Solve : Some Windows XP Profiles Will Not Log In?

Answer»

I went onto my regular account today and I had to download Direct X to view something, when I downloaded it it also came with something called SpyCrush which would not go away and began diagnosing my computer with all these viruses my professional spyware and virus detectors never found so I knew it was bogus and it kept bringing up it's stupid website on IE and it was going nuts so I had to improper shutdown before my computer lagged out, when I came on, it SAID something like this

"One or more of your personalized SETTINGS cannot be LOADED. Please contact the SYSTEM administrator if this problem persists."

What does this mean and how do I fix it to get back onto my main account? I'm on the Guest account right now which is working.Where did you get this version of DirectX ? ?

Spy Crush is scum-ware...

Somehow i believe there is more to it than this.

Can you do a system restore prior to this point ? ?

If not you need to run all your protection apps preferably in safe MODE and then dload and run HijackThis. DON"T let it fix anything yet....save the log as a text file and post it in our Virus and Spyware section.

I done a Google search for DirectX downloads and the first few pages of the sites it linked to were fine (I stopped going through them at page 3)... In no way should it have been accompanied by SpyCrush (or anything else for that matter)

Where did you download it from?

Hence my observation...

Solve : Windows Media Player 10 on XP?

Answer»

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and recently bought an mp3 player that needs to work with Windows Media Player 10. I had WMP 11 so uninstalled it, so it went back to the version that came with my computer which is Windows Media Player 9. When trying to install Windows Media Player 10, it kept saying that it isn't compatible with my version of windows which I know for a FACT is not true because I had been running it for years before upgrading to 11.

Why is it saying this and what can I do? Windows Media Player 10 was MADE for XP yet its saying it isn't even compatible!

Please reply as I am getting very, very frustrated.

ThanksFirstly, and MP3 player that says its compatible with Windows Media Player 10 (WMP), is compatible with WMP 11...

SECONDLY, go into your Control Panel
Start>Settings>Control Panel

Then go to Add/Remove programs

Then click the "Windows Components" tab

And find Windows Media Player (It might be under accessories)

Deselect it (if its already selected), and select it again. Click OK or Apply.
Be prepared to put in your Windows installation disk. (If your computer only came with a restore CD, then you probably wont need the install disk)

This should restore it back.

I've tried this and it made no difference.

The PROBLEM isn't that Windows Media Player itself isn't working as Windows Media Player 9 is running fine, and Windows Media Player 11 runs fine aswell. The problem is that Windows Media Player 10 won't install because it comes up with this message:

"This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows."

which is completely untrue.

The reason I need WMP10 is because it's the only Windows Media that works with the Philips GoGear plugin for PICTURE syncing, as WMP11 seems syncs the pictures, but it just doesnt work. I've found all over the internet on forums like this that it only works with WMP10, but when I try to install 10, it says it doesnt work with Xp....

any suggestions why that might be?Just to clarify:

The directions I gave you (above) does not run the installer that you download from the internet. It uses the Windows XP Windows Component Installer

This installer uses a different installation technique. (More of forces the files it needs into place)

Are you using any software that changes the Windows User Interface? (eg: Windows Blinds)
If so, try uninstalling it. There is a possibility that it could have changes some information relating to the Windows Version Test.

Other than that, I WOULD blame file corruption.
Click Start> Run
type
sfc /scannow

Be sure you have your Windows XP installation disk.

Solve : icon changing?

Answer»

I want to change my icons without using shortcuts.

When I change my icons through the tools>folder options>file types some of the icons I change turn into windows SEARCH. How do I change icons without this happening?

Operating Sys: XPQuantumSpectre......... Could you provide an example of exactly what icon you wish to change ...and what icon you wish to change it to.

dl65 I would like to change file type icons, hard drive icons, and other hardware icons (cd-rom drive; etc). I want to change these icons to a new set of icons that I downloaded.

I've successfully changed this icons in the past, but I had to system restore because of adverse effects. Some of the icons I changed automatically switch their association to windows search.

I've tried changing icons this way before
windows explorer menu bar tools>folder options>files types...(then selecting and changing icons). But each resulted in me having to system restore. I was locked out of my hard drive when I changed that icon. I could only search.

How can I change all of my icons without receiving this adverse effect?

Thank you.

P.S. Let me know if I should be more specific.

QuantumSpectre ........ I just did a quick bit of research on your issue and from what I have seen and read, it can be done ok, HOWEVER usually there is a detailed set of instructions included in the d/l to walk you through the changes .

Which set of icons did you d/l ? please provide a link to it if you would .

dl65 I downloaded the icons from: 2s-Space.com

more specifically: http://www.2s-space.com/studiov2/download_icons.asp?did=1
I downloaded the: Darkness Windows Icons
Format: ico

*notices the smiley* ...sorry, hope this is not too much trouble.QuantumSpectre ..... well , I just d/led that set and changed the icon on my test machine to what is called the hard drive icon ....with no problems ..... ( BTW thats a tower icon ....not a hard drive ) ........ and I followed your instructions ......

dl65 Some icons and file types I can change without the problem occuring; however if I change the drive icon display. When I click on (c:) from windows explorer it searches.

Any idea why my computer is doing this instead of working correctly?
Do you know how I can fix it? QuantumSpectre.......

Solve : windows xp pro setup failure?

Answer» HI, I've been trying to install WINDOWS xp on a ELITEGROUP notebook after the windows crashed on the PREVIOUS HD, but when the windows setup STARTS to copy files, at halfway from the end it stops(the file coppying) and projects the filename couldn't copy and says for exemple:( the file printui.dll wasn't copied corrrectly. The file setup on your HD is not a valid windows xp image. ther may be a problem with the CD).
I have to mention that the CD is new and genuine, ELITEGROUP laptop with windows xp pro,632 RAM, intel pentium M, new WD HD, i also noticed that the files It wouldn't copy are with dll, extentions,THANK you for your help.Try cleaning the CD with a soft clean lint-free cloth.

Also if there are any power saving features in the BIOS as there usually are in laptops turn them all off temporarily.

And use the AC plug instead of the battery til you are installed.

Was the laptop having any shutdown issues prior to this ? ?

Solve : Unable to access My Documents on another harddrive?

Answer»

I built a new Athlon 64 bit computer and installed Windows XP on a new SATA hard drive to be used as my primary drive.

I now cannot access the My Documents of my previous Windows profile on my previous Western Digital ATA hard drive.

A friend told me that I should change the jumper settings on the old unaccessible hard drive to the slave settings and I should then be able to access my previous profiles My Documents. When I change the jumper settings the old hard drive is not recognized by my new computer. The new computer only seems to recognize my old hard drive when I have no jumper settings in place.

The profile that I'm trying to access was password protected.

How can I gain access to my old profile? I was thinking that maybe I would have to reinstall or repair Windows XP (so that the old hard drive will boot with the new 64 bit processor, it will not if I just try to boot up with the original Windows installation) and hope that all my information doesn't get erased, but no one I know can give me a clear answer on this.

Please help.Have you ATTEMPTED temporarily removing the SATA and seeing if the IDE will boot as it used to ? ?

Remember...no jumpers.Yes, it was one of the first things I tried after putting together the new hardware.

I think that there is a conflict with the original DRIVES Window settings for a 32 bit processor setting, that will not allow it to boot my new 64 bit hardware.

This is why I think that maybe a reinstall or repair of Windows on the original hard drive might allow me to access my files.

Of course I have yet to do this as I am afraid that either the rep or rein will erase the files I wish to access. There is a program out there to get around parts of it (sorry no name off the top of my head) but the easiest way is to throw it in the old MACHINE and remove the password from the account. If that is possible anyways, i wonder if something like y copy could copy it to a new install..... but thats just thinking out loud.I tried to pop it into the old machine, but the power supply had died by the time I got around to doing so.Quote

The profile that I'm trying to access was password protected.
Help me understand correctly...is this part of the problem or not the issue ? ?

