computer...

Travel to crucial.com and enter your specs...it will tell you EXACTLY what type of RAM that machine takes.

I'd suggest another stick of 512MG would smooth things out somewhat.

What did you do about StyleXP ? ?i unistalled it.

but im confused.

one day it was working fine,

the next day slow as *censored*!

can someone explain? Do you always have that LAPTOP plugged into a wall outlet or do sometimes run on battery? I believe many laptops will throttle down, i.e. run at slower processor speed, when on battery. Don't know if that could be a factor here; just thought I'd mention it.nope dont gotta lap top...

maybe someone can list some things that cause low computer performance?software, games, i only play one game.. but idk its weird, its just not acting right! What's "idk" ? ?idk stands for " i dont know " but its pretty much FIXED.. just need to get more ram..

computer running good..

just games, and videos dont wanna play good.. thanks anywayI knew what it meant....

I just wanted to see you type it out.

Solve : Startup h**l!!?

Answer»

I'm past my ability here sure could use some help. My problem is on starup (or rather restart). System is a few YEARS old ASUS MB, P4, 512RAM, ATI Vid, WIN XP SP2. When trying to restart (have always had occasional problem with ATI driver crashing) XP will get to 'Loading personal settings' then the mouse will stop RESPONDING vertically, the screen will go black, then go to the BSOD (or its XP equivilant) I think (onlyabout a third of the characters are rendered) but I can see the 1 to 100 counter checking the drive. Then it restarts in an endless loop.
I can get it to START in safe mode. I have tried to revert to previous working versions. Run an AVG virus scan. Tried to install the latested and greatest ATI driver (to no avail, I think because some install driver does not load in safe mode) (I could not update AVG for the same reason). I tried to reinstall XP SP2 (my slipstreamed version of XP and SP2) it HUNG up on the last restart and when I restarted manually, back to the loop. I tried Trend Micro's house call on line virus scan but just came up with a long list of 'vulnerabilities that could...'Have you tried removing that card and re-seating it ? ?
Check the contacts for crud as well. Clean them with Q-Tips and alcohol.

Might not be the problem but it won't hurt either...

Solve : Help with RUN dll problem.?

Answer»

Afternoon,
Can someone EXPLAIN and suggest how can I get rid or solve the following; when my Laptop starts (Dell Inspiron 8600) there is an error message appearing, the message states: on the top corner; RUN dll, on the inside of the box; C:\WINDOWS\System32\olrslptm.dll not found. Believe me I have tried numerous places, people, but no luck. If anybody has encounter something like that, please share information on it, or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You may have been infected by a rootkit, they choose a random name for the file, so you won't find it by a web search, you MIGHT need to use some virus protection and use a program called Hijack This!

What operating system do you have?
What protection do you have?
How long has this been happening?

Please be advised...only used HijackThis to scan your computer and produce a log for us to look at. Don't TRY to fix anything yourself.Sorry guys, my second computer also went kaput (not sure if spelled correctly ). Anyhow until today I have access to my own computer. I took all of the information that I had and did a clean reinstall of the OS (XP). Also when trying to download HijackThis I had a problem so I took the path I previously mentioned. Anyways, now I will download HijackThis and have it just in case. Thanks for the response. Hope to SEE information here and maybe someday give ideas on fixing problems.

Solve : Device Manager becomes browser, and now shows a browser error page.?

Answer»

Toshiba M400-146 Tablet
OEM Windoze XP Pro Tablet

What an outstanding piece of equipment!!. I love using the Tablet operating system on this computer.

So far, everything external to this DEVICE has caused problems.
Not the device itself.

We bought it from PCWorld... and believe me you don't want to do that, no matter how much money you appear to be saving.

They charged us twice, and then declined to acknowledge the fact for near a month.

The bank (credit card) was afraid of them, since they are really a front for a major multi-national (DSG International). The Office of Fair Trading were (as you might expect) not much help, and the DATA Protection people... it was a non-authorised customer-not-present web tansaction using data passed between two companies after all... were about as much use as a nu-labour MP. ie. none at all, but they cost a lot.

Now it's the turn of the Tablet Windows. For those of you who are wondering, as I was for quite some time... think ordinary XP Pro with mainly the addition of one single application, "Tablet PC Input Panel".

Mate that program in Windoze with a "live" screen of some type... Tosh use a magnetic field, HP use an electronic grid, and you have the basics.

