Solve : Windows XP Service Pack 2... where????

Answer»

I know this is very old news... but I am having to update a computer running Windows XP Home that should have been updated with Service Pack 2 a long time ago, but wasn't. Trouble is, I cannot find where to get it anywhere. I go to the Microsoft site and they have you do Microsoft Update, promising you'll get Service Pack 2, but all that happened was that I got a whopping 64 updates installed (it took an hour) and... no Service Pack 2.

I even combed through the downloads section of the Microsoft site and couldn't find it ANYWHERE. I thought this was a super critical update? So where is it?

Then I found it on some other non-Microsoft update site, and spent an hour downloading/installing, except it hung during the final "Performing Cleanup" stage for an hour until I had to reboot it. The computer was completely screwed up after that and I had to do a System Restore. And so... still no Service Pack 2.

I can't wait 4-6 weeks to send away for the free CD from Microsoft, either.

Can somebody please tell me where to download a legit copy of Service Pack 2? I'm going crazy here, as I have people with devices that use software that won't work unless they have SP 2 installed...

thanks for any help

HereThanks, but that says...
"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A SMALLER, more APPROPRIATE download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP today. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you. "

I just NEED it for one computer. The link they suggest, again, leads to the same Windows Update that gave me 64 updates without including Service Pack 2.SP2CD Order Form

Small shipping fee applies...Assuming you're running windows xp english edition, below is a useful link. (i hope)

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.htmlThanks. That's the same download that screwed up my computer, though.

It may not have been related to that download per SE, but I really don't know what to do when it hangs at "Performing Cleanup." Some people on different forums said it was OK to go ahead and reboot anyway, but when I TRIED that, I got a dreaded blue screen and had to do System Restore.

Also, the computer in question is dialup to Internet only (lovely), so a 274 MB download would be way too big. I'll have to burn this to a CD somehow since I can't wait the 4-6 weeks for Microsoft to send me one.

I just wish there was an easier way of doing this... why doesn't the Windows Update install Service Pack 2 like it promises to?Quote from: JXY on January 03, 2008, 08:56:15 AM

Why would you recommend a third party site when it's available from MS ? ?

edgebert you can order the CD from my link above.Quote
edgebert you can order the CD from my link above.

edgebert just said he can't wait the 4-6 weeks for MS to send him the cd.you could try windows update online.

Solve : Windows won't start, please help!?

Answer» Last night I turned on my laptop and it loaded fine, apart from the internet. I restarted the computer (which usually fixes this problem)
However I found a screen that said 'windows did not shut down properly and there may be damage.' It then GAVE me a list of options including start normally or start in safe mode. Which ever I click it then takes me to the black windows xp load screen and then RESTARTS the computer and presents me with the same screen. I've tried pressing f8 and trying to boot in safe mode & all the others.

Any help would be appreciated as I desperatly need my laptop for Uni work!
Thanks
Out of all the options that the screen gives you there should be an option to START WINDWOS IN LAST KNOW GOOD CONFIG?does the laptop detect your hdd in bios?

Solve : Deleting Internet History/Files?

Answer»

XP, IE7.0.5730.11

I can't delete any IE history, files or cookies through IE. When I navigate to Temporary Internet Files through Windows Explorer it is hidden (i.e. doesn't show). No changes to View (hidden files) or Folder Options take affect (have ticked all files and subfolders option).

When I navigate to Local Settings\Temp Int Files through IE the files are shown, and I can delete them ... but History is still an issue.

I have Auto Updates on and everything should be functioning correctly.

Also have a firewall in place, and don't open dodgy looking emails.1. Run free online scan at: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Solve : Missing email files in Outlook Express?

Answer»

Hi all,

I seem to have lost all the items in two of my Outlook Express folders.
The inbox files are ok but a sub folder with about 40 items in it is now empty
My Sent Items folder is also empty.
All the other folders are ok.

I haven't deleted anything so where has everything disappeared to?

I recall a message box coming up last week asking if I wanted to compact files to save space and I clicked on ok.
I don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

Hope somebody can help me trace these files

Cheers Frank

Solve : My computer keeps restarting?

Answer»

I searched all over this forum for an answer.

My problem started a few weeks ago when my computer started acting funny by freezing up occasionally and sometimes restarting by itself. This coincided with the fact that the fan on my graphics card was starting to make funny noises like it was having trouble spinning up. I also got a new external firewire drive for christmas that my computer was having trouble formating. My computer would all of a sudden lose the firewire drive while formating and I would have to reboot to find it again. Finally I managed to GET the drive formatted, then while I was copying files to the drive, it lost the drive and I decided to reboot to see if the computer would be able to find the drive again. All of a sudden my computer doesn't boot up at all. It gets to the dos command, loads memory, gives me my 2 OPTIONS of Operating Systems (I have 2 XP operating systems on 2 physically seperate drives), when I select the OS it restarts the computer. It doesn't work on either of the Operating Systems, which leads me to belive that it is not a failed drive or a problem with the OS itself. I can get into the bios settings and it seems to recognize everything.

