Solve : I have a broken computer in my closet (at my house)?

Answer»

How would I see what KIND of hardware it had? cause I COULD make some money off of it on ebay.I assume this is a Desktop computer?

If so, you will have to remove all the components and parts and identify them individually.
A simple way to do this would be to type in the MODEL numbers and/or labels into Google and see what results it turns up.

If you have never built/taken apart a computer before, I would ask someone else with experience to help you.actually no, it's an '05 laptop. Its charger wire broke. inside. to repair it it was 700$ my new computer was like 1000$ so logically I got that ONE. This sounds like a laptop computer, correct?yes (sorry I was shoveling my face with food)You can look up the make and model on the web....or you could just post the make and model here.
ah, okay, But I only get HOME around 6:40 pm. so it would be a while.DLoad and install and run Everest Home...
It will tell you more info than you need to know...Quote

No need to apologize. I am rather fond of doing that, too. Sorry for jumping in on your post Alias, but Patio, thanks for that Everest link. Really brill. Will probably never use it, but then again you never know!
WTC Unless you want to take the laptop apart, you don't need to know what the individual parts are. Just the laptop model.Quote from: willythecat on May 15, 2009, 04:43:36 PM

Solve : wont start up?

Answer»

I get a black screen error message asking for normal start up etc. When I click on normal start up it does not do anything. It will not start up under normal, safe mode etc. ANY IDEAS??What OPERATING System are you using?

Are you able to enter into Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

If yes, then enter the command prompt and type: rstrui.exe

Hit enter and see if it will restore your system

edit: uh, I meant: %systemroot%\system 32\restore\rstrui.exe 1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
Emachines T6520 OS is XP. I do not want to erase my hard drive. If I use the operating cd it will erase everything correct?
Tried starting in safe mode, it scrolls through ALOT of windows registry, I think, then goes back to black screen asking how I want to start it.
When Starting Windows Normally is chosen it just cycles back to black screen. One vicious circle. Is it the HD or motherboard that is bad? Can not get to boot from CD. CD drive starts up but doesn't kick in. Just KEEPS going to the start window normal screen.
Repair Install of XP

Done properly all your data and apps will be intact...
Dine improperly your apps and data will be GONE but you will have a clean install of XP.

I suggest reading it thru and printing out a copy for reference. If I am not comfortable with repairing, Would i be safer to buy a new HD install os using the OS disc and putting old hd into an external enclosure and pull files off it?Yes.
That's a good seond option....
Everyone could use an extra HDD....

However after you have retrieved your data i would run the repair install....that way you will have the experience for down the road.Quote

The problem was beacuse source location was not specified by me correctly.Silly me:)
I think I have another silly issue. This used to work all the while but accidently the .bat file got deleted & I had to create a new one. I want to rename the file to the system date. I'm using:
for /f "tokens=5 delims=/ " %%d in ("%date%") do rename "C:\DATA" %%e-%%f-%%g

Any idea why the file isn't renamed?
Help is much appreciated.

You need to give us a little more info.
What browser are you using? (Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Firefox, Opera, etc.)
The white you mention is this the BACKGROUND color on the web pages you visit? Or is it white no matter what backgroundcolor the web page has?

Solve : Keyboard/shortcut problem?

Answer» HI,

I don't know what i may have pressed on my KEYBOARD but now every time i press the left arrow - a calculator comes up. up arrow - my computer comes up. right arrow seems to REFRESH this page and the smaller shift key brings up a favorites bar at the right of my page whilst in firefox. The BIGGER shift key acts as an enter key and moves a line down when i type.

I'm running a virus scan to see if its that just to be sure. I am hoping I've simply enabled some sort of hot key shortcut thing. ANY help to get RID of this will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Solve : Does the view that one selects for folders affects memory usage??

Answer»

Does the view that one selects for folders affects memory usage?

The views are Thumbnails, Tiles, Icon, LIST, and Details.

I have selected the view according to the type of file for some of the folders, for example the My Pictures folder I use the Thumbnail view, for the document files I use Icon, but for some I use list. The rest I have accepted happenstance. In the folder view for non-image files I like the list view; I can easily see all that is in the folder with that view. But I dont really need the Thumbnails view as the default for any folder since it can be changed temporarily when needed.

Which View uses the least memory? Simple answer, yes.I assume that the list view consumes less. Am I right?Correct.
I ascending order...
List
Details
Icon
Tiles
ThumbnailsIf you want to experiment with this yourself then open the task manager and find the explorer.exe process. Then open a folder and change between the views. You will see that the amount of memory explorer.exe consumes will change according to the view you select.Thank you all. One of the things that bugged me about XP Pro was the eye candy, most of which I turned off. I did keep
Smooth edges of screen fonts
Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

I kept the visual styles to keep friends and relatives from bothering me. They believed that something must be wrong with my computer because of the grey. It seemed a minor sell-out. They don't seem to notice that everything, except these three, are off. I have enough RAM, but my utilitarian soul prevails. I didn't buy a computer for decoration. I don't use themes or such foolishness. I got rid of all the games except Solitaire, Hearts, and Pinball; I did install Clickomania, addictive game, and Space Invaders. I know, I'm retro. These games are my only foolishness.

