http://askthegeek.kennyhart.com/2005/11/my-computer-wont-shut-down.html

You can SAFELY ignore the above advice...

sam when you say you press shutdown do you MEAN in the Shut down Box itself ? ?
What does it say in the drop down box DIRECTLY above the shutdown box ? ?
Down arrow changes the choices...

Also how long have you WAITED for it to shutdown before giving up ? ?

Any new Hardware or Software installed recently ? ?

Solve : System incompatible with a game??

Answer»

The other day, I found a very OLD video game that I used to play when I was younger, back when everyone was using Windows 95. Trying my luck, I tried to install it, but I GOT an error message that said:

16-bit MS DOS Subsystem

D:\INSTALL.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running Ms-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'CLOSE' to terminate the application.

The game requires:

486DX or higher
DOS 5.0 or Windows 95
8MB/16MB of RAM
SVGA card
etc etc.

I'm using Windows XP of course. I'm pretty much TECHNOLOGICALLY tarded, but can anyone tell me if there is still hope of playing this thing again or should I give up hope?? I hope this isn't in the wrong PLACE either.

Thank you very much = =|||

I've not tried to run a dos game on XP for a good few years now, but from what I remember, trying to get them to run was close to impossible and when they did it didn't run properly.

May have just been me of course, but I stopped even trying after a while.Try DOSBOX

Solve : What do is ment by Windows Optimization ??

Answer»

What do is ment by Windows Optimization ?
What do is ment by Clean Boot ? Google IT ?!!?!?

Clean boot - A clean boot is a troubleshooting TECHNIQUE that allows you to GET the computer up and running so that you can perform diagnostic tests to DETERMINE which elements of the normal boot process are causing problems.

Windows Optimization - I DON"T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN, just google search itIt's not that complex...it means shutting down completely and waiting 2 minutes as opposed to just re-starting the machine. If we go by M$ definition of "Clean Boot", read here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Windows optimization apply to NUMBER of actions. It all depends on personal needs.
Among others, it'd be: uninstalling unnecessary programs, play with startups, virtual memory, etc., but also doing some cleaning procedures: cleaning temp files, running defrag.
In GENERAL, bringing Windows to a state where there is nothing unneeded running, or staying on your hard drive. Is that the info you were after?

Solve : Problem seems trivial but no one seems to know what to do.?

Answer»

Whenever I watch a video or play a game it is very dark and hard to see.

I can turn up the gamma in my nivida control panel but that makes everything way to bright.

I tried ajusting the monitor brightness but that did nothing.

I have looked around on search engines but I cannot find any solutions.

Ive tried ajusting every setting, switch, ect. I could find but nothing is working.

This is so frustrating. I tried installing new drivers and getting the windows genuine advantage but the problem still persists.

Does anyone have any idea on what to do?

Please help thanks in advance.

P.S If you think you MIGHT even know somthing simple that might WORK please say so it might be somthing I havent tried.

What OS is this?
Does this only happen while playing a game or is the monitor always dark?Windows xp.

Id say its always dark but I really notice it while watching media and playing games. What kind of monitor is it (CRT or LCD) and how old is it?
Have you tried another monitor?Im not sure how do I find out?

What does CRT and LCD mean?

Its a pretty new monitor.Go to freewarefiles.com and download PC Wizard 2008; it will give you all of the CURRENT information about your system and you can also check individual components.CRT is the old tube monitors, they stick out far at the back.
http://www.komputerkrazy.com/mmKK3/Images/17crt.jpg

LCD's are the new flat-panel monitors, they are thin.
http://www.techfresh.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/benq-world-fastest-lcd-monitor.jpgIts an old tube monitor.Try DEGAUSSING the monitor. It's usually somewhere in the monitor's menus. You can find where it is in the manual.I found it in the monitor menue but it did nothing.

What does degauss mean?

Are there any brightness settings or anything like that I should check out?If you try another monitor and the problem is still there, it's probably your video card.Im pretty sure its not the monitor.

What should I do about my video card?

Im having trouble finding geforce 2 drivers.this is the sight for ge force drivers

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

also as you have a crt monitor it will have some of its display properties of its own there will be EITHER knobs or more likely buttons to acess these tools mess around with them they are actually attached to the monitor the degausse tool will make your screen go funny if you activate it properly it is ok though as it will return to normal very quickly

bartrobTo get the drivers follow that link and under "product type" you need to select "legacy". How old is this computer? the GeForce 2 series is VERY old.Im pretty sure Ive downloaded these before but Ill try again.

Solve : Free graphics / art package to add text captions to JPEG photos (2848 x 2134)?

Answer»

Hi All,

Can ANYONE recommend a FREE graphics / ART software package to add text captions or titles to large JPEG photos (2848 x 2134).

The software needs to be installed on a laptop which does Not have Internet access, therefore the software must run WITHOUT needing on-line registrations.

(I will be able to download the setup files using another PC, and then one-time transfer the setup files to the laptop.)

I have already tried the following SEVEN packages, and NONE of them seem to do the job, either because they can't add text to a JPEG, or because they need on-line registration.

