Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion...remove the XP CD and re-boot.

Solve : System Restore/Reformat Results in Disk & Stop Errors?

Answer»

So, I consider myself to be pretty decent with fixing computers; that is, I can research my little *censored* off and find out whatever I NEED to fix the problem, often times trying multiple solutions off of forums just like this one.

However, I'm stumped.

My ex boyfriend installed Windows XP on my computer using a slave drive after a power outage corrupted some system files. A few weeks later, my computer started giving me stop error messages (more recently F4, but prior to that they were KERNEL_INPAGE_DATA type errors). Finally, everything just clonked out and it defaulted to my Gateway's restore -- which failed miserably. I had to use my XP disk to get into command prompt and reformat.

Now, if my computer lags or I hit a MAJOR CPU spike of some sort, I get a stop error message followed by a "Disk error, Press a key to Restart" screen.

Is this a failed hard drive? Or is this as a RESULT of Windows XP being installed via a slave drive like error F4 hints at? Also, when I boot my computer I get the "Choose which OS you'd like to boot," type message -- prompting me to choose between Windows XP Home Edition and An Unrecognized Operating System located on Drive C:. It's probably worth mentioning that I had Ubuntu installed on another partition prior to my last reformat...

I haven't opened up the tower to see if maybe there's a secondary drive hooked up (I'm assuming there is some sort of restore drive... <_<) that could be causing this... is that even a possibility?

Thanks for any and all responses in advance. I'd really like to get back to playing games on this thing.

I don't think, I understand the procedure.

The computer wouldn't boot, so he hooked up a slave drive with Windows XP on it and got all of my files off of the OLD drive... then formatted my old drive and re-installed Windows XP on it and copied my documents and such to it.Quote

While the hard drive still as a slave?
If so, it won't work, because Windows installation is tied up to hardware configuration, so you can't simply move that hard drive to another computer, and expect Windows to work.

Hello

I have a few HTML files and a couple of images on a CD and I would LIKE to open the index.html file automatically on all Windows COMPUTERS as soon as the CD is inserted into the CD-ROM.

I am using this script in an .inf file at the moment, but index.html will not open:

What happens is that my CD-ROM DRIVE opens and I have to manually choose the index.html file. I have TRIED it on two XP Pro computers.

Solve : Windows XP product key?

Answer»

I hope this hasnt been answered before, I had a bit of a look through...

My boyfriends got me looking at his computer for him, he had it fixed a month ago after frying his power supply and has been getting a message to activate his windows since then - he hasnt done this, and when I went to go onto it today, its been locked out.

I cant find on his pc tower anywhere the microsoft sticker with the product key, and I cant find his disk anywhere, I had hoped that the coded from my laptop might work but it doesnt... Without being able to get into his system tool and find the product code in there (cos Im locked out of windows and can only get to the 'activate windows' screen), is there any other way I can find the product key without having to call microsoft and pay for it?

Thanks...Seeing that you can't get into windows, try out what this link says, supposedly you can retrieve the xp key from the ntuser.dat file .... so give that a shot first and let us know how it goes2x315x,

Had a look at the site you posted, but it says I harve to take out the hard drive and connect it to a working machine... only problem being I have absolutely no idea how to do that!! I can generally make a computer do what I want it to, and can fix basic stuff, but they pulling it apart bit is a little over my head - PLUS hed kill me if I somehow broke it!

Thanks so much for your reply though... (it was very helpful)Hey again - i managed to find two programs online that both searched for my product key and came up with the same key... only problem being that when i tried to activate it, it says its an invalid key - so back to the drawing board...what program were you trying?

Just wondering two things...

1. You did try contacting Microsoft and they did give you a solution but that wasn't free?

2. what kind of computer does your boyfriend use? I'd like to know the manufacturer and the model. You could connect the desktop's hard drive to your laptio (which is a working computer) but you'd need to buy an adapter or a hard drive external enclosure case that gives you the right ports to connect your laptop to the desktop hard drive.

I know that you wanted a free solution to your problem, but the solution that I know of off my head (which I am pretty sure should work isn't completely free)Hi,

I havent contacted Microsoft yet, no, because I dont really have any INFORMATION to give them.. I cant find his original windows CD or any from of proof of purchase, and I dont really wanna be buying a new key if i can get away with it.

He uses a Compaq Evo D500 - I pulled up a profile of the entire computer which is how I know that! Im really not comfortable playing with the hard drive and that, i really dont have the experience for stuff like that.

I used two programs, magicaljellybean and Belarc - both of which gave me the same product key which is apparently invalid. Was talking to somone on the chat just before who was really helpful - it seems as though the tech has reinstalled windows when he repaired the computer (this only started asking for activation when we picked it up from repair)

any input is greatly appreciated...Contact the Tech...he's responsible. Thanks Patio, thats my next idea, im thinking ill go in and see them tomorrow - if they have reinstalled windows, they didnt need to SURELY, not just to replace the power supply...

