Solve : Setup File Error?

Answer»

Hi everyone!
This is my first post and YES, I have a problem

The problem is, I'm trying to install some softwares from a DVD, but every setup file file on that DVD looks like that DXSETUP icon:

And WHENEVER I double click on any setup file a DOS window opens for a second & the closes immediately & nothing else happens.

So I wanted to KNOW if anything can be done or all those files are corrupted? Evey file other than setup files works normally. Copying the files into computer doesn't work.

Please let me know if anything can be done. Thanks!
Well, what exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to install a certain VERSION of DirectX? The latest one? What are these files and where did you get them from? Those look like .rar files to me...
The installer file may be corrupt also.It may be helpful if you repost your screenshot, but with files listed in "Details" form, not icons.
Also,

Tools > FOLDER Options > View > Remove the tick from 'Hide extensions for know file types'

I'd say that whatever you're trying to install isn't installed from this folder.

Patio is right, check your motherboard drivers if your network card is BUILT into the modem. If your card isn't built in or you're using some other type of connection with your modem (i.e. USB), check the drivers for the card and modem.

If all your drivers are updated and installed CORRECTLY, check the cables and power to your modem/router and make sure it's connected to the internet properly. (Most modems/routers have a light that INDICATES this, check your user's manual for your particular model)Is the power light ACTIVE on the card? Thanks for your help.

Solve : My Stupid Computer?

Answer»

Hi Everyone...

Running XP Home Edition SP2.

I have just rebooted my computer and found out, all my settings and documents are gone.

I have not modified anything recently.
Haven't being "tweaking" anything.
Recently did a virus and spyware scan.
Logged on with the same account.

For no reason at all, my documents are gone and my settings have being discarded.

Recently installed the "Royale Remixed" theme, which isn't malware.

This is the second time this has HAPPENED. Anyone know how to prevent this from happening again?

Thanx. Yikes!

I just found out my documents are located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP

Doesn't sound good. Need help fast!
MEANWHILE, I'll try to copy my account profile...C:\Documents and Settings\ should only list 4 folders:

1. Administrator
2. Your user folder
3. All Users
4. Default User (hidden)

There may be ADDITIONAL named folders if you have more than one user account registered with Windows.

As to what that TEMP folder is, I've never seen one located there before. FIRST thing, copy that folder and put it somewhere safe with a new name. TEMP folders can't be trusted and that could get deleted automatically. I'm gonna dig around and see if I can find more information on any situations like this.Thank you Quaxo.

I created a new user account and recovered my documents from the TEMP folder. Everything is working.

Again, thank you.Oh good, glad you got that sorted out.

Solve : Icon Change?

Answer»

I was given some World of Warcraft thing wich changed my desktop to waorld of warcraft. I didn't like it, changed back, and now my Microsoft WORD documents have a different icon! How can I change this back? I've poked around a bit in the control panel, and I tried changing the icon but I couldn't find where to do it. Any ideas?

RUNNING XP SP2
Word 2000Open "My Computer"
"Tools" menu
"Folder Options..." (last thing listed)

In this dialog box, click the "File Types" tab
Scroll down the list to 'DOC' and SELECT it
Click "Advanced"

Now in this new window that should open, you can change what the file type should be REFERRED to as, what icon it uses, etc.Right click on Word icon, click "Properties", Shortcut tab, "Change Icon".I tried both these THINGS and it didn't work - it didn't display the old icon. But i fiddled around a bit and worked it out - some weird setting which i can't find again.

Thanks for your helpI'm glad, you figured it out.

Solve : Hard Drive replacing each other?

Answer»

Today, I reinstalled windows xp, because apparently, our computer got a few viruses that we were unable to get rid of.

I copied everything important onto D Drive (because viruses are on c drive) and nuked C Drive. INSTALLATION worked perfectly, I was able to reinstall everything back onto the computer. However, when I opened D drive to reclaim all my documents, instead of finding the 'D' stuff, I instead find the stuff previously INSIDE C-Drive. Everything, from the program files, the pictures, documents. I haven't found any of my old D-Drive documents, so apparently, C-Drive replaced D-Drive or something. At the moment, D-Drive has EVERY SINGLE FILE that used to be in C-Drive (including important ones like 'WINDOWS' and 'system 32')

Now, obviously, I tried to open a few of the programs in D-Drive. The funny thing is, a few of the programs (like firefox) works, but other programs doesn't (like Microsoft Word, which gave me an error that says "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application.")

I checked the 'Add or Remove program' window to see if the programs were installed into the computer, but nothing was listed there but my DRIVERS. The programs that worked, such as firefox, didn't show up on the program list, even thou I can run it just fine. I then tried to create a desktop shortcut that LINKED directly to the program in D-Drive, but when I click on the shortcut, it doesn't connect to the program.

I haven't tried to drag over any files in D-Drive just yet (other than the 'My Pictures' folder) in fear of the old viruses reappearing. I guess the main question is : Can I delete the old programs in D-Drive? If I do, will it affect the things that are in C-Drive? Any alternate solutions to my 'double drive?'

P.S: Before you ask, I nuked the CORRECT drive while reinstalling windows. I triple checked that I was deleting C-Drive, and not D-Drive, so don't tell me that I deleted the wrong hard drive.Quote

How did you copy files? How did you 'nuke' C:?

You might say that but to me it still sounds like you deleted the wrong drive... There is no way the entire content of your old C drive could copy to D by it self.1. Hard Drives. How many physical hard drives are on your system?

