Solve : Proper XP Virtual Memory Settings for Two Physical Hard Drives?

Why any other drive other than the one that contains the OS would need a pagefile is BEYOND me...

Only core PARTS of the operating system kernel bypass this address translation and use real memory addresses directly.

Solve : Windows 2000 Bootup requires domain logon?

Answer»

Hello and thank you for reading my thread.

I apologize, I think I posted this in the wrong forum. I have reposted this in Windows 2000 HELP forum. Could a moderator please delete one of these posts. Thank you.

My AMD Athalon has a 250 gig seagate drive in it, and has 500 meg of ram. The O/S is Windows 2000, service pack 3. I use it at home for personal use.

I have made this computer a single drive. It had other drives in it but I have taken them out to ISOLATE the problem I have.

When I start up the computer, I am faced with a logon SCREEN, that says "Logon Message" (in a box)
"The system cannot log you on because the domain MARKS250GIG is not available."

It wont accept my passwords that I thought they should be.

I actually removed all the passwords for log-on because there were no other users about for this comnputer except myself.

Can someone please direct me as to how I might get my computer running again?

I am currently trying to set up ANOTHER drive to be the master and have the 250 gig as a slave.

Thank you ImnoGuru.

Sorry I meant to put in Windows 2000 as the operating system not pro.

Was this a used drive from another machine ? ?
If so i would wipe it clean and re-install Win2K for a fresh start...Thank you again patio for your reply.

The 250 Gig was a brand new drive with a clean install of windows on it. The idea was to back up all the data on the other two drives (20 Gig and 80 Gig) onto the the 250 Gig drive, then delete both the 80 and 20 gig drives; eg remove them from the tower.
Other things happened in life and I hadn't been able to allocate the time to getting that done. So far I still haven't got that done as I have a different issue with the other two drives. ( I think the house was hit by lightening during the recent storms we had here in Australia.)

Now another problem has presented in the 20 gig drive. When I went to start the 20 gig drive as a stand alone master drive, I got the BSOD with hal.dll needs to be reinstalled (I have another post relating to this)
So I need to reinstall that file before I can transfer the data as planned.

Solve : Can't update to SP3 etc., re-upgrade Media Player, or watch DVD's POST-REPAIR?

Answer»

About 3 weeks AGO I clicked on a link that was either hacked or was not LEGIT to begin with, and it blue-screened my computer. I had it repaired and it didn't need to be wiped. The problem is that I can no longer upgrade to Service Pack 3, re-up Media Player (black UI, etc.), or watch DVD's (Media Center seems messed up).

I wonder first, what exactly is going on? I don't understand why these things wouldn't work, unless I got worked over by the place I brought it to and they do this regularly to get an easy additional ~45 bucks out of all their customers. It seems too ARBITRARY, and with the exception of my ability to connect to the Net, the only things that are broken are about the only things that anyone -- experienced or not -- cares about.

So is there anything I can do, here, or will I need to bring it back and have them work on it?

You said you had it repaired. How? What was DONE?Quote from: Allan on November 14, 2009, 08:48:11 AM

You said you had it repaired. How? What was done?

Some system files were corrupted and needed to be repaired / replaced... basically what one would expect, though I don't know exactly what that kind of repair entails. Not a major operation, any way you slice it, and probably not a lot of manual work involved, either, which makes me wonder. The condition of the machine outside of this incident is far above average; like the guy said, he was surprised at how clean it was.

Solve : user privilege?

Answer»

good day !

I need to KNOW if there is a way to prevent a standard user of xp from deleting files in the computer!? the THING that when i save my files and folder some kids keep deleting them but i need the files to be on the desktop...can i?
does it have to do with the user privilege? You could set it up so that they have their own 'Limited Account'. That way NOTHING they change will affect you.well, there are also some files that i keep for them to use like each kid save his work in his file but they keep deleting each other files so You could set them each up with their own account. Again, I would suggest making it a 'Limited Account'. i cant just set an account for each of them...imagine a computer with almost 11 user name If you don't want to follow Quantos' advice you can use ntfs PERMISSIONS, but other than that you'll need a third party app to lock certain folders if you want to. Still, separate user accounts is probably the BEST solution.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Yeah, I saw the intial posting of your image. I'm still wondering what's the point of this?BRONI's posts are exactly what you want. you cannot do this from the registry, you need to add another item to the TOOLBAR; a static text item, to be exact. But as soybean has asked: what is the reason for placing text there?

What application are you using to open these files?