I get the feeling that it is my Graphics card. I have an AGP Nvidia 256mb card, that fits in with my ASUS A8V Motherboard. I don't have any new hardware installed. The reason I thikn it is the Graphics Board is because of the fan issues I was having and now the fan doesn't spin up at all when I try to boot up the system. my system will not START up in safe mode as well. If it was my graphics board then why can i see the dos startup and Bios settings? I am confused and I don't know what i should try to fix first. I was thinking of just buying a new graphics card and hoping for the BEST BUT I am beginning to think that it might be something else. Any sufggestions on how to trouble shoot this situation, I just don't know where to start. And I would prefer to figure this one out RATHER then bring it somewhere for repair. Any suggestions before I go out and buy a new Graphics card?

Solve : lost admin account XP?

Answer»

Somehow we have evidently managed to delete all administrtor accounts.
All that is left is a guest account with limited access. How can we restore
or replace an admin account?
CaptainWindows XP will not allow all admin accounts to be deleted. If it's the last admin account, it will tell you it can't be deleted.

Read this and see if it doesn't help clear things up:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/tips/advanced/adminaccount.mspxOK, that helps. We FOUND an admin logon on, but have no idea the name or password. Now what?
Is there a reset or a battery we can remove to reset and start over?
CaptainNo there is no battery reset for an Admin password.
How did you manage to forget it ? ?
Whose machine is this ? ?its ours. we had a problem with our son being on the computer without permission.
I don't use that computer as I have laptop.
CAs Quaxo stated the Admin account cannot be removed...
So it wouldn't matter what the boy did on it.
How did you lose the password ?

If it seems we're being overly skeptical here it's just the fact this INFO can be used maliciously.
The default admin account name is 'Administrator'. Unless you changed it (and most people don't) then you now just need to REMEMBER your password.

Did you set a password hint? You can CHECK that. (see attachment)

Other than that, there isn't much you can do. A password reset disk must be created from within the account it's meant to reset. The only other way to change passwords is to log on as an Admin and change them. Other than that, the only way to reformat and reinstall Windows, the final suggestion from Microsoft should the other SUGGESTIONS not help.

That's about all we can do for you.

Solve : having major issue; been at it since 9am, tired?

Answer»

Thanks to soybean and the other guy for your suggestions, I tried them both. The downloads were not compatible because I have a dsl connection and the free phone dialer downloads require that I log into a server.

These are VOIP services with rate charges. I ALREADY pay for digital phone service through cable which just converts my analog phone signal to digital then back to analog on the other side. Alas, no GO, back to square ONE. My question is cant my phone dialer program send out the call in the same analog signal as a REG phone can? why is this so complicated? NEED A SOLUTION.....Hi LanceG.
Since you basically still having the same PROBLEM I think we should stay in your original thread. This way anyone who wishes to chime in with suggestions knows the full story.

Solve : New Install XP Pro Partition??

Answer»

Hello, I am installing a new drive in my AMD Athalon, its a 250 Gig Seagate, and the install setup has come to a list of EXISTING partitions.

The C:Partition1 (Internal 20) [NTFS] , D: Partition1 (80GB) , E: Partition [Unknown].

The first partition called "internal 20", I think, is what the old drive was called. Do I need to change that? / or
Is that "(Internal 20)" what the computer recognizes as the new drive?
and
Should I just enter and let setup continue?
Thank you for your assistance Imnoguru. If you want Windows installed on the new 250G drive you need to disconnect all other HDD's and start again...Thank you for your reply Patio.
I'll TRY that and see what that brings.
Many thanks Imnoguru. You're more than Welcome...
Make sure when you re-introduce the old drive it is jumpered as slave or havoc may ensue...seem to me, you did not mention the operating system that was on internal 20" partition of existing drive, nor what was on the other formatted 80gig partition.

your install program will not list HD's/partitions, that ARE NOT INSTALLED. So you "added" a new Hard drive.

Ive put xppro on a pc athlon with a different existing os on the boot disk, and several other (physical) drives as well

what you want is not clear. starting from scratch is not necessarily your only roadThanks foggs for your reply.
In answer to your question, the operating system on the 20 gig was xp pro sp3. It got infected with an as yet unidentified virus and still is affected.
In trying to repair it with a reload of xp from the CD, I didnt get an option to repair, it just continued to install the O/S to the 20 gig., which was Ok and gave me a clean O/S to work with, but had its drawbacks.

I tried to repair the infected system again, with direction from knowledgable persons, unfortunately the disk installed a third O/S on that drive. Neither here nor there and of no consequence, but just consuming space on the drive.
Quote from: foggs on February 04, 2009, 07:07:53 PM

nor what was on the other formatted 80gig partition.
To clarify the 20 gig and 80 gig are not partitions they are actual Hard drives. The 80 wasnt formatted, and has some insignificant data on it.

There were only the one O/S on any of the drives (the infected win xp), the third drive is a 250 gig seagate.

