Solve : Replaced HD - Recover from old HD?

Answer» HI got a question. Importing address book and/or files from another program on another drive, is fairly straight forward.

What I'm trying to do is import from program folder, or the storage location folder, from an older installation on a DIFFERENT (INSTALLED) physical hard disk that is no longer an active OS on the computer.

I can pull almost all files i need to off of that drive, and as far as the email, i can import the address book file successfully for both outlook express and OUTLook.

What i cannot seem to do successfully is to import any old mail. Does anyone know, if this cannot be done? Or if it can be done, how to do it? Again, importing, on the same pc, different drive, which is no longer an active system drive, nor is that an option.

that drive was failing-and-riddled-with-spyware-viruses and it had to be REMOVED. I have no money and not the time it takes to clean that out-it can take forever sometimes, especially when you have some nasty malicious stuff on it, like she did.

I put in a new drive/os, and really am just trying to bring back the little womans' old email files, maybe a few of mine.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I just FOUND this site. I am sure i will be back. on the system disk in question, xppro is running currently, with both Outlook2002 and OutlookExpress v.6.

On the former system drive, (which is a separate physical disk), when it was installed previously it was xphome, with the same mail programs installed.

again, the address book files i can import, but nothing else, so far.

Solve : cannot enable add-ons?

Answer»

I can only open IE without add-ons. When I GO under TOOLS to manage add-ons it will not work. All other options are in black and when you click on the they open but manage add-ons is not black and nothing happens when you click on it. What addons and where did you get them from ? ?Like, I have no home page. I cannot download ADOBE flash player, so I can't do a lot of things, I have no screensaver and there is no way to get one. Under the tabs there is a bar that says IE is currently RUNNING with add-ons disabled. When you click on it, it says about add-ons, when you go there it tells you how to enable them, but that won't work because you cannot click on enable add-ons.OK what version of Windows ? ?
Do you have a Windows CD ? ?
If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have the CD handy as it will ask for it.
When finished remove the CD and re-boot.

If this does not do it you may be looking at a repair install...

Solve : "not enough space" message?

Answer»

Good day, RUNNING a Dell Dimension with 2 hard drives. W2K on 20G "C", newly formatted 6G D drive. Am attempting to install W98SE on D.
On startup, went into setup, boot order floppy, CD, Hard drive. Changed D to PRIMARY drive for install. (Doing this so I can play original versions of Quake & Doom)
Boots FINE loading floppy files, reading CD. After scan for enough space to install, get message "not enough space". I used to KNOW a work-around for this, but have forgotten.
Any help?
TomWith Windows generally SPEAKING the older OS needs to be installed first for things to operate properly...
I'd suggest backing up what you need from the Win2K install and starting over.

Solve : Is WinXp Pro and Win 2000 Pro the same??

Answer»

Then I'll have a look at it then in my spare time, seeing my last water trick was so well documented.
Meanwhile Ive got a universe to look after and see if I can get a creative streak.you can do command line repairs, and yes you can replace "some" files. HOWEVER, some files you "cannot". Unfortunately in 10 years I've never seen any reference stating which can/or cannot, be REPLACED, although I've certainly done it enough times.

to clarify, if it were an open source application, everything you ask can be done.

Until, and including then, regular backups are the PRUDENT thing to do, especially when you COULD have countless user configurations LOST at any moment.

What Windows version? There is a new virus that I am researching that does this as well (new in english anyway), and I've helped a few people fix it. Tell me, do you have the FOLLOWING processes running? (check in task manager)

Any of:
quqnrtl.exe
ehjalrp.exe
Ibvtcgv
Rqgghnk

Also seen with:
winadr.exe
sourro.exe
intent.exe
winlogor.exe
winrar.exe
diskman32.exe

For now, until we get this sorted out, just RIGHT click C drive and click explore. That should do the trick for the moment. But tell me if you've got any of those processes running, especially any of the first 4.

Solve : Security - Restricted Sites?

