Solve : Dual Booting XP and Vista File Access W/ Separate HDDs??

Answer»

Is it possible to add a hard drive with XP installed on it to a computer hard drive with Vista installed on it (assuming there is room and that I know how to), and still access the drive that I'm not using at the time?

For example, if I booted to the XP drive, could I still access files on the Vista drive?
Would I have to change any settings in Vista?

Thanks for any help, sorry if this is in the wrong section. As long as you can find drivers for both operating SYSTEMS for your computer you can.The chances of just swapping an XP HDD into a different system than XP was installed on and it working correctly are slim to none.
This is by design.

However it does not need to be able to boot to XP for you to access the files on it normally...
Simply hook it up as a Slave drive and you can use it...

Not sure if this is what you are asking here thoughActually, I was asking about the reverse; booting to the XP drive and accessing the files on the Vista drive. Would it help if I changed the Vista drive to the slave drive and SET the XP drive as the master drive?Assuming you've properly setup your dual boot configuration with two physical hard drives INVOLVED, you can access user data files created while running one OS during a session running the other OS. Does that answer your question?

If you have your dual boot setup properly done, there's no need to change master/slave settings. Quote from: AnonymousPerson on November 04, 2009, 06:56:16 PM

You need to look in the BIOS options and see what can be done. The BIOS may have an option to 'swap' the boot drive. On some PCs there may be th option to boot from one of five different devices. Or more.
About the files system. Both XP and Vista use the same NTFS file system. Right now I am on my XP system, but I can peak into both drives and all partitions. But some files I can not easily modify, they are protected by the other system.

So yes, put your XP system into the PC. The limitation is if the XP system was working earlier on that very same PC. If not, you may have a hard time. It has SOMETHING to do with HAL. Different PCs have different HAL files.
The keyword HAL is in the CH database if you wait more info.
Ok, I'll TRY that. Thanks for the help!If XP wasn't installed to that drive on this exact machine you are going to have issues...

Solve : Need help with writing a BATCH file to uninstall XP Killbits..?

Answer»

Hello all. I have batch file that I have written that works very well but it requires me to press OK if it cannot find a file for it to continue. Here is one of the lines I am using:

start /w C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB974455$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

What I would like to know is:
1. ) What statement would I put in to have it continue without hitting "OK" if it cannot find the file to uninstall?
2. ) Once it is completes I would like a pop-up to say COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY.

Any ideas?

Thank you,
MaelstrumQuote

I doubt you can. The OK SCREEN is issued by the program spuninst and is not an external instruction.

Batch code does not do pop-ups, but you can issue a message on the console using echo.

If the /w SWITCH is for the wait parameter, I think you have to spell it out. Someday SOMEONE will have to explain the /wait parameter to me. Why not just run the started commands in-line?

well the wait parameter will be important if you want to know when the program is done. for example, think of a program that executes notepad, archives the file notepad made, and repeats. Assume also that it has the logic to change the file name each iteration or something...

Code: [Select]:start
echo create a text file
notepad file.txt
move file.txt archive\
goto start

this will simply start notepad until memory is exhausted.

with wait:

Code: [Select]:start
echo create a text file
start /w notepad file.txt
move file.txt archive\
goto start

it works as required.

Also, I believe the installation packages posess either a /s or /q switch for silent operation. You are correct about the spuninst switches. You can use either /quiet for quiet mode (no user interaction or display) or the /passive switch (unattended mode).

Code: [Select]:start
echo create a text file
notepad file.txt
move file.txt archive\
goto start
Quote
this will simply start notepad until memory is exhausted.

Not quite. After the echo statement is executed, notepad will launch and the batch file will wait for notepad to be exited before executing the move statement. Notepad and the cmd interpreter execute in separate address spaces, with the batch file being interpreted and executed within the cmd.exe address space; when notepad terminates, Windows will free up any memory used by the notepad task and proceed to the move instruction. The memory used is not cumulative.

I still fail to see the difference between start /wait and running a program in-line.

START was first released on windows 95.

