I WOULD like to get a program or file that can do this easily, there must be some smart hacker who can do this. Please.[/color]
It should be done automatically after installing your MBoard drivers...
Have you tried this ? ?Oh I wish it were that easy, sorry but I already have WinXp installed, AHCI should be enabled prior to installing WinXP, even then you have to add the drivers using the F6 method.

Thanks for the thought,

God bless you

Thanks for the thought, I have the Intel 925XE chipset, ICH6R, in my manual I am told that if I want AHCI enabled I need to go to the Intel website and download the drivers, and these drivers can not be installed WITHOUT having AHCI enabled in the bios, and as you know you can't enable it in the bios without having the drivers installed, I am going to try and find a good repair install for XP and try the F6 method of installing the drivers.
If you have a link tosuch a site please post it here.

Thanks, God bless you

JimHave you tried to boot up and enter setup and enable it ? ?
If so what exactly happens ? ?
ANOTHER option to try would be to remove all power to the machine...remove a side panel...and remove the CMOS BATTERY for 10 minutes or so which will re-set the BIOS to it's default config.Quote from: patio on January 30, 2009, 08:53:49 AM

When I do that, REBOOT and enable AHCI in the bios, I get the BSOD, my PC will not boot, it tries, sees the beginning of Windows then shuts down and reboots, eventually I have to return to the bios and disable AHCI then it boots completely in windows.

As for removing the the battery, the same thing happens.

Thanks

Solve : MBR cuurrupt.?

Answer»

Dear Team,
In my pc MBR IS CURRUPT & i am UNABLE to install xp again because it doesn't prompt installation screen with first boot device cd rom. and i use xp cd for its installation. so please give the solution.

Thanks...........................You cant boot to the CD?
If your computer has TWO CD drives, make sure you put the CD in the master drive.i am not able to boot cd in the same condition & i have only one cd drive & 1 HDD.
CD ROM IS PRIMARY MASTER
HDD IS PRIMARY SLAVE. Is the CD Drive first in the Boot Menu in the BIOS?how many time you thake to undersatnd that i select cd rom first boot device. The HDD should be jumpered master whenever possible.
What type of XP CD is this ? ?
It should be bootable.

If and when you do get it to boot to the XP CD at the first screen press "R" to enter the recovery console.
At the prompt type in fixmbr and hit Enter.
Then remove the CD and re-boot.Quote from: johnshell08 on January 30, 2009, 05:37:48 AM

how many time you thake to undersatnd that i select cd rom first boot device.

if you SELECTED it as the first boot device, it would be BOOTING from it. If it isn't, either the CD is not bootable (or scratched or damaged somehow) or there is something wrong with the drive.

Does the CD drive light up during bootup?

Solve : Windows ME explorer.exe closes on startup?

Answer»

I have a new install of Windows ME and i have just UPDATED it to ie6 via win update. The install restarted the computer but now explorer closes just after starting up. CTRL-ALT-DEL shows no programs running. I just have a blank desktop no icons or taskbar.

The same thing HAPPENS in safe mode and ive tried system restore to several different points but it failed each time. Ive noticed that explorer does start as i saw the taskbar flash up for a second but then it goes.
Dont know if it MATTERS but i did most of the windows update before updating to ie6.
Any ideas or will i have to reinstall again...? Windows Me has tons of vulnerabilities....was this system protected while before and while patched. Sounds viral to me if not CORRUPTED.

I'd rebuild and make sure this system is behind a firewall and/or router before getting it online for updates. The pc had avg installed from USB before it was online and it is behind a router with firewall.
As it was a new install i might as well reinstall it and try again i guess.
I might also try another hard drive as the other is very old

Solve : Going back to XP?

