Solve : windows Xp sp2 desktop loads then reloads then goes blank? |
|
Answer» MY pc which has been doing quite well lately decided to freak out LOL In Task Manager, click on Run button, type in explorer, and hit Enter. I did that last night and it popped up them vanished again...Quote from: Broni on November 08, 2007, 12:16:30 PM BTW...did you try to reseat video card, and RAM? Yes and they were fine..... I guess, clean reinstall may be your only option. Do you have a lot of data to loose? Any backups?Update: Ok It was not a software, windows problem..it was actually a very nasty trojan called Virtumonde. This thing multiplied and caused so much havoc in my pc ..I had to literally chase it down to kill it. Anyway.. I realized this when I was just doing a virus scan from task manager and AntiVir went nuts when it got to my Windows/fonts folder. It started showing some really strange stuff that I had never seen before. I went to the folder and lo and behold there was NOTHING there. I had barely put my cursor on the file when it showed me a little of what the file contained and it was 3 gbs !! I saw something called a.zip and I did a search for it and opened it and there was a file that I did not have there before so I tried to delete it and BOOM! my computer shut down so ...hmmm ok now that must be what is making my pc miserable ... I ran all of my viruswares one by one and none found it but Antivir and it keep asking me what I wanted to do with it.. I tried everything and it had locked the file from me.!! ARGHH OK! its 3 am and I am not giving up so ... I download all those Vundo fix scanners and NOTHING worked so I shut off my pc and went to BED ... The next day I got up and went back to my Antivir and scanned and it went nuts. It found all the viruses that had been spawned from that trojan and it was busy deleting them one by one.. (Now this program beeps everytime it finds something so my house was full of beeping for at least an hour.) Finally I had an idea to look up how to get rid of the virus... I downloaded Trojan Remover and it GOT IT!! Finally and all of the sudden my desktop was back to normal. I scanned some more and eliminated more viruses and now my PC is locked down with Zone alarm and virus free... just wanted to share this in case anyone has the same problems I had! Thanks for The Great help!! Broni!!! I didn't help that much...LOL I'm happy, though, you're back in business. I guess, it wouldn't hurt, if you posted your HijackThis log. |

Solve : URGENT HELP REQUIRED? |
|
Answer» Hello .... this is slightly an emergency as I'm in the middle of my final exams - but my computer has DELETED all of My Music, My Pictures, My Documents, etc .... and nothing remains. Is there any way possible that this can be recovered? Many thanks in advance ... and if someone could help immediately it would be appreciated! sorry i was wondering if system restore also restores deleted browsing history?Consider starting your own topic NEXT time. In answer though: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/app_system_restore_hss_understand.mspx?mfr=true Direct Quote: System Restore does not cause you to lose your personal files or password. Items like documents, e-mail messages, browsing history, and the last specified password are saved when you revert to an earlier state with System Restore. So if it doesn't affect browsing history, then it probably won't restore it. Best advice? Don't browse sites that you don't WANT people to be able to see in your history, or use a portable browser on a USB. -Stephen"Best advice? Don't browse sites that you don't want people to be able to see in your history." I laughed out loud. |