* Corel_PaintShopPro1000_EN_TBYB_TrialESD .exe (111143864 byte setup FILE)
* FSS_PH60.exe (20409656 byte setup file)
* MicroPhotoEd.exe (844877 byte setup file)
* PicasaWeb-Current-Setup.exe (6219320 byte setup file)
* PSPP12_Corel_TBYB_EN_IE_FR_DE_ES_IT_NL_ ESD.exe (341891800 byte setup file)
* tuxpaint-0.9.17-win32-installer.exe (8137311 byte setup file)
* XaraXtreme3_2DL.exe (48764288 byte setup file)

Thanks,
JamesTry Irfanview. It might be a couple of degrees less than perfect but it should do what you want. Also click software an utiliteis in my sig. You might come up with something there.let us know if that is what you wanted

Solve : windows Xp sp2 desktop loads then reloads then goes blank?

Answer»

MY pc which has been doing quite well lately decided to freak out LOL
I had installed Halo CE and it was running well and then it started crashing my desktop wanting me to recover it . I even went and changed my display settings to none so that I could run an anti virus and spyware program to check for bugs but it would not let me. I went to safe mode and it did the same thing. I can't get it to stop loading and reloading so that I can scan it.
I did a restore and it does the same thing
I repaired my windows xp and it still does the same thing
I disabled the restart and it still does the same thing
I ran it as Last Good Configuration and it still does the same thing

OK.. I'm out of ideas and I have been researching all morning

so PLease can someone help me or DIRECT me to where I can get help ...
Did you uninstall Halo?I would like to do that but it will not stay loaded long enough for me to do anything to it....Maybe Halo install, and your problem are just a coincidence...Maybe you have some hardware issue.
First, I'd try to reseat video card (if you have separate video card), and memory sticks. If you have more then one RAM modules, try them one-by-one.Ok! I have done more researching and it seems my active desktop keeps crashing due to a script error. I found a website that provides the script to fix this (Microsoft VBS) but I do not know how to or where to put the vbs....

MY desktop icons are missing and so is my TASK bar ...If you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL will Task manager pop-up?Yes I had to use it to check some things on my pc last night.
My desktop even stayed up for a while last night but the active desktop was messed up....
In Task Manager, click on Run button, type in explorer, and hit Enter.BTW...did you try to reseat video card, and RAM?Quote from: Broni on November 08, 2007, 12:15:22 PM

In Task Manager, click on Run button, type in explorer, and hit Enter.

I did that last night and it popped up them vanished again...Quote from: Broni on November 08, 2007, 12:16:30 PM
BTW...did you try to reseat video card, and RAM?

Yes and they were fine.....

I guess, clean reinstall may be your only option. Do you have a lot of data to loose? Any backups?Update:
Ok It was not a software, windows problem..it was actually a very nasty trojan called Virtumonde.
This thing multiplied and caused so much havoc in my pc ..I had to literally chase it down to kill it.
Anyway.. I realized this when I was just doing a virus scan from task manager and AntiVir went nuts when it got to my Windows/fonts folder. It started showing some really strange stuff that I had never seen before. I went to the folder and lo and behold there was NOTHING there. I had barely put my cursor on the file when it showed me a little of what the file contained and it was 3 gbs !!
I saw something called a.zip and I did a search for it and opened it and there was a file that I did not have there before so I tried to delete it and BOOM! my computer shut down so ...hmmm ok now that must be what is making my pc miserable ...
I ran all of my viruswares one by one and none found it but Antivir and it keep asking me what I wanted to do with it.. I tried everything and it had locked the file from me.!! ARGHH
OK! its 3 am and I am not giving up so ... I download all those Vundo fix scanners and NOTHING worked so I shut off my pc and went to BED ...
The next day I got up and went back to my Antivir and scanned and it went nuts.
It found all the viruses that had been spawned from that trojan and it was busy deleting them one by one.. (Now this program beeps everytime it finds something so my house was full of beeping for at least an hour.)
Finally I had an idea to look up how to get rid of the virus...
I downloaded Trojan Remover and it GOT IT!!
Finally and all of the sudden my desktop was back to normal.
I scanned some more and eliminated more viruses and now my PC is locked down with Zone alarm and virus free...
just wanted to share this in case anyone has the same problems I had!

Thanks for The Great help!! Broni!!!
I didn't help that much...LOL
I'm happy, though, you're back in business.
I guess, it wouldn't hurt, if you posted your HijackThis log.

Solve : BSOD + No safemode = Problems.?

Answer»

I recently installed a new game, Rising Force.

And right after it was done INSTALLING, my comptuer went to a blue screen. Running Windows XP Media Center, SP2, up to date also. My computer model is DELL XPS 400. It says something along the lines of, “Something drive_not_equal_to_or_less”, and I haven't UPDATED my videocard drivers because they work fine..

But now, when I reboot..I keep getting that blue screen.

I try starting in safe mode to no avail, as it gets stuck on loading the file 'MUP.sys'. Will a boot disk do the job? Any other help very much appreciated. :[There isn't exactly an XP boot disk, at least not the kind you're probably looking for. Have you tried any of the system RESTORE options, or the "Load last settings that worked" option? There may be several causes of MUP.sys, error, including HD failure.
Do you have Windows XP CD, or Recovery CD?

