Solve : everest report?

Answer»

i did an EVEREST report and it has up date web sites and OTHERS to GO and read about the parts to do with my pc should i go and up date them below is one for the mother board

http://uk.msi.com/I don't understand the question harry. One and only complaint i have about Everest is the generic comment "this driver may be out of date"...in all it's reports.
Most of the time this is false and if the machine is running properly it should be ignored...Oh, I see. Have you guys ever used Belac Advisor? If not, you might want to TRY it.How to Post Everest ReportI've seen the same thing in Belarc as well...I'm not suggesting otherwise. Just that now that I know what the post was about I thought I'd throw in an ad for Belarci have balarc as well

its not saying it/they are out of date , through the complete report it gives web sites about your parts mostly to read and 1/3 to update Quote from: PATIO on November 15, 2009, 03:20:30 PM

Most of the time this is false and if the machine is running properly it should be ignored...
I think this is good advice.I agree....I have run them both and some of the information was a good heads up to update but a lot of it can be ignored. If the machine is running fine that should be good enough.

Solve : laptop usb port?

Answer»

I used to conect to the internet through my usb port wich...I found today broken;can I replace that and how?
thanksIs it physically broken?

Do you have another USB port on that computer?

Laptop or desktop?Quote from: JJ 3000 on November 18, 2009, 10:22:42 PM

Is it physically broken?

Do you have another USB port on that computer?

Laptop or desktop?

Im pretty sure its a laptop

Do you have any other FREE USB ports that you can use? If not, most likely the USB is connected directly to the MOTHERBOARD, not an easy fix. If you do not have any more available USB ports, but physically have other ones to use, get a usb hub and use that so you can get an extra connection. This should be TAKEN to a shop.thank you;yes it is a laptop and it was the only usb port;now,(a women can just do so much ...)it is an OLD computer(but i still can not aford a new one)on which I changed the screen, the hard drive and did it all alone,by reading manuals and getting some help here( ;i was wondering it somebody can tell me if I can buy this usb part(it cam out from the bay yesterday with the medialink internet conector)and is it very hard to change it?

thanks A good shop should charge you 40 to 50 Bucks to replace it and SOLDER it in with a new one...

Solve : Blank screen on bootup?

Answer»

Hi, My son's PC GOT a virus, I formated the PC, Like I have done many times in the PAST, I am not new at reloading the OS. When the PC starts to boot up, so I can reload the OS, the Screen is BLACK, with a slight image of the IBM Thinkpad image. I though it was the LCD screen inverter card, so I replaced it, that was not it. I am thinking that maybe the Contrast just went to the "Dark Side" Is there any way I can fix that? It's unclear from your post whether or not you actually reinstalled the OSI have NOT installed the OS, Nothing comes up on the screen for me to follow the install steps. I can hear it starting to find the CD, and can see a faint image of the IBM-Thinkpad image, then nothingAre you certain you're BOOTING to the cd? Make sure the cd is at the top of the boot order in bios. How am I going to make any updates to the BIOS, if I have a BLACK screen. I can hear the CD ROM spin up when I turn it on. I am thinking I am getting a error message, but cant see anythingHave you considered the backlight? That can blow and give you the RESULTS you are seeing (or not seeing). A bit more involved than the inverter but still doable.
OK, I will check that option out, I will look online, for instructions, the same way I did for the inverter. thanks for your help in letting me know the "next step" i need to take. Joe G

If you already had SP1 installed and the SP1 slipstream DVD didn't work than the slipstream was not done properly...
What app was used on the slipstream DVD ? ?

The program used was Vlite, following this guide:

Solve : Computer Stuck Trying to Start Up?

Answer»

HELP!!!! My computer wont start up. It just goes to the screen where it gives you the choice to start up in safe mode or last good configuration or start up normally. So I have clicked all of them and nothing happens it just ends up back at that screen and says WINDOWS will start up normally in........and starts counting down to starting up and then continues the vicious circle of attempting to startup. Can someone please tell me whats going on?

Running windows xp.

Thanks,
Amy1. Disable Auto Restart. From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter.

HOPEFULLY the machine will stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). RECORD and post back with the "EXACT" error message text and/or numbers plus any OFFENDING software module it might name.

2. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display). What led up to this? What is different between the last time the system started normally and the first time it did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?

Solve : System Restore Points?

Answer»

Hi,

I had a problem after installing CD Creator from a CD I had as it was not compatable with XP Pro so I went into System Restore to go back to before the installation.
To my horror system restore said that there were no previous restore points to go to, period.

I have checked all of the settings and I have not turned off system restore on any drives.

Does anyone know what the problem is? I understood that system restore automatically created system restore points periodically.

As it happens I've sorted the problem I had with CD Creator but I'm very concerned about the lack of restore points.

Help Please,

DaveSystem restore works great for some and not so great for others. I'm a strong advocate of using a disk imaging utility on a regular basis. You will find it a better option and much more RELIABLE than System Restore. If you prefer to just back up your registry, download and use ERUNT - it's free and it's superb (but not a replacement for disc imaging software)Many thanks for the quick reply Alan,
Why does System restore not seem to be working and what disc imaging software do you recommend.

Regards,

DaveI couldn't begin to guess why it isn't working. As I said, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Many users have exactly the same problem.

Regarding imaging software, if you want a retail product then Acronis True Image is the best. If you want a free alternative, here are some: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtmlMany thanks Alan,

Will research further,

Kind Regards.

how well does windows vista's backup (via backup and restore center) work?

System Restore is system restore. It works. Except sometimes it doesn't

Is still a third party software recommended?

Under all circumstances - for all users

Can you manually create a restore point?

Try this:
Click Start then Run and type in sfc /scannow and press enter. This will run the system file checker. Have your windows CD handy - it will ask for it.I have no problem at all manually creating restore points but cannot get it to do so automatically.

DaveCheck the status of the "System Restore Service". On the Windows XP Pro SP3 system I'm posting from, it's set to:
o Status: Started
o Startup Type: Automatic
o Log On As: Local System

To access system services info:
o Select "Start" - start MENU displays
o Right-click "My Computer"- context menu displays
o Select "Manage" - Computer Management windows displays
o Double-click "Services and Applications" category (left window pane) to expand it
o Select "Services" item - All windows services display in right window pane
o Select "Standard" tab bottom right pane to gain more real estate
o SCROLL down right window pane until you find "System Restore Service".
o View it's status - double-click item to open Properties for edit.
Many Thanks for the reply, I had ALREADY checked and the results are the same as you posted but as I said in my post, when I go to recover a restore point there aren't any restore points other than the ones I set manually, the only exception was very recently when I had a problem install a program, a restore point was set by the computer. Does the computer not set restore points periodically? Also I found it strange that when I NEEDED a restore point there wasn't a single one!

Regards,

DaveMake sure the Task Scheduler service is also set to Automtic.

Solve : Microsoft Certification??

Answer»

I've recently graduated college (business major) and I think that I need something to add a little uniqueness to my resume. I'm a pretty quick study when it comes to software, and I've been a user of Microsoft Office for almost a decade, so I figured that it might be good to get Microsoft certified. I'm just really, really confused. I don't know what the best TESTING plan or path is, or where I should go to get study aids.

Could someone explain the most relevant Microsoft certifications for general business individuals to me? I'd hate to take a test and FIND out it either expires or isn't worth anything anymore. Is anyone Microsoft certified? What did you use? Has it helped your career?

Anything WOULD be of great HELP and the sooner the better! Thanks in advance!Microsoft Certification List

If you're a business major, I'd go with one of the Certifications under "HOME and Office User"

Solve : keys are typing in code??

Answer»

I don't know what I hit, but I'm actually typing this from my husband's computer because I can't TYPE anything from my computer now. When I type "t" it comes out t5. Then I hit backspace and it comes out with DASHES. Nothing is what it is supposed to be. I have a Satellite Toshiba laptop and it runs Windows XP. I tried to reboot, but then I ran into another problem. I couldn't type in my password to let me back into Windows. Everytime I type "R" it shows that I typed 2 letters in the password SCREEN. My mom said I might have NUMLOCK on, but as far as I can tell, it isn't on and even when I press function F11 it doesn't seem to do anything. I still have some kind of code enabled. How do I go back to regular typing?Even if someone can tell me what to search, that would be helpful. I can't find any information about this as I don't even know what it is or how I turned this code thing on. If this has been posted before, please forgive me and send me to the link. I'm wondering if you have a regular keyboard (the ones coming with standard desktop computers) and try plugging that into the laptop. See if this works. If it does, you can get back to your own laptop and keep on using it while you are looking for a way to fix your laptop's keyboard. My old thinkpad does this.... or it used to, before it STOPPED booting altogether.