Quote from: foggs on February 04, 2009, 07:07:53 PM
what you want is not clear. starting from scratch is not necessarily your only road
My question was actually in relation to the "title "Internal 20"", as to whether it was a problem and needed to be addressed, or again insignificant and easily bypassed. As it turned out it was of no consequence and the Win XP Pro Sp3 Cd installed satisfactorily on what was the third drive in the old build, but now is the C: Drive.

The 20 gig, (infected), is now the F: drive, so caution must be used in removing or accessing any old programms that I would like to keep and/or use.
I havent actually worked out how to protect myself from the potential of that virus being transfered to the 250 gig. Short of being resigned to the fact that it may happen and I am prepared (now) to format the lot and start again if necessary. (Hopefully that wont happen )

Patio, the old drive is jumpered correctly and all is working FINE. Thanks for your help. You can run all your malware scans on the 20G...
The only way you will cross infect the drives is if you are booted to the new install and you open a file on the 20G that has not been scanned for malware...I see Patio thanks.
I went through all the removal system with Evilfantasy on the 20 gig when it was the C: Drive. Yet even after concludeing the whole process, the popping and taskbar rising continued, regular as clockwork.
So I should go through the whole process again on the 20?
Just to make sure something hasnt been overlooked.
Can you recommend a good virus PROTECTION to use? I had AVG, my brother installed threatfire on it, there was also malwarebytes and Superantispyware.
Spybot and spybot search and destroy.
So many on there and yet it got me.
I'd really like a good one for this clean install.
Many thanks Imnoguru.
I still run AVG Free 8.0 although others here have switched to Avast as AVG had some issues whn 8.0 first came out...they have since been addressed and i have no problems with it.

Use only one or the other though.
The Rule of thumb is only 1 Anti-Virus and only 1 Firewall.

Spybot (disable Tea-Timer with this )
AdAware
MBAM

I also use WinPatrol...notifies you if anything is trying to add something as a running process or if it wants to be in the Startup group.

Update regularly and scan and you should be fine...

P.S. Evil is very good at what he does and if the 20G never got a clean bill of health you may want to just abandon it and format it altogether... if you do need certain files off of it i would scan them with whatever you have in your arsenal though.
Sometimes it's best to just cut your losses and move on.

This is also an excellent time to start considering a good backup strategy.
Glad everything worked out for you and we'll see you down the road....Good advice there Patio, thanks.
I had AVG before so thats where I'll go for virus program, and spybot has a good reputation so thats me up and running, (much learning too) thank you Patio,(and all others) that dedicate their time and expertise.
Imnoguru. It's been a pleasure getting you up and running...now on to trashing that new install....

Solve : os in 2 partitions?

Answer»

hi .my os is WINDOWS xp sp2
intel(R)
pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.50Ghz
256MB
harddrive is partitioned .os was previously in C:
trying to reinstall xp, by MISTAKE I put it in D:
now os is in 2 drives.I want to format the C: , having os in D:
when i tried using disk manager deleting C: is not enabled.and also it is shown as SYSTEM and NTFS.
Is it harmful if i format C:,and how can I format it.
thanks in advance If you format C: then your install on D: will not boot...
This is because no matter what partition you install Windows to it writes CERTAIN system files to the root of C: in ORDER for it to run properly.

Best bet is to back up your data ...re-install XP and have it delete/create the C: partition...
You can then SAFELY delete the install on D:.

Good Luck.

Solve : Batch File setting Attributes?

Answer»

I'm not sure iv asked this correctly before because others never give the right answer(Even Google couldn't find it LOL).

I'm wondering if a batch file can change the attribute(Read-only, HIDDEN and, Archive) of a file, and if so what is the command.

I'm trying WRITE a batch file that can set a normal file to a hidden attribute.

This is what i have so far:

" start view.exe /shtml view.html "

Is there a way to ADD a command so it saves/changes it to a hidden attribute? Or write another batch to would run after that and change it to Hidden attribute.

-Thanks in advance
TutsuoWelcome to the CH forums.

Use the ATTRIB command to set attributes. Enter ATTRIB/? in the command line to view parameters.

Good lucki dont understand... so

" start view.exe /shtml attrib/hidden view.html "

?Quote

start view.exe

Is view a Windows program? It is not in my XP system.
Why would you need to make the file hidden? If it is in a system area the average user is not going to see it. And if he is a super user he will find it anyway.
the program is run from a usb flash drive. . .
I don't understand either.... Here are the parameters (switches) for the Attrib command...
Quote
Displays or changes file attributes.

ATTRIB [+R | -R] [+A | -A ] [+S | -S] [+H | -H] [drive:][path][filename]
[/S [/D]]

+ Sets an attribute.
- Clears an attribute.
R Read-only file attribute.
A Archive file attribute.
S System file attribute.
H Hidden file attribute.
[drive:][path][filename]
Specifies a file or files for attrib to process.
/S Processes matching files in the current folder
and all subfolders.
/D Processes folders as well.