Answer»

I have a Webpage in my Restricted Sites that I WOULD LIKE to remove. However, highlighting it and clicking "remove" does not work. The security setting is fixed on
High and I am unable to temporarily change it in order to remove the item.
Can anyone help please. We're missing a few clues here such as which browser, OS and whether you are running a firewall ETC....Sorry, but I CLICKED "send" too early! I have a Packard Bell, Windows XP Home,
Internet Explorer 7, Zone Alarm free edition. Any advice would be appreciated.Try removing it in Safemode with IE's security turned down...I tried your suggestion to start in Safe Mode and uninstal Zone Alarm, but no joy.
My Restricted Sites zone is on High (default) and has no alternative setting, but surely there is a way to remove a site as the zone has both "add" and "remove" buttons. Can the default setting be ALTERED by ticking or unticking a box in the Custom Level box? Ewart.I don't run Zone Alarm so i'm afraid i'll not be of much help...
Have you visited ZA's site or checked the Help files ? ?
Perhaps someone her that runs it will be along shortly...

Solve : $NTUninstaller Folders?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

Running Windows XP SP2 on my computer.

I have two questions:

1 ) What are the $NTUninstaller folders in my computer's Windows directory?
2 ) Can I delete them without affecting my system?

Thank you $NTUninstallers are the uninstallers to the MS Updates. Security patches and such. They can be removed. I would only recommend doing this if the machine has been running fine for a while after all the LATEST updates. Once they are removed there is no getting them back.

CCleaner has a setting that will remove them. Under the Advanced settings check the Hotfix Uninstallers and they will be removed. Thanks!Personally, I think it's best to backup these files to a CD before removing them. But so far, I've NEVER had any problems. Things can still go wrong, though. This is how i handle updates but as always Your MILEAGE May Vary:

I do not use Automatic Updates.
I wait at least 2 weeks after each Patch Tuesday before i install any patches.
In that time PERIOD i check the Forums i belong to for any complaints/issues with the latest patches.
After that i manually install only the ones that have no issues. I LEAVE them on my system for about another 2 weeks just to make sure.

At that point i move them to an $NTUninstall$ folder on a seperate partition. When that folder reaches CD size i burn them for backups and delete them...

What are you TRYING to do?i am trying to re partition my hard disks and install sp2...............I'm not clear on what you are trying...
If you partition your hard drive you will wipe all your data and EVERYTHING will have to be re-installed...

PARTITIONING is a process to set the size and # of partitions on a drive.
It has nothing to do with Service PACKS...

Solve : Computer Problem, Please HELP!?

Answer»

When I turn my computer a black screen comes up which says,

Loading PBR for descriptor 2...done.

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del is looks as if it's going to load back up but then this screen just comes right back up. I'd really appreciate some help as I have no idea what is going on. Thanks. It may not be proprerly reading your harddrive.http://discussions.virtualdr.com/archive/index.php/t-195674.html

<<<"First, make sure that all connections are secure, and reseat the RAM.

If no LUCK and it USES Windows XP, then press the F8 KEY during startup, select Safe mode from the menu using the arrow keys, and press Enter.
If it starts in Safe mode, then do a clean boot to find the cause:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310353

If it does not start in Safe mode, then restart, press the F8 key during startup, and select 'Last Known Good Configuration'.

If still no luck, then press the F2 key during startup to get into Setup(try the Del key if F2 does not work), and make sure the CD drive is configured to boot ahead of the HD.
Then, insert the Windows(or Recovery) CD, restart, and follow the steps shown here to access the Recovery Console, and do a FIXBOOT(writes a new partition table to the HD)-> http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/

If that does not fix things, then do a FIXMBR(repairs the HD's Master Boot Record) using the same above procedure for a FIXBOOT, except substitute FIXMBR.

If still no luck, then you may have to do a repair install as described in the above link(Follow the steps for having an OEM version of XP).

If no good, then do a FRESH install of XP(You will lose all data, restore points, and updates).

If there are problems doing that, then either the HD or RAM may be bad.">>>

Thanks for the help.see if you can borrow a xp cd ....and if that's not an option?Did you try clearing the CMOS?I'm not sure what you mean by "removing the battery on the board" I don't assume you mean the charging battery, can you dumb it down for me lol, thanksOn the board there is a battery the size of a dime,With the power off remove the battery for appx 20 min & re install.Re boot the computer. You can google [clear cmos] or replace cmos battery]this might solve your PBLM So I removed the battery and left it over night, plugged it all back in and it GOES back to the same screen as stated before. Any other advise?Reseat all cables to the hard drive/drives and re-boot...
Enter the BIOS and see if the hard drive is being recognised.

As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions...How do I reset all cables to the hard drive? thanks for the helpReseat...remove them one by one and plug them back in firmly.

Solve : Clipboard Virus?

