Solve : Two Windows XP`s at start up?

Answer»

Hi,
I recently reloaded windows xp due to a virus, which has now been corrected, but now when I start up the computer it goes to a dos style screen and asks me which windows xp I want to start ? If I do not choose one it just times out and picks one then starts normally. How do I git rid of this ?
Thank you very much !Sounds like theres still a record of the previous install left on the machine.

The "DOS screen" you're refering to is controlled by the FILE "boot.ini". It's a setting that helps people who dual-boot with windows.

It resides on your C: drive, and you should be able to open it with Notepad (right click "Open with..."). Change the "timeout=30" to "timeout=0", save the document and you won't see that screen again.

This will prevent this screen, but it won't clean up the underlying problem.

How confident are you with Windows XP, and computers in general?Hi Sid,
THANKS for replying, I can get around a computer pretty well, I know how to get to the boot file by typing in msconfig, but am not sure what to do once there.
Thanks, ShermI opened up the boot.ini in the System Config Utility and tried to set the timer to 0 but it would only let me go as low as 3 seconds so that is where I set it, I could see 2 windows xp`s in the list but I dont know how to get rid of one of them. What would happen if I clicked the "check all boot paths" button ? Also the first tab of the System Config Utility called "General" , under selective start up, which is checked, there is a circle to check, called "USE original boot .ini" which is unchecked, and the circle that is checked is the one that says "use modified boot .ini, will switching these correct the problem ?
ThanksYou have XP installed twice...
Editing the bootini will only accomplish not showing both installs on startup.
Do you want to remove the first XP install or the 2nd clean install ?
The method will be different.
If you choose the 2nd install do all your programs run and is all your data where it should be ? ?

This is a little trickier than just a simple edit according to what you want to accomplish...

Let us know.Yes, I want to remove the first install. I have been reloading my software, probably shouldnt yet but it all is working so far. I did follow instructions for reformatting the hard drive and then installing, one of the reasons I reloaded it is on my Emachine t6410 there are 3 usb ports on the front and they quit working. Also in the device manager under usb controllers it said unknown device, I could not find what it belonged to, I removed all usb devices that were plugged in and restarted, no change , then removed them all in the device manager and restarted, still there. I reinstalled windows I thought on a reformatted hard drive as per a friends recommendations but when the going gets rough he is never around.

Right, so you've GOT 2 HDD's and a Windows install on both of them?I dont know what HDD is.
ThanksHard drive.
This means one or more physical drives in the machine.
If you don't know what you have just open My Computer and list the drives here...I have a C and D driveOK you probably only have one hard drive...D is your CDRom drive.

Solve : Autoplay, Autoplay, Autoplay..........?

Answer»

Big problem which I can't seem to solve. When using my PC, with or without disc in drive, I constantly get a message box with flashing torch entitled autoplay. At the same time the bottom task bar shows numerous instances of "autoplay". If I am in a programme then I get thrown BACK to the desktop.
This is worst when I am playing games. Sometimes I am thrown straight back out as soon as I have got back into the game and on some games I can only get a few seconds of gameplay before I am thrown back to the desktop. At the same time the autoplay message box shows and the bottom task bar is either filled with autoplay instances or a windows EXPLORER message with a NUMBER in front of it. The largest number I have had is 15. Presumably the number of autoplay instances running.
I have, in the past, downloaded many trial programmes and then uninstalled them if they have been no use. I have been told that this may be a reason as the windows uninstall does not fully uninstall the programme. I have tried other uninstall programmes and registry fix programmes, but nothing seems to work.
Other than saving what I need and then recovering my hd with the disc that came with the pc then I don't know what else to do.
This is driving me scatty.....please HELP before they come to take me away to the funny farm I suspect some infection, rather.

Solve : new hard-drive and Windows XP?

Answer»

Ok I had to have my HARD drive replaced on my HP Pavillion dv4230us notebook and i was wondering if i would have to buy and reinstall Windows XP myself or if one of the discs that CAME with the notebook for repair or reinstallation would help. Also, am i going to have to reinstall EVERYTHING on to my notebook? If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.IF YOU HAVE THE XP DISK, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO REBOOT; HOWEVER, WHY DIDN'T THE PERSON WHO REPLACED YOUR HARDDRIVE DO IT? WHEN YOU DO GET IT BACK UP, BE SURE AND MAKE A SET OF RECOVERY DISKS.........I INSTALLED A NEW SEAGATE DRIVE IN MY PRESARIO AND SIMPLY LOADED EVERYTHING BACK UP WITH MY SET OF RECOVERY DISKS thanks...i haven't gotten my notebook back yet, i was just wondering if i needed to get xp. yeah i will make recovery disks now. luckily i had saved all my pictures from digital cameras on a zip drive about a couple of weeks before my hard drive FAILED. If they have the notebook and you didn't recieve XP CD's with it then your copy of XP is on a hidden partition of the HDD they are replacing...you should contact them immediately if this is the case.okay thanks, i'll ask them when i get my notebook back

Update: well the people fixing my notebook got it to run so they are going to try to back everything up before replacing the motherboard, so hopefully i'll still have my stuff.Good News...Thanx for letting us know.