2. Logical Drives. Are "C:" and "D:" on the same physical drive?

3. Define "copy". How did you copy everything important? What software did you use? The Microsoft "copy" command, drag and drop?

4. Define "nuke". How did you "nuke" the "C:" drive? What software program did you use?

5. Windows XP Installation. What did you use to re-install Windows XP?
a. Microsoft Windows XP Setup CD (Retail CD)
b. OEM Windows XP Setup CD
c. OEM Recovery CD (aka Restore CD)
d. OEM Recovery Partition (aka Restore Partition)

6. It sounds like you did a "clean" install of Windows XP from either Microsoft Windows XP Setup CD or OEM Windows XP Setup CD. If that's the case you need to re-install all of your applications to ensure the new operating system recognizes them (adds application installation data into the Windows registry). Generally you would install the applications from their source CDs or download files. If you have access to the source files (and any product key numbers you might need; e.g. Microsoft Office), then you won't need the programs on the D: drive.

Solve : Laptop Is Seriously Goosed...:(?

I'm sure this whole problem started by downloadin some sort of virus and it's being doing ma head in ever since! Basically when the laptop is turned on it loads up as supposed to, even loadin passed the windows XP loading screen, but after that it just restarts itself. This is a continuous process and extremely irritating. I tried booting the Windows XP CD but once the key is pressed to boot the CD, the COMPUTER just hangs with the message

"press any key to boot from CD"

How on earth can I get access to my files on the Laptop because I really can't lose what's on it.

anyway sounds like the same think that happened to my computer, I never got it to work but i just got a new HDD, the old one was crap anyway. i guess copy the files from UR HDD onto another HDD and install the new one into your computer.you can do that by getting an 2.5 inch to a STANDARD ide plug transformer. this allows you to connect your laptops hdd as a secondry drive on a desktop computer and copy asll of the data. a bit of mucking around with the bios may be requiredQuote from: Dudweiser on November 20, 2007, 04:19:46 PM
How on earth can I get access to my files on the Laptop because I really can't lose what's on it.

If your files are really that important, it's usually best to back them up before mucking around with the hard drive.

It bothers me that you were unable to boot from the CD drive, but ignoring that for the moment, you can continue your efforts to boot from the hard drive. Power up the laptop, tapping the F8 key about once per second (or wait for the keyboard LEDs to flash and then tap the F8 key). Hopefully you'll get the Windows Advanced Options MENU displayed. Attempt to boot using the normal "Safe Mode" option. Note any error messages that appear and post them here.

If not successful and no error messages, repeat the process selecting "Last known good configuration". Note any error messages and post them here.

If not successful and no error messages, repeat the process selecting "Disable automatic restart on system failure". Hopefully you'll stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Copy the exact error message text and numbers and post them here.

If none of the above yield a positive result or error messages, post back and we'll move on to something else.

Solve : Blue Screen Of Death problems?

Answer»

hello i'm NEW here i wanna ask how can my laptop reboot when it is staring the windows setup? Meaning that the BSoD comes out when the laptop's starting the winsdows setup. And then after 0.1 SECOND the BSoD comes out then the laptop reboot. Before the windows setup comes out there was a message that SAYS windows have problems.. please choose wheather safe mode..., last known good configuration, start windows normally.. so whats the problem?? For your information i do not do anything the last time i use the computer. I shut down properly like always. I am using Compaq presario v3000, windows xp sp2, 512 ram, intel inside dual-core... thats all
It sounds like Windows is already installed, so why are you trying to set it up? What exactly are you trying to accomplish here?should just reboot to a new os.1. At this point no one knows what the problem is. Need more information...

2. I'm assuming you're just trying to boot your Windows system and are NOT yet attempting to re-install the operating system.

3. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The BSOD is trying to tell you what the problem is. If the system restarts before you have opportunity to read the BSOD, you need to disable the automatic restart.

Power up your laptop. As it starts up, tap the F8 key about once a second (or wait for keyboard LEDs to flash and then tap F8 key). For Windows XP SP2 you should get Windows Advanced Options menu. If the option "Disable automatic restart on system failure" exists, select it. This should PREVENT the restart and allow you to read the BSOD.

Post the "exact" error message text and numbers here. Usually you can search for exact message or substrings of message in Microsoft Knowledge Base and/or Internet for cause and resolution of error.

4. Which of the Windows Advanced Options menu items have you tried, if any?

If you don't care why the BSOD occurs or what it says, you would normally try the "Safe Mode" option followed by the "Last known good configuration"Quote

when it is staring the windows setup? Meaning that the BSoD
Are you trying to reinstall Windows?
What is EXACT BSOD error message?

Solve : C:\windowssystem32\QPRAGENT.EXE?

Answer»

I have a very annoying problem, I frequently get a black popup window[simular to the OLD dos window] which says " C:\windowssystem32\QPRAGENT.exe.
This window just flashes on the screen ,then goes away, but it is very annoying when it KEEPS flashing when I am trying to work.If the path you typed is CORRECT I may suspect a virus or ad/spyware is running it, although a google search returned no results which I find just as odd as this behavior.

1. Run your virus software (Mcafee/Norton)
2. Run your spyware detector (spybot/ad-aware)

if that fixes it stop there. If not, see if it is in your startup or in your taskscheduler - try disabling it from there. You can also try renaming the file -
rename c:\windowssystem32\QPRAGENT.exe c:\windowssystem32\QPRAGENT.exek.bak

Sounds weird to me. Id that the correct path and filename?

Solve : Video issues?