Does the MY Documents folder show up when both drives are connected ? ?

If so Try This...I'm unsure if this is, or is not, part of the problem. I'm just trying to PROVIDE all information that I think may be relevant.

Although I do "think" it may be part of the problem, I am not sure.

C:\Documents and Settings\ is the folder I can open and see.

C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name) is the folder I can see but am unable to access.

Using the information from the link you provided I was able to access the folder C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name) but I am now unable to proceed further within the Desktop, Favorites, or My Documents folders.

I'm going to try and reboot my computer into safe mode and see if I'll be able to get further from there. Okay, so I rebooted in safe mode and was still unable to access the folders I wanted to by just clicking.

But I was able to erase the previous user account that held permissions for the files I wanted which allowed me further access into the folder.

This got me into the next layer of folders, but again I was unable to proceed further then that.

I decided to fiddle around with steps 1 - 3 again on this new folder;

Quote
1.Right-click the folder that you WANT to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
2.Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
3.Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

Although when I clicked on the Security tab I received this message, "You do not have permission to view or edit the current permission settings for (Folder Name), but you can take ownership or change audit settings."

Deciding to forge on through I clicked on Advanced, then the Owner tab, chose my profile and checked the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" box. This allowed me full access.

The only problem with this is that I now have to do this with each other folder. But hey I'm not able to access all my junk.

Thank you everyone for your replies and helpful advice. So are things better...or worse ?

On the bright side this may get you into a regular backup routine for your important data...

I use and highly recommend Acronis True Image.

Worst case scenario i'm one week away from any data loss. Works for me.Oh it's better, sorry about the typo at the end it should say, "I am able to access all my junk".Good to hear...stop by anytime.

Solve : Converting musicfiles with dBAmp slows down PC!! Normal??

Answer»

When converting musicfiles from a given format to MP3 with dBAmp(version 12), I can't do anything else on the PC besides waiting until the conversion is ready, and when trying it takes "hours" before other programs open and the Net I just can forget...

I have 1024Mb RAM, 3200Mhz PC AMD 64 Athlon, XP complete with SP2 and the patches/updates, IE60...

Might there be something wrong with the RAM?

Is dbPowerAmp set to 'high priority' when you are converting?
-that will slow it down a lot.

If it isn't, I wouldn't be worried anyway, would seem normal when converting media.

COOL, will have a check, thanks didnt find such an option, sorry Ignore it.
That's normal behaviour - DBPowerAmp will use all of your CPU to convert files in the minimum time and with the bets QUALITY possible.
It's best to leave it alone when it's converting or you RISK errors in your music, such as skipping.Keep in mind the 3 more taxing things a computer does for you are video, audio and burning... i try to schedule these PROJECTS for when i'm sleeping.

Solve : programs list?

Answer»

On a Windows XP pc with service pk2, there are many programs which are installed in control panel, but they do not SHOW up under the start button/programs list. How do you make all installed programs show in the programs list?if you GO to the BOTTOM of the all programs menu there should be a ARROW to allow you to continue VIEWING whats in the menu or it will be on the top
It is not that the window is not showing what is there, there is nothing listed in the programs list. If I go to control panel and add/remove programs, all of the programs are installed. They just do not show up in the programs list or under the start menu/ programs list. The files show under C;\program files, but these are not the .exe files for starting the programs.when did this start??Some things, such as certain installed device drivers, may appear in Add or Remove Programs but not in your Programs list. For example, my Add or Remove Programs panel shows NVIDIA Drivers but that is not on the Programs list because it not really a "program". Can you give one or more examples from your system?

So i switched about the boot order to MAKE it boot from the c drive and it tells me there is no bootable device. I was pretty sure that the windows xp disk WAS bootable, and im at a loss as to why it wont do it. Any and all responses are very much appreciated. yes my cd-rom drive, sorryLets clear up some terms for you:
CD-ROM, or CD Drive: The CD drive is in your laptop. Its usualy on the right or left hand side. When you push the button on it, it pops out

Hard Disk, Hard Drive, or HDD: The Hard Drive stores large amounts of information. It cannot be removed without taking apart a piece of your computer.

You are trying to boot from the CD-ROM drive on your laptop.

Change the boot order to IDE-CD ROM (or just CD-Rom) and have the second boot OPTION the C:\ Hard Drive

Or, press F12 right when your computers BIOS screen loads (when the computer logo is displayed when you start your computer)
It will most likely prompt you to choose a startup drive. Select the IDE CD-ROM drive if its there, or just CD-ROM drive
How do you know he's got a laptop, Zylstra?
Contrex,
It really doesn't matter if it is a laptop or not because it will be the same except for the physical location of the CD-ROM drive.

Lchris217,
Your disc might be scratched. It might be the disc drive that has the issue so if you are using a desktop and you have multiple disc drives try PUTTING the disc into another drive and then change the boot order so that drive is first.Quote from: contrex on June 21, 2007, 12:54:51 PM

Hmm... I thought I read in the OP's post that it was.
(Strange)
So either my non-existent psychic powers have kicked in, or something is wrong in my headI first thought it was a desktop computer....There's no indication whatsoever of what type of computer it is. Desktop, laptop, server, palmtop, home entertainment, nada. I expect it's irrelevant anyway. My bad for bringing it up.

Solve : Cannot rename text files using anymore XP pro / RESOLVED?

Answer»

Hi! Can ANYONE help with a problem I am having. I am running XP Pro on an Acer, Travelmate laptop. Everything has been running fine until 2 DAYS ago when the pc stopped ALLOWING me to change the name of text & word files using the rename facility. Example I right click on a text doc (notepad) then click rename on the context menu, type new name & I get the following dialogue box

"If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?" Yes No.

If I do click yes it makes the file unusable.

I have tried everything. For some reason all my restore points had disappeared also? File checker, Scannow, CHKDSK etc etc all FIND no problems with my OS.

Any advice would be welcome OTHERWISE I am going to have to restore my OS, & I really dont want to have to.When you rename the file, are you putting in the .TXT or .DOC on at the end?

Sounds like you have XP set to show file extensions.Thats sorted the problem instantly. I feel like a prat now, but sometimes you just cant spot these things yourself & I dont know how that got turned on.

I'm just relieved the pc is working again.

Many thanks again

HenryNo need to feel like a prat... I have that option switched on and I constantly forget to put the file extension in when I'm renaming files

Glad we could helpTo make XP hide the file extensions again go to Control Panel> Folder Options> View and without moving the slide bar at the right check the box at the bottom of the menu labeled "Hide extensions for known file types". That should hide the file extensions from you so you don't accidentally change them.

This is what it looks like: (Look at the pointer/arrow)
I have that option on by choice ... I just forget I've got it on haha

Solve : Graphics and/or sound driver missing after cold restart?

Answer»

Hi,

Just the other day I installed a GIGABYTE Iram into my PC as my main disk, along with a SATA HDD to store the Documents and Settings folder.

I have successfully configured the COMPUTER to use this folder, installed all programs and copied files over and all seems fine.

However, when I start up the PC, about half the time the control panel and drivers fail to LOAD for the sound and/or GRAPHICS card, reinstalling them causes the device to work on the next boot.

In device manager the relevant devices show as PRESENT with error code 39 - Device driver cannot load because it is corrupt or missing.

For the soundcard, when the PC is shut down a message box appears stating that the program is not responding displays with the EXE of the program that runs in the taskbar, with the option to End Now.

I have tried upgrading the sound and downgrading the graphics, and uninstalling and reinstalling the devices, no effect.