Answer»

Do any viruses exist which could email the contents of your CLIPBOARD to ONE of your contacts or add them to an already part-written of draft message?Maybe, but I doubt it.

It would seem REALLY pointless to code such a mal-ware.It's always possible, but as Sid STATED, what would the Hacker/Author gain out of emailing your clipboard contents to one of your contacts? Unless they were a friend of yours trying to 'get back at you' for something, it would be utterly pointless and unlikely.A KEYLOGGER can do this...what type of problems are you having ? ?You guys don't seem to realize that most MALWARE is pointless...

Solve : Windows XP Icon backgrounds?

Answer»

4 machines in this house, all running XP or XP Pro. Two show the desktop icons with text in opaque background and two show the text in a blue background - inverse video

How do you change this ?

Easy PROBABLY when u know how - but I'll bet it's hidden in some HELP file !!!Change the background color. No offence to anyone - but I must be having a blonde moment.

Where do you change the setting ?

Right click any empty spot on the desktop and select PROPERTIES...Yes - done all that - get the options for desktop and screensavers etc. Selected the Windows Classic and then you get additional options for things LIKE Icons, icon spacing etc.

I am being really dumb here - but cannot find the setting that makes the text under icons appear in inverse video so I get the blue box and reverse text !!

Oh - I need another glass of WINE or somethingBackground tab.ajpearson, I believe this is what you're looking for...

Solve : Minimal functionality remaining in computer.?

Answer»

Yes - right now, this *should* go into the DOS section, but first, let me explain a BIT

This computer is over 10 years old now, and has held on quite well, despite technological advances. However, recently, I've stopped using it - but apparently there are some games that don't work on WinXP no matter what I try, so I wanted to install WIN95 or 98 (or even preferably both!) on this old Gateway computer. However, it recently is quite prone to random freezes that don't unfreeze. Slowly, I've been getting files off/deleting the files - however, recently it went into some sort of ultra-error (OH finally now we're getting to the useful information). Windows XP won't start at all, the only thing that remotely works right now is using a Gateway backup CD that lets me use MS-DOS.

I've got two working hard-drives (Although one can question whether or not they're actually working -_-), D: and E:, apparently, because typing anything other than those two drives through MS DOS (I have some spare KNOWLEDGE on the subject) gives an "Invalid Drive Specification"

Right now, I just need to find a way to either

a) start windows (typing in "win" on either D: or E: does not work)
b) Restore to an earlier point
c) install a new version of windows without having to boot up. (If this case is preferable, a link to a burnable win98/95 installation CD would be nice...because I don't have one. Else this would have been done a long time ago.)

The reason why I put it here rather than in DOS section was that it would be more applicable here in the future rather than now.

Thanks in advance [and I'll actually check up on the topic.]

If you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask.

Edit: I'd like to get rid of all the data off the harddrives before installing a new version of windows, as it may save this used data right now as unaccessable space. And I'd like to keep my 60GBs You will need to purchase a restore disk.

Here is a good guide.-->Restore Thanks ^_^

I'll be sure to check it out when I get home TODAY. Wow, you're running Win XP on a 10 year old computer? I'm surprised it even runs, let alone freezes.

... so I wanted to install Win95 or 98 (or even preferably both!) on this old Gateway computer.
Do you a CD for either or both Win 95/98?
No, I don't. I really wish I did.

I'd like to get rid of all the data off the harddrives before installing a new version of windows, as it may save this used data right now as unaccessable space. And I'd like to keep my 60GBs
You could temporarily install those hard drives as slave drive in another computer and get the data you want.
I've already gotten all the data I want off those hard drives, used my iPod as a middleman/transfer device.

I just need to kill, and restart

I do own a "Gateway Restoration Disk". All it does, though, is labeled in the OP. However, it does 'start up' in Win98. Just in DOS mode. (Off of the CD, rather than hard-drive)

I really don't have much knowledge of MS-DOS, but any related commands to wiping data would be helpful.

Also, thanks to everybody for their continued help

Just a quick bump, I left for a 5 day trip recently and just got back If you are booting from a CD

the drive letter allocations are

A: Floppy
B: Floppy
C: CD-ROM
D: HD1
E: HD2

If the previous Win98 installation is corrupted, you need to reinstall. Providing a link to a downloadable Win98 or 95 install disk would be piracy. You can get legal ones on Ebay.

