Solve : Random crashing, strange problem.?

Answer»

Hey guys, my computer has been acting strange and it has been for a while now. About the time of my last re-format and rebuilding my computer my system will randomly (doesn't matter what I'm doing at the time, it does it no matter what) cut to black and then display a blue screen and restart. I've checked the cooling inside my case and everything is normal, I can't imagine it's over heating. I'm really afraid it might be bad ram, but unfortunately, I don't have a floppy drive so I can't RUN the memtest.

I'm running XP SP2, 2gb of corsair ram, and an athlon64.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you guys THINK it really is my ram I guess I can go spend 5 bucks on a drive. THANKS! There are a lot of diagnostic programs out there...you just have to Google it!

Another way of testing your RAM...start with one stick at a time....using only one slot (the closest to your CPU)...test first stick. No blue screen? Shut down PC...remove good stick...insert next stick...turn on computer. Whichever stick GIVES you the blue screen...that's the bad one.MemTest provides a file that will create a bootable CD so you can run the tests...

Solve : Computer gone to classic setting?

Answer»

Hello everybody
I wonder if someone can help me?
My computer has suddenly DECIDED to go back to Windows Classic from XP and I cannot alter it.
I did run a spyware scanner and I think maybe it deleted something.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
BillWhat happened before this started?
What protection do you have?
And have you tried setting it to the XP style again? Before this I was running an anti spyware programme my son had reccommended. I think it was about:BLANK.
I have tried resetting but it wont go.Unfortunately, about:blank is not a spyware program.

Do you have any other malware software INSTALLED on your computer? Is this the same infected computer from your thread on the spyware/virus forum?

And are you sure you don't mean About:Buster? about:blank is an Internet EXPLORER PAGE, and there is also a virus with this name.

Solve : Math error? or error in code??

Answer»

This isn't a big issue...but it IS curious.

Check the scores.

[CLEANING up - attachment deleted by admin]Explain the error, please. I'm a total dummy with card games.
It is Hearts. You get one point for every heart you catch. Lowest score wins. If you catch ALL hearts and the Queen of SPADES, all other players get 26 points (the Q value is 13 points)

Never mind. I mis-counted the points. The scores are CORRECT Quote from: grubbyjeans on June 08, 2007, 02:28:11 PM

I love the game, but I can't score it, I let the computer do it for me.

Solve : I have 6 applications of SVCHOST.EXE?

Answer»

I have just removed many programs from my computer however I have 6 applications of svchost.exe. Are all 6 required? Or none of them? Or do I delete them all except the largest program?

Also I'm on AOL and found
aolsp.scheduler
aoltpspd.exe
aoltsmon.exe
Can these be removed?

I hope I have chosen the right forum to post these questions. I'm new to the BOARDS. Thanks for any input you can GIVE me.Here is a description of what a svchost.exe file is...

svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

As far as the AOL STUFF, if they are your provider I'd leave them alone.

Alan <>< I have 5 entries for svchost.exe. It's part of Windows. Don't remove any them. If you did, they'd only COME back when you rebooted anyway.

im useing windows xp professional with service pack 2, it is an intel pentium 4 its a 3.00ghz 248 of ram, im also useing agvfree anti-virus and search and destroy.
i was just browsing the web looking at different sites ebay ect. then i swiched off, and the next time i came to it it was doing this.Just a recommendation...

1) Disk Clean up.

2) Defrag.

3) Update your malware protection.

4) Turn off System Restore...Boot into Safe Mode.

5) Run full system scans (inSafe Mode) with your malware protection software...fix or delete any issues.

6) Boot Windows normally.

7) Turn System Restore back on.

Again...run full system scans with you malware protection software.

Post your results, please?I would consider adding some RAM as well...

Solve : Resolved: Patition not obtainable?

Answer»

the one with XP is now unobtainable....using Partition Magic 8.0 to GET that partition smaller wont work, too many errors....looking at My PC I cant see that partition either....cant delete it....what now...

C:\ = W2K(60Gb) plus P:\ = XP (170Gb)

--Marked as Resolved in result of being solved and locked. -ZylstraYou need to post alot more info on your current dilemna, machine specs, OS and what happened prior to this to get relevant responses...Do you have any data you need off of it? If so don't touch it. Use another computer to find a solution.
Also, give us more info so we can know how to help.2048Mb RAM, 3200 Mhz AMD Athlon, Asus A8N-SLI, HD's all WDG 250Gn 7200rpm,
Hd-1: C:\ 60Gb VISIBLE with W2K and part. P:\190Gb (the one I dont see...with XP)
D:\ and F:\ only musicfiles(MP3)...

Trouble started with IE7. which I had imported/installed separately and wanted to remove again after which the old 6.0 would re-appear (in all normal cases but mine)...a short very short message came on the screen after restart (I couldnt read it but it started with Internet Explorer .......) and then XP logged itself off....restarting didnt help because when choosing XP, I saw that the startpic of W2K appeared for a sec and then the screen became blck, heard my scanner start, but that was it....looking at My PC I could see C:\ D:\ F:\ A:\ and of course E:\ which is my dual dvd burner...

Starting in the different modes it really didnt help.....going cmd and trying to find the DIR of P:? Nope

Hpe this is info enough? I seemed to have repaired the W2K which had some MINOR problems too, but strangely enough W2K always repaired itself when having some restarts (maybe it's my imigination)....AVG antivirus and antispyware said no infections....spybot said no problems to fix......have Sygate FIREWALL and disconnected XP's Firewall....no need to have one good one and a swiss cheese together...