In my case, it was a system board failure. However, it's also almost 15 years old.

If an external keyboard (you'll likely need to use a USB keyboard) works, then it's possible the laptops keyboard is failing/has failed.

I don't know if this is a xp OS setting, or the ati video card settings causes this.

Solve : Suddenly Cant Connect To Web Pages?

Answer»

Hi, I'm on a Windows XP Home Toshiba Satellite laptop, and have been dealing with this problem for a long time now, so I thought I would try my luck here....

I KEEP being unable to connect to web pages just out of the blue, for hours and sometimes all day everything works fine, then nothing, the only way I can connect again is if I reboot my computer, then I can connect again fine, for a few minutes or again all day, it seems random, sometimes I have to reboot 5-10 times a day, thats so frustrating....

I use a Bell Sympatico wireless modem for my laptop, and also for my Windows XP pro desktop computer, the thing is my desktop NEVER has this problem, it always gets on web pages no problem, its just the laptop....

When this happens to my laptop my wireless CONNECTION always reads connected, with great signal connection, so it doesnt appear its a connection problem....Plus if I am running uTorrent at the time that is still uploading / downloading fine, so the connection is there....But Utorrent isnt the problem either, as this happens just as often if uTorrent isnt running at all...

It doesnt matter what browser I am using, IE or Firefox, same thing, and I have called Bell about this and they say its not the modem, it MUST be an issue with the laptop....

I am at a loss as to what the problem is, can anyone help? I'm at the end of my rope....

Are you using a router? If so, next time the problem occurs try resetting the router instead of rebooting the computer and see if that works. If it does, it's the router. If not, well...... I don't know. Not SURE, its just one modem, for the two computers, it runs on ethernet if that helps, but will try that just the same.....
Its a 2WIRE 2701HG-G Modem....OK, I tried resetting the router, didnt help, so had to reboot, any other suggestions? Start from scratch.

A Sympatico High Speed Unplugged Customer Service representative will be more than happy to help if you encounter any DIFFICULTIES. You can reach us at 1 866 875-9591.

Try unplugging the modem for a minute, unplug the router for a minute, reconnect both and reboot.

Solve : Help! Blue screen and Xp not working properly! :(?

Answer»

I got a BAD_POOL_HEADER blue screen so I FOLLOWED some instructions on how to fix it from another forum and this is what is said

Quote:
Thanks for your help. A friend of mine told me he had the same problem and sent me to this page

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];q314060

which had the following steps;

1. START Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

This fixed the problem and I was able to do this from the "safe" mode.

It told me to delete a few things, but I tried to do that but I don't think I deleted it, however my next course of action was to remove a LINKSYS Cisco G adapter

After that my internet didn't work so I restarted it and won't boot past WINDOWS XP loading screen

Then I defaulted the BIOS and tried to go into safe mode, but wouldn't work.

I am hooked up to a DYNEX TV, so I started it VGA mode using the ol' F8 trick. Then it does load the desktop, however my mouse and keyboard will not work so I cannot go into MY COMPUTER properties like everyone says. The desktop isnt frozen because I see the clock ticking in the bottom right hand corner.

Update: I tried PRESSING the F1-12 keys and it seems those are ACTIVE, however I cannot use any other parts of the keyboardI assume you're trying to regain the ability to boot and use the operating system (preferably in both "Normal" and "Safe Mode").

Is this a USB keyboard and a USB mouse?I am using both USB and wireless. The computer is only responding the to logitech keyboard's non a-z, 1-0, windows, ctrl, alt commandsGet a PS2 keyboard to troubleshoot...

Everyone should have one...Quote from: lightslayer on December 07, 2009, 03:14:12 PM

I am using both USB and wireless.

Considering a career in politics? While the above may be a "true" statement, "clear" it is not... I'll leave you to ponder that...

Standard operating procedure (SOP) is to troubleshoot using a PS/2 keyboard. Mouse is optional (as long as your keyboard navigation skills are up to par).

Do the , , and also work?

Does your system require you to enter user_name and PASSWORD to get in?

Solve : Loading XP after Mobo change?

Answer»

I have just got back my original first PC, an EMachines 2210. When I got it home & set it up.. nothing! (it was working fine prior to this) I deduced, and got a 2nd opinion, that the mobo had died. I had an old HP board and installed that. Installed the XP emachines recovery discs, and it seemed to load up ok, but when I tried to boot it just went to 'Start Windows normally/safe mode screen' but nothing else. I understand this is due to the mobo change, and accept that. However, I have a genuine XP disc complete with prod. key, also as I purchased the PC (with rec. discs) and the prod. key still on the label on the back. Can I use the old product key to activate XP after loading from the 'new' disc? If so how? I feel I am doing nothing illegal here as I purchased both items. Thank you. 1. Correct. Follow PATIO's link.
2. I don't understand.
3. You have 2 XP product keys, 1 from the eMachines and 1 you purchased? Are they both XP-Home or is 1 Home and the other Pro?Both the same, I think, as the EMachines one uses Semantic Ghost 7.5? Now, I'm really confused! I know what Ghost is but what does Ghost have to do with Windows? I FIGURED the eMachine was XP-Home, but have no idea what you bought. XP-Home and XP-Professional are not the same and use different PID's.Ok, I'll try to exlain...When I booted from the rec. discs, instead of the usual Win XP set up, the screen shows that install is proceeding but at the top it states 'Symantic Ghost 7.5' and installs XP in 8 minutes with a PROGRESS bar that stops at 50% &asks for the next disc. 2. I have installed a formatted 320 gb IDE Hdd. (Forgot to mention that in the original post Sorry)
1. That's how the Recovery process works. The original installation is saved as a Ghost image on the hidden partition. The Recovery disk is able to access that image for the restore. I use Ghost 7.0 EVERY week, I know all about it.
2. Is the new 320GB replacing the old HDD? If so, use the new XP CD. If you bought it as SP1 and you have a valid PID, you will have to download or Windows Update SP3, but that won't work until you do #3 below.
3. You will need all the drivers for the HP motherboard. Download them now, you will need them, whatever you do.Thanks for that. But I want to use the 'old' Product Key that came with the PC, rather than the one on my XP SP1 disc, as I have this earmarked for another project. Thus, can I load XP from the XP disc I have, but activate it with the 'old' product key?No
Each product key is tied to a type of XP distribution.
Examples:
Retail XP Home
Retail XP Pro
Dell OEM XP Home
Dell OEM XP
HP OEM XP Home
HP OEM XP Pro
Enterprise XP Pro for for Taco Bell
Vioume License XP for City of San Mateo
And so on.
The CDs are almost identical. It is the same system. But a very small difference makes it impossible to use a product key of one to be used in another distribution.
Why? Ask Microsoft.

Solve : warm regards sir,?

Answer»

sir, I mistakenly plug a system without memory inside so the system began to produced an heavy burnt smoke; I dissembled the system but I could not easily locate where the burnt smoke emanate from. I want you to HELP me out on the conditions of my system board, processor and others. Lack of RAM modules can't produce any smoke.
You better GET the computer to a computer SHOP for a check. If you have found no sign of burned components on the motherboard or other exposed interior parts I would suspect that an internal component of the power supply unit has failed. The resulting smoke would be quickly blown out of the machine by the power supply’s fan, as you describe, and leave no visible evidence unless the power supply is opened and examined.

It is not uncommon for a power supply to fail and it is easy to replace. There are different types of power supplies. If you attempt to replace it yourself, make sure that the NEW one is the CORRECT type for your machine.

Solve : Tool tips go behind task bar!?

Answer»

I haven't searched on this I admit - but anyone had same?

Usually occurs at some point after being well advanced after a reboot - and tooltips are all but obscured because behind the task bar. Not major deal - just irritating!Try this: http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=101. Official Microsoft advice: either log off & on again or else restart PC

2. UNOFFICIAL: go to Start/All Programs: Hover over any program listed, right click and select Sort by Name. Repeat once more. If tooltips still hidden, repeat.
It's an old, known issue. A reboot is usually the best and most reliable "fix".Thx Broni - I may try that tho as said - it is just an irritation.