Hm, my last question and when it's answered, I'll probably leave you guys alone

If I insert an install disc, would it attempt to install windows - and if so, what would happen to the current data on there?Quote from: mattz1010 on September 29, 2007, 01:21:42 AM
If I insert an install disc, would it attempt to install windows - and if so, what would happen to the current data on there?

If you insert a Windows CD-ROM into the tray of the CD drive of a computer, it won't do anything straight away. It'll just sit there doing nothing.

To get it to install Windows on the computer you have to take certain deliberate steps, and during that process you get to choose whether to keep or lose any data that already exists.

Alright, so what would I have to do?What is the restore disk you have? If it is a Gateway restore
disk of windows 98.....I believe you will need a floppy boot disk
to do fdisk and partition your hard drive, then start the install.

Solve : Can't install printer?

Answer»
Hi,

I am attempting to install an HP Laserjet 1320 pcl 6 printer, connecting to the pc using a USB cable, the PC is running Windows XP.

When I launch the installation program from the CD and begin the driver installation, I get a Windows error message which reads:

Cannot Install this Hardware
There was a PROBLEM installing this hardware:
hp LaserJet 1320 PCL 6
An error occurred during the installation of this device
The file or DIRECTORY is corrupted and unreadable

I get the same error message when I use the drivers downloaded from the HP website.
I have deleted the printer from Device Manager, but when reinstalling it, I get the same error.

If I connect the PC to ANOTHER printer on our network (another HP 1320) and install it as a network printer, then the installation appears fine. But when trying to print, I get an error message which states:

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup. Try one or more of the following:
*Check the printer by printing a test page from windows
*Make sure the printer is TURNED on and online
*Reinstall the printer driver

Any ideas?

thanks, NickFirst remove any HP software under Add/Remove programs.
Then remove the printer in Device Manager.
Check the Startup folder and remove any HP references.
Re-boot and re-check all these places to make sure HP no longer is listed.

If so power down and unplug the printer.
Leave it UNPLUGGED and re-boot and then put in the HP software CD and run the install program...it will tell you when to plug the printer in...
Hopefully this should work.
Most USB printers should NOT be plugged in while installing them until prompted.I did the following:

Removed the printer from Add/Remove programs
Deleted it from Device Manager
Renamed HP folder in C:\Program Files
Disconnected the printer

I then rebooted, and tried to re-install, bit still have the same problem. Windows detects the printer, begins installing it, the brings up the error message. I have attached an image of the error.

[getting disk space - attachment deleted by admin]Try again. But this time follow Patio's directions.double check the usb of the printer.it should not be connected until the software is installed.Quote from: 2k_dummy on November 05, 2007, 04:31:32 AM
Try again. But this time follow Patio's directions.

I have done this, but still have the same problem.

I know how to install a printer (and remove one), we have about 40 of these HP 1320's on our network, all the same make & model, and I've never had this error message before
go to www.download.com register then download the driver from there!I have discovered that I can install other models of printer, it is only the HP 1320 that causes this error.

Solve : Can't populate Software List?!??

Answer»

I have an almost 11-month old Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP, SP2. I have been using an optical cordless mouse (with full driver installation done) but have accidently removed the USB connection few days ago. After i've plugged it back immediately, the NOTEBOOK keeps claiming that the hardware has not been installed properly. As such, I am unable to use the mouse since.

More trouble came when I've decided to check out the control panel's software list, just to be sure that my installation is still there. The screen keeps getting stuck with the population in PROGRESS message and it doesn't GET any further no matter how long i've tried to wait. Not sure if i have done anything wrong, being a computer newbie...

I'm currently using Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007. Hope someone can help me soon, thanks alot!!! Quote

accidently removed the USB connection few days ago
How?

Did you try System Restore?Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I've tried System Restore to the point in time before the incident, unfortunately that does not help.

I've accidently removed the connection (plug) of my optical mouse from the USB port when I was trying to plug in my printer. As I have limited USB ports, I'll have to exchange equipments sometimes. For example, I would usually not connect my printer to the notebook unless I NEED to print something. Normally I would have left the USB plug to the optical mouse alone since I need a mouse when I'm using the notebook, but for this particular time, I've plugged out the wrong connection... In most cases simply disconnecting USB device shouldn't CAUSE a problem, but sometimes it does, if you don't use "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from your taskbar. I assume, it may be a problem with a device like mouse, because Windows constantly interacts with mouse, and unless you use "Safely Remove Hardware", Windows is not aware, that you're about to disconnect your mouse.
What you may try is to go to Device Manager, uninstall your mouse, restart your laptop, and hopefully Windows will find it again.