Is this the prompt EXPLORER gives you like "are you sure you want to open 1000 files"?

I believe it may be a checkbox in FOLDER options, something along the lines of "confirm when performing operations on a large number of files" or something to that effect. I don't have XP available to see, though, and vista seems to open by sending ALL the filenames to the application rather then starting a new instance for each file.

Solve : Have XP corrupt file, Comp no go??

Answer»

Thank you dahlarbear. I tried and succeeded to get a COPY of the " HAL.DLL" file on a flash DRIVE.

The computer now has a functioning HDD with WINDOWS XP on it and the 20 gig drive is seen by Windows so I backed up... (well, copied the documents folder to a DIFFERENT flash drive), found the HAL.DLL file and copied that to a flash drive also, a different flash drive by the way.

Can someone tell me, how I might "install" the HAL.DLL file to the 20gig drive PLEASE?
That is all the 20 gig drive needs to (perhaps), get it fully working.
Thank you ImnoGuru

Solve : weird, sudden issue.?

Answer»

This is more about my roommate's machine than mine.

This morning it was working fine, he tried to run a system scan with iolo System Mechanic, discovered that SM's anti-virus was DISABLED and that he had Windows update to install.

After enabling the anti-virus and installing the updates, the machine boots to a black screen, as if F8 had been pressed, but no matter what option is selected, the machine restarts itself. If u have or can barrow a Win XP cd. Try doing a check disk /p and /r from the Recovery Console. IfWrite back and let us know if it WORKED. Don't think that's an option. I think the only discs he has are the restore discs. You can download a recovery console .iso (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212) and burn it to cd then boot to the cd and get to the recovery console. The one command you want to run is chkdsk /rok, now I show my stupidity, or maybe just too many times hitting asphalt at high speeds....

how does one boot to a CD? OK, here's what I get whenever I try to restart this machine.

Windows Advance Options Menu

Please select an option

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Enable Boot Logging.
Enable VGA Mode
Last know good configuration (your most recent settings that worked.)Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Start Windows normally.
Reboot
Return to OS choices menu

use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

so far, NOTHING I have tried has allowed me to get this machine to start normally.Disable auto-restart and see what happens. If you get a "blue screen of death", that's ok, just write down all the info on the screen and post it here. Quote

It was said here 1,000,000 times, NOT to use idiotic tools like System Mechanic, but no, people will still use it and then cry about not bootable COMPUTER.

If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number 1).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem..
NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer OVERFLOW protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not CRUCIAL, however what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above.Quote from: Broni on November 14, 2009, 09:13:29 PM
It was said here 1,000,000 times, NOT to use idiotic tools like System Mechanic, but no, people will still use it and then cry about not bootable computer.

ok...pretend I didn't find this site by searching for help. I didn't use System Mechanic.

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with System Mechanic?

Now, as to what I got when I disabled auto restart:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

IO1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Chekc to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Solve : File copy fail, now files gone??

Answer»

I was going to make a backup of some files. So i accidentally dragged
the folder i wanted to backup to my FLASH drive, there wouldn't be a
problem except in the process i watched it say it was copying then it
was done, but it couldn't move the folder the files were all originally
in. It gave me an option to retry and to cancel so i try retry a few
times and didn't work so i canceled. Now the original folder is still
there with nothing in it and nothing is on the flash drive. Is there a
temp folder or something that would still have those files? Thank youFirst, your post makes no sense at all - copy or move - which? You can look in the recycle bin I guess, but without knowing exactly what you did it's impossible to say for sure.I think he is SAYING that he was trying to copy a file to a place and then the proses did not FINISH, so he cancel it and then all the data was removed in the file you was trying to copy... and now you are asking if you can get it back.

Right?I had a folder from my documents and i placed it into the director of my 2gb thumb/flash drive and it said it moved then at the end it said that it couldn't move the folder, but i just watched it move all these files to the drive that are now gone, just because the folder itself wouldn't move. Can anyone help, i tried about 10 different RECOVERY software programs. Also tryed searching with just the regular search in case it is just in a temp folder. and no luckuse the recovery program on the disk the files were being moved from. I recommend Recuva, personally.

where is the recovery console? my laptop im on now wont let me donwload it from one of the posts here where im supposed to burn it to cd.... i don't know what the heck is wrong anymore!1. You're a dangerous individual "lost"... So quick to act... Slow down...

Disconnect the new hard drive from the computer (and leave it off for now).