Permit me this added question. I know now, Deerpark, I can see difference by the method you explained. Which start menu uses less memory, the XPerience one or the Classic? These may seem minor configuration changes after the major ones like disabling unnecessary services, uninstalling Telnet (also for security reasons), and using low RAMprint apps like NOD32, and other apps written in Assembly language or partially in Assembly. If you know of some apps in Assembly for XP please let me know. You can't say an app is memory efficient or use less memory just because it is written in assembly. Actually not much software today is written entirely in assembly because, first of all good assembly code is hard to develop and second of all modern compilers for high level languages like C++ can automatically produce highly optimized, efficient machine code that it would take ages to get by manually optimizing assembly code. You are right, though Gibson's little apps are in Assembly and you can find programs in it here

http://www.picofactory.com/

I was told that NOD32 is partially Assembly. That is probably why it has a smaller RAMprint.

And, unfortunately, some viruses are written in it too.

I forgot to add that Assembly programming language uses FEWER processing cycles to do something. Can the higher languages match this?AsseQuote from: SaintSatinStain on November 21, 2007, 11:24:51 AM

I forgot to add that Assembly programming language uses fewer processing cycles to do something. Can the higher languages match this?
Not true. Good c++ code (or similar high performance language) and a good compiler can produce machine code that can compare to that of the best assembly code. Of course there are more factors that play in. Some high level languages focus more on speed than others. The skill of the programmers coding the app have a tremendous influence on the performance and so on.
Basically all I'm trying to say is that you can't say that because program a is written in language x it is going to be faster or have a smaller memory footprint than program b written in language y. It just isn't that simple.

And don't EVEN get me started on Gibson. I was talking about Gibson's helpful little programs. I installed XP Pro on my aunt's computer - she's 91 now, was 89 when I bought her a computer- and his little programs are great for her. I dig into the registry, services, other PLACES under the hood; She works on the surface, so some programs you and I may not need she NEEDS. She does email, sends some pictures, instant message grandkids, and reads some newspapers on the 'net. I got her more RAM than I have, but still need programs with low memory use. The Gibson apps and ones from PicoFactory allow her do some adjusting without digging into the OS. All of her security is automatic and emails me if she gets a virus. Her av is NOD43, of course, which has some Assembly, Prevx2 etc.
Yeah, some are in other languages. Seems most Assembly code is for internals and drivers and not for desktop utilities, or put with other code. Well written code in other languages can be tight and speedy, but my daughter, and engineer with an aerospace company (I have to brag. She is stunningly beautiful, a genius, and nice daughter), and a physicist, former colleague at a college where I taught poetry and prosody, told me that in Assembly you can write tighter programs. One problem with Assembly is that it is tied to particular computing environments: each variant will only work in a particular milieu. I have to confess that I'm new to this; I've just begun to learn a couple of languages. So my word is half a grain. Most of the programs that I use have a low RAMprint and almost all are not in Assembly; although I constantly search for programs in it or have some of the code. An architect friend uses some programs in Assembly.

Some of what you say is true, but all factors considered, accepting some limitations of Assembly, it has the potential and actuality to, if the programmer is talented, produce tighter code.

Solve : Windows 'Open With....' application/process?

Answer»

I want to open the above application/process using a shell function within MS Access. Can anyone help what type of application file name it is? Is it an .exe file or a .dll or something else.

I'd be grateful for any help on thisI am not sure what you are trying to do. Can you give us some more information? Do you want to add access to the open with list?

No I'm not trying to add Access to the Open With.... list. I want to be able to open the 'Open With...' function from whilst the MS Access. I have managed to get Access to open a file contained within the database and it opens with the associated program eg. Word doc automatically opens with MS Word.

However sometimes it is necessary to open the file with an alternative application if it can't recognise the default setting. So I want to be able to call the Open With... facility to do that.

Hope this is clearer?

Unfortunately these settings are Global....you cannot change it for a specific file.Ok thx for your help
No Problem...
Stop by ANYTIME and Welcome Aboard ! !IF your trying to display open with, you can probably insert this procedure into your Access VBA code:

Code: [Select]
Private Type SHELLEXECUTEINFOA
cbSize As Long
fMask As Long
hwnd As Long
lpVerb As String
lpFile As String
lpParameters As String
lpDirectory As String
nShow As Long
hInstApp As Long
' fields
lpIDList As Long
lpClass As String
hkeyClass As Long
dwHotKey As Long
hIcon As Long
hProcess As Long
End Type

Private Declare Function GetCurrentProcess Lib "kernel32.dll" () As Long

Private Declare Function ShellExecuteEx Lib "shell32.dll" (ByRef lpExecInfo As SHELLEXECUTEINFOA) As Long

Public Function OpenWith(ByVal FilePath As String, optional ByVal HwndOwner As Long=0,Optional ByVal Icon As Long = 0) As Long

Dim sei As SHELLEXECUTEINFOA
Dim verba As String
verba = "openas"
sei.hIcon = Icon
sei.hProcess = GetCurrentProcess()
sei.hInstApp = App.hInstance

sei.lpVerb = verba
sei.lpFile = FilePath
sei.nShow = vbNormalFocus
sei.cbSize = Len(sei)

OpenWith = ShellExecuteEx(sei)

'Stop

End Function

to call the function, pass in the filename, and optionally a hwnd (from a access form, for example) as well as an icon, if desired. the default icon is usually sufficient.

Additionally, I'm not sure if the "App" object in VB6 is available or the same as it would be in an Access application; I'm certain there is an alternative, however. To BC_Programmer.

Thank you very much indeed. It did the trick - top manExcellent! glad to be of help! I believe, because this was in the "Windows" rather then programming SECTION, other MEMBERS concluded that you wanted to change the association for a specific file, when in fact you wanted to display the DIALOG in your program. Solve : hal.dll missing - need to reinstall?