As for your Add/Remove problem, you may try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329891&Product=win2000
It's listed as for Windows 2000, but all three mentioned files are the same in XP, so it should work.
If it doesn't, restart your laptop in Safe Mode, and see if your Add/Remove list will populate there. Thanks again for your reply. I've uninstalled my mouse from Device Manager and reinstalled it again, now it works perfectly like before! Many, many thanks!!!

As for the populating the software list, I've got it done via the Safe Mode method. Now it's alright, except that the populating time takes up to 10 or 15 minutes. Do you think it is normal to take so long to populate the list?No that is not normal.
From Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools run disk clean.
Then go to Start/Run and run ckkdsk /r...let it run to completion.
Then from the first menu i mentioned run Disk Defrag.
Shut down and re-boot and see if there is any improvement...
If not then run all your protection program scans, let them fix what they find and post back with a list of what you ran.
It's alot i know but it will eliminate some of the possibilities...I was busy, fixing my own machine, but I'm glad, at least your mouse problem is fixed. Thanks for all the help, now the list can be populated within 2 minutes! It's really amazing that i can overlook even such simple steps to resolve the problem... Big thanks to all!!! 2 minute is still a long time, unless you have there quiet a bit of a list.
Better, then 10 minutes, though

It is working but not to it's full capability and the program is asking me to reinstall it so it may work better. When I go to add or remove programs it goes to my documents and looks for the INSTALL.LOG and it can't find it I want to completely remove this program but I don't know no other way. If someone knows another way please tell me.

Thank you

I can't find anyway I just don't know any other way to delete this program completely I really want to start using this program but I need to delete it and I just don't know how.

Please help me soon I have been STRUGGLING to delete for two day already and this is my third day still struggling to delete it. Try reinstalling the program without deleting the other one, it may give you the option to repair or uninstall the old one from there. If not, try just manually deleting the folder it was installed into, typically somewhere in Program Files.I have tried to reinstall like you said like three different times already but that wouldn't work for me it just made my computer freeze, but I'm willing to do the program files thing you mentioned but I have never done that before so can you please explain to me how I would really appreciate it I just want to completely take it off the computer then just install it like it had never been on my computer before Open Windows Explorer. In C:\Program Files, look for folder containing word "Magix". Delete whole folder.
After that DOWNLOAD, and run CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
to remove any leftovers.
Reinstall your program.

Solve : Virus "Protection" deleted essential files...?

Answer»

First of all let me say that i am the defination of layman. No, actually, that might be giving myself too much credit...

I have a HP Pavillion a1220n Using Windows XP Home (before) and now crappy version of Windows XP Pro (riddled with problems)

I DISCOVERED I had a virus yesterday (I kept getting promted about it) and so I ran a virus check. I didn't know it but my Mcafee subscription was over by about 2 years so i need new software.

I downloaded this: http://www.download.com/PC-Tools-AntiVirus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10742903.html

Of course I ran it and it was stuck at around 52% complete for about 2 hours so I stopped the scan and then my computer crashed.

When I restarted I was prompted to a login screen. I had never logged in on my computer before. I had no idea what my password was so i just hit "enter". That seemed to work but as soon as windows would start up it would shut down again ad infinitum.

A buddy of mine gave me his XP Pro CD and so I can use the internet and everything (after INSTALLING XP Pro) but my sound does not work now. I updated all the drivers, the speakers and cables and mixer works. I see all the audio stuff in the Devices thing but what's funny is that on my keyboard there is a volume control which doesn't work anymore and in my start -> accessories -> entertainment -> there is nothing (no volume control, nothing)

Ga! Can anyone help me? I'm very hopelessly confused and I am deploying in 6 days and need to have this all worked out so my wife can use the computer before I leave.

Thanks.First of all, when you switched from Home to Pro, was it a clean install, or just over the top?I'm not terribly sure what that means. Actually a few times when I installed XP Pro it didn't work correctly so now I have a huge list of OS's to choose from on my boot screen.

I e-mailed HP. Is there any hope of them sending me a new OS CD? WE've moved a few times since I bought this PC and I have lost the disk.Quote

Actually a few times when I installed XP Pro it didn't work correctly so now I have a huge list of OS's to choose from on my boot screen.
This is most likely your problem.
When you do clean install, having Windows XP CD, it'll ask you, if you want to delete existing partitions(YES), create a new partition(YES), FORMAT new partition(YES), and then you install Windows. This way, you MAKE sure, everything is wiped off, and you start clean.