Answer»

My kid's computer is messed up. I had to reinstall Vista (which I purchased and installed, the computer came with XP). I installed the Vista CD from my new computer which came with Vista. Stupid, I know but that's what happened. Now my kids computer says the version of Vista is bootleg. It won't connect to the internet to purchase a product key anymore.
My question is, if I purchase Windows XP, can I install it by simply putting it in the disk drive? Will it work even though there is no op. system on the computer right now? I don't want to risk spending $150 for an OS if it's not going to work, and not being able to get my $ back.
I know this sounds like a crazy problem, but its really happening to me. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote from: butterflyeleven on February 02, 2009, 06:53:43 PM

I purchase Windows XP, can I install it by simply putting it in the disk drive?
Yes. You will need to set the BIOS to boot from CD drive first, rather than the hard drive.

I take it you don't have the CD for the original Windows XP installation on your kid's computer. No, I don't have the original CD. That's why I used the wrong Vista installation CD to start with. I know how to change the boot sequence. Do I have to leave it set permanently set to boot from the CD/ROM drive, or will it be normal once I install XP? I did try changing the boot sequence and installing the CD they said was "bootleg" that way, and nothing happened. Why didn't that work, and are you sure that a newly purchased OS will work that way? Thank you so much for answering my post. I didn't have any idea that I couldn't use a Vista CD that I paid for on 2 computers that I paid for that both had Vista.
My kids computer originally had XP, and I'd like to go back to that so I can use it to work with a CS Co. who's software is only compatible with XP. I just don't want to waste my money if the computer won't ever work again. It won't connect to the internet so I can't just buy a product key from Windows. As we all know, you can't return opened software, so if I buy an OS and it doesn't work, I'm just stuck. Thanks so much for your help.Quote from: butterflyeleven on February 03, 2009, 07:49:09 AM
Do I have to leave it set permanently set to boot from the CD/ROM drive ...
No, once XP is installed, access the BIOS again and change first boot device back to hard drive.

Quote from: butterflyeleven on February 03, 2009, 07:49:09 AM
I just don't want to waste my money if the computer won't ever work again.
Assuming no hardware problems that will interfere with normal functioning, then, sure, it will work again. Most likely, you will have to install NUMEROUS drivers. You might want to search for them before proceeding with purchase and installation of Windows, OK. I know I don't have the driver CDs that came with the computer when I bought it. The whole box of them got lost when I moved, that's why I didn't have the OS installation CD in the first place, and stupidly used one that came with another computer. I'm guessing that I can't use driver CD's from another computer either?.... Where do I go to get/purchase drivers? Thank you for being so helpful. Visit the computer MANUFACTURER's website. You should be able to find most or all drivers you'll need there, and they will be free.you can download them free from the manufacturer's website. Can you tell us the manufacturer/model of the machine? We could help you find the drivers for the machine if you do put XP on it.

- the Not connecting to the net problem could be a Vista Driver issue as well, since if you used a "recovery" type CD for another computer in the Machine it likely wouldn't have the proper network driver, and thus be unable to access to net to get another key as you've described- So before you pay for XP, we could find out if it is a Vista driver issue.Ok. What happened in the first place is my kids computer tried to install Vista SP 2, and got the error message "Service Pack could not be installed. Reverting changes. Do not turn off computer." It stayed like this for 2 weeks, and I called Microsoft and they helped me fix the problem, BUT I had to totally reinstall Windows. Since I no longer had the Vista CD, I thought it would be ok to use the Vista CD that came with MY computer. The kids computer was fine for about a month and then it started saying that I was using a bootleg version of Vista. There was an OPTION to purchase a product key online, but I didn't have the $ to do it.
Then one day our cable went out. I had the kids computer running on a wireless connection with a wireless adapter. Since the cable went out, the wireless connection changed, and since there is no Windows on the kids computer, I wasn't able to reestablish the wireless connection. So that's why there's no internet.
I have the $ now to purchase a product key or a new OS, but now the kids computer won't connect to the internet to allow me to just do it from there. If I'm going to have to purchase a totally new OS, I'd like to put XP on it so I can work from it if possible.
My kids computer is a Dell Dimension E310. It was built in Nov. 2005, and it came with XP installed. When Vista came out, I purchased Vista and did a clean install. I now have niether the XP CD nor the Vista CD for that computer.
My computer is a Dell XPS 420. It was built in Feb 2008, and came with Vista installed. I used the CD from my computer when Microsoft was helping me fix the kids computer.
Thank you so much for your help.
I AGREE with them all. Everything they say should work

Solve : Black Screen and Pointer on Startup?

