Solve : Microsoft Outlook "enter Network Password" box keeps popping up?

Answer»

Hello, I NEED some help. I cannot send or rec e-mail. When I open OUTLOOK, a box pops up that is already populated with my info. It says "enter network password" It has my cable provided in the server box then a user name box is next with my user name already in it, then the password box is next and already populated. I click OK and it GOES away but comes right back. I KNOW I have e-mail in there because I can check them remotely. I need some help and dont know where to turn. I did search this subject but I could not find any thing like this or how t0 fix it. ThanksWelcome aboard...
Try here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA101513541033.aspxThanks for the website, but I followed the instructions and my Outlook does not have the setting that it is asking for in the tools menu. I bought this computer in 2001 it has XP home office. The website you gave me asks for this in order. Tools-Acct settings-E-mail-ISP-Change_logon info-password. I do not have a acct settings tab to click on. HELP! Try here, then:
http://www.newmediamusings.com/blog/2003/05/solution_to_ent.htmlThanks again for the website, before I do this, I am not running Outlook Express, just Outlook. Does this matter in your opinion? You have been a great help.

The guy says, that particular solution was designed for Outlook Express, but it worked for his Outlook, so I guess, it's worth to try.
You don't RISK anything, if you follow the advice given there about backing up your registry.

Solve : MULTIBOOT WIN XP?

Answer»

I have two hdds on my Dell Dimension 4600 computer. The new one is 300GB with 4 partitions. I am constantly CONCERNED about the C drive going out because, like me, it isn't getting any younger. I had the idea of putting another copy of Windows XP or perhaps Vista on the larger hard drive and then booting to it in case something happened to my older drive and keeping duel file copies on both drives. It would be like having two computers with the same files. My computer is working great since I INSTALLED a gig of ram so I am hesitant to putz around with it. What is your RECOMMENDATION for a backup system that doesn't stop dead in the water if your OS drive goes out. I have tried making a bootable CD but can't for some reason so that is out. Am I nuts for having the duel OS drives or is this something to CONSIDER. Also, Can I use the same Win XP on both drives since they are on the same computer without copyright problems. Thanks FOLKS for the help

Solve : Playing DVD movies?

Answer»

Hi,
I have DVD ROM on my PC which uses OS Win98se. What other hardware or software do I need in order to pllay DVD movies on it? If software is needed, is there such software available in the internet?

Bill.No extra hardware is needed (as long as the graphics card is good enough), only software. VLC should work on windows 98. Give it a shot.

http://www.videolan.org

That can play DVD's.

-StephenDefinitely I agree with phoeniz910. Thank you guys.
I installed VLC to my Win98se, I had the following results:
While plalying video files, there was no sound; and
the program could not play DVD from DVD ROM Drive.

I could have ask for help from the program publisher, but they do not support unregistered users.

Can you figure out what I am missing?SILLY question, but do you have speakers and sound card? These are required to play audio (usually inbuilt sound card is sufficient). You may also need to download some video/DVD CODECS to be able to play them properly

-StephenStart with basic Win 98 codecs:

Solve : Windows stalling?

Answer»

I have an HP Desktop w/ AMD 3800+ CPU, 3 Gb of RAM, running an Asus EN8600 Silent Video card, on XP.
I have noticed that when I click an application, it take about a second or two for the machine to respond, and it use to not do that. I've looked at my system info, and the ram is there, and everything reports that it is working properly, but it seems quirky at times. Also, Firefox is now putting up ads on my windows and that has never happened.
Any ideas??When's the last time you ran diskclean, chkdsk and defrag ? ?Also check with blackviper and be sure you are only running processes your machine really needs to have running..
Too many startups go in here, as well. How old is the computer? Some times it is great just to backup all your data and start from scratch. I have a a 5 year old computer that as I use as my primary rig, but a old 8 year old dell a D6400 with half the specs run faster than it does because I just wiped it and reloaded all my apps and docs. Another nice thing about doing this is you only install the apps you actually use and you drop all the useless one you never use and slow down your system. Quote

Also, Firefox is now putting up ads on my windows
Assuming, you have pop-up blocker on, you may have some infection.Meanwhile he has been abducted by ALIENS...yeh i concur with the virus malware idea it may seem that a key recorder is present or SOMETHING more sinister that is checking what you do before the process is allowed to continue the problems associated with this type of attack is home page hijacking, pop ups(particularly porn) and when you use a search engine only being sent to pages that sell stuff, you may have to get PROFESSIONAL help for this problem or back up only your word files and pics to disc and reinstall xp

Solve : Stuttering sounds from speakers and just a laggy feel?