Quote
I e-mailed HP. Is there any hope of them sending me a new OS CD?
You should call them, instead of emailing them. I doubt, they'll send you OS CD, but for sure, they'll ship you Recovery CD, which will return your computer to the initial state. They'll most likely charge you for it, though.

Could someone tell me what system error code 5 is and what might be the cause of it and if there is any side effects? Are you the administrator?Yes sir I amBoot into safemode by tapping F8 repeatedly on startup and before you see the Windows logo.

To fix this, click Update Driver to update the driver for this device.

Code 5: Access Denied, not Code 5: The driver for this device requested a resource that Windows does not know how to handle.Sorry for the lack of updates.

I don't have any anti-virus or scans installed at the moment.

I did the spam F8 -> Boot into safe mode -> uninstalled the driver with yellow !(Raid SiS? I don't know what the *censored* that is, but I don't use it ANYWAY..?), and that stopped the POPPING up of system error code 5 windows.

I do get the computer telling me that "there's a new hardware," but it disappears about 2 minutes after booting... So it's not much trouble(should I just reinstall the Raid? Anyone knows what this is -_-?)Well patio, you were right.

Surmise, right click on the driver with the yellow !, click Properties, Driver tab, and click on Update Driver. The RAID Sis driver is being used if you have a SATA hard drive in that machine...it's usually found on the MBoard driver CD that shipped with the machine.

Solve : XP Boot Issues NEED BIG HELP PLEASE HELP?

Answer»

Hey guys and galls,

My computer crashed because I was pushing it a little to hard so I did a hard shut-down. When I tried to REBOOT it found XP and loaded through the XP splash screen and i got the blue screen of death telling me it could not read/write/access/ or FIND a registry key located in "system/system32/windows' or something like that (it didn't occur to write it down exactly, yes i know stupid) anyway I thought ok. I then tried to boot into last known good config and safe mode as well as another just normal boot and this time after the XP splash screen the screen just went black and the system restarted, and in safe mode with the last line saying"......../windows/system32/drivers/Mup.sys" it failed and went to a black screen and restarted. I then booted into recovery counsel and ran chkdsk and it said it found one or more errors, I then ran an chkdsk c: /r which is the HP version of chkdsk c:/f . After it finished fixing I tried to boot again and same old same old. It get through the splash screen and then goes to black and restarts.

This si the computer I use every day and need as much help as I can get to get it back up and running. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks for the help.
Okay, two things..

First explain to us exactly what you meant by "pushing it a little too hard." What'd you do that made you decide rebooting was the coolest thing to do?

Second, in all probability you have erased block 0 (or part of it anyway) of your machine's BAM. What happens when you load the last Restore file?

I was running a video editing program and it was rendering a file (major CPU usage) and then another task started in the backround and maxed out my CPU "freezing" my computer. This has happened before and I have let it sit there for hours in the past and the only way to fix it is a hard shutdown.

I'm not to sure what you are saying what is "bam", what is "block 0", and what "restore file"

ThanksTry booting back into the Recovery Console and type these 2 commands:
fixboot
fixmbr

Do them one at a time...should I use any modifiers and I don't think it is a boot record issue because the computer boots its when it loads the OS it fails.

Right now I am looking at this article on tec-net:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307545

I think this may solve the issue because I ORIGINALLY had an issue on boot with the blue screen of death telling me it couldn't access, modify, read, or Waite to a registry key as I said before.

What is your advice on going through with this?If your problem matches exactly what that page describes, and I mean not just sounds a bit like it, then I would follow the procedures Microsoft has outlined there.

But do pay particular attention to this section from that page:
Quote
This article describes how to recover a Windows XP system that does not start because of corruption in the registry. This procedure does not guarantee full recovery of the system to a previous state; however, you should be able to recover data when you use this procedure.

Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.

What kind of XP install are you using?Im using XP Media Center 200"?" I think 2 or 3. It is an oem install, BUT when recovery consoule starts it prompts me for administrative password I just leave it blank and hit enter sience the defult one for an HP is nothing. Is this the same thing as they say in the artical? If this is the OEM install that came with your HP computer, that's exactly what they're talking about. Check HP's website or the computer's documentation or contact their support DEPARTMENT for the best way to proceed with restoring the registry. What does this mean exactly?