I cant think of anything else to try, to be honest this has me completely stumped.

Any ideas?

Solve : Hotfix Uninstallers?

Answer»

I reticently updated my computer running XP Pro to SP2 and I ran CCleaner and it came up with 195MB of Hotfix Uninstallers. I am VERY limited on space because my computer has a pathetic HDD so would it be advisable to delete them to free up space?Generally it is OK to uninstall the $NTUninstaller$ files but do so at your own risk...

Normally what i do is wait at least 3 weeks of average to above average usage of the machine after a hotfix and make sure it's not a "hotbreak"...

If you have a burner you could also burn them to CD for reference if need be.

Hard drives are fairly REASONABLE right now...i'd consider going shopping soon.

A Perfect Example of a hotfix gone bad happened recently so you may want to rethink this.If I burn them to a CD I can still use them if I need to ?I've done this before. There's one uninstaller you shouldn't delete, for some reason, and I can't remember which one it is...sorry. The thing I did was zip them all up and move them to the zip file RETAINING the path INFORMATION and then SIT for two weeks and see if everything is stable. Then I used a specialize program to delete them painstakingly, rather than having to go through each of them one at a time in Add/Remove. If/when you do remove the uninstallers, don't do it through Add/Remove Programs. This would uninstall the hotfixes. You need to manually delete the appropriate folders first. And then you can use Add/Remove Programs to delete the entries.

I imagine you'd be able to use these after backing them up to a CD, but I've never done it, so I can't say for sure. Thanks guys.No problem. If you have any trouble, just let us know.

Solve : Start up Problem. Help plz?

Answer»

Hi. First of all, i'm new to this forum. I've been looking all over this site to find a solution to my computer problem but didn't find anything

My issue:
My cousin let me have a computer because he messed it up somehow. When i turn it on, it goes to the screen that says that the computer had been shut down improperly. And it gives you the option of choosing how you want it to start up (Safe mode, Last known good configuration, etc.). When i choose to start up normally, the screen turns black and nothing else happens. When i choose safe mode, a list pops out that say system32/......bla bla. and then all of a sudden it just stops and freezes there.
Any ideas on how i could fix this? Do i need to reboot the computer? if so, can you please give me steps or a link on how to do this?

Thanks. I would really APPRECIATE it if someone could spend some of their time to help me out.

Edit- I have no info. on what the computer is made up of. It has a Windows 98 and pentium iii sticker on it so i'm guessing that's what it runs.Hello

If you dont plan on needing any of the existing files, the easiest solution would be to ask your cousin for the System Restore CD (unless you have it already)

Go ahead and do a total reformat, this will destroy all currently existing data, nothing will be saved (This means that all music, PHOTOS, documents, etc. will be deleted)

If you do need to keep the files, then we can skip the reformat:
What antivirus is installed?

What happens when you select "Last Good Configuration"?

When you go into Safemode, have you tried letting it just sit for around 5 minutes?

What happened prior to the incident? Quote from: Zylstra on June 20, 2007, 12:37:22 AM

Yea i've tried leaving it in safemode for quite a while and it just stays there.

Last good config just goes onto a black screen.

Being that the boot menu is displayed, Windows is located on the main Hard Drive [partition] and is bootable without a problem. No devices are interrupting So i'm going to have to buy a windows cd to make this computer work?

I was looking around and noticed how some people use a boot diskette, or something like that. Would that work in my situation?

If i were to buy a windows cd, would it be better for me to get windows xp or windows 98 (that's what the computer originally had)?you could ask around and see if you could borow a friends copy. I have donr this countless times. if you were to get a new windows c.d, you should re format your computers hard drive. do this if ur experienced
Ok, im going to ask around to see if anyone has one. Since the comp. has a windows98 sticker on it, does that mean that i have to find a win 98 cd?

When i do get the cd, i just put it in and it will start by itself?

Thank you everyone for helping me out.Sorry, just got lost in the world of diagnosing:
Which operating system are you using?

(All possibilities:
ME, 2000, and XP)
On the computer i'm on now, windows xp. On the one i'm trying to fix, it's win 98.

But i tried something new with it. Since the hard drive is the one having a problem, i replaced it with another hard drive that i had laying around. I put it on and it STARTED working PERFECTLY.
EDIT- If you think this was a RETARDED move, please let me know.

Since the only way of fixing the other one is using the win 98 cd, i'll wait til i find someone that could let me borrow it, and maybe i'll change the hard disk back with its original.

THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED!!!!!! If it's a Win98 machine you probably don't want to waste money putting XP on it...to patio,

this is true because windows x.p might not work with it any way if it is designed for windows 98.

Solve : Share Violation Notice?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600), a Dell Inc. Dimension 4700. Also have IE6, SP2.

When I go to Tools, Internet Options, Settings, and View objects, among the items in there is Hotmail Att… I sometimes go here to update the items in there. The Hotmail shows it as installed but total size is None.

When I try to update it, nothing happens. When I right-click and try to REMOVE it, I get a message box. In the Title Bar it shows Share Violation, and in the box itself it shows: These Program Files are currently being used by one or more programs. Please close some programs and try again. You MAY need to restart Windows.

This has not done this before. But I have done a few restores over the past month, so guess something happened.

Anyone know how I may get rid of that Share Violation notice? Thanks much.
What main goal are you trying to accomplish?

From what I understand, you are trying to remove the Hotmail Object in Internet Explorer. Is this correct?

Solutions:
Core part of IE. Cannot be removed (not an addon)Thank you for your answer.

It is the Hotmail Attachments Control, and I should be able to delete it as I have different times before. I just deleted PC Pit stop okay, as I will not be using it for a while.

As I said, I sometimes update them but since this had None in the Total Size, I knew something was wrong. It would not update, as the rest of them do, and when I try to delete it I get that Violations message.

When I go to Tools, Internet Options, Settings, View Objects, it takes me to the Downloaded Program Files, which is where Hotmail Attachments Control is.

Not sure what is meant by this: "Solutions:
Core part of IE. Cannot be removed (not an addon)"

All items can be removed, generally. Just for some reason, having problems with this one.

Any other solutions?

Good to see you back...been awhile.

Have you tried to remove it in safemode ? ?

Safemode only loads the bare minimum of programs and processes for XP to function.
To get into safemode hit F8 repeatedly as the machine is starting and before you see the Windows logo...

Post back if this doesn't do it.Sometimes the freeware program
UNLOCKER will WORK for deleting.
Below is direct link. Good Luck!

After you install read the...readme file then proceed.
I had tried that once before and got the same Share Violation. Just tried it again and still got the Share Violation message. Thanks for the info, though. It is almost 1:30 AM and I have to scoot to dreamland.

Thank you for the information. I do have Unlocker and use it often. But when I right click on the Hot Mail Attachment, I only get the choices of
Update, Remove, and Properties. It does not give the Unlock choice. Again, when I try to update, it will not do it, and when I try to remove it, I get that Share Violation Message. In the Properties Dependency tab, it shows it as damaged.

Solve : Unable to shut down computer?

Answer»

hi guys.

I've encounted a problem on my NEW com. I can't seem to shut it down. When ever i try to shut down(start > turn off computer), my applications on the 'notification area' will begin to close until there's only the wireless internet connection icon left, then it will just stay there. I've left it for a hour and it stays the same. If i keep tryin to shut it down, it will either

1) Proceed to try to shut down (goes to the welcome screen) and will hang at "Windows is Shutting down"

OR

2) BSOD.

Windows Xp SP2.
Gigabyte DS3
C2D E6600 (stock)
2 GB RAM
XFX 7900 GTO

No spyware, viruses and what not. No overheating on mobo, gfx card etc.