Answer»

Hi, I've encountered a really strange prob with my comp and not sure what is wrong. It is something that suddenly started, I didn't add any new hardware or software. My computer is a Dell DIMENSION 4550 with a Pentium 4 and 1 Gig of RAM. I have a Sound Blaster Live! sound card.

My problem that started is the sound and video get "laggy". It "hiccups" now and then, and WHENEVER its loading, the sound/music will play faster. I hear some staticy noises during the hiccups and the sounds will only play faster during those hiccups, then return to normal. It does this when I play songs from the hard drive, play games, or play videos on Youtube.

Another thing is when it gets worse, the videos will fully load from youtube, yet it will only play about 2 seconds and just stop, then I move the slider forward and it will play for the 2 seconds again. And when it is even worse (more HEATED possibly?) I won't even get any sound at all.

I've ran McAfee, SPYBOT Search and Destroy, AdAware, Stinger, and Windows Defender and they all came up totally clean.

Since its a problem that recently just developed, I'm wondering if I'm having a hardware piece go bad. I never had these problems before. I would think it was the sound card GOING bad, but why would video lag as well if it was? Could it be the Hard Drive or motherboard or CPU? Any ideas on how to diagnose it? I'm not getting any error messages at all.

Please help if you can, let me know if you need any more info that I missed.

Solve : Windows 2K Install Problem?

Answer»

I get this THING while I'm surfing that says Please wait while WINDOWS configures Microsoft Office 2000 Small Bussiness. Then it ASK for the disk. I put in win 2k and browser for the file called data1.msi. Any clue what this is?When it asks for the disc, are you PUTTING in the Office disc, or the Windows disc?

My recommendation is that you let the installer finish, or, reinstall Microsoft Office. This usually happens when a feature is changed in the program, and it needs to get the data again. I was thinking that is was a windows PROBLEM. I'll try thatIf I recall correctly that's the data file to install add-on's not originally installed with Office 2000 You'll need to use the Office 2000 CD and not the Win 2k CD.

Solve : XP Pro SP2 takes an absolute AGE to shutdown properly.?

Answer»

Anyone know what might be causing this?

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 atm, so it's not a dire thing, but it's rather annoying and putting me off trying a few things in it.

Ubuntu manages to shut down rather rapidly, so I'm guessing it's liable to be something definitely related to XP.

It's XP Pro SP2, and I've got up-to-date AVG on it, ALTHOUGH I don't think I've done a scan in awhile. Like I say, I don't really need to use it, but it'd be nice to "fix" it.

Solve : pc information.....?

Answer»

i wonder is it possible for me to GET computer information like:

1- how old my computer.(when the motherboard d.o.b )

2- how old my hard disk drive.

3-how old my RAM.

4-processor age.

and other details that may help me...

because currently i want to buy secondhand computer, just wondering their expired date...I'm totally cannot trust salesman...

please don't hesitate share ur knowledge with me....

You could check the date of the BIOS but this can also be changed: something like rolling back the odometer. You could also google the type of CPU. This could possibly give you a ball-park figure. The OS MIGHT also give you a clue but this could also have up-dated.So this is a PC you can't download things on, then?

Best to Google the part numbers of things then really...ask him/her to open the case, and jot down all the details and digits you can. This can't be done that i know of...

If this involves buying a second hand machine the best you can do is RESEARCH the components for their market life-span...IE: The CPU will have been available from:____to:
MBoard
Vid card

Hard drives have much longer spans so don't waste time on them.

Of course even with the above supplied info you still have no idea how many miles are on it or what it was used for.

Best thing to do would be to post the complete specs and the asking price and we can advise further...IF YOUR POTENTIAL SALESMAN CAN CONNECT IT TO THE WEB AT HIS PLACE OF BUSINESS...........DOWNLOAD BELARC ADVISOR AND IT WILL SCAN THE SYSTEM AND GIVE YOU ALL OF THE STATS AND SOFTWARE LOGISTICS, INCLUDING INSTALLATION KEY CODES; AND DO ALL OF THIS WITHIN A COUPLE OF MINUTES. IF YOUR SALESMAN IS "UP TO PAR" HE OR SHE WILL NOT MIND DOING THIS. AFTER ALL IT WILL HELP MAKE THE SALE, IF THEY ARE LEGIT.............INCIDENTLY, BELARC ADVISOR IS FREE DOWNLOAD BY THE WAY, IF THE USED SYSTEM IS OVER A COUPLE OF HUNDRED BUCKS, IT'S USUALLY NOT WORTH IT ( I SELL A NEW SYSTEM WITH AMD OR INTEL / 80GB HDD / 1GB MEMORY WITHOUT A MONITOR FOR JUST UNDER $350 ----INCLUDING ONE YEAR PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY) OF COURSE THIS IS NOT A "GAMER" BUT IT WILL PERFORM MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR 95% OF WHAT THE AVERAGE USER WILL EVER NEED. REMEMBER A CHEVY WILL TAKE YOU TO WORK, JUST LIKE A LEXUS WILL...AND YOU WILL FEEL BETTER ABOUT WHAT YOU PAID FOR THE CHEVY i strongly suggest a new keyboard gator, as the one you are currently using appears to have a malfunctioning caps-lock key.Quote from: homer on December 28, 2007, 02:43:36 AM