Solve : I screwed up my microsoft office...?

Answer»

Operating System: Windows XP

I downloaded a free trial of Microsoft Office 2007 in order to use powerpoint. When I downloaded it, microsoft.com gave me a REGISTRATION PRODUCT key for it, I guess because I already had Microsoft Office 2003, and this was considered an update, not sure. So I put in the product key, and most of my files still WORK even in the new Microsoft word, I even managed to make a presentation on Powerpoint with it, and then came the problem. When I tried opening my presentation today, it didn't no what to open it in, and I realized that I couldn't find Powerpoint, or any of the other office programs like Microsoft word or excel (the files still work but I can't find the actual programs or open my powerpoint presentation). Even the desktop SHORTCUTS deleted themselves. None of it ended up in the recycle bin but I cant find any of my office programs anywhere . All I found in the C drive was a folder saying PowerPoint2007 which just includes the install files (I don't no if I should reinstall or not because I'm REALLY confused right now). I found a "Microsoft Office" folder but it doesn't contain the programs.

Help?

Solve : Looping start up on XP?

Answer»

I restarted yesterday and the thing just keeps looping going from showing me my vid card info (which is normal), then going to the 'starting windows' page and then it winds up on the menu options for starting (I chose safe mode), and then after that it goes right back to the vid card info thing and starts the process all over again? That is first for me.

Anyway to fix this. Should I just re-install XP? If that is the case, how would I install it while it is going through that looping process?

Any help would be great and thanks in advance!See, if it'll start into Safe Mode. Start tapping F8 key when your computer starts.Quote from: vegaswilly on November 09, 2007, 07:56:30 PM

1. I believe he ALREADY "...chose safe mode...".

2. Tap F8 key about once per second during startup to GET to "Windows Advance Options Menu".

3. Once there, select the FOLLOWING item:

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

4. If that doesn't resolve the "restart cycle" that you appear to be in, and you're running Windows XP SP2; from the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" select the following item:

Disable automatic restart on system failure

Hopefully you'll now stop at a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) that has error message text and numbers on it. If you COPY this data exactly as it appears and post it here, someone can search internet using "substrings" of the error message to find potential causes and resolutions.

I don't believe this "item" appears on earlier versions of Windows XP (original or SP1).

5. What service pack level are you at? Original, SP1, SP2?

6. Do you have Windows XP setup CD and is it original, SP1, or SP2?

7. If you want to read ahead see the following links (and sublinks):

http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid1_gci968110,00.html

8. Please post back after step 3 or 4; let us know what worked, what didn't work, and where you're at.Thanks for the detailed reply.

I Did the 'last known config' and it still looped.

I got to your paragraph 4 and that didn't work.

Also, I believe I only have SP1 installed because there was no 'disable automatic restart' on system failure option. I TRIED every other option on the menu with the same results.

I do have a e-machines restore CD, but that was a little scary. Once I booted up with that it gave me a message that it would 'restore contents of hard drive to it's original state when I acquired the PC and would repartition the hard drive and reformat the hard disk'. I'm afraid had I hit the enter button I would lose all of my data. Am i correct?

On your paragraph 8: I do not have the XP setup CD, but again I believe I am at the SP1 level.

I can borrow a friends XP install disk tomorrow and maybe do a cold boot with that?

I really hate the fact that I get my own owner code for XP when I buy a PC but they don't give me an XP disk (but that is another issue).

Anyway, any more thoughts on this are welcome.1. Restore CD. Yes, if you had continued with the e-machines restore CD you would have lost all of your data.

2. Check File System. From your description, it appears that your system recognizes the hard drive, successfully reads the Master Boot Record (MBR), successfully reads the Boot Record, and is attempting to load your operating system. At this point I would verify the integrity of the file system upon which Windows is located as well as the surface of the disk within that partition. You may use the "chkdsk" utility within Windows XP "Recovery Console" to do this. Hopefully this will clear up any file system issues and allow you to restart successfully.

If your operating system was installed on your "C:" drive the applicable command would be "chkdsk c: /r".

3. Access Recovery Console. Recovery Console may be accessed from either the Windows XP Setup CD or the Windows XP Setup Disks (set of six floppy disks). Boot from either the setup CD or floppy disk set to access it. You should try to use media compatible with your current system: Home or Professional; original, SP1, SP2. When in doubt, I'd start with Windows XP SP2 (Home Edition?) media and work backwards. If your system has a floppy drive, you may download the exact configuration for your current system:

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307654

You receive an error message if you try to install the Recovery Console on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898594/

4. Recent Changes. Did you update any software and/or hardware recently? Disable swap/paging file? Particularly just before you restarted and went into automatic restart mode?

5. Recovery from OEM Restore CD. If you decide to re-install from your OEM Recovery CD (Restore CD), you should consider buying and installing to a new hard drive so as to not overwrite your current data. Best to take out old drive and replace with new to "ensure" old drive not overwritten during install. Then worry about getting data off of old drive. However, I hope you're not at that point yet. There are still options that may be tried.