To hide a file use

ATTRIB +H DRIVE\PATH\FILENAME

Example:
attrib +h F:\view.exe

or

attrib +h f:\idontknow\whodoes.exe

Hmm ill try that out.

Whenever I re start my pc right after it says Installing windows a Black sceen comes up for 2 SECONDS and says in the top left coner
Invaled Boot ini File

The message displayed is probably
Quote
Invalid Boot.ini file
BOOTING from c:\Windows\

Fact is Boot.ini is not required when booting, NTLDR will automatically boot from C:\Windows\ by default. This is NOT the default seen in Boot.ini, NTLDR is programmed to do this if Boot.ini is missing.

In W2K NTLDR will automatically boot from C:\Winnt\ if Boot.ini is missing.

It seems likely that with all your playing around your Boot.ini file has been EITHER deleted or renamed.

The only drawback is that when Boot.ini is missing the OS menu is not displayed so another OS cannot be selected in a multi-booting environment.

Answer, rebuild your Boot.ini file - If you are not in a multi-booting environment I suggest the following:

Quote
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating SYSTEMS]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="WINDOWS XP" /fastdetec/noexecute=optin

I whent to msconfig window to see if I can click on the Tab that says Boot.ini
And it is not at the Top of the window how can I Export my Boot.ini File so I can Past it here for you to see it and help me??
Code: [Select]1. Open Local Disk C: in Explorer
2. Click on (a) Tools
(b) Folder Options
(c) View
3. Bullet Show hidden files and folders
4. Untick Hide protected operating system files
5. Click Apply
6. Click OK OK
You will now be able to open Boot.ini using Notepad then Copy/Paste the Boot.ini file.

I can't seem to find my Boot.ini Tab in msconfig Window it is not there.

So that must be why I get the Massage Invaled Boot.ini File when I restart my computer.

But after that Massage then it goes right to the Logon Screen and I Logon and it goes to Desktop.

I was thinking about doing something and I don't know if this would be bad.
I backedup my Boot.ini File to a Floppy alng with NTLdr File and oneother System File.

What if I jus copy and past the Boot.ini File from my Floppy to my C:

Would this fix it not being in the msconfig Windo and all that???

Solve : i think I have an intruder?

Answer»

It is it possible for an intruder to be hiding in my computer? My ex-boyfriend who is a genius 1computer engineer and his goal in life is to sabotage my life, I believe he somehow could be in my computer. Am I being paranoid or is it possible? There are just too many weird things happening like...constantly new files appearing from nowhere....viewed websites that I have not been near...new hardware...FONTS going different SIZES...etc. Also, I know I don't belong to a domain, but sometimes it appears as though I am! I am not that computer smart but I am not a dummy. Please help me!Reformat and REINSTALL. That's the only way to know nothing of the nature he might have installed is hiding.

Or if you know someone who can look for something your ex has put there to spy on you then have them look, then report your ex to the police if anything is found. It might seem like a game to him but it's actually ILLEGAL.

Good luck! Also: how do you access the Internet? My honest reply is to just stop using that computer.

If you need a computer, go buy a used one that has a warranty.
That is quick and easy. The keyboard, mouse and monitor are all OK to use again. You just need a new bx, which you can get for a little over $100 plus shipping.

Solve : Replicating Files?

Answer»
I was trying to save my Outlook Express address book to a desktop folder, and by some error, it went to the desktop along with all of my CURRENT emails. These APPEAR as email and address icons all over the desktop. I've tried to delete in various ways, but they re-generate with copies, and copies of copies, and so on. After I clear the desktop and restart the computer, they are back again!.

I'd really appreciate some advice on how to remove and stop them, and how to prevent this kind of thing (endless copies) from happening again.

I'm using XP (sp3).
Thanks!Use System Restore to DAY when all was well.

start, ALL Programs, Accessories, System Tools, CLICK on System Restore.

or

Sick of the two-step process of deleting objects and then having to empty the Recycling bin? Highlight the item you want to get rid of and Shift + Delete. One step! Just be careful, because it's really gone!

RE your proposal---
Use System Restore to day when all was well.
start, ALL Programs, Accessories, System Tools, click on System Restore.

I did this, restoring to yesterday, and it DID NOT work.
The system restore apparently keeps all saved files, and these things filling my desktop, which I didn't create or want, are considered as saved.
When the system booted up again, they were and are still there.

Thanks for trying.
Try going back a few days before the problem

Solve : Hard Drive Has Red X On It?

using windows 7 my second hard drive shows up and works but has an red x on it I have went to computer mang. then storage to assign a new drive letter but still nothing.please helpIs it your main computer, or some test computer?
Win 7 is only in beta stages.main computer
As I said, Win 7 is in beta stages, and it should NEVER be installed on main machine.
We're not here to solve beta programs issues.Broni is right here...if you are relying on a BETA OS as a primary machine you are taking risks...
As to the red X drive what was on it and what OS was it being used with ? ?500 gb no OS system on this hard drive, drive is blank
A red (X) indicates a disabled device. A disabled device is a device that is physically present in the computer, consuming resources, but does not have a protected-mode driver loaded.

they mite not have it setup to do two drives yet. Remember its only in beta form at the moment.Has it been FORMATTED yet ? ?
Some new drives are not.

