Solve : Comcast internet setup?

Answer»

So i just installed windows Xp on my friends computer. Now for some reason i cant get his internet to WORK. He has comcast internet. I tried resetting the modem and router and even then it doesnt even show that the computer is connected to a router under the network connections thing. when i try typing in 192.168.1.1 in IE it doesnt come up with a menu or anything....but it was working just fine before the Xp INSTALLATION. So...what did i break LOL? Any other info you need to know to help me just let me know.

PS. i know the router is Linksys Can you connect to the router via a Ethernet cable? Your trying to connect right now over WiFi right? From your friend's computer, bring up a command prompt window, enter the FOLLOWING commands, and "post" the output to this thread:
o ipconfig /all
o route print

To get a command window:
o Start
o Run
o type "cmd" without quotes, select OK

The following syntax will redirect command output to a text file (if that helps):
o ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt
o route print > c:\route.txtQuote

To get a command window:
o Start
o Run
o type "cmd" without quotes, select OK

Something ELSE you can do to make it quicker to get to a command prompt in the future is start, accessories, right click on command prompt and click on pin to start menu.

Then command prompt is always on your start menu. Very handy. You probably need the ethernet driver. Click Start then Run and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter. This will take you to device manager. Do you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points there?

Solve : Memory supporting problem?

Answer»

Hi everyone
I just boughout a new system

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache)
RAM: 4 * 2GB = 8GB

The problem is Windows XP doesn't support memory UPPER than 4GB.
I understood that in some windows 64 bit mode it works, but I want to work on Windows XP.

Is there anyway to make Windows XP support 8GB memory ?http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspxThe QUICK answer is no.

If you want to run more then 4 gigs of ram you need to go 64 bit.

There is a 64BIT ver. of XP.Thats true patio. I forgot to add that.

Thanks!
Anytime...

Solve : "Find Target" in link properties doesn't work?

Answer»
Howdy, folks.
I right click a link (.lnk), click Properties, then click "Find Target" and instead of folder with the target opening an Open With box opens. It has several programs suggested, but not explorer.exe. I have to browse for explorer.exe.

How do I fix this problem?
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htmI downloaded and entered the info from the reg file into register. I STILL have the problem.Do I need to reinstall the OS?I don't think so, no. You can boot to the OS, insert the XP CD in the drive and RUN sfc /scannow. Let's see if that helps.

By the way, what happened just before this problem appeared? I doubt it just popped up out of blue.Use TweakUI to REBUILD your icons.

I've been working on a big research project. Have you tried doing a system restore to before the problem started?

Did you run the file checker like Allan suggested?Quote from: JJ 3000 on September 14, 2009, 06:02:00 PM

Howdy, I am here to report the problem solved. I was directed to this page.

I deleted the folder key, as stated in the second solution and merged this reg into registry.

It's from Doug Knox the folder reg.

Solve : Windows XP loads blank black screen?

Answer»

I have a Dell desktop with Windows XP. When I turn on my computer, the Windows XP loading screen appears (with the BLUE loading bar), but then the screen goes black and never loads my desktop. My recovery disk boots and gives me the "Welcome to Setup" screen. When I hit ENTER to try to repair, it brings me straight to the screen that asks to create or DELETE partitions. If I hit "R" to recover, my Administrator password is no longer set to [blank] (in the past, I've just hit ENTER). I've also tried booting in VGA mode, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with the prompting screen, Debugging Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, etc, but it always ends up at a black screen.

I've read that there are ways to load Windows by copying and deleting system files using DOS mode within the "R" recovery CONSOLE, but I can't get that far without first changing my admin password.

I realize formatting may be inevitable, but are there any tricks to either (1) change my admin password without loading Windows, or (2) repairing Windows with the recovery disk without clearing my C: partition? Do I have to delete partition C: to install a new OS on it? Or would that not allow me to access my files anyway? All I want to do is get my files off the drive before formatting, if possible. If that's all you want to do, I would recommend you get "Ghost Drive". It will save your data and allow you to reformat without losing your stuff. Although, you will need another computer just to get the software but I'm sure that task will be much easier for you. Just a thought.Wow, sounds like you have your very own Helen Keller simulator!

Sorry mate. Its a joke from another post I couldn't resist :p
www.helenkellersimulator.com

Now back to issue.

1. The password for Administrator is whatever was set as the user password when Windows was first installed/turned on. If you still cant get it there may be another way.

2. To back up your files grab the latest image of Ubuntu and burn it to a disk. Then just boot live without installing.

www.ubuntu.comOK,
(OK, I love the Helen Keller Joke!)
When your drive is having trouble like that it usually points to a BAD hard drive. The reason I say this is because Windows isn't finding the video drivers when it boots into the OS. Hard drives have like 3 years life usually, heat can play a major factor in dataloss from your HD, . . . the list goes on.

I say do a Scandisk if you can and use the -f option (Fix) and perhaps this will help.
If it were me I'd change the hard drive and reload Windows and be done with the problem.

Anyhow, good luck to all of you with PC problems. If your computer is like 4-5 years you'd be best buying a new one anyhow. PCs are quite cheap these days, Microcenter.com has some killer deals on complete refurbished system for like $299 that are quite the deal. (Oh, No I don't work for any of thse companies!)

Best Wishes to All of you and Best of Luck regardless of what ya decide; What is the Admin password ? ?
How did you manage to forget it ? ?I didn't have a password. I had several viruses and trojans that must have created one.Quote from: zink08 on October 28, 2009, 08:38:38 AM

Solve : Computer runs incredibly slow??

Answer»

About a year or 2 ago, my brother bought a rather expensive computer off of Newegg. In the interest of a shorter post, it will suffice to say the computer works. Sort-of. It was built to run CAM and CAD programs like Solidworks, Peps and recently, Visi. Which it does, only in the worst possible manner.

When running something like Solidworks, it either runs like clockwork, or a brick oven. If you get the former, everything works marvelously. Everything responds, everything works. When you get the latter, everything works, but at turtle speeds. The computer TAKES ages to do something as simple as rotating the view. Trying to draw something is painstaking. The computer locks up, freezes and crashes until eventually you get fed up to the point of restarting the computer and trying again, hoping it won't slow down again.
It's not only with the software that it runs like that either. Using IE, Chrome or Firefox, it's clear something isn't running right. Trying to scroll down the page too fast sends the computer into a LAG that can last up to 10 minutes, only to have it play catch-up and then lock-up.

Recently it's decided to get worse. Using it to view any kind of "system heavy" task, it immediately begins to seize, and will not allow for any kind of PROCESS managing. Everything runs slow, and NONE of it can be ended. It also keeps all 4 processors running at a solid 50%.

It' a powerful computer, so I don't get why its having these problems. I've looked through the computer for any processes running that might be causing the slowdown, with a little bit of luck. Removing the windowssearch process helped a little bit, but it runs worse than my 10 year old tower. Also, it's yet to show any kind of error message except for ".... has unexpectedly crashed"

From what I can gather about the computer it has the following;
Intel Core2 Quad CPu Q6600 @ 2.4ghz
3.5gb of ram
Seagate 300gb hard drive
Nvidia Quadro FX 1400
I'll keep updating this list as I find out more

In the interest of helping as much as possible, I have a highjack this file as well.

Solve : 2issues: 1.PC stuck up and hard disk not recognized, 2.limited account not worki?