Cap locks, huh ? I thought we were supposed to quit ACTING like that in the second grade. It's a shot in the dark, but you might try looking at the individual pieces if it's a custom built machine. Some hard drives have their date of manufacture printed on the the label, other parts (like RAM) might have warranty stickers on them that could indicate more or less how old they are.

Solve : keyboard and mouse dont work?

Answer»

I have 2 people that are running windows xp professional that are saying their mouse and keyboard both do not WORK. Does this mean that the mobo is bad? I CANT get anywhere WITHOUT one of them working. The computers boot up to windows but keyboard and mouse dont work. Any suggestions? With the little info you've posted it's impossible to say whether it's the mobo or not.
When did the problem start and did mouse and keyboard stop working on both computer simultaneously?
Is the mice/keyboards USB or PS/2?
Have you tried another mouse/keyboard on the computers?
1. I'm guessing these are USB keyboards and mice. Perhaps you could give us the specs on one and/or both of these systems. Start with one system.

What is the INTERFACE type of the keyboard (USB, PS2, wireless)?

What is the interface type of the mouse (USB, PS2, wireless)?

Will the system accept a PS2 keyboard and/or mouse? Can you borrow working PS2 components to help troubleshoot the system?

2. Can you get the system specs for at least one of the systems?
o Brand Name Computer (Manufacturer)
o Model Number
o MOTHERBOARD Manufacturer/Model Nbr (if not brand name computer)

Solve : MS Outlook - "Allow in-cell editing" on one field only?

Answer»

Hi

I have a group inbox in Outlook which is accessible by a number of people. I want to create a user-defined field so that whoever WANTS to "take charge" of an INCOMING mail can put their initials on it so that the others don't need to read it (THERES a lot of e-mails there!).

I tried switching on the "ALLOW in-cell EDITING" option, which allows someone to type their initials in the user-defined field. The only problem is by doing this the user can also edit the subject/authr etc.

Is there any way to limit the "Allow in-cell Editing" option to one field?

Anyone?

Solve : usb root hub will not load hardware there for cannot us my usb connection?

Answer»

I cannot GET the usb root hub to load the hardware. I have a dell 8400 with windows xp home with service pack 2. I have checked the irq and do not see any conflict there. I have uninstalled and installed the drivers so many times but does no good. I bought a pci card and installed that and it does the same thing. When you go into the system all you see under usb where you should see usb root hub is unknown device and yellow exclamation tags. I have reloaded the chip set and updated the bios and still see nothing good happening. Where does the INFORMATION COME from for these root hubs to load the hardware? I am by no means a computer expert just a beginner. This is my husbands computer and he had not used the usb until he got a ipod and could not use the usb ports so don't no how long they have been out. He has had a lot of trouble with this computer and has had 2 HARD drives, dvd drive and memory all replaced under warranty which is now expired. So he has had to format the new drive and REINSTALL all the operating system and drivers. That is the only thing I have not done yet is format and reinstall all the programs was hoping that would not have to do that. Travel to Dell's site and enter your service tag # from the machine. DLoad and re-install the MBoard drivers and this should cure the problem.

IS there any way to recover these or start over and set up a new one?

I had a similar problem had to do with the Admin PASSWORD and I followed these instructions and it worked.
Follow these instructions and after step 5
Go to control panel and do what you need to do from there.

From Computing.net forum, Response #3 (method2) - http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/157929.html

Instructions Here:

Lost password, Change Password or Delete Password on XP User Accounts with Admin or limited Privileges.

This procedure only works if you can enter safe mode thru the hidden Admin Account

1-Boot to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key while booting

2-Choose safe mode, Press Enter

3-Select operating SYSTEM, Press Enter

4-Click Administrator Account

5-Windows is running in Safe Mode, Click YES

6-At the Safe Mode Desktop, click, Start, Control Panel

7-Double click User Accounts, Here you can delete accounts, delete/change passwords ETC.

8-When done Close all Windows

9-Restart Computer
Tried it but only got though getting into SFE mode. The problem still is we cannot find
an admin account. When you log off, no switch user screen comes up. It defaults back to
login screen for the only account, which is limited. If you are booting into safe mode properly you are in the default Admin account. There is no prompt.
Did you answer the questions in your other thread ? ?If there is another computer you can get access to there is an application CALLED NTPassword that will let you change the password of any account on the machine.