Solve : master hard drive dieing, can I copy it to slave drive??

Answer»

Hi, I have an issue, my main hard drive is about to die, and I need to try to copy it to my other drive so I can take it out and just use my other drive as my main drive and boot WINDOWS etc. from it.

Is there a way to do this? I already have stuff INSTALLED on my second drive which I don't want to lose so I don't want to have to format it in ORDER to INSTALL windows onto it.

If there any way at all of just copying everything from my dieing drive to my other drive so I can just take my main drive out and use the other as a main drive.

My main drive was a temporary replacement for my last hard drive that died, it is only 40GB IDE, and my secondary drive is a 250GB SATA (if that helps) I am also running windows XP pro SP3.

If you need any more info, I will do my best to tell you ANYTHING you need to know

Just provide the Make, Model, and Model Number of the computer, if it's a brand name (e.g. Dell, Gateway, HP); otherwise the Make, Model, and Model Number of the motherboard.

For brand name company, information should be on back of processor box on sticker or a metal plate.

For upgrade memory options, you can use the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool on the www.crucial.com website. Their information is reliable.thanks for the link

And do you have a budget? (how much are you willing to/able to spend on pc upgrades?)since i want to keep what i got my budget isnt that high but ill pretenbd skys the limit...
i watch movies.. download movies, songs... 9000+ itunes, 300 gig harddrive full, i terrabyte harddrive half ful,
download and tweak alot of softweare,
play a few games, neverwinternights, command and conquer,
ive had to replace the power supply because it never gets turned off,,
i just upgraded it half an hour ago to its maximum 2 gig limit,
works decent,

just wondering... lookin at the specs provided how does it stand against most normal new computers...oh and constant web surfing.. normal dsl 200 gig a month connection...
computer never gets turned offI think clearing up some Hard drive space would help speed a bit. I only have one 80GB HDD, so I'm really limited in space XD. Do you clear out the temporary files and cache regularly?go to www.canyourunit.com and use their tool to test your pc's specsagainst the minimum specs of games you are interested in that they have in their list.

Can't seem to link to that??Mulreay, the link works fine. I have tested it in Internet Explorer, Firefox and chrome. However,

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest is the other link that goes to the same page as the canyourunit so give that a go.

Well then call them.

I remember patio saying a few days ago that Microsoft are not the monsters they're made out to be!that be true but you get like india people an its like repeat that.......Call them.......I dont want to.... one thing may lead to another an its like ughhh.. ... Also I have to do it at certain times which is another reason. You post here looking for advice, and we gave it to you.
Instead of this dragging on for another 2 weeks, call them now.

This is the same with all your other topics.
"I don't want to do that" "It's too much to do"
"I've got too much going on"
"Is there something else I can do?"
Seriously Squall, we are getting sick and tired of this.I'll see since you didnt answer my QUESTION. Just wanted to make it easier...... Answer you question? How do you use a modem if it's not configured? Hmmm?

Question: You're on the internet right now.....so I don't see the problem....differnt machine why else would I have to ASK. Quote from: squall_01 on July 23, 2009, 05:51:50 AM

Do you see something wrong with this sentence? A small bit hypocritical...

Solve : Simple sound recorder that works??

Answer»

I want to RECORD music from cassettes on my computer. I downloaded Audacity but it looks really confusing and I don't know where to start. I tried Microsoft Sound Recorder- I used a cable to connect the earphones port in the tape player with the microphone port in the computer. The sound did record but it sounds like POO. Tried lowering the volume of the tape player, no CHANGE. What was I doing wrong, and is there a free sound recorder that works and is easy to USE? I also want to record songs that are several minutes long. What I eventually plan to do is combine the songs with pictures and put them on YouTube.Personally, I like Audacity, and I find it simple when you get the hang of it. if you don't want to use Audacity, there is this:

http://www.screenvirtuoso.com/audio-recorder.html

Hope That Helps!Thanks- I'll check that out. The thing with Audacity, it offers a million choices when I just want to do one thing, and there seems to be no guide to it- how do you know what to do?Audacity tutorial...

http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Transferring_tapes_and_records_to_computer_or_CDYou plug in the cassette player to the mic jack, select record from mic jack as your option, and hit record. it should do the trick. karnac, nice link, I had the Audacity tutorial in my bookmarks, somehow they came out of my bookmarksThanks, guys! I think I'll GIVE Audacity a try now that I have the tutorial. Thomas- were your last instructions for using Audacity, or that other one you recommended? I downloaded that one, and then when I tried to unzip it, it told me I had to put in some kind of disk that I don't have. There's always something! I'll let you know how my next adventure turns out.I was just saying that is how I record cassettes in Audacity, but I am sure the tutorial is better

Solve : screen will not come on during boot up?