The Tosh WORKS as any other laptop... bit quicker of course with a T7200 dual core.. but otherwise...
Then pop the pen, lift up the screen and turn it back over to cover the keyboard, and you're into Tablet working.
Think stylus based PDA, with a 12" screen and the added ability to right click.

Can't recommend it highly enough.

Anyway... all was cooking as it should until day b4 yesterday.

I got a Canon IP6220D printer from our local discount store (39.99 new at netto) as our second HP all-in-one in as many years had just died on us. Time for a change... and never had Canon.
Beats the HP system all the way home so far.

After working through the day at times on an article and using printer etc. I had cause, which I had not for a week or more, to visit Device Manager.

It had left me.

Gone!!

The Window pane comes up, the buttons in it are there, but the Device Manager screen is now the error page we usually see in IE browser when it gets a bum address.

I tried Toshiba... who work from a premium rate phone line for "support" in the UK, otherwise forget it... no "Contact Us" email address even.

I tried Microshaft... who (helpfully?) sent us back to Toshiba, as the Windoze is an OEM and they don't want to know.

I tried a little program called XP Repair Pro, on the advice of a friend. No joy. It said that it had fixed literally hundreds of "errors", but this is certainly one it missed.

I tried the fixes and looking for the malware listed in the first few pages of this august company. De Nada.

Still no Device Manager.

As it happens, in the tons of possibly vital?? extraware Toshiba put on their systems, there is a Device Manager-like app.

However it still leaves the original problem... and when I came to think of it, it was not one that had not happened b4 on the old tin box (PC).

In that event I was put to using Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Device Manager... which got me in at least.

We did recover it on Tin Box eventually, but I am unable to remember now how it was done. You know how it is... old age, other things...

Anyone here know how please?

BTW, when the HP was working, it frequently used to jam up and the print queue refused to clear, no matter what.
One of the places I frequent had a post which solved it and since it's such a DILLY, and it takes me back to our days in DOS, I'll leave it here for you... sort of advance payment if you like... in anticipation...

To kill a print job on a PC in Windoze...

Go to the DOS command line... in XP it's in Start/Programs/Acessories
Type: NET STOP SPOOLER
This kills the job, and kills the printer driver function too.
To restart it all...
Type: NET START SPOOLER
And wait a minute or so whilst it resurrects itself.

Please help out with the above if you can... I'm not about to get any from Toshiba any time soon.
And if you want to know any more about Tablets... pm me.

QF

Is the subject your problem Decidedly

QF

Very interesting post there.
I agree with you about PC World and related companies, but don't stand for any of their nonsense.
If any company starts trying to charge you twice, do not stand for it.
You are the customer, you have the power, not them.
Remember - they're vying for your service, not the other way around.
Same goes for Toshiba and Microsoft - don't let them push you onto each other. It's Toshiba's duty to provide support for you, I assume you have a warranty of some sort?

Anyway, back to your IMMEDIATE problem.
How about if you go to Start --> Run --> type devmgmt.msc and press enter?
Does that work any better?
I seem to recall having this problem but I can't think how I solved it.
Can you post a screenshot so we can see exactly what you see? Thanks for taking an interest.

The msc run line didn't work, but then since Dev MGR screen fails to appear in either System or Administrative, I think we can presume that something pretty fundamental about it has taken a hike.
I wish, for the purposes of warning to others, I could point to something definitive as the culprit.

When we had the previous occurence on the Tin Box, it became clear that the access from the System avenue was somehow compromised. Access from the Administrative Tools was still possible.

Here that is clearly not the case. The same screen results from either call and also from the MSC call that you suggested we try in the RUN box.

Here's a pic from the Tosh... you can see the little Tablet PC Input Panel in the bottom of the screen... this time in it's conventional keyboard guise. This is the same as working with a stylus based pda.

A pen tap on the top button on the left of that panel however gets you to handwriting input with the pen, and the recognition is pretty good too.

Can't be a Microshaft app, it works too well. ;-))

QFTake a look here.
The issue seems to be exactly the same, and the same advice has even been given first off (no, it wasn't me).
See if either of the downloads suggested works for you.
Edit: I have made the link bold so it is easier to see. They can be a little hard to see on some backgrounds, sorry for not being clearer.Downloads??
I must have missed that reply

The issue is the same as ??

QF

The blue word "here" in Calum's post is a link. Try clicking on it.
Outstanding Gentlemen... and please pardon my Myopia.