Thanks very MUCH for your help. It looks like your model COMES with one 512MB memory stick.
Turn off your computer, open the case. You'll see this:

Touch any bare metal part of your computer (power supply will do), then remove your RAM stick. Clean connectors with eraser. Put it back. Don't close the case. Restart your computer.
If it doesn't work, turn it off, and put your RAM in second slot. Try again.

Solve : Moving all files from a tree to root?

Answer»

Basically, I'm looking for a way (through DOs, perhaps?) to move all FILES in SUBFOLDERS to the root directory. Let me EXPLAIN this by showing my setup:

Parent : Music (Root)

Level 1 Sub-Directory: Green Day
Level 2 Sub-Directory: Dookie
DO - Song 1.mp3
DO - Song 2.mp3
DO - Song 3.mp3

Level 2 Sub-Directory: American Idiot
AI - Song 4.mp3
AI - Song 5.mp3
AI - Song 3.mp3

Level 1 Sub-Directory: Blink 182
Level 2 Sub-Directory: Enema of the State
ES - Song 1.mp3
ES - Song 2.mp3
ES - Song 3.mp3

Level 2 Sub-Directory: Blink 182 - Greatest Hits
BGH - Song 4.mp3
BGH - Song 5.mp3
BGH - Song 3.mp3

What I want to do is move all of the MP3 files to the "Music" folder; in other words, I want to move all files in subdirectories up to a desired parent folder.

Anyone know of a way I can do this? I searched for utilities online but it's kind of a difficult thing to search for. I was also thinking there is possibly a way to do this through DOS.

Moving manually is not practical -- there are hundreds of folders. This may WORK for you:

Code: [Select]@echo off
for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%X in ('dir /s /b \music\*.mp3') do (
move "%%x" \music
)

I guessed that those prefixes (DO, AI, ES, and BGH) were part of the song name otherwise you'll have problems with duplicate song titles.

Good luck.

It worked, thanks a million!

Solve : Installing Windows XP Home SP2??

Answer»

I had to restore my computer a while back and the cd that I have with the PC have SP1 on it. Now this has happened several times but when I install SP2 my computer stops working. It NORMALLY either doesn't start up at all or it just keeps restarting itself. Currently it is running on SP1 because I'm tired of redoing it.Try here:
http://winhlp.com/node/125Thanks I would try something it says in there but this time I never updated to SP2. And alst NIGHT I shut it off and started it this morning.

I got an error about

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\System 32\hal.dll

Then I restarted it and got this:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\System 32\ntoskrnl.exe

Then I restarted it again and got this:

Disk boot failure, insert system disk boot failure. It's even hard to say, where to start.
As you can see:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hal.dll+error&btnG=Google+Search
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ntoskrnl.exe+error&btnG=Google+Search
lots of possible causes.
You'll have to investigate.Wyzrd,
I had the same thing. I all began when I installed a bigger Hard Drive given to me. The works ran fine at nigth. In the morning it stalled on the same messages. After three attempts, (of re-installing) I finally put the old drive back in and voila, no problem.
I recon it was a bad drive that works fine when the system is nice and warm, come the NEXT day, doing a cold start it won't function. Thanks broni I'll have to look into it but who knows to what sucess.

And alexK that is the same thing that happened to me.This will happen with an "ahem" version of XP...

Does your CD have holograms and say Microsoft all over it ? ? Patio,
what I was trying to install was W2K on a 39gig HD , as the old 29gig HD was full, and loaded with gazillions of programs/applications.

I am the owner of the Installation W2K CD and it is original, and originally loaded on the 29gig.
The 39gig was formatted on a different machine, but my machine did not like it. After reformatting and installing W2K it would run fine until a Cold Start. I repeated this several times, and noting the messages that came across. These were the same: Dll, Hkeys, exe and other complaints.
I finally reformatted the 29gig and installed W2K. No problems up to now.
I don't think it would make any difference XP or W2K. It is the HD.Are you saying you want to be able to boot to the 39G as well as the 29G with Win2K ? ?
There are 3 different ways to accomplish this so post back with what it is you want to be able to do...I think you misunderstand. I wanted to replace the 29gig with a 39gig. Not adding. Then the best / safest way to accomplish what you want would be to DLoad the utilities from the 39G drive manuf. website.
Hook up the 39 as a slave and boot to the DLoaded utilities on CD/floppy and "clone" the 29 to the 39...
Shut down and remove the 29 and hook up only the 39 as master and re-boot
Make sure everything is there and runs properly.
After that you can safely format the 29 and hook it up as a slave and use it for storage...