Now it has been mentioned I remember it is a long standing win bug.

I tried the start-programs approach but to no avail ...... so I think it'll be the old reboot deal, as always!

Thx all.Uncheck the "keep taskbar on top of other windows". Click apply. check it. Apply again.

Worked for me.

the Cause is quite simple; when the taskbar is set to always on top, it is set as a "always on top" window. tooltips do the same; usually their zorder remains correct, but sometimes (for example, after a long run-time) somehow the zorder of the taskbar and it's tooltips get out of sync, and the tooltips appear behind the taskbar.

Rather then do it this way, however, I figure it might be possible to "automate" it. It's simply removing and setting the topmost attribute- so I whipped this up; a s mall VB6 program that uses some basic window management API to remove and set the topmost attribute, which should hopefully fix the issue.

Code: [Select]Option Explicit

Private Declare Function FindWindow Lib "user32.dll" Alias "FindWindowA" _
(ByVal lpClassName As String, ByVal lpWindowName As String) As Long

Private Declare Function SetWindowPos Lib "user32.dll" (ByVal hwnd As Long, ByVal hWndInsertAfter As Long, ByVal x As _
Long, ByVal y As Long, ByVal cx As Long, ByVal cy As Long, ByVal wFlags As Long) As Long
Private Const HWND_TOPMOST As Long = -1
Private Const HWND_NOTOPMOST As Long = -2
Private Const SWP_SHOWWINDOW As Long = &H40
Private Const SWP_NOZORDER As Long = &H4

Sub Main()
Dim Shellwindow As Long
Dim taskb As Long

taskb = FindWindow("Shell_Traywnd", vbNullString)

If taskb <> 0 Then

SetWindowPos taskb, HWND_NOTOPMOST, 0, 0, 0, 0, SWP_SHOWWINDOW

SetWindowPos taskb, HWND_TOPMOST, 0, 0, 0, 0, SWP_SHOWWINDOW

Else
MsgBox "FindWindow of Shell_Traywnd failed."

End If

End Sub

I cannot test it though since Vista appears immune to this particular issue (no doubt because of the new DWM architecture); let me know if it works, as with the Taskbar settings option toggle.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]BC - many thx.

Well - I tried the 'taskbar' on top, cancel and reapply - but after reapply it was BACK to old tricks. As I rarely run full screen - usually everything cascaded both screens, I don't need it to take priority and so for now have left it canceled for focus and the tooltips show fine of course!

The code routine .... thx for that but a question - how should that be run? - assuming it'll run safely too. Save as 'filename.exe'? Or does it in fact behave as an executable or some other way?.

many thx again.Trust me, it won't matter. This is just an old bug that pops up now and then and the only definitive "fix" is a reboot. Its the code I indicated; I don't know any scripts that can call API's directly.

It's a ZIP file with an EXE inside; liek I say, I have no clue if it'll work or not, since I am using Vista now and no longer have that problem.

For the dialog; there is no invokation of "cancel":

Trust me, it won't matter. This is just an old bug that pops up now and then and the only definitive "fix" is a reboot.

You say that like there is a such thing as a bug without an explanation. there isn't. This is simply a case of window zorder not being ideal for the tooltip. I explained this quite thoroughly.

The important point here is using the SWP_NOZORDER flag, which means that the SetWindowPos() calls will cause changes to the zorder stack, which is exactly what we are trying to achieve. Since getting the window handle of the tooltip object used by the taskbar is likely convoluted and messy, we need to deal with the other window, the taskbar itself.

The architecture for window management in XP and below is really quite simple; basically, they are in a "stack" which is quite easy to imagine. the windows are drawn from the farthest back to the closest, however, only those regions that are visible will be drawn at all. For example, when a window is maximized, the desktop is not drawn at all. Windows Only allows for repainting within "invalidated" regions of a window; before calling the window procedure with the WM_PAINT message it basically "locks out" painting outside the invalidated area, usually the area of the window revealed by moving a window that is on top of it. This behaviour can be seen in that when you move a window over top of another program's window that is not responding, you see the "trail" of windows on top of it. This is because the application is busy and no longer servicing it's message queue, and therefore WM_PAINT messages go unfulfilled.

In this particular instance; the ordering of the tooltip and the taskbar are incorrect; specifically, this occurs when always on top is checked; due to what I would conjecture are race conditions within the various window management APIs and explorer's hooking of said window functions for the purposes of displaying and updating buttons on the taskbar. The "fix" is simply to fix this zorder.

Since the desired ORDER is to have the tooltip topmost, the ideal solution would be to somehow get the hwnd the tooltip is using and use the API to set that Topmost. However, it turns out, that each taskbar button and item on the taskbar is given it's very own tooltip class.

Since there are multiple tooltip instances and each one is showing beneath the taskbar, it is thus easy to deduce that the zorder issue is caused by the taskbar window itself and an incorrect zordering.

An alternative code solution would be to use EnumWindows() and loop through all windows, setting any with the class name Tooltips_Class32 as topmost windows. This would guarantee that all tooltips appear on top of ALL windows WHATSOEVER. But given the negligible value of tool it seems like more of an academic pursuit that does not catch my immediate fancy. Besides, Log-off Log-on is all that is necessary. (because the windows are destroyed and recreated)

BC - great explanation.

As you correctly identify - in most ways it is not a biggie this problem. Just a ''nuisance'' which is a tad irritating. Thx for all your input.

Solve : Help my computer shuts off on it's own!!!?

Answer» HELLO everyone!!
I was hoping someone could help me. This is really strange and I am at my wits end. So here is my history with my problem. It all started with a dang virus my computer got a month ago. I was able to clean the virus but it left me with a more serious problem. My computer will shut off many times when attempting to boot. It typically takes 10 times before I can get to my desktop and even then it turns off!! headscratch.gif My computer even shuts off when idling. Also besides booting issues, I am unable to boot safe mode because of a "BSOD" code that was unable to be resolved; 0X0000007B (0XF789E528, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)
So I got so frustrated I just reformatted my hardrive and reintalled windows xp. And still this dumb computer turns off. I have tried in the Recovery Console command prompt, chkdsk /r and it seems to repair my problem for about an hour...weird I know. So the more I read it seems to be a power or over heating issue right?? So I took apart my computer cleaned all the dust around the fans and inside my pcu and CHECKED if all the fans were working and they are. Then I went into Bios and kept it idling for a while and it doesn't turn off which tells me its not a power issue. So what GIVES?? Can someone help me pleaseYou may have more issues than you suspect...

ok but i deleted the partition and reformated the hard drive and reinstalled windows....if i did all that why would that error still be an issue?
and if it IS the issue how can i go about and fix it?Do the install over again.
Choose one or both.
Or ignore is somebody has a better idea.

Suggestion 1)
With the standard XP install CD there is a area where you delete and add partitions.
Delete the first partition. Create a very small partition. Create a larger partition for the system. Next delete the small partition.
The object is to skip over about 200 MB of the disk on the hunch that the first part of the disk has a n esoteric error.
You may be able to use the rest of the HDD with no problem.

Suggestion 2)
Car fully clean the CD with a soft clean cloth. Do not SCRATCH it. Also, run a lens cleaner in the CD Drive. Maybe the install failed because of a read error from the CD.

humm....very interesting about the first suggestion I'm gonna try that thanks! I will let you know shortly!

Solve : outlook express 6: problems?

Answer»

I wondered why the spell checker stopped on every word and found that it is using a French dictionary. No idea why and no alternative option.

My IMAP aol account recently started deleting all read mail over a month old and I can't find a setting to revert to "never" as it apparently used to beI'm probably not the best one to answer your question, but since no one else has replied. I haven't been on OE for several years and haven't been on AOL in a long, long time.

OE doesn't have a spell checker built into it. It uses the spell checker in Word. If you don't have Word there is no spell checker unless you use an add on something like this.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.html

I have no idea why OE would be trying to use a French spell checker unless your Word spell checker is set to French.

OE also stores all emails locally ( on your hard drive) so there is no reason AOL would want to delete emails.

My feeling is that you are using some version of AOL mail that just looks like OE.