Answer»
Issue 1 :

* I have bought the current hard disk one month back due to failure of the previous one. Both are of Seagate.
* My PC stuck up suddenly while working with the noise from hard disk ( clicking noise )
* When I RESTARTS the PC the PC stops booting after the BIOS screen with the error messages like "unable to load OS" or "disk not found".
* If I remove and replace the hard disk connection, it WORKS normally. But, the PC stuck up after 1 day or after few hours.
* I have performed the hard disk self tests with Seatools software from Seagate. It has passed all the steps.
* Why this is happening with a new hard disk?
* Is the issue is with the hard disk or hard disk controller?

Normally the clicking sound is the hard drive thrashing. It is also a good sign that the drive it on its way out.

Have you tried to put it into another machine to see if the clicking follows it? Maybe it is your controller.

Was downloading music and turned it off came back to it and thats when the problem STARTED. You turned it off while you were downloading something? How did you turn it off? And just out of curiosity, why would you turn it off while it was in the middle of downloading?

And do you have an XP CD?So I Think you get your system damaged. The most EASY way is to reinstall Windows. You can ignore the above post for now

In the registry, select FILE > IMPORT and select the "missing.reg" file from your desktop
You should get a confirmation that it was imported successfully.

This is an instant fix ... your speakers should now WORK for WEB sounds, no reboot required.
um..... okay.Well thats a start ! ThanksHmm..I'm not sure if that is a fix or not.I have deffinitly not seen it before.I do know that i had a Sound virus that was imported off of Police pro virus.I downloaded Advance System Care, and it Got RID of virusus i wasn't even aware of (Viruses hiding in H_KEY files)

Solve : Yahoo Messenger is half blank/ Rainlender2 Program can't open file Error 5?

Answer»

My Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP 2003

I kept RECEIVING messages:
Memory level critically low/ remove programs to free up disk space

I removed several programs to free up space

* Afterwards - everything was working fine (as of last night) and shut down my computer

* This morning - starting up my computer - YAHOO Messenger is half blank? Does not show contacts

* My Rainlender2 CALENDAR will not open/ with messages/ X unable to create configuration file: C:\ Documents and Settings/ as well as X can't open file Error 5 Access denied

* Everything else seems to be working fine

* I tried Systems Restore/ but get the message: System Restor is suspended because there is not enough disk space on the system drive. There needs to be 200MBS of Free Space available

* I only have 75MB space available

* TRYING to defrag - I get the same message - not enough space to defrag
How big is your hard drive?Hmmm...Do you have Ccleaner on your computer?
If not i would suggest getting it.Uninstall all unnecessary programs. Also run the defragment under the Ccleaner.Make sure your registry keys are ok also.
You can get Ccleaner from download.com Free to download and free of viruses.Quote

* I only have 75MB space available

This is the root of your issue...
You need to free up some space on that drive...
You should have 15% of the total CAPACITY as free space.Thank you everyone - it is appreciated. I had a professional come in and clean everything up - free up a ton of space. I downloaded CCleaner too!

All is well now!

Solve : XP sp3 runs slow,,?

Answer»

The Windows registry is a database repository of information about a computer's configuration. Installing and uninstalling software will make your registry a mess, leading to decreased PC performance and causing computer crashes.

The registry size keeps GROWING when you use Windows. When the registry becomes very large, your computer's performance will be DECAYED and unstable. Some computer users even spend a lot of time trying to go through the registry and edit it manually. Not only can this be a daunting TASK, it is also a risky one.
[link Removed]

[Moderated Message: As the Windows registry grows over the Operating System's lifetime, the performance impact is negligible.]I have used 'cleaners' and...
have not been overjoyed with them.
Yeah, they work. But little change in performance, IME. Just ignore that guy - he's GOING around posting nonsense.Quote from: EEVIAC on October 28, 2009, 12:15:18 PM

I don't see any options in Startup CPL to CONTROL services.. Only "start up" items..

Is there a version that works with Vista?

I don't mean to bump threads, but I think my question was overlooked...Sorry, I never saw the question. StartupCPL works with all Windows versions, but it does not do services. To manage services you should go right to the snap-in (START-RUN - services.msc) for permanent changes. For diagnostics you can use msconfig (if you don't have it in Vista just copy it from an XP or Windows 7 system).thankssure

Solve : A problem that I don't see an answer for.?

Answer»

Hi.
I have lost my task bar and start button. I have done everything instructed by various posts and still don't have them back.
I have a Alienware 3.6 ghz, 4 MB ram, MULTI disks with loads of spaces available.
When I do the Windows key it brings me to my documents folder.
I have attached a HJ log to this email in hopes SOMEONE will be able to help without re-installing windows as I already tried that and now have 2 windows programs on my system. A mess, HUH?
Thanks, Dianne

Yeah, according to the first post I believe that's been tried.Morning EVERYONE.
Yes, I tried that. I used System Mechanic to clean my registry but once it did that I couldn't even get System Mechanic back to go back to the old registry version.
I ended up "fixing" windows (now I probably have 3 versions in there!) and I am up with my start and bar back.
I appreciate your insights and while I have your attention, I am posting another question in hardware - maybe I'll see you there?
Thanks, DianneI can't beleive no one thought of this simple one. Is it possible set to hidden? So that when mouse is not over it you don't see it?Quote from: thumbtak on October 30, 2009, 06:46:31 AM

hello!

this is my first post here.i'm a 25 years old romanian guy and i need HELP.i have a xp sp3 and since yesterday i GOT problems.when i do the shut down it blocks .appears the blue screen as USUALLY and says saving settings(as normal) but then says windows shut down(LIKE normal) and blocks.i have waited seven minutes to shut and doesn't.so now i have to use the button to shut it.and this happens also when i need to reboot! so i can't reboot.i have to use the power button to shut down and restart.sorry for my english!
also i see thatmy tune up says at system error: "programs will not close normally at shut down" and as a solution says:"Increase the maximum waiting time for the program to 15 seconds".
can you help me please?Hi Bubui no need to panic my friend.Sounds like a minor problem.
Can you start of by telling me what Antivirus program/s you have?
Do you have any programs to clean up the computer?now i don't have an antivirus installed! i have USED avira personal! i try to attach a hijack log made recently! i have installed antimalware bytes, spybot search&destroy, tuneup utilities,xp repair, error profesional.before this problems appeared i used only tune up.after the problem i have tried the others.spybot finded ten problems and fix it.but the problem persists.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Hi Bubui, does the shutdown process still hang if you end all open applications via task manager first? You shouldn't have more then one of each type of programs on there. They can "mess" each other up.
I would suggest getting Ccleaner and either SUPERantispyware or Advance System Care. You can both of those free from download.com
Also, if you get Ccleaner do a registry cleanup and if you do get Advance System Care (which i would suggest getting both) Do a memory cleanup.i have tried all of your tips-thanks for that- but the problem remains.Shutdown Issues in XP...

Solve : IE7 has encountered a problem and needs to close?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home with service pack 3--Dell 4700 desk top. I have installed, uninstalled ie7 twice and still receive the above message when I close a window. In the error report it STATES "The following FILES will be included in this error report" C:\docume1newuser\locals1\temp\c29a_appcompat.txt. Does this mean there is a problem with this file? and if so, how do I correct it?Empty the files from the temp folder and see if that helps. You can also download and install IE8 and see if that's any better.I deleted temp files and still encountered same ie7 problem except the file to be reported in error report was DIFFERENT:C:DOCUME1\newuser\local\temp\ae8f_appcompat.txt. Also, I'm unable to go to IE8 at this time. Any other suggestions?See the post in this discussion about disabling Error REPORTING: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-443986.php. I'd try that.I did have this disabled so can I assume this is a critical error? and how might I fix it?Do you have an up-to-date anti-virus program installed? Have you run a scan recently?Yes, I have anti virus and last scanned three days ago.I'm not going to have much time today to research this. If you do a Google search on appcompat.txt errors, you'll get many hits. Based on a cursory scan of Google hits, I wonder whether you're running some program in the compatibility mode of Windows XP. Is that the case?