Answer»

Hello,
well i was playing a game yesterday, and all of a sudden my monitor got a bunch of lines, colors, and flashings boxes on it. I restarted it, and it still gets the same problem. The problem starts as soon as i TURN it on i cant see the LOGIN screen, the windows xp sreen, or even the loading screen. I really need help becuase my 14pg term paper is on there and i need to get it out pronto. I also CONNECTED the computer to a different monitor , with the same problem. also i know the computer is working becuase i hear the windows log in sound, and i can see images in the background, but i cannot make out what the images are.
Windows XP, 1.6ghz p4, 512ram, ati 7500 radeon series.you have already switched monitors and had the same result, sounds like you need to reinstall your video drivers, if that doesnt work your video card has failed.i cant reinstall the driver, because from boot up i cant see anything on the screen, but boxes lines , and colors, ill be lucky to make out anything behind thatok, remove the graphics card and clean it with some compressed air. clean the fan (if applicable) and clean the contacts on the graphics card and on the motherboard. if that doesnt work, i would suggest a new video card. Will it boot into Safe Mode?well thanks for your help it did not work so i guess ill have to get a new video cardit boots perfectly fine, i can see that things are going so in the background, but i just cant see it clearly enough to decipher what it is saying. What happened in Safe Mode?i could not get it to boot in safe mode, because i cannot see what is happening behind the boxes and lines. You don't have to see anything...
Restart your computer, and start tapping F8 key to get to Safe Mode.okay i did that and the screen still has the same PROBLEMIN Safe Mode, your screen had very same distortion?
Interesting, since in Safe Mode, Windows doesn't load original video card drivers.
In that CASE, you need to hook up your monitor to different computer. Maybe monitor is going south.Quote from: Broni on November 23, 2007, 09:31:25 AM

Solve : Colorize WinXP??

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way too colorize XP's stock themes like you can colorize the Windows CLASSIC themes? I do NOT want to use a program that runs in the background (windows blinds for ONE example), I was wondering if there was some modification to windows i can make to colorize the XP themes the way I like. I can only seem to find pre-made skins on google, and programs that must run in the background, However, a program that does not have to run in the background to hold the modified colors to XP's themes would be fine. I am tired of the dull look of windows classic, and I'm also tired of the whole "Microsoft Windows XP brought to you by Fisherprice" look that XP has boasted since its beginning, i have tried the Royale Theme, boring. Royale, like the stock XP themes, cannot be modified like windows classic.

To summarize in short what I am TRYING to find:

I need a program and/or modification to XP that allows me to colorize the title bar, window, text, start menu, scroll bar, menu, ect. in the Windows XP Theme in the same way the Windows Classic Theme can be colorized, or in a similar fashion. The program cannot run in the background, which is why I am open to modifying XP to allow the XP Theme to be modded like the Windows Classic Theme. So far, i have come up with zero useful programs or modifications.

Thanks in advance.Right click desktop -> Properties -> Appearance tab -> Advanced

I believe this is what you're looking for.Quote from: quaxo on November 23, 2007, 11:15:02 AM

Right click desktop -> Properties -> Appearance tab -> Advanced

I believe this is what you're looking for.

No, sadly, it is but it isn't, XP cannot be fully colorized without some sort of third party intervention it would seem. below is an image, as you can see, when a color for the "3d objects" is selected, it does not affect the whole window in the default blue XP theme, just parts of it, in truth, most of the window stays unchanged, where as the classic theme rainy day changes fully. Is there any way possible to change the look of windows XP, up and down. Another thing, the title bar coloring cannot be changed in the XP theme, nor can many other things, i find this RATHER annoying seeing as this theme seems to be so workable. Thanks anyway though, maybe we can find something to change XP's standard themes.

[saving DISK space - old attachment deleted by admin]I see. The only way I know of with XP to do that is with programs like Windows Blinds, which you said you didn't want to use.

I don't know of any programs that modify Windows but don't run in the background.

Solve : Retrieving e-mails that are long deleted?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

This may be one of the strangest questions questions POSTED here.

A little while ago I had to take my COMPUTER in because it had crashed. When it was returned I found e-mails in my inbox that were at least five years old. I had deleted them way back then but there they were again. I found while parusing them that they were a useful tool now. I was wondering if old e-mails are stored in some magical place in a computer that they can be brought back. I could USE some of the info from that timeperiod.that should not happen for which old emails that you sure you deleted "magically" reappared in inbox due to computer crash fix.

but are you using some windows live or outlook program?

but if you are using something like a ISP's email system, ISP's might keep copies of your old emails. NOT for soliciting nor do you have to worry about privacy, BUT if you were to get into any legal issues requiring email check.

Other than that, i don't know why you get very very very old mail back if you certain it's gone the first time.Yes,

These e-mails JUMPED out right away because of the date. I was really strange to say the least.

I just use outlook express for e-mails.

Too bad it would have been helpful.

Thanks for everything.

system restore might give you back older emails that existed on that particular restore point. But not 5 years old?

Solve : Defragment is incomplete?

I am running Windows XP Professional on a DESKTOP computer. I have Norton AntiVirus installed. I tried to RECENTLY defragment my computer and it defragmented all of the files except the Symantec files which were heavily defragmented. How can I fix this? You have to disable norton because it cannot be defragmented while it is running because the fragmented files are in use. Disconnect from the internet (so that you don't get any viruses), close norton, and RUN the defragmenter again. BTW, how do you know its the norton files?Run it from Safe Mode.I know that they are Norton files because when I reviewed the report after DEFRAGMENTATION, it told me what files were fragmented.

Solve : Creating batch files for few useful settings or configurations.?