Answer»

I have Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, Windows XP Pro.

Laptop will not boot up, so I am following instructions on Dell site here http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=6926D01F5744169CE040AE0AB6E14CD3&docid=117590#4. What could be more simple I hear you cry.....

When I get to 'dos' screen I get the prompt C:\> , I think I need C:\WINDOWS> - is this correct? How do I do that?

I tried CD \WINDOWS - but I get message 'access denied' - (there are no passwords on the computer)

? help, I am sure tis must be easy to do try typing: cd windows

instead of cd \windows

edit: my appologies, after pressing "R" to get to the recovery console, press "1" and enter to select what HARDDRIVE you wish to access. Then if there is no Admin. password simply press enter. You will then automatically be at C:\Windows>
You then need to change to the root directory by typing cd \ and pressing enter. That's it, up to about half way, follow the rest of the instructions here:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=6926D01F5744169CE040AE0AB6E14CD3&docid=117590#4

Just be sure to click on the Windows XP button to correctly select which Operating System you are trying to fixWhen booting from CD, after clicking 'R', I do not get the option of selecting '1' - the dos screen simply goes straight to this prompt:

C:\>

- if I try cd windows or cd\windows , I get the message 'Access is denied'

Windows XP Repair Install:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmCripes - thats too complex for me!

Will I lose my data if I do a 'repair install' ?

Why can't I change directory to windows on the dos screen?

Quote

Why can't I change directory to windows on the dos screen?
Either somehow you're doing it wrong, you're not where you think you are, or...you just can't.

Just follow the Repair Install steps and it should all be fine.

You could LOOK here too. It still requires the Windows CD, but there are options to use the Recovery console instead of a Repair Install.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477

Note: Your files will be safe with Repair Install. Repair install does not touch your programs or personal data.aYou said in that other topic you have been resetting Windows to Factory Settings.

Have you tried resetting it now? Does the problem continue? On past experience ie the 3 times I have reset to factory settings - the computer is ok for a month, then I seem to get another issue.

I have not reset to factory settings this time because I am coming to the conclusion that perhaps the hard drive is to blame ? - that is why I started a new topic, to which I did'nt get a reply before topic was closed

Do you think an old hard drive can cause problems like this?

I cant use the XP Recovery console as there is no POSSIBILITY of me changing to the Windows directory - searching the web this seems to be a common issue, possibily something to do with security settings.

However, I have followed the link to the microsoft site. Under 'Error Message 3', I think this best describes my situation. It also says:
Additionally, you may experience one or more of the following behaviors:

* If you start the computer to the Recovery Console, a command prompt may appear with no option to log on to the Windows installation.
* If you try to access the Windows FOLDER, you may receive the following error message:
Access denied.
* If you try to perform a Repair operation from the Windows XP CD-ROM, the Windows installation is not detected and you cannot repair Windows.

Since it says 'you cannot repair Windows' - does this mean I have to reinstall or reset to factory settings anyway (and lose my data)?

Or - if I use the 'set up Windows XP' option when booting from the cd will this work without losing my data?

Hope you can follow this it seems to have got a bit complicated! I am now trying a Reinstall via the boot cd.

When I get to the 'repair' bit, windows is not detected on C: What I get is

C: Partiton2 (NTFS) 73140MB (62490 MB free)

I do not get an option to 'Repair' - so I guess this means the easiest thing for me to try is reset to factory settings again.

This means I will have to take the hard drive out to recover my important data (but on a positive note I only know how to do that cos you guys on here TOLD me how to do it some time ago )

thank you all for helpingedit: sorry, I did this before your post above.
The phrase "hal.dll missing" can be called a"Red Herring."

The boot loader does not do an search for the item. It just expects it to be in a certain place. Either you or someone or something has either moved the file, not likely, or has altered the information about the location. The later is often the case with poor quality Portion management software. Or individuals who modify the BOOT.INI file and do not know how to count partitions.

You suspect the hard drive? Hard Drive dysfunction happens more often that what most people realize. The simple answer is to start using you backup hard drive. Everybody should have a backup hard drive. Cost less that a bunch of diagnostic programs that only tell you what you learn by using a spare Hard Drive.

(For FREE diagnostics, to the the Se agate or Western Digital sites.)

Red Herring - I do see what you mean.

The computer was ok yesterday, and just was wrong when it was turned on the next day.

Nobody here (including me) knows enough about computers to start fiddling around with them!

I just wondered if it could be a 'worn out' hard drive. Here is a unpublished, I think, trick to reduce some kinds of hard drive start up errors.
Set up your BIOS to boot in this order:
floppy drive
CD-Drive
Hard Drive

Do not put in a floppy.
But do put the Install CD into the CD-Drive.
When it says "Press and key to boot CD" keep you fingers on the keyboard and wait.
It will boot the hard drive.

If not. Power off, wait ten seconds, try again.

If that works for you, just keep doing that until you get a new drive. You may also want to replace the drive cable. In a few cases it can be a Power supply issue that weakens the hard drive's ability to work well.

Solve : desktop problem?

When you turn it on, TAP the f8 key and when you come to the menu, SELECT "LAST known good configuration"cant turn it on its litterly dead, friend said i blew the power source maybehave you tried plugging it into another wall outlet?yea tryed diffrent surge protecters tohave you opened it up to VERIFY that the power supply is correctly fastened to the board, and other cable/wires?yea pushed down on them nothing seems loose
This is probably a long shot, but ask your friend if you can borrow his power supply temporarily, out of his computer. Make sure it is equal or greater wattage.