The blue highlight in the word "here" appears on my monitor as very dark blue... and then only if I get close.

Typing the line "regsvr32 dmocx.dll" into the run box elicits the typically cryptic reply... in a small grey OK box...

DllRegisterServer in dmocx.dll succeeded

Tapping OK disappears the box...

BUT going to System in Control Panel this time... and the errant Device Manager is back.

Now please... what made it happen, and is there ought I can do to prevent it doing so again?

My compliments and sincere thanks to you sirs, and especially to Tech support Guy and Ramesh's site for the solution, and take an extra bow for being more use to windoze-using humanity than Toshiba and Microshaft combined.

QF

So it's sorted now, Device Manager works fine?
Excellent.
I'm not sure what made this happen or how you could prevent it.
The cryptic answer is that the DLL was unregistered, but I don't know why it would have been - perhaps from some software installed, perhaps a virus? Or maybe just a random glitch.
But at least you have the solution now, so if it should happen again you can fix it.

Solve : Problem with an E-mail In Outlook Express 6?

Answer»

I just joined the forum, so hoping someone can HELP, lol. The other day I sent an e-mail to a "friend...dumb as crap" on how to download Power Point Reader so she can view .pps files. Well she apparently tried it and couldn't get thru it and sent me an e-mail back that I knew had to be long or have an attachment as it said 325kb in the size of it. Now whenever that message is highlighted, I just totally FREEZE. I have NOTHING in the preview pane to indicate what is there, so I end up having to cnt, alt, delete to get task manager to end the program. If I totally avoid that message, I can still open and SEND other e-mails. I can't delete it and I want it out of there. I asked her what she sent and she said she copied and pasted something that she saw when she was trying to download and it MIGHT be big. My question is what can I do to get rid of that message. I have run all my virus programs, spyware programs, etc. and it doesn't do anything. The only thing I see when I close it down from the error report is hungapp and ApplName is msimn.exe
Can someone please give me some ideas.
I have Windows XP, service pack 2, Dell Dimension 4600. Not sure what else you need to know. I've searched the FAQ's today SINCE I joined the forum, so I'm hoping someone much more KNOWLEDGEABLE than I'll ever be can help. Sure appreciate it all. Love this site, it does help alot. Have a great day. Try booting into safemode and deleting it from there...
Tap F8 repeatedly as the machine is starting before Windows loads...If patio's suggestion does not work, see The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express. Compacting messages, as directed in the article, may solve the problem.I figured it out and got rid of it. I clicked on EDIT and then did a FIND. In the box I just typed the subject POWER POINT and did a browse. It came up, I then went up to Edit again and DELETED it. Hoooooray, its gone. I appreciate your responses though. Thanks.

Solve : computer does not turn on?

Answer» COMPUTER started having lots of pop ups, then warned a virus got in, computer suddenly turned off, could not turn it on since. laptop is a HP window xp home edition. help me please.ok so when you press the power button it wont turn on... what about when its plugged into the wall??

what protections do you have on the laptop??

Addtion: try removing the battery and PUTTING it back in or not having the battery in and having it plugged into the wallTry booting in Safe Mode.

And then try a scan.And ALSO;
How old is this laptop?

Possible causes:
Ye Ol' Fashion SUSPEND Mode has been saving crash information. (In this CASE, Unloved Warriors advice would probably fix it)

Also:
Make sure you remove the battery for at least 10 seconds. This (if your laptop is using the old version of Suspend) will make sure that ALL the RAM is cleared completely.

Solve : Internal IP?

Answer»

How do I change my Internal IP address? Is this your own home network? How many computers?Yes it's my own network. 6 computers.Do you want to change all of them or just one?just oneYou will have to assign a static IP that is outside the range currently being assigned. How do I do that, In the router settings? or from each individual computer? From each individual computer. If you want to change all of them, you can go into the routers setup and change the range ALLOWED for assignment. This would require all the computers to release and renew the IP's or a reboot. Thanks for helping but I worked it out. I was assigning the IP Addresses for each computer in the router settings. When i went to see attached devices it showed up the computers connected but the IP didn't change.

So I assigned all the internal IP's then went to each computer, went into the command prompt, typed ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew and then the internal IP changed.I can't just change the range. Because I need to assign an internal IP to each computer. I have assigned them to each MAC Address for each computer so that war driver's can't use my internet.