If anyone sends me an attachment I cant open it in MS outlook. Also tried to do a windows restore and the window comes up blank as well as when I try to do a Windows Update. Also tried it in SAFE mode using cmd prompt but I got the same results. Any one ever dealt with this before? It's not a virus as it didn't start until right after the Mcafee uninstall. Thanks in advance. I'm on a DEll running XP SP2Did you try System Restore?I tried but the restore window comes up blank and I cant find another way to perform the restore without using that window. Even tried it in safemode as well as using a cmd line. Do you know of another way to look at sytem restore? Thanks.Try doing an uninstall/reinstall of OE & IE thru Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

Solve : block sender list?

Answer»

I have Windows 98se. Internet Explorer 6.
I was told that when I use the block sender on my e-mail,
It goes to a block sender list, but that list stays on my computer.
Not even sure if the block sender works with all the spam I get.
My question is; How do I remove the block sender list from my PC
so I can FREE up space and make my PC run better?
Thanks
John GodThat list would be a TEXT file and not accomplish freeing up any space...Thanks
Happy Holidays
JohnIf you have a burner on that machine you may want to consider backing up some other files to CD/DVD to free up some space...most common space hungry files would be photos, movies and music...not neccessarily in that order.
The other option would be to add ANOTHER HDD. They are relatively inexpensive right now and this is something you could do yourself with not too much effort.

Happy New YEAR to you as well.Mr God, as for the spam, I use Mailwasher. It's free and works well. You get to DELETE all spam while it's still on the server.

Solve : inserting a .dll file?

Answer»

Hi from SCOTLAND, I was trying to install a .dll file into a folder by using "copy and paste" but "paste" is greyed out for some reason, this was the help file that came with it, thanks in anticipation, Jim.
How to install:

Download CD1, CD2, CD3 and the crack.
You use Daemon tools and mount CD1.
Then the install.EXE will start automaticly.
The program will install 10% and then ask for CD2 which you then mount. If you are lucky the install will understand that the CD2 is inserted but you can also chose to manually browse the CD2. The program will now install 20%
The program will ask for the CD3 which you mount. Same here as above.
The program is now installed.
Now you open the Crack.rar file and extract the files to any direction you want.
Insert the CRP32DLL.dll file into the direction:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WorkshopData\48\I meant to add that my OS is WINDOWS 2000 pro, thanks. Please see the FORUM Regulations.
Our Policy is no assistance with warez or any other illegal software.

Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Recovery. Go back to yesterday and do a system restore.

Direct Quote:
System Restore does not cause you to lose your personal files or password. Items like documents, e-mail messages, browsing history, and the last specified password are saved when you revert to an earlier state with System Restore.

So if it doesn't affect browsing history, then it probably won't restore it. Best advice? Don't browse sites that you don't WANT people to be able to see in your history, or use a portable browser on a USB.

Solve : Help! Broadband video displays only when I click on Windows Pinball game -HELP!?

Answer»

This problem is driving me crazy!!I like to watch a canadian business show which is BROADCAST over the net via broadband. Here's the problem; I can ACCESS the site and a specific program. It downloads but only plays the AUDIO portion and not the video. I have no problems downlading audio and video together from other broadcasts.
Now here's the REALLY zanny thing I accidently discovered while downloading one of these programs. I happen to click on the show to download it and then also clicked on the Windows video game, so I could at least see some kind of video while I listened to the broadcast. Well guess what? The video part of the broadcast APPEARS and everything is fine untill the show ends at which point I once again have to click on to the video game in order to also activate the video part of the program. So geeks!!; what is going on here and how do I eliminate this 'switch' or glitch so I can watch these programs without having to activate them every time by clicking on the windows pin ball game? thanks [I'm running Windows XP]

Solve : disable start up programs running in the background?

Answer»

Hi I've checked and performed the advice in the question and answer and I had another question.
when I go to MSCOMFIG I waswonering if there were any porgrams I could safely uncheck to speed up my computer even more. In the following list are there any programs I can safely uncheck?

SpySweeper UI
HPW u Sdhd2
Nero check
ctfmon
SNDMon
ccApp
hkcmd
igfxtra
cfgWiz
qttusk
RECGUARD
SynTPEnh
SyntPLpr
THE ENDAs I'm new here, I may be answering a question that has been answered before, but I'll do it anyway.

In msconfig, under the startup tab, you can disable everything.

Basically, using my way of explaining things, the PARTS of the programs that you see will not start up. However, things like your printer or antivirus, anti spyware might have parts that run as a service or similar and will start anyway. A lot of programs, especially Windows, circumvent that altogether. So I may be wrong, but I've never had trouble (Other than shutting down parts of antiviruses etc,)

Or you could go the safer way and Google whatever it is you want to uncheck (ctfmon for instance) and find out what it does.I'll be glad to help you, but I need better info.
Download "Autoruns": http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx
Run it, click on "Logon" tab.
Go File>Save As. Save the file to known location.
Open that file in Notepad, and post its content back here.