How does disk management report it when you right clik it and select properties ? ?

This is a notoriously bad request for HELP, you provide us with absolutely nothing but the NAME of the program that doesn't work for you!

Here's what I want to know:
-Your operating system
-How you installed OSQL in the first place (MSDN SQL Server 2008??)

Thanks.

ok... here's the thing..

i have a windows xp OS...

i need to use the command "osql.exe"
but somehow this always appears:
"'osql.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

see now??Thank you.

I understand your problem, but I need to understand how you got there in order to fix it.

OSQL is not included with Windows XP by DEFAULT, the only time I have run across it is when installing SQL Server or similar software development packages. Are you aware of this?

If so, please tell me what program you are trying to install to use OSQL.ooh... now i get it...
i thought it was built in windows xp...

could you tell me how to install it in my pc?
Sure!

Visit this LINK: http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/default.aspx

After installing, your command prompt should respond to the osql command.

Solve : Opening Power Point email attachment?

Answer»

I have both MS Power Point and Corel Presentations on my computer. When I receive a .pps document (Power Point) as an attachment, my computer defaults to Presentations & converts it. It usually takes a while for the conversion & often doesn't do it at all. I would LIKE to know where to find the setting to make .pps attachments open in Power Point rather than in Presentations.Save the attachment to your desk top or some where on your comp that you can find it. Right click on the file and select "open with" and select power point to open the program.
to mroilfield: your reply was helpful. I saved the attachment instead of opening it from my email program. Then I had to open Power Point first to retrieve what I had saved. It WORKED, but there still should be a way for the email attachment to default to open in PP rather than taking all those steps. Thanks much.Using Windows Explorer, find a .ppt file, right click on it and select Open With. NEXT, select Choose Program. PowerPoint should appear in a list of Programs. Select it and check the box at the bottom for "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Click OK to close that panel.

Now, open you email program and try opening a .ppt attachment DIRECTLY from your email program. Does it work?to soybean: Now I see what the problem was. Power Point wasn't listed for some reason under "Choose program". I clicked on "BROWSE" & added MS Power Point & then checked the box "always use". This should solve the matter. Thank you. What a great site this is! Such prompt & helpful replies!

Solve : Help with .net framework 3.0?

Answer»

OK, so I'm trying to get the .net framework 3.0 up and running (specifically to satisfy a prerequisite for "Games for Windows LIVE"). Unfortunately, it fails every time when attempting to install "Microsoft Communication Foundation" (error code 1603).

This doesn't MAKE a whole lot of sense considering the usual nature of a 1603.

So, anyone have any CLUE about what I might be able to do here? Microsoft's "Knowledge Base" actually had an article on this, but gave an explanation that didn't fit my situation (according to them, it's because of corrupted previous .net framework installations, which I disproved). Some think that .net framework is a waste of your youth.
Some time ago Microsoft could sell their DEVELOPMENT tools.
Now they hare to give them away.

No, this is not sarcasm. It reflects the feelings of people who
have used Microsoft tools for many years.Personally, I DO hate dealing with it. And were it not necessary, I wouldn't bother.
Well, Ok, GFWL isn't exactly necessary, but I want it up and running. The only problem is this .net framework.

Judging by the error code, it seems like there's a file the installer isn't allowed access to (for whatever reason). I just can't tell what need to do about it... Quote from: ZeroSignal on February 06, 2009, 12:35:47 AM

Well, not overall, but for my situation. I guess I phrased that poorly.

I did everything Microsoft recommended to CORRECT the situation (including using the file patio linked), but it made no difference. It just continues to give me the same error. I even dug up a program that cleans ALL versions of .net framework from the machine (every last trace), for a fresh install, but STILL no luck.

Computer restarting without warning
« on: February 03, 2009, 03:43:40 AM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
I have a windows XP Pro SP3 with AMD Sampron Processor 2800 and 1Gb ram.

For no apparent reason it resets and reboots by itself. I can be in the middle of writing a document, going to a new web page or doing nothing. I run this machine 24hrs and it may be resetting at 2:00am, 5:00am, not being used or during the day, not being used.

I don't recall installing a new program when it started, but not sure when it started. Initially, I noticed it resetting at around 2:00am. I didn't notice it resetting again for weeks. But now, it does it MAYBE twice a day.

Any ideas?

Solve : Game crashing--Black & White 2=Physical mem. dump?