Newest mobo drivers, all drivers are up to date actually. System restore does not work. Tried almost all restore points.

Did anything of importance happen prior to the issue?

(New software)

try disabling the network first by right clicking on it and select properties. then click on disable, if this does'nt work io cant help you.

programming_patThanks for the reply guys.

Hmm.. The only major change i know of is the updating of my BIOS. But even if i revert it to my old bios. The problem still persist. I've encountered this problem for quite some time already. But it wasn't so bad last time. Last time i just have to shut it down twice(Start > turn off) in order to shut down the computer. No hanging at "Welcome screen", no BSOD.

My friend told me to shut down my computer by going to the task manager and hold ctrl while pressing shut down. Well it works but is it the proper way for me to shut down my computer?it is the unsafe way of shutting down your computer so you could lose important data. This way works but make sure no background programs are running and you havent got any visible programs running. Quote

How have you determined this ? ? ?To paito:

Did a spyware scan, hijackthis . Scanned my computer with Avast anti virus and my policy of not installing any suspicious programs limit my computer likely-ness of GETTING infected with malicious stuff.

As for overheating. I use Everest to take a look at my computer temp and all (HDD, gfx card, ram and processor ) were under 50 degrees Celsius.

If that is not adequate. Would u mind advising me on what next to do in order to really make sure that my claims are correct.

To programming_pat:

Is losing data the only worry? Cause i mainly use that computer to play games. I do not do any work on it, thats why ppl have a lappy .

Thanks again guys.

as long as you have a small backup of all of your games saved files that will be ok. 50 degrees Celsius is... 122 Fahrenheit

Thats an okay temperature, but it could be less.
(Unless its a laptop, then its fine)

This is most likely not the problem though.

Pressing CTRL while shutting down basically means that you are not allowing any grace period for the applications to exit PROPERLY. What programming_pat said is completely correct. Holding down CTRL while shutting down should only be used for diagnosing problems, and for occasions when applications disagree with you....

Try this:
Shutdown the computer like normal
When it hangs, press CTRL+ALT+DEL
Go to the "Processes" tab
Find the title: "Explorer"
and end it

Tell us what happensQuote from: Zylstra on June 20, 2007, 11:37:00 PM

It doesn't hang. The computer is responsive but it just can't seem to shut down.

As for ur recommendation. I've tried ending Explorer.exe manually but it doesn't seem to slove my problem. The taskbar and icons all disappear but my computer is still not shutting downIf you've got time, try ending a PROCESS in the task manager that is not a system process(if it says System under the User Name it is a system process) and then shut down your computer normally if it doesn't shut down then do it manually. Write down the name of the program that you ended and then turn your comp back on and repeat this process until you are able to successfully shutdown. The last process that you ended would be the one that is preventing your computer from shutting down. Run a full HDD search for the program and if you can determine what program it is use Add/Remove in the Control Panel to uninstall it.

This hopefully will remove the process that is preventing your comp from shutting down. From The Mothership...

Solve : Getting rid of Symantec/Norton?

Answer»

Windows 98se.

I uninstalled Norton using its own uninstaller then searched for folders/files left behind and DELETED them. Then ran CCleaner to clear out files and clean the registry. Now when I reboot I get a message displayed, part of which states:

"Cannot find a device file that may be required to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists.

C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386

Press a key to continue.."

Pressing any key allows booting to continue as normal but how do I get rid of this annoying message please?

I cannot find any reference to the device file in the C:\Windows\System.ini file

ThanksI hoped you backup you register!
Because you 'll have to use the backup.
If you didn't let me know before you start the Norton removal tool
Dload and run Norton removal tool. (You do not need the CD that is only if you want to reinstall it)
Just "Forget" (step 3) to reinstall afterwards like they ask.
I do not know why a company makes it this hard to remove a program.
They say it is for security reasons.
But I think it is sow a person who can't get it off would eventually buy the license.
I find this a crude way.
That's why I say to everyone who reads this if you don't want any problems do not ever install Norton.
Let me know if it worked. (should be)

Jonas Thanks Jonas, I will try the removal tool shortly.

Meantime have found that by copying the file from ANOTHER system running Norton (Win ME) the error message no longer appears at bootup.

You're right on with the Symantec/Norton problems, I'd never ever consider it again even if it was free.

Cheers.Let me know how it turns out.
If you copied the files then your registry isn't adjusted sow that means that you never REALLY uninstalled it otherwise that copying and pasting wouldn't work.
is Norton still in you LIST of add or remove programs?
But actually don't bother just run the Norton removal tool and everything will be gone.

Jonas if you have a look at this Symantec web page there are guides and many removal tools for symantec products
http://searchg.symantec.com/search?q=remove+symantec+product&charset=utf-8&proxystylesheet=symc_en_US&client=symc_en_US&hitsceil=100&site=symc_en_US&output=xml_no_dtd&context=hho&x=2&y=12

as many as you have realised do not remove very cleanly, leaving troublesome bits behindIf you run the issue part of Ccleaner (after you ran Norton removal tool)
everything should be gone.
sorry forgot to say that. (should have)

Jonas

Norton did not appear in Add/Remove Programs after I ran the uninstaller. Seems likely that the 'missing' file was being called by a registry entry which I couldn't find.

After running the Norton removal tool all seems to have come right, the file has been deleted and the rogue message does not now appear. Using the Issues option in CCleaner didn't list any entry showing Norton or Symantec although there were about 20 other entries to be deleted.

Thanks for all your help..a more direct but tricky thing to do is remove all reference to norton and symantec in the registry, open regedit, then click on edit/ then find /enter (symantec) and delete each reference as it comes up, do the same with (norton) , many software removals leave little bits behind in a registry which can cause the registry to become oversize eventually, ccleaner should be able to remove uninstalled items and no longer required entries which will only be of benefit to the computer running better when they are removed. back up your registry first by putting the cursor on the My Computer/ then click file export/ rename for your knowledge then save it to a location you can remember. If you ran the removal tool and ran the issue part of Ccleaner aftwerds than all the entrys of Norton and Symatc should be gone.

Jonas You might expect that to happen Jonas but there are always a good few still there, as well as a hidden masked set that will pop up if you did try and restart your expired product.
If you reinstall symantec antivirus or firewall when the license time has ended, it will promptly tell you you have to purchase a new license. There is a chance if you format then reinstall but you have to make sure you change all your registration details name etc for that to work, or backup the registry prior to using the antivirus or firewall for almost the year, restore the backed up registry, then re install for another free year maybe.

Here...

Remember to follow each step.

Now that's getting me REAL confused. Part of the instruction reads:

"1) DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry..."

Yet the Erunt instructions indicate that Erunt is:

"The Emergency Recovery Utility NT

Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP"

My OS is Win 98se (see original post). Is Erunt good for 98se as well? I've been using Scanregw.

Thanks
scanregw will do fine at least the backup will be there for a recovery, there was a tool called ERU (Emergency Recovery Utility) which was included with the windows 95 disk but not the windows 98, and was a very simple recovery which worked , the ERUNT is for NT based systems such as NT, XP, WIN2000 and would be of no use for a windows 98 as that uses a fat file system.

but check this out this note says that it is on the windows98 disk file folder :- cd other\misc\eru
instructions for using ERU are shown when you start to run it.
* Insert a formatted floppy disk into your floppy disk drive.
* Insert the Windows 98 CD.
* When the dialog screen appears, click Browse this CD.
* Navigate your way to D:\other\misc\eru (where D is your CD-ROM drive)
* Double-click on ERU.exe. This will run the Emergency Recovery Utility that will help you create an emergency boot disk.

a more comprehensive guide can be found here :- http://goinside.com/98/8/msfteru.html

Hedonist,

If you are using scanreg you will be fine. When i submitted the procedure i didn't include the procedures for Win98.