2. Last known good configuration. If you've been unable to successfully log in since the addition of the new drive; try to boot using the "Last known good configuration" option of the Windows Advanced Options menu, which you may access using the F8 function key during system startup.

3. Were you able to successfully login and use the new hard drive before your troubles began? How many hours or days before the trouble began?hey bear,

when i click on last known.... it goes right back to the restart thingy....ooooof

the hardrive was working fine right after i installed it, i was able to save my movies, but i think the next day is when the mess started. it has been disconnected ever since

now i'm lost AND stuck!!!http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3301821. Did the trouble begin with the "first" reboot after installing the new hard drive?

2. Disable restarts. To stop continuous restarts, you should select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" from the Windows Advanced Options menu. Generally it should stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

3. Backup Data. If you don't care about the data, that makes it easier. Simplest thing then would be to run a "chkdsk /p /r" on file system of your system drive from Recovery Console. If that doesn't work, either attempt a repair installation or a new installation of the OPERATING system.

If you care about the data, you should back it up before proceeding. Normally this would be done by slaving the hard drive to a known working computer system. If your working computer is a laptop, I'd assume you'd need to use a USB interface to access the slaved drive. You'd either need an external drive enclosure with the correct internal interface (IDE PATA or SATA) or a cable with the correct adaptor to convert your drive interface to USB.

Or you could boot the desktop to a Live CD, and attempt to save your data off to CDs/DVDs or USB drives (thumb, flash, hard drive). A Live CD contains a bootable program or operating system that loads from the CD instead of the hard drive. Although this is very doable, I really can't walk you through it.

Or you could place another hard drive in desktop as your master drive and install a new operating system to it. Then if the desktop appears functional, slave the original hard drive to it, to save the data and/or repair the original operating system.

A risker approach would be to install new operating system to a different partition of the original hard drive (if your Windows XP CD permits this). You could also attempt new installation to different "Windows" directory on same partition as original installation, but it's messy and I don't recommend it. It's worth repeating. If you need to save the data, use a working computer to recover it.

4. Which computer? What is the Make and Model Name/NUMBER of the Acer eMachine? Try to get it from the sticker or plate on back of the machine along with the Product Number. I'm assuming your system came preinstalled with the operating system. I'd like to see what recovery media (recovery partition/CDs) and instructions eMachine provides.

5. Restore Points. Did you make or have any recent system restore points?

6. To boot from CD, you either need to tell the eMachine explicitly to boot from CD/DVD drive or go into CMOS setup to ensure CD/DVD drive comes before the hard drive in the BIOS boot order. The documentation for your computer should explain how to do this (and should be available for download on the manufacturer website support pages).

7. Recovery Console. If your Windows XP CD supports Recovery Console, it should appear as an option on the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Screen should appear as follows:

Quote

Windows XP Home Edition Setup

Welcome to Setup.

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft(R)
Windows(R) XP to run on your computer.

o To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

o To repair a Windows XP installation using
Recovery Console, press R.

o To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

If it doesn't support Recovery Console, there's an iso image you may download and "write" (not "copy") to a CD-R.

Solve : Change back my settings?

Answer»

i was runing win 95 virtual machine an i closed my eeepc. when i opened it the resoluton and KEYBOARD are imiating 95's setting. i just want my keyboard to work beca4se osk is a pain.1. Okay, I'll admit it... I don't really know what this means: "the resoluton and keyboard are imiating 95's setting". Apparently that's a bad thing...

2. Resolution. Are we talking pixels, color depth, monitor refresh rate? What are they currently set to?
a. Pixels: 640 X 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024?
b. Colors: 16 colors, 256 colors, 16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit
c. Refresh: 60 HZ, 70Hz?

3. Keyboard. What are Windows 95 keyboard settings and why does that require you to use the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK)?

4. Recovery. Can you:
a. Restart Windows 95 virtual machine and see if there's an option to use same settings for both host and VM machine (wondering why you're currently stuck with Windows 95 settings on host machine). Perhaps restart virtual machine and terminate it normally to see what happens.
b. Use Control Panel to access Display Properties and Keyboard Properties to just reset them.
c. Revert back to an earlier system "Restore Point", a time when they were working well. Do you have any recent restore points available?95 didnt supprt this keyboard. i dont know how to choose this keyboard from a list. this is how it types the alphabet:

abcdefgh51230n6*qrst4vwxyz

the layout is bad and i dont know how to select another. i uninstalled it and rebooted and NOTHING. terminating 95 didnt either...you enabled numlock. Look carefully at the right side alphabetic keys, and you'll see they also have the numpad numbers printed on them.