If you can get your computer to start up, then you'll know that you simply need to order a power supply...If it doesn't start up, then your problem is likely related to the mother board, in which you will need a new one.
If the the other power supply doesn't work, check your motherboard for burst or leaking capacitors.

Solve : Video running fast forward? weird?

I have strange problem. I have a home built desktop I use for a small office. It works really well has a gigabite board with dual processors and is running xp pro. The other day it started running videos at fast forward. Very odd. Maybe someone clicked something they wasn`t supposed to? It does it both on internet explorer and google chrome so its not the browser. What do you think? Is it just flash (internet) videos? Yes it is the internet videos. I have not tried any dvds.Update
I uninstalled the adobe flash player and reinstalled it and it still does it. Also you can not HEAR SOUND from the streaming radio sties... I booted the system from the xp pro disk about 6 months ago. At the time it worked fine. There has been some dispatch programs INSTALLED but it did not seem to start having problems untill recently. I am a novice that has been building my own for 6 or 7 years sometimes think I should give up but the oem stuff isnt much better... Wow stumped the gurus? Did not think that was possible. Well thanks for trying maybe I will look into the sound drivers.Well I had time to play with it today and found that the audio and video drivers were uninstalled. Thats strange they were there before. I grabed my drivers cd and after a couple of trys got them all reloaded. But audio still does not work at all and there is no volume control at the bottom of the screen. When I go back to the hardware page there is a ? on the audio device on HIGH defifnition audio bus. I went into windows update and it downloaded a audiodriver but still nothing. Maybe my onboard sound died? i had a similar thing when i tried to play Postal 2 (not on any other game)
it just ran it on a fast-forwarded speed. very strange. i can't help you though, sorry, i myself had to reinstall windows to make it run properly Ok I know there is a easy answer to this but... How do I save this to a text file without retyping it? Hmm Am I going crazy or just senile? Someone had posted a text document that I was supposed to copy to my reg but now it is gone. Was that a virus or something that was deleted?
Very confused....Reg files need to be right clicked and select merge....
No copy/paste involved.Hi Frige it was me. I deleted the message because I'm worried you may do it wrong and screw your COMPUTER up. Your not going mad.Never post reg fixes without proper instructions on how to safely backup the Registry...Hence Patio that I deleted my own message...

Solve : re-install all codec?

Answer»

is it possible some codec files RUINOUS ? You should note. in general, the video that the avi file contain can be divx or XVID are types of avi files, therefore if you have only divx codec, you are not going to be able to play xvid files. Having said that....

1. Like I say earlier, please go download and install klite codec pack, it will be able to get you playing almost all common video file type there. I have not had problem playing back many video files including the mp4, h.264, avi (which include divx and xvid), wmv, mkv, just to name few unless the video is broken or conversion has issues or something that MEANS that video is garbage. I have not tested 3gp files only because i don't have 3gp cell phone to use those files with but I expect klite codec pack to handle them as well.

2. In addition, keep the divx codec you already have installed, and also install xvid codec; keep these stand alone codecs installed on pc to be sure if you ever need convert video to those type of files, you don't get a video output that has no PICTURE.

3. If klite codec pack, during installation, tell you something about disabling or uninstalling divx and or the xvid codec (the stand alone codecs) because it detect that klite codec pack already can handle those files, don't uninstall the divx or xvid but it is fine to disable. I don't remember exactly what the message said but it's something like that.

Once you do that, I am very very very certain that you will have almost no difficulty playing back almost all the major video file types if the video is not broken and also klite codec pack is updated routinely so you always can get it up to date and during installation of new version, it will ask if you want to uninstall old version to prevent problem or conflicts and say yes to it and life go on without problem.

Lastly, klite codec pack come with the media player classic, it is a very good media player and if it attempt to play a video file but video is broken or unplayable, error message of "cannot render this file" should appear in the media player somewhere near the playback button. But if you like window media player that is bundled with windows, then go for it, window media player will use the same codecs that the klite codec pack has installed to your machine.

Sorry this is kind of long message but if you try it out, I am certain you'll be a HAPPY video watcher like I am

Solve : remote connecting using MSTSC?

Answer»

Recently I changed my residential ISP from ADSL2 to Australia's Bigpond cable with a Motorola SBG Wireless Surfboard Gateway modem. I have never had any problem connecting to my office using MSTSC until the change to Bigpond. When i try to connect I get the typical unhelpful MS type error message: "Remote Desktop Connection > Remote Desktop Disconnected > This computer can't connet to the remote computer. Try connecting again. if problem continues contact the owner of the remote computer or your network ADMINISTRATOR." Could there be something in the modem settings that is blocking my remote attempts to connect or is it settings at my ISP. any help is appreciated, Regards, GuberMake sure that the computer that your trying to connect to, has Remote Desktop enabled. Thanks for your reply.
I have been connecting remotely to the office computer for several years and no problem via Aistralian ISP TPG ADSL2+. I connected yesterday with the same laptop [notebook] through a neigbour's ISP not Bigpond on ADSL2+ and no problem. Then I try connecting with the Australian Telstra Bigpond cable and though I can surf the Net, get emails in and out I cannot get remote connection. Other members of my team can remote connect to my office. Help! You should CALL Bigpondthanks to all that offered suggestions to deal with my problem.
The last suggestion was that I should call Bigpond. needless to say that was my first call followed by at least 6 more calls to them and none of which was helpful and the last one was diverted to their outsourced techo service that wanted to book a service call at $149AUD. bigpond utterly useless.
I also checked with my Anti-virus softare SUPPLIER and they were helpful and checked to ensure that their PRODUCT hadn't caused any issue for me.
I also called Motorola the manufacturer of the Cable wifi Modem supplied by Bigpond. Motorola were scathing of Bigpond whom they said was fully trained by Motorola to support the Motorola Modem. Motorola passed me to a no charge techo who was patient, supportive and helpful. He made several suggestions one of which worked to alleviate my problem. the issue was the modem firewall that was set to high. I lowered the firewall security level and bingo got connected to my office.