Hi

Can somebody HELP me to create the batch files to change the IP address.
1) Batch file for setting the STATIC IP address.
2) Batch file for setting the Dynamic IP address.
3) Batch file for protecting the SYSTEM from USB Pen drives (Enabling/Disabling USB write & Detection of it.)

Regards,

Why do you want to do this from a batch file? There's a handy little utility called netsh that comes with Win2000 and forward that'll allow you to do all sorts of IP configuration things, such as:

netsh interface ip set address name="LAN1" static 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.2 1

and...

netsh interface ip set address "LAN1" dhcp

Solve : Opening mpegs from websites?

Answer»

I'm trying to open mpegs from a website, and my computer was automatically opening them with quicktime. I also have WMP 11 and realplayer installed. I played around with 'set program access and defaults' on the start MENU, to try and change the default to WMP but now mpegs won't open directly at all - computer asks me to save. Any ideas how I can change my settings?Save the MPEG file to your desktop, and then right click it, and select "Open With..."
Find Windows Media Player, or the player of your choice.

If you cannot open it in Windows Media Player, you need the codecs. DOWNLOAD K-Lite Codecs Pack (Full version, free) from here: http://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

I don't know what browser, you're USING, but in Firefox, for instance, you need WMP plugin installed in order to watch on-line videos in WMP.there might be option to "open in windows media player" or something similar. That way, when you click on mpg link, wmp will automatically load and play file WITHOUT you saving it first.

SOMETIMES, you have to save to computer before you can play.

I am using firefox, and that is how it worked for me.

Solve : Installed XP over a partition that already had an existing xp installation.?

Answer»

Ok here's the story:

I was using my computer and i right clicked on the recycle bin and clicked "Empty Recycle Bin" and i got the BLUE screen of death.. Restarting didn't work as i got it every time before it would load. Anyways that's in the past. I called out a technician who replaced my hard drive (which had failed causing the blue screen). I told him I needed the files on the old installation of XP as i had spent 4 months working on them with no backups (dont have a go at me about that lol).. Anyway he said he would install XP over my old partition as the old one still failed to load giving a blue screen (so the windows was CORRUPT he said). So now i have my new xp installation over the old one. I have all the folders for the programs i used to have still in the program files folder, but none show on the start menu or in the add/remove section of the control panel. Some launch from the folders, some don't. So that wasn't and isn't good, Still not solved that. Also I wanted to access my my documents folder from before so i went to C:/Documents&Settings/name of my old my doc folder. Except it says "C:/Documents&Settings/name of my old my doc folder is not accessible, Access Denied".

My questions are:

How do I get access ( i am obviously logged in as administrator for the computer) to the old my doc folder.
How do i get all those programs back on the start menu and on the add/remove programs section of the control panel.. do i need to reinstall them all?

Many Thanks for your time and help.

Psy/ AlexUm... ok. The tech replaced the HDD because it failed? And installed XP over the old partition?

Could you try to explain that a little more clearly, because that makes no sense.

If the hard drive was replaced, where did your old files come from? Were they copied or was the drive not actually replaced? Can't really help if the explanation makes no sense.he said that my harddrive had failed and he replaced it with a new one. i watched him do that..

then he installed xp over the old one which was there on a partition and now i can see the files when i go to a program and click open but i can't access them or open them.

I don't know how they are there as he removed the harddrive. well im pretty sure he did, he said he did lolBetter check with the tech to see exactly what he did. While we can guess at the changes made or exactly what the tech did, we could be very wrong. Check with him and see what exactly he did with the hard drive. Was it replaced and the old files copied over or did he just reinstall Windows over the old one and not replace the drive?i cant get hold of him, hes a call out one from dell. lets look at it this way.. if he removed the harddrive the files wouldnt be there as he didnt copy anything.

so lets SAY its the same one..Well, if he didn't replace the drive, it would be HELPFUL to know what he DID do to PUT you in the state you are in now.

Meanwhile, reboot in safe mode, try to access from there.i cant access in safe mode either:(What the 'techie' did is questionable but you could try:

1. Take ownership of the folder/files - see here.

2. Mount the hdd in another pc and copy files for backup, then sortout the OS problem.

OK we won't give you a hard time about lack of backups but if the hdd has failed catastrophically your chances of recovering all your hard work are kinda slim...

Good luck.

Dusty is correct...you need to take owneship of those files in order to have access to them.
As far as programs being there they will not run properly because you are running a new installation of Windows.
They need to be re-installed on the new OS and then they will work and also be shown in the Start menu.thanks for your help guys.. I downloaded a program (before reading this) called NTFSdatarecovery.exe which searched the old installation and found the files and sent them to the new one so i have them all now:) thanks for taking the time out to help me..

Many Thanks.

PsyPsy - thank you for coming back to report your successful outcome and how you achieved it.

Good luck.

Solve : Phone calls using broadband connection?

Answer»

Hi again.
I have a questions regarding making calls from a PC.I dont have an internet connection on my home computer. But i'm going to get one soon. Can i make calls to all the phones (mobliles and land lines) around the world with the Skype or the Yahoo messenger?
Remember, i'm in india.
There are options for broadband speed-128kbps,256kbps.
Which option would be better for making pc to phone calls?
Thanks in advance...
immuHello again

Both Yahoo, MSN, and Skype can make calls to Mobile and Residential phones (I would call or contact each company to check and see about your country first)

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/
Tell us what up speed, and what down speed you have.

If you have at least 300KBPS, then I would say that 256KBPS would be the BEST for your internet connection (providing you are limiting your internet browsing while you are making a call)
If its below 300KBPS, then I would recommend using 128KBPS.