Answer»

I recently removed some malware from my computer and now I'm unable to access my welcome screen on startup. All I am presented with is a black screen with a mouse pointer. Some preliminary research TELLS me that this could be caused from file CORRUPTION resulting from the malware.

From what I understand, the only solution is to run a Windows XP repair. However, I don't have a Windows CD to use, only my Vaio recovery CDs.

My questions -- are there any other solutions I may be overlooking? If not, I plan on running a recovery, but I need to back up my DATA. Is there a way to back up to an external hard drive without being able to access Windows?

THANK you in advance!
- pwapilotSee Here...
As far as doing a repair install of the system which will LEAVE your data intact all you need to do is borrow an XP CD...the version and installed service packs need to match.

Solve : Removing and uninstalling WGA?

Answer»

I had followed the instructions to remove this for good.

<STRONG>Renaming wga files, removing the product code, removing all wga files for good, removing the registry enteries.

That was great it did not appear after a couple of restarts, and shutdowns.

But a couple of hours LATER , when i shut the computer down for the night, i had the security icon on the "turn of computer tab" telling me there was one item for download and ready to INSTALL.

In other words it would install it first before it shut down, so i had no option but to shut it down, i then restarted the computer to see what it was, and low and behold it had downloaded the "windows genuine advantage validation TOOL" again.

How can i GET round this to stop it downloading it again.

If i done all this again, but this time "CHECKED" the "notify me but don't automatically download or install them" OR turn off automatic updates. would this stop the download of this WGA VALIDATION tool again.

My current setting was on AUTOMATIC UPDATES.

i am running a windows xp/sp 2.

Thankyou for your replysI have a very strong suspicion that helping to remove WGA is against the forum rules, because it can help piracy. So sorry, i think really the answer in the question.

But people can unknowingly buy an unlicence copy, as i did
I did not know a thing about computers, and they probably new this when i bought it.

But i have been stuck with it, i will be getting a licenced one soon , as this computer is old, about 10 years, but it had xp installed on it, thats why i bought it really just to learn onYou should turn off automatic updates if you do not want to receive Microsoft updates.

Solve : ATIVVAXX.DLL Error?

Answer»

This has been driving me crazy for hours. ATI Support was even LOST as to what I should do. They suggested a full XP Reload. ativvaxx.dll is a universal driver for ATI cards. Plenty of resources online about this error but no solutions. Error msg on boot up says FAILED to load the ativvaxx.dll. I've reinstalled the drivers in normal and safe mode. I also regsvr32 the file. Finally reloaded XP and all my programs. Worked fine for a few hrs, then the error appeared again. Copied the dll file to all the specified paths where it was suppose to reside. Obviously one of the programs I am loading is CAUSING this CONFLICT. Not sure how to track this bad boy down. Any ideas?

HPXW6200 = Work PC

Latest ATI DriverThe card still under warranty?Yeah, just got it. BRAND new. Funny too because I'm a Nividia man. This was just a quick dual monitor fix purchase from Staples for someone at work. Get rid of it while you can.Maybe ur right, that's the only thing it could be. Only thing left! ThxI would think even for a moment.

Solve : microsoftwindowsme?