Answer»

Here's the lowdown: Using an old work computer with Win2k Pro, I scavenged a CD-RW from yet another used work comp so I could install Black & White 2. Using the diagnostic TOOL that came with, I found that the comp had met the requirements (XP/2000 OS, 512 sys. mem., 1.6 Ghz processor, DirectX 9, and 64 display) having 1024 sys. mem, 3191.9 processor speed (pentium4), DX 9, and 128 display memory. Graphics card being a GeForce FX 5200. So, happily I installed and stated... shows an island K? but the water surrounding is flat green (pixel shading?--new graphics card?) and the game continues without a hiccup till a tutorial with animated creatures. While explaining, the second creature glitches out of existence leaving only his poor eyeballs behind floating in the air helpless staring at me as if yearning for help lol anyway the game keeps goin' for, oh, about 4 secs and then the third creature follows suit and it freezes then I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and get a "blue screen of death" stating that its performing a physical memory dump.......looking for a little guidance. First off what is "Phys. memory" and what is the problem? Do I need more RAM? Hard DRIVE (same thing right)? Free up space? New card? General help?lol I' ready to absorb as much info as you can secrete....eager to learn.

*NOTE: tried this several times with 100% consistant results. The demo doesn't seem to have the same problem as in-game. Didn't run or intall slowly and had no other symptoms except the most recent time when I tried it after 2 de-frags (where learned I only there was only 5k MB free outta 39k--game took 3gigs)there was some choppiness in the intro followed by an extended freeze time. I also turned the graphics settings all the way down on the game.

Also, what can I do to bring this thing up to DATE (cheaply) and get me through the next 2-3 years with minimal updates (for cost reasons)

This is it.....then reboots itself

Solve : Windows XP Media Center?

Answer» EVERYTIME I try to do something that requires a media player, I get a box that pops up asking me to install WINDOWS Media Player 10. I have ANOTHER media player I like better, and it's preventing me from using it. How do I remove it? I've done SEARCHES all over my computer trying to find it, but I can't.I would configure the file association to "always open" with the alternate player. You can right click on the file, and go to open with, then choose program, then select the player from the list and check the box for "always open with this" for the player.

That should take care of it unless there are any certificates that are declaring Windows Media Player on launch, such as copyright material or material that has to confirm licensing with a server before playing.

Solve : Windows 7 restore watermark?

Answer»

I have running windows beta build 7000 and i have removed watermark but now compatibility mode does not work. How can I restore watermark? I don't have a system restore point.Did you edit the registry to do this?

I'd save data and rebuild and restore data back as a quick solution if this has to be fixed right away. Otherwise we can help here plug away to a solution hopefully.Hello.

To remove the watermark from Windows 7 beta builds, you must USE a resource editor to 'patch' a system file. I am assuming that since you don't know what file to edit to get it back, you used a third party patcher

Luckily, most patchers make a backup of the system file edited.

First look for a backup in %systemdrive%\User32Backup\ (ex. C:\User32Backup\)
You should be looking for 'user32.dll.mui'
If that folder does not exist CHECK in %windir%\System32\en-US\ (ex. C:\WINDOWS\System32\en-US\)
You should be looking for 'user32.dll.mui.bak'

If you FIND EITHER of those files, simply replace the 'user32.dll.mui' file that is currently in %windir%\System32\en-US\ with one of the backup copies, restart, and report back here.

Thanks and good luck.

Solve : if a laptop cant read?

Answer»

data from another hard drive that is plugged in via a usb adapter, does it mean the EXTERNAL hard drive is damaged?Any error message What OS is it? What File system is on the laptop system drive? The Ext HD? does it "see" the ext HD? is it listed in MyComputer when attached? Can you navigate to the Ext HD? What data file type exactly, is it you are trying to see/read/copy/execute?

How can anyone assist if you leave pertinent info out when asking?Have you TRIED to PLUG it into another computer? Its a NTFS file system on the ext drive that had Win XP on it. It is being connected to a laptop that is winXP, NTFS file system.
There is no error message or anything, the icon in the status bar shows up indicating a USB device has been plugged in and that noise is heard of a device being plugged in. After that the DISK starts spinning, or at least it sounds like it is, but nothing is visible in my computer.
Im trying to copy all the files over minus the OS system files, because I want to do a fresh install of the OS.
I dont see the Disk drive when I hook it up to another computer either, so is this an indication the disk drive is kaput? If it were though, then why WOULD it make noises like its spinning.
Could be the jumper.

What happens when you put the hard drive back into the original machine?

You're using an enclosure, right?

Solve : Two computer names now and can't access one :(?

Answer»

Okay, so I have an HP with XP on it. The other night I somehow got an HP recover screen when I was going to reboot. I should have just cancelled THOUGH, but since I had never seen it and completely was not paying any attention to what I was doing I just clicked OK and it went through the process of essentially giving me an entire new computer name and OS. It was like the computer was brand new again. I gave it a computer name and everything. What's strange is, it didn't WIPE everything off the hard drive. I still see files and can access files that are directly on the C drive. In Windows Explorer, when it comes to users, I can drill into the new HP_Administrator's folder and see all the system folders and everything that comes with that. However, I can see the old HP_Administrator's folder, but can't drill down on it at all. It just tells me it's not accessible. I am not sure if there is still SOMETHING there or not. I tried to restore to a previous date, but since it's reading off of the new computer name and admin it can only restore back to the time the new computer name and admin were established. Does anybody know how I can get back to the old computer name if it's even possible? Thanks!!!!!How to Take Ownership of Files/Folders in XP

Worth a shot...as far as the computer name problem, that ones easy.