Answer»

IBM Thinkpad X21, was working fine, today on startup, I get momentary screens/info during normal startup, then just a black screen, have tried RESTARTING several times by 'crashing'/hitting start button, it's the same every time, and as I can't access my 'help section' I turned to this FORUM for assistance/help.
I wondered if a KEY on the F line might have been pushed by mistake that could have shut down the screen?I believe the computer boots correctly as it 'sounds' LIKE it has gone through a normal startup. Any ideas?
SqueakSorry all, figured out the problem, I have some kind of 'short' in the wiring between the laptop and the screen, by jiggling/opening/closing the screen it came on and is now working....I think it's time for a new laptop!!

Solve : Generic Host Process Error?

Sometimes in the middle of my work while I'm connected to the internet I get this error message.

Generic Host Process Win32Services has encountered a problem and needs to close

After I click the 'Don't Send' button , my internet is disconnected and then it does not reconnect, and the desktop and all the desktop icons appear like they do in safe mode but only for a second.

Solve : Internet Explorer??

Answer»

I started using Google Chrome & I really like it. I also have Firefox. My question is can I safely get rid of Internet Explorer, delete it completly? It's crap ANYWAY! How do I get rid of it, if I can?No, don't do that. Trying to remove it is not a good idea since it's rather tightly integrated with the Windows 0S.

Nobody is forcing you to USE IE. Just IGNORE it. But, if you want to make it appear to be uninstalled, go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, select Add/Remove Windows COMPONENTS, and select IE for removal. This does not actually remove IE program files but remove icons and shortcuts to it.

Solve : What kind of video card??

Answer»

Hello there, just wondering if someone could help me with this.

Had a bad storm and now my computer won't display won't WORK. It COMES on, I can hear it running but no video. I checked the monitor on another computer and it works. So thinking I need a video card. I have a GeForce 6100-M9 sort of like this one:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1559986&CatId=1189

What I need to know is do I get a GeForce video card? Opened up computer and the only slots available are the PCI Express slots, the others have things in them, like USBs and other stuff.

Can I put in a PCI Express video card on this motherboard even though it already has one onboard that does not work? And how do I know if I need a 128bit or a 256bit card if I can't see what I already had in there. Appreciate any help.

Help!
128 and 256 is the ram size I believe you are refering to. Its up to you, one is better both should work.

Putting in a new graphics card into the pci express should automaticaly over-ride the integrated graphics.

I'm sceptical if it will solve the problem but its worth a shot I suppose.Do I have to put a PCI Express card in the PCI Express slot or can I just use any PCI video card? The PCI express cards are EXPENSIVE to me.

I don't know if this will work either, but it's worth a shot like you said. If it does not work I think I will just buy another computer.

Thanks a lot for you reply "fat"Can you tell me if this one will do okay? Thanks!

http://cgi.ebay.com/NVIDIA-GeForce-8400GS-Video-Card-256MB-DVI-PCI-Express_W0QQitemZ350198783712QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item5189795ee0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1234%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

What do you want to do with it?

If you are only doing documents then any card will work, what kind of games do you play?Online games only and I take a lot of photos. And some document work also. Then it doesn't really matter. As long as you aren't manipulating huge photos and playing bleading edge games you can save a bit of money and go with the less expensive card. Thanks a lot Quantos, appreciate it much! It's never a problem, come back any TIME at all.Well it wasn't the video card, put it in and still now video. Everything else seems to be working. POWER supply works and it sounds like it's running but no video.

Does this mean the computer did fry? Time to buy another computer?

Anyone?

Solve : failed access from links and tabs on outlook?

Answer» OFTEN I receive email with links , tabs or buttons to open other info
usually form websights.

I had a virus that I successfully got rid of, and now, from time to time,
I get an email with a link that will not work when I click on it.

Everything else seems to be OK, and this problem did not occur B4.

I use Outlook EXPRESS (cant find what version) and , of course winXP.

SUGGESTION Please. My skills are limited.

bucxYou can always highlight the link, right click and hit copy. Then paste it in your address/location bar right click hit pasteThanks XPUser,

That is what I've been doing. But I ddn't ever have to do this B4
a few day ago. I'd just like to get it fixed so I won't have to move back
and forth to my browser, where I'm also fighting low speed problems.

BucxIf you are willing to switch to Mozilla Thunderbird, it is a free email client from mozilla, it
is a great email prog. There is an addon for T-Bird called Thunderbrowse

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/5373

that opens the webpage from T-Bird so you dont have to touch your browser for email links, and the it is based on the technology from Firefox, the Gecko layout engine. If you want to still use Outlook, we'll do some troubleshooting. Thanks XPU

I'll keep your info and may switch later, but but for now I'd like to stay with Outlook.

I don't know if this applies, but a while back I had a malware, FINALLY,used your sight suggestion and got rid of it OK. In the mean time while looking for any help I could get I downloaded Stopzilla antivirus. I've been having
different problems since. Today I got a message that my virtual memory was low and my browser wouldn't open for a while.

Could Stopzilla be the problem.