PT111007 where first 2 CHARS is name of CAMERA (PT=Pentax, 6 digits =date shot)

What I would like is:

Solve : HELP ME!!!!!!!?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 2000. It cannot start-up because files are missing or corrupt. I have a Windows XP Pro install CD but there is no CD drive in the computer. I found an external one but it was never installed on the computer. I also have boot disks for WIn 2000 and XP Pro. What can I do to install XP on the laptop? (do I have to somehow install drivers for the CD drive?)wow this SOUNDS fun

plug in the external drive then turn on the laptop as its booting up see if you can get into the bios f10 i think but not sure you may have to just run your finger accross all the "f" keys as its booting up. if you can get into the bios see if you can find a menu that has a boot up sequence in it look for the cdrom drive and have it set at number 1 followed by your floppy followed by your hard drive now get out of all this and open the cd rom and put your boot up disk in

restart the computer and hope for the best i DONT work with win2000 so i cannot HELP you from here but if you use the help options in the disk you might be able to fix the missing boot filesIts as if the CD drive is not even there. It is not recognized in any way and when I go to the boot menu in BIOS setup all that is listed is a diskette drive, hard drive, and an old CD drive that is no broken and of no use.Use the set of 4 Win2K floppies to boot...this may load drivers so the external drive can be seen.
It may not be D: so you'll havt to try a few letters including R:
When finished booting at the A: prompt type D: dir and hit Enter until you find which drive letter is being used.
Once located then type the drive letter I.E. D: setup and hit Enter.
The installation will now start.what if I only have one usb and my usb hub does not work when i plug it in for some reasonDid you read what was suggested ? ?
The floppy drive should work no matter what the USB ports are doing.
Then the external CDRom should show up since the bootdisks have loaded generic drivers...when i'm on the boot menu, it gives me the option to enter setup, repair (USING emergency disks or recovery CONSOLE) or just quit. do I want the recovery console? You want a repair install...

Instructions here

I suggest reading thru them first paying attention to the Warnings, and printing out a copy for reference.
If done properly XP will be fixed and all your data will be intact.
If done improperly you may lose all your data but will have a fresh install of XP

Good Luck.

Solve : I can't download anything?

Answer»

My COMPUTER was running extreamly slow. So, I downloaded windows XP which is what I had at originally, but with SP2. Now I can't download all my updates "fail". I can not download windows defender, microsoft INSTALLER 3.0. I have tried NUMEROUS times to download SP2, but it just keeps bringing me to Microsoft Updates, which SP2 is not an OPTION. I can not re downlad Norton or Java. I got I tunes back on my computer yesterday, but still can't download anything else. I also have another computer in which I upgraded from Windows 2000 professional to XP professional and it does the same thing on my other computer. Any Ideas on what is going on with my computer?Since you can't DLoad XP legally i would guess it's a bad copy of XP.I'm going to go under the assumption that they're not using the term download correctly... But if it is an illegal version of XP, then the best course would be to purchase a license.

Can you do anything online from either one of these computers? View websites, connect to AIM (or whichever service you use), etc.Yes I can view websites and MSN messenger. Once in a while an Update will download, but then I restart and it wants to download it again, then "fails". When ever I try to download Java it comes back saying " I am missing a cabnet file " Or says the file is corrupted. I also lost Internet Explorer 7 and am using a generic version of MSN exporer. My version of XP is from what I know legal. I received it with my computer in its original packaging.

I haven't got a cause or cure for your problem but advise that you should quit while you're ahead. Installing NAV may not be considered a good idea. See here for an EARLIER discussion.

I recommend AVG, the free version, with a good firewall such as Zone Alarm or Comodo, again free versions.

Good luckI use norton av 2007 and it's proved very effective for me. No viruses or spy/malware since i got it.
However, they say it's slow in terms of scanning i think. But i'm living with it. :pThanks JXY - good to hear of someone who has no problems with NAV.

I agree with Dusty on Norton...

disc(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)/windows/system32/drivers/ .sys

with a list of system files dispayed simular to above.

I use this computer for work. Is there a WAY to fix this without losing all of the data I NEED on the hard drive? If you have the original XP disk, you could TRY repairing the installation. You might have to reinstall some software, but you should keep the data. Alternately, if you have another computer in the house, you can BUY an external enclosure for that harddrive (which connects via USB cable) and copy your important files off it first.thank you i will try that and then rply if there is still an issues

Solve : Connecting wirelessly on a new XP pro?

Answer»

irishgirl,
A missing driver should not prevent installing an .exe...
But first try copying the .exe to the desktop machine...right now you are trying to install it from the external. Not sure if it should make a difference but worth a try. Grab a fresh DLoad as well.

Or you can try another small program called Belarc Advisor also FREE that will provide the same info...Nick: I'm sorry if I'm getting really confused, but the laptop is not the one that is missing drivers. It's the HP desktop that is the one that's missing stuff. Wouldn't I need to download the drivers for the desktop?

Patio: I did copy the exe to the desktop. I was not trying to install from the external hard drive. It was just weird because the laptop was allowing me to install the program while the desktop is not. I'll try another download, and that other program you mentioned and let you know what happens. Thanks again!Okay, I'm about at the end here... I don't know what else I can do.

I tried installing Belarc Advisor and this is the error message I received:

An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.