I tried to install flashplayer on my hard drive. I rec'd a pop-up which told me I could not do that - fine how do I get rid of this message. It keeps coming back and even when I close it out. If I click ok, then it downloads. It is like a bad penny. I would appreciate any help that someone can give me. I am afraid that somehow I might erase my program that I have on my harddrive. It is driving me nuts and I am an old woman.Go to Control PANEL then Add/remove programs. Find flash player and uninstall it.to JJ3000

I appreciate your help but adobe flashplayer is not listed in control panel. It cannot be downloaded to my hard drive. I just need to get the pop-up that tells me that off my screen. Anymore ideas, I would appreciate for this problem. ThanksIts blatting because you must be visiting a WEBSITE that has flash content. That is why it is not in Control Panel for add/remove programs because it was NEVER installed. you will continue to get this blat each time you go to a web site with flash embedded in the web pages.

I'd look into why it wont install, are you the administrator of the system. Does the latest Flash not work with Windows Me maybe....maybe you need a newer browser to support the latest flash player.

Easiest way to supress is unfortunately to install the required plug in for the browser that i know of. You can also try Firefox browser to FIX this maybe. I think Firefox has an embedded flash player plug in to AVOID this mess that you are having. Thanks Dave-I thought it might be easy to get this off - like using something on the keyboard. Oh well, I might have to live with this but it certainly is frustrating when it pops up - I have tried to ignore but it gets me in the end - before I can close out I have to get it off. Have a good one!It may have been a corrupted install...
Visit Here follow the instructions and then re-boot.
DLoad a fresh copy and see how that goes...Thanks Patio:

I believe this is something that will work for me. I have not tried but feel good that it will solve my problem. I feel good about it too...

Solve : Please recommend a BootCD to juggle drive letters, or a Dual Boot system.?

Answer»

Windows XP runs in a 20 GB partition C:\, with 50% space unused.
Before creating an image of C:\ I purge unwanted junk.
The latest image is then "validated", but this does not prove bootability.

To PROVE bootability, the image must be restored to C:\ and the computer restarted.
If the computer failed to restart, the latest image was worthless,
AND C:\ is now TRASHED so it is too late to create another image.

Therefore I never "test" bootability of an image that probably will not be needed,
and when I NEED to restore an image I am a little nervous.

For Christmas my Laptop received a much larger hard drive.
I now have 20 GB C:\ active, plus 15 GB R:\ primary, plus other logic partitions.

Now I can restore the latest image to 15 GB R:\,
and a file/folder comparison with C:\ gives a little more confidence.

Please advise me of a Boot-CD that can change quickly swap the partitions,
e.g. hide 20 GB C:\ partition, and make 15 GB partition Active as C:\,
so I can see for myself that the latest image is (or is not) bootable,
AND regardless of bootability, to subsequently hide the 15 GB partition,
and make the 20 GB partition active as C:\ with no loss of data.

I have Easeus Partition Manager which :-
under Windows can change which partitions are active, but cannot hide or alter the letter of the partition which was active, nor the partition which is to become active.
It provides a Boot-CD that uses Linux, and avoids confusing me by concealing any knowledge of drive letters - it can only hide/unhide and make active.
If 15 GB is hidden I could make it Active, then I could hide 20 GB, then I could unhide 15 GB and with luck it might DEFAULT to C:\ - or would Linux set it to Z:\ ! !

I want a Boot-CD that will allow me to see what I am doing, and allow me to undo any damage.

I could use a Linux Live CD.
Learning to use Linux whilst manipulating partitions is possible,
but I am not that brave.

An alternative might be to dual boot.
I assume a Laptop with only one physical drive cannot dual boot between two XP partitions.
Also, I have pre-installed XP with no CD Installation disc.
There are Acer recovery discs that never satisfied Windows File Protection when it wanted a CD.

I have created a Bart-PE disc.
It did not include the tools to meet my need.
Please advise of a version that might help.

Although I have no Windows CD, Bart found installation files in C:\ that allowed it to create XP with SP1 (probably as it left the factory, because there are SP2 and SP3 service pack archives that were subsequently downloaded and installed).