igfxtra
cfgWiz
qttusk
RECGUARD
SynTPEnh
SyntPLpr
THE END

You can uncheck:
HPW u Sdhd2 (hard to say without a HijackThis log - but probably can be unticked)
Nero Check is not necessary
Ctfmon isn't necessary, but should be left there - it's to do with Microsoft office
SNDMon is from Norton/Symantec, so if this is your antivirus, leave it
ccApp is also from Norton, so should be left
hkcmd is part of Intels graphics driver "HotKey" program. It is not essential, and can also be DISABLED in Control Panel
igfxtra - assuming you meant igfxtray, this is also ASSOCIATED with the graphics, and is a utility for customizing graphics and other diagnostics to do with your graphics. If you disabled the previous one, I would probably disable this also.
cfgWiz is also part of Norton
qttusk - assuming you meant qttask, can be disabled - it's just a quick start for QuickTime
RECGUARD is from HP and prevents you from disabling or corrupting the recovery partition on your computer. If you know you won't touch it, you could disabled it, however, if you accidentally do something or a child or a virus, then you cannot use the HP recovery console.
SynTPEnh & SyntPLpr is part of the Synaptic touch pad you use for a mouse on your laptop. If you do not use the touchpad, this can be disabled, but I would leave it running

This is not a complete list of all the startup programs. To get a complete list, run HijackThis and save a log and post it here. Though, to really speed up your PC, I probably wouldn't have bought either a laptop or a HP in the first place, but the simplest way would be to GET RID OF NORTON! It's a big system resource hog. Next to that (if you are feeling confident), I would replace the HP version of XP with a Regular version (I.e. not OEM). After that, I would just get a desktop PC. But that's beside your original question. Hope that helped a little bit.

And yeah, by the way, definitely disregard this advice:

In msconfig, under the startup tab, you can disable everything.

It's true that their service may start anyway, but often this programs are required as part of the service, so do not uncheck everything.

-StephenWell, I guess I disagree. Regardless, the question was what can I safely uncheck. The answer is everything. certain installed programs won't work, and it's not really a good way to speed your PC (Because I have found most programs still have parts that run and some will turn certain services off)... I use autoruns.exe, services.msc. etc. and also use msconfig.

I've never a system crash by unchecking them all. You need to pay attention to what they do, because some you will end up turning back on.

Perhaps it is an easier to make the statement "Please, disregard the above advice!" than to give some reason. But alas, all boards are the same.

Enjoy.

I could have swore my post had more to it than what was quoted.... weird.

Ok, more to the point, its not a case of "please disregard the above advice", it's a case of "please disregard the above advice for beginners". As you mentioned, yes, you can turn them all off, but yes, as also stated, some services will not run if you choose to do so. This can cause system instability, and in this case would've turned off his graphics custom control and his anti-virus (even if it is norton). Disabling a firewall/antivirus is never a good idea, especially if you don't know what you've done. Sure, if you were more advanced, you could deselect them all, see if the system runs better, and then re-enable the ones that you need. But here, we are dealing with someone who obviously doesn't know what the processes do (hence him asking us), and by telling him to disregard your advice, we are helping them by not over complicating things, but instead spoon feeding them the info that they wanted. And ultimately, isn't that our common goal? To help this person? Good, now that that's sorted, to tackle the other brief issue - we only quoted that part of your message because once again, that is the only part of the message that needed to be referred to, and as such, was only quoted so as to keep things simple. Yes, your advice works, but not, it's not for this person.

Now you have a reason. And I don't believe it's a fact that all boards are the same, rather that all people are the same. If someone disagrees with them on the board, they blame it on the board first before listening to reasons why. You could've had the same information by simply asking "Why?" Also, I think you will find that I gave a reason before:

I hope you found this reply sufficiently quoted. Have a nice day

-Stephen"Please disregard this for beginners" makes more sense, and of course you did give a reason why a beginner would not do that. However, I was not referring to your specific mention, it seemed to be parroting, maybe I took it wrong?

I also offered a safe way to go "Google". If you don't know what a program, .exe, startup is, you can always find out.

I think having a beginner download autoruns.exe to be insane, assuming the needed to be spoon fed. If they are going to play with something, other than regedit, it is one of the easier ways to system instability. I suppose it's a matter of personal taste.

Of course, I didn't learn by a book, I learned by deleting my registry, and turning off services and basically following my IT buddies advice and "Break it" (Not all at the same time), then I had to learn how to fix it, then not break it.

Either way I got a TAD grumpier than called for, and I apologize for that.

Boards, like people, have personality traits (Being a member of quite a few of various interests), usually they are quite obvious. Perhaps I spoke too soon. But I'm not really looking for a beginners board.

Y'all have a good one.
Pleased to hear that we are seeing along similar lines now I too learnt just from investigating various things, and breaking systems in order to fix them. Google was a good suggestion, and they should've done it anyway, I just gave it to them so they didn't have to google. In terms of getting grumpy, everyone does once in a while if they feel they've been wronged, and we all understand that. This isn't a beginners forum, we just get beginners here - and they're here for that very reason - to get help from the more advanced or experienced. I do agree that boards have personality traits, but you may have spoken too soon (after only two posts), and you can see that. I hope your stay here continues to be pleasant and enjoyable.

Whatever you do with your computer, it's your business, but, please, do not advice other people to do the same, because it's not right thing to do.
If you disable all msconfig startups, you disable your firewall (if third party), your antivirus, your antimalware program, and couple more essential programs.

That said, arlene, please, do not disable anything, before we check which startups can be disabled safely.Too late I dissabled all start ups

Unfortunately, I don't have any means to prevent other people from hitting "Post" button, and posting RIDICULOUS statements.