Glad you got it FIXED

Solve : Power Options?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4700C. Under "Settings" is " "Power Options." I have instructed my computer to

1) Turn off MONITOR after 1 min.
2) Turn off disk after 3 min.

Neither one of these features works. My computer had a hibernation feature and a standbye feature but after I reloaded MS XP those options went away. I tried to USE my other option (above) but it did not work. Is there something in the BIOS that I must change? I want to be able to turn off my hard disk without totally shutting down the computer. Those are pretty aggresive settings.
However any background running processes will interrupt ant power settings such as email phonong home for updates ETC......and my final answer about power saving features in case of a desktop: don't use it... Where have i heard that before ? ?WebMD

Solve : Somebody is watching me when I'm using my computer?

Hi there,
I'm just wandering somebody is watching me on my computer cause he/she knows what website i'm on & ABLE to track my activities on my computer. Is there an illegal software THATS been downloaded in my system ? help is appreciated. Thanks. Why do you think someone is watching you?Sounds like you have a "keylogger" installed in your computer. Not an area of expertise for me, so I can't offer much advise except to say you'll find lots of info if you do an Internet SEARCH (Google, MSN, etc.) on detecting keyloggers. For example, Spyware, viruses, & security : Detecting and Removing Key Loggers and RATs.

Do you have any spyware REMOVAL tools installed? I BELIEVE some of them may detect some keyloggers, but I'm not sure about this.

Stay tuned; someone else will come by with further advise.Who is he/she?how is he/she telling you that they are watching you?

System --- HP dx2255M
OS --- WindowsXP Professional SP2
AV ---- Symantec EPP

I checked this and other forums from last 2 to 3 days so many posting on the same issue is this a virus ..... Is it automatically restarting, shuting down completely, or just logging off back to the log in screen? Do you recall adding/removing any hardware or software or updates when the problem first occured?

i did that too.. its no use....You did what, "too"?

Try booting your computer into Safe Mode With COMMAND Prompt

If you are successful type this at the command prompt:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press Enter and give it a few moments to POP up!

Then select a restore point to before last Saturday, or before the problem existed.
When/if your computer is successfully restored, update your anti-virus definitions, download and RUN, Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy...But be sure not to install the Spybot TeaTimer, while doing the installation!

Solve : Memory left shown in system tray?

Answer»

I have USED an application TClock for YEARS without any problems. I got a new computer for my SON with 4GB of ram. Now TClock show memory left as 2047Mb, fixed. Task manager shows different values. I think the top limit for TClock is 2047Mb. My other computers all have 1Gb or less, and TClock here works o/k.

Does anyone know how I could fix TClock or know of another application that shows the amount of memory left in the system tray?
ThanksWhat OS? And what are the specs of your machine?

If it is only TClock mis-reporting your RAM i wouldn't worry about it...
Yes, it is just misreporting ram left. But, why have a number in the system tray, that is wrong?

The machine is Windows XP Pro SP3 with 4Gb ram.

Solve : Shutdown Bluescreen?

Answer»

I have an older computer, when shutdown is clicked, it will restart. I went under start up and recovery, and unchecked the restart on system failure. After I went to shut it down it bluescreened and gave me the error message of driver_irql_or_less_or_equal.
And the error message at the bottom said cx88avd.sys. And since the computer is mainly used for ipod charging, and loading new songs on it, when I opened iTunes, and tried to copy in a new CD, it shutdown on me.

The problem is that this is my parents computer, and I have been away from home for a while, and am not entirely SURE what they did to it. To the best of my knowledge no new hardware or software has been installed, and the only thing that it is used for is for my parents ipods. I have run anti virus scans, and registry scans, and played with just about every setting that I could. Can SOMEONE point me in the right direction so that I do not have to REFORMAT the computer?Windows version? Hardware specs? Complete error message?

Only then will anyone be able to really help.Windows XP Pro
768 megs of ram
Athlon 2000
Nvidia FX 5500

And the bluescreen error message:

Cause of the error
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

And the technical information

STOP 0x0000000D, 0x00000048, 0x0000000F, 0x00000001, 0xF7C87000

If you get the same error it is most likely your RAM. You can try to PULL it out and reseat it than run a RAM test.

If you don't get the error than one of the cards you pulled out maybe bad. Keep putting one back in at a time and rebooting until you get the error again.

Solve : Icons????