Image files with a decent image app can and should be verified at the time they are created...
What app do you use ? ?Hi

I use Acronis.

After creating I can verify, which involves reading the entire image and validating thousands of checksums per MByte, but even so I have SEEN advice on their users forum that you will not know if it is bootable until you try to boot it - good to know, but better to find out without trashing what had been the latest working system.

I believe most people never have any problems - I just do not want to be in the unfortunate minority, and I am hoping that with more partitions available I can test bootability without risking the principle 20 GB partition.

Alan

I recently went from using SYMANTEC Ghost to Paragon Disk Manager for my backup OS partition imaging, and I so agree that you have to test it. You need to be sure that you know how to restore and that it works. I got the Paragon app free on a magazine cover disk, and a compatible version is also on the BartPE bootable CD that one can find by looking in the right places.

Dias

I saw the magazine cover disk and downloaded.
Frustratingly the download link was not broken, so time and download MBytes were wasted obtaining a Partition Manager that insists upon a serial number before installation, and links me to their website which demands an email address etc., and upon completing the form it says an email will be sent to me - but it never arrives.
Several times on different DAYS I have registered with different valid email addresses, but nothing ever arrives.

I have downloaded and burnt several ISO images for Boot Discs that boot o.k., but either they cannot make the changes I require, or to avoid confusing me with Linux ALLOCATED drive letters they refrain from giving me any information.

I have burnt a Bart-PE Bootable CD, and this does not help me.

I found a forum where some months ago someone had developed an MMC plug-in for use with Bart-PE, but the download link is now broken.

I would appreciate a link for a download that could help me.
It does not need to move/re-size partitions etc.
I only need it to juggle drive letters, and change the active partition.

There have been no comments upon making this single drive laptop dual boot between two Windows XP partitions. Should I assume that, as I feared, the odds are heavily stacked against someone without the Windows Installation Disk ?

Alan
Ultimate Boot CD.
Use with caution...there are some powerful tools included.Thank you Patio

Yours is not the only voice of caution.

I Googled to locate where it came from, and got 6,610,000 hits.

All 6,610,000, well at least the top 50 I looked at, had the warning
"This site may harm your computer."
Even sourceforge.net/projects/ubcd/ was slurred with that warning.

Powerful stuff.

I am now downloading UBCD4Win 3.22

Even the Internet is apprehensive.
It started at about 2000 kbps, and then it cut down to 160 kbps

Perhaps I curn burn an ISO and give feedback next week ! !

Regards
Alan
You may want the bootable .iso not the Windows version.
You need it to be bootable for your needs.

http://nbicomputers.com/Downloads/ubcd411iso.rar

This link runs pretty good.
Then use the program of your choice to create a bootable CD.Thank you

There were so many to choose from, and I went for the latest Windows because it seemed to be a BartPE type thing - aggravating waiting for it to search for installation files (no installation disk with my pre-installed system) but at least no Linux battles as with my earlier attempts.

Your recommendation is a much smaller, smoother and faster download.
My ESET antivirus seems to be more worried about *.exe files than *.rar files.

I am looking forward to trying it, but first I have to eat.

Many thanks

Solve : Microsoft "Outlook" shuts down and restarts?

Answer»

Using Windows XP PRO, with Office Pro 2007 installed, Outlook, a few seconds after starting up, displays the "error occurred" message and shuts down, only to automatically restart, over and over and over. I ran the "Office Pro" installation disc and "repaired" Office, but the problem is still there. The computer is in the office of a family-owned construction business, and an e-mail from a client (the Wendy's chain) duplicates itself every time the program restarts. I erased the message, but it reappears every time the program restarts. Must I delete the entire Office suite and reinstall it? Can I just delete the Outlook and reinstall it? I also tried System Restore, to no avail. Helllllpp! Was anything new installed on the PC recently? What is the error in the Eventvwr "APP"Nothing new was installed before the problem began. It APPEARED to start when the email arrived from their customer (Wendy's), but they had three other emails from them the same day, before the one that started to copy itself with each reload. It was the standard Windows message: An error has occurred and Outlook has to close. And then it automatically reopens. And CLOSES. Etc..Did you try creating a new outlook profile? What is the backend? Exchange SERVER or POP? You can also try Outlook in safemode http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298838Got it! It seemed to be acting like a MILD virus, so I tried Threatfire and Comodo on it, and lo and behold, SALVATION! Between them, they found five Malware items, that, when removed, cleared up the problem.
Thanks for the input. Catch you on the next one.