Something else has to be missing on it. Why else would nothing install? HOWEVER, I tried installing one of my art programs that I had on my external hard drive (openCanvas) and it WORKED. Why would that work, but the other files wouldn't?

I'm thinking about just finding a copy of XP home for this machine... it's not worth all the trouble! What do you guys think? Thank you!Quote from: irishgirl982 on December 19, 2007, 05:17:54 AM

I'm thinking about just finding a copy of XP home for this machine... it's not worth all the trouble! What do you guys think? Thank you!
That wont help, it will still need drivers. In order to get any version of XP working drivers will need to be installed. When you installed XP PRO on the HP desktop machine, was the installation interupted in any way, or did you get any error messages?
It may be worth re-installing XP if you haven't got any other programs or files on there yet.At this point i would be CONTACTING HP....with a serial 3 or something they should be able to give you a decent IDEA of the drivers for that machine...Any new computer that comes with vista has hardware only compatible with VISTA. You will not be able to install (revert) windows xp unless you install xp compatible hardware. That's not true wrwss. It is just a question of finding XP drivers. They might not be available from the manufacturer of the laptop, but the manufacturers who MADE the hardware installed in the laptop will provides drivers for at LEAST XP and Vista. (It doesn't make business sense at this point not to support XP.)Thank you so much, everyone. My friend is going to come over sometime next week and help me with the computer. I'll let you all know if we succeed. Thanks for all of your help! My friend was able to find the wireless driver and install it onto my computer. However, she was not able to connect via the ethernet connection. It says "Limited or no connectivity" and then it says "the reason for this is because it could not establish a new IP address for my computer" It says "please click repair" Once clicked, it says it cannot repair because it cannot establish a new IP address. My friend googled this problem and was unable to find an answer.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Solve : Light Blue scrollbar colors suddenly dominate every program....?

Answer»

Suddenly the listbox and vertical and horizontal window scrollbars of every program are dominated by (light blue) colors. I can't find reference to the exact problem anywhere.

It is a major problem since I am currently doing graphics and using a complex self-contained .exe maker to package, ship and display the graphics to clients. Having scrollbars in the viewer .exe that do not match its skin colors is major problem.

I have tried to reset display settings, browser settings and all manner of things. I cannot access scrollbar color in display settings, just the scroll bar size. Something has hijacked the settings.

Nothing I try makes a difference. I can't trace the change to an app install, web site or ANYTHING I can think of. No BUGS have been found by my AV and malware killers. I just ran them again. Though, I'm assuming this is the result of a malicious event.

Does anyone know how to get the explorer scrollbar's colors to cease dominating every program window?

System: WinXP Pro with SP2 and all updates installed -- clean install on a new magic box some MONTHS ago.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tsom

Not sure but TAKE a look here: right click on your desktop and select Properties to open Display Properties. Then, select the Appearance tab. What settings do you have there? Click on the Advanced button on that panel. Anything there that should be changed?

Solve : My monitor turns itself off?

Answer»

I have recently started having an issue with my monitor turning itself off. It happens in any different program; online or OFFLINE. The monitor turns off; then when I turn it back on, it will be on ANYWHERE from 1 SECOND to 10 seconds and it turns itself back off again. Occasionally it will stay on for longer.

I have replaced the monitor; so that is not the issue. The computer KEEPS functioning; if I click or type, it operates as normal; but I can't see what's happening. It's driving my crazy!

I am working in Windows XP on an HP. Anyone got any suggestions?

Help!?Maybe your video card? Do you have separate one, or on-board?
TRY Safe Mode. If your monitor stays up there, your video card will be main suspect.Have you looked around in Control Panel/Power Management ? ?

Solve : need help with video frame captures and corrections?

Answer»

I use PINNACLE for video editing. I can grab a frame and then open it in Photoshop to crop, brighten, etc. However, the photos are never crisp or clear, but grainy and blurry. I use a Hi8 Sony camcorder, and am now looking at upgrading my video cam .....wondering if this is the problem or is it my editing technique or my photoshop ABILITIES??? I have used photoshop with my DIGITAL still cam and those correct just fine. I am trying to STREAMLINE...if I can capture and correct right from the video cam.....I can elimintate the need for a still camera!! Can anyone help me with videocam suggestions and help on how to capture a video frame, then correct it in photoship for optimum results? THANK YOU!!!You could DLoad and install Irfanview (Free ) and do a few captures and then open them with it to see if the quality is any better and to eliminate Pinnacle as the culprit.
Also check the camera's video settings and see if they can be bumped up a bit.
A capture is never going to have the quality of a still UNLESS you get into the very high end cameras...

Solve : i added old harddrive to different computer?

Answer»

i just UPGRADED my whole system and wanted to add my old harddrive to new system to back up files then just junk old drive(old pc would notpower up) but it booted up from the old hard drive(running win 98) instead of new the new one(running xp)
it did a whole bunch of driver updates then rebooted ........now it keeps rebooting and saying it has to reboot with a od error
i then unhooked old drive and tryed to reboot using new drive
but it will not even boot up now it just says ....verifiying files...
i went into bios to change boot order but still not booting up........
anyway i can fix this without reformatting and reinstalling windows
i dont have any original drivers with the pc

any help would be apprieciated
thank youApparently, you had the old drive set as master when you put it in your new system. That's why the system booted from the old drive, and then, of course, updated drivers when Win 98 recognized different hardware.