Methods of switching to and from differ: but they are almost always the Fn key and another key.oh haha. that worked. I didnt enable it though, it did itself must be. it was using the same layout i selected for 95setup so thats why i thought that. and also my resolution was different but that was an easy fix. thanx heh yeah, what Imeant was, somehow numlock got enabled Nice catch "BC_Programmer"! And thank you "gamerx365" for posting the keyboard output. Not everyone would have done that.

Solve : Need help desperately, Windows XP will not reboot after attempted system restore?

Answer»

I hope someone can help me with the issue I'm experiencing with my Dell Dimension E510 desktop.

Unfortunately, I decided to update some software on my computer and it didn't go well. Software didn't work properly after update. So I thought, no problem, I'll just restore my system and everything should go back to normaI.

I then performed a system restore using Dell PC Tuneup software.

Dell PC Tuneup exited the main Windows screen and entered a blue maintenance window for Windows XP (LOOKS like a light blue screen with dark blue header and footer, white Windows XP logo in the right top corner)

Screen reads:

"Dell PC Tuneup Registry Maintenance

Dell PC Tuneup Registry Compactor initializing...

Registry Compression complete

The system will reboot to reflect changes"

At this point, NOTHING happens... system will not reboot, just continues to display that same message. I tried turning computer off, but screen just comes back when Windows loads up again. I've tried accessing the system in Safe Mode, still this blue screen message just won't go away.

I appreciate any help or suggestions on how to get this issue RESOLVED. I'm dreading the thought of not GETTING access to all my files on this PC. Thanks.
Try this>>>

RESTART your computer.
3.Step 2
Once you see it restarting hit the F8 key.

4.Step 3
Windows diagnostic screen pops up

5.Step 4
Use the arrow keys on the keyboard

6.Step 5
Select “LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION”

7.Step 6
Select the current Operating System
*Hit enter

Attempted, but no success.

Once windows starts loading, that same blue screen displays and does nothing.

Borrow an XP CD of the same version you have and do a repair install.

Solve : restore help?

Answer»

I have a vostro 1000 laptop computer. How do I restore it without the disk? It has Windows XP installed.I think you mean reinstall the OS, not restore.
If it is a OEM machine the System Recovery is built in,
but it is not OEM then you will need a diskFirst, backup any "data" you need to save.

Go to the Dell website for that make and model laptop and get the documentation. TRY http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1000/en/index.htm

Get the "owner's manual". Find section "Troubleshooting -> Restoring Your Microsoft Windows XP OPERATING System". There are three recovery options listed:
o Windows System Restore
o Dell PC Restore
o Using the Operating System MEDIA (discs)

The correct system startup procedures to invoke "Dell PC Restore" are listed in the document. I'd tell you what it SAYS, but you really should read and understand what the consequences could be.If this is related to the problem in the other thread, follow the instructions there.

Okay. That's something at least. Still wonder why it stopped SCANNING my external drive at 50%. There is nothing wrong with that drive.
BECAUSE YOU DISABLED IT IN BIOS. THE SYSTEM DIDN'T SEE ITBut it will still scan up to 50% when it can't see it? It's not scanning, it's looking for files in the MFT during the first phase of checkdisk. It counts up as though it's checking, but the actual check begins sometime after it appears the process has begun. I'm not 100% certain of what it does from 0-50, but I'm guessing it's looking for the MFT and when it can't find it, everything stops. Please follow the last instructions i GAVE you or we'll get nowhere fast...
The only drive you can boot to is the one with the OS...

This is not that difficult if you take it STEP by step...otherwise you risk losing all your data or worse.

NOTE: all drive manuf. have different pin settings...the illustration is to serve as an EXAMPLE only...

type old.txt | find /v "www.cat.com" > new.txt

only lines from old.txt which do not contain www.cat.com will end up in new.txt

From the COMMAND line you can use find.exe. The /v switch excludes lines which contain the search string. You can use the > filename syntax to redirect the output to a file.

490 of these urls will redirect me to a page displaying a picture of a cat

10 of these urls will redirect me to 10 different pages displaying different 10 different images

How do find the 10 "different" links without clicking on each of the 500 links to see where it takes me?You really can't do this. You have to preview the page to know what you want to keep.

And even if the URL works for you today there is nothing stopping the web site to change the URL to show up as one of the other 500 you already have....

Is this one of those SITES that have a picture of the day thing going on?

Solve : Post SP3 Updates?