Answer»

Sorry am new to this but wondering if anyone can help? I have a Sony Vaio that have had major problems with recently virus etc. Have got it completely wiped, now runs Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3, installed McAfee & RegCure. Pentium 4 CPU 3.06GHz 512MB RAM. Everything has been just fine for a few days but when i turned it on yesterday virtually everything has the same icon (White box with thick blue top stripe) windows update, remote assistance, calculator, command prompt, NOTEPAD, paint, volume control, wordpad, etc, etc, etc??? What on earth is the problem? Any help would be very much appreciated. ThanksHm... as a test, create a new account, and see if the icons come back, or stay broken. The thing is thats another thing thats happened. For first few days after wipe when turning on it got to a choice page admin or me, now it just asks for a password so UNABLE to get to admin user it doesnt let you change user. Just asks for password for me. Thanks considering this install is only a few days old, it might be easier just to try again. Unless you really want to debug everything...Would love to de-bug everything but wouldnt know where to start. As for 'trying' again do you mean WIPING again? This aint an option cost £90 took back several times. Not going againand get that RegCure off your pc. It's not really that great. I'd be using registryfix or Advanced SystemCare by Iobit if you're to be fixing your registry but in all honesty, leave that registry alone unless it's causing you problems.

Deleting an incorrect item in registry can cause pc to stop working so you know ....i agree get regcure out of your pc

Solve : Any Advice on trying Linux 3.7??

Greetings,

I was given a "no INSTALL" LINUX disk which runs from the CD. The CD says says "Powered by KNOPPIX Linux 3.7".

I have always been curious about using Linux and would like to experiment with it. (some people I have even heard say that once they learned Linux they preferred it over Windows)

Question: Is it safe to try this in my COMPUTER or am I risking problems by letting it boot up the computer from the disc drive? ( I am running XP Home) Any comments would be appreciated because, as I mentioned before, deliberately inducing nasty problems into my computer results in hair tearing and I need all I got already.

Solve : opening pptx files from ppt 2003?

Hello: I work at a university and a student has sent me a pptx file. My ppt 2003 says: Can't read file. No text converter is installed .

I use Windows XP service pack 3; my Office is 2003.

Also, it seems that my VERSION of windows that came when i bought the computer was not authentic. When I try to upload things from the MS site, they give me all sorts of notices, popups about inauthenticity, etc. So I don't think I would be able to get an update from them. Can I?

Hello: I work at a university and a student has sent me a pptx file. My ppt 2003 says: Can't read file. No text converter is installed .

Download the converter from microsoft website. Link here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

You shoud now be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 and pptx is the default powerpoint filetype for office 2007.

Thank you for responding. Actually, I already have the file converter and have no problem converting docx files. But for some reason, the pptx file just won't come through. I also went to the microsoft page and downloaded the PPT 2007 reader, HOPING that would help. But no luck so far.

I wrote to the student and asked her to send the file through again. Maybe a fresh copy will help! I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the help.

In peace

Dr. D. http://www.zamzar.com/

Try above website, it says it's able to convert pptx to ppt. I've have never used that website before except to convert images from one filetype to another. The image filetype conversion worked successfully, so I think it should work fine if pptx file not broken.

Also you might want to ask student to resave file as ppt format before resending you? That way it will already be in correct format for you and if powerpoint file is not sent to you broken then you should see it fine.

Do you have volume license key of windows XP? Maybe too many people REGISTER windows xp with same key so microsoft did not like it so you see all the notices about non authentic windows and unfortunately, windows update not WORKING properly if non authentic windows detected by MS. (Ask your university's computer center for help if your windows copy come from university)Go here...

Alan <>< Thank you all for helping. The problem is solved. What I did was that I downloaded the ppt 07 viewer, and I already had the text converter. Still no go. So I asked to have the attachment sent through again, this time to my gmail instead of university mail, and everything worked out. So I think the university system garbled the file!

Thanks for everyone for helping. Over and out.

Solve : Flash Drive Partition?

Answer»

Quote from: BC_Programmer on MAY 19, 2009, 08:06:11 PM

that would be why NTFS is not AVAILABLE. No matter, though, since you wouldn't be able to encrypt it anyway.
But can you give me step by step instructions on how to do this (as if I was a total idiot who knew nothing about computers), as in adding partitions and making some inaccessible?

Aparently...I can't delete the partition on my flashdrive, even after "flipping" it...Right-Click on the partition in diskmgmt.msc, "Change drive letter and paths."I got a real easy solution, Trucrypt. It makes an image and OPENS it as a virtual encrypted disk. You can use just about any known encryption and well, its just cool!

Only problem is you need Administrator rights on the computer in order to unencrypt and open it as a drive. Other than that you can name the image FILE anything and make encrypted passwords ect.

http://www.truecrypt.org/Simple solution: Get ANOTHER flash drive.

Now you have another one for whatever you want to put on there . Instead of having to encrypt the porn drive you can just keep it away from prying eyes by keeping it in your pocket.

Oh yeah, another thing: When your done with the other drive, make sure you clear out the "my recent documents". CCleaner works well for this. I can't delete the partition...but I can delete the drive letter. How can I delete the partition and add 2 in its place?

How would they be able to do this if you were to keep the drive in your possession all the time ? ?Quote from: patio on May 20, 2009, 06:04:11 AM

I really don't want to keep 2 flash drives with me, that's just more chance to lose it.

Solve : Need help with a batch?

Answer»

We are implementing sharepoint next monday but I have a problem. it seems that every time i want to open an office document, like excel or word from sharepoing IE opens it instead of the native program. I need to create a batch that will change the registry keys automatically when a user logs in.