Take the laptop to an authorised dealer, supply proof of ownership, pay the fee, get the password reset. You have been around here long enough to know the forum policy, surely?

If they're supposed to be professionals, I don't like their terminology.ALLAN, I guess what I'm asked is, what would make it die? Did I use it too much? Did it get dusty and maybe heat up? I really didnt do anything unusual expect plug in and unplug my modem. Could a modem "kill" a hard? This is all so strange. I don't want to draw out this discussion because I know you have better things to do, I'm just trying to understand what goes on in these type of things. I've had wipe outs from viruses before, but nothing like this.

Thanks so much for all your help.

In peace
Dr. DIt's not because you USED it too much . Could be anything - it's just a (sensitive) piece of machinery. And no, the modem has nothing to do with it either. There is an outside chance that when you were inside the box you discharged some static electricity, but I've never heard of that damaging a hd from the ouside of the drive.OK Allan. Thanks for all the help along the way. We'll be going for the new disk soon. And maybe when they set it up they will also check inside and clean it, etc., and then maybe we'll be able to enslave that old HD!
I have all my mail on gmail, so that's a big help. And most of my docs are also on my laptop. There are a lot of things that were wiped out, but so be it!
I will have to back up better and sooner in the future, though; I guess that's the lesson everyone learns from this kind of thing.

Thanks again for everything.

Solve : Administators account?

Hello i have two administrators accounts i didn't realize that until the other day when i went to the other Account that i don't use i went into control PANEL and realized that that account can do somethings like change my other administrators account password then i realized that that account was also an administrators account i tried to change the account under change the account type in user accounts under to limited but the limited checked box and words saying limited or grey and when i clicked on it nothing happens is there a way i can delete it it says i can when i move my mouse over the account it says Change the persons account imformations such as the account type name, password or picture or delete this account. but when i open the account all the options i get or.

Change the name

Change the password

Remove the password

Change the picture

And Change the account type but i can't change it and i don't use that account anyway so i would like to get RID of it if i can't do this under user accounts is there any other place i could try this

I don't see no delete option in there.

you can always delete the user account if you are absolutely sure that you don’t need that user account anymore. Right-click on “My Computer” and choose “Manage”.Navigate down through “Local Users and GROUPS” and then Users, and then locate the username in the list that you’d like to get rid of.Just right-click and choose Delete. Note that this step cannot be reversed, so make sure you only delete accounts you really really don’t want anymore!

Thanks

I almost had a heart attack i clicked log of to see if it was deleted, It was but when i clicked on my normal account and nothing happend, I couldn't type in a password, I went into the guest account and came back out to see if it would WORK and it did.

How come with my account i need to type in my original password to make a new ONE. But with the other account i didn't have to do that that's why i wanted to get rid of it i want other people to use my computer but the guest account is limited to somethings i don't want it to but in user accounts i don't see how i can make a power user all i seem to be able to make or administraters accounts.

Solve : Computer will only boot to windows preinstallation environment.?

Answer»

I have an Asus Eee PC running XP, and according to my college's CIT people, it has a virus. I updated my definitions, booted in safe mode, and did a full scan using Symantec Endpoint protection, on two different days. It found ABSOLUTELY nothing either time. They told me to try it again, so I started to reboot my computer in safe mode to start it again. I was pressing F8 and my cat jumped on the keyboard and pressed a bunch of other keys too, and now I can only boot my computer in windows preinstallation environment. I've tried shutting down and hitting F8 when I reboot it, but nothing happens. What can I do?What's with all these cats and kekyboards? I've been running a support forum for 8 years and never saw one of these posts until I came here, and this is the 3rd or 4th in 2 months. Does Google send "cat/keyboard" QUERIES to CH?

Sorry Earilmadith - can you define a pre-installation environment please.I'm not really sure. That's what it says it's loading on the bottom of the screen before it comes to a background I assume came preinstalled on the PC (It's Asus related graphics) but no shortcuts, menus, anything, just a cursor. Here's the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Preinstallation_EnvironmentOkay thanks Earilmadith - just WANTED to make sure you weren't using a term inappropriately (some people use terminology they've heard without actually knowing what it means).

When the system boots press F8 and try to select Last Known Good Configuration. If that doesn't work, boot to an XP cd and choose the SECOND repair option (do a repair install). XP will essentially install on top of itself - all programs and settings should remain intact. After the repair, you'll need to download all UPDATES again from Microsoft. Two problems. I've tried hitting F8-it doesn't change the way it boots at all. Also, SINCE it's a netbook, it doesn't have a CD drive, I don't have an external one, and I don't have an XP CD anyway since it came installed with it.Okay. I'd suggest hanging out until someone more knowledgeable than I with your specific hardware can respond. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Solve : Boot.ini Problem - Please help!?

Answer»

My computer automatically installed some UPDATE, and the next time I tried to turn it on, I got the hal.dll is missing or corrupt message.

I booted from WINDOWS XP cd and replaced the hal.dll file, but the problem was still there. So I assumed it must be the boot.ini. Next I tried bootcfg /rebuild. Now the hal.dll is missing or corrupt message does not appear and the computer gets to the Windows page in startup but the page freezes. When I try to startup in safe mode, I get the blue screen of death.

I have also tried chkdsk /r which claimed to correct some errors but the startup page still freezes.

Thank you for your help!
Beni hope this would help.. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htmThere are seven different versions of the Windows XP "hal.dll" file. The Windows XP Setup selects the appropriate one for your system and renames it "hal.dll" in the installed system. Which one did you copy:

Description_in_Device_Manager HAL_File_Name

ACPI Multiprocessor PC Halmacpi.dll
ACPI Uniprocessor PC Halaacpi.dll
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC Halacpi.dll
MPS Multiprocessor PC Halmps.dll
MPS Uniprocessor PC Halapic.dll
Standard PC Hal.dll
Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible Halsp.dllI really appreciate your help.

I replaced hal.dll according to these instructions in the recovery console:

http://shanegfowler.wordpress.com/2007/01/10/missing-haldll-error-corrupt-bootini-file-quick-fix/

I typed c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32>expand d:\i386\hal.dl_

This seemed to replace the file.1. Two Options. While there are others, you have two obvious options at this point:
a. Perform Repair Install of Windows (to automatically fix current installation).
b. Troubleshoot and manually fix current installation.
(1) "Post" Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) output from Safe Mode boot.
(2) Identify and use "correct" hal.dll file for current windows installation.