Windows 9x did not run programs "in-line" and automatically ran them out of process.

The change for NT was that the command interpreter now uses "WaitForSingleObject" on the returned ProcessID from CreateProcess() after executing the program. In this CASE, notepad.

Therefore, START was essentially created originally to allow for synchronous execution of external programs, such as notepad. Now, with NT we can use it to perform the same asynchronous execution that was provided by default with 9x. So yes, the /WAIT parameter is redundant in the context of the NT command-line.

Yes, notepad is notepad.exe, cmd is cmd.exe; separate. However, assume for the moment we are running on 9x (because I was unaware that the behaviour changed to default to what used to require a start /wait). in that case, notepad would constantly be executed; the interpreter does not wait for the program to finish with 9x. Eventually, memory would be exhausted due to all the notepad windows. (not necessarily from all the programs running, since every notepad program will share all the same executable code pages)

Solve : How to begin set up of a web page for my club?

I am a motorcycle rider and I am INVOLVED in an all women group and my problem is we have lost our web address because the one who was handling it got into an altercation with another member and she shut it down. I want to design an all new one with at least our logo on it and START from basic. I don't have the experience that the women who STARTED has so I suggested to the group that we start with something basic like the club logo first then add a CALENDAR to let people know when we have the scheduled meetings and locations we meet twice a month the beginning of the month is a MEETING and the end of month is like an eating where we get together and have a meal and socialize. We also need to have an area where we can post our meeting minutes. I know this will be a big project to start with so I am looking for someone to help me thru this. I have alot of questions the first lady did not explain what was going on with the web site and everyone was scared to talk to her about it. I will be the first to say I am not an expert at any of this but someone has to make the first step I am hoping I don't make to many mistakes and not get it off the ground. [Saving space, attachment deleted by ADMIN]Not a big deal one way or the other, they're just lost chains. Say yes. Then boot to the recovery CONSOLE and run chkdsk /ri'll try it now but what is a lost chain and truncatedA lost chain was once part of a file but because of a problem they lost connection with that file and no longer have any reference in the file table, so the OS really doesn't know they exist. The usual cause for lost chains is an anomalous shutdown of the system. They are GENERALLY not an issue.i did that , took a long time , is that it ok now

Yes, it should have taken a while to run and yes, it should be fine now.

And note - you spelled "anomaly" wrong Unless the files listed are important to you as data files there is generally no reason to convert the lost chains to files; it's usually better to just delete them and free the space.

Yes... lost chains do consume disk space, and they are still listed as used clusters in the FAT; they are not, however, associated with any files. This can happen, for example, if a delete operation is interrupted, or even disk corruption that finagles with the files clusters, so that the first cluster for example no longer points to the second.

The FAT and FAT32 file systems where these errors occur (NTFS is "immune" to these types of errors for the most part, since it implements journalling and allows the operating system to undo nearly any action performed on the drive), store a file as a "chain" of occupied clusters.

The File Allocation Table itself only points TOWARDS the first occupied cluster of the file. Each cluster points towards the next occupied cluster in the chain. (it usually tries to puke the file in a straight contiguous line, but sometimes it has to dry heave to skip over already occupied clusters). Once completed- tada! the file is stored.

The issues result when either a physical error occurs writing or reading the data or more commonly a sudden power loss during a critical time in a read or write operation. For example,if one was to overwrite a file, the files clusters will be overwritten. Assume for the moment that a smaller file is written over a large one, and just as the last cluster is written, there is a power outage.

What results? Well, quite possibly the last cluster of the new file contains only a portion of it's data, and the remainder- including the pointer to the next cluster- is still the same as before- so what we have now is a large fragment of the saved file and a fragment of the file it overwrote all, according to the filesystem, stored in one file chain. This doesn't result in either lost chains or lost clusters.

Whatever causes it lost chains are just that- lost chains of clusters that don't belong to a file but are marked as allocated. Cross-linked files as I explained are when clusters are shared between files, this is almost never intentional.