The XP I installed is a student one but has an official studentkey and worked nicely without any problems (goes smoothly through all validationsprocesses...lol..)until I was so stupid to try out IE70...

On that invisible P:\ are lots of newly found music, important docs and of course my last backup sucked...hahahahahahaha

I have though a great RecoverMyFiles software just in case NOTHING else works...although I doubt if it can find the invisible Uncle Billy's storage...please help...

When having looked for a last time at My PC after restart it comes up with HD G:\ (probably as a kind of replacement for P:\?) but that one is only visible and doesnt show any info...Now Uncle Billy made me both happy and confused. After I saved W2K I needed to update the whole chebang (75 updates...lol) and after that restart, that was ok...but...before going to the opening concert for W2K it stopped and showed chkdsk G: (volumename P:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then started the longest repairseance I have ever seen.......looked a bit like the horrorpics you get when you have a trojan that slowly but gradually VISIBLE drops all your files to the floor....but it continued for about 15 minutes rolling over the screen and than it said, everything is fixed, repaired, restored etc etc, I couldnt believe my own eyes when having a look on MyPC seeing G:\ which I reported in the last info full of all my stuff again...music and all.....it still didnt want to play with WindowsMediaPlayer but it did with VLCplayer, our dearest hooker of music...lol...

So, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, G:\ said: I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!

But I still cant boot XP on G:\......so the question now is how do I accomplish that with your help?!! It's a doubleboot as told, 1. W2K Pro and 2. XP but 2 doesnt work...(anymore?)

Proud about my good old W2K, build 2095 one of the first in Norway...lol....and he did it again.....unbelievable, now trying to listen to you guys for the bootproblem........but I'm breathing again...

When trying to play music the WMP says: OS cant run %1. but of course VLC does play...and MS doesnt have a solution for the error...!!!Quote from: Peterwolfe on June 05, 2007, 06:42:49 AM

But I still cant boot XP on G:\......
Use your Windows XP CD to repair your installation. Restart your computer with the CD in the drive and let the CD boot. There's a couple ways to do repair. Manually and automatically. I'm not always sure which option is manual, so if you get a command line, try again.
nope, did not work......it even made G:\ invisible again after restart!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i thought xp had to be on the c drivewell it is, in a way, main OS = still W2K on C:\, but i partitioned C:\ in C:\ and, well, originally I calles the other partitionP but it became G: before it became invisible again.....so I started with the XP disc in the machine hoping it would grab the boot, but it didnt and in addition the chkdsk afterwards made probebly the G:\ invisible again...lol.. Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 05, 2007, 11:02:40 AM
i thought xp had to be on the c drive
you can install it on any drive, but it will still put a few bytes on the first drive for booting purposes.

i thought xp had to be on the c drive

In 2001, when I had Windows 98SE on my C: drive, Windows XP came out, and I put it on my D: drive and had a dual boot system for a while. When I decided to ditch Windows 98 I deleted everything off my C drive and used it for storage. I changed boot.ini to suit. Everything was fine with XP on the D: drive except for a very few program installers, whose writers obviously also assumed that everybody runs Windows on a c: drive.
ok just making sureSo neither windows installation will read the partition but there are files still on it that you need? Right?
Ummm... check out your computer management screen by right clicking "My Computer" and clicking on "Manage"
From there, go to disk management. A text and graphical display will open on the right and show you what your hard drive set up looks like. (You may want to maximize the screen.) You should be able to see the status of your partitions and if there are any errors. Let me know what it looks like and if there are any errors or dissimilarities. Are all of your partitions and drives showing up?Put in your XP CD.
Power down and re-boot.
From the first menu choose "R" for the recovery console.
When it loads type in "fixboot" without the quotes and hit Enter.
Open the CDRom and remove the XP CD.

Power down and re-boot.

If this worked your dual-boot menu with Win2K and XP as OS choices will be there.

If this didn't work try the same steps above except type in "fixmbr" without the quotes and hit Enter...

Good Luck to you.problem solved, the guys in the shop just formatted my disc after they found it and installed W2K, clean...lol... but all of you thanks for the assistance

Solve : Can't install SATA drive on XP SP2?

Answer»

On bare bones hardware consisting of CPU, Memory, PATA HD (for details see below).

Installed XP (early version, OEM).
Then installed SP2.
All works fine. Very pleased.
I am attempting to install add a SATA HD, WDC 1600JS-60NCB1
BIOS reports the SATA drive is there.
Windows does not show it (not there in My Computer).
I am (not yet, anyway) attempting to move XP to the SATA drive.
I will appreciate any advice.

System:
Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002 SP2
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, 2.00 GHz
2 GB RAM
PATA HD Seagate 340016A

----Wordbug
I would recommend going into your Administrative Tools in control panel, then clicking on computer management, then Disc Management.

See if the new drive shows up there, and see if looks ok. You might need to create a logical drive on it. It should look similar to your first drive, (which I'll assume is listed as Disk 0) only it'll need to be Disk 1, and also needs to be assigned a drive letter. Windows probably sees it, but it doesn't know what to do with it at this point.Did you install WD's driver for the SATA ? ?First, in reply to Patio: I did not install WDC drivers, at least not intentionally. That drive was OEM
and no disk came with it. Perhaps I should install them later?