Here are the complete instructions for backing up the registry for Win98....so you were on the right track.

The original instructions will be updated to include Win95/98 users and sorry for any confusion.

patio. Thanks very much for the clarification and education. My learning curve just got steeper. LOL

Solve : Cd- Drive failure..??

I have a Gateway 702 GE

250 GB SATA HDD
1024 MB DDR

Digital Media Reader (8-in-1)
2 FIREWIRE (IEEE 1394 ports) 7 USB ports

After getting adware and a virus my system seemed to slow down. I tried alot of stuff to remove them and with help from a friend I did. My system was messed ever since, small errors here and there so I decided to reformat the whole thing. When I tried the restore disk would not boot up. Cd/DVD is first in boot but it gets to the screen just before windows xp loads and SITS and a black screen with nothing until I eject the cd, then Windows will load. The cd was and is in perfect quality I don't even think I had to use it when I BOUGHT the computer, but i figured maybe it was just a bad cd, so I ordered a new one and the exact same thing happened. Games would install halfway then I would get an error message. I could play music cds THO. So I decided to try to reformat it using a windows Xp Pro cd, it reformatted and windows xp loads minus some drivers that are on the restore disks. I try again with the new restore disk and the same thing happens. I stole my brothers burner put it in my drive, same thing. I took his cd drive and put it in mine, same thing. This restore cd just wont boot. If anyone could help me in any way possible that would be amazing and most appreciated , Thanks in advance!!

- Frustrated! If it happened with more than one unit it could be the cable...try a new 80 conductor IDE cable.

Solve : Windows Usermode Driver Framework???

Answer»

Once again, another question I have:

What in the world is it? Whenever I start up my COMPUTER, all goes fine until I get this popup saying new hardware found and then it says "WIndows Usermode DRIVER Framework". What can I do to resolve this? I don't have any hardware/software to go with it, I've searched my computer with that popup to see if I have anything that can go with it and nothing is there. I downloaded the update from a windows update (I THINK it was an extra file that was optional) a long TIME ago. I just want to stop the popup and possibly delete any of those files I don't need. If you need anymore INFO just ask. Thanks

Solve : lost restore points?

Answer»

I'm running windows XP and somehow (my mistake) lost all my restore points. Is there any way to get them back? I have a problem that was fixed by going back a week to a restore point. Now all are gone & my problem is back. Alot of the time, when your hard drive is running out of disk space, System Restore will not only stop monitoring to CREATE restore points, but delete them to save disk space.

You can also check log files to see what event errors occurred.
Try this:

1. GO to Start > Control Panel > Computer Management > Event Viewer > System.
2. Click on the Source tab to sort by its name.
3. Go to View > Filter and next to Event source, select srservice, and press Ok.

Were you able to find System Restore in here ok? If so, what errors do the event logs in the description report?

Gizmo73

way2goofy ....... If you somehow turned off your system restore , than unfortunately theres no hope. When you tried to USE system restore, was it turned off ?

Solve : IE and Firefox slow startup among other things....please help?

Answer»

Well my problem is that whenever I try to open up firefox or IE it takes about 20 seconds or so to load a page, but when it actually loads the first page then it runs fine but after awhile it will run slow again. Another THING is whenever I try to connect to a game client that involves connect to the server to INSTALL a patch of some sort it wont let me connect (happened with three games).

I think that I statrted the problem because i got MAD at a game one night and umm...how should i say this...hit my knee underneath my desk really hard, which somehow managed to freeze my computer, so I restarted it and I began getting this C++ Runtime Error whenever I tried to access any program and the only way I knew how to fix it was System Restore.

So ya that would work for about a half a day then it would give me the same Runtime Error, so I shut off the error reporting in the My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Error Reporting.

And EVER since then my computer SEEMS to get worse each day.

Should I just reinstall windows or is that a BAD idea?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

h4lt
You might want to open up your computer and, using proper ESD precautions, check to make sure that everything is properly seated. If you knocked it hard enough to cause something to freeze, you might've made something come loose.Quote from: h4lt on June 18, 2007, 01:58:39 PM

And ever since then my computer seems to get worse each day.
So, it's not just IE and Firefox. Is that right? I think that jolt to your computer might have caused some hard drive damage. Run CHKDSK. What were the results? Any report of bad sectors in your hard drive?

When i try to turn it back on, it will only start for a SECOND. If i unplug it for 5 minutes and then try to start it, it starts. Somehow I tried switching the voltage to 230v then back to 115 when i start it and it works SOMETIMES. Can someone tell me whats wrong?

Have you made any recent hardware changes...such as the installation of a new video card?the cpu is only at 44°C on a stock fan. everything runs fine its just that it shuts off randomlyIt still runs but it shuts off randomly sometimes and wont turn on unless I leave it off for a few mins. Anyone know whats wrong? Would buying a new power help?

It could be a number of things. Replacing the power supply is a start.
Control Panl/System/Advanced/ Startup and Recovery...uncheck " auto restart on errors" which is on by default.
Re-boot. You will now instead get the wonderful BSOD instead of a restart.
Write down the complete error message and post it here...it will narrow down the possibilities of what the issue is.it doesnt restart, it only shuts off. will it still work? That thing you mentioned, moving the voltage switch to 230v and then back to 115, that sure makes the power supply a big suspect. You can do all the software TRICKS and tweaks you like, if the hardware has a fault, it won't fix that.
I am very sure that it is a hardwares fault because i recently reformatted and rebuilt the system. Everything is set to default, no overclocking etc etc..I am just trying to find out which hardware is the problem. Also When I rebooted it does not show the BSODQuote from: J.HA on June 10, 2007, 01:04:43 PM
I am very sure that it is a hardwares fault because i recently reformatted and rebuilt the system.

Maybe that's a clue. When you say rebuilt the system, do you mean you changed or moved stuff like RAM modules, display CARDS, CPU etc? Maybe you should check these things over for being seated correctly etc, and give the whole inside of the case a good inspection.

In your BIOS, are the RAM and CPU voltages correct for your CPU? Undervolting the CPU, if taken too far, can give symptoms like that, but that's not really what I would suspect

You've reset the CMOS and set the BIOS to fail safe defaults (press delete key at boot time)?
No i just took everything out, and put them back in the same order(i was checking to see if i plugged my components right). Everything seem to be connected correctly.

It also shuts off when im in the CMOS setup sometimes. So basically it shuts off randomly at any time, when i sleep, playing games, minimizing a game, etc etc(shuts off most often when i play games like 70% chance)

We ran Avast, AVG, MicroTrend it found no viruses.
Then we tried to run defender and it would not do it, ccCommons froze it up as well.

Solve : big problem with computer?

Today i was messing around with my pc, and downloaded some files and all of the sudden, my pc started going crazy and restarting over and over again.

I tried to scan it with my avg to see if i got a virus and it stopped working. When i tried to do the same with my anti spyware, it did the same and stopped working.

I deleted the files i downloaded and the problem wouldn't go away. I tried to do a system recovery and thats when my pc got messed up. During the system recovery, they noticed i missed a few files, so it restarted my pc and got a black screen saying i was missing a file or the file was corrupt.

It said:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

The problem is that i don't have any back up files, or the windows xp file, or anything that could help me out.
It won't even LET me go in safe mode. All i can do is go to BOOT menu, system recovery, and setup.

I am currently on another pc so can someone help me out?Didn't you get a recovery disk when the PC was bought?
Have you tried to copy the hal.dll file from another computer and put it in your C:\Windows\System32 folder?Try what MICHAEL suggested. If not, you'll need the CD that Contrex suggested.
When you find it do a restore from it.