The opposite error is a "cross-linked" file, where it isn't that no files reference the cluster, but where multiple files do. In such a case one or both files are usually corrupted.Quote from: Allan on November 06, 2009, 05:48:16 AM

how to change windows xp to windows 7
A VALID Credit card will work! Only way I know to install from XP would be to upgrade to vista. Then upgrade from vista into windows 7.

You can't upgrade xp directly to windows 7This would certainly be messy...and probably not worth it.

2 people tried this method at another FORUM i volunteer on and both machines exhibited issues...most notably they crawled along like turtles.

A clean install with Win7 is highly recommended.

There's always the option of him keeping the XP install and dual-booting to Win7...personally, I always use an OS upgrade as an oppurtunity to up my hard drive size.

I have win7 but I'm sticking with vista until I do just that (I did give win7 a run around in ol' VMWARE, though.

Trust me, the game did not influence your UPS - they fail after a while, it is only a battery.
It also did not CAUSE your computer to overheat - that would be either poor ventilation, lack of cleaning, or OVERCLOCKING. That's just to start the list.

A game will not cause your computer to fail because you played it too much.{EDIT} OOPS posted in wrong thread by accident.Quote

This is also one of the problem. It's laptop not desktop ( see my specs) so under it i don't have any ventilation providers. but it became too late, even I played without the protection case it became heat........It was not playing the game that caused the hardware to fail though, it was poor maintenance or just the age of the hardware.ofcourse maybe....... it became 5 yrs.

Solve : Thinking of reseting to defaults, But I want to save personal files?

Answer»

I am having a problem on my computer and its becoming more and more clear that I should just bite the bullet and reset my computer to default, Only deal is losing personal data. I have 2 hard drives, ONE main and one extra for personal storage (Both internal BTW). So when I reformat, does it just do my main one or will it do it to both? Or How can I restart my computer and safely keep all my personal files intact?I suggest backing up the files to the second hard disk, then re-install the OS to the primary hard disk. I would suggest using a Repair Install first.

What OS are you using? You may copy your data files to any off disc media (external hd, cd, dvd, ETC) and then copy it back after a new install.I am using XP SP2 I think, but I already have personal Data On my other internal hard drive, is there a way to save the stuff on a specific hard drive and restart the main one with the computer files?Yes of COURSE. Let's stop using "other" and "specific", okay? What drive letter is the data currently on?All the main computer data is on drive C. I keep all my personal data (Music, pictures, etc) on what I called drive Z.If you format drive c:, drive z: will not be affected. I'm not sure what you mean by "main computer data" though - do you mean just the OS and system files or are there data files too?Main computer Files = WINDOWS, Program Files, Program Data, Drivers, Etc.That's fine. As long as z: is a separate drive or partition it will not be impacted by anything you do to c:Yes, I am pretty sure it is since I installed myself, but how can I go about reformatting manually, is there a way to access it from like the system boot menu or BIOS menu? I have a CD but its very ambiguous on what it does. I put the CD and boot the CD from menu and it gives me a WARNING. Personally I was hoping for a non-destructive restore if you get what I mean.Do you have an original XP CD or just a restore disc? If the latter, what type of message does it give you?I do not have a XP disc, I have a "restore DVD". When I boot to that disc it prompts a message: Full System Recovery/Factory Recondition, All Data will be lost, Y/N to continue, Y = Format Drive and Install new OS.Okay, again - that refers only to the system drive / partition (c:). Any data on a separate drive or partition will not be touched. If you are concerned though, you can do one of several things: copy critical data to off-disc media (cd, dvd, usb drive, external drive, etc), USE a disc imaging utility to image your z: drive, or use a backup utility to copy your data to a backup file off disc.

But as I said, the restore utility will only effect c: drive.K, thanks for the info.
Sure

I think maybe has some kind of freaky thing about how you install the drivers.
I think you have to install ALL of the drivers for the motherboard, then the Video and last you do the sound.Or something like that.
Also, the Windows Media Player does not like other media PLAYERS.
i am totally ok with geek check your drivers installation.i think suerly its the source of trouble Hey thanks for your replies. I have done all that with no luck, still locks up when loading and the music is still all slow. I just don't know whats up with it, it was the perfect machine before I got a virus or whatever it was that screwed it up! grr! Anyone have anymore ideas? Thanks alot! OK. In your case it may be the way you removed or repaired the virus damage.