Did you have your new drive set as slave when you installed your old drive?

Exactly what boot SEQUENCE do you now have set in the BIOS?

I'm not sure I'll be able to help you RESOLVE this, but post back with answers to these questions and, hopefully, someone can help you fix the mess you seem to have created. It sounds like something similar that happened to me...

I was effing around, and then got myself in some poop. (wow, self-censorship eh?)

Anyway,

I took the older drive out, completely and made sure the newer (the XP) drive was set as a master.

Now try to boot off that.

If you're having trouble try repeatedly tapping F8 to get into SAFE Mode just after the BIOS finishes loading Windows, just before that "Windows XP" loading screen.

Hopefully we're laughing.

If not, you'll probably need the XP CD.

If you are laughing, set your older drive as a slave, and add it back into the system, and launch the BOOT MENU (it can be an array of button pushes...watch for it at POST), now boot to your newer (XP) drive.

Still lucky?

If not, grab that CD again...but UNLESS the 98 HDD overwrote anything on the XP HDD, you should be ok.

Let us know, yeah?

Solve : Defender pro deleted something....?

Well I have tried to install the updates several times. It only says that some problem on your computer is not allowing the updates to be installed. ALSO it keeps asking for the drivers to the chipset when I try to install them off of the disk it cannot not find them. I put the disk in to install them from the disk menu and it will never get to the menu to start the driver install. Says installation failed but does not say why.Quote

It only says that some problem on your computer is not allowing the updates to be installed.
Can you post exact MESSAGE?That is almost the exact message. I can not find any error codes or anything like that. Is there somewhere I should look that would give more detail?Ok I went on the microsoft page and found this code under the failed updates. 0x80070005 I googled it and found a page saying that I needed to give the computer premission in the regedit file I followed the instructions and nothing changed. I will try restarting and see what happens.Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion and re-boot....Aside from patio's advice, try here:

Thanks BRONI!
That was it I had to delete and reinstall the windows installer. It is now downloading and installing updates like crazy. I will try to update the drivers tomorrow.
Thanks and
Merry ChristmasGood job Ok,
I have everything done but I cant get the drivers to the board to load. When I start the computer a window pops up and says: found new hardware, intel GRAPHICS chipset (kch) driver and promps me to insert my intel disc which I do. Then it says it cannot find ialmkchw.sys and for me to locate it. Upon canceling that one another found new hardware box pops up. This one says intel(r) graphics platform (softbios) driver. And it is looking for ialmsbw.sys

I have looked on the net and cant find a download for these. Although the ones on my disc should work Cancel out of each window and let Windows finish loading...then run the setup.exe off of the MBoard driver disk.
It obviously doesn't like the layout but they are all there.
Remember to re-boot.Still cant get it to work. I went to run and typed in iesetup.exe and it does the same thing. After a little bit it says timed out and thats it. Is there a place where I can download the drivers? I cant understand why it wont let me use the disc when it let me originally when I built the computer.
Thanksiesetup is for Internet Explorer...you want the driver disk...
Copy and paste the contents of the CD if you can.
It sounds like you are attempting to install something other than the drivers.
Also post EXACTLY what it says on the CD.

Solve : Format, Reinstall C: Drive, Affect F: Drive??

Answer»

Hi, I have an 80 GB harddrive with Windows XP Home on it LABELED C: and another 500 GB hardrive labeled F:. Some TIME ago I moved My Documents from C: to F: and in My Music I have about 60 GB of music.
My C: drive is getting kind of bloated and I was thinking about formatting it and reinstalling XP. I'm wondering what should I do with the F: drive? Will the reinstall take My Documents off F:? Should I back up all that music (and other important data in My documents) and format F: too? Will formatting C: have no effect on F:?

TRYING to avoid spending a lot of time putting all that data onto DVD's, thought maybe I could get away with leaving the F: alone and just wipe the C: and reinstall. Whatta ya think?

Windows XP Home 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 2 GB ramFormatting C: should not affect F: at all...
You will however have to re-direct your Doc and Settings folder back to F: for it to work properly.
Make sure to assemble all your drivers prior to the format.Thank you very much Patio. So, the new install will have a new My Documents on C:. How do I go about redirecting? I'm thinking right clicking on the C: My Documents/Properties and changing the target or something along these lines correct? MarkRight click on My Documents, select Properties, and click on the Move button.Yes I know how to move My Documents but if there is already a My Documents on the F: drive from the previous install, what then? That's my quandary. MarkLooks to me like the Find Target button, RATHER than Move, is the answer. It appears to be a way of telling Windows your My Documents folder is in a different location, without moving files and folders. All right, THANKS all. I'll give it a go.

Solve : A video card for Gigabyte board?