Minimum skills.

bucxCan you list all the security programs on your PC (AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, etcBetter yet list all the Extensions you are currently running in FireFox...Thanks much for your interest and reply.

I am currently not running foxfire.

The security items on my PC are:

Norton antivirus
Stopzilla antivirus ( do not run both at the same time)
CCleaner
Super antispyware
malwarebytes
Free registry fix

BucxFree Registry Fix is probably the issue...
Get rid of it and give up on all registry fix it up Apps from here out....Patio thanks a bunch

I did just that yesterday, by coincidence, after a friend told me he had been
advised to download spybot and dump all the rest. What do you think.

How about Norton? I have heard some bad tales about them.
My subscription is good thru December.

Bucx

I would switch to a Free alternative such as Avast or AVG...
Norton is a resource hog and you and your machine will be happier with it gone...
Norton Removal Tool

Run this tool after removing Norton from Add/Remove programs...
Then do a diskclean and defrag from Start/Programs/Accessories.

Solve : Blue Screen (Just need analyzation)?

Answer»

Well, you're back to square one, then:
You need to either call Sony, or get Windows CDQuote from: Iamanoob on August 03, 2009, 11:49:37 AM

Are you accusing me of trying to do something LIKE that?

Calm down. If you post a virus we will tell you. Were not saying it's your fault, it's just a fact. FOLLOW Broni's advice and you should be ok.1. Computer Specs. Please give us some definitive specs on the SONY laptop that's about seven or eight years old:
a. LOOK on outside of laptop; possibly sticker or PLATE on bottom or back:
o Make: SONY
o Model: ?
o Model_Nbr: ?
o Serial_Nbr: ?

b. Use "Start" -> right-click "My Computer" -> "Properties":
o OS and SP Level: e.g., Windows XP SP3
o Product_ID: e.g., 17505-OEM-0071634-06642 ?

o CPU Make: Intel or AMD ?
o Processor: ?
o Speed: ?
o RAM (MB or GB):

2. Recovery CD.
a. Is it the "original" CD that came with the laptop? For what operating system and service pack level?

b. CD Case Label: What information, if any, identifies it for the SONY laptop Model and Model Number you have?

c. CD Labels: What identifying label information is on the CD itself, including the inner ring.

3. Incompatible Recovery CD:
a. What symptoms or error messages make you believe the CD may be incompatible with your laptop?

b. Can you explore the Recovery CD from within Windows and view the directory/files on it?

c. Is that laptop set to boot from CD before the hard disk drive?

d. Is the CD badly scratched, BARELY scratched, or in mint condition?

e. Are you trying to access the CD from the "original" CD drive of the laptop, an internal CD drive, or an CD external drive?

4. Just Curious. What did virustotal.com report? And let that be the final word!!!
Quote from: Iamanoob on August 03, 2009, 11:49:37 AM
First of all, after Broni said there was a virus on it, I scanned it through virustotal.com..believe me I had no idea (I use Nod32 and it didn't pick it up.)
I didn't accuse you of anything...i simply asked a question.

Solve : Dell/xp pro/ram?

I have two computers, both DELLS, one is a HYPER-threader the other is a quad workstation.
I've upgraded the ram in both, (for the hyper threader from 1.25 gbs to 2.0 gbs.
On the workstation from 2.5 gbs to 3.0.
Both are now operations a BIT slower, is there a reason for that?
I KNOW they aren't at MAX, but does it reach a point where more ram is not necessary?

Solve : Cannot install windows xp after formating.?

Answer»

Hi, I was PLAYING the game AION ONLINE. My computer randomly froze yesterday and would not REBOOT windows. It would just circle from the startup SCREEN to the loading windows with the bars going across back to my startup screen. I currently am trying to reformat thinking that is the problem. I am able to reformat the computer but when it comes to 12% and a certain file it says I have an error it starts on the same file everytime. I have tried a windows XP HOME AND PROFESSIONAL CD. I have taken out each piece of ram 1 by 1 to TRY it and it still does not work. I am completely confused and do not KNOW where to go from here could my hard drive gone bad randomly? Please help thank you. what does the error say specifically?

is it just that your computer fails to read the file off the disk? I believe it's the HDD's problem.

If possible, try to swap HDDs and see if it copies files successfully and boots it.Most likely the CD is dirty/scratched or the Cd drive is dirty. If cleaning the CD doesn't work, swap out the CD drive for another known good one.

Solve : My son's limited user account isn't very limited?

Answer»

Hello, I have Win XP Pro service pack 2.

I made my son a limited account because he likes to download and install things. Even with a limited account though he has been able to alter things. I have had to manually deny him access to programs and place a disk quota on him to limit his changes and now he's playing in my control panel!

Can anyone please tell me what to do on my admin account to restrict him from the control panel? google searching brings up 3rd party apps and manual registry tweaks.