Anyhow, you didn't break anything. You just removed checkmarks in "msconfig", and they can be put back right away.
Do so, restart your computer, and everything is gonna be back the way, it was before.

Yes, disabling all startups is fixable, but I gave you the list of what you could and could not disable. This isn't a forums for moderators to settle public disputes, as none of us are moderators, we are simply disagreeing over one mans advice for you. This is a place for beginners to post, and that is why we are helping you. You never said you had a HP Laptop, just assuming you did because you had HP recovery software on there, and that would seem like the only logical reasoning behind it. And no need to feel unwelcome, none of the dispute was directed at you, only directed in helping you stay computer-safe.

Solve : cannot write to F:?

Answer»

Hi, how are all of you?

My computer was working just FINE but from the last 4 to 5 weeks, I am having strange problem. During working, I get a sound similar to "BEEP" from the CPU. Then the PC freezes up. And I have to restart it. I am 100% CONFIDANT that the sound comes from the HardDisk. I have Windows XP and Windows 98. With XP, the computer just freezes up without any message but with windows 98, it freezes up by giving a message "Cannot write to Driver F:". It is important to mention here that I have Windows XP in C and Windows 98 in F drive.

I have Seagate 80 GB HardDisk. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks .... to all of you

Sincerely,
..::WAHAB
I need the list of partitions and drive letters in both OSes.Thanks for your reply:

C: Windows XP [20GB]
D: [20GB]
E: [20GB]
F: Windows 98 Se [20GB]

File System : FAT32 on all drives

I really appreciate your help....please let me know if you need more information.

Hard drives do not beep.
What happened priior to this ? ?
Any new hardware or softare added ? ?
Freezing issues are usually from overheating, bad RAM or hard drive issues...

Run chkdsk /r on all the partitions...this may take awhile.
Then defrag the 2 with OS's installed ...C: and F:

For the heat issue remove a side panel and see how dirty it is inside. If it is get a can of compressed air to clean out all the heatsinks and fans...use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place while blasting them.
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions.

To check the memory DLoad MemTest to create a bootable floppy/CD. Let it run a few hours ...any errors MEANS bad RAM and if you do get errors you should run one stick at a time afterwards to determine which one has gone South.

I've given you a bit of work to do but hang in there and if you need further assistance with any of the steps let us know.

Hi Thank you for your suggestions. I am downloading MemTest 3.5 from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Memory-Tweak/MemTest.shtml to make sure my computers RAM is working properly.

But I have decided to re-partition my whole harddisk and install everything from scratch. Do you think it will solve the problem? As far as beep or sound is concerned, I am 100% sure that, the sound came from the harddisk.

No any new hardware added.
Nothing happen prior to this. Just working fine on my PC, a sound similar to beep came out and after 3 to 4 seconds, my PC get Freeze. One thing I notice, is that after giving beep or sound, the "the red light of the PC which shows reading of hard disk" keep ON even after PC got FREEZE...!!!

Well I know that hard drive does not beep but that is not the beep rather similar to beep. I got similar sound when I use to shut my PC down and that is normal I think since I have been receiving a beep like sound from the hard disk just before my PC turn OFF, from the time when I bought this hard drive. My Hard Drive is just 1 year and 1 month old.

If you want any other information, just let me know. I really appreciate you assistance.

Thanks,

..::WAHABAs an added precaution you can DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. website...this will also create a bootable CD to run.Quote from: Dr Wahab on November 10, 2007, 12:28:13 AM

Hmm, that's interesting, considering that Win 98SE has to be installed first in such dual boot configurations and it would have to be installed on C. How did you go about creating this dual boot setup where you have Win XP on C and Win 98SE on F? It would normally just the OPPOSITE. Quote from: Dr Wahab on November 11, 2007, 09:31:51 PM

If you can show me where on your hard drive there is a SPEAKER to beep, I will eat a hat of your choosing.

Have you cleaned the inside of your computer case...ever?Hi thanks for replying again. Well as I said already that the sound is similar to beep not exactly ""BEEP". Just like the fan gives out sound without any speaker. In the same way, I get that sound from inside my Hard Disk

aaahh...this is a long story "how did I create this boot setup". But now I will change this boot setup.

Further more, I use to clean-up my PC from time to time. About 3 months ago, I removed all parts of it and then put them back again after cleaning everything.

I have downloaded a HDD Diagnostic tool from Seagate website. Let see what happen today since I will be doing with my HDD today.

Thanks....

..::WAHABHi again. Last night, I repartitioned my hole hard disk with following partitions:

C: 10 GB FAT32 will be for Windows 98
D: 20 GB FAT32
E: 30 GB FAT32
F: 20 GB FAT32 will be for Windows XP

I just want to ask if there are any test available in DOS mode that make sure that there is no problem with my harddisk and it is working just fine. I just want to be sure that there wont be any more problems once I installed my OS. Since I cannot afford re-installing whole system from time to time. I shall be very thankful to you.

Sincerely,

..::WAHABTravel to the HDD manuf. site and DLoad their diagnostics which will create a bootable CD/floppy and run them...I have partitioned my hard disk as described above. Now I have another issue. Today, I tried to install windows 98 after booted from Windows 98 bootable CD. But when I run the setup, my PC hangs when the setup says "Preparing to install windows 98". The progress bar reached to 100%, the mouse cursor showed as "Busy" and then PC got freeze. One thing I notice that my Floppy Drive continue to be ON even I restarted my PC. So I disconnect it but the problem remains same.