Solve : How do you get icons on the task bar?

Answer»

I run windows xp and for some reason my task bar went crazy. It DOUBLED in size and in order to get it back to its original size i had to un-tick "quick launch". But with quick launch un ticked i can not PUT the icons i need on the task bar. How can i keep the task bar small (normal size) and still have my icons there? You will need quick launch in order to have icons on your taskbar.
Try enabling quick launch again.
Then right click the taskbar and deselect "Lock the Taskbar".
Move the mouse cursor to the TOP edge of the taskbar and the cursor should change.
Hold down the left mouse button and pull the mouse down.
If this WORKED you can lock the taskbar again.

I have XP - when I try to download it stops with 100kb to go.
If I download through filehippo.com, it wont begin the installation process and says "NOT A VALID WIN32 APPLICATION". Tried all the tips in iTunes etc...is there something wrong with the PC?

Also, try here:
http://www.download.com/iTunes-for-Windows/3000-2166_4-10235268.htmlhi there,

I have Windows XP SP2 and a 512k broadband.
I tried your link - when I download from apple at any time, I get the downloading window with the flying files etc but nothing is downloading and no speed of download is showing. If I use filehippo.com, it sometimes downloads up to 1 second to go but the .exe part of it wont launch the application.
thanks,

Is it DSL?

Try another link:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/itunes.htmlhi again,

link does the same thing as apple unfortunately.
Sorry, dont know what DSL is.......all I know is that I use a pocket VOIP to get broadband.
Sometimes I can download 51.7MB of 51.8MB of iTunes and then it stops.
Also cannot update MS Explorer to version 7 / secondlife / adobe and most other big files.
I can download small things....having spoken to my providers, there are no restrictions to downloading etc.

What browser are you using to download things? Do you use pop-up blocker?
You may have some infection, as well. What do you have for protection? Firewall, antivirus, antispyware?pure IP in UK for PROVIDER. MS explorer 6 and firefox for browser. Windows firewall and was using nortons until 2 days ago, now AVG.

Solve : Windows ME - need to restore computer?

Answer»

Beautiful..!! This is what I have been looking for. I'll try it and let you know....thanks much.
Okay.......I give up !!! I've done everything suggested...boot disk, gone through all the procedures, when I get to step 14 (Type sys c:), the computer tells me "cannot find systems file in STANDARD location...", and the machine still can not/will not read the CD drive- error message "not ready reading drive E". BUT, when I rebooted with the XP CD only in the machine, everything started loading. Go FIGURE !!

Loading XP now. If this doesn't work this time I'm going to have a NICE new boat anchor. Thanks for all the help, guys. Looks like I'll be staying with XP. Things running smoother and a bit FASTER now. The resource hog went out with the format. I appreciate alll the help....very much. I learned quite a bit, even though I had to go another route. Again, thanks much !! You guys are very patient with us dummies. Great job.

Darn.....now I guess I'll have to go out and spend money for a new anchor. In the meantime shop around for a good deal on a Win2K CD...most of the features of XP but with 1/2 the resources required.
I'd also add another STICK of RAM as well. And don't forget to add some protection to keep the bugs away.

Solve : Windows Media Player issues?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I have been using windows media for dvds and avi, etc, but a week ago i started getting wmp and there's a white screen that blankets over my screen (as if someone had turned up the brightness settings). It doesn't matter if its a dvd or an AVI file that is on my hard drive, it will still have that white screen. I attempted to reinstall wmp and as well as updated my drivers on my 7600GT, but it didn't help. I attempted to mess around with the brightness settings and that only screwed up the colors. However, strangely when I played AVI files on the Divx player, then everything was fine. So i tried other programs and they all had that white screen associated with it.

My system is currently running XP with most everything updated. I have various codecs and AC3 filters installed. This issue is annoying me a lot and if you guys can help me out, I would really appreciate it, thanks! Can you take a screen shot of what is happening?

What 'other programs' have you tried?A screen shot is a good idea because that will tell us if the problem is in the system or in the monitor. Is the "white screen" over everything or just the video? Is it possible it is over everything but only noticeable when watching video? A few more details would be nice.

Have a happy holidays.Hi and thx for the replies... I have taken a screenshot of the movies using VLC media player and DiVX player. I attempted to take one with WMP but unfortunately they don't let you display screenshots from that so i cannot post it. However, the VLC media player is showing what happens on the WMP. The screenshot is of the same exactly copy of Superbad at the same exact second. This white screen occurs throughout the board with all my PLAYERS EXCEPT for Divx. DVDs are no EXCEPTION. Thank you for any help you guys can GIVE me.

Attachment: The picture on the left is of the "white screen" and the picture on the RIGHT is that of DIVX.

[saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Graphics card drivers usually have a section for adjusting brightness and color settings for video playback. Have you checked whether these settings have been messed with?no i haven't... in fact, i updated my drivers to the latest drivers and the problem was not fixed. Even though you updated the drivers video settings might have persisted. Whenever I update my graphics card drivers it still retains my custom settings.

Solve : Start up then lock up?

Answer»

Yup. Running smoothly in Normal Mode now.Okay then we only need to find out what start up item is causing the freezing.
So lets see what you've got in startup.
The easiest way to do that is if you download Hijackthis from here.

In ORDER for Hijackthis to detect what's starting up with windows I believe you will need to reenable the startup items you disabled in msconfig.
So do that and let msconfig restart the computer but start up in SAFE mode so it doesn't freeze.

Run Hijackthis and select "Do a system scan and save a LOG FILE".
After its done, close Hijackthis.
Post the log file it creates here. (It may require several posts.)
Then we can both see what's starting with windows and our resident Hijackthis experts can check the log for anything bad.

Btw. I'm going to bed now so I wont be replying any time soon.

Solve : REALLY NEED URGENT HELP----PLEASE----?

Answer»

Hello, ok my problem is my PC that is running Windows XP service pack2 will not boot properly. I was in the startup menu (the one where when your PC is booting you press DEL) and i changed some CPU settings (i changed the speed of it from like 850 to like 1300 or sumthing like that). After i pressed F10 to save settings my PC just crashed and now it wont boot and the screen wont even turn on :S. Please HELP me!!!....Power down the machine.
Remove the power cord from the outlet it's plugged into.
Press the On switch on the front of the machine a few times.
Now you need to remove a side panel or the case cover to remove the CMOS battery. located on the motherboard.

Be careful removing it as rge spring clip that holds it in is easy to break. Wait 10 minutes; replace the battery hook uo the power and boot up.

Refrain from foolin around in the BIOS.....lol, thnx 4 da help i was just curious, and i geuss thats probly not the best thing 4 my computer
IF only it was that easy to speed up your computer. lol......yh......im still havin trouble tryina get this darn battery out, im not very good at these small things:SA toothpick is useful...it should break before the spring does.

You definitely DON"T want to break that spring unless you are in the market for a new MBoard or have superior soldering skills...hey, so if ive broken it it will stuff up my pc, cause it did work and fixed my pc but then after about a day i had the same problem again, do you THINK it could be because ive broken the spring?Did you replace the battery ? ?
If so it wouldn't go dead that fast...
Have you been messing around with CPU settings again ? ?
If not the machine has other issues.
Please post what it's doing now...yes i did replace the battery and nothing happend, no i havent been messing around with the cpu settings, and when i push the power button to turn it on nothing comes up on the screen, it just stays black and nothing comes up(i have it all pluggd in right and i have tried other monitors on it), the motherboard doesnt BEEP like usual when it loads up either. The computer is an OLD one, i think i got it like 8 years ago or something like that and we have replaced the mother board twice from failures and added more ram. Im not to sure on the hardware specs for it because i was like only 8 when we bought it and im not sure on how to find them out.
YAY.......i fixed it, i just went around the insides of if for a bit adjusting cables and giving it a clean and now the screen loaded up. I think i might just reset the bios settings just to be safe thankyou all for your help and sorry about the double post :S

Solve : Error 1053?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to stop a service in WINDOWS XP SP2. However, when I try to stop the service, I receive Error 1053. I'm trying to stop the Telephony service because it is hogging my CPU. I can pause the service, but I can't stop the service.

Right now I'm too angry to type.

Any help very appreciated.
Thank you.Did you try SAFE Mode?
Try also "ServiWin": HTTP://www.nirsoft.net/utils/serviwin.htmlI'll see what happens in Safe Mode...Sometimes, there is a problem to stop some service, but you can always set it to "Disable", and when you restart your computer, it won't be running anymore.Safe Mode didn't work. The Advanced STARTUP Options SCREEN was bypassed. Instead, I was told to select the OS to start, even though I only have one.

I disabled the Telephony service, so I'm going to restart and see what happens.Thank you, Broni.

SVCHOST.EXE is no longer hogging my CPU.You're welcome, and use that ServiWin program, which is better, then Windows "services.msc".

Solve : in need of help-computer wont load?