You may need to do some repair work on the OS.

In XP you go to the command prompt and type in:

SFC /scannow

(Ask me why I have trepidation about the SFC program.)

You may want to post a HiJack this log in the Malware forums here just to make sure you did indeed completely clear the viruses from your system. And did you reformat before reinstalling the OS?Quote

TIME [/T | time]

Type TIME with no parameters to display the current time setting and a prompt

Using Computer Management You might need to be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to perform some tasks.

Computer Management helps you manage LOCAL or remote computers using a single, consolidated desktop tool. It combines several Windows administration UTILITIES into a single console tree, providing easy access to a specific computer's administrative properties and tools.

Open Computer Management (Local).

Notes

To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
For information about using Computer Management, click Help on the Action menu in Computer Management.
For more information, click Related Topics.

User Accounts overviewA user account defines the actions a user can perform in Windows. On a stand-alone computer or a computer that is a member of a workgroup, a user account establishes the privileges assigned to each user. On a computer that is part of a network domain, a user must be a member of at least one group. The permissions and rights granted to a group are assigned to its members.

User accounts on a computer that is a member of a network domain

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to use User Accounts in Control Panel.

User Accounts allows you to add users to your computer and to add users to a group. In Windows, permissions and user rights usually are granted to groups. By adding a user to a group, you give the user all the permissions and user rights assigned to that group.

For instance, a member of the Users group can perform most of the tasks NECESSARY to do his or her job, such as logging on to the computer, creating files and folders, running programs, and saving changes to files. However, only a member of the Administrators group can add users to groups, change user passwords, or MODIFY most system settings.

User Accounts lets you create or change the password for local user accounts, which is useful when creating a new user account or if a user forgets a password. A local user account is an account created by this computer. If the computer is part of a network, you can add network user accounts to groups on your computer, and those users can use their network passwords to log on. You cannot change the password of a network user.

Notes

You cannot create groups using User Accounts. Use Local Users and Groups for that purpose.
In User Accounts, you can place a user in only one group. Usually you can find a group with the combination of permissions needed by any user. If you need to add a user to more than one group, use Local Users and Groups.
To improve the security of a password, it should contain at least two of these elements: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. The more random the sequence of characters, the more secure the password.
If you want to set up other password requirements such as minimum length, expiration time, or uniqueness, open Group Policy and go to Password Policy. For more information about changing password requirements, click Related Topics.
User Accounts on a computer that is a member of a workgroup or is a stand-alone computer

There are two types of user accounts available on your computer: computer administrator and limited. The guest account is available for users with no assigned account on the computer.

Computer administrator account

The computer administrator account is intended for someone who can make systemwide changes to the computer, install programs, and access all files on the computer. Only a user with computer administrator account has full access to other user accounts on the computer. This user:

Can create and delete user accounts on the computer.
Can create account passwords for other user accounts on the computer.
Can change other people's account names, pictures, passwords, and account types.
Cannot change his or her own account type to a limited account type unless there is at least one other user with a computer administrator account type on the computer. This ensures that there is always at least one user with a computer administrator account on the computer.
Limited account

The limited account is intended for someone who should be prohibited from changing most computer settings and deleting important files. A user with a limited account:

Cannot install software or hardware, but can access programs that have already been installed on the computer.
Can change his or her account picture and can also create, change, or delete his or her password.
Cannot change his or her account name or account type. A user with a computer administrator account must make these kinds of changes.
Note

Some programs might not work properly for users with limited accounts. If so, change the user's account type to computer administrator, either temporarily or permanently.
Guest account

The guest account is intended for use by someone who has no user account on the computer. There is no password for the guest account, so the user can log on quickly to check e-mail or browse the Internet. A user logged on to the guest account:

Cannot install software or hardware, but can access programs that have already been installed on the computer.
Cannot change the guest account type.
Can change the guest account picture.
Note

An account with the name "Administrator" is created during installation. This Administrator account, with computer administrator privileges, uses the administrator password you entered during setup.
Note

User Accounts is located in Control Panel. To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.

