That information can be missing depending on the various changes that can be made by Hardware vendors... if some of the keys are present, but empty, windows will try to show the information that it believes the vendor wants displayed (for example, the logo, the model number, etc, but is actually a blank value. since it displays this "blank" value instead of the actual PC specs as it normally would you END up missing info.

either way it is irrelevant to the issue. we don't help when the problem is that the OS is pirated but if they are having minor issues with an OS install I don't see how an inquiry about their OS legitimacy is relevant.

For example if somebody says they can't seem to make a perfect circle in paint would we tell them to hold shift or would we ask them if their OS is pirated?

Answer» im a novice computer user so i hope i have enough info here. i was using bit defender on my hp pavilion 9033cl laptop running xp media center edition and saw that there were some critical updates. i didnt EVEN pay attention to what it was updating, just trusted the program. i fell asleep and when i woke up the screen saver was frozen. when i restarted my laptop it went to the BLUE screen. i tried system RESTORE and asked some friends for help but nothing worked. took all the info off both hard drives with an external enclosure and formatted them. bought the system RECOVERY disks from hp but still end up with the blue screen. the disks i made when i first received the laptop dont work. after the recovery disks finish it loads windows with few icons and restarts. then windows starts again with more icons on the desktop and restarts again this time going to the blue screen with the 0x0000007E (0xC0000005,0x804DA205,0xF9E87650,0xF9E8734C) ERROR message. when i try to boot in safe mode i get 0x0000007B (0xF9E53524, 0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000). thank you for any help! ALSO predictably, tapping F10 at startup just sent me to a black screen that did nothing for 15 minutes. Sounded like the laptop had just given up, wasn't making a sound and no lights were flashing. I took a look online to find a recovery CD for the Sony Vaio PCG-631M, but couldn't find anything that looked really helpful. http://www.user-guides.co.uk/Sony/Recovery/Sony-Vaio-Recovery-CD.htm has some recovery CDs for sale, but I don't much fancy buying one for a terribly old laptop that I only really want so that I can work outside of the house. Answer» I have a computer with a failing HARD drive, and I need to replace it. Continuing to use it is not an option. I am concerned, however, that replacing it (by buying a new drive and a device to transfer the data from the old to the new drive) will cause XP to invalidate itself. To my knowledge, XP has a 'feature' which creates a checksum of the system's hardware upon installation. If that checksum differs too greatly with a checksum created, say, at boot, then XP will invalidate itself and I will have to buy a new copy of XP. (Right?) I really don't want to buy another copy - is there a way to replace to hard drive and avoid REACTIVATION? -Ianreplacing just the drive won't engage the protection mechanism. If you replaced the video card and NIC at the same time though, maybe. (your not doing that though). Also, I've done this myself twice (transferred my OS to a larger drive) and neither time did XP bicker. Even so, you couldn't invalidate the copy anyway; you would just need to PHONE MS to reactivate; there would be no need to buy another copy (UNLESS you tried to install it onto two PCs at the same time),sigh of RELIEF Thank you for clearing that up. Answer» After modifying several software settings in order to improve performance on an aging IBM Thinkpad R40 I find I cannot CONNECT to FTP sites. It says connecting to (for example) 123.123.123.123:21, then CONNECTED to 123.123.123.123 PORT 21, then the next line says connection failed. This happens when trying to connect to any FTP site from the Thinkpad. I have not modified the software settings on the other, newer XP machine (a build off eBay that works great) and it gets out and uploads and DOWNLOADS files to and from FTP sites no problem. Among the settings changed on the Thinkpad are some under services.msc, and settings that increase performance by turning off the 3D GUI stuff and going back to Classic Windows settings. Does anyone have any ideas, familiarity with any settings people might make in an attempt to improve performance or security that could also hamper FTP like this?

I turn it on and the Dell Inspiron loading screen comes up then a black screen the WINDOWS XP loading screen comes up, then it gets to the login screen.I believe it's F2 for Dells or delete...yes you would have to change the boot.ini though.OK so I've gotten to the setup screen when I pressed F2. 10971.	Solve : Computer will not complete boot?
Answer» Last night we had thunderstorms roll through our area. We had intermitent power outages and during one of them, I instructed the computer to shut down. In the process of shutting down, we had a power failure that lasted the whole night. Upon getting to my computer this morning, it was going through the startup sequence, WOULD get as far as the boot SCREEN, then power down and go through the whole sequence again. During the next boot up, a screen appeared asking me to SELECT the mode that I last started successfully in and I tried the normal mode. Then it would shut down. I tried booting up in safe mode (one of the options) and again it would re-start itself. I could not get to the windows screen at all. I can get into recovery mode but it says that it will erase all data on the HDD and I have files on there that I need to recover as well. Unfortunately, I did not back up the computer since I got it 2.5 years ago. I opened the cover and started the computer. Cooling fans were running, inside was cleaned out. I did not hear any noise coming from the HDD so I think it is dead. I have Windows XP. The computer is about 2.5 years OLD. Outside of this, I do not have any other information but will be able to get some. Can anyone help with this? Have you tried the 'Last Good Configuration' option in the boot menu?Yes, every option I tried yields the same result. I tried booting it in safe mode with no success as well. I momentarily see the Windows XP logo on the screen and then the computer shuts down and restarts. I can access the recovery mode, but I need to keep some of the files on the computer (i.e. photos, tax documents, etc.) The recovery mode tells me that it will wipe out all of the documents that are one there except for what the mfg put on the HARD drive.