Solve : Computer shuts off when bumped??

Answer»

I'm having a weird PROBLEM with my computer. Every time I bump it really hard, First time it was an accident, it just shuts off and the power LED starts slowly flashing and I can't turn the computer back on.

I get it to work by turning off the power at the back, hitting it a few times, then turning it back on. It's really weird and I opened the PC to check if anything was loose, but everything seems to have a STRONG CONNECTION.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.have you tried useing a new powercord?Yes, I've checked all the connections outside and inside the computer and everything is ok. The power cord is not the problem I know that for sure.Quote

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Don't bump it.Look for any loose hardware.....If you cant see anything on the outside, you may have to check the power cord connection inside the computer. Good luckThanks everyone. I'll try not to bump it haha. But yea I'll have to check all the hardware connections again. That PSU may be GETTING ready to go South...Maybe the comp is just a gluten for punishment and really likes it when you have to get rough with it. Solve : How do I completely remove a RAID configuration??

Answer»

I am fit to be tied at this point....ok...about a week ago I updated drivers on my sony vgc-ra940g. Dont ask me why but I downloaded a RAID driver (?). Since then I have not been ABLE to start my computer. Windows hangs and never starts. I cant even get into safe mode. Well, I can but when I hit any of the options it runs thru a screen of commands and gets hung on the same one each time, "mup.sys"

I did a little RESEARCH and discovered that I should try and remove the RAID configuration. So I went into the BIOS setup but I cannot identify where it would be. For lack of anything bettter to do, I reset everything to default values, but that did nothing.

Prior to GOING to setup...a screen flashed in front of me, and showed RAID in bright red letters...but then the screen quickly disappeared and went directly into BIOS.

Can anyone help me?

Can you get to the screen and choose "Last Known Good Configuration"?

Without knowing the BIOS manufacturer it is difficult to help

Alan <><

The BIOS manufacturer? Can I find that out just going into the BIOS system? I went into safe mode and choose last known good config and it still hangs at Windows. USUALLY it will be one of the first things that flash on the screen when the system boots.

You might have to do a repair with the Windoze disk. Do you have that?

Alan <>< I took the computer to work and gave it to one of the tech guys...things don't look good presently in regard to saving my DATA I am sad to say....this makes me very anxious, to say the least.

It seems this RAID thing did more damage then either one of us first imagined. I cant begin to tell you what it did, but my interpretation of the tech's response was that it split the data on two drives (one virtual?) and it looks as if one drive failed or at least that's what it is saying, but like I said this is my interpretation of what he said. It may be somewhat incorrect.

We do agree that it is highly unlikely a drive failed. It is too much of a coincidence that once the RAID driver was downloaded, the computer crashed. Hence, they are directly related.

It may be he is not experienced with this type of problem and thought with the resources at work, it would be a piece of cake retrieving the data...this doesn't seem to be the case, presently.

I did find my original Windows disk, so that's good. However, I am not sure it will help at this point. I am fearful about not retrieving my data.....there is so *censored* much! Any suggestions I can get would be very helpful.

He sounds out of his league...no offense to him.
Get the machine back before he does anything and follow the guide below for retrieving your data...

Here

Best of Luck.Ya think??Patio,

I read the link you sent. Thanks, although it looks a little scary, I think I can handle it. I have I have a couple of questions.