Solve : NTLDR issue.?

Answer»

Yesterday my computer was very slow and was RESTARTING on its own so I DECIDED a clean up was required so I put all I wanted to keep on cds. When I tried formating it it would not boot from cd which I later resolved. I had to go into BIOS and switch the boot priority from floppy to cd rom. I booted it from cd and started the format but at 27% when copying files it said it could not copy a certain file so I tried reinstalling xp. I let it do it's thing again and it shut itself off in mid process of installing xp. I Turned it back on and NTLDR missing showed up and boot from cd no longer shows up anywhere. My guess this is a SERIOUSLY corrupted Windows but I don't know how to FIX this mumbo jumbo. Help would be much appreciated.May be your os cd was scratched, try another one. no problems came with any files at installation a bad installation would result this issue. May be at that time(27%) that file was not copied...

If the installer does not remove the extra files there is a reason.
It may be necessary to roll back an update.
There are no service packs 1.1, or 3.5.Where did you happen to actually find those service packs? I'm just curious.I suspect, he may be talking about .NET Framework...Are you talking about folders? If so, tell us the exact names and locations of the folders you want to delete. Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 07, 2009, 05:54:26 AM
Hello,
Now let me try. Your title says you cannot change the desktop picture. It in your post you indicate that you can change pictures. This leads to some misunderstanding.
What you meant to say was that you have not been able to edit large pictures with him MS Paint. The built in pictures used as backgrounds in Windows should not be altered.

In general terms, desktop backgrounds are MADE from photographs saved in the day he JPG format. The size of about 600 x 800 should be suitable.

One way to collect new background photos is by visiting sites on the Internet that feature photos that are suitable as backgrounds. In Google you can search for images and when you FIND one you can make it full size and then with your mouse to a right click and you should sign something that says save as background or save it as wallpaper.

This file might be stored in a different location than where you would expect it to be. For example, in Firefox it is stored in a separate area, yet Firefox tells the system to look for the background in that area. So later, when you go to change your background from the standard list, you will not see the background that you saved in Firefox. Instead, you have to browse over to the specific folder that was used by Firefox to save your background image.

You should not have any trouble editing the new pictures in MS Paint. You should limit yourself to either the JPG, BMP or GIF file types. PNG may also be used, but the files size may be larger than needed. As you found, MS Paint may not work right with other format types.

Do not use Regedit. It is not a image editor.

Abut paint do this, open paint=>archives=>use as background picture then I get error that I need to save first.

Abut regedit if you open regedit go the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Wallpaper and you can Change the background picture

Ok so lets summarize
I can't browse a other picture
I can't Change in regedit
I can't boot in SAFE mode and change
I can't use a 3 program to change the background
I have change the name and the extension on the files
The files are not corrupted
The picture is not corrupted
And I'm not trying to change a picture

I know I forget something but I am SURE you gays will say it.

Edit:
Now I remember
I can change to the regular Windows Picture

Solve : Dual Boot Xp problem?

I've just set up a dual BOOT system Windows 7 Ultimate (RC) with Windows XP SP3.

Windows Xp does not.

Been googling with no help. Any ideas?Safe mode gets it to the same point, Windows XP blue welcome screen then screen flashes on/off continually. Even lets you move items from one startup location to another (ie, hklm....run to hkcu.....run or user startup or "all" startup). It's the first item pinned to my starup MENU. Solve : Booting from USB?

Answer»

So I have an Asus Eee Laptop. I have created a rescue USB[definitely made correctly] using unetbootin(or whatever its called) and I changed the boot order to boot only from "removable device". When I boot up my laptop(with USB in of course) though it says "PLEASE insert bootable media or change the boot order".