I basically need a batch file that will do the following for me:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To configure Internet Explorer to open Office files in the appropriate Office program by editing the Windows registry, set the BrowserFlags DWORD value to 8 (or 9 for Microsoft Excel worksheets) for the appropriate document type. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and then CLICK the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
3. Locate the subkey for the specific Office document type. The following table lists the SUBKEYS for several common Office document types. Document Type Subkey
----------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Excel 7.0 worksheet Excel.Sheet.5
Microsoft Excel 97 worksheet Excel.Sheet.8
Microsoft Excel 2000 worksheet Excel.Sheet.8
Microsoft Word 7.0 document Word.Document.6
Microsoft Word 97 document Word.Document.8
Microsoft Word 2000 document Word.Document.8
Microsoft Project 98 project MSProject.Project.8
Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 document PowerPoint.Show.8
To locate the subkey for a document type that is not included in this table, find the subkey for the EXTENSION that is associated with the document type. The (default) value for that subkey contains the NAME of the subkey for that document type. For example, the .xls extension is associated with Excel worksheets. Under the .xls subkey, the (default) value contains the string "Excel.Sheet.5." Therefore, the subkey for the Microsoft Excel Worksheet document type is the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.Sheet.5
4. After you identify the subkey for the specific Office document type, add the following value for all subkeys except Excel.Sheet.5:
Value name: BrowserFlags
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value: 8
For Excel.Sheet.5, add the following value:
Value name: BrowserFlags
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value: 9
5. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i have never worked with regisrtry stuff. sorryWhatcha need to do is edit the registry of an account to GET it the way you like. Then, highlight any keys you changed and export them to a .reg file. Give that reg key to other accounts (or put it in the Public folder) and have them run it. It'll copy the "fixed" entries into their account. You can edit the registry if you go to Command Prompt and type 'reg /?'

Solve : Got a toshiba laptop?

Answer»

My daughter uses it to do her homework, and yesterday while on the laptop, she I guess got BORED and started messing around with the control panel. And le and behold she changed the password and now cant remember it.

Is there any way of getting it BACK? I know on desktops you can reset bios jumpers, does the same approach work here or is there a good password retrieval software tool?
See Here...

If it's a BIOS password you will have to take it to a Toshiba service center and show proof of ownership. You need to contact Toshiba right away.
Some models may have a wireless connection that will report back to Toshiba if anybody try to open the machine after a password failure. It is a feature called "chassis intrusion". It you are the real owner, there is no problem, you are on file with them. Just call the 800 number are tell them who you are and read the serial number of the laptop.

If you don't do that right away, the FBI will track down the laptop with GPS and come knocking on your door. You should have read this in the instruction manual. Take a look in the manual ans see if it has this feature.

Hoe this helps.

EDIT: Oops, Patio posted firs. Ignore what I said.
Just do NOT open the case!

I find this deeply implausible.
implausible? Cmon you know computers do give headaches and most of them are caused by operator error.
control panel has nothing to do with BIOS passwords.Quote from: shashgo on May 18, 2009, 09:13:23 PM

That "my kid changed the password" story is a very common one. To change the password the person has to 1. Know the old password 2. Type the new password twice correctly. It is very hard to do accidentally.
patio: its not a BIOS password, its the administrator password. ILL try the stuff in your links. Im going to try mustardo first. wish me luck

Solve : Sample?

Answer»

Each time I am turning off my computer, a window is open telling me that a program is not responding. This program is called Sample. The computer will not turn off untill I click on 'END NOW' button.

What can it be? and What can I do to find out?

The reason I mostly want to know because I am suspecting in it that it is giving me problems to install a certain probem.

Thanks people Wouldn't happen to be a Dell would it?

I've heard of this before, and it always seems to be a Dell computer that is having the problem. Anyhow, here's a thread on Dellcommunity.com which addresses it, might be a good place to start.

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=latit_general&message.id=34147Thankx Quaxo.

No its not a Dell, its a TOSHIBA Laptop. I formatted it because i wanted to upgrade to XP Pro, and from then onwards this problem started....

I ll have a LOOK at this.

Tnks again.Sure thing, let us know if that helps or not. If not, we'll dig a bit deeper and see if we can't get that fixed.I found out that that problem was CAUSED by a process ZCfgSvc.exe. I ended this process and the error didn t occur. Also when the process was not running, i could install the program i wanted.
The problem i have now is that i cannot delete the process, i.e. prevent it from running from start up.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks Quaxo Try this:

Go to Start --> Run and type 'msconfig'

A window will pop up. Click the 'Startup' tab and untick the program in the list'Quote

Zero Config MFC Application, part of Intel's ProSET utilities and installed by the drivers for many of Intel wireless network cards - essential to the proper functioning of many of the Intel ProSET utilities (but not all) and these System Tray ProSET utilities are a must if you are using your wireless connection, if only so you know when the signal is fading or dropping. The problem is that, in some PCs, ZCFGSVC can be incredibly badly behaved : taking up to 100% of CPU time and therefore resulting in an extremely slow PC, preventing the installation of software or Windows updates, or CAUSING "Not Responding" or "End this Program" shutdown problems. If you experience this, try first the very latest drivers from Intel or your laptop manufacturer. If that still does not solve the problem and you have WinXP/2003, try setting the "Wireless Zero Configuration" SERVICE to disabled.

Solve : load library error?