Solve : disable start up programs running in the background? |
|
Answer» Hi I've checked and performed the advice in the question and answer and I had another question. In msconfig, under the startup tab, you can disable everything. Please, disregard the above advice! As always... Thanks In the following list: SpySweeper UI HPW u Sdhd2 Nero check ctfmon SNDMon ccApp hkcmd igfxtra cfgWiz qttusk RECGUARD SynTPEnh SyntPLpr THE END You can uncheck: HPW u Sdhd2 (hard to say without a HijackThis log - but probably can be unticked) Nero Check is not necessary Ctfmon isn't necessary, but should be left there - it's to do with Microsoft office SNDMon is from Norton/Symantec, so if this is your antivirus, leave it ccApp is also from Norton, so should be left hkcmd is part of Intels graphics driver "HotKey" program. It is not essential, and can also be DISABLED in Control Panel igfxtra - assuming you meant igfxtray, this is also ASSOCIATED with the graphics, and is a utility for customizing graphics and other diagnostics to do with your graphics. If you disabled the previous one, I would probably disable this also. cfgWiz is also part of Norton qttusk - assuming you meant qttask, can be disabled - it's just a quick start for QuickTime RECGUARD is from HP and prevents you from disabling or corrupting the recovery partition on your computer. If you know you won't touch it, you could disabled it, however, if you accidentally do something or a child or a virus, then you cannot use the HP recovery console. SynTPEnh & SyntPLpr is part of the Synaptic touch pad you use for a mouse on your laptop. If you do not use the touchpad, this can be disabled, but I would leave it running This is not a complete list of all the startup programs. To get a complete list, run HijackThis and save a log and post it here. Though, to really speed up your PC, I probably wouldn't have bought either a laptop or a HP in the first place, but the simplest way would be to GET RID OF NORTON! It's a big system resource hog. Next to that (if you are feeling confident), I would replace the HP version of XP with a Regular version (I.e. not OEM). After that, I would just get a desktop PC. But that's beside your original question. Hope that helped a little bit. And yeah, by the way, definitely disregard this advice: Quote from: Josh Riel on November 14, 2007, 07:34:50 PM In msconfig, under the startup tab, you can disable everything. It's true that their service may start anyway, but often this programs are required as part of the service, so do not uncheck everything. -StephenWell, I guess I disagree. Regardless, the question was what can I safely uncheck. The answer is everything. certain installed programs won't work, and it's not really a good way to speed your PC (Because I have found most programs still have parts that run and some will turn certain services off)... I use autoruns.exe, services.msc. etc. and also use msconfig. I've never a system crash by unchecking them all. You need to pay attention to what they do, because some you will end up turning back on. Perhaps it is an easier to make the statement "Please, disregard the above advice!" than to give some reason. But alas, all boards are the same. Enjoy. I could have swore my post had more to it than what was quoted.... weird. Quote from: Josh Riel on November 14, 2007, 11:26:42 PM Well, I guess I disagree. Ok, more to the point, its not a case of "please disregard the above advice", it's a case of "please disregard the above advice for beginners". As you mentioned, yes, you can turn them all off, but yes, as also stated, some services will not run if you choose to do so. This can cause system instability, and in this case would've turned off his graphics custom control and his anti-virus (even if it is norton). Disabling a firewall/antivirus is never a good idea, especially if you don't know what you've done. Sure, if you were more advanced, you could deselect them all, see if the system runs better, and then re-enable the ones that you need. But here, we are dealing with someone who obviously doesn't know what the processes do (hence him asking us), and by telling him to disregard your advice, we are helping them by not over complicating things, but instead spoon feeding them the info that they wanted. And ultimately, isn't that our common goal? To help this person? Good, now that that's sorted, to tackle the other brief issue - we only quoted that part of your message because once again, that is the only part of the message that needed to be referred to, and as such, was only quoted so as to keep things simple. Yes, your advice works, but not, it's not for this person. Quote from: Josh Riel on November 14, 2007, 11:26:42 PM Perhaps it is an easier to make the statement "Please, disregard the above advice!" than to give some reason. But alas, all boards are the same. Now you have a reason. And I don't believe it's a fact that all boards are the same, rather that all people are the same. If someone disagrees with them on the board, they blame it on the board first before listening to reasons why. You could've had the same information by simply asking "Why?" Also, I think you will find that I gave a reason before: Quote from: phoenix910 on November 14, 2007, 09:07:13 PM And yeah, by the way, definitely disregard this advice:Sounds like another reason to me? Quote from: Josh Riel on November 14, 2007, 11:26:42 PM I could have swore my post had more to it than what was quoted.... weird. I hope you found this reply sufficiently quoted. Have a nice day -Stephen"Please disregard this for beginners" makes more sense, and of course you did give a reason why a beginner would not do that. However, I was not referring to your specific mention, it seemed to be parroting, maybe I took it wrong? I also offered a safe way to go "Google". If you don't know what a program, .exe, startup is, you can always find out. I think having a beginner download autoruns.exe to be insane, assuming the needed to be spoon fed. If they are going to play with something, other than regedit, it is one of the easier ways to system instability. I suppose it's a matter of personal taste. Of course, I didn't learn by a book, I learned by deleting my registry, and turning off services and basically following my IT buddies advice and "Break it" (Not all at the same time), then I had to learn how to fix it, then not break it. Either way I got a TAD grumpier than called for, and I apologize for that. Boards, like people, have personality traits (Being a member of quite a few of various interests), usually they are quite obvious. Perhaps I spoke too soon. But I'm not really looking for a beginners board. Y'all have a good one. Pleased to hear that we are seeing along similar lines now I too learnt just from investigating various things, and breaking systems in order to fix them. Google was a good suggestion, and they should've done it anyway, I just gave it to them so they didn't have to google. In terms of getting grumpy, everyone does once in a while if they feel they've been wronged, and we all understand that. This isn't a beginners forum, we just get beginners here - and they're here for that very reason - to get help from the more advanced or experienced. I do agree that boards have personality traits, but you may have spoken too soon (after only two posts), and you can see that. I hope your stay here continues to be pleasant and enjoyable. -StephenQuote In msconfig, under the startup tab, you can disable everything.Whatever you do with your computer, it's your business, but, please, do not advice other people to do the same, because it's not right thing to do. If you disable all msconfig startups, you disable your firewall (if third party), your antivirus, your antimalware program, and couple more essential programs. That said, arlene, please, do not disable anything, before we check which startups can be disabled safely.Too late I dissabled all start ups I didn't know this was a forum for moderators to settle their disputes on public forum how would I know this was not a place for beginners to post when did I say i had and HP computer, I have a Gateway lap i'm feeling a bit unwelcome here!I'm sorry for all that heated exchange, but I posted a warning: Quote Please, disregard the above advice!before you left this board last night. Unfortunately, I don't have any means to prevent other people from hitting "Post" button, and posting RIDICULOUS statements. Anyhow, you didn't break anything. You just removed checkmarks in "msconfig", and they can be put back right away. Do so, restart your computer, and everything is gonna be back the way, it was before. Then, please go with my advice: Quote I'll be glad to help you, but I need better info.let us know how you goQuote from: arlene on November 15, 2007, 04:12:02 PM Too late I dissabled all start upsYes, disabling all startups is fixable, but I gave you the list of what you could and could not disable. This isn't a forums for moderators to settle public disputes, as none of us are moderators, we are simply disagreeing over one mans advice for you. This is a place for beginners to post, and that is why we are helping you. You never said you had a HP Laptop, just assuming you did because you had HP recovery software on there, and that would seem like the only logical reasoning behind it. And no need to feel unwelcome, none of the dispute was directed at you, only directed in helping you stay computer-safe. -Stephen |