Thank you in advance!Maybe he found out your password to administrator account.... Change it

Try setting restrictions manually again. See if it works...
If that doesn't work then I am not sure if you can do anything else.My son is 6 yrs old and does not know how to use the keyboard beyond whats necessary to play flash GAMES. He does not use the Run As command and I can not find a way to change access/deny privileges for control panel.

Also the restrictions that are there are SPECIFICALLY for his profile because I know deny takes precedence over allow. You'd be suprised how much 6 year olds can learn...
I agree...change the Admin password first.I am very knowledgeable about his skill level. And I tested to see if he knew the password by passwording his account and he is unable to access it at all. He's gotten very annoyed by that....hence he decided to play with my nvidia control settings and make things luminescent and generally mess with things.

I wouldn't have posted on the forum for assistance if I hadn't tried basic and simple things to do. I have changed passwords....even to the point of using a complicated chinese phrase so that he wouldn't have any experience in it. I do not write my passwords anywhere nor do others know my passwords. I wish it was as simple as a password change. I have it so that he can't download or install programs. He also can't access either drive from My Computer. Yet for some reason he is able to access control panel.I know it may sound like a stupid question but did you use the shortcuts in "Administrative Rights" folder?

Does your son have his own user account or you have enabled "Guest" account?

I'd suggest him to use Guest account.how did he change anything after you passworded his account I would give him time on the pc by logging into his account of course. I only passworded it to restrict when he is on the pcNot sure how you set it up but on a limited User account he shouldn't be able to do anything in the nVidia Control Panel...good- you have XP pro-

have you tried the group policy editor? (Start->Run gpedit.msc)

YAY! bc programmer thank you! I so forgot where to find the policy editor XD Now my son can't see it! *evil grin*

Thank you EVERYONE who replied and tried to help me. Your assistance is greatly....greatly appreciated!Quote

He's gotten very annoyed by that....hence he decided to play with my nvidia control settings

This (and his age - 6) makes me think he is ***too young*** to be ALLOWED unsupervised access to a computer.
Indeed, when I was 6 I used to play in a sandbox.

Solve : Computer freeze on Copy Files but....?

Answer»

I just got a new Intel i7 2.67ghz computer and have a strange problem when copying files from an external HDD via firewire but with a twist....

When I just select a bunch of files from the HDD and copy them to the computer, after about 6 minutes the computer freezes and nothing works exept the restart button. This will happen every time. I tried different HDD's and different files. Same problem.

BUT when I use an external PROGRAM to copy files (I use Copy Handler) all the files are copied fine.

So I guess it can't be an issue with the firewire or else the computer would freeze like it does when I use XP OS to copy.

What do you guys think? If they are large files or it is a large group this may be why it CHOKES and it may not be the devices at all...
There is i believe a 2G limitation under NTFS.
It may be 4 but i believe it's 2...I have NTFS so I have not the limitation (which is 2GB by the way) and I have been copying this way for 2 years with my duel core and had no problems. This is a NEWER and faster computer and I shouldn't have these problems.Does it happen in the other direction ? ?
I.E. from the external to the machine ? ?
Does it happen if you use a USB external hookup ? ?
Latest bluetooth drivers installed ? ?

What MBoard ?

P.S. Is this a Dell ? ?I wrote in my original post, it's an Intel i7.

The other way is not relevent since it's not a regular external HDD. It's an FS-4 HD witch is a recording HD that goes on a DV camera and records as a BACKUP to the tape. (http://www.focusinfo.com/solutions/catalog.asp?id=3).

The camera men don't use them anymore at events so I use it to capture my DV footage onto it and then I just copy the files from it to the computer.

It only has a DV connection. No USB.I have no experience with those devices...
Possibly someone here who does will chime in soon.Patio, thanks for your reply but I don't think it has to do with any device. I have been doing this with the older computer for years with no problem. I also mentioned that when I do all this copying with an external program, it copies just fine.

That's why I think it's an OS problem and that's why I asked here.perhaps copyhandler uses SYNCHRONOUS rather then asynchronous I/O, and handles the errors better then Windows Explorer?

Solve : computer shuts down during downloaded games, online games, randomly it seems.!?!?

Answer»

Hi, you guys. Here's some of my system info.
HP Pavilion 6623.
Celeron processor : 533mhz
Core version : 4.06
Installed memory: 256mb
Windows XP operating system

This is an old computer, but its what I've got. It was running fine, no crashes or problems until I had this guy install more memory and wipe the old stuff from it. He installed Windows XP, SP3, and the extra memory. So it changed from Win98, with 128 mbs ram to Windows XP with 256 mbs. Upgrades are cool huh? Well....
I got charter cable to HOOK me up with some internet and my "new" computer starts out fine. But it won't play some of the games I download, probably processor speed too slow, but will play some. IF it ever starts the game I can play. Recently its started shutting down and rebooting right in the middle of a great game. javascript:replaceText('%20???',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);
Steams me up. Just stops and then reboots.
I noticed that my I.E.8 crashes ALOT. Sometimes during browsing, or gaming, or in the last part of a download.
I finally read somewhere to change settings so that it won't auto reboot.
That's when I get
ERROR MESSAGE
STOP
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area
0x00000050
then tech info
(0x80461400,0x00000000, 0x805679E1,0x00000000)
(during downloaded game it crashed)
Message advised me to try disabling BIOS shadowing or caching.
Went to (phoenix)BIOS setup but was unable to find any way to do that.