Solve : My log-in box disappeared.?

Answer»

Alright, so I was using a program that edits the login page of Windows. When I was messing around with it, I accidentally got rid of the login box (where you type your password when you're logging in).

The program was called Logon Studio, and there's nothing WRONG with it, I just accidentally got rid of the login box when I was playing with one of the settings.

Is there any way I can log in without clicking on the box (because it's not there)? Or get rid of the program without logging in?

I tried safe mode and all this, and it just brings me to the login page, where I can't log in to Windows anyway. I'm using Windows XP, and I'm posting this from a different COMPUTER because I can't log in to my normal one at all.

Help? THANK you.Quote

This makes no sense...you said the login box dissappeared because of this program you were using...
But safemode brings up the login box and YET you can't login ? ?
I think there's more to this story we haven't learned yet.
Your login should work in safemode...
Login in safemode and remove the frilly app that is causing the issue. The program changes the login screen. When I opened safe mode, the changed login screen comes up and the login box is still not there.Format and start over.
I never give this advice but all the clues you have provided are contradictory so try that.

Solve : size of RAM?

Answer»

hi,
is the size of RAM involving the size of virtual memory?
if not, how we can predict the size of ram by address field in inst. where this field is involving the virtual address?

ID appreciate your replyRam is physical IC chips....it can neither increase or decrease.
It's what it is..... the AMOUNT that's plugged into the motherboard.

Virtual memory is your Pagefile..... an area on your hard drive set aside for data storage, for your CPU chip....to SUPPLEMENT physical RAM.

OK?

Shadow Howdy Shadow...
Happy New Year ! !hi,
no, not okay.

no one did understand me although I was too clear .
well, all what you said I know it.

one of the ways to know the size of RAM is the address field of inst.
ex.: if the address field =10 bit
then the size of RAM =2^10. by these 10 bits in address field , cpu should access for all ADDRESSES (virtual and physical).
this information was documented in all references.
my inquiry is: how cpu can access to all virtual addresses by only 10 bits which is representing the size of RAM only?

what is the timely time for you to chat?please , consider the timing.

thanks in ADVANCE

heh.

3GB max. have you any idea how big hard drives were back then? Oh wait- they didn't exist in a practically marketable form.

Your second "sentence" which I'm assuming is just that- it's another complete thought, which ideally would be separated by a PERIOD from preceding and subsequent thoughts (each of which is known colloquially as a "sentence", doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

While you could easily switch between 1.0, 2.0, and 3.1 using the DOS prompt, I have a feeling your MAIN OS is a far newer version of windows, making switching between your versions a lot more complicated then simply shelling out to DOS.

On the other hand- windows 1,2, and 3 can be run either in an emulator, or, of you're lucky, as DOS applications under newer versions of windows.

Follow Dusty's advice, but be warned- bids for old software can get very high, (FAR more then it's worth) and your more then likely be dissapointed with it anyway.Be careful not to give any advice that would lead to piracy. EARLY versions of Windows are still Microsoft copyright products.

Except you can't. The early Windows versions that ran on top of MS-DOS need different MS-DOS versions

1.01, 1.03, 1.04 MS-DOS version 2.0
2.03 MS-DOS version 3.0
2.10 MS-DOS version 3.0 or later
3.0, 3.00a, 3.10, 3.11, MS-DOS 3.1 or higher

So if you are running any Windows version 1 you can't run version 2 or later, if you're running Windows 2.03 you can't run any version 1 or any version 3.

2.10 MS-DOS version 3.0 or later
3.0, 3.00a, 3.10, 3.11, MS-DOS 3.1 or higher

So if you are running any Windows version 1 you can't run version 2 or later, if you're running Windows 2.03 you can't run any version 1 or any version 3.

so DOS was NOT backward compatible? If I had DOS 4 I couldn't run
anything that ran under DOS 2???

Didn't know that...strange....

OK found my answer...guess that's why stuff like DOSBox and others came about...cause I found instances where MS Windows 1.0 was run with DOS 5.0
and a few "extras"...extra routines/patches/etc.

so thanks...learn something every day...!!Quote from: fgdn17 on January 15, 2009, 04:03:11 PM

Except you can't. The early Windows versions that ran on top of MS-DOS need different MS-DOS versions

1.01, 1.03, 1.04 MS-DOS version 2.0
2.03 MS-DOS version 3.0
2.10 MS-DOS version 3.0 or later

Nope. I think all the interrupt vectors were changed; and also interupt vectors added for hard drive usage, which DOS 2 didn't support. (or 1.2MB 5 1/4" floppies or any 3 1/2" floppies.