The higher KBPS rate (kilobyte per second) the better your connection is.

(Note: Connections, and every data transfer are also measured not only in Kilobytes, but BYTES, megabytes, and gigabtytes. ) skype can call anywhere. You can call other skype users free. Or you can call cell phone or LANDLINE users for a fee.

you live in india, so you would need to check their procedures on connecting you to landline or cell phone calls.

And yes, you need broadband internet to make calls from online. 56K modem is too slow.

The faster the internet connection speed, the smoother your call will be. If 128 KBPS vs 256 KBPS, 256 obviously is better, but 128 might be tolerable to you.

Solve : HELP!! I am stuck on the windows "login to windows" screen...?

Answer»

I think that I may have used a corrupted exe file in my laptop and now I am unable to get past the log-in screen using any of my past logins. just hitting enter as I did before this problem, will not work. I have alot of files that I do not have copies of that I can not loose, if I were to reload windows XP pro again. I can get to the drive by hooking it up to another computer, but I cannot get into any files under "user". I can go into "all users" and one other user shown in the list. But when I try to go into "user" file, it says that I do not have permission to access this file. That is the mode I was in for all of my work to be saved in. It is the same situation in safe mode when I BOOT in safe mode. Can anyone help or suggest what to do? Dimarrco Try This...Thank you so much!!!!
You just made my day. This worked perfectly. DimarrcoPatio, can I do this with the entire drive? DimarrcoI believe you need to do it a folder at a time...but you could try it on C: and see what happens.I re-installed xp pro a little while ago, after doing this I was denied access to slave E:. This was unfortunate as I had put all my music, docs...etc... on this drive. Got round it by taking ownership of the WHOLE drive (slave E:) so the answer to your QUESTION dimarrco is yes!

I want to thank you all for your help. It is a done deal. I have access now and can retreieve the files. DimarrcoI have another question to this... now after being able to get into the hd and files as needed, can I put the drive back into the laptop and boot up into the password screen as before and be able to not have to put a password in and work from the laptop? or do I have to save info as I had planned onto another disk? DimarrcoNo.
File permissions have nothing to do with the OS password permissions...i'm afraid if you re-install the drive you will have the same scenario.
How did you lose the password ? ?

You could try booting into safemode and setting a new password...

Safe mode won't let me get past the screen either. I think that I may have used a corrupted exe file in my laptop and now I am unable to get past the log-in screen using any of my past logins. just hitting enter as I did before this problem, will not work. I will retrieve the files I need and reformat the drive. DimarrcoI don't see how any corrupt .exe would compromise the login process but a format and clean install is probably the way to go...
You may also want to start considering a good solid backup strategy at this point as you got lucky this time.

Solve : Need help with administrator password / recovery installation?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm a new user here.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 running on Win XP SP2.

I did something stupid a couple of days ago and now i find myself up poop creek.

Essentially what happened is I installed a Bittorrent client to my laptop to try and download something that i could not find commercially available. I didn't have time to wait for the WHOLE download so i cancelled and uninstalled the Bittorrent client.

After the removal of this client i found that i no longer had any programs listed underneath "Start --> All Programs". The programs are still there in their appropriate directories.

I have searched the internet on this one and have found that the recommended advice has been to check for virii and then perform a repair installation of win XP.

I am here in Bangladesh and I brought with me a winXP cdrom. I booted from this CD-ROM; hit "R"; selected "1" and then was asked for the administrators password. Well, i don't have an administrative password within the "Users" function in the control panel. So, I have to assume that this is a password that would have been required to be entered when winXP was installed on this system?? It has been a while so, i cannot remember whether or not I was prompted for a password.

Could anyone help clarify this? What password is windows looking for? How can i find this password? (I.e. is there anything short of formatting my hard drive and STARTING from scratch (not an option right now, i'm in Bangladesh and i NEED my laptop up).

Best regards,

Wesley McKenzieBy default the Administrator password is blank.

Another option is to use System Restore and restore back to a day prior to your Bit TORRENT install.

Alan <>< I agree with Alan...try just hitting Enter when prompted.
ok -

I apologize for not stating this when i originally posted. But, when i was prompted for a password, I did in fact in hit . The repair would not go forward.

I did try to do a restore prior to the date of the Bittorrent install, however, it did not solve the issue. I will try to go back a little further and see what happens.

PS - could one of you guys fill me in on what actually happens during a repair? I am stuck in Bangladesh about 10k miles from home and this laptop is my only means of communication to my WIFE etc. (plus i'm going to be out here for almost another month).

Best regards,

Wesokay - issue is now resolved.

thanks very much for the help.

The solution ended up being going a little further back on the system restore.

I lost one program that i had downloaded / installed - but.. that's a small pittance to having everything up and running properly again.

Thanks again!

WesGlad we were able to help

Solve : disk space?

well several of my drives show more disk space occupied then there's material present in them.i know the concept of hidden files.so dont tell me that there must be hidden files that im not takin into account.Windows version?
You discovered it in what way?windows XP.....well if i click on the drive N click on properties...its like i get 3 gb free space.......but when i open the drive n select all the files(including hidden ones)free space comes out to b more than 3 gb....Click start, run, type in CMD and hit enter. Once the prompt comes up type in CHKDSK C: and hit enter. (Or if it's the D drive in question, type CHKDSK D:, ETC.)

Let it scan the disk, and see if any bad sectors are reported.

Solve : UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME?

Answer»

Dell Inspiron B130 laptop
Win XP SP2
Hard drive is Western Digital

Problem:
Blue screen of death.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
STOP: 0x000000ED (0x82390E30, 0xc000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Can’t boot up computer. Can’t boot from safe mode or any of the options (last known configuration, etc.)