OE users who have Office 2003 or older version installed have spell check in OE as a result of having Office installed. IF you have Office 2007, get the spell checker rthompson80819 mentioned. For more info, see http://blogs.msdn.com/dgoldman/archive/2007/01/03/how-to-fix-the-outlook-express-spelling-checker-when-the-french-dictionary-is-the-only-dictionary.aspxI have Word 6, and I have Access 2007. There is no PROBLEM with spell checks in EITHER of them so they don't use the French dictionary.

I used to have AOL dialup and their email. When I left them, they GAVE directions on how to continue to use the same mail address in Outlook as IMAP.

My non-IMAPPED mail doesn't have this automatic deleting problem and the AOL didn't use to for years, until earlier this year, when I first noticed that its folders were nearly empty. Now I see that it regularly deletes mail beyone about a month old.

I have Word 6, and I have Access 2007.
Hmm, you have Word 6.0, which dates back to 1993, and you have Access from the latest version of Office. That's quite a combination.

Quote from: robirdman on December 05, 2009, 06:08:00 PM
I have Word 6, and I have Access 2007. There is no problem with spell checks in either of them so they don't use the French dictionary.
OK, but what spell check in OE? That's the issue here, not spell check in Word or Access. Did you read the reference I posted in my previous reply?

Regarding your problem with AOL email, I have no idea. I think I'd switch to a gmail (Google Mail) account; gmail supports IMAP. Why did I refer to the spell checkers in Word and Access?
I first said that OE was using a French dictionary and I didn't know why.

The first reply said that OE uses the Word dictionary, and the second said it was the Office dictionary. I don't have Office (which includes Access), but stand-alone Access, and neither Word nor Access is using a French dictionary.

Therefore the original question of why OE is using a French dictionary remains a mystery.

Regarding the second problem, it has been suggested to change from OE as a solution but OE has been fine for my non-IMAP mail and I don't want to complicate things with a second service. I would not longer be able to drag and drop mail from AOL IMAP folders into the non-IMAP folders.

Perhaps someone familiar with the program may have solutions but it is looking pretty unlikely now.

In the link I posted, this issue with Office 2007 and OE is explained and a solution was given there. Whether you detect a dictionary or not in Access 2007, I suspect the Office 2007/OE SCENARIO still applies, which means that even though an English version of Office 2007 is installed, OE appears to be using a French dictionary.

Word 6.0 is so old that I doubt that having it installed provides a dictionary to OE. I'm surprised it even works with Windows XP.

The solution given in the aforementioned link, which is the same suggested by rthompson80819 in this discussion thread:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.html . So, there's no need to belabor this issue; you have a solution.I did not read carefully enough when I saw the post saying that OE used the Word or Office directory, since these programs didn't have the problem.

Rereading and following the link, I was then surprised to find out how COMMON this French dictionary thing is, since it seemed so strange.

The download solved the problem, while seemingly not modifying the other programs dictionaries which had custom words.

Thanks very much for the help on this problem.

Solve : Sending email using Microsoft Outlook?

Answer»

I have a problem setting up my laptop to send and receive mail and while traveling using other WiFi networks. I use Netzero as my email "home" and Internet service is via DSL from a local PROVIDER. While traveling I use any WiFi connection that is available. All networks that I have used while away from home ALLOW me to use the Netzero server for both incoming and outgoing email transmissions. At home I receive incoming Email from/through the Netzero server. For sending out Email (while at home) I have to use the SMTP address of my Internet provider. So to travel I either have to use a different computer or reset the SMTP "path" for outgoing email through Netzero.
My question: Is their a way to setup two different "paths" for out going email on the same computer? One other possibility, could I use Microsoft Outlook for the "home location" and Outlook Express while traveling. Otherwise I have to use one computer for home service and another computer for traveling.
Any solutions to this problem would be appreciated. My OS is Windows XP and email software is Outlook 2003.You can set up a second account in Outlook with a different email address and Netzero for outgoing. Then you can either check incoming email for both addresses or simply alias the second address to the first so all incoming email for either address goes to your primary.Quote

I use Netzero as my email "home" and Internet service is via DSL from a local provider.
Why do this? Why use Netzero when you have DSL. Why don't you just use your DSL ISP for your email address? Another email address is not an option as the Netzero address is an ID that is used for several entities that I don't won't to change. I'm just looking for a technical answer for my ORIGINAL question and it sounds like there might not be an easy way to solve the problem. Thanks to anyone that has any IDEAS.

Solve : How can I get rid of visible page breaks??

I am writing a book and cannot get rid of the visible page breaks at the bottom of most pages. I have tried numerous possibilities (MS, Google), but they persist. I hoped that they won't show when I reformat to PDF, but fat chance ...

Are you saying that the page break is actually showing up on the PDF?

If so are you sure that it is a page break that you are seeing? And, what about Print Preview? Do they appear there?Quote from: mroilfield on November 19, 2009, 08:09:56 AM
Are you saying that the page break is actually showing up on the PDF?

Well, I know on which page they are in Words. In PDF they appear on the same pages as fine grey line. Therefore I assume they are page breaks.
I believe, rightly or wrongly, that they come about when I WRITE in Words and hit ENTER to move to the following page, rather than let the page break decide when to move. But sometimes, in order to not have just a few words on the follwing page (orphans and widows), I need to do so. How can I repair it?Quote from: soybean on November 19, 2009, 12:29:08 PM

YES they do, I am sorry to say. I have just explained my thoughts to mroilfield in my previous message. Do they make sense to you?Have you tried to click on Page Layout and then Breaks? Then click on page....Mark the point at which the page ends?

If that doesn't work look at the Next page button. Insert a section break and start a new page.

Thanks Spoiler, just tried yor suggestion. But it sets breakpoints rather than making them disappear. My problem is not with the breakpoints per se, but with them being visible. This cannot be right, can it?

Solve : Computer won't boot!?

Answer»

I was using my computer fine last night and everything was going as normal.

I was using this program CALLED winhiip and it was copying an iso to another hard drive that I plugged in. I had to unplug the wires from the cd drive to plug them into the hard drive. I have done this many times before and I have had no problems.

Last night an iso was copying and I was was tired of waiting so I just UNPLUGGED the hard drive when it was on then I turned the computer off. I tried to start it up this morning. I get the windows XP screen, but then it goes to a black screen. All it has is a blinking WHITE underscore (ex. _) Almost like a command prompt. I've tried pressing f8 because people tell me that puts it in safe mode but all that does is makes it beep at me. Every time I press a KEY it beeps.

Could someone please tell me how to fix this. I can work on the inside of it if you walk me though it please be very detailed with your posts so I can fix it.

Boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option - that will take you to the Recovery Console. Once there run chkdsk /r. Let it finish and then reboot. Did that help? If not, we'll try something else.okay I'll try that when I get home from work. Thanks I'll post when I try it. But everyone else please post more suggestions because if that doesn't work then I'll have a plan B or C and so on.I can't find my XP cd anywhere and I KNOW I own one.....If u find ur Win XP installation CD, u can also try to repair your installation. Only issue is that some programs might tell that they aren't registered (i had that with AVG and Alcohol 120, others worked fine).

when u start the installation, press enter to set up windows and accept the license terms. afterwards, the setup will search for previous versions of windows (your XP should be enlisted). when it shows it to you, just press "r" and the repair process will start. looks same like the normal windows installation, but u won't lose any files. hope this helps. If you can't find your xp cd you can download a recovery console .iso from the link below, burn it to cd, boot to it, and then run chkdsk /r http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212

Solve : I think i blew it up!?

Answer» FIRST off, please forgive the length of this and my ignorance but i'll do my best! I have a HP Pavillion 963 with windows xp sp2. The disc drive wasn't working (it wouldn't pop out) but everything else was perfectly fine (i had the computer turned on and was using it)when i THOUGHT about seeing if i COULD take the whole cd thing out, so i popped off the side cover and all of a sudden it went black, then started to reboot. A screen came up that said an ERROR had occured, start in safe mode, start normally, etc. I tried start normally but it looped back to the same page (after flashing the hp logo) so i tried safe mode, same result, tried last known good configuration, same result. So then after trying again, i started pressing f10 several times, then f9 several times, and something came up on the bottom of the screen about starting hp recovery system, and the little bar moved across the screen till it was a white bar, then i noticed it was trying to read the cd drive. So i shut it off, unplugged the cd drive, turned it on and started the system recovery thing again. Soooo now its showing the white bar, but nothing else is happening. Normally whenever its doing something, an orange light comes on, but its not right now. I don't think i even hear it doing anything either. So, any ideas what to do? If its blown up then i have to PUT in a new cd drive so that i can put the xp cd in, right? Also, how long should i just leave it right now? Thanks in advance for any help!