Answer»

Hello, umm im having trouble with my computer not LOADING when i turn it on. My bios was going a bit funny because i was LOOKING around in there the other day and i went into CPU SPEEDS and tried to change them around but it just wrecked my computer. I got help on here and some guy told me to remove this little battery thingy that was like on my mother board sumwhere and i did and it fixed the problem. But then the other day i tried to start my computer and it didnt start again, i tried removing that little battery again but this time it didnt work. now my screen, keyboard, and speakers wont load when i turn my computer on. if someone can help me id be really happy cause i kinda need it up and running soon.......thankyouIs the battery in properly ? ?
It should be shiny side down.Yep..check the battery, and if it will let you back into bios...look for a "reset to default" section & use it. That will put everything back like it ought to be.
If you can't do anything in bios..I know on some models if the battery is removed it wipes the bios out...has to be redone manually. Hope this isn't you're case, but if you have the manual it should tell you all the default settings.arrgh well ok then, umm, i had this same problem the first time and when i removed it, it did work and it didnt wipe my bios but i tried putting the battery from this computer(which is alot newer than the one im trying to fix) into my older one and it didnt work......maybe it did wipe my bios this time........Are the batteries you swapped the same size? In voltage & mA I mean. Some are different in power rating & that could cause a problem too.It doesn't wipe the BIOS...it resets the BIOS back to it's default settings which will correct any wrong changes you made.lol my motherboard is PROBLY screwd then.......ill have to test it outYou now have 2 threads going on this issue and we haven't even determined if it is in fact the MBoard...

I'll have to admit i've never seen someone LOL so much about a dead MBoard before.Yeah i didnt know where to post it sorry, and well i think it could either be the mother-board or my vedio card because i havent heard it beeping or anything, im still trying to get my CPU out so i can see if it will beep but im having a bit of trouble removing the clips. YAY.......i fixed it, i just went around the insides of if for a bit ADJUSTING cables and giving it a clean and now the screen loaded up. I think i might just reset the bios settings just to be safe thankyou all for your help and sorry about the double post :S

Solve : Problems with searching within Windows Explorer?

Answer»

Hi,

I am having trouble with using any type of search engine while using windows explorer. Bascially no matter what I type if I click on the link I want to go to it will reroute to a porn website. On some websites it will allow me to click back and go back to the search results and on other I have to forceable go back to the search then if I click again, all is well and it goes to the correct site.

This doesn't happen with firefox only with explorer. It occurs on any type of websearch (google, yahoo etc.). It is very frustrating. Ive got the latest version and frequently CHECK my system with virus software but something is serious screwing with the search function.

Please helpSounds like you have adware. Do you have adware/spyware protection and an antivirus?
I recommend Avast Home Edition for antivirus ( www.avast.com )
(I dont use Spyware protection myself, so, I wont go about recommending any, but its a good idea to have one) Quote

I am having trouble with using any type of search engine while using windows explorer
I assume, it's Internet Explorer.
Most likely, your computer is infected...

1. Run free online scan at: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
The Housecall log is saved to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\.housecall\log\
Post HouseCall log.

2. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Print these instructions out.

SUPERAntiSpyware should be run in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; pick Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all OTHERS unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will OPEN in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
* Click Close to exit the program.
Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.

3. Download HijackThis:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
Post HijackThis log. Thanks for the help.

After using hijackthis it appears that I had:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://kingkongsearch.com/

in my registery

So after taking it out, all appears fine.

ThanksIt won't hurt to post those logs anyway, just to make sure, nothing more is lurking out there.

Solve : Some emails goes to deleted file...?

Answer»

Hi, I'm a newbie here.

I suppose lucky for me, I don't get lots of email. But, some emails I want to receive including those from a good buddy, always go immediately to my deleted items file. When I hit "Send/Receive" I can see his emails coming in for a split second then its gone. When I click on the deleted items icon - there they are. I've tried everything to figure out how to change this without SUCCESS. I've never to my knowledge, right clicked on any of his emails to add it to the "junk email senders list". If I did, how does one go about correcting that.

Any suggestions? Thanks in ADVANCE for any help.Welcome to CH forums.

Your situation depends on your email server. It would be helpful if you specified that.

Common solutions would be your filters. Some systems allow you to filter out your incoming emails, so that all emails from a certain address goes directly to deleted folder. This helps prevent SPAM email.

You can access your filter settings (again this depends on your server), through your email options, often displayed as a link. Thanks for the fast reply JXY! I receive my email through MS Outlook. I hope this helps you to help me further. Thanks. The only things that can cause this is are some settings in Message Rule, Blocked Senders, or a spam program. As Broni said, normally it's some settings (like blocked senders) which cause your described issue.

try accessing your outlook settings/options. See if you can find the setting you're looking for there.

Sorry for being so vague, but i don't use microsoft outlook, so can't give any specific details. Perhaps someone else who does use outlook can step in now should your problem persist.Quote

Solve : reinstall windows xp or switch to vista?

After WEEKS of frustration from programs crashing, runtime errors, etc., I have decided to reinstall my XP sp2, from drive D on my HP Desktop; another option is to buy Vista. MS said my computer would run Vista Home Premium.