This will require a WinXP CD that matches your installed VERSION...If you don't mind me asking...what exactly did you download?I think i had a similar problem once, that there was some file missing and it could not start, so when the pc was booting, i clicked on i think it was f10 or something, to xp or pc recovery, or something like that, so the pc pretty much reinstalled xp so it was like when i bought it, all music and videos were STILL there but alot of programs were gone, but i though it was worth it.
Thats how i would do it...

Solve : Need help driving me crazy!?

All of a sudden my windows XP will not SHUT down it's like it's frozen have to turn it off manually. Also how do you get rid of the box that pops up w/MSN core files it's not in Add/remove. Thanks alotWhat antivirus protection are you using?

Can you take a screen-shot of the MSN Core File dialog box and upload it to www.imageshack.us ?

The virus PROGRAM is Embarq just got DSL. I tried a system restore to see if that would help then saw Norton Anti virus 2005 on there so TOOK that out. It's weird will be ok then all of a sudden freezes up & won't shut off.
The other suggestion w/MSN, I have no idea how to take a screen shot, you have to realize you are talking to an idiot when it comes to complex COMPUTER issues. Thanks for trying to help me.Taking a screenshot is simple. When viewing the content you want in the shot press the PRINT SCREEN button next to the F12 key. Then go into any image editing program, i.e. paint, and press CTRL-V or select paste from the edit menu. Finally, save the image. You have now successfully taken a screenshot and are ready to upload it.

Solve : Where's my computer going??

Answer»

Every time I turn my pc on / start it up, a ZONEALARM pop-up tells me 'something' wants internet access to a certain IP address and subsquently shows 'traffic signals' being generated,..-As though some program or software is trying to auto-check for updates or something.[I have turned off every auto-update I could find including Windows XP, and ZoneAlarm's itself]
-A check of windows task MANAGER to see what programs/processes are running only shows that "taskmgr.exe" is running.

-Anyone know of a program or software I could obtain that would tell my what's specifically trying/asking to CONNECT on the internet and where it's going?

I'm using an HP Laptop about 3yrs old, and using:
-WindowsXP, fully updated version
-ZoneAlarm firewall, fully updated
-All the other hardware/software on PC has it's "automatic updates" features turned OFF (I think)

thx in advance for any help,Zone Alarm should tell you what program is accessing the internet. What does the ZA popup say or what appears in the ZA log?

I am kinda computer illiterate. I forgot to shut down the computer before I pulled out the power line. Now I can 't reboot the computer. Please, any tips to fix the computer would be very much appreciated. When you start your computer, do you see anything at all?
If not, try the following:

On the back of your computer, there should (in some cases) be a little black switch near the place where the power cable goes in.
Flip it back one way, then the other. Now try starting your computer

If there is no switch, try unplugging the computers power.

If these do not help, it brings the conclusion that the power bar you are using has a power surge protector. Switch the unit off, and then back on, and PRESS any "Reset" button it may have. Thanks for the quick reply, ZYLSTRA. Will try and will let know. one thing i need to ask to be sure. What's the power bar you are MENTIONING here?Quote from: jltrinh on June 19, 2007, 12:30:29 AM

A power bar

(Image source: http://www.ted-kyte.com )Thank you all but somehow it didn't work. Could it be something else? the computer is just dad no signal, not even the light on the computer.

My friend gave me her old Windows98 but she didn't remember her password to log on. How do I set up a new password/username? Thanks again. At the Windows 98 Login Screen, press ESC (escape)
(or click Cancel)
In many cases, this will bypass the login screen.

This will only work with some computers. It depends on the setup you're the man Zylstra. One more question. how come the Windows 98 don't RECOGNIZE the drive. I put the disk in but it didn't pick it up.Quote from: jltrinh on June 19, 2007, 11:39:06 PM

Windows likes regular maintenence. It's still gonna bite you once in awhile but this will narrow down the instances.

Solve : Laptop freezes during device installation?

Answer»

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here.
If you're interested there is a good guide to cooling down your notebook PC available here in addition to The Saviour's post. You're welcome.thanks calum, i'll look into that

Edit: The guide looks pretty useful, i'll try cleaning my laptop out in a few days once i get the canned air.OK, let us know how it goes.I didn't have to buy anything....i just blew some dust out of the heat sinks and fans and it doesn't overheat anymore. Now, it just freezes when it's installing the drivers and applications after the recovery.

This might be why:
"Due to the large number of virus and spyware threats on the internet, it is recommended that you disconnect all internet connections before reinstalling Windows®. After the Windows installation, antivirus and firewall software can be installed and then the internet connection can be re-enabled to update the antivirus definitions and perform Windows Updates. "

http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/Medialess/MLXPH1/MLXPH1su7.shtml

I'll try the system restore again and disconnect my internet because often, it freezes while installing norton antivirus...(but would my internet still be connected if i'm doing a system restore?) I don't think so but i'll try that anyway...any other solutions may helpIf you're still using the recovery program within the Gateway laptop...and it freezes when installing drivers, applications, etc., before trying to click anything or move your mouse, let it FINISH installing the drivers for your hardware.

If it continues to hang...then there may be a problem with the recovery program itself. Using the manufaturer's recovery CDs are more practical...there's no telling what's wrong with the recovery program already installed on the drive.

Also...depending on how old the laptop is...flashing the BIOS may be a good idea...but only if needed...and only as a LAST RESORT.i tried the restore without moving the mouse or pressing any keys but it still freezes, and i don't know how to get the recovery disks

what's "flashing the BIOS?"You can get your recovery CDs from the manufacturer's website...in this case: Gateway

If you're not familiar with what flashing the BIOS is...I'd forget about it at this particular moment...remember...I said it's a last resort.

Purchase MANFACTURER's recovery CDs and start from there. Once you receive your recovery CDs...FOLLOW the manufacturer's instructions for recovery.I must've tried system restore ALMOST 100 times this past week or two(because i'm stubborn/stupid).

Anyways, it keep freezing while installing norton, so i pressed ESC when it was doing that and some messages popped up and i finished the restore, i just need to download an antivirus now....

Thanks a lot guys, guess i don't need to come here anymore....for now.....hopefully.Here's a well rounded Protection Package for you after banging heads with______n's

Avast or

Then each one of these:

AdAware

Spybot

Solve : XP and compacting messages in OE?

Answer»

get the message that I can compact the stuff(messages), but I do not want that message to show up again......any idea how to get rid of it, can't find any options...and please don't tell me it so usefull...I DO NOT WANT IT...

XP Pro, IE60, Sygate, AVG (both), Spybot.....3200Mhz, AMD Athlon 64, 1024 RAMIn most cases, it IS useful. It does NOT delete your messages.

In Windows XP, there is no way to disable it.
(At least, I know there isnt on my computer)

OK, thanks, BEDANKT, was AFRAID of that...Uncle Billy is too nosy sometimes...prettige dag nog... If you are avoiding compacting because you have a lot of emails (and you think its going to take a long time):
I have over 7000 email messages. It only takes me about a minute to compact them.

(Not to mention, I have another inbox in outlook that holds around 2000 emails)

Compacting is not deleting YOU say...why do I get this picture than?? Recyclebin doesn't sound like compacting
See BAK?
See BAK Run?
See BAK and actual extension differences?

.bak files are used for backing up your compacted messages before they are compacted, in case something goes wrong.

See, Uncle Bill is looking out for you, me, and the precious data we receive on the internet lol..yes...somebody TOLD me to adjust the "Compact Check Count" in the registry to 0, but I can't find it at the place that was mentioned although I have all the right updates and PATCHES for my XP Pro
******************************************************
This is what it said and the guy asking said it worked

Look for this key in the Registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
Double click the Compact Check Count
Select the Base option for Decimal and change the value to 0
This should change both the HEXADECIMAL and decimal values to zero.
Close the Registry.
********************************************************
But I can't find that item in my registry
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0"

The problem is that XP has OE version 6.0

Try searching for 6.0 instead of 5

Remember to backup your registry first

Solve : wallpaper but all else blank?