Rainman2974: Followed your advice, and pressed on (dangerously, I am sure) as follows.
Disk 0 shows up, "unknown", 149.05 MB, Not Initialized.
Disk 1, basic, 37.266 GB "On-Line" with 3 partitions.
I RIGHT clicked and selected Initialize.
Disk 0 appeared as 149.05 GB Unallocated. Driver shows as Microsoft, 7/1/2001, v.512635.0,
with "device working properly".
Disk 0 appears in Device Manager, but not in My Computer, HDDrives.
Allocated 16 GB of (SATA) Disk 0.
Now that partition appears as H in My Computer.
It seems all is well.
Can move files to and from the SATA drive H.
As a side NOTE, my keyboard locked up, so I couldn't ask if it was safe to restart the computer,
which might have been the case. Still, with no way to post the the forum, went ahead and powered
off, and restarted. My worst FEAR came immediately apparent with notices of Failed to Boot, and set BIOS
to default and try again. Did so, with not much hope. Figured I was dead, with no way to get more
help. I was amazed and relieved when XP booted, and now all seems well.
I can't thank you enough for your help. Quick, and right on the money..
WordbugHad me worried there for a bit!

Glad it all worked out though, I just went through a similar issue when I bought a 500GB SATA drive and tried to install it. Unfortunately you now have only 16G out of 149G you can access...
Right clik the H: partition/drive in Disk Management and select Properties...report what it says info wise...

If it says 16G allocated then i would travel to WD's site and download the Data Lifeguard HDD utilities and do it properly. There will be instructions on how to use the DLoad to create a bootable CD.

Once that is done put in the CD you created and boot up. Then prepare the drive correctly for use.

When you are done and re-boot Windows will be able to see the full capacity of the drive.

Solve : Outlook Express PROBLEM?

I am using Outlook Express as my mail server. A couple of weeks ago, something happened and it started leaving sent messages in the Outbox folder and resends unless I manually delete it. It also is no longer copying the sent message to my Sent Items folder. I loaded NORTON 2006 and ran a full system scan. This is the only thing I can think of that would have done something to it. Any help you can give me in resolving this would be very much appreciated!!!

Do you mean you just installed Norton 2006 and then ran a full scan ...or do you mean that you opened Norton and ran a scan. Is it Norton 2006 AV your using, or Norton Security suite and how LONG has it been installed .

I checked the setting setting for sending messages to "sent items" folder. It's checked to send them.

The Norton version is the INTERNET Security/Symantec Integrator. It was loaded on December 20th. The sent items folder stopped receiving sent message on December 14th.

Thanks
Caryaccording to microsoft, the send and inbox should be under 2,000 items. seperatley. you might need to copy out to other boxes you create in e-mail, just be sure your sent and inbox are under 2,000 items.. hope this helps, it helped us, A 5 month bump....

Solve : program to track of size of folders?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me. This morning I checked the size of C- drive (hard drive) on my machine used as a file-server. I found the size has increased so dramatically. My question is whether there is a program that i can use to keep track of which folders that have increased in size on a daily basis on windows XP Pro and i can deal with it.

I tried to google it but to no avail. Don't know what's the better name i should google by.

Thank you in advanceAssuming you have Windows XP,

You could try doing a search on all files modified within the past week and set the size to above 10mb (or about 10000kb) and search the C drive.
After it finished searching, arrange everything by size or date and see what comes up.associates...

I've found the following freeware (Monidir) for you after doing a Google search for a free file monitoring program:

http://www.contactplus.com/products/freestuff/monidir.htm

This is compatible with Windows 9.x/ME/2000/NT.

I've submitted a question to their support team to see if this is compatible with XP. You can check the STATUS of this question here:

It may be some time, though, before they respond to the question I have asked.Quote from: associates on June 07, 2007, 01:24:10 AM

just KEEPING track right?
here's a simple vbscript to display to you files with more than XX bytes
Code: [Select]
Set FSO = WScript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
sDIR = "c:\temp" 'directory to search
Set objDIR = FSO.GetFolder(sDIR)
For Each efile in objDIR.Files
If efile.Size > 10000000 Then '10000000 bytes
WScript.Echo "File " & efile & " is " & efile.Size & " bytes"
End If
Next

of course, you can also parse out the dir command , GRAB the size from the output, do some calculation, and then display the files you want that are over xx bytes http://www.diskview.com/screenshots.htm

Solve : Windows Problem...?

Answer»

After a blackout, I turned on my COMPUTER, to face the "Apologize, but windows did not start successfully..." window, and it gave me the selections between Safe Mode and Normal. Whenever I click on any of them, It goes to the Windows XP LOGO, and APPEARS to load, however after about 3 seconds AUTOMATICALLY restarts the computer, and the same message pops up.

Does anyone KNOW why this might have occurred? I haven't had any problems with viruses lately at all, so I ruled out them.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.Have you tried getting into safe mode?Yeah, I've tried every single option and it just restarts a few seconds after the XP loading Screen. If you have an original Windows Cd, set the BIOS to boot to the CDROM first, then put the CD in and do a restore.

Alan <>< I wouldn't attempt a "Restore" but a "Repair", first.

Actually...I sit corrected...

If the Restore doesn't work, then try the repair. I apologize for jumping the gun.