Also I only have three options in the boot order; HARDDRIVE, CDrom(which I don't have), and Removable Device [Or Disabled].

Any ideas? Try booting to the device on another machine ...but my bet is it isn't built properly and won't boot on another machine either...Alright Ill give that a try..Just tried on a different Laptop also with XP, and it works just fine.

I do notice that on my laptop the boot order says "removable device" but this ONE says "USB device", so maybe that is the problem? Either way, I only have the above mentioned options in boot order, so what can I do? Went to the Asus forums, and found a thread with the same problem. Just Insert USB stick and tap ESC while booting...it gives a list of available boot devices. Choose USB.

Thanks anyways Patio. That's a nice feature for ASUS to add....saves ALOT of grief.

Glad to hear you got it SOLVED...

Solve : Wake from standby via mouse?

Answer»

I would like to wake from standby with the mouse. Windows XP and USB mouse. In Mouse Properties, I have selected "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby." However, I see nowhere in the Power Options Properties to activate this function. Something I'm missing? Is it a usb mouse? If so, I believe if you change the SETTING in power options to disable selective power saving to usb devices it should solve your problem. I'm not 100% certain because I've never used sleep. Instead I just set the HD and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. It's easier on your system, uses fewer resources, and is fail-safe (COMPARED to sleep & hibernate which can sometimes be problematical for many users). The power scheme I'm using is the "Home/Office Desk" DEFAULT:
Turn off monitor: After 1 hour
Turn off hard DISKS: After 1 hour
System standby: After 1 hour
System hibernates: Never

I just noticed I have the USB mouse plugged into a PS/2 adapter. Nowhere in the Power Options Properties is there a "power saving to USB devices."

All that aside, would it be better to just set the monitor and disk to turn off (not system standby). And if so, can I still wake it with the mouse or keyboard? In ADVANCED POWER SETTINGS for your profile there should be a USB SETTINGS option. But yes, in my opinion it is better not to use sleep. I have my hd & display power down after 30 minutes of inactivity. And yes, the mouse should be able to bring the hd & display back to life.I have no options for usb or mouse or keyboard in the Power Options. I just went to "Help and Support Center" and read this:

During Windows Setup, ACPI is installed only if all components present during Setup support power management. Some components, especially legacy components, do not support power management and can cause erratic behavior with Advanced Power Management (APM), or may prevent ACPI from being installed. Examples of such components are Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) components and an out-of-date BIOS

I've had my mouse and keyboard for forever ... can't seem to part; maybe that's the problem?

Solve : cd/dvd drive no longer working?

Answer»

I have a popup when powering up my computer and my cd/dvd drive doesn't work anymore... It reads:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Program: C:\programfiles\DISC\DISCover.exe"

This APPLICATION has requested the runtime to terminate it in an UNUSUAL way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I just reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I then installed Norton 360; then I downloaded Quickbooks Premier 2007 over the internet, then I installed Microsoft Office Pro 2003 by disc. That's the last disc that my computer read. Since then I can't use my cd/dvd drive/burner.Does it work in safe mode?
Have you tried going back a few days using the system restore?
Disable DISCover.exe from startups through "msconfig".First of all Thank you to all who are trying to help me. I definitely want to figure this problem out rather than buy a whole new computer.

I started in Safe Mode and still could not see my cd/dvd drive.
I tried to restore to the point before I installed Microsoft Office. It wouldn't let me.

How do I disable DISCover.exe. I typed msconfig from Run. Where do I go from there??

More info on my computer:

Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Click Options, then Hide Microsoft Entries.
Click File, then Refresh.
Go File>Save, and save AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
Attach AutoRuns.txt file to your next reply.
"How do I disable DISCover.exe. I typed msconfig from Run. Where do I go from there?"