Answer»

on a dell desktop running win xp, the screen only shows wallpaper and nothing else. How do I get the icons and toolbars back? This is my daughter's computer, so I don't know what she did or didn't do to bring it on. It seems like there must be an easy solution. Like maybe the screen is just enlarged so much I can't see the stuff? The wallpaper looks normal and the mouse pointer works, but when the computer is restarting, all the writing is enlarged and running off screen. I've tried restarting in safe mode, but all I get is a black screen with "safe mode" written in all the corners. right click on your blank desktop, and select Properties.
that will load the display properties window.
then goto Display tab, and you will possibly see that you ahve 2 monitors enabled.
try to disable the second monitor, or set your correct monitor as primary.
or before you try any of that, see if on the back of your computer you have another spot to plug in the monitor, and try the other plug.

hope that helps!

When you say writing, what do you mean? I'm enclined to think you have something preventing explorer.exe from running which is what controls the task bar and icons. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, then click the PROCCESS tab, and look for 'explorer.exe'. If that's not there that is why nothing is showing up. Why it's not starting up is another story.OK. now I've discovered that I don't have 'explorer.exe' showing up. How do I fix it? I just found a post that provided a link with instructions for a repair install. I will try this and see. Let you know. Thanks. Meantime, any other suggestions are welcome.Quote from: skybluealice on June 18, 2007, 01:02:56 PM

OK. now I've discovered that I don't have 'explorer.exe' showing up. How do I fix it?

Press ctrl+alt+delete and go to programs, on the left of processes, now click on new process down in the right corner and type in explorer, then the icons and the start button should appear...Thanks FilluX, I tried what you said and it worked, but then the computer TOTALLY crashed. There's definitely something more serious going on than I want to WASTE my time with. I'm sure under normal circumstances, your fix is the perfect solution, but I'm gonna go buy a Mac for my daughter (no offense to all you windows lovers). I have a G5 myself and I absolutely LOVE it. A Mac?! That's the worst solution I've ever SEEN! UNLESS, of course, you want to give me the faulty PC. Heh.

I kid, of course.

If you haven't completely given up on the computer, then you might want to try posting a HijackThis log. Explorer might've been disabled by some sort of infection (what protection do you have?).Hey Matt- I'll be happy to send you the faulty PC (C.O.D. of course). I personally think the Mac is the best solution ever. No sickness at all (viruses, bugs, worms, adware, spyware, blah, blah, blah). I'm really not kidding. If you want it, sans monitor, it's yours. I just don't have the time or patience for windows anymore. But I wish all the power to those who do Mac is prone to viruses just like Windows, but it is true that the risk is a lot lower. I'm against Macs for myself (just not my preference), but I hope your daughter will be happy with it. If you're really willing to send out the PC, I'm willing to pay C.O.D. As long as it's not an ungodly amount, of course. Ha.Sure. I'll send it. How and where?
I've sent you a PM.

Solve : Problems with Screen resolution in XP?

Answer»

I just recently installed a new hard drive in my Dell computer. I reinstalled Windows XP. The icons on the screen are large. It won't let me install certain programs because of the resolution. I TRIED to troubleshoot and change the screen resolution but the SLIDER won't BUDGE. Do I need to unistall things in my device manager? Help! What video card do you have?
It sounds like you need to install the drivers.I am learning as I go, I have no idea what kind of video card I have. Is that SOMETHING I can access in my control panel? It would be easier for you to tell US the model of your Dell, for example a Dell Dimension 5200 or something.
If you don't know it (it should say somewhere) then go to Start --> Run --> type dxdiag and press enter.
Then click Save All Information and attach the report generated to your next post.you don't have any video drivers installed. Look for a cd that is labeled drivers and run the cd. If you don't have a drivers cd then we need to know the model number to tell you where to get the right drivers.I have a Dell Dimension 3000, nothing exceptional.Do you have a drivers CD?
Dell's support site gave me 4 different video drivers for your model.Bear in mind I am learning, what is a drivers cd?It will have come with your PC.
Just a normal CD, it will probably be labelled something like "Dell Dimension 3000 Drivers" or "Computer Drivers".Yes, I have that CDPop that CD in and run the install, the thing you want is video drivers.
It should be fairly straightforward to install. Thanks I will give it a try.

Your assumption is incorrect. If you remove any line shown, it will fail to boot at all.

What you have cut and PASTED only shows 1 boot option. What are the 2 options you refer to in your first post? That is weird, because the default one just says "Windows" when it boots up and i have to manually choose the 64bit. If i don't and it choose the "Windows" default then it just hangs and reboots itself.there is only one option... but:

Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

the "Default" option should not have any parameters specified. It is used to refer to an item in the [Operating Systems] section. What I believe MAY be happening is that the boot loader is adding two items because you have two distinct entries here, the default is being set to "default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS /usepmtimer", but since the boot loader cannot find an entry for that in the Operating Systems section, it creates a new "ghost" entry for it, labelled, as you've seen, "windows". This also explains the hang you experience, while the boot loader has difficulties finding the "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS /usepmtimer" partition.

the above modification should remove this "phantom" option.

perfect, I will try that and report back.Hey guys,
thanks so much. this worked and we are all set.excellent! glad to be of help!

Solve : Freezing Up @ Loading Personal Settings?

Answer» HI All-
I am not really sure why but my 4 year old PC is now stopping the boot up process when we get to "loading personal SETTINGS". I've tried running in safe mode and no luck there either. I purchased a recovery disc but unfortunately it makes no sense to me....since it had no instructions with it (EBAY). Anyone have any suggestions? I can follow your basic instructions but if we get to the point I need to know all these technical computer commands, I need it spelled out for me as to how to proceed. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

I assume this all happened without you making any modifications or changes to the computer or installing any new software. If you can provide a list of installed software, PARTICULARLY anti-virus and/or anti-spyware, that would be a starting point before resorting to this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
ok-I got it to boot past the point of "loading personal settings" but now no icons are coming up on the screen? I am not sure what prograns are on there except itunes, taxcut, wordpad.......probably others but i just don't know.

thanks. The point is, there is something that is causing it to run more slowly than normal. Maybe it's time for some "house cleaning".
Download, install and run this:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Run the main CLEANER (check the 1st 3 IE boxes) and then run the registry cleaner more than once, until it shows nothing left to clean.

BucxSee if you can reinstall IE or go back to the IE you get when you reformat XP, once done that you can UPDATE.Tranc 3r

I really appreciate your help. But my limited experience has me confused.

Are you saying , reformat XP and reinstall IE ??

BucxNot really!

You know how there are different versions and updates for Internet Explorer, each update CHANGES a few things in the previous version. All I'm saying is that you should try to uninstall the latest Internet Explorer (IE 7) and update it back. That way you are reinstalling it. Sort of like this:

1. Uninstall IE 7, then you will have IE 6
2. Now that you have IE 6, you will be notified by Microsoft Update to update your version of IE and run and install that update

Just follow these steps from Microsoft.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177Thanks trans3r

I understand and I will try your suggestion.

Question,,, when I uninstall IE7, will I automaticly have IE6 as a browser
installed?? If not , how do I get it??

Info that may matter.... I had IE7 installed previously and upgraded to IE8.
I started having some problems with slow paging and having
links not accessing. so I went to MS SIGHT and changed back
to IE7.