Any suggestions..!!!

Solve : Allocating memory for the services that are installed?

Answer»

Hi folks,
I want to allocate some extra memory for certain services running. EX: OUtlook.exe
Can we do that in windows XP.

Thanks
Jothish
The software allocates its own memory as needed, to force it to have more than it's asking for WOULD just be wasting your ram. HI Anodoin,

Ya i can understand that but there is services running that requires more RAM so that i will made adjustment to run faster instead increasing RAM.

Thanks
JothishDo you have programs complaining about too little available memory or what is the problem? The AMOUNT of memory ALLOCATED to each program is done automatically and isn't something you can or should mess with.

When I go to Display Propoerties >Desktop, the Browse button is greyed out, and I can't select a new background. I use Windows XP and it is also unable to change the background. And when i right click on an image and select "set as desktop background" still it will not change..

Can anyone please help...

Carefully read the INSTRUCTIONS at the Top of the page...cut and paste them to a textfile if need be...

The fix you need is on line 128...right side.It didn't work for me, i got the same issue to Quote from: tommy gusack on November 15, 2007, 01:26:00 PM

It didn't work for me, i got the same issue to

Did you follow the instructions at the top of the page ? ?uh huh, i go to 128, and click the right one, and save it in C: then I install the registry, then I try changing my wallpaper but can'tQuote
To use the Regedits: Save the REG FILE to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Try saving it to the Desktop instead.
I've NEVER known this not to work...

The one you have is a regedit...not a VBS.

Solve : How do i download a program to only my user account??

How do i download a program to only my user account?
I want to download a program to my user only and not my grandmas. How?Direct it to your account. If you're USING XP Pro (or higher), Open a folder. Then, under tools, click Folder Options. In the View tab, at the bottom of the list is Use Simple Sharing or Use Sharing Wizard. Uncheck that. Now, use Explorer to find the program. Right-click on the program (or the folder it's in) and go into its Properties page. In the Security tab, you'll SEE at the top a list of groups or user names. If your grandmother's account is not LISTED, you'll have to add it manually. Clicking Add, ADVANCED, Find Now will bring up a list of the accounts on your MACHINE. Once you add her name, select it, and then in the bottom window where it lists the permissions, put a check next to everything in the Deny column.Do you have Admin priveledges on your account ? ?
It doesn't seem so...

Solve : Win XP PC wont boot, blue screen before crash?

Answer»

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Gigabyte motherboard
NCP 2x512 MEG DDR400 ram
Seagate Barracude 200 gig

hey guys, basically my pc starts up fine until it gets to the win xp loading splash screen whatever, theres a flash of a blue screen and then my pc restarts, this can go on for hours.

I tried all the modes in the F8 menu.

please help! THANKS1. Windows XP? Which version of the operating system are you using? HOME Edition or Professional? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or SP2?

Hoping for an answer similiar to Windows XP Home SP2 or Windows XP Professional SP2.

2. Is this a "Brand" computer, home-built, or store built white box? Did you purchase it with Windows XP pre-installed?

3. What recovery resources do you have available to fix the operating system if necessary?

a. Microsoft Windows XP Setup CD (Home/Professional, Original/SP1/SP2)
b. OEM Windows Setup CD (Home/Professional, Original/SP1/SP2)
C. OEM Recovery CD (aka Restore CD)
d. OEM Recovery Partition

4. By default, if the system encounters a serious error while loading the Windows XP operating system, it attempts to display error text and numbers on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and then automatically restarts.

To recover from the "Windows Advanced Options Menu", you would normally attempt "Safte MODE", followed by "Last known good configuration" followed by the "Disable automatic restart on system error" item. If those options don't work or are not available you would move on to the use of the Windows XP "Recovery Console".

5. Did you make any hardware/software changes immediately prior to the boot failure?

Solve : Where is my MS Word??

Answer»

My computer was so slow among other things so I reloaded XP Pro from my original disk and SP2 from Microsoft. Now it's ALMOST like a new machine, fast, some programs that didn't work before now work. But now I REALIZE I don't have MS Word or the rest of the office suite. Can anybody give me a clue as to what happened?
Also the start menu looks like the-do they call it the traditional view?. How do I change to the view I had before? Thanks much! Well, the MS Office suite is not free. You either got Word from Office or from MS WORKS Suite, neither of which is free. So, if you want Word, you need a CD for Office or Works Suite; that's all there is to it.

Now, if you want to consider some freeware options, you could TRY OpenOffice; it's a full office suite (word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc.). For just a word processor, one that doesn't have all the features you find in Word, I'll suggest AbiWord; it will read Word documents. And keep in mind for the future that anytime you re-install your OS you will lose any programs that were installed after you bought the machine...
Did you recieve any program CD's with the machine ? ?
If so re-install what you need.
You may want to check everything in Device Manager also in case there are some device drivers missing...these get wiped as well.

Solve : System Restore Password Problem?

Answer»

I've got issues

Specs: HP Pavillion, Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Svc Pack II, P4, 3 Ghz, 1GB Ram.