Solve : System32 Window @ reboot?

Everytime I reboot my computer the C:\WINDOWS\system32 FOLDER window OPENS. Is it trying to tell me something is wrong. If I just close it everything is fine. What operating system are you using?
What antivirus and antispyware protection do you have installed?

When you go into your start menu, under programs and under "Startup Items", what is listed there? I use XPsp2 with AVG as virus protection. Listed in my Start up is Erunt AutoBackup, AutoCAD Startup Accelerator and 4 Adobe startups (Assist, Gamma, Reader and Reader Syc). My msconfig startup as a couple of Rundll32.exe's with system32 in the path. They appear to be part of the nvidia driver upgrade I just did. I have been doing some codec changes COULD that be the culprit. Codec to me is an inigma and I am not sure I have all that I need or too much. thanks
Is there an Audigy2 sound card in this machine ? ?Yes there is an Creative Audigy2 card in it. It came with the system.Travel Here first.

Scroll down to item #260 listed on the left...if you read the right column you will see what you need...double clik this and choose "Save to disk".

Now find the file wherever your DLoads go or on the Desktop if thats where they land and FOLLOW the instructions below.

It will show a brief success message. When that's done reboot and you are fixed.

When I go to run SFC / SCANNOW. I get this error message: Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now.
Problem is that I don't have one. This is the 3rd time in 6 months that this has happened. Pc is out of warranty now. When I bought this pc it had Windows XP media center on it after 2 times sending the pc to e-machines to be repaired they put XP Pro on it, which I like better as the media center edition was a bare bones edition. My computer runs fine expect for this and I can't add an Microsoft Office program that I recently purchased. I work from home and can't afford to be with out the computer. Is there any way to fix this with out LOSING my pc. Thanks!!
You can try contacting Gateway (makers of eMachines) and see if you can get them to send you the proper CD. In my experience, however, they're very stubborn and do what they can to avoid sending it.

Do you know which DLL's are missing? Perhaps you can down download and replace them.Have a look at this:

May be you need to increase that size.

That article won't help her...the files are not in dll cache as she does not have an XP SP2 CD.
The article references CHANGING the cache size.

Beth the only temporary solution i see for you is to find a FRIEND or family member who has an XP SP2 CD....it must be shiny and say Microsoft all over it for this to work.

Solve : How come my CPU usage is 100% ALL OF THE TIME??

Answer» OCCASIONALLY, I have to click the Windows Task Manager when I have to manage programs that are ‘not responding’. I click other tabs out of curiousity. Before, the CPU usage fluctuates every second or so but it rarely stays on 100% like right now. It is so even if I do not have any other applications open. Is there something wrong with my computer? If YES, how do we fix it? Thanks a lot.

Thanks for bringing that up ("before"). it happened AROUND couple of weeks ago. i would turn off the applications, but still the cpu usage appears 100%. prior to that, the % would be 25%...50%...80%, etc. and if it reaches 100%, it subsides eventually. currently there is an average of 55% processes and i don't know what they all do.

Solve : Can't get Yahoo Mail?

Answer»

Got a new client with XP Pro, no SP's, no AV or AS that can't get to her Yahoo mail (she can get on the web and surf, just no email). I've installed AVG AV, Adaware, Spywareblaster & CCleaner. Ran AVG, Adaware & CCleaner. AVG caught 3 Trojans, Adaware caught about 60 cookies & CCleaner cleaned up 4.5+ gig of junk files. Still can't get to her email account.

Will come back tomorrow and put SP2 on.

BTW - Spywareblaster won't update (says there is no internet connection) and Windows Update won't update either (errors out).

Yes. Very similar but no firewall involved as they have NO service packs installed. They do have an outdated Norton that I will uninstall tomorrow as WELL.

Solve : Several problems :s?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I thought this might be a good place to ask for help.

My computer has been messing up for about four months or so and I honestly don't know why or what started it.

My computer BSODs often, usually for no reason.

Programs crash all the time. Most of them are unrelated to the others, e.g.: MSN crashes, iTunes crashes, games crash etc.

I get random errors from Windows.

Apart from that, I haven't really seen a decrease in my computer's speed and whatnot.

All help would be appreciated OK, what's your OS (operating system)? Do you have any firewalls/anti-virus programs? How old is your computer? Plus any other information.I too would like to know the answers to the above questions. ESPECIALLY what protection you have.
Do you get these errors in Safe Mode?
Does the BSOD give you any STOP errors? If so, what do they say?
How much RAM do you have?Quote from: Dark Blade on May 31, 2007, 01:23:36 AM

OS is Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2.
Firewalls?.. I don't think so and I have AVG but that hasn't found any infections.
My computer is no more than three years old.

How much RAM do you have?
Close to no protection
I haven't tried starting in Safe Mode.
It won't be too LONG til my computer BSODs again so I'll write down what it says next.

Intel
Pentium D 3GHz
1gb of RAM.

Hope that helps!Yes, next time you get a BSOD, pay attention to what it says.

And just for the heck of it, try updating AVG and scanning with it in Safe Mode.

Also, a firewall is important to have. You should have the one that comes with SP2, but you may want to look into getting ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Comodo (only have ONE firewall).

You may also want to try out a free memory test (for about 30 minutes or so) from www.memtest86.com

Failing memory is possible here. And so is overheating, so you may want to download PC Wizard and check out your temperatures. When was the last time you dusted out the inside of your PC?I'm still trying to figure out how to use memtest.. :s I'll get there some day.