2. Repair Install. The Windows XP CD needs to match version of current Windows installation; i.e. Home Edition, Professional, MEDIA Center. This procedure, if done correctly should preserve your data and installed applications, but will revert your system files back to the versions of the Windows XP CD. Not a good thing if your current system is at Service Pack 3 (SP3) level and the CD is SP2 or older. You would also need to reapply all of the subsequent Windows updates (security fixes and other updates). I haven't done this much and don't recall whether you need to provide "Product Key" and/or reactivate the Windows XP installation with Microsoft. Some reference(s):
Perform a Repair Installation
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
How-to repair Windows XP, How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade

3. Use Correct HAL. The appropriate "hal.dll" file is dependent upon your motherboard, processor, and BIOS. My guess is you should be extracting a different HAL version onto your system as "hal.dll". For example, on my very old hardware, the Windows system file with external name of "hal.dll" has the internal name of "halacpi.dll". Windows XP setup automatically determined that was the correct one for my hardware configuration and renamed it "hal.dll". Perhaps if you identified your hardware, someone could point you in the right direction. Some reference(s):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283
TROUBLESHOOTING the Startup Process

4. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). If you can read the BSOD, post the "exact" Stop Code string (with its four parameters) and any error message and/or module name it might identify.

5. Recommendation. Troubleshoot and manually fix the current installation. Your previous actions, which included the "chkdsk /r", may have fixed the original underlying problem. If you can restore the original software configuration, it might work. If the data on the hard drive is important to you, you should backup it up first. Especially if you do a Repair Install, as more than one individual have taken a wrong turn during the process ending up with a "fresh" install of Windows XP and no data. Thanks so much for your advice - I will keep you POSTED.

Solve : Password bounce back?

Answer»

On my library website, where I go to order books and check to see if any of them are in, I have an account. When I log in and try to go from one screen to another, I keep having to put my password and pin in. What did I do to mess this up? I used to be able to go anywhere on this website without constantly repeatedly putting my password and pin in. I know it's not the website, because no one else is having the same problem. I think I changed something but I don't remember what. Very bad memory plus I don't understand what a lot of the settings on the computer are for.
Any setting I can adjust to correct this ? (In very SIMPLE terms)you have to enable cookies on your browser

Didn't help.Have to tried to ask for help at the library?

Which browser and what version are you using?

This is just a guess, but for Firefox 2.0.0.20, there's an option to "Remember passwords for sites". To access:

o Firefox
o Tools (pull down menu)
o Options...
o Security Icon (tab?)
o check "Remember passwords for sites"
o OK buttonI did ask at the library, but on one else has the same problem and I can go to the library and use their computer, go onto my account there with no problem.
I use Internet Explorer, but I don't know what version it is. Where do I check to find that out?
Do you think it could be those filters they've ADDED?
1. Internet Explorer.
a. Version. On the old version I'm using, I select the "Help" pull down menu and select "About Internet Explorer". Buried within the "About Internet Explorer" window is the version number. For me it's "6.0.2800.1106".

b. Cookies. Take closer look at "Privacy" and "Security" tabs of "Internet Options" window. To access:
o "Tools" pull down menu
o "Internet Options..."
o "Security" or "Privacy" tab

From Microsoft Internet Explorer Help:

c. Auto Complete Settings. See if your version of Internet Explorer has an Auto Complete Settings windows (or its equivalent). On my version access via:
o "Tools" pull down menu
o "Internet Options..."
o "Content" tab
o "Auto Complete..." button within "Personal information" subsection
o Check boxes within "Use AutoComplete for" subsection:
- Forms ?
- User names and passwords on forms ?
* Prompt me to save passwords ?
o Select "OK" button
o Select "OK" button

2. CCleaner. Are you using any disk cleanup programs such as CCleaner? They may be deleting your cookies and/or saved form information (auto complete).:)I called my server and the guy I got this time was very helpful. I had downloaded IE8 and he thought that might have something to do with my problem. He suggested I download Foxfire and see if that helped, which I did and now it works perfectly again. Solve : net config workstation timeouts?

Answer»

If I do start - run -cmd
and then TYPE in net config workstation
I get a COM send timeout value of 0250, which is a quarter of a second, I think.
I have tried entering
net config workstation /chartime:4000
which is supposed to set the value.
But my CMD tells me that the syntax is net config workstation,
and won't recognize the slash.
When I type in "cmd" in the cmd, it tells me the version is 2001.
I'm wondering if I need a newer CMD.
This cmd is the one that came with the original Windows ME operating
system in 2001 (JANUARY or February). I have loaded a Windows XP on top of it.
I need a DOS command that will do the job, or a new cmd.exe, I THINK! what say you?1. Operating System. Please identify your current operating system and service pack level; e.g. Windows XP Professional SP3. Perhaps someone with same version and level can report the "Properties" for their "cmd.exe":
a. Complete path (where located in Windows directory structure)
b. SIZE(s) in BYTES (both disk space used and actual program size)
c. Creation date time group
d. Modify date time group
e. External version number
f. Internal version number

2. Multiple Copies/Versions. Search your entire hard drive for multiple copies/versions. When you type "cmd" in "Run" text box, system looks for first EXECUTABLE it finds by that name in its search path (determined by directory order specified in PATH environment variable). It's XP, service pack 3

I did a DIR for cmd.exe and got:
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

04/13/2008 08:12 PM 389,120 cmd.exe
1 File(s) 389,120 bytes

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$

2. The command syntax for "net config workstation" does not specify any options, does not accept the help option "/?", nor did it accept "/chartime:4000" as an option. It displays the configuration but does not allow me to change it. I'm not sure changing the configuration is accepted by the command although Microsoft documentation suggests otherwise: Net config.

I'm wondering whether you can set options within the "Services" component of the Computer Management MMC. From somewhere within the bowels of Microsoft Help, this spewed out:
Quote

To configure startup parameters for a service, right-click the service, click Properties, and then type the parameters in Start parameters before you click Start. These settings are used only once and are not saved. (A backslash (\) is treated as an escape character; type two backslashes for each backslash in a parameter.)

Solve : uninstalling ie8?

Answer»

HI hope someone can help i have ie8 on windows xp pro and its runs very very slow.
I have tried uninstalling through add and remove programs it goes so FAR then asks if i want to skip files i say yes and at the end say uninstall incomplete.I cant go back far enough on system restore to take it out either.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance Barry Taylor i am using sp2http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 you'll find everything you NEED to remove IE8

Why do you want to uninstall IE8? I'm not a big IE fan but I think you have more problems than just IE. I USE Firefox most of the time, but IE8 isn't necessarily slow by itself.

Have you ran an av scan? Have you tried other browsers?hi
since installing ie8 it takes a very long time for the programs to start up maybe 5 minutes then everything is fine .I was just assuming that ie8 was the problem i have done a virus check and my system if fine.
Thanks BarryI still think you may have a malware issue....When I downloaded IE8 the first time something piggybacked on the download and I had the same slowdowns, with REPEATED .dll issues which had IE continuosly asking to close. I removed the virus, and went back to IE7., and the problems went away.....Finally, while away for a week of fishing, I returned to find IE8 had installed with an automatic update, and it's been running fine ever since......What AV scans did you RUN?.......consider running the scans in the virus and spyware forum ....... Be sure to run only one real-time antivirus progam at a time. You shouldn't skip the file systems.

Solve : DELL LATITUDE 820 - WINDOWS XP Professional - SLOW-BSOD ONCE APPEARED?

Answer»

Hello,

My LAPTOP has been running really slow. I saw once BSOD screen but didn't write down info. HOWEVER, BSOD screen appeared only once so far...Right now just slow performance.

I've done:

1. defragmentation

2. disk clean up (system tools)

3. scanned with Windows Live Care...NOTHING showed (my version expires soon as it's free)

I came across Windows Memory Test on one of the forums saying to test/ check RAM etc...