I'm preparing to slipstream SP3 with my XP Pro installation DISK. Does anyone know of a list of post SP3 updates that can be downloaded and added into the slipstream.
I will be USING the latest version of NLite.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspxFinding and downloading all the post-SP3 updates looks LIKE a very tedious process. I think I'd be inclined to just go with SP3 as it was, and then go online and get the updates. HOWEVER, I understand what you're trying to achieve and agree with your reason for wanting to do it.

Solve : CD/DVD Drives Disappear from My Computer in Windows XP?

Answer»

I built a computer for a FRIEND of mine about a year ago. Just recently, the two DVD/CD drives stopped working. They do not appear under My Computer, but if I look in CMOS, they show up as Master and Slave on the Primary IDE.

When I look in Device Manager (Windows XP Home SP3), the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels each has two entries, and all four entries have a yellow circle with an exclamation mark in it. I deleted those four entries, rebooted the computer, and they reinstalled, but still no good - the yellow circles reappeared. I have tried running in Safe Mode, and still cannot access the drives. I also reinstalled the chipset drivers on the Asus motherboard.

It appears that maybe something is corrupted in Windows, but I’m not sure how to fix it. I put in the original Windows CD and went to the Repair option, and at that POINT, using the Command Prompt, I can see both drives are there.

Any idea what is going on and how I can get this working again. Right click on any Channel, click "Properties", then "Advanced settings" tab. Does it show PIO mode?My Primary IDE Channel (I have nothing connected to the Secondary Channel but it has the same symptoms), Devices 0 and 1 both show a Device Type of Auto Detect, Transfer Mode of DMA if Available, and CURRENT Transfer Mode as Not Applicable.

Not sure what PIO Mode is all about, but I tried that setting and shut off Auto Detect. After booting BACK up, everything had changed back to what I listed above. In Device Manager right clik the CDRom drive and select uninstall/remove...
You will recieve a warning...ignore it and re-boot.

ProfundSo, are the attachments MS Office type (Word, Excel, etc.) files? It was working fine until the battery DIED yesterday, and ive had it plugged in ever since.

Forgot to add... Its a viewsonic..I'd need more information to be sure, but it sounds like the inverter might have gone on the LCD screen.

Solve : 2 HDD, primary and slave, want to setup slave to backup data?

Answer»

I have 2 HDD on my xp computer. I pulled it out of another computer. I see it when on my computer as D.

Problem is, it only shows 5 gig total space, which it isn't. I want to set it up so that I can use it to copy the files and programs I need to save, then resotre my C drive to factory specs and hopefully speed up my computer.

I have McAfee Security Center, and I am not seeing any virus, spyware etc that would normally slow computer, so I am thinking restore to factory specs will do the trick.

How to I make format D drive, and then make it available to save my files etc. so that after I restore C drive to factory specs, I can copy them back to the main drive? Or just backup what I want from C to D and then restore?

Thanksright-click My Computer, SELECT Manage
Computer Management---Disk Management
You probably need to delete partitions, then create one large one, then format.
Don't do anthing with the C-Drive (probably Disk 0).Ok, I did the last. But after reformat it still only shows 4.15gb of space total. i know that this hard drive was over 100 gb, what happened? How do I get it to be recognized and resized? Something is wrong.

Thanks
TinaI vaguely remember somewhere back in my earlier days of COMPUTING, that when a slave drive is installed, that you enter parameters of it and then it shows the drive and capacity. Maybe I need to fix it as if I was just installing the slave drive. But for some reason I cant remember how to do this.

Any ideas? How many GB are shown directly under the Disk#?
The same thing happened to someone else a couple weeks ago. Windows Disk Mgmt would not show the hidden and/or the non FAT/NTFS partitions.
If no success, try this, it's free: EASEUS Partition Master Home EditionI restarted my computer after deleting the partition on drive d and reformatting it, and now computer wont boot.

I know for a fact that I did not mess with drive c at all, only thing in can think of is that my computer may have been booting from drive d.

I can get to setup (f1), but I cant get to the recover console to set it back to yesterday.

when I try to boot, i get a boot error. I have my recovery disks that i got with computer.

i need a startup disk so that i can get to the recovery console.

i tried to insert disk 1 of my original recovery console, and my computer is not starting from the cd, i also have a 3 1/2 floppy drive.

How can i by pass all this and get to the recovery console to restore to a previous date.

I am using my laptop to DISCUSS this topic, cant get desktop to boot1. That's a lot of damage for just seven hours... Take a breath... Take several... And then provide whatever you can for the following points (don't stress over it - just provide what you can).