Half the DOS 4 releases were incompatible with each other. Imagine the fun when people upgraded to a slightly newer version of DOS 4, only to now discover their Hard drives corrupted. (MS changed how they handled Hard Drives, I believe)

DID IT LOOK LIKE THIS?

yes... that would be either windows 1 or windows 286.

Neither of which will run on post DOS 2 machines. (with the possible exception of DOS 3 or SPECIAL handling with SETVER)

What email service? When did it start? What browser?

Microsoft Outlook...A while ago (Month+)...Broswer? None?Quote from: SOYBEAN on January 14, 2009, 08:36:45 AM
Are you using the Outlook message editor or Word for email messages?

Microsoft Outlook is the email service.Outlook is an email client, not an email service. Your email service is either your ISP or an independent email service, such as a free Gmail account from Google.

Are you using the Outlook message editor or Word for email messages?
To check, go to Tools, Options, Mail Format (tab), and see whether one of the check boxes under Message format is marked. Those are two options there, both of which USE Word as your email message editor.

Solve : [Q] Question about group policies on network...?

Answer»

Okay, here goes...

At work, all our machines are HOOKED into our server and domain controller. Now, what I am trying to do is make it to where users cannot install software, but the software already installed can update. Is this SETUP through the domain controller, or the local machine? I ask because while here at our main location we are all networked to our server and domain controller, at our other locations they are not. If it is handled on the local machine, even for NETWORK user profiles, then I can set that up through a slipstreamed install disk via nlite and save myself a ton of hassle with the 20+ machines I have to setup over the NEXT several weeks. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid QUESTION, but my server kung-fu is pretty weak. Any help is greatly appreciated.BUMP

Solve : Date and time not set in bios??

Answer»

How do I set date and time in bios? I replaced the battery, and now I can't set the time and date??
I have a Dell with windows XP.
My HDD died, so I have on order a new hdd. Would the hdd being dead cause the date and time to not be set in bios?

Thanks in advance

What do you mean? There is no date, and time entry in BIOS, or what?In the setup screen, its says Date and Time not set....What setup?Does your setup screen look like this?

Just type in the correct time and dateBumpkin, just in case your computer doesn't get to the screen, it's the BIOS Setup.Sorry, I guess this is the post screen, it shows Dell logo and other things about the computer, before I installed the battery, it showed that it was low. It is the only screen my computer will go to.
I did go into the bios, but it won't let me change it, I could highlight the numbers, but I couldn't change them.
Thanks for the replys.Once highlighted, did you try pressing either the Right and Left arrow keys or the Up and Down arrow keys?
A couple of things aren't CLEAR . Does the OS load to the point where
everything is on the desktop ? If so, are you seeing any time in the
Systray [exteme rt ..task bar]?
If so , double click on same and set the time..may force the bios to ACCEPT it.The BIOS will never accept the time from an OS...it doesn't work that way.Quote from: patio on January 14, 2009, 08:12:46 AM

Are you quite sure about that, Patio?

Yes I tried the up and down also left and right keys, but it wouldn't let me change anything.
No I can't get into windows, my hdd is dead, I am waiting to get a new one. On this screen it also showed low battery, and it shows what kind of computer. I guess it is like a splash screen for Dell. I would copy and paste, but no way I can get anywhere but this one screen.
Thanks to all Quote from: Dias de verano on January 14, 2009, 11:04:57 AM

Please explain, for example, how it is that in October, after Windows adjusted the system clock because of the end of Summer Time, the BIOS clock was right when I booted up the next day? If you are correct, that time changes made in the OS cannot affect the BIOS clock, then that should not have happened.Never considered Daylight Savings Time...
Just going on years of replacing CMOS batteries...i always had to set the Time manually even if the machine was powered up a few times.
Thanx for the heads up !

Why would your Documents need digital signatures ? ?CIA, M16, KGB...KGB no more....Федера́льная слу́жба безопа́сности Росси́йской Федера́ции (ФСБ России) = FSBahh, but that's why the documents must be KEPT secret.

Solve : Corrupt files?

Answer» HI Every one

HELP is the cry.

I run a P4 with XP SP2, I have 2 x 40 gig HDD, the 2nd is just formated in fat 32.
I removed my second drive to scan another, when i reconnected my drive it took TIME booting up.
i then got a message saying my drive (e & f) it reads my drive as fat 32, but then it says it cannot recognised the windows file.
I cannot read any data on it. How can it be repaired, as there are files I need which haven't yet been backed up.

I've tried REINSTALLING xp, thinking it might correct the problem, when i did this, it told me it could not read some files, I've never had this problem before. should I reformat my drive C. Is there some file corrupt in the OPERATING system. can this be repaired also.

Regards

P
I thought FAT32 only worked with less than 32GB? That might add to the problem. Quote

FAT32 works up to 2TB.

I cannot recall the exact size but at some size XP refuses to format a drive as Fat32 and insists on NTFS.