Any further suggestions...?

Thanks

You can boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r
Also, go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". If the blue screen appears again it will stay up - post the entire contents here. Otherwise don't worry about it - might not be anything to be concerned with unless it happens again soon.

BTW - I'd use a good, dedicated AV instead of Live Care. Also download MalwareBytes and scan with it once in a while. Thanks Allan.

I have some more questions:

1. I've NEVER done "Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r". Since I've run "disk clean up (system tools)" ...isn't it the same?

2. Which AV you'd suggest instead of Windows Live Care...?

2.when running Roxio app..I am having 2 error messages...

"Mediahub.exe -Application Error" "The memory couldn't be written."

"Microsoft Visual C++ -Runtime Library" "R6025 - pure virtual function call"

Any suggestions? Thanks again Allan.

Thanks Allan.

I have some more questions:

1. I've never done "Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r". Since I've run "disk clean up (system tools)" ...isn't it the same?

Absolutely not

2. Which AV you'd suggest instead of Windows Live Care...?

Literally anything is better than Live Care. If you are willing to pay, then you have a lot of good options (Kaspersky, Nod, Norton/Symantec, Avira, Avast, too many to name). If you want a free utility then Avira and Avast have good free options.

2.when running Roxio app..I am having 2 error messages...

"Mediahub.exe -Application Error" "The memory couldn't be written."

"Microsoft Visual C++ -Runtime Library" "R6025 - pure virtual function call"

Any suggestions? Thanks again Allan.

Do a Google search on both of those error messages and you'll see lots of returns.

DLoad and try CDBurnerXPro....FREE.

It's nice ENOUGH that you just may dump Roxio.

PS. Windows is abandoning Live One Care...thanks for your help Allan and patio. I will try doing those steps that you advised. Although I am a bit scared doing "Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r"...as it'll be my first time.

There's nothing to be afraid of.

Solve : BSOD at windows boot?

Answer»

Hi there.
I've got a problem with my PC and I was wondering if any one could give me their thoughts.
I was using my computer the other day when all of a sudden a 'balloon' popped up in the bottom RIGHT hand corner saying that "Windows firewall was turned off click here to fix the problem" and then the computer went to BSOD, with a STOP message with some sort of MEMORY address next to it.
I allowed it to make a full memory dump and then restarted the machine, the machine loaded exactly like normal except when it got to the windows XP load screen, after about 1-2 seconds of loading windows I got a BSOD and the computer immediatly restarted on it's own.
I allowed it to start up again and I then got the "Windows didn't shut down properly..blah...blah" I tried to select safe mode, or any other mode, but the keyboard wasn't working, I couldn't move to any of the other options...

So I restarted the machine, and tried GOING into bios... and they keyboard worked here... So I shut down my PC and switched the master HDD to slave and vise versa. I then selected to boot from this HDD in bios which seemed to work, but windows wouldn't load for what seems an unrelated reason (haven't tried booting from that HDD/operating system before).

So I decided to switch the HDDs back around and boot from the windows CD, I got the message "Press any key to start boot from CD" but when I did it immediatly went to "windows didn't shut down correctly" screen, even though I had dissabled booting from HDD and had selected 'NO' for look for other boot devices...

What is strange about all this is that the keyboard works fine in bios, it just doesn't seem to work on the select startup mode screen.

I also put in a boot cd of SpinRite which loaded fine, but got a screen saying press any key to continue or esc to exit, and guess what, the keyboard didn't work there either...

Anyone got any ideas what's going on and what I could try to fix it?
I'd be grateful for any help at all.
Thanks!
Shandy 1. Keyboard. Start with the keyboard and/or BIOS settings.
a. How does the keyboard interface to your computer (PS2, USB, Infrared, Wireless)?

b. Have you tried another keyboard? Best choice for diagnostics would be PS2 if your computer supports it.

c. If current keyboard uses USB wire interface, check your USB settings within CMOS setup of BIOS.
(1) Is there a "Legacy" or "USB keyboard" setting you can enable?
(2) What other USB settings are there? Thanks! My keyboard is wireless, and was connected via USB. I hooked it up through PS/2 and it worked great.
However when loading in safe mode it completes loading of files and then when it gets to the windows load screen the machine reboots.

I've got windows setup to work from CD though... So at least I can reinstall windows.
Thanks for you help 1. There's several things you can try before reinstalling Windows:
a. Disable automatic restart upon system error, then "post" BSOD message
b. Boot using last known good configuration
c. Boot into Recovery Console from CD and run "chkdsk /p /r"

2. Last known good configuration. Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

When the Windows Advanced Options menu comes up, use the up/down arrow keys to select "Last known good configuration".

3. Disable Automatic Restart. From the Windows Advanced Options menu, select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter. Hopefully the machine will stop on BSOD.

Record and post back with the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending software module it might name. A google search on these text strings or substrings sometimes provides problem resolution.

4. Chkdsk from Recovery Console. This will verify the integrity of the file system and fix it if possible (option /p). It can also be used to check the disk surface for bad sectors and move or recover data if possible (option /r).
a. Boot to the Windows XP Install CD.
b. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.
c. Select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. Type it's number (e.g. 1) and hit Enter key.
d. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do this. Note: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.
e. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type "chkdsk /p /r", and then press ENTER. Chkdsk was not designed to be interrupted, so let it run to completion to avoid damage to the file system. It could take a long time.
f. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.Quote from: Helper4789 on November 01, 2009, 10:45:10 AM

Should be the same advice as him ^
Thanks, for taking the time.
I had tried backing up my system config files (system32\config) [system, security, sem, default, software] and replacing them with the repair ones in windows\repair. It booted fine with those ofcourse.
I then found my oldest backup (restore point) of those files and tried with those but got the good old BSO of Diabolical Death and Doom again... So no luck there. My oldest restore point I could find was from the 29th of October... not very old.

I was going to do a check disk, but didn't know about /p switch thanks for that
I will give that a go when I get the time and let you know the results.
can disk checks cause damage? should I run SpinRite before hand for the fun of it, although I don't know what good it will do, haven't even looked up what it specifically does, my old man just has a copy he got given from his last company.

I had been LOOKING for that disable automatic restart on system failure, I knew it existed.. just didn't know how to change it, thanks for that also

Solve : Chkdsk.. HOW. Where??

Answer»

My computer is old and I'm planning on getting a new one.. now like in weeks! However, my present one is five years old (and I found it was built seven years ago and has a whopping 448 MB of RAM (I'm amazed it runs on that!) and and AMD Athelon Processor and of course XP.

I have been having serious problems with it in the last few weeks and last night after it wouldn't restart, I had to hit the button to turn it off Well, it restared fine and all, but now I have a message on the bottom that Pando MEDIA Booster: pmb.ews - Corrupt File and then it says The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\PMP Files\pando.save is corrupt and unreadable. Pleasee run the Chkdsk Utility.

Well, after looking all over my computer FOR such a program, I finally realized I had to put that in the RUN section, but I'm not sure EXACTLY how. I tried, CHKDSK C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\PMP Files\pando.save /f but that didn't work. The DOS window OPENED and then immediately closed. Am I doing this right? Why is the window closing?