2. Backup. Is there "data" on either hard drive that you "need" to save before proceeding. Do not "write" to either hard drive until you get the data off.

3. Which computer:
a. If brand name, make and model name/number of computer (information from service tag is good: model, product number, service tag identification).
b. If custom build, make and model number of motherboard.

4. Hard Drive(s).
a. The one you hope the operating system is on (Lazarus II):
(1) Manufacturer and model number of drive
(2) Interface, if known (IDE PATA or SATA)
(3) Total drive capacity (GB), if known or available off drive label.
(4) Which operating system and service pack level, e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP3?

b. Drive you wish to use for data backup:
(1) Manufacturer and model number of drive
(2) Interface, if known (IDE PATA or SATA)
(3) Total drive capacity (GB), if known or available off drive label.
(4) What system did it come out of (Windows, Linux, Mac)?
(5) Was there an operating system on it? If so, which version and service pack level?

5. Resource(s):
a. What recovery disks? What do the external labels say?
b. Recovery/Restore partition on hard drive?
c. Windows XP INSTALL CD (OEM or Retail)?
d. Available "external" hard drive enclosure of correct internal interface (IDE PATA or SATA).
e. Do you know how to "write" a bootable "iso" image to CD-R? yes there is data that i need and has NOT been backd up, pics, files, programs.

The computer is a compaq presario, and i have 6 cd's that came with it, they say

compaq system recovery, windows xp home edition.

when i boot computer, i can get to system setup

the computer has a cd, 3 1/2 floppy and 2 hdd, primary and secondary

when i try to change the setup to boot from cd, it still tries to boot from floppy.

i know that my data is there and i would be able to fix this if i could just get past the error

"master boot record error"

it seems that the computer will only boot from the floppy, so what i need it to get it to boot from the cd.

call me if you can help

Phone # Removed.
1. Operating System. You're going to need a working operating system to "backup" and/or recover data files. You might:
a. Boot to a Live CD (e.g. Ubuntu 9.10).
b. Restore the previous operating system (to "new" or different hard drive).
c. Use another computer (with working operating system) to access data.

2. Backup/Recovery. You should not "write" to any partition (or in this case, hard drive) that you wish to "recover" data from. It might "overwrite" the needed data, thus corrupting it even more.

3. Second Hard Drive. The one you were going to use for "backup".
a. Is there any "data" on this drive you need to backup or save?
b. Is there a working operating system on this drive? Which one?
c. If you return drive to original computer, will you have a working computer to troubleshoot from?
d. Manufacturer, model number, and capacity of drive
e. Drive interface (IDE PATA or SATA)?
f. Can we install/restore an operating system to this drive?

4. Compaq Computer. What is the model name/number? Or better yet, give us the information from the service tag on the back of the computer case:
a. Model name/number
b. Product number
c. Service Tag ID
d. Serial Number

5. Resources:
a. Do you have access to CD drive to "write" (burn) CDs?
b. Do you know how to "write" a bootable "iso" image to CD-R?

Most of the Times the Bips are " Error Messages" from PC .
On Manual there are no info.
Most of Times the bips are direct "connect" to Mother Board Issues .

Hope that Helps
Download and run a memory diagnostic utility. Could very well be FAULTY ram. As for the beep codes, go to the website of your bios manufacturer and check them out.thanks for your replies, please could you gove me a few suggestions for the various things you advised that i use

Download and run a memory diagnostic utility. Could very well be faulty ram. As for the beep codes, go to the website of your bios manufacturer and check them out.
0. Check the memory first.

1. Memory Diagnostic. To create and boot a "free" memory diagnostic from CD, follow the "excellent" instructions laid out by Broni in "Reply #1" of this thread (after the disk diagnostic paragraph.)

2. w29n51.sys file. This is Intel's wireless driver. Next time you're able to enter "Safe Mode", use Device Manager to "disable" the built-in wireless network adapter (so its driver doesn't load). Hmmm... why would it's driver be loading in Safe Mode. Are you booting to "Safe Mode with Networking"?

With the built-in wireless disabled, reboot and see if issue went away.

If it did, check to see if updated driver available for the wireless. See Intel Wireless Networking Drivers and software.

Solve : Very puzzling installation problem?