I would like to hear some opinions from those who have experience in this.

Windows XP, SP2, 200 GB HARD drive 1.5gb ram. HP Pavilion a1120nWhat's the processor speed, and VIDEO RAM?Processor is a P4 3.07 GHz. I don't know offhand how to check the video ram. What does it say in Device Manager, under Display Adapters?Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chip Family.

I found under Adapter Ram 128. MB. would that be it?This is on-board video. I'd get real video card with 512MB of RAM (256MB, if money matter is at stake), and you should be good to go for Vista.Sounds like a plan. THANKS BroniSure thing

Also so you know what that box is?I think this is a virus. Try to open another OS and fix itIt very well may be an infection but what do mean by asking them to "open another OS" to fix it ? ?
Before you "Open another OS and fix it".....just kidding...LOL

and post its log at "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forumThis may or may not help, but I had a simular problem trying out a regcleaner. One of the most self destructive weapons available if you dont pay close attention. But, in any case if you have recently ran a type of "cleaner" program that has removed a file out the REGISTRY:HKeyCurrentUser-HKeyCurrentConfg. or one the others.

Then just throwing this out as a possibilty..has simularities I went thru with run.dll

But I would check this out secondary (if you even need to), as it looks like ur primary problm is identified

Solve : NetScape JS3250.dll error?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to FIX my friend's computer. She is using NetScape Communicator and whenever she tries to email an MP3 file she gets this error. I've done a lot of research and I've found that most of this type of error occurs with Firefox. She can still send out and receive messages. It's just when she tries to mail an attachment that she gets this error. Any Ideas? What Windows, Netscape version?
Does it happen only with MP3s, or with any bigger attachment?I'll have to check with her computer after the holidays. Thanks and best wishesQuote from: Broni on December 24, 2007, 02:29:16 PM

What Windows, Netscape version?
Does it happen only with MP3s, or with any bigger attachment?
Windows ME and NetScape Communicator 4.5 I worked on her computer on Boxing Day and found that the problem only occurs when I right click on a file and select "send to mail receipent." no matter what size. If I use a new message and attach a file, there is no problem. It LOOKS like JS3250.dll file got corrupted.
Netscape 4.5 is a really OLD browser, but, if she prefers it, I'd recommend reinstall over the top (find JS3250.dll file, first, and rename it to JS3250.old). You can download from here: http://netscape.1command.com/client_archive45x.phtml#4.5%20EnglishThanks, Broni. I'm trying to convince her to get off Netscape. Perhaps this will push her over the edge.Version 4.5 was probably the best they EVER wrote before they sold out to AOL and started the Mozilla Foundation creators of FireFox and ThunderBird...
It included a web page editor that was very intuitive an e-mail client etc...

I still run it on an old build.

But get her to FireFox if you can...Netscape (which I used for years) had ver. 6, and 7 before it went to AOL...
Firefox, certainly, should be a nice change.

Solve : A couple issues...?

I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP and then everything else. There are a couple issues that I need help with.

First, when running Firefox (or Explorer for that matter) the page needs to be resized to fit the screen. It's too large by about 1/3 and I don't know how to resize it.

Then when switching between users sometimes I will get a white screen that
gradually turns to black and ESSENTIALLY shuts down the computer.

I've also gotten this ERROR message...

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system. It does not log me ONTO default. It proceeds to the proper user profile.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or RESTORE a FILE into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.

I'd appreciate any thoughts.

I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP and then everything else. There are a couple issues that I need help with.

Solve : i messed up my pc?

Answer»

basically i tried to install my ipod, fiddled around with the usbs and what not. now my internet wont work and everytime i try to change something it says i cant becausa windows may be running in safe mode, which its not. all the devices have no problems..but nothing works. what the frick have i done? Welcome aboard

What Windows version? Did you try to boot to Safe Mode, try System Restore?xp... yes and yes. i think booting in safemode is where most of my problems began. EVEN when i boot windows normally even things like "help and support" are disabled.Easiest fix?

Back up, format, re-install.Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /SCANNOW and HIT Enter...
Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to COMPLETION and re-boot.scannow didnt exist and sfc looked like it was doing something but nothing happened. i think the formating and starting again is looking a good optionQuote from: mattyp7 on November 17, 2007, 09:58:36 AM

And next time don't eff around with the USB controllers.

I too learned this lesson the hard way, but it was a printer being wierd.

Your iPod, when you say installing it, what do you mean?Quote from: mattyp7 on November 17, 2007, 09:58:36 AM

If scannow didn't exist then sfc wouldn't have done anything...
Are you sure you typed in the COMMAND properly ? ?
There is a space between sfc ant the forward slash and scannow.
sfc /scannow