I managed to take a dodgy photo of my latest BSOD: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/nekotali/P1040644.jpg

I now have Comodo and it isn't really doing much except for pick up non-hostile programs doing stuff. :s

Could you please explain what you mean by failing memory?

According to PC Wizard 07 my power/aux temp is 43 degrees Celsius and one of my harddrive's temp is 37 degrees Celsius.

The last time I dusted out the inside of my PC was never, haha. Am I meant to?Quote from: nekotali on June 05, 2007, 03:29:49 AM

RAM modules contain chips. These can get "flaky" and cause errors.

Quote

Fans and vents can get clogged up, don't use a vacuum cleaner on the cpu heatsink, you'll spin the FAN to destruction.

You might want to take a look at the following link...
http://www.tweaksforgeeks.com/IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.html

Common CAUSES of this (the BSoD you've shown) are an overheating CPU or bad RAM. I suspect the latter. When you've got failing memory, it usually means you have a RAM stick that went bad.

To use Memtest, you need to make a bootdisk. If you don't have a floppy drive, download the ISO so you can make a CD bootdisk with a program like Nero. If you need help with doing this, we can help you out.

You should definitely dust out the inside of your PC. If this PROBLEM is actually heat-related, the dust likely has something to do with it. Get a canister of compressed air and a paper mask and do your best to clean out the inside. Do not use a vacuum cleaner. While in there, be sure to take ESD precautions and check to make sure your RAM is properly seated. (Click here if you're not sure what a stick of RAM looks like.)

Once you're done dusting out your computer, I suggest you try running it for a couple of hours with the side panel off and see if you still get any errors. From the Mothership

Solve : Hourglass problem?

Answer»

I just got DSL, when I start & go to get into site this hourglass runs & won't let me. Seems like I wait forever. What could it be driving me crazy, have tried so many things.
I did delete the old dial up account but one of them sd can't delete, could this be doing it? ThanksAssuming you're using some version of Windows...

Go into Internet Options and select the Connections tab...

You should see a listing of your connections there...

Remove any accounts you no LONGER need except your DSL connection if it was installed from a CD...

If you need to connect to this account before browsing or sending email, make sure it is selected as the DEFAULT. If the connection is "always on" and you need not connect to it, make sure "Never Dial a Connection" is selected and then save your settings.

POST back with your results please...

Hope you found this useful.there is nothing in Internet options & the DSL was not installed w/CD.Actually when I go to start menu I can't get into anything even outlook until the hourglass stops. I have a strange feeling it's the file I couldn't delete, says protected. Strange part is my DSL is Embarq, my old dial up is Ewol, on top of this page & MY Embarq page both say PROVIDED BY EWOL! What do you make of that? The "provided by..." is just a leftover from the INSTALLATION from your previous ISP. Nothing to get worried about...actually, you can just disregard it and move on to your slow boot problem.

If your computer is slow to boot, you might want to take a look at running a Disk CLEANUP, first. Just use the default settings. Run that first. Once you're done, run a disk defrag as well. See if there is any improvement and post your results here please?

Solve : Get "Explorer (not responding)" in close program dialog box?

Answer»

First of all, I have Windows 98SE (yes, I know I should get a new computer but I want to save this OS for all the cool games I have that won't work with NEWER versions). Also, as you will probably figure out, I am pretty ignorant when it comes to computers.

I actually have several problems:

1) Every time I use the computer, at some point, I get "Explorer (not responding)" in close program dialog box and my computer freezes. Just before this happens, the computer starts to hum (almost like when you put a cd in the cdrom and autorun starts) and then it starts a clicking kind of noise. Sometimes when I close the program, it unfreezes and sometimes not in which case I have to shut down manually. When it unfreezes, the clicking stops. I think this is my biggest concern.

2) Also, the computer stopped recognizing that I have a cd-rom or a cd burner. It could see them in Safe Mode, but not is normal mode. According to one suggestion, DELETE them in safe mode and when the computer is rebooted, Windows will recognize them as new and reinstall them. This did not work. Now I don't know which driver to try to reinstall because I don't know the specs of the CD ROMs.

3) Sometimes, Windows does not load and I get a DOS screen that has a "C>" prompt not a C:\ . I am sorry that I don't remember the details, but it doesn't HAPPEN all the time. I do recall that it mentions something about "no device driver".

Things I've done to try and solve the problem:

1) Downloaded and RAN RegistryFix. This did not help at all.

2) Ran ScanDisk and Defrag.

3) Downloaded and ran virus software from AVG anti-virus from Grisoft. No viruses found.

4) Use Spybot regularly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. One last thing, I do not want to reformat my hard drive if I can avoid it because I have some digital pictures and lots of music that I would like to save if I can. Of course, without a CD burner, this is difficult to do. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Pattyas it always done this?? most older games will run on xp.... what games are theyMost of them are not well known, but I thought they were fun, and I'd like my kids to be able to play them. For example, Kings Quest, Legacy of Time, The 7th Guest, Amber, etc.

I am assuming they won't work on newer versions of Windows because my sister found this to be the case with her older games. But if the games will work then I would be glad to upgrade.go to there websites and seeWhenever "clicking" is involved, it seems to usually be a failing hard drive. I can't say for sure, THOUGH, because this isn't my area of expertise. However, if I were you, I would back all important data as soon as possible, just in case that thing is about to go south.