[Saving SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]The screenshot you have attached is what CPU-Z says is your mainboard chipset and your BIOS type. It contains no driver details such as VERSION number, etc, from which we could establish how old the driver is. You also POSTED a link to a driver uploaded in 2007. It may be no newer than the driver you already have installed. It is not even on the maker's website. I should say that if your PC is working OK, don't bother. In general, monkeying around with DRIVERS just for the sake of it is a bad idea.

Solve : Change disk type?

Answer»

I have a program that will only run from a removable disk.
I need it to run from a folder on the hard drive.

I can create a subst drive [dos], but it appears as local. Is it possible to change the type it displays to removable, so my app will run from it?

Thanks,

WilliamYou ever try a USB drive?

What program is this?

Its a medical image viewer. It is designed to present x-ray [etc] IMAGES from a CD, but I am encrypting these images on the CD, and unencrypting them to a hard drive folder. Unfortunately, once they are there, the viewer won't work.

It will from a usb drive, but the recipients of the CDs may not be allowed removable media on their PCs, or have one available - it's just too complicated.

So I want to try to fool the viewer into running off the folder into which the images have been decrypted.

Most will run from a dos-subst to make the folder look like a root drive, but this particular one obviously checks the drive type, rather than the root/folder structure.

Regards,

WilliamQuote

I have a program that will only run from a removable disk.
I need it to run from a folder on the hard drive.
May I ask why you need this?
Is this on a large scale? In a single building or campus?
Is the a privacy or copyright issue in this?
There is a work around.
But our concern is why the program vendor does not let you use it in the way that bet suits your needs. The situation is this:

Radiology images stored on PACS [picture archiving and communications system] need to be transfered to somewhere else for a doctor to review - perhaps images taken while patient on holiday etc.

PACS vendors provide the facility to burn the images onto a CD, along with a viewer to allow the recipient doctor to look at the images on his office PC [for full diagnostic purposes, the images will be imported from the CD to the PACS at the receiving hospital].

Due to some spectacular data losses in UK, we now have to encrypt all the CDs USED for this.

None of the PACS vendors currently supplying the NHS in UK have a facility to burn an encrypted CD directly from the PACS workstation, so I have written some scripts that take the files destined for the CD [including the viewer], encrypt them, and add a menu program to the CD that runs the decryption [using 7-zip]. The decrypted files are PLACED in a folder on the hard drive of the recipient, and the whole folder is deleted [including the images AND the viewer] when the viewer is closed or the menu shut down.

Most of the viewers will run from the folder, though one needs to be in the root of a drive, so can use DOS Sust command to do this.

The one I'm currently working on will only run from a removable drive. Whilst I appreciate that the vendor doesn't want his viewer stolen and used for other purposes, in the scenario above it is only being used to view the images from the CD [as the vendor intends] anf the hard drive copy is deleted when viewing is complete - so I feel I'm keeping within the spirit of the original usage intentions.

I have considered a VIRTUAL drive, but can't find one that doesn't need software to be installed on the recipients' PCs - which is too intrusive, and at many hospitals is BLOCKED by security policies [quite rightly].

Truecrypt can produce a virtual drive effect, but its use is not practical - mainly because there is no provision to craete a truecrypt vault from the command line, and also because it is incredibly slow, and users will abandon the attempt.

I hope this explanation allays your concerns, and if you can suggest any way round my problem, I'd be grateful [as would the administrators who have to breach rules and send CDs unencrypted, and any patients whose CDs might go astray!

William

Solve : Windows XP won't start up.?

Answer»

I've TRIED it in Safe MODE as well and it keeps going back to a blue screen that says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation and backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK/ F to check for Hard drive corruption then restart.

Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8735E8B0, ect....)

I'm running Windows XP and the computer is a Dell with Pentium 4. I'm a computer dummy and have no idea what I'm doing. How am I supposed to even uninstall the antivirus if I can't get into windows?? Any help would be much appreciated.
Start/Run then type in cmd and hit Enter...
This will bring up a black box Dos looking window...
Type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...
NOTE: the space between...chkdsk and /

Let it run to completion and re-boot.

NOTE # 2...this may take some time depending on your hard drive size...do NOT interrupt it...let it finish.

Post back with the results.

PS. Welcome Aboard ! !Hey Jason1978!

Haha I've been trying to get my reply posted but I keep on going back therefore erase my responds conpletely.

But like what Patio said, run chkdsk /r. but you may want to boot your computer in safe mode if you can manage to so... run it in safe mode command prompt type the fallowing chkdsk /p /r this will allow the hard drive to completely fix any errors if there is any... normally that will fix the problem.

In case if this doesn't let me know and I'll give you a few more alternative options.

hope this helps!
ScmysterI'm confused already. I'm really dumb when it comes to this. I can't start it in safe mode. It shows windows xp trying to start up but then just keep going back to blue screen. How do I get it so I can enter the commands, "Start/Run then type in cmd and hit Enter...
This will bring up a black box Dos looking window...
Type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...
NOTE: the space between...chkdsk and /
" ?? Only place I can go is Setup/Boot Options. Ok sounds like your problem is far more severe then I suspected.

ha ha no need to worry, if you can help your self by being relentless you'll solve this problem...
The problem seems to be the drivers to your NTFS.SYS and its related to writing and reading process your out of luck to get that baby started, your other option is to get an external hard drive if you have one available... if not get one that is just as large or larger than your computer hard drive aka internal hard driver.

You'll need a Reinstallation CD for your Windows XP OS.

Let me know when you have all of these then I'll give you the next step.

P.S. if you don't care about loosing your files don't get an external Hard Drive.

ScmysterSo it will not boot into Windows at all ? ?It starts BOOTING windows, but then just goes back to that blue screen. I try booting it in Safe mode with command prompt and it just goes through the process all over again.
Yeah your computer seems to be competely corrupted and you'll have to Install a windows repair from the Win XP CD (this wont be the only step there will be a few other ones.) and this will grant you access to your files and back them up.

Alternatively I'm sure there is a way to resolve this problem by booting into DOS and fixing it manually, but honestly it isn't worth it... it will take so much time and cause HEAD ach that it wont even be funny!

and to have a tech repair it will be to expensive matter of fact they may end up doing the same thing I will end up telling you ha ha

Solve : utp cable connected, but windows does not recognize it?

Answer»

I've connected the network CABLE to my PC (I've tried both ethernet controllers), but WINDOWS (first Windows 7, now XP) keeps telling me the network cable is unplugged. The router detects the cable without issues. I've tried RESTARTING the PC, resetting the router, but nothing WORKS. More information. If you have more than 1 and are only using 1 you will see this message...perfectly normal.never mind, the UTP cable was WRONG. all working fine now

Solve : No Associated Program??

Answer»

I know this doesn't help you, but McAfee is the absolute WORST software you can find (and I'm not big on product bashing, but this is the EXCEPTION). You really should replace it with a better product. For now, I'd download KASPERSKY Anti-Virus (in my opinion it's the best) and use the 30 day free trial option (you'll need to uninstall McAfee first). Scan your system with it and see if it picks up anything. If not, you can do a repair INSTALLATION of XP (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option) which will essentially install XP on top of itself, replacing all modified and missing system files with the original versions. It will not effect any installed apps or system settings. If none of these things work - well, I think you can guess..........

LOL I agree cause if I was protected in the first place I wouldn't be here.
Again Thank you and I will keep u posted on my Nitemare, I must go insearch of this magic CD that my husband has no clue on it's whereabouts. Other then that I am calling it a day with my computer until tomorrow.Best of Luck to you and keep us posted...I fixed it with a program i had to pay for which doesnt work anymore but I no longer have the problem I had before....thanks for all the advice and help along this journey, I'm buying a new PC because this one needs major work. I will post the stepsI took to fix later

Solve : missing sound card??