Downloaded the 6 floppy setup bootdisks from Microsoft to get to the recovery console. Can get into the recovery console but cannot run chkdsk. Gives me autochk.exe cannot be found. I’ve tried specifying c: \windows\system32. No dice.

Then ran FIXBOOT c:. Restarted but still get blue screen of death same error msg

I have a lot of PHOTOS on the laptop that I was about to back up the same day the blue screen of death appeared. Bizarre coincidence but…my main concern is getting to those photos and saving them, but I’d also like to try to fix whatever the problem is.

My next step is to download the diagnostics for the western digital hard drive once I open the laptop and find the exact model or whatever. I can’t get this info. By going into BIOS.

Any help would be appreciated. For ex. Should I try the fixmbr or leave it alone for now?

Thanks.

Try chkdsk /r.
Then after that try fixmbr and re-boot.Ok. Will try this. Except now it's telling me that floppy #6 is damaged so I have to run the set again. So, I can't get to the recovery console. I'll be back later then.

HeleighAfter trying "Patio's" instructions and if you are lucky enough to possess an actual XP Pro Disc you could try a repair installation, as long as you do not go as far as formatting the drive data can still be rescued, so make make format the last resort.
You could also try a Live Linux like Knoppix Live from here:- http://www.knoppix.net/get.php,
download the Free ISO using a Torrent, burn it to a CD then run that it will load into Ram and then ith all the software in the CD you can examine the Laptop drive, then if the Laptop is capable of networking you could transfer all the data and photos you want onto another computer. floppy data damage unfortunately is very common when trying to make any XP rescue disk set. it is not a very reliable tool.Yeah, I've discovered that. This is the 3rd set I've made. Or more correctly my DAD has been nice enough to format for me since he has win xp home ed. as well. I have a desktop with win2k so can't even create the floppies from my computer. Major PITA!!!!UPDATE -- Success

For anyone else with this problem:

Previously when I entered the command chkdsk /r I got an error about autochk.exe not found. Typing in C:\windows\system32 did NOTHING to alleviate the situation. The autochk.exe file is found on Win2K (my desktop) and can be used. My dad couldn't find it on his WinXP Home computer BUT was able to find it on the installation recovery disk.

Anyway, I was able to download autochk.exe to a floppy (A: drive) and then place it in the A: drive on the laptop. BTW, my laptop didn't come with a floppy drive only CD-Rom so I bought an external floppy drive that plugs into the USB port.

That did the trick and I am now successfully running chkdsk /r on the laptop.

LATER:
It says it found and fixed one or more errors on the volume.

Next, I TYPED exit to escape the recovery console. It restarted and the blue screen came up again. So I rebooted and went to Last Known Good Configuration and Win XP started right up. Success!!! I am now furiously moving my pics to thumb drives--just in case.

Thanks.
Heleigh

PS I didn't need to run fixmbrQuote

The autochk.exe file is found on Win2K (my desktop) and can be used.

Not sure why it would be on your Desktop but for future reference it can be found in 2 locations in both XP and Win2K:

Winnt\system32\dll cache
Winnt\service pack\i386.

From the XP CD just search for it in i386...

Solve : Multiple My Documents folders?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home Edition Service PACK 2 (build 2600), and IE6, SP2. Did a clean Windows install on November 15.

When I go to Windows Explore I have two Anna Ruth DOCUMENTS. Right under Desktop is shown My Documents and it has all of My Documents in it. Under Local Disk C, are an All Users folder and an Anna Ruth folder, which lists all of My Documents. But the Anna Ruth folder also has a My Documents folder which again lists all of My Documents.

Also, in Explorer, listed after Control Panel are another Shared Documents folder and another Anna Ruth’s documents folder and in that folder are all of My Documents again. Seems I have duplication. When I used my backup CDs, guess I did something wrong.

Now I am thoroughly confused. Can I delete one of the My Documents folders? Thanks very much.
This means that at one time or another you created a user ACCOUNT with the name Anna Ruth.
Each user set up in Windows has it's own Documents and Settings folder and then one for All Users and yet another for the main account or what's called the Administratoe account.
It probably would be best to compare the main My Documents folder with the Anna Ruth My Documents folder before DELETING it as they may not be exact DUPLICATES and you might lose some things.

Hope this helps and i haven't confused things...Thank you, Patio. I will do that when I get back later today. Appreciate your help. You're more than Welcome...that's what we're here for.

Solve : Using computer as phone 0_o?

Answer»

Is it possible to use your computer as a phone? I have a modem and have used with aol dial up. I think that it is the same concept when the aol uses the modem to dail out and comunicate with the server. i have FOUND prgams like skype and gismo PROJECT but they use my bradband internet to call out. i just want it go through the phoneline pluged into my puter and use the exsisting phone service . This doesn't make sense. You have broadband but you want to use your computer make phone calls through a dialup modem? WHY?

As far as I know, that's not possible. And, again, it MAKES no sense. If you have broadband, then use a service such as Skype or Yahoo Messenger to make phone calls from your PC. a modem cant act as a regular phone? Going thourgh braodband it seems more complicated.....i want tpo do what this guy is trying to do... http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic61857.htmlI use Yahoo Messenger's PC-to-phone feature for making phone calls via my DSL Internet connection. I don't see how this can be more complicated than trying to use a separate dialup connection for PC phone calling. Just install your software (Skype or whatever) and setup the hardware you need. The only additional hardware you'll need will be a mic if you use your regular speakers for listening to incoming phone conversation, or a mic with headphone if you'd rather not use your regular speakers for this.