Any help is so appreciated. I hope the computer can last until I get a new one is a few weeks!Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /rThank you so much! I hope that helps things. Right now I can't even operate my disc drives since I'm trying to do backps.I don't know that running checkdisk will solve your problems, but it's certainly a necessary start. Again, be sure to run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console, not from within Windows. Please post back when finished and let us know what's going on.1. Windows XP CD.
a. Do you have a Windows XP CD?
b. Is it Microsoft "Retail" Install, OEM Install, or OEM Recovery/Restore CD?

2. Recovery Console.
a. Do you know what the Windows XP Recovery Console is? It is accessed by booting to a Windows XP Install CD: see The Recovery Console in Windows XP.

It most likely cannot be accessed from an OEM Recovery/Restore CD. Be CAREFUL with this type of CD. Many are designed to restore your system to the state it was in when it left the store (wiping out all data and/or programs acquired since then).

3. Chkdsk. It is possible to access chkdsk from the installed operating system on the hard drive (assuming the system runs well enough to permit you). Booting Recovery Console off the CD to use "chkdsk" may be the most reliable, but if that is an issue "post" back for instructions.Quote from: dahlarbear on November 01, 2009, 10:43:47 PM

There is absolutely no reason for there to be any issue running checkdisk from the Recovery Console.

Solve : Returning laptop to "out of the box" status?

Answer»

How do I return my "Mpc Transport T2300" back to its original configuration and retain Windows XP Pros' status as the OS? What can I do to "clear all ghost information" and not have to PURCHASE a CD for a new install.... I purchased this laptop used and without an install cd from a computer repair store and they are no longer in business. IS THERE A PARTITION ON THE HDD THAT HARBOURS A REPLACEMENT/ RESTORE OF THE OS?.........if so, how or what do I do to access that partition? Thanks, Lee1. Bad News. Apparently the manufacturer, MPC Computers, also went out of business. See this MPC Transport Notebook forum thread.

2. Restore Partition. I've seen no reference to a "restore" partition on this laptop, but you could try using F11 when you are rebooting and see if any system recovery/restore options are available. It appears that you reinstall the operating system from separate Windows XP PROFESSIONAL Recovery and Driver CDs.

3. Good News. Apparently a group of people gathered together and got permission to rehost the MPC support site. See MPC Technical Support.

4. MPC Transport 2300. Here are some specifc links:
TransPort T2300

5. Best Help. Suggest you visit the MPC Tech Support Forums and "post" to the MPC Transport Notebooks category. I'm assuming they would know the most about your notebook and any available resources that are still available.Thank You so much! I am at my wits end with this! I will try f11 and see! I tried f2....bios, and f12...to no avail?!?! Thanks so much for your reply and your help! It's been a good experience to use that web site for the post I needed answered! Lee JThank me after it's all said and done. You have a lot of research and work ahead of you because your computer is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

I think you will need to reinstall from CDs. You'll have to reinstall both the operating system and drivers. You may be able to download drivers from third party MPC Tech Support site mentioned in previous post.

You'll need to either "find" your Windows XP Pro "Product Key" or recover it from the hard drive. The NirSoft utility ProduKey may be used to recover the product key from an operational or nonoperational system as long as the file system is readable.

You'll also need to know whether the product key is for an "OEM" or "Retail" installation. This is INDICATED in the "Product ID" which Nirsoft utility will also report. Not sure if keys are different for retail "Full" or "Upgrade" CDs.

You haven't said whether the current operating system installation is operational or why you want to revert back to its original configuration.

If it's operational, you should backup all drivers currently in the system to avoid having to find them later. Not too familiar with that step as I've never done it, but there are "free" programs for this that someone could recommend.

If it's operational, there's also a STANDARD Microsoft utility, System File Checker (sfc), on your system to check for and replace missing or corrupt system files. Normally you would need your Windows XP Install CD to support this, but if operating system was pre-installed by manufacturer it may be setup to avoid this. If necessary, it may be possible to modify Windows registry to look for the original installation and service pack update files on the hard drive, thus avoiding need for CD. No guarantee on that, however.

Thank me after it's all said and done. You have a lot of research and work ahead of you because your computer is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

I apologize for the lack of pertinent infrmation! The system is very opperable and works great! I need to prep the comp for re-sale on craigs list. hence the reason for wiping the drive or re-install of OS I just don't have the CD for that.

I think you will need to reinstall from CDs. You'll have to reinstall both the operating system and drivers. You may be able to download drivers from third party MPC Tech Support site mentioned in previous post.
That should be my first step then to get the drivers backed up.
You'll need to either "find" your Windows XP Pro "Product Key" or recover it from the hard drive. The NirSoft utility ProduKey may be used to recover the product key from an operational or nonoperational system as long as the file system is readable.

This is where I'll be a bit lost in this process, I have a little experience with computers but this level of tech'in is grey to me.

You'll also need to know whether the product key is for an "OEM" or "Retail" installation. This is indicated in the "Product ID" which Nirsoft utility will also report. Not sure if keys are different for retail "Full" or "Upgrade" CDs.

The system may be an upgrade and installed by the store/ retailers business, it's also a Computer repair shop. They dealt with alot of "after market" systems, purchased in bulk and restored to sell again. The initial "Windows XP Pro " sticker is still on the bottom of the Laptop and not damaged. Would that be of interest for the next step...like pertinant numbers or ?

You haven't said whether the current operating system installation is operational or why you want to revert back to its original configuration.

Above I explain....[b/]

If it's operational, you should backup all drivers currently in the system to avoid having to find them later.

Could I do that by copying them to a cd from the system directly? and use the cd for the back up? Copy like all of the "windows' system/ system32 files or is it more sophisticated than I am thinking...( not a shock there if it is!!) [b/]

Not too familiar with that step as I've never done it, but there are "free" programs for this that someone could recommend.
If it's operational, there's also a standard Microsoft utility, System File Checker (sfc), on your system to check for and replace missing or corrupt system files.

Where would I find that ? Could I do a typical "search" within explorer and find it or is it something to do with "dos" and out of my league?[b/]

Normally you would need your Windows XP Install CD to support this, but if operating system was pre-installed by manufacturer it may be setup to avoid this. If necessary, it may be possible to modify Windows registry to look for the original installation and service pack update files on the hard drive, thus avoiding need for CD.

....OUCHHHH! OOOH thats gonna leave a mark! Now I'm scared! I will definately need a compass to go in
there! Where can/ how can / what do i need to do to confirm ant of this in the "registry" I have a program called registry cleaner by "PC Registry Mechanic"??something like that on my Dell...would that be helpful? I could install it here and run it to get into the registry and make changes.....I am not this technically INCLINED mind you, and would be dangerous even in the store around someone working on the registry! help me understand where and how maybe I can find the info?![b/]

No guarantee on that, however.

My greates fear in" NO GUARANTEE!!!
Hey I do appreciate you attention on this amd I now see the reality of this tough at best and I have work to do... I may be better to sell it without an OS....we'll see how I do! Thanks again my friend fopr you help! Lee Jones/b/]

Solve : Sick Win XP Pro SP3?