O.K. I've got some Maleware, Trojan issues at hand. I want to restore my pc to it's original settings. I'm told that my model has a "system restore" feature that acts kind of like the "fdisk" funtion.

So...I shut down pc, hit F10 key, selected the option to restore system, then was asked to enter my admin password. I don't recall setting one up. I don't know how to reset or bypass this option. I'm guessing that this password is stored in my bios settings somewhere, but again I have no idea how to deal with this situation.

Please help!!!Click your Start button, Help and support and you'll find system restore under "Tasks". However, this may not get you back to a clean computer. You should go to this link to run an on-line scan. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Here is another great site to learn how you were infected and what you can do to protect your computer.

SD if i read this correctly he's not trying to do a System Restore from Windows rather he wants to restore the machine back to Day One status...
benavidez make sure you understand this will erase all your data and any programs installed after the machine was new...
If you are sure you want to proceed and you are certain there is no Admin password set then simply hit Enter when prompted for the password and the setup should proceed provided you did not set an Admin password...Similiar (?) question about system restore . I ran a registery cleaner utility & trusted IT to do know what was not needed . Now when i try & retore XP 2 will only restore to the current months dates . In short i am totaly confused about registery utilities . So many people EXPOUND them yet i find othes that DENOUNCE them ( including my friend that was an MS IT for years ) . What is a " dummy " to believe .. ? CDO,
First off Welcome Aboard ! !
It's probably best to start a new Topic ...even though the problem is SIMILAR this way it will recieve the proper attentionThanks gang for your responses.

Patio, you were right. What I was looking for by definition was complete "System Recovery" vs. a "System restore". I just didn't know what exactly to call it at the time.

A built in program called HP System Recovery helped me fix things. I guess if I learned to do just a LITTLE exploring before running to the FORUM I could have easily figured things out. Here's where I found the program.

Start, Programs, PC Help & Tools, HP System Recovery. I was then given a couple of options on how I wanted to recover my pc. I was given 2 choices of how I wanted to recover my system.

The "destructive recovery" option removes everything on your system & restores it to it's original state. You know like the day you purchased it. All of your personally added software, files, address's etc.. are removed.

The other option is a regular "system recovery", where which tries to leave all of your files and programs in tact. This is the option I chose. I left most everything in tact. You're going to want to back up your stuff anyway. I lost address books in outlook & messages. I also lost my internet security program PC-Cillin. I'll have to reload that later. For now I have the originally installed Norton which was actively working upon recover.

Thanks again gang!!!

Glad to hear you are fixed up and running again...

Now is a good time to seriously start considering a solid backup strategy.
I highly recommend Acronis True Image.

Stop by anytime !

Solve : At startup - Dell Logo F2 = Setup - is missing?

Answer»

I need to GET into "Setup" at startup. "Press F2" at startup is required to do so. HOWEVER, on my pc , the DELL Logo window with - up at top right of screen - Press F2 = Setup is missing. Am using a Dell XPS600 and it is working great all the time -except for the above. How can I get back my "Dell Logo plus Setup = press F2 " back? Have tried everything including using a PS2 keyboard (To bypass my USB Wireless keyboard). At the very beginning of startup I get some writing for about 5 secs and then straight into Windows startup. Very frustrated -- please help. Regards MICHAEL r. ps Nowhere in the FAQ's can I find anything relevant. The logo screen does not have to be there...
START tapping F2 repeatedly on start and you will get there.

Solve : Cannot access Setup (F2) on Dell XPS600.?

Answer»

Sorry for repeat question but I just cannot FIND the "Reply" button to my first post where some kind lady has REPLIED! Sorry about that. Simply put - no amount of tapping the F2 button on my Dell XPS600 pc will get me into Setup. At startup the "F2=Setup" (at top right) is not on the screen to click. Neither is the Dell Logo ( which is not important at this time) that should also appear at startup. I need to get into the BIOS. Even tapping F2 immediately - (and often) - after pressing Start (without waiting for any prompt) does'nt work either. (Strange thing is - some time ago - after pressing START - the Dell Logo and the "Setup = F2 " did appear on my screen before anything else - but that never happens anymore. Where's it gone - and why?)
Is there an other way to get to Setup? Any ideas? Regards and thanks Michael r.Here it is...1. I'm assuming your system works and successfully boots up into a working operating system. Not sure why the DELL logo doesn't display during startup... That's probably a good thing. Better to watch the POST screen to learn what normal startup looks like than the "dumbed down" logo screen.

2. Enter CMOS Setup. Turn on your computer, and watch the keyboard lights. As SOON as they flash, press the F2 key. The message, Entering Setup should appear.

3. Once in CMOS find the SECTION controlling "POST behavior" - Fastboot, Numlock key, POST hotkeys, and Keyboard errors. The POST hotkeys option allows you to specify the function keys to display on the screen when the computer starts.

Solve : Ok..gettin frustrated.?