Besides avoiding unnecessary complexity with trying to use a dialup modem for this, you're very likely to have better QUALITY sound with phone calls made via broadband.

After looking at the link you just posted, I get the impression you may be thinking the other party must be using a computer to receive a phone call made by someone using their computer to make phone calls. This is not the case; you can call any regular phone from your computer via software using a broadband connection.

As I said, I use DSL. Do you have DSL or CABLE?

Solve : Window Disappears to Task Bar if Cursor Moves Outside Perimeter of Window HELP???

Answer» HI GUYS,

I found this site surfing for help with my problem. I don't remember how long it's been but I have just dealt with it forever it seems. OK here's my problem. When I open a new window in IE and if I move the cursor outside of the window unless I enlarge the window, it disappears to the taskbar. So when the window is small the way I bring it back up again is to hit Alt +Tab and it pops back up but if I'm not careful and don't enlarge it to fill screen it pops right off again. Very much a hassle but have been dealing with it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about. It may be a ferature for the blind or deaf or something. I must have been playing around and changed a setting and have had this problem ever since. Now I WOULD love to be ABLE to go back.

Solve : HP Compaq d220 MT that is giving me some problems?

Answer»

I Have a HP Compaq d220 MT that is giving me some problems.

I just installed Windows xp version 2002 w/sp3. When I start up I get windows ok, ALONG with the THREE users that I originally set up in the old version.

When I start user one it COMES up ok showing the normal desktop. Then a splash panel appears; AirGFCG.exe Entry point not found.

Very shortly after that it attempts to set up my photo gallery. During that process it stops to ask for the photo gallery on a CD. I do not have such a cd, so the process stops dead and I can not continue "the installation until I find it".

Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Dan PageAre you using a retail copy of Windows, or a version SUPPLIED by the company? Thanks for the reply, GRIFF, most appreciated.

I bought the package from a local computer store.

DanFrom what I have found, AirGFCG is used to monitor a D-Link Wireless adapter. Are you using one? Thanks. Yes, I do have one of those and I just discovered, on another thread, what the problem is and now have that one fixed.

I still have no word on the Photo Gallery, however. Is it Windows photo gallery it's trying to set up, or some BS thing from an HP printer or something...

I got a feeling you got a printer driver that tried to install one of those useless photo suites, and it's trying to finish it up with the CD.

Solve : boot problem--always goes to chkdsk?

Answer»

I'm running XP Home with 2Mb RAM. A few weeks ago my laptop started something new on boot-up. It presents the following screen:

"Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is FAT32. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within 10 seconds."

If I press a key, boot-up continues without any apparent failure. Everything seems to work OK.

If I do not press a key within 10 seconds, the following screen appears:

"Windows will now check the disk.
Volume Serial Number is 320D-180E
Windows is verifying files and folders.
0 percent completed."

At this point, the computer freezes; no disk checking is done; I have to press the power button for several seconds to shut down the computer. Then, turn the laptop back on and it all starts over again.

Several times I have run Chkdsk /f on the boot drive (C:). Once it found a problem and seemed to fix it. Regardless, every attempt to reboot brings up the same dreaded attempt to "check the disk."

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!Hello
If u have Restore disk that came with the laptop, don't use the disk. Try to barrow a XP Home edition from someone. If u have Win XP CD boot from it and do like if u r going to install Windows, but do not CHOOSE THE OPTION REFORMAT. Keep following the instruction and u will get to a option that states fix this Window Install. Select this option and let it run. Write back with the results.Boot to the XP CD and choose the FIRST repair option, which will take you to the recovery console. Once there, run chkdsk /rClick Start, then Run, type cmd, and click "Ok".
At the prompt in the command window that OPENS, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
and press "Enter".
Does the result of this indicate the drive is "Dirty"?
Broni - as you probably know, autocheck runs when it detects a dirty bit. Unfortunately it does little (actually nothing) to repair the situation. I've always found the best solution is to run checkdisk with the /r switch from the RC. I agree, but chkdsk may go into a loop for other reasons too. That's why, I asked. Thanks to Midsail and Allen (but I have no XP disk).
Thanks to Broni for the suggestion to try: fsutil dirty query C:

The response I received is: "Volume-C: is dirty"

Is there a magic "soap?"Quote

Is there a magic "soap?"
LOL

Pretty much what Allan said. In more details....

* If you have SPYWARE Doctor installed, uninstall it.
* If you have ZoneAlarm installed, open it, click the "Overview" tab, then select "Preferences", and UNcheck the "Protect ZA Client" check box.

Click Start, then Run, type cmd in the Open box and click "OK".
At the prompt in the Command window, type the following commands, pressing "Enter" after each one:
Please, note the spaces.

* chkntfs /d <--- (This will reset autocheck options to default...will come back invalid on some installations)
* chkntfs /c C: <--- (This will allow checking the specified drive )
* chkntfs /x C: <--- (The x switch tells Windows to NOT check the specified drive on the next boot)

At this point, restart your computer, it will not do a chkdsk and will boot directly to Windows.

This next step is important as this is where the Dirty Bit will be unset.

Click Start, then Run, type cmd in the Open box and click "OK".
At the command prompt, type the following, pressing "Enter" after each one:
Again, note the spaces.

* chkdsk /f /r C: <--- (To manually run a full chkdsk operation on the specified drive)
* Y <--- (To accept having it run on the next boot)

This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset the Dirty Bit.
Be patient...this is a very thorough check and will take quite a while.