Next day I am playing a very small file sized room escape game online when again BSOD. Different message tho.

BAD_POOL_HEADER

stop 0x00000019
(0x00000020,0x80244838,0x80245578,0xBA846CO)

Since then I've been trying to find info on those messages, and any related to my problem. I am fairly COMPETENT when things are running as they should be, but am at a lose and need advice.
Should I just shoot the guy? Did he mess me up? What can I do? Am I going to have to go back to using my computer as a really big solitaire game? HOPE not. My mom stays on this computer a lot and I am to the point where I want to disconnect it and give IT a good BOOT!
Oh yeah if it matters is wireless network adapter by netgear wg111 or close.
Nuff. Sorry it was so long but was trying to get as much info to you as I could think that might be useful. Thanks for anything you can TELL me.

Pollywog

well, first, those errors are the type you would see with bad RAM. the installed RAM might be incompatible. Personally, I have a 350Mhz (well, now it's 475Mhz...) Machine with 256MB and it ran XP no problems (and a few games) and still runs well, when I use it. It might not necessarily be that the RAM is bad but rather that you either have a mismatched pair of RAM sticks or the motherboard might simply dislike the new stick.

Another thing that could be causing this is your drivers; also, since most of your issues appear to occur only while using the net, it could be a problem with the Wireless device your using (is this a USB device?).not sure if this will help but uninstall IE8 through add/remove programs. When you restart it will automatically roll beck to 7.

How long has it been since the guy wiped it out? It's been about 2 months. Like I said, it didn't do that before it was connected to the internet. I'm gonna try what you guys have suggested, starting with getting rid of IE8. It aggravates me anyway.
I'm worried about removing the memory sticks tho. It won't cause any more problems will it? I mean all of my important stuff is on the disk, not those sticks right? Well wish me luck!
Thanks a million.
Removing RAM has no impact on your hard drive, and your data.

Also...

Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

Solve : Laptop keeps getting an 169 IP address.?

Answer»

i am TRYING to set up my laptop thru comcast and i KEEP getting limited or no connectivity message. I was on the phone with comcast and we tried everything and it kept coming up with the 169 IP Address. can anyone help me?? Thank youDoes your laptop connect through a wired or wireless router?WELL i have used it on the wireless when i was in orlando a WEEK ago, i was trying to connect it to wired router today. That's why you are getting an IP address with 169. Those are common for LAN setups, and the only way around it is to not use a router.

Can you connect if you bypass the router? Perhaps the router is bad.

Or possibly the cable you are USING is bad. I am using the cable for my desktop and it is working fine. the DSL is hooked up the modem. I mean the physical cable that you are using to connect it, or are you disconnecting the desktop to connect the laptop?yes i did that.

Solve : Safemode start up stops at \drivers\Mup.sys?

Answer»

I have a fairly new Dell desktop running XP and I have been running AVG and Spyware Doctor.

Things have gotten progressively worse. Yesterday I COULD log on but then the pc would freeze and I'd have to reboot. Now It won't boot at all. I've tried all the F8 options-- "Safe Mode", "Start Normally", "last configuration that worked", etc. Safemode start up stops at "...system32\\drivers\Mup.sys"

A few days AGO AVG found "b.exe" as a trojan and I manually deleted it from my Temp folder. Things got worse from there. AVG also found something called "Cognac" in my registry. Spyware Doctor would run a scan and find nothing, then I get a pop up saying it blocked a malicious attempt. The log would show repeated blocks of malicious stuff but then the full scan would come up clean. AVG also stopped finding anything bad but here I am, totally locked out. I'd HATE to reformat my PC as I have family pictures that would be lost.

I ran an older CD called "EMERGENCY RECOVERY PRO" from Linux Web Store and one of the scans said "windows not found" (??!!!)

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.MUP.SYS is rather nasty problem.
Nasty, because there is not sure solution to it.
The best, I can do for you, are two links:
http://www.aitechsolutions.net/mup-sys-resolved.html
inside, there another sub-link to:
http://www.aitechsolutions.net/winxpnoboot.html
I'm having the same issue with mup.sys.

When I put in my XP install disc, it never gets to the screen where I can choose repair. I am stuck at the blue screen with 'Windows Setup' at the top and 'Setup is starting Windows' at the bottom. It has loaded all the hardware drivers and dlls.

All the fixes I've found, including the ones listed at the link you provided, assume that I can get to that 'repair' prompt.