Answer» I've been recently having some computer issues. I'm pretty sure that I've narrowed it down to a single corrupt file. I believe it's called "ntuser.dat" I realize that it is the settings and whatnot for my specific user account. Whenever I try to log onto this profile it comes up with an ERROR stating corrupt user environment. To test my theory I created a spare account and copied this file over.. this resulted in the same errors as the other account. All fresh accounts SEEM to work fine. So what I'm wondering is, if it's possible to create a new user account and just use the ntuser.dat file from there? Is this potentially dangerous to my computer, any side affects of doing this? Is this a GOOD idea? Or is there another more elegant solution to my problems? Any help is welcome =) What is the EXACT error, you're getting?Ok every time I try to log on with the user account "Owner" a pop-up window comes up. It has a 30 second countdown and reads, "User Environment: Windows can not load user profile but has instead logged you on with the default profile Details: Access Denied" Thats the error that pops up, and to note it only pops up on this account any other account works just fine. Usually, they interact, and there is a lot of dependencies inside Windows.I would have to agree with Broni, the NTUSER.DAT file interacts with a few other file on the system providing them with account information and the information on a NTUSER.DAT file will differ from each user account so in effect just replacing the file may actually cause you more issues in the long run. so just transferring the needed data from the profile you think is currupt to a new admin acount (altho it is a longer will) is a safer way to avoid more errors

When I click on the 'index.html' file I get an error message: Windows cannot find 'C:\Documents and Settings\ etc etc. Make sure you typed the name correctly'. SINCE I am actually double-clicking on the file I am hoping to open I do not need to search for it by name. The way the files were set up when I posted my message here was as follows: 1 folder called manin folder with the index.html file and a few associated images inside it. There are 4 folders inside this manin folder. So, inside the main folder I have a 'loose' html index file and 4 images and 4 sub-folders. After posting here, I created a folder to put the index file in (plus the images), but Windows still gives me the error - it can't find the html file that I am actually clicking on. So, I have moved the index file on its own to the desktop and right-clicked it and selected 'Open'. Id does open the page, but I still get the 'cannot find' error! It would not normally bother me, but I am hoping to burn the files to a CD and I am keen for this message not to be reproduced when I do so. Many thanks for any help. Steve

Answer» I have two computers a Gateway and a Dell. Both have XP and both have MICROSOFT Office. When I try to open a file from Excell or Word from a floppy the other computer saved it on, it SAYS there are no FILES on the floppy. Windows EXPLORER does the same. Any Ideas?Did you try USB stick, CD?

10979.	Solve : Can't Access My External Hard Drive?
Answer» My PC would not boot because it was missing the NTLDR or NT Loader, so I tried the standard REPAIR CONSOLE and copying the ntldr from my windows XP CD and it would not copy it. At this point I just switch out the C: Drive with another and reinstalled Windows XP on it. Now Windows is working fine, but I THOUGHT I would just put the old C: drive with XP and all my data on it in a external HD case and access like an external hard drive. I t does show up and it reads the properties, but when I try to open it it says can not access the external drive. Is there anyway or any program that will allow me to access the drive without reformatting it? Thanks for your help. Please post the exact message displayed. If the message indicates that file access is DENIED try taking ownership of the folders/files.

Answer» I just got my computer back from being upgraded with a new MB, ram & Processor. I am currently reinstalling & setting things up LIKE they used to be, but for the life of me I can't get my email to remember my password or to let it show more than one user account on the sign in screen like it used to. I'm sure it'll be some check box setting somewhere that I am unaware of. It's a Window Live (HOTMAIL) account. XP SP3. Can anyone HELP?log in to live mail and check /options/ settings for a clue as to why this is happening. I have noticed CHANGES in hotmail recently and have seen issues ALSO they seem to change over time. It may be a temporary issue.