As for your games...you should be able to play them fine on XP. Just run them in Compatibility Mode for Windows 98. Right-click on the game file, go to Properties, click on the Compatibility Mode tab and choose Windows 98."...then it starts a clicking kind of noise." I agree with Chris, backup your data and replace the hard drive.

Clicking is not your friend.

Solve : Win98SE won't recognise DVD ROM drive?

I want to dual boot Win98SE with XPpro, and to do this I have to INSTALL Win98SE first. I have a new machine with an ASUS P5B motherboard (Dual DDR, S-ATA II, etc) and a clean HD which I have partitioned (4) and FORMATTED to FAT32.

Trouble is, Win98SE (and earlier OS's) won't recognise the fitted JMicron JMB 363 PATA/SATA PCI Express IDE controller, and tells me there is no CD-ROM drive fitted. The manufacturer's web site does not list any drivers for OS's prior to WinXP.

Solve : ANY hope at all??

Answer»

I've been working on my sister's hp 531w, running Windows XP. Since installing SP2, she gets a screen that says windows had shutdown unexpectedly previously and how would she like to start it? Gives "safe Mode", "reboot", several options - but when any of them are highlighted and entered you basically end up getting a blank screen.

I've tried to reboot it with CD-Rom, Floppy, USB Flash Drive but NOTHING works -- still same blank screen. I've used F5 and F9 (or 10) and been able to get in and check things out, but no changes help at all. I did SEE, however that it says "system fan - no function"..... does that mean it's not working at all? I sort of think I hear it, but it doesn't seem that loud to me. I do feel a 'little' air from it, but the other fan (Cooling fan) is working fine.

Can someone TELL me -- is there ANY way to get into the computer, reformat it, etc? It doesn't seem possible to me if I can't get the floppy, CD-Rom or anything else to pull up the information on those to reboot, restart, recover or anything, but is there another function I could use to get to a prompt even? Can we be clear what we mean by "System fan" and "cooling fan"? (All fans are cooling fans). If the CPU fan is stopped, it may be that the cpu is getting too hot and the system is shutting down to avoid damage. These models are KNOWN to have a weakness in the power supply. Is there a fan in there?

Why don't you open the case and take a look?

Is the BIOS set to boot from floppy/cd, and if so, is it BEFORE your harddrive?

If not, that might just be why you can't get it to boot to something else.

To get into BIOS, hit the button to get into setup whatever it may be.

I slid it into my computer and the light went on, I can hear it spin and everything. It kept spinning too. When I go to my computer there is no cd drive. When i go to device manager there is no cd drive. When I go to install new hardware there isnt even a section of cd drive software to browse through. When go to my BIOS it is there, but in windows there is not a trace. There is no "ding ding" sound when i PLUG it in or anything. But it still spins and has power and WHATNOT. Please help. Solve : system is very slow after format?

Answer»

Hi,

My sytem is very slow after format ,
Antivirus -AVG

OS-Windows Xp Proffesional

Sneha

If you just formatted your hard drive and did a reinstallation of the operating system...there may be a PROBLEM with the hard drive.

Here is my recommendation...

1) Determine the manufacturer of your hard drive.

2) Go to the manufacturer's web site...locate and download their installation software for your hard drive.

3) Low-level format the drive, writing zeros to all sectors of the drive...this will take some time depending on the size of he drive.

4) Re-partition and format the drive.

5) Reinstall the operating sysytem.

I recommend the above...only if you experienced the problem immediately following a reinstallation of your operating system.

Apparently...something went wrong during installation...or there may be some corrupt files or damaged hard drive sectors...this is only an assumption and should be treated as such.

You may receive other opinions here within this thread...I recommend you take heed to them.Did you re-install all your drivers after the format ? ?
Start with the motherboard ones first...if you don't have a driver CD that came with that machine ( we still don't know what type of machine it is ) and re-boot.

Then sound, video etc....In addition to what patio has posted...

Please provide us with as much information as you can about your computer system...

Patio REFERRED to your drivers...good point...check your DEVICE Manager through CONTROL Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager to SEE if there is any hardware requiring drivers.

Hopefully you have a driver disk that came with your system. If not, you may have to search the manufacturer's website for any drivers that pertain to the specific make and model of your hardare as they pertain to your computer's operating system.

PS , this is genunie im afrAID his system will crash.Illegal INSTALLATIONS won't install windows updates or service packs. That leaves his system extremely vulnerable to attacks, worms, viruses, trojans, and the like.
Some programs like Office may not install. Office won't install updates either. Again, leaving his system vulnerable.also depending on where you get the copy it might come with a host of infections which in turn will be hard on the system and you. many help forums(like this) wont help anyone one with illegal copies of software on their computers...

and of course, as already mentioned .......... the latest updates are not available unless the software passes the WGA test .

Solve : Driver Download?

Answer»

Ideally where should I mean the location or folder drivers from net be downloaded, I have Windows 98SE & Windows XP on seperate partitions.
Thanks!
Prakash DaneUsually, you'll download the driver in a zipped file to your desktop...