Answer»

Hi all. This is a tricky one, and I don't know why it is happening.
I'm having a problem installing a programme-download from a site. The download itself is not the problem, it's not corrupted in any way. When I try to install it, from the folder i saved it to, the installation starts, but keeps stopping on EXACTLY the same FILE all the time, and the installation will not continue....heck, it's only a bitmap-file....I don't know my computer stops every time at this particular file. I don't have any problems with installing any other downloads.
It's REALLY frustrating....anyone have an answer? What's the program, from where did you download it, and on what filename does it stop?Hi Allan. It's from ultimatebet.com the POKER site.
It stops on:

data/gameimage/mainbg/mc_icon_bounty.bmp

A friend of mine had no problems installing it, so I got him to send HIS execution file to me,I put it on my computer and I opened it. It started to install, and.....yes, you've guessed it!When it gets to that point to you have the option to "ignore" the error and continue the installation?Allan.....no error messages show....nothing....it just stays there (it flickers now and then, but that's it!)Just a WILD guess but try disabling your anti-virus program before you try installing that program. Thanks soybean, I'll give it a try,,,,,,,PS....as I write, I have it installing on the other tab. This time, when it stops, I will leave it for a full 30 minutes, to see if any error messages come up.Well, I left it for 30 mins, and no error messages showed. I also did as soybean suggested....disengaged my anti-virus and tried again....but still the same thing.
Thanks SOYBEAN and ALLAN for your time in trying to solve this, but looks like I'll have to give-up on this one, and go without the programme.Since it's from a Poker site this is a blessing in disguise...

Some have been known to carry hidden payloads.Patio...you could be right....maybe I should just get on with my photography, and give the gambling a miss.

Cheers all.Quote from: Laffinoutloud on December 08, 2009, 08:57:59 AM

Solve : Stuck on blue hp logo screen?

Answer»

I recently did a fresh install of windows xp on my hp pavillion a1000n and everything was working great but when i turn off the computer and TRY to turn it back on it gets stuck on the hp LOGO screen and i cant do anything but to manually turn it back off, problem is it keeps doing it over and over untill i disconnect the cable from the power supply then connect it back and then turn the computer on.

So i thought it was the power supply and i changed it...but sadly it keeps doing the same thing.

Any suggestions??
i would really apreciate any opinions.
thank you.Well, it certainly sounds like a hardware problem. I'd run a diagnostic on the ram, video card, hd, etc. You can start by booting to the Recovery Console and running chkdsk /r. Then you can download memtest (or something similar) for the ram.Thanx a lot for your help...however i already removed the pci cards tested the ram even changed the ram, changed hard drive ran chkdsk /r...and for some reason it still gets stuck on the hp screen.
im thinking, since i already checked everything else that is either the mobo or the processor...but i was wondering if theres any way to check these two so that i KNOW which ONE to change.

any help is much apreciated.http://www.ehow.com/how_4867905_test-processor.htmlQuote from: marvin_313 on November 16, 2009, 10:51:54 PM

Solve : Root directory does not see the USB drive ( E: )?

Answer»

My root directory does not see the USB drive ( E: )

Yet if I do the following >

My Computer>Right click>Manage>left click on Disk Management.I can see TWO drives ( C: ) and my ( E: ) drive. (in the boxes)

If I go to the box with my ( E: ) drive and right click in there,I can see the contents of this stick.
Before you ask yes this stick works perfectly on my laptops.

Now it gets even better,I opened Windows Explorer, adjust the area so I could see what was going on,( so I now have three boxes open )

1, Windows Explorer
2, Computer Management
3, ( E: ) drive,showing the document.

I formatted ( E: ) drive and yes you guessed it ( E: ) drive.popped up in Windows Explorer.

I closed Windows Explorer with ( E: ) drive. showing then did nothing else and re-opened it,yes you guessed it. The ( E: ) drive.had disappeared.

I have even gone back with restore and it is still the same.

I have been on the net looking for answers but nothing.

I currently belong to EIGHT other Forums and nobody seems to be able to come up with a solution

I am running XP home edition with service pack 2 and all the updates.

I have been into “disk management and reassigned the letter.

All I want to do is go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer and see the letter that RELATES to my USB stick, eg. E:
It is just until recently this problem arose, prior to this I could in both areas.

I am the only person on this machine and I do not play games.

I have even eliminated the USB hub and plugged my stick / sticks directly into my USB port/ports on the tower.
I KNOW the hub works because I have my sound system running through it and my printer.