If a war driver cracks my passkey for the router they won't be able to get in because his MAC address will be dis allowed by my router.Allow "Broadcast" SSID to ASSOCIATE? Yes No

If you have this setting in your router, make use of it. It should prevent your SSID from being broadcast. If they don't know you are there, they won't try to connect.

edit: MAC addresses can be CLONED. You should limit the number of IP's that can be assigned to the minimum necessary.I turned off SSID Broadcasting a while AGO and then my laptop couldn't find the network. So I turned it back on.

I have 6 computers, the router's IP is 192.168.1.1 (Default) and then for the 6 computer's their range is from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.7

So I have limited the number of available IP's but most of the time there will only be about 3 computers turned on, So there are still plenty of IP's available for use of
War Drivers. But I don't think I'd get anyone War Driving in my town because the population is about 4000 and there are only about 10 people I know that know a lot about computers like I do.

Jonas
I had this problem its a definite virus.

Navigate to regedit.exe or regedt32.exe 's location, copy and paste it to another location and rename to regedit2.exe

It should then run - you need to run a good virus scan in safe mode and also may need to run additional batch files etc.Even if it is a virus the problem would be solved if you use my way but the question is for howlong.
Try What deltaslaya suggested and see how it turn out.
Try to scan and remove the virus first then run SFC.
then everything should be solved.
What protection do you have at this moment?

Jonas i've try to rename the regedit.exe to regedit2.exe but an error occur, it sez:

REGISTRY editing had been disabled by your administrator

what make me confuse is, i am the administrator!

anybody please help me...........You have to enable it through Gpedit.msc.
Can you access it. If you can, I (or someone else) will tell you how to do it.i just found that this problem is coz by a virus " [emailprotected] "

the solution i found is:

Open your start menu click Run and paste in the folowing command: REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Submited By HaXxOr.

thank to HaXxor.

however after i RESTART back my PC, the problem is still there, cannot open regedit, msconfig n gpedit.mscQuote from: anonymous on June 16, 2007, 08:28:21 PM

That doesn't sound like the best solution.

Try hijackthis or similar and upload your results to TrendMicro.

Solve : Windows Installer??

Answer»

Have recently had to install a genuine Windows XP Home.

Then SUCCESSFULLY re-installed (or so it says) the software etc., for my digital camera. However, when I TRY to access the program from the desktop, all I get is a box saying Windows needs to configure 'PhotoGallery' - then asks for a CD Rom of that name - which I haven't got - never had - don't know anything about. Then I get Error 1706???

The only way to close the box is to use Task Manager.

Any suggestions or help WOULD be appreciated.Try visiting the camera manuf. website to SEE if the installer is part of that software package...mm2011 ...... Is your Camera a Kodak easy share by any chance ?

dl65 Sorry for delay in replying to you.

No, it's an HP Photosmart M407 Digital. Everything worked fine until I re-installed it after having a new genuine windows package. Have used it successfully for 18 months or so previous to that.

Solve : Wrong date/time in bios & Win XP?

Answer»

Having this difficult problem where the date/time in my computer is backdated to the date/time last logged off. It STARTED with the problem whereby have to change the setting in the bios (due to weak battery?) Now, after chnaging BATTERIES and clear cmos. the problem of the wrong date/time happens. Anyone can help? Thanks.calvina ..... Are you not able to set the correct time and date in the bios and then save changes and exit ?

BTW, what time and date are being displayed ?

dl65

I could either change from the bios or in Win XP. The time date shown will be base on the last time I log out from windows (and switching off the power supply). Is the battery in correctly? Was it new?Just change another new battery. Still having the same problem. Are you saying the time in your BIOS settings do not change...even after you change it then exit...saving your settings?

If the time in your BIOS is being displayed correctly, but not in Windows...and you've just replaced the CMOS battery...try going into your time settings and synchronizing the time with an Internet server. Disable your firewall before you do this. Firewalls have a tendency to prevent the synchronization process.

If you're certain the CMOS battery is new and seated properly and the time is not being displayed correctly in either BIOS or Windows XP, then I might suggest a BIOS UPDATE. However, please note...flashing the BIOS should only be done as a last resort.

What is the make and model of your computer?I could change the time in BIOS and time is correct also in Win XP. The time stop once I log off. When I log in for example the next day, the time shown will be the time which was yesterday that I last log off.

No, time in BIOS & windows are the same

Already did a BIOS update few months ago.