You have two OPERATING systems...so depending on which operating system you've booted into..you'll download the RESPECTIVE driver to the desktop of the operating system you are CURRENTLY using...double-click the zipped driver file to begin extraction and it should extract itself to the appropriate directory. If not you can specify where you want to extract the driver to by using the following based on the operating system you are using. When you install or update the driver, you can specify where the file is by using the following:

For Windows 98 it will most likely be Windows/system/drivers

For Windows XP it will most likely be Windows/system32/drivers

I hope you found this information useful...In ADDITION to the above, larger drivers are supplied as an executable program file.
Just double click it to begin the install process.

Solve : where is system info stored??

Answer»

How can you get system info from a hard drive taken from another system without booting into it?
For example, I have some hard drives that have 2k or xp installed on them. I put them into an external harddrive so I can back up data from them or just view the contents. Sometimes I lose track of which computer they came out of. How can I find the computer name, domain, ip address, etc. from them? Is this info stored in a file on the drive, or in the registry?Don't have an answer to your question but a suggestion. Each time I pull a drive from a machine I label it..where it came from / OS, etc. Saves on the gray matter later

Alan <>< ya... that's a smart idea. Unfortunately I didn't think about that one until I had hdd's from 5 DIFFERENT PCS Quote from: michaewlewis on June 05, 2007, 03:44:43 PM

You could slave them, and then look at the files on them.

If you've got IDE drives, you can get two on each chain, so presuming you have 2 IDE controllers, you could check 3 drives at a time, seeing as you'll be leaving the primary master alone (C:).Quote from: Sid on June 06, 2007, 03:13:03 PM

Didn't I already say I have them connected (via usb)? I can't boot with them, if that's what you mean. Some are windows 2k and I have different hardware. Booting with them wouldn't work at all.
Windows Registry contains all INFORMATION about system.

Forensic examination tools such as EnCase allow examination of registry files.

Example

Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

HKLM contains per-computer (computer-specific) settings which apply to all users logging into that particular
computer.

Subkey HARDWARE

Stores information regarding hardware Windows XP detects during startup. The subkeys are
dynamically created during system startup. They include information on device driver and
associated resources. So can you access the registry for a system on a different hdd that's not booted?
If so, how?
Look in \Windows\System32\Config on the slave drive for a file called software.sav

You need to read this. It TELLS you all you need to know.

http://www.asociacion-aecsi.es/doc/Network/Microsoft_Windows_XP_Registry_Guide.pdf

Thanks, I'll have a look at it...
By the way, what search terms did you use? Thanks,Well, I typed "Examine registry slave disk" into Google minus the quotes, I already knew about software.sav so I added that as well

registry slave disk software.sav

gives some handy looking links

Not what I meant at all. And what you said before was about as clear as mud, but anyway.

A slave won't be what you boot from. But when you do have a system, any system, up and running, you should be able to view what is on the slaved drive. So if there were certain documents on the computer that gave a clue as to where it came from, then you wouldn't have to F around with the registry.

Solve : Hibernation on a Laptop?

Answer»

I was using my father's laptop and surfing the internet when it popped up with "preparing to hibernate". I was on a site i always go to with no trouble and i've done it a million times on his computer so i don't think it was the site. i wasn't inactive for more than about 10 seconds, and the only other thing i was on was a guide for a game i always go to, even on his computer. So his laptop HIBERNATED and now it won't turn back on. i press the power BUTTON and nothing. i cannot CONCEIVE how else to turn the damned thing on, any suggestions? fyi i've never USED hibernate so i know virtually nothing about it.

edit: i tried again. I noticed that every time i push the power button, the battery light blinks...but i've GOT the adapter plugged into the laptop and it's been plugged in, giving it power, all day. in fact, it was in when this happened so *censored*?Tried spacebar to wake it up? Or move the mouse a bit.

Sounds like there might be a problem if it went into hibernation while plugged in, was there power to the plug it's pluged into? Is the lead ok? Normally laptops are configured to switch to hibernation to save battery power.

You can adjust the settings in the system part of control pannel I do believe.Sounds like the AC adapter has gone bad. It failed to charge the battery so when the battery got low it hibernated. Of course, the adapter might just be unplugged.

But I don't know what it's like on a German keyboard, but I think that the Print Screen key should be around the same spot. Just look at the keys around the one I'm showing.

On German keyboards, the key with DRUCK is the same as the Print Screen key on English language layouts

Solve : Please Help. Harddrive file type problem.?

Answer»

Please help me!!!! I GET an error message saying "C:\ access denied" everytime I double click my harddrive icon.

I was changing the icons in the "file type" tab of the "folder options" window. I supposed I made a mistake or something; because afterwards, I noticed that my "Local Disk (C:)" icon does not take me to C:\ anymore. It searches instead. At this point, I still could open "Local Disk (C:)" by right clicking and selecting "Open" in a dropdown menu.

However, I didn't like the idea that I had to do this open "C:\." So I went BACK to "folder options" "file type" tab and selected drive. I did not know "find" was supposed to be default. So, I created "Open" by clicking advanced and then new. I TYPED:

Action: Open
Application used to perform action: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe
use DDE [checked]
Application: Windows Explorer
Topic:Drive

*Note: windows will not allow me to go back and change the "Open" file type information.

I am still able to get to one of my harddrive's information by entering through the "My Documents" shortcut. I just want to be able to double click my harddrive icons again!!! *cries*

what does it mean?If you're going to ask for help, please be clear about exactly what you want.I searched Ghost and Hard Drive in Google, and it CAME up with a program called Norton Ghost. It relates to disk partions and hard drives and ghosts (which is all that I COULD gather from the garbled responses).I searched Ghost in hard disk and found a backup program....