I know the admin password to recovery consul if that is what they are asking, but I really don't want to call HP because it cost me $50 bucks just to get through to someone who may be able to help and then there are no grantees.

you will have to activate your copy of windows but if you do it on the phone and the automated responses request you talk to an operator just explain to them what happened and they should give you the activation code no worries

Solve : virtual pc 2007?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm sure the answer is already on here somewhere but I've had a good look and can't find it.

I am currently doing a course for an MCDBA (gulp!), as part of the course I have to do the ComptiA+ and I am looking to sit the first exam for this in a few weeks.

I am currently running XP PRO, VERSION 2002, SP2 on a ATHALON XP 2200+ 1.8GHz AND 768MB RAM.

I need to learn a bit about windows 95, 98, ME and 2000 and to this end I have installed virtual pc 2007, I have selected the operating system(s) I WANT and created a virtual HARD drive (vhd). I start virtual pc and select the operating system and start it, a window opens with a black background and performs what 'looks' like a post and then comes up with:

"Argon PXE boot agent v2.00 (BIOS Integrated)
(C) COPYRIGHT 2004 blah blah blah..."

CLIENT MAC ADDR ** ** ** ** ** ** ** GUID: ******-******-*****-***
DHCP....\

Then it comes up with

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device"

So what am I doing wrong? The only thing I can think of is that VPC requires L2cache to run and I don't know if I have that or how to check if I have got it.

This course is costing me £4,500 or approx $9,000 so it's really important to me that I learn as much as possible.

Thanx for your help
Have you installed the windows OS you want on the virtual machine? Virtual PC doesn't come with any operating SYSTEMS, you have to install them like on a real computer. Well don't I look like a numpty lol

Thought it was all included in VPC i.e. VIRTUAL and that I didn't have to install it i.e. ACTUALL

Thanx tho'

ps. Do MS do trial OS's for free?No I don't believe they do... except for a 120 day trial of Windows XP 64 bit.

Solve : Odd Computer Problem... You Think You Can Help??

Answer»

Okay, my friend has a computer problem and I can't figure out how to fix it, neither can he. I'll try to explain it:

Okay so, his STORY was that his brother was using the computer and wanted to run a game, Fable: The Lost Chapters. It asked him what he wanted to open it with (I HOPE you know what I mean), and he chose the game itself. I guess he accidentally chose the OPTION of using that game to open all other .exe files. The option said "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" (which was a .exe).

That made ALL .exe change so that it would execute Fable:The Lost Chapters when opened. He couldn't fix it.

I imagine it was a virus or trojan since it asked how he wanted to open a .exe.

If anyone understood, do you have a solution other than Redoing Windows?

Ask questions because it was hard to explain.

Thanks! There's a utility in Windows that shows you what extensions are associated with what. Open that up and DIG around in there for a little while to see if you can find out anything. If you let us know what version of Windows he's using we could point you towards that utility.Quote from: Anodoin on November 17, 2007, 09:50:25 PM

Forgot to say, it's Windows XP.

And, while I was at his house trying to crack the case, I saw that some files had extensions called .lnk. According to Google, that's the extension for Short-Cuts.

Still, I don't know what to do.Get the "EXE File Association Fix" from here.
Unzip the file and run it.

Solve : Computer won't boot, any ideas??

Answer»

Can anyone help? I have Windows XP and when I went to get on my computer this week, it will not boot up. There is a black screen with a bunch of error messages. I pressed F8 to get to the menu to choose Safe Mode. When I choose that, it tries to boot up but TAKES me directly back to that black screen. No matter which option I choose, I can't get my computer to load anything. Is it time to have someone take a look at it or is there something else I can do?

It gave me the option of fixing the hard drive back to it's original state from the FACTORY but that means I will lose all of my family photographs stored on the computer.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!Get a MacHow about you try adding constructive INPUT to a thread next time MacPC? Or is that impossible on a Mac?

We will need more info in order to help you nerva.
Did anything happen around the time this problem started? Did you for example add or remove any software, have you heard any strange noises coming from the PC, etc.
We will need to know exactly what error messages you're seeing as well.
Also knowing the specifications for the computer will be helpful or at least a brand name and model number.
Thanks, I was hoping someone would have some helpful input.

No new software was added/removed prior to this happening. I did leave it on overnight and our power may have flickered for a second because one of our clocks was flashing the next morning. Other than that, I can't think of anything out of the ordinary.