Any clues?

Thankstaskready, please start your own thread and provide as much information as you can.

Just because the problem seems the same to you doesn't mean it is the same. We can help you far better with your own thread.Wow...
Lotsa .Mup.sys's this week...

I assume you're the Network Admin for your facility. It depends on how you currently manage your network. MS should have network admin tools for this, which is likely a component of Windows Server 2003.>Spiceworks< is just about the best free tool for this job. It's best if you dedicate a machine (an XP box will do) to running Spiceworks, since it can chew up a lot of resources when it's scanning. Leave it on 24/7. Solve : Screen Resolution Help?

Quote from: computeruler on July 24, 2009, 04:52:48 PM

I did some googling and the max you can set it to is 1600x1200x32 @ 85Hz, so you really wont be able to get anything bigger then a 20" unless you upgrade your gpu

Yeah, I just need my screen to get to at least 1024x768. I don't really care to get my resolution higher then that. It would only be a bonus. Thanks though. The screen goes black to prevent damage from occuring, overdriving the guns can be fatal for a MONITOR.

Great catch computeruler, thanks for that.I iz epic googler.
Oh and that size monitor is about 15" And if you only want it just so you can play that game... well, what game is it?Empire Earth. The first one?Ummm... I really don't know. I have two discs. One that says Empire Earth and another that is Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest. I've been getting into computer games slowly lately so I don't know too much about them. The second disk is the expasion pack to empire earth. Your computer should be able to run it. But check the link provided just to be sure.
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtestThat link doesn't include the game in question, just Empire Earth II and beyond.Yeah I TRIED it for Empire Earth II and it said fail on the video card part. The parts of the video card I failed were Video HW Transform & Lighting and Pixel Shader Ver.Ohh well the game is really old so you should be ok.Most games I'm trying pretty much have me fail at the Video HW Transform & Lighting part. Those games on there are a LITTLE newer though. That game you are trying to play is from AROUND 2002 and has very low system requirements I double checked the specs for Empire Earth and version 1 does require 1024x768.

I thought there might be a patch for it, but apparently not.

Solve : Sudden Crashes Without Warning?

Answer»

Normally I'm able to figure out what's going on and fix a problem, but this one really has me stumped -- I need your guys' advice.

I have an Alienware laptop running Windows XP Pro, SP3. I've had it for over a year now.

The Problem:
Sometimes, my computer will crash with no warning. When I say "crash," I mean it simply turns off. The screen goes black, the components inside turn off, fan stops blowing, etc. I never receive ANY warnings or errors beforehand.
The only two "indications" I've noticed are as follows: First, if I am typing at the time, a second or two beforehand I will no longer be able to type. I can move my mouse around, but that seems to be about it. Second, sometimes the screen will flicker or seem to refresh. Normally when the screen refreshes (and your icons' images have to reload, and any folders you have open return to the "top") it happens quickly, but before a crash it seems to happen "slower" (the screen flickers black).
Only on two occasions has my computer BSOD'd following these crashes, and each time the screen shut off before I could see what it said.

Frequency and Other Stuff:
These crashes don't happen regularly, but seem to be connected to my use of the computer. Sometimes they're very infrequent -- once or twice a month. Other times, like lately, I experience it once a day or so.

What frustrates me is that I can't seem to trace it to any particular cause.
No particular program seems to cause it; however, from what I can tell, the more programs I run, the more likely it is to happen.
I don't think overheating is the cause, since these crashes occur when my computer doesn't feel very hot (and believe me I could fry eggs on the thing at times), when I'm using a COOLING pad, and also in the dead of winter when my room is freezing.

And So...
That's what info I have. I HAVE contacted Alienware about this in the past, but they were completely stumped. (I would call again, but I believe my warranty has run out.) Because these crashes aren't always frequent, and because I can't seem to force them to happen, they had trouble determining the source.

If you guys think you know what it is, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Otherwise, I would like to know what else I can do to hopefully diagnose this problem. Are there any programs that I can run, that would catch the details of these crashes right before they happen? What should I look for in, say, the system Event Viewer?1. Disable "Restart on error" FEATURE...

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

You may see some error message. If so, post back what it says.

2. Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows logo key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

3. Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

I checked the Minidump folder before and after I restarted, and there was nothing in it.Your CPU is way too hot.
Turn the computer off, and clean inside the case with a can of compressed air.
Turn it on, and see, if all fans are running.Seems odd... it runs a lot hotter than that without crashing when I play games. (I'll try to get a temp reading of that later.)

What temperature range should my CPU be in?Does your laptop set directly on the table or on a support platform? I found that my laptop would get hot before I built one [I'm a cheap-a-ziod] but you can buy one too . After putting it on the platform I built the fan rarely comes on. Could be a ventilation problem.

Alan <>< Oooops...mea culpa...disregard my previous comment, since it's laptop.
I'm sorry.Open Windows Explorer.