I just don't get it...
It shows up in Disk Management but not Explorer ? ?
What am i MISSING here ? ?Try this:
In disk management, right click the drive in question, and select change drive letters (or something to that extent). Remove the current drive letter (E:\) then change it to F:\ then see if that works. Keep changing the letters until it works. If you've gone through them all, post here with the bad news. If it works, post here saying it did. Quote from: Helpmeh on December 04, 2009, 05:37:56 PM

I can go into "disk management" and see the contents of the stick(and read them),I can even add and remove items from the stick.

So you tell me ! ! ! I was severely puzzled about what a "route directory" was, but then I realised... it's a root directory. Root of the directory tree...

To the OP... have you tried installing the Microsoft TweakUI Powertoy and then use the show/hide drive letters feature to see if the letter is checked or unchecked?

I have done that but nothing has come up,or do I have to do something

Did you:

1. Start TweakUI
2. In the left hand pane, click the + to the left of "My Computer"
3. A tree list will appear.
4. Click "Drives"
5. In the right hand pane, using the scroll bar, make sure that all the letters A to Z are checked.
6. Click the OK button at the bottom

Solve : Computer is still slow in spite of doing everything possible!! :-(?

Answer»

No need to remove CCleaner. It's a multi-purpose maintenance tool. Even if you don't use it's registry cleaner, its other features make it quite worth keeping. And, while I agree with the general VIEW of other forum members about AVOIDING registry cleaners, CCleaner's registry cleaning tool is safe. I've used it scores of times over a PERIOD of several YEARS and never had any problem whatsoever with it, and so have thousands of other users. I do heed CCleaner's prompting to backup the registry before telling CCleaner to go ahead and remove the ITEMS it found; this is just good practice any time you're dealing with the registry.

To set security zones

In Outlook Express, security zones enable you to choose whether or not active content, such as ActiveX Controls and scripts, can be run from inside HTML e-mail messages. You can choose a moderate security level that ALLOWS most active content to run, or you can choose a more restrictive security level.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab.
In the Security Zones section, choose an Internet Explorer security zone:
Choose Internet zone for standard use. It is used by a majority of Outlook Express users.
Choose Restricted sites zone to create a more secure environment.
Note

You can adjust the security level of these and other zones in Internet Explorer. The security settings that you make in Internet Explorer also apply to Outlook Express. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then adjust your settings on the Security tab.

Solve : Installed Windows on my new hard drive, now my others wont work? (new update)?

Answer»

Here is the story,

My 80gig finally died that had windows on it, so i got a new 160gig sata and swapped them out.

I left my 1.5TB and 640g drives connected the whole time.

When I booted up for the first time with no OS isntalled on the new drive, it wanted me to format it, so i did, and then it also had me format LIKE 131gigs on the other 2, i think??

So now, when i go to my computer and click on the big drives, they dont open, they say they need to be formatted, but this is SOMETHING I do not WANT to do!! its where all my stuff is!!!

Is there anything I can do to get my stuff back? see attached image.. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Okay, I give up. How did you boot to a drive with no OS on it?I mean I put in the hard drive, put the XP disc in the CD rom and hit the "on" button on the tower. sorry heheThen what? Did you boot to the CD? Did you then install the OS on the new drive? And what do you mean it had you format the other drives? I installed XP on the new drive, but for some REASON before the installation ever occured it just wanted me to format a partition on the other drives, I thought perhaps it switched the drive letters around on me because it said something like

format 131gb on drive F
format 131gb on drive D
format 131gb and drive C

and I stupidly let it make the new partitions on the storage drives.

can you see the picture i attached?

im just wondering if I can make the other partion the active one i guess?? is that possible??now i realize that i formatted a partition on one of my OLD hard drives AND the new one, and installed windows on the OLD hard drive!!!!

so i unplugged the 2 old HDs and am currently installing windows on the NEW Hard drive, with hopes to rescue the data from the OLD hard drives when i plug them in..

any idea how i would be able to rescue the data?:Not if the drives partitions were wiped and formatted...
There are data recovery Apps out ther but i'd say it's about 50/ 50 right now.Quote from: snarcher on December 03, 2009, 10:47:43 AM

...any idea how i would be able to rescue the data?:
You'll find out when you plug them back in. Like Patio says, about 50/50 chance.ok so I used recuva and got just about all my stuff back even AFTER i formatted my back up hard drives! crazy program! WOOHOO!!!

so what I did was:

install new hard drive

create a new partition on my back up hard drives

install windows on one of the back ups INSTEAD of my new hard drive

so to fix, I unplugged the back up hard drives, re-formatted my new hard drive, installed windows on it, then I plugged my back up hard drives back in and formatted them after I ran recuva on them.

workin great now, thanks bye!