I am at work at the moment. When I get home this evening, I will write down the error I'm getting and LOG on tomorrow morning to let you know.

Thanks!!!! Quote from: nerva on December 20, 2007, 10:25:23 AM

I think this might be crucial, but lets see what those error messages say before making any conclusions.Okay, took a look at computer last night. When the black screen comes up, it's the error message "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0) partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\______.sys. The blank has different named extensions and this is listed all the way down the screen.

It keeps going back to the safe mode menu but when I choose a safe mode or back to last known configuration, it loops me back to the black screen with the error messages.

Under the PC Recovery menu, I tried to do a hard drive test and it failed. Error code was HD521-2W

I've got an HP Pavilion a1600n
Those are not error messages...safemode is trying to load.
Be patient....grab a beer or coffee. But it won't load. It tries but goes back to the safe mode menu. Every time you select it, it will try and go back through the loop over and over again.Quote from: nerva on December 21, 2007, 07:58:20 AM

It appears your hard drive is failing. It will need to be repaired or replaced. This would also explain why windows wont load. It is possible it was damaged by the power OUTAGE but it could just be a coincidence. How old is the hard drive? It's only a year oldYeah a hard drive shouldn't under normal circumstances fail after only a year but it do happen. It may also have been hit by a power spike on the night of the power outage. Is the computer still under warranty? If not you may have a 3 year warranty on the hard drive it self depending on the manufacturer and model.

Solve : XP clean install will not proceed beyon License Agreement when hitting F-8?

Answer»

My problem with MSInstaller to this point has remained unsolvable so I decided to simply do a clean Install of XP.
Now I have a NEW problem!
Once I am in the License Agreement screen F-8 will not cause the program to proceed. The page up and page down keys work fine, the escape KEY takes me out of the program. I attempted a second go at it with the same RESULTS. Repeated F-8 key strokes did nothing.
I am dangerously close to breaking out the old shotgun and doing this THING in.
Someone please help SAVE my computer from a violent end!
Thanks
Old BearIf your keyboard is USB try it with a PS2 style keyboard.
Do NOT remove replace the keyboard while the POWER is on...Does the computer have a modem installed? Mine did that when I reformatted and installed windows and I had removed the 56k modem that was in there and that was the problem. Once I put that back in, it finished just fine.

Solve : pc wont respond?

Answer»

my sisters pc wont respond, its an HP desk top pc. her tower is blinking a BLUE light, nothing plugged into the tower will work, and the screen has a orange light. the screen is black. she doesnt hear any noise COMMING from her tower, COULD it be her fan? she said that before this it would shut off unexpectdly.I'd guess at the Power Supply Unit (PSU).

Take the case off and find out the rating of the PSU, example 350W.

Get a PSU that is of equal or higher Wattage, with the correct connections (DOUBLE check with the mobo manufactures website, or LOOK in the mobo handbook).

Also, while you've got the case open, get a can of compressed air, and blow all the dust out of the machine...probably best to do this outside!

Solve : An unstoppable crash??

Answer»

I have gotten extremely annoyed of this... I have tried just about EVERYTHING the net has to provide... and yet no hope... I have spent hours on trying to fix this computer...

The problem? It freezes up, either while starting up, in windows, or what ever. It doesn't matter it happens everywhere...

The offender? agp440.sys... First I noticed it... I repaired windows with a "chkdsk /r /P" and... it WORKED... for about 5 minutes... so I tried it yet again.. and again... yet again no prevail... now I getting very frustrated... I go on-line and follow Microsoft's instructions to DISABLE it... still does not work.

I have renamed the file... I have deleted it. heck I've even formatted 3 different times now... still nothing... I go on-line again... now I find out it's an ATI error... so I switch my 256MB ATI card for a 32MB nVidia card... Well everything still seems to be running... but only after another 5 minutes it crashes again... why? agp440.sys

now I learn that it is something with the motherboard. and if I update the bios thing everything will be fine... well I flashed it, and it's like it didn't even help it one least bit because it still crashes...

I'm pulling hair out on this... I really need help... anyone have a fix for this? cause... everything I've tried has failed... PLEASE help... ThanksMaybe time to Go here>>

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307654Is there a way to do this without getting into windows... Because I can't really do that... and it's getting worse...

Different solutions, worked for different people, so you'll have to play around.
Let us know, what you tried.Don't know what the problem is. All I can do is provide a link of others discussing the problem and how some of them resolved it.