This problem with the cursor and hour glass blinking(like
its blocking a pop up) started. It blinks 12 to 15 times
after the new page appears, but no action like scrolling
or opening will work until it stops.
I can wait on it but its a pain in the neck.

Bucx

1. Uninstall IE 7, then you will have IE 6

Think of it as a downgrade to a lower level version so: From IE7 to IE6.

and go to the link please, it tells you that.

Also, now are you using IE8? That should have fixed it as well...

I say try another Browser like Chrome (<-- I use this) or Mozilla Firefox. If you really really REALLY want to use IE, I'll post other solutions if I can think of any.

Solve : Computer Having Trouble Starting?

Answer»

I turned on my computer--as per usual. When I logged on, the normal welcome screen CAME up--I'm working on Windows XP, and my computer itself is an HP, by the way--and then my desktop showed. I was about to get on my desktop, but then another welcome screen had popped up, and on this welcome screen, I was prompted to either shut down the computer, or LOG in as HP_User. Normally, it doesn't ask me to do this.

So I restarted the computer, and again, it prompted me to log in as HP_User. So I clicked on the button, and it said it was accessing my info...and then took me right back to the Welcome/Log in screen. This time, I tried to turn my computer off completely. Again, I turned it on, and I was again re-directed to the Welcome/HP_User screen.

When my desktop had SHOWN up however, I ATTEMPTED to to a Control-Alt-Delete deal, but it wouldn't open up, and then immediately went to the welcome screen again. So currently, I'm stuck on that same welcome screen, and I can't get into my desktop. Anyone have any ideas of what might be going on?Same thing with SAFE mode?

When was the last time you blew the dust out of the computer with a can of compressed air?

I NEVER had to install any drivers on the lap top for it to work, so I don't KNOW if that would be the reason it doesn't work on the desktop computer. It is connected through a USB 2 port. I have gone to device manager and it does not recognize the hard drive. Would anyone have a SUGGESTION as to what I should try and do to get my computer to recognize my hard drive? Hi all replaced my hard drive today but TRIED ( by MISTAKE to install xp home sp2) but its my sons disc and i dont have the product key but I have the Right disc and key but no cant delete the part loaded data from the wrong disc can you help please
thanks dave p Boot to the XP CD...
Delete the partition and then continue with setup...

If your machine has a product key it doesn't matter what CD you use as LONG as the versions match. Also, if you want to recover the original windows XP key that originally came with your son's disk, try this....

I have only tried it on a XP Professional CD, but it should work for the Home and OEM versions of Windows XP from restore disks.

To Find the Windows XP Product Key from the Windows XP CD:

1) Insert Windows XP cd into a working computer.
2) Exit the Autorun introduction.
3) Open “My Computer”
4) Right Click on the Windows XP cd-rom drive and select explore.
5) Open the USWXP32P_ZX folder. (It may be as a hidden folder. If you cannot locate the folder, you may also SEARCH for unattend.txt and mark “Search Hidden Files”.)
6) Open the sysprep folder.
7) Open unattend.txt

Your CD’s product key is contained within the unattend.txt file somewhere towards the BOTTOM, if I remember correctly.

Solve : Blue Screen [not BSoD]?

Answer»

Hi, I've got quite the problem here. I left my computer alone for AWHILE, and it went into sleep mode. When I started it up again, I had a blue screen with horizontal white lines [kind of like tire tracks] that shake a little bit. I tried turning off the monitor, but that didn't help. So, I restarted the computer, and that didn't do anything, either. As you can see, my computer still RUNS just FINE. I'm typing this with the blue screen. I have no lag or anything.

I can't think of anything else to do. Please help?First, try another monitor.

Then some specs on your computer would be helpful. (Laptop or desktop? Video card? OS?)Another monitor?

But, it's a desktop [COMPAQ], I don't know about the video card, and it's an XP.Ya another monitor. Or try replugging in the monitor cable. If all else fails get a new graphics cardBefore buying a new graphics card, take it out and examine it for any defects (i.e. blown/bulging capacitors)

Then see if you can borrow a known good working graphics card. Thanks for the help, guys. My SISTER said she wiggled the wires and it was fixed.Nice. Good Job.

Solve : My Computer Will Not Stand By?

Answer»

I searched around the forums here and was surprised not to find any issues related to this. I've searched around in other areas and I've seen that this problem is actually sort of common.

Anyways, let me get down to the point. When I try to put my computer in Stand By, it won't work. It instead, shows the screen where it says "Preparing to Stand By" and then shuts down, only for a MOMENT. IMMEDIATELY thereafter, it starts right back up and shows the login screen.

From the PLACES I've searched, the most common reason for this seems to be a background process that is running or some sort of hardware device that prevents the computer from going into standby. I think it might be the latter, being the hardware device preventing it from going into Stand By. I'm not certain when the problem started but I think it may be my Logitech mouse preventing me from going into Stand By. I'm not certain, though, so I'm open to suggestions.

If it is that my mouse is interfering, could any of you possibly point me in the direction of when I can download the "HID Non-User Input Data Filter"? This is supposedly the fix that has helped MANY people out with the problem but I can't find it anywhere. I looked under the Optional Updates in my windows updates and it doesn't show up to me. I have also searched the internet to see if anyone has a download of it that does NOT come from Windows Updates. Nothing came up. Help with this would be appreciated.

If you know of any other reason that I may not be able to Stand By, let me know. I'll gladly check or scan anything to try to get this problem fixed.

Additional Info:
E Machine T6412
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor
2 GB of RAM
Logitech MX Revolution Mouse
Avira AntiVir Personal - Free AntiVirus
NVIDIA GForce 7600 GS

If you need any other information, let me know.
Thank you for your help ahead of time.I have also seen this in systems where the hard drives are packed with data and there is inadequate space to write the system state to the hard drive. Do you have adequate free hard disk space?Interesting, I had the same problem on older computers (where they would get stuck on the 'Standing by, please wait' screen for ever).

Is the problem still occurring when the system is freshly booted? What about booting into admin account?

Also, if you think it's your mouse then the most obvious thing to me would be to try a different (USB / PS2) mouse. It's pretty important if we determine whether it's a hardware issue or the software one (my gut is telling me it's the latter, but we'll have to see )I have 108 GB of free space on my Hard Drive so I'm pretty sure that restricted disk space isn't the issue. DLoad and install Process Explorer...Free.
I believe it can be launched right before standby and still report...If it's desktop....
Rule #1 - Don't use Windows POWER saving features
Rule #2 - See rule #1I agree with Broni, power saving, other than having the display being shutoff just doesn't work right on a desktop unit.Thank you for all of your help. I ended up unplugging my wireless mouse for a connected mouse and it still didn't work. However, when I used the wired mouse and tried to standby, it informed me that I couldn't standby because my Zune was preventing it. I unplugged my Zune and Standby worked fine. All I've got to do is unplug my Zune whenever I'm going to standby now.

Thanks again.

[Sorry for the late reply. I was on vacation and had no access to the computer that I needed help with.]No problem...
Glad to hear you are fixed up and stop by anytime...

Solve : Nid help pls.?

Answer»

My computer restarts after the windows xp loading screen.

It shows a blue screen error,
I cant read it because it is so fast(split second)
please help. What did you do before the problem?

Any hardware changes/installs/downloads/ect?1. STOP the automatic restart to get information from the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Tap the F8 function key once or twice a second as you reboot the machine. (If laptop, you may need to use the F-lock key to access the function keys.) The Windows Advanced Options menu should appear. Use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter. Hopefully the machine will stop on the BSOD.

2. BSOD. Record and post the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending SOFTWARE module it MIGHT NAME. A google search on these text strings or substrings SOMETIMES provides problem resolution.

3. What service pack level of Windows XP Home are you operating at, if known? None, SP1, SP2, SP3?