Answer»

My PC was cycling between NTLdr is missing, NTLdr is compressed and Disk read error.
I have used the Recovery Console to copy NTLDR and NTDetect from my XP Pro SP3 disc. It then told me NTLdr was compressed but it's not compressed on the disk. I have tried TRANSFERRING on a stick from my other PC, same config, and it also tells me that NTLdr is compressed. Either it is not compressed OR it has been compressed after being copied OR it is not carrying out the copy. And then it will change its mind and tell me it's missing.
There is no pattern to the message I get.
I have demounted the hard drives and re-mounted with different cables.
I don't want the hassle of re-loading Windows and then having to FIRE all the software up again.
When I have been offered the Windows start-up options (only three TIMES so far) I have tried:
- last known config. - didn't make any difference;
- no auto restart - fired up Win and then gave me BSOD with trying to execute non-executable memory;
- Safe Mode - stopped dead

I then inadvertently let XP re-install (finger trouble). All I got was NTLdr Windows screen followed by BSOD "trying to execute non-executable memory" and 0x000000FC (0xB8557C34, 0x37636163, 0xB8557B70, 0x00000001). This has happened twice in succession. So even an XP re-install doesn't work.

Today I have spent 4 hours trying to get inside this beast. I managed to get into Safe Mode once. I checked System Restore but there were no points recorded. I tried Event Viewer and it said that about 10 drivers had not been loaded and there was some problem with ftdisk.
I renamed NTLdr and NTDetect and then copied both from my SP3 disc. They were immediately compressed. I de-compressed them.
I booted and got as far as my desktop for 5 seconds and then black screen, then blue screen with same message as before and physical dump.
Could someone please point me in the right direction? Could the disk controller be at fault or is it something different?
When you ENTER recovery console, type cd \ press enter

you will then be here: c:\>

then type attrib -c ntldr

press enter

restart the computer and see if it boots

Have you tried this method of un-compressing ntldr ?EEVIAC
Thanks for the response. I had not tried using the attrib command but I had managed to decompress the two files.
My problem has moved on in that I cannot get to the (normal) desktop for long enough to find out why I get the BSOD. I don't know where to look in Safe Mode since I have no idea what is blowing it out so soon after the desktop appears in normal mode. All it gives me is "trying to execute non-executable memory".
I now have two installs of XP in C:\Windows and C:\Win2. The new version seems to be working OK but obviously all my software is registered to the old instance. This is obviously not what I want but how easy is it to delete an old instance of XP? Or should I attempt to analyse and repair the old install?
With the new version working OK it would appear that the NTLdr and NTDetect problems have gone away (I hope) but having not identified the original problem I don't know if they will re-appear.Quote

Well, It looks like you have done as much as you can do.
IMO, this is a good time to do a image backup of your drive to another drive.
Next I would use the new install of XP to run a good AV scan on the system. Just to be sure. And type CHKDSK without parameters to check the disk.

Run hard drive diagnostics

Thanks. I run ZoneAlarm Extreme Security and have run a Full Scan across all drives - clean. It had not picked up anything in normal operation PRIOR to the problems. I have also run the MS MSRT - clean.
When I was having the original problems with NTLdr and NTDetect I had run ChkDsk and it corrected 4-5 problems but none since.
If I create a mirror image now it will include the two instances of XP. I do not really want to carry over the original instance.

JJ 3000
Thanks. I shall download the Hitachi and Maxtor tools and try them.

Is there a simple way of removing the original XP? Is there a simple way of bringing my Program Files folder in line with the new XP? Or do I have to uninstall and re-install all software?Do you have access to a windows XP installation disc?Helper4789
Yes, I have a Win XP SP3 disc which is the one I have been usingQuote

Do it anyway. You may have a unreliable HDD. Trust me. You want to make a true copy of it as it is. Then you can chose to either try to fix the original and make it worse, or work with a new drive and fix it right.

If you can nor fix the copy, you can not fix the original.
But in any case, you will have a backup. What you need to do, is boot from this windows XP CD, And click enter, then F8, and then click 'R' for repair. This should do the trick.

There is no advantage of a third party screenshot over the built in "print screen" button mentioned.

And a screenshot is not needed when working with text. The copy and paste mentioned above is much better when we want to paste to Word or ANOTHER word processor.Quote from: billrich on November 01, 2009, 10:10:46 AM

Not all that looks like text can be copied. And some THINGS disappear in a screen shot.
Did you try the program? It is awesome! It will save animations. WAV files. Selected areas. Lots more.

Solve : Windows Update - MS Office patches?

Answer»

ahhhhhh.......nice to see so many DISCUSSIONS, haha.

Anyway, really thanks. I did find it strange to have those UPDATES appearing cause I thought only the ones appropriate to my computer should appear.

Thanks againDid you install any VIEWERS?
If you had to install SOMETHING like Power Point Viewer then it's possible that the updates are for one of those.
Otherwise I WOULD suggest going through Add/Remove Programs and double checking what you have installed.

Solve : Gettin pictures from camera?

Answer»

My camera STOPPED sending pics to my computer. It was working perfectly but stopped and sent messages that the camera wasn't recognized.I followed all of Microsoft suggestions but nothing worked. Have you tried plugging it into a different USB port on your computer? If that doesn't work, you could try deleting the USB driver for your camera and reinstalling it. Those suggestions are free, but if they don't work, then a nearly guaranteed FIX is to buy a USB card reader and just put your memory card into the reader.

Solve : Windows wont boot (blue screen)?

Answer»

My cousin have toshiba l30-134 laptop with windows xp. When windows loading(windows loading screen) blue screen appears, and then the machine reboot. I tried every mode to load windows(safe mode, last good KNOWN config,...) but the machine show every time blue screen. And i cannot use any OS or toolkit boot disc because the dvd driver maybe have PROBLEM. Anyone knows if this laptop model have hidden partition for recovery? And how i do this recovery?
Thanks.
(SORRY if my English sucks) When you get the boot option screen (by pressing F8 at boot) have you tried "Disable boot on error"? Or you can boot to safe mode and to go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". Next time you boot the blue screen error should remain up - if it does, POST the entire contents here.Quote

Every time the laptop boot it shows this boot option screen. Whatever option i choose (safe mode, safe mode with lan, safe mode with command prompt, last good known config) it shows blue screen and then restarts. Now i don't tried this disable boot on error. And i don't remember either if in BIOS have this option. And this moment i don't have the laptop. Any other suggestion's? 1. Disable Automatic Restart. From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter.

This item became available with the release of Service Pack 2. It is not on the Windows Advanced Options menu of Service Pack 1.

Hopefully the machine will stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Record and post back with the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending software module it might name. A google search on these text strings or substrings sometimes provides problem resolution.

2. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the F8 key once or TWICE per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

3. Which Model? I don't know if there's a Recovery Partition on the hard drive. Go to the manufacturer's website and review the support documentation for that product. I was unable to identify your laptop on the Toshiba website (US). Perhaps if you provided a complete product name and number. Also not sure which country your model was sold in. The US website lists the following model names with a long list of product numbers for each one:
o Qosmio
o Satellite
o mini notebook
o Satellite Pro
o Portege
o libretto
o Tecra

Solve : All media on my computer runs too fast..?

Answer»

I'm not very computer literate and have no idea why this is happening, but all of the media on my computer runs just a little too fast. Whether it be MUSIC playing on winamp or videos on youtube or any other type of media. its not way too fast either, just slightly, which is no big deal for youtube videos but it makes all my music SOUND high pitched and off. If anyone can help that would be awesome. Thank you.If you are USING Windows Media Player, check in your Play Speed Settings.

Somebody may be trying to trick you. To be honest though, I don't see how that could affect YouTube.that has no relationship between youtube videos !That's a weird PROBLEM. I've had this issue with audio only which only required proper drivers, but not video. Do you take drugs?Quote from: progach on November 04, 2009, 09:28:14 AM

If you made another account that shouldn't of done nothing to the administrators.
if you can't access the administrators account i don't think any other type of an account can delete another account.Quote from: freakinerick on October 29, 2009, 09:49:27 PM

What is it you want to accomplish here ? ?