Answer»

I mistakenly ERASED, I think, the sound/AUDIO software for a 5-year old e-machin USING Windows XP Home edition. The card has not been modified since purchase. I have checked in Control Panel, "Sounds and Audio Devices" and opened the "Volume" property box which states "no audio device".

Any help is much APPRECIATED as my wife is not happy. How do you delete "audio software"? Go to the website of the manufacturer of your sound card and download and install the latest driver for your particular card.

Solve : unwanted addverts jumping in despite blockers?

Hi everybody,It's been sometime since I last posted anything on here but that doesn't MEAN I don't visit. The last time a very learned person by the name of Allan sorted out a slow shut down on my P.C. ( Thanks again for that Allan ).
Anyway I find myself here having to ask for some advice again from some more of you learned folks.
When I'm online even with the browser closed (but it's WORSE with it on) I get a continuous bombardment of adverts and it's a drag having to keep closing them all the time.Despite having all the BLOCKERS on in the anti virus program and all that stuff in defender e.t.c. they just keep coming.
Does anyone have any ideas on how this could have happened and more so how to put an end to it.
Any help would be most appreciated

Solve : I need help PLEASE?

Answer»

Hi. I am not really sure what my problem is. I keep getting this ERROR: http://s245.photobucket.com/albums/gg70/luvmy734/computer%20problem/?action=view&current=PCproblems.jpg ... this happens everytime I try to go to a different website, or even if I'm on facebook and try to go to a new application and it happens everytime. I know it's not an Internet Explorer problem because I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and it happens with Firefox too.

The THING I don't understand about this is I get this error and then when I click on OK or the Red X it brings up a new page to yahoo which is my homepage ..... and I have to keep exiting of them and even though I get the error it always opens the page I want. I HOPE I have explained this well enough for someone to understand. I really appreciate any help or suggestions that anyone can give me.What is the error message please (I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't click on links)? The error message says : Cannot find
Then in this space there is a whole bunch of symbols, NUMBERS and letters (nothing that makes any sense)
Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.1) What is different between the last time things worked properly and the first time they did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) May I assume you use a good AV with current definitions? If so, have you scanned your system with it? If not, do so.

3) Have you scanned your system with MalwareBytes? If not, do so.Here is a pic of the problem

I have AVG and also did a scan at Trend Micro, and I have spyware doctor.

The computer is an older borrowed from my niece, when I was trying to set up AGV it wouldn't allow it because Nortons antivirus was on the computer so I called her and she told me to just go to add / remove and get rid of Nortons so that I could install AGV. I don't know if there was something in the virus vault of Nortons that shouldn't have been deleted. I tried doing a systems restore after I deleted Nortons , but it didn't work. I went back into systems restore and tried to go back farther but it won't let me ... I don't know if its because the computer has not been used for at least 6 months.I'm not sure why you switched from Norton AV to AVG, but that's not a big deal. But I'm really not sure why you tried USING system restore. But okay, that's already done.

I'm also not sure I completely understand the problem. You get that message whenever you try to navigate to a new url, is that right? And eventually you CAN get to the url - is that also right? If not, please correct me. So you ARE online, but navigating from one site to another brings up that error - no matter what browser you use - yes?my problem has been solved ... I think it was a bad add-on ? I was on earlier and it did it ever time I tried to go to a new url.

I went to facebook and went to some of my games and it wasn't doing it any more.

The only thing that is different from this morning when it was doing all the time ... is that my granddaughter wanted to play on PBS Kids and I had to install an add-on for her to play and now I am not getting the error

Now the funny part is that my sister walked me through checking the add-ons last night and we couldn't find any problem. GRRR computers.

To answer your questions about switching AV's Nortons was expired and I have the Free version of AVG ... and I thought that if I did a systems restore it would put back what ever it messed up when I deleted nortons

Man I hope this makes sense.

Any how Thanks so much for trying to help meI think although the issue may have gone away for now that you are still infected...

Forensic investigator? not knowledgeable enough for that. Something to hide? unfortunately not. No ulterior motive, just want to know. Thanks for the link.

Very close Patio.

Solve : Can't start computer?

Answer»

Ok I was trying to Partition my C drive in to 2 Partition so I have C and D drive, there is nothing wrong whit the program I use (I think). But I did a huge mistake... I run the program from a USB (Programs name is Paragon Partition MANAGER) and it required a restart to make the new partition so I pressed restart and...

well I can't start the computer whit a USB in it I will just get a NTLDR error, so I removed it and now I get a blue screen error every time I try to start the computer, the blue screen come right after the windows loading screen and it show in just like 0.5 sec but the text is on 2 lines, it start like "STOP error 001000010000# something like that... I get the same error when ttrying to GO into safe mode

I have attempted to do a chkdsk /r in recovery tool when booting whit the XP disk, but it can't find the autochk.exe, tho it is in the USB but it can't just find it... and it ask me to direct to it.

Anyone know what to do?You have PROBABLY managed to hose your XP install in the process which is why it will not BOOT...

Have you partitioned drives before ? ?

What options did you select in the process ? ?

At this point we have no idea what has transpired...Quote from: patio on December 05, 2009, 03:50:44 PM

Yes, I did it on my main computer for 5 years ago, but I don't know what program I use.

well you could choose 3 different options when making a new partition, but that is only for how much space you want. I did C: 40gig and F: 185 gig.

And in the recovery tool can you see where the USB is placed? I could do randomly F:\autochk.exe, D:\autochk.exe but I think that wont REALLY work so well...Kudos to my self for finding a solution.

I would say how I did it but I got a huge headache so maybe later if people insist.

Solve : dual booting -> boot.ini?

Answer»

I recently moved back home from school, and am sharing a room with my brother. We have SEPARATE computers but only one desk. Since mine has superior hardware, I put his hard drive into my machine. I am trying to modify my boot.ini so we can easily switch between operating systems, and have run into a wall. Here is what i have.

Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="truth" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="justice" /fastdetect /usepmtimer

When I restart and try to boot from the second disk, it wont boot. Here's a look at my disk management.

The drive can be read from my system and i can navigate to the WINDOWS folder, but alas, it will not work. What have I done wrong?Download the Recovery Console ISO fromhere. Burn it to disk with an ISO burner software.

Use the bootcfg /rebuild command. It will detect all Windows XP installations (assuming that your brother's OS is XP, and rebuild the boot.ini file..

If your brother is using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you cannot use the boot.ini file for dual booting. You'll have to use the bcd file in Vista or Windows 7. EasyBCD will simplify the task for you, if this is the case..

edit: make sure the boot.ini file or BCD file you edit, is on the drive that you INTEND to boot from.... I mean the drive that is set as priority in cmos1. Hard Drive Interface:
a. What type of hard drive interface, PATA (IDE/EIDE) or SATA?
b. If IDE, what connector (primary or secondary) and what role (master/slave) or position on cable (middle or end connector) for each hard drive?
c. If SATA, which SATA ports do each connect and how are they numbered (from "zero" to whatever or "one" to whatever)?

2. Operating System(s). What operating system (and service pack) is installed on each drive. The Windows XP operating system (and I assume newer) is designed to work on the system it is installed to. It does not transfer well to different hardware.

You may have to do a "repair" install or a "new" install for the current hardware the second operating system will now run on.You could also try changing:
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="justice" /fastdetect /usepmtimer

to:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="justice" /fastdetect /usepmtimer

if it's on the same cable as the first hard drive.

Or better YET, add it as a third line under "[operating systems]" (in case I'm wrong). You can have multiple invocation lines for each operating system. This allows you to experiment with different boot options.I understand that you took a working HDD with OS out of one computer and want to boot it as the second drive in another computer.
Your hardware is not the same as his.
Even if you had the same OS, the difference in hardware could prevent booting. Just the difference in the Video card is enough to stop it from working.
First, thank you all for your responses.

The interface is SATA, ports numbered 1 to 3. My HDD is in SATA1 and his is in SATA2.

We both have ASUS mobos and nvidia graphics cards.

When I unplug my HDD and put his into SATA1, after adjustments in the BIOS, his system boots up just fine. This is why i think it must be some error in the .ini file, and not a hardware problem.

Should I just experiment with boot options? There has to be only one correct config to get this working, and it doesnt seem like it should be that complicated. What is the rdisk option?