Finally, when the chkdsk operation has completed, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
press "Enter", and Windows will confirm that the Dirty Bit is not set on that drive.

Reboot again and see if chkdsk still runs on startup. The simpler method is to download the recovery console .iso from (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212). Burn it to a cd then boot to the recovery console and run chkdks /rMany thanks to Broni and Allan. You are very kind to try to help.

Per Allan, I downloaded the .iso, copied it to a CD, and tried to boot from it, but unsuccessfully. I used "F2" at the beginning of the boot process to enter the setup and made sure CDRom preceded the hard drive for boot sequence. I still could not boot from the CD.

So, I tried Broni's steps.

I do not have Spyware Doctor.
I do not have ZoneAlarm.
(I use CA Internet Security Suite.)

All PROCEEDED well with the "chkntfs" commands. As indicated, the next boot went fine with no attempt to "chkdsk." Then, I entered the "chkdsk /f /r C:" command and answered "Y" to accept it to run on the next boot.

On the next boot, the same old screen RETURNED, indicating that the disk would be checked if I did not "hit any key" within 10 seconds. So, I did not hit any key. After 10 seconds, disk checking tried to start, but everything froze at "0 percent." All I could do was shut the computer down.

Then...I went through the entire procedure again...all the chkntfs commands... reboot... chkdsk /f /r C: command... and reboot again. This time, I did hit a key within 10 seconds, and got the message that "disk checking had been canceled...Windows has finished checking the disk"...after which bootup continued normally.

Bottom line...I cannot seem to run "chkdsk /f /r C:" no matter what I do.

Once again, thanks for any additional suggestions.
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to DISC" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.Quote from: rasteeg on October 18, 2009, 08:38:27 PM

How long do you wait before hitting the power button. With FAT32 file system, it takes awhile to get off "0 percent".You can't just "copy" the .iso to a cd, you need to burn it to a cd using a program (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm)Again, thanks to all who have responded. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the reminder about "burning" not "copying." I went back to the "recovery console .iso" per Allan's comment, burned the .iso file, booted from it, and endeavored to run chkdsk /r. No go. It just sat there. Would not get past 0 percent, even after 6-7 minutes.

Per Broni, I went to http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287... and downloaded the windows hard drive diagnostics for my drive (Seagate). The drive flunked the first short test, and the instructions advised downloading the DOS version of the diagnostics and run the "long version of the test" which could also do some repair. I did so.

When attempting to run that longer test with the repair option, the test froze at the beginning and would proceed no further.

However, perhaps all is not lost! The last 2 times I have booted the laptop, it has booted normally (without that ornery chkdsk screen). Maybe something among all the attempted fixes worked without reporting that it did so??? If this is not the end of the story, I'll try again. However, it may be, so once more, THANK YOU ONE AND ALL who have offered such helpful advice.

Drive failing any manufacturer test is not good news

Solve : Strange formatting, possibly java related.?

Answer»

I bought a used Toshiba Tecra laptop from a friend a while back. Windows XP, 512 mb ram, 1.6 ghz. I noticed from the start that the formating on multiple applications was wrong. It's most obvious on WEB browsers: some buttons aren't colored right, some are invisible, text is in the wrong place, etc. I thought that maybe something was wrong with my Java, but I updated it and it didn't get any better. I updated XP with all the PATCHES and securities, still doesn't work. The problem isn't the browser, because both IE and Firefox have the same problem. I also see it when I use Mcaffee. It also seems to affect Flash video: I can't fullscrean them on this computer.

My friend had all sorts of crap on this computer, which I removed mostly because I didn't need it, but also because alot of it had various malware. I'm afraid that I might have deleted a DLL file or messed up the registry when getting rid of all this crap, but I don't think I did anything particularly unusual, and I'm pretty sure the problem started when I first got the laptop. I've done everything I can think of. Anyone have any bright ideas? The first thing I do when I buy a used computer is wipe it out and reinstall the operating system. Do you have the Windows CD or a recovery partition?no such luck, I'm afraid. How long have you had it?
Have you TRIED doing a system restore?Over a year and a half. I got it mainly so I could write a paper--sometimes home is too distracting. It works fine for that, it's just very anoying when I use an application that has LOTS of Java-type buttons (don't know if that's what it is or not).

It's funny, but I hadn't considered doing a restore. I don't have any important applications that would be negatively affected, so that might just be the solution. I hope, anyway, LOL.It may have recovery partition...

Hold down the 0 (zero) key and TURN the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.
Looks like I only have two restore points, and they're recent. Oh well

I'll give it a shot......Nope. They did not give this particular laptop a recovery partition.Does the problem affect browsers only?
Any errors in Device Manager?

Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

Same problem in Safe Mode/Safe Mode with Networking?According to Here... they may still be available...Nice find

I got rid of all your unneccessary !'s...
I hit f8 got to the blue screen and it says UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME. ***STOP 0x000000ed (0x86360138, 0x0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)It looks like file system got messed up.
Do you have Windows CD?

Start with...

If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight COMMANDS you must enter in sequence to repair your problem..
NOTE. MAKE sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow INSTRUCTIONS from Step #3 above.dont have a cd drive i have an acer it is a mini laptop maybe i can somehow hook it up to a cd drive?Creating a USB bootable XP recovery console: http://tuts4tech.net/2009/07/14/creating-a-usb-bootable-xp-recovery-console/
I assume, there is USB port.Wow...
That's all i can say.

Follow Broni's advice if you want to get out of the woods...

Probably would have been helpful to let us know there was no CD device...saves time.