Frist: Can I slave my hard disk to the laptop I am working on right now?No...it should be on a Desktop machine.
If it's a laptop HDD let us know...you will need an adapter.

Solve : Weird Computer Error?

Answer»

So let me explain what happened and why it happened.

My computer stopped working one day and will no longer work. The computer turns on and sounds like usual but my monitor READS "No signal input or cable disconnected". The way this happened was I broke my keyboard and the PS2 connection so I decided to cut the wires and try putting them in the holes since I had some idea after examining the connector, which wires went where well everything was working till the last wire and the computer shut off and now I get this error. The first thing I did was unplug the comp and remove the battery from the motherboard. I let it sit but it didn't work.... I left the batt out and cable unplugged an 3 weeks later everything was working again. After logging in I waited for app loads only to find my computer freeze up on me which it has only done it once in 6 YEARS. (This computer was built by a cousin using pats from Newegg.com.

I got it to come back up once again but freeze at log in.

My mouse didn't work either times I got in (I use Microsoft Intellimouse or w/e, USB, have to install software to make it work.)

I'm really at a LOSS without my computer if anyone has any ideas on things I could try or possible things to replace I really appreciate the time you take for your response.

Thank you for taking the time to read.
B.D.SmithYou have probably succeeded in frying that MBoard...
If there is a SHOP in your area that does repairs at board level it's possible it could be salvaged by replacing the PS2 port but who knows...it might cost more than a new board.I figured I did. Just wanted the final verdict haha. I just don't see why if I fried it why it came back to working after 3 weeks of unplug. But after I join the ARMY and go through BCT I'm planning on buying a new comp since I'm still in the IDE, VGA and single core processing era haha.

thanks againYou might not have time for computer games until about your 2ND or 3rd year in the Army

Solve : Keyboard not working, can't log in?

Answer»

None of the keys on my keyboard are working... number lock doesn't light up either. I've tried another keyboard as well as different ports but neither keyboard works.

Now I can't log into Windows because I have a password-protected admin account and the onscreen keyboard doesn't open until you log into Windows. I've tried to start in safe mode by pressing F8 before the windows screen comes up but it didn't open in safe mode... i arrived at the log in screen as usual. How can I log in? Why is my keyboard not working? Is there any way to open the on-screen keyboard USING the mouse at the welcome screen?

FYI:

I have Windows XP Home and have tried restarting the computer several times with both keyboards.
None of the keyboards are wireless keyboard and they plug into the purple port in the back of my hard drive.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.I'm assuming this is a USB keyboard...have you tried a PS2 keyboard ? ?He said 'purple plug' so it is a PS/2.

Most likely scenario is a bad PS/2 connection on the HOBO. They sometimes either break the solder joint or that get bent out of shape. Not a good idea to fool with it with power on, there is a chance he may zap both keyboards. It sure does zap the mouse.

If this is a recent mobo he can use a USB keyboards and the BIOS will acknowledge it by flashing the three LEDS during POST.

Or get a PS/2 to USB adapter. That can extend the life of the mobo without the need to buy a USB keyboard. If the keyboards are OK.

EDIT: Cell phones and wireless mice and some other devices can STOP a keyboard for working properly.ROFL...

Solve : difference in a winXP OS disk for HP, Dell, Gateway ....?

Answer»

What is the difference between a WinXP disk that comes with a Dell computer on it vs say one that comes with a gateway or a compaq or HP or viao computer? Can they be used interchangeably?

Reason Im asking is I have a Dell computer that has a WinXP disk. Unfortunately, the HD in it broke. I have another computer which is a Gateway but which has windows 98 on it. Im wondering if I can use the dell WinXP disk to install winXP on the gateway. I mean, a machine is a machine right?
No.
You can't.
This is by design.

You can however request a Recovery CD from Gateway...Quote from: shashgo on February 04, 2009, 10:04:14 AM

get another disk for the Dell and/or use the disk from the gateway machine, then you can use the Dell Winxp CD..