DIY -Shuttle AN40 old motherboard with AMD2.5 XP G, 1GB ram. This problem only starts recently and do not have this problem for the past 5 years. I would like to focus on how we are using the phrases "log in" and "log out". Do you mean the standard NT/XP/2K login/logout, or are you talking about switching the PC on and off?

what I mean was switching the PC off = log off, switching the pc on - log on.have you cleared CMOS?
Quote from: contrex on June 09, 2007, 12:07:07 PM

have you cleared CMOS?

Contrex...see original post.I meant again, after changing battery. My Shuttle sometimes needs 2 or 3 clear CMOS operations.

Ok, have cleared cmos before, will clear again and see whether it helps.Shuttle AN40 is pretty old product... could be hardware related... Shuttle sometimes a bit flaky... I speak as Shuttle owner (ST62K Zen)

Solve : Is this normal??

Answer»

after a clean format c:\ and a clean install without Internet but with Sygate and AVG INSTALLED from .rar FILES...W2K (official one, paid for...build 2095 + SP1...lol...)and before you see the other items on the pic....they became reality after making a pic of this incredible stupid registry...lol...I had the impression most of the registry numbers here on RegCure would be in the zero's?? And yes even before I patched W2K with SP4 and the other 175 patches...lol...
I would not put to much store into this type of utility software, as unless you know what you are looking at you can panic and read the info as faults, without knowing the hardware ands oftware etc installed in your pc its very difficult to judge but do not JUMP to conclusions. nothing in the report looks bad.
a windows Registry is a complete note/list/order of the computer its communication system, software, hardware, everything and it is extremely difficult to give an easy guide to such a complicated data store,
don't panic, is the computer working, is the network and internet working, is there ay problem with the computer?Ignore it, it's probably another scam program with lots of false positives.
So in other words, yes it's normal, no don't worry about it.If you want a legitimate free registry cleaner, try CCleaner.Win2K is up to SP4...has been for awhile. I'd suggest grabbing those updates.

I'm also curious why Sygate and AVG were .rar files as they are free ....you may not be as protected as you think.Patio, think you misunderstand

the sygate and avg software came from another disc (most of my other warez are in .rar form...)and my original disc had only SP1 so I updated it as you can read....just wondered about the lots of figures have a nice weekendQuote

with Sygate and AVG installed from .rar files...

The above is what you stated...Warez beget crappola. You have proven it. Filesharing programs...warez...programs packed in rar files that nomally aren't... You might want to RECONSIDER how protected you might be...umm... doesn't he mean he's backed up warez in the .rar format on another disc? i think he does. in which case, you may well be perfectly protected. i use AVG also and i like it,especially the free aspect of the program. but the other program he mentioned sort of seems suspicious...Well, even if that is the case, he's still using warez that could be infectious.

Peterwolfe,
I suggest you update AVG and scan in Safe Mode when you get a chance. And give CCleaner a try and see what it comes up with.

im stumped then, SORRY my knowledge is limited tbh.

if it was easy, using passwords would be worthless. This is not a cracking site.
How does one forget an admin password...short of amnesia ? ?Info here http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htmwhile booting pres the F8 button so u get them safe mode OPTIONS ...
when u do that choose for Safe mode with command prompt
then when it starts ,, type in: "net user" without the quotes,, so u see which users u have on ur pc ..
then u pick a user,, in ur case its the Administrator then u type in the next: "net user 'username' *" .. NOTE* dont forget the star ..
then u type in the new administrator password ,,
let me know if it works .Hope this is your computer. with the "net user administrator", are you sure you need an asterix, try without it and tell me what happens

Solve : FAT32 to NTFS conversion?

Answer»

hey guys ..
i wonder if its possible to convert a FAT32 to NTFS WITHOUT losing any data within the COMMAND prompt ..
i have a winxp pro + service pack

Help appreciated.Well, the convert tool has converted plenty of filesystems for me without damaging data.

There's no need to emphasise WITHOUT like that. We're not stupid.

How to use the convert tool from the command line

(Assumes drive letter is C, change as NEEDED)

VOL C:

NOTE the name of the DISK in the first line, and the Volume Serial Number (for example, 3F4E-2D1B) in the second. Then type:

CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS

It will ask for that name in confirmation. Then it will ask two further questions. Reply Y each time to set up conversion to happen at the next boot, then restart the MACHINE. (If you are converting a partition other than the operating system’s partition, you may find that it runs without rebooting.) After returning to Win XP, the hard disk will work for two or three minutes, tidying up. Leave things alone during this time.