INFO ON SYSTEM SO FAR

Integrated T.I. IEEE1394 FireWire interface
Integrated high quality 8-channel AC'97 audio
2X160gig SATA HDD's from WD 16mg cache each
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
Thermaltake TMG A2 CPU COOLING Fan?
Both HDD's have Antec HDD heatsink&2fans on each HDD.
Round IDE Thermaltake Cable for FDD and Both IDE CD/DVD Drives
Aopen 18XDVD-RW+RW/CDROM

I had built this to sell and the person wanted paymnts. So now I need to FINISH and sell it, but I still need a good graphics CARD or two.

My QUESTION is I have two PCIe slots just for SLI. What WOULD be effecient and preform well and taking into the fact that it is built2sell. Is it fiesable to spend about 85.00 per card and go with two. Or just spend 200.00 on one card..Since the computer is built to sell, not sure on the best combo. I still need to buy and load OS, one CDRW/DVD-ROM and a KeyBoardMouse.

GIGABYTE GA-M55SLI-S4. REV.2.0
Any help on the video card or cards, XP-Media-Pro for OS, all help appriciated..
If you're building to sell, your audience must be less than demanding, if they'll take an Athlon X2 3800+ instead of Intel's latest offerings.
Always go for one higher performance card rather than two lower performance cards.
Why? Whilst it may look good (hey, this has TWO graphics cards!) anyone with a clue will realise that having one card that performs better than or equal to the SLI combo is better, because you can still SLI that one card later, whereas with the SLI cards you'd have to chuck them both out and buy a new card.
Does that help? Not worried about selling it with AMD CPU, alot of people dont know what they even have for a processor...Oh if they knew, love the QX6800 chips..

Thanks for the help

Solve : shutting down computer?

Answer»

Is it necessary to shut down my computer every time I am done using itMy PERSONAL opinion is no, it is not healthy for the computer. Almost all of my computer experience COMES from the manufacturing and industrial environment. I have worked alot in automation and robotics; what we have found in "our" environment is that you can drastically shorten the life of components like mobo's, cards, etc. because of the constant temperature changes in the physical characteristics of the board. Connections that have regular temperature variances eventually will develop tiny "pits" or "seperations" in the connections and solder receptacles that will allow moisture and any other microscopic airborne media to infiltrate and as a result create problems with the functionality of the components. This is why sometimes in electronic components, you will hear people say..."all I did was remove the connector and plug it back in...and it started working again " It is because you re-established the physical connection that this worked.

My personal computer is on 24/7, the only time I shut it down is when I know there is inclement weather reports close by. I also monitor temperatures quite OFTEN to look out for potential issues. Just remember this, electronics components in anything need to stay cool in order to have a long life; keep them in a well ventilated area, don't cover them up, or sit them on anything that can impede air flow in and around the UNIT. Good computing...................gator Not necessarily...

You could your hibernate or suspend, if you're hardware is able to be configured to do such. This is true; but with most users, it is much easier to simply shut it down, or leave it on. My system is set to hibernate, and I guess I should have mentioned that. If I were not going to use my system for an extended time, I WOULD of course shut it down. The "shortened" life comes from temperature instability, and not the procedure itself. If you are on the computer "often", then I would not shut down; Between work and home office I spend about 12-14 hours a day on the computer. Now I feel like we're doing someone elses homework for them...

Solve : Windows ME Graphic Problems?

Answer»

Hi there..I've just reinstalled Windows ME on my mums computer. But now that I have reinstalled it the graphics are very big and blocky...and basically not as good as they were before...Is there anything I can do...or will I have to live with it?

thanks for any help

chrisNeed the full system specs...

Did you also install the video driver?Yes we need specs. It sounds like your resolution or color is off.
Try this:
Right click the desktop, click the "Properties", find the "Settings" tab, and change your resolution to 800X600, and apply. If your screen goes all weird, let it sit for 30 seconds. It will change itself back.
If that doesnt work, change it to 640x400. Is that better?
If 800X600 worked, then try also increasing the color amount (using the drop down box, select True Color)
Once again, if things go weird, let it sit for 30 seconds.
If that worked, you MIGHT even try increasing the resolution to 1024X768, and seeing if thats even better.

If none of these worked, what KIND of screen are you using? LCD screens that are not in their native resolution tend to have the problems you are describing. Consult your LCD screen manual (try "Troubleshooting" in the manual) to find your LCD screens native resolution. Quote

chrisYou need to figure out what that graphics adapter is and download a driver for it like I said before. When you reinstalled the OS, you ERASED the driver. Now Windows doesn't know what to do with it which is why it looks like crap and you have no options.quaxo right!
you need to know your motherboard name to download the driver, then google it, i guess the first step now is to find the mobo name.

Solve : HELP, CANNOT VIEW WEBPAGES OR EMAILS?

Answer»

I recently downloaded a McAfee upgrade from their website. Since then I have been unable to view web pages or view e-mails. On internet explorer I just get a BLANK screen, no messages, address bar is empty. If I open my e-mail I can see that emails have been received, but cannot open them. When I try to open them I get a box asking me if I WANT to open or save the file; if I click to open I get the same screen as I get in internet explorer. McAfee have accepted that their files were corrupt and sent me a tool to uninstall it, which I did. My problem, HOWEVER, remains. I have tried to do a system restore, but all I get is an empty box.
Any ideas anyone? I obviously still have an internet connection as I am receiving -emails - I just can't read them. If I try to write one again I get an empty box. This e-mail is sent from my laptop which runs on the same internet connection.ok

firstly just turn off mcfee and see if your internet connection still works
there should be a couple of small iicons down by the clock right click on these and select the disable option

if your back on LINE the programme may be blocking certain programmes from accessing the internetyou may have to go through the mcfees help to find out how to ENABLE these programmes and allow them internet access

strange that i would allow you to down load email but not open them i have a feeling that it may have set all your security protocols to the highest level just check in both your email and internet programmes that your security is arround the medium or low marks

Solve : Windows XP Activation Issues?