Solve : cannot write to F:? |
|
Answer» Hi, how are all of you? C: Windows XP [20GB]Hmm, that's interesting, considering that Win 98SE has to be installed first in such dual boot configurations and it would have to be installed on C. How did you go about creating this dual boot setup where you have Win XP on C and Win 98SE on F? It would normally just the OPPOSITE. Quote from: Dr Wahab on November 11, 2007, 09:31:51 PM Hi Thank you for your suggestions. I am downloading MemTest 3.5 from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Memory-Tweak/MemTest.shtml to make sure my computers RAM is working properly. If you can show me where on your hard drive there is a SPEAKER to beep, I will eat a hat of your choosing. Have you cleaned the inside of your computer case...ever?Hi thanks for replying again. Well as I said already that the sound is similar to beep not exactly ""BEEP". Just like the fan gives out sound without any speaker. In the same way, I get that sound from inside my Hard Disk aaahh...this is a long story "how did I create this boot setup". But now I will change this boot setup. Further more, I use to clean-up my PC from time to time. About 3 months ago, I removed all parts of it and then put them back again after cleaning everything. I have downloaded a HDD Diagnostic tool from Seagate website. Let see what happen today since I will be doing with my HDD today. Thanks.... Sincerely, ..::WAHABHi again. Last night, I repartitioned my hole hard disk with following partitions: C: 10 GB FAT32 will be for Windows 98 D: 20 GB FAT32 E: 30 GB FAT32 F: 20 GB FAT32 will be for Windows XP I just want to ask if there are any test available in DOS mode that make sure that there is no problem with my harddisk and it is working just fine. I just want to be sure that there wont be any more problems once I installed my OS. Since I cannot afford re-installing whole system from time to time. I shall be very thankful to you. Sincerely, ..::WAHABTravel to the HDD manuf. site and DLoad their diagnostics which will create a bootable CD/floppy and run them...I have partitioned my hard disk as described above. Now I have another issue. Today, I tried to install windows 98 after booted from Windows 98 bootable CD. But when I run the setup, my PC hangs when the setup says "Preparing to install windows 98". The progress bar reached to 100%, the mouse cursor showed as "Busy" and then PC got freeze. One thing I notice that my Floppy Drive continue to be ON even I restarted my PC. So I disconnect it but the problem remains same. Any suggestions..!!! Sincerely, WAHAB -FDO TEAMQuote from: patio on November 10, 2007, 02:15:56 PM Hard drives do not beep. |

Solve : Cannot access Setup (F2) on Dell XPS600.? |
|
Answer» Sorry for repeat question but I just cannot FIND the "Reply" button to my first post where some kind lady has REPLIED! Sorry about that. Simply put - no amount of tapping the F2 button on my Dell XPS600 pc will get me into Setup. At startup the "F2=Setup" (at top right) is not on the screen to click. Neither is the Dell Logo ( which is not important at this time) that should also appear at startup. I need to get into the BIOS. Even tapping F2 immediately - (and often) - after pressing Start (without waiting for any prompt) does'nt work either. (Strange thing is - some time ago - after pressing START - the Dell Logo and the "Setup = F2 " did appear on my screen before anything else - but that never happens anymore. Where's it gone - and why?) |

Answer» I asked a question bout finding the product code for a particular OS on my machine yesterday...got a quick answer that worked like a charm. Got my code..went to work to install my 2000Pro on my other computer..but now it won't take the code. I found my original copy of the CD,(blame it on my wife)..& so I KNOW the code is right. But it won't accept it. So..I tried to put on a copy of XP Pro..won't take the code for it either. Loads fine up till that point. |

Solve : Word 2007? |

Answer» Bill GATES you make enough money!!!!! First you must save the document as word 2000-2003 then give the document a title, as opposed to just naming the document when you have hit the save icon. That doesn't make sense. You're saying you save the document and THEN name it later. Hmmm, so you save it first without a name? Let's make this more clear by restating the real issue, which is that you have to choose the Word 2000-2003 format for saving, rather than accepting the default format for Word 2007 and that's an extra step. That's the point here, right? Here's what you need to do: Change Word 2007 Default Saving Format to Compatibility Mode |