Ok, it's *my* PC. I made an account on it but I had been logging on the *Admin* account before that. Now I *can't* log onto the admin account because there's a new account up? I want the info I have on the admin; pictures, documents, saved game files and contact information. I can't access it from this new account and the admin is only accessible through safe mode from what I can understand.i have some option for you

copy all files you want in admin and then paste it on shared documents
or
edit the account you just added as a administrator..

1. Operating System. Is this Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?

2. Administrator Account. Is the previous "Admin" account you mention the ORIGINAL default "Administrator" account for the system?

3. Logon Screen. What screen are you logging in from? Is it a "Welcome" screen that permits you to select an icon for the desired user account (from among list of users)?

If it's the Welcome screen, hit the key sequence "CTRL-ALT-DEL" twice. Hopefully you'll get a login dialog box that permits you to enter user name and password for the desired account.Go to my computer, then C drive, and think click on documents and settings, then Administrater..What do you mean you can't access the other account, What kind of account did you make besides the administrators account, If it was an another administrators you'll probably be able to get your imformation back, If it was a guest account or another probably not, Well i bet a hacker could, I don't think microsoft or anybody else like the fbi and goverment will help you retrieve lost data, What happens when you click on the password nothing, When you reboot did you try to go into another account and log off and try your administrative account if you have another administrators account change the password of the other or is it when you click on the password nothing happens.

what happens exactlly when you try to access it you get to type a password in and nothing happens or does it let you type it in and i it keeps showing it's incorrect are do you type it in and nothing happens

Secondly make sure you have your password correct sometimes i forgot i changed it and i keep using the old one or i might keep trying a password i have for another account or you sure you didn't change it recently and may be ussing another you use alot by acciident.

Also I would try to change the password with the other administrators account

If that doesn't WORK go to the welcome screen then hit control alt delete twice so you have to type in the administrative account and password this sometimes works a few times i had to do this because it wouldn't let me type in a password.

I don't see why making another administrators account would do ANYTHING to the other maybe like the password being incorrect or not being able to type it in UNLESS somebody changed the password without you knowing with the other administrators.

Solve : New Windows installation..cannot install program and SECURITY/Firewall problem?

Answer»

Hi there.

My friend's computer had loads of ISSUES so we decided to format the hard drive and load WINDOWS xp SP3.

All is ok except for 2 things;
1. We cannot install any programs...any .msi install package comes up with the error "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package" error 1619.

2. We can't open Security or Firewall features in Control Panel.

I have done loads of research and have come to a HALT as nothing seems to fix the problems.

I have done a validation check through microsoft.com and the OS shows up as 'genuine'. I just think something went wrong during installation and a file is missing or something.

Please help.

Solve : How can I change the Taskbar ??

Answer»

I want to change the looking of the windows xp taskbar into either vista or 7 style.
Can I make it without using any softwares ?

I mean by modifying any system files...........http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/tune-02.html

If you have used a previous Windows version, you will probably notice that there is no Quick Launch bar showing. In Windows XP, the Quick Launch bar is off by default. To enable the Quick Launch bar, right-click the Taskbar, select Toolbars and click Quick Launch

You will also notice that in the system tray (which is called notification area in Windows XP, the Date and Day of the month are displayed as soon as you increase the height of the Taskbar. By default the Taskbar is Locked, so you have to select Lock the Taskbar to remove the checkmark in front of this option and be able to resize the Taskbar. If you add a new Toolbar - such as Quick Launch - the height will have already been increased enough.

I don't know about you, but I think that the default blue color scheme is ... WELL ... kinda blue! (probably my preference)... Anyway, I like the Silver color scheme better:

To change the color scheme, right click an empty space on the Desktop, and select Properties from the menu. Select the Appearance tab and choose a color scheme from the Color scheme drop down box. Besides the default blue color scheme, and the silver color scheme mentioned above, there's also an Olive Green color scheme... To be complete, I'll show you how your Taskbar would look with that last color scheme below.

A sharp observer would notice that the color of the Start button will always stay green. There is no way to change this, except with some 3rd party tools (such as stardock).

If you right-click on the Taskbar, and choose Properties, you'll get a number of ADDITIONAL customization choices:

•Lock the taskbar
•Auto-hide the taskbar
•Keep the taskbar on top of other windows
•Group similar taskbar buttons
•Show Quick Launch

Most of these will be quite self-explanatory, so I will just mention Group similar taskbar buttons here.
This new function is designed to reduce taskbar "crowding" by grouping similar Windows under one task button if the remaining space on the taskbar is running out.

Also note the context menu (when right-clicking on a button group), which has the option to minimize or close all the Windows of the group with just one click.

Now the default behaviour is that Windows will group task buttons by age (the oldest group first). But you can also change this to group by size (largest group first):

1.Start the Registry Editor
2.Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced \
3.Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
4.Name the new value TaskbarGroupSize
5.Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as it's Value data
6.Close the registry editor
7.Log off, or restart Windows for the CHANGES to take effect

You can also change the number of (similar) buttons that should be on the Taskbar before they are grouped by changing the Value data from the TaskbarGroupSize to another number (3 or HIGHER). To return to the default behaviour, delete the TaskbarGroupSize DWORD, or change the value to 0.
billrich , i like the blue as you said below

The only way to achieve what you want is to use a third party software package.lol, yeah, what would one expect? Oh, you want the windows 7 look in Xp? No problem, it's not like they completely redesigned the entire desktop architecture and display methods have switched from GDI to the DWM, just set "usenonexistentdesktopcompositionfromlat erwindowsversion" in the registry.

That CAN however, be achieved with third party components. a few searches for "make XP look like Vista" or "Make XP look like windows 7" yield some interesting results.Ofcourse I tried a lot in the internet world for the last 2 months, but I found a very little....

The solution not only modifying the registry entries but some what modifying the system resources and WRITING some key programming or concepts like desktop.ini files etc......

any way i'l try it. If any solutions find by u people intimate me.

Solve : Double entries?

Answer»

I have FIREFOX and IE browsers and Thunderbird e-mail.

When I open IE or Firefox two browsers open.

Also when on a secure site which requires me to select numbers from a number pad to FILL in a secure pin number or memorable date, one click of the mouse enters two numbers. I can not enter the cursor between letters in text, the word before or after are highlighted.

In Thunderbird, mail is opened in a new page every time, even though I have original page selected. It also deletes two messages when only one is marked for deletion

I have uninstalled FF and reinstalled it, also SET the mouse click to slow. It appears that two clicks are happening on one mouse button.

Any HELP please?Do you have another mouse you can try? Or, try your mouse on another computer. What a quick reply. Thank you,
I can borrow one, will keep you posted. Thanks for the help. The mouse was the problem.

Solve : Annoying problem?

Answer»

Running Windows XP Home SP3
A while ago I installed Phantom Cd and then UNINSTALLED it again, but now the name for drive F has been screwed up. Whenever something is plugged in which doesn't have a name (such as my memory pin) it GETS called "Phantom CD Drive" and the icon is the one that is for unknown files.

Any ideas? System restore didn't FIX the problem.Try Revo Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/would I have to reinstall phantom CD first?First try WITHOUT reinstalling. Revo will FIND any remnants. If it doesn't find any then yes, reinstall then uninstall with Revo.