So I can use a Ford gearbox in my Mercedes, because a car is a car, right? I can date my grandmother because a woman is a woman, right?

ahhh hehehe now thats funny. okay so what in the operating systems is diffferent for the two DIFFERENT kids of computers
No.
The Drivers and the install packages are different...
XP is XP.Put simply, the big computer makers like Dell, Gateway, HP, etc, get a special bulk deal from Microsoft and part of that is that they use special versions of the OS install disk that only work with that make and sometimes only that model. The installer can detect the hardware such as the motherboard and will refuse to run on a different machine. It may not have drivers for any other type of machine. Sometimes what you get is a Ghost type disk image already set up with the drivers for that machine. Either way, useless for a different machine. *censored* microsoft Why blame them for protecting their interests ? ?kidding man. but I think what difference WOULD it make to microsoft whether its os was put on a gateway or hp or ..... machine. After all, if its not possible to install a microsoft os for dell ONTO an hp, then wouldnt it be as EASY to find someone or buy another HP, make a bootable disk and install that onto this HP?

If they sell 1 OS copy to Dell, and the Dell owner burns a disk and gives it to 5 of his pals who copy it and use it to install on their machines, instead of buying a new OS, it makes plenty difference.
okay

as was said...it's an OEM disk specific to that machine made/sold by Dell/Gateway/HP/etc.

cannot be used on another machine...deal with it...buy another disk and/or use the disk from the gateway and install your Wxp...

Solve : Transfer hard drives from pc to pc?

Answer»

Hi,
Is it possible to do the following:

take a hard drive with win xp already installed on one machine and then put it into another machine with a different motherboard

would i have to do a repair INSTALLATION?

check your specs first before you do anything and it depends on what type of computer/motherboard you have. If its going into a computer with the same hardware and specs then yes. But if its a faster or slower mother board or a different video card, then it may come up wrong. I've EXPERIMENTED with this before and put an old hard drive in an old computer and a couple of things happened, the video resoulution and color was jacked up and I couldn't fix it without re-installing the OS and a couple of times it has thrown a blue screen, and I've found out that if its not a blue screen for installing windows, setting or you dont do it, most of the time its BAD. So long story short, I wouldn't the motherboard is different different specs also, but wouldnt a recovery/repair install of windows work so rather than changing the hard drives i also should install xp on the new hard drive but only as a repair so i get to keep the filesyou may just have to create a back up, because a system restore wouldn't do anything on a new computer, because THERES nothing to restore. Everythings on the harddrive already. If you have Ghost, or could get you hand on a copy, that would be the easiest thing, and it would probably take you about 5-7 minutes or lessRepair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thoroughly paying special attention to the warnings and printing out a copy for reference...
Done properly the machine will now boot with your data and Apps intact...
Done improperly all your data will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP.thanks patio thats a handy guideThank Michael STEVENS....
Best of Luck.

Most manufacturers have a backup so you can reinstall to like it was from factory when you first got it. The backup is on your hard drive.

You need to read the owners manual to find out how to make a one time set of disks for future reinstall.
that is true Quote from: billrich on February 04, 2009, 03:19:35 PM
I don't have an answer. Just a few more questions.

1) XP has a backup program. Does the backup program save everthing we might need in the future? The backup program comes with XP pro but can be installed for XP Home?

2) Will Microsoft send us a copy to the XP OS installation disk?

3) Will the seller or the manufacturer send us a copy of the XP OS disk?

4) Can we make copies of the XP OS from hidden files on the hard Disk? ( or is this similar to a backup? )

5) If we have XP Home, may we upgrade to XP Pro? How much is the Disk?

Why are you hijacking pira's thread ? ?

Thanks for you help.plra:

You might consider Norton Ghost or something similar to make an image of EVERYTHING on the computer. You can then restore the image if necessary.