Answer»

I have been getting a load library error when XP loads my desktop. It started a couple of DAYS ago while my girlfriend was surfing the internet I guess. The desktop loads and then I get the pop-up window saying that the C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\All Users\Application Data\wdejojyl.dll module cannot be found. Then the desktop icons flash on and off or it just freezes up. I am running XP Pro Home Edition with no restore disks. I have XP Pro Student Edition on disc as well as Grub and a couple of Linux distro's. Also my only way to connect my computer to the internet is by using my phone as a modem. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Welcome aboard

I suspect some infection, because search for "wdejojyl.dll" yields nothing.
Get HijackThis: http://majorgeeks.com/Trend_Micro_HijackThis_d5554.html
and post its log at "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forum. Thanks for the welcome Broni. I don't know if I can post anything on MajorGeeks through my phone (I'll try and see). In the mean time, do you know how to make pdanet work with the other OS (Linux Mint) on my computer? I have vaccess manager for verizon so I can use my phone as a modem. I haven't been able to get either of them to work with the Linux OS though. And my XP Pro Student Edition disc won't boot up. I was thinking about INSTALLING that in place of XP Pro but I can't get that to work either. Thanks for the welcome and the reply.Quote

No, no....you download HijackThis from their site, and you post HijackThis log here, on this board, just in "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forum:

[saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Ooooh....thanks Broni........I don't think that will work though because I only have my phone for internet now that the pc is messed up.It's a very small file....under 400KBBroni just as I thought, I cannot download HiJack This via my phone.....Have someone grab it for you and throw it on a flash drive...install it from there. You can even use floppy...Thanks Broni, that's a good idea. The problem with that though is I don't know anyone around here with a pc and internet. And because of the desktop icons flashing on and off, it's very difficult to open a file or program. Why can't you?
Quote
Also my only way to connect my computer to the internet is by using my phone as a modem
If your desktop is disturbing, you can try Safe Mode.what about a public library. they will put it on disk for you very cheaply. you might have to become a member of the library thoughThanks again Broni for the response. I can't open files because when the icons flash off, it CLOSES the file. I was able to run my virus\spyware programs though an what they did find didn't help my problem. How is HiJack This suppose to help? And Pat thanks for your response also. Like I was telling Broni, it's difficult to open files before my icons flash.Did you try Safe Mode?
As for HJT, you may have some infection. That's why, it'd be important to see HJT log.

Solve : "This operation has been cancelled..."?

Answer»

Today I tried to access my Control Panel to try and get my webcam to work.. but when I clicked it to open it a message popped up that said "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." What does that mean? This is my own computer and I'm the only use on it. This has never happened before. Anyone know how to fix it? Welcome to the CH forums.

Can you be sure your system is squeaky clean?

Please read this.

Can we get a little more info about your computer? Hardware specs? Which operating system are you using? Have you made any changes recently that may have affected the software for your camera? If you cannot "access" the Control Panel and are using Windows XP this might help:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/187222-no-control-panel.html
I have windows XP home edition. I recently downloaded a driver for my webcam, but it's just the same ONE i have on a different computer downstairs, but when I downloaded it on this computer it wouldn't work for my camera.
Would I have to clean out my system or anything? Because I'd rather not have to LOSE all my pictures and everything I have.
It was LAST cleaned out about 4 months AGO.No.
The best thing to try at this point is to un-install the camera in Device Manager...you will recieve a warning...ignore it.
Also look to see if the camera software is listed in add/remove programs...if so remove it.
Then if it is a USB connection power down the machine and DISCONNECT the camera.
Re-boot and re-install the drivers...it will tell you when to connect the camera.
After this you should be good to go...

p.s. We still don't know anything except it's a webcam...info is important.I don't know much about the camera because I got it so long ago and I lost the disk, that's why I had to download a driver. All I know is it's a logitech. It's pretty old though, about 4 years maybe.
Also, when I go to 'add/remove programs' the same warning comes up that came up when I went to the control panel :SThere should be a sticker on the bottom of the unit with a serial # or UPC code...post it here. There's no sticker on the bottom or a code anywhere on the camera.
Here's a picture of it if that helps any.

How is your security (viruses, spyware, etc.) check?I have Avast Antivirus, it was just put on my computer when I got it cleaned out. That's the only antivirus thing I can find right now but I thought I had more.Did you say it works on the other machine ? ?
If so DLoad and install DriverMax
and let it find the driver.

Follow these instructions and use the driver that DriverMax found

Kudos to Broni for DriverMaxI downloaded the drivermax but I'm not sure what to do now?
I also removed the previous driver I had installed. so guess what, i fixed it. well my friend who is pro at computers send me a program that i did something with, i'm not really sure what, but it fixed it so it's all good. but i still don't know what to do about the webcam driver not working so if anyone has any ideas that would be wonderful Good news, you fixed it, but as for your webcam, since you don't know its model, or serial number, it's hard to help.
All you can do is to follow patio's advice...

Solve : Illegible Font?

Answer»

Today my fonts have been ALTERED in certain areas.

This is one of them:

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/4836/fffbt5.png

I tried to change the fonts in control panel --> display properties --> appearances, but the drop down menu only shows one FONT, and it changes nothing.

Outlook Express and some other applications have fonts liking that too.

My language setting is Traditional Chinese, and my computer had no problem displaying them. Today, about 90% of Chinese texts are illegible (mojibake) (eg. in emails, MS Word etc)

My computer specs:
Windows XP
Pentium 4, 1GB ram.
Graphic card: Nvidia 7600 GT (about 2 months old).

I have attempted to FIX it with different methods:

1) Re-installing graphic driver
2) System Restore

But non fixed the problem.

Before this incident I have had downloaded Windows Live Mail and Live Messenger.

Windows also updated the following:
CAPICOM Security Update for CAPICOM (KB931906)

Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365)

Office 2002/XP Office XP Service Pack 3