Answer»

I asked a question bout finding the product code for a particular OS on my machine yesterday...got a quick answer that worked like a charm. Got my code..went to work to install my 2000Pro on my other computer..but now it won't take the code. I found my original copy of the CD,(blame it on my wife)..& so I KNOW the code is right. But it won't accept it. So..I tried to put on a copy of XP Pro..won't take the code for it either. Loads fine up till that point.
These ARE legitimate CD's & Codes...but it has me baffled. Are you sure you're installing the right version of 2000? The key is for a specific version, so a key for an English retail version of the OS wont work on an OEM version for example. I'm sure they match right. I know..for instance you can't use an XP Home code for pro..ETC. The Codes I have are for the 2000 Pro..(had it for years now) 7 the code for the XP Pro was on the CD when given to me as a gift.It worked on a different computer..but not this one I'm trying now. It's an older NEC...but has 450 Mghz & 192Mb ram so I know power's not an issue. Won't fly..but will work. I'm wondering if it's something in the old HD...or bios.Don't quite know what to say then. If they key and OS version match it should work. I assume you've already triple checked you enter the code correctly.Heh heh...& then some...

Just had a thought...I have two HD's on there...a 6Gb..& a 2.8Gb. Could that be part of the problem...I had the swapfiles for the old system on the 2nd HDIt shouldn't matter if you're installing to 1st HD. But HEY it can't hurt to disconnect it.
Are you doing a clean install or installing the OS over the old one?
Yep..clean install.
It had XP Home on there..which i don't care for...so figured I's replace it. Just took out the 2nd HD to SEE if it makes a difference.

Oh well..that didn't make a difference. This is really weird...As a last resort you could always contact MS...they're not the ogres everyone makes them out to be on liscensing issues...

BTW are you running FDisk on that drive beforehand ? ?
If you have a floppy drive you can DLoad the file from bootdisk.com
Worth a shot.No..hadn't run Fdisk...just reformatted off the 2000 disk. I have a copy on floppy here somewhere.....but I thought that was just for Fat32?

Ok for an update...downloaded a program to wipe the HD...then tried installing 2000 on a clean HD...& I mean sqweeky clean...no go. Still says the code is invalid. I did get a 30 day trial version of XP Media Center to load...heh.Off the XP Pro disk...now figure that one out.So both XP and Win2K are doing the same thing ? ?

The codes are case-sensitive...are you sure capslock is turned off ? ?

I've also seen this happen when using numpad instead of the regular keys....Yes...both are doing the same. I'm on the computer now with the trial version of Media Center installed. I went to the MS site...all they want to do is sell me something. If I had the money I'd buy a new key for the XP Pro...but can't. I bought the 2000Pro back in 03 so I shouldn't have to pay for it again.
My stepson tried to use the XP cd on his laptop...code wouldn't work there either, so I may just have the wrong code for that one. No big deal..but still don't know why the 2000 won't work..that code has been validated by the MS update center. So I know it's legit still. Has to be something on this computer, the HD, something. I have another HD I'm gonna wipe clean..hook up & see what happens then later today. Not sure why they wanted to sell you something...
The last time i had this issue all they did was enter the code into their DBase to see if it was being used and they issued me a new code on the phone...Sorry I been so long in responding...
The MS site said I didn't qualify for another code...or free tech answers, even by email. Like I said no biggy...the XP Media center is good for 30 days...but Sometime I'll get the proper code for XP Pro. Hadn't even had time to try the other HD yet & see if 2000 will install on that. But a new day, a new year, & the same old junk with MS...but that the price ya pay!!
If I get it figured out I'll let yuns know...for future reference!
Ok...guess I'll give up...the other HD I was gonna use won't work in the computer either...no matter how I set the jumper. It "see" a drive there but won't let me do ANYTHING with it.
This is an Old NEC...which I know the Ram in it won't work in my Dell...which was made the same year....guess it's got lots of issues...too bad..seems to be fast enough for what i use if I could get another OS to install. Oh well...someday I'll get rich & get rid of my antiques!!!It would make a nice Linux box...Ubuntu is pretty decent and if you travel to their site they will ship you up to 10 sets of CD's with both a Live version you can run from the CD and an install CD...

Solve : Word 2007?

Answer»

Bill GATES you make enough money!!!!!
I have Word 2007, only becuase it CAME with my new computer, and the issue I have is the following:
after you create a word document if you save it as you used to with previous versions of Word it will save it in the following format:
gates_sucks.docx
this is no problem until you want to attach or send the document to someone with an earlier version of Word. It is unreadable!!!! What I have found I must do, to practically all my documents, is: save as Word 2000-2003 and then give the document a name. Double the work!! It then has saved the document in the following form gates_suck.doc. Now everyone can read it.
Is there another way to save this document without saving as first and then NAMING the document.

I don't understand the problem. As far as I can see the procedure for saving a document is the same whether you choose docx or doc as the format. You always have to choose a name for a document when you save it for the first TIME... have I misunderstood the question?First you must save the document as word 2000-2003 then give the document a title, as OPPOSED to just naming the document when you have hit the save icon.Quote from: wildwood on November 16, 2007, 07:08:33 PM

First you must save the document as word 2000-2003 then give the document a title, as opposed to just naming the document when you have hit the save icon.
That doesn't make sense. You're saying you save the document and THEN name it later. Hmmm, so you save it first without a name?

Let's make this more clear by restating the real issue, which is that you have to choose the Word 2000-2003 format for saving, rather than accepting the default format for Word 2007 and that's an extra step. That's the point here, right?

Here's what you need to do: Change Word 2007 Default Saving Format to Compatibility Mode