Thanks againQuote from: geehoff on December 05, 2009, 06:41:14 PM

Should I just experiment with boot options? There has to be only one correct config to get this working, and it doesnt seem like it should be that complicated. What is the rdisk option?

1. Yes, experiment (In for a penny, in for a pound). Append the following lines to the end of your boot.ini after the two existing operating system invocation lines:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_1" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_2" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(3)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_3" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(4)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_4" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(5)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_5" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(6)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_6" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(7)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_7" /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(8)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_8" /fastdetect /usepmtimer

I'm hoping the first one succeeds, but try them all if necessary.

The "rdisk(n)" parameter DESIGNATES the drive number to boot. I'm not sure what the enumeration order is or if it changes with the designation of the boot device in BIOS.

I believe your "disk(n)" parameter should be set to "disk(0)" for EIDE/IDE or SATA drives (hopefully someone will correct me if wrong).

2. Which hard drive contains the "boot.ini" you're working on?

3. Which operating systems: Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?I should have mentioned. Both systems are running XP Pro. My HDD, SATA1 has the boot.ini file.Quote from: dahlarbear on December 05, 2009, 09:44:49 PM
I'm hoping the first one succeeds, but try them all if necessary.

It worked! Thank you so much! This is wonderful.1. Which one? This invocation:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="rdisk_1" /fastdetect /usepmtimer

2. Since you've dealt with the "boot.ini" file, you should consider further customizations to it. Specifically you should consider:
o Installing Recovery Console from Windows XP CD
o Setting up one or two "Safe Mode" or debug invocations of operating system

Solve : Presario_rp computer boot trouble??

Answer»

hello every one,
Im having trouble with booting Recovery Partition on a compaq computer.
Does anyone know how I can boot the Recovery Partition from the boot.ini or OS.

The reason Im askin is because I cant start it from BIOS POST by pressing f10.
For those who have an idea what the problem can be that will be awesome if you can help me out and any tips or trick will be helpfull as well.

Thanksanybody have any questions about this issue?

The issue that leads to my problem I'm having is a hal.dll problem aka missing or corrupt. When I try to boot Windows (ROOT / Partision 1).

This problem accures!

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Well I've tried to fix this problem by Using Windows XP CD to boot Recovery Console and

expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll

Also I have tried chkdsk /p /r no such luck to repare or fix this problem.

As to what I thought would be an easy fix is becoming a pain... anyone have any ideas or questions please ask.

Thanks,
ScmysterOn Compaq's it's either F10 or F11 at boot time...tap repeatedly before you see the Compaq splash screen...

NOTE: You do realise that running this will wipe out ALL your data and apps and take the machine back to Day One status...correct ? ?HelloYes I'm quite aware of loosing data which i can properly access right now back up by booting linux on a CD or booting off a separate install of windows on the same partition named WinXP fallowed intructions by Sovereign (http://forums.legitreviews.com/about6705.html)

The instructions fallowed.

Now, follow these steps.
1. Boot from the CD and start the installer
2. Choose to install onto the already formatted partition with the unbootable Windows, but opt to leave the existing filesystem and any other OSes ALONE. Choosing this will require you to create another folder for Windows to avoid writing over the existing installation (that it somehow sees now but not when the Repair "Scanning for previous installations of Windows" is run, argh!) I usually call the new folder "WINXP."
3. Install Windows as you would normally, you'll need a Product Key but you can actually use your PERSONAL key on someone else's computer with no danger to you losing it or being accused of piracy, I'll explain this later.
4. Boot the NEW Windows XP install. Do not "Activate" or "register," you're going to be deleting this copy of Windows from the machine if all goes well.
5. Edit the BOOT.INI on the hard drive from the original installation of Windows with the corrupted HAL if you messed it up like I did and had four OS entries in it, none of which worked. This usually happens when you try to use the method outlined in the InformationWeek article repeatedly and it does not work.
6. Go to C:\WINXP\system32\hal.dll (where "WINXP" is the folder you installed the second copy of Windows XP) and copy it from the new Windows to C:\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll (or WHEREVER you installed Windows XP originally, I use "WINDOWS" but some people use strange folder names for their XP) and overwrite any file there. The new hal.dll is uncorrupt and newly regenerated. The file is specific to each machine's hardware configuration and we needed to rebuild it. The installer did that for us with the new installation.
7. Try rebooting your computer to see if you can get into your OLD Windows installation. If you can, congratulations!
8. DELETE the "WINXP" folder (or wherever you put your new Windows install).

I know that my Hard Drive is not damage because it has successfully passed the chkdsk /f /r

But the problem is before I could access the the Recovery Partition before I installed a new Windows repare.

Here is the thing Even though I have the Win XP OS CD I can alternatively have a fresh install but I want the factory install from the Presario_RP, and I was wondering if any of you knew how to boot into that Partition by either adjusting the boot.ini or would I have to create an ISO mirror DVD of the Presario_RP... Or is there another way to access it?

Thanks guys for helping me out By the way if your scratching your head as much as I am... As in if you don't know the answer to this question Let me know!

That even something like that will give me a little lead way to UNDERSTAND the severity of the problem haha

Thanks,
ScmysterIf you have an XP CD you can facilitate a Repair install which will retain all your data...

Ignore billrich for now...Yeah thats what I did... Manage to recover all the data and got AROUND and manage to use the factory recovery partition!... YAY!!!

Thanks guys for the help!

I activated the recovery partition in disk manager.

We're glad that you got it sorted out.

Solve : I can't get past the HP logo screen after booting?

Answer»

I've been having some problems on and off but I have been able to get past that screen by holding down the F8 key. Now, I can't get past that screen no matter what I try to do. I do have recovery disks to try but of course, they are not doing me any good now Anyone have any other suggestions for me? Thanks.
MaryHave you tried tapping F8 repeatedly to enter safemode ? ?
If so what happens ? ?
Yes I have and absolutely nothing happensTapping repeatedly ? ? not holding down ? ?
Do it very early on...yes, yes and yes Why are the disks doing you no good? I am only assuming you tried them? If so what happens? SOUNDS like a failed hard drive but if you could explain a few things it would help. I inserted the disks but nothing happened and since the screen wouldn't move ahead there was nothing more to do. I also tried the esc key and the F10 key but they didn't work either. Ok, a couple of things. First of all, to clarify, when you first turn on the PC, you get the HP logo, do you get the POST screen where it shows hit F1 to setup or shows ram check, etc... white letters on black background? It can't boot if it's not finding a boot device "which is the highest possibility".

First, right when you get the HP screen, either tap esc or tab key, see if that gets you anywhere. If not, which I'm guessing then do this...

Unplug the power to pc, open it up, ground yourself to the pc metal frame and try to work on non static surface, don't need to fry anything inside. Now test to make sure all IDE cables (or other cables) are secure to the drives\devices, remove the CMOS battery for about 15 seconds and put it back in.Try to start the pc. I would also make sure you check to see if all fans are spinning up. It could be a simple loose IDE cable preventing the pc from booting, or could be a bad IDE cable. Could be other issues but let's knock down a few simple ones to be sure.

If you don't now how to do so, I can detail all this for you, just let me know, we don't need to cause further possible damage. OK, I'll try the things that you suggested in the morning. The logo screen is the screen that has the set up and esc prompt. The only thing that I'm not so sure about is the CMOS battery. Where can that be found and what kind of a battery is it?
Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I appreciate it!Quote from: futluce on November 21, 2009, 09:24:58 PM

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I appreciate it!

The CMOS battery is basically a flat larger watch battery which is located on the motherboard. Removing it will reset your bios settings and if there is an issue in your settings, this may help.

Here is a link showing an image which is a lot easier than me posting the whole thing...

CMOS

Also you should check for loose ram sticks while in there as well... PLUS I do suggest you read up on ESD on the top of that page too. Good morning BM! I'm afraid that I have bad news. I did everything that you suggested and I still can't get any further than I was yesterday. I have alot of things going on today so cannot spend any more time on the PC. Thankfully, I have my laptop and that will have to suffice for the time being. My BIGGEST worry is that I will lose everything that is on the desktop. I may have to call a geek to come check it out. But that will have to WAIT until after I get back from the cruise that I am going on next week. Never a dull moment.
As I said previously I am grateful for your help and CONCERN. If you have an aha moment as it concerns my problem please shout out. I have "notify me of replies" so I will know if you reply.
Have a GREAT Sunday and a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Mary I could only suggest trying another IDE cable first. Other than that, it sounds like either the controllers\something gone wrong on the motherboard, or the hard drive has gone bad. It's still possible to try and recover information so whenever you have a geek friend come over to look at it, hopefully he can go over the PC a bit better than I can from here. You are more than welcome and sorry it didn't change anything. You have a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.