Answer» I have an Acer laptop Aspire 4710 , was running vista then stopped with an ERROR message [0x0000007b] and i was unable to run vista again. I run Fdisk to format MBR and then repatition the disk then formated the drive , run scandisk to ENSURE the disk was ok. I have tried to load XP pro and have tried Vista but COME up with the same fault , not able to see the hard drive when starting to load xp or vista in. Note i can load 98se in with no faults system works , no faults with the HDD. Do you have legit Windows XP CD, and Vista DVD? Are you trying to boot from those disks? What is exact message?Yes i have legit CD of xp pro with sp2 , Vista and win 98se . Error code as above was sent to microsoft and instuctions were to test for avirus on the MBR if this did not work ,fdisk the Hdd and format it again but still unable to load xp or vista . Fault Message When Loading is . Check for viruses on your computer . remove any newly installed hard drive or hard drive controller make sure it is properly configured and TERMINATED . run chkdsk /f to check hard disk for corruption then restart your computer . Stop: ox0000007b [0xf7a57524 ,0xc0000034 ,0x00000000 ,0x00000000] If i use the seagate disk MANAGER or Fdisk the hard drive then format it no errors come up and all is good checks out ok .Use the Seagate utility to write all zeroes to the drive and try to re-install using Windows also to delete and re-create the partitions... This should work.

But you will EITHER stick with AVG or go over to AVAST if you want it free. But I really don't like AV programs. What we need is a cuter measure program that when it finds a virus it sends a mighty blow to the user who started it! Geek-9pm,Indeed as already stated there are a variety avialable.I have used AVG free,Avast,& Avira free. I currently have Avira installed on both my wife's computers and mine and find them to be very good.They are real time and self updating. The initial subscription is sometimes a bit of a hassle (the registering part--which you must do). Other than that i find it to be the best of the 3 mentioned. However it really comes down to a personal preference thing. truenorthReal time protection sacrifices a ton of resources and is highly over-rated...if you use smart browsing habits it's unneccessary.

Answer» An authorized user on my computer can not log in. When you click on his NAME icon the screen goes black and shows his desk top for a SECOND then goes back to the log in screen. Any fixes or answers why this is HAPPENING?try going in under the admin account, delete his or her account and have them try to log back in. WORST case scenerio, you have to add him or her again

Answer» Hi everyone, I'm needing some HELP. When I turn on my computer I have a message box that pops up with this error message Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\oasbnuqi.dll The specified module could not be found. It started about 3 or 4 days ago. I uninstalled some programs on my computer and ran disk cleanup to free SPACE on my computer the day before it started. Since I started getting the error message my DVD burning programs TAKE 3 times as long to encode movies to be burnt. I dont know if that has anything to do with the error message or not but and kind of help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration'? If that doesn't work maybe 'System Restore' I dont want to sound patronizing, but when you uninstalled your programs were you sure of what you were uninstalling. I take it your running XPI dont know how to do last known good configuration and system restore didnt work. I tried to restore to the day before but when the computer came back on it said system restore could not restore to that day because there havent been any changes made to the system. Yes I know what I was uninstalling, I just got the Nero 9 package and I took off all the other programs that I had for audio and DVD burning since I didnt NEED them anymore and I took off a few games I had on here. Yes I have XP Media Edition, it came installed on my computer when I bought it so I dont have a disk. Re-boot your system and as its starting up press F8 repeatedly until the Safe Mode screen comes up. Then use your arrow keys to select 'Last Known Good.....etc' and press enterI did it and the error message still came up.

Answer» Hi Clever people, I have two computers in the same room and both of them have MICROSOFT Office 2003. If I do a screen print off one of them (my backup comp) it will "paste" into MS Word with no problem (as it should). On the other computer (which is my main one) a screen print when "pasted" produces a rectangle with nothing in it. When I open the clipboard the image is there waiting to be pasted but I am unable to transfer it onto the document. I can paste a screen print into Paint or Wordpad but am still unable to copy and paste that into Word. The same problem happens with CLIPART. I have compared MS Word settings on both comps as I assumed that must be the problem. However, it all seems to be set up in the same way. Both comps are running XP with SP3 and other than this problem both seem to working very well. This is very irritating and I WOULD appreciate the benefit of your knowledge. Answer» I am probably going to FORMAT my Hard Drive this week. is there anything I should know? How long will it take? Probably most important... how do I do it? lol.You will lose all of your data. Make sure you have GOOD backup before you start. Have your drivers disk ready. The first thing you want to do, after the WIPE, is make sure all of your drivers loaded. If you dont have the disk, your computer manufacturers website should have them avaialbe for download. If you have any USB devices make sure you install the driver before the DEVICE! If you have an external hard drive of flash drive unplug them before you wipe out the machine. The very next thing you want to do, after you have all of your drivers, is go to Windows Update and get all of the updates that are available for your computer. You will have to restart a few times but just keep going back untill it stops finding updates. When you do the install make sure you follow this order: 1.Delete partition 2. Create partition 3. In other music players it says there's something WRONG with my audio device. I know that there isn't because I can play audio files in Limewire and hear them. I thought it MIGHT have been an outdated audio driver so I checked for an update but it says I have the latest driver?