Answer»

Hey guys, long time no see. How are we all? Just had a bit of a query. A friends PC had the "ehjalrp.exe" and "quqnrtl.exe" viruses on it, and because me and another mate were at the forefront for the English research on this virus, the friend asked me to remove it for them. I did so, but it had damaged part of her system and an XP Repair install was needed. I did so, and upon trying to boot up for the first time, I attempted to login. When I did so, it popped up saying I needed to activate XP or be logged off (which it normally doesn't do to me on a repair install, it gives me a few days), which I had no problem to do (because this is a legit copy), however, the problem arose when I tried to activate - each time I do, it will FREEZE, no matter what method I use, or what PC - be it really old or brand new. So I've come to the conclusion that the activation files are PROBABLY corrupt or SOMETHING, but what can I do to get past this? I've tried a few registry tweaks (generally illegally used, but because I know this system is legit, I don't have an ethical problem with it), but they didn't work, which again reinforced the conclusion that it is the activation files that are corrupted. Any suggestions? Thanks
-StephenUpdate: Never mind guys, I FIXED it. For future reference, none of the tweaks or other methods were needed, just a diagnostic startup (which obviously prevented some drivers from loading). It worked fine this time - no freezing. Still puzzled why it forced me to activate straight away though?

I have an OLD machine that has neither, but in those areas there seem to be this and that disabled or connections that i dont think should be. so it just made me WONDER what would be there if, like i say, a new xp os without network connection or internet connection set up. just curiosity. for instance my section has a dial-up section, internet GATEWAY section, and lan or highspeed internet section. each has various disabled or connected icons. but im sure there are none. so if i wiped everything and REINSTALLED xp os, would those sections be there without the icons, or would they not be there at all, and that window be blank? You may need to install DRIVERS for your Nic or modem. If you go into device manager do you have a question mark next to network adapters or the modem? If you do, it means you'll have to download and install drivers.OK well there isnt a problem. I dont want any connections. I was just wondering what I would see in that window on a new install with no connections is all.If I remember correctly, you should have just one icon: "New connection", or something similar.Quote from: joelorenz40 on December 31, 2007, 11:37:12 AM

depends what make/model your motherboard is and what is enabled. most motherboards nowadays come with built in network adapters and firewire adapters. if you do not wish to see these connections, you will have to disable them via device manager.

Solve : Keyboard and mouse stop working.......?

Answer»

Hello all, first the basics: the mouse and keyboard will stop working for no reason. It will happen on a web page, it will happen in email, it will happen when it's not being asked to do anything, it will happen after hibernation, it will happen when I'm playing solitare.
The system: 7 year old compac presario. Speed is 1100mhz, 1 gig of ram, 35 gig of hard drive (newer seagate), newer CD (sony) writer, Windows XP Pro with SP2. The system has the original video card and SOUND card. I interface with the web through cox high speed internet service.

The story: I started having problems with MS Outlook express not sending mail. What that finally ended up being was a corrupted db file. The current issue with the keyboard and mouse started shortly after the FIX (deletion of db file) .

What I have done: deleted the send db file-deleted the last outlook hotfix update, ran EVERY scan known to US mere mortals, visited microsoft, updated any drivers I could find relating to mice/keyboards.

The problems does not seem to be associated with a length of TIME or a specific action on my part. There are no error messages, no odd hd sounds or any other noise/action related to it. They both just stop, ctrl/alt/delete will do nothing, the only recovery is reboot. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks for your time and trouble.
Doug in AZ. USB or PS2 ? ?Mouse and keyboard both are PS2.

Thanks for nothing. appreciate the total lack of responses. Try a new keyboard and mouse....and cheer up. We're not all here 24/7.

Solve : freeze at last known good config screen?

Answer»

i have a friend's computer.

gateway p4 running xp home. model number MFHTXSTL ELP 500S

they said before this happened they were DOWNLOADING a program called bearshare. i looked up problems with this and i could not FIND anything about this program that caused your computer to do this....

when i start it up it acts normal, no beeps. i'm not sure if there are ERROR messages cuz i can't remember how to view them. the computer gets to the 'last known good configuration' screen and the countdown begins. when the countdown to boot normally finishes nothing happens. the computer is just frozen.

i try again.....when i get to this screen i am able to use the arrow keys to highlight the different options. the computer freezes once i hit enter to choose ANY of the listed options.

any help is appreciated. i took computer classes a few years ago but i don't recall right off what i should do to troubleshoot.Do they have Windows XP CD?reinstall/repair windows xpBearshare program information (after a little research):
Bearshare is a P2P application, and is adware. (See site report: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/bearshare.com ) (redirects your search queries to their site, instead of your default search)

It in itself is not a VIRUS. However, due to the nature of P2P clients, it may be possible that a virus was contracted while downloading something.