Solve : confusing problems (PhysX, Windows Installer)?

Answer»

So I'm trying to do something simple (run a PC game) but can't seem to narrow down exactly what the problem KEEPING me from running it is.

I'm running Windows XP with a Geforce 7900 GTX, specs well above what I NEED. I recently purchased the game Dragon Age Origins, and after installing with no error MESSAGES and trying to run the game I get the message, "This application has failed to start because PhysXLoader.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." After googling this problem I saw that others seemed to have the same problems but none of their solutions helped me (including things like updating my graphics drivers and reinstalling in various ways, etc)

On the game installation disc there is a software folder containing the PhysX installer exe, and on running this by itself I get the error message, "Invalid command line argument. Consult the Windows Installer SDK for detailed command line help." Downloading the latest physx release from the NVidia website gives the same message. This makes me think that maybe when installing the game, the physx installation runs and "fails" in the background but it doesn't say anything? I'm also a little confused because the NVIDIA PhysX site doesn't list my graphics card as supporting PhysX, but it seems like I need PhysX to run the game, even though the game requirements say my graphics card is fine.

So I GOOGLED that error message too. I tried using Microsoft support pages to rename all my MSI files in the command prompt then installing the newest version of Microsoft Installer, and nothing seems to have changed. When I download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and try to run it, I get the error message, "Command line option syntax error. Type Command /? for Help." Again, after googling this message I still can't seem to figure out why exactly I'm getting this message.

It just seems like trying to fix each problem LEADS to another subsequent problem. Am I missing something simple here (hopefully)? Thanks in advance!

Solve : Cleaning keyboard incident: remapping of keys?

Answer»

Ok, so yesterday i installed XP sp3 pro on my macbook 2gb ram intel core2duo cpu t8300 @ 2.4ghz 789mhz
i noticed that it was rather dirty, so, being the responsible owner, i decided to clean it.

i however: DID neglect to turn it off, and believe that i may have inadvertanely remapped some keys to each other:
for example, the h key and alt key now work interchangebly, as in, i can press alt, and get alt, but if i press h, i also get alt. remapping using KeyTweak gives the same.
the shift+/ gives a "?" but also right clicks.

did i harm my macbook physically? i've reinstalled windows 3 times now, and this last time, used ubuntu distro 9 to use gparted to erase and format the drive a couple times. (to get rid of Registry errors if that was the problem)

i have the original XP professional disk, and my key.

*Edit*
i plugged in a usb keyboard and it works fine, all the keys function as they should.
im about to start ubuntu back up and see if it works like it should

*edit*

booted up ubuntu, the h key still repsonds as alt.could someone please respond?Quote from: gksarmy on November 24, 2009, 10:49:34 AM

could someone please respond?

OK, I'll respond. Hi! We don't like bumping on here, especially after only 44 minutes! You do not say what method you used when cleaning your keyboard. Tissues and wipes ETC are NOT recommended. This is a specialised task. Macbook keyboards are well known to be vulnerable to damage and stories of malfunction after cleaning are common, even when switched off, so I fully expect that you have damaged something. You can get a new top case for $50 - $100 on Ebay, but given your record so far, I would take it to a repair shop.

This guy always has a snotty thing to say.
I would not do that. You can take the keyboard apart fairly easy and make sure all the inside parts are still in the right position. Keyboards are simple to take apart and put back together infact it's a good way for being able to wash all the plastic parts by separating them from the electric parts. Sounds like you may have pushed a key out of place when washing it. Oops you said mac book. Well same idea actually you can pull individual keys off and check underneath and make sure the rubber under it is not flattened out or just check to see if its been displaced. The keys snap back on easily. If that does not solve the problem its not too hard to dissaasemble a laptop and check the keybord out but you may have broken the keyboard. If it's under warranty do not take it apart.
sorry salmon trout, i didn't realize i was bumping, really more of a cry for HELP.

@Papyrus: i do have a rudimentary understanding of computers, and a bit of hardware, but my macbook's no longer under warranty. i was looking AROUND, and yeah, it does seem REALLY simple to replace. take out the screws, take out the L bracket, ram, hardrive, then carefully lift off keyboard after prying it open, and then take out little silver-y wire. i'm fairly sure i can do it, and as ST said, the keyboards are only $50. with many being about 30-40.

thanks for your help, though i may just continue to use a usb keyboard for the time being Yep and you may find that you can fix the problem yourself and SAVE 50 bucks but since it's a notebook I kind of think there might be keyboard damage. Who knows you may luck out though by just removing a key from the top they should snap out and snap back in and maybe you just displaced the rubber under it when you were cleaning it. Good Luck hope you solve it without spending too much.

Solve : McciAsyncEventMgr?

Answer»

Whenever I reboot, I get a message asking me to end McciAsynEventMgr. This started a couple weeks ago. What does this mean? Should I delete this program? I don't know what it is or how it got installed. Thanks. I'm not familiar with that program. If you can delete it, do so.Quote from: Allan on November 24, 2009, 12:42:18 PM

Nevermind. I found the Self-help section and will read it. Thanks again.I believe Mcci Async EVENT Mgr (with spaces) is a process associated with the helper program for Verizon broadband.

Solve : Blue screen error (BSOD)?

Answer»

I was getting blue screen error with my windows XP, so I tried to repair it with XP bootable, but whenever it reaches to finalize the installation again the error reproduced. So finally I decided to format and do the fresh installation,
but for that also on finalizing STAGE it is giving same blue screen error and setup is not completing.

the error code is :
STOP Error 0x000000F4: CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION
STOP error 0xF4 means that a process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. STOP code 0x000000F4 may also display "CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION" on the same STOP message.

can anyone please help me out with this.

How to resolve this . Try getting a hold of a different Windows INSTALL CD and try to format again. Here is what MS says about the error. It mentions a hard disk configured as a slave and not as primary, is this a new installation on a new HDD?Quote from: milesman on November 24, 2009, 10:00:34 AM

That's an odd error to get during an install. Are you BOOTING to the XP CD and formatting first? You can try to delete and then recreate the system partition and try again.Actually I have formatted my HDD few days back and created new partions on it. And after that I have installed XP on it.
It worked fine for 2 days and then suddenly this blue error occured and after a day it was very frequent.

Do I have to update my BIOS?

Because after googling I found the blue screen issue is mostly because of drivers or new software or hardware installed. but i have not done anything like that no new installation.
Anyways thanks for your replies, I will implement the said solutions and LET you know further.

Thanks If there IS a bios upgrade then yes, do it.Thank you all the issue is resolved.

The disk was slave, I made it master and it worked. The XP installation is done successfully.

Thank you QUANTOS!Not a problem. Come back any time at all.

Solve : Mouse functionality issue?

Answer»

I originally had a MX1000 mouse for about a year or two and the CONNECTORS OXIDIZED too much to stop it from charging. Today I went to go buy a replacement mouse and purchased a Deathadder made by Razer. When I attempt to connect this mouse, the computer sees it and recognizes it as a Razer however displays a yellow ? next to it due to it not seeing the drivers. I then downloaded the drivers off of the website for my mouse, however using the hardware manager was unable to install them for the mouse. I then attempted to run the .exe file and direct my hardware viewer to there for the drivers, however NONE of the driver files there seemed to work either. Any ideas what to try next? Running windows XP pro SP3 32 bit.1st remove any Logitech software in ADD/Remove...
Then right clik the mouse in Device Manager and select Remove/UNINSTALL.
Re-boot.
You should now be able to install the software. The correct way to install the driver is by running the setup.exe file, not by using hardware detection. If you downloaded the correct driver it probably needs to be unpacked (.zip or similar) and then there should be a setup.exe file. You should also uninstall the Logitech driverI can't seem to find a logitech driver to uninstall :/. i've also just uninstalled the razer drivers again and am sitting here with a powered down PC with to my knowledge no mouse drivers on it, any IDEA how i should proceed here?1) Download the driver for the mouse
2) Run the setup.exe file