Under the Startup Tab. Clear the

  • check by clicking the check. Then click apply and then click OK and then reboot.
Here is the info. I hope I did it right.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]I don't actually see any DISCover.exe running.
Go to Program FILES folder.
Do you have DISC folder there?
Does it contain DISCover.exe file?Yes I found it in my program files in the DISC folder. It is an application called DISCover version # 3.33.2005.406
What should I do with it? Will removing it fix my cd/dvd drive? How should I remove it???
Thanks again for the help.Rename DISCover.exe to XDISCover.exe
Restart computer.I want to be sure I am describing this DISCover file correctly. There is a program file named DISCover. However it does not have the .exe next to it. When I place the mouse over it, it comes up as" Description: DISCover Drop & Play System Executable" It then says Company: Digital Interactive Systems Corporation.

So I just right click on it and rename it XDISCover.exe
and restart my computer

ThanksYes.Thanks again for all of your suggestions

I tried everything you guys suggested and still couldn't get my cd/dvd drive to work.

Finally after midnight I reformatted my drive again and reinstalled Windows, all the updates, all my SOFTWARE, their updates and lastly I installed my Norton 360 anti everything and knock on wood everything is working great. (for now at least)Good job
Thanks for posting back

Solve : Opinions on passwords....?

Answer»

Hi,

I have Windows XP on my laptop and was wondering if using an administrator password is really any protection?

If my computer is lost or stolen is there any point to using a password as I have been TOLD that this is easily circumvented using safe mode, or password recovery software, etc.

Any tips or input are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again (for all the great help in the past).

SampNo, Administrator passwords are useless. You can encrypt, RESTRICT or lock specific files or folders if you like, but admin passwords can be circumvented easilyThink of putting a password on your comp as the same thing as locking your house or car. Even though it is easy ENOUGH to get into EITHER your house or car when they are locked you still lock them any way.

Other then using a password to protect your sensitive info like banking details or credit card info you MIGHT have on your PC having a password also helps keep people like kids and others that might not know what they are doing from getting on your comp and generally messing things up.

So yep it is worth it to have a password on your comp and you should definitely change the password on your Administrator account. Just make sure it isn't the same as other accounts and that you can remember it.

Yes and no. It's the IP address of your computer, but more than likely it's a "PRIVATE" IP address known only within your Local Area Network (LAN). Most LANs use private IP addresses. When they communicate to and from the internet, the private address is translated at a gateway router to the "public" IP address of its Wide Area Network (WAN) interface using Network Address Translation (NAT). From the internet's point of view, they are communicating with the "node" at the WAN address (public IP address).

This accomplishes two things:
o It conserves the dwindling number of public IP addresses.
o It shields your computer from the public (internet).

To see the "public" IP address that you send and/or receive from, enter "www.whatismyip.com" into the address field of a web browser.

Well let me ASK this.

the name I gave my computer is a Word and some numbers.

Is this what is used if I had my computer connected to a lot of computers say like in an office???

All the computers would have a name and that is how they talk on the office networjk??

Yes or No

Solve : Folder Size?

Answer»

In Windows Explorer, we can see the file SIZE in "Detail" view.
How can we see the size of the folders just like the files?

As my drive is running out of space, I would like to quickly identify the large folders so that I can RELOCATE them.

Thanks. In Detail View the parent folder size should show (approx) in the bottom Explorer pane...
If not this setting can be changed in view options...just point the arrow (the mouse )on the folder and you will see the size. You COULD also USE Folder Size.
It adds a column to the detail view which shows the size of both files and folders.

If you want a more visual way to find what is taking up disk space, you could use a program like DiskSpacio or WinDirStat. Thanks Kip! That's what I'm looking for.

Patio/Crinale819, I know the way you suggested will show the folder size, but I would like a list view rather than checking the folder one by one. There are also Explorer REPLACEMENTS that will display the folder size just like the file size (ie, http://www.xyplorer.com/)

Solve : Fan won't start when booting from XP?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Dell INSPIRON 1501 aptop running Windows XP Professional. About two weeks ago, it BEGAN to shut down suddenly, after only about a minute turned on. After a LITTLE bit of investigation, I realized the fan wasn't turning on, so the computer was shutting down to avoid overheating. But then when I booted from Hirens, the fan worked, telling me this is a Windows problem.