We're clearly just guessing here. Lets wait and see what the OP says...Well, I've seen him lurking around for a while, but he hasn't replied.Ghost is an imaging program for backing up partitions/drives...it was bought by Norton before Symantec purchased Norton.

In it's day it was the best alternative out there...Still is pretty good, I Ghost my Windows partition once a week. I've tried various other alternatives, but I've always come back to Ghost.

So where is the OP??You can just GUESS - as far away from CH as possible.

Solve : File Explorer, how do I get folders always on left and files on right??

Answer»

In Windows 2000, in the File Explorer, I can GO View->Explorer Bar->Folders and the left side of the screen shows folders whilst the right side of the screen shows what's in those folders.

I can also go Tools->FOLDER Options->View->Like Current Folder. This should record my preference to show the folders on the left always, whenever I open File Explorer.

Problem:- that doesn't happen. If I open "My Documents" it uses the default view. LIKEWISE if I set up a shortcut to a folder, it uses the default view.

Can I change something in the registry so that the default view always has the folders on the left? Please help.I'm using XP so this might be different. That PARTICULAR option cannot be remembered by the OS from what I can TELL. I just tried it here on XP and it didn't remember that for me.May be shortcut refers directly to explorer.exe which you can't customise.

No I have not. Do you suggest this? How do I do it?i think you need an original windows xp cd that should have come with your computer. the computer i BOUGHT didn't really come with it, so you could try borrowing one from someone or obtaining it by other means if you don't have one.

another option could be to try pressing f8 when your computer is booting up and trying safe mode.

there is a way to reinstall windows as well. depending on what version of xp you have you could go to the microsoft website and download the startup disk maker. it'll need about 4-6 formatted floppy's, but they should reinstall windows for you.

i FOUND out this info cause im facing a similar problem Quote from: plzineedhelpbad on June 17, 2007, 07:26:28 PM

if it find errors and fixes them, then that could solve your problem!

Solve : Computer hangs up and does'nt start windows?

Answer»

on reading this post, made me think of the situation we are having here at work. We use all pc Windows XP professional. 3 computer are behaving strangely, They are all the same model one and purchased around the same time. Make IBM Netvista. Initially these machines were on Windows 2K but for about 3 years now we are using windows XP.
This is going to be a long one,I am not sure if i am POSTING this in the right section of the fourm whether it is a virus problem or a windows problem.
at start one of these computers started hanging up when the person was working on it. Then at that time even using ctr+Alt+Delete did not work to bring up the Task manager to end the programme. Then we noticed the problem became more when we tried to use outlook or connect to the internet. Then windows would never start up.the Window XP screen with the little blue dots running across up but we don't SEE the dots moving as when windows is loading. It is just stuck and would REMAIN like that for hours. Now two other computer as i mentioned earlier are having the same problem.
These machines are connected to the Corporate network. and are on line all the time. AV being used is Symantec Corporate edition version 9 with updates being sent via the corporate server also Windows updates come that way.
Occasionally we manage to get one of the machines started up and can do some work, but it stall in between and remains that way. The people who are using that machine are also stupid they are in such a hurry and switch off the machine manually without waiting, I am wondering if they could have corrupted the windows system by doing that. Or could their be a virus problem. I am very sure that one of the computers was well protected with the antispyware programmes like spybotS&D and Adaware, also had windows defender runing in the backround. But I feel these were not being updated and run routinely.
the possiblity of downloading any patches is out as these computer will lock up when connected to the net
Any suggestions or helpfull ideas. By the way my systems adminstrator has looked at them and says that some one has installed some new hardware. But we know very well that nothing has been done as such.

cheers
The Saint.
So all 3 of these computers lock up during the windows loading screen? How often are any of them able to boot up successfully? Are you able to get into safe mode?

Gizmo73This one while trying to get in to safe mode, all the Dos info comes up but nothing happens after that it just stalls. I forgot to mention that when started the Active desktop never comes up and keeps showing the white screen with the message to restore active desktop every time it starts up. So we just use the computer as it is till it hangs. It happens even if the internet is not connected. They boot up at no particular time.

Thanks

The_Saintthis part of your note sums it up very well

( they are in such a hurry and switch off the machine manually without waiting, I am wondering if they could have corrupted the windows system by doing that.)

this practice causes is a lot of damage, files do not get saved, connections do not get closed, programs do not get closed, hard drives are stopped before data is stored as well as before the heads can get into the safe positions. I would suspect that each drive and operating system on the drive has been corrupted as well as possible damage to other components which have not been ALLOWED to close or cool down correctly.
You could try a repair installation of Windows XP the method from here will be a GOOD guide

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

you will require the installation disks, that is a start then you have to hope for the rest of the computers to be ok, then get the persons who screwed the pc's re-educated or give them really older computers to work with i would boot of a windows CD and goto command prompt, then run

CHKDSK C: /F

this should find some errors and fix corruptions. hopefully your machine will boot again.

Thanks..the existing account was the administrator account but was changed to limited so now that is the only one there. Therefore i cant even add new user as dont have privelage to do so.. you should be ABLE to access the back-up administrator account. You should be able to press Ctrl+alt+del when you get to the login screen. In the username box, type in "Administrator" and it should login.