It just happened again. Immediately after I restarted, I looked in the Minidump folder and didn't find anything.

...clean inside the case with a can of compressed air.
Bought a can and blew out what I could, but I don't yet have the tools to open the thing up, so that'll have to wait.

Quote
Does your laptop set directly on the table or on a support platform?
Sometimes I have it sitting on a cooling pad with fans built in to help cool it. Other times I don't, but I almost always have it sitting on a flat surface. (Not on anything like cushions or sheets or any material that might block the vents.)
However, that doesn't seem to solve the problem, as it just crashed while it was sitting on its cooling pad.

By the way, here's another temp reading after having run for awhile. These are the temps while it is sitting on a cooling pad:
Those temps are fine for laptop.
I'd like to see dmp files. My laptop BSOD'd yesterday shortly after starting, and it didn't shut down immediately afterward, so I was able to copy down some information:
ASWSP.SYS
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Stops: 0x00000050 (0xF797E044, 0x00000000, 0xED22F4DF, 0x00000000)

Also, it produced a dmp file, which I've attached. I didn't upload any dmp files until now because when my laptop crashed before this it didn't write any dmp files.

[attachment deleted by admin]Well, it's hard to diagnose your whole problem with just one DUMP file, but in this case, the error was caused by aswSP.SYS, which is Avast file.
If you use Avast, try to reinstall it.
I'm going to check out this problem with Avast -- it seems that other users have had the same problem. If I can't resolve it I'll just uninstall it.

I'm trying to remember if I've used Avast since I bought this laptop -- if I have, then it might be the cause of all the crashes I've been having. Otherwise, this might just be a DIFFERENT problem...I'm using Avast myself with no problem.
As I said, you may try to reinstall it.

Black screen no mouse. One of the non copied files is mscorwks.dll what do I do try the install/repair again?I'm trying to install again from the windows xp disk.

I reboot from the cdrom and run the first install choice. I press f8 and agree.

Now I'm at a blue screen. It reads, "the following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer. Then in a rectangular box below are three choices:

-: partition1 [fat]
C: partition2 [ntfs]
E: partition3 [FAT32]

To the right there's numbers of mb and mb free in parenthesis

What do I pick and for which of the 3 partitions? There's three options enter=install d=delete f3=quitI'm back. Can someone help?I tried running the install again on PARTITION c

It tells me that there's already an operating system on partition c.

I Thank you.Only by changing the screen resolution size that i know of...I don't think there is a way to do that without changing screen resolution. There's nothing wrong with changing resolution as it gives you a certain time period for prevuing the changes before it automatically reverts itself, but leave registry modification to the experts (even I don't mess with it).
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Appearance>Advanced>Active Title Bar>Increase Size to 35>Click OK>Apply>OK

Changing the size of the Active Title Bar increases the size of the icons.Resolved

Back up your data, reformatt the hard drive, and reinstall XP

I'm pretty sure that there is a BETTER way to do this.Don't reinstall just yet.

You cannot 'upgrade' Windows 2000 to XP.
How exactly did you install XP?
Can you boot into 2000 and XP?I just had an XP DISC and inserted it in my PC and it installed it. When I boot up now I get the choice of XP or 2000. XP is the default and after 30 seconds it boots up in XP or I can hit enter, when XP is highlighted and it boots up in XP. I am just concerned about disc space although I have 20 GB Harddrive. Can you boot into Windows 2000?Yes I can boot into either O/S.If you just want Windows XP, and you want to get rid of Windows 2000, RESTART the ENTIRE installation processbut make sure you format both partitions and merge them into one.
This way you can install Windows XP on one, 20GB partition.Thanks. I'll try that.

I get a windows no disk error message
When? On boot?
What's the EXACT message?
How are you GETTING out of it?The message comes up randomly. If I knew how to display it on this forum I would, but since I can't here GOES. It says windows- no disk exception processing message c00000 13 PARAMETERS 75b65f7c4 and then repeats the last 9 DIGITS several times. I can sometimes delet it by hitting the X several times or if that fails by hitting continue or cancel. The dvd drive has a problem in that it will not open with the buttton. I have to go through my computer and click eject. If this is your error:

check here: http://www.consumingexperience.com/2007/11/windows-no-disk-exception-processing.htmlYes it is!!! I used the link you gave me. CHANGED the letter assignments of my dvd & floppy drives, and haven't seen that thing since the reboot. YOU ARE DA MAN, Thank you.Cool

Solve : My computer takes way too long to load!?

Answer»

My step-son wants an external HARDDRIVE. He wants to get a 1 terabyte THOUGH. WOULD this solve the PROBLEM or will we have to just get more RAM. Allof this is confusing to me.

Max your ram and you will think you have a new computer. Go to crucial.com, use their free scanner and then buy what ever they reccomend. You might save a little by buying the ram somewhere else but their prices aren,t bad. LOL from wannabeQuote from: patio on July 28, 2009, 12:10:47 PM