In a thread I read elsewhere, someone having a similar fan problem reinstalled Windows and that fixed it. But I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

Thanks for your help,
CassidyI doubt this is a windows issue and it just KEPT running a bit LONGER from the boot CD...
What happened prior to this ? ?

Solve : Win XP installation problems?

Answer»

I've been using Vista on my computer, but now I would like to have my olde good XP installed, but I can't install it. It formats my HD ok and copies the files, but when it's supposed to start the installation it just gives me an error about. Something about 'Drive read failure' (Sorry I'm Finnish so I don't know the exact error in English)

My HD is connected with SATA CABLE and I've HEARD there is some driver problems with XP. I've tried to find the drivers for my motherboard (Abit NF-M2SV) but I couldn't find them. I don't have a flobby drive so I don't know how to get them installed anyway.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get XP installed or should I just quit trying (really bad)

Thanks in advance.Driver Site

You need to DLoad the RAID/SATA drivers and burn them to a CD...
Very early on in the XP install process at the bottom of the screen you will see a prompt "pressF6 if you need to install third PARTY drivers"...
Press F6...remove the XP CD...insert the driver CD you made and hit Enter...
It will automatically install the SATA drivers and continue...PS...you need to make sure beforehand this machine will run XP and has all the neccessary drivers.patio is correct, many newer systems that shipped with Vista just don't have drivers for XP.Goto Bios Setup then disable the sata mode configuration,,Quote from: Techniquecian on November 11, 2009, 12:49:37 AM

Solve : laptop wont boot?

Answer»

im having this erorr when tryin to boot my laptop, (its RUNNIN xp pro

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\windows\SYSTEM 32\config\system

is there any way to repair it with out havin to reformat it, or use the repair funtion on a xpro disk Have you tried Safe Mode - LAST Known Good Configuration? KB307545? Do you backup your registry using Erunt?

Whatever recovery options you wish to try be aware that data/program losses may occur. Prioritize your option between protecting vital files and RECOVERING the system. Review the status of your backup.

Good luck.it comes up after the hp screen, so i cant get in to safe mode and i dont want to lose any thing on there Boot to your CD and select Recovery Console.

Type the following:

REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM SYSTEM.OLD
COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG

Solve : Computer constantly restarts at Windows loading screen (logo screen)?

Answer»

My PC constantly restarts whenever I turn it on. It runs it's BIOS thingy and proceeds to a windows screen that asks me if i want to run windows in safe mode, last giid config., etc. As soon as I pick an option it STARTS loading windows. after about 6 seconds it restarts and continues to do so for as long as i leave the computer on. I decided to pop in the xp cd and do the recovery console. when it starts it asks what partition i want to fix but it doesn't list my HARDDRIVE. I went to the part of BIOS that tells you what harddrives are detected and my harddrive was listed.

What do I do to fix my computer?Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.Do i need to run that from the desktop because unfrotunately my computer WONT load tht farNo.
Follow the instructions for creating a bootable CD which is the way they should be run...and this can fix my computer or will it just tell me whats wrong with the harddrive? It will let you know if the HDD is the issue...and if it is...does that mean i need a new harddrive or is there a possible way to fix it?OMG, just run it....i ran and its displayed " A:\>" and so i typed the harddrive path thing (C:\) and it sed it was an invalid drive. wat does tht mean? What program did you download?maxtor powermaxDid you download Maxtor PowerMax 4.23 Bootable CD .ISO image file
Did you boot from the CD, you made?yes. but it didnt work so i did some extra stuff with my xp cd and now my computer is working againQuote from: chishio8 on November 13, 2009, 04:47:19 PM

Solve : ? How to disable Windows File Protection ??

I can't seem to get rid of " Windows File Protection " at start up.

Running Xp, Sp3, normal boot.

Followed instructions here on this site.

Link: http://www.technipages.com/enabledisable-windows-file-protection.html

I tried...

2 – disabled at next boot only, no prompt to re-enable

changed 1,2, ffffff9d and REBOOTED...and still appears at start up?..what's going on Welcome to CH.