Solve : Windows XP Logon Failure?

Answer»

I can boot up to the Windows XP Welcome screen (THREE users) without problem.
When I then try to log on as any of the three users, the system LOADS the appropriate wallpaper, but nothing ELSE. After a short while it reverts to the Welcome screen and logs off. I then get back the Welcome screen with the three users.
I think I may have removed some files from start up using Symantec Systemworks.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this?I would try booting into safemode and using System Restore back to a point before you made the changes.I tried this, but no luck. When I log in as Administrator, the original problem is still there - I can't get a personal profile to load from the Welcome screen.
I've also loaded Last Known Good Configuration a few times, without success. Does this TAKE one step further back every time it is used?
I think the problem is that Windows itself is running properly, but cannot find any of my personal profiles.
I've also tried booting to DOS from the XP CD-ROM, but don't know enough to go any further with the commands available. I'd settle for being able to copy my data files to a memory stick, and then reformat the system. I do have the files backed up, but they are over a week old.
Boot to the XP CD and hit R at the 2nd screen to enter the Recovery Console...At the Command prompt type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
This will repair/replace any damaged or missing System files.
When it has finished remove the CD and re-boot and hopefully the system will be back to normal.Sorry, still no result. I got into the Recovery screen, which asked which Windows Installation would I like to log on to. I typed in 1, then pressed Enter when it asked for the Administrator password.
This got me to the C:\Windows> prompt, where I typed in sfc /scannow. The response was "The command is not recognised Type HELP for a list of SUPPORTED commands".
HELP produced a list, that did not include sfc.
I changed to the c: directory, but couldn't get the command to work there either.
What else could I try, please?fixboot
fixmbr

Do them one at a time and re-boot each time.

Solve : Device Manager contents suddenly gone missing?

Answer»

I have a Dell 9300 Inspiron with Windows XP SP2; sometime recently I attempted to CHECK a driver in the Device Manager and found it empty. Have searched for possible CAUSES and fixes for Empty Device Manager with no luck. Specifically, no Apropos bug found; also, Plug and Play automatic detection is checked. It may be a coincidence but at about the same time the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon went MISSING from the taskbar. System Restore has NEVER worked on this COMPUTER, and I understand that this may be because a quarantined malware file had been removed at some time in the past. Ugh. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!Travel to Dell's site and enter your service TAG #...
DLoad and re-install the listed drivers and re-boot and see if the condition improves.
Afterwards re-run all your malware scans and if there are still issues visit our Virus and Spyware section and follow the instructions for posting your logs.Try here:

Solve : The Dreaded No Signal?

Answer»

Well I am running an Asus K8V-X motherboard. 2 512MB kingston ddr2 ram.. Windows xp home edition sp1. And a 320g western digital hard drive. and a Ge force Fx 5200 Video card (or it is a 5300) i just recently changed it.

Here is my problem

Probably about 6 months ago, My computer out of the blue started acting up on me. What it would do is it would boot, normally, to right after the Windows XP LOADING bar comes up, not the log in screen. But what it would do is it would get to here then proceed to boot windows. Then it would freeze on the desktop while loading startup. I pressed my restart button, and every time i restarted it, it would get a little further in startup. After about 10 restarts using the restart button on the front of my tower, it would eventually load fully and I would be fine for that session on the computer.

The first time this happened, it lasted about 2 days that I had to start the computer in this way. The 3rd day I go to turn it on and Im greeted by this. After i see my motherboard screen and all that, then windows loading bar. My computer stopped loading, then I got a "No Signal" I tried different monitors and this was not the problem. I proceeded in buying a new hard drive and then it was all fine... till now again.

Same symptoms this time as well. I had to restart the computer 10+ times till windows totally loaded. A few hours later I went to go turn on the computer, and again, right after the windows loading screen, I'm talking about the black one, before desktop were to have loaded up, I got the famous "No Signal" I'm almost positive it is yet again the hard drive. What i did was I unplugged my hard drive and booted the computer, I got the no signal in the exact same spot. I listened to the beeps the computer made on startup as well.

Now I'm wondering, as this is the second time this has happened to me, could it be something more than the hard drive? Something internal, a video card, the motherboard? Or should i just buy another hard drive and hope for the best. Or is there a way I can fix this. It almost sounds like the hard drive is not getting POWER, although it does heat up on startup.

I would appreciate any help, and I will answer your questions about my pc as I will be checking back on this topic frequently taking your advice.

Thanks in advance.

Is your PSU rated to the wattage you need?

Have you CLEANED out the dust inside the machine recently?

Any major changes to hardware recently?

Is everything seated well in the mobo?

Have you got embedded graphics, or a video card?yes

I hate when people answer with one word to a two questioned SENTENCE...

Anyway, just double check your power button is plugged in correctly, especially if you've unplugged everything.

You should be able to find Mobo docs online, if you don't have them to hand.Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if the PSU is the culprit.
DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site to see if the HDD is the culprit.

DLoad and install SP2 by the way...
